- 0:44Speaker 1: here him, That's why I'm Nick.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Benjamin's time for some bond therapy.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Nick accent is like it reminds me of like FDR
- 0:55Speaker 1: North Atlantic. Yeah, you know, like old elitism, like the
- 0:58Speaker 1: Great Gatsby. That's Nick. Yeah, that's right. Yeah, Niang look
- 1:04Speaker 1: at him and goat speaking am Iowa. The other interpretation
- 1:15Speaker 1: of Jacob's uh impression is Sam the Eagle from the Muppets.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Oh yes, deeper, more like chest boy. It's more like
- 1:23Speaker 1: it's not far for fabulous and much.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you're doing a lot more old nasal with Nick
- 1:34Speaker 2: and a little a little old chesty.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Eagle, which honestly, if you look up Sam the Eagle
- 1:40Speaker 1: and then you look up Nick, Nick is the human
- 1:43Speaker 1: equivalent of Sam's really fucking fat. It's very cool. Look
- 1:49Speaker 1: him up, Sam the Eagle, and then right it's it's
- 1:51Speaker 1: the chicken leg. Yeah, you know, he's got the beak
- 1:53Speaker 1: and he's just got like that brow and the yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 1: that's Nick. Like the forehead that's.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Nick, and yeah, I know, and like it is day is.
- 2:03Speaker 1: My favorite day. It is election day, is the American way.
- 2:11Speaker 1: It is election day as we are recording this, but
- 2:14Speaker 1: future you knows what happened, and innocent us has no idea.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So like you know all of the unrest, you know,
- 2:21Speaker 2: all of the riot, all the things you know, you
- 2:24Speaker 2: don't even know about those things, horrible truth, you know everything,
- 2:29Speaker 2: but excited to do an abbreviated show today. Absent Nick,
- 2:33Speaker 2: who as you are hearing this probably is in Paris,
- 2:37Speaker 2: I believe, And so you know, we wish him well.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I hope he gets home safely, which I think you will.
- 2:42Speaker 2: If you don't eat anything, I think that's the trick.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Don't drink the water, don't swim in the river, don't
- 2:46Speaker 2: eat things. I think Paris is fine, Joe. They don't pasteurize.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Things, right, isn't that a meaningful thing? How many things
- 2:53Speaker 1: do you need pasteurized? I don't know see that. I
- 2:55Speaker 1: don't even know what that is. I think it means
- 2:57Speaker 1: to refrigerate. So that's it's dangerous. Definitely not what that
- 3:02Speaker 1: means drinking right from the Cow's team.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Big.
- 3:04Speaker 2: The big way you can tell the difference between pasteurization
- 3:06Speaker 2: and refrigeration is they are two different words.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Oh okay, yeah, and how they're pronounced. That's right, yeah,
- 3:13Speaker 1: big part of this Wow. Well, as I said earlier,
- 3:17Speaker 1: we want to welcome our first ever therap paramour had
- 3:20Speaker 1: to make up a whole new fucking word. That, guys,
- 3:24Speaker 1: this is the ZJ of the pod Therapy Patreon menu.
- 3:28Speaker 1: If you have to ask, you can't afford it? Great? Yeah? Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: So the dark Lord pretty much went for market fucking price, yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and took this thing to a whole new level that
- 3:38Speaker 1: just stunned us. So thank you, the dark Lord. Dark Lord,
- 3:43Speaker 1: you are awesome and so grateful. Joy referring to you
- 3:46Speaker 1: as the dark Lord. It's great. I like all of
- 3:49Speaker 1: whose name shall not be said, but is the Dark Lord.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So thank you so much. Welcome to the support circle,
- 3:56Speaker 1: and we appreciate you very much.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Mike, the algorithm has sided recently that I need to
- 4:01Speaker 2: watch the Harry Potter movies. You know, for some reason,
- 4:04Speaker 2: I'm just getting clips of Harry Potter movies.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Like it's so weird. Why, yeah, my TikTok did that
- 4:11Speaker 1: with the last Samurai. I'm getting just Tom Cruise movie. Yes, why,
- 4:15Speaker 1: I have no fucking Tom Cruise movie from the nineties.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But you know what, I think that these movies pay
- 4:20Speaker 1: TikTok to like get these cuts in there. Because then
- 4:23Speaker 1: I started looking it up. I'm like, oh, I think
- 4:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna rent it because like I keep seeing clips
- 4:26Speaker 1: and I'm like, you know, when it's been a while
- 4:28Speaker 1: to watch. The other one I'm getting is Lord of
- 4:30Speaker 1: War with Nicholas k and I'm also, again I'm looking
- 4:33Speaker 1: it up. I'm like, well, do I have a subscription
- 4:35Speaker 1: that has this? Yeah, So like, no, I think they
- 4:38Speaker 1: figured it out.
- 4:38Speaker 2: I mean, I hate to break it to whoever is
- 4:40Speaker 2: running it, but I really don't care about watching the
- 4:42Speaker 2: Harry Potter movies.
- 4:43Speaker 1: You say that, now you watch a few dozen more
- 4:46Speaker 1: clips and you're gonna get the itch. I don't watch them.
- 4:48Speaker 1: That's you ever watch them?
- 4:50Speaker 3: I mean, sorry, have you ever watched Harry Potter movies?
- 4:52Speaker 2: I don't think I've seen all of them. Okay, I've
- 4:55Speaker 2: seen a few of them. Okay, you do need to
- 4:57Speaker 2: that is worth it? Well, I mean I'll see it
- 5:02Speaker 2: at some point.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I imagine probably it's easier if you're like a Disney household.
- 5:07Speaker 1: It's not Disney, but like, if that's part of your appetite,
- 5:10Speaker 1: we do like our Disney.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I know you for Disney.
- 5:14Speaker 1: We're going to put that to the test today because
- 5:16Speaker 1: the trivia that I have designed is Whitney specific questions
- 5:21Speaker 1: that advantage Whitney versus Jacob specific questions that advantage Jacob.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And each round, I'm going to do three and mix
- 5:28Speaker 1: them up so that you each get We're only going
- 5:31Speaker 1: to get the other person's question. We're going to see,
- 5:34Speaker 1: we're going to see, but Whitney specific questions.
- 5:37Speaker 2: On any of my shows, Jacob specific questions, I usually
- 5:40Speaker 2: missed those questions.
- 5:41Speaker 1: We're going to see. We're going to see Whitneys are
- 5:43Speaker 1: heavily Disney centric and Jacob's are heavily Whiskey centric. I
- 5:47Speaker 1: do know a lot about Disney. I probably know more
- 5:49Speaker 1: about Disney than I know about whiskey. We're going to
- 5:51Speaker 1: find out.
- 5:51Speaker 3: I have.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Way underestimated you on this because so it is. You
- 5:56Speaker 1: may have and you may have over I don't want
- 5:57Speaker 1: to say the topic is, but it is Disney focused
- 6:00Speaker 1: and uh stuff about whiskey. We'll see, we'll see. But
- 6:04Speaker 1: we've got some great questions to kick off today's show.
- 6:06Speaker 1: The first one, speaking of whiskey, is about socially acceptable addictions. Hi, y'all,
- 6:13Speaker 1: I love Yeah. I yelled caffeine last year.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Yes, deep, yeah, I was just finishing a good glass
- 6:20Speaker 2: of tea in my car.
- 6:21Speaker 1: You know, speaking of caffeine and socially acceptable addictions. We
- 6:24Speaker 1: live in Nevada, listeners, and in the West, we have
- 6:27Speaker 1: a lot of people that are Latter Day Saints Mormons,
- 6:29Speaker 1: that's true, Jesus. They drink a lot of Monsters coffee.
- 6:35Speaker 2: But for some reason that's into caffeine. But like the
- 6:38Speaker 2: monster thing is fairly new. I think it is because
- 6:41Speaker 2: they have used to be able to drink the energy drinks.
- 6:43Speaker 1: To me, it's like the Rama Spring, a thing that
- 6:45Speaker 1: happens with the Amish kids where they have no resilience
- 6:49Speaker 1: and then they're all of a sudden told like you
- 6:50Speaker 1: can do cocaine, and then they all fall off the
- 6:52Speaker 1: fucking boat.
- 6:53Speaker 2: But it's also like because Mormonism, I don't know what
- 6:57Speaker 2: they're because they don't like Mormon. They don't like that anymore. Yeah,
- 7:01Speaker 2: but it's Latter Days Latter Day Saints. So do I
- 7:03Speaker 2: just call them the Latter Day Saints?
- 7:04Speaker 1: I think?
- 7:05Speaker 2: So it's like the Mormon it's like the who Okay,
- 7:07Speaker 2: I think you just do it like that.
- 7:09Speaker 1: So whatever. So those people like they're they're a young religion.
- 7:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and they still have like they don't still but
- 7:16Speaker 2: they have a prophet and stuff like on they can
- 7:19Speaker 2: change the rules, that's it.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Yeah. So like fairly recently they they.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Said that black people aren't like biblically inferior.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, which you know, I want to come out. I'm
- 7:28Speaker 1: for I'm for that, I'm for the change. I consider
- 7:33Speaker 1: myself on the progressive side of Mormonism. Okay, so they are, Yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'm for the new profiting.
- 7:41Speaker 2: They like black people more now and for some reason,
- 7:44Speaker 2: like some caffeine is okay.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, and I think it's like I think it's
- 7:48Speaker 1: coffee's bad but soda or like monsters you can get
- 7:52Speaker 1: away with. I don't get it. I don't know what
- 7:54Speaker 1: the rules are, but every Mormon I know is just
- 7:57Speaker 1: sucking down monsters like they are founding that ship. Which
- 8:02Speaker 1: I'm impressed that you're getting a red Bull. That's a
- 8:04Speaker 1: big red bull too, Like I can only do that.
- 8:08Speaker 1: I can only do the tiny one. Yeah, that's the one.
- 8:10Speaker 3: I usually drink, like half.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Hoies. You won't do any energy drinks. I just hate them.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Are you a coffee guy? Though?
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'll drink coffee and tea. I mean, I'll drink an
- 8:21Speaker 2: energy drink if that's what's required. If I just have to,
- 8:24Speaker 2: I have to do a bump to get through the night.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I bet, I bet I drink less than one energy
- 8:28Speaker 2: drink a year.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I'm with you on that. Well, no, I'm not, because
- 8:31Speaker 1: I will drink red bulls, but only when we record.
- 8:33Speaker 1: It's only I was going to say.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I was like, I probably drink one once a year
- 8:37Speaker 3: until I started.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Well, you need to grow up and do lines in
- 8:40Speaker 1: the bathroom like an adult.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I didn't know y'all were doing that before.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Keeps it's an excuse to do lines in the bathroom
- 8:47Speaker 1: We've even published an episodes for three It's just an excuse,
- 8:52Speaker 1: all right, lines in.
- 8:54Speaker 2: The bathroomially acceptable addictions.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Hi 'all.
- 8:57Speaker 1: I love listening to your show every week. Y'all are
- 9:01Speaker 1: a vast resid for this one. Yeah, a vast reservoir
- 9:04Speaker 1: of knowledge and frequently surprise me with your level headed,
- 9:08Speaker 1: useful advice, even on the most difficult of questions. Anyway,
- 9:11Speaker 1: here's mine.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I don't usually have this have the script today because
- 9:14Speaker 2: Nick isn't here, so I don't usually see that.
- 9:16Speaker 1: People also spell the words how I see.
- 9:19Speaker 3: You didn't the script because.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Our listeners are just assholes, not at all wonderful people.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Now really. For the past two years or so, I've
- 9:28Speaker 1: been struggling with an unidentifiable sleep disorder. Sleep has never
- 9:32Speaker 1: been the slightest problem for me, but now I can't
- 9:35Speaker 1: get through a single night without multiple wakings. I've tried
- 9:39Speaker 1: many on and off label medications, the classic recommendations such
- 9:43Speaker 1: as changing pillows or controlling the temperature of the room,
- 9:47Speaker 1: and CBT for insomnia also called CBTI. Part of this
- 9:51Speaker 1: problem has been discovered to be sleep apnea, which I'm
- 9:54Speaker 1: now successfully treating with a sea paths good but there
- 9:57Speaker 1: is still a large unknown factor. I suspect it to
- 10:01Speaker 1: be a case of long COVID, as I developed all
- 10:04Speaker 1: this immediately after recovering from a case of COVID that
- 10:06Speaker 1: was otherwise mild. I find that on many days the
- 10:09Speaker 1: only way I'm able to reasonably function is with the
- 10:12Speaker 1: help of caffeine. I only use it in the morning
- 10:15Speaker 1: so as not to interfere with my sleep, and I'm
- 10:18Speaker 1: carefully looking out for correlations between my caffeine intake and
- 10:21Speaker 1: sleep quality. But nonetheless, it feels like an addiction. It's
- 10:25Speaker 1: a struggle to go without it. My tolerance gets higher
- 10:28Speaker 1: the more I use it. I get very intense cravings,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and sometimes I've an experienced withdraws. It's occurred to me
- 10:35Speaker 1: that this is one of the few socially acceptable addictions
- 10:38Speaker 1: in our society. So what are your thoughts on caffeine addiction,
- 10:42Speaker 1: especially coming from a substance use background. Oh good, Nick's
- 10:45Speaker 1: not here? Is it ignored? Don't worry, I'll pitch it often,
- 10:50Speaker 1: trust me. Substance use background you're talking about, Jacob Smith,
- 10:54Speaker 1: It is an ignored ground, the foreground and future and present.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Did bumps in the bathroom on the way here? How
- 11:00Speaker 1: does medication with caffeine differ from that of alcohol or marijuana?
- 11:05Speaker 1: What are some things that I can do to ensure
- 11:07Speaker 1: it remains in the functional rather than disfunctional realm? For context,
- 11:12Speaker 1: I'm a twenty seven year old male. My pronouns are
- 11:14Speaker 1: he and him, thank you? Who coffee addiction.
- 11:20Speaker 2: If you think caffeine addiction is just fine in society,
- 11:23Speaker 2: which it is, I've got really bad news for you
- 11:26Speaker 2: about sugar. Yeah, especially in the US, Like we put
- 11:30Speaker 2: sugar in everything. You eat so much sugar on a
- 11:34Speaker 2: daily basis in the US without noss.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Oh, that's so true.
- 11:38Speaker 2: And if you if you think getting off caffeine is bad,
- 11:41Speaker 2: getting off sugar is tex.
- 11:42Speaker 3: It's so hard, like it's brutal.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Like we are all.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I think it's safe to say that virtually everyone in
- 11:49Speaker 2: the US is addicted to some degree addicted to sugar.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's literally the reason we have dentistry, Like cavities exist,
- 11:57Speaker 1: because that's right.
- 11:58Speaker 2: A couple of years ago, when ants wouldn't let Subway
- 12:01Speaker 2: call their bread bread sugar, they made them cake.
- 12:05Speaker 1: It was pastries and the US was like wait, what what.
- 12:11Speaker 2: How much is at and the bread it was like yes,
- 12:16Speaker 2: you idiots literally.
- 12:17Speaker 3: Cake like Hawaiian rolls exactly.
- 12:21Speaker 1: We're tonight for election night. We're doing a barbe pulled
- 12:24Speaker 1: barbecue pork sliders, okay on the little Hawaiian rolls with
- 12:27Speaker 1: some coal slaw on top.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Very nice.
- 12:29Speaker 1: I'm not a fan of the Hawaiian rolls, don't They
- 12:32Speaker 1: are too sweet. But it's hard to find other roles.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Little pre cut roll you gotta have.
- 12:36Speaker 2: You have to write something on there, think, yeah, like
- 12:39Speaker 2: you can do you can do the sliders, but then
- 12:42Speaker 2: you have to be careful with the spices and everything.
- 12:44Speaker 3: In the barbecue sauce.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Yeah already. Yeah, you gotta get like a vinegar based
- 12:49Speaker 1: barbecue sauce. That's another thing that's just loaded with sugar
- 12:51Speaker 1: that I didn't know about. All the sauces, barbecue sauce,
- 12:55Speaker 1: ketchup and sauce.
- 12:58Speaker 2: You can fucking like prey Go or whatever brand of
- 13:00Speaker 2: pasta sauce. I know, I'm pulling a brand from the
- 13:02Speaker 2: nineties right now from yeah, but yeah, like whatever whatever
- 13:06Speaker 2: brand of pasta sauce like that's got sugar in it.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Yeah. No, anyway, writer, thanks for writing in good luck.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I make some.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Sweet tea all the time with just a block of sugar.
- 13:19Speaker 1: It is.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I I have looked at the amount of sugar that
- 13:22Speaker 2: I put in, and I put a lot of sugar
- 13:24Speaker 2: into a big, your gallon pitcher of sweet tea that
- 13:26Speaker 2: I've been keeping the fridge, and I have looked at
- 13:29Speaker 2: the amount of sugar that's in, like the the bottles
- 13:32Speaker 2: of sweet tea that you can buy in the gas.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Stations and stuff peak, and it's I'm putting like a third.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Like it's not it's less than half.
- 13:40Speaker 2: I'm putting like a third of the sugar, and I
- 13:43Speaker 2: still think it's pretty sweet.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I saw this TikTok where they were showing with little
- 13:47Speaker 1: cubes what the average American eats in sugar every day.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Oh it's it's bad. I was shocked, Like it was
- 13:54Speaker 1: a mountain of sugar, and I'm like, how in the
- 13:57Speaker 1: fuck is.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Like this is one of those things that I don't
- 13:59Speaker 2: know for sure, but I feel like it must be
- 14:01Speaker 2: true somewhere. Is that, Like there must be some bottled
- 14:03Speaker 2: water somewhere that just has sugar in it that makes sense,
- 14:05Speaker 2: like eight rade, yes, oh yeah, got sugar for sure.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Every coke product. I think you're not far off coffee
- 14:13Speaker 1: so okay. Every morning, I am three to five cups
- 14:18Speaker 1: of coffee. There's a lot of coffee, is it though? Okay,
- 14:22Speaker 1: but they're not the big honkin mugs. I like a
- 14:25Speaker 1: nice regular coffee. I like the small mug. You know
- 14:27Speaker 1: a lot of people get them big ol'd like twelve
- 14:29Speaker 1: ounce ones. I'm about the eight because I don't want
- 14:31Speaker 1: it to get cold, because I'm not like gulping it.
- 14:34Speaker 1: But there's not like normal coffee mug size. Yeah, and
- 14:37Speaker 1: I'm drinking coffee from about five am like this to yes.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Oh the pod therapyffee.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Pot therapy coffee mug my therapist knows about you is
- 14:46Speaker 2: what my shop dot com.
- 14:48Speaker 1: It's in a while since we promoted the merch. Yeah,
- 14:51Speaker 1: I'm drinking coffee from five am to about noon and
- 14:54Speaker 1: then if I'm at UNLV, well, no, that's not true.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I'm drinking coffee NonStop from five afternoon. After that a
- 15:01Speaker 1: couple hours in about two three o'clock, if I have
- 15:04Speaker 1: some free time, I'm going to Starbucks and getting one
- 15:06Speaker 1: more iced coffee.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And how much of that is habit and how much
- 15:10Speaker 2: of that is need for caffee? See, I don't know,
- 15:13Speaker 2: because I never tried to stop. So now I don't
- 15:17Speaker 2: have to find out. Am I addicted to heroin?
- 15:19Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm just going to keep using heroin
- 15:21Speaker 1: and it will never have to find out. Fine, Yeah,
- 15:24Speaker 1: don't worry about you're reading into it. You're in denial.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Shut up.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Are you a daily coffee drinker, Jacob?
- 15:29Speaker 2: No, but I'm I'm almost everyday tea Okay, I drink
- 15:34Speaker 2: a good bit of tea.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Is this far off from coffee? Is the caffeine wise?
- 15:37Speaker 1: It's pretty similar? Yeah? I think. So what's your tea?
- 15:40Speaker 3: You know what kind of tear drink? Green tea? Your
- 15:42Speaker 3: breakfast tea?
- 15:43Speaker 1: Oh, earl gray?
- 15:45Speaker 2: It depends if it depends on if I want it
- 15:46Speaker 2: hot or cold, Like I have a nice English breakfast
- 15:49Speaker 2: blend or a nice Earl.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Gray that I'll do if I want a hot tea.
- 15:53Speaker 1: What are they?
- 15:54Speaker 3: That's what I was going to ask. Coffee O me?
- 15:58Speaker 1: Oh? Cream?
- 15:58Speaker 2: Oh in the in the tea? I either do it
- 16:02Speaker 2: straight or I'll do a little bit of honey. Okay,
- 16:06Speaker 2: just honey, just a touch of honey.
- 16:08Speaker 1: You're not any milk in your see, I got likes
- 16:12Speaker 1: the milk big and I put too much half in
- 16:14Speaker 1: and my wife gets pissed because, like, I like my
- 16:17Speaker 1: coffee light. Yeah. I take my coffee like my women
- 16:20Speaker 1: without another man in it. Yeah, exactly, yeah, ground up
- 16:24Speaker 1: and in the freezer.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Yeah, but no like light sweet, I do the liquid Stevia.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Oh, so I'll do a squirre to that, and then
- 16:31Speaker 1: I'm putting in probably fifteen percent of the mug is
- 16:37Speaker 1: probably going to be half and half. Okay, so it's
- 16:39Speaker 1: it's the bottom layer there, and then I'm bowing New Orleans.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I did have a nice Cafe ol A, which is
- 16:44Speaker 1: a lot of cream. Oh, it's a creamy coffee. It's
- 16:47Speaker 1: like half and half. I'm gonna start telling people that's
- 16:49Speaker 1: what I drink. I'm gonna just tell them I have
- 16:51Speaker 1: Cafe ol A, and I'm gonna let them. Yeah, chickory
- 16:56Speaker 1: chickeny used no tears. Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 3: How I like my coffee.
- 17:03Speaker 2: You get the and then filled that about halfway up
- 17:06Speaker 2: with cream.
- 17:07Speaker 1: And it's real fucking good. I like, how do you
- 17:09Speaker 1: take your coffee or what are you in the mornings?
- 17:11Speaker 1: Are you coffee tea?
- 17:12Speaker 3: One cup of coffee? Out of habit? Jacob is spot
- 17:15Speaker 3: on for me because I literally do not feel a
- 17:18Speaker 3: difference between you wake up seven seven thirty and.
- 17:22Speaker 1: You're hitting one cup of coffee, one cup and just
- 17:24Speaker 1: for the flavor.
- 17:25Speaker 2: And by the way, I noticed that YouTube guys both
- 17:27Speaker 2: went to bed really late last night. You were texting
- 17:29Speaker 2: me at seven am. Yeah, presumably had not gone to
- 17:32Speaker 2: bed yet. That's not how most people operated.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I'll wait for Jacob later. I was like, I'm not
- 17:38Speaker 3: going to check that out Las Vegas performer math.
- 17:40Speaker 2: You noticed I was spotted at nine though today today
- 17:48Speaker 2: I was leaving home. I hadn't been back home yet.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I've been out in about.
- 17:54Speaker 3: No, I'm a one cup like I don't know. Yeah,
- 17:57Speaker 3: I don't need it. It's just Habit feels good and
- 17:59Speaker 3: cozy the morning, Like I just like having a vibe. Yeah,
- 18:03Speaker 3: like the smell of the Yes, he will have like
- 18:06Speaker 3: two espressos and they will have like maybe a third
- 18:09Speaker 3: one later.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Like he We do have an espresso machine at the show.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Occasionally have an espresso at the show now nice. We
- 18:16Speaker 2: also have a coffee like a coffee stand the show.
- 18:19Speaker 2: We sell coffee. Yeah, I'll get a coffee there every
- 18:22Speaker 2: so often.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Yeah, get that little pick me up. See, if I'm
- 18:25Speaker 1: not drinking water, I'm drinking coffee. But I don't like
- 18:29Speaker 1: any other beverages. Okay, I don't like anything.
- 18:32Speaker 3: The cream is in all of those coffees half and half, and.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I'm just ron Burgundy the two lead, just sipping right
- 18:42Speaker 1: from the fucking garten.
- 18:43Speaker 2: So I've got a couple of thoughts on anonymous here
- 18:45Speaker 2: hit it and uh.
- 18:47Speaker 1: So, one is it sounds like we've got two different things.
- 18:49Speaker 2: We got a sleeping issue and that we have the
- 18:52Speaker 2: caffeine thing and the sleeping issue. I feel like that
- 18:56Speaker 2: needs to get fixed faster. Yeah, and like, go to
- 19:00Speaker 2: the doctor, Go see your go see your general practice.
- 19:03Speaker 1: They're doing so many right things, you know. I like
- 19:05Speaker 1: that the medicines. I like the sleep apnea.
- 19:07Speaker 2: And they're just but they're just trying different over the
- 19:10Speaker 2: counter things right now, I think they are.
- 19:11Speaker 1: Yeah, so they time to kick that up and not
- 19:13Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Go to the doctor and and see about getting like
- 19:17Speaker 2: a real sleep aid a lot of them now or
- 19:20Speaker 2: not have it forming that's you don't You don't have
- 19:22Speaker 2: to be concerned about that. Yeah, So yeah, go and
- 19:26Speaker 2: and uh maybe get a sleep study done, which I
- 19:29Speaker 2: think they would have had to do for the apnea,
- 19:31Speaker 2: U get sea get maybe sleep study maybe. Yeah, So
- 19:35Speaker 2: if you haven't done a sleep study, maybe maybe see
- 19:37Speaker 2: if you can get a sleep study done. I like that,
- 19:39Speaker 2: And they're a pain in the ass to do. But
- 19:42Speaker 2: then after you've done them, you've done them okay, and
- 19:44Speaker 2: it's and it's over and done with.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I think it's weird that we still have to do
- 19:47Speaker 1: that because we have like Apple watches that are like
- 19:49Speaker 1: monitoring everything.
- 19:50Speaker 2: About I'm sure that there's I know there are take
- 19:53Speaker 2: home sleep studies as well, where you can just like
- 19:55Speaker 2: hook the sensors up to yourself and go to bed.
- 19:57Speaker 1: I assume because you bring the doctor home with you,
- 20:00Speaker 1: I mean always out there just watching with an arm
- 20:03Speaker 1: on their their head, just watching you all night, studying you.
- 20:07Speaker 3: Sometimes just volunteers.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Do you need a sleep watcher?
- 20:11Speaker 3: Yeah, you know I can do it.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I'm up late.
- 20:13Speaker 3: I listened to podcasts up till seven am times.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Yeah. That's also a good way to help you fall asleep, writer,
- 20:18Speaker 1: is just go watch other people sleep. Yeah, I think
- 20:20Speaker 1: definitely try that.
- 20:21Speaker 2: I've had sleep issues in the past, and and there
- 20:24Speaker 2: are a couple of different things that I've taken over
- 20:27Speaker 2: the years, and everything harder meds and uh.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Some harder meds.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Some. I have one right now that's uh marijuana based
- 20:34Speaker 2: pill without the THHC in it.
- 20:37Speaker 1: And I'm not being cag but I don't remember when CBD.
- 20:40Speaker 1: It's some version of it.
- 20:41Speaker 2: Something in that neighborhood, and that seems to worry. It's
- 20:44Speaker 2: just straight him. Yeah, I just chew on it a
- 20:47Speaker 2: piece of rope.
- 20:48Speaker 3: Wow, lets me right out, little earthy.
- 20:52Speaker 2: But for me, it's I just have to get back
- 20:54Speaker 2: into the rhythm of it, so like I'll need something
- 20:57Speaker 2: every now and then to kind of kickstart my my
- 21:00Speaker 2: rhythm back into it. Yeah, and then I'm and then
- 21:02Speaker 2: I'm kind of okay again for a while.
- 21:03Speaker 1: I agree with you because if this is a long
- 21:05Speaker 1: COVID thing, which I've heard some similar symptoms from folks,
- 21:10Speaker 1: You're probably right that you're gonna have to see a
- 21:12Speaker 1: psychiatrist at some point, and they might have to start
- 21:14Speaker 1: reaching for things like trasodone or.
- 21:18Speaker 3: It's like non addictive trasidone.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody's taking trasidone for fun. Nobody's taking hydroxyzine for fun,
- 21:24Speaker 1: or if they get up there to like an anti psychotic.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I could see that too. Because a lot of times
- 21:28Speaker 1: those are off labeled or ambient. Ambient can be abbitforming.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Yeah don't it's on the list. I mean, you know
- 21:34Speaker 1: your psychiatrists might want to do that. I really appreciate
- 21:37Speaker 1: the writer talking about cbt I. It doesn't come at
- 21:42Speaker 1: a lot. So this is an area I've been learning
- 21:44Speaker 1: a lot about because it turns out the UNLV clinic
- 21:47Speaker 1: has a lot of specialists in it, and so that's
- 21:49Speaker 1: been really neat and a lot of the students get
- 21:50Speaker 1: advanced training in it, and they do like a whole
- 21:52Speaker 1: protocol for it. And so then I started, you know,
- 21:55Speaker 1: taking the extra work and like trying to learn about
- 21:57Speaker 1: it and reading the manuals very impressive of what.
- 22:00Speaker 2: CBTI can do. And it really has to do with
- 22:03Speaker 2: breaking down the habit. You'd think it has a lot
- 22:06Speaker 2: to do with like perspective, and it does, but a
- 22:09Speaker 2: lot of its behavioral activation and like helping your body
- 22:13Speaker 2: get into the right ritual state, a lot of self analysis.
- 22:17Speaker 1: But it's again it's a very evidence based practice. So
- 22:20Speaker 1: the writer bringing up like, hey, I've even tried this
- 22:22Speaker 1: the psychological way not hitting any ground. I think the
- 22:26Speaker 1: best suggestion on sleep is probably Jacob's but what do
- 22:29Speaker 1: we think about this idea of caffeine maybe dependence.
- 22:34Speaker 3: I know, and they're experiencing withdraws, well.
- 22:35Speaker 1: They're I mean, you're ticking all the boxes and we
- 22:37Speaker 1: don't talk about it enough. But in the DSM five
- 22:41Speaker 1: that is a thing. Yeah, yeah, caffeine dependence is a
- 22:44Speaker 1: disorder that it can exist. Caffeine withdrawal is a disorder.
- 22:48Speaker 1: And if you look it up you'll see that the
- 22:50Speaker 1: actual criteria are pretty pronounced, like people notice the difference.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Oh yeah, what.
- 22:55Speaker 3: Are your thoughts coming from that? Like addiction background? I
- 22:57Speaker 3: mean yeah, like because in theory it's like a problem
- 23:02Speaker 3: if it's disrupting your life or whatnot. So maybe if
- 23:05Speaker 3: the withdrawal symptoms are disrupting your life, and honymobs.
- 23:08Speaker 1: Well, and the writer brings up the right word functional, right,
- 23:11Speaker 1: and so like we joke about functional alcoholism and that's
- 23:13Speaker 1: probably not the gold star you're aiming for. But functional
- 23:17Speaker 1: caffeine dependence is American, you know, this is the American way.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Honestly, even being in Italy, I thought this was really interesting.
- 23:27Speaker 3: The espresso, which I believe has less caffeine than a
- 23:31Speaker 3: regular brewed cup of coffee, which is kind of a misnomer.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I feel like, yeheah, I would think it's the shot.
- 23:37Speaker 3: But very often we jump into like a little cafe
- 23:40Speaker 3: to I wouldn't get an espresso, but like Peter Wood
- 23:43Speaker 3: and you would see workers in their little like reflective vests.
- 23:46Speaker 3: They just go up and get their little shot of
- 23:48Speaker 3: espresso and then they leave and it's like all throughout
- 23:50Speaker 3: the day. So I mean, yeah, we kind of joke
- 23:52Speaker 3: that that's very American, the like cups of coffee are
- 23:55Speaker 3: like a big mug of coffee, but really those little
- 23:57Speaker 3: espresso's just two three pm all throughout the afternoon.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Yeah, like the European thing they hate pour over coffee, right,
- 24:03Speaker 1: but their thing is like it's a French press or
- 24:05Speaker 1: it's an expresso. They don't do pour over coffee.
- 24:08Speaker 3: And yeah, like just regular cups of coffee, like brewed
- 24:11Speaker 3: cups that you don't see that. Yeah, you might get
- 24:13Speaker 3: an Americana, which is just an espresso with water.
- 24:15Speaker 1: To oh okay, see, I don't know.
- 24:18Speaker 2: I'm really curious about the amount of caffeine in a
- 24:20Speaker 2: shot of espresso because they feel like it is higher,
- 24:22Speaker 2: but then it's so concentrated.
- 24:24Speaker 1: I don't know. But I mean, writer, you're you're knocking
- 24:27Speaker 1: on the right door. So, like one, I want to
- 24:28Speaker 1: speak to the science of this. Yes, caffeine dependence is
- 24:31Speaker 1: a thing. Yes, you're The title of your letter is
- 24:34Speaker 1: a great way to frame this that functionally we have
- 24:38Speaker 1: substances that American society just accepts that we run on
- 24:45Speaker 1: sugar was a bigger Oh yeah, if you just tried
- 24:47Speaker 1: to cut sugar out of your life, you would probably
- 24:50Speaker 1: go through withdraws. You know, you would have such craving,
- 24:53Speaker 1: such hunger pain, even though you're full, you're sated, but
- 24:56Speaker 1: like your body looks for the sugar and it's a big,
- 24:59Speaker 1: big part. And so like, caffeine is absolutely one of
- 25:01Speaker 1: those things that's like, functionally okay, we joke about it,
- 25:04Speaker 1: we've normalized it, and there's a lot of strong arguments
- 25:07Speaker 1: out there that caffeine is not great for your health.
- 25:10Speaker 1: But to me, the big thing that I'm looking to
- 25:12Speaker 1: is this dysfunction and what I'm seeing in this letter
- 25:15Speaker 1: though I'm seeing the writers say, look, I'm being careful
- 25:17Speaker 1: not to be hitting at caffeine later and later, I'm
- 25:20Speaker 1: trying not to allow that to tip the scales with
- 25:22Speaker 1: my sleep disorder. So I'm just finding that I am
- 25:25Speaker 1: dependent on it, but i am finding that my tolerance
- 25:28Speaker 1: is increasing, I'm experiencing cravings, and that when I'm not
- 25:32Speaker 1: getting enough of it, I'm experiencing withdrawal. And there are
- 25:36Speaker 1: withdraw symptoms to caffeine. And obviously tiredness is one that
- 25:39Speaker 1: most people think of, but irritability is one, Restlessness is one. Headaches.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Headaches can be a big one. Some people get the shakes,
- 25:46Speaker 2: the shakes. I've had some people getting they see spots.
- 25:50Speaker 2: It's not hallucination.
- 25:51Speaker 1: It just has to do with like their retinas, but
- 25:53Speaker 1: like they're seeing blue and like all sorts of stuff.
- 25:56Speaker 1: So I mean, there can disorientation, dizziness. So this absolutely
- 25:59Speaker 1: can be a thing. And I think if you're looking
- 26:01Speaker 1: at that, the classic advice on this is gonna be weaning,
- 26:05Speaker 1: you know, because I mean, we're gonna want you to
- 26:07Speaker 1: start weaning down because your body will adapt, like if
- 26:11Speaker 1: you become dependent on the caffeine. What's fundamentally happening, And
- 26:15Speaker 1: not to get too into the science of like how
- 26:17Speaker 1: ADP works and shit, but essentially what caffeine is doing
- 26:20Speaker 1: is it's binding with certain phosphate receptors that are essentially
- 26:23Speaker 1: blocking the biochemicals that signal tiredness. So those chemicals ultimately
- 26:28Speaker 1: build up in your system anyway, they don't dissolve. Caffeine
- 26:31Speaker 1: doesn't make them go away, And contrary to popular belief,
- 26:34Speaker 1: caffeine doesn't technically lift you as much as it's blocking
- 26:38Speaker 1: the receptor for tiredness. So then eventually the half life
- 26:41Speaker 1: of the caffeine is exceeded, it wears away, it no
- 26:44Speaker 1: longer blocks the receptor, and then you do get those
- 26:47Speaker 1: tired biochemical signals that attach to your brain. And now
- 26:50Speaker 1: that's the crash, right, that's when you suddenly feel it
- 26:52Speaker 1: all at once. So in theory, if you're weaning yourself away,
- 26:56Speaker 1: what you're doing is you're allowing more of those receptors
- 26:58Speaker 1: to touch those biochemicals that naturally form. And then slowly
- 27:02Speaker 1: over time, you're going to be decreasing that sense of
- 27:05Speaker 1: withdrawal and you're going to learn to tolerate those those
- 27:07Speaker 1: receptors more, which I mean that more natural state is
- 27:11Speaker 1: good for you in the end. And I've gone through
- 27:12Speaker 1: times where I've just detoxed off of coffee completely.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yeah, if you have like days maybe on the weekend,
- 27:17Speaker 3: or you have you know, I don't know. You're on vacation.
- 27:20Speaker 3: You take some time off, Yeah, that time to try
- 27:23Speaker 3: and reduce.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Absolutely or even switching to like decaf for a while,
- 27:27Speaker 1: because the habit is a big party. Like for me,
- 27:31Speaker 1: I need that hot cup like it has to happen.
- 27:34Speaker 1: If I don't have that, it's weird. It is the vibe.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Are you okay?
- 27:39Speaker 2: If you have a cup of coffee and Peter pours
- 27:41Speaker 2: himself a cup of tea?
- 27:43Speaker 1: Is that okay? Or does that bother you?
- 27:45Speaker 3: Why would it bother me?
- 27:46Speaker 1: Bothers me? Why Peter drinks tea? Yeah, I'm not okay
- 27:50Speaker 1: with it.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Tell Peter I will let him is a big tea
- 27:53Speaker 3: drinker that he's kind of buff.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Let's just let's just get along. I think Peter and
- 27:58Speaker 1: I need to have a great policy of like, hey,
- 27:59Speaker 1: we could be friendly. I'm not here to annoy you,
- 28:02Speaker 1: but he loves.
- 28:02Speaker 3: That when he makes tea, You'll be like, make me
- 28:04Speaker 3: a cup, but I have to put my own amount
- 28:07Speaker 3: of honey in it because he will put so much.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I'm like, that's just sugar water.
- 28:10Speaker 1: I go. Do you put splash of milk in your tea?
- 28:13Speaker 3: If it's breakfast? Tea I will. I love that. That's
- 28:16Speaker 3: a whole vibe too. It just takes me back to
- 28:18Speaker 3: traveling and like, you know, the first time I experienced that.
- 28:21Speaker 2: But other teas no, otherwise, I'm not doing any of these. No,
- 28:25Speaker 2: it's got now.
- 28:26Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 28:26Speaker 1: Nobody's mad at you.
- 28:27Speaker 2: The cream, jod Joys the cream.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Look, I just want it to be known. I'm strongly
- 28:34Speaker 1: coming out on team Dairy.
- 28:35Speaker 3: Fine day. Doesn't dairy messes with my stomach.
- 28:38Speaker 1: A bit, so I don't really really doesn't.
- 28:40Speaker 3: It tastes delicious, it does like Jacob's coffee a or whatever.
- 28:45Speaker 3: I know dairy doesn't want you to do.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Anyway, writer, this is a very relatable thing. Yes, is
- 28:53Speaker 1: a thing. I really like the idea of decreasing it though,
- 28:57Speaker 1: especially if we're going to be talking to a psychi
- 29:00Speaker 1: trist and we're going to start getting meds in there.
- 29:02Speaker 1: The fewer biochemicals that can mess with this. So one
- 29:05Speaker 1: of the things if Nick were here, here's one of
- 29:06Speaker 1: the things Nick Wick impersonation, Yeah right, it's always a
- 29:12Speaker 1: fucking treatment plan with Nick, work out, go to the gym,
- 29:14Speaker 1: one of the yeah right, pushups, bitch. So like one
- 29:17Speaker 1: of the things that Nick and made a Nazi. That's
- 29:20Speaker 1: always the answer. When Nick and I ran a half
- 29:22Speaker 1: way house that had everybody there had severe mental illness,
- 29:25Speaker 1: they were all medicated, and a lot of them were
- 29:28Speaker 1: on various kinds of sleep aids as well, because little
- 29:32Speaker 1: known fact, whenever you blow out a bunch of your
- 29:34Speaker 1: dopamine receptors with different kinds of drugs, sleep is usually
- 29:37Speaker 1: a problem. So one of the things that we would
- 29:40Speaker 1: often struggle with though, is our patients would just load
- 29:43Speaker 1: up on monster energy drinks and they were just constantly
- 29:46Speaker 1: hitting this stuff and the touring and the guacasine and
- 29:49Speaker 1: all that other bullshit that's in there. It would fuck
- 29:52Speaker 1: up their psych meds a lot of the time. So
- 29:55Speaker 1: writers talking about kind of standard issue coffee. But what
- 29:58Speaker 1: a lot of people don't realize is that, uh, heavy
- 30:00Speaker 1: doses of caffeine can fuck up your psych meds. And
- 30:03Speaker 1: so when you do talk to that psychiatrist at Jacob's
- 30:05Speaker 1: recommendation to kind of talk about some items on the
- 30:08Speaker 1: top shelf that will help you are going to want
- 30:10Speaker 1: to get this caffeine work way down.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope that helps, and uh yeah, get the
- 30:16Speaker 2: get the sleep studies do all that kind of stuff
- 30:18Speaker 2: with the doctors. Uh and yeah, work back on the caffeine,
- 30:21Speaker 2: and I think those two things will help.
- 30:23Speaker 1: Each other out. That's gonna be that's gonna be great
- 30:25Speaker 1: for you. I believe it. Yeah, you can you can
- 30:28Speaker 1: do this. You'll find your way. This is all doable stuff. Yep.
- 30:31Speaker 1: We're gonna go into a break right now.
- 30:32Speaker 2: When we come back, we're gonna talk about atheist teaching
- 30:35Speaker 2: at a Catholic school.
- 30:36Speaker 1: For full disclosure, we've already done this quiz. Want so
- 30:39Speaker 1: Jim just came up with different questions. Yeah, because the
- 30:41Speaker 1: recording fucked up. But you're listening. This episode has brought
- 30:47Speaker 1: to you by therap producers and here are some of them.
- 30:51Speaker 1: Thank you to Jake Schneider, Robert Brownie, Junior, Mint Myra, Uh,
- 30:56Speaker 1: Smitty Scoot, then Don Judy Schneider, kayle Ansberry, and Malia
- 30:59Speaker 1: for now. If you'd like to sponsor the show, go
- 31:02Speaker 1: to patreon dot com slash therapy. All right, So we
- 31:08Speaker 1: tried to do trivia, but we had some tech issues.
- 31:11Speaker 1: What we learned in that first iteration was that my
- 31:13Speaker 1: Whitney based questions, which were lyrics from Disney movies. We
- 31:17Speaker 1: gave Jacob the chance to answer them first, and he dunked.
- 31:20Speaker 1: He just missed. Now none all of them. So in
- 31:24Speaker 1: order to stop him from doing that again, I have
- 31:27Speaker 1: now changed the questions, and now we have other alterations
- 31:30Speaker 1: of Disney.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Based question questions about Whitney's neighborhood. We're gonna get some
- 31:37Speaker 2: Whitney questions, all right, in your backyard?
- 31:41Speaker 1: There is a chair? What color? All right? So these
- 31:45Speaker 1: are multiple choice Disney based questions. The first one is
- 31:48Speaker 1: which Disney character famously says to infinity and beyond buzz
- 31:54Speaker 1: like you all right? What is the name of the
- 32:02Speaker 1: kingdom where the movie Frozen takes place? Ice World? That's
- 32:07Speaker 1: solid off. Would you like the options? Sure? Option A, Atlantica,
- 32:19Speaker 1: Option B, Arundel, Option C Corona, or Option D Agraba?
- 32:25Speaker 1: I know it? What is it? One?
- 32:29Speaker 3: Two, three?
- 32:34Speaker 1: We're going with Arndell. Final answers and yes, that is correct.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I got a tie game. Last question for the Whitney
- 32:41Speaker 1: round in the Lion King, what is the name of
- 32:45Speaker 1: Simba's father's assistant.
- 32:49Speaker 2: Oh man, I've got two different names in my head.
- 32:55Speaker 1: They're basically the same. But okay, I do have a guess. Okay,
- 33:04Speaker 1: this is for Simba's fathers, Simba's father's assistant. We keep
- 33:08Speaker 1: having technical issues. We're sorry, We're yeah, whatever is what
- 33:11Speaker 1: it is? It's the bird. Yeah, I think throwing it
- 33:17Speaker 1: his name Zazo.
- 33:20Speaker 3: Oh wow, that's.
- 33:22Speaker 1: A your final answer.
- 33:23Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with Zazo and I'm gonna hope that's
- 33:26Speaker 2: one of the options.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Okay, do you want options with here? Are you going
- 33:29Speaker 1: in blind?
- 33:29Speaker 3: No? I think he's right, it is.
- 33:35Speaker 1: I did.
- 33:36Speaker 3: I wouldn't hold that out of my brain though, So
- 33:38Speaker 3: I'm imprestrating.
- 33:39Speaker 1: Just crushing.
- 33:42Speaker 3: Oh been like birds birds?
- 33:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I underestimated jacob parents. Alright.
- 33:57Speaker 2: The psychology tests and Disney Disney trivia.
- 34:01Speaker 1: You don't think he's gonna do those. He's gonna He's
- 34:08Speaker 1: got all my gym powers that Disney ship. That's right.
- 34:12Speaker 1: It's like highlights so afround high game. Wow. Very impressive.
- 34:18Speaker 1: All right, Next and probably final question, atheists teaching at
- 34:21Speaker 1: a Catholic school. Dear pod therapy friends. I've been a
- 34:25Speaker 1: supply slash daily occasional teacher for over five years in
- 34:29Speaker 1: different public boards, with a couple of long term stints
- 34:32Speaker 1: and special education. My search for a stable teaching job
- 34:35Speaker 1: has pushed me to teach in a Catholic school board,
- 34:38Speaker 1: and my intake paperwork required me to confirm that I
- 34:40Speaker 1: would adhere to the teachings of the Church. I took
- 34:43Speaker 1: up this new chapter in my life thinking that I
- 34:45Speaker 1: could get by just teaching the students to be good
- 34:47Speaker 1: citizens and focus on the good aspects of the Catholic
- 34:50Speaker 1: Church's teachings. I'm not trying to convert my students one
- 34:54Speaker 1: where the other grew up.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Had a lot of Catholic churches in Louisiana and a
- 34:57Speaker 2: lot of Catholic schools, and yeah that that ain't how
- 34:59Speaker 2: they weren't.
- 35:00Speaker 1: As there are also a few non Catholic students in
- 35:03Speaker 1: the school. In September, my duties expanded into teaching religion
- 35:07Speaker 1: to elementary students around ten to eleven years old. Well, now,
- 35:10Speaker 1: that's just a bad practice on airports, like a terrible idea.
- 35:13Speaker 1: During one of our class discussions, I found myself writing
- 35:16Speaker 1: on the board messages like if you don't know God,
- 35:18Speaker 1: you don't know love. This was an idea expressed by
- 35:21Speaker 1: one of my students. I was writing it down to
- 35:23Speaker 1: ensure proper spelling and punctuation so that the students could
- 35:27Speaker 1: copy this on their worksheets. Last week we started studying
- 35:30Speaker 1: select passages from the Bible. Sadly not Ezekiel twenty five seventeen.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Pause for Samuel L. Jackson impersonation I shall know my
- 35:39Speaker 1: name is a Lord, and I reach forth and smite you.
- 35:43Speaker 3: I knew y'all would know that.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Oh yeah, it's the one that says bad motherfuck, contributing
- 35:49Speaker 1: to this becoming an Italian air show. Now, my wife,
- 35:52Speaker 1: who's also a seasoned teacher in the public board, is
- 35:54Speaker 1: converting to Catholicism because the Catholic schools have many more
- 35:58Speaker 1: resources available, like the number of photocopies, class supplies, budget
- 36:02Speaker 1: for field trips, and guest speakers. I've started going to
- 36:05Speaker 1: church on Sundays as I need a letter from the
- 36:07Speaker 1: priest as a pastoral reference. Oh did I mention that
- 36:11Speaker 1: I'm my wife's mentor during her conversion?
- 36:14Speaker 3: What is going on Catholicism?
- 36:19Speaker 1: Your background check process is terrible? Yeah, I mean for
- 36:22Speaker 1: this reason alone and no other that I can think of.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Are there any reasons or the ultraboys? Those are the
- 36:29Speaker 1: two issues.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Are there any resources?
- 36:33Speaker 1: Oh wait, I've got bad, terrible news. Are there any
- 36:36Speaker 1: resources on how to reconcile? This double life that I'm
- 36:39Speaker 1: having to deal with. I'm not an actor or undercover agent,
- 36:43Speaker 1: but I feel like I'm just putting on a mask
- 36:45Speaker 1: when I go to work at the school or to
- 36:47Speaker 1: participate in church life. Coach advice, fake it till you
- 36:50Speaker 1: make it? Yeah, but what if I'm not interested in
- 36:54Speaker 1: fixing the faked part? Can I just compartmentalize this persona
- 36:58Speaker 1: and keep my sanity? I feel like I'm liking my
- 37:02Speaker 1: job even less these days. I need help. Fucking you
- 37:07Speaker 1: in the face. Atheist rookie teacher at a Catholic school.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Pronouns are he and him, Yeah, wow, thank you. I
- 37:16Speaker 1: lived a version of this. So I taught for eight
- 37:18Speaker 1: years at a very religious Pentecostal school. It was uninitiated.
- 37:24Speaker 1: This is the you know, speaking in tongues, yes, and
- 37:28Speaker 1: rolling in the aisles. And that was this school. And
- 37:31Speaker 1: I taught there. And I didn't grow up that way.
- 37:33Speaker 1: I grew up Baptist, so pretty reserved.
- 37:35Speaker 2: I remember the women couldn't wear makeup, couldn't cut their hair,
- 37:38Speaker 2: and had to wear dresses.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Okay, that's more of a fundamentalist approach. Okay, these folks
- 37:42Speaker 1: were modern, they were just okay, Okay, just a lot
- 37:45Speaker 1: of big stuff.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Yeah, the Southern Pentecostals are a hardcore that's a hardcore group.
- 37:49Speaker 1: Yeah, they weren't quite in that lane. But it was
- 37:51Speaker 1: also a very politically conservative church that was very loud
- 37:55Speaker 1: about that. And during this hour of my life, I
- 37:58Speaker 1: was discovering my progressive, liberal, you know feelings. And that
- 38:02Speaker 1: was a really tough thing because the curriculum was a BECA,
- 38:06Speaker 1: which is like the most conservative Christian shit you'll ever find,
- 38:10Speaker 1: Like it is rude in the Deep South, and so
- 38:13Speaker 1: like I was teaching history and there's like things in
- 38:15Speaker 1: there about how Ronald Reagan was God's gift and like, yeah,
- 38:18Speaker 1: just like really excessive shit that was like, you know,
- 38:21Speaker 1: liberal policies want to kill babies, and like this was
- 38:23Speaker 1: in the text book that I was teaching like seventh graders,
- 38:27Speaker 1: and it was really weird because I had to be
- 38:29Speaker 1: like not correcting that or teaching the kids any differently right,
- 38:33Speaker 1: or like kids would ask me about like speaking in
- 38:35Speaker 1: tongues and like using spiritual gifts and how to like
- 38:38Speaker 1: heal people in faith. Yeah, and I'm like, I don't
- 38:41Speaker 1: know what to say about this because like I don't
- 38:43Speaker 1: align with that. That's not my teachings, but like I
- 38:46Speaker 1: also to be really careful not to accidentally say anything
- 38:49Speaker 1: that's not cool. And now when you were doing this,
- 38:51Speaker 1: did the higher ups?
- 38:52Speaker 2: Did your bosses know that you were not with their
- 38:57Speaker 2: faith lineup or politicals completely it came out okay.
- 39:01Speaker 1: So I flew under the radar for a couple of years.
- 39:03Speaker 1: They knew that I had come from a Baptist background,
- 39:06Speaker 1: but they were cool with it because they'd asked me
- 39:08Speaker 1: about like, are you gonna is this a problem? And
- 39:10Speaker 1: I was like, I don't care. I'm not the guy
- 39:13Speaker 1: who's gonna shoot on your your ideology. I don't care.
- 39:15Speaker 1: I'm really chill, and they're like, all right, cool. But
- 39:17Speaker 1: the political thing they were really serious about. And like,
- 39:20Speaker 1: I flew under the radar for a while until I
- 39:23Speaker 1: wrote a book so not popular known on the It
- 39:28Speaker 1: was Freed Advice. So I wrote a book that was
- 39:31Speaker 1: like about politics, and it was about how I had
- 39:34Speaker 1: come from like this book that only like ants could read,
- 39:37Speaker 1: right right right, yeah ant book yeah and for fathers
- 39:41Speaker 1: later that's right, just for like ants and on goals.
- 39:43Speaker 1: So the gimmick was I had gone to Liberty University.
- 39:47Speaker 1: I was raised inside of the most culturally conservative version
- 39:50Speaker 1: of Christianity, and yet somehow that thinking accidentally led me
- 39:54Speaker 1: backwards into a more liberal interpretation of good moral policy.
- 39:59Speaker 1: And so I found that interesting in most folks that
- 40:02Speaker 1: I shared that with found that really compelling, and so
- 40:04Speaker 1: I was approached by some folks and said, hey, we
- 40:06Speaker 1: think you should write about this. It was like a
- 40:07Speaker 1: great and so I wrote a book basically going over
- 40:10Speaker 1: different policies like immigration, abortion, environmentalism and explaining here's how
- 40:16Speaker 1: I used conservative Christian math to land on a politically
- 40:21Speaker 1: liberal point of view. Okay, unronically, and like still considered
- 40:25Speaker 1: myself conservatively Christian, not conservative politically, but conservative theologically, and
- 40:31Speaker 1: was landing on this politically liberal thing. So I wrote
- 40:33Speaker 1: this book anonymously, and there was a teacher at the
- 40:36Speaker 1: school who caught wind of it and fucking stalked me,
- 40:40Speaker 1: found it and then exposed me to the principle. And
- 40:45Speaker 1: they had like a fucking witch trial, where like they
- 40:48Speaker 1: all like pulled me into this office. I was in
- 40:50Speaker 1: my mid twenties and they were like, it was this
- 40:53Speaker 1: whole fucking thing, and I was living a double life
- 40:56Speaker 1: similar to the writer. So I feel for the writer,
- 40:59Speaker 1: not an easy thing to.
- 41:00Speaker 3: Do well, and I think as teachers or professors that
- 41:04Speaker 3: is probably more common than we think. Like I'm thinking
- 41:07Speaker 3: back to going to a Baptist college and being in
- 41:09Speaker 3: the psychology department. I definitely looked at at least two
- 41:14Speaker 3: specific professors and I look back and I'm like, were
- 41:19Speaker 3: they Christian? Like, yeah, I think they were. It was
- 41:21Speaker 3: in Arkansas. So you're like, even if you're not hardcore
- 41:26Speaker 3: Christian teaching at a Christian school, you're still gonna have
- 41:30Speaker 3: some You're gonna be like socially Christian, I don't know,
- 41:32Speaker 3: like some level. Yeah, you have to present a certain way.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Otherwise you're just out cast.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Like you require you to go to chapel, you know,
- 41:39Speaker 1: or whatever, like going to the service.
- 41:41Speaker 3: That was once a week you have to go as
- 41:43Speaker 3: a student. So yeah, if your professors aren't there, aren't
- 41:45Speaker 3: going or rejecting some of that, then that's a big
- 41:47Speaker 3: freaking deal. So yeah, I do remember wondering that they
- 41:51Speaker 3: could never say, oh I'm not a Christian. That would
- 41:54Speaker 3: never come out of their mouths. But you're definitely like
- 41:56Speaker 3: are you or are you Like I don't know, yeah.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, And it gets really tricky, Like I remember in
- 42:01Speaker 1: that school, I taught a variety of subjects, but like,
- 42:04Speaker 1: I was comfortable with evolution, but the school policy was
- 42:07Speaker 1: evolution is a lie created by the liberal agenda to
- 42:09Speaker 1: deceive you that there is no God. Yeah, And like
- 42:11Speaker 1: I was very comfortable with the concept of religion bother
- 42:14Speaker 1: my faith. It didn't you know, worry me at all.
- 42:16Speaker 1: And then sometimes like the church, the churchy school would
- 42:19Speaker 1: do these excessive religious things, Like there was a time
- 42:21Speaker 1: when there was a girl in the school that was
- 42:23Speaker 1: gay and it came out that she was gay, and
- 42:26Speaker 1: they exposed her in the chapel and like did a
- 42:29Speaker 1: whole like like focus on this kid and shame this kid,
- 42:34Speaker 1: pray it out of her, and full out the demon possession.
- 42:37Speaker 1: And that was fucking weird because I like it, We're
- 42:39Speaker 1: in the modern goddamn era. I'm an adult, this is
- 42:42Speaker 1: a child. I don't think we can do this, Like
- 42:44Speaker 1: I feel like legally, this is not okay for y'all
- 42:47Speaker 1: to do. And so there were definitely these pinch points.
- 42:50Speaker 1: I just like to reiterate that we think a doctrination
- 42:52Speaker 1: is bad. Yeah, yeah, except for some things that we
- 42:56Speaker 1: don't mind. At doctrination. It was weird so I late
- 43:00Speaker 1: to the writer because I remember feeling like.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Man, what'd you do so or did they kick you out?
- 43:06Speaker 1: Well that way, Ultimately I was fired, obvious. Yeah, Ultimately
- 43:10Speaker 1: I was fired. And it's interesting because one of the
- 43:12Speaker 1: longtime supporters of our show is a student of mine
- 43:14Speaker 1: from back in that day, and he's great. He actually
- 43:17Speaker 1: became a pastor and like he's out there doing ministry
- 43:20Speaker 1: and stuff, and like, you know, he he always was
- 43:22Speaker 1: really great with me and stuff, and I was always
- 43:24Speaker 1: really delicate to be like, hey, look, I'm not here
- 43:26Speaker 1: to persuade you one way or the other. But you know,
- 43:28Speaker 1: I like he was one of the fuse, just taking off. Yeah,
- 43:31Speaker 1: that's right. That invited me to be authentic and I was,
- 43:33Speaker 1: you know, somewhat authentic with it. So shout out to you, Brady,
- 43:35Speaker 1: you're a good guy. But yeah, I mean it. So
- 43:37Speaker 1: ultimately time went on and I was ultimately fired, and
- 43:41Speaker 1: it was because I had voted for Obama and so
- 43:44Speaker 1: it had come out that I had voted for Obama
- 43:46Speaker 1: and uh, and it was really tough because they were
- 43:48Speaker 1: like out there banging the drums about Obama being the
- 43:51Speaker 1: anti Christ and like, you know, blah, blah blah, and it.
- 43:53Speaker 2: Was tough because we were a majority. And it turns
- 43:55Speaker 2: out he was. It turns out he was, Yeah, the
- 43:57Speaker 2: world did end. The rapture is on your face. I
- 44:00Speaker 2: was left behind and so now I'm with you.
- 44:02Speaker 3: Assholes didn't read.
- 44:05Speaker 1: My revelation correctly. So no, I ultimately was let go.
- 44:08Speaker 1: And so writer, you know, I really feel for you
- 44:10Speaker 1: because that double life is exhausting tiptoeing around it, and
- 44:15Speaker 1: like I feel, I felt a lot like the writer did.
- 44:17Speaker 1: I was not antagonistic to most of what the school
- 44:20Speaker 1: was teaching. They were teaching prayer and worship and goodness,
- 44:22Speaker 1: and I was like great, and they were like, let's
- 44:23Speaker 1: go serve in a soup kitchen and let's witness to
- 44:26Speaker 1: people by being kind. And I was like, yeah, let's go,
- 44:29Speaker 1: like let's do good work, Like this is great. Do
- 44:31Speaker 1: you think do both of you think that this job
- 44:34Speaker 1: for the writer?
- 44:35Speaker 2: I'm getting a political phone call right now, apparently answered
- 44:38Speaker 2: it might be Trump. Uh don Jacob, I need you. Yeah,
- 44:45Speaker 2: your bot counts big leg. But do you think that
- 44:51Speaker 2: this job is sustainable for the writer long term?
- 44:55Speaker 1: It wasn't for me, and it was tough because I
- 44:57Speaker 1: needed the money. Yeah, and you know, I needed that
- 45:00Speaker 1: importantly in my life, and I stayed and I was
- 45:03Speaker 1: also I liked it and I was good with the kids,
- 45:05Speaker 1: and I had a role in the community, and I
- 45:07Speaker 1: was you know, it was it was good, but it
- 45:09Speaker 1: was really tough because long term, I mean, it was
- 45:11Speaker 1: unsustainable because I was dispat Yeah, if they would have
- 45:15Speaker 1: I would have that would have been great. You know.
- 45:16Speaker 1: Then that of course, if it gets to dress up,
- 45:18Speaker 1: that's half of the battle exactly. So for me, it
- 45:21Speaker 1: wasn't sustainable. And so it's hard to give that advice writer,
- 45:24Speaker 1: because I did live under the radar. I did live
- 45:26Speaker 1: double lives. That the church required that we all attended church,
- 45:30Speaker 1: but they did not require which church. So I was
- 45:33Speaker 1: able to just go to my own little typical church
- 45:35Speaker 1: that was near my community and we were cool, so
- 45:37Speaker 1: I didn't have some of those conflicts. It is so
- 45:40Speaker 1: weird that the writer's wife is converting to Catholics a lot,
- 45:43Speaker 1: and the writer is a sponsors, like the mentor into
- 45:47Speaker 1: the church. That's awesome, I.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Know, I don't am I the only one confused?
- 45:52Speaker 1: I only one that would use it to make my
- 45:53Speaker 1: wife have sex with me because I feel like that's
- 45:55Speaker 1: the obvious move, right, there's a lot you don't understand
- 45:59Speaker 1: about Catholicism. Let me teach it to you in bed.
- 46:03Speaker 1: I feel like that's that's part. I mean, obviously, you
- 46:05Speaker 1: twist scripture to seduce your wife.
- 46:06Speaker 2: You can't spell Catholicism without the d Wait, yeah, I
- 46:14Speaker 2: would be her deacon.
- 46:17Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, yeah that's I don't know how long
- 46:21Speaker 3: you can go doing that. Yeah, you're not your authentic self.
- 46:25Speaker 1: Well, the writer talks about this idea of like fake
- 46:26Speaker 1: it till you make it, but saying like, look it
- 46:28Speaker 1: hurts to fake it. That's not what he wants to do.
- 46:30Speaker 1: But I can appreciate the writer saying I'm cool with
- 46:32Speaker 1: compartmentalizing it in that I don't need to get out
- 46:35Speaker 1: there and express my authentic self, right, And I don't
- 46:39Speaker 1: mind going with the crowd if it's like, hey, we're
- 46:41Speaker 1: all going to pray now, great, that's fine, Hey we're
- 46:43Speaker 1: all going to go attend this church. And and to me,
- 46:45Speaker 1: I think if I were an atheist, I feel like
- 46:48Speaker 1: I would do better attending Catholic church versus another type
- 46:52Speaker 1: of church, because it's so ritualized that it's just like
- 46:55Speaker 1: we're doing these motions.
- 46:56Speaker 2: I've gone to a couple of Catholic and Episcopal, but
- 47:02Speaker 2: like kind of leaning Catholic Episcopal high church services. Yeah, uh,
- 47:06Speaker 2: funerals is what I've been to in the last uh,
- 47:10Speaker 2: you know, number.
- 47:10Speaker 1: Of years, and it doesn't bother me at all. So
- 47:14Speaker 1: because it's pretty ritualized, it.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Just feels like like, I guess I've only been to
- 47:18Speaker 2: those I haven't been to like a fire and brimstone
- 47:21Speaker 2: type church service. Catholic, didn't you No, I grew up
- 47:24Speaker 2: in a Methodist church. Oh Methodist, a lot of Catholics around. Okay,
- 47:28Speaker 2: so you were Louisiana and we're raised in the High Church.
- 47:30Speaker 1: Rich, No, not at all.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Our church was very easy going and easy to get.
- 47:35Speaker 2: It was get along type of type of thing. See
- 47:37Speaker 2: and you you are, which is not the case anymore.
- 47:40Speaker 2: In the atheist podcasting community.
- 47:42Speaker 1: You are a member and in good standing, you know,
- 47:44Speaker 1: like yeah, comedy podcast that is, you know, out there
- 47:47Speaker 1: about it. But what's interesting is I feel like you
- 47:51Speaker 1: could absolutely co exist in a world that was like
- 47:54Speaker 1: like a I think church once called you to talk
- 47:57Speaker 1: about like audio engineering, yeah, and you were like that's fine,
- 48:01Speaker 1: I don't care whatever. I didn't do it because they
- 48:02Speaker 1: didn't want to they didn't want to pay very much. Yeah,
- 48:04Speaker 1: which is the one thing that Jacob Smith will not
- 48:06Speaker 1: stand for. Yeah. I don't care what religion as long
- 48:09Speaker 1: as your money's green.
- 48:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:11Speaker 2: And they were like, well, you know, we're a church,
- 48:12Speaker 2: so mo these people kind of volunteer. I was like, yeah,
- 48:14Speaker 2: not not me.
- 48:15Speaker 1: You called the wrong number. Yeah, I'm not the volunteering business. Yeah,
- 48:19Speaker 1: but no, like, uh yeah, I mean I've been to
- 48:21Speaker 1: a few of those. Maybe it isn't just because it's
- 48:23Speaker 1: so ritualized.
- 48:24Speaker 2: Yeah, And you know, I thinks are said and in
- 48:28Speaker 2: your church services and everything, and I kind of go like, well,
- 48:30Speaker 2: I don't I don't buy that.
- 48:31Speaker 1: I don't believe that. I think that's kind of silly whatever,
- 48:34Speaker 1: like whatever it is that I think about it.
- 48:36Speaker 3: Uh.
- 48:36Speaker 1: But you know, I keep that ship to myself. I'm
- 48:38Speaker 1: not I'm not there to be rude. So you could
- 48:40Speaker 1: probably get along for a while. You could probably just compartmentalize.
- 48:43Speaker 1: I don't know about all this though. Yeah, this is
- 48:45Speaker 1: a lot like religion. That's I don't know how.
- 48:48Speaker 2: You teach religion if you don't believe in the religion,
- 48:51Speaker 2: teach like the history of a religion, but teaching like
- 48:54Speaker 2: active religion.
- 48:55Speaker 1: So I ended up teaching the religion class. Yeah, which
- 48:57Speaker 1: was you know, obviously it was in a very different position.
- 49:00Speaker 1: But I didn't mind it because I was able to.
- 49:02Speaker 1: I was able to, like academically teach it. I didn't
- 49:05Speaker 1: mind saying, right, this is what Pentecostals believe, this is
- 49:08Speaker 1: what Catholics believe, this is what Methodists believe. Because I
- 49:11Speaker 1: was just explain, you can teach from that angle, right,
- 49:14Speaker 1: I don't. I don't. It sounds to me like that's
- 49:16Speaker 1: not the angle that the writer is coming in.
- 49:19Speaker 3: There's a little extra until at the bottom I was
- 49:21Speaker 3: reading through it, okay, and it looks like they writer
- 49:24Speaker 3: said that they're learning how to teach things like music
- 49:26Speaker 3: or gym or health that are outside of like core subjects. Oh,
- 49:30Speaker 3: to maybe avoid I think a lot of religion that
- 49:33Speaker 3: would be great. That's one thing. They also said that
- 49:37Speaker 3: there's like a long commute and things like that, so.
- 49:41Speaker 1: There's a lot of challenges with the job. Yeah, but
- 49:43Speaker 1: it sounds like the wife is also an educator and
- 49:47Speaker 1: is drawn to the Catholic school system. In this case,
- 49:50Speaker 1: wherever this person lives, it might even not be America. Yeah,
- 49:54Speaker 1: it sounds like because they have more resources, like it's
- 49:56Speaker 1: better finance, it's a better program for education table. Yeah yeah,
- 50:00Speaker 1: I mean that was the case. That's the case where
- 50:02Speaker 1: I was growing up.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Yeah, as I mean, the Catholic schools had a lot
- 50:05Speaker 2: more money than the public.
- 50:06Speaker 1: Schools, which is vegacy too. The private Catholic schools are
- 50:09Speaker 1: the big you know, name brands. Oh yeah, they're national headlines.
- 50:12Speaker 1: They have tons of money. Yeah. So and if you're
- 50:14Speaker 1: really and that's part of it, is like if you're
- 50:16Speaker 1: part of the Catholic Church, you get a more likely
- 50:18Speaker 1: position in that school, right.
- 50:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean my opinion is why not still look
- 50:22Speaker 3: a little bit at other job opportunities. Probably there won't
- 50:26Speaker 3: be any. You know, teaching sucks kind of right now,
- 50:29Speaker 3: is what I hear. Yeah, but just keep your head
- 50:31Speaker 3: on the swivel. Still see if there's anything else that
- 50:33Speaker 3: jumps out at you.
- 50:35Speaker 2: As far as you're kind of your own sanity with
- 50:38Speaker 2: it goes, I mean, I guess you'll be as true
- 50:41Speaker 2: to yourself as you can be. Yeah, if it won't
- 50:44Speaker 2: cost you your job, you know, talk to your your superiors.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I assume there's a priest or a nun or something
- 50:49Speaker 1: like that. That's that's running things. Uh.
- 50:51Speaker 2: And again, if it won't cost you your job, maybe
- 50:53Speaker 2: speak with them about some of these concerns that you're having.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 50:56Speaker 2: Uh, you know, coming from the viewpoint of you know,
- 50:58Speaker 2: I'm dedicating I like.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Teaching here, I'm dedicated to the to the children here. Uh.
- 51:02Speaker 2: You know, I'm not I'm not trying to cause trouble here,
- 51:04Speaker 2: but I am having a hard time doing this part
- 51:08Speaker 2: of my job. And you know, you feel like you
- 51:11Speaker 2: may feel like that will just cost you your job well,
- 51:13Speaker 2: and so you might not be able to have that conversation.
- 51:16Speaker 1: We're not talking about. And it seems like the obvious one.
- 51:19Speaker 3: Oh what embrace the faith?
- 51:21Speaker 1: I knew, just be Catholic?
- 51:24Speaker 3: How long until that happens? Like that's how it works.
- 51:27Speaker 3: You're just like, yeah, trickled in.
- 51:29Speaker 1: Just go just do it. Worst case you go to heaven.
- 51:32Speaker 2: You just walk in one day like chewing on a finger.
- 51:35Speaker 2: And when somebody's like, what are you doing?
- 51:36Speaker 1: Do you understand? I did not understand how there's so
- 51:39Speaker 1: many questions about this.
- 51:41Speaker 2: I don't I'm not sure I thought this was going
- 51:44Speaker 2: to change into brand at some point, I think you
- 51:46Speaker 2: just go in the win. You take the Catholicism classes,
- 51:49Speaker 2: you fully convert into the church, you drink the wine,
- 51:52Speaker 2: you eat the host, and then you know what, you
- 51:54Speaker 2: do the sacraments, you do the last confessions.
- 51:57Speaker 1: You get all that ship out, which is good for you,
- 51:59Speaker 1: right to release, get that ship out, do your Hell Mary's,
- 52:02Speaker 1: do your our fathers, pray the little beads, and then yeah,
- 52:06Speaker 1: you know, like, you get a great job, good benefits,
- 52:09Speaker 1: better relationship with your wife, happy students. Maybe you go
- 52:13Speaker 1: to heaven. Maybe it's a crock of shit, but you
- 52:15Speaker 1: know what, you had a better deal here on earth too.
- 52:18Speaker 1: I mean, look, if religions are offering to pay you
- 52:20Speaker 1: to hang out with them, I think there's a strong
- 52:23Speaker 1: argument to just embrace the ship. If you don't believe
- 52:25Speaker 1: in it anyway, fuck them, just yeah, believe it.
- 52:28Speaker 2: I don't know something, you guys, I'm on the high ground.
- 52:34Speaker 1: That just sounds weird. Castles wagering this ship. That's fine.
- 52:38Speaker 3: I mean, it's an option. You're right, it is an option.
- 52:41Speaker 1: But there's a price. What is your price to convert?
- 52:44Speaker 1: I feel like, you know what if there's if there
- 52:46Speaker 1: was money on the line did in name only. I
- 52:50Speaker 1: just have to show up. You have to participate. You
- 52:52Speaker 1: have to do this religion actively and appear to be
- 52:56Speaker 1: a member of it. Figure out an hourly rate. What
- 52:58Speaker 1: you what you can, what you believe in your heart
- 52:59Speaker 1: is not my business, all right, all right, But you're
- 53:01Speaker 1: drinking the fucking wine, you're eating the host you're doing.
- 53:04Speaker 1: You could go to the church luncheon and everything. Yeah,
- 53:06Speaker 1: and participate in the pot luck, you know, bring the
- 53:08Speaker 1: things you like to make. I do like a good
- 53:10Speaker 1: church pot luck. There's nothing wrong with a church pot
- 53:12Speaker 1: luck or a fish fry. Yeah. Ah man, that's one
- 53:14Speaker 1: thing about it does not happen. Well.
- 53:16Speaker 3: That brings up another fact that a lot of people
- 53:20Speaker 3: that are not involved in any type of like collective religion,
- 53:24Speaker 3: they feel like they are missing out on community. Yeah,
- 53:27Speaker 3: and I think the writer shares that a little bit too.
- 53:29Speaker 3: Like teachers end up being friends with other teachers. So
- 53:32Speaker 3: you're already involved with all those people anyway, So it
- 53:35Speaker 3: feels like why not convert or you know, already headed
- 53:37Speaker 3: down that path.
- 53:38Speaker 1: Yeah. One thing that worked for me writer was that
- 53:41Speaker 1: I was able to say, look, I'm part of the
- 53:43Speaker 1: same general branch of Christianity, like I'm in the Protestant wing,
- 53:47Speaker 1: but here's my suburb, and they were tolerant of that,
- 53:50Speaker 1: and then I didn't have to live in authentically. And
- 53:53Speaker 1: I wonder if there's a way to find within the
- 53:56Speaker 1: broader branches of Catholicism a zone that sort of like
- 54:01Speaker 1: we like good works, we're doing nice things, we like tradition,
- 54:07Speaker 1: but we're open minded to like the finality of the theology.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Sometimes you'll find something like that, like as a place
- 54:15Speaker 1: you can park and say, I kind of identify as
- 54:18Speaker 1: this flavor of Catholic. Hopefully maybe maybe that's an offer.
- 54:22Speaker 3: Do some research find that flavor her.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Hopefully something we said helped.
- 54:27Speaker 3: That's a tough one.
- 54:28Speaker 1: It is a tough one, writer. I mean, living a
- 54:30Speaker 1: double life is always going to be a question of sustainability.
- 54:32Speaker 1: I don't know if you're going to be able to
- 54:33Speaker 1: do it forever. If it gets you mentioned in the
- 54:36Speaker 1: extra information that the anxiety is kind of creeping up,
- 54:38Speaker 1: that you're talking to a therapist about it, I really
- 54:40Speaker 1: want you to lean in on that work. I mean
- 54:42Speaker 1: that is huge for you because if you realize this
- 54:44Speaker 1: is starting to you know, cut away from my mental
- 54:46Speaker 1: health I'm struggling now. Then there is no price, right,
- 54:51Speaker 1: there is no amount of correctness in your life. That's
- 54:53Speaker 1: with your mental health. There's still a price that well,
- 54:55Speaker 1: there's always a price again. You know that. Jesus said this,
- 54:59Speaker 1: He said, what good is it to gain the whole
- 55:00Speaker 1: world and lose your soul? The answer is you gain
- 55:03Speaker 1: the whole world. You said it right there, that's something.
- 55:05Speaker 1: The price was in the titles, not nothing. There's a
- 55:07Speaker 1: number there. There is a number.
- 55:09Speaker 2: So all the tea in China also writer, if you
- 55:12Speaker 2: have the chance to become a cardinal, oh yeah.
- 55:15Speaker 1: You should do that gig.
- 55:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I just got back from Rome.
- 55:19Speaker 2: And be a cardinal. If they're like, hey, you want
- 55:23Speaker 2: this red robe, like yep, I sure, stay.
- 55:25Speaker 1: In the lane. Maybe one day you get you know,
- 55:27Speaker 1: your pope.
- 55:27Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, totally tractors.
- 55:30Speaker 1: You want to see ship. If they made me president
- 55:32Speaker 1: of the Republicans, I could do some good in the world,
- 55:34Speaker 1: you know, even if I was like lying about being
- 55:36Speaker 1: a Republican the whole time, Like, I could probably make
- 55:38Speaker 1: some good changes. So run for Pope. Yeah, there you go.
- 55:41Speaker 1: We're going to take a break and then we're going
- 55:42Speaker 1: to end the show. This is an abbreviated show. We're
- 55:45Speaker 1: doing our best. I'm here to supervise us. Here we're questions.
- 55:51Speaker 2: The computers are sucking up.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Our show is brought to you by their producers. There's
- 55:58Speaker 1: a lot of them names at the end. I love
- 56:01Speaker 1: them all. They are good people, They're beautiful people. The
- 56:05Speaker 1: questions that we won't get these are the ones that
- 56:07Speaker 1: are Jacob, Okay, here we go. So you Whitney would
- 56:11Speaker 1: get first DIBs to answer first. If you go blind,
- 56:13Speaker 1: you get to which type of whiskey must, by law
- 56:17Speaker 1: be made in Tennessee and go through a special charcoal
- 56:21Speaker 1: filtering process known as the Lincoln County Process.
- 56:25Speaker 3: Oh, I think I know this? Is it not just tennis?
- 56:31Speaker 1: Do you want to go that's your final answer. I
- 56:34Speaker 1: believe that is your final answer. Jacob, what is do
- 56:37Speaker 1: you want to go blind? Or doing options? I think
- 56:39Speaker 1: it's just Tennessee mash whiskey. The correct answer is Tennessee whiskey.
- 56:43Speaker 1: All right. The fact that you just landed on it,
- 56:47Speaker 1: it is like, yeah, no, you're done. Let me pull.
- 56:50Speaker 2: We're stopping right there, giving legal Tennessee whiskeys either.
- 56:54Speaker 3: Wow, Well that might be another question.
- 56:57Speaker 2: What are they Jack Daniels is the one that you've
- 56:59Speaker 2: heard of.
- 57:00Speaker 1: There are a few others. Question number two, which type
- 57:03Speaker 1: of whiskey is known for having a distinct smoky flavor,
- 57:07Speaker 1: often achieved by drying malted barley over peat fires.
- 57:12Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, is this just Scotch? Scotch's correct? Shit?
- 57:21Speaker 1: I am so impressed with you. Like I was legitimately
- 57:24Speaker 1: impressed with Jacob, I'm more impressed with this. I don't
- 57:27Speaker 1: know any of the ship. This is very impressive.
- 57:30Speaker 3: All right.
- 57:30Speaker 1: Number three, let's see when you can just go for it.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Which American whiskey must contain at least fifty one percent
- 57:38Speaker 1: corn in its mash? Bill be aged in new charred
- 57:42Speaker 1: oak barrels, and can be produced anywhere in the United States.
- 57:49Speaker 1: You can take options if you want.
- 57:50Speaker 3: I guess I'll do options.
- 57:51Speaker 1: Do you want to go blind, Jacob, or do you
- 57:53Speaker 1: want op? I think I want option. I think I
- 57:54Speaker 1: know it, but I will go options. A gentleman. He's
- 57:56Speaker 1: just been said, thank you. Your options are Rye whiskey,
- 58:00Speaker 1: Tennessee whiskey, bourbon, or Canadian whiskey.
- 58:04Speaker 3: We repeat the question, yes, which.
- 58:06Speaker 1: American whiskey must contain fifty one percent corn and be
- 58:10Speaker 1: aged in charred oak barrels, but may be produced anywhere
- 58:13Speaker 1: in the US. Rye, Tennessee bourbon or Canadian Canadian should
- 58:21Speaker 1: be off your list.
- 58:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I was like, I'm Canadian.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Whiskey I don't believe can be produced anywhere in the US, and.
- 58:26Speaker 1: Also can be produced anywhere in the US. Probably eliminates
- 58:29Speaker 1: Tennessee whiskey, which an earlier question referenced must.
- 58:32Speaker 3: Be made between Ryan Bourbon. But I'm like ry wasn't
- 58:35Speaker 3: mentioned in there, so I guess Bourbon.
- 58:38Speaker 1: She goes with Bourbon. What's it going to be, Jacob,
- 58:40Speaker 1: I can go with According to Chad Gpt, Bourbon was
- 58:47Speaker 1: the correct bourbon has to be made in the Bourbon region.
- 58:49Speaker 1: I don't fucking know, it says Bourbon.
- 58:52Speaker 3: A good point.
- 58:52Speaker 1: An Ai, I am a mistake.
- 58:56Speaker 2: You're Shenanigans because I don't think all that other stuff
- 58:59Speaker 2: has to do with Rye whiskey.
- 59:00Speaker 1: But it's that's the only one of the lists that
- 59:03Speaker 1: can be produced.
- 59:04Speaker 3: Any Bourbon county or whatever. The Bourbon Okay.
- 59:08Speaker 2: Well you know what, I well decide they make what
- 59:14Speaker 2: they what they do now is they do the same
- 59:16Speaker 2: thing that Champagne does and make it all over.
- 59:19Speaker 1: The place, but like Bourbon, it's the Bourbon region.
- 59:22Speaker 3: Okay, outside of Kentucky.
- 59:24Speaker 1: Interesting, I mean you can make the same stuff, says.
- 59:28Speaker 3: Bourbon can be made outside of Kentucky.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 59:30Speaker 3: Maybe they're doing a Champagne. Yeah, because before it'd be
- 59:34Speaker 3: like Champagne is the only one from Champagne exactly the.
- 59:37Speaker 1: Region of sparkling Pagne.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm okay with that though.
- 59:43Speaker 1: All right. Good So then, because I was a little
- 59:45Speaker 1: confused about the Rye thing, I.
- 59:46Speaker 3: Know, I was like, but ry wasn't mentioned anywhere, so
- 59:48Speaker 3: by default.
- 59:50Speaker 1: Right, so it looks like Whitney takes the game. Congratulations,
- 59:54Speaker 1: it's a whole new world, a whole new well movie Aladdin.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: But they were in the same year or two show
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: Girls show Disney's show Girl. Yeah, strip tease starring to
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: me more. As we wrap up the show, we want
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: to remind you can go to Patriot dot com slash therapy.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: You can get our extended show ad free a day earlier,
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: as well as enjoy our live chat discord community, our
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: weekly deep dives, interviews, skill shares, research roundups and rants.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: And right now we've got two series going on. We've
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: got Nick's Better Know a therap Producer series where he
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: interviews thera producers and asks them questions about themselves, and
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: you also get to hear why they support the show
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: and what draws them into our community. And then we've
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: got another series going with our intern Emma, and Emma's
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: doing a Therapy one oh one series, and as of
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: this recording, we have three in the queue. And the
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: second installment is how to set goals in therapy and
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: getting into the weeds of how that is done and
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: why that is important. And then her third installment, I
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: think has to do with getting into techniques and interventions,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: so really exciting stuff. Patreon dot com Therapy, and we
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: do have a new supporter or two as we are
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: reading this, and again we're recording a little bit out
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: of order, so we're recording this as of November fifth,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: So if you've started supporting the show after November fifth,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: I may have missed it. But I am now scrolling
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: through my emails because somewhere in here is the email
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: from Patreon telling me who the new supporter is. Yep,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: or you could just finish up the show. I'm just
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: gonna finish up the show. It's somebody they seemed nice.
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: I don't know. But most importantly, we have this whole
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: new level of giving that we've had to literally name
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: the therap paramour and so very special reflective thanks to
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: the dark Lord himself, Jim's Fascia and dark Lord. I
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: honestly don't get the Jim's Fashi a bit. And I
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: even went into a secret channel in our discord that
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: is just filled with moderators and was like, what am
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I missing? What is the Jim's fashion thing? Somebody explained
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: the joke and they too were like, honestly, bro, I
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: do not know the reference, so you may have to
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: educate us so that we can get that. There was
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: one more person who is now sponsoring the show, and
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: it is Ah I got it. John kra Vatas is
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: also now a new Therapod. Thanks John, Thank you John
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: for supporting the show. And of course we want to
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: thank our therap partners, the benevolent, revered, generous, and flagrantly
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: pro therapy diehards who love you all so much they
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: give till it hurts, Dirty Bee and Piket, and we
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: want to think our bosses, the mysterious and shrouded Illuminati
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: members of the fan Club, the Therap producers, Thank you,
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Jake Schneider, myro Robert Brownie Junior, Mint, Smitty, Scoop and
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Down Judy Schneider, Schneider, Kayla Ansberry, Malia Leon cassab Mason Miller,
