- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi Catherine, Hi Chelsea.
- 0:03Speaker 2: I'm in my last day of Whistler, Canada for the season.
- 0:06Speaker 3: This is it.
- 0:07Speaker 2: I skied yesterday. We did some spring skiing with all
- 0:10Speaker 2: the kids and all the adults. We had such an
- 0:12Speaker 2: epic day. It was so much fun. I skied into
- 0:15Speaker 2: a tree, which I always do, but it was spring
- 0:18Speaker 2: slushy skiing, so even as I was heading towards the tree,
- 0:21Speaker 2: I thought this is going to be easy and to
- 0:23Speaker 2: bounce right off. And then Ann Shauneker, who you may
- 0:26Speaker 2: know from my book, was able to rescue me. As usual.
- 0:29Speaker 2: She got my skis off and out of the tree.
- 0:31Speaker 2: One was in like three feet of snow and behind
- 0:34Speaker 2: the tree, so I have good pictures. And then we
- 0:38Speaker 2: went to appray to a new place and then I
- 0:40Speaker 2: got a massage. It was just like one of those
- 0:42Speaker 2: perfect days. I was with like six of my girlfriends.
- 0:45Speaker 2: And then tonight I'm doing my book. I'm doing a
- 0:47Speaker 2: book event in Whistler at the theater here. Armchair Books
- 0:51Speaker 2: is our local bookstore, so I wanted to support them
- 0:53Speaker 2: and have a book event for I'll have what she's having.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So I'm going to do that tonight and then I'm
- 0:58Speaker 2: off I'm off to Chicago to.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Marrow, borrow, fabulous, fabulous, and then you go to Europe.
- 1:03Speaker 1: You'll be going to Europe.
- 1:04Speaker 2: I'm gonna going to Europe, you guys, if you haven't
- 1:05Speaker 2: gotten your tickets. I start out in Rekuvic. I think
- 1:08Speaker 2: it's May eleventh. I'm in Rekuvic, and then I'm in Belfast.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I'm coming to thirteen countries, so check Chelseahandler dot com.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I am coming to a city near you. I'm very
- 1:20Speaker 2: very excited for my European tour.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And we've got one of your buddies in the studio today.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Oh yeah, this is one of my close friends who
- 1:28Speaker 2: is a huge pain in my ass. Actually I'm a
- 1:31Speaker 2: huge pain in her ass. And I take a lot
- 1:34Speaker 2: of pride in that. She is the creator and host
- 1:37Speaker 2: of the Motherhood on Hallmark, whose first two episodes are
- 1:39Speaker 2: out now. She also starts in Overcompensating on Amazon Prime.
- 1:43Speaker 2: All episodes are available May fifteenth, and you would recognize
- 1:47Speaker 2: her from a lot of different shows like Friday Night Lights,
- 1:51Speaker 2: like Dirty John, Like, I don't know, she's in everything,
- 1:55Speaker 2: So please welcome Connie Britton.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Hi, Connie, we got you muted right now? Okay, do
- 2:01Speaker 3: you want me to unmute?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yeah, no, we want you to stay on mute. Connie,
- 2:05Speaker 2: we want you to stay on mute for the interview.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I have a little story to tell about Connie as
- 2:13Speaker 2: we begin this episode of the podcast.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Are we starting? Is this?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Yeah? No, that bitch is on? Yeah, that's on. So
- 2:19Speaker 2: we're promoting, you know, Connie Britton from a million television series.
- 2:25Speaker 2: We'll go over that in your intro while you're not here,
- 2:27Speaker 2: so that you don't have to listen to.
- 2:28Speaker 3: That, and also you can say whatever you want. I know,
- 2:31Speaker 3: I know what you're gonna say. I know how you
- 2:33Speaker 3: feel about my television series.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Do you I find it very funny whenever I watch
- 2:38Speaker 2: Connie in anything, because it's I know her very well,
- 2:43Speaker 2: and I go out of my way for Connie all
- 2:46Speaker 2: the time. I constantly am showing up at things whenever
- 2:49Speaker 2: she asked me to. I can't say the same for
- 2:51Speaker 2: Connie with regard to me or my birthday, but I'm
- 2:55Speaker 2: always doing things for her. But we did have a
- 2:58Speaker 2: pretty funny do you want to talk about album? I
- 3:00Speaker 2: think that's a pretty funny story to share.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Oh, that is a pretty funny story to share. I
- 3:04Speaker 3: love that story.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I want to tell you what happened. So Jane Fonda
- 3:08Speaker 2: wanted us to campaign in Albuquerque before the election. The
- 3:12Speaker 2: candidate that we campaigned for did not win the election.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I want to be on record saying that she is
- 3:17Speaker 2: not the president.
- 3:20Speaker 3: But so we did. We did that.
- 3:26Speaker 2: What of when Jane Fonda asks you to do anything,
- 3:29Speaker 2: you do it, especially with my history with Jane Fonda.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Connie has her own history with Jane Fonda different from yours. Uh,
- 3:38Speaker 2: actually no, because remember that time we went to go
- 3:40Speaker 2: visit her when she had her hip, so she had
- 3:43Speaker 2: some surgery, dined and we went to go visit her
- 3:45Speaker 2: at her house and you revealed to her that your
- 3:47Speaker 2: father said that she was Remember what did you say
- 3:50Speaker 2: to her?
- 3:50Speaker 3: Oh, that's right. And I thought it was such a
- 3:53Speaker 3: great story. And she looked at me like, oh, she's
- 3:55Speaker 3: like my father, I said. I said, Basically, we were
- 3:59Speaker 3: not allowed to say your name in our house growing
- 4:03Speaker 3: up because my father worked in nuclear power and so
- 4:08Speaker 3: it was like literally one name, one name that we
- 4:12Speaker 3: could not say. We could not watch any movies that
- 4:15Speaker 3: Jane Fonda was a part of. It was not to
- 4:18Speaker 3: be spoken because I guess of the China syndrome or something,
- 4:23Speaker 3: so like she was perceived as you know, this like
- 4:25Speaker 3: anti nuclear person in my household. And now of course
- 4:32Speaker 3: I idolize her. She is like the greatest icon. I
- 4:38Speaker 3: can't believe that I get to call her my friend,
- 4:40Speaker 3: like whatever. So I thought, great story, Like also, she
- 4:45Speaker 3: just had hip surgery, she just got out of surgery,
- 4:51Speaker 3: and she's just like drugs.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Anyway, that was one highlight. But cut to this last
- 4:57Speaker 2: year we were It was twenty twenty four. So last
- 4:59Speaker 2: year we went to Albuquerque and Jane was like, okay,
- 5:04Speaker 2: we both said we're in. We're like fun trip. Jane
- 5:08Speaker 2: told us she was taking a Southwest flight and Kannie
- 5:12Speaker 2: and I I was like, does that mean we have
- 5:14Speaker 2: to take a Southwest flight?
- 5:15Speaker 3: Can we meet you there?
- 5:17Speaker 2: I was like, so can we just can we? Is there? Okay?
- 5:20Speaker 2: So forget about the private plane. There isn't one. That's okay,
- 5:23Speaker 2: no problem. It's a political event, so of course I'm
- 5:26Speaker 2: not expecting that, but I don't know. I thought maybe
- 5:30Speaker 2: something something else would happen then, other than Southwest, perhaps
- 5:34Speaker 2: another airline. And then I say, okay, we're flying out
- 5:37Speaker 2: of Burbank. I think I'm trying to find the picture. Yes, Burbank,
- 5:42Speaker 2: do you have the picture to put up on I
- 5:44Speaker 2: don't know how high tech you are. Probably we're not
- 5:46Speaker 2: that high tech, but I do have the picture. I'll
- 5:49Speaker 2: use it when I post this episode. Anyway, we took
- 5:51Speaker 2: a picture of us. So we go to Burbank and
- 5:54Speaker 2: Jane has an assistant with her. Kanye and I are
- 5:57Speaker 2: are braving at the Burbank Airport, braving Southwest Airlines and
- 6:02Speaker 2: we I'm like, how is this gonna work? And every
- 6:06Speaker 2: single person I'm annoyed that I'm gonna have to deal with,
- 6:09Speaker 2: you know like this. I'm like, We're just going to
- 6:12Speaker 2: Southwest and Burbank and this is gonna be like a
- 6:15Speaker 2: shit show. And every person that you can imagine, of course,
- 6:19Speaker 2: is recognizing Jane Fonda. Nobody gives a shit that I'm there,
- 6:22Speaker 2: which was a beautiful reprieve. But but everyone would come
- 6:27Speaker 2: up to her and say can I get a picture
- 6:29Speaker 2: with you? Can I get a picture with you? And
- 6:30Speaker 2: then so I was there managing Jane Fonda. I'm like, well,
- 6:33Speaker 2: you can't keep saying yes to every single person, will
- 6:35Speaker 2: be here all day. But she had no no there
- 6:37Speaker 2: was It's like it's when Jane Fonda. Imagine her walking
- 6:40Speaker 2: through the terminal of Southwest and Burbank. I mean, obviously
- 6:44Speaker 2: anyone who sees her is like, what the fuck is
- 6:46Speaker 2: she doing there? Then we take the sideway.
- 6:49Speaker 3: She is also like could care less, Like she doesn't
- 6:53Speaker 3: give a shit about anything in real side seats of
- 6:56Speaker 3: the wall. Yes to the Starbucks at Burbank Airport. That's
- 7:00Speaker 3: where we're going to sit till our flight takes off.
- 7:02Speaker 2: And then someone was like because she was sitting down,
- 7:04Speaker 2: so people were crouching to get pictures with her, and
- 7:06Speaker 2: then some guy asked her. He goes, would you mind
- 7:08Speaker 2: standing up? And she was about to get up, and
- 7:10Speaker 2: I was like, don't get up, Jane, like just let
- 7:12Speaker 2: him take Why are you listening to him? And she's like,
- 7:14Speaker 2: you're right, Why am I listen? I'm eighty years old? Yeah,
- 7:18Speaker 2: she's eighty? Is she eighty?
- 7:19Speaker 3: Is she eighty? Is she eighty two? Eighty she's older
- 7:23Speaker 3: than eighty, right, Okay, yeah, I think she's eighty two.
- 7:26Speaker 3: She's unbelievable.
- 7:27Speaker 1: The Internet says she's eighty seven.
- 7:30Speaker 3: That's right, she's eighty seven. I knew she was like
- 7:32Speaker 3: way older, but then I didn't want to say a
- 7:34Speaker 3: fact like, it's so hard to believe that she's eighty seven.
- 7:37Speaker 2: It is really hard to She's a vibrant So she's vibrant.
- 7:41Speaker 2: She makes a hundred phone calls a day for her
- 7:42Speaker 2: climate pack, which I just made a donation to this
- 7:44Speaker 2: very morning. FYI, if you want to donate for climate change,
- 7:47Speaker 2: which you should. Her pack works harder than anything I've
- 7:50Speaker 2: ever seen.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Also, I'm speaking on a zoom for that oh later
- 7:53Speaker 3: today actually, okay, see, see she keeps asking you to
- 7:56Speaker 3: do things. I think she stopped asking me to do
- 7:58Speaker 3: things after this trip Querqueachdather. So then we get to Albuquerque,
- 8:02Speaker 3: we find out we're staying at the hotel the Hilton Yard.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Was the airport, the airport Hilton, Airport Hilton, the Airport Hilton.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Once again, Connie and I were texting on the side,
- 8:14Speaker 2: going is this really gonna happen? Are we staying? And
- 8:17Speaker 2: I'm like, God, I don't think we can move hotels
- 8:20Speaker 2: if Jane is staying at the airport Hilton, like we
- 8:22Speaker 2: have to. And I was only coming for Albuquerque. Connie
- 8:25Speaker 2: went on to another city the next day.
- 8:27Speaker 3: I stayed by the way, you like you kind of
- 8:29Speaker 3: just like brushed off the rest of the Southwest trip
- 8:32Speaker 3: like you me and Jane Fonda, like at least we
- 8:36Speaker 3: completed the row of our Southwest like I of course
- 8:41Speaker 3: had the middle seat, but yeah, like the three of
- 8:44Speaker 3: us in the row is our Southwest flight.
- 8:48Speaker 2: And then we get to Albuquerque. We go for lunch.
- 8:51Speaker 2: First I order a frozen margarita obviously, and Jane's like, oh,
- 8:55Speaker 2: I've never thought to have a frozen margarite in the daytime,
- 8:58Speaker 2: so she Connie orders one Jane or what I think.
- 9:01Speaker 2: I ordered my second one, and Jane's like, I can't
- 9:03Speaker 2: have two frozen margarita's and I was like, well I can.
- 9:06Speaker 2: And then right before we were about to campaign, right,
- 9:09Speaker 2: So then we go to one campaign event, which was
- 9:11Speaker 2: great for all the people who are working in the campaign,
- 9:15Speaker 2: and then we had some downtime. At that point, I
- 9:18Speaker 2: think I pulled an edible out of my purse and
- 9:20Speaker 2: was grabbing that and Jane goes, is that an edible, Chelsea?
- 9:23Speaker 2: And I'm like, yeah, we're campaigning, like I have to
- 9:25Speaker 2: remain alert. So then we went to the second event,
- 9:29Speaker 2: which was great. You know, Jane, it's just so nice
- 9:33Speaker 2: to see how people respond to her it's very inspiring.
- 9:37Speaker 3: But also how amazing she is at speaking about this subject,
- 9:43Speaker 3: like she is the most educated on it, Like she
- 9:48Speaker 3: she just knows how to talk about it. Like if
- 9:50Speaker 3: you want facts, you talk to Jane. It's like kind
- 9:53Speaker 3: of incredible to listen to her too.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, And she makes one hundred phone calls a day
- 9:57Speaker 2: to raise money for that climate pack and is always protesting.
- 10:01Speaker 2: She was doing fire drill Fridays for years while Biden
- 10:04Speaker 2: was in the White House. And she's constantly going to
- 10:07Speaker 2: places where they're going to drill and protesting. I mean,
- 10:09Speaker 2: she's indefatigable. So she so then yeah, for you too.
- 10:15Speaker 2: She although Connie went to Dartmouth, Oh I just in
- 10:18Speaker 2: case you forgot, and Speakspanderin by the way, okay, and
- 10:21Speaker 2: with roommates with Kirsten Chillibrand I don't think everyone knows that,
- 10:24Speaker 2: so I'd like to get that out there. But then
- 10:27Speaker 2: at the end of the night, so Connie sends me
- 10:29Speaker 2: a link while we're on our way to Albuquerque, probably
- 10:31Speaker 2: sitting in the Southwest seats, she sends me a link
- 10:34Speaker 2: to a hotel that she found that's like thirty minutes
- 10:37Speaker 2: outside of where we're supposed to stay at the airport hotel,
- 10:40Speaker 2: and she's like, what about this?
- 10:42Speaker 3: First, I was like, could we switch and stay at
- 10:45Speaker 3: this nice hotel?
- 10:47Speaker 2: Well exactly, And I was like, I just don't think
- 10:49Speaker 2: we can do that because we can't ditch Jane, Like
- 10:53Speaker 2: we have to stay at the airport hotel.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Too, right, And no, of course we couldn't ditch Jane.
- 10:58Speaker 2: No, of course, and we did it. And so then
- 11:00Speaker 2: after we were done early like nine, and Connie's like, well,
- 11:03Speaker 2: let's just at least go get a drink at this
- 11:04Speaker 2: hotel that she found that was like thirty minutes out
- 11:07Speaker 2: of the way. So we're driving and at this point
- 11:09Speaker 2: we've picked up a couple of other people, some of
- 11:11Speaker 2: Jane's Climate pac people. They're in the car with us,
- 11:14Speaker 2: and then there was a couple of people meeting us there.
- 11:16Speaker 2: And so we get to this really cool place, this
- 11:18Speaker 2: like hotel outside or I think in Albuquerque, but outside
- 11:21Speaker 2: off the beaten drack, and Jane's like, it's really far.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I'm really tired. How long is this going to take?
- 11:26Speaker 2: We were in the car longer than we expected. It
- 11:29Speaker 2: was about a thirty minute drive, and Jane is kind
- 11:31Speaker 2: of getting a little antsy, like, oh God, is this
- 11:33Speaker 2: worth it?
- 11:33Speaker 3: It's not on the schedule at all. The Hilton Airport
- 11:38Speaker 3: was the next and.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Final stop, and Connie and I were like, Jane, you
- 11:42Speaker 2: can go to bed like Connie and I'll just go
- 11:44Speaker 2: it's no big deal. And she's like, m I'll come
- 11:46Speaker 2: with you. I'll come with you. So we get there.
- 11:48Speaker 2: It's like a thirty minute drive. We get there, we see,
- 11:51Speaker 2: you know, we're kind of like worried, like I don't
- 11:53Speaker 2: want to We don't want to annoy her. I don't
- 11:55Speaker 2: want to annoy her. I don't want to keep her
- 11:57Speaker 2: out later than she wants to be out. I don't
- 11:58Speaker 2: want to be responsible for her drink thinking or anything
- 12:01Speaker 2: you know that's related to me. I get in trouble
- 12:03Speaker 2: for everyone's bad behavior, you know. So I so then
- 12:07Speaker 2: we have drinks. It ends up being a lovely night.
- 12:10Speaker 2: We order some snacks. I think we had a couple
- 12:12Speaker 2: of drinks. There was like six or seven of us
- 12:14Speaker 2: by this time, and as we're walking out the door,
- 12:17Speaker 2: Jane says, Oh, I'm actually so glad we came here.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Thank you, Chelsea for picking this place out, and I've
- 12:27Speaker 2: got You're welcome.
- 12:28Speaker 3: All the time, like I'm getting blamed as she's getting
- 12:32Speaker 3: more and more tired, more and more stressed, like why
- 12:36Speaker 3: are we going to this place?
- 12:38Speaker 2: And then she then I get credited with with the win, and.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I, by the way, you take off the next morning,
- 12:45Speaker 3: and I go, I go on to the next the next.
- 12:48Speaker 2: Yea, where did you guys go from there?
- 12:50Speaker 3: Well? Wait, that was Albuquerque. So then we went to
- 12:54Speaker 3: San Sancho Pez. No, wait, San Jose, San Antonio, Mexico,
- 13:02Speaker 3: New Mexico, New Mexico, the big town in Mexico. The police.
- 13:08Speaker 2: No, okay, let's start, let's start, okay, okay, she's from Dartmouth.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Every once she went to Dartmouth, just so you know.
- 13:15Speaker 2: And she speaks Mandarin, but she doesn't know where San Antoni.
- 13:18Speaker 3: Thank you, you know what. You should have been able
- 13:21Speaker 3: to think of that too, Santa Fe, Thank you, Catherine.
- 13:26Speaker 1: No problem.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Okay, So back to Connie. When I see Connie on television,
- 13:32Speaker 2: I sent her a screen grab when I saw her
- 13:35Speaker 2: playing Dirty John with the woman that got duped by
- 13:39Speaker 2: this lunatic loser. He wasn't even that much of a lunatic.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That's how kind of slow on the uptake this woman was.
- 13:45Speaker 3: He was too a lunatic.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I guess so, I.
- 13:49Speaker 3: Mean compared to the guys you date, But yes, he
- 13:52Speaker 3: was a luminis.
- 13:55Speaker 2: I take screen grabs of Connie's faces and I just
- 13:58Speaker 2: send them to her, like, how can anyone take your
- 14:01Speaker 2: acting seriously?
- 14:03Speaker 3: You know?
- 14:03Speaker 2: And I forget what was the last? You're in everything,
- 14:06Speaker 2: So it's impossible to avoid Connie Britton. You guys, if
- 14:08Speaker 2: you're watching, you've seen her in everything. In fact, I
- 14:11Speaker 2: started watching that new series on Netflix, and you were
- 14:13Speaker 2: in it, and I was so excited, and then and
- 14:15Speaker 2: then you die in it, but then you come back
- 14:19Speaker 2: and the mashbacks. I forget what that? No, that was
- 14:22Speaker 2: a series.
- 14:24Speaker 3: No, the Life List? A Life List is a movie.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Oh I thought it was a series. Okay, So then
- 14:29Speaker 2: I did watch it. I thought I only watched the
- 14:30Speaker 2: first episode.
- 14:32Speaker 3: That was the whole. That was the whole. It's because
- 14:35Speaker 3: it's a movie.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Technically you did watch the first episode.
- 14:40Speaker 2: Okay. But now Connie has a new series. It's called
- 14:43Speaker 2: The Motherhood, and she's been talking about this for about
- 14:46Speaker 2: two years because she is she's adopted a son. About
- 14:49Speaker 2: how many years ago did you adopt your son? Fourteen
- 14:53Speaker 2: fourteen years ago. Okay, so pretty recent. So she adopted
- 14:56Speaker 2: her son. She adopted her son fourteen years ago as
- 14:59Speaker 2: a single and she is very passionate, and it has
- 15:03Speaker 2: always been very passionate. I can attest to this, to
- 15:06Speaker 2: the plight of single mothers and to the plight of
- 15:09Speaker 2: what it takes for a mother to raise a child,
- 15:12Speaker 2: not only in this world just as a job. It
- 15:15Speaker 2: is a job, a full time job, one that I
- 15:17Speaker 2: have chosen not to participate in. So talk to us
- 15:20Speaker 2: about your series, Connie, because.
- 15:22Speaker 3: By the way, you've been hearing me talk about this
- 15:24Speaker 3: for longer than two years, because I've been working on
- 15:27Speaker 3: this for so long, because I saw the whole idea
- 15:30Speaker 3: came to me while I was in Nashville, because basically
- 15:33Speaker 3: I adopted Yobi and then immediately moved to Nashville to
- 15:37Speaker 3: do the show Nashville, and I was like a brand
- 15:42Speaker 3: new mother. I had no support system. I didn't know
- 15:46Speaker 3: anybody in Nashville. I started working eighteen hour days, was
- 15:49Speaker 3: so crazy, and I had this new baby. I'm like,
- 15:53Speaker 3: what do I do with it? Like, I don't know,
- 15:55Speaker 3: I don't know how, And it was quite traumatizing and
- 15:59Speaker 3: so so anyway, I figured it out. I started. I
- 16:03Speaker 3: created like an amazing support system there, like was they people.
- 16:07Speaker 2: How did you figure it out?
- 16:08Speaker 3: Though it took a long time. And by the way,
- 16:11Speaker 3: I don't I don't mean to say that, like, oh yeah,
- 16:13Speaker 3: so I figured it out because I figured no. But
- 16:15Speaker 3: what the main thing that saved my life basically was
- 16:20Speaker 3: that I slowly started to create a community. And that
- 16:26Speaker 3: started actually with I think you've met these guys with me,
- 16:29Speaker 3: Like Nathan Followell he's the drummer in the Kings of
- 16:31Speaker 3: Leon and his wife Jesse Balen were the only people
- 16:34Speaker 3: in Nashville that I knew, and they had I'd met
- 16:37Speaker 3: them because they had come to the set of Friday
- 16:38Speaker 3: Night Lights. Nathan had brought Jesse as like a surprise
- 16:42Speaker 3: to visit the set of Friday Night Lights and we
- 16:45Speaker 3: had had like some crazy night with them, and so
- 16:48Speaker 3: I remembered, I'm like, wait, I think those guys live
- 16:50Speaker 3: in Nashville. So I called them up and so because
- 16:54Speaker 3: thanks to them, like I started like I had like
- 16:56Speaker 3: a little bit like of it was like somebody to
- 16:59Speaker 3: hold on to you. And then they kind of introduced
- 17:01Speaker 3: me to their community and then crazy, I think, you
- 17:04Speaker 3: know this story. But after one year on the show,
- 17:07Speaker 3: the house next door to theirs went on the market
- 17:10Speaker 3: and I bought it, so I was able to live
- 17:14Speaker 3: next door to them, which also and then they had kids,
- 17:16Speaker 3: and so Yobi and their kids like we're kind of
- 17:18Speaker 3: growing up together and anyway, but what I realized is
- 17:21Speaker 3: it's all about community. And also in Nashville, I had
- 17:24Speaker 3: another friend who was working on the show in costumes.
- 17:28Speaker 3: She was a single mom of four kids, and she
- 17:32Speaker 3: was working these crazy eighteen hour days without a break,
- 17:35Speaker 3: and she didn't have Like, at least I could afford
- 17:39Speaker 3: a nanny, which I needed. I would not have been
- 17:42Speaker 3: able to do it without that. But I recognize, like
- 17:46Speaker 3: so many single moms don't have the resources that I have,
- 17:49Speaker 3: and you still have to do it. And so they're
- 17:52Speaker 3: out working three jobs at a time or all these
- 17:54Speaker 3: long hours. And one day she calls me and she's like,
- 17:56Speaker 3: I forgot to give Jed lunch money, and I'm I
- 17:59Speaker 3: happen to be off that day, so I swing by
- 18:01Speaker 3: the local middle school and drop off, like Rayna James,
- 18:05Speaker 3: who's the character that I'm playing in Nashville, like just
- 18:07Speaker 3: drops off like five dollars in the front office for
- 18:10Speaker 3: like her kid Jed, and like at that moment, I
- 18:13Speaker 3: was like, I wish I'd love to start an organization
- 18:16Speaker 3: or something where single moms could just get you could
- 18:21Speaker 3: volunteer to like go grocery shopping or just hang out
- 18:26Speaker 3: with the kids for two hours, just to like give
- 18:28Speaker 3: single moms a break, you know what I mean. Anyway,
- 18:31Speaker 3: So that's kind of where it all started, the whole
- 18:33Speaker 3: idea of it, and it kind of emerged into I
- 18:37Speaker 3: got together with these guys at Scout who created Queer Eye,
- 18:41Speaker 3: and they love the idea because nobody's also really done
- 18:46Speaker 3: anything like this sort of talking about single moms, which
- 18:49Speaker 3: I think is another issue because there are so many
- 18:52Speaker 3: single moms in the world, not just the United States,
- 18:54Speaker 3: but in the world. Anybody that you talk to, if
- 18:57Speaker 3: they're not a single mom or weren't raised by a
- 18:59Speaker 3: single mom, they have somebody in their life who they
- 19:03Speaker 3: know and they're close to that's a single parent. And
- 19:07Speaker 3: so it's like as a culture, we don't really we
- 19:11Speaker 3: kind of just push single parents away, like that's not
- 19:15Speaker 3: a thing, and there's no support for you know, certainly
- 19:19Speaker 3: I mean at this point, but like there's no governmental
- 19:22Speaker 3: like any kind of anything in place in terms of
- 19:25Speaker 3: giving support to single parents, and I just was like,
- 19:29Speaker 3: I want to change the narrative about that and like
- 19:33Speaker 3: create respect for these people who are doing this heroic
- 19:36Speaker 3: thing which is being single parents and doing it by themselves,
- 19:42Speaker 3: and also help to create a community for single parents
- 19:46Speaker 3: so that they can not feel alone in it. Because
- 19:48Speaker 3: I also what I found like shooting the show is
- 19:50Speaker 3: it's one of the big things is it's so hard,
- 19:54Speaker 3: especially for women, to ask for help, and so they
- 19:57Speaker 3: think that they're supposed to do it all by themselves
- 20:00Speaker 3: and it's so isolating and challenging and kind of impossible,
- 20:05Speaker 3: like you can't do it by yourself. And so the
- 20:08Speaker 3: whole point of the show is like create community.
- 20:12Speaker 2: And well, first you gather a bunch of single mothers
- 20:14Speaker 2: who are also you know, who are going through it, right,
- 20:17Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, take us through it.
- 20:19Speaker 3: Oh well, so on the show itself, like we yes,
- 20:22Speaker 3: we basically there are six episodes. Each episode, we have
- 20:25Speaker 3: a single mom who you know, of course, every person
- 20:29Speaker 3: has their own set of circumstances, and we have three
- 20:33Speaker 3: women who are our experts and I call them the
- 20:36Speaker 3: neighbor Ladies, named after the women that when I was
- 20:40Speaker 3: growing up, Like I grew up in Virginia on a
- 20:42Speaker 3: cul de sac, and like every day at five o'clock,
- 20:45Speaker 3: the neighbor ladies from around the cold de sac would
- 20:48Speaker 3: come over to my mom to our house, and like
- 20:51Speaker 3: they'd all have like their glass of wine or their
- 20:53Speaker 3: cocktail and like have like whatever cheese and crackers and
- 20:58Speaker 3: just like talk about their days and like that was
- 20:59Speaker 3: their support system. And so I grew up watching that,
- 21:03Speaker 3: and that made me realize, like, oh, like my mother
- 21:06Speaker 3: is even my mother wasn't even a single mom. But
- 21:08Speaker 3: I'm like, you can't do this, but like they rely
- 21:10Speaker 3: on each other to get through the day raising their kids.
- 21:15Speaker 3: And so anyway, so we called the three mom experts
- 21:19Speaker 3: on the show the neighbor Ladies. One of them is
- 21:22Speaker 3: sort of a style but it's kind of a self
- 21:25Speaker 3: love style person, and then one is a parenting coach,
- 21:29Speaker 3: and then one is a DIY home renovation person. They're
- 21:34Speaker 3: all amazing, all three of them. And so each week
- 21:37Speaker 3: we have a new single mom and then our three
- 21:40Speaker 3: neighbor ladies will kind of go in and create magic
- 21:44Speaker 3: for them and help them, help to guide them so
- 21:46Speaker 3: that they can have sustainable things that can help them
- 21:50Speaker 3: as they continue to raise their child and do their
- 21:53Speaker 3: jobs and do all the things that they're doing in
- 21:55Speaker 3: the world. And then ultimately we're creating a community with
- 21:58Speaker 3: all of these.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Moms and that's a yes, a very beautiful thing. What's
- 22:03Speaker 2: your friend's name again? The woman who Yobi's best friend.
- 22:06Speaker 2: They don't go to the same school, but Jimmy Tammy. Yeah,
- 22:10Speaker 2: I would like to know who her community is, who
- 22:12Speaker 2: her neighborhood ladies are.
- 22:15Speaker 3: Well, you know, that's a really interesting point because, first
- 22:18Speaker 3: of all, I'm hoping because next but we're already start
- 22:23Speaker 3: starting to talk about season two of the show.
- 22:25Speaker 2: It's on Hallmark. Everybody, you can watch The Motherhood on Hallmark,
- 22:28Speaker 2: and the first two episodes are out now.
- 22:31Speaker 3: But we shot the first season in Kansas City, which
- 22:35Speaker 3: was awesome. By the way, have you ever been to
- 22:36Speaker 3: Kansas City?
- 22:37Speaker 2: Of course, I've been in Kansas City. I'm a comedian.
- 22:39Speaker 2: I go to all the cities that you never want
- 22:41Speaker 2: to ever see the inside of, not the Kansas City
- 22:43Speaker 2: is one of them.
- 22:43Speaker 3: I really liked Kansas City.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Kansas City is cool. That whole area that midwestern Kansas
- 22:48Speaker 2: City is very cool.
- 22:49Speaker 3: Yes, I really liked it a lot, and we had
- 22:52Speaker 3: a beautiful time there. But next season, because I live
- 22:55Speaker 3: in LA you be starting high school next year, so
- 22:58Speaker 3: I'm like, it would be so much better. Or if
- 23:00Speaker 3: we shot I'd be able to be in the show
- 23:02Speaker 3: more if we shut shoot in LA. So we're looking
- 23:04Speaker 3: at that, and if we do, then Tammy will be
- 23:07Speaker 3: one of the moms next year. Oh yeah, I'm I'm like,
- 23:11Speaker 3: because she's definitely one of the people that also kind
- 23:13Speaker 3: of inspired this, you know, totally right, and so I
- 23:17Speaker 3: know it'd be so amazing, I know.
- 23:19Speaker 2: And I'm always inviting Tammy to come to one of
- 23:21Speaker 2: my Vegas shows and she's like, girl, you don't understand
- 23:23Speaker 2: what I would do to make that happen. She's like,
- 23:26Speaker 2: I want to come to Vegas. She's like, do you
- 23:28Speaker 2: understand I can never leave my child for one night
- 23:31Speaker 2: unless I have a like a fool proof plan for
- 23:34Speaker 2: him to spend the night.
- 23:37Speaker 3: And I'm just like with her mother, who like her mother.
- 23:40Speaker 2: The last time I flew somewhere to meet Connie was
- 23:42Speaker 2: for her. I went early to south By Southwest for
- 23:45Speaker 2: her birthday. We went, we had a nice dinner. I
- 23:48Speaker 2: don't know what was in the water, on the plane
- 23:51Speaker 2: ride I got, I took there, but something was in it.
- 23:53Speaker 2: It was this this guy had this brand deal, this brand.
- 23:56Speaker 2: It's called love Water, and they said it was just water,
- 23:59Speaker 2: but I'm convinced there was something else in there. And
- 24:02Speaker 2: when I got to that dinner, I was ready to
- 24:04Speaker 2: go and guess what's hot?
- 24:06Speaker 3: I was hot, hot, coming in hot.
- 24:08Speaker 2: I came in hot. And that night ended it around
- 24:12Speaker 2: two thirty in the morning. And the next morning I
- 24:16Speaker 2: had panels at south By Southwest, not one, not two,
- 24:19Speaker 2: five separate panels that started at nine thirty am, and
- 24:24Speaker 2: I got in at three thirty am, so I looked
- 24:27Speaker 2: like somebody punched me in the face. I didn't recover
- 24:29Speaker 2: from that night for two days.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Because of the water. Weird the weird waters.
- 24:33Speaker 2: No, because of everything that happened. After the water we
- 24:36Speaker 2: drank and then we went back to her friends house
- 24:39Speaker 2: and the people were smoking cigarettes. It just got It
- 24:41Speaker 2: was just one of those It was first of all,
- 24:44Speaker 2: I don't regret it for a second because it was
- 24:45Speaker 2: a really fucking fun night and I'm glad that I
- 24:48Speaker 2: was there.
- 24:48Speaker 3: But uh, of course, Austin.
- 24:51Speaker 2: But it took me a couple days to really get
- 24:53Speaker 2: my head back on straight after the after the first
- 24:56Speaker 2: day of five panels, because there were so many fun
- 24:57Speaker 2: things going on at south By Southwest. My assistant was
- 25:00Speaker 2: there and he's like, Okay, so do you want to
- 25:01Speaker 2: go to this dinner with this person? And this person's
- 25:03Speaker 2: I go dinner? Are you fucking kidding me? I have
- 25:06Speaker 2: to go to bed at five pm today because of
- 25:08Speaker 2: last night, as if it was somehow his fault.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Your assistant is so sweet.
- 25:13Speaker 2: I know, I know.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Wait, remind me his name again, McKinley.
- 25:22Speaker 2: That's a private joke.
- 25:24Speaker 3: That is a private joke, and we know that it's
- 25:26Speaker 3: not McKinley.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Okay, anyway, Okay, we're gonna take a break and we're
- 25:31Speaker 2: going to be right back with Connie Britton, the world's
- 25:33Speaker 2: best actress.
- 25:34Speaker 1: If you'd like advice from Chelsea, right into us at
- 25:36Speaker 1: Dear Chelsea podcast at gmail dot com. We'd love to
- 25:40Speaker 1: hear your questions for any juicy story you'd like advice on,
- 25:43Speaker 1: but this week we're specifically looking for questions about family issues.
- 25:46Speaker 2: If you have an issue with a family member or
- 25:48Speaker 2: you need.
- 25:48Speaker 1: Advice about a specific relationship issue, please write in at
- 25:52Speaker 1: Dear Chelsea Podcast at gmail dot com.
- 25:58Speaker 2: We're rack with Connie Britton. Hey, Connie, I have an
- 26:00Speaker 2: acting question for you. Do you ever have a have
- 26:02Speaker 2: you ever had? Because you've been in everything? I mean,
- 26:05Speaker 2: just to name a few, as you named, you were
- 26:07Speaker 2: in Friday Night Lights, you were in Nashville, you were
- 26:11Speaker 2: in White Lotus.
- 26:13Speaker 3: Your favorite dirty John, Dirty John.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Yes, that's just to name a few. Her resume is endless.
- 26:19Speaker 2: Do you ever have a crisis of confidence when you're
- 26:21Speaker 2: acting or have you had one about your performance? I,
- 26:28Speaker 2: of course I always have a crisis of confidence, Like,
- 26:31Speaker 2: isn't that part of being an artiste? I guess so,
- 26:34Speaker 2: I just feel like you always feel. I mean, I've
- 26:37Speaker 2: never seen that side of you. Even though I joke
- 26:40Speaker 2: about you being bad at acting, I know you're not,
- 26:43Speaker 2: and I know you're very talented. And I wonder if
- 26:45Speaker 2: someone who says established and as experienced, like the hours
- 26:49Speaker 2: of experience that you have accrued.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that erose is legit. That ten thousand hours thing.
- 26:57Speaker 3: One of the things that I've noticed in my fifties.
- 26:59Speaker 3: It's a maaze, is that ten thousand hours thing. Like
- 27:05Speaker 3: I feel much more like I can access whatever that
- 27:11Speaker 3: thing is that I need to be able to do
- 27:14Speaker 3: a scene and create a character. It's it's like I
- 27:18Speaker 3: have much more immediate connection to that, Whereas when I
- 27:22Speaker 3: was younger, I think I would, you know, I kind
- 27:24Speaker 3: of have to really like it was more cerebral and
- 27:27Speaker 3: I'd have to really like dig down and that kind
- 27:29Speaker 3: of thing. And now I think that, you know, it's
- 27:32Speaker 3: the after ten thousand hours, it becomes a little bit
- 27:34Speaker 3: more immediate and so that, but that doesn't titt necessarily
- 27:38Speaker 3: take away from every time I start a character. It's funny.
- 27:43Speaker 3: I actually literally this just this last week finished shooting.
- 27:48Speaker 3: We're doing a sequel to The Brothers McMullen. All the
- 27:52Speaker 3: Family McMullen. The Brothers McMullen was my big break movie
- 27:56Speaker 3: that happened in nineteen ninety five, and that movie is
- 28:01Speaker 3: like like it takes place on Long Island and it's
- 28:04Speaker 3: like pretty thick like Long Island accent, and you know,
- 28:07Speaker 3: I did the part thirty years ago. So it's always
- 28:10Speaker 3: a thing like, oh, what is I don't I guess
- 28:14Speaker 3: I know what this character is. I don't know. But
- 28:16Speaker 3: every time I first step foot on set and the
- 28:18Speaker 3: camera starts to roll, I'm kind of like, what am
- 28:22Speaker 3: I going to sound like as this character. I don't know,
- 28:24Speaker 3: it's super nerve wracking, like it's access.
- 28:27Speaker 2: They're probably intimidating, I could.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Imagine, but it's also just even a leap of faith,
- 28:31Speaker 3: even if it's not with an accent. It's just kind
- 28:33Speaker 3: of like, I don't really know, I'm just figuring it
- 28:37Speaker 3: out as I go, kind of thing. You have to
- 28:39Speaker 3: jump off a cliff a little bit every time.
- 28:41Speaker 2: How is it meeting Robert de Niro on set? I mean,
- 28:44Speaker 2: I'm sure you've met him before, butting your.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Your lover, your passion and your pat your lover, passion,
- 28:52Speaker 3: Robert Tiro, my baby daddy, your baby daddy. It was amazing,
- 28:57Speaker 3: Are you kidding? It was like the I mean, he's
- 29:01Speaker 3: just he's so nice. He's a really nice guy. He's
- 29:05Speaker 3: got such an incredible work ethic, also a guy in
- 29:08Speaker 3: his eighties, and he just works his ass off and
- 29:13Speaker 3: so and he's just kind of a normal guy. And
- 29:15Speaker 3: he would just talk to me like, how are you
- 29:17Speaker 3: learning all these lines? You know? These lines? Are you
- 29:19Speaker 3: know what I mean? And it was interesting for me
- 29:22Speaker 3: because it was a little bit like it was his
- 29:24Speaker 3: first time doing television, which you know, I've been doing
- 29:26Speaker 3: for a long time, and so it was almost like
- 29:30Speaker 3: he was kind of looking to me like, oh, yeah,
- 29:32Speaker 3: how do you do this kind of thing? I'm like,
- 29:33Speaker 3: who me?
- 29:34Speaker 2: What's so demirror?
- 29:37Speaker 3: But yeah he I. It was very exciting meeting to Nero.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Okay, so we're gonna move to Callers, Connie, try and
- 29:43Speaker 2: give some advice we need. Okay, put on your.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Stage callers collar. We have people.
- 29:49Speaker 2: It's called Dear Chelsea. It's like dear Abby, but with me.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Oh god, guys. So our first question comes from Laura.
- 29:58Speaker 1: She says, Dear Chelsea, I'd love some advice on this.
- 30:01Speaker 1: One of my best friends since high school is thirty
- 30:03Speaker 1: nine and so ready to meet someone and start a family.
- 30:06Speaker 1: She's beautiful, a doctor, she even designed and built her
- 30:09Speaker 1: own house. All she needs is to meet a decent
- 30:11Speaker 1: man and she's ready to go. She wants a family
- 30:13Speaker 1: so bad. She's also frozen her eggs, so she has
- 30:15Speaker 1: a backup plan, but she really doesn't want to resort
- 30:18Speaker 1: to it. She feels the clock is sticking. I don't
- 30:20Speaker 1: understand why she can't find someone. She's such a catch.
- 30:23Speaker 1: She's kind, she's active, She's keys a lot in Canada too,
- 30:27Speaker 1: She's been on the apps for literally years, and men
- 30:29Speaker 1: are either intimidated by her or they're quote just not
- 30:32Speaker 1: ready to think about a family. I constantly put it
- 30:34Speaker 1: out to people I know, to oh, hey, if you
- 30:36Speaker 1: know any single guys, and it's just not working. To
- 30:39Speaker 1: throw a bit of a wrench in her search. She
- 30:41Speaker 1: met a guy online a year ago who lives across
- 30:43Speaker 1: the country who she keeps holding out hope for. He's
- 30:45Speaker 1: the same cultural background as her, which I feel she
- 30:48Speaker 1: sees as an added fairytale esque bonus, but he keeps
- 30:51Speaker 1: disappointing her, not making an effort in communication or plans
- 30:54Speaker 1: to see her unless it conveniently just happens, example, randomly
- 30:59Speaker 1: being in the same city in Europe one day and
- 31:01Speaker 1: meeting up. She's been very straight up with him about
- 31:03Speaker 1: what she wants, and it's frustrating that he keeps stringing
- 31:05Speaker 1: her along but not committing.
- 31:07Speaker 2: I tell her I.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Was just a sign of the times and it's not her.
- 31:10Speaker 1: I also tell her what an inspiration she is, especially
- 31:13Speaker 1: if she does decide to be a mother alone. And
- 31:14Speaker 1: I'm wondering how I can support her. I need Chelsea's wisdom.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Laura. First of all, Hi Laura. This is our special
- 31:21Speaker 2: guest Connie Britton today.
- 31:22Speaker 3: You're Laura, like Laura from the letter.
- 31:27Speaker 2: Well, she's Laura from the letter, but she's talking about
- 31:30Speaker 2: her friend in the letter.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Is it your friend, Laura my friend? No? Really, it
- 31:39Speaker 3: really is.
- 31:39Speaker 1: When I talk to Laura, she had like babies and test.
- 31:45Speaker 2: A detective show.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Okay, this is.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Honestly, I'm sorry about her. I'm sorry anyway.
- 31:54Speaker 3: Let's just be real.
- 31:55Speaker 2: I think you should encourage your friend to go ahead
- 31:58Speaker 2: and not be holding out for any fucking man to
- 32:01Speaker 2: have her babies. If she is passionate about becoming a mother,
- 32:04Speaker 2: and she has her eggs frozen, and she has her
- 32:06Speaker 2: shit together and her life together, fucking go for it.
- 32:09Speaker 2: She could be waiting another ten years before she finds
- 32:11Speaker 2: the right guy. Connie didn't meet her right guy until
- 32:14Speaker 2: you were what fifty Connie, have you guys been together?
- 32:17Speaker 3: Yeah? No, fifty two, fifty fifty two, fifty two. I
- 32:21Speaker 3: can actually speak to this too, Laura, even though I
- 32:25Speaker 3: thought maybe you were the friend, uh I, because frankly,
- 32:30Speaker 3: this was I adopted my son as a single mom
- 32:33Speaker 3: because I kept thinking, Oh, I'm gonna meet the guy.
- 32:35Speaker 3: I'm gonna meet the guy. I'm gonna meet the guy. Yeah,
- 32:37Speaker 3: And I knew I wanted to adopt, just as your
- 32:39Speaker 3: friend knows that she wants to have babies and she
- 32:41Speaker 3: throws her eggs and so I finally was like, what
- 32:44Speaker 3: am I waiting for? And I did it, And I'm
- 32:46Speaker 3: just so glad that I did. I will say, how old.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Were you, Connie when you did it? You did it
- 32:51Speaker 2: fourteen years ago?
- 32:53Speaker 3: Four?
- 32:54Speaker 2: Okay?
- 32:54Speaker 3: Yeah, great, so encouraging. Yeah. So, but I will say,
- 32:59Speaker 3: you know, and she can watch my show that's coming
- 33:02Speaker 3: out on Monday, The Motherhood, because it's all about single
- 33:04Speaker 3: mom So it's helpful because the thing is you you
- 33:08Speaker 3: kind of need to know what you're in for when
- 33:10Speaker 3: you are going to be a single mom. But honestly,
- 33:14Speaker 3: it's so amazing if she, if she chooses to do that.
- 33:19Speaker 3: It's so amazing to be able to do that and
- 33:24Speaker 3: not feel like because otherwise it's it screws up your
- 33:28Speaker 3: thinking if you're sort of at the mercy of the
- 33:30Speaker 3: idea of like, I want to meet a guy so
- 33:32Speaker 3: I can have a baby.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I'm saying, yeah, totally yeah, And I've actually
- 33:37Speaker 4: just become a single mom too, So I'm I'm really
- 33:41Speaker 4: trying to did.
- 33:42Speaker 2: You kill yourselsband? But yeah, I have.
- 33:46Speaker 3: It's a personal question, Chelsea.
- 33:49Speaker 4: I have two kids, so I'm trying to really show
- 33:51Speaker 4: her that, you know, it's awesome alone.
- 33:55Speaker 3: So yeah, thank you so much.
- 33:56Speaker 2: You guys live near each other, you and your friend.
- 33:58Speaker 4: Yeah, we love We're going to Sana tonight, so okay,
- 34:02Speaker 4: ten minutes from each other.
- 34:03Speaker 2: That's great.
- 34:04Speaker 3: You're each other's community. You're each other because.
- 34:06Speaker 2: That's what we're talking about. Connie's news show is all
- 34:08Speaker 2: about this. It's not a hallmark and it's called motherhood,
- 34:11Speaker 2: and it's all about this. It's about, actually, for me,
- 34:14Speaker 2: a community with your friends who also are single parents,
- 34:17Speaker 2: so that you guys can help each other parent together,
- 34:20Speaker 2: you know, and be there for when the other person
- 34:22Speaker 2: isn't and having your kids spend time together like this
- 34:25Speaker 2: is exactly what we're talking about. So please don't ever
- 34:27Speaker 2: put anything on holds in the hopes that you're going
- 34:29Speaker 2: to meet the right guy. You never know when that
- 34:31Speaker 2: person is coming.
- 34:32Speaker 3: Awesome, I love it.
- 34:33Speaker 2: Thank you, Okay, great, thanks for calling. Thank you so much.
- 34:37Speaker 2: By Laura. Bye, It's Laura.
- 34:39Speaker 3: What a perfect question.
- 34:40Speaker 1: Wow, that was really quick yeah, we might even make
- 34:43Speaker 1: it to four questions.
- 34:44Speaker 3: We'll see.
- 34:45Speaker 1: So our next color is Stephanie, she says, Dear Chelsea,
- 34:49Speaker 1: I'm a high school teacher at a school in an
- 34:51Speaker 1: underprivileged area in Connecticut. Yes, they exist here. We're situated
- 34:55Speaker 1: around the richest towns in the state. I worked in
- 34:57Speaker 1: my school for my entire career eleven years. I just
- 35:00Speaker 1: finished my last ever degree, which will allow me to
- 35:02Speaker 1: be a school administrator. My dilemma right now is between
- 35:06Speaker 1: loving my job and wanting to be financially stable. My
- 35:09Speaker 1: job is literally my calling. I love my students, I
- 35:12Speaker 1: love my coworkers, and most days I truly just love
- 35:15Speaker 1: going to work and doing this job despite everything. However,
- 35:18Speaker 1: we're paid like garbage after school hours. I nanny for
- 35:21Speaker 1: a family and tutor the other days of the week
- 35:23Speaker 1: for more income, plus say nanny part time in the
- 35:25Speaker 1: summer when I'm off work. With my new degree, I
- 35:27Speaker 1: could move into an administrative position in one of the
- 35:30Speaker 1: richer towns next year and make way more money. But
- 35:33Speaker 1: I'm afraid that I won't find as much joy in
- 35:34Speaker 1: the business end of running a school as I do
- 35:36Speaker 1: in my current role. I need your advice. Do what
- 35:39Speaker 1: I love or work for a paycheck to afford a
- 35:41Speaker 1: comfortable life.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Stephanie Hi, Stephanie Hi, Hi, Stephanie Hi's Kattie Britton our
- 35:49Speaker 2: special guest today.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Oh, I'm blown away. She was a teacher too, in
- 35:55Speaker 3: one of her lives, in one of my lives, Yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 3: my acting lives.
- 35:59Speaker 2: I mean that's I feel conflicted. I read this thing
- 36:03Speaker 2: the other day from Bill Gates. There's a big tech conference,
- 36:05Speaker 2: a big climate conference, at a big tech conference last
- 36:08Speaker 2: week in San Francisco, and Bill Gates came out and
- 36:11Speaker 2: said that in ten years, all nursing jobs and all
- 36:14Speaker 2: teaching jobs will be done by AI. And if he
- 36:17Speaker 2: said that, then I think that's probably going to be true.
- 36:21Speaker 2: So I would normally say stick with your passion, but
- 36:24Speaker 2: I feel like you're already on your You've gotten you
- 36:27Speaker 2: had to get a degree, right, an extra degree to
- 36:29Speaker 2: become an administrator. You've worked for this. It's going to
- 36:32Speaker 2: be more financially secure for you. I feel like that's
- 36:36Speaker 2: your move.
- 36:38Speaker 3: I kind of agree with that, But can I just
- 36:39Speaker 3: ask one thing, which is, as you're thinking about it,
- 36:43Speaker 3: could you make a list of the specific things And
- 36:46Speaker 3: you kind of did in your letter but like the
- 36:49Speaker 3: specific things that you love about this specific job, because
- 36:55Speaker 3: then what you could do is, as you look to
- 36:58Speaker 3: something that's more lucrative for you and like it creates
- 37:01Speaker 3: a better lifestyle for you, you can try to see
- 37:04Speaker 3: if you can fill in those things in some way,
- 37:07Speaker 3: even if it's not this exact same circumstance, so that
- 37:10Speaker 3: you're not completely sacrificing what you love, you know, right, Yeah,
- 37:15Speaker 3: that makes sense.
- 37:16Speaker 2: But also don't downplay all the positive impacts you can
- 37:19Speaker 2: have as an administrator, Like, there are many things you
- 37:21Speaker 2: can do to also bring your self joy. It's not
- 37:24Speaker 2: going to be the same as being inside a classroom
- 37:26Speaker 2: every day, but you can influence the teachers. You can
- 37:29Speaker 2: provide comfort and safety for them. Like, there are a
- 37:32Speaker 2: lot of ways that you're going to find that you're
- 37:34Speaker 2: going to find yourself experiencing like fulfillment and joy in
- 37:38Speaker 2: your new job that you're not even yet aware of.
- 37:40Speaker 2: So don't think that that's not going to have any
- 37:42Speaker 2: of those aspects moving forward.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Yeah, right, yeah, I agree with you there.
- 37:46Speaker 5: I just I get worried because I see how people
- 37:49Speaker 5: who move into that role kind of ease away from
- 37:53Speaker 5: what I love to do in my job day to day,
- 37:55Speaker 5: and that's what scares me. It's like, am I will
- 37:58Speaker 5: I be allowed to break the mold and do that?
- 38:00Speaker 5: Or do I kind of have to fall into this
- 38:03Speaker 5: public school system of you know, you're in charge, you
- 38:05Speaker 5: have to be a little bit less fun.
- 38:07Speaker 3: Well that's the thing. You can be a leader in
- 38:10Speaker 3: that circumstance. Yeah, you can be the one to break
- 38:12Speaker 3: through that and like let it. And that's why it's
- 38:16Speaker 3: like making a list is a helpful idea because then
- 38:18Speaker 3: it's like, Okay, I want to include these things as
- 38:23Speaker 3: part of this job, which everybody says, oh, that's not
- 38:26Speaker 3: part of this job. It's like you're going to do
- 38:28Speaker 3: it differently, you know, that's an opportunity.
- 38:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you should go into it with a
- 38:33Speaker 2: whole with a whole bunch of energy about how you
- 38:36Speaker 2: were going to make this role special for you and
- 38:39Speaker 2: how it's going to work for you.
- 38:41Speaker 3: You know.
- 38:41Speaker 2: I'm sure there will be some limitations that you maybe
- 38:43Speaker 2: you don't foresee, or maybe you do foresee, but there's
- 38:46Speaker 2: always ways that you can actually impact and have change
- 38:49Speaker 2: in your environment, you know, and especially in a leadership role.
- 38:52Speaker 2: So like look at it like that, like oh now,
- 38:54Speaker 2: I'm going to get to influence and give like my
- 38:56Speaker 2: passion for teaching. You're going to be able to infuse
- 38:59Speaker 2: that into other teas that are working, you know, underneath you,
- 39:02Speaker 2: and you're gonna be able to like kind of set
- 39:03Speaker 2: the tone and set the vibe. And I mean nothing
- 39:06Speaker 2: needs that more now than education.
- 39:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:08Speaker 1: Yeah, you have obviously a little bit of a deadline
- 39:12Speaker 1: on this because you have to sort of make a
- 39:13Speaker 1: decision for this next year pretty soon. But like, if
- 39:16Speaker 1: you really feel, like, you know, I want to take
- 39:18Speaker 1: one more year as a teacher, Like I think that's
- 39:20Speaker 1: okay too, And like I think the extra stuff that
- 39:23Speaker 1: you have to do to make ends meet is kind
- 39:25Speaker 1: of a recipe for a burnout. So you know, if
- 39:28Speaker 1: it's not the right time now, do some soul searching
- 39:30Speaker 1: see if it is. If it's not, then maybe it's
- 39:32Speaker 1: next year or the following year. But you're going to
- 39:35Speaker 1: gain so much more time and bandwidth that, like Connie said,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you could do some volunteering with a group that like
- 39:41Speaker 1: fulfills what your job is currently fulfilling.
- 39:43Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been thinking a lot about it. I also
- 39:46Speaker 5: was thinking about it a lot this weekend. So I'm
- 39:48Speaker 5: so excited maybe proposing like more of a hybrid administrative role.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Yeah, it's my district.
- 39:53Speaker 5: That's something maybe they would be into if I could
- 39:55Speaker 5: still teach a few classes a day and then do
- 39:59Speaker 5: the leadership comp on it, sit through meetings and everything
- 40:01Speaker 5: like that.
- 40:02Speaker 3: So I was like, it couldn't hurt. I suppose to
- 40:05Speaker 3: just throw that out there.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Absolutely, Yes, ok, great way to keep your feet on
- 40:10Speaker 2: the ground and in touch with everything that's happening also,
- 40:12Speaker 2: you know, like in your administration.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 40:17Speaker 2: Okay, great, Well, this was a very high upbeat phone call.
- 40:20Speaker 2: I'm glad that we called, and I'm glad we could help.
- 40:22Speaker 2: And good luck with everything you're doing. The Lord's work
- 40:24Speaker 2: so much.
- 40:25Speaker 3: I know, seriously, that's the most what you're doing is
- 40:27Speaker 3: the most valuable thing we could ever ask. Thank you
- 40:31Speaker 3: so much, Thank you, Thanks to you all.
- 40:35Speaker 2: You know what I hope I hope that with this AI,
- 40:37Speaker 2: like everyone's so scared of AI. And I was reading
- 40:39Speaker 2: this article about how everybody was so scared of computers
- 40:42Speaker 2: in nineteen ninety three when Al Gore invented the Internet.
- 40:45Speaker 2: Everyone was so scared that that the computers were going
- 40:48Speaker 2: to take everybody's jobs. Everyone was freaking out. We don't
- 40:52Speaker 2: remember this because half of us weren't even born then,
- 40:54Speaker 2: but I was. And this article that I read reminded
- 40:58Speaker 2: me of that. And that's how people feel about AI.
- 41:00Speaker 2: And you know, AI is going to be used for
- 41:02Speaker 2: bad stuff, but it's going to be used for good
- 41:04Speaker 2: stuff too. Think about what we're dealing with with our
- 41:07Speaker 2: education department being assaulted in the way that it has
- 41:10Speaker 2: been with this administration. Wouldn't it just be the ice
- 41:13Speaker 2: cream on the cake for all of us or the
- 41:17Speaker 2: brownie for for AI to come in and educate the
- 41:20Speaker 2: fucking shit out of all of these kids in America
- 41:24Speaker 2: for free without school. Can you imagine how smart everyone's
- 41:27Speaker 2: going to be if everything that they are doing just
- 41:30Speaker 2: completely backfired? Anyway, No, anyone, Hello, I don't think I
- 41:37Speaker 2: think we're there yet. Well we're not there yet, but
- 41:39Speaker 2: what if that that's the silver lining?
- 41:41Speaker 3: What if that happened. I like that. I like that
- 41:44Speaker 3: point of view. Like I think, if that happened, that'll
- 41:46Speaker 3: be amazing.
- 41:46Speaker 2: I mean, if you you have to be motivated to learn,
- 41:48Speaker 2: but the people who are motivated to learn that want
- 41:51Speaker 2: AI tutors, and they want these you know, they're going
- 41:54Speaker 2: to be able to learn faster than anybody. I mean,
- 41:56Speaker 2: all the information's there, so as much as you have
- 41:59Speaker 2: a thirst for you're gonna get it.
- 42:01Speaker 3: M hmm.
- 42:01Speaker 1: I feel like best case scenario, teachers are able to
- 42:04Speaker 1: use it as a tool because, as our color just showed,
- 42:08Speaker 1: being a teacher is so much more than just like
- 42:09Speaker 1: providing information. It's like you are caring for these children.
- 42:13Speaker 1: You're listening to them when they're having an issue, You're
- 42:15Speaker 1: watching out for them, seeing if there's an issue at home,
- 42:18Speaker 1: sort of thing that like AI is never going to do.
- 42:21Speaker 1: But if you can take some of the burden off
- 42:22Speaker 1: of teachers, that's I think where the sweet spot would be.
- 42:25Speaker 3: I agree, Like, I think if we can be smart
- 42:27Speaker 3: about it and not just have it be like okay,
- 42:30Speaker 3: now it's AI and like fire all the teachers, right,
- 42:33Speaker 3: you know what I mean, Like, but instead understand the
- 42:36Speaker 3: value of who the teachers are and that they can
- 42:38Speaker 3: that the AI can actually be an assist to them,
- 42:40Speaker 3: so that maybe we're not burning out our teachers all
- 42:42Speaker 3: the time, you know, I mean, we already pay our
- 42:44Speaker 3: teachers total crap. So I don't know if it's going
- 42:47Speaker 3: to help that situation, but I don't know. I agree.
- 42:50Speaker 3: I think there's something where it could be. It could be,
- 42:53Speaker 3: it could always it could work to our advantage.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Yeah, well, let's take a quick break and we'll come
- 42:59Speaker 1: right back with quickie.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Please tag me for the special because I get so
- 43:03Speaker 2: many tags about my books, but I'm not getting as
- 43:05Speaker 2: many about my special, and my special is the newest
- 43:07Speaker 2: thing out, so I want to make sure all my
- 43:09Speaker 2: ardent fans are watching it and tagging me, and I'll
- 43:11Speaker 2: repost you. And yes, it's called the Feeling. Okay, we're
- 43:18Speaker 2: back with the star of the Motherhood, Connie Britton, the
- 43:21Speaker 2: executive producer and star of the Motherhood, which is a
- 43:24Speaker 2: new series on Hallmark. You can watch the first two
- 43:27Speaker 2: episodes now. And this is for anyone any parent who
- 43:31Speaker 2: is at home who is a single parent, or his
- 43:33Speaker 2: friends with someone who is a single parent, to gain
- 43:35Speaker 2: a better understanding of how important it is to build
- 43:38Speaker 2: a community. Okay, do we have one last caller?
- 43:42Speaker 1: Well, this was just an email, but let me do
- 43:45Speaker 1: one last question. So Liz writes, her subject line is
- 43:48Speaker 1: am I abusing my babysitter? Dear Chelsea? Right, Yeah, I'm
- 43:54Speaker 1: a thirty seven year old working mom, of two kids,
- 43:56Speaker 1: ages six and two. I'm fortunate to work four days
- 43:59Speaker 1: a week, and I worked really hard to get to
- 44:01Speaker 1: this place in my life. I have an incredible babysitter
- 44:03Speaker 1: whom my girl's adore, whose hours are seven thirty to
- 44:06Speaker 1: five thirty and Monday through Friday, and just as a reminder,
- 44:09Speaker 1: she only works at her job four days a week.
- 44:11Speaker 1: Since I had my first daughter, I felt conflicted about childcare.
- 44:15Speaker 1: A friend once said I didn't have kids so someone
- 44:17Speaker 1: else could raise them, and I felt that way too.
- 44:19Speaker 1: I've always had the goal of minimizing the amount of
- 44:21Speaker 1: time my kids spend with the babysitter, and I picked
- 44:23Speaker 1: them up right at five thirty, which is great on
- 44:25Speaker 1: my workdays. But I've also been using her on my
- 44:28Speaker 1: Fridays off so I can have some strongly desired alone time.
- 44:31Speaker 1: This felt like a win for me in terms of
- 44:33Speaker 1: prioritizing myself and my sanity. Today, I checked in with
- 44:36Speaker 1: her to make sure it's okay for me to continue
- 44:38Speaker 1: sending them to her on Fridays. She's a small daycare
- 44:41Speaker 1: center and they're the only kids there on Fridays. She
- 44:43Speaker 1: shrugged and said sure, but seemed hesitant. She works hard.
- 44:46Speaker 1: So I get it, but it triggered that old part
- 44:48Speaker 1: of me that felt like I have to spend every
- 44:50Speaker 1: free moment with my kids. As I'm typing this, I
- 44:52Speaker 1: also realize that it triggered the part of me that
- 44:55Speaker 1: needs to be completely self sufficient and never ask for
- 44:57Speaker 1: or accept help. God forbid, I be a birday to
- 45:00Speaker 1: anyone else. Don't worry. I'm in therapy. I've come so far,
- 45:03Speaker 1: but the situation is so hard for me. Honestly, I
- 45:06Speaker 1: don't feel like I need advice. What I need is
- 45:08Speaker 1: for someone who doesn't know and love me to tell
- 45:10Speaker 1: me it's not just okay, but good and necessary to
- 45:13Speaker 1: take time for myself. I know the real work is
- 45:16Speaker 1: to find that voice within myself, but I'm fucking busy,
- 45:18Speaker 1: so I need some help with this one. Sincerely, Liz Connie,
- 45:23Speaker 1: I mean the whole This is my show, Liz again,
- 45:27Speaker 1: please watch The Motherhood.
- 45:29Speaker 3: It's all about how hard it is for us to
- 45:32Speaker 3: ask for help and to feel like it's okay. Like
- 45:36Speaker 3: all six of the moms in all of our episodes,
- 45:39Speaker 3: each one of them spoke about how they feel like
- 45:42Speaker 3: they can't justify taking time for themselves. They can't justify
- 45:46Speaker 3: buying things for themselves, because if it always comes down
- 45:49Speaker 3: to time with their kid or the kid needs something,
- 45:53Speaker 3: and that's always going to take the first priority, and
- 45:55Speaker 3: that is how you literally destroy your own soul, and
- 45:59Speaker 3: a mom the destroyed soul is not helpful to their child.
- 46:03Speaker 3: And so it's like, I think what it begs you
- 46:06Speaker 3: to do is, first of all, really ask yourself, like
- 46:11Speaker 3: what do I need here? It's okay for me to
- 46:14Speaker 3: need help, and I have reasons why I need that.
- 46:18Speaker 3: And then just have a real conversation with your babysitter,
- 46:21Speaker 3: because what you don't want is that icky like yeah, sure,
- 46:25Speaker 3: but like there's some kind of like tension growing or
- 46:29Speaker 3: you know, resentment or whatever. It's like, be real about
- 46:32Speaker 3: it and be like this, you know this is important time.
- 46:35Speaker 3: Don't apologize. This is important time for me. I need
- 46:38Speaker 3: this time. But if it's a problem for you, let's
- 46:42Speaker 3: talk about what works for both of us. But it's
- 46:44Speaker 3: okay to stand up for and know that you need
- 46:50Speaker 3: your own time because it's going to make you a
- 46:52Speaker 3: better mother.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Period.
- 46:54Speaker 3: End of conversation, except for whenever you have to taste,
- 46:56Speaker 3: say Chelsea, I'm just going to agree.
