- 0:13Speaker 1: Hey, guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coleen Witt, and today we have very
- 0:18Speaker 1: special guest, comedian actor Lance Woods is in the building.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Thank you so much for having me. It smells good
- 0:28Speaker 2: in here. It does like there's been some cooking going.
- 0:31Speaker 1: They would say this, there was a girl that made
- 0:33Speaker 1: us really good tacos. Yes, tacos.
- 0:36Speaker 2: That what kind of tacos?
- 0:38Speaker 1: They were ground turkey. But what made her tacos good
- 0:41Speaker 1: was she did this, like she fried the flower and
- 0:44Speaker 1: it was like a puffy like pastry type. It was
- 0:47Speaker 1: really good. It was like all snap, I had to
- 0:49Speaker 1: call cut.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And I like it when people get creative with normal ingredients.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Yeah. I never had tacos like that, but that.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Means like my tacos Sea, I fried the lettuce and
- 1:01Speaker 2: then and I seized all the cheese individually. People got
- 1:06Speaker 2: some things that they do a regular you never thought about.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Never. Never. But speaking of that, I have a slang
- 1:14Speaker 1: on the show that goes the broker the dish, the
- 1:16Speaker 1: better the story. Okay, And lately I get these dishes
- 1:20Speaker 1: and they're like twenty dollars thirty dollars worth of ingredients. Yes,
- 1:23Speaker 1: it does feed the whole family. But when we saw
- 1:25Speaker 1: your email, it was very simple. Go ahead and tell
- 1:27Speaker 1: our listeners what it is you're gonna have me eating today.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna tell you the dish first. This is
- 1:34Speaker 2: just some cinnamon toast, not just it is cinnamon toast.
- 1:38Speaker 2: The ingredients are simple. You need bread, you need butter,
- 1:40Speaker 2: you need sugar, you need cinnamon, You need a toaster
- 1:43Speaker 2: or a oven.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Yeah, there we go. I saw that and I was like,
- 1:47Speaker 1: oh yes, thank god, Oh my gosh. We ain't got
- 1:49Speaker 1: to do a whole lot of shop, but we could
- 1:50Speaker 1: just stop by.
- 1:51Speaker 2: You pick some stuff up.
- 1:53Speaker 1: And this is stuff stuff you have in your fridg
- 1:55Speaker 1: at home guys. Cinnamon and sugar and butter. So really,
- 1:59Speaker 1: if you're out of bread, that's the only thing you
- 2:00Speaker 1: need to get. So that's it.
- 2:02Speaker 2: You're gonna get some bread.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, go ahead and start making the cinnamon toast.
- 2:08Speaker 2: So I'm gonna start cooking it right now.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Oh man, do I get out? Stay? Do I stay seated?
- 2:14Speaker 2: Do I?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Really, it's up to you. It's up to you. This
- 2:16Speaker 1: is your moment, This is your chef moment.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Can y'all hear me? You can see me still right, yeah,
- 2:21Speaker 2: and you were in alive you said what you oh duh.
- 2:25Speaker 2: So look first you take your bread. Damn, take your bread,
- 2:29Speaker 2: and you put it in the toaster. Now when you
- 2:31Speaker 2: now this is key. When you put it in the toaster,
- 2:34Speaker 2: you don't just drop it in the toaster. No, you
- 2:36Speaker 2: place it in the toaster. Show your bread some love,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know what I mean. You make this dish with love.
- 2:42Speaker 2: It's like dropping your baby off at school. You don't
- 2:44Speaker 2: just you say hey, and you know what I mean.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Then you set the toaster for it's good. Depending on
- 2:49Speaker 2: how you like your toast. No, I mean, if you
- 2:51Speaker 2: want some light skin toast, you go a little more
- 2:54Speaker 2: that way. You want some dark skinned toast, you go
- 2:55Speaker 2: a little more that way. You know what I mean.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Right now we are that's right in the middle.
- 3:00Speaker 1: The comedy's already started.
- 3:01Speaker 2: I mean, so we're right in the middle. You know
- 3:03Speaker 2: what I mean on the colorism of the toast. Now,
- 3:07Speaker 2: everybody has a different method when it comes to pushing
- 3:10Speaker 2: the toast. To me, I like to use these two fingers.
- 3:15Speaker 2: This is my toaster fingers, you know what I mean.
- 3:17Speaker 2: So then when you take these fingers.
- 3:18Speaker 1: I'm sorry for all your listeners out there just wanting
- 3:20Speaker 1: to hear his backstory.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And you toast that, and you just let that happen.
- 3:24Speaker 2: You let that toast happen. That when the toast is toasted,
- 3:27Speaker 2: that's when you are anticipating. You feel me. You're getting
- 3:30Speaker 2: excited about what's about to happen. You know what I'm saying,
- 3:33Speaker 2: because oh, this is about to be fantastic. Now if
- 3:36Speaker 2: you can eat this without the bread being toasted, but
- 3:39Speaker 2: then it ain't the same.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I couldn't imagine anything without bread toasted, because.
- 3:43Speaker 2: You shouldn't imagine that. That's something you shouldn't imagine. You
- 3:46Speaker 2: got it. If it ain't toasted, it ain't the same.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Have you ever done it toasted?
- 3:50Speaker 2: Absolutely not.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that sounds absolutely not.
- 3:53Speaker 2: No, I would never. I don't even so I used to.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I'm sorry, this is real to be going back to
- 3:59Speaker 2: the origins.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Yes, that was what I was about to ask you.
- 4:03Speaker 2: We're going back to the origins of being broke when
- 4:06Speaker 2: you I got grew up in a house. I had
- 4:08Speaker 2: two siblings. I'm in the middle. Yeah, I'm the favorite.
- 4:13Speaker 2: You got to feed three children, and so it's a
- 4:16Speaker 2: lot of bulk stuff, bread, cereal, snacks, big like just
- 4:23Speaker 2: filling things. Right, should have a lot of bread because
- 4:25Speaker 2: bread is cheap, and you can get a good amount
- 4:27Speaker 2: of bread and you make the sandwiches and all of that,
- 4:30Speaker 2: and then sometimes you might run out of meat for
- 4:33Speaker 2: the sandwich, the cheese or whatever. So now you gotta
- 4:36Speaker 2: get a different kind of creative when it comes. We
- 4:38Speaker 2: got all this bread, what we're gonna do with it?
- 4:40Speaker 2: You know what I mean? So I used to eat
- 4:41Speaker 2: bread balls. You ever had a bread ball? You want
- 4:44Speaker 2: to try one?
- 4:45Speaker 1: I'm down to try bread ball. Okay, No, never mind.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I think I know what you're gonna do.
- 4:49Speaker 2: I'm not gonna do anything. You're gonna do it. It's
- 4:51Speaker 2: a bread it's your bread ball.
- 4:53Speaker 1: All right, let's do this. Okay, I think I know
- 4:56Speaker 1: what he's gonna make me do.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Take that bread. Welcome to there you go. Ball it up,
- 5:02Speaker 2: ball it up.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Not the crust, that's that's yo.
- 5:05Speaker 2: You know what I mean. If you were a cruster,
- 5:07Speaker 2: or if you were not crust, that's on you.
- 5:09Speaker 1: I'm gonna take off the crust.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Okay, take off the crust.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I'm gonna be a special. I'm gonna be one of those. Mom,
- 5:14Speaker 1: don't waste the bread.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I have.
- 5:18Speaker 1: A feeling I'm not gonna the bread ball.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Yeah, you took a lot of the bread off when
- 5:21Speaker 2: you bring it. It was too late. No, that's not forwarding.
- 5:26Speaker 2: You got ballt there you there you go, Come on,
- 5:29Speaker 2: come on, there you go, there you go.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Where's our hand sanitizer?
- 5:33Speaker 2: No, it's too late. Wasn't no hand sanitizer the nineties.
- 5:36Speaker 2: That's why our immune system is so good. These new
- 5:38Speaker 2: kids is salt. They need sanitizer for everything. Whatever happened
- 5:43Speaker 2: to eating a little flu covid? You're right, Covid.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Told us a lot about germs. Guys, we got the
- 5:50Speaker 1: bread ball.
- 5:51Speaker 2: There you go, yeah, yeah, mm hmm.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I wonder if anyone's ever put like cinnamon and sugar
- 5:58Speaker 1: in the bread ball.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't think. No. I just enjoy
- 6:02Speaker 2: the raw. But make sure you drink your water because
- 6:04Speaker 2: if not, it's going the gray ball gonna stay right there,
- 6:06Speaker 2: ain't going nowhere.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Did you come from a two parent household?
- 6:09Speaker 2: Yeah? I came from to a parent household. That's simply
- 6:13Speaker 2: put you to private school. I had really good parents,
- 6:18Speaker 2: and Claren's parents had a real good marriage. It was
- 6:22Speaker 2: the two parent household but we had our issue.
- 6:24Speaker 1: And they had a really good marriage too.
- 6:26Speaker 2: No, they did not. They had a very interesting relationship.
- 6:29Speaker 1: They still married.
- 6:31Speaker 2: No they are not.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Oh look she is piping over here, guys.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, okay, boom.
- 6:37Speaker 1: So your parents separated at what age.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I was grown? So my dad was around when I
- 6:45Speaker 2: was really small, and then something happened and they got
- 6:49Speaker 2: into something, and then he left and he came back,
- 6:52Speaker 2: probably when I was around ten something like that. He
- 6:56Speaker 2: was back for maybe a few months. They got married.
- 6:58Speaker 2: They got married right back, and then they stayed married
- 7:02Speaker 2: until I was probably like twenty something. I don't remember
- 7:05Speaker 2: the exact days. But then they stayed married. And but
- 7:07Speaker 2: it wasn't they shouldn't have been together.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah, so they was fighting from day one, from day one. Okay,
- 7:12Speaker 1: so they had a couple of kids after they got
- 7:14Speaker 1: back together.
- 7:14Speaker 2: No, we was all there already. Ooh yeah.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Oh so he left and really came back.
- 7:19Speaker 2: He left and came back. Okay, yeah, yeah, he left
- 7:21Speaker 2: and came back. They I don't know what happened, but
- 7:23Speaker 2: they got it.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Was you didn't ask.
- 7:26Speaker 2: No, I didn't care, Not that I didn't care, but
- 7:28Speaker 2: at that time, especially too, it was like staying in
- 7:30Speaker 2: a child's place. Back then, as an adult, kids weren't
- 7:34Speaker 2: allowed to ask questions, and.
- 7:35Speaker 1: Ask questions later that just it wasn't really really chang.
- 7:41Speaker 2: It just wasn't. I'm somebody who was grateful for a lot.
- 7:43Speaker 2: I was just grateful for the time, grateful for this.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I wasn't thinking like, why did you eat what we
- 7:49Speaker 2: wasn't good? I didn't think like that.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's like, so you were happy to have them back, happy.
- 7:53Speaker 2: To have them back, happy to have my mom, happy
- 7:55Speaker 2: to see them together in the whatever capacity that was.
- 7:58Speaker 2: And then when they broke up, I was happy that
- 7:59Speaker 2: they did that because I understood that it didn't make
- 8:02Speaker 2: sense to be together. I was watching it. You ever
- 8:04Speaker 2: had parents that argue a lot.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I'm a mixed bread I was exposed to other problems.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Okay, I was just yeah.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I don't think people really are you Jamaican? My mom's Jamaican.
- 8:12Speaker 1: It's like a one.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Sided oh yeah, yeah. You just you gotta listen and
- 8:15Speaker 2: be like okay, all right, okay, all.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Right, it's more like a silent okay.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Yeah. Well it's crazy. Was that they would argue so much.
- 8:23Speaker 2: It almost was entertainment. Like when you young you just
- 8:27Speaker 2: get I mean, you're looking forward to Oh, it's about
- 8:29Speaker 2: to be some drama and it would be about anything.
- 8:32Speaker 2: That's how you That's how I knew that was supposed
- 8:33Speaker 2: really like they would argue over things, that's what.
- 8:35Speaker 1: You like, over how much butter to put on this
- 8:38Speaker 1: hot toast.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Now I'm gonna tell you. Now, I'm gonna show y'all
- 8:41Speaker 2: this is real. Back back to the basics. So first off,
- 8:45Speaker 2: she handed me a butter knife to spread the butter
- 8:48Speaker 2: on the toast. First mistake. This is how you gotta
- 8:52Speaker 2: do this.
- 8:52Speaker 1: You gotta take it's already melted by the way.
- 8:55Speaker 2: You gotta take this just like this, okay, or it
- 8:57Speaker 2: ain't right.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Okay.
- 8:58Speaker 2: The butter knife makes it not official. You take the
- 9:01Speaker 2: bread and you take the butter, and you spread it
- 9:04Speaker 2: just like that. That's how you gotta do it. You
- 9:07Speaker 2: see that. You see what you oh man? Then you
- 9:12Speaker 2: take the butter night and you clean up your mess
- 9:15Speaker 2: and you put that over there because they fanted.
- 9:18Speaker 1: They brought melted butter.
- 9:21Speaker 2: All right, let me tell you something. They go all
- 9:23Speaker 2: out at eating with broke. But this is going back
- 9:26Speaker 2: to when you was broke, so you couldn't melt the butter.
- 9:29Speaker 2: You have to just let the butter sit out and
- 9:31Speaker 2: hope it melted and put it in the sun or something.
- 9:33Speaker 2: So then boom, that's how we did it. Like that.
- 9:35Speaker 2: You spread the butter on it just like that. It
- 9:37Speaker 2: looks like exactly exactly. Boom.
- 9:42Speaker 1: All right, cool, Now we got the butter.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Boom. You see how butter that is.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Boom, a lot of butter.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Now you take your sugar, right yep, Okay, I'm gonna
- 9:52Speaker 2: do it. I'm gonna do it this way. Boom. You
- 9:55Speaker 2: gonna take the sugar.
- 9:57Speaker 1: It was the last time you had this, man at
- 10:00Speaker 1: least twenty something years. Boom, you're about to go down
- 10:03Speaker 1: and reminiscent plan Boom.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Then you take the sugar. That's a lot of sugar,
- 10:08Speaker 2: it is. And you know what's crazy is usually you
- 10:10Speaker 2: will put the cinnamon first. Oh, you will put the
- 10:13Speaker 2: cinnamon before the sugar because the cinnamon holds the sugar.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Everybody know that. Oh nope, okay, boom. Then you take
- 10:21Speaker 2: the cinnamon.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, that's a lot of cinnamon. Oh my goodness.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Boom. Now, back in the day, because this is your toast,
- 10:32Speaker 2: you would have took your finger and spread it properly.
- 10:34Speaker 2: But thank god we got some civilization now, So now
- 10:37Speaker 2: we're gonna we're gonna spread the sugar and the butter
- 10:40Speaker 2: and the cinnamon like that boom and put that on
- 10:45Speaker 2: there like that nice. Now try that and tell me
- 10:48Speaker 2: that's not taking But tell me that's not the most
- 10:52Speaker 2: beautiful delicacy in the hood you ever had.
- 10:55Speaker 1: You know, you're eating this too, right, I would.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Never eat that again in my life. But no, you
- 10:59Speaker 2: go ahead, and what are you talking about this?
- 11:03Speaker 1: I think I'm the only tester bunny rabbit around here.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I got you. I got you here.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Okay, cheers, don't give me your butter outside.
- 11:13Speaker 2: I got you. That tastes like seventh grade.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I think I'm better at this than you.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Oh yeah, how to do it?
- 11:21Speaker 1: Uh huh yeah, but this is really good. Hold on,
- 11:28Speaker 1: you cut two little sugar in mind loaded up?
- 11:32Speaker 2: Oh okay, okay, hold on, go ahead. Now, it's not
- 11:37Speaker 2: enough sugar. Too much sugar, ain't sweet enough. You know
- 11:42Speaker 2: what I'm saying there like that? Take another BikeE Now,
- 11:48Speaker 2: let me tell you about that.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Let me trying to shave up his dish.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Let me tell you about this. Right here, me and
- 11:55Speaker 2: my brothers, my cousins, because my house, our houses, everybody
- 12:00Speaker 2: would come to neighborhood. Everybody come kick them out. My brothers,
- 12:05Speaker 2: my cousin, my uncles, my young I got uncle. That's
- 12:08Speaker 2: my age. My mom is the oldest of nine children.
- 12:13Speaker 2: We'd come in my room, bring the toaster, bring the
- 12:16Speaker 2: We would literally bring the toaster in the room, bring
- 12:20Speaker 2: the toaster in the room, bring the loaf of bread,
- 12:22Speaker 2: bring the butt. And we were just sitting there watching
- 12:25Speaker 2: TV making this, eating it like this.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Was the snack.
- 12:30Speaker 2: This was what it was. But you get full because
- 12:33Speaker 2: it's bread. We're getting full off this. We this used
- 12:36Speaker 2: to be like we look forward to yo. You didn't
- 12:38Speaker 2: bring the toaster. With what you're doing, Go get the toaster.
- 12:41Speaker 2: You mean nothing to be going back and forth to
- 12:42Speaker 2: the kitchen. Were playing video games. We're watching Jerry Springer,
- 12:47Speaker 2: Jenny Jones, Martin the Box remember the Box, right music?
- 12:52Speaker 2: But and we was eating this. That's how we was
- 12:54Speaker 2: getting down.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Take me back, now, So you come from this parent household,
- 13:01Speaker 1: where does you start to look towards the comedy direction?
- 13:05Speaker 2: At what age I started comedy when I was I
- 13:12Speaker 2: don't know what I know what age I started going
- 13:14Speaker 2: into comedy clubs. I was like twenty when I started comedy.
- 13:17Speaker 2: I started in my church. So what happened?
- 13:19Speaker 1: While you need some water that dry ass toast.
- 13:25Speaker 2: I don't need no water, I need a whooping. I'm
- 13:27Speaker 2: gonna go back. I need to go all the way back.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I need to go clean my room or something. This
- 13:31Speaker 2: would just take me back to it. Oh wow, I
- 13:33Speaker 2: need some chores, you know what.
- 13:34Speaker 1: I'm Oh wow, it's nostalgic.
- 13:37Speaker 2: It's nostalgic, and you ain't got what the TV put
- 13:39Speaker 2: your springer on. Let me call it. I'm gonna go
- 13:43Speaker 2: home and pie in a bit. So I used to
- 13:47Speaker 2: imitate my pastor. I come from. My pastors were animated,
- 13:51Speaker 2: So I used to be at the house and I
- 13:52Speaker 2: would just imitate him to my mom and my sister's joking.
- 13:54Speaker 2: At this point, my brother had already left for college,
- 13:57Speaker 2: but I would just be imitating him, just joking around
- 14:00Speaker 2: and my sister my mom would laugh, and that was
- 14:02Speaker 2: enough for me. And then my mom at the time,
- 14:04Speaker 2: she was over the church anniversary. She would put the
- 14:06Speaker 2: programs together for the anniversaries. She said, I'm gonna have
- 14:09Speaker 2: you do that at the church. I'm not doing that
- 14:11Speaker 2: at the church, you know what I mean. No, And
- 14:14Speaker 2: then so at the anniversary, she put me. I didn't
- 14:18Speaker 2: know she put me on on the program. So then
- 14:21Speaker 2: she say, whoever, I don't remember who was am seeing
- 14:23Speaker 2: the event that night, but they she say like this,
- 14:26Speaker 2: they say, and next up we got brother Lance. That's
- 14:30Speaker 2: how it because I wasn't I wasn't like, I wasn't
- 14:32Speaker 2: talking to you if I wasn't like the life of
- 14:35Speaker 2: the party. I was really like quiet, real quiet, you
- 14:38Speaker 2: know what I mean. So when they read they was
- 14:40Speaker 2: everybody was like because they didn't even say what I
- 14:43Speaker 2: was doing. It was just that I was coming to
- 14:44Speaker 2: the stage. So I go up and all I remember
- 14:47Speaker 2: is the first thing I said was you'all know how
- 14:50Speaker 2: pastor be on Sunday? And then I just went into it.
- 14:53Speaker 2: And when I tell you, everybody in the church was
- 14:57Speaker 2: like hollering, like my pastor was like on the floor
- 15:00Speaker 2: with real tears coming out of like it was real tears,
- 15:03Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Somebody jumped up, running and
- 15:07Speaker 2: rant like it was a fire, Like it was insane.
- 15:10Speaker 2: And that was the first time I had ever done
- 15:12Speaker 2: anything like that on a stage. I wasn't thinking I
- 15:14Speaker 2: was going to be a comedian at the time. Yeah,
- 15:16Speaker 2: I just thought that was fun.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Now was that? Did that then? Lights some kind of
- 15:22Speaker 1: spark an you right there?
- 15:23Speaker 2: It did, But I didn't know how to go from
- 15:27Speaker 2: that to a comedian.
- 15:29Speaker 1: What did your mom say after that performance?
- 15:32Speaker 2: She was like, oh my god, that was so funny.
- 15:34Speaker 2: She was like you was like, there's some wrong with
- 15:36Speaker 2: you boy. She was just kind of like that. But
- 15:39Speaker 2: I started comedy before Instagram. There was no Instagram. I
- 15:43Speaker 2: don't remember if I think YouTube was out, but it
- 15:47Speaker 2: wasn't like it is now.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:49Speaker 2: My point of saying, this is the only and I
- 15:53Speaker 2: didn't grow up in LA or New York. I grew
- 15:56Speaker 2: up in Sacramento, So you didn't you only see comedians
- 16:01Speaker 2: on TV. Like I think it's somebody's like they want
- 16:03Speaker 2: to start comedy now, they'll go on Instagram and they
- 16:05Speaker 2: got all of these examples of comedians or people who
- 16:09Speaker 2: are doing humorous things. But like, oh, I can do that,
- 16:12Speaker 2: But that's not how it was. This was when I
- 16:16Speaker 2: did that at the church. That was probably two thousand
- 16:20Speaker 2: and six, maybe or something like that, two thousand and five.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I started comedy in ten, twenty eleven, when I first
- 16:31Speaker 2: started getting on stage, you know what I mean. So
- 16:33Speaker 2: this was eight years earlier or something like that, six
- 16:38Speaker 2: years or something like that. Yeah, I didn't know. I
- 16:40Speaker 2: just knew that was real cool.
- 16:42Speaker 1: And did you start gravitating towards watching comedy tapes?
- 16:45Speaker 2: Though? I always did I start. I think I probably
- 16:49Speaker 2: started watching more, but I always grew up watching comedy.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Okay, So take me to the first time where you
- 16:55Speaker 1: start to pursue comedy.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Okay. So it goes back to the church. If so
- 17:01Speaker 2: much of my story is rooted in the church, That's
- 17:03Speaker 2: something I'm real grateful for. Because my church, my pastor
- 17:07Speaker 2: would try to nurture gifts. If he's seeing you had
- 17:11Speaker 2: a gift, he would try to create things or nurture
- 17:14Speaker 2: it to to help get you to where you can
- 17:19Speaker 2: get to. Oh, I do the thing at the church.
- 17:23Speaker 2: So now going forward, every time there was an event
- 17:26Speaker 2: at the church, they would just ask me to do something.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Can you just host it? Like something?
- 17:31Speaker 1: Just so you went from the kid that they were
- 17:33Speaker 1: like super quiet, So now this is the kid they
- 17:35Speaker 1: want to mc.
- 17:37Speaker 2: That's worse than this. So I used to do the
- 17:40Speaker 2: sound at the church. Wow, Like I used to because
- 17:42Speaker 2: I always knew this was always knew I was supposed
- 17:45Speaker 2: to be a star. I always knew I was supposed
- 17:47Speaker 2: to be someone impactful, but I ran from it. I
- 17:52Speaker 2: used to always try to be behind the scenes. So
- 17:54Speaker 2: instead of doing I would say, I do the sound,
- 17:57Speaker 2: I do the I'll do the I would hold the camera,
- 17:59Speaker 2: but I got real bad vision. I got contacts in.
- 18:03Speaker 2: But if I took my contacts out, yeah.
- 18:05Speaker 1: I'll be holding up three fingers that you say you
- 18:07Speaker 1: ain't see nothing.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yeah, if I was, you'd be my color. If I
- 18:10Speaker 2: took my contacts out, it's bad. But I never wore glasses.
- 18:15Speaker 2: I just used to thug it out. I didn't wear
- 18:16Speaker 2: contacts back then either. I just used to just walk
- 18:18Speaker 2: around blind. So I used to be doing the sound
- 18:21Speaker 2: at the church, but I couldn't really see. So the
- 18:23Speaker 2: pastor would be like telling me to turn stuff up,
- 18:26Speaker 2: and I'm just looking and he's like, yeah, I'm like
- 18:28Speaker 2: thumbs out. I am doing a good job. It was bad.
- 18:30Speaker 2: I hold I did somebody's wedding and I was holding
- 18:33Speaker 2: the camera, but I was all over the place because
- 18:35Speaker 2: it was bad. I was just trying to do all
- 18:37Speaker 2: these things, just running from my gift right back to
- 18:40Speaker 2: the church. So he would do these things like host
- 18:43Speaker 2: this event. We're doing this, can you host it? So
- 18:45Speaker 2: then he created this first Friday's event. It was like
- 18:48Speaker 2: a talent show, like people come through and I was
- 18:51Speaker 2: hosting that and that was another time where I just
- 18:54Speaker 2: got to just be on It was just me really
- 18:57Speaker 2: being on stage in front of people, figuring that out,
- 18:59Speaker 2: getting comfortable with that. So now fast forward, we're going
- 19:02Speaker 2: into New Year's Eve, going into the year twenty ten.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Now a lot of churches have services on New Year's
- 19:12Speaker 2: Eve to go and you don't got to be out
- 19:13Speaker 2: there in the streets for New Years. You can come
- 19:15Speaker 2: bring the new year in with the law. Yes, when
- 19:18Speaker 2: I get your years started in the House of the
- 19:21Speaker 2: Lord like that right. So then my pastor's son, Ishmael
- 19:25Speaker 2: called me. He said, hey, can you do some comedy
- 19:27Speaker 2: at the New Year's event?
- 19:29Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, how did it go?
- 19:33Speaker 2: It went great. But this was my first time ever
- 19:35Speaker 2: writing jokes. Everything I did before that was me making
- 19:40Speaker 2: fun of people at the church, are imitating people that
- 19:42Speaker 2: This was the first time I wrote jokes that had
- 19:45Speaker 2: nothing to do.
- 19:45Speaker 1: With the church, and it had to be PG too.
- 19:48Speaker 2: For sure. Yeah. Yeah, but my church wasn't PG. Never mind,
- 19:51Speaker 2: that's another story. Listen, we're not gonna talk about that
- 19:55Speaker 2: right now.
- 19:56Speaker 1: So you wrote these jokes and that they landed.
- 19:58Speaker 2: They landed very well. These jokes. I don't do them now,
- 20:01Speaker 2: but I could if I think back to the jokes.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I was always good writing, always understood jokes. I understood
- 20:08Speaker 2: what a punch sign was supposed to be. I understood.
- 20:12Speaker 2: I just I had a good understanding of jokes. That
- 20:15Speaker 2: was the first time I wrote jokes that was just
- 20:17Speaker 2: like this, I'm not gonna I don't want to. I
- 20:19Speaker 2: don't want to tell jokes about sister, her or brother.
- 20:22Speaker 2: I just want to write jokes. So that was that.
- 20:25Speaker 2: That went, well, that's November going, and how.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Old are you at that time?
- 20:30Speaker 2: Twenty twenty two, twenty three, okay, okay, twenty two. Yeah,
- 20:38Speaker 2: so then that's going into the new year. Now, this
- 20:42Speaker 2: was this is crazy. My church is directly across the
- 20:46Speaker 2: street from a comedy club.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Oh, the signs are lining up for you very directly, like.
- 20:54Speaker 2: This, What is up with this?
- 20:56Speaker 1: Mic is not feeling you today? I don't know what
- 20:58Speaker 1: is up with it?
- 20:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it happens But the same way with this is
- 21:02Speaker 2: how close to like walk across the street and you're
- 21:05Speaker 2: at the comedy club. But I never knew that because
- 21:07Speaker 2: I never knew what a comedy club was.
- 21:10Speaker 1: So at some point you acknowledge this comedy club.
- 21:13Speaker 2: I acknowledged the comedy club.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Is this the first club you actually go into as ever?
- 21:17Speaker 1: Stand up?
- 21:18Speaker 2: Ever?
- 21:19Speaker 1: And then how did you do over there? You want
- 21:21Speaker 1: the full story, I want the story where you bombed.
- 21:25Speaker 2: That story didn't happen for a while. Wow. Yeah, the
- 21:28Speaker 2: bomb story happened for sure, but it didn't happen at
- 21:31Speaker 2: that point.
- 21:32Speaker 1: Now, so you do you start doing comedy in this club?
- 21:34Speaker 1: Do you stay at this club for a long time
- 21:36Speaker 1: before you sit in?
- 21:37Speaker 2: You know this the Sacramento punchline. So I go there
- 21:41Speaker 2: because they have a showcase once a month, So June second,
- 21:46Speaker 2: I go the week the month before May May fifth,
- 21:51Speaker 2: It was the first Wednesday of every month. It was
- 21:53Speaker 2: May fifth, but it was single to mile, so they
- 21:55Speaker 2: moved it to May twelfth, which is my brother and
- 21:57Speaker 2: my uncle's birthday. These dates are all significant to me.
- 22:00Speaker 2: That's my first time I ever went to go watch
- 22:02Speaker 2: live comedy. So I go to the punchline and I
- 22:05Speaker 2: go watch live comedy for the first time. I sit,
- 22:07Speaker 2: I'm right in the middle, second row, and I'm just watching,
- 22:11Speaker 2: and I'm like in awe, like watching everybody was amazing.
- 22:14Speaker 2: I couldn't believe, like how they was able to do this.
- 22:17Speaker 2: I know all these guys now and some of them
- 22:19Speaker 2: weren't amazing, but to me at the time at the time.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yeah, this is incredible, you.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Know what I mean. So I said, I'm gonna come
- 22:28Speaker 2: back and do it next month. So now next month.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Now we're at June second. So I pull up, I
- 22:35Speaker 2: knock on the door. Doors open at seventh, show started
- 22:39Speaker 2: and I get there six fifth, I knock on the door. Hey,
- 22:41Speaker 2: I'm here. I'm here for the comedy show. She was like, okay,
- 22:44Speaker 2: come back in ten minutes when we open. I said, okay,
- 22:46Speaker 2: I'm wanting the comedian. And she said, okay, come back
- 22:49Speaker 2: in ten minutes. Won't be open. I said, okay, cool,
- 22:51Speaker 2: I come back at seven o'clock. I'm here and she's okay.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Let me. There's the manager and I say, hey, how
- 22:57Speaker 2: you doing man, I'm here for the show tonight and
- 22:59Speaker 2: he said at who are you? I said, ma'am I'm
- 23:02Speaker 2: Lames Woods, and he was like, I don't know you,
- 23:06Speaker 2: and I said, okay, well, how do I sign up
- 23:08Speaker 2: for the show? He said, there ain't no sign up
- 23:10Speaker 2: for the show. If I don't know you, I don't
- 23:11Speaker 2: You're not That's not how it works. So then I
- 23:14Speaker 2: was like, oh okay, and then I just left. So
- 23:18Speaker 2: I went back to my car. But then I'm like,
- 23:21Speaker 2: I can't leave. I told all these people I was
- 23:24Speaker 2: going to be at the show tonight and.
- 23:26Speaker 1: You was advertising the show that you weren't even on first.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I didn't know no better. I just I go on
- 23:31Speaker 2: the website. They said it's a show, you got a showcase.
- 23:33Speaker 2: I'm Okaylyn, what do you do?
- 23:35Speaker 1: You go back?
- 23:36Speaker 2: I go back because this is once again before instead before,
- 23:39Speaker 2: like Facebook is a thing. But I've told everybody, yeah,
- 23:43Speaker 2: listen to me, like yo, this is what we're doing
- 23:46Speaker 2: this tonight. So I'm I can't leave. I don't got
- 23:50Speaker 2: everybody's number. So I go back and I'm talking to
- 23:53Speaker 2: him like, hey man, I talked I'm be on the show.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Then I just need five minutes. And he was just
- 23:57Speaker 2: like he would say real mean things walk away. You'd
- 24:00Speaker 2: be like everybody say they funny to their bomb and
- 24:03Speaker 2: then what then he walk away. I'm just standing there.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Damn what happens after the bomb? You know what I mean? Yeah,
- 24:08Speaker 2: I'm processing all of this. So then twenty minutes go
- 24:11Speaker 2: by thirty Now it was seven thirty, and I'm like,
- 24:13Speaker 2: hey man, I just need five minutes of your time, bro.
- 24:15Speaker 2: So we're standing by the bar. Now, this is what
- 24:18Speaker 2: the entrance is. So he would come by the bar
- 24:20Speaker 2: say something, walk away. So now let's say it's seven forty.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Show start at eight o'clock, seven thirty five. People keep
- 24:26Speaker 2: coming into the show saying, A Lance can't wait to
- 24:29Speaker 2: see you, and hey, do your think the night? Bro?
- 24:31Speaker 2: A Lance? Hey do? Hey Bro, I'm proud of and
- 24:34Speaker 2: he's this was a lesson I learned early about selling tickets. Yeah,
- 24:39Speaker 2: I didn't know nothing about no guest, less than nothing.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Everybody who can to send me bought a ticket. So
- 24:43Speaker 2: by the time it's seven point fifty five, the club
- 24:47Speaker 2: is packed and it's probably sixty people that came to
- 24:51Speaker 2: see me, which is sixty people. Sixty people. Yeah, oh yeah,
- 24:54Speaker 2: it's a lot for you. He had. I didn't know
- 24:57Speaker 2: no better, you know what I mean? This is my
- 24:58Speaker 2: first introduction into show business. I didn't know. I had
- 25:02Speaker 2: just sold a bunch of tickets and people came to
- 25:04Speaker 2: see me, and your hands are tied at this point.
- 25:07Speaker 2: So then at seven fifty five he said, okay, you
- 25:11Speaker 2: got five minutes. You're going up first. Jesus, I said, okay,
- 25:14Speaker 2: I didn't even know I was supposed to be nervous
- 25:16Speaker 2: to go first. Yeah, you know what I mean. I
- 25:18Speaker 2: was so like angry because I had a bad temper.
- 25:21Speaker 2: It's better now, but especially at that time, I was
- 25:23Speaker 2: real like short. So I'm angry because how you talking
- 25:26Speaker 2: to me? You know what I mean? And I didn't
- 25:28Speaker 2: tell nobody who came to see me what was going on,
- 25:31Speaker 2: because then it would have been a group problem. Yeah,
- 25:34Speaker 2: I mean, so I'm trying to just be chill. And
- 25:36Speaker 2: so then he come back to me eight o'clock he said, okay,
- 25:39Speaker 2: you're going up third first, he said the first thing.
- 25:41Speaker 2: He said, you're going third. So then there's a host,
- 25:43Speaker 2: two comics, and then me the comic that goes on
- 25:47Speaker 2: before me. He was probably on stage for seven minutes.
- 25:51Speaker 2: I don't think anybody smiled, not a smile. Yeah, And
- 25:56Speaker 2: that made me more angry because it's do better, and
- 26:01Speaker 2: I gotta fight for five minutes and he just get
- 26:03Speaker 2: to go on with No, he ain't put on no fight,
- 26:05Speaker 2: and you let this have it. So I go on stage.
- 26:07Speaker 2: It went really well. It went really well my first time,
- 26:10Speaker 2: but like it was, the jokes I were telling were funny.
- 26:14Speaker 2: I wasn't a great performance my first time at a
- 26:16Speaker 2: comedy club, but I still remember the jokes I told.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I remember like they were quality jokes for my first time.
- 26:23Speaker 2: And then from then do you just start to meet
- 26:25Speaker 2: the comics and go places and figure out stuff and oh,
- 26:29Speaker 2: this guy has a room over here, and this guy
- 26:31Speaker 2: has a room over here. Now if you want to
- 26:32Speaker 2: hear the bomb, go ahead.
- 26:33Speaker 1: No, I don't want to hear the bomb. So you
- 26:35Speaker 1: so after that club, you do well? Do you start
- 26:38Speaker 1: to now understand the process of going after a certain
- 26:41Speaker 1: title in the club and pitching yourself.
- 26:44Speaker 2: No, I still don't see this is what I thought.
- 26:47Speaker 2: I thought it went well, and I was like, so,
- 26:50Speaker 2: am I supposed to wait for HBO to call? Or
- 26:52Speaker 2: do I need to send them the tape from tonight
- 26:54Speaker 2: because clearly they need to know who I am. Did
- 26:57Speaker 2: y'all see what I just did? Yeah, that's how I'm thinking.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I didn't know how none of this stuff works. Yeah,
- 27:01Speaker 2: so I'm like, oh not Yeah, Chris Rocket is funny,
- 27:05Speaker 2: but I was funny too, So clearly we should be
- 27:07Speaker 2: working together. That's how they're supposed to work. What are
- 27:10Speaker 2: we talking about? So I was just I didn't know.
- 27:14Speaker 2: I didn't know, Like I ain't know. I was at
- 27:16Speaker 2: that point, I'm real like just inquisitive, like I'm trying
- 27:19Speaker 2: to figure out what am I supposed to be doing
- 27:20Speaker 2: because I don't know nothing?
- 27:21Speaker 1: So who are you going to find out? What's your
- 27:23Speaker 1: next play?
- 27:24Speaker 2: The comics I met that night. I remember one comics
- 27:27Speaker 2: is friend of mine still, his name is Miles Weber.
- 27:29Speaker 2: I was like, yo, how do you make money doing this?
- 27:32Speaker 2: And he was like, hell if I know?
- 27:34Speaker 1: Like that was like, how long do you think? How
- 27:38Speaker 1: long was your struggle for at least not making money?
- 27:41Speaker 2: Not making money? My first time on stage that was
- 27:46Speaker 2: June second. The next year, November second was my last
- 27:53Speaker 2: day work on a day job.
- 27:55Speaker 1: Oh so within a year you were able to fully
- 27:57Speaker 1: support yourself off comedy.
- 27:59Speaker 2: I was able to figure it out. I wouldn't say fully, no, yeah, yes,
- 28:04Speaker 2: fully supported myself. I had to change some things. I
- 28:06Speaker 2: had to learn how to manage my money different. Yeah,
- 28:08Speaker 2: I had to learn what not to do. Okay, maybe
- 28:12Speaker 2: I don't need that. Do I really need cable? I
- 28:14Speaker 2: don't think.
- 28:14Speaker 1: So I really started living on a budget.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Started living on a budget, you know what I mean,
- 28:19Speaker 2: start dating lesser women. But you just have to change it.
- 28:23Speaker 2: You gotta change some things up. I mean, look, so
- 28:25Speaker 2: you're not in a budget.
- 28:26Speaker 1: That's hilarious. Did you start dating women that had more
- 28:29Speaker 1: money too?
- 28:30Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 28:31Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 28:32Speaker 1: Did you really?
- 28:33Speaker 2: Absolutely?
- 28:34Speaker 1: Okay?
- 28:35Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 28:35Speaker 1: Did that help you at some point in your journey?
- 28:38Speaker 2: Yeah, but not like that. It was what really helped
- 28:41Speaker 2: was I learned how much stuff I don't need. Yeah,
- 28:45Speaker 2: Like I just learned. Like what I realized is the
- 28:48Speaker 2: thing that we get caught up in is we when
- 28:51Speaker 2: we make money, everything we call everything we get cost
- 28:56Speaker 2: like constant money. So it's like I haven't had a
- 28:59Speaker 2: card since my first car. I've never had another car.
- 29:04Speaker 1: Really no, I'm like very highly, I'm a car no queen. Yeah,
- 29:09Speaker 1: and every time I'm about to tire, I'm like, nope,
- 29:11Speaker 1: put me in.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Yeah another one. Yeah, But that's how the cycle work.
- 29:16Speaker 2: So I'm like people pay bills on iPhones like they
- 29:20Speaker 2: want the new phone. So then they add yeah, yeah,
- 29:22Speaker 2: and it's know. If I'm going to get the new phone,
- 29:24Speaker 2: just go buy it. If I can't afford it, then
- 29:26Speaker 2: I don't have it.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Smart you live within your means, which is a good,
- 29:30Speaker 1: very good thing. I can't imagine Sacramento and correct me
- 29:33Speaker 1: if I'm wrong. You get to go up that many
- 29:36Speaker 1: nights or the times in one night?
- 29:39Speaker 2: Why not? All right, So I'll tell you this story.
- 29:41Speaker 2: I'm trying to find comedy clubs and things now at
- 29:44Speaker 2: this point in my head, you can never tell the
- 29:46Speaker 2: same joke twice. This is what I believe. So I thought,
- 29:49Speaker 2: once you told that joke, you got to tell new jokes.
- 29:52Speaker 2: So every time.
- 29:53Speaker 1: I'm running at a different speed.
- 29:55Speaker 2: I didn't know. And at that point I was just
- 29:57Speaker 2: so excited. Everything I thought was fun I wrote everything
- 30:01Speaker 2: I thought was funny. If I just wrote it all down,
- 30:04Speaker 2: I'm just gonna try it on stage.
- 30:06Speaker 1: But how many clubs are you averaging a night in Sacramento?
- 30:09Speaker 2: So that that's what I was gonna tell you, But
- 30:11Speaker 2: I'll speed through it. When I was really getting good,
- 30:14Speaker 2: I was on stage at a minimum twelve times.
- 30:17Speaker 1: A week, twelve times a week. Yeah, in Sacramento they
- 30:21Speaker 1: have that many clubs you can get up that. How
- 30:23Speaker 1: what's the distance between the clubs though, all within already
- 30:29Speaker 1: thirty miles that's pretty so like almost thirty minutes apart
- 30:33Speaker 1: or within. Yeah, so what because I'm saying this because
- 30:36Speaker 1: if you're a comic in New York, you can get
- 30:38Speaker 1: reps up that right, most of your comedy. The more
- 30:41Speaker 1: reps you do, the better you get, right, even though
- 30:44Speaker 1: you're writing new material on the regular. Clearly, I'm just
- 30:47Speaker 1: trying to figure out for you to at least maintain
- 30:50Speaker 1: yourself how much repping you're doing to get to the
- 30:54Speaker 1: point where you're semi sustainable within a year.
- 30:56Speaker 2: So that's what it was. It was. There was three
- 31:01Speaker 2: comedy clubs, like Major Club. You had the Punchline, You
- 31:04Speaker 2: had Tommy T's, and then you had Laps Unlimited. Tommy
- 31:07Speaker 2: T's has since shut the one that Sacramento has, but
- 31:10Speaker 2: Punchline and Laps Unlimited are still there. So those were
- 31:13Speaker 2: the three clubs. Then you had there's a spot called
- 31:16Speaker 2: the Touch of Class, like a black Spy. It's like
- 31:19Speaker 2: it's like a nationally known amongst comics. This was like
- 31:22Speaker 2: a spywork. Every black comic had came through at some point.
- 31:26Speaker 2: And I don't know if you ever seen Kevin Hart
- 31:28Speaker 2: Heart of the City. He shot at a Touch of Class.
- 31:30Speaker 2: The first episode ever was shot in Sacramento. Touch a Class.
- 31:33Speaker 2: So that was on Sundays. But then there was another
- 31:36Speaker 2: spot called on the Y, a little bar they did comedy.
- 31:39Speaker 2: You did that, so I would go to And then
- 31:41Speaker 2: there was a spot called the Comedy Spot. They did
- 31:43Speaker 2: mostly improv, but they did stand up too, so I
- 31:46Speaker 2: would go, Okay, on Sunday, I could hit the comedy spot,
- 31:49Speaker 2: I could hit on the Y, and I hit the
- 31:50Speaker 2: Touch of Class.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Got it?
- 31:52Speaker 2: So that's three on Sunday.
- 31:55Speaker 1: So how long did you work a Sacramento for a
- 31:59Speaker 1: year or did you When did you start to say
- 32:01Speaker 1: I'm going to move out of the Sacramento zone.
- 32:05Speaker 2: To start you mean to start to travel outside of
- 32:07Speaker 2: Sack to the shows.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Do you still live in Sacramento? You live in La.
- 32:11Speaker 2: I live in l A. Yeah, okay, but I just
- 32:13Speaker 2: moved to l A.
- 32:14Speaker 1: Like how long ago? Oh okay, so you're new here? Yeah, okay, okay.
- 32:20Speaker 2: But I've been coming to La so long.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it was like, what I'm trying. What I'm trying
- 32:24Speaker 1: to get a lay of the land, because got twenty
- 32:27Speaker 1: more minutes. Is I want to see, like how long
- 32:31Speaker 1: it took for you to get that consistency and what
- 32:34Speaker 1: markets did you have to work to get that consistency up?
- 32:37Speaker 2: When I the first thing, there's a guy, one of
- 32:40Speaker 2: the first not one of the first guys whoever took
- 32:43Speaker 2: me on the road, named Daniel Dugar. I bury you
- 32:47Speaker 2: and he was like, Yo, you gotta go to grow,
- 32:50Speaker 2: You got to go to grow. So then he had
- 32:53Speaker 2: gave me his number one time. And I'm not the
- 32:57Speaker 2: best at calling people. I had somebody's number and I
- 32:59Speaker 2: just want to use I'll be trying to get better
- 33:01Speaker 2: at that. So I remember I called him one day
- 33:02Speaker 2: and I was like, Yo, what should I be doing there?
- 33:04Speaker 2: How can I do this? And then he's big on
- 33:07Speaker 2: like wardrobe. He's like a real sharp he always with
- 33:09Speaker 2: his suits. He was like, man, your wardrobe is important.
- 33:13Speaker 2: He talk. So then me and him we just went shopping.
- 33:16Speaker 2: He's just like, yo, let's just go shopping, bro. Just
- 33:18Speaker 2: so I started wearing suits and all that. That wasn't
- 33:20Speaker 2: really my thing, but it was just something. But he
- 33:23Speaker 2: was like, Yo, why don't you start. You can come.
- 33:25Speaker 2: I got these shows. You can come on the road.
- 33:29Speaker 2: There's these things called triple runs that's on the West coast,
- 33:33Speaker 2: and it'll be like I'm talking about all of these
- 33:36Speaker 2: small little Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington state, and you get
- 33:42Speaker 2: in a car and just drive to all of these spots.
- 33:45Speaker 2: But just like this show might pay three hundred, this
- 33:47Speaker 2: one might pay one fifty, this one might pay five.
- 33:50Speaker 2: And then so you do that for a week and
- 33:52Speaker 2: you might come home with a thousand dollars. If you
- 33:54Speaker 2: got some merchandise, you might come home with two thousand,
- 33:57Speaker 2: fifteen hundred, whatever the case is. Right, So that I
- 34:00Speaker 2: started to do that, Okay, I would just get in
- 34:02Speaker 2: the car and just drive, okay, and just go pick
- 34:04Speaker 2: up nine hund here, three hundred here, one point fifty here,
- 34:07Speaker 2: sometimes get a room time, sleep in the car. Just really.
- 34:10Speaker 2: But I was having the most fun because I was
- 34:13Speaker 2: doing I wanted to do. So if I got a
- 34:14Speaker 2: drive thirteen dollars, I don't mind, because I'm finna go
- 34:18Speaker 2: see the most beautiful woman in the world. You know
- 34:20Speaker 2: what I mean. Comedy?
- 34:22Speaker 1: Oh okay, wait, what so you're doing all of this
- 34:30Speaker 1: and maintaining a budget. What are you doing with your
- 34:32Speaker 1: daytime though there's no hustling during the day, You're just
- 34:36Speaker 1: like living life and writing comics.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it was just I was doing regular stuff, went
- 34:40Speaker 2: to the gym playing basketball.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Where does that acting enter?
- 34:43Speaker 2: So I started acting once again. I'm at a show.
- 34:47Speaker 2: We're doing. My man Greg Vaughn had a a compedy do,
- 34:51Speaker 2: a golf tournament and a comedy show before the day before.
- 34:54Speaker 2: So we're doing the comedy show. It's me, Tony Roberts,
- 34:58Speaker 2: Chris Spencer, alex Tommy, Buddy Lewis, Flex Alexander. Yeah, that's
- 35:06Speaker 2: the show. This is in Sacramento two. So we do
- 35:09Speaker 2: that show and after the show, this guy comes to
- 35:12Speaker 2: talk to me. He says, hey, man, you're really funny.
- 35:14Speaker 2: My friend is a movie director and I just want
- 35:17Speaker 2: you to meet him. Okay, So he says to me,
- 35:19Speaker 2: he's just I just think you should meet him. I said, okay.
- 35:22Speaker 2: He said, He said, yeah, are you gonna be at
- 35:24Speaker 2: the golf tournament tomorrow. I said, yeah, I'll be there.
- 35:26Speaker 2: He said, he's gonna be there. I'll make sure that
- 35:28Speaker 2: you guys meet the golf tournament. I said, okay. Cool.
- 35:30Speaker 2: So then the next day golf tournament. This guy's name
- 35:33Speaker 2: is Nick Leasure, film director. So I meet Nick and
- 35:36Speaker 2: he was just like, yeah, Brian, here just here. You're
- 35:38Speaker 2: really funny bro, And yeah, bro, we should just let's
- 35:40Speaker 2: figure out we can work together. I want to see
- 35:42Speaker 2: you perform. When do you perform it. I just happen
- 35:44Speaker 2: to have a show that night at the Tommy t
- 35:47Speaker 2: that is no longer open. I was like, I'll be
- 35:49Speaker 2: at Tommy T's tonight. He was like, I'm coming through.
- 35:52Speaker 2: So he come to Tommy T's. He's bro. That was great, bro.
- 35:55Speaker 2: I just yeah, we gotta figure something out. The next
- 35:58Speaker 2: within the week he called. He sent me like a
- 36:00Speaker 2: script and he was like, I want you to read
- 36:03Speaker 2: for this part right here, or read this part and
- 36:06Speaker 2: then just send me like a video of you.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:08Speaker 2: So then I'm like all right, cool. So then I
- 36:11Speaker 2: send it to him and then he's yeah, come out.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I want you to come out of the office. Come out.
- 36:15Speaker 2: Office is yeah, bro, we start filming. We start filming
- 36:17Speaker 2: in two muths or in a mother or somebody else.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Before he gave you the role, did you ever entertain
- 36:22Speaker 1: the idea of acting for sure.
- 36:24Speaker 2: I never entertained the idea, but I've never done any
- 36:28Speaker 2: of the steps that would show that.
- 36:31Speaker 1: And you didn't go to acting school.
- 36:32Speaker 2: I did none of those things. I did none of
- 36:34Speaker 2: those things. But it was like, that's how it came
- 36:37Speaker 2: to me. And this was like this movie was like Starr, Mario,
- 36:40Speaker 2: ven People's and Glenn Plumbers and it was like, I'm
- 36:43Speaker 2: with seasoned actors.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Now did you like the whole experience?
- 36:46Speaker 2: Absolutely? Acting. Acting is a it's a different sport. It's
- 36:50Speaker 2: like a totally different sport. But I love acting because
- 36:54Speaker 2: you get to be someone that's not yourself, you know
- 36:57Speaker 2: what I mean. You get to disappear into something else.
- 37:00Speaker 2: It's a different it's a different muscle, Like you challenge
- 37:02Speaker 2: yourself differently, you know what I mean. You read the
- 37:04Speaker 2: part and you got to say, Okay, what would the
- 37:06Speaker 2: character do? Not? What would I do? What would I
- 37:08Speaker 2: how would he say this? Yeah? Yeah, you know what
- 37:10Speaker 2: I mean.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Now, now that you've experienced both sports, which one do
- 37:16Speaker 1: you like more?
- 37:17Speaker 2: Still?
- 37:17Speaker 1: Comedy?
- 37:18Speaker 2: Comedy? Yeah, I got you got more control over the comedy.
- 37:21Speaker 2: This is I love acting, though I'm getting more into
- 37:23Speaker 2: the acting space now because I'm first off I'm a
- 37:27Speaker 2: comic first, I'm a comedian.
- 37:28Speaker 1: So everything you're very funny, by the way, extremely funny.
- 37:31Speaker 2: I appreciate you, thank you. But everything I do to
- 37:35Speaker 2: bring you to my comedy, you know what I mean?
- 37:38Speaker 2: So I can go do one hundred movies. My goal,
- 37:42Speaker 2: one of my main goals is for you to now
- 37:44Speaker 2: come see me do comedy. Right. So it's like Denzel
- 37:49Speaker 2: just said, he just said, a theater is an actors medium.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Film is a director's medium. The stage is a comedians medium.
- 38:02Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. So no matter what I
- 38:04Speaker 2: do in front of the camera, they might take it
- 38:07Speaker 2: and edit it different and that's not what I did.
- 38:10Speaker 2: But that's what they're supposed to do. This is their thing.
- 38:13Speaker 2: But the stage is my thing. This is how This
- 38:16Speaker 2: is the purest of my thoughts and how I can
- 38:19Speaker 2: break it down. This is without the edit, without the cut.
- 38:23Speaker 2: This is how I feel. I said it, you know
- 38:25Speaker 2: what I mean. So, yeah, comedy, comedy always be first.
- 38:30Speaker 2: You never say always, but I feel comfortable saying what.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Would you say is the downside of being in this industry?
- 38:35Speaker 1: You've been in it for over twenty years, i'd imagine,
- 38:37Speaker 1: or almost twenty almost thirteen thirteen, yeah, thirteen.
- 38:43Speaker 2: Fourteen, my bad, fourteen fourteen years.
- 38:45Speaker 1: Yeah, what would you say is the downside of it?
- 38:47Speaker 1: If you could say there.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Yeah, like to say a downside, I'll say it affects
- 38:51Speaker 2: relationships for sure.
- 38:53Speaker 1: But give me like a romantic relationship all of them?
- 38:57Speaker 2: But yeah, for sure, all of them, all of them.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Why do you say all of them.
- 39:00Speaker 2: You missed so much?
- 39:01Speaker 1: Do you have children?
- 39:02Speaker 2: No, I'll be pulling out, but saying why I pulled
- 39:05Speaker 2: this out to toast. You got to you got to
- 39:06Speaker 2: get in the pot of there and.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Now, okay, he's got a strong pull out game.
- 39:12Speaker 2: You want to eat this sentiment, you got to pull
- 39:14Speaker 2: it out, you know what I mean?
- 39:16Speaker 1: Always wrap it up to guys, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:18Speaker 2: If you wrap it up. Do you really believe that?
- 39:22Speaker 1: So it'd be affecting all relationships as a family members
- 39:25Speaker 1: because you said all relationships or relationships.
- 39:27Speaker 2: Just I can't. I missed all the birthday parties. They
- 39:30Speaker 2: do it on the weekend on the road, you know
- 39:32Speaker 2: what I mean. So it's but I think even that
- 39:34Speaker 2: can change later. It is because I've been on the
- 39:37Speaker 2: road consistently now six years.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Was mastering online social media tough for you.
- 39:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think I've mastered it.
- 39:50Speaker 1: But but you're Your following is pretty good though, So
- 39:53Speaker 1: it looks like you're starting to get a hang of
- 39:55Speaker 1: the algorithms.
- 39:57Speaker 2: The following is growing up. I understand how to be
- 39:59Speaker 2: funny on the internet, which is different.
- 40:01Speaker 1: It's a different type of comedy.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Stage, which is different than being funny here. Everything is
- 40:06Speaker 2: a different kind of thing to be funny. But I
- 40:09Speaker 2: will say online, I think I need to grow my
- 40:14Speaker 2: YouTube page. I need to get some long form content. Damn.
- 40:20Speaker 2: And I got probably got like eight thousand YouTube subscribers.
- 40:24Speaker 2: That's still pretty good without ever trying. Yeah, I've never
- 40:26Speaker 2: tried to build a page.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Why do you feel it's important to build a YouTube
- 40:30Speaker 1: page though?
- 40:31Speaker 2: Because I feel like everybody in the world uses YouTube?
- 40:35Speaker 1: Do you think that?
- 40:35Speaker 2: And then from the babies to the eldest, does.
- 40:38Speaker 1: The social media play a role into how much you
- 40:39Speaker 1: get paid?
- 40:40Speaker 2: Now? Absolutely, that's it's the new television. It's like the
- 40:45Speaker 2: last star that was comedian who was like from a movie,
- 40:51Speaker 2: do you know what I mean?
- 40:51Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point. What do you think of
- 40:53Speaker 1: these like comics like Matt Rife, that's.
- 40:55Speaker 2: My friend that's my guy. I love that guy. Yeah.
- 41:00Speaker 1: It at that, then I'm not gonna say nothing past it.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Matt, MAT's hilarious.
- 41:03Speaker 1: I think you think he's funny.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Man's hilarious. This is what I believe. I believe that
- 41:10Speaker 2: the way people discover you sometimes is how they're always
- 41:15Speaker 2: gonna hold you. Matt's been doing comedy for years. Yeah.
- 41:20Speaker 2: I think Matt was starting fourteen years old. He wasn't
- 41:22Speaker 2: doing quote unquote crowd work. He was doing the setup,
- 41:26Speaker 2: primise punts, and he was doing the jokes. He got
- 41:28Speaker 2: famous from the crowd work.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Yeah. So then I heard about that.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Yeah. So then if that's how you've seen him, you're like, oh,
- 41:33Speaker 2: he's just the crowworker.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Didn't you do it? Didn't he release a special just
- 41:36Speaker 1: on CrowdWork too? At some point he did.
- 41:38Speaker 2: He's release two or three of them like that. Yeah,
- 41:40Speaker 2: he has one on Netflix that's crowd work.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I think I've seen that.
- 41:44Speaker 2: Yeah. But it's it's like the ability to create and
- 41:48Speaker 2: find your way. This is the hardest thing to do,
- 41:51Speaker 2: the hardest thing to do is sell tickets.
- 41:54Speaker 1: Yeah, how would you describe your comedy though? For people
- 41:57Speaker 1: that don't know, I've seen him, you was, Yeah, Yeah,
- 42:01Speaker 1: that's that's why I wanted on the show.
- 42:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I think my comedy is brilliant.
- 42:07Speaker 1: It for people that don't know who Lance was is.
- 42:10Speaker 1: How would you describe your type of comedy is.
- 42:12Speaker 2: It's it is high energy, intellectual warfare.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I like that.
- 42:18Speaker 2: That's how I view it. I'm trying to merge the
- 42:22Speaker 2: worlds of Tony Roberts and Dave Chappelle and find that
- 42:25Speaker 2: somewhere in the middle where you have this high energy,
- 42:30Speaker 2: can say any silly thing and also has some introspective,
- 42:35Speaker 2: thought provoking Damn, I ain't think about it like that
- 42:38Speaker 2: and try to mix all of that together. It's how
- 42:41Speaker 2: I view it. Yeah, I think I'm I think I'm
- 42:44Speaker 2: really entertaining because like I watch comedy and I can
- 42:49Speaker 2: break down. I understand comedy, so I can tell you, oh,
- 42:53Speaker 2: that's that. And there's some college that are really good
- 42:56Speaker 2: and they're boring. Yeah, and like I'll be watching myself
- 43:01Speaker 2: and I say, I just don't want to be boring.
- 43:03Speaker 1: I think that there's I think my rule with comedy
- 43:06Speaker 1: is that people I never say a comic is terrible.
- 43:11Speaker 1: I think that people laugh at what they can relate to.
- 43:15Speaker 1: I think that most people laugh at well, and there
- 43:17Speaker 1: are people that are just genuinely funny, but most people
- 43:19Speaker 1: laugh at what they can relate to. Yes, that's what
- 43:22Speaker 1: I've noticed.
- 43:23Speaker 2: Yes, and a great comic will make you laugh at
- 43:26Speaker 2: things you can't relate to it all.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Yeah, it's they can get you to laugh. But I
- 43:31Speaker 1: noticed that I tend if I look at the comics
- 43:34Speaker 1: that I'm like totally like, I'm a fan of this
- 43:36Speaker 1: particular comic, this particular comic. It's comic that's somewhat there's
- 43:41Speaker 1: some kind of familial familiar.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Cularity to get the words where I go ahead.
- 43:48Speaker 1: But but I say that to say that because I
- 43:50Speaker 1: think there are comics that are genuinely funny, but to say, okay,
- 43:54Speaker 1: that comic needs to be a staple in my like yeah,
- 43:57Speaker 1: I want to continue. Yeah, I think there's got to
- 43:59Speaker 1: be a little bit more of a relationship with the
- 44:02Speaker 1: I can relate to the Bilberd's continual anger. I make
- 44:06Speaker 1: jokes around here all the time, like yo, I totally
- 44:08Speaker 1: relate to this guy and holding it in and then
- 44:11Speaker 1: you just randomly explode. I'm like, yo, I got you stop? Yeah,
- 44:16Speaker 1: or Sebastian, I keep foret I love it, but all
- 44:21Speaker 1: the toxic like anything toxic, sign me up like on that,
- 44:25Speaker 1: like Little Drain, I'm like, yo, I message you. But
- 44:27Speaker 1: I do still can appreciate all different types of comedy.
- 44:31Speaker 1: But I think even when I talk to other people,
- 44:33Speaker 1: it's like some people may like say Matt and be
- 44:36Speaker 1: like he's amazing, and it's okay. You probably find it
- 44:39Speaker 1: more relatable then yeah.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Yeah. I think what's happened in entertainment is people like
- 44:47Speaker 2: the person more than the product, so they want to
- 44:51Speaker 2: relate to the person. Yeah, And it's once I'm locked
- 44:54Speaker 2: in with the person, whatever the product, I must support
- 44:58Speaker 2: it because I like the person. It's especially with the
- 45:01Speaker 2: social media age, it's like people are literally just falling
- 45:06Speaker 2: in love with the personality and don't even know what
- 45:08Speaker 2: you do. They don't know what you're a comedian, singer, dance.
- 45:12Speaker 2: They just know that they like you.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Yeah, or they want to be I think with social media,
- 45:16Speaker 1: I think people tend to follow people they either want
- 45:18Speaker 1: to be like or don't. I still haven't grasped the
- 45:21Speaker 1: whole social media idolization because to me, it's like a
- 45:25Speaker 1: platform where you present whatever you want to present. It's
- 45:28Speaker 1: like a mirror. It's like a weird picture show. I
- 45:33Speaker 1: don't think there's a lot of authenticity there, but that's
- 45:36Speaker 1: where comedy is great, because there's a lot of authenticity.
- 45:39Speaker 1: For any fans that or comics that are trying to
- 45:43Speaker 1: look up to you, is that you have a phone on.
- 45:46Speaker 2: It's vibrating, it's down there.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Before we close out, I would like
- 45:51Speaker 1: to see if you could give any advice to any comics,
- 45:54Speaker 1: young comics trying to be a comedian in the space
- 45:59Speaker 1: of the common business.
- 46:02Speaker 2: I think you call it. Yeah, mom, no, just take
- 46:06Speaker 2: the plan B pill. Don't worry about it. Okay, all right,
- 46:13Speaker 2: m my mom be tripping.

- 46:20Speaker 1: plan B. I think that's hilarious.
- 46:22Speaker 2: I'm sorry my mom? Is she wild?
- 46:24Speaker 1: Your mom? Is that where you got it? That's Lance

- 46:50Speaker 2: That's Instagram, YouTube, TikTok x Twitter. What what's the other
- 46:57Speaker 2: ones that TikTok TikTok?

- 47:12Speaker 2: All of that cool.
- 47:14Speaker 1: Even after we wrap, he's getting on the road too.
- 47:16Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm so happy you have me here.
- 47:19Speaker 2: I really appreciate you letting me come here and cook
- 47:21Speaker 2: this delicacy.
- 47:22Speaker 1: And I could tell it meant a lot to you.
- 47:24Speaker 1: It did. What advice would you give to someone, though, for.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Real, if I gave a comedian advice. Advice is hard
- 47:31Speaker 2: for me because it's too general. But what I will
- 47:33Speaker 2: say is, when you starting off, do the things that
- 47:37Speaker 2: you think are funny and not what you think other
- 47:40Speaker 2: people will think is funny. That's one of the main
- 47:43Speaker 2: things comic struggle with is day they try to do
- 47:46Speaker 2: what they think people will find funny. Versus what you
- 47:50Speaker 2: just find funny, because the same way you said Bill
- 47:52Speaker 2: Burr and the Anger, if you was like, people aren't
- 47:55Speaker 2: as angry as me, then you wouldn't even be able
- 47:59Speaker 2: to be yourself because that's how your people find is
- 48:02Speaker 2: by you being you. You know what I mean? If
- 48:04Speaker 2: you go try to they already got a version of that.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Just be But I also think comedy good. If you
- 48:12Speaker 2: a good comic, it'll teach you how to be yourself.
- 48:15Speaker 2: A lot of people don't know they.
- 48:16Speaker 1: I think the comics are more funny when they're one
- 48:19Speaker 1: hundred percent yeah themselves, like unexcusably is that the right word, unapologetic,
- 48:25Speaker 1: unapologetically themselves, like.
- 48:27Speaker 2: For sure, they are, for sure, But you gotta.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Even the ones you can't relate to are more funny
- 48:32Speaker 1: when you're like, oh my gosh, you can't believe this
- 48:34Speaker 1: comic thinks this way or what's funny?
- 48:36Speaker 2: Right? I give everybody comic leeway for lack of a
- 48:40Speaker 2: better time. There's comics that say things that I one
- 48:43Speaker 2: hundred percent disagree with, but as a comic, he or
- 48:47Speaker 2: she has that right to express that. My only, it's
- 48:51Speaker 2: my only. It's a small request I'd be having just
- 48:54Speaker 2: make it funny. There's a lot of stuff going on
- 48:57Speaker 2: right now where it's just just for the shock or
- 48:59Speaker 2: just its just make it funny what you talk about.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Just make it funny. Yeah, that's it.
- 49:04Speaker 1: That's it.
- 49:05Speaker 2: That's it.
- 49:06Speaker 1: Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to
- 49:08Speaker 1: come see us. I know you went through a lot
- 49:11Speaker 1: today and you didn't quite on us, So I appreciate it.
- 49:15Speaker 2: I know that if y'all got an EBT card.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I think I messed up on the bread though. I
- 49:21Speaker 1: think I did this brio bread and I was trying
- 49:23Speaker 1: to was way too fancy. Bread was fancy.
- 49:26Speaker 2: Bed was way too fancuse.
- 49:27Speaker 1: I feel like the bread messed up your dish low key.
- 49:29Speaker 1: Like I if I wasn't eating tacos before this.
- 49:31Speaker 2: It didn't mess it up.
- 49:32Speaker 1: It just it was too thick, you know what I'm saying.
- 49:35Speaker 1: I feel like the cheaper bread would have worked better.
- 49:37Speaker 1: I was trying to be fancy for you, Lance. I
- 49:39Speaker 1: was excited about you.
- 49:42Speaker 2: I appreciate it, you know what I mean. I'm excited
- 49:44Speaker 2: about being here. It was good, Yes, it was good.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Gods like I said it was. It was like two
- 49:49Speaker 2: pieces of bread back and maybe four switched together back
- 49:52Speaker 2: in the day, but it was still good and it
- 49:54Speaker 2: brought back memories. That's what it's about. Reminiscent your childhood,
- 49:58Speaker 2: where'd you come from? Forget you, what did you when
- 50:02Speaker 2: you broke? That's who you are?
- 50:03Speaker 1: And remember Lance here didn't have his parents, didn't have
- 50:06Speaker 1: a real question. He's out by Thanks for tuning in.
