- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher's here, everybody, what's happening? All right? We've got
- 0:04Speaker 1: we are one week to training camp here, We've got
- 0:07Speaker 1: that two weeks. I guess a little bit.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Under Yeah, I was gonna say, let's not jump. Sorry, sorry, sorry.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Over at Philly Voice dot com, Jeff Moscher, you wrote
- 0:18Speaker 1: five obvious questions face non obvious questions. Excuse me facing
- 0:23Speaker 1: the Eagles heading into training camp. We're gonna dive into
- 0:26Speaker 1: that here, uh on Today's Football at four some very
- 0:29Speaker 1: interesting ones. I read this article, you know, before the
- 0:33Speaker 1: show today, and you asked a question that we've asked
- 0:37Speaker 1: a lot and a lot of our Mosher mailbag questions.
- 0:40Speaker 1: People have asked this question. Well, the Eagles finally throw
- 0:44Speaker 1: to their running backs, and I guess this question has
- 0:49Speaker 1: so many peoples of the onion. I'd like to hear
- 0:51Speaker 1: what you say about it first.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Well, as Adam and I talk about on Inside the.
- 0:55Speaker 3: Birds podcast all the time, the Eagles have certainly equipped
- 0:59Speaker 3: themselves with the players to do it, the running backs
- 1:02Speaker 3: who have pass catching acumen and good hands and good
- 1:06Speaker 3: run after catchability. And we've seen at times in training
- 1:10Speaker 3: camp an abundance of throws to running backs but the
- 1:14Speaker 3: statistics speak for themselves, Mike, I think one thing really
- 1:18Speaker 3: stands out right, and I put this in the story
- 1:21Speaker 3: that the Eagles last year got from Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby,
- 1:25Speaker 3: will Shipley, and aj Dillon fifty two catches for three
- 1:28Speaker 3: hundred and eighty two yards and two touchdowns, which is
- 1:31Speaker 3: like two games for Puka Nakua. But nonetheless, there were
- 1:35Speaker 3: six six running backs all together who had that much
- 1:40Speaker 3: by themselves. Okay, some of them are obvious McCaffrey, Bijeon,
- 1:44Speaker 3: Jamir Gibbs.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Okay, but one of them really stuck out. Do you
- 1:47Speaker 2: know which one that was.
- 1:51Speaker 3: I didn't know if you got a chance to look
- 1:52Speaker 3: at all the six names there of guys who had more. Yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 3: I'm trying to just I'll play. I'll give you the spoiler,
- 2:00Speaker 3: all right. Kenneth Gainwell was one of the six. He
- 2:03Speaker 3: had sixty nine catches for four hundred and eighty six
- 2:06Speaker 3: yards and three touchdowns. This is a guy that didn't
- 2:10Speaker 3: have that in his last three years combined with the Eagles.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Which because in college he played wide receiver, so we
- 2:17Speaker 1: really thought that he was going to catch the ball
- 2:19Speaker 1: a lot.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he was a running back in college
- 2:22Speaker 2: who caught the ball. He wasn't. I think he may
- 2:24Speaker 2: have transferred at one point.
- 2:27Speaker 1: They had all those running backs year. They played him
- 2:28Speaker 1: a lot in the spot.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yes they did.
- 2:31Speaker 3: That is absolutely true, and if we never saw it,
- 2:34Speaker 3: and yet there he goes.
- 2:36Speaker 2: He goes to the Steelers, right, not exactly a.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Great passing offense, and explodes for sixty nine catches, four
- 2:42Speaker 3: hundred and eighty six yards and three touchdowns. So only
- 2:46Speaker 3: two teams Mike had fewer catches and receiving yards from
- 2:50Speaker 3: their running backs last year than the Eagles. One was
- 2:52Speaker 3: the Commanders, one was the Rams. The Rams liked to
- 2:55Speaker 3: normally throw. I mean, Sean McVay likes is running backs.
- 2:58Speaker 3: She saw Todd Gurley in his Hey, they have a
- 3:00Speaker 3: lot of yards. But you know, Kyen Williams and Playcourn
- 3:03Speaker 3: aren't those kind of guys, so they don't do it,
- 3:05Speaker 3: and they don't.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Really need to do it. I just think it's fascinating
- 3:09Speaker 2: that you.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Have a guy like Saquon Barkley who had a ninety
- 3:11Speaker 3: one catch rookie season with the Giants. Now, some of
- 3:15Speaker 3: that was out of necessity, but it shows he has
- 3:17Speaker 3: the ability to do it, and they can't.
- 3:21Speaker 2: They don't get the ball to their running backs in
- 3:23Speaker 2: the past game.
- 3:24Speaker 1: No, they don't. Is this offense more tailored to that?
- 3:27Speaker 1: Do you think?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Well, So, let's look at some of the names of
- 3:30Speaker 3: the guys who had more on their own than the
- 3:33Speaker 3: Eagles last year. Okay, Christian McCaffrey, Shanahan offense, John Robinson,
- 3:38Speaker 3: that was last year with the play caller was Zach Robinson,
- 3:43Speaker 3: who is a Shanahan branch. He's with I think Tampa
- 3:46Speaker 3: Bay now, but yeah, So he's number two with seventy
- 3:49Speaker 3: nine catches rat twenty yards. Devon Han Mike McDaniel offense
- 3:53Speaker 3: seventy three catches for eighty eight. We all know McDaniel
- 3:56Speaker 3: offense is an offshoot of the Shanahan offense. So three
- 3:59Speaker 3: of the top four guys come from that kind of
- 4:02Speaker 3: an offense. And I did mention in the story that
- 4:05Speaker 3: the Packers, where Sean Mannion came from, they got four
- 4:10Speaker 3: hundred and seventy two yards on sixty four catches last year,
- 4:13Speaker 3: which is not a whole lot more than the Eagles got,
- 4:15Speaker 3: but they don't really. I mean, Josh Jacobs is more
- 4:18Speaker 3: of a run He's never had a ninety one catch
- 4:20Speaker 3: season like Barkley, and they're much They're a run heavy team.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Manyon's gonna come here and see he's got guys that
- 4:28Speaker 3: can catch the ball, Mike. The reason they drafted will
- 4:30Speaker 3: Shipley in the fourth round. Someone told me this specifically,
- 4:33Speaker 3: if you go look at his numbers at Clemson, he
- 4:35Speaker 3: caught the ball a little bit, not a lot. But
- 4:37Speaker 3: they felt through the pre draft cycle the Combine watching him,
- 4:43Speaker 3: they thought he had more receiving chops than even Clemson
- 4:46Speaker 3: was using him for. They thought they could weaponize it
- 4:48Speaker 3: even more. But that hasn't come to fruition either.
- 4:50Speaker 1: No one has not No one has really done much.
- 4:54Speaker 1: The last time the Eagles had a guy catch the
- 4:56Speaker 1: ball out of the backfield, I guess was.
- 5:01Speaker 2: I mean had one yeah, Peters yeah, and Shady caught
- 5:08Speaker 2: the ball out. I mean they had that lineage of
- 5:10Speaker 2: from Brian Westbrook to Shady to.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Who was after Shait I can't even remember. At this
- 5:16Speaker 3: point they had another guy who catch them pat They
- 5:17Speaker 3: went through a little under chip. They didn't do it
- 5:19Speaker 3: as much right. They had to Marco Murray and guys
- 5:21Speaker 3: like Ryan Matthews. But when Doug took over he went
- 5:24Speaker 3: back to try and get the ball to the running
- 5:26Speaker 3: backs hands in.
- 5:27Speaker 2: The passing game. All right, let's go Corey Clement.
- 5:29Speaker 3: We all remember Corey Clement right catching the one hundred
- 5:33Speaker 3: yards in the Super Bowl?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Right, third string running back?
- 5:37Speaker 1: Question two, who will generate explosives in the past game
- 5:42Speaker 1: other than DeVonta Smith, who was not favorably by executives
- 5:49Speaker 1: by the way in the ESPN poll.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I saw that, you know. I think it's a
- 5:55Speaker 2: really interesting question.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Do I think that DeVante Smith will have more explosives.
- 6:03Speaker 2: This year because of his high value? Yeah?
- 6:05Speaker 3: Sure, I do think you do. But he'll also be
- 6:06Speaker 3: the focal point. Now, Davonte Smith did not run the
- 6:09Speaker 3: forty in.
- 6:10Speaker 2: At Oklahoma, at a Pro Day or at the combine.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Because when you're a top ten pick and you don't
- 6:17Speaker 3: run an elite forty, you don't need to run elate forty,
- 6:20Speaker 3: and he doesn't. He's a great route runner, but he's
- 6:22Speaker 3: not blinding speed. He can still beat guys over the top,
- 6:25Speaker 3: but that is not his game. But when he faces
- 6:28Speaker 3: a double team or extra defensive attention, who is going
- 6:32Speaker 3: to be the person that steps up? Because Nick Sirianni
- 6:35Speaker 3: always preaches two main principles. One win the explosive battles
- 6:38Speaker 3: to win the turnover battle. So who's gonna win Help
- 6:42Speaker 3: the Eagles win the explosive battle on those games where
- 6:44Speaker 3: Devonte Smith is, you know, commanding a lot of defensive attention.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Then their next receiver with the highest yards per catch
- 6:52Speaker 3: average is Dontavian Wicks at twelve point three. But that's
- 6:56Speaker 3: a very you know, I think if he gets more usage,
- 6:59Speaker 3: that number is likely to regress.
- 7:01Speaker 2: He's not a beat over the top guy.
- 7:02Speaker 3: He was the fourth option on a Packers offense and
- 7:05Speaker 3: he did most of his work in the middle of
- 7:07Speaker 3: the field into either one on ones or against zone
- 7:10Speaker 3: right Marquise Brown should be that guy because he runs
- 7:13Speaker 3: a four to two seven, but his career for three
- 7:15Speaker 3: teams and seven seasons, career yards per catch is eleven
- 7:19Speaker 3: point six, which suggests that his speed mike has been
- 7:23Speaker 3: straight line speed and just hasn't really parlayed into becoming
- 7:26Speaker 3: a true.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Vertical deep threat.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Allah to Sean Jackson, who he got a lot of
- 7:31Speaker 3: comparisons to Dallas Goddard, eleven point four yards per catch
- 7:35Speaker 3: is really good for a tight end.
- 7:36Speaker 2: But I don't think you ever want your tight end
- 7:37Speaker 2: to be your second option for beating for explosives.
- 7:42Speaker 3: And last year he was at a career low in
- 7:44Speaker 3: yards per catch, and he's getting older. And then of
- 7:46Speaker 3: course Makai Lemon, Mike is a guy who also not
- 7:49Speaker 3: known for in college for beating guys over the top
- 7:53Speaker 3: or stressing defenses vertically more yards after the catch over
- 7:57Speaker 3: the middle, will probably play a lot of slot with
- 7:59Speaker 3: the Eagles. So I think it's fair to say who's
- 8:01Speaker 3: gonna who's gonna really be the beneficiary of the beautiful
- 8:07Speaker 3: long balls, especially deep down the sideline.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that Jillen hurt Rosh. It's not Devonte Smith.
- 8:12Speaker 1: That will be h Lemon's an interesting one because you're right,
- 8:15Speaker 1: not a big time but he did do it from
- 8:17Speaker 1: time to time. It was like they it was almost
- 8:19Speaker 1: like they snuck him in there. It was like a
- 8:21Speaker 1: sneaky way to use him there.
- 8:23Speaker 2: All right?
- 8:24Speaker 1: Will Vic Fangio use a deeper edge rotation this season
- 8:30Speaker 1: than he has in the past?
- 8:32Speaker 2: All right? So Vic came to the Eagles.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Adam and I discussed this on a recent Inside the
- 8:36Speaker 3: Birds pod, and I shed a little more light on
- 8:38Speaker 3: it in the Philly Voice story. Vic came to the
- 8:40Speaker 3: Eagles already with a reputation of not being a big
- 8:45Speaker 3: rotational guy. You remember when Jim Schwartz was here and
- 8:48Speaker 3: when I always think that the the epitome of what
- 8:51Speaker 3: you want in a defensive front is what Jim Schwartz
- 8:54Speaker 3: had in twenty seventeen. He played like eight guys up front, right,
- 8:58Speaker 3: he had his starting four, but then guys like Chris
- 9:00Speaker 3: Long and Bo Allen and Derek Barnett would come off
- 9:04Speaker 3: the bench. You know, Curry would come off, Brandon Graham
- 9:07Speaker 3: would move inside. I mean he would play eight guys
- 9:09Speaker 3: up front and keep everybody fresh.
- 9:11Speaker 2: All right. Well, Vic is the opposite of that.
- 9:14Speaker 3: He finds his best players and rides him into the
- 9:18Speaker 3: mileage until they drop.
- 9:21Speaker 2: And look, that's worked for him.
- 9:22Speaker 3: I'm not challenging it, but he really has only played
- 9:25Speaker 3: a three man edge rotation in his two years as
- 9:28Speaker 3: defensive coordinator. But you've got Jonathan Garnard, You've got k
- 9:32Speaker 3: Alex Hunt, you have Nolan Smith junior. And they paid
- 9:35Speaker 3: seven and a half million dollars with four and a
- 9:37Speaker 3: half million guaranteed to Arnold Abakeetti because they Howie liked me,
- 9:42Speaker 3: brought him in here during the draft you know, didn't
- 9:44Speaker 3: have a chance, didn't get the opportunity to draft him,
- 9:46Speaker 3: but likes him and brought him in. I think it's
- 9:49Speaker 3: stants the reason, with Grenard coming off a shoulder injury,
- 9:51Speaker 3: with Nolan Smith already having shoulder and triceps injuries as
- 9:55Speaker 3: an Eagle, and with Ebiuetty here to expand your rotation
- 9:59Speaker 3: a little bit, keep guys fresh and if you've got
- 10:02Speaker 3: talented players playing. So my question is will Vic alter
- 10:06Speaker 3: his approach a little bit and play more players.
- 10:11Speaker 1: That'll be interesting Because you mentioned he likes Ebakeetty meaning Roseman.
- 10:15Speaker 1: He also brought in Huff and ye, Vic said, I
- 10:20Speaker 1: don't care. I'm not using the guy right, right, so
- 10:23Speaker 1: he won't be pressured into using him for that reason, right.
- 10:27Speaker 3: And listen, I'm not advocating playing somebody if they stink, okay,
- 10:30Speaker 3: So I'm not holding it against Vic.
- 10:32Speaker 1: No, but you also you bring that up. And then
- 10:35Speaker 1: last year he did bring in they did They brought
- 10:38Speaker 1: in to like and uh it was the other guy
- 10:41Speaker 1: who uh from the Giants and Vic never gave them
- 10:46Speaker 1: any reps either. I mean a little early, but they
- 10:48Speaker 1: got phased out pretty quickly.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Yeah, started off the season before they had Phillips and
- 10:52Speaker 3: who was in their rotation. I actually thought he was
- 10:54Speaker 3: playing decently. I mean as a whole. They were not
- 10:57Speaker 3: a tenacious pass run. There's a huge diference between Ucha
- 11:01Speaker 3: and Jale and Phillips, I'll be the first to admit.
- 11:03Speaker 3: And then Ojelari got hurt. But toward the end of
- 11:05Speaker 3: the season, when he had his three man rotation of
- 11:08Speaker 3: Phillips and Hunt and Smith, he.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Didn't play anybody else.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Even when Ojelari got healthy, and even with Ooch fine
- 11:16Speaker 3: and somewhat productive for the first I mean, those guys
- 11:18Speaker 3: were basically collecting dust. So there was a big disparity
- 11:22Speaker 3: between the top three and everybody else on the team.
- 11:24Speaker 1: No doubt. And I and I had thought that Ojelari
- 11:28Speaker 1: would have helped them out more. They never gave him
- 11:30Speaker 1: a shot at all.
- 11:31Speaker 3: All right, Yeah, I mean he did get hurt, he
- 11:33Speaker 3: was he was out quite a bit, but you're right
- 11:35Speaker 3: when he got back there, it was basically a done
- 11:38Speaker 3: deal for him.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Yeah, this one, I'm interested to see what you say. Uh,
- 11:42Speaker 1: Will Cooper Dejean played more snaps at safety than he
- 11:45Speaker 1: did at outside corner.
- 11:47Speaker 3: All right, this is fascinating for me, and this isn't
- 11:49Speaker 3: really this is just this is more about Eagles opponents
- 11:52Speaker 3: than it is about the Eagles mic and more about
- 11:55Speaker 3: a trend around the league. Okay, Cooper de Gene last
- 11:59Speaker 3: year played outside corner only when the Eagles were in
- 12:01Speaker 3: base defense. Okay, with they play based defense, meaning three linebackers,
- 12:06Speaker 3: so no slot corner, so Dejean would play the outside
- 12:09Speaker 3: corner and Adori would be on the bench. And that's
- 12:12Speaker 3: usually when the offense was in two tight ends or
- 12:15Speaker 3: three tight ends you know, bigger run looking formations.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Okay, well, now this year.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Cooper is gonna play safety in those bas because they're
- 12:22Speaker 3: gonna play wooll in outside corner full time.
- 12:24Speaker 2: That's what Vic said. All right, So last year they.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Were only in base defense twenty two percent of the
- 12:32Speaker 3: time because they faced the most snaps in the NFL
- 12:34Speaker 3: of eleven personnel, which is three widide receivers if you
- 12:38Speaker 3: look at their schedule this year, Mike, and then the
- 12:41Speaker 3: growing trend of the league is more teams are using
- 12:44Speaker 3: more tight ends. They're putting two tight ends on the
- 12:46Speaker 3: field a lot more than they ever have.
- 12:48Speaker 2: At least in the last twenty years.
- 12:50Speaker 3: And we saw the Rams put three tight ends on
- 12:52Speaker 3: the field and blow away to the rest of the
- 12:55Speaker 3: league in three tight end personnel packageses like thirty crazy, right,
- 13:00Speaker 3: They're doing that because they're trying to keep defenses in
- 13:03Speaker 3: base because that is where you have fewer pass rushers,
- 13:07Speaker 3: you have bigger bodies.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:09Speaker 3: So if that's the trend and the team look at
- 13:11Speaker 3: the whole league is gonna play, they'n play Washington right
- 13:14Speaker 3: off the bat. Washington's gonna be a twelve personnel team,
- 13:16Speaker 3: maybe even thirteen.
- 13:18Speaker 2: We'll see weeks three, four, and five.
- 13:20Speaker 3: They're gonna play the Rams, who I just told you
- 13:23Speaker 3: last year played the most thirteen personnel in league. The
- 13:25Speaker 3: Bears just drafted another tight end. They already have Comet,
- 13:28Speaker 3: they already have Coulson Lovelin. They drafted routs in the
- 13:31Speaker 3: third round. He loves Ben Johnson's a big McVeigh guy.
- 13:34Speaker 3: I think that they're getting ready to play a lot
- 13:36Speaker 3: of thirteen.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Personnel as well.
- 13:38Speaker 3: And then the Jaguars just drafted a tight end in
- 13:40Speaker 3: the second round. They're gonna be a heavy twelve personnel team.
- 13:43Speaker 3: So what I'm saying is, if vic is facing twelve
- 13:46Speaker 3: personnel and he's playing base defense, against it, You're gonna
- 13:49Speaker 3: see Cooper the team play safety a whole lot more
- 13:52Speaker 3: than he did last year playing outside corner, and then
- 13:55Speaker 3: we're gonna get a true idea of how good of
- 13:57Speaker 3: a safety he is, and also how good the Eagles
- 14:01Speaker 3: defense is when he's at safety, Jordan Davis is on
- 14:05Speaker 3: the field and they're in less of a pass rush mode.
- 14:08Speaker 1: See. And I was talking about this with I guess
- 14:10Speaker 1: it was yesterday with Adam, which is Cooper Degen has
- 14:14Speaker 1: been a highly impactful player for this team. Do they
- 14:18Speaker 1: believe absolutely, do they believe that he will be more
- 14:23Speaker 1: impactful in this role than the role that he has
- 14:26Speaker 1: previously had the last two years.
- 14:30Speaker 3: That's a great question, you know, if you're asking me
- 14:33Speaker 3: for my personal opinion is that they're playing him at
- 14:35Speaker 3: safety and base because they just don't have anybody better.
- 14:38Speaker 3: He's a good player, But where is he most impact
- 14:42Speaker 3: the game? It's clearly been from the nickelback position. You know,
- 14:46Speaker 3: last year as an outside corner, he was okay, yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 3: you know, it isn't terrible. He wasn't great. I don't
- 14:50Speaker 3: think so. I don't know what the PFF grades were.
- 14:52Speaker 3: I don't even really put a lot of stock into that.
- 14:55Speaker 3: I don't know how often he was thrown out anyway,
- 14:58Speaker 3: But as a nickel interior, slot corner, whatever you want
- 15:02Speaker 3: to call it, he's very, very impactful because he stops
- 15:05Speaker 3: the run well, he can blitz from that spot. He
- 15:09Speaker 3: can obviously covers tight ends and slot receivers from that spot.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Really well, he's just a nice he's a great, He's
- 15:18Speaker 3: probably he might be the best nickel corner or nicol
- 15:21Speaker 3: as Vick would call it a slot in the league.
- 15:24Speaker 3: So that's where he makes most of his impact, which
- 15:27Speaker 3: is why I wonder if teams are going to intentionally
- 15:29Speaker 3: try to go heavy up and get him out of
- 15:32Speaker 3: that spot and have him at safety.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Yeah, not that he can't make an impact from there.
- 15:35Speaker 1: But yeah, it's just so weird. And you say, you
- 15:36Speaker 1: have this guy that has been an impactful player for
- 15:39Speaker 1: you in a role. That'd be like saying, you know,
- 15:42Speaker 1: we've got an edge rusher, let's slide him into play
- 15:45Speaker 1: defensive tackle because he's big enough to do it. Even
- 15:47Speaker 1: though he had eighteen and a half sacks last year. Now,
- 15:49Speaker 1: I'm not saying that Cooper was eighteen. You know, he
- 15:52Speaker 1: didn't have like eight picks and whatever. But it feels
- 15:55Speaker 1: like a guy who has been very good at what
- 15:58Speaker 1: he did in the past. Now you're saying, yes, but
- 16:00Speaker 1: these teams in what they're gonna do, is not going
- 16:03Speaker 1: to allow him to have the same impact.
- 16:06Speaker 3: I think what they're going to try to do is
- 16:09Speaker 3: mitigate his impact from the slot and see if they
- 16:12Speaker 3: can just get him to safety.
- 16:15Speaker 2: But Vic doesn't have VIC.
- 16:17Speaker 3: You can play Nickel against twelve personnel if you're confident
- 16:21Speaker 3: in your ability to stop the run out of it.
- 16:24Speaker 3: And I imagine Vic will make some adjustments there and
- 16:27Speaker 3: believe that he's got pretty good run stop, although we've
- 16:29Speaker 3: seen that leaky in run defense last year. So I
- 16:33Speaker 3: think it's a big cat and mouse game that I
- 16:35Speaker 3: can't wait to see how it plays out.
- 16:37Speaker 1: All right, let's go to the fifth and final question
- 16:41Speaker 1: from your Philly Voice article on five questions that have
- 16:45Speaker 1: been kind of under the radar for the Eagles. This
- 16:48Speaker 1: one's interesting because a lot of people have asked, why
- 16:50Speaker 1: didn't the Eagles bring someone in to challenge Jake Elliott?
- 16:55Speaker 1: Can they depend on Jake Elliott if they want to
- 16:57Speaker 1: win the Super Bowl?
- 16:59Speaker 2: I think it's a fair question.
- 17:01Speaker 3: I know someone can say so in twenty twenty four,
- 17:03Speaker 3: they won the Super Bowl. He declined that year, he
- 17:06Speaker 3: went from like a ninety eight percent accuracy to a
- 17:08Speaker 3: seventy eight percent. That's a huge shop and yet they
- 17:11Speaker 3: still won the Super Bowl. But you go back to
- 17:14Speaker 3: last year, he went down a seventy four percent accuracy.
- 17:17Speaker 2: I believe it was one of seven on kicks of
- 17:20Speaker 2: fifty or more.
- 17:21Speaker 3: All right, So he's losing his accuracy, he's losing his distance.
- 17:26Speaker 3: And look no further than the playoff game against the
- 17:29Speaker 3: Niners Dallas. Goddard catches a touchdown that should have tied
- 17:33Speaker 3: the game at seven to seven, but he missed the
- 17:35Speaker 3: pat so it was seven to six. So when you
- 17:38Speaker 3: get down to your final drive in the fourth quarter,
- 17:40Speaker 3: you're down by four instead of three. Right, So on
- 17:44Speaker 3: the final play of the game, fourth and eleven, the
- 17:47Speaker 3: infamous fourth and eleven and four verts call against that. Look, right,
- 17:52Speaker 3: you don't have to pay, you don't have to run
- 17:54Speaker 3: a play there. If it's three, you're kicking a field goal,
- 17:57Speaker 3: and it was only like a thirty something yarder. He
- 17:59Speaker 3: was perfect on his kicks between thirty and thirty nine
- 18:03Speaker 3: yards last year, so you could tie the game there.
- 18:06Speaker 3: On a field goal if you're only down by three,
- 18:09Speaker 3: but because he missed the pat, Mike they had were
- 18:12Speaker 3: down by four, they lose because they don't get the
- 18:15Speaker 3: ball into the end zone on the last play. So
- 18:18Speaker 3: you can make a you can directly say that Jake
- 18:22Speaker 3: Elliott missing a pat, which he's a huge part of
- 18:25Speaker 3: the Eagles losing in the first round, and he's already
- 18:28Speaker 3: been on decline for two straight years now.
- 18:30Speaker 1: Well. And one of the big things that it does, Jeff,
- 18:34Speaker 1: is where you will elect to kick a field goal from, Like,
- 18:39Speaker 1: if you're on the twenty five yard line, do you
- 18:41Speaker 1: feel okay attempting a field goal? You know what I mean?
- 18:43Speaker 1: Like that is a big difference of like, hey, if
- 18:46Speaker 1: we're at the thirty three yard line and we can't
- 18:49Speaker 1: trust this guy.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean we're in an era now where I
- 18:53Speaker 3: think Ryan Pagnette, who used to work for the Eagles.
- 18:55Speaker 2: And you know, he was their analytics guy.
- 18:57Speaker 3: He was Doug Peterson's voice in his ear on analytics
- 19:00Speaker 3: decisions and fourth downs. He's doing a lot of great
- 19:02Speaker 3: work on Twitter, and he put out a post recently,
- 19:06Speaker 3: you know, talking about just fifteen years ago.
- 19:09Speaker 2: You'd be shocked if a guy kicked a fifty five
- 19:11Speaker 2: yard field goal.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Now, last year it was almost like no one's surprised.
- 19:17Speaker 3: There were a record number of field goals between fifty
- 19:19Speaker 3: and fifty five yards or fifty five.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Yards or longer.
- 19:21Speaker 3: And here's Jake Elliott who's doing the opposite. He's regressing.
- 19:26Speaker 3: He cannot make long field goals anymore. He's costing the
- 19:29Speaker 3: team points. He's forcing the team to have to go
- 19:32Speaker 3: for it in fourth down, in teams in positions where
- 19:36Speaker 3: they'd rather have to kick the field goal there. I
- 19:38Speaker 3: can't imagine how many points the Cowboys have been able
- 19:41Speaker 3: to score right because of Brandon Aubrey's leg like total
- 19:45Speaker 3: in totality over a season compared to twenty years ago.
- 19:48Speaker 3: If you couldn't make a fifty plus yard field goal
- 19:51Speaker 3: with regularity, yeah, I mean he's probably.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Added I don't know, fifty points. Who knows. It's a huge.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Number, right, You see guys attempting fifty nine, sixty, sixty two,
- 20:01Speaker 1: sixty three yards with regularity.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Now, yeah, yeah, that's just the way the game is.
- 20:05Speaker 3: So I don't I don't know in this era anymore.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Like Ken the Eagles win a Super Bowl, Yeah, sure,
- 20:10Speaker 3: maybe they score like four touchdowns and don't need any
- 20:13Speaker 3: field goals in this if they make the right But
- 20:15Speaker 3: the reality is it's tough if you can't depend on your.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Can so can they At this point, would it be
- 20:21Speaker 1: shocking to bring in someone for training camp, like, even
- 20:28Speaker 1: even if the guy has no shot to make the team,
- 20:30Speaker 1: just for the perception that there's a that there's somebody
- 20:33Speaker 1: here to challenge you. That's what I said. That's why
- 20:36Speaker 1: I said, Adam me. Well, that's why I said, Adam
- 20:39Speaker 1: is the fact that they didn't just say, hey, there's
- 20:41Speaker 1: a young kid in here with a booming leg, you
- 20:45Speaker 1: got to beat him out, or even if you'd have
- 20:47Speaker 1: no intention of keeping that guy, just to show Elliott
- 20:51Speaker 1: that there is someone you brought nobody in, you've given
- 20:54Speaker 1: him this job.
- 20:56Speaker 3: It's weird they asked, you know, if they required him
- 20:58Speaker 3: to take a pay cut, you agree to it, but
- 21:00Speaker 3: it was.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Just a million dollars.
- 21:01Speaker 3: It's like, I don't I would love to understand or
- 21:05Speaker 3: be a fly on the wall during like the meetings
- 21:08Speaker 3: and negotiations of all right, we're not happy with what
- 21:11Speaker 3: he's doing. We're gonna have him to take a pay cut.
- 21:13Speaker 3: Where'd you come up with a million, Like why a million?
- 21:16Speaker 3: Why not a million point one point two? Why not
- 21:19Speaker 3: half a million? I just don't know, Like I guess
- 21:21Speaker 3: that has to do with the market and where he's
- 21:22Speaker 3: at and the numbers.
- 21:24Speaker 2: But they asked.
- 21:25Speaker 3: You don't get asked to take a pay cut if
- 21:26Speaker 3: they're really really happy with everything you're doing. So I
- 21:29Speaker 3: think that's the first sign mic that there might be
- 21:32Speaker 3: something on the horizon. And no, it would not shock
- 21:35Speaker 3: me if something now. Maybe not right away, maybe they
- 21:38Speaker 3: give him the first week a camp, see how it's going,
- 21:40Speaker 3: but it wouldn't shock me if they brought some competition
- 21:43Speaker 3: in at some point, all.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Right, Jeff Boscher And football at four of course, every
- 21:46Speaker 1: day at four o'clock right here on the Sports Bass Life,
- 21:49Speaker 1: we look at football, and we will have football coming
- 21:51Speaker 1: up in just about two weeks when the Eagles report
- 21:54Speaker 1: July twenty eighth, and they will be on the practice
- 21:56Speaker 1: field July the twenty ninth,
