- 0:16There's a sentence that I want you to
- 0:18stop saying, I need to get on a
- 0:20budget.
- 0:22Listen to the way we even say it.
- 0:25Nobody says that with excitement.
- 0:27Nobody says, girl, guess what?
- 0:29I'm getting on a budget.
- 0:31No, usually when a woman says she needs
- 0:34to get on a budget, she sounds like
- 0:36she's been called into the principal's office.
- 0:39Because we've turned budgeting into a punishment.
- 0:43You spent too much, you ate out too
- 0:45much, you bought something that you didn't need,
- 0:49maybe you took the trip, you ordered DoorDash,
- 0:52you have had too many subscriptions, you need
- 0:57to stop getting your nails done, you need
- 1:00to make coffee at home, you need to
- 1:02cut this, cut that, cancel that, give this
- 1:06up, stop doing that.
- 1:07And somehow, if we deprive ourselves long enough,
- 1:10we're supposed to emerge financially free.
- 1:14But I've got a question.
- 1:16What are you actually building?
- 1:19Because if the only thing your budget tells
- 1:21you to do is not have this or
- 1:24that, I'm not surprised that you hate budgeting.
- 1:28I would hate it too.
- 1:31That's not how I want us thinking about
- 1:33money and financial feminism.
- 1:36A budget should not be a list of
- 1:38everything you're no longer allowed to enjoy.
- 1:42A budget should tell your money where to
- 1:44go so that more of your life eventually
- 1:47belongs to you.
- 1:49There's a big difference between that.
- 1:53Welcome to Financial Feminism.
- 1:55Today we're talking about budgeting.
- 1:58And probably not the way that you've heard
- 2:00it before.
- 2:02Because I don't want you leaving this episode
- 2:05with another spreadsheet you enthusiastically use for 11
- 2:10days and then mysteriously stop opening it.
- 2:13And I definitely don't want you to leave
- 2:16here feeling guilty.
- 2:18I want you to leave asking a different
- 2:20question.
- 2:21Not, what should I stop buying?
- 2:24Ask, what is my money building?
- 2:28That question changes everything.
- 2:31Because most of us were taught to budget
- 2:34around our obligations.
- 2:36Money comes in, everybody gets in line.
- 2:40Mortgage, rent, car, insurance, utilities, credit cards, student
- 2:49loans, groceries, phone, children, child care, subscriptions, family,
- 2:59whatever else needs to be paid.
- 3:02Everybody gets a piece.
- 3:04And somewhere at the very end of that
- 3:07line is you.
- 3:09And when I say you, I don't mean
- 3:11the version of you who wants dinner out
- 3:14Saturday night.
- 3:15I mean the woman you are trying to
- 3:18become.
- 3:19The woman who wants options.
- 3:22The woman who wants investments.
- 3:25The woman who wants a business.
- 3:28The woman who wants property.
- 3:31The woman who wants enough money available in
- 3:34that emergency becomes inconvenient instead of devastating.
- 3:41I want you to hear that again.
- 3:43The woman who wants enough money available that
- 3:48an emergency becomes inconvenient instead of devastating.
- 3:54The woman who wants to be able to
- 3:56walk away from a job that is destroying
- 3:59her.
- 4:00The woman who never wants to stay in
- 4:03a relationship because she cannot afford to leave.
- 4:06The woman who wants to help her children
- 4:10without jeopardizing her own retirement.
- 4:13The woman who wants to take six months
- 4:16off one day.
- 4:18The woman who wants to start something, buy
- 4:22something, own something, build something, leave something.
- 4:27Where is she in your budget?
- 4:30Seriously, where is she?
- 4:33Because you can pay every bill on time
- 4:36and still fail to build financial ownership.
- 4:39You can earn six figures and have almost
- 4:43no financial breathing room.
- 4:45You can have a beautiful house and be
- 4:48terrified of missing two paychecks.
- 4:51You can look successful and privately know that
- 4:55almost everything depends on next month's income arriving
- 4:59on time.
- 5:01That is why I need us to separate
- 5:03two ideas that we often treat as the
- 5:06same thing.
- 5:08Financial responsibility matters.
- 5:11Pay your bills, understand your obligations, manage debt,
- 5:16know what's coming in and what's going out.
- 5:19Absolutely.
- 5:21But paying bills protects the life you currently
- 5:25have.
- 5:27Ownership helps build the life you want next.
- 5:31We need both.
- 5:33And that is where budgeting gets interesting.
- 5:37Because I do not think the problem is
- 5:40always that women cannot budget.
- 5:43Some women are incredible at managing money.
- 5:47We know exactly when the mortgage comes out.
- 5:51We know which card has the automatic payment.
- 5:55We know when the tuition is due.
- 5:58We know how much groceries usually cost.
- 6:03We know how to make something stretch.
- 6:06We know how to move things around.
- 6:10We know how to make the household work.
- 6:13And some women have been making money stretch
- 6:15since they were teenagers.
- 6:17That's a financial skill.
- 6:19But being skilled at making money stretch does
- 6:23not automatically mean that money is building ownership.
- 6:28You can become incredibly efficient at surviving.
- 6:32And I don't want survival efficiency to be
- 6:36confused with financial freedom.
- 6:38Think about that.
- 6:40You can get so good at managing everything
- 6:44that nobody notices there's nothing being built for
- 6:48you.
- 6:49You paid everybody.
- 6:51You handled everything.
- 6:52You made it work again and again and
- 6:56again.
- 6:57Five years pass.
- 7:00Ten years pass.
- 7:01And then one day you look around and
- 7:04think, wait, what do I actually own?
- 7:09And that's the question I want financial feminism
- 7:11to put on the table.
- 7:14Not just how much do you make.
- 7:18Not just how much do you save.
- 7:21Not just what is your credit score.
- 7:23But what are you building with the money
- 7:26that passes through your hands?
- 7:29And I want to give you a simple
- 7:31way to start answering that.
- 7:33I call it the ownership budget.
- 7:36The ownership budget gives your money four jobs.
- 7:41Live.
- 7:45Own.
- 7:46Enjoy.
- 7:48Live.
- 7:50Protect.
- 7:51Own.
- 7:52Enjoy.
- 7:52That's it.
- 7:54And notice what is not in there.
- 7:57Punish.
- 7:59There's no punishment category.
- 8:01There's no shame category.
- 8:03There's no you were bad this month category.
- 8:06There are four jobs.
- 8:09Let's walk through them.
- 8:11First, live.
- 8:14This is what it costs you to operate
- 8:16your life.
- 8:18Housing.
- 8:19Utilities.
- 8:21Food.
- 8:23Our transportation.
- 8:25Our insurance.
- 8:27Child care.
- 8:29Minimum debt obligations.
- 8:33Medication.
- 8:35Phone.
- 8:36The things required to keep your household functioning.
- 8:40And you need to know this number.
- 8:42And I mean really know it.
- 8:44Not I think it's around no.
- 8:46One of the most powerful things a woman
- 8:49can know is exactly how much it costs
- 8:52to keep her life running.
- 8:54If your income disappeared tomorrow, what amount would
- 8:58you need every single month to maintain the
- 9:02essentials?
- 9:03That number matters.
- 9:05Because you cannot build a safety net if
- 9:08you do not know what the net needs
- 9:11to catch.
- 9:12You cannot determine how long your emergency savings
- 9:16will last if you do not know your
- 9:18essential monthly expenses.
- 9:21You cannot evaluate whether you can afford to
- 9:27leave a job if you do not know
- 9:30what your life costs.
- 9:32You cannot intelligently evaluate a new salary without
- 9:37understanding the number it needs to support.
- 9:41Knowing your live number is not depressing.
- 9:45It's information.
- 9:48And information gives you leverage.
- 9:52Next.
- 9:53Protect.
- 9:54Now I want you to ask what money
- 9:59is protecting me?
- 10:01Not growing.
- 10:03Not entertaining me.
- 10:04Protecting me.
- 10:07Emergency savings.
- 10:09Insurance.
- 10:11Cash reserves.
- 10:13Money available for unexpected expenses.
- 10:17Your I can leave money.
- 10:20Your don't call anybody money.
- 10:24That $500 that means when the tire blows.
- 10:29You don't have to call your mother.
- 10:32Or your sister.
- 10:34Or your ex.
- 10:35Or put it on a credit card that's
- 10:38already carrying a balance.
- 10:40Protection money is not glamorous.
- 10:44No one's going to compliment you on it.
- 10:46Nobody sees it.
- 10:48You cannot wear it.
- 10:49You cannot post it.
- 10:50But protection money changes the way you move
- 10:54through the world.
- 10:55Because financial breathing room changes decisions.
- 10:59Think about the difference between a woman who
- 11:02hates her job and has $42 available after
- 11:06her bills and a woman who hates her
- 11:09job and has six months of essential expenses
- 11:13available.
- 11:15Same terrible boss.
- 11:17Same toxic workplace.
- 11:20Different options.
- 11:22Money does not solve every problem.
- 11:25But money can change which choices are available
- 11:29to you.
- 11:30That is why I keep talking about financial
- 11:33autonomy.
- 11:35We are not accumulating money simply to stare
- 11:38at a bigger number.
- 11:39We're building choices.
- 11:42Protect is where some of these choices begin.
- 11:46Now, we get to the category I want
- 11:50women paying very close attention to.
- 11:54Own.
- 11:55What did you buy this month that could
- 11:58potentially make money?
- 12:01Increase in value.
- 12:03Create equity.
- 12:06Generate income.
- 12:09Or give you greater economic control.
- 12:13Retirement investments.
- 12:16Brokerage investments.
- 12:19Business equity.
- 12:21Real estate equity.
- 12:25Intellectual property.
- 12:27Income producing assets.
- 12:30Whatever makes sense for your financial situation.
- 12:35And this is where we begin moving from
- 12:37simply earning money to owning things.
- 12:41And I want to challenge something I hear
- 12:43constantly.
- 12:45I'll invest when I make more.
- 12:47I'll start when I get this debt paid
- 12:50off.
- 12:51I'll start when the kids are older.
- 12:54I'll start when I get the promotion.
- 12:56I'll start when things settle down.
- 13:00Be careful.
- 13:01Because life has a funny way of never
- 13:04completely settling down.
- 13:07There will always be another expense.
- 13:11Another responsibility.
- 13:14Another season.
- 13:17Another reason.
- 13:20And I'm not telling you to ignore debt
- 13:22or financial obligations.
- 13:23I'm telling you to stop thinking ownership belongs
- 13:26only to some future wealthier version of you.
- 13:31Ownership is not a reward you receive after
- 13:34becoming rich.
- 13:36Ownership is one of the behaviors that can
- 13:39help you build wealth.
- 13:41Those are two different ideas.
- 13:44You don't need to begin with the dramatic
- 13:47amount.
- 13:48Your own number might be really small at
- 13:51first.
- 13:53Fine.
- 13:53Small is not the same as meaningless.
- 13:57The habit is what matters.
- 14:00The category is what matters.
- 14:03The intention is what matters.
- 14:06Because once own becomes a legitimate line in
- 14:10your financial life, something changes.
- 14:13You start asking better questions.
- 14:16What am I buying?
- 14:18What does this money do after I spend
- 14:20it?
- 14:21Does this purchase disappear?
- 14:25Does it protect me?
- 14:27Does it grow?
- 14:29Does it produce?
- 14:32Does it create equity?
- 14:35Does it give me leverage?
- 14:38Does it give me options?
- 14:40That is ownership thinking.
- 14:43Now let's talk about the category that traditional
- 14:46budgeting sometimes makes women feel a little bit
- 14:50guilty about.
- 14:51Enjoy.
- 14:53Yes, enjoy.
- 14:54I'm putting enjoyment in the budget because you
- 14:57have a life right now.
- 15:00Not just 20 years from now.
- 15:03And I'm not interested in teaching women that
- 15:05financial responsibility requires permanent deprivation here.
- 15:09Have dinner with your friends.
- 15:11Take the trip when it fits your financial
- 15:13plan.
- 15:15Buy something because it's beautiful.
- 15:17Spend money on something that makes your life
- 15:19easier.
- 15:21Get that massage.
- 15:23Get your nails done.
- 15:25Buy the concert ticket.
- 15:27Whatever enjoyment looks like for you.
- 15:30The point is not to eliminate enjoyment.
- 15:33The point is to stop spending accidentally.
- 15:36There's a huge difference between saying I cannot
- 15:40spend money and saying I decided where this
- 15:43money belongs.
- 15:45One is restriction.
- 15:47The other is direction.
- 15:48And direction is what a good budget should
- 15:51give you.
- 15:53And this is why I don't want women
- 15:55fighting over whether buying coffee is ruining their
- 15:58financial future.
- 16:00Your coffee is probably not the central issue.
- 16:04The bigger question is whether you understand the
- 16:07structure of your financial life.
- 16:09If you're earning $100,000 a year and
- 16:13you have no emergency reserve, no meaningful assets
- 16:18outside of maybe your home or investments growing
- 16:22and no idea where thousands of dollars went
- 16:25last year, I'm much more interested in that
- 16:28than your $6 coffee.
- 16:31Because financial advice can become strangely obsessed with
- 16:35tiny purchases while ignoring structural behavior.
- 16:40Yes, small expenses add up.
- 16:43Of course they do.
- 16:44But so do years without ownership.
- 16:47So do years without investing.
- 16:50And years of lifestyle inflation.
- 16:53And so do years of automatically giving every
- 16:56raise to a more expensive life.
- 17:00And that's where I want us looking.
- 17:02Because here's another trap.
- 17:05You get the raise.
- 17:06Finally you get the raise.
- 17:07And you're making more money.
- 17:09And for about three months you feel rich.
- 17:12And then the car gets upgraded.
- 17:15And the house gets upgraded.
- 17:18And the vacations get upgraded.
- 17:21And the restaurants get upgraded.
- 17:23The subscriptions multiply.
- 17:26And you just start shopping differently.
- 17:29And suddenly the woman making $130,000 feels
- 17:32almost exactly as financially tight as the woman
- 17:36who used to make $80,000.
- 17:39The numbers changed.
- 17:41The feeling didn't.
- 17:43And that's why earning much more money is
- 17:48important.
- 17:48But earning more by itself isn't the entire
- 17:52answer.
- 17:54I mean income is powerful.
- 17:55But income needs direction.
- 17:58Otherwise more money can simply finance a more
- 18:02expensive version of the same financial vulnerability.
- 18:07And I want to say something specifically to
- 18:11high producing women.
- 18:14Because some of you listening are not struggling
- 18:18because you don't work enough.
- 18:21You work a lot.
- 18:24You produce.
- 18:27You lead.
- 18:29You manage.
- 18:31You solve everybody's problems.
- 18:34You may be the person people call when
- 18:37they need money.
- 18:39You may be the dependable daughter.
- 18:43The dependable mother.
- 18:46The dependable sister.
- 18:48The dependable friend.
- 18:50The dependable employee.
- 18:52The dependable business owner.
- 18:54And your financial life may reflect that.
- 18:58Everybody is represented in it.
- 19:01Except future you.
- 19:04That needs to change.
- 19:06There's nothing selfish about protecting your future.
- 19:11There's nothing selfish about investing.
- 19:14There's nothing selfish about having reserves.
- 19:19About wanting assets.
- 19:21There's nothing selfish about deciding that every dollar
- 19:25you earn cannot immediately become available to somebody
- 19:30else.
- 19:31Generosity without boundaries can sometimes become financial self
- 19:36-abandonment.
- 19:38And that's not what I want from us.
- 19:41You should be able to help people you
- 19:44love when you choose to.
- 19:46But I don't want you arriving at 65
- 19:49years old having rescued everybody except for yourself.
- 19:53That's not financial feminism.
- 19:57Ownership means you're on your own financial priority
- 20:00list.
- 20:01So let me give you something practical to
- 20:03do.
- 20:04No complicated spreadsheet.
- 20:06No 27 categories.
- 20:09No color-coded binder.
- 20:11Pull up the last 30 days of your
- 20:13transactions from your primary account.
- 20:1630 days.
- 20:17That's it.
- 20:18Don't judge anything.
- 20:20That is important.
- 20:21And don't immediately start saying, That was stupid.
- 20:25Or I can't believe I spent that.
- 20:27Or I should not have done that.
- 20:29Stop.
- 20:30We are just gathering information.
- 20:33That's all.
- 20:34So take four pieces of paper.
- 20:37Four columns.
- 20:39Four notes on your phone.
- 20:40Whatever works for you.
- 20:42And all I want you to do is
- 20:44write, Live.
- 20:47Protect.
- 20:48Own.
- 20:50Enjoy.
- 20:52Now I want you to sort your money.
- 20:53Where did it actually go?
- 20:56Not where you intended for it to go.
- 20:58Where did it go?
- 21:00Your rent might go under Live.
- 21:03Your emergency savings transfer goes under Protect.
- 21:10Your retirement contribution may go under Own.
- 21:15Dinner with your friends may go under Enjoy.
- 21:19Some things are going to require judgment.
- 21:22And that's fine.
- 21:23The purpose is not perfect accounting.
- 21:25The purpose is visibility.
- 21:28When you finish, What is there?
- 21:33Okay.
- 21:34I want you to look specifically at Own.
- 21:38What's in that category or column?
- 21:41Not what you plan to invest.
- 21:44Not what you intended to do.
- 21:46Not what you are going to do next
- 21:49month.
- 21:49What did you actually move towards ownership during
- 21:54those 30 days?
- 21:57Maybe that number makes you proud.
- 21:59Good.
- 22:01Maybe it surprises you.
- 22:04Good.
- 22:05Maybe it's zero.
- 22:07Good.
- 22:08Yes, I said good because now you know.
- 22:13Zero is information.
- 22:16We don't need shame to change a number.
- 22:20We need visibility here.
- 22:22And now I want you to ask yourself
- 22:24one of the most important questions in this
- 22:26entire episode.
- 22:28If I repeat this exact financial behavior for
- 22:31the next five years, what will I own?
- 22:36Not what will you earn?
- 22:38What will you own?
- 22:41If you continue doing exactly what you did
- 22:44during the last 30 days, where does that
- 22:47put you five years from now?
- 22:51That question may be a little bit uncomfortable,
- 22:54but ask it anyway.
- 22:56Because your financial future is built whether you
- 22:59intentionally build it or not.
- 23:02Every month is casting a vote.
- 23:05Every paycheck is participating.
- 23:08Every financial decision is moving something.
- 23:13And the question is where?
- 23:15And please do not hear this episode and
- 23:19decide you need to overhaul your entire financial
- 23:22life by Tuesday, okay?
- 23:24That's another reason people abandon budgets.
- 23:28We make these enormous promises to ourselves.
- 23:31No eating out, no shopping, save $2,000
- 23:34a month, pay off everything, invest, start a
- 23:37business, and two weeks later, normal life happens.
- 23:41And then we decide we failed.
- 23:43I would rather you make one decision you
- 23:46can sustain.
- 23:47Maybe your decision is to move $25 into
- 23:50own every payday.
- 23:54Maybe it's $100, maybe it's 500.
- 23:58Maybe your biggest issue is not own yet.
- 24:02Maybe protect needs attention first.
- 24:05Maybe you discover that your live number is
- 24:08consuming so much of your income that you
- 24:12need to examine a major expense instead of
- 24:15fighting over coffee.
- 24:18Maybe you realize you're putting plenty into own
- 24:22but absolutely nothing into enjoy.
- 24:26And you have made financial discipline so miserable
- 24:30that you can't sustain it.
- 24:33That's why we're here.
- 24:35And that's why there are four categories.
- 24:37Your financial life needs balance and intention.
- 24:42Live, protect, own, enjoy.
- 24:48And here's the financial feminism principle I want
- 24:51you to remember.
- 24:53A budget should not control the woman.
- 24:56The woman should control the budget.
- 24:59Your budget is not your mother.
- 25:01It's not punishment.
- 25:02It's not a monthly report card telling you
- 25:05whether you were good or bad.
- 25:07It's a decision document.
- 25:09It tells you whether today's money is supporting
- 25:12tomorrow's woman.
- 25:13That's it.
- 25:15And once you understand that budgeting becomes something
- 25:18very different.
- 25:19It becomes strategy.
- 25:22It becomes ownership.
- 25:24It becomes choice.
- 25:26It becomes a way of saying this is
- 25:29what matters to me.
- 25:31This is what I'm protecting.
- 25:33This is what I'm building.
- 25:36This is what I'm willing to spend.
- 25:39This is what I am not willing to
- 25:41sacrifice.
- 25:42This is where my money goes because I
- 25:44decided it goes there.
- 25:46That is power.
- 25:48So here's your assignment.
- 25:50Pull the 30 days.
- 25:53Sort the money.
- 25:54Remember live, protect, own, enjoy.
- 25:57And then ask which category needs my attention.
- 26:00And if I repeat this for five years,
- 26:04what will I own?
- 26:06And then I want you inside the financial
- 26:08feminism community.
- 26:10And no, I don't want your salary.
- 26:12I don't want your bank account.
- 26:13I don't want you posting personal financial information
- 26:16on the internet.
- 26:17I want one word.
- 26:19Live, protect, own, or enjoy.
- 26:23Tell us which category needs your attention.
- 26:27If you want to tell us what you
- 26:29discovered, tell us.
- 26:31If you want to help thinking through, well,
- 26:34maybe you want us to help you think,
- 26:36what should you examine next?
- 26:38Just ask.
- 26:39If you're comfortable posting one word, post one
- 26:44word.
- 26:45Because somebody else is going to see your
- 26:47answer and think, wait, I need to look
- 26:50at mine.
- 26:51And that is how financial feminism becomes more
- 26:54than something you listen to.
- 26:56We learn something.
- 26:58We look at our own lives and we
- 27:01make one move.
- 27:02We talk about what we discovered.
- 27:05We help another woman do the same.
- 27:08That is the movement.
- 27:09Because I don't want women simply earning more
- 27:12money.
- 27:13I want us owning more.
- 27:15I want us protecting more.
- 27:17I want us understanding more.
- 27:20I want us having more choices.
- 27:22And yes, I want us enjoying some of
- 27:25it too.
- 27:26You worked for it.
- 27:28So, the next time you catch yourself saying,
- 27:30I need to get on a budget, change
- 27:32the sentence.
- 27:34Say, I need to decide what my money
- 27:37is building.
- 27:38That's a completely different conversation.
- 27:41And before you leave, send this episode to
- 27:44one woman who keeps saying she needs to
- 27:47get on a better budget or get better
- 27:49with money.
- 27:51Maybe she doesn't need to hear another lecture
- 27:54about what to stop buying.
- 27:58Maybe she just needs someone to finally show
- 28:00her what her money could start building.
- 28:04And remember this.
- 28:05A budget should not tell a woman what
- 28:07she cannot have.
- 28:09It should show her what she is building.
- 28:12I'm Dr. Tanika Bruce.
- 28:14This is Financial Feminism and I will meet
- 28:16you inside the community.
