- 0:15Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double podcast episode 39.
- 0:20I realized I never introduced myself.
- 0:22So I am your host or one of three Co hosts Ryan and I'm
- 0:27joined by We'll go with Dean who is 10K up the road as I found
- 0:33out earlier when I cycled to your house and recorded it on my
- 0:36GPS watch. How are you doing?
- 0:39Good mate, that's it. No, good to see you again, doing
- 0:42well. Yeah, we were actually.
- 0:45This came to my mind earlier with some of the cycling chat
- 0:49that we've been doing. We get we're getting strangely
- 0:52positive feedback, but I don't want to be deluded by it.
- 0:56So I'll put up a poll on the Instagram this week, like
- 1:00whether people want to hear it or not, because I really don't
- 1:03want to project cycling crap onto runners ears if they're
- 1:07genuinely not interested. So it's a democracy.
- 1:10We'll go with the the majority on the votes because that's what
- 1:16we're doing in your garage. If you if you put gummy bear on
- 1:21the on the pole as well. We'll see if because we haven't
- 1:23heard heard about it's it their whereabouts in recent times.
- 1:28We need to see if the people still want to hear about the
- 1:30cat. Well, the latest updates is he's
- 1:37he'll be being minded by my boss, like boss's boss to to up
- 1:43the hierarchy from me in the week as when I go on a trip down
- 1:47to Margaret River. So it'll be going on his
- 1:49holidays as well. Best behavior then.
- 1:54Yeah, hopefully needs to behave himself.
- 1:58How? How did you get your boss's boss
- 2:00to mind your car? Well, it was one of them, you
- 2:04know, like kind of subtly bringing pets up and figuring
- 2:08out who's into dogs, who's into cats and whatever.
- 2:10Just like in a communal space in the office where there's like 5
- 2:14or 6 people going to be engaged without directly asking any
- 2:18questions. And then the CFO is the one who
- 2:22loves cats. So then it was a quite a
- 2:25difficult transition from discovering she likes cats to
- 2:29discover to finding out whether she wanted to mind my cat.
- 2:37Well, here you are anyway. Welcome, Owen.
- 2:39How are you doing there? Sunday morning just.
- 2:43Sunday morning, yeah, good. Had a nice line this morning and
- 2:47yeah, things going well. Currently in well my car broke
- 2:52before I went to Spain, so I'm now sort of dealing with that,
- 2:56whether to buy a nice car or just buy another sort of shit
- 3:02car to get me by and just tossing up the finances.
- 3:06But no, running wise I'm going good.
- 3:08Do you have to weigh that up against the tread a new
- 3:11treadmill as well or? Yeah, I think it treadmills at
- 3:15the window for now. I think I'm there's a better
- 3:18chance of me getting like just a gym membership for a couple of
- 3:20months. So yeah, the treadmill dream has
- 3:24been put on hold until until next year.
- 3:27Then you need your car to get to the gym.
- 3:30Yeah, the car I need care to get to work as well, like the car is
- 3:33more important. I'm like the kind of treadmill
- 3:36cost similar. So it's one or the other.
- 3:38Yes, some things in life are bigger than running.
- 3:41Yeah, yeah. What?
- 3:45You'd think that you're still in sunny Spain by the camera there,
- 3:49the sun's beaming off your face. The sun has come out to say hi.
- 3:52Yeah, because with the amount of rain, well, some mountain of
- 3:56rain fell over the last couple of days.
- 4:00All the roads are flooded. Actually went over on yesterday
- 4:02and got so far and I actually had to turn around.
- 4:06The road was completely flooded. Normally you can get by on like
- 4:08the banks, but no, completely flooded.
- 4:10So I'm like how it's going to make, it's going to make for a
- 4:14very, very mocky cross country next Sunday, which is, which is
- 4:19fun. But yeah, the sun is shining
- 4:21here now. That'll be what you want there.
- 4:24You want the adverse conditions, don't you?
- 4:26Like if you're a horse you'd want it is a heavy or something.
- 4:31Yeah, I'd probably want it a little bit heavier seeing that
- 4:34it's like on a pancake flat course and we just need to slow
- 4:38down them 13 low 5K guys. Well, looking forward to getting
- 4:46into that a bit later on. You just saying off air that
- 4:49there's a there's a big soccer or football game coming up for
- 4:53Ireland this afternoon and your pursuit of World Cup
- 4:55qualification. Yeah, so normally Ireland, we're
- 5:00pretty weak at soccer. I think since the early 2000s
- 5:03we've been pretty shit and I think it was 2012 we got to the
- 5:08EUR unlike it was incredible. I think we end up getting to the
- 5:11quarterfinal. We lost France to one, but we
- 5:15actually went one nil up. And he's on the Henry Humble.
- 5:18No, no, no, don't talk about that one.
- 5:20That was before. But yeah, we'd a handy enough
- 5:24group this, this to qualify for the World Cup.
- 5:26And like we've had, we had a handy enough group of like
- 5:28Armenia, Ireland, Hungary and Portugal.
- 5:32So obviously Portugal, you'd finish first, we'll finish
- 5:34first, but you'd fancy yourself to get like second butcher.
- 5:37Ireland being Ireland, didn't they lose?
- 5:41They lost Armenia and like the first or second game, which is
- 5:45like a must win game. And Armenia are ranked like
- 5:49109th. They're really, really like shit
- 5:52basically. And both we actually bet
- 5:55Portugal there during the week. So we're playing hungry now at
- 5:582:00 today and it's a must win game.
- 6:01If we win it, we'll get into some playoffs sort of thing to
- 6:04maybe qualify. So yeah, we have to.
- 6:07We have to win. Seen that results against
- 6:10Portugal the the big man got sent off, didn't he?
- 6:14It was so funny. Yeah, he elbowed when the Irish
- 6:17center backs and then then he started doing like the crying,
- 6:22the cry, like pretending he was crying and pointing at the Irish
- 6:25guy. And then he actually got sent
- 6:26off and the Irish fans went mad. But like we actually put them
- 6:31well button to nail which is pretty good.
- 6:34That's Cristiano Ronaldo, by the way, for those who went went
- 6:37away. Yeah, he's not well liked in
- 6:41Ireland now tell you that much. He's an easy man to dislike and
- 6:46to jeer. Yeah, but he's good at soccer.
- 6:52As I'm sure you've probably gathered by now, there's not
- 6:55actually all that much running to talk this week.
- 7:00So what we do have on the agenda is there's Victoria Milers in
- 7:04the week and Seth O'Donnell was doing some crazy things there.
- 7:08So we'll talk about that. And then next weekend we've got
- 7:11the cross country season. So the selection trials for
- 7:16world cross country are happening in Australia, the
- 7:19national cross country is happening in Ireland, and the
- 7:22selection trials for the European cross country for Team
- 7:26GB is happening in Liverpool as well.
- 7:28So we're going to talk a little bit about those.
- 7:31Fred Kelly, one of the American sprinters, has been thrown his
- 7:35name into the headlines with some controversial things this
- 7:38week. So we'll talk about that.
- 7:40And besides that, we'll see how we go.
- 7:43I guess Dean and I'll talk about our injury updates.
- 7:45And we've been reflecting this week that almost all of the
- 7:52people who podcast, who we seem to be aware of seems to be
- 7:56getting some bad luck, ourselves included.
- 7:59Like if you think of it, Owen, when maybe when we first
- 8:02started, you had a bit of an an injury pretty soon into it,
- 8:05didn't you? Yeah, yeah.
- 8:07Since then, Dean and I, unfortunately, and then the
- 8:12Brady and croaks are out or in and out.
- 8:17Fraser and Andy from For the Kudos have now taken a knock.
- 8:23So maybe the the podcast industry's cursed and it's just
- 8:28sticks to run. I think everyone just pushes
- 8:33because we're so immersed in it. We just pushed like too hard.
- 8:37I don't know, Like it's all we think about, so.
- 8:41It's funny, even I was getting told off by Becky yesterday
- 8:44because we went for, we done like 100K in the morning on the
- 8:48bike. And then when we came back, I
- 8:51tried like my first little run walk thing and then after later
- 8:56on I went to the gym and done my strength and she's like, Are you
- 8:59sure like 3 sessions in one day? Like you don't want to be going
- 9:03backwards again. And then this afternoon when I
- 9:06was like going up to Dean's to do these things on the Wahoo,
- 9:09she's like, are you getting yourself in a hole again with
- 9:13you? Remember, you heal like just
- 9:14because you've been able to run a little bit yesterday.
- 9:18But I think that's good as well. It's sort of like a word of
- 9:20reason because eighteens like that for me, like when I'm
- 9:23coming back from injury or like if I was like, Oh yeah, I'm just
- 9:26going to wait for a 30 minute jog.
- 9:28Like in your head it's nothing, but it's still something.
- 9:31So it's sort of good to have that.
- 9:33Like it's like the Angel on your shoulder, like you are the
- 9:36devil. But like they're like the Angel
- 9:39and they're just like, just remember, just pull it back a
- 9:42little bit. It's just like a word of reason.
- 9:46Cop those same noises you just the piece sort of just filter
- 9:49out is like white noise. You know I.
- 9:52Was going to say but realistically are you actually
- 9:54listening though I. Mean I say I am.
- 9:59The evidence says otherwise. My strada would say otherwise,
- 10:04but I'm still waiting for my first kudos from hell so they
- 10:07doesn't pay attention. Hard to please.
- 10:14Let's talk about the results that we do have then.
- 10:17I don't know if you've seen this.
- 10:18So Victoria Milers happened on maybe Thursday night and Seth
- 10:23ran, Seth O'Donnell ran both the B and the A race in the 3000
- 10:29meters. So I think when I looked at it
- 10:31from finishing his B race, which he won in, jeez, don't want to
- 10:37get this wrong now. I think it was a 15.
- 10:39There was then 15, a 15 minute gap and he was on the start line
- 10:43for the start of the A race, which he won in 755.
- 10:48And like, that's pretty probably pretty easy for him really.
- 10:51Because what remember in the summer in Europe when he was in
- 10:55the race with Almgren, he ran things like 737 or something,
- 11:00but still. It's not bad.
- 11:04He's got to be the best Victoria Milos racer going around,
- 11:08surely? His bib as well.
- 11:11He had his number was like handwritten on.
- 11:17I think he's doing he's that well, we'll get to it.
- 11:19He's on the start list for cross country next weekend as well,
- 11:22which is cool. So and to be fair, enjoying some
- 11:26of the content that he puts up. I don't know if he's stepped
- 11:29over to YouTube but he certainly had them that way with like his
- 11:31rails and stuff on Instagram documenting his almost crazy
- 11:36scientists theories trying the most.
- 11:41Yeah, not afraid to say. He does have YouTube, doesn't
- 11:45he? Hello.
- 11:47I think he posted he was posting when he was doing in Europe and
- 11:51it was funny because he was on the plane.
- 11:53What, like his? Yeah, of course his.
- 11:58Yeah, of course he's done the said Sydney people are wankers
- 12:02and we commented on it. The podcast doesn't align with
- 12:07that. We just highlighted it.
- 12:12We welcome listeners from all cities and all remote towns.
- 12:16Yeah, no, he's gone quiet. Two months was his last, 1-2
- 12:19months ago. Not like us.
- 12:22We're here week in, week out, preventing the content.
- 12:25That's it. Let's go to the Australian cross
- 12:32country then and have a look at these start lists.
- 12:35Because they came out in the week, didn't we?
- 12:37Didn't they rather. And I sent them through and I
- 12:42don't know about use, but I was pretty impressed with some of
- 12:45the depth there. And there's a few interest in
- 12:48like kind of crossovers from track runners and distance
- 12:51runners. Just looking at the women's
- 12:54start list, friend of the show Rachel McGinnis is listed down
- 12:59on there. So that'd be cool to see her
- 13:03hopefully go well there. Jayla Hancock, Cameron Bronte
- 13:07Oates, Bianca Pasquale, Georgia Hansen or other standout names.
- 13:18But I think the men's is probably a little bit deeper
- 13:20than that. But that's that's good and
- 13:23interesting because it provides an opportunity for some of those
- 13:26girls who've maybe always been like on the cusp of getting a
- 13:29national bib and representing Australia on the global stage.
- 13:33Because looking at that, there is a real opportunity there.
- 13:37I'm sure when I looked the other day that Leanne Pompiani was
- 13:40listed there. Now she doesn't seem to be
- 13:42coming up. So whether they've updated that
- 13:46or I was just saying things, that's strange.
- 13:52Anyway, for the for the men then this is where I noticed some of
- 13:56the crossovers from track to distance because I seen Cam
- 14:02Myers was a standout name obviously jumps off the page
- 14:06right there. Why is Cam Myers not even on
- 14:10there now? Did you look at these lists the
- 14:12other day and did you see Cam Myers on there?
- 14:15I seen Cam Myers because I got excited to see how you'd run.
- 14:19So what is the why am I looking at a complete different list
- 14:22now? Because Morgan McDonald was on
- 14:25there as well, and he's not on this one.
- 14:28Very confused schedule start lists men's So you've set.
- 14:38You have your man. Josh Phillips, Liam Boudin, Matt
- 14:43Clark, Tim Vincent, Warren McDonald, Tom Dicano, Half 2.
- 14:47Jimmy Whelan, Matt Buckle, Cam Myers, Isaac Kane, Ed Marks,
- 14:53Connor LA Tooth, Ben Buckingham, Andre Waring, Zach for Joni.
- 14:58Dave McNeil, Ed Trippus. It's stacked.
- 15:02What the hell is the list I'm looking at then?
- 15:04Because none of them are on it. I don't know.
- 15:08The women's one I've just read out is probably completely
- 15:11wrong. I'll get the women's one as well
- 15:13here. So Leon Pampiani's on it.
- 15:17Sarah Klein. Not real.
- 15:20These are only the people I who I've heard of Caitlin Adams and
- 15:24Bronte Oates more Marty Skyring Jenny Blondel so just 21 down
- 15:32for the women and then 4041 for the men.
- 15:39I'm looking at the start list for the Australian Cross Country
- 15:42Championships in Ballarat in August last year.
- 15:48In Spain. Oh geez, well thanks for helping
- 15:58me out there. But yeah, that is so stacked.
- 16:02And I think Stromlo, that's like a man made like country, cross
- 16:05country course, it's like built for cross country, isn't it?
- 16:10Yeah, yeah, looks beautiful. I've not run it.
- 16:13I've ran cross country Nationals back in 2004.
- 16:17I think it was in Canberra, but I don't think it was there.
- 16:23Have you seen the coverage of the of that in the past when
- 16:28when it's been at nationals? No.
- 16:31It's beautiful. Looks very nice, like, you know,
- 16:34well, cut some hills, but not too hilly.
- 16:39But yeah, a little bit like, yeah, not how you would like it.
- 16:43You wouldn't probably call it cross country.
- 16:45It looks like how some of those American cross country races are
- 16:49when they're all like golf courses.
- 16:52Kind of like, is it rolling hills like that?
- 16:55Like just constant little zaps of your legs and then get
- 16:58rolling off them and thrown into another one.
- 17:01Yeah, there was a did I have, Was it when when we hosted cross
- 17:09country world champs in Bathurst?
- 17:13Was the selection race perhaps, Was that at Stromlo?
- 17:17Perhaps? I think, and I remember in the
- 17:21men's race, Rams and went off the front and he ended up
- 17:23getting caught by I think Jack Rayner maybe in the end.
- 17:31But yeah, I don't know. It was good racing.
- 17:33It, I don't know, seems to produce good, good racing.
- 17:39Like because of the hills it breaks it up, but it's very good
- 17:42on the R. Like Cam Myers would know that
- 17:45course like the back of his hand, he'd know it so, so well.
- 17:49Like no one to go went to take it easy.
- 17:51So yeah, it's going to be so good.
- 17:55It's interesting that he's put himself in the main open 10K
- 17:59race because there's obviously the mixed relay team where the
- 18:02only run. Is it like a 2K or something?
- 18:06Yeah. And you obviously he, you would
- 18:08have thought he'd be more suited to that.
- 18:10But he clearly fancies himself making the team and I don't
- 18:13blame him. I think there's six spots, so
- 18:16I'm sure even if he doesn't bloody like win the race, he'll
- 18:19get in into the team of 6. Yeah, I'd say this is a free
- 18:23hit. Be a tricky choice because I
- 18:25think you're like in terms of a world cross country medal, like
- 18:31you're at far greater odds in the mixed relo.
- 18:36But if Jess hollers on the team. But I think, yeah, that a lot of
- 18:41the prestige right is in the the open race top 20, you would
- 18:47hope. So prediction then, do you think
- 18:51Cam Myers or Morgan McDonald finishes higher?
- 18:54Like that's the ultimate crossover isn't it?
- 18:56Because Morgan McDonald's like a true distance guy.
- 19:01Wait, who do you think wins that?
- 19:04Then I'll say them name, say the names again.
- 19:06So you've got Seth O'Donnell, you've got Josh Phillips, Liam
- 19:13Boudin, Tim Vincent, Morgan McDonald, Tom Dicano, Have to
- 19:19Jimmy Whelan and Cam Myers, Isaac Kane, Ed Marks, Zac
- 19:26Faggione. They're like, they're probably
- 19:30the main ones. It's so hard to pick.
- 19:33Cheers, who you going with I'd. Probably go set.
- 19:39You know, I think Seth he's got the speed, he's got the stamina
- 19:43and I'd say he just loves cross country as well.
- 19:45So got. That dog in him for the cross
- 19:47country. Then you've got half two as well
- 19:49who's just an absolute like I go set or have to.
- 19:56You'd think Seth will be like doing rain dances.
- 19:58He wants it as as ugly as you. Yeah.
- 20:03But Seth is born at 2001. I did not think he was that
- 20:10young. I think he and have to used to
- 20:15do the Victoria Xer scene as well, so they'll be well used to
- 20:20slogging it out in mad conditions with these lots.
- 20:27Well, I'd be tempted to go have to with his form then.
- 20:32McDonald's a bit of a wild card because you don't know what sort
- 20:35of shape he's going to be in with his change to the new to
- 20:38the new training and stuff. But you'd imagine if he's coming
- 20:41all the way from the US, he's obviously going to be pretty
- 20:45confident that it's going to be justified.
- 20:51I'll stick with half 2. Yeah, I'll go set.
- 20:55No, you have to go somewhere else.
- 20:59Once you for picking last used to always sitting on the fence.
- 21:04I think after is probably the favorite, right?
- 21:06He won the didn't he win the Melbourne half recently?
- 21:10He's run a minute quicker than like I was thinking maybe Jimmy
- 21:13Whelan as a ruffie, but he's have to run a minute quicker
- 21:17marigami than what Jimmy Whelan ran at Valencia.
- 21:24And he's clearly very fit, ran very well at Sydney.
- 21:28Marathons are clearly very strong.
- 21:30Yeah, but that's irrelevant. That's that.
- 21:32Like this is on grass over hills, pancake flower.
- 21:38Yeah, but he ran well at Sydney, which was over hills.
- 21:43Half 2 is about 50 KS. You're going to float over it.
- 21:47You think, yeah, probably. Actually you have to go half 2.
- 21:53Think so. I think he would be the one if
- 21:55you were to pick one. Pat Tiernan as a ruffy.
- 21:58I don't think. He's on there.
- 22:00No. Oh, he's not on the list, Susie,
- 22:06have to go, have to have to like you said on have to assess,
- 22:09right. No takers for calm then.
- 22:13All right, I'll go Cam. Tim Tim Vincent ran that point
- 22:17to Pinnacle, so he's conditioned over hills.
- 22:20Well, I only ran the the Perth half, So what a what a better
- 22:23leading. That's the the all the great in
- 22:27the world. Yeah.
- 22:30Did you see that Perth Marathon Running Festival reopened its
- 22:36entries for next year but on their Instagram?
- 22:40So the the most recent post is like the entry is open or sold
- 22:45out and then the one prior is something about entries from
- 22:48this year's race. But we still don't know who run
- 22:51who won this year's race as per their Instagram and the selling
- 22:55entries of next year. They didn't post the winners.
- 23:00No, I did. I commented off my personal as
- 23:03well saying like on on this one, saying that they released the
- 23:07entries saying you received some feedback from WA running pod and
- 23:13from easy double that might be like useful that any plans to
- 23:16acknowledge it and it got blanked.
- 23:18But they replied to another comment who said like what time
- 23:22do the entries open or something.
- 23:25That goes to show just what a boom running's in.
- 23:29Yeah, they don't need the feedback.
- 23:32Who are we saying for the women's race?
- 23:33I guess Leanne's stand out, you reckon?
- 23:36Let. Me just get these ones back off.
- 23:41So how it works is the six people that will be on the team,
- 23:45but the top 4, this is when it comes to the actual world cross
- 23:48country race, which is what this is the selection race for.
- 23:53So there'll be six women, six men, six women representing
- 23:57Australia, representing Ireland, representing Team GB.
- 24:00Well, hopefully if GB fill the spots and the 1st 4, the highest
- 24:064 finishes of those six will count towards a cumulative team
- 24:09score. So although you may be selected
- 24:14to make the team, you might not actually score for the team.
- 24:18So that would be an unfortunate position to be in rarely, but I
- 24:22mean, still you've got the best so.
- 24:27Is there anyone like Big missing from the women's race or is that
- 24:31all Australia have? Well, is he going to Valencia?
- 24:35Isn't she? And so is Jess Stenson.
- 24:43And Jen Gregson. And Jen Gregson.
- 24:49Yeah, to be honest, I can't look past Leon here.
- 24:53I know your mom Maudie Sky rings fit, but like, not Leon Poppiani
- 24:57fit. So I'd probably go Leon 1,
- 24:59Maudie 2 and then between Caitlin Adams and Bronte Oates
- 25:03for 3rd. Yeah.
- 25:06I tend to agree with you on what you've said there.
- 25:09And to be honest with you, I think the women's race might be
- 25:12a bit easier to kind of see through those results.
- 25:15But we shall see. Anything can happen on the cross
- 25:18country I guess. I think it's again, it's a bit
- 25:21crazy like me for my cross country, I just have to like
- 25:24drive like 3 hours up north. Whereas like I don't think
- 25:29there's anyone from Perth down to run in the men's race because
- 25:34you'd have to pay like couple £100 for flights over to the
- 25:37other side of Australia. Which sort of put things into
- 25:40perspective of how lucky we are to live in a small island rather
- 25:45than Australia, which is absolutely ginormous.
- 25:51Yeah, it is a bit annoying because I remember looking and I
- 25:54don't even think you can fly direct from but that's more
- 25:58Perth's fault than cameras fault I think because Perth isn't the
- 26:04most well connected like that. Like do it.
- 26:07Was it the bluff to boat ramp you'd done that race last year?
- 26:09I've seen they were like putting entries out and stuff the other
- 26:13day. So the quick look and you have
- 26:16to fly through Melbourne or whatever.
- 26:18You done that, didn't you? Yeah, you have to get a layover
- 26:22in Melbourne and then Melbourne to Tasmania, which, yeah, it's
- 26:26just super expensive to get around for like a race that you
- 26:29might even, well, you're highly unlikely to win.
- 26:32Like it's just dead, like you're in a loss from the off.
- 26:35Even though do you get money for winning this race?
- 26:36Because, you know, I don't need to get money for the Irish
- 26:39nationals. I wouldn't say so because it's
- 26:43like a specific selection race. Like it's not even just
- 26:46nationals. Yeah.
- 26:49So it'd be hard to justify, like I would have loved to do cross
- 26:53country when I was in Australia last year, but it's just hard to
- 26:59justify the cost to fly. I think that year was in
- 27:03Tasmania. I like to fly to Tasmania, yeah.
- 27:10Just on Perth though, saying a few things that you know, in
- 27:13terms of the downside, did you hear the Coffee Club podcast
- 27:17this week and Ollie Hall's mention of places, places he'd
- 27:23like to live? Yeah, I heard that he gave Perth
- 27:27a big a big hype up, didn't he? He did.
- 27:31I was. I was pretty shocked.
- 27:34But NASA is quite nice is very complimentary so human is that
- 27:38his teammate Carl Robinson who both where's car from maybe
- 27:42Queensland and. Brisbane, yeah.
- 27:45Yeah. And all this from Sydney, I
- 27:47think. Is that right?
- 27:49Yeah, but like, I feel like part is so underrated and I don't
- 27:53know why no one writes it. I think it must be because it's
- 27:56so far away from everything. It's like one of the most
- 27:58isolated cities in the world because it's got lovely parks,
- 28:01it's got lovely weather, it's got lovely beaches and it's like
- 28:05literally all you want and a place to live.
- 28:09Yeah, good coffee. It used to have affordable
- 28:12housing. Well, that's only heading in One
- 28:13Direction. And they did caution about the
- 28:16with the FIFO workers, didn't they?
- 28:19They made a mention of. I think they might have actually
- 28:22mentioned British FIFO workers. What you say?
- 28:29He was saying that they were slagging off British FIFA
- 28:32workers. I said no, it was the Irish.
- 28:34No, it's definitely British and we are definitely different.
- 28:38Two different things. Irish are not British.
- 28:42I had something to say on the back of that and it's just
- 28:44slipped out my mind. But you were telling me about
- 28:46this earlier that he's, he's speaking from experience as
- 28:50well, isn't he? Because he was here for
- 28:52nationals this year and I could see, to be fair, how well I get
- 28:57the feeling from listening to him on the coffee club.
- 29:00He seems like a pretty chill and laid back guy so he would blend
- 29:04right into the lifestyle here. Yeah, I think he was picking up
- 29:08on some of the nice parts. I mean the podcast called Coffee
- 29:11Club. So commenting on good coffee,
- 29:14good beaches, good vibes, decent places to run.
- 29:16So can't agree with a lot of that, albeit that been some nice
- 29:22places to ride as well. It's just the sharks are the big
- 29:26downside, the things that can kill you, yeah.
- 29:32Be unlucky though. Would you be an ocean swim at
- 29:36the end or is she not really bother?
- 29:40No, I'm a little bit scared of sharks, to be truthful.
- 29:43But I mean, I think it's a fairly irrational fear.
- 29:46Like, it's not very likely, but I'm also not great in the pool.
- 29:50I gave up triathlon because Hal's beat me in one too many
- 29:53swim sessions and I spat the chewy and went back to running.
- 29:55So. Yeah, it's not very likely, but
- 29:59the fact that there is a chance at all kind of justifies your
- 30:02fear, I think. Yeah, I've done a few summers of
- 30:05tries, and as soon as you jump in the water, that Jaws music
- 30:08starts playing in your head for the first few minutes until you
- 30:11chill out. I think it's just the kind of
- 30:15like perception or like the because lots of people are quite
- 30:19chill about it and I reckon it's just because the surfers and
- 30:22stuff are just kind of like tapped.
- 30:24Like they just literally don't care, do they?
- 30:27Therefore, that rubs off onto some people who will like swim
- 30:30and stuff and they'll see, oh, the surfers are there so it's
- 30:33fine. But then you see there's this
- 30:35account on Instagram and he flies his drone up and down the
- 30:39metro beaches constantly and the amount of sharks that he gets
- 30:43like ridiculous footage of genuinely within 10 meters of
- 30:48the shoreline. Like some of the videos you can
- 30:50see people stored on the water's edge and the dogs like 5 meters
- 30:54deep paddling and five meters further out is a bloody tiger
- 30:58shark or a great white, whatever it may be.
- 31:00And probably following that account is the best thing I've
- 31:05done from my own safety perspective because it makes me
- 31:08think twice about going deeper than my knees.
- 31:11But the worst thing that I've done from enjoying the beach
- 31:14perspective because now I just sit there Bacon.
- 31:18But I feel like Aussies don't really use just all so laid back
- 31:22and chill like when the big storms come and hit the coasts,
- 31:25like that's when all the surfers go out and surf because the
- 31:29waves are massive when like any other person would be like, no,
- 31:33that looks a bit dangerous. The waves are like ginormous.
- 31:37We'll, we'll stay out of this. You'll be right mate.
- 31:43There was a guy on the news down Margaret River like last weekend
- 31:46I think it was then if you seen it then.
- 31:48The wind, the windsurfer, yeah, yeah, he's like just fucking
- 31:52came up and grabbed me and I was wrestling with it on my on my
- 31:56sail. He's got this huge bite mark out
- 31:59of the side of his of his board. Literally about 20% of the
- 32:03board, Sean. But somehow I'm not a scratch on
- 32:07him. He's very lucky.
- 32:10He he must have been like a bit dazed or something when he's
- 32:12doing that interview because he's just like walking back to
- 32:15his car with his board on his shoulder, like happy days.
- 32:20Well, and I think he must have just been because it's one of
- 32:23those you're standing on it with A and it's got that sail and
- 32:26the, the board, you know. So he's just getting pushed
- 32:28along and it's obvious it must have.
- 32:30It's just come up and whacked, worked in this footage.
- 32:32Have you seen the footage of it? It's just on a lot.
- 32:38It's just like flapping about on top and the sharks obviously
- 32:41underneath and it's all all happening and yeah.
- 32:45He's pointing at the the bite mark and saying like, if my foot
- 32:49hadn't been there then it would have been taken off.
- 32:51And I'm like, well, yeah, no shit, Maze.
- 32:55It's a massive bite, isn't it? It's massive, yeah.
- 33:00I I don't know if we've spoken about this before, but you have
- 33:02do you ever is it, is it dorsal reports on Facebook?
- 33:07You get your own local ones. So they do like WA Sydney rah
- 33:11rah rah and it gives you, it notifies you whenever there's a
- 33:14shark sighting and you, it's all the time.
- 33:20It's. More regular than you'd you'd
- 33:22realise that it sort of keeps me on the land.
- 33:27Yeah, when I was in America, they had that, but it was for
- 33:30like guns. So like when I was in New York,
- 33:33I was just like, you're very off just not having the app because
- 33:35it actually sent you into a mad spiral.
- 33:39You wouldn't leave the house like when there's like gun
- 33:41attacks and all that sort of stuff.
- 33:43Shit. What would be the the one around
- 33:47Ireland in Dublin? What like sort of a let's would
- 33:50be going off just like gang related stuff?
- 33:53Not be like cattle out on the road or sheep out on the road.
- 33:55Watch out, there's actually a farmer around me that puts hives
- 33:59on a sheep because like they always just break out so on the
- 34:02road you see them. You should get a photo when you
- 34:05run in between them. You and your hive is them in
- 34:08this. Yeah, and bought what would be
- 34:11the big one? Random, I don't know.
- 34:12I'd say like knives or like drugs.
- 34:15I don't know, Like there's no guns over here.
- 34:18So if you see a gun, like, you're like, whoa, how did you
- 34:20get that? Yeah, so much going on over
- 34:24here. Yeah fair enough.
- 34:27I think similar for England. Lots of like knife crime and
- 34:31drugs related stuff as well. Pest not petty crime, but no
- 34:36sharks. No sharks or guns.
- 34:39Yeah. We're lucky that there's no
- 34:43Crocs though, could be worse. I remember when I got in the
- 34:49taxi first time I got to Broome and I was like dead excited
- 34:53asking the taxi driver about like sharks and stuff and he's
- 34:56like, ah don't worry mate, the Crocs take care of the sharks.
- 35:03When I was up in in Cairns, I went on a croc tour and they're
- 35:07like, yeah, you're better off just getting into no water
- 35:10because there's either sharks or crocodiles.
- 35:12Just just stay away. Just go to pills.
- 35:16It's so brutal because the beaches are beautiful, but
- 35:19they're just like. Or there's little jellyfish that
- 35:21can kill you within two hours. It's yeah, it's a bit nuts.
- 35:27We started off very well and thinking we might be able to get
- 35:30like Tourism WI on board or something here and gone to town
- 35:34on the dangers our backs are running.
- 35:39We digress. So I think only the top two from
- 35:45the selection trials are automatic spots.
- 35:48The rest are kind of discretionary based on, they've
- 35:51put loosely some standards out for which the remaining four
- 35:55places will be judged by, which is sub 29 for the men and sub
- 36:003230 for the women. And currently there are plenty
- 36:05of men and women occupying these spots.
- 36:09So yeah, it's going to be interesting to see how it plays
- 36:11out there. We mentioned how deep the fields
- 36:14are. They're all fighting fair,
- 36:15essentially. There's only two spots
- 36:17guaranteed. I'm sure the performances who
- 36:21finished third and 4th and stuff will be like highly regarded and
- 36:24strongly considered as well. But yeah, interesting weekend
- 36:28ahead. It's on Friday night as well,
- 36:30which I don't know it's it's good from us being miles away
- 36:37and just being able to tune into results on a Friday night.
- 36:39But it's probably not a great experience for those who are
- 36:42travelling and racing it, especially for like people who
- 36:46are going to be taking leave off work and stuff to do this race.
- 36:49So do you want to tell us about what you know about Irish
- 36:54National Cross? Yeah, so Ireland isn't as good
- 36:59as putting out like who's running in the races, but I'd
- 37:04have a fair idea. So Irish.
- 37:08So the Australian one is 10K, but for some reason Europe,
- 37:11European cross country has moved down to 7.5 K, which is just
- 37:15like, I don't really get it. It's not really cross country.
- 37:19Cross country seem to be a hard long slog.
- 37:21So yeah, 7.5 K is like just strange enough to drop down the
- 37:25distance, but so the Irish one is then going to be 7 1/2
- 37:30kilometers as well. So the big hitters in the mail
- 37:34race would be the likes of Nick Griggs to use a probably be
- 37:38fairly familiar with. He's got I think he's got the
- 37:40park run world record because Savage under 23 out late.
- 37:44You've got Callum Morgan, who's his training partner.
- 37:46I think Efraim Good day is running, running in it.
- 37:50Stephen Scullion is down to running in a no Murphy from
- 37:53Tillamores down to run. Michael Power is down to run.
- 37:57Brian Faye is down to run Dara Mcelhenny, 13O2 guys down to run
- 38:02John Travers, who was like Irish running royalty.
- 38:05He's down to run Cormac Dalton and Paul O'Donnell, Jack
- 38:09O'Leary, Pierre Merchant. They're sort of the the big
- 38:14names in the in the mail side. And like, I genuinely couldn't
- 38:20call who out of them will win it.
- 38:23Like to be honest, I'm sort of mad I'm actually running in it.
- 38:26I'd love to like be on the sideline and just watch it.
- 38:30Where about like would you be ranked you reckon off like A5
- 38:34KPB or something? Genie Mac Well, I think in
- 38:38Ireland this year I'm like 48 or something in the 5K, so I
- 38:45really, really haven't. If I probably top 30 would
- 38:49probably be a good result for me.
- 38:53Yeah, like this year over every like this year super, super
- 38:57stacked because of like the world cross country aspect of
- 38:59it. Like I feel like everyone just
- 39:01comes out and like it's in the world cross countries in
- 39:02Florida. It just be like a savage
- 39:04experience so that like everyone comes out for that sort of
- 39:08thing. And because like I bet you
- 39:09€1,000,000 like more McDonald, Morgan McDonald would not be
- 39:13running Australian cross country if there wasn't a Worlds this
- 39:16year. Now, did you say that Darren
- 39:21Mcelhenney as part of those? Stylist.
- 39:25He'd be one of the favorites, yeah.
- 39:30And to put you on the spot, but did you listen to that interview
- 39:33at all the his coach done with the Sunday plug cast?
- 39:37Yeah, it was super interesting that like he sort of he became
- 39:41blunt or something in a way, didn't he?
- 39:42And they had to do a lot of was a VLVLM or like a different type
- 39:47of training, just fairly basically slim self alactic.
- 39:52Yeah, pretty bold call from his coach to like, take because they
- 39:56don't like physiological testing in the lab with some like
- 40:00Belgian guy, didn't they? And found that his anaerobic
- 40:04stuff was like his anaerobic system had basically become
- 40:07blunted because they've been hammering threshold work that
- 40:10much that basically couldn't like reach those high gears.
- 40:14And he didn't have change of paces at the end of the race and
- 40:16stuff. And then they like completely
- 40:19gambled basically and switched the season off and done.
- 40:23Three months worth of like, well, I intended it essentially
- 40:26as VO2 Max work and just went really specific on that in the
- 40:31middle of the season, which is a massive risk.
- 40:33But it obviously paid off massively for him because was he
- 40:37missed the standard by like a second or something, didn't he?
- 40:40But he still went competed at World Champs.
- 40:43He ran like 13O2 and the standard was 13 O1, which is so
- 40:47stupid. Like 13 O1 is such a stupid
- 40:49number. But yeah, basically he he do
- 40:52like really hard reps with like lot of recovery and again, yeah,
- 40:57just to get his body used to running hard and producing
- 41:01lactic. Yeah, super interesting.
- 41:03We should probably, umm, tag it, tag that interview in in our
- 41:08story or something, because it was really, really good.
- 41:11Yeah, his coach seems like a really switched on guy and very
- 41:15approachable and nice as well, so I did really enjoy the chest.
- 41:20And it'd be super interesting to see how the Wheelers get on now.
- 41:23Like what? Who were they with before him?
- 41:27Yeah, not sure to be fair. So it'd be interesting to see if
- 41:30they like kick on because what age are they?
- 41:33Are they getting old or like would they be moving up to the
- 41:35marathon anytime soon? I.
- 41:38Think that's what they kind of said, didn't they?
- 41:39Eventually the goal with them would be to take them to the
- 41:43marathon. But I think he did say maybe
- 41:45focus on five and 10K for now. Still, they've still got a
- 41:49chance at that. Yeah, I suppose.
- 41:52Yeah. It was also one of the
- 41:54interesting points that he made was talking about like the
- 41:58dynamic of the set up across different like pro teams and
- 42:03well, different coaching groups in Irish athletics where he said
- 42:08like they all kind of come together to go to training camps
- 42:12and they almost operate like one of these pro teams, like on or
- 42:16like New Balance, but it's under like the Irish Afflecks banner.
- 42:22They have their own individual training groups, but then they
- 42:25merge to go on these training camps.
- 42:28Yeah. So Ireland has like this like
- 42:30distance squad, whereas if you run there's like 3 different
- 42:34levels. If you like, if you're super
- 42:36fast and like getting close to medals and all, you get all that
- 42:39for free. If you then there's another
- 42:42level below that where you get like some of the stuff paid for.
- 42:46And then there's a another level where I think it's 14.
- 42:49If you're on like 14 flat or just under 14, you have to, you
- 42:53can go on these camps, get access to them, but you have to
- 42:56fund all yourself. So and like there's certain
- 43:01coaches. So Emmett and Levy is a coach
- 43:03within that. Nick Riggs is a coach something
- 43:06Kirk, he's a coach within that. And they're basically just
- 43:09pushing that double threshold because it clearly works.
- 43:12Everyone underdog is doing it these days.
- 43:14So yeah, it's cool the way like they sort of merge and like
- 43:19they're all coming up against each other now on Sunday, but
- 43:22they would have trained together for like 3 or 4 weeks during the
- 43:26year, which is yes, it's cool. Is it always in the same
- 43:31location? As in the training camp.
- 43:36Sorry, the rates. No national changes every year,
- 43:42so the year the last two years have been up north.
- 43:46But let's say if you're Dara Mcelhenny, you're literally the
- 43:50other end of Ireland. So he's like a 6-7 hour drive up
- 43:54to Derry, which yeah, he'll be, even though he's based in Dublin
- 44:00I think. But yeah, it's just potluck.
- 44:03Like I'm pretty lucky I'm in the middle of Ireland, so anywhere
- 44:06is all right for me, boss. Yeah, if you're on either end.
- 44:13Pardon. As long as your car is working.
- 44:16Basically, yeah. So I'm going to head up on the
- 44:18Saturday early and just like, maybe like, jog when I'm up
- 44:21there and, yeah, I just get a feel for the place.
- 44:25On the female side, you have got Fenella Ross came.
- 44:31Oh, she went 227 in New York Marathon.
- 44:35Just there you've got Mary Mohair, Claire Fagan, Danielle
- 44:37Donegan, Amy Green, E Richardson, Neval and Chelfin.
- 44:44Mary Mcglenn, who came second in Dublin Marathon.
- 44:48Fiona Everard, Alish Flanagan, Jodie McCann, Rochin Flanagan,
- 44:54IMA Mar, So a few of them are pretty sure a few of them are in
- 44:58America, so they're coming home for it.
- 45:02But you couldn't really look past Fenola Ross.
- 45:07She is just like a level above a lot of them.
- 45:12Danielle Donegan, she's actually going out with our Michael
- 45:14Honey. She's really good as well.
- 45:15She ran that Cardiff cross, she came.
- 45:18If they're 7th, I want to say so she's fit and I'm Marie McGlynn.
- 45:23She could still have the marathon in her legs.
- 45:26But yeah, Jodie McCann actually done a stint in Australia when I
- 45:32was over there. She trained a little bit with
- 45:34them on Oceana. She's now a night girl, but her
- 45:38brother is also a pro runner with them on Europe, so it'd be
- 45:43interesting to see how. She goes.
- 45:44Over over the muck. But yeah, that's the Irish cross
- 45:49country. I I'm not sure if all of these
- 45:51are going to be running like this is just a little page I
- 45:53found. But yeah.
- 45:56So with Ireland, I think top five will top two or three
- 46:01definitely get on the team and then it goes to discretionary
- 46:06spots for the others. It's the selectors pick.
- 46:09So yeah, super exciting. And I'm not even sure if there's
- 46:12a stream either, so I'll have to look into that.
- 46:17Is it an afternoon? Race or a more than one?
- 46:20On mine is eh I. Think mine's like quarter past
- 46:26it. Starts at 12 like.
- 46:27Mine's the last race, mine's at 1450 and there is 123456789
- 46:34races minus the 10th race so. Yeah, highly likely that it
- 46:40will. Be an absolute mud bath so you
- 46:43don't. Have to stay over or anything
- 46:45you. Just like you said, you go up
- 46:46that morning and come back that evening.
- 46:49No, I'll go up then. Day before.
- 46:51And stated I wouldn't fancy like driving for three hours and then
- 46:54just trying to run a race. It's just you're better safe and
- 46:57sorry than just go up on the Saturday.
- 46:59Chill out. Maybe see?
- 47:01If you can get on the course, just jogger.
- 47:04But yeah, yeah, I always try. Even for like Valencia.
- 47:08I was Valencia 10K. Next year I was going to like do
- 47:11a business trip and literally fly on the Saturday and then
- 47:17race on the Sunday. But like my coach was like, the
- 47:20flight could still be in your legs.
- 47:21Like you're way better off just like going an extra day.
- 47:24So now I'm flying on the Friday. So I Saturday to like get used
- 47:27to everything and then Sunday race.
- 47:29You're better off giving yourself more time than less
- 47:32like. We thought that into America
- 47:36Army this year. Yeah, Ryan pulled.
- 47:39Another bag, huh? Like on send.
- 47:43On send into bakery into I don't know a.
- 47:49Few slices of sushi. Sashimi and then bang magic of
- 47:54the. Onsen, The Magic of the.
- 47:55Onsen, the actual place. My Barber, actually.
- 48:00Right. I was getting my hair.
- 48:01Cut and my barbers. Talk.
- 48:03He likes to talk shoes. He worked in a Nike store back
- 48:05in the day. And he's, he doesn't do any
- 48:09running at all, but quite trendy as barbers often are.
- 48:14And he's like talking about the vapour flies.
- 48:17And he's like, have you seen the ones with the red flames on the
- 48:19sides? And I'm like, yeah, I'm familiar
- 48:22with the red flames on the side. So I'd never been, you know,
- 48:25ballsy enough to own a pair myself.
- 48:27But I know a guy like everything you've done Ryan on the day.
- 48:32On the day before that race would like was stupid, yeah and.
- 48:37I meant to What is he? Doing yeah, it was so casual.
- 48:44We're about 35 strides in the morning, you know, bailing all
- 48:48of that got off the got off the train.
- 48:51Onto the the bus to the race site to go and do the bib
- 48:55collection like almost off the flight and you you prepare
- 48:59rolled on here we just made. That was the day before you that
- 49:03just. Shake out, done.
- 49:04And Oh yeah, that was weighing heavily on me having to go and
- 49:08do that shake out and it was pissing down and freezing.
- 49:11I was genuinely thinking, what am I doing here?
- 49:13Like, I've trained for months for this race and travelled all
- 49:17this way and I'm doing a shakeout at like 6:00 PM the
- 49:20night before and I'm freezing. I'm going to be ill tomorrow.
- 49:24But somehow worked out. All right, put that down.
- 49:29The British national, well, not national, the British cross
- 49:33country selection trials for Europeans in Liverpool next
- 49:37weekend. Exciting news here.
- 49:40I think we're going to have some boots on the ground who will be
- 49:43spectating the race in person and hopefully able to join us to
- 49:47provide the review of the race and what they see and go on.
- 49:50So hopefully next week, next week's episode could be fun
- 49:54there. Regarding the start lists, they
- 49:58are out. However, you have to manually
- 50:01search people's names to like see if they're on there or not
- 50:04and in all the. Capacity of things that I have
- 50:08to do. I have decided I don't have
- 50:11capacity to do that, so I'm sure they'll be released this week.
- 50:15Or to be fair, they actually might not be released this week
- 50:18knowing how things operate, but in the past, like MO.
- 50:23Farah. Has run there so I'm sure it
- 50:27will be incredibly densely packed out in the field as well.
- 50:31I think I heard Mo Farah is running.
- 50:35No way. Well, I've got the capacity.
- 50:37To search Mo Farah and the startlessly isn't come up.
- 50:42Maybe I'll type Sarah. No, isn't come up?
- 50:46What about Muhammad? Well, Farah doesn't come.
- 50:49Up either, but no. Maybe it's going to be a late
- 50:52entry. But you heard it here first.
- 50:55It they're saving. Him like Bakili.
- 50:57I'm just going. To announce him in the race
- 50:59week, Yeah. Then he'll last like 2K.
- 51:04I'd say Mo Farah is absolutely. Wedged now with all the
- 51:08endorsements that like talk about Kipchogi, Farah's been
- 51:12doing it for years but hasn't been racing.
- 51:14He's just going around getting paydays and endorsements and
- 51:18sponsorship deals off absolutely everyone and he's a Sir, but you
- 51:25don't get paid for being a. Sir, do you don't know?
- 51:30Perhaps not formally. I have a master's degree, so
- 51:33really you should call me like. Master, which I think is a level
- 51:36above Sir, isn't it? Well if you ever meet them
- 51:42you'll have to tell them. I searched a male caress as
- 51:48well. He isn't on there but I was
- 51:51trying to think who else to. Search, but then I'm going to.
- 51:53End up all day searching names and then that kind of defeats
- 51:56the object of what I've just said.
- 51:58Well, with Philip Sessman. Now.
- 52:02He's doing Valencia any? Yeah, but would.
- 52:04That take it I think. It could still work.
- 52:09No, it doesn't come up. Do you want?
- 52:12To tell us about your. Training week how actually alpha
- 52:15man thought comes up. There you go found one person.
- 52:22It's it's a legit list. What would call Nelson?
- 52:29Be on that. Would he be doing that 2K
- 52:32equivalent that's. Already that that that thing was
- 52:35last week true Callum. Nelson's on good.
- 52:40Shot you've got. Rory Lanyard, you got Scott B.
- 52:43It's actually going to be pretty stacked as well.
- 52:46Rory Leonard's on there. Scott B.
- 52:48He's. On there.
- 52:48There you go, Team Macau. We're all no Adam Fogg fog.
- 52:54Dog. Said he was doing. 1/2 marathon
- 52:57in Philadelphia I think the weekend after next, if not next
- 53:02weekend and it was a nice mention.
- 53:05Of the pod on his latest YouTube vid.
- 53:08Yeah that was cool. We got the slot in between.
- 53:10Whilst he's commentating over his mate play in FIFA, I think
- 53:15as his mate goes 41 off he gives easy AA shout out.
- 53:18I think that's authentic. That way I appreciated it and
- 53:24some good insight. Into his shoe rotation.
- 53:26Like, and the shoes themselves. Yeah, I noticed you were.
- 53:33In the Under Armour. Before, as Adam Falk been
- 53:35sending you a parcel own I actually have a lot of Under
- 53:39Armour. Gear, surprisingly.
- 53:40And I love their rain jackets. They do this like storm rain
- 53:44jacket that actually keeps you dry because I know a lot of the
- 53:48other range like I have a few Nike and ASIC ones and they
- 53:50actually they do not do anything.
- 53:53Umm yeah, I've got a lot of half zips actually I've got my gloves
- 53:57are Under Armour. Some I have actually have a nice
- 53:59little collection of Under Armour and like you know, the
- 54:03body warmers. The Under Armour.
- 54:05Body warmers that like stick to your skin nearly.
- 54:09No, it's like umm, it's they normally have a high neck.
- 54:14And yeah, like they're super popular over.
- 54:16Here, like you actually called them under armours, Yeah.
- 54:20Oh yeah, yeah, sorry. So.
- 54:23Yeah, I've got a few. Of them because skin, we used to
- 54:26call them skins, yeah, yeah, we call them under armours here,
- 54:30ironically. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:33So we actually. Have a good bit of underwear
- 54:34gear. No shoes yet?
- 54:37We call them skins because they were made from the.
- 54:40Skin product, right? Like that was the brand, is that
- 54:42what you're talking about? Right.
- 54:44Yeah. I mean, I don't know why it was.
- 54:46Called. Skins necessary?
- 54:49I thought it was because it was like stuck to your skin and
- 54:52looked like it was your skin. Wasn't there a brand though?
- 54:56Don't think. They penetrated the British
- 54:58market. Back when I was wearing them,
- 55:00there is a brand. There is a brand called Skins.
- 55:05As popular in in footy AFL, we'd wear a pair of skins.
- 55:13I suppose it's sort of like a second layer of skin, isn't?
- 55:15It Yeah. Oh, and before we get into
- 55:20training weeks. And talk about no doubt you're
- 55:23leading. Well, it's two weeks out from
- 55:25your race, but still we'll talk about it.
- 55:27I don't know if you've seen, you know, after your training week
- 55:30last week and you said about the attempted 4 by mile workout that
- 55:35you switched on the fly. And like Dean said about the the
- 55:40paces were pretty hot, aspirational and whatever.
- 55:44And you were quite harsh on yourself that you didn't hit
- 55:46them. Adam Fogg, did you see he done 7
- 55:50by a mile at similar paces in this video.
- 55:53Yeah. Way to make me feel shit, Adam.
- 55:58Sound. Well, you reckon he?
- 56:01Had your? Recap of your session, he
- 56:03thought. I'll just go out and blast seven
- 56:05of them. Well, I think, what was he in?
- 56:07He was hitting. For 40s was he?
- 56:09And then the last he got faster and faster and faster.
- 56:14Yeah, but. Adam fought.
- 56:16Yeah, I mean, he does have a 350.
- 56:18Mile or whatever under his belt. Yeah, so.
- 56:22He can have that one and secondary.
- 56:26To that for more. This is trying to make you feel
- 56:29better by the way, with these people doing these workouts was
- 56:33I don't know if you've seen Connor Mance, he's maybe injured
- 56:36as well. He's been doing like a lot of
- 56:37cross training on his Strava. So I was just like scrolling
- 56:40through, seeing to what extent he's been injured and how much
- 56:44cross training he's done and done.
- 56:46And then it came to one of his most recent sessions on November
- 56:52the 6th, 10 days ago. 5 by a mile.
- 56:57Your nose paces. What?
- 56:59Your target was what was your target?
- 57:02Wait, he's still running like last week?
- 57:04He still? Around 172 oh this week he done
- 57:06nothing this week was just 17 kilometers, but he can like.
- 57:11It's was it? You were going for I.
- 57:13Was going. I was going for four. 20 sixes
- 57:18was it? Let me just double check, but go
- 57:22on in there. I'll wait till.
- 57:23You. Oh no, I'll wait till.
- 57:24You've got an answer. But the context obviously being
- 57:27Connor Man's American North American record holder over the
- 57:31marathon done this 5 by a mile in.
- 57:35I'll tell you once you tell me what mine was 426 pace. 426
- 57:40shit. He's done these I think off to
- 57:4330 as well. IN438438434433432 add altitude.
- 57:53Well, yeah. Yeah.
- 57:57Probably with a group as well. But he he's a.
- 58:01He's a bit I'm going to. Calm out here on this one.
- 58:03Like he fair enough, he's kind of, but he literally ran.
- 58:08Did you not run a marathon pretty recently?
- 58:10Like he paced his girlfriend or something or his wife after
- 58:14doing a marathon? Yeah, he paid.
- 58:18He paced his wife. To win, Yeah.
- 58:21When was his? How long after it would that
- 58:23have been like 3 weeks or something?
- 58:24I mean, they ran 2:45, so it would have been.
- 58:27It's not about the time. It's not about the.
- 58:29Time, it's like it's still 42 kilometers in your legs, like,
- 58:34yeah. And now he's injured.
- 58:36Yeah, playing on the wall. Fucking hell, Connor.
- 58:41And he spells his name. Really weird, doesn't he CONNE
- 58:43or is that normal? Yeah, definitely.
- 58:47How do you spell your name? I take a back.
- 58:55And take a back. Our.
- 58:59Correspondent for Liverpool. Cross country next week has a
- 59:02son called Connor spell like months.
- 59:07The did you see? The on one.
- 59:09Of the photos, there's people holding up signs saying like
- 59:13months don't poo your pants. That's a good one.
- 59:19Anyway, right? Give us some training talk, some
- 59:21real. Run.
- 59:23So I took. The Monday totally off after the
- 59:28flight and just I was probably due at rest day anyway, so I
- 59:32took that Monday totally off and the Tuesday then I, I wore the
- 59:41Puma Magmax for the first time. I bought that when I was in in
- 59:46Spain. So I came home to that and it's
- 59:48basically just like a Max cushion shoe and it was really,
- 59:53really nice to run in and I wore it there yesterday as well.
- 59:57And it's probably my favorite shoe.
- 1:00:02It's nice you can get moving in well, like.
- 1:00:04I think for this run on the Tuesday morning for 5 minutes or
- 1:00:084 eighteens and yeah it was it was a really, really nice ride.
- 1:00:13Really liked it. What from?
- 1:00:16Like the Nike or the? ASICS range?
- 1:00:19Would you compare it to from? The Nike.
- 1:00:23Range I'd probably go. I haven't tried the Romero Plus,
- 1:00:27but like it's a big chunk of foam.
- 1:00:30Basically. I've nothing like the shoe in my
- 1:00:32like sort of rotation. So I sort of like wanted to
- 1:00:34cover like a recovery shoe Max cushion for when my legs are
- 1:00:38beat up. And yeah, so probably like, I'm
- 1:00:41not sure how soft of Romero Plus is, but something similar to
- 1:00:45that like Max cushion. Like I want to say this one
- 1:00:47isn't super soft, but it's just got a lot of foam to like take
- 1:00:50the brunt, which I like. So yeah, highly recommend.
- 1:00:56And that evening then? I went so Ireland now it's like
- 1:01:02super, super dark. So I'm finished work.
- 1:01:04It's pitch black. So I sort of have to find like
- 1:01:08alternate routes like run because they don't want to get
- 1:01:11hit by a car or a tractor. So I actually went from work, I
- 1:01:15went like further north, basically further away from my
- 1:01:18house to a place called Drata. And there is a little strip
- 1:01:22there that's all lit like alongside a river, so like
- 1:01:26pancake flat and it's all lit. So it's probably where I'll do a
- 1:01:30lot of my training from now on. I'll just head in from work.
- 1:01:32But the session was 2 by 15 minutes off 5.
- 1:01:38What were the? Paces I hitting these I'm
- 1:01:40pretty. Sure it was just 310 for like
- 1:01:42the 15 minutes consistently. It averaged at around 3:10,
- 1:01:47Yeah, so. And the float was just chilling,
- 1:01:49like shuffling. And I wore the Adidas Boston 12
- 1:01:53for that session and that was along with like a warm up on
- 1:01:57them cool, 3 minute warm up, terminal cool down.
- 1:02:01I mean 3K warm up, 3K cool down. They the Boston.
- 1:02:05Tolls were good. Enough to do that sort of
- 1:02:08effort. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:11Did. They've got these like carbon
- 1:02:13rods or something in them. So yeah, a lot easier to do with
- 1:02:17them in that than the nice structures I was using in Spain
- 1:02:21and. Normally I like.
- 1:02:24This is probably a Dick move, but normally on my Strava I just
- 1:02:28have a like set to like my followers can see it and I don't
- 1:02:31have a like set to anyone. But I seen that this one was
- 1:02:35relatively was relatively good going.
- 1:02:37So like for 10 for 10.2 K average like 318 pace.
- 1:02:41So I said it to like public. When it does this, you can get
- 1:02:47all the crowns. So yeah, I got like 2 crowns,
- 1:02:56yeah, so. Great run, people in Drive are
- 1:03:00probably like what the hell if anyone's within striking.
- 1:03:03Distance of. This town, please strike.
- 1:03:09It's that I think. People do?
- 1:03:10No, definitely. Not 5 segments 100.
- 1:03:13Percent. It is, yeah.
- 1:03:14Oh yeah, that's what kept me kept.
- 1:03:16Me running through. COVID was literally just finding
- 1:03:19straights of had not run down and sprinting during a job you
- 1:03:25know? On if you have Strava.
- 1:03:27Premium because I don't customer Lynchburg can you can you see
- 1:03:32like could I click onto one of your profiles and see what
- 1:03:35crowns you hold? Yeah, Yeah.
- 1:03:38So I could. Deliberately go and target.
- 1:03:40Not that I'd be able to get them, but like yours there's a
- 1:03:43I'm pretty sure and I'm assume. It still exists, but there's a
- 1:03:46website and it'll tell you what your closest crowns are.
- 1:03:49So like what you could you could.
- 1:03:51You should prioritize based on how close you are to cracking
- 1:03:54crowns. I used to frequent it back in
- 1:03:57the. Day but back.
- 1:03:58When Strava was far less popular, like it was originally
- 1:04:01just a lot of cyclists on there, not as many runners.
- 1:04:03But when I was getting into it, the thought of just chasing
- 1:04:07Strava segments was my form of running really right.
- 1:04:12It's devastating. And if you if you ever have one.
- 1:04:14From like years ago in a place where you don't run anymore and
- 1:04:18then you get the e-mail or like somewhere where you're on
- 1:04:20holiday and you're never going to run it again or it actually
- 1:04:24annoys. Me when the.
- 1:04:25Person who has the crown has clearly like rid a bike or drove
- 1:04:29a car. Yeah, that's I.
- 1:04:32Used to. I used to place them because you
- 1:04:35could flag the activities. You can go into that person's
- 1:04:38activity and flag it. Now I don't think you can even
- 1:04:40do it through your phone. You have to do it through
- 1:04:42desktop. And there's just too many now
- 1:04:45because there's certain popular segments that people always ride
- 1:04:48along and don't change their activity type.
- 1:04:51I mean, I think Strive is getting better, but yeah, I've
- 1:04:54I've given up over time. Ryan, you'll probably know us
- 1:05:00now. And when you just get.
- 1:05:01Back training, there's this same hilly mile loop that we done and
- 1:05:08me and Dean, what was the session?
- 1:05:09It was like 5 by a mile or something.
- 1:05:11Yeah. Bush miles and I, I actually.
- 1:05:15So Dean beat me in the last mile, but his satellite was off.
- 1:05:20So I actually have this segment in it.
- 1:05:23I got a joke when he gets going. Yeah, it was like.
- 1:05:29I I, I've rinsed that segment. I gave everything for that, for
- 1:05:33that, knowing what I was doing, timing it.
- 1:05:37And somehow Strava's robbed me. Yeah.
- 1:05:40And then and now. I know.
- 1:05:43It's on your hit list. And Wednesday morning I just.
- 1:05:49Got out so I don't like a 30 minute bike and then straight
- 1:05:52after that I got out for like 35 minutes.
- 1:05:54So a bit of a mix of I didn't want to go out and do like a big
- 1:05:58long run because I'm sort of conscious that I have a lot of
- 1:06:02like work in my legs that I'm just trying to get out with the
- 1:06:05race now next week. So yeah, I done 30 minutes on
- 1:06:08the bike and then 35 minutes run straight after 7 kilometers are
- 1:06:12like 430 pace and. The next morning was just. 2
- 1:06:17easy ones and again an easy double.
- 1:06:20Just chilling. Friday was because I had Monday
- 1:06:24off. I am ran on Friday morning.
- 1:06:30What date was Friday? The 14th?
- 1:06:32So yeah 40 minutes and 4:30 fives 8.7 kilometers.
- 1:06:37Then that evening then I got a massage.
- 1:06:41I seen my physio for the first time just to get massage and
- 1:06:45which is like a staple. Now on my.
- 1:06:47Routine every week. Just get massage, you know,
- 1:06:51sometimes. After a massage your muscles.
- 1:06:53Will like ache more so than they did before, but like in a good
- 1:06:56way almost your legs like conditioned to that now or you
- 1:07:00still get that sort of feeling. I'm getting there.
- 1:07:03It takes a while, but. Like I feel like after massage.
- 1:07:07I do feel so. So good, so because I've been
- 1:07:11getting this now like for the last like 2 months.
- 1:07:13So it's sort of like, yeah, I'm sort of seeing the benefits now.
- 1:07:16And like soon when I start doing more intense work, he'll start
- 1:07:19like normally it's just the legs.
- 1:07:20But he says like when you start doing more intense work, I'll
- 1:07:23he'll start doing my back as well.
- 1:07:24Because I think a back is like a neglected part of like a
- 1:07:27runner's body where people just concentrate on the legs.
- 1:07:29But the back like sort of very, very important as.
- 1:07:33Well, so. He'll start working into that
- 1:07:35pretty soon. Sorry, keep sidetracking because
- 1:07:39I don't really have. Too much running to talk about.
- 1:07:41But when I get a massage, I always go go to the I was going
- 1:07:45to say Asian places, but then that was going to sound dodgy.
- 1:07:48The, the legit Asian ones in the in the shopping centres, very,
- 1:07:52very legit and above board. So I can use my, so I can use my
- 1:07:58health insurance because in the illegitimate ones, I'm sure they
- 1:08:01don't accept health insurance anyway.
- 1:08:06So then they at the start they say like what you want or
- 1:08:09whatever. And I always say like lower back
- 1:08:12and legs. And then they proceed to just
- 1:08:14give me a full body Thai massage either way, you know, like they
- 1:08:18do hands and everything and like your ears and your scalp.
- 1:08:21And I'm like, well, what's the point of me actually telling you
- 1:08:24I like, I don't care for any bloody arm massage.
- 1:08:28Please just spend that time on my legs.
- 1:08:30But they just don't anytime. Yeah, that's why you should go
- 1:08:34to like a. Sports.
- 1:08:35Masseuse I. Need to make use of this health
- 1:08:40insurance? Yes, it's not bad.
- 1:08:42You can still claim. It.
- 1:08:43No. Yeah, maybe.
- 1:08:46Probably you can. Yeah, you can.
- 1:08:47You can claim that rate, but that.
- 1:08:49Massage rebate is claimable at most.
- 1:08:57Most providers like. CB Echo sports massage.
- 1:08:59And all those places say they give you health care rate at OK,
- 1:09:04I'll. Maybe I'll switch.
- 1:09:06Yeah, I went to the CB1 a couple of times.
- 1:09:08They're pretty good. They've got like 50 masseuses as
- 1:09:10well, so you're always guaranteed nearly to get on
- 1:09:14Saturday. Morning I.
- 1:09:16Sort of had my well jam just threshold the higher end of
- 1:09:19threshold 3 by 10 minutes off 5. And then yeah, it was one of
- 1:09:24those mornings when you look outside the window, it's pissing
- 1:09:27rain and you're like, how do I like even go about staying dry?
- 1:09:31So I really just bring like 3 like pieces of like outfits, one
- 1:09:37for the warm up, one for the session and one for the cool
- 1:09:39down. There's no point to put on wet
- 1:09:41clothes. You'll just get sick or
- 1:09:42something. So yeah, 3 by 10 minutes off 5
- 1:09:47again averaging I'd say around 3 tens, 39 distance, 11.2 K the
- 1:09:52pace, average pace for the whole thing was like 320 threes.
- 1:09:56So and that was feeling, feeling pretty good.
- 1:09:59So I'm trying to get them paces to feel to feel a little bit
- 1:10:03easier. And then that evening I done 45
- 1:10:09minutes in the mag Max again, the Puma mag Max 10K at 4
- 1:10:15thirteens and I'm yet to get out and do my long run.
- 1:10:19I'll see about that. Just I don't even have it's only
- 1:10:2170 minutes. The taper has sort of started.
- 1:10:24So but again, yeah, that mag Max we've got rolling in at 4
- 1:10:28thirteens. And like, normally my easy runs
- 1:10:31would probably be I'd say around four 30s, four 40s around then.
- 1:10:37But yeah, I don't know. It's there's a nice roll to
- 1:10:39them. Nice, right, Really, really like
- 1:10:41them. I'd really, I'd love to.
- 1:10:43I think I will get a pair of the the fast or threes.
- 1:10:47I'm tossing up between getting the ASIC ones.
- 1:10:49But see with the ASIC ones, I don't know which one to get.
- 1:10:52Like you hear two different things about the sky or the
- 1:10:55edge. Whereas with the Puma one, like
- 1:10:59it's just proven that it's meant to be good gummy bear.
- 1:11:09So yeah, that'll probably be my next running shoe I purchase or
- 1:11:14hopefully I'll get it for. Christmas.
- 1:11:15Wink, wink. But yeah, please, that's me.
- 1:11:20I'd say I'll hit around 100 and odd K this week.
- 1:11:23And yeah, it's all downhill from here go.
- 1:11:27Haze in the barn, that's. What they say, Yeah.
- 1:11:32Any idea what? Sort of pace might be.
- 1:11:34Race pace next week like it's 7. .5 kilometers.
- 1:11:39Like I feel if you're in luck, it totally depends on unfoat
- 1:11:44condition. Like if it was bone dry and it's
- 1:11:47around football pitches, it's basically like a track and then
- 1:11:50boys can hit like 2 fifties, two 40s.
- 1:11:53So I'd say if you're in like 40, I really, really, really don't
- 1:11:58have a clue. I'd be lying if I said I do.
- 1:12:01Like I want to say if you're in like heart race, pardon, you
- 1:12:04know, I. Go off, heart.
- 1:12:05Any way? Heart race or just fucking send
- 1:12:09it. I'm not going to wear a watch.
- 1:12:11Absolutely not play here. Hi, Ray Runner.
- 1:12:13I will literally. Cross country is a pure feel
- 1:12:16like there's no point. So yeah, absolutely send it.
- 1:12:22You guys didn't listen to the. Science of Sport podcast this
- 1:12:27week I've downloaded, haven't listened to it yet.
- 1:12:31They were talking about this. I forget the principle, but
- 1:12:35it's, and it's shocking that I can't remember the name of it,
- 1:12:38but it's basically talking about how there's certain things
- 1:12:42within our body that stop us from going too hard.
- 1:12:46But so and so you can take when you take certain stimulants,
- 1:12:50they override those functions to basically be able to take
- 1:12:53yourself to a place that you otherwise couldn't.
- 1:12:56I would say that that Owen. Will.
- 1:12:58You know, I suspect you'll be able to.
- 1:13:00And Ryan, I think you mentioned to me in that first ten KS in
- 1:13:04Maragami, I think that's what your reference was.
- 1:13:06So I'm thinking, oh, and we'll find a place of suffering
- 1:13:10without the need for a watch or a heart rate or anything like
- 1:13:12that. You'll just lock into that the
- 1:13:15right effort, won't you? On the weekend?
- 1:13:18That's literally the joy across country there's.
- 1:13:20No, there's no point of looking at all them training metrics
- 1:13:23like it's a race. It's totally different
- 1:13:25conditions outside of training. And yeah, just literally full
- 1:13:29sand hang on to the back of them boys for as long as possible.
- 1:13:33Exactly. What spikes?
- 1:13:38Oh, I've got these white. Dragonfly twos white for cross
- 1:13:42country yeah, I've put them in the I had to wash them twice
- 1:13:45now, but so they're not quite white, but I'm not bothered
- 1:13:49paying another couple £100 for for the cross country spikes.
- 1:13:54I literally like dragonflies with 15 mil spikes in them and
- 1:14:01yeah that will that'll be great. They wouldn't know.
- 1:14:03That's right. It's just.
- 1:14:05They've only four spikes. Instead of the traditional 6.
- 1:14:09But look, I don't like it's. I think it's all pretty
- 1:14:11irrelevant. Just fucking run fast, huh?
- 1:14:13Yeah, they're the ones with like the.
- 1:14:15Pink and orange stripe on the firm or I actually have them
- 1:14:20here beside. Me, yeah.
- 1:14:25I don't know why I have them here beside me.
- 1:14:27This is going to bed with. Them at the minute.
- 1:14:31Oh yeah. Hey there, decent Nick, given
- 1:14:33you've. Used them a bit, yeah.
- 1:14:37The key is to don't let the muck dry.
- 1:14:41You have to get into them. Like straight away.
- 1:14:43Just throw them in a bucket of war.
- 1:14:46Do they? Do they have your current?
- 1:14:475 KPB in them, yeah. Yeah, that's what I wore for
- 1:14:51nationals. Trustee Spike.
- 1:14:55Yeah. So we'll see how they go.
- 1:14:57In the in the mock this weekend, it's actually going to be very
- 1:15:00cold next week in Ireland. I think it gets down to 0, so
- 1:15:04it'll be interesting to see if it's a hard or a wet muck on
- 1:15:09Sunday. But yeah, boys, that's me
- 1:15:13sleeves. Oh, we'll see.
- 1:15:14I might go to pennies. Or Primark as you'd call it and
- 1:15:18just pick up a pair like cheap gloves or something.
- 1:15:20I will wear arm sleeves and I'll just if I get too warm, I'll
- 1:15:23chop the gloves on the ground and normally like you like my
- 1:15:27family will be up there so I can just choke the arm sleeves to.
- 1:15:30I have these ideas, ones I got years and years ago so it
- 1:15:34wouldn't be the end of the world if I lost them, but I probably
- 1:15:36will. It depends on how cold it gets
- 1:15:37because I'm really bad in the cold as well.
- 1:15:39Well, like as in I feel the cold really bad, so I'm better off
- 1:15:42like being a little bit too warm than too cold.
- 1:15:48Nice. Well, good luck.
- 1:15:50Just I. Don't know where to wear split
- 1:15:51ease or half tights? That's the might be a bit might
- 1:15:55be a bit cold in the split. Ease.
- 1:15:57Yeah, I was thinking if it is cold, I'll wear half.
- 1:15:59Tights, but I do prefer prefer split ease.
- 1:16:04Yeah, boys, nice work looking. Forward to seeing how you get
- 1:16:08on. Thank you.
- 1:16:10Dean, let's hear about what you've been up to.
- 1:16:13How are you getting on on the journey back?
- 1:16:16Good. Yeah, I think it was a.
- 1:16:18Good week. So across the three.
- 1:16:24I. Rode 220 KS, ran 40 KS and was
- 1:16:30elliptical just under 2 hours. So terms of like Monday is just
- 1:16:36a couple of easy rides, a couple of.
- 1:16:37So I'm running 15 minutes morning and afternoon and then
- 1:16:41this weekend back to 20 minutes morning and afternoon.
- 1:16:45And yeah, sort of the least little to no discomfort, which
- 1:16:49is nice. So there runs today.
- 1:16:51Yeah, I didn't feel anything. Neither did I yesterday.
- 1:16:55I don't think I did Friday. So all pain free, which is a
- 1:16:59nice feeling. And yeah, just following like a
- 1:17:02slow reloading. So either just on the treadmill
- 1:17:05if I'm at home with the family, or just, yeah, 20 minutes or
- 1:17:08whatever before I jump on the bike, head to work if it's
- 1:17:13starting. To feel OK.
- 1:17:15The way it is now, is it hard to just stick to the 15 minutes and
- 1:17:19to keep the pace very slow or it was a little bit uncomfortable?
- 1:17:23Starting it and even like earlier in the week, like I did
- 1:17:27a harder bike session, I was a little bit sore after the bike
- 1:17:30interval. So I'm very conscious that if I
- 1:17:34push too hard. I might go backwards.
- 1:17:37So I'm just trying to load everything up I think.
- 1:17:40And like 15 minutes to 20 minutes is the biggest sort of
- 1:17:44incremental lift of a 5 minute block.
- 1:17:47I think once I get to say 30 to 35 and so on, you know, it'll be
- 1:17:53incrementally less. So in theory it should be less
- 1:17:56risky. So for these few weeks, I'm just
- 1:18:00being fairly careful. Even the treadmill paces aren't
- 1:18:03fast just because I just don't want to get sore.
- 1:18:06So. But everything feels good.
- 1:18:08My hip mobility feels quite good.
- 1:18:10I'm doing HIPAA hip mobility exercises.
- 1:18:12I'm lifting in the gym, like doing 2 longer gym sessions a
- 1:18:16week and then doing band work every other day and then just
- 1:18:21yeah, doing my easy runs in and around riding.
- 1:18:24So Tuesday was like an aerobic ride, Thursday was the intervals
- 1:18:29in Kings Park, and then Saturday was a a longer ride.
- 1:18:34We ended up doing 110 KS all up. So we did the regular group
- 1:18:40ride. We did, but we joined another
- 1:18:41group before then. Ryan and a friend of mine,
- 1:18:45Andrew and and I will did the an early bird ride that was an hour
- 1:18:50before the the main ride and we felt that, didn't we?
- 1:18:53We sort of probably gassed by the end.
- 1:18:56Certainly dead legs were popped. And they still are popped today.
- 1:19:00Oh and you remember when we used to meet at 6:00 AM or try to for
- 1:19:04a long run? Well, this 6:00 AM is a.
- 1:19:08Lion. For these cyclists, the Dean
- 1:19:10Others meeting at 5:30 AM yesterday and you actually get
- 1:19:14up for it. I was there like 5.
- 1:19:17Minutes early, bizarrely. How I was there on the?
- 1:19:21Dot, the problem with these right, is that they'll start and
- 1:19:30then like, you know, you get that 25% discount by sitting
- 1:19:34behind someone. So you, you sort of, if you are
- 1:19:37late, you're going to suffer to get back on the group if you
- 1:19:39can't get back on the group. So yeah, can't afford to be late
- 1:19:44to them where we would stand around in the car.
- 1:19:48Park until 6:05. There's no standing around on
- 1:19:51the bikes, they're just gone on the dot.
- 1:19:54We should be. It is a good way to be.
- 1:19:58But yeah, no training is going well.
- 1:20:00So everything was good. I enjoyed yesterday's ride in
- 1:20:03particular. Oh, I don't I don't get didn't
- 1:20:06count either. The 40 we we attempted.
- 1:20:08We'll talk about it a bit more I'm sure over the next few
- 1:20:10weeks. But we're trialling a products,
- 1:20:11weren't we today, Ryan and. Doing our best to try and get
- 1:20:16our heart rates up for some lactate testing that.
- 1:20:20And so that was a bit of fun as well.
- 1:20:21So yeah, it's probably the biggest, biggest week of
- 1:20:24training I've done in a while. Must be about 14-15 hours of
- 1:20:28exercise, which is good. I know you.
- 1:20:32Were checking in on you. What is it the metric called on
- 1:20:35the training peaks? Oh my CTL.
- 1:20:39Yeah, yeah. Has it never been?
- 1:20:44Yeah, it is. Yeah, so.
- 1:20:45My so my training load is yeah is not very good it's appalling,
- 1:20:51but my they have 3 scores you. Have like a fatigue.
- 1:20:56Score, fitness score and form score and the ratio between
- 1:20:59your, your fatigues, basically what sort of training load
- 1:21:01you've been under the last seven days.
- 1:21:03So you would be familiar with high fatigue during say that
- 1:21:05training camp, right? Yeah.
- 1:21:07And so you try your acute load is super high and what you want
- 1:21:11to do is keep your acute load above your current fitness level
- 1:21:15if you want to be building fitness essentially.
- 1:21:19And then what you do when you want to taper for a race is you
- 1:21:22start reducing your fatigue. But naturally then your form
- 1:21:26starts to improve because you're not as tired.
- 1:21:29But then at some point your fitness is going to come
- 1:21:30slightly off and it's trying to, that's what you're doing when
- 1:21:32you're trying to freshen up for a race is balance the trade off
- 1:21:35of a little bit of fitness. But there the uptick in form
- 1:21:38taper generally is worth more than a slight decline in
- 1:21:42fitness. But that obvious obviously not
- 1:21:45relevant for me right now. I'm just trying to pump up the
- 1:21:48the fatigue and and hold on. And yeah, this is the this is
- 1:21:52the highest, yeah, like form score I've got in a while, which
- 1:21:56you don't normally see numbers this big.
- 1:21:58So I've got to be careful. I'm probably ramping it up too
- 1:21:59quick. But anyway, having a go all in
- 1:22:04moderation. Whilst on the.
- 1:22:05Bike as as Andrew found out when he went to his Strava and looked
- 1:22:10at his training loads and it was like dum dum, dum, dum dum and
- 1:22:15like what, What have you been doing?
- 1:22:17He said. I, I just jump on the bike at
- 1:22:20home and usually ride at like 90 beats per minute.
- 1:22:24Dean's like mate, there's no point getting out of bed for
- 1:22:27that. Although I'd say.
- 1:22:29That. Off his the back of his ride
- 1:22:32yesterday would have had a decent training school, wouldn't
- 1:22:34he? Because he was this guy Dean's
- 1:22:37mate. He was.
- 1:22:37I said to him at the start, would you want to tell the
- 1:22:40stories in so? So he rode with.
- 1:22:43Us last week, Andrew. So I've known Andrew for a long
- 1:22:46time and he he has gotten fitter and fitter over time as a rider.
- 1:22:53And we did triathlons together back in the day was mainly
- 1:22:56riding and LA. And I mentioned about this group
- 1:22:59ride we're doing and so he said, yeah, look, I'll come along.
- 1:23:02So he came along last week, but he did this early bird ride
- 1:23:04beforehand. I think thinking that the ride
- 1:23:05we did was a bit easier than what it was and he was pretty
- 1:23:09unwell in fairness to him, but he did a heap of work early and
- 1:23:12then popped off the back and we didn't see him.
- 1:23:14He was just wrecked. And so he sort of had to crawl
- 1:23:17his way back to the Cafe and he did kindly get coffees for us,
- 1:23:20which was very kind. And so that was it, Nothing was
- 1:23:23said. And then at the start of this
- 1:23:25week, Ryan, who normally who doesn't really know Andrew all
- 1:23:28that well, but still was, we've done the early bird hour
- 1:23:32together and we're joining the main group ride and he turns to
- 1:23:34Andrew and he goes. So are we finishing the ride
- 1:23:37today, fellas? And when he said where, he was
- 1:23:41basically saying that to Andrew and it went straight over
- 1:23:44Andrew's head. And then I explained it to him
- 1:23:46and Andrew took it. If if there was ever like a
- 1:23:50illustration of male ego, it was it was then because he basically
- 1:23:54then he then proceeded to spend the next of the next probably
- 1:23:57hour of the ride. Andrew was at the front of it
- 1:24:00for about 55 minutes of it. And the only other time was when
- 1:24:03Ryan was trying to attack Andrew.
- 1:24:05And so they ended up getting told off by multiple people
- 1:24:08because they were just the, the road broke apart basically.
- 1:24:11There was this multiple people got dropped.
- 1:24:14There was a lovely lady who was just getting back into her
- 1:24:17riding and I chatted to her only briefly because she got spat out
- 1:24:20the back and then her partner, I think had to go find her.
- 1:24:23And then the guys have been caught up to them and told them
- 1:24:26to slow down. And then Andrew is not happy
- 1:24:29that they're getting told to slow down and then later we're
- 1:24:33getting. Told we should be rolling.
- 1:24:34Off. Was it rolling off or there's
- 1:24:36some sort of terms and they're like, not it that these guys
- 1:24:38even know what that means. And so there was a lot of, I
- 1:24:42don't know, it's a bit of Archie Budgie going on.
- 1:24:44I never knew there's so much politics and cycling.
- 1:24:48It's huge, it's huge. It's.
- 1:24:50A big learning curve. Like I think the idea is when
- 1:24:56you're. When you're in front and you're
- 1:24:58doing the work, you do it in a way like, so say we watch the
- 1:25:02tour and someone will attack and they'll do it in a way where
- 1:25:05they drop the hammer and then don't want people on their
- 1:25:07wheel. And that's sort of what Ryan and
- 1:25:10Andrew were doing. And I think the idea of a group
- 1:25:12ride is you're trying to do it in a way where you bring them
- 1:25:14along with you. Yeah, these are in the wrong
- 1:25:17group. So.
- 1:25:20Many unwritten rules of cycling that.
- 1:25:22We're just learning them. I feel like you need.
- 1:25:26You need Luke Bait, you need being Luke, a group at Luke Bait
- 1:25:29so he can drop you guys so literally on Thursday.
- 1:25:33RAF fed us to Luke and who is the other guy we're with right?
- 1:25:372 two young. Punks that are just.
- 1:25:39Great cyclists, right? And we're doing these crit
- 1:25:42circuits, very technical circuits, and it's essentially
- 1:25:45the pre fatigue before the proper intervals start.
- 1:25:49And we're and it's goes like steady, strong, steady, strong,
- 1:25:53easy. And then two laps flat out right
- 1:25:55is the brief and it's very technical turns and all this
- 1:25:59sort of stuff. They tried their best to drop us
- 1:26:01before then we managed to hold on and they're gapping us every
- 1:26:04turn because we can't turn like they do.
- 1:26:06As soon as the two laps starts, they just put on this almighty
- 1:26:09shift and just bury us. And we were both we were
- 1:26:12absolutely buckled, right? We couldn't we couldn't pull
- 1:26:14them back. And they did it deliberately,
- 1:26:15like no, like, hey, let's start. They just, they, they felt a
- 1:26:19small gap buried us and that was it.
- 1:26:23And. That's on a Thursday morning
- 1:26:25and. Then on the Thursday evening you
- 1:26:27see the video from the front runner Instagram page, but it's
- 1:26:30just buried the whole group. The different Thursday.
- 1:26:34Threshold. Luke hasn't run in a couple of
- 1:26:37weeks because he's like they Neil.
- 1:26:39Yeah. And.
- 1:26:40Then you see Tom. Moorcroft smooth as you like,
- 1:26:43obviously incredibly fit and Luke's 5 meters ahead of him.
- 1:26:48Thursday threshold at VO2. Yeah, after he's buried us in
- 1:26:52the morning. Too.
- 1:26:55Anyway, that was funny. And after.
- 1:26:57Afterwards, when we're having coffee, Andrew said Were you
- 1:27:02hair? And because when I was going to
- 1:27:04the front, I wasn't actually trying to like just drop you in
- 1:27:08one go. I was trying to like squeeze
- 1:27:10every bit of effort out of you to like give you a slight bit of
- 1:27:13hope that you you were kind of in the fight and just make you
- 1:27:15suffer. You'd literally lit a rocket and
- 1:27:18it just. Broke the whole group up and it
- 1:27:20just, he was so angry. It was so good.
- 1:27:24But like I was wrecked. It was like 3 hours, 3 hours of
- 1:27:28pretty high heart rate writing for me.
- 1:27:29I was I enjoyed the show from back behind many a wheel.
- 1:27:35So polls going on cycling. Talk, Yes, cycling talk.
- 1:27:39Now the people will decide. I'm hoping it hangs on they
- 1:27:42people just want it. For four more weeks because
- 1:27:44hopefully we're back running by then.
- 1:27:47Well, yeah, so are you. Progressing to 20. 5 minutes
- 1:27:50with your jogs next week? I don't know.
- 1:27:54I wouldn't have thought so I've. Only just started doing 20
- 1:27:56minutes. I'll just, but I'm sure I'll
- 1:28:00connect with Steve to see. When the right time.
- 1:28:02Is but I'm not really. I'll just do what I'm told so.
- 1:28:06So if you do 2 by 20 minutes. Every day next week, what volume
- 1:28:11will you get from? That about 60 days, yeah, OK.
- 1:28:18Yeah, yeah. Not bad really for just like
- 1:28:21literally starting up again, hopefully only upwards from
- 1:28:25there. Fingers crossed.
- 1:28:28Somewhat similar for. Me on Monday of last week I
- 1:28:33actually got in for a scan. I've been saying that I was
- 1:28:37wanting to get a scan to hopefully see that this issue
- 1:28:40had been resolved. So I got the scan and I haven't
- 1:28:42actually had the results yet, so conscious not to get too carried
- 1:28:47away or excited until I get them.
- 1:28:50But yesterday I did do my first run walk, which is good because
- 1:28:55so that meant that in the week prior to that I'd had three
- 1:28:59consecutive like on off days of doing all these drills with no
- 1:29:03real like come back from it. So that was the criteria.
- 1:29:07Needed to. Take off to try my 5 by 60
- 1:29:10seconds. Run off the.
- 1:29:13Program was actually a. 5 minute walk and after like 3 minutes I
- 1:29:18was thinking what we're doing here like I'm I'm just walking
- 1:29:22for no reason but. I don't need to be.
- 1:29:27Trying to push the program whilst doing the 62nd jog, so I
- 1:29:33don't know, off 4 minutes the heart rate within the 60 seconds
- 1:29:37went straight to 140 beats. So that was good fun.
- 1:29:42But it felt fine and in the maybe like the 1st 10 to 15
- 1:29:47seconds, maybe 20 seconds after the 62nd run, I could, I don't
- 1:29:52know what it is like I think I'm just conscious and like so
- 1:29:56mentally scarred off this hail that like I begin to walk
- 1:30:01through my toes and like almost limp along on it.
- 1:30:04And then like I gradually start going hail midfoot forefront and
- 1:30:09then it feels normal again. So it's just like almost
- 1:30:12retraining the brain as well that I need to just be using my
- 1:30:15mechanics properly. But the run for the runs felt
- 1:30:18fine. And then waking up this morning,
- 1:30:20I was like a bit nervous as to how that would feel, but it
- 1:30:23feels pretty OK to be fair. So didn't do anything today and
- 1:30:28we'll do that again tomorrow before being in with Steve to
- 1:30:32see what the plan going forwards is.
- 1:30:34But obviously very slow and long road ahead.
- 1:30:39Notice for those 1 minutes that you managed.
- 1:30:41To get the pace up to about four minutes, Yeah.
- 1:30:46Do you notice that? I was.
- 1:30:49I was completely. Accidental on the multiple times
- 1:30:52accidental. On the first one.
- 1:30:56I didn't even have my screen with pace on, I was just
- 1:31:00interested to see what my heart rate would do.
- 1:31:02So then on the second one I flicked it so that I could see
- 1:31:06my pace but just ran the same effort and then I was like
- 1:31:09bloody hell, this is a bit quick.
- 1:31:11But then I figured that it was only 60 seconds, so it didn't
- 1:31:14really matter either way. This.
- 1:31:18Looks like 5 intervals on my 1st.
- 1:31:22First session. Back 5 by 400 meters.
- 1:31:27Now gone are the days where 4. 100 meters would have been
- 1:31:31anything around 60 seconds. I'll be starting around 85
- 1:31:34seconds just on that. Does that now all?
- 1:31:38Right pay to our. Fitness 50. 9 Ryan What?
- 1:31:42Shoes did you wear? Yeah, I just had the.
- 1:31:45Tennis flies. Couldn't wait to put the flames
- 1:31:51on so I was. Walking around Langley Park in
- 1:31:54them. No, I just had pair tennis
- 1:31:56season and I've done it on that as well.
- 1:32:02And did he tell you to do on grass?
- 1:32:05I suggested, would it? Be a good idea too.
- 1:32:08And he said yeah, so I think. Probably if I can.
- 1:32:12Continue doing this. I'll probably stay on grass for
- 1:32:15like maybe I don't know, a month or so and then maybe reduce the
- 1:32:19volume and go to concrete to see how it feels there.
- 1:32:24But yeah, very much. Feel like a little baby?
- 1:32:26Learn how to walk again. But it's going to be fun.
- 1:32:31The Strava community got around it too.
- 1:32:33I'll be. Happy to see you back, few
- 1:32:36comments in. There is rather.
- 1:32:38Embarrassing that I'm being congratulated for running 60
- 1:32:41seconds and walking for 5 minutes, but I appreciate it
- 1:32:45nonetheless. Is that your first post?
- 1:32:48Running posts in ages? Yeah, after.
- 1:32:52I finally. Called it and put them all on
- 1:32:55private and now I just on private a few cycles here and
- 1:32:59there. So my straw has been very dry
- 1:33:01for a good while, but yeah, first run in a.
- 1:33:06While I was unsure. Whether to even like, you know,
- 1:33:08when you start an activity because I knew I was running one
- 1:33:11minute, walking four or five minutes.
- 1:33:13I was thinking, do I even bloody record this as a run or a walk?
- 1:33:20Because like when when you think about it.
- 1:33:22Of that total volume, I don't know what it comes up.
- 1:33:25I can't believe analyzing this so much. 2K or something, over
- 1:33:29half of that I'm actually walking for.
- 1:33:31So it's going to show on my graph that I've ran 2K or
- 1:33:36something this week, but I've actually ran 1K.
- 1:33:41Give it what have I just said? Do you think it wasn't that
- 1:33:47long? Ago.
- 1:33:48We'll talk about that. 401K loop in the heels and you know, just
- 1:33:52another training day. Here we are, Owens sat a like.
- 1:33:57Peak of his. Career listening to me talk
- 1:33:59about whether of RAM 1K or walk 2K.
- 1:34:06It's good, It's good. Perspective, perspective.
- 1:34:09Yeah, yeah, we need contrast. What not to do?
- 1:34:13And it's a. 7K. Race and I don't Spencer
- 1:34:17actually won it. He won it in 1955 and he bet
- 1:34:21your man like Stefan Nielsen, which is a pretty nice scalp.
- 1:34:26The female was won by Armenia Mutong.
- 1:34:30I don't know who she is in 2244 and I don't sense there isn't
- 1:34:36down to run the cross. No, no he's not.
- 1:34:42Do you have access to those results?
- 1:34:44Yeah, yeah, you're looking at them now is.
- 1:34:46Jake Smith on. There Jake Smith is.
- 1:34:50So I can only. Find this the 15K might be on
- 1:34:53today, but Eve you've even looked at their Instagram.
- 1:34:56It looks savage it's like at night and like there's mad
- 1:34:59crowds and there's like mad flashing lights and stuff afford
- 1:35:04it. He is here now.
- 1:35:06Yeah, because I've seen on. Jake Strava the other day he was
- 1:35:09saying he was doing a race and he posted this two times from
- 1:35:12previous years and they were like 45 minutes then.
- 1:35:16He's now run this morning in niche McGann.
- 1:35:20Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But only as.
- 1:35:22Warm up activities on there, right?
- 1:35:24Now so I sent you. The Instagram page.
- 1:35:28It's probably it's on the 15 and 16, so I'm going to take a wild
- 1:35:31guess that the longer races on today.
- 1:35:34But yeah, it's weird that Adam Spencer would have well,
- 1:35:38obviously Nike athlete, Nike event probably would have got a
- 1:35:41bit of money for running it. But yeah, just he's fit.
- 1:35:47Oh, the the results are out because it's got.
- 1:35:50That Mike Foppen, young to him, the Dutch track, he's always
- 1:35:54run. Yeah, he always runs it.
- 1:35:56He ran a Netherlands. Record.
- 1:35:58For 4242, I'm not sure whether that means he's won the race or
- 1:36:02not. Was that this year?
- 1:36:04Yeah, the post. 19 minutes ago. Well, he won it first to.
- 1:36:11Finish. He used.
- 1:36:14To train with your man Jimmy Grezier.
- 1:36:18Yeah, that was that. No, he didn't.
- 1:36:21Win the race the the winner was Victor Capurito around 4142.
- 1:36:29Let's try and pull these up so we can see where.
- 1:36:32Jake finished. Whilst we're here, it looks
- 1:36:36savages just. Running out in the country?
- 1:36:39In in Netherlands I reckon. I mean, I've only ever been to.
- 1:36:45Amsterdam, I think in the Netherlands, and that's not a
- 1:36:48scenic, but Netherlands in general, the country is like
- 1:36:53incredibly scenic and like got sick countryside.
- 1:36:57Isn't it even Amsterdam? Like the canals, the cycling?
- 1:37:00Culture used guys would love it and everyone has a bike and but
- 1:37:06yeah it's just like really picturesque and yeah it's cool I
- 1:37:11can't the results aren't up on online it's.
- 1:37:17Annoying. Oh.
- 1:37:19Well, we'll have to make do with that for the results.
- 1:37:24Enjoying the YouTube Diaries. Yeah, I can.
- 1:37:30The topic No no, the channel for this week is very new.
- 1:37:40The video is about 6 hours old enough and it came to our
- 1:37:47attention not long before recording.
- 1:37:50So how many views is it on now? Think of about 1000 odd.
- 1:37:55Views. OK.
- 1:37:58Watch it grow. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:38:01So. The athlete is Genevieve Gregson
- 1:38:05OR Genevieve Flacaz that used to be known as but she is an
- 1:38:10Australian four time marathoner and mentions in the start of her
- 1:38:16video that she's shooting for five.
- 1:38:18So her partner's Ryan Gregson. So would be familiar F familiar
- 1:38:23name, but they're like a bit of a powerhouse couple in
- 1:38:26Australian distance running. So yeah, a new very new channel
- 1:38:31to YouTube. I didn't know that that was in
- 1:38:34the works. Is Jen the. 3K.
- 1:38:37Steeplechase national record still.
- 1:38:39I think so, Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:38:42So that was her pedigree is on the.
- 1:38:44Track and she's obviously transitioned to the marathon
- 1:38:47pretty successfully. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:38:49So I think. Because didn't she famously fall
- 1:38:53in one of the steeplechases and shadow her Achilles?
- 1:38:57And then yeah had a significant layoff, but then yeah
- 1:39:03successfully returned to the roads has made the women's
- 1:39:07marathon team ran was it 222 at Valencia and his training for
- 1:39:12Valencia currently along with a host of others.
- 1:39:16But I think of would be a great YouTube channel for various
- 1:39:20reasons. But she's also a mum and
- 1:39:23recently a mum for the second times already shared some
- 1:39:27insight in terms of juggling her personal her what would be a
- 1:39:31very busy personal life, along with raising two young kids and
- 1:39:36has aspirations to make another Olympic team.
- 1:39:39And no doubt probably has an eye on running, you know, a quicker
- 1:39:42time very soon in the marathon, which would be around that sort
- 1:39:46of Australian record time. So would be a very interesting
- 1:39:50channel to follow. Cool insight to into to them
- 1:39:53because you you hear about them a lot, but you probably don't
- 1:39:56get necessarily as much of A backstage pass as what you would
- 1:39:59get on their YouTube channel. So yeah, it should be very
- 1:40:02interesting. Interesting watch.
- 1:40:04I think they have a good training group up in in Brisbane
- 1:40:08and good family network that helps them do what they do.
- 1:40:10And yeah, it should be a good follow when you.
- 1:40:15Hear the interviews of some of. These women who've had kids and
- 1:40:20come back to race at the top level, do you notice that like
- 1:40:23kind of a lot of the intrigue from listeners Slash general
- 1:40:29population slash like recreational or everyday runners
- 1:40:33is around like how they have transitioned?
- 1:40:37Basically. From pregnancy and given birth
- 1:40:39in back into like elite sports and at the top level.
- 1:40:43I think it's because often people will look at professional
- 1:40:47athletes and can't relate because they just can't quite
- 1:40:51compute like how you could physically be that good at
- 1:40:54running. And then when someone has a baby
- 1:40:59and then the normal everyday person is able to relate because
- 1:41:04they're like, well, I'm a mum too.
- 1:41:06And then they just find it completely incomprehensible and
- 1:41:09like so admirable how they then return to running at that sort
- 1:41:12of level. So yeah, it'll be interesting
- 1:41:16and cool to get those insights as well because she's obviously
- 1:41:18very fresh off the back of the second child, like you say.
- 1:41:23Yeah. And I think like.
- 1:41:26The physical changes that a woman's body goes through in
- 1:41:29terms of during the pregnancy and then posts like is, is the
- 1:41:35physical tolls huge and the ability and, and what you need
- 1:41:38to do to get your body right is so hard and running so
- 1:41:41unforgiving when you're physically fit and well, let
- 1:41:45alone let alone what you have to go through with that.
- 1:41:49And then you're potentially juggling breastfeeding and the
- 1:41:51impact on that. And like red S comes into play.
- 1:41:54Like I'm pretty sure when houses breastfeeding the twins, I think
- 1:41:57we're told like it's like 500 calories per day per child
- 1:42:01perhaps. And so like you've got to be so
- 1:42:03careful in terms of looking after yourself.
- 1:42:06On top of that, you're not getting great sleep because your
- 1:42:09baby's probably up during the night.
- 1:42:10So then how they're managing to look after themselves and their
- 1:42:13new, you know, their young children and then find the
- 1:42:16energy to train on top of that. And their level, their training
- 1:42:19at is phenomenal. So yeah, it's they're they're
- 1:42:24pretty amazing people. So it's be a really good, good
- 1:42:28story to follow. Yeah, you're right.
- 1:42:31Because it's not. Just one parent.
- 1:42:33Who's doing this? It's both parents.
- 1:42:36And they both seems to be like so selfless in the way that they
- 1:42:39kind of like, help each other out and manage to keep the
- 1:42:42training taking over. Yeah.
- 1:42:44And I think it gets. It definitely gets harder, like
- 1:42:48after you've had one. So you've got a toddler who has
- 1:42:52always had all of your attention and still to a degree expects
- 1:42:56that, and they still got their own needs to meet and then
- 1:42:59you've got this newborn that. Requires a lot of usage.
- 1:43:01During the night and then you're basically tired from dealing
- 1:43:04with them. But then you can't get that
- 1:43:06reprieve when your newborns having a sleep during the day
- 1:43:08because the toddler just wants to, you know, take on the world.
- 1:43:12So it'd be very tricky time. So pretty, very impressive that
- 1:43:15they're juggling it. And it would be, yeah.
- 1:43:17Good YouTube channel to follow I'm sure.
- 1:43:21Thank you boys. I don't.
- 1:43:23Think I've got a double. Trouble.
- 1:43:25Surprisingly, maybe the 60 seconds I have a double trouble.
- 1:43:28Put me up. Go on.
- 1:43:29Used to sitting on the. Fence last.
- 1:43:31Week guys that. Didn't work.
- 1:43:35What was? The double trouble are the.
- 1:43:36PBS in frickin in was it? Yeah, used to sitting on fence.
- 1:43:45I don't see a problem. With that at all, I think
- 1:43:48sometimes I just disagreed. I thought I didn't.
- 1:43:51Agreed. No, no, that was.
- 1:43:54Ryan. Ryan Ferret Ryan sitting on the
- 1:43:56fence. Ryan was squarely on the fence
- 1:43:58is. Flipping and flopping.
- 1:44:00I'm like, I can't agree with it. I've got my PVS in my Instagram
- 1:44:05pie. I said I'd rather put that in
- 1:44:08than some of my personal stuff about my kids.
- 1:44:11Like I think it's. I think it's handy like
- 1:44:14especially if you're like, I know you're similar across the
- 1:44:16page and they're a runner and like you want to sort of see
- 1:44:19what they've run. If they actually have the there
- 1:44:22are times in their Instagram bio, which just saves a lot of
- 1:44:24time of trying to actually go digging looking for now, it's
- 1:44:28very rarely that you do that, but still, I don't I think
- 1:44:30there's nothing wrong with it whatsoever.
- 1:44:32You strive at times, or you, you chip.
- 1:44:34Times. Hey, guys.
- 1:44:37Going to say yeah I love that page so.
- 1:44:40Much. That anyway.
- 1:44:42They're blocking. Them though we've had a few
- 1:44:45people messaging. Privately in with some
- 1:44:47suggestions. So thank you to those that have
- 1:44:50provided them. Yeah.
- 1:44:54Yes, like that. That's the only thing we're.
- 1:44:56Having it in your Instagram bio, you, you're, you're trusting
- 1:45:00that said person is making a reasonable claim because you're
- 1:45:03not really going to then go and cross check and verify the claim
- 1:45:08or you're obviously just taking it as face value and that the
- 1:45:10person is trustworthy. But I don't know, I just have.
- 1:45:15To go and cross. Reference.
- 1:45:16Yours I don't get. Why people actually?
- 1:45:21I don't get why people would. Put the faster times.
- 1:45:23In like if you actually haven't run them like I, I nearly feel
- 1:45:28guilty. If I take like.
- 1:45:29That's a bicarb that like, is that naturally me running?
- 1:45:34Like in a way it's sort of in a way it is sort of doping.
- 1:45:38I don't know, it's like because it's actually not you, you
- 1:45:43missing it. Big car, big car.
- 1:45:46What, like I'd feel guilty putting up the.
- 1:45:49Time that you didn't run and I will cut that crop that.
- 1:45:56No, I agree with you though, because like.
- 1:45:58In some track races where you're technically allowed to wear
- 1:46:01super shoes because you're not bound by the like World
- 1:46:03Athletics rulings, I would still never race of 5K and a pair of
- 1:46:08super shoes on the tracks. I'd feel like it would be an
- 1:46:10illegitimate time because if you're a pro then it wouldn't.
- 1:46:14You can't do it so why should I? I don't think you're doping if
- 1:46:17you're taking anything. That's not against the rules.
- 1:46:20This is my, you know, that's where I sit with it.
- 1:46:25Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:46:25And like. By car is permissible like.
- 1:46:28The rules are the rules. You, you, you know, play the
- 1:46:32rules as hard as you can as long as you stay within them.
- 1:46:36Yeah, but yeah, I don't get people like putting in.
- 1:46:38Tax Man speaking under. Strava times and when they've
- 1:46:44run like 2. 3 minutes and it's always the case where they're
- 1:46:48really just under or just over like a minute like in it's yeah,
- 1:46:54have you have you noticed they all seem.
- 1:46:58Pardon. Are you thinking it's a line?
- 1:47:00No, no. OK.
- 1:47:04Have you noticed they all seem to be hybrid rock stars?
- 1:47:08Yeah. They just don't get it.
- 1:47:11I. Feel like it's a group that.
- 1:47:12Don't get it? Yeah, but fair.
- 1:47:16Play to the. OPTMU or whatever that Instagram
- 1:47:20page is calling them out. That's what I was trying to
- 1:47:23find. I think they just relate.
- 1:47:24They just posted something, didn't they?
- 1:47:27The official. Marathon time Integrity unit,
- 1:47:30Yeah. 11 thought I had on it. Was it's like, say, if you've
- 1:47:36done it and you've done it deliberately, if you're Strava
- 1:47:39time, because this is the thing, like so many of these people who
- 1:47:42are new to running, they genuinely think that Strava time
- 1:47:46is your time. And like in the caption, they'll
- 1:47:50write Strava time, whatever chip time, as if like the Strava time
- 1:47:55has any sort of relevance. But anyway, imagine you did and
- 1:48:01you claimed you Strava time knowingly, that you were like
- 1:48:04cheating a little bit. Say for example, Strava's 259
- 1:48:07and your chip time was 301, like hard lines.
- 1:48:11And you claim your 2:59. And then the next time you
- 1:48:14actually come to run a marathon, you legitimately run 259.
- 1:48:19But maybe it's like 259 fifty. So it was a little bit slower
- 1:48:24than the Strava time that you'd previously claimed.
- 1:48:28Now, in reality, you have a new PB as per the official results.
- 1:48:34But as per the time that you've claimed previously, you can't
- 1:48:38actually say you've run a PB because you've already lied to
- 1:48:42say that you've run faster. So how empty must that feel?
- 1:48:47Yeah, but. I think they're just a different
- 1:48:48breed than described. Like they don't get, they just
- 1:48:51don't get it. They do not get it.
- 1:48:54Fucking hell, they. They released a post.
- 1:48:59Today IMTIU. Regulation 7. .1 Did you say
- 1:49:04that is a stop and watch? Yeah, Jack Rayner should be
- 1:49:08disqualified under Regulation 7.1.
- 1:49:13It's watch stopping stoppage protocols during races and it
- 1:49:17had it has 33 permitted reasons, which is medically evacuated,
- 1:49:21detained by police and then injury, illness related DNF.
- 1:49:25They're the only times you get to stop your watch during a
- 1:49:27race, and then it's got a whole suite of reasons why you can't.
- 1:49:33Don't read out the. List.
- 1:49:34It's so funny. Toilet break Photo Video.
- 1:49:37Content opportunity Aid station stop auto pause function tie
- 1:49:41shoelace remove stone from your shoe cramp walk break watch says
- 1:49:46you've reached 42.2 kilometers to reset yeah to reset the the
- 1:49:51lap to change Spotify playlist Chris kiss your partner oh so
- 1:49:56good I've actually. Committed to two of.
- 1:49:59Those in a race. If I'm honest, yeah.
- 1:50:02But you haven't claimed. Illegitimate time?
- 1:50:05What ones have you done? I stopped my I missed a drink.
- 1:50:08At Sydney and I stopped my watch.
- 1:50:10I don't know why, but when I ran back, I just have it.
- 1:50:14And then one of the 50K races I had a low break and I stopped it
- 1:50:17during that. But again, I don't know why I
- 1:50:20did it, but I wouldn't take kind of time, that's for sure.
- 1:50:24That'll be like, that'll be like Jack because.
- 1:50:26On that, did you see they put the video up and they've done a
- 1:50:29poll like has he done a breach here, yes or no?
- 1:50:32Because it was a video of him pausing his watch.
- 1:50:35It's just like habit or instinct, like if you stop to
- 1:50:38split it or pause it or whatever.
- 1:50:40Because obviously he's bloody won the race, so he's not trying
- 1:50:43to fool anyone with his time. Yeah.
- 1:50:46But I did feel vindicated that when I went to the Portalu in
- 1:50:50Ballarat that I split it off. Yeah.
- 1:50:55Otherwise. Just that.
- 1:50:56Sat there having a shit. Thinking about seconds ticking
- 1:50:58away. Yeah, keen to follow that page
- 1:51:05I'm sure. It'll continue to find offenders
- 1:51:08and they seem to be find them repeat offenders as well.
- 1:51:10Or if they get a tip off for one person, they then dig into like
- 1:51:17a few more of their past results that have like been accepted by
- 1:51:21the community and they find that they've they've done it 5 or 6
- 1:51:24times prior. It's so good they're they're.
- 1:51:27Stories. Is that where you're watching
- 1:51:29it? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:51:32There's Oh, there was. A guy last week.
- 1:51:35And he was like, you know, because the way they comment,
- 1:51:38it's so formal, almost like you're being given a fine or
- 1:51:41something. This replied.
- 1:51:44Like, I can't tell if this is serious or not, but like, it's
- 1:51:48not that deep or something. This this one.
- 1:51:53This post on their story, It's gone.
- 1:51:55Third Breach. We've been, we've been blocked
- 1:51:58by the suspect and therefore unable to provide a written
- 1:52:01infringement notice directly to the suspect on this occasion and
- 1:52:05then they just sign off IMTIU. It's so good.
- 1:52:11They're so funny. Whoever.
- 1:52:15Has this too much time in their hands though they.
- 1:52:17Have way too much time on their hand.
- 1:52:19It's it's so good. And just their comments.
- 1:52:22On the like, being under official investigation, they
- 1:52:24comment like on the person's post, you know?
- 1:52:28What the good thing is it? Separates the actual runners
- 1:52:32from like the pretenders, like anyone who is a legit runner,
- 1:52:36and like kind of all unspokenly on the.
- 1:52:41Same page. Like you just clearly identified
- 1:52:44because everyone's very much in the camp of OEM TIU and then the
- 1:52:51pretenders and the Klingons are like confused or offended that
- 1:52:56they're being called out. And it's just so good to see.
- 1:52:59Yeah, creating. Awareness.
- 1:53:03I didn't realize how like. People did that though.
- 1:53:06There's so many people, all the. Time.
- 1:53:08Yeah, crazy, I realized. That we skipped past the.
- 1:53:14Fred Kelly news item dummies. Just quickly play it because
- 1:53:18it's quite controversial. We could end on a on a bang.
- 1:53:22So for those who don't know, Fred Kelly, American sprinter,
- 1:53:27100 meters, 200 meters guy, as he recently, he's the one who's
- 1:53:31gone to the enhanced games. So now he's just dropping all
- 1:53:34these bombshells like coming out with wild accusations, server
- 1:53:40contacts. I'm going to play it down the
- 1:53:42mic. Hopefully it doesn't bear star
- 1:53:45eardrums like it did when we tested it.
- 1:53:47This is Fred Kelly speaking on a podcast about, well, you get
- 1:53:52what? It's about popping up at
- 1:53:54restaurants to test us. People popping up at airport to
- 1:53:56test us. Damn.
- 1:53:59Yeah I know. It's basically like we in a
- 1:54:01plantation. Wow.
- 1:54:04And pick the outside. World don't know what's.
- 1:54:05Actually going on because you got people that actually own the
- 1:54:08stuff but never getting caught because they're getting paid
- 1:54:10off. You got to add the cases right
- 1:54:13now in track and field that you SODA and WADA is not doing
- 1:54:17nothing about because they're getting paid off.
- 1:54:25Damn, That's a pretty strong accusation, friend.
- 1:54:27There's no accident. It's the best is the facts,
- 1:54:30simple as that. And they know it.
- 1:54:33They got cases going on right now.
- 1:54:35You can come and test me any day of the week and I'm not
- 1:54:38tripping. I can show you my, my, my, you
- 1:54:42know, we guess every time we do a drug test, the stuff come to
- 1:54:45my phone, negative, negative, negative, negative.
- 1:54:53It's not tripping, but. Well, what are your thoughts?
- 1:54:59You go. Well, first of all, this comes
- 1:55:00on the back of. The US sprinter who got silver
- 1:55:07in the 100 meters. But he was basically, it didn't
- 1:55:11come out that he was serving a ban.
- 1:55:13It was kept hush hush, wasn't it?
- 1:55:16What's his name? Marvin or Macy or Marvin Bracy?
- 1:55:20Yeah. Close Tracy Williams.
- 1:55:22Yeah, that kid. And.
- 1:55:25But yeah, look, yeah. So they got him based.
- 1:55:29On whistleblowing. Yeah, his coach, actually.
- 1:55:34Ratted on him. Yeah, oh man, and his.
- 1:55:40Coat so he. Only moved to the coach.
- 1:55:42He told the coach that what he was doing and then the coach
- 1:55:45like ratted on him now and they were then saying does this like
- 1:55:50was it the coach? Now there's.
- 1:55:52Like a thing. Where was the coach saving his
- 1:55:54ass by reporting him or like, is there other people in the group
- 1:55:57doping now? Yeah, it's just a mess.
- 1:56:02Investigators found Bracy Williams.
- 1:56:04Initially tried to tamper with the process before later
- 1:56:07admitting guilt and cooperating. He also received a separate 24
- 1:56:11month sanction for three whereabouts failures between
- 1:56:13August and June 24. All results since the first of
- 1:56:18all was 23 disqualified. But yeah, the the mad thing is
- 1:56:21that it takes whistleblowing to actually catch these people who
- 1:56:25are actually out there cheating and presumably passing tests.
- 1:56:29And then the Fred Kelly thing, that's just a whole nother level
- 1:56:32if true. Like the fact that people can
- 1:56:36cheat and get away with it is one thing, but then if they're
- 1:56:40being caught and able to pay off the people who are supposed to
- 1:56:43be upholding the rules and stuff, then the the whole
- 1:56:46thing's just a shambles and an embarrassment really, isn't it?
- 1:56:51But you're, you've seen it. What happened with your own
- 1:56:53Well? Taji, the Ethiopian 1500 meter
- 1:56:56girl, like Ethiopia, we're going to send her only for that while
- 1:57:01I jumped in and stepped in. They're like, no, like it's it's
- 1:57:05I'd say it's crazy amount of politics and like it's rotten in
- 1:57:08Kenya, Ethiopia, it's just as bad ever.
- 1:57:10I'd say it's just as bad ever else.
- 1:57:13Like I say, America. Is totally wrong.
- 1:57:15It's just they're better at doping.
- 1:57:17See. Theory that's strong.
- 1:57:19Accusations on Strong Yeah, I. Still don't.
- 1:57:22Fred Curly had a load of. Whereabouts, Failure.
- 1:57:23So I still don't trust him either.
- 1:57:25Yeah, like it's been spoken about before.
- 1:57:27But if you were a professional athlete, what you were is it
- 1:57:30like 3 times you have to book the process.
- 1:57:35Of basically to get a whereabouts.
- 1:57:36Failure. Like how if you missed one,
- 1:57:38could you allow the second and third to occur and like it's
- 1:57:41your job at the end of day this. Is your job you have nothing
- 1:57:44else on like it's your job to be in this place.
- 1:57:47When you say you're in this place, like it just yeah, it
- 1:57:50makes. No sense whatsoever.
- 1:57:52That he missed three, Like 1? Fair enough.
- 1:57:55Two. You're pushing at 3.
- 1:57:56It's a joke. Get lost.
- 1:58:00Or then if you were like denying it, you would.
- 1:58:02Be chasing them up with emails and phone calls like oh sorry I
- 1:58:05wasn't there like plans changed I'm here like come tomorrow.
- 1:58:09And if they didn't then I would be fucking posting it all over
- 1:58:13my Instagram like look please believe me I'm clean.
- 1:58:16I was begging them to come back like it's your job, like you're
- 1:58:19in the. Privileged position where you
- 1:58:21literally run for a living like that would be like you not
- 1:58:24showing what's work tomorrow would happen, Yeah.
- 1:58:28No, it doesn't happen. And if it is, you give a real.
- 1:58:31Explanation. Like it's, yeah, I just don't
- 1:58:33like it at all. Yeah, scary if the.
- 1:58:41Water are being paid off like. Do they just want us talking
- 1:58:47about it? Create stories and ramp up
- 1:58:51attention. Surely not that deep like but it
- 1:58:54would be good if some of these people going.
- 1:58:56To the. Enhanced Games gave insight into
- 1:58:58what's actually going on because I suspect they know quite a bit
- 1:59:02and they're then in a position to be able to.
- 1:59:04Do so because they're openly doing it.
- 1:59:08Fuck. Maybe that'd be in the.
- 1:59:10Next target interview. Talk looks get Fred Curly on.
- 1:59:20He ain't tripping, brat. The the host's quite funny.
- 1:59:26Did you hear that? He's like, there's some wild
- 1:59:29accusation for it. Oh, we'll just change it now.
- 1:59:34Let's. Let's wrap it up.
- 1:59:36Yeah, go on. That's.
- 1:59:38M Yeah. Touch it next week.
- 1:59:40Yeah, Good luck with the race. Thank you very much.
- 1:59:44Good luck mate. People, even the the.
- 1:59:47Referral of and the. Ratings and stuff to the end, so
- 1:59:49people have probably already turned off now, but Spotify did
- 1:59:53tell me the other day that podcasts with listeners similar
- 1:59:57to ours usually have X amount more followers.
- 2:00:00So I don't know what it means. But yeah, I think if you follow
- 2:00:04the podcast then you get a notification when we release a
- 2:00:07new one rather than having to search it.
- 2:00:10Which I've lazily been guilty of myself and I actually don't
- 2:00:13understand why you don't. I don't press follow button and
- 2:00:17I go on there week in week out and search the podcast rather
- 2:00:20than just having it in front of me.
- 2:00:21But there you go. I don't hold the grudge against
- 2:00:24you if you don't, but it might just be a bit easier for you.
- 2:00:28Thanks guys, good luck. See you.
