2:00
Speaker 3: right coming up on the show this morning, only two
2:02
Speaker 3: weeks away from election day. State Senator Mike Stewart will
2:05
Speaker 3: be joining us a little bit later on. Always interesting
2:07
Speaker 3: to get his take on things, including he's taken an
2:10
Speaker 3: interest in some of these school consolidation proceedings in Kanawa County.
2:13
Speaker 3: We saw another one that was up for vote last night,
2:16
Speaker 3: the Knawa County School Board voting five to nothing to
2:18
Speaker 3: close that particular school. We'll get into that a little
2:20
Speaker 3: bit later on. Anthony Lewis from HD Media and the
2:23
Speaker 3: Touchdown City podcast is here. Anthony is like mister WVU sports,
2:27
Speaker 3: particularly football. There is a special event though that he
2:29
Speaker 3: and some other folks were organizing this Saturday night at
2:32
Speaker 3: Buffalo Wild Wings and Cross Lanes to help out some
2:34
Speaker 3: local charities. Of course, it's all wrapped around the WVU
2:37
Speaker 3: Arizona game. We'll get into that with Anthony a little
2:39
Speaker 3: bit later on. Plus, we're gonna be talking to candidate
2:42
Speaker 3: for West Virginia State Auditimiria Clater.
2:44
Speaker 6: She is in studio with us.
2:45
Speaker 3: We'll get to her momentarily, but right now, as we've
2:47
Speaker 3: been doing each morning since you started out on this trek.
2:50
Speaker 6: Let's go live to the road.
2:51
Speaker 3: Speaks to our man Rob Reel from her sister stations
2:54
Speaker 3: Superstar Country ninety six to one KWS, who set out
2:57
Speaker 3: last week on a quest to walk a big old
2:59
Speaker 3: check from her studios here in downtown Charleston to Children's
3:03
Speaker 3: a WVU Children's Hospital in Morgantown. Rob, good morning, welcome
3:06
Speaker 3: to the show.
3:08
Speaker 7: Good morning, and the road for the next couple of days,
3:11
Speaker 7: he is going to be thirty three one nineteen. I
3:14
Speaker 7: stepped off from the Why in Arnoldsburg this morning about
3:18
Speaker 7: an hour ago and making my way toward Normantown. Got
3:22
Speaker 7: a little farther yesterday than originally planned. So I'm shooting
3:26
Speaker 7: for only about fifteen miles today.
3:28
Speaker 6: And I saw that on your trek.
3:31
Speaker 3: And by the way, if you're not following Rob's walk,
3:33
Speaker 3: just go over to the KWS Facebook page because you
3:36
Speaker 3: can follow along and see exactly where he is and
3:38
Speaker 3: track his progress and whatnot. What do you attribute you
3:42
Speaker 3: being able to go a little farther yesterday.
3:44
Speaker 7: Rob, Mother nature has been fantastic. I got a nice
3:50
Speaker 7: rest full weekend. I made a few changes in my gear,
3:53
Speaker 7: let's say, and so I just everything kind of came
3:58
Speaker 7: together and I was able to get twenty in yesterday
4:01
Speaker 7: at the prospect of only having to do fifteen today. Actually,
4:06
Speaker 7: what's pretty helpful, so nice and easy, And I got
4:10
Speaker 7: to tell you, Mother Nature, Mountain Mama, West Virginia is
4:13
Speaker 7: just going off. If you do jump on board at
4:16
Speaker 7: ninety six to one kwus dot com, you start following
4:19
Speaker 7: us on social media on the face place and the
4:21
Speaker 7: instance nap, you're gonna see some of those pictures over
4:25
Speaker 7: the next couple of days of just how gorgeous it
4:27
Speaker 7: is right now in the Mountain State.
4:29
Speaker 4: It is.
4:29
Speaker 3: It's absolutely beautiful, and the fall colors, as you said,
4:33
Speaker 3: Mountain Mama is definitely showing off. The colors are absolutely beautiful.
4:37
Speaker 3: And because you are not allowed why I sounded like
4:40
Speaker 3: there was a straining of restraining order or something there,
4:42
Speaker 3: but you're not allowed to travel the interstate because of
4:45
Speaker 3: safety reasons. We didn't care if you travel the interstate,
4:48
Speaker 3: but the state Police thought otherwise, and Department Highways thought
4:50
Speaker 3: otherwise about that. You traveling some of these back roads
4:53
Speaker 3: up there, you're really getting to see. Even the colors
4:56
Speaker 3: are brilliant everywhere in West Virginia right now, but you're
4:58
Speaker 3: getting to see areas that are a little bit more
5:01
Speaker 3: brilliant if you.
5:01
Speaker 7: Will at some untouched places, some really good thick mountain
5:07
Speaker 7: side forests that I've seen. And I had a couple
5:11
Speaker 7: of a couple of individual hours yesterday more than an
5:15
Speaker 7: hour without a car passing me. That's how sequestered, how
5:20
Speaker 7: quiet this portion of walked over with panhandle cleaning and
5:24
Speaker 7: restoration has been. And eventually I'll start getting back to
5:28
Speaker 7: the busier places, like when I get to Weston later
5:31
Speaker 7: this week and then eventually Morgantown on Halloween afternoon.
5:34
Speaker 3: Now again, explain why it is that you are walking,
5:37
Speaker 3: other than just the exercise and taking in God's glory.
5:41
Speaker 7: Well, it is because I have a big mouth and
5:45
Speaker 7: no restraint. So during our Cares for Kids radioson in
5:48
Speaker 7: August and I was at the Hosteler Center at WVU
5:52
Speaker 7: Medicine Children's a beginning of date two, I proclaimed, I challenged,
5:57
Speaker 7: I implored that if folks beat last year's total in
6:02
Speaker 7: our radiothon that I would personally walk that check from
6:06
Speaker 7: eleven eleven Virginia Street, East, downtown Charleton to one Medical
6:10
Speaker 7: Center Drive in Morgantown and deliver it personally. I mean,
6:16
Speaker 7: I'm not surprised that West Virginians came through. I'm humbled
6:20
Speaker 7: by that, and I want to make sure that, out
6:22
Speaker 7: of respect for both folks who joined as superstar miracle
6:26
Speaker 7: makers and the kids themselves, that I keep my word.
6:30
Speaker 6: Indeed.
6:31
Speaker 3: All right, Rob, be safe out there again. There are
6:33
Speaker 3: worse things. I mean, you're getting to take in all
6:35
Speaker 3: the beauty of the fall in West Virginia, but you're
6:38
Speaker 3: also walking twenty miles a day to do it.
6:40
Speaker 6: Health holding up, okay, old man.
6:43
Speaker 7: Yeah, you know I'm hanging in there. They haven't threatened
6:46
Speaker 7: to send me to the Alpo rendering factory just yet.
6:50
Speaker 7: And we all remember, we've all had a Halloween where
6:53
Speaker 7: you know, you had to be a ninja and in
6:55
Speaker 7: a downcoat with you know, at thirty degrees and spitting
6:59
Speaker 7: rain and snow. Right, yeah, So the idea that the
7:03
Speaker 7: Mountain Mama is being so cooperative helping me along, somebody
7:07
Speaker 7: knock on some woods somewhere. That discontinues for another nine
7:09
Speaker 7: days or so.
7:11
Speaker 3: All right, Rob, be safe out there again. We'll be
7:13
Speaker 3: following along on the website and also on the social media's.
7:16
Speaker 3: I appreciate you being here, Man, Be safe. We'll talking
7:18
Speaker 3: again tomorrow morning. Thank you, sir, Rob real. He is
7:22
Speaker 3: on his way to Morgantown with that big old check
7:25
Speaker 3: for WVU Children's Hospital, walking about twenty miles a day
7:29
Speaker 3: to get it to Morgantown. Really, as he said, he's
7:31
Speaker 3: getting to enjoy some of the lovely, lovely colors in
7:34
Speaker 3: West Virginia as he makes his walk. Dave Allan showing

8:02
Speaker 3: want to bring in now Mary Ann clayt Or. She
8:04
Speaker 3: is an Democratic candidate for a West Virginia State auditor.
8:06
Speaker 3: She joined us now in the par marstore studio. Marianne,
8:09
Speaker 3: good morning, how are you?
8:10
Speaker 6: Oh fine? I'll give you a little bit of micro level.
8:13
Speaker 3: There you okay, okay, there, there you go, There you go, there,
8:16
Speaker 3: there you go.
8:17
Speaker 6: Now you're here, you're okay.
8:18
Speaker 3: The problem with this new studio, by the way, what
8:20
Speaker 3: do you think about our new digs here?
8:21
Speaker 6: You like this?
8:23
Speaker 8: I need to be around a little more people.
8:26
Speaker 4: Other than just me.
8:27
Speaker 6: Is that what you're saying?
8:27
Speaker 3: Come on, Mary, Anne, come on now, girl. It is
8:32
Speaker 3: a little bit smaller than what we're used to over there.
8:35
Speaker 3: But the problem of the problems is is that I
8:36
Speaker 3: can't really see I see the top of your head,
8:39
Speaker 3: and I can't see how close you are to the microphone.
8:41
Speaker 3: So I think you may need to scoot in just
8:43
Speaker 3: a little bit close to Mary Klator is a candidate
8:45
Speaker 3: for auditor here in the great state of West Virginia.
8:47
Speaker 3: And now, Mary, and you have run for this office before.
8:50
Speaker 3: What makes you think now is the right time for
8:52
Speaker 3: Marian Claytor.
8:54
Speaker 8: I'm not for sure you know if it about the
8:57
Speaker 8: right time. I just know that there is a continual
9:00
Speaker 8: need for somebody like me that actually has accounting an
9:04
Speaker 8: oddity experience, and I'm not one of those people that
9:11
Speaker 8: can be pushed around by either party.
9:14
Speaker 9: So I think it's time for.
9:16
Speaker 8: It now will I'm hoping that the people of West
9:20
Speaker 8: Virginia will be more I don't know how to say it.
9:28
Speaker 9: I don't.
9:32
Speaker 8: We'll be researching our candidates a little more because the
9:35
Speaker 8: people I run in on the streets, whether they're no
9:38
Speaker 8: matter what party they are, when I start talking about
9:40
Speaker 8: my experience and my vision, then they're like, you know what,
9:46
Speaker 8: this shouldn't be about politics. This should be about your
9:49
Speaker 8: experience that you have, and I'm going to vote for you.
9:52
Speaker 8: Of course, it's hard state. Why to reach it? You know,
9:54
Speaker 8: you can't reach everybody. I always said, if they could
9:58
Speaker 8: just meet me that I believe that they would vote
10:01
Speaker 8: for me, no matter you know, if they normally even
10:05
Speaker 8: vote straight Republican.
10:06
Speaker 3: I mean to talk about your experience because this is
10:11
Speaker 3: a game not you know that you've been around as
10:13
Speaker 3: a professional in a for a long long time doing
10:15
Speaker 3: the auditing auditor type thing. Talk about the experience that
10:18
Speaker 3: you've had that you think makes you qualified to be
10:20
Speaker 3: the state auditor.
10:21
Speaker 8: Well, I'm the only candidate actually has accounting degree and
10:25
Speaker 8: real auditing experience. I worked for twenty two years for
10:28
Speaker 8: the state Auditor's office. Started my business after my son
10:32
Speaker 8: became paralyzed from the neck down, continuing some of the
10:37
Speaker 8: work of preparing financial statements and providing training. And that
10:42
Speaker 8: is one of the reasons that I decided to run again,
10:46
Speaker 8: even though you know, our politics are so polarized, but
10:49
Speaker 8: I knew that the people of West Virginia needed me.
10:52
Speaker 8: The local governments need someone like me because I am
10:57
Speaker 8: out there on the ground, and that's what's so different
11:00
Speaker 8: and most politicians it's a figurehead. I don't want to
11:04
Speaker 8: be a figurehead. We deserve more than a figurehead. We
11:08
Speaker 8: just deserve somebody that understands the environment, that has a
11:12
Speaker 8: track record of making sure that our funds are being
11:16
Speaker 8: spent properly, people are being trained.
11:19
Speaker 4: We're on.
11:21
Speaker 8: We're in a state of emergency basically in local governments
11:25
Speaker 8: where there's being a turnover of people retiring and that
11:31
Speaker 8: knowledge has not been passed down and we don't have
11:34
Speaker 8: the staff available to go out and train them. And
11:38
Speaker 8: that is the best way to safeguard our money is
11:41
Speaker 8: to make sure people are properly trained and that we
11:45
Speaker 8: have somebody that is going to hold them accountable, because
11:48
Speaker 8: after they still are harder tax dollars, we hardly ever
11:51
Speaker 8: get that money back, so I want to be more preventive,
11:56
Speaker 8: and not to say I don't hold people accountable, because
11:58
Speaker 8: I mean I am known for that.
12:00
Speaker 3: But absolutely, yeah, you know, what, what exactly are the
12:05
Speaker 3: duties of state auditor? Because you know, the average person
12:07
Speaker 3: out on the street here, they know what a governor does,
12:09
Speaker 3: or they know, you know, what's.
12:10
Speaker 6: What their legislators do.
12:11
Speaker 3: But many people, when you throw out the term state auditor,
12:14
Speaker 3: you think, well, obviously it's going to have to do
12:16
Speaker 3: with numbers. But what exactly in your definition are the
12:20
Speaker 3: duties of the state auditor.
12:21
Speaker 8: So we, by co we are the bookkeeper for the
12:24
Speaker 8: state of West Virginia, so we are responsible for the expenditures,
12:28
Speaker 8: making sure they are in compliance, and the record keeping
12:33
Speaker 8: of those funds. But we also have this extra duty
12:36
Speaker 8: that is the supervisor of public offices, and in that
12:39
Speaker 8: capacity we audit the school boards, the municipalities, the county,
12:46
Speaker 8: all the elected officials at the county, magistra court systems,
12:51
Speaker 8: fire departments, board of Health, econog, development authorities, amulest Authority.
12:58
Speaker 8: There are lots and we're also responsible for the training
13:02
Speaker 8: of local governments. We're responsible for issuing guidance to the
13:06
Speaker 8: local governments. The funding that came down from the federal government.
13:12
Speaker 8: That definitely has to be we got to do a
13:15
Speaker 8: boost in making sure people are educated on how they
13:18
Speaker 8: can spend that money. I'm very concerned about the opioid
13:21
Speaker 8: settlement money because I'm not seeing the transparency and the
13:25
Speaker 8: money that was given to local governments.
13:29
Speaker 5: So we're we're.
13:30
Speaker 8: We're like the watch dog for the people of West Virginia,
13:34
Speaker 8: and we need to make sure that people can believe
13:37
Speaker 8: the numbers, that the information that's put out there it
13:40
Speaker 8: is secure. It can't that it is not that it's
13:43
Speaker 8: tamper proof. And I would be very for your friendly
13:48
Speaker 8: because I believe the citizens is the citizens' records. Of course,
13:52
Speaker 8: there are things, you know, there are some information that
13:54
Speaker 8: will have.
13:55
Speaker 4: To be.
13:57
Speaker 8: Redocted, but I believe they have the right to know
14:00
Speaker 8: how their money is being spent.
14:02
Speaker 3: Talking to Mary and later again, who is a Democrat
14:05
Speaker 3: nominee or a yeah, Democrat nominee for State Auditor of
14:08
Speaker 3: the State of West Virginia. The Dave Allen Show and
14:10
Speaker 3: five Eddy Live brought to you in part by Pinnacle Consultants.

14:15
Speaker 3: and sampling that analysis, comprehensive reporting and management planning. Visit
14:19
Speaker 3: Pinnacle Court dot net because what you don't know can't
14:21
Speaker 3: hurt you. Current state Auditor, of course, J. B. Mccusky
14:24
Speaker 3: is opting to run for and said the Attorney General,
14:28
Speaker 3: are you a fan.
14:29
Speaker 6: Of the of the of the state checkbook program that
14:32
Speaker 6: we have.
14:35
Speaker 8: I think it was a great idea that he actually
14:37
Speaker 8: got from Ohio, but we need to make sure. I
14:42
Speaker 8: don't like the way the information gets put in. I'm
14:45
Speaker 8: a big proponent on source documents, information coming straight from
14:49
Speaker 8: the source documents, and I have a relationship with some
14:52
Speaker 8: of the software companies that deal with our local governments,
14:57
Speaker 8: and just like it during the pandemic, we've always had
15:00
Speaker 8: where you could go look up if people pay their
15:02
Speaker 8: taxes and stuff, and so that they could pay that way.
15:06
Speaker 8: And I feel like in the larger counties that we
15:09
Speaker 8: in municipalities that we need to be able to have
15:13
Speaker 8: that we would share the link to that data and
15:16
Speaker 8: that that data would come straight from that system, not
15:19
Speaker 8: manipulate it before it gets to us, and then it
15:23
Speaker 8: would be real time.
15:24
Speaker 3: Also, do you have a website or Facebook page or
15:27
Speaker 3: something people could learn more about you?
15:29
Speaker 8: So it's audit thestate dot com and on there is
15:33
Speaker 8: the link to be able to get to the Facebook
15:35
Speaker 8: and the Twitter and.
15:37
Speaker 6: All the all the things.
15:38
Speaker 8: Yeah, all the things.
15:40
Speaker 3: So what have you heard when you're out on a
15:42
Speaker 3: campaign trail. I know that you spend some time. I've
15:44
Speaker 3: seen you, follow you on social media and seen you
15:46
Speaker 3: out of different events. What do you hear from the
15:47
Speaker 3: people of West Virginia.
15:49
Speaker 8: Well, some people had kind of stepped back. I feel
15:56
Speaker 8: like they just feel like their vote didn't count. So
15:59
Speaker 8: I try to explain to them that, you know, there's
16:02
Speaker 8: races where they've been won by one vote, and your
16:05
Speaker 8: vote always counts. That this is a popular vote, it's
16:09
Speaker 8: not like the presidency. And also for them, you know
16:11
Speaker 8: a lot of people concentrate just on the top and
16:14
Speaker 8: I'm like, you know, we have some really good candidates
16:17
Speaker 8: down ballot. They're very qualified for their positions, and that
16:20
Speaker 8: we have to be careful whenever there is a supermajority,
16:24
Speaker 8: even when the Democrats were a super majority. That everybody
16:28
Speaker 8: doesn't have your same principles and your values. Just because
16:31
Speaker 8: you look at that r you look at that d
16:33
Speaker 8: that people switch parties like they change their underwear. So
16:37
Speaker 8: you know, to fool you into basically voting for them,
16:40
Speaker 8: because you know, like when the R when the D's
16:44
Speaker 8: were popular, we had everybody was switched to D's and
16:49
Speaker 8: and a lot of you know people. At near the
16:51
Speaker 8: end of that transition, we're questioning the candidates, and I
16:55
Speaker 8: think we're at that point where we've got to start
16:58
Speaker 8: questioning the candidates because they're switching parties. I didn't switch
17:03
Speaker 8: parties because I'm not going to try to fool anybody
17:06
Speaker 8: into for anything. I'm really probably more of an independent
17:10
Speaker 8: if you really of course, you know, I don't know
17:15
Speaker 8: if it's possible for somebody that's not in one of
17:17
Speaker 8: the major parties to even have a chance. But so
17:22
Speaker 8: I just wasn't gonna switch up like I'm riding.
17:24
Speaker 3: It out, Mary, and give me, give me thirty seconds.
17:29
Speaker 3: I called this the final third. Give me thirty seconds,
17:31
Speaker 3: not timed on why you feel you are the better
17:35
Speaker 3: choice for state auditor for the people of West Virginia.
17:38
Speaker 8: I believe that we need to hold the same standard
17:40
Speaker 8: that we do. If I were to go in and
17:43
Speaker 8: apply for an auditor position, you've got to have an
17:46
Speaker 8: accounting degree. I mean, that is the basic requirement and
17:50
Speaker 8: so I feel like when this is a position that
17:54
Speaker 8: my opponent actually voted for, the raise for for this
18:00
Speaker 8: and it we are making more than the average West
18:03
Speaker 8: Virginia and so that we should be held to a
18:06
Speaker 8: higher standard and that we should have minimum qualifications for
18:11
Speaker 8: the positions that we are running for.
18:14
Speaker 3: Mary Anne, I wish you the best of luck this
18:16
Speaker 3: time around and you in your bid to be state audit.
18:18
Speaker 3: Thanks a lot, good luck over the next couple of weeks.
18:20
Speaker 6: We'll talk soon.
18:21
Speaker 8: Okay, I thought you were gonna have me sing a
18:23
Speaker 8: song or.
18:23
Speaker 6: So, she and I was texting back.
18:27
Speaker 3: I always likes to text my guests the night before
18:29
Speaker 3: to make sure that everything's good, and she said something
18:31
Speaker 3: about singing the song, and I said, well, there's got
18:33
Speaker 3: to be a dance that comes with a song, and
18:34
Speaker 3: then she responded, you're not getting a dance, only a song.
18:37
Speaker 3: So unfortunately, now maybe Anthony Lewis will sing for us.
18:40
Speaker 3: Does that want to get Anthony Lewis or maybe Mike
18:42
Speaker 3: Stewart when he's on a little bit later on Mary
18:44
Speaker 3: and Klaytor, I appreciate you being here.
18:45

22:19
Speaker 3: This morning, Anthony, good morning, welcome to our new home.
22:22
Speaker 4: It's beautiful here.
22:23
Speaker 6: I like it's great. Yeah like it pretty good.
22:25
Speaker 9: Yeah, nice set up. It's crazy that this might just
22:28
Speaker 9: be the temporary home.
22:29
Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, well the new home is going to be
22:32
Speaker 3: where the old home was, and this was kind of
22:34
Speaker 3: the transition, you know, and you're on I'm sure they've
22:36
Speaker 3: explained it to you when you're on with with with
22:38
Speaker 3: Coop and a weekly on on hotline. But yeah, we
22:41
Speaker 3: kind of like it here. Once we learn how to
22:43
Speaker 3: operate everything though, we'll be ready to move again. That's
22:46
Speaker 3: the that's what the problem is that works. I want
22:48
Speaker 3: to before we get to talk about this big deal
22:50
Speaker 3: that you're that you're doing this big fundraiser because you
22:53
Speaker 3: work a lot with the with the Sugar Bowl Foundation.
22:56
Speaker 3: I think it's called I want to talk about Mountaineer football.
23:00
Speaker 3: Not a good night this past week in Morgantown, and
23:02
Speaker 3: it almost looked like a mash unit. Listening to Neil
23:05
Speaker 3: Brown talk yesterday.
23:06
Speaker 9: Your take, I've not seen a team get beat up
23:10
Speaker 9: a West Virginia team get beat up like they got
23:12
Speaker 9: beat up the other night. It's been a while since
23:14
Speaker 9: you've seen someone come in and kind of push West
23:16
Speaker 9: Virginia round. If anything, if West Virginia didn't have the
23:19
Speaker 9: talent they were definitely we're going to stand and knuckle
23:22
Speaker 9: up with you, especially under the Kneland regime and even
23:24
Speaker 9: the rich Rock regime and a little bit under the
23:26
Speaker 9: Holgerson regime. But this team the other night got pretty
23:29
Speaker 9: beat up and it showed on the field with concussions
23:31
Speaker 9: and guys getting hurt. And Kansas State was very physical
23:38
Speaker 9: and also too the second half was abysmal. I mean
23:41
Speaker 9: the second half of that football game. At no point
23:45
Speaker 9: did I feel like after they didn't get the fourth
23:48
Speaker 9: or the fourth and goal. At no point after that
23:51
Speaker 9: did I feel like West Virginia was going to have
23:52
Speaker 9: an opportunity to come back and win that game.
23:55
Speaker 6: So we had Arizona this week. Yeah, that's a tough flight.
23:58
Speaker 3: Another national television game. I think a f FS one.
24:03
Speaker 3: I think's got it. Well, you know, people need to
24:05
Speaker 3: listen to our coverage of the game anyway. Uh But
24:07
Speaker 3: I was listening to coach Brown yesterday talking about and
24:10
Speaker 3: he said he kind of likened it to the trip
24:12
Speaker 3: and we make every other year out the Lubbock. He said,
24:13
Speaker 3: it's really not much farther than that, and this time
24:15
Speaker 3: they're flying out of Pittsburgh, which I'm kind of I'm
24:18
Speaker 3: always kind of a geek for like the logistics of this.
24:20
Speaker 3: They normally fly to Clarksburg, but they're flying out of Pittsburgh.
24:23
Speaker 3: He didn't seem to have sort of an issue with that.
24:25
Speaker 3: I don't know exactly what it was, but he didn't
24:27
Speaker 3: really want to fly to Pittsburgh. But nonetheless, it's a
24:29
Speaker 3: banged up team heading out to Arizona this week, Anthony.
24:32
Speaker 9: Yeah, and and they're gonna they're really gonna have to
24:35
Speaker 9: suck it up and go. I mean, we'll see what
24:37
Speaker 9: they're made out of. And they should. At this point
24:40
Speaker 9: in the regime with Neil Brown, it should be next
24:43
Speaker 9: man up mentality. The next guy's the number two, number
24:47
Speaker 9: three guys should be ready to go. And at this
24:49
Speaker 9: point you've had an opportunity to fill your roster and
24:51
Speaker 9: get guys, you know, in positions to where they can
24:55
Speaker 9: come step in and and obviously your ones are obviously
24:58
Speaker 9: better than your twos, but we shouldn't at this point
25:00
Speaker 9: see a lot of drop off. So hopefully they're ready
25:02
Speaker 9: to go. I know that's a long trip flying out
25:05
Speaker 9: of Pittsburgh, and I was curious, I wonder why they're
25:08
Speaker 9: doing that, But I'm guessing since it's the first time
25:11
Speaker 9: that they've been to Arizona, there's just a lot more people.
25:14
Speaker 6: Going on the trip.
25:15
Speaker 3: Well, and it's uh, Administrator, it's going to be like
25:18
Speaker 3: in the nighties. I mean, it is Arizona. So but
25:20
Speaker 3: they're expecting some some warm temperatures, not the comfortable confines
25:24
Speaker 3: that we've had in Mountaineerfield over the last couple weeks.
25:26
Speaker 3: All right, let's get to this cement this Saturday night.
25:28
Speaker 3: It's going to be held at Buffalo Wild Wings. It's
25:31
Speaker 3: out of Cross Lanes Nitro Marketplace. It's it's kind of
25:34
Speaker 3: a watch party, I guess, of sorts of the Arizona game.
25:37
Speaker 3: But there's going to be a special guest out there.
25:39
Speaker 3: How cool is this? You get to watch the game
25:41
Speaker 3: with mountaineer legend Stedman Ale. How cool is that? So
25:45
Speaker 3: over the last fourteen years, and I'll go back to
25:47
Speaker 3: the beginning. Yes, I was working in the press, and
25:52
Speaker 3: I'd been at the Davis Shelter in Charleston and was
25:55
Speaker 3: on my way to an Angel Tree event and I
25:58
Speaker 3: said to that, hey, I gotta go.
25:59
Speaker 6: I gotta go to this thing.
26:00
Speaker 9: And she said, oh, that's a great program they've got.
26:04
Speaker 9: She said, it's just sad that our kids here get missed.
26:07
Speaker 9: And I said, well, what do you mean. She said,
26:08
Speaker 9: our kids are teenagers, so when they do toy drives
26:11
Speaker 9: and things like that, people send toys for smaller trades.
26:15
Speaker 9: And she said, our kids are teenagers, so they don't
26:18
Speaker 9: really fit into that demo and that I don't know why.
26:20
Speaker 9: That really stuck with me, so later that year, I
26:23
Speaker 9: went out and I bought ten at the time digital
26:26
Speaker 9: cameras out of pocket and took them up there on
26:29
Speaker 9: Christmas morning for those kids. And then I thought to myself, well,
26:32
Speaker 9: how can we can you continue to serve these kids
26:37
Speaker 9: that are missed? And then I thought, well, we can
26:41
Speaker 9: have a watch party and I can call my friends
26:43
Speaker 9: from the university or my former players that are former
26:45
Speaker 9: players and get things in and and it just took
26:49
Speaker 9: off from there. So the people at Buffalo wil Wing's
26:52
Speaker 9: at Nighter Marketplace, the old general manager CC. Honestly, at
26:57
Speaker 9: first nobody wanted to even let me do the event.
27:00
Speaker 9: They just thought I was going to come in and
27:01
Speaker 9: take up space and run off the regular and they
27:04
Speaker 9: opened the doors and from that point on we've had
27:06
Speaker 9: it there. And this is our fourteenth year, and it's
27:10
Speaker 9: grown to the point where not only do we serve
27:13
Speaker 9: the kids at Davis, but we've now taken on the
27:17
Speaker 9: Cross Lanes YMCA because they have a large number of
27:21
Speaker 9: kids that that need support it during that time, so
27:26
Speaker 9: we help them as well. And then my daughter has
27:29
Speaker 9: an older sister who's a teacher, and she started doing
27:32
Speaker 9: something for her kids. So I just told her, Hey,
27:35
Speaker 9: let me take care of them as well. So it's
27:38
Speaker 9: turned into a big event and we get a lot
27:41
Speaker 9: of great support, a lot of community support. The former
27:44
Speaker 9: police stedman, I'll be honest with you, I don't have
27:48
Speaker 9: a personal relationship with him outside of just interviewing him
27:51
Speaker 9: a few times. But I called him and told him
27:53
Speaker 9: what we do and and he was like, yeah, just
27:56
Speaker 9: boke me a flight and I'll come. And it's that
27:59
Speaker 9: type of response from the players, the former players. And
28:02
Speaker 9: he lives in South Florida, who's in Miami, so he's
28:05
Speaker 9: not here very much. So but his connection to West
28:08
Speaker 9: Virginia and connection to West Virginia kids brings him back.
28:12
Speaker 9: And the guys are awesome, Like you can, I can
28:15
Speaker 9: call any of these guys say hey, Mark Boulger, Mark, Hey,
28:18
Speaker 9: I need some monograph pictures. Yeah, send them down, I'll
28:20
Speaker 9: sign them, send them right back. So I always have
28:22
Speaker 9: to give the guys, the former players that continue to
28:26
Speaker 9: give back to the state of Western.
28:27
Speaker 3: And as you said, many of them who don't really
28:28
Speaker 3: quote unquote have ties to this state other than the
28:31
Speaker 3: fact that they put on the gold and blue and
28:33
Speaker 3: that left. Obviously, it says something about the State of
28:36
Speaker 3: West Virginia because and the WVU because it left a
28:39
Speaker 3: mark on them. Even though ideally they should just fly
28:42
Speaker 3: out here and they would be the end of it.
28:43
Speaker 3: They go to the NFL or go on about their
28:45
Speaker 3: their respective careers whatever. And I've had an opportunity to
28:48
Speaker 3: sit down and watch some football games with these former guys.
28:50
Speaker 3: I've done it with with Major Harris, and I've did
28:53
Speaker 3: it with a couple of the other players as well.
28:55
Speaker 3: It's a totally different thing when you set down and
28:59
Speaker 3: they can know that. This is why they make such
29:02
Speaker 3: great analyst on television and radio, because they see things
29:05
Speaker 3: that average fans don't see and to see them, well,
29:08
Speaker 3: this is what he should have done here, This is
29:09
Speaker 3: what the coach should have called here. This event is
29:12
Speaker 3: free to attend, right.
29:13
Speaker 4: Free to attend.
29:14
Speaker 3: But obviously you have I mean, you're trying to raise
29:17
Speaker 3: a little money, so how will you do just whatever?
29:19
Speaker 3: They want to give a say kind of thing.
29:20
Speaker 9: So people have an opportunity to kind of sponsor slash
29:23
Speaker 9: reserve their seats. I have so many spaces carved out,
29:27
Speaker 9: so if you would like to do that, you can
29:29
Speaker 9: head over to our website at Sugar Bowl Foundation dot Org.
29:32
Speaker 9: And what you can do is reserve a spot so
29:35
Speaker 9: you don't have to fight the crowd. But if you
29:37
Speaker 9: want to roll the dice and just come in and
29:38
Speaker 9: get a seat, you're welcome to do. So we'll have
29:42
Speaker 9: I started putting it all together last night. I think
29:44
Speaker 9: we have about forty silent auction items. We've got jerseys
29:48
Speaker 9: from David Sills, Pacman Jones, Will Greer, a long list
29:54
Speaker 9: of guys, but autographed items from Steve Slayton, Owen Schmidt,
29:58
Speaker 9: Pat White, Mark Bolger, Gary Stills, you name it. We
30:03
Speaker 9: have autographed items, so that stuff will be up for auction.
30:06
Speaker 9: Then at halftime we do a huge raffle. We got
30:08
Speaker 9: twenty items that are donated and we've got a Garrett
30:12
Speaker 9: Green jersey and a Pat White jersey as a grand prize,
30:14
Speaker 9: and eighteen other items including gift certificates from restaurants, Ridgie Barbecue,
30:21
Speaker 9: Child Taie, We've got a bottle of Buffalo Trace that
30:25
Speaker 9: someone donated. I mean, we've got so there's twenty items,
30:28
Speaker 9: so that helps us raise money. And then of course
30:31
Speaker 9: we'll if you want to get autograph pictures, we'll have
30:33
Speaker 9: pictures of Steedman and we've got footballs and helmets and
30:38
Speaker 9: that type of thing. So that's how we raise our funds,
30:41
Speaker 9: and I've kind of designed it. You've probably been to
30:43
Speaker 9: these things where, you know, fundraisers. We want everyone to
30:48
Speaker 9: be there, no matter if they got five bucks to
30:50
Speaker 9: give or if they've got a thousand dollars to give,
30:52
Speaker 9: and we try to design it that way because there's
30:54
Speaker 9: been many times I've been locked out of events. I'm like,
30:57
Speaker 9: that'd be great to go to, but yeah, I don't
30:58
Speaker 9: have five hundred bucks for two, you know, So we
31:01
Speaker 9: try to design it to where everyone can participate. Every
31:04
Speaker 9: can take part of the experience no matter what. And
31:06
Speaker 9: bring your kids. He'll step them on the table. And
31:08
Speaker 9: we don't charge for pictures. Like every little thing. The
31:11
Speaker 9: only thing we ask is if you bring your own
31:13
Speaker 9: stuff and make a donation. If you need a picture,
31:17
Speaker 9: we'll have pictures. You can make a donation to any
31:19
Speaker 9: amount you're.
31:19
Speaker 6: Not really what.
31:21
Speaker 9: We don't even look just here, five or five hundred,
31:23
Speaker 9: you know, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. We don't
31:25
Speaker 9: even look at the amount. We just throw it in
31:26
Speaker 9: the bucket and keep it.
31:27
Speaker 6: What time does the event start?
31:29
Speaker 9: So the game starts at seven. The event starts at six.
31:33
Speaker 9: If you're nervous about seating and you don't want to
31:36
Speaker 9: reserve something, I suggest coming a little earlier before six
31:39
Speaker 9: o'clock and just go ahead and park and just say, hey,
31:41
Speaker 9: we're here for the event tonight, and park yourself in
31:43
Speaker 9: the restaurant.
31:44
Speaker 3: I mean, and he I said that, throw this out
31:46
Speaker 3: to the Mountaineer faithful. I mean, not a whole lot
31:49
Speaker 3: of people are going to be taking the trip out
31:50
Speaker 3: to Arizona. So you're gonna watch the game somewhere somewhere,
31:53
Speaker 3: you know, do you want to watch it? I mean,
31:55
Speaker 3: you watch it in your home, but do you want
31:57
Speaker 3: to come out to Buffalo Wild Wings have some great
31:59
Speaker 3: food and US folks Buffalo Wild Wings.
32:00
Speaker 6: I'll give a big shout out to them.
32:02
Speaker 3: They do so many things in the community that a
32:05
Speaker 3: lot of quote unquote change corporations don't do, so I'll
32:09
Speaker 3: give them big props for that.
32:10
Speaker 9: Like I told you, nobody locally wanted to support this
32:14
Speaker 9: fourteen years ago. And I just happened to be in
32:16
Speaker 9: there eating and the general manager walked by at the
32:19
Speaker 9: time and I said hey, And I actually said, hey,
32:22
Speaker 9: who's your manager here? She said who I am? And
32:24
Speaker 9: I told her my idea and she said, yeah, we'd
32:27
Speaker 9: love to host you.
32:27
Speaker 6: That's awesome.
32:28
Speaker 9: And I thought I was even going to ask because
32:31
Speaker 9: I just assumed as a chain it would be impossible.
32:33
Speaker 3: But they're awesome out there, Yeah, they really are. And
32:36
Speaker 3: so it starts at six o'clock, six o'clock and the
32:38
Speaker 3: game time is at o'clock at seven o'clock, and so

37:30

37:33
Speaker 3: the first full day, first day, I should say of
37:36
Speaker 3: early voting in West Virginia. There are ten full days
37:38
Speaker 3: leading up to the general election, and including two Saturdays.
37:42
Speaker 3: We'll talk with West Virginia Secretary of State Mac Horner
37:44
Speaker 3: about that coming up on tomorrow's show. Last night, to
37:47
Speaker 3: a no one surprise, the Canawa County Commission or come
37:50
Speaker 3: on and try that again at Connawk County Board voted
37:53
Speaker 3: five to nothing to close Maulden Elementary. That meeting held
37:56
Speaker 3: last night at Riverside High There's another one coming up
37:59
Speaker 3: tonight for another school. One person not exactly thrilled with
38:03
Speaker 3: all the state all that's going on with this is
38:05
Speaker 3: say Senator Mike Stewart, do you want to talk about
38:07
Speaker 3: that and a couple of other things to Senator Stewart's
38:09
Speaker 3: in the studio, good morning, welcome to the show.
38:11
Speaker 4: Hey, good morning, thanks for having me.
38:13
Speaker 3: So last night, again they voted five to nothing the
38:16
Speaker 3: BOE in Kana County, and it was to no one's
38:19
Speaker 3: surprise that, as a matter of fact, I think on
38:21
Speaker 3: these school consolidation and closing hearings, I think at maybe
38:25
Speaker 3: one of them there was one no vote, but the
38:27
Speaker 3: rest of them have been unanimous. What do you make
38:30
Speaker 3: of all of these announcements of these school closings and
38:32
Speaker 3: or consolidation, Senator.
38:33
Speaker 4: Well, we've gone the wrong way on this entire subject, consolidation.
38:38
Speaker 4: We have great teachers in our schools, and the challenge
38:42
Speaker 4: we have is consolidation. We should be talking deconsolidation. And
38:46
Speaker 4: what we don't do is spend enough time talking about
38:49
Speaker 4: our communities and the impact local schools have not only
38:52
Speaker 4: on those communities, but the students in those schools. These hearings,
38:56
Speaker 4: these are fake hearings. I'm just telling you they're fake hearings.
39:00
Speaker 4: You don't need to have these hearings, and they're going
39:01
Speaker 4: to vote exactly the way they are. These are good
39:03
Speaker 4: people who serve on the school board. I don't mean
39:05
Speaker 4: to disparage them, but the result is already written in stone.
39:09
Speaker 4: If this were a football game, the scoreboards already filled
39:13
Speaker 4: out at the end of the game before the game
39:15
Speaker 4: even gets started. Why are our kids failing in our
39:18
Speaker 4: schools because we've consolidated our kids out of their communities.
39:22
Speaker 4: We need to be talking deconsolidation. I'm going to continue
39:26
Speaker 4: to talk about the subject. Our test scores continue to
39:30
Speaker 4: go down, down, down, and we continue to consolidate in
39:35
Speaker 4: order to save a buck. But I can tell you
39:37
Speaker 4: there are certain school systems around West Virginia. I'll give
39:40
Speaker 4: you one Van down in Boone County. Van's test scores
39:43
Speaker 4: very small school, very small. They've talked about consolidating them
39:47
Speaker 4: into the Scott High School system.
39:50
Speaker 6: There.
39:51
Speaker 4: Their test scores are off the charts, reading, writing, arithmetic,
39:56
Speaker 4: They got it, and they do very well. When they
39:59
Speaker 4: go on to or vocational education, they do great. But
40:04
Speaker 4: we need to be thinking more about the idea of
40:07
Speaker 4: consolidation versus deconsolidation. You know, Florida was one of the
40:11
Speaker 4: first states to talk about consolidation and to do it.
40:14
Speaker 4: Florida was also the first state to start talking deconsolidation,
40:18
Speaker 4: and I think that if you track test scores that
40:20
Speaker 4: have dropped and dropped and dropped, you match it with consolidation.
40:24
Speaker 4: We've got great teachers, we need teachers to be in
40:27
Speaker 4: the classrooms and local communities. Let parents have more authority
40:30
Speaker 4: in those classrooms, and I think you'll see things improve quickly.
40:35
Speaker 3: Talk about the economics though, Mike, I mean, you're a
40:37
Speaker 3: smart guy. You realize then they'll say it costs more
40:40
Speaker 3: and more to operate these schools.
40:41
Speaker 6: A lot of these schools are older.
40:43
Speaker 3: Some cases you can't even get parts for the things
40:45
Speaker 3: that they need to fix the schools. I mean, I
40:47
Speaker 3: know you understand the economic aspect, there's no question.
40:50
Speaker 4: And so as a Republican, there's no question. I like
40:52
Speaker 4: tax cuts and I like budget control. But there's one
40:55
Speaker 4: area where we shouldn't be holding up costs, and that's
40:58
Speaker 4: in the education realm. Talk about it all the time.
41:01
Speaker 4: This is the most important area that we can invest
41:03
Speaker 4: in as our students in our local communities, and I
41:07
Speaker 4: think it's important we put our money where our mouth
41:10
Speaker 4: is on this. And I'm fully understanding of the issue
41:14
Speaker 4: of the cost of operating local schools. If we need
41:17
Speaker 4: to spend more, we need to spend more, but we
41:19
Speaker 4: need results in the classroom. We're not getting those. We
41:22
Speaker 4: can consolidate it down the one school in West Virginia.
41:26
Speaker 4: It's a bad idea, This idea of people riding a
41:28
Speaker 4: school bus for over an hour one way on the
41:31
Speaker 4: way to school, it's a terrible idea. It's bad for
41:34
Speaker 4: the student, it's bad for the communities. And let's talk
41:38
Speaker 4: about extracurriculars that do matter. They matter. I was a
41:42
Speaker 4: kid who was schooled in very local schools, small schools,
41:47
Speaker 4: perhaps not the most sophisticated of schools, not brand new buildings,
41:52
Speaker 4: but I think I'd like to think I got a
41:54
Speaker 4: pretty good education behind it. And I think it's important
41:57
Speaker 4: that Johnny and Susie be able to participate in students council,
42:00
Speaker 4: play on the football team, be able to play on
42:03
Speaker 4: the soccer team. But if they have to commute one
42:05
Speaker 4: way to school and one way back home, how easy
42:09
Speaker 4: is it for mom and dad when they're struggling just
42:11
Speaker 4: to get by, to be able to get Johnny or
42:13
Speaker 4: Susie back to school, to be able to play in
42:16
Speaker 4: the band or be able to play on the football team.
42:19
Speaker 4: It's not possible. We need to think about the whole
42:21
Speaker 4: student and the communities when we talk about these issues.
42:25
Speaker 6: I want to move on.
42:26
Speaker 3: While the posters say, Mike that their Senator Stewart that
42:29
Speaker 3: the presidential election between former President Trump and VICKI of
42:33
Speaker 3: VP Kamala Harris will be close, you say, in the
42:36
Speaker 3: words of Lee Corso, not so fast, my friend, you're
42:40
Speaker 3: calling for a Trump landslide.
42:41
Speaker 4: It's going to be a landslide.
42:43
Speaker 6: Listen.
42:43
Speaker 4: I think there are a lot of people out there that
42:44
Speaker 4: are hurting, and they know that we need change, and
42:47
Speaker 4: they look at Kamala Harris and they're wondering, how in
42:50
Speaker 4: the world did somebody like that get to the point
42:53
Speaker 4: of being a nominee of a party. Joe Biden would
42:55
Speaker 4: have been a far better nominee for the Democrats. If
42:58
Speaker 4: you're a Democrat voter and you're looking at what's going
43:01
Speaker 4: to happen on Tuesday, two weeks from today, you ought
43:04
Speaker 4: to be pretty angry because Joe Biden won that nomination
43:07
Speaker 4: and it was stolen by establishment folks, insiders of the
43:11
Speaker 4: Democrat Party who panicked Joe Biden would have been a
43:14
Speaker 4: far better nominee. This is going to be a landslide.
43:17
Speaker 4: There are a lot of people are going to vote
43:18
Speaker 4: for Trump. They're not going to put a sign in
43:20
Speaker 4: the yard. They're not gonna wear a Maga hat. They're
43:22
Speaker 4: not gonna go to a rally. They're going to quietly
43:24
Speaker 4: go to the polls. They're going to check the box
43:26
Speaker 4: for Donald Trump and other candidates to stand for change.
43:30
Speaker 4: They're gonna go home. They're going to watch the results
43:32
Speaker 4: in the next morning. They're going to try to get
43:34
Speaker 4: their kids out to school and get to work. It's
43:36
Speaker 4: a very simple election. I think it's going to be
43:38
Speaker 4: a landslide. I see where it's going. I saw this
43:41
Speaker 4: back in nineteen eighty four, a very very tight election
43:45
Speaker 4: between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale, and on the final
43:48
Speaker 4: weeks you could see it moving and moving quickly. I
43:52
Speaker 4: point out tomorrow is early voting. It's unusual for a
43:55
Speaker 4: Republican to say, go vote early. I want Republicans to
43:59
Speaker 4: vote early. I want them to get to the polls
44:02
Speaker 4: as soon as they can mark those ballots. I can
44:05
Speaker 4: tell you this. I do believe that if it's close,
44:07
Speaker 4: they're going to try to steal it. I know we're
44:09
Speaker 4: going to get some calls on that. I think we
44:12
Speaker 4: have to win this by overwhelming margins. I think it's
44:15
Speaker 4: gonna happen. I think they make the call on election night.
44:19
Speaker 3: If it goes the opposite direction, though, Senator, and Kamala
44:21
Speaker 3: Harris does win, would you used to say she won't.
44:23
Speaker 3: But if Kamala Harris does win, would you be willing
44:26
Speaker 3: to come out and say if it's overwhelming, if it's overwhelming,
44:29
Speaker 3: to Kamala Harris won.
44:30
Speaker 4: Even if it's not overwhelming. If she wins, she wins,
44:33
Speaker 4: and I recognize Joe Biden as the President of the
44:36
Speaker 4: United States today. If she wins by even a single
44:40
Speaker 4: vote and that's where the country goes, and she's sworn
44:43
Speaker 4: in as the next president, I'll recognize her as the president.
44:46
Speaker 4: Then I'll pray for those folks who work in the
44:48
Speaker 4: gas industry and the coal industry and those families who
44:52
Speaker 4: go to the grocery store and are struggling to get
44:54
Speaker 4: by because it's not going to get any easier, and
44:57
Speaker 4: so I'll recognize her as the president. I'll do it
45:00
Speaker 4: everything I can to try to see that she's successful.
45:03
Speaker 4: But I don't think that's what's going to happen on
45:05
Speaker 4: election Night?

Speaker 3: five ADWCCHS. Mike, before we move on, you did have
48:07
Speaker 3: one comment that you told me during the break that
48:09
Speaker 3: you wanted to make about deconsolidation and a pilot program.
48:12
Speaker 4: Well, listen, I've asked, and you know, I serve in
48:14
Speaker 4: the State Senate. I love serving there. I represent some
48:17
Speaker 4: great people in Lincoln, Logan Boone, in the southern part
48:19
Speaker 4: of Kanawa County. I've asked that my district be a
48:22
Speaker 4: pilot program, and I can guarantee a pilot program for deconsolidation.
48:27
Speaker 4: And if you let me have that pilot program, I
48:30
Speaker 4: can guarantee you, after a period of time, my schools
48:33
Speaker 4: will far outperform those consolidated schools. I guarantee you.
48:37
Speaker 3: Tech says, okay, but what is Senator Stewart's plan as
48:39
Speaker 3: a freshman state senator for legislation to reverse consolidation.
48:44
Speaker 4: Well, I've already been in discussions on this, and so
48:48
Speaker 4: we've you know, given I'm a freshman, I've already passed
48:51
Speaker 4: some pretty big legislation, whether it's the vape shop legislation,
48:54
Speaker 4: other big pieces of legislation I've taken on. I'm not
48:57
Speaker 4: afraid of controversy, that's for sure. I'm sure you're lights
49:00
Speaker 4: are lighting up over there with comments from folks. But
49:03
Speaker 4: guess what, I don't care, because this is the right
49:06
Speaker 4: thing to talk about. We need deconsolidation, and I'll be
49:09
Speaker 4: working on that.
49:10
Speaker 3: Deck, says guess your guest is against the closing to
49:12
Speaker 3: local schools. However, he is probably a supporter of the
49:15
Speaker 3: Hope Scholarship, which allows parents to place their children in
49:17
Speaker 3: charter schools, which basically defunds the public schools and makes
49:20
Speaker 3: the local boards make these decisions.
49:23
Speaker 4: Why was there a need for any of this? Why
49:24
Speaker 4: because of these consolidated schools taking kids out of communities.
49:28
Speaker 4: Of course, I support the Hope Scholarship, and homeschooling is soaring.
49:32
Speaker 4: It has everything to do with kids being forced to
49:35
Speaker 4: go way outside their communities to consolidated schools.
49:39
Speaker 6: All right.
49:39
Speaker 3: I want to ask about the Guardian caps then, and
49:43
Speaker 3: you brought some props in this morning. I'll post those
49:45
Speaker 3: pictures a little bit later on. Following the death of
49:48
Speaker 3: young Cohen Craddock, which, by the way, folks, it's pronounced
49:51
Speaker 3: Craddock because it's Southern hous Virginia, it's not Cradock. So
49:55
Speaker 3: let's talk about you why you felt the need to
49:59
Speaker 3: get in Guardian cap thing.
50:01
Speaker 4: Well, listen, the time has come and the evolution of
50:04
Speaker 4: the sport is ongoing. In fact, to a Tounguevaloa who
50:08
Speaker 4: plays for the Miami.
50:09
Speaker 6: And you said it, well, it's tough.
50:11
Speaker 19: I was.
50:11
Speaker 4: I was debating whether I was going to But but
50:14
Speaker 4: the challenge here is we see it every single week.
50:17
Speaker 4: We're losing players. I think the Mountaineers last weekend lost
50:20
Speaker 4: some players as a result of head trauma. We need
50:23
Speaker 4: to be protecting our youngsters. Those people playing midget league,
50:27
Speaker 4: those people play in middle school, those people play in
50:29
Speaker 4: high school. I brought you in one of these Guardian
50:32
Speaker 4: caps for you to see. It's amazing how light it is.
50:35
Speaker 4: In the NFL studies there, they're without question. You can't
50:39
Speaker 4: debate the science. The science is very very clear. We're
50:43
Speaker 4: not going to be proposing I'm not going to be
50:45
Speaker 4: proposing a bill that just rewards Guardian Cap. With the
50:48
Speaker 4: big win in West Virginia, I'm actually working with Javier
50:51
Speaker 4: Cardenas and other doctors at WVU and Marshall. We're working with.
50:56
Speaker 4: We're going to be working with people in the helmet industry.
50:59
Speaker 4: We're going to be working with those folks who fit
51:01
Speaker 4: the helmets for Mountaineer, for WVU, and for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
51:05
Speaker 4: We're going to craft a bill that is a smart
51:08
Speaker 4: bill to lead this country where it needs to go
51:11
Speaker 4: in terms of the transition of the sport. Listen, when
51:14
Speaker 4: football started, there weren't helmets at all, and then we
51:17
Speaker 4: went to leather helmets and so on and so forth.
51:19
Speaker 4: This is a natural transition. And when you see that
51:22
Speaker 4: head protection over there, it's so simple, so easy, so cheap.
51:27
Speaker 4: Why wouldn't we do it?
51:28
Speaker 6: What age kids would you like to see where these things?
51:30
Speaker 4: Well, I think we have to talk about anything. It's
51:32
Speaker 4: high school and younger. Certainly for high school kids that
51:35
Speaker 4: ought to be mandatory in games, but I'll say this
51:38
Speaker 4: for midget leg and middle schoolers, I'd like to see
51:41
Speaker 4: it mandatory anytime there's any sort of contact. I tell you,
51:45
Speaker 4: the discussions aren't great. And this bill we're going to
51:48
Speaker 4: introduce isn't going to just be about a piece of
51:52
Speaker 4: a piece of rap for your helmet. It's going to
51:55
Speaker 4: be about trainers. It's going to be about the assistance
51:58
Speaker 4: at the field. It's going to be about teaching young
52:01
Speaker 4: people how to tackle. But it's not just about football.
52:03
Speaker 4: It's about soccer, it's about volleyball. We need to re
52:07
Speaker 4: examine here in West Virginia, whatever we can do to
52:10
Speaker 4: protect our kids from head trauma. The long term effects
52:13
Speaker 4: are absolute, they are consequential. I think moms and dads
52:17
Speaker 4: really want this protection, and I'm hearing from them from
52:20
Speaker 4: all across West Virginia.
52:21
Speaker 3: All Right, now, I'm gonna have you on the week
52:23
Speaker 3: of the election to go back and talk about Trump.
52:26

52:29
