- 0:00Speaker 1: A series of office-safe burglaries has burglary detail working through
- 0:04Speaker 1: crime lab evidence, informants, and the department's burglary files. On
- 0:09Speaker 1: April 19th, 1953, NBC brought listeners Dragnet, episode 200, Big Rip.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Jack Webb is Sergeant Joe Friday, with Ben Alexander as
- 0:22Speaker 1: Officer Frank Smith, following a repeated method that has produced
- 0:25Speaker 1: very few useful leads. Then Don Jackson, previously cleared in
- 0:31Speaker 1: another burglary investigation, telephones with information that may move the
- 0:35Speaker 1: case forward. From Los Angeles and the day watch of
- 0:39Speaker 1: burglary detail, here is Dragnet. Now, back to the golden
- 0:44Speaker 1: age of radio.
- 0:45Speaker 2: The Golden Age of Radio.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, the story you are about to hear
- 1:00Speaker 3: is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 1:12Speaker 3: You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to burglary details. A
- 1:16Speaker 3: string of safe burglaries breaks out in your city. In
- 1:19Speaker 3: the past two months, 35 safes have been broken into.
- 1:23Speaker 3: You know, there's more than one man in the operation.
- 1:25Speaker 3: You've got no lead to the thieves' identity.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Your job, get them.
- 1:40Speaker 5: Dragnet, the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
- 1:44Speaker 5: next 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 1:48Speaker 5: you will travel step-by-step on the.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Side of the law to.
- 1:50Speaker 5: An actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 1:54Speaker 4: From beginning to end, from crime.
- 1:56Speaker 5: To punishment, Dragnet is the story of your police force
- 2:00Speaker 5: in action.
- 2:06Speaker 4: It was Tuesday, August 18th. It was warm in Los Angeles.
- 2:08Speaker 3: We were working the day watch out of burglary detail.
- 2:10Speaker 4: My partner's Frank Smith, the boss of Thad Brown, Chief
- 2:12Speaker 4: of Detectives, planning Friday. It was 1.34 p.m. when we got.
- 2:15Speaker 3: To the second floor of the Central Jail building, the
- 2:18Speaker 3: crime lab. Couldn't sleep last night. Say, and I had
- 2:22Speaker 3: another beast. Oh, what about this time?
- 2:25Speaker 4: Cards, you know, can ask. Yeah?
- 2:27Speaker 3: Folks back door came over after dinner and we got
- 2:29Speaker 3: to playing.
- 2:30Speaker 4: They play real good. Mm-hmm. It wasn't long before we
- 2:33Speaker 4: were really getting schlocked. What? You know, schlocked. Beaten. Oh. Terrible. Terrible.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Last hand, they got down right away, Joe. Seemed like
- 2:43Speaker 3: everything I threw on them, they could use.
- 2:45Speaker 4: Picked up everything.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Well, I couldn't do anything right. Just kept building up mills,
- 2:50Speaker 3: they did. Big thing for us was to get out
- 2:52Speaker 3: as quick as we could. You know, get the hand
- 2:54Speaker 3: over with.
- 2:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Faye wasn't doing any good, finally. I still don't know
- 2:58Speaker 3: how they let it happen. I got enough points to
- 3:01Speaker 3: go down, so I asked Faye if it's okay.
- 3:04Speaker 4: You have to do that, you know, ask your partner
- 3:06Speaker 4: to get the hand of it. You know that? Well,
- 3:08Speaker 4: I played it a couple of times. Yeah, with you. Oh,
- 3:09Speaker 4: that's right. Well, you might not believe it, but you
- 3:13Speaker 4: know what she said? No. She said that she didn't
- 3:17Speaker 4: think it was time. Is that right? Yeah. I know
- 3:20Speaker 4: it's kind of picky, but.
- 3:22Speaker 3: There they were, the other kids just piling up points,
- 3:24Speaker 3: schlocking us all over the place.
- 3:25Speaker 4: Schlocking. Yeah, hanging around a couple of more times.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Each time I asked Faye if she wants to get out,
- 3:31Speaker 3: each time you know what she said?
- 3:33Speaker 4: No. That's it? No. Well, what finally happened? Oh, the
- 3:37Speaker 4: other folks ran out of charge. Wasn't any more plays,
- 3:40Speaker 4: so they got out.
- 3:41Speaker 6: 3,600 points.
- 3:43Speaker 4: And I found out why Faye didn't want to quit. Why?
- 3:46Speaker 4: Had a deuce. What? A deuce of two, you know? Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Said she didn't want to get caught with it. Yeah, well,
- 3:54Speaker 4: we better get started, huh? Wait a minute. That's not
- 3:57Speaker 4: the worst of it, let me tell you. All right.
- 4:00Speaker 4: All night we're playing, see? All night. I'm saving cards.
- 4:03Speaker 4: You know, I'm like 10... Like, they get tens. They
- 4:06Speaker 4: save tens. Yeah.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I guess everybody saves tens. Well, I save more than
- 4:09Speaker 3: other guys. They save a lot of tens. So we
- 4:11Speaker 3: get all through, and you know what? We find out
- 4:13Speaker 3: there are only seven tens in the deck. One of
- 4:16Speaker 3: them's missing.
- 4:17Speaker 4: All night. There's seven tens. Well, that's dreadful. Well, I
- 4:22Speaker 4: tell you. You're a schlock. Schlock. Didn't sleep a wink. Friday? Yeah, Ray.
- 4:30Speaker 4: Back here. Girl's out to lunch. Come on back. Hi,
- 4:35Speaker 4: how's it going, Ray? Moving around, that's about all. Hot out, huh? Yeah,
- 4:38Speaker 4: paper says it's going to go over 90 today. Too
- 4:40Speaker 4: hot for me. Yeah, why are you coming on the
- 4:42Speaker 4: job this morning? Finishing up. Looks like the rest of them. Yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Got some pictures here. Take a look.
- 4:50Speaker 5: Here's a picture of the marks that are left on
- 4:51Speaker 5: the door this morning. See those two long.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Scratches on the wood? Yeah, here? Yeah, over here.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Here's a picture from the Argosy Manufacturing Company's door.
- 5:01Speaker 4: See? Same two marks.
- 5:03Speaker 5: Pretty safe bet to figure that both doors are open
- 5:05Speaker 5: to the same pie bar.
- 5:06Speaker 4: Yeah, same type of entrance made this time, huh?
- 5:09Speaker 5: Yeah, just the one mark on the door. They know
- 5:10Speaker 5: what they're doing. Insert the bar, hit it once, and
- 5:12Speaker 5: the door opens.
- 5:13Speaker 4: How about the safe? What do you got on that thing? Here.
- 5:16Speaker 4: This is the picture we got of the room. Same
- 5:17Speaker 4: as the others. Standard ribbed job, nothing different. How about marks? No,
- 5:21Speaker 4: no help there. Here's the pictures.
- 5:23Speaker 5: Looks like the same tool that was used on the
- 5:26Speaker 5: other job.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Did you find anything else, Ray? No.
- 5:28Speaker 5: At least nothing that helps. Leighton Prince picked up a
- 5:31Speaker 5: couple from Fayette. He wants to manage the other place.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Nothing else to give us anything.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Well, I'd say they were the same, Buck.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Yeah, either that or they're lending their tools to the
- 5:39Speaker 5: boys in the neighborhood.
- 5:40Speaker 4: Yeah, well, that isn't likely. Will you read, Ray? Yeah, thanks. Frank?
- 5:45Speaker 4: There's the light. Ray?
- 5:52Speaker 5: Thanks.
- 5:53Speaker 4: We've been leaning on you guys for this one, huh? Yeah,
- 5:55Speaker 4: Skipper's taking a lot of heat. What's this make for him? Thirty-four, thirty-five? Thirty-five.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Six months. Any near it, though? No, not much.
- 6:03Speaker 5: Anything to tell how many men there are?
- 6:04Speaker 3: It'd be hard to say for sure. The way they
- 6:06Speaker 3: work figures about three or four, maybe. Yeah, that's the
- 6:08Speaker 3: way it looks.
- 6:09Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You haven't got any idea who they are, huh? No, nothing.
- 6:39Speaker 5: You haven't got any idea who they are. We could
- 6:41Speaker 5: maybe use the antithene on their tools.
- 6:43Speaker 4: That's great. We've got to find the tools before we
- 6:45Speaker 4: use that. We've got no idea where they plant them. Mm-hmm.
- 6:48Speaker 5: Seems that one of your informants would be able to
- 6:50Speaker 5: come up with something on him.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Yeah, you'd think so. We've checked them all, Ray. No
- 6:52Speaker 3: leads to the gang. Doesn't seem there's anybody in town
- 6:54Speaker 3: that knows who they are. Anybody new operating on them?
- 6:57Speaker 4: No, we checked that out, too. Said the stats office
- 6:59Speaker 4: makes so many runs that they're wearing out the cards.
- 7:02Speaker 7: M.O.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Isn't new.
- 7:03Speaker 3: It's been used before, but all the possibles have been
- 7:05Speaker 3: checked out. Stuff from Bratton up at C.I.I., the other
- 7:07Speaker 3: lead from the A.P.D.s, they've all been cleared. No, we
- 7:11Speaker 3: got just what we started with a gang.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Working when they want to, where they want to, and
- 7:14Speaker 4: there's nothing we can do about it. Well, I wish
- 7:15Speaker 4: there was more I could do to help, huh? Yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 4: I gotta get back to work. Got some precipitant tests.
- 7:19Speaker 5: Homicide wants us there soon.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Yeah, well, we'll see you later, Ray. Right. You want
- 7:23Speaker 4: this stuff booked? Yeah, we'll take care of it. Okay.
- 7:27Speaker 4: Excuse me a minute.
- 7:27Speaker 7: Yes.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Crime lab, Tinker. Yeah? Yeah, they're both here. Which one? Yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 4: hold on. Joe? Yeah? This is your office. Thanks. Friday. Oh, yeah, Chandler.
- 7:46Speaker 6: Uh-huh.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Wendy, call. Yeah, well, what's that number?
- 7:49Speaker 2: 4-4?
- 7:52Speaker 4: Right. Yeah, I'll call him right away. Bye. Bye. Chandler, huh? Yeah,
- 7:57Speaker 4: Don Jackson called. Said he wanted to get in touch
- 7:59Speaker 4: with us. Jackson? Doesn't ring any bells? The guy we
- 8:01Speaker 4: picked last month. Remember? Looked like the guy who was
- 8:05Speaker 4: in on the service station job. Oh, yeah, I remember.
- 8:07Speaker 4: The guy with the white mustache. Mm-hmm. Hello? Don Jackson?
- 8:10Speaker 4: Or could I speak to him, please? Don? Joe Friday. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, well,
- 8:19Speaker 4: it's 1.47 now. Take us about ten minutes. How about two?
- 8:22Speaker 4: All right. Fine. Yeah, we know where it is. Right.
- 8:26Speaker 4: We'll see you there. All right. Bye. What do you want?
- 8:30Speaker 4: I want to see him. He's got a rumble on him.
- 8:38Speaker 4: John Jackson had been.
- 8:39Speaker 3: A suspect in a series of service station burglaries we'd investigated.
- 8:42Speaker 3: He'd been picked up and interrogated, but investigation showed that
- 8:45Speaker 3: he couldn't have been involved in the theft. Since he'd
- 8:47Speaker 3: been released, we'd heard nothing from him, and as far
- 8:49Speaker 3: as we knew, he'd gone back to his job in
- 8:50Speaker 3: a downtown clothing store. From what he told me on
- 8:54Speaker 3: the phone, he had some information about the current series
- 8:56Speaker 3: of safe burglaries. 1.48 p.m., Frank and I left the
- 9:00Speaker 3: crime lab and drove over to the store where Jackson worked.
- 9:03Speaker 4: He managed to get relieved, and he took us to
- 9:04Speaker 4: a small coffee shop near the store.
- 9:07Speaker 3: We sat down and ordered some coffee, and Jackson told
- 9:09Speaker 3: us what he knew about the burglary.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Now, I could be wrong about this. I don't think so.
- 9:13Speaker 4: But outside, it could be. Uh-huh. Johnny, you got any
- 9:16Speaker 4: one reason for figuring that Scott Cullis tied in with
- 9:18Speaker 4: the job? Well, nothing I can put my finger on,
- 9:20Speaker 4: you know.
- 9:20Speaker 7: Just that the guy's never done a full day's work
- 9:22Speaker 7: in his life. Don't think he knows what a callous is.
- 9:25Speaker 7: Yet he's always loaded, always got a role.
- 9:28Speaker 4: It's real, too.
- 9:29Speaker 7: Not like them you see sometimes with a big bill
- 9:31Speaker 7: on the outside and ones in the middle.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Now, this guy's loaded, you know? Yeah. Where'd you meet him?
- 9:36Speaker 7: Well, I was sitting in a bar down the street
- 9:38Speaker 7: one night having a belt before dinner.
- 9:40Speaker 4: We got to talking. Ended up eating together that night.
- 9:43Speaker 4: You remember when this was, Don, when you first met him? Well,
- 9:45Speaker 4: let me see. Yeah, it was the day I got
- 9:47Speaker 4: the trench coat from England. Now, let me see. That
- 9:50Speaker 4: might get about August 4th. Yeah. Yeah, it was the
- 9:53Speaker 4: night I got the coat.
- 9:54Speaker 7: Come to think of it, that's what got us to talking,
- 9:56Speaker 7: the coat.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Why don't I understand? Well, you see, I got.
- 9:59Speaker 6: This here coat.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I had it sent over from England. It's a real beauty.
- 10:02Speaker 4: All kinds of linings and wind straps in the sleeves.
- 10:04Speaker 4: It's great, you know? Uh-huh.
- 10:06Speaker 7: Well, I had him send his coat to the store.
- 10:08Speaker 7: He got there on the 4th. I had it with
- 10:10Speaker 7: me that night. Scotty noticed it. We got to talking
- 10:13Speaker 7: about clothes and went to dinner.
- 10:15Speaker 6: He asked me how much the coat cost.
- 10:17Speaker 4: I told him to run about 40, maybe 50 bucks.
- 10:19Speaker 6: He asked me if I could get one for him,
- 10:21Speaker 6: and I told him, sure. It'd take a couple weeks.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
- 10:25Speaker 7: Well, he asked me to send a letter to my friend,
- 10:27Speaker 7: Air Mail Special, and asked him to send a coat
- 10:30Speaker 7: over by express.
- 10:31Speaker 4: I told him I would. And then he asked me
- 10:33Speaker 4: if I wanted to pay him advance. Yeah.
- 10:35Speaker 7: I told him, no, wait until I knew just how
- 10:36Speaker 7: much the.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Coat was going wrong. You know, duty and postage and
- 10:39Speaker 4: all that. Yeah, I know.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Well, he said that'd be okay with him. I saw
- 10:42Speaker 6: him a couple times after that.
- 10:44Speaker 7: And every time he'd ask about the coat, I told
- 10:46Speaker 7: him that was in the works, you know.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Well, finally got the coat. It was beautiful.
- 10:50Speaker 7: Never saw the guy again. I'm out 46 bucks. Promise
- 10:54Speaker 7: God he'll leave me with that coat.
- 10:55Speaker 4: My own money, too. 46 bucks. I don't make enough
- 10:58Speaker 4: to lose that kind of money, you know. Oh, that's
- 10:59Speaker 4: too bad, Jackson. But why do you think this guy
- 11:01Speaker 4: had anything to do with the burglary? Well, now, I
- 11:03Speaker 4: just told you. For one thing, the money. Always had
- 11:05Speaker 4: a lot, but he never had a job. No place
- 11:07Speaker 4: to get the money.
- 11:08Speaker 7: Not only that, but one night, well, I saw him.
- 11:11Speaker 7: We were going out to dinner, and he said he
- 11:13Speaker 7: couldn't quite make it then.
- 11:14Speaker 6: That something had come up. That he had to take
- 11:16Speaker 6: a rain check, you know.
- 11:17Speaker 4: Uh-huh. Well, I asked him what had come up, what
- 11:20Speaker 4: was so important. He said he had to see a
- 11:22Speaker 4: guy over in East LA, some sort of a business deal.
- 11:24Speaker 4: You say what the deal was about? No, I wouldn't say.
- 11:27Speaker 6: The next day, show was uploaded.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Got a roll on, choke a horse. I asked him
- 11:31Speaker 4: where to get it.
- 11:32Speaker 7: I kid him about being one of the guys who
- 11:33Speaker 7: ripped the safe in the office he planned.
- 11:35Speaker 4: What'd he say to that?
- 11:36Speaker 7: Nothing, just got real serious, you know? Asked him why
- 11:39Speaker 7: I asked him that. What made me think he.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Was in on the job?
- 11:41Speaker 7: I kept telling him I didn't know anything about it.
- 11:43Speaker 4: I was just kidding.
- 11:44Speaker 6: He finally bought it and said it was okay, but.
- 11:47Speaker 7: He said I shouldn't go around saying things like that.
- 11:49Speaker 4: All right, go ahead. Well, I got the coat.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Looked Scotty up to give it to him. Wouldn't pay
- 11:54Speaker 7: for it. They locked the coat thing up or something.
- 11:57Speaker 7: I don't know, set the wrong size, and I'm stuck
- 11:59Speaker 7: with it. He wouldn't have anything to do with it.
- 12:02Speaker 7: I figured since I ordered.
- 12:03Speaker 4: It for him, it ain't my fault that it's big.
- 12:04Speaker 4: He should pay for it, you know, 46 bucks. Now,
- 12:07Speaker 4: any way you look at it, I laid out the dough.
- 12:08Speaker 4: I figured he should make good on it. He wouldn't
- 12:11Speaker 4: do it.
- 12:11Speaker 7: And I got sore, and I figured maybe you'd like
- 12:13Speaker 7: to know how he acted about the urgency job.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Larry's a bum. Forty-six bucks that coat cost. You know
- 12:17Speaker 4: where the Scott lives? No, I haven't got the slightest idea.
- 12:20Speaker 4: But I got his phone number, though. I'll give you that.
- 12:22Speaker 4: Can you give us a description of him? Sure. He's
- 12:23Speaker 4: a sneaky little guy. No wonder the coat won't fit.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Little bitty guy, you know.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Yeah. Now, you say his full name is Leonard Scott,
- 12:29Speaker 4: is that right? Yeah. Call me bum. I hope you
- 12:31Speaker 4: get him. Well, we'll talk to him, Don.
- 12:33Speaker 6: He knows something about it.
- 12:34Speaker 7: I'll bet money on it he knows. Say, I don't
- 12:37Speaker 7: like to bring this up, but you guys could do
- 12:39Speaker 7: me a big favor, you know.
- 12:40Speaker 4: What's that?
- 12:43Speaker 7: No, I don't suppose you could.
- 12:44Speaker 4: What is it, huh?
- 12:46Speaker 6: You know anybody could use a size 52 trench coat?
- 12:57Speaker 4: We continued to talk to Don Jackson.
- 12:58Speaker 3: We got the description of Leonard Scott and his phone number.
- 13:01Speaker 4: 3.15 p.m., we drove back to.
- 13:03Speaker 3: The city hall and checked the names through R & I.
- 13:04Speaker 3: We came up with several possibles.
- 13:06Speaker 4: The mug shots were pulled on them, and they were
- 13:08Speaker 4: shown to Jackson.
- 13:09Speaker 3: He was able to identify one of them as the
- 13:11Speaker 3: man he told us about. The suspect had a record
- 13:13Speaker 3: for burglary and had served two terms in the state
- 13:15Speaker 3: penitentiary at San Quentin.
- 13:17Speaker 4: He'd served his full term and was not on parole.
- 13:20Speaker 3: We checked the last address on his convict registration card
- 13:23Speaker 3: and we found that he lived in a rooming house
- 13:24Speaker 3: on West 11th Street. The phone number he'd given Jackson
- 13:27Speaker 3: was the same as the one on the registration card.
- 13:30Speaker 4: We drove over to talk to him.
- 13:31Speaker 3: We found that he wasn't in his room and from
- 13:33Speaker 3: the landlady we learned that he was expected back around
- 13:35Speaker 3: 7 that evening. We checked his room in company with
- 13:37Speaker 3: the landlady and then we called the office and told
- 13:39Speaker 3: them where we were in the event they had to
- 13:41Speaker 3: contact us. We waited in the living room of the house.
- 13:43Speaker 4: For the suspect to return. 7.15 p.m. So? Yeah. It
- 13:50Speaker 4: matches the description, doesn't it? Come on. Just a minute.
- 13:53Speaker 4: You Leonard Scott? Yeah. Who are you? Police officers. I'd
- 13:56Speaker 4: like to talk to you. What's this all about? It'd
- 13:58Speaker 4: be better if we went up to your room. Oh.
- 14:02Speaker 4: All right. Come on up.
- 14:05Speaker 6: Can't you give me some idea what this is all about?
- 14:07Speaker 4: We'll talk to you about it. Go ahead. Open the door.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 4: Okay, what's the pitch? You've been through it before. Your
- 14:23Speaker 4: next turn. We interrupt this program to bring you a
- 14:27Speaker 4: special news bulletin. Ladies and gentlemen from the NBC newsroom.
- 14:35Speaker 8: In New York, here are the latest names of the
- 14:37Speaker 8: men to be sent back to Freedom Village in Moonsan.
- 14:41Speaker 8: We have four more names for you at this time
- 14:44Speaker 8: of our sick and wounded who have been sent back
- 14:47Speaker 8: by the Rebs to the Allied side in Moonsan.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Corporal Vernon C. Warren of St. Louis, Missouri. Vernon C.
- 14:55Speaker 4: Warren of St. Louis, Missouri. Roy M. Jones of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- 15:00Speaker 8: Jones gave no rank.
- 15:01Speaker 4: Roy M.
- 15:02Speaker 8: Jones of Minneapolis, Minnesota. PFC David Ludlam, L-U-D-L-U-M, of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
- 15:10Speaker 8: And PFC Ray Medina of New York City. PFC Ray
- 15:14Speaker 8: Medina of New York City. All of these men are
- 15:17Speaker 8: reported to be in fine shape. Stay tuned to your
- 15:20Speaker 8: NBC station for the later news.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Oh, you're out of your mind.
- 15:28Speaker 3: Yeah, we got a witness who tells us he showed
- 15:29Speaker 3: up with a pocket full of money the next day.
- 15:31Speaker 4: He's fallen twice before for burglary.
- 15:32Speaker 3: You can't account for your time before or after today,
- 15:34Speaker 3: but you haven't had an alibi for the night of
- 15:36Speaker 3: the hike.
- 15:36Speaker 4: You got no steady job, but you got plenty of money. Now,
- 15:38Speaker 4: come off it, Scott. We got your nail for the job,
- 15:40Speaker 4: and you know it.
- 15:40Speaker 3: You got a choice of giving us a hand on
- 15:42Speaker 3: this thing, and it'll be marked down in your favor,
- 15:43Speaker 3: or you can be a big man and stand for
- 15:44Speaker 3: this thing alone.
- 15:45Speaker 4: It's up to you. We'll play it any way you want.
- 15:48Speaker 4: You figure you can make me for the job? Looks
- 15:50Speaker 4: like it won't be too tough. You're in the middle, Scott.
- 15:51Speaker 4: Why don't you top out? What do I get for
- 15:54Speaker 4: turning things? I told you it'd be marked down that way.
- 15:56Speaker 4: How about it, Scott? All right, I guess I've got
- 15:59Speaker 4: to go with you. I wasn't in on the jobs.
- 16:01Speaker 4: I didn't really have anything to do with the casings.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Helped a little bit. Not much. Just a little. What'd
- 16:06Speaker 4: you figure of it? Once I worked as a lookout
- 16:08Speaker 4: for him. So what? I didn't give you the name. Like,
- 16:11Speaker 4: see you get them, lousy bunch. Hope you get them good.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Make every one of them lousy. Mum's the way they
- 16:15Speaker 4: treat her. What do you mean by that? Big deal.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Had the cops running around in circles. Big deal. Nothing.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Work along with him. Everything will be fine. Big deal.
- 16:24Speaker 4: How many of them are there? Four. Four real bums.
- 16:26Speaker 5: They said they were going to take care of me.
- 16:27Speaker 5: They told me I'd get my share of the money.
- 16:29Speaker 4: Lousy liars. One job I was with them.
- 16:31Speaker 5: After that, they told me I hadn't done enough to
- 16:33Speaker 5: earn my way, that I wasn't any help to anybody.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Well, next time you see them, you can tell them. Yeah?
- 16:36Speaker 4: They were wrong.
- 16:43Speaker 3: We got the names of the four men who were
- 16:45Speaker 3: involved in the burglaries. We took Leonard Scott down to
- 16:47Speaker 3: the city hall and pulled the packages on the four suspects.
- 16:50Speaker 3: He gave us a positive identification on them. We checked
- 16:53Speaker 3: with Captain Wisdom and it was decided to wait until
- 16:55Speaker 3: we could catch the suspects in the actual attempt to
- 16:57Speaker 3: commit a burglary. We checked out the address of the
- 17:00Speaker 3: four suspects and got as much information as we could
- 17:02Speaker 3: on them without letting them know that they were under surveillance.
- 17:04Speaker 3: Additional teams of men were assigned to the stakeout. Each
- 17:07Speaker 3: of them was watched 24 hours a day and each
- 17:09Speaker 3: of the teams of detectives were in constant contact with
- 17:12Speaker 3: the burglary division.
- 17:13Speaker 4: Two days passed. None of the suspects made any attempt
- 17:16Speaker 4: to make contact with the others.
- 17:18Speaker 3: We met with the district attorney and it was decided
- 17:20Speaker 3: that in the interest of bringing the gang to justice.
- 17:22Speaker 4: The first suspect, Leonard Scott, should be released.
- 17:24Speaker 3: From custody to act as an informant for us. He
- 17:27Speaker 3: would be kept under constant surveillance. Frank and I were
- 17:30Speaker 3: assigned to follow him. In the next three days, he.
- 17:32Speaker 4: Went about his business as usual.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Each evening, he'd leave his rooming house and walk through
- 17:35Speaker 3: the bars in the downtown area. He told us that
- 17:38Speaker 3: contact and information regarding the burglary was made by the
- 17:41Speaker 3: leader of the gang, one of the suspects named Howard Ramsey.
- 17:44Speaker 3: On Monday, August 24th, we saw Ramsey.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Approach Leonard Scott.
- 17:47Speaker 3: They talked briefly in the rear of a bar on
- 17:49Speaker 3: 6th Street, and then Ramsey left. We waited for about
- 17:52Speaker 3: 15 minutes, and then we saw Scott leave the bar.
- 17:54Speaker 4: We followed him down the street to an all-night coffee stand.
- 17:57Speaker 3: We sat down next to him at the counter, and
- 17:58Speaker 3: at the first opportunity, he told us what Ramsey had said.
- 18:01Speaker 4: You guys haven't got long to wait. What'd he say?
- 18:03Speaker 4: The deal's set. There's gonna be a machine shop out
- 18:05Speaker 4: in West L.A. Remember, the state has over 25 grand
- 18:07Speaker 4: in it. Biggest job they've tackled. Can you say how
- 18:10Speaker 4: it's gonna work? Yeah, I'll fill you in on it.
- 18:12Speaker 5: Thought you might want to get in touch with your office, though.
- 18:14Speaker 4: How's that? It's gonna work tonight.
- 18:27Speaker 5: You are listening to Dragnet, the authentic story of your
- 18:30Speaker 5: police force in.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Action.
- 18:43Speaker 4: 9.32 p.m.
- 18:43Speaker 3: We got the rest of the story from Leonard Scott.
- 18:46Speaker 3: The plan, as he outlined it for us, was that
- 18:48Speaker 3: the four other suspects would not meet until they were
- 18:50Speaker 3: at the plant that was to be burglarized. We got
- 18:52Speaker 3: in touch with the men who were following the suspects
- 18:54Speaker 3: and told.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Them what had happened.
- 18:55Speaker 3: 10.07 p.m. We met with Captain Wisdom and put the
- 18:58Speaker 3: operating plan into effect. It had been arranged that all
- 19:01Speaker 3: of the men following the suspects would.
- 19:02Speaker 4: Be in three-way radio cars so that.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Constant communication could be kept between the units of the operation.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Additional officers were planted on the roofs of the buildings
- 19:10Speaker 3: surrounding the plant to be burglarized. These men would be
- 19:13Speaker 3: equipped with walkie-talkies so they could keep in constant touch
- 19:15Speaker 3: with each other and with us in a three-way radio car.
- 19:18Speaker 3: In this way, we could direct operations and we'd have
- 19:21Speaker 3: a complete picture of what was happening in the immediate vicinity.
- 19:24Speaker 3: A blockade system was set up to be put into
- 19:25Speaker 3: operation once the suspects had entered the trap so that
- 19:28Speaker 3: escape would be impossible. 11.45 p.m. The plan was completed,
- 19:32Speaker 3: and the men involved were in their assigned positions. We
- 19:35Speaker 3: followed Leonard Scott to his rooming house, and he changed
- 19:37Speaker 3: to his working clothes. He came out of his house,
- 19:39Speaker 3: and we followed him out the freeway to Hollywood. From there,
- 19:41Speaker 3: he drove out Sunset Boulevard to Whittier Drive in Beverly Hills,
- 19:44Speaker 3: and then he went out Wilshire Boulevard.
- 19:46Speaker 4: Toward West L.A. As we drove, we could hear.
- 19:48Speaker 3: The other units reporting the position of the men that
- 19:50Speaker 3: they were following.
- 19:51Speaker 4: All of the suspects left their homes.
- 19:53Speaker 3: At approximately the same time, and it looked as if
- 19:55Speaker 3: they would get to the plant within a couple of
- 19:56Speaker 3: minutes of the scheduled time. Scott had told us that
- 19:59Speaker 3: they would not meet at the plant, but they'd rendezvous
- 20:01Speaker 3: at a drive-in a couple of blocks from the plant. There,
- 20:03Speaker 3: they would be given their instructions.
- 20:06Speaker 4: 2.16 a.m., the five cars pulled into the drive-in, and
- 20:08Speaker 4: after a brief conversation, they all left and drove toward
- 20:10Speaker 4: the plant. 2.23 a.m., all the police.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Units got into their positions as arranged. Frank and I
- 20:16Speaker 3: took up our positions, and we listened to the reports
- 20:17Speaker 3: coming in over the radio.
- 20:20Speaker 9: Unit 1-K-Y-8-0, Unit 1-K-Y-8-0, Rubles, come in. Unit 1-K-Y-8-0 to Rubles,
- 20:23Speaker 9: go ahead. I'm on the roof of the building directly
- 20:29Speaker 9: across the street from the factory, Joe. I can see
- 20:31Speaker 9: the suspects now.
- 20:32Speaker 3: How many of them are there?
- 20:35Speaker 4: I can see three. I think there's a couple more
- 20:37Speaker 4: at the corner as lookouts. Hey, Donovan's down the block.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Maybe he can see the others. Unit 1K, Wyatt, over
- 20:42Speaker 4: to Donovan. Come in, please. Over. Yeah, there's one of
- 20:46Speaker 4: them on the corner down here. He drove up and
- 20:47Speaker 4: got out to take a look at the motor of
- 20:48Speaker 4: his car. He's over there working on it now. This Ruble's,
- 20:52Speaker 4: I can see another one at the other corner. He's
- 20:54Speaker 4: changing his tire. He's got the jack under the car,
- 20:57Speaker 4: but he's not trying to get the wheel off. The
- 20:59Speaker 4: others are at the factory door now. Do you see
- 21:02Speaker 4: anything where you are, Joe? Not much. Shadows across the street.
- 21:05Speaker 4: I can't see the doorway. What are they doing now?
- 21:08Speaker 4: They're inside now. They forced the lock on the door
- 21:11Speaker 4: and got inside. The door's closed. I can't see him anymore, Joe.
- 21:15Speaker 3: All units, this is Friday in unit 1KY80. All units,
- 21:18Speaker 3: move in to apprehend suspects. Repeat, move in to apprehend suspects.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Units 2R4, 5, 6, and 7. And unit 2R20, move
- 21:26Speaker 3: to blockade position.
- 21:27Speaker 4: All right, let's go. All right. We got the place
- 21:31Speaker 4: covered in back, okay? Yeah, all covered. All right. This
- 21:34Speaker 4: ought to do it, huh? Right. All right. All right,
- 21:45Speaker 4: let's go. Yeah. Well, I have to look out. Yeah,
- 21:54Speaker 4: I see. Well, let's take it easy, huh? See him? No.
- 22:04Speaker 4: The light back there looks like the office. Wait a minute. Yeah.
- 22:10Speaker 3: All of them must be back there. Sounds like they're
- 22:11Speaker 3: putting the blind to the back of the safe, doesn't it?
- 22:13Speaker 4: Yeah. Hello, boss. Hi, how's it going? They're in the
- 22:19Speaker 4: office now. You want to move in from that side? Right.
- 22:25Speaker 4: All right, let's go. All right. Come on, get on.
- 22:31Speaker 4: We haven't got all night. That thing's still like a sardine.
- 22:34Speaker 4: We're doing the best we can. We've got to pretend
- 22:37Speaker 4: our father's giving us trouble. Yeah, let me take a look.
- 22:39Speaker 4: All right, hold it right where you are. Let's get
- 22:42Speaker 4: out of here. Watch it, Joe. Watch it. I'll get him. Right.
- 22:45Speaker 4: Come on, Ramsey. You've got a place to go. The
- 22:47Speaker 4: building's surrounded. Back in you go. Get out of here, cop.
- 22:53Speaker 4: You're never going to take us. Pull it up. Don't
- 22:56Speaker 4: shoot anymore. I give up. I give up. Come on, cop.
- 22:58Speaker 4: Come on and get him. He ain't talking for me.
- 23:00Speaker 4: I've had it. I don't want any more shooting. I
- 23:02Speaker 4: give up. I'll throw your guns out of here. It's fine.
- 23:05Speaker 4: All right. Come on out here. Get over there.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Get your hands back in your head.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Stand right there and don't move. I gave up, didn't I?
- 23:11Speaker 4: I didn't want any more of it. Come on, Ramsey.
- 23:12Speaker 4: Your partner was smart. Why don't you play it that way, too?
- 23:14Speaker 4: You can't accept me, cop.
- 23:15Speaker 2: All right.
- 23:18Speaker 4: You win. I'm out of gel. Don't shoot. Throw that
- 23:20Speaker 4: gun out here. All right. Now come on out here.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Keep your hands back in your head. Come on.
- 23:25Speaker 3: Move.
- 23:26Speaker 4: That's good. Right there. All right. All right. Come on, Ramsey.
- 23:29Speaker 4: Over there next to your partner. Stand still, both of you.
- 23:33Speaker 4: Put your hands against the wall. Stand still. Don't move.
- 23:36Speaker 4: All right, they're clean, Joe. All right. There were three
- 23:43Speaker 4: of them. Where's the other one? I made a break
- 23:44Speaker 4: for the front door. They got him out there. Lousy
- 23:46Speaker 4: luck all the way around. How'd you know? Who told you?
- 23:48Speaker 4: That doesn't make any difference. Well, somebody had to tell you.
- 23:50Speaker 4: You'd never have found out if somebody had told you. Yeah,
- 23:52Speaker 4: that's right. Come on, let's go now. Well, who told you?
- 23:54Speaker 4: Who turned fake? Somebody had to tell you, didn't they? Well,
- 23:56Speaker 4: don't you worry about it, mister. What do you mean?
- 23:57Speaker 4: You're going to have a lot of time to figure
- 23:59Speaker 4: it out. Now, let's go.
- 24:07Speaker 3: The story you've just heard was true. The names were
- 24:10Speaker 3: changed to protect the innocent.
- 24:12Speaker 5: On January 14th, trial was held in Department 89, Superior
- 24:15Speaker 5: Court of the State of California, in and for the
- 24:18Speaker 5: County of Los Angeles.
- 24:19Speaker 4: In a moment, the results of that trial. The End.
- 24:29Speaker 5: Howard Allen Ramsey, Jack Irwin MacArthur, and the other two
- 24:31Speaker 5: suspects were tried and convicted of 15 counts of burglary

- 24:41Speaker 5: the state penitentiary for a period of not less than

- 24:47Speaker 5: given a lighter sentence and at the.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Conclusion of his prison term was placed on probation for
- 24:52Speaker 4: a period of two years.
