- 0:00I'm Brandon. And I'm Jesse, we're cannabis.
- 0:02School having cannabis infuse conversations.
- 0:05With everyday people. Cannabis companies.
- 0:08Celebrities. And your mom?
- 0:10Welcome. To the sesh.
- 0:12It's been weird after I restructured my resume and have
- 0:16been sending it out, I had a guy reach out to me for an
- 0:20interview. He was like hey I found your
- 0:22resume and want an interview. I had two or three others that
- 0:26scheduled interviews. Three others.
- 0:28Dude, that's amazing. And this is, and then I have one
- 0:31that this will be my third interview with this company.
- 0:34So whenever I hear back from them, so.
- 0:36Yeah, that's so cool, man. That's so cool.
- 0:39I love that. It feels weird because I just
- 0:41haven't really fully applied myself.
- 0:44Well, no, neither of us that have wanted to because we wanted
- 0:47something else to happen and we wanted it to be something that
- 0:50we own, but more importantly that we're not held responsible
- 0:53from someone else. But you know, with that time,
- 0:56one thing that I felt with the job that I've really enjoyed,
- 0:59there's aspects I really don't like.
- 1:01But at the same time, it's, it's not that I'm fulfilling my
- 1:06purpose, it's that others are rely upon me in order for the
- 1:09success to be there. And so it makes me feel
- 1:12responsible. It makes me feel contributory.
- 1:16It doesn't make me feel like I'm just after a dollar.
- 1:18And you know, and that's what I like about doing what I'm doing
- 1:21now, not to say that that's what I'm always going to do.
- 1:23I mean, it's fucking hard. It's really difficult.
- 1:26It's it's not something that I've ever done before.
- 1:31It has been the most challenging, but it also, I mean
- 1:34like how much I had to learn in a short period of time and then
- 1:38still learning and then feel like I don't know what I'm
- 1:41talking about. And then somebody says something
- 1:43and I go, I'm like, holy shit, like where did that come from?
- 1:47But it's, it feels good in, in some ways.
- 1:49I mean, other ways I'm like, I don't enjoy my commute.
- 1:53I don't enjoy that I have to be in an office all the time.
- 1:56And I'm pushing them to let me go out and they're being cool
- 1:59about it. But at the same time it's, I
- 2:02don't know. I just feel like it's it's a
- 2:04good thing if I was back doing my fast knowing what I know now.
- 2:08Nope. Yeah, no, I I think it would be
- 2:11really good. And I've been excited about it.
- 2:13And I realized that it also gives me a level of distance
- 2:16from all of the grunt work of the show.
- 2:20Yeah. So I can literally just record
- 2:22shit, find guests. And I talked to Finn even.
- 2:25And I was like, you know, if I'm working, I'm happy to pay you to
- 2:29edit to create social media videos like from random shit,
- 2:34pull them from the show and script me content and I will
- 2:38record it and send you videos and you can edit them and post
- 2:41them. Well, that's the thing I was
- 2:42thinking about dude recently because I was like, I love that
- 2:45idea. I think that's awesome.
- 2:46Especially, you know, giving Finn the opportunity to edit and
- 2:50stuff like that would be great, great skill for them to have and
- 2:55for, for inner value to be there because we want to accomplish
- 2:59things. It's not, we don't feel response
- 3:01where it's our job. We just want to accomplish
- 3:03things. It feels good.
- 3:04And I, I, I think that's awesome. 1 And, and in the other
- 3:08part is, is that on the social media?
- 3:10I was reading this book called How to start a Cult.
- 3:13I know right when I told her you'd laugh and I laughed too
- 3:16when I saw it and I'm like, alright.
- 3:17And I started going into it and it was great.
- 3:19And I was like an idea. I was like, well, I know we
- 3:22could do social media, but the one thing that has been a big
- 3:25resurgence is groups. And I thought, how cool would it
- 3:28be if our audience could just post on our our group page and
- 3:34not just memes, but where we can like every once.
- 3:37I was thinking that could be really cool for us to create
- 3:39some like really like authentic content is to just every once in
- 3:43a while, just step out in our backyard, set up our by our our
- 3:47tripod and have a conversation every once in a while.
- 3:50We plan it out, like going do a live like once a week or
- 3:54something just because and to just look at everybody's posts
- 3:58and then going now let's talk about that.
- 4:00That's crazy. And then we just go back and
- 4:01forth and have fun set up where we're standing right here.
- 4:04We move the couch, we just have the background and we have that.
- 4:08We just smoke joints and talk to everybody, right, And reflect on
- 4:11our day because that's the one thing that, you know, I've
- 4:14realized about our podcast is that what draws people in is not
- 4:17necessarily just say educational content is that they come here
- 4:21because they're our friends. And I feel like if if we did
- 4:25that, instead of trying so hard to come up with content, we just
- 4:29do that. And now the responsibility
- 4:31doesn't rely upon you all the time to make sure that's going
- 4:33up. I would rather be more excited.
- 4:36Like we keep that going on. And yes, I think it'd be great.
- 4:39Not only that, but for Finn to find funny content and we just
- 4:43find funny videos and say I send you funny shit all the time
- 4:46because I think it'd be fun. The the Facebook and the
- 4:48Instagram. Like that's satire.
- 4:51Yeah, it makes me. Giggle.
- 4:53I just haven't been. No, I know.
- 4:55No, it's hard because it's like, well, for.
- 4:58What wanted to be on social at. All.
- 5:00No, I don't either. Even just checking it, I
- 5:04literally jump on now and it's like has anyone sent me anything
- 5:07that I should watch? OK, cool, I've done that.
- 5:10And then I close it. Yeah.
- 5:12I, I, I haven't anything. Well, you Emily Finn, like, but
- 5:18that's, that's it. And then Tik Tok's way less
- 5:21because I'm like, I fucking hate it.
- 5:23And then I open it and it's like, oh, Emily sent me 50
- 5:25videos and I have to go through all of that shit.
- 5:28Like, Oh my God, there's so many of these and half of them aren't
- 5:31even one she wants me to watch. They're just ones that she's
- 5:33saving for later by sending it to me like.
- 5:37That's exactly what. But the thing too, though, I, I
- 5:40think about is that what's the purpose of social media?
- 5:43Like at the beginning was connection.
- 5:46Yeah. And I thought about them like,
- 5:48you know what, it'd be cool to have a place where we could just
- 5:50kind of like we can open up about our feelings every once in
- 5:53a while or what's ever on our mind or a question or a cool
- 5:56thing we saw. And we're talking because
- 5:58that's, that's what friends do, man.
- 6:00Like I think about like, I call you randomly when good things
- 6:03happen. I don't call you when the bad
- 6:04things always happen, right. And I, I let you know, like it
- 6:07sucks and stuff like that. Like we address what's happening
- 6:10in our life and we're always like, do you need anything?
- 6:13You want me to come over? You need help?
- 6:15Didn't even be there. Yeah.
- 6:17Yeah. You know, it's like I was like
- 6:19thinking about it just recently. I've got an eye appointment
- 6:21coming up and I know it's not good for me to drive after that
- 6:25one. So I was like, I need to find
- 6:26out if Brandon can give me, just come with me and just, you know,
- 6:30make sure that I can get home safely.
- 6:32Like just come meet at my place and we'll drive my little car up
- 6:36'cause it was I, I've done it twice now and I'm not, it's not
- 6:41recommended. It freaked me the fuck out.
- 6:43And I mean, I got home safe. Terrifying.
- 6:46But you know, it's things like that, like, you know, when I
- 6:48think about it, you're, you're not the first person that comes
- 6:51to my mind when I need help. He's the first person that comes
- 6:54to my mind when I accomplish something or something cool came
- 6:57across or I had a funny thing happen or I saw a nuts thing or,
- 7:02or or just whatever. Because it's that's the cool
- 7:04part is that you want to connect with people.
- 7:07And I think that by creating a community, I was thinking about
- 7:10greener friends and greener friends Facebook community so it
- 7:14doesn't get flagged, but that I don't know.
- 7:17What do you guys think You'll hear this episode?
- 7:19Maybe we've already started it, but I think 1 it would be a
- 7:22great pressure off of you and for me to be more contributory
- 7:27cause for me the it's the authenticity that's matters more
- 7:31and. Yeah, I, I just.
- 7:33It's hard to do where you make up something and try and act it
- 7:36out. You know what?
- 7:37I'm like, I, I'm, I love just talking to people.
- 7:39Yeah, I love having community. That part is great
- 7:43conversations. Fucking love that.
- 7:45But it's the random shit that it's like, OK, and how many of
- 7:48those in a week? OK, How many of those in a
- 7:50month? OK, like just.
- 7:52It'd be cool just to set up your set up your, your, your tripod
- 7:56or just have your phone right there and just have a question
- 7:59or something like that. It'd be cool for our community
- 8:01to do that. Like, hey, I got a question
- 8:03about this guys. Like what do you think about
- 8:05this? Or they can share a strain that
- 8:07they've tried. I wish Patreon had the live
- 8:10because when I looked it only goes through YouTube or
- 8:14something else like some other platform and it didn't work the
- 8:18way I was hoping to. I just need to look and see.
- 8:20Maybe we do that with the Patreon members is that we do
- 8:23video call with them once a month and they can give some
- 8:26suggestions and things like that.
- 8:28Strange suggestions or something like that that we could possibly
- 8:30get our hands on, or even where they kind of.
- 8:34Community sesh. Yeah, our community sesh, we go
- 8:36over there it's like 30-40 minutes We we all talk remotely.
- 8:41We, we have a good time and, you know, we leave the discussion
- 8:45open to like constant idea because I think it's, it's a
- 8:48bigger pressure too, where we've got our content up to this
- 8:51point, right? The, the, the show rolls the way
- 8:54it rolls. But it's through a lot of trial
- 8:57and error. And now we feel very comfortable
- 9:00with our content flow on the on the podcast.
- 9:02And it'd be great more so if Ben could just grab clips that they
- 9:07thought was awesome. Yeah.
- 9:09That's all I figured too, is there's all of the digital
- 9:13library on the hard drives that it's like, OK, you can go
- 9:16through and just create them from this.
- 9:18Well dude, find whatever it is because I'm like, oh, there's
- 9:20endless there. I I've got other things going on
- 9:23that are bringing funds in, so let me know and we'll split
- 9:26that. Yeah, I just, I figure as soon
- 9:28as I'm working here, which has been so weird to be.
- 9:32Looking for a job? Looking for a job actively
- 9:34rebuilding my resume many times and like, that's awesome.
- 9:38Lying all the time going all right, yeah, I'm doing 1020 jobs
- 9:41in a day that I'm applying for and going through these ones
- 9:45really looking at the company and is this something I would
- 9:48do? Is this like I don't want a
- 9:50three month, 6 month place, you know, I don't want a job that
- 9:54it's like, hey, this is just for now.
- 9:55I'd rather dedicate years too and go all right, well here's
- 10:00where it's at. What can we like the show this
- 10:03is 6 years in, OK, well, six years from there, Like what
- 10:07could we have done in six years and what could we do in six
- 10:10years or what can I do in 10 years?
- 10:12Like, yeah, what does that look like in a trajectory versus
- 10:16going what can I do in a week? What can I do in 30 days, like?
- 10:19Well, and that's usually what it is like the entrepreneurial life
- 10:21is, you know, you eat what you kill.
- 10:23And I think what that does is it builds a lot of character for
- 10:27you, for the, the work world. The one thing I have learned,
- 10:31it's been it's been a tough transition.
- 10:33Going back. Yeah, from being entrepreneurial
- 10:36to working for a company. And I'm actually better at
- 10:40following or or fulfilling what's been expected of me
- 10:44because I don't get so in my head like, oh, I can do it
- 10:47better. But I'm like, OK, look, I'm
- 10:50you're going to show me. I know the path of least
- 10:52resistance. I know what it feel like to be
- 10:54in your position. I know what it feels like to be
- 10:56in your position. I'm just going to be cool about
- 10:58it. And you look, yeah, you need me
- 10:59to do that. And I found a lot of weaknesses
- 11:01in my and how I do it, But it's, it's helped me to be better and
- 11:05it's helping to be more open minded.
- 11:07So, you know, I, I always look at it now instead of relying
- 11:10upon what could be just like, well, let me fit the future
- 11:13right now. And if things change, then I'll
- 11:15pivot. But for right now, I'm just
- 11:18going to do every like, like the whole connect by shape events
- 11:21that I'm going to be doing. Yeah, like, I think it's
- 11:23awesome. And the first part of my mind
- 11:25was like, turn into business and all these things and and, you
- 11:30know, it's the same thing. Like, I I think cookies is the
- 11:33best. Cookies are the best example of
- 11:37what not to do. Just because you make great
- 11:40cookies doesn't mean you need to open up a fucking store, right.
- 11:44How many of those turned out from that one?
- 11:46Yeah, there, there's crumble and there's, you know, Chip and
- 11:50there's, you know. Granny bees.
- 11:53Granny bees and and The Dirty dough and all these other ones.
- 11:57But the thing that really mattered on that one is that it,
- 11:59it's a commodity. It's just a commodity.
- 12:02It's not anything where somebody's going to be like,
- 12:04this is so amazing. Yeah.
- 12:06And it just doesn't work. And it you can't think that your
- 12:10idea is just going to be the best idea out there.
- 12:12Like anybody can make cookies and they go, well, these people
- 12:15do really well. And I'm like, no, they get to a
- 12:17certain point. And now I look, I'm like, like
- 12:19the drug dealers from the 80s that we were all told to be
- 12:21afraid of. Like, hey, yeah, come on over.
- 12:24First one's on me. But you gotta.
- 12:26Pay the rest free drugs. Yeah, Oh, don't worry about, but
- 12:30you get a free one, I'll give you some free freebies so you
- 12:33can hand out to your friends to get them addicted.
- 12:35You know, I mean, honestly, like, I don't know one drug
- 12:38dealer that matter of fact, I don't know any drug dealer
- 12:40that's going to be like, hey, this one's free.
- 12:42Fuck you. First one's on me.
- 12:44No, they're like, all right, that's going to be this much.
- 12:46Yep. And if I trust you, I might
- 12:48lower the price, you know, because I don't trust you yet.
- 12:51And it's it really is about trust.
- 12:54But they just openly like all these confection companies, like
- 12:58there's a confect that it's just called confection companies.
- 13:01They're not restaurants. Yeah, they're just, they're
- 13:05diabetes in a box and it's. We are so full of that here,
- 13:09especially in Utah between our sodas with extra sugar.
- 13:13What's the donut place that just came in?
- 13:15There's a donut. Yeah, it's pink box.
- 13:18Oh yeah, we love pink Box. I'm not at the Donuts though.
- 13:23But that's the thing, like, I mean, there's how many fucking
- 13:25donut shops do we have? Cookie shops, Confection shops,
- 13:29Cake pops. Because we're big into consuming
- 13:32and so all of the places that are out are like, hey, you could
- 13:36consume this, or you could consume this, or you could
- 13:38consume this, or you could consume all of these.
- 13:42And when you're not out here consuming things, you ever
- 13:44thought about taking home some stuff to consume?
- 13:46Or door dashing things to consume.
- 13:48Matter of fact, if you're feeling like you need to consume
- 13:51right now. Maybe turn on Netflix?
- 13:53I'll give you the first one free, but you got to buy the
- 13:56rest. Fucking drug dealers, dude.
- 14:00It's fucked up is what it is. It's really fucked up.
- 14:02And, and so I don't know, man. Now, though, by coming from
- 14:06where we came from, you're going to find that you're going to
- 14:09really do well and you're going to enjoy it more.
- 14:13And they're going to be more open to how you do things.
- 14:17They're going to be freer for you to be able to influence
- 14:20them. Based.
- 14:21Yeah. That sounds like a lot of
- 14:22fucking work. Have you ever tried this?
- 14:24And they go, oh, what? Like, I shock, as much as we
- 14:29deal with AI, like, we're always asking questions, we're always
- 14:32peeling the onion. We're always like, no, I don't
- 14:34believe that. Let's let's dig it.
- 14:35Where are your sources from that?
- 14:37Oh, you're pulling from those ones?
- 14:38I need to be more diverse. I need you to find from here.
- 14:42Can you find outside of the US? That'd be great.
- 14:44All this stuff. It's so good for our minds
- 14:47because we're constantly inquisitive, right?
- 14:48Stay curious. But man, it, it just, it shows
- 14:53you that that's not really, that's not perpetuated in the
- 14:57work world now, because I work with people that are younger
- 15:00than me, that are around like your age and younger, and they
- 15:05have no fucking clue how to use this technology.
- 15:08They go, Oh yeah, I know how to do that.
- 15:09And I'm like, do you? And they're like, yeah.
- 15:11And this guy tried to tell me he's like, yeah, we're not
- 15:14supposed to put any of our client information into into
- 15:18365. We can only do it the one that's
- 15:20built within our e-mail system because then everybody else will
- 15:24have that. And you know, we can't share our
- 15:26information with our pros, with our competitors.
- 15:28And I'm like, I'm having a hard time following your logic here.
- 15:31You're telling me that something that uses the Internet?
- 15:35Pulled this data for you. Just for you though.
- 15:37And you can't share that in this because that data might be then
- 15:43available on the Internet. And I said, where the fuck do
- 15:45you think our competition is getting that?
- 15:48Or do you think your information came from?
- 15:50Exactly came from your competition putting that online
- 15:52or some service. And now you have a box that you
- 15:56can go to and ask questions and it will find you the answers if
- 16:00you ask the right questions. When I tell them that, they go,
- 16:02but yeah, how do I ask that? And they go, no, that didn't
- 16:04work. And I'm like, here's my prompt
- 16:06system that I do for prospecting.
- 16:08Here you go. And they're like, oh, wow.
- 16:11Oh, that's much better. And I said, and you don't even
- 16:14need to do that. You could use your voice.
- 16:15And I click on The Voice dictation, a dictation.
- 16:18He's like, well, then I'll be talking on the phone in front of
- 16:20everybody else. You're supposed to.
- 16:22Yeah, we're we're in cubicles. What the fuck do you think we're
- 16:25here to do? What?
- 16:26Do you think you're doing? We're supposed to be calling.
- 16:29Are you whispering in there? It's me.
- 16:31I don't want anyone to hear me. I get it.
- 16:34Dude this is so weird. Apprehension of calling somebody
- 16:37is a real thing. Yeah.
- 16:39But I started to change my mind and I don't know why it's the
- 16:44rejection. Yeah, it's the fear of no.
- 16:46It's like they're going to say no, they're not going to like me
- 16:49and right. There.
- 16:50But that's what that no is no liking is they won't like me.
- 16:54It's this rejection of like, oh shit, I'm going to call them.
- 16:57And this person who doesn't know me is going to say no.
- 16:59Well, they're not saying no to you.
- 17:01They're just they don't know you.
- 17:03It's nothing personal. It hasn't absolutely fuck all to
- 17:06do with any of us. It's just totally.
- 17:08They're like, yeah, I'm busy. I'm in the middle of this.
- 17:11I don't have fucking time for this.
- 17:12I don't, I don't give a shit. I don't know who you are.
- 17:15Yep. And it's nothing personal.
- 17:16It's just like how many people pick up a telemarketer call and
- 17:20go, yeah, I'm going to hear this out.
- 17:22Yeah, no, dude, I. Most people don't.
- 17:24So it's just that I know how this goes because this is how I
- 17:27treat people when they call me most often.
- 17:30I'm going, hey, I don't have time for this.
- 17:32No. And so it's hard to get someone
- 17:34else to feel that same way of like, hey, I'm calling you out
- 17:36of the blue. Well, that's the thing.
- 17:38Too time for me. And, and you, you can that's the
- 17:41thing. Like what are you doing for my
- 17:43time? Like cuz I mean, one, I need to
- 17:45be inspired and entertained. And if you come to me like we,
- 17:50we had a pest control guy came over.
- 17:51Good kid, nice kid, has a lot of questions.
- 17:55It was expensive and I was high and I bought it or at least I
- 17:59gave him my information to buy it.
- 18:01And then literally seconds later another person at the and I'm
- 18:05like, dude, I just got it. And he goes, did you just get it
- 18:08with that guy over there? He goes, yeah, he's way more
- 18:11expensive than I am. I'm like, how much more
- 18:14expensive? He goes, we're 119 every time
- 18:17for the treatment. The other one was 179.
- 18:19He's like, but I'm going to do the first one for 100, just for
- 18:2299, and then everything after that.
- 18:24That one, you can stop treatments or push treatments
- 18:27whenever you want. We'll come spray your lawn,
- 18:29We'll spray inside your house. We'll make sure the bugs are
- 18:32down. If you ever do this, come up and
- 18:33treat between those times, we're happy to do it for free.
- 18:36Mike. OK.
- 18:38And he goes. So we'll just get your
- 18:39information, OK. I mean, the kid closed me fast.
- 18:43The other kid talked to me for like 20 minutes.
- 18:45This kid less than 5, and he closed me.
- 18:49The reason why he beat the shit out of the other guy.
- 18:52Oh yeah, By 79% I'm like, yeah, I'd be dumb.
- 18:58It wouldn't make economical sense.
- 18:59I would. I'd be basing.
- 19:01I'm working with this guy. I don't know this kid.
- 19:03I'm never going to see this kid again.
- 19:04He's not the one that's going to be treating my house.
- 19:06No. So this kid actually did it
- 19:08better by just getting right to the deal.
- 19:11You're going to pay this much. I'm going to offer you for this
- 19:12much. I'm going to give you the exact.
- 19:14I mean, he had the same slick. I mean, they just put a
- 19:16different company name over there.
- 19:18It's so dumb. Yep.
- 19:19So I was just like, yeah, the kid, the other kid came back
- 19:22because I cancelled. Yeah, and he's like, shoot, I
- 19:25don't want to lose that sale. I got to go see if I can keep
- 19:27it. And he's like, did you close the
- 19:29other guy? He's all sad.
- 19:31I'm like, no, man, sorry. My wife.
- 19:33Actually, I called my wife to tell the good news.
- 19:35And she was like, why did you do that?
- 19:37I already got one. I'm like, oh, no.
- 19:40And I'm like, OK, So I canceled. He's like, it had nothing to do
- 19:42with me. And I said, OK, I'm going to
- 19:44tell. I'm going to stop you right now.
- 19:45It never has anything to do with you.
- 19:47I said, so that does not define you.
- 19:49The sale does not define you. Yeah, I said is an opportunity
- 19:52that was missed. Oh well, if you base everything
- 19:54based on that and you get all butthurt about it, go do
- 19:57something else, because this isn't about like that.
- 20:00At all. That's crazy.
- 20:02Yeah, but now I tell myself, and I've been kind of thinking about
- 20:05it because my boss comes out sometimes and he goes too quiet
- 20:08in here. It's because he's not hearing a
- 20:10ton of people calling. Yeah, because he's not hearing
- 20:12the action. So now I'm going to work because
- 20:14I was trying to bet people like, hey, I'll get this many
- 20:17appointments, I'll pay you. We didn't even want to fulfill
- 20:20it. It didn't feel good.
- 20:21And I'm like, now I'm just going to be better.
- 20:23Like, hey, if you're quiet, you're not working.
- 20:25If you're if you're quiet, that means you're at Academy.
- 20:28So let's let's rock'n'roll and I'll just start making calls.
- 20:30I do it all the time now. I love people love talking to
- 20:33you. And then I make a dial and then
- 20:35I'm super happy on the call and then I go, people love talking
- 20:38to you. And then I don't have to say it
- 20:39to myself after like the third call and I just go through it.
- 20:42And it's because it's the energy you approach a call different
- 20:46and the conversation is different.
- 20:47And then the people on the other end are like, oh, this person
- 20:50sounds happy. I don't know what it is, but
- 20:52I'll at least listen. Yeah, dude, I was doing that at
- 20:55first when I got there. And then my boss is like, you
- 20:59need to make it more serious. And because he's my bot, because
- 21:02he doesn't know any other way. He he's been selling insurance
- 21:05for over 20 years. So there was a way that you did
- 21:07it before. Like you come wearing a, you
- 21:10know, a blazer, you know, sports coat when you do a deal.
- 21:14All right, I mean, maybe some companies will be really
- 21:16appreciative of it. I'll tell you what, the, the,
- 21:18the Connection by Shape event, I just came from work.
- 21:22The only difference was I put on a sports coat because I was
- 21:25like, maybe this will help people.
- 21:27Totally. People were like, oh, he's the
- 21:29authority, he's wearing a coat, whatever.
- 21:31That's funny. But it worked in that one.
- 21:33But the way that he thinks of it is like the perception is I'm
- 21:37not professional unless I'm wearing this.
- 21:39And so now I have done that, I started changing my approach.
- 21:42I'm like, hey, what's going on? Hey man, I am reaching out of
- 21:45the blue and I'll be brief because you weren't expecting me
- 21:48to call you. And then I just do 2 lines and
- 21:51that's it. Like I literally say to him,
- 21:53well, I work with companies to be able to look at cost
- 21:56reduction strategies in their health benefits.
- 21:59So can I ask you one question is how did your employees react to
- 22:04the rate changes during this last renewal?
- 22:06I don't know how happy they are about paying more.
- 22:08And they're like, yeah, it was rough.
- 22:10And then I can just have a regular conversation instead of
- 22:13trying to sell them. Yeah.
- 22:15And it's a mixed bag I get from work where my boss will say,
- 22:18like, we don't sell. We're building relationships.
- 22:21And yet he'll be in a meeting with me and he goes into
- 22:23autopilot to fix it. And he's just starts talking
- 22:25about all the great things that we do instead of like just
- 22:28focusing on them. Yeah, it's a show up and throw
- 22:32up versus like understanding what their pain is, right, if
- 22:36they actually have a need, who they are and then that just kind
- 22:39of flows naturally. I told you I went to a business
- 22:42lunch with Alec. Oh yeah, yeah, he had a good
- 22:44time with that. I did.
- 22:45I loved it. He was a bit nervous because he
- 22:47hadn't met these two dudes before and he's and.
- 22:51Well, he's not really a networker.
- 22:53He's. No.
- 22:54And it's a whole new industry and he's up in the one to $3
- 22:57billion a year market. So he's he's working a good
- 23:01amount in a space where he's got to build a whole new network.
- 23:05Yeah, new book of business everything.
- 23:07So he just was like, you know, I don't know these guys.
- 23:10So would you come? And he was nervous about me just
- 23:14coming as me. So he was like, I'll tell him
- 23:16you're in the tech space and that you're an account manager.
- 23:18And so they were talking to me for a bit and I'm just talking
- 23:22like because. Because we do it every week.
- 23:24Yeah. And so I was like, OK, well,
- 23:28just bullshitting with them. And finally, like halfway
- 23:32through the lunch or whatever, Alec finally does his pitch
- 23:36thing. And then afterwards me and him
- 23:38go boarding and he was like, what do you think?
- 23:39And I was like, honestly, it was good.
- 23:41But I would have just asked him a couple questions like they
- 23:46already were interested in meeting and the guy told you
- 23:49that he was definitely had some things he wanted to talk to you
- 23:52about and ask. So you're in the same space.
- 23:54I would just. Do a different time.
- 23:56Yeah, just just a little bit drip of some questions and and
- 23:59ask this because now this will, you know, get a lot of
- 24:02information for creating these partnerships and not moving
- 24:05forward, but without having to do a pitch, without having to
- 24:09whip it out and go. All right, guys, thanks for
- 24:11having lunch. Now here's my quick pitch.
- 24:13Yeah, here. Here's the There's no free
- 24:16lunch. Yeah, I'm like, yeah, so my.
- 24:18Timeshare, yeah. So I'm like, it's just kind of
- 24:22that same thing of like, you know what, I I'm here at this, I
- 24:25really just have a couple questions or like I I'm you're
- 24:28not expecting it, but like it's that keeping it really short,
- 24:31keeping it simple, not showing up with a million solutions of
- 24:35like, oh, it's like, have you ever?
- 24:36And then like when they say something, have you guys ever
- 24:38heard of this or thought about this?
- 24:40Interesting. OK.
- 24:41Well then I ask you a question about that.
- 24:43And like it's you're great with it when it comes to the shapes
- 24:46and everything else. And but I think it's that it's
- 24:48still the insurance doesn't feel like you and you're trying to
- 24:51sell it as an insurance salesman versus just.
- 24:54No, I should be. Well, here's the thing.
- 24:56Like this is what I would do. And this is what's happened.
- 24:59If you go in like, like without, let's take your brother's
- 25:03position over there. One, you're doing a, a, a public
- 25:07event, not in an office space. So you never bring it up because
- 25:10they already know what you're there to do and you already know
- 25:13what they want to do. And you feel like you have the
- 25:15solution. The only thing you should be
- 25:17doing is building a friendship and then just talking about it,
- 25:21going, hey, next time we get together, that's it.
- 25:24And they go, yeah, well, let's talk about that right now.
- 25:27Do you want to do it now or do you want to do it later?
- 25:29I I wanted to get to know you like I don't, I don't work with
- 25:32people I don't know. And I need to be bringing that
- 25:34back because I used to do that when I was doing like
- 25:36copywriting and stuff like that. Yeah, like, and I'm still doing
- 25:40that. I think it's just sometimes when
- 25:42we get into the new, it's hard to be our full self in that
- 25:46because we're trying to acclimate, we're trying to
- 25:49adjust and learn all of this new stuff and it's done in a very
- 25:53specific way, yes. And that way is not usually us.
- 25:56We're focused on the what, not The Who.
- 25:58Yeah. And so instead of just being us
- 26:00doing these actions that we've learned now it's OK, Well, we
- 26:04have to be this persona of this person.
- 26:07Well, I don't need to be that person.
- 26:09I need to be me doing these actions, right?
- 26:12Like, but we, I think we lose that sometimes with new jobs and
- 26:15stuff where it's like, oh fuck. Well, they told me this is how
- 26:18it's done and so I need to be them.
- 26:20Well, it's like an old expectation, right?
- 26:22It's like, it's honestly like the the closest thing you could
- 26:26have kind to is like leaving a religion and then joining
- 26:29another one. And the reason why I would say
- 26:30like that is because total different practices, different
- 26:33ways they do it, different things they say.
- 26:36And you want to feel like you know everything.
- 26:38Like I told the guys yesterday, because we have like a bunch of
- 26:41new guys in there. I said, you're going to feel
- 26:43like you want to do something different from what they know.
- 26:46And the actions are the same, but the way you approach it has
- 26:52to be different. And it says it's taken me a
- 26:53while to learn that because I'm a, I'm a smart guy that knows
- 26:57that. And I want to tell everybody
- 26:58that I am a smart guy and I want to show them how smart I am by
- 27:01knowing their thing and mastering what they do instead
- 27:04of just doing what I do. And what I do is like how you do
- 27:08things. It's it's unique to you.
- 27:10I would never say, like Brandon, you should say these things
- 27:13because you do better with autonomy.
- 27:17I think we all do. And when we try to be like
- 27:20everybody else, that's when you could smell it.
- 27:22Yeah, it feels scripted. Yeah, it feels sells.
- 27:25Y and you're like, why are you? Why is your penis on my leg?
- 27:28Yeah, exactly. Can you feel my love on your
- 27:30leg? Yeah, exactly.
- 27:32Ending up doing it, it really does feel like that where all
- 27:35you're doing is just you're, you're fabricating a connection
- 27:39to make sure that you're taken care of.
- 27:41When you start talking about all the stuff that you can do for
- 27:43them, it lets them real quickly that you are there just for you.
- 27:47Yeah. Versus if you're there and
- 27:50you're asking questions about them, their things, it's not you
- 27:55and your solution and that it's you're trying to understand them
- 27:58and what their pain is and what's.
- 27:59Because you know something it could possibly help them and you
- 28:03know, you're, of course you're not going to their ideas like,
- 28:06well, you're not going to do it for free.
- 28:08Like no, I'm not trying to do this for free.
- 28:10What I'm trying to purchase first is your trust.
- 28:12I want you to know that I really care about this because there's
- 28:15a lot of people in my same space, could be anything.
- 28:18They want your trust too, but a lot of times they're going to
- 28:21show you trust by giving you the lowest price, thinking that
- 28:23that's going to be trust. Yeah.
- 28:25But you know, that's like, it's like anything in life.
- 28:29If you put too much trust into one thing and you guarantee it's
- 28:32going to be without change. Like I don't know one thing that
- 28:35is not a constant. That was funny.
- 28:38I in my second interview with that company yesterday, they
- 28:44asked me and they're like, oh, so how do you, how do you work?
- 28:46And I was like, oh, I actually work like this.
- 28:48I really like structure, like things and like this is how I
- 28:52function basically. And they're like, oh, OK, well,
- 28:54what about when change comes in or things break and I'm like,
- 28:58I'm a parent. I'm almost 40.
- 29:00Like life is change. Life is continuous change and to
- 29:05think that I can control or you know, that I need to get upset
- 29:09that something new has arrived. It just means maybe it has a
- 29:13higher risk or higher priority at the moment.
- 29:16And then I just put a pin in this other thing and switch
- 29:19gears to whatever the high risk is and top priority.
- 29:23Well, it's even like even with the relationships that you have
- 29:25in your workspaces, like 1, like there's people in my job where
- 29:29I, I feel real good connection with.
- 29:31Yeah. And there's other people that
- 29:32I'm like, you know, arms distance.
- 29:34And that's OK. I don't dislike you, but I just,
- 29:38I don't have the same level of trust as the other ones do.
- 29:40So I don't know what I can say and do around you that could
- 29:43offend you or whatever if you're one of those people that get
- 29:45offended by everything. And you know, there are people
- 29:49in my job where I'm like, yeah, I'm probably not going to tell
- 29:51you very many things because I don't know you well enough.
- 29:54But it it's that like you? Said layer of trust.
- 29:57Well, and what you just told them is like, look, I, I, I see
- 30:00that change is a constant that if we work together, things are
- 30:04going to be pretty cool. And I want to have a good time
- 30:07when if I'm going to spend time away from my family, my home, I
- 30:10want to have a good time while I'm doing it.
- 30:11I don't want to be busy and I don't want to have to work
- 30:14really hard. I don't want to feel like that.
- 30:16I want to feel like this is easy and you do it so well that you
- 30:20make it look easy. But then other people have real
- 30:23big difficulties with it. And that's been my problem, bro.
- 30:26I have been trying to do what other people do instead of what
- 30:29I do because I'm smart enough to know all that shit about
- 30:32insurance, all that stuff. Like I know a lot of how to save
- 30:35money and how to get these businesses to do it, but doesn't
- 30:37fucking matter. Like they need to like me and
- 30:40trust me. So this next week, dude, I'm I'm
- 30:42like doing heavy drops and I'm just there to gain their trust
- 30:46and be a friend. Like I legit I do this because
- 30:49of this reason, because I saw double digit increases last
- 30:53year. And I think it's pretty
- 30:55ridiculous because I know your employees are having a hard
- 30:57time. And if somebody pays for their
- 30:58own health insurance, I'll tell you right now if it went up, I'd
- 31:01be fucking pissed. Be like I'm going to get the
- 31:03same amount of treatment for more money.
- 31:05Well then every business owner doesn't, 99% of them don't
- 31:09insure every family member, every friend.
- 31:12So every person they know, every employee feels that pain
- 31:17regardless of them. So they know that that is still
- 31:20this pain in the ass thing that's coming.
- 31:21Like maybe not of a lot of them have plans in place for that.
- 31:25No, they don't. They don't think about like.
- 31:26They usually just take like the cheapest plan.
- 31:28And usually that's a really good indicator to me that they were
- 31:32just told take the cheapest plan instead of thinking like three
- 31:35or four or five years down the road because you're not
- 31:38expecting your employees to leave in 12 months, so.
- 31:41Why? But that's how they treat their,
- 31:43their health care benefits. They trade, well, we'll just
- 31:46trade it to the cheapest 1 next year.
- 31:48And yeah, now unfortunately, we're starting to see that
- 31:50within the tech space. We're seeing all these companies
- 31:53cutting jobs like crazy. And if you've been a part of
- 31:56that, I feel for you because it's it, it's these companies
- 32:00had built up a false sense of security saying we need you, but
- 32:04they didn't. And now they're just abandoning
- 32:09him and thinking now, OK. And these people like, like my
- 32:12brother-in-law, dude, like he was an account manager and not
- 32:15an account project manager, a totally different thing.
- 32:18And he got let go. And then he got let go.
- 32:22And then he got let go the third time.
- 32:23And then he's been without a job for six months and he's like, I
- 32:27got an interview with Weave and I don't want to say anything.
- 32:30It's been a long time. They could have changed
- 32:32direction, leadership, a structure of how they, you know,
- 32:36processes stupidity level of certain people.
- 32:40Yeah, for sure. But it could be a good
- 32:42opportunity and it depends on what he's doing there.
- 32:45Yeah, and that's what he's saying to them.
- 32:46But you know, the thing for him is that he still goes back to, I
- 32:49want it to be the same as when it was really awesome for me.
- 32:52But the one thing I like you stated is that life is constant
- 32:56change. And so I should never be dead
- 32:59set on today's going to be awesome because these things are
- 33:02going to happen. Today's going to be awesome
- 33:04because I'm going to make it awesome.
- 33:06And when things that come up that are disappointing and bad,
- 33:08you know what I'm going to, I'm going to stop and look at it
- 33:11going, can I change that now? If no, then let's focus on the
- 33:14positive things that I can, which is just progress.
- 33:17And that's what I try to think about every day.
- 33:20But seriously, on my way over here, I was thinking that same
- 33:22thing what you had just stated. And it's that's that great
- 33:27example of you being at a network thing and he's nervous
- 33:29about all of the all of the business features.
- 33:32And you're just like, and they came there and you're like,
- 33:35yeah, this is who I am. I'm not even going to talk about
- 33:37that because they don't care who you are.
- 33:39They're looking for another friend.
- 33:41Every person you talk to is looking for a friend.
- 33:43Yeah, that was basically it. And the conversation at lunch
- 33:46was great. Like it was fun.
- 33:47We talked about gosh, what did we talk about my divorce?
- 33:50We talked about that. We talked about kids, we talked
- 33:52about ketamine, we talked about cannabis.
- 33:54We talked about all sorts of random shit and and.
- 33:58Your brother's probably like. And one of those dudes was
- 34:01definitely holla Mormon, you could tell mid 50s.
- 34:04And so just both great guys had amazing conversations with them
- 34:08both and it was just very different.
- 34:11And I liked that his pitch was very short.
- 34:12He kept it short and they had a couple questions about kind of
- 34:16tools and things that might help with where things are going.
- 34:19It was a good topic but I'm like you could have just asked a
- 34:22couple questions and wouldn't have even pulled from, you know,
- 34:26conversation just if they chose. To maybe a place of concern too,
- 34:30like, hey, you know, what are you doing here?
- 34:31I got. I'm just curious.
- 34:33Because that was the biggest thing is everyone in that
- 34:35industry knows that the certificates have changed from
- 34:39398 days to 200 days, that they refresh, that you have to update
- 34:44them and then it'll go to 100 and then to 47.
- 34:46And so all of those tech companies have like every
- 34:50company who has websites and all of these things need those
- 34:55securities and they have to update them across.
- 34:58A Oh yeah, dude, that's a big thing everywhere.
- 35:00And so everyone's having that issue.
- 35:02And so it was like all he had to do was ask, hey, what are you
- 35:05guys seeing or doing with this? Or even like in the third
- 35:09person. That's one thing I've learned is
- 35:10like other companies like this, they they've experienced this.
- 35:13So I'm like, it's just super easy to go, hey, what is your
- 35:17guys's plan for these types of things that you guys are seeing?
- 35:19Because they're on a different, they're on the security side and
- 35:22he's on the certificate side. And I'm like, so they partner,
- 35:26they work well together, but it's just a simple question.
- 35:29And I was like, so that doesn't necessarily pull from the
- 35:32conversation. And you could do that without
- 35:34pitching it and even just get that same connection and that,
- 35:39you know, and, and not have to draw from that without going,
- 35:41hey, I'm going to interject my pitch.
- 35:43It's just more of a natural flow to it.
- 35:46And I was like, and then it doesn't feel like, Hey, can you
- 35:48feel this on your leg? You know, here you're going to
- 35:51buy the timeshare. It's.
- 35:52Like, all right, this is just part of the conversation because
- 35:56we've talked about a million different things, and this
- 35:59doesn't feel like a sales pitch or anything.
- 36:01It's just what what the hell are you guys doing with this?
- 36:03Because holy shit, this is crazy.
- 36:05Yeah, this is going to shock our whole industry.
- 36:08I'm so glad that we had this conversation because it's, you
- 36:12know, I've, I've felt like, you know what, what's going on here?
- 36:15Like because the other people in there are getting meetings, but
- 36:18they're not closing deals. I can close deals.
- 36:21Yeah. And then my boss was talking
- 36:23about how when you get to mid market, you can partner up with
- 36:26another producer and you can go in on together.
- 36:28And there's these two other guys that are the top performers in
- 36:31the state. Yeah.
- 36:32One of them loves to hunt. He can prospect like crazy and
- 36:35the other one closes. So that's what they do.
- 36:37They. Partner they.
- 36:38Partner with all of these big companies and they go over there
- 36:42and they do it together and it's and I was like, that would be so
- 36:46much cooler in this one too, because I am a shit at
- 36:49prospecting. I'm shit at it.
- 36:51The reason why is because I'm too into like what you stated
- 36:54before the no, no, you're not going to like me, and that's the
- 36:58worst for me than taking my business.
- 37:00And so when I got that in my head go people love talking to
- 37:03you. You just have to be one that
- 37:05people want to talk to and so it's.
- 37:08Yeah, and not everyone's gonna have the time, no.
- 37:10And so it's like, you know, but it's the you tried not yeah and
- 37:13not getting in your head about like, oh fuck, 'cause it is.
- 37:16It's that, no. And it beats you up and you're
- 37:18like, oh, it'd be like going to a dance and asking 50 girls out
- 37:23to dance and every single one of them turned you down.
- 37:25You're like, fuck. Like then you go and stand on
- 37:27the wall like. You go to the next one, Yeah,
- 37:30and you get that. I mean, it was like at that, you
- 37:32know, that's a really good point, Brandon.
- 37:34It's like at the event, like when I'm when I got this couple
- 37:37paired up and the guy's like, I've been coming to these things
- 37:39forever and I've never been able to make a connection.
- 37:43He goes, this is the first time where I feel like I met my
- 37:45person and the girl was like, yeah, I feel the same way.
- 37:50Like to hear people do that as strangers 1 moment and then
- 37:54moments later being like wow. Especially in a time in the
- 37:59world where I feel like we are incredibly disconnected as
- 38:04humans from each other and have a real hard struggle with just
- 38:08connecting with someone new, someone random, someone out of
- 38:11the blue. Well, I'm going to do a connect
- 38:14by shape event for friends soon and I want you and em to come
- 38:18and it's it's going to be awesome because it's the way
- 38:22that we set up this way. I set up this last one.
- 38:24I'm making it even tighter. Wiley's making an app for me
- 38:27right now, so it makes it even easier.
- 38:29And I'm like, you know, I'll get you back.
- 38:31And he's like, no, I really want to do this for you.
- 38:33He's like, you've helped me so many times without even asking
- 38:35for anything. He's like, let me do this for
- 38:37you. And I was like, I appreciate
- 38:38that, man. I really do.
- 38:40And I just want to make it so where people can connect.
- 38:42But dude, that's what I do. I get it doesn't even make me
- 38:45feel like, yeah, I did that. I didn't do shit.
- 38:47I told him to. They're like thinking like, I
- 38:48didn't do anything. What I did is I just kind of
- 38:51revealed that you're, you're good people, you just, you just
- 38:54blend better with certain others and what better time.
- 38:58And that's the whole thing. Like the friend one.
- 38:59I think that will do even more because people want friends,
- 39:04They want genuine friends. But it's kind of hard to trust
- 39:07people these days 'cause you think that they're all after
- 39:09something. But if you had something really
- 39:11in common, that's kind of cool. And if you find each other
- 39:14interesting, like how opposite we are, but we're the same
- 39:18'cause we're always, we stay curious.
- 39:20So it's, I don't know, guys. Tell me what you guys think
- 39:22about that. Give us some ideas about what
- 39:24you guys got from this episode. And stay curious.
- 39:27Yeah, stay curious.
