- 0:05Speaker 1: Hey, this is Anny and SMITHA. I'm welcome to stuff
- 0:08Speaker 1: and never told you production I hurted you. And today
- 0:19Speaker 1: for our classic we are bringing back one that I
- 0:24Speaker 1: was just reminiscing about my time in podcasting and my
- 0:28Speaker 1: time as a host, and specifically my time with Saver,
- 0:33Speaker 1: which was the first podcast that I hosted, and as
- 0:38Speaker 1: some of you know, it's come to an end after
- 0:40Speaker 1: nine years. We are hoping we'll get to like occasionally
- 0:44Speaker 1: pop back in me and my co host Lauren and
- 0:48Speaker 1: have Lauren over here because there's plenty of food topics
- 0:52Speaker 1: and gender. There's a lot of intersection there and Lauren's
- 0:55Speaker 1: got a lot of opinions about that. So I was
- 0:58Speaker 1: just thinking about this episode because it's kind of an
- 1:01Speaker 1: adjustment period for me. It's like my whole schedule, my
- 1:05Speaker 1: calendar every day, it's like, oh my god, I don't
- 1:09Speaker 1: do this.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I feel like forgetting something.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Yeah, Like it feels like I should be doing something
- 1:15Speaker 1: right and I'm like, oh no, I'm not. And it
- 1:19Speaker 1: was really sad and I really miss it. I think
- 1:21Speaker 1: I've like kind of come to terms with it more.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm working my way slowly through the listener mail and
- 1:28Speaker 1: that's so sometimes it'll bring bring those emotions up. But
- 1:32Speaker 1: I'm very grateful for the time that I had on it,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and I learned so much through it, both in like
- 1:39Speaker 1: terms of factually about food historically, but also just kind
- 1:45Speaker 1: of how don't you have a podcaster and a host
- 1:49Speaker 1: and so I'm really I'm really happy about that, and
- 1:53Speaker 1: I'm glad for the time I got to spend there.
- 1:55Speaker 1: But yes, if you haven't listened to it, you can
- 1:59Speaker 1: go check it out. It's not like it disappeared, so
- 2:02Speaker 1: still exist. But yes, please enjoy this classic episode. Hey,
- 2:12Speaker 1: this is Sanny and Samantha. I'm welcome to stephone never
- 2:15Speaker 1: told you protection if iHeart radio, and welcome to another
- 2:27Speaker 1: addition of Happy Hour. As always, if you're choosing to
- 2:33Speaker 1: imbibe whatever you're choosing to do, please do so responsibly. Samantha,
- 2:39Speaker 1: are you sipping on anything? You know?
- 2:42Speaker 2: It's been an odd morning full of stress, so I'm
- 2:45Speaker 2: keeping it with my water, but I'm also drinking a
- 2:47Speaker 2: little bit of coffee that I have left over because
- 2:50Speaker 2: I'm gonna need it.
- 2:52Speaker 1: But that's it from me. What about you? I have
- 2:55Speaker 1: my red wine. I have my red wine. I'm also
- 2:58Speaker 1: having a very stressful day. I'm having of stressful like
- 3:00Speaker 1: a couple of weeks, and today I was thinking of
- 3:04Speaker 1: all the topics I wanted to do, and so many
- 3:06Speaker 1: of them are sad, and I was like, I cannot
- 3:08Speaker 1: have that right now. Even my Star Wars one bummed
- 3:12Speaker 1: me out. I'm going to come back and talk about that.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It's like cool, but it's sad because like the scripts
- 3:18Speaker 1: of what would have been without Disney kind of came
- 3:21Speaker 1: out and I was like, oh my god, that was
- 3:24Speaker 1: so good. Anyway, I will come back and talk about
- 3:27Speaker 1: that later today. What I want to talk about is
- 3:32Speaker 1: something of a strange confluence is happening, Samantha. I don't
- 3:35Speaker 1: know if you know this. We have a Monday mini
- 3:37Speaker 1: coming up where we're going to be talking about our
- 3:41Speaker 1: anniversary of starting together as a host on the show,
- 3:46Speaker 1: even though that's not what we knew was going to
- 3:48Speaker 1: happen at the time. Turns out that happened on March
- 3:53Speaker 1: twenty seconds, twenty nineteen. That's when our first episode came out.
- 3:58Speaker 1: The first episode I Did Savor. The other show I
- 4:01Speaker 1: Do came out on March twenty second, wow, seven years ago.
- 4:08Speaker 1: So I thought, if you all will go with me
- 4:11Speaker 1: on this probably shorter trip, but I was gonna look
- 4:14Speaker 1: back at kind of me being a host and saver
- 4:18Speaker 1: and Sminty, just a fond look back seven years. So
- 4:25Speaker 1: I know I've told this story before, but I started
- 4:28Speaker 1: as a producer editor twenty ten. I was hired full
- 4:33Speaker 1: time twenty eleven. Our company is very confusing in that
- 4:38Speaker 1: I think we've gone through seven companies, not exaggerating. I'm
- 4:41Speaker 1: pretty sure it's seven. So at the time the company
- 4:45Speaker 1: was how stuff works. A lot of stuff has changed
- 4:48Speaker 1: that since, but I've essentially held the same job ish
- 4:53Speaker 1: since twenty ten, and I was the editor producer of
- 4:57Speaker 1: Sminty and then we kind of moved hands again. The
- 5:02Speaker 1: company did, and we became very video focused, and then
- 5:06Speaker 1: I was like the video producer force Minty, which those
- 5:10Speaker 1: videos are still up on YouTube and still find them.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Those were all me. Those are all me. But then
- 5:20Speaker 1: when Kristen and Caroline announced they were gonna leave, they
- 5:25Speaker 1: told me in person, I was like, well, I don't
- 5:29Speaker 1: know what I'm gonna do then, And unfortunately, I feel
- 5:35Speaker 1: like a lot of jobs are like this, but unfortunately
- 5:37Speaker 1: in this job there's always that insecurity of like, well,
- 5:41Speaker 1: that's the end for me. I guess there's nothing else
- 5:44Speaker 1: for me to do, so I thought I might like
- 5:46Speaker 1: lose my job. And then I went to I'm still
- 5:52Speaker 1: not sure why, but I went to south By Southwest
- 5:56Speaker 1: as part of our whole company. It was like a
- 5:59Speaker 1: team of TEMI ten of us went and I was
- 6:02Speaker 1: making video editing video. It was a really busy experience,
- 6:06Speaker 1: and because I like planning things, I had planned like
- 6:12Speaker 1: months in advance, all of these like we've got to
- 6:14Speaker 1: get this barbecue here and this here and do this
- 6:16Speaker 1: and this and this, and everybody wanted to go with
- 6:19Speaker 1: me because I made the plans. You can't just go
- 6:23Speaker 1: to Franklin's barbecue fools. So after that friend of the
- 6:30Speaker 1: show who's been on here, friend in real life, Lauren Vogelbaum,
- 6:35Speaker 1: she sat me down and was like, I think you
- 6:37Speaker 1: should be on a show. I've been thinking about starting
- 6:41Speaker 1: this food show, and I think you would be great
- 6:45Speaker 1: on it. And I really deliberated about it because I
- 6:49Speaker 1: was nervous. I'd seen the hate people got, I'd had
- 6:54Speaker 1: to deal with it as an intern, I had to
- 6:57Speaker 1: answer listener mail as an intern, and so I was
- 7:01Speaker 1: really nervous about it, and I wasn't sure I was like,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I'm not really qualified, but the more Lauren talked to
- 7:07Speaker 1: me about what she was seeing, I was like, Okay, yeah,
- 7:10Speaker 1: I could do that, and so I agreed to do it.
- 7:14Speaker 1: And the first episode we did was on Sparkling Wine,
- 7:18Speaker 1: and I still remember what I wore because I'm so nervous.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Like it's not like I could see me. I was
- 7:24Speaker 1: so nervous. I remember exactly what I wore. I was like,
- 7:31Speaker 1: audibly nervous. I will never listen to that episode again.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Like I it wasn't bad, but it was just clear
- 7:37Speaker 1: I was so nervous. And I used to edit them
- 7:42Speaker 1: at the time, and when you edit yourself, it's not fun. Yeah,
- 7:51Speaker 1: but I really liked it, like I liked because I
- 7:54Speaker 1: if you've never listened to Savor, which I would recommend,
- 7:57Speaker 1: it's a very I liked the history part. It's so
- 8:01Speaker 1: it's structured in that Lauren does like the science basics
- 8:07Speaker 1: of what it is, and I do the history, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: there's some like it's not super strict, so sometimes she'll
- 8:13Speaker 1: put in history notes. But I liked that I got
- 8:18Speaker 1: to research history. Even though a lot of times people
- 8:21Speaker 1: will joke with me and they'll be like, I bet
- 8:22Speaker 1: that show is so much easier than Sminty is, and
- 8:25Speaker 1: a lot in a lot of ways it is. But
- 8:27Speaker 1: food is political and there's some dark stuff with food,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and you don't want to leave that out, and that's
- 8:36Speaker 1: you know, looking back over how I think I've improved
- 8:40Speaker 1: from when I started. Those are some of my biggest regrets.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Is I don't think I was the best at like
- 8:47Speaker 1: really searching for that stuff when I first started. But
- 8:51Speaker 1: it was really scared, Like I was scared. I used
- 8:54Speaker 1: to joke that I would It was like I was
- 8:56Speaker 1: on a plane in turbulence when I would record. And
- 8:59Speaker 1: in the first few episodes, if you listen to stuff,
- 9:03Speaker 1: you should know Jerry, who's like one of our big bosses.
- 9:06Speaker 1: She sat in on them like right there, like in
- 9:10Speaker 1: the small studio Savampa where she was sitting right there,
- 9:14Speaker 1: and I just she was the one who hired me,
- 9:16Speaker 1: so I knew her like I was so nervous. And
- 9:20Speaker 1: it's been a huge learning curve. And Lauren was very
- 9:23Speaker 1: helpful with that. She would send me kind of kind
- 9:27Speaker 1: but clear, Okay, we don't really do this, we don't
- 9:30Speaker 1: do it this way notes. That was really useful, and
- 9:35Speaker 1: especially in the beginning when I felt so like inadequate
- 9:38Speaker 1: and incompetent. And one of the things our company often
- 9:42Speaker 1: does are used to do. I'm not sure how much
- 9:45Speaker 1: they do it now, but what used to do is
- 9:48Speaker 1: when a new show starts, they get shows other shows
- 9:51Speaker 1: that are established to do ads for them to get
- 9:54Speaker 1: like attention to know that it exists. So a lot
- 9:58Speaker 1: of those ran for the show time. It's called food Stuff.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I'll get more into that in a second, but a
- 10:05Speaker 1: lot of those ran on Stuff you Should Know, which
- 10:07Speaker 1: is our biggest podcast in what we call the stuff brands,
- 10:11Speaker 1: like the first kind of how Stuff Works podcasts, and
- 10:16Speaker 1: we got so many you know what. I have never
- 10:21Speaker 1: proven this is where they came from, but we got
- 10:23Speaker 1: a lot of sexist comments from people that I think
- 10:24Speaker 1: we're expecting Stuff you should Know and then listened to
- 10:29Speaker 1: us and like the one that I remember most wasn't
- 10:33Speaker 1: even that mean. I just remember it was that you
- 10:35Speaker 1: giggle like two girls who got into their dad's like
- 10:38Speaker 1: our cabinet. Well, damn yeah, And I do giggle a lot,
- 10:45Speaker 1: like I know I do that, I do that in
- 10:47Speaker 1: real life. It's not something, but it made me really
- 10:50Speaker 1: anxious about it and I was like, oh, I shouldn't
- 10:52Speaker 1: laugh at all, and you know we're going to talk
- 10:56Speaker 1: about this. I'm sure when we do our kind of
- 10:59Speaker 1: look back, but when you're sometimes it becomes when you're
- 11:06Speaker 1: trying to hold back so much that it's obvious too,
- 11:09Speaker 1: Like sometimes like if I just giggle naturally, but I'm
- 11:13Speaker 1: trying so hard not to giggle, that becomes something that
- 11:17Speaker 1: will consense as well. Right food Stuff is one of
- 11:31Speaker 1: the last stuff shows, and I think we benefited from
- 11:37Speaker 1: that because it's really hard to launch a podcast, especially
- 11:40Speaker 1: now when there are so many, and I think we
- 11:43Speaker 1: did benefit from that, and we were pretty we were successful,
- 11:47Speaker 1: but it was it was like trying to find a
- 11:52Speaker 1: completely new formula stuff I've never told you Spente was
- 11:56Speaker 1: a different problem, and that there had been other hosts,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and then it was finding your voice within that. Right
- 12:04Speaker 1: Savor was sort of like make this thing to something
- 12:09Speaker 1: people like, it's just interesting. I both were hard, but
- 12:15Speaker 1: it was going on well. And then I believe it
- 12:19Speaker 1: was I don't know, dates of meaningless. We were told
- 12:24Speaker 1: we were told to rebrand basically because they wanted us
- 12:28Speaker 1: to be cooler, I think, which I'm like, why did
- 12:30Speaker 1: you have you ever listen to the show We're big nerds.
- 12:34Speaker 1: That's funny. Yeah, they wanted us to be cooler, so
- 12:37Speaker 1: they wanted us to travel, which was great, but it
- 12:41Speaker 1: was really stressful to travel. I don't want to make
- 12:44Speaker 1: it sound like I was so lucky. I got to
- 12:46Speaker 1: go to Hawaii, I got to go to New Orleans,
- 12:49Speaker 1: I got to go to Ashville, I got to go
- 12:50Speaker 1: to all these places. It was great, but it was
- 12:53Speaker 1: very stressful and it was something we were kind of
- 12:54Speaker 1: told you have to do, and that was another changing
- 13:00Speaker 1: of Okay, well then, how what is the formula of
- 13:03Speaker 1: the show now? Then? And so many great experiences about it,
- 13:09Speaker 1: but there's so many times I'm like, I wish we
- 13:11Speaker 1: had like one more day we spent that city, where
- 13:14Speaker 1: we could have done a better job if we'd had
- 13:17Speaker 1: more time. I'm really proud of what we did, don't
- 13:19Speaker 1: get me wrong, but it's just one of those things
- 13:21Speaker 1: where like, if you're taking other people's time for interviews,
- 13:23Speaker 1: which is what those shows mostly are, I would have
- 13:26Speaker 1: loved to have given them more space. But that was
- 13:31Speaker 1: a huge learning curve to you because I did most
- 13:34Speaker 1: of the producing on that, and like finding the who
- 13:39Speaker 1: we were going to interview, which was great because everyone
- 13:45Speaker 1: we've interviewed has been really kind and really giving. And
- 13:49Speaker 1: also it's cool because a lot of times they would
- 13:53Speaker 1: call other friends while we were there and be like,
- 13:55Speaker 1: you should talk to them. They're good, which is good.
- 13:57Speaker 1: That's a great side when people are like, Okay, you
- 14:00Speaker 1: know sometimes like the media comes in and you you're
- 14:03Speaker 1: expecting some kind of gotcha interview or something, but we're
- 14:07Speaker 1: just really curious. And then I believe at the same time,
- 14:13Speaker 1: that's when I was asked to be a host on
- 14:16Speaker 1: Spin Team, and that that was a really that was
- 14:21Speaker 1: also something I deliberated on for a long time. And
- 14:26Speaker 1: when I did that, you get a balance, you know,
- 14:29Speaker 1: two shows and figure all that out. And then after
- 14:33Speaker 1: a Bridget left, there was only me on tea and
- 14:36Speaker 1: that was a really stressful chesss full time. But then
- 14:40Speaker 1: you came to Samantha and I made for which.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I love going back over the outlines because I want
- 14:46Speaker 2: to talk about it. But I was like, oh yeah,
- 14:47Speaker 2: I just kept saying I'm staying.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Yes you did, and look, I'm glad you did. Yeah,
- 15:00Speaker 1: I just I'm I'm I'm excited to for Monday. I mean,
- 15:05Speaker 1: we did start with a very tough topic. But I
- 15:09Speaker 1: am excited to revisit that in Monday many But I
- 15:11Speaker 1: just thought, how interesting that these two things happened on
- 15:15Speaker 1: the same date, kind of a couple of years apart.
- 15:18Speaker 2: New Beginnings for you.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Twenty two is my favorite number.
- 15:22Speaker 2: It is.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Yeah, I didn't I didn't plan it, obviously, but hey,
- 15:27Speaker 1: look at that. The universe new, the universe new. And
- 15:32Speaker 1: I have been feeling weirdly, nostalgicallyly. I'm not sure why,
- 15:35Speaker 1: but so I've been thinking about this, and yeah, if
- 15:40Speaker 1: if you haven't listened to Savor, you can't. We do
- 15:44Speaker 1: talk about a lot of feminist stuff over on there.
- 15:47Speaker 1: There's a lot of crossover there, there really is. And
- 15:50Speaker 1: you've been on Savers and.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Lauren's been on here for a few a few times.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it's always a fun, fun crossover.
- 15:58Speaker 2: We still haven't done our supernatural one. Oh.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yes, that is hilarious to me that both you and
- 16:07Speaker 1: Lauren during the pandemic.
- 16:10Speaker 2: We found ourselves.
- 16:12Speaker 1: You went on a supernatural journey my friends, which we
- 16:17Speaker 1: did talk about Odd Smitty a lot when you and
- 16:20Speaker 1: I first started. Yes, but yeah, yeah, And we just
- 16:23Speaker 1: recorded our Savior anniversary episode with Super producers Dylan and
- 16:29Speaker 1: Andrew who used to be producers of Sminty, and we
- 16:33Speaker 1: talked about that for a little bit, but that was
- 16:35Speaker 1: one of the things I was thinking about too. Sometimes
- 16:37Speaker 1: we'll get questions from people, just you know, asking curious
- 16:43Speaker 1: about why.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Uh.
- 16:45Speaker 1: Sometimes people ask me like, why do you do it
- 16:47Speaker 1: this way and Savor in this way and Spinty. One
- 16:50Speaker 1: of the things that I find kind of humorous is
- 16:52Speaker 1: that on Savor, Lauren does the big thing at the end,
- 16:57Speaker 1: the social media thing, and then on Spinty I do it.
- 17:00Speaker 1: It's sort of because I was so like, I was
- 17:02Speaker 1: the newbie when I was on Saver, so I was
- 17:05Speaker 1: like too afraid to do it, and then when you
- 17:08Speaker 1: started it right.
- 17:12Speaker 2: The very few episodes that I've ever been by myself
- 17:15Speaker 2: and I've done it, I make sure to have your
- 17:17Speaker 2: script up because it makes me so nervous.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just funny because it's sort of like these
- 17:24Speaker 1: artifacts of things that I'm sure a lot of people
- 17:26Speaker 1: don't understand, but to us, it's just like, oh, yeah,
- 17:29Speaker 1: because I was doing it when Samantha wasn't there, so
- 17:33Speaker 1: I just kept going. But yeah, I'm so glad that
- 17:38Speaker 1: you and I found each other for this show, and
- 17:42Speaker 1: you helped me out both on this show and on
- 17:44Speaker 1: the SA by having some support. So thank you. Well.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Happy anniversary to both. Yeappy anniversary podcast aniversary.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I'll take it. I'll take it, yes, and happy podcast
- 18:02Speaker 1: aversary to you too well. Listeners. I hope that this
- 18:07Speaker 1: was in any way relatable and enjoyable, but I appreciate
- 18:12Speaker 1: you letting me go down memory lane. Yes for seconds.
- 18:15Speaker 1: I love it.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Thank you for sharing.
- 18:17Speaker 1: I still have so many things from that south By
- 18:19Speaker 1: Southwest trip because they give out so many free things,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you know that. I just I'm looking around like, oh, yeah,
- 18:25Speaker 1: I remember when I wrote that Parisvielle and they gave
- 18:27Speaker 1: me this. South By Southwest is a scene. It is
- 18:31Speaker 1: a scene. It is It's like a theme park at
- 18:34Speaker 1: one section. Wow, one day we should go. I want
- 18:38Speaker 1: to go.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Well, I kind of there's a whole lot of uh
- 18:41Speaker 2: controversy right now. But then also like, yeah, poor Texas.
- 18:45Speaker 2: I know Texas is trying though, Are people in Texas
- 18:48Speaker 2: are trying?
- 18:48Speaker 1: Yes? We support you, know, we do, We do support you,
- 18:51Speaker 1: We do absolutely well. Cheers to you, listeners, Cheers to you,
