Speaker 1: The Story of Doctor Dolittle by Hugh Lofting. The first
• 0:07
Speaker 1: chapter titled Puddleby Once upon a time, many years ago,
• 0:15
Speaker 1: when our grandfathers were little children, there was a doctor,
• 0:20
Speaker 1: and his name was Dolittle. John Dolittle m D.
• 0:26
  Speaker 2: M d.
• 0:27
Speaker 1: Means that he was a proper doctor and knew a
• 0:31
Speaker 1: whole lot. He lived in a little town called Puddle,
• 0:36
Speaker 1: beyond the marsh All. The folks young and old knew
• 0:40
Speaker 1: him well by sight, and whenever he walked down the
• 0:44
Speaker 1: street in his high hat, everyone would say, there goes
• 0:49
Speaker 1: the doctor. He's a clever man. And the dogs and
• 0:54
Speaker 1: the children would all run up and follow behind him,
• 0:58
Speaker 1: and even the crows that lived in the church tower
• 1:02
Speaker 1: would caw and nod their heads. The house he lived
• 1:07
Speaker 1: in on the edge of the town was quite small,
• 1:12
Speaker 1: but his garden was very large and had a wide
• 1:15
Speaker 1: lawn and stone seats and weeping willows hanging over. His sister,
• 1:23
Speaker 1: Sarah Doolittle, was housekeeper for him, but the doctor looked
• 1:28
Speaker 1: after the garden himself. He was very fond of animals
• 1:34
Speaker 1: and kept many kinds of pets. Besides the goldfish in
• 1:39
Speaker 1: the pond at the bottom of his garden, he had
• 1:42
Speaker 1: rabbits in the pantry, white mice in his piano, a
• 1:48
Speaker 1: squirrel in the linen closet, and a hedgehog in the cellar.
• 1:54
Speaker 1: He had a cow with a calf too, and an
• 1:57
Speaker 1: old lame horse twenty five years of age, and chickens
• 2:02
Speaker 1: and pigeons and two lambs and many other animals. But
• 2:08
Speaker 1: his favorite pets were Dab Dab, the duck, Jip, the
• 2:14
Speaker 1: dog Gub Gub, the baby pig, Polynesia the parrot, and
• 2:21
Speaker 1: the owl too too. His sister used to grumble about
• 2:27
Speaker 1: all these animals and said they made the house untidy.
• 2:32
Speaker 1: And one day when an old lady with rheumatism came
• 2:36
Speaker 1: to see the doctor, she sat on the hedgehog who
• 2:39
Speaker 1: was sleeping on the sofa, and never came to see
• 2:43
Speaker 1: him any more, but drove every Saturday all the way
• 2:47
Speaker 1: to Oxenthorpe, another town ten miles off, to see a
• 2:52
Speaker 1: different doctor. Then his sister, Sarah Doolittle came to him
• 2:59
Speaker 1: and said, John, how can you expect sick people to
• 3:03
Speaker 1: come and see you when you keep all these animals
• 3:06
Speaker 1: in the house. It's a fine doctor would have his
• 3:09
Speaker 1: parlor full of hedgehogs and mice that's the fourth personage.
• 3:13
Speaker 1: These animals have driven away, Squire Jenkins and the parson
• 3:18
Speaker 1: say they wouldn't come near your house again, no matter
• 3:21
Speaker 1: how sick they are. We are getting poorer every day.
• 3:26
Speaker 1: If you go on like this, none of the best
• 3:28
Speaker 1: people will have you for a doctor. But I like
• 3:33
Speaker 1: the animals better than the best people, said the doctor.
• 3:39
Speaker 1: You are ridiculous, said his sister, and walked out of
• 3:43
Speaker 1: the room. So as time went on, the doctor got
• 3:49
Speaker 1: more and more animals, and the people who came to
• 3:53
Speaker 1: see him got less and less, till at last he
• 3:58
Speaker 1: had no one left except the cat's meat man, who
• 4:02
Speaker 1: didn't mind any kind of animals. But the cat's meat
• 4:07
Speaker 1: man wasn't very rich, and he only got sick once
• 4:11
Speaker 1: a year at Christmas time, when he used to give
• 4:15
Speaker 1: the doctor sixpence for a bottle of medicine. Sixpence a
• 4:21
Speaker 1: year wasn't enough to live on even in those days
• 4:25
Speaker 1: long ago. And if the doctor hadn't had some money
• 4:29
Speaker 1: saved up in his money box, no one knows what
• 4:33
Speaker 1: would have happened. And he kept on getting still more pets,
• 4:39
Speaker 1: and of course it cost a lot to feed them,
• 4:43
Speaker 1: and the money he had saved up grew littler and littler.
• 4:49
Speaker 1: Then he sold his piano and let the mice live
• 4:53
Speaker 1: in a bureau drawer. But the money he got for that,
• 4:58
Speaker 1: too began to go, so he sold the brown suit
• 5:02
Speaker 1: he wore on Sundays and went on becoming poorer and poorer.
• 5:09
Speaker 1: And now when he walked down the street in his
• 5:13
Speaker 1: high hat, people would say to one another, there goes
• 5:18
Speaker 1: John Dolittle m d. There was a time when he
• 5:22
Speaker 1: was the best known doctor in the West Country. Look
• 5:25
Speaker 1: at him now he hasn't any money, and his stockings
• 5:28
Speaker 1: are full of holes. But the dogs and the cats
• 5:34
Speaker 1: and the children still ran up and followed him through
• 5:39
Speaker 1: the town, the same as they had done when he
• 5:43
Speaker 1: was rich. End of the first chapter.
• 5:50
Speaker 3: The second chapter, animal Language. It happened one day that
• 5:57
Speaker 3: the doctor was sitting in his kitchen talking with the
• 6:00
Speaker 3: cat's meat man, who had come to see him with
• 6:02
Speaker 3: a stomach ache. Why don't you give up being a
• 6:06
Speaker 3: people's doctor and be an animal doctor, asked the cat's
• 6:10
Speaker 3: meat man. The parrot Polynesia, was sitting in the window,
• 6:15
Speaker 3: looking out at the rain and singing a sailor song
• 6:18
Speaker 3: to herself. She stopped singing and started to listen. You see, doctor,
• 6:25
Speaker 3: the cat's meat man went on, you know all about animals,
• 6:29
Speaker 3: much more than what these here vets do. That book
• 6:32
Speaker 3: you wrote about cats, Why it's wonderful. I can't read
• 6:36
Speaker 3: or write myself, or maybe i'd write some books. But
• 6:40
Speaker 3: my wife, Theodosia, she's a scholar, she is, and she
• 6:44
Speaker 3: read your book to me. Well, it's wonderful, that's all
• 6:48
Speaker 3: can be said. Wonderful. You might have been a cat yourself.
• 6:52
Speaker 3: You know the way they think and listen. You can
• 6:55
Speaker 3: make a lot of money doctoring animals, do you know that?
• 6:59
Speaker 3: You see, I'd send all the old women who had
• 7:02
Speaker 3: sick cats or dogs to you, and if they didn't
• 7:04
Speaker 3: get sick fast enough, I could put something in the
• 7:07
Speaker 3: meat I sell em to make em sick.
• 7:09
  Speaker 4: See.
• 7:10
Speaker 3: Oh no, said the doctor quickly. You mustn't do that.
• 7:14
Speaker 3: That wouldn't be right. Oh I didn't mean real sick,
• 7:19
Speaker 3: answered the cat's meat man. Just a little something to
• 7:23
Speaker 3: make 'em droopy like was what I had reference to.
• 7:26
Speaker 3: But as you say, maybe it ain't quite fair on
• 7:29
Speaker 3: the animals. But they'll get sick anyway because the old
• 7:32
Speaker 3: women always give em too much to eat. And look
• 7:36
Speaker 3: all the farmers round about who had lame horses and
• 7:39
Speaker 3: weak lambs. They'd come be an animal doctor. When the
• 7:45
Speaker 3: cat's meat man had gone, the parrot flew off the
• 7:48
Speaker 3: window onto the doctor's table and said, that man's got sense.
• 7:53
Speaker 3: That's what you ought to do. Be an animal doctor.
• 7:56
Speaker 3: Give the silly people up. If they haven't brains enough
• 7:59
Speaker 3: to see or the best doctor in the world, take
• 8:01
Speaker 3: care of animals instead. They'll soon find it out. Be
• 8:05
Speaker 3: an animal doctor. Oh, there are plenty of animal doctors,
• 8:11
Speaker 3: said John Doolittle, putting the flower pots outside on the
• 8:15
Speaker 3: window sill to get the rain. Yes, there are plenty,
• 8:20
Speaker 3: said Polynesia, but none of them are any good at all.
• 8:23
Speaker 3: Now listen, doctor, and I'll tell you something. Did you
• 8:26
Speaker 3: know that animals can talk? I knew that parrots can talk,
• 8:31
Speaker 3: said the doctor. Oh, we parrots can talk in two languages,
• 8:36
Speaker 3: people's language and bird language, said Polynesia proudly. If I
• 8:42
Speaker 3: say Polly wants a cracker, you understand me. But hear
• 8:47
Speaker 3: this cockawe feefe. Good gracious, cried the doctor. What does
• 8:55
Speaker 3: that mean? That means is the porridge hot? Yet in
• 8:59
Speaker 3: bird language? My you don't say so, said the doctor.
• 9:06
Speaker 3: You never talked that way to me before? What would
• 9:11
Speaker 3: have been the good, said Polynesia, dusting some cracker crumbs
• 9:15
Speaker 3: off her left wing. You wouldn't have understood me if
• 9:19
Speaker 3: I had tell me some more, said the doctor, all excited,
• 9:24
Speaker 3: and he rushed over to the dresser drawer and came
• 9:26
Speaker 3: back with the butcher's book and a pencil. Now, don't
• 9:30
Speaker 3: go too fast, and I'll write it down. This is interesting,
• 9:34
Speaker 3: very interesting, something quite new. Give me the birds a
• 9:38
Speaker 3: B C first, slowly now. So that was the way
• 9:44
Speaker 3: the doctor came to know that animals had a language
• 9:46
Speaker 3: of their own and could talk to one another. And
• 9:50
Speaker 3: all that afternoon, while it was raining, Polynesia sat on
• 9:54
Speaker 3: the kitchen table giving him bird words to put down
• 9:57
Speaker 3: in the book. At tea time, when the dog Jip
• 10:01
Speaker 3: came in, the parrot said to the doctor, See he's
• 10:06
Speaker 3: talking to you. Looks to me as though he were
• 10:09
Speaker 3: scratching his ear, said the doctor. But animals don't always
• 10:14
Speaker 3: speak with their mouths, said the parrot, in a high voice,
• 10:18
Speaker 3: raising her eyebrows. I talk with their ears, with their feet,
• 10:23
Speaker 3: with their tails, with everything. Sometimes they don't want to
• 10:27
Speaker 3: make a noise. Do you see now the way he's
• 10:30
Speaker 3: twitching up? One side of his nose. What's that mean,
• 10:35
Speaker 3: asked the doctor. That means can't you see that it
• 10:40
Speaker 3: has stopped raining? Polynesia answered, he is asking you a question.
• 10:46
Speaker 3: Dogs nearly always use their noses for asking questions. After
• 10:51
Speaker 3: a while, with the parrot's help, the doctor got to
• 10:54
Speaker 3: learn the language of the animals so well that he
• 10:57
Speaker 3: could talk to them himself and understand and everything they said.
• 11:02
Speaker 3: Then he gave up being a people's doctor all together.
• 11:07
Speaker 3: As soon as the cats meat man had told everyone
• 11:10
Speaker 3: that John Dolittle was going to become an animal doctor,
• 11:13
Speaker 3: old ladies began to bring him their pet pugs and
• 11:16
Speaker 3: poodles who had eaten too much cake, and farmers came
• 11:20
Speaker 3: many miles to show him sick cows and sheep. One
• 11:25
Speaker 3: day a plow horse was brought to him, and the
• 11:27
Speaker 3: poor thing was terribly glad to find a man who
• 11:30
Speaker 3: could talk in horse language. You know, doctor, said the
• 11:35
Speaker 3: horse that vet over the hill knows nothing at all.
• 11:39
Speaker 3: He has been treating me six weeks now for spavins.
• 11:43
Speaker 3: What I need is spectacles. I'm going blind in one eye.
• 11:46
Speaker 3: There's no reason why horses shouldn't wear glasses the same
• 11:49
Speaker 3: as people. But that stupid man over the hill never
• 11:53
Speaker 3: even looked at my eyes. He kept on giving me
• 11:55
Speaker 3: big pills. I tried to tell him, but he couldn't
• 11:59
Speaker 3: understand a word of horse language. What I need is spectacles,
• 12:05
Speaker 3: of course, of course, said the doctor. I'll get you
• 12:09
Speaker 3: some at once. I would like a pair like yours,
• 12:13
Speaker 3: said the horse. Only green. They'll keep the sun out
• 12:16
Speaker 3: of my eyes while I'm plowing the fifty acre field. Certainly,
• 12:21
Speaker 3: said the doctor. Green ones you shall have. You know.
• 12:27
Speaker 3: The trouble is, sir, said the plow horse, as the
• 12:30
Speaker 3: doctor opened the front door to let him out. The
• 12:34
Speaker 3: trouble is that anybody thinks he can doctor animals just
• 12:38
Speaker 3: because the animals don't complain. As a matter of fact,
• 12:42
Speaker 3: it takes a much cleverer man to be a really
• 12:44
Speaker 3: good animal doctor than it does to be a good
• 12:47
Speaker 3: people's doctor. My farmer's boy thinks he knows all about horses.
• 12:52
Speaker 3: I wish you could see him. His face is so fat,
• 12:55
Speaker 3: he looks as though he had no eyes, and he
• 12:58
Speaker 3: has got as much brain as a potato bug. He
• 13:01
Speaker 3: tried to put a mustard plaster on me last week.
• 13:05
Speaker 3: Where did he put it? Asked the doctor. Oh, he
• 13:08
Speaker 3: didn't put it anywhere on me, said the horse. He
• 13:12
Speaker 3: only tried to. I kicked him into the duck pond. Well, well,
• 13:18
Speaker 3: said the doctor. I'm a pretty quiet creature as a rule,
• 13:23
Speaker 3: said the horse, very patient with people, don't make much fuss.
• 13:29
Speaker 3: But it was bad enough to have that vet giving
• 13:31
Speaker 3: me the wrong medicine. And when that red faced booby
• 13:35
Speaker 3: started to monkey with me, I just couldn't bear it
• 13:38
Speaker 3: any more. Did you hurt the boy much, asked the doctor.
• 13:44
Speaker 3: Oh no, said the horse. I kicked him in the
• 13:47
Speaker 3: right place. The vet's looking after him. Now, when will
• 13:50
Speaker 3: my glasses be ready? I'll have them for you next week,
• 13:55
Speaker 3: said the doctor. Come in again Tuesday, good morning. Then
• 14:01
Speaker 3: John Dolittle got a fine big pair of green spectacles,
• 14:05
Speaker 3: and the plow horse stopped going blind in one eye
• 14:08
Speaker 3: and could see as well as ever. And soon it
• 14:12
Speaker 3: became a common sight to see farm animals wearing glasses
• 14:15
Speaker 3: in the country round Puddleby, and a blind horse was
• 14:18
Speaker 3: a thing unknown, And so it was with all the
• 14:22
Speaker 3: other animals that were brought to him. As soon as
• 14:25
Speaker 3: they found that he could talk their language, they told
• 14:28
Speaker 3: him where the pain was and how they felt, And
• 14:31
Speaker 3: of course it was easy for him to cure them. Now,
• 14:35
Speaker 3: all these animals went back and told their brothers and
• 14:38
Speaker 3: friends that there was a doctor in the little house
• 14:41
Speaker 3: with the big garden who really was a doctor. And
• 14:45
Speaker 3: whenever any creatures got sick, not only horses and cows
• 14:49
Speaker 3: and dogs, but all the little things of the fields,
• 14:52
Speaker 3: like harvest mice and water voles, badgers and bats, they
• 14:57
Speaker 3: came at once to his house on the edge of
• 14:59
Speaker 3: the town, so that his big garden was nearly always
• 15:02
Speaker 3: crowded with animals trying to get in to see him.
• 15:06
Speaker 3: There were so many that came that he had to
• 15:09
Speaker 3: have special doors made for the different kinds. He wrote
• 15:13
Speaker 3: horses over the front door, cows over the side door,
• 15:19
Speaker 3: and sheep on the kitchen door. Each kind of animal
• 15:24
Speaker 3: had a separate door. Even the mice had a tiny
• 15:27
Speaker 3: tunnel made for them into the cellar, where they waited
• 15:30
Speaker 3: patiently in rows for the doctor to come round to them.
• 15:36
Speaker 3: And so in a few years time, every living thing
• 15:39
Speaker 3: for Miles and Miles got to know about John Doolittle.
• 15:43
Speaker 3: M d And the birds who flew to other countries
• 15:47
Speaker 3: in the winter told the animals in foreign lands of
• 15:50
Speaker 3: the wonderful doctor of puddle beyond the marsh, who could
• 15:54
Speaker 3: understand their talk and help them in their troubles. In
• 15:59
Speaker 3: this he became famous among the animals all over the world,
• 16:03
Speaker 3: better known even than he had been among the folks
• 16:06
Speaker 3: of the West Country. And he was happy and liked
• 16:09
Speaker 3: his life very much. One afternoon, when the doctor was
• 16:15
Speaker 3: busy writing in a book, Polynesia sat in the window,
• 16:19
Speaker 3: as she nearly always did, looking out at the leaves
• 16:22
Speaker 3: blowing about in the garden. Presently, she laughed aloud. What
• 16:28
Speaker 3: is it, Polynesia, asked the doctor, looking up from his book.
• 16:32
Speaker 3: I was just thinking, said the parrot, and she went
• 16:35
Speaker 3: on looking at the leaves. What were you thinking? I
• 16:40
Speaker 3: was thinking about, people, said Polynesia. People make me sick.
• 16:45
Speaker 3: They think they're so wonderful. The world has been going
• 16:48
Speaker 3: on now for thousands of years, hasn't it. And the
• 16:51
Speaker 3: only thing in animal language that people have learned to
• 16:54
Speaker 3: understand is that when a dog wags his tail, he
• 16:57
Speaker 3: means I'm glad. It's funny, isn't it. You are the
• 17:01
Speaker 3: very first man to talk like us. Oh, sometimes people
• 17:05
Speaker 3: annoy me dreadfully such air as they put on talking
• 17:09
Speaker 3: about the dumb animals.
• 17:11
  Speaker 2: Dumb huh?
• 17:12
Speaker 3: Why I knew a macaw once who could say good
• 17:15
Speaker 3: morning in seven different ways without once opening his mouth.
• 17:19
Speaker 3: He could talk every language and Greek. An old professor
• 17:24
Speaker 3: with a gray beard bought him, but he didn't stay,
• 17:27
Speaker 3: he said. The old man didn't talk Greek right, and
• 17:29
Speaker 3: he couldn't stand listening to him teach the language wrong.
• 17:33
Speaker 3: I often wonder what's become of him. That bird knew
• 17:36
Speaker 3: more geography than people will ever know. People Golly, I
• 17:41
Speaker 3: suppose if people ever learned to fly like any common
• 17:44
Speaker 3: hedge sparrow, we shall never hear the end of it.
• 17:49
Speaker 3: You're a wise old bird, said the doctor. How old
• 17:52
Speaker 3: are you really? I know that parrots and elephants sometimes
• 17:56
Speaker 3: live to be very, very old. I can never be
• 17:59
Speaker 3: quite sure of my age, said Polynesia. It's either a
• 18:04
Speaker 3: hundred and eighty three or a hundred and eighty two.
• 18:08
Speaker 3: But I know that when I first came here from Africa,
• 18:11
Speaker 3: King Charles was still hiding in the oak tree. Because
• 18:14
Speaker 3: I saw him. He looked scared to death. End of
• 18:20
  Speaker 3: the second chapter.
• 18:22
Speaker 5: The third chapter titled more Money Troubles and soon now
• 18:28
Speaker 5: the doctor began to make money again, and his sister
• 18:31
Speaker 5: Sarah bought a new dress and was happy. Some of
• 18:35
Speaker 5: the animals who came to see him were so sick
• 18:38
Speaker 5: that they had to stay at the doctor's house for
• 18:40
Speaker 5: a week, and when they were getting better, they used
• 18:43
Speaker 5: to sit in chairs on the lawn, and often even
• 18:47
Speaker 5: after they got well, they did not want to go away.
• 18:51
Speaker 5: They liked the doctor and his house so much, and
• 18:54
Speaker 5: he never had the heart to refuse them when they
• 18:56
Speaker 5: asked if they could stay with him. So in this
• 18:59
Speaker 5: way he went on getting more and more pets. Once,
• 19:04
Speaker 5: when he was sitting on his garden wall smoking a
• 19:07
Speaker 5: pipe in the evening, an Italian organ grinder came round
• 19:11
Speaker 5: with the monkey on a string. The doctor saw at
• 19:14
Speaker 5: once that the monkey's collar was too tight and that
• 19:17
Speaker 5: he was dirty and unhappy, so he took the monkey
• 19:21
Speaker 5: away from the Italian, gave the man a shilling and
• 19:24
Speaker 5: told him to go. The organ grinder got awfully angry
• 19:29
Speaker 5: and said that he wanted to keep the monkey, but
• 19:32
Speaker 5: the doctor told him that if he didn't go away,
• 19:34
Speaker 5: he would punch him on the nose. John Doolittle was
• 19:39
Speaker 5: a strong man, though he wasn't very tall, So the
• 19:42
Speaker 5: Italian went away saying rude things, and the monkey stayed
• 19:45
Speaker 5: with doctor Doolittle and had a good home. The other
• 19:49
Speaker 5: animals in the house called him chee chee, which is
• 19:52
Speaker 5: a common word in monkey language meaning ginger. And another time,
• 19:59
Speaker 5: when the circus came to puddle By, the crocodile, who
• 20:02
Speaker 5: had a bad toothache, escaped at night and came into
• 20:04
Speaker 5: the doctor's garden. The doctor talked to him in crocodile
• 20:08
Speaker 5: language and took him into the house and made his
• 20:10
Speaker 5: tooth better. But when the crocodile saw what a nice
• 20:14
Speaker 5: house it was, with all the different places for the
• 20:16
Speaker 5: different kinds of animals, he too wanted to live with
• 20:19
Speaker 5: the doctor. He asked, couldn't he sleep in the fish
• 20:22
Speaker 5: pond at the bottom of the garden if he promised
• 20:25
Speaker 5: not to eat the fish. When the circus men came
• 20:28
Speaker 5: to take him back, he got so wild and savage
• 20:30
Speaker 5: that he frightened them away. But to everyone in the
• 20:34
Speaker 5: house he was always as gentle as a kitten. But
• 20:40
Speaker 5: now the old ladies grew afraid to send their lap
• 20:43
Speaker 5: dogs to doctor Doolittle because of the crocodile, and the
• 20:47
Speaker 5: farmers wouldn't believe that he would not eat the lambs
• 20:49
Speaker 5: and sick cabs they brought to be cured. So the
• 20:52
Speaker 5: doctor went to the crocodile and told him he must
• 20:54
Speaker 5: go back to his circus. But he wept such big
• 20:58
Speaker 5: tears and begged so hard to be allowed to stay
• 21:01
Speaker 5: that the doctor hadn't the heart to turn him out.
• 21:05
Speaker 5: So then the doctor's sister came to him and said, John,
• 21:09
Speaker 5: E must send that creature away. Now the farmers and
• 21:12
Speaker 5: the old ladies are afraid to send their animals to you.
• 21:15
Speaker 5: Just as we were beginning to be well off again,
• 21:18
Speaker 5: now we shall be ruined entirely. This is the last straw.
• 21:22
Speaker 5: I will no longer be housekeeper for you if you
• 21:24
Speaker 5: don't send away that alligator. It isn't an alligator, said
• 21:29
  Speaker 5: the doctor. It's a crocodile. I don't care what you
• 21:34
Speaker 5: call it, said his sister. It's a nasty thing to
• 21:36
Speaker 5: find under the bed. I won't have it in the house,
• 21:41
Speaker 5: but he has promised me. The doctor answered that he
• 21:43
Speaker 5: will not bite anyone. He doesn't like the circus, and
• 21:47
Speaker 5: I haven't the money to send him back to Africa
• 21:49
Speaker 5: where he comes from. He minds his own business, and
• 21:53
Speaker 5: on the whole is very well behaved. Don't be so fussy,
• 21:58
Speaker 5: I tell you, I will not have him around, said Sarah.
• 22:01
Speaker 5: He eats the linoleum. If you don't send him away
• 22:05
Speaker 5: this minute, I'll I'll go and get married. All right,
• 22:09
Speaker 5: said the doctor, Go and get married. It can't be helped.
• 22:13
Speaker 5: And he took down his hat and went out into
• 22:15
Speaker 5: the garden. So Sarah Doolittle packed up her things and
• 22:19
Speaker 5: went off, and the doctor was left all alone with
• 22:21
Speaker 5: his animal family. And very soon he was poorer than
• 22:27
Speaker 5: he had ever been before. With all these mouths to fill,
• 22:31
Speaker 5: and the house to look after, and no one to
• 22:34
Speaker 5: do the mending, and no money coming in to pay
• 22:36
Speaker 5: the butcher's bill. Things began to look very difficult. But
• 22:40
Speaker 5: the doctor didn't worry at all. Money is a nuisance,
• 22:44
Speaker 5: he used to say, We'll all be much better off
• 22:46
Speaker 5: if it had never been invented. What does money matter,
• 22:50
Speaker 5: so long as we're happy. But soon the animals themselves
• 22:55
Speaker 5: began to get worried, and one evening, when the doctor
• 22:59
Speaker 5: was asleep in his chair before the kitchen fire, they
• 23:02
Speaker 5: began talking it over among themselves in whispers. And the
• 23:06
Speaker 5: owl too, too, who was good at arithmetic, figured it
• 23:10
Speaker 5: out that there was only money enough left to last
• 23:12
Speaker 5: another week. If they each had one meal a day
• 23:15
Speaker 5: and no more. Then the parrot said, I think we
• 23:19
Speaker 5: all ought to do the housework ourselves. At least we
• 23:22
Speaker 5: can do that much. After all, it is for our
• 23:25
Speaker 5: sakes that the old man finds himself so lonely and
• 23:28
Speaker 5: so poor. So it was agreed that the monkey Chee Chee,
• 23:32
Speaker 5: was to do the cooking and mending. The dog was
• 23:35
Speaker 5: to sweep the floors, the duck was to dust and
• 23:38
Speaker 5: make the beds. The owl, too, too, was to keep
• 23:40
Speaker 5: the accounts, and the pig was to do the gardening.
• 23:44
Speaker 5: They made Polynesia the parrot housekeeper and laundress, because she
• 23:47
Speaker 5: was the oldest. Of course, at first they all found
• 23:52
Speaker 5: their new jobs very hard to do, all except Chee Chee,
• 23:55
Speaker 5: who had hands and could do things like a man.
• 23:58
Speaker 5: But they soon got used to it, and they used
• 24:00
Speaker 5: to take it great fun to watch Jip the dog
• 24:02
Speaker 5: sweeping his tail over the floor with the rag tied
• 24:04
Speaker 5: onto it for a broom. After a little they got
• 24:08
Speaker 5: to do the work so well that the doctor said
• 24:10
Speaker 5: that he had never had his house kept so tidy
• 24:13
Speaker 5: or so clean before. In this way things went along
• 24:17
Speaker 5: all right for a while, but without money they found
• 24:20
Speaker 5: it very hard then the animals made a vegetable and
• 24:24
Speaker 5: flour stall outside the garden gate and sold raddishes and
• 24:27
Speaker 5: roses to the people that passed by along the road.
• 24:31
Speaker 5: But still they didn't seem to make enough money to
• 24:34
Speaker 5: pay all the bills. And still the doctor wouldn't worry.
• 24:38
Speaker 5: When the parrot came to him and told him that
• 24:40
Speaker 5: the fishmonger wouldn't give them any more fish, he said,
• 24:44
Speaker 5: never mind. So long as the hens lay eggs and
• 24:47
Speaker 5: the cow gives milk, we can have omelets and junket,
• 24:51
Speaker 5: and there are plenty of vegetables left in the garden.
• 24:54
Speaker 5: The winter is still a long way off. Don't fuss.
• 24:58
Speaker 5: That was the trouble with Sarah, She would, I wonder
• 25:01
Speaker 5: how Sarah's getting on. An excellent woman in some ways.
• 25:06
Speaker 5: Well well, But the snow came earlier than usual that year,
• 25:11
Speaker 5: and although the old lame horse hauled in plenty of
• 25:14
Speaker 5: wood from the forest outside the town so they could
• 25:16
Speaker 5: have a big fire in the kitchen, most of the
• 25:19
Speaker 5: vegetables in the garden were gone and the rest were
• 25:22
Speaker 5: covered with snow, and many of the animals were really hungry.
• 25:27
Speaker 5: End of the third chapter.
• 25:29
Speaker 6: The fourth chapter, titled a Message from Africa. That winter
• 25:35
Speaker 6: was a very cold one. And one night in December,
• 25:39
Speaker 6: when they were all sitting around the warm fire in
• 25:41
Speaker 6: the kitchen and the doctor was reading aloud to them
• 25:44
Speaker 6: out of books he had written himself in animal language,
• 25:48
Speaker 6: the owl Toutu suddenly said, ssh, what's that noise outside?
• 25:53
Speaker 6: They all listened, and presently they heard the sound of
• 25:56
Speaker 6: someone running. Then the door flew open and the monkey
• 25:59
Speaker 6: chee chee in badly out of breath. Doctor he cried,
• 26:02
Speaker 6: I've just had a message from a cousin of mine
• 26:05
Speaker 6: in Africa. There is a terrible sickness among the monkeys
• 26:08
Speaker 6: out there. They are all catching it, and they are
• 26:10
Speaker 6: all dying in hundreds. They have heard of you and
• 26:13
Speaker 6: beg you to come to Africa to stop the sickness.
• 26:16
Speaker 6: Who brought the message, asked the doctor, taking off his
• 26:19
Speaker 6: spectacles and laying down his book. A swallow said, chee chee,
• 26:23
Speaker 6: she is outside on the rain butt. Bring her in
• 26:26
Speaker 6: by the fire, said the doctor. She must be perished
• 26:29
Speaker 6: with the cold. The swallows flew south six weeks ago.
• 26:32
Speaker 6: So the swallow was brought in, all huddled and shivering,
• 26:36
Speaker 6: and although she was a little afraid at first, she
• 26:39
Speaker 6: soon got warmed up and sat on the edge of
• 26:41
Speaker 6: the mantelpiece and began to talk. When she had finished,
• 26:45
Speaker 6: the doctor said, I would gladly go to Africa, especially
• 26:49
Speaker 6: in this bitter weather. But I'm afraid we haven't money
• 26:52
Speaker 6: enough to buy the tickets. Get be the money box,
• 26:55
Speaker 6: che chee. So the monkey climbed up and got it
• 26:57
Speaker 6: off the top shelf of the dresser. There was nothing
• 27:00
Speaker 6: in it, not one single penny. I felt sure there
• 27:04
Speaker 6: was twopence left, said the doctor. There was, said the owl.
• 27:08
Speaker 6: But you spent it on a rattle for that badger's
• 27:10
Speaker 6: baby when he was teething, did I said the doctor.
• 27:14
Speaker 6: Dear me, dear me, what a nuisance money is to
• 27:17
Speaker 6: be sure? Well, never mind. Perhaps if I go down
• 27:21
Speaker 6: to the seaside, I shall be able to borrow a
• 27:24
Speaker 6: boat that will take us to Africa. I knew a
• 27:26
Speaker 6: seaman once who brought his baby to me with measles.
• 27:30
Speaker 6: Maybe he'll lend us his boat. The baby got well
• 27:33
Speaker 6: so early the next morning the doctor went down to
• 27:36
Speaker 6: the seashore, and when he came back, he told the
• 27:40
Speaker 6: animals that it was all right. The sailor was going
• 27:43
Speaker 6: to lend them the boat. Then the crocodile and the
• 27:46
Speaker 6: monkey and the parrot were very glad and began to
• 27:49
Speaker 6: sing because they were going back to Africa, their real home.
• 27:53
Speaker 6: And the doctor said, I shall only be able to
• 27:56
Speaker 6: take you three with Chip the dog Dab dab, the
• 27:59
Speaker 6: duck gub gub, the pig and the owl too. To
• 28:02
Speaker 6: the rest of the animals, like the dormice and the
• 28:04
Speaker 6: water bowls and the bats. They will have to go
• 28:07
Speaker 6: back and live in the fields where they were born
• 28:09
Speaker 6: till we come home again. But as most of them
• 28:12
Speaker 6: sleep through the winter, they won't mind that, and besides,
• 28:16
Speaker 6: it wouldn't be good for them to go to Africa.
• 28:19
Speaker 6: So then the parrot, who had been on long sea
• 28:21
Speaker 6: voyages before, began telling the doctor all the things you
• 28:24
Speaker 6: would have to take with him on the ship. You
• 28:27
Speaker 6: must have plenty of pilot bread, she said, hard tack
• 28:30
Speaker 6: they call it. And you must have beef in cans
• 28:33
Speaker 6: and an anchor. I expect the ship will have its
• 28:36
Speaker 6: own anchor, said the doctor. Well make sure, said Polynesia,
• 28:41
Speaker 6: because it's very important. You can't stop if you haven't
• 28:44
Speaker 6: got an anchor, and you'll lead a bell. What's that for,
• 28:48
Speaker 6: asked the doctor to tell the time by, said the parrot.
• 28:51
Speaker 6: You go and ring it every half hour, and then
• 28:54
Speaker 6: you know what time it is, and bring a whole
• 28:56
Speaker 6: lot of rope. It always comes in handy on voyages.
• 29:01
Speaker 6: Then they began to wonder where they were going to
• 29:03
Speaker 6: get the money from to buy all the things they needed. Oh,
• 29:06
Speaker 6: bother it money again, cried the doctor. Goodness, I shall
• 29:10
Speaker 6: be glad to get to Africa, where we don't have
• 29:13
Speaker 6: to have any I'll go and ask the grocer if
• 29:15
Speaker 6: he will wait for his money till I get back. No,
• 29:18
Speaker 6: I'll send the sailor to ask him. So the sailor
• 29:21
Speaker 6: went to see the grocer, and presently he came back
• 29:25
Speaker 6: with all the things they wanted. Then the animals packed up,
• 29:29
Speaker 6: and after they had turned off the water so the
• 29:31
Speaker 6: pipes wouldn't freeze and put up the shutters, they closed
• 29:34
Speaker 6: the house and gave the key to the old horse
• 29:36
Speaker 6: who lived in the stable. And when they had seen
• 29:39
Speaker 6: that there was plenty of hay in the loft to
• 29:41
Speaker 6: last the horse through the winter, they carried all their
• 29:43
Speaker 6: luggage down to the seashore and got onto the boat.
• 29:47
Speaker 6: The cat's meat's man was there to see them off,
• 29:50
Speaker 6: and he brought a large soot pudding as a present
• 29:52
Speaker 6: for the doctor, because he said he had been told
• 29:55
Speaker 6: you couldn't get soot puddings in foreign parts. As soon
• 29:59
Speaker 6: as they were on the ship, gub Gub the pig
• 30:01
Speaker 6: asked where the beds were, for it was four o'clock
• 30:03
Speaker 6: in the afternoon and he wanted his nap, so Polynesia
• 30:07
Speaker 6: took him downstairs into the inside of the ship and
• 30:10
Speaker 6: showed him the beds, set all on top of one another,
• 30:13
Speaker 6: like bookshelves against a wall. Why that isn't a bed,
• 30:16
Speaker 6: cried gub Gub. That's a shelf. Beds are always like
• 30:20
Speaker 6: that on ships, said the parrot. It isn't a shelf.
• 30:23
Speaker 6: Climb up and do it and go to sleep. That's
• 30:25
  Speaker 6: what you call a bunk. I don't think i'll go
• 30:29
Speaker 6: to bed yet, said gub Gub. I'm too excited. I
• 30:32
Speaker 6: want to go upstairs again and see them start. Well,
• 30:35
Speaker 6: this is your first trip, said Polynesia. You will get
• 30:38
Speaker 6: used to the life after a while, and she went
• 30:41
Speaker 6: back up the stairs of the ship, humming this song
• 30:44
Speaker 6: to herself. I've seen the Black Sea and the Red Sea.
• 30:47
Speaker 6: I've rounded the Isle of Wight, I've discovered the yellow River,
• 30:51
Speaker 6: and the orange too.
• 30:52
  Speaker 2: By night.
• 30:53
Speaker 6: Now greenland drops behind again, and I sail the ocean blue.
• 30:57
Speaker 6: I'm tired of all these colors, Jane, so I'm coming
• 31:00
Speaker 6: back to you. They were just going to start on
• 31:03
Speaker 6: their journey when the doctor said he would have to
• 31:06
Speaker 6: go back and ask the sailor the way to Africa.
• 31:09
Speaker 6: But the swallow said that she had been to that
• 31:11
Speaker 6: country many times and would show them how to get there.
• 31:15
Speaker 6: So the doctor told Chee Chee to pull up the anchor,
• 31:18
Speaker 6: and the voyage began.
• 31:23
Speaker 7: The fifth chapter the Great Journey. Now for six whole weeks,
• 31:28
Speaker 7: they went sailing on and on over the rolling sea,
• 31:32
Speaker 7: following the swallow, who flew before the ship to show
• 31:34
Speaker 7: them the way. At night, she carried a tiny lantern
• 31:37
Speaker 7: so they should not miss her in the dark, and
• 31:40
Speaker 7: the people on the other ships that passed said that
• 31:42
Speaker 7: the light must be.
• 31:43
  Speaker 8: A shooting star.
• 31:45
Speaker 7: As they sailed further and further into the south, it
• 31:47
Speaker 7: got warmer and warmer Polynesia. Chee Chee and the crocodile
• 31:52
Speaker 7: enjoyed the hot sun no end. They ran about, laughing
• 31:55
Speaker 7: and looking over the side of the ship to see
• 31:57
Speaker 7: if they could see Africa yet, But the pig and
• 32:00
Speaker 7: the dog and the owl too too, could do nothing
• 32:02
Speaker 7: in such weather, but sat at the end of the
• 32:05
Speaker 7: ship in the shade of a big barrel, with their
• 32:07
Speaker 7: tongues hanging out, drinking lemonade.
• 32:09
  Speaker 8: Dab dab.
• 32:10
Speaker 7: The duck used to keep herself cool by jumping into
• 32:13
Speaker 7: the sea and swimming behind the ship, and every once
• 32:15
Speaker 7: in a while, when the top of her head got
• 32:17
Speaker 7: too hot, she would dive under the ship and come
• 32:19
Speaker 7: up on the other side. In this way too, she
• 32:22
Speaker 7: used to catch herrings on Tuesdays and Fridays, when everybody
• 32:25
Speaker 7: on the boat ate fish to make the beef last manga.
• 32:28
Speaker 7: When they got near to the equator, they saw some
• 32:30
Speaker 7: flying fishes coming towards them, and the fishes asked the
• 32:33
Speaker 7: parrot if this was doctor doolittle ship. When she told
• 32:36
Speaker 7: them it was, they said they were glad because the
• 32:38
Speaker 7: monkeys in Africa were getting worried that he would never come. Polynesia.
• 32:42
Speaker 7: Asked them how many miles they had yet to go,
• 32:44
Speaker 7: and the flying fishes said it was only fifty five
• 32:46
Speaker 7: miles now to the coast of Africa. And another time
• 32:50
Speaker 7: a whole school of porpoises came dancing through the waves
• 32:53
Speaker 7: and they too asked Polynesia if this was the ship
• 32:55
Speaker 7: of the famous doctor, And when they heard that it was,
• 32:58
Speaker 7: they asked the parrot of the dock wanted anything for
• 33:01
Speaker 7: his journey, and Polynesia said, yes, we have run short
• 33:05
Speaker 7: of onions. There is an island not far from here,
• 33:08
Speaker 7: said the porpoises, where the wild onions grow tall and strong.
• 33:12
Speaker 7: Keep straight on, we will get some and catch up
• 33:14
Speaker 7: to you. So the porpoises dashed away through the sea,
• 33:18
Speaker 7: and very soon the parrots saw them again, coming up behind,
• 33:20
Speaker 7: dragging the onions through the waves in big nets made
• 33:23
Speaker 7: of seaweed. The next evening, as the sun was going down,
• 33:27
Speaker 7: the doctor said, get me the telescope.
• 33:29
  Speaker 4: Chee, chee.
• 33:30
Speaker 7: Our journey is nearly ended. Very soon we should be
• 33:32
Speaker 7: able to see the shores of Africa. And about half
• 33:36
Speaker 7: an hour later, sure enough they thought they could see
• 33:38
Speaker 7: something in front that might be land, But it began
• 33:41
Speaker 7: to get darker and darker, and they couldn't be sure.
• 33:44
Speaker 7: Then a great storm came up with thunder and lightning.
• 33:47
Speaker 7: The wind howled, the rain came down in torrents, and
• 33:50
Speaker 7: the waves got so high they splashed right over the boat. Presently,
• 33:54
Speaker 7: there was a big bang the ship stopped and rolled
• 33:58
Speaker 7: over on its side. What's happened, asked the doctor, coming
• 34:02
Speaker 7: up from downstairs. I'm not sure, said the parrot, but
• 34:05
Speaker 7: I think we're shipwrecked. Tell the duck to get out
• 34:07
Speaker 7: and see. So Dab dab dived right down under the waves,
• 34:12
Speaker 7: and when she came up, she said they had struck
• 34:14
Speaker 7: a rock. There was a big hole in the bottom
• 34:16
Speaker 7: of the ship. The water was coming in and they
• 34:18
Speaker 7: were sinking. First, we must have run into Africa, said
• 34:21
Speaker 7: the doctor. Dear me, dear me, Well, we must all
• 34:24
Speaker 7: swim to land. But Chee Chee and Gub Gub did
• 34:27
Speaker 7: not know how to swim. Get the rope, said Polynesia.
• 34:31
Speaker 7: I told you it would come in handy. Where's that duck?
• 34:34
Speaker 7: Come here, dab dab. Take this end of the rope,
• 34:36
Speaker 7: fly to the shore and tie it on to a
• 34:38
Speaker 7: palm tree, and we'll hold the other end on the
• 34:40
Speaker 7: ship here. Then those that can't swim must climb along
• 34:43
Speaker 7: the rope until they reached the land. That's what you
• 34:46
Speaker 7: call a life line. So they all got safely to
• 34:49
Speaker 7: the shore, some swimming, some flying, and those that climbed
• 34:53
Speaker 7: along the rope brought the doctor's trunk and hand bag
• 34:56
Speaker 7: with them. But the ship was no good any more
• 34:59
Speaker 7: with the big hole in the bottom, and presently the
• 35:01
Speaker 7: rough sea beat it to pieces on the rocks, and
• 35:04
Speaker 7: the timbers floated away. Then they all took shelter in
• 35:07
Speaker 7: a nice dry cave they found high up on the
• 35:10
Speaker 7: cliffs till the storm was over. When the sun came
• 35:13
Speaker 7: out next morning, they went down to the sandy beach
• 35:16
Speaker 7: to dry themselves. Dear old Africa, sighed Polynesia. It's good
• 35:20
Speaker 7: to get back. Just think it'll be a hundred and
• 35:23
Speaker 7: sixty nine years tomorrow since I was here, and it
• 35:26
Speaker 7: hasn't changed a bit. Same old palm trees, same old
• 35:29
Speaker 7: red earth, same old black ants. There's no place like home.
• 35:34
Speaker 7: And the others noticed she had tears in her eyes,
• 35:37
Speaker 7: she was so pleased to see her country once again.
• 35:41
Speaker 7: Then the doctor missed his high hat, for it had
• 35:43
Speaker 7: been blown away into the sea during the storm. So
• 35:46
Speaker 7: Dab Dab went out to look for it, and presently
• 35:48
Speaker 7: she saw it a long way off, floating on the
• 35:50
Speaker 7: water like a toy boat. When she flew down to
• 35:53
Speaker 7: get it, she found one of the white mice, very frightened,
• 35:56
Speaker 7: sitting inside it. What are you doing here, asked the duck,
• 36:00
Speaker 7: told to stay behind in puddleby. I didn't want to
• 36:03
Speaker 7: be left behind, said the mouse. I wanted to see
• 36:06
Speaker 7: where Africa was, like I have relatives there. So I
• 36:09
Speaker 7: hid in the baggage and was brought one to the
• 36:11
Speaker 7: ship with the hard tack. When the ship sank, I
• 36:14
Speaker 7: was terribly frightened because I cannot soon far. I swam
• 36:17
Speaker 7: as long as I could, but I soon got all
• 36:18
Speaker 7: exhausted and thought I was going to sink. And then
• 36:21
Speaker 7: just at that moment, the old man's hat came floating by,
• 36:23
Speaker 7: and I got into it because I did not want
• 36:25
Speaker 7: to be drowned. So the duck took up the hat
• 36:29
Speaker 7: with the mouse in it and brought it to the
• 36:30
Speaker 7: doctor on the shore, and they all gathered round to
• 36:32
Speaker 7: have a look. That's what you call a stowaway, said
• 36:36
Speaker 7: the parrot. Presently, when they were looking for a place
• 36:40
Speaker 7: in the trunk where the white mouse could travel comfortably,
• 36:42
Speaker 7: the monkey Chee chee suddenly said, sh I hear footsteps
• 36:46
Speaker 7: in the jungle. They all stopped talking and listened, and
• 36:51
Speaker 7: soon a black man came down out of the woods
• 36:53
Speaker 7: and asked them what they were doing there. My name
• 36:56
Speaker 7: is John Doolittle m D. Said the doctor, I have
• 37:00
Speaker 7: been asked to come to Africa to cure the monkeys
• 37:02
Speaker 7: who were sick. You must all come before the king,
• 37:06
Speaker 7: said the black man. What king asked the doctor, who
• 37:09
Speaker 7: didn't want to waste any time the King of the
• 37:12
Speaker 7: jolligan Ki. The man answered, all these lands belonged to him,
• 37:16
Speaker 7: and all strangers must be brought before him.
• 37:18
  Speaker 2: Follow me.
• 37:20
Speaker 7: So they gathered up their baggage and went off, following
• 37:23
Speaker 7: the land through the jungle end of the fifth chapter.
• 37:28
Speaker 7: The sixth chapter Polynesia and the King. When they had
• 37:34
Speaker 7: gone a little way through the thick forest, they came
• 37:37
Speaker 7: to a wide clear space, and they saw the king's palace,
• 37:40
Speaker 7: which was made of mud. This was where the king
• 37:43
Speaker 7: lived with his queen Ermintrude and their son, Prince Bumpo.
• 37:47
Speaker 7: The prince was away fishing for salmon in the river,
• 37:50
Speaker 7: but the king and queen were sitting under an umbrella
• 37:52
Speaker 7: before the palace door, and Queen Ermintrude was asleep. When
• 37:56
Speaker 7: the doctor had come up to the palace, the king
• 37:58
Speaker 7: asked him his business, and the doctor told him why
• 38:01
Speaker 7: he had come to Africa. You may not travel through
• 38:04
Speaker 7: my lands said the king. Many years ago a white
• 38:07
Speaker 7: man came to these shores, and I was very kind
• 38:10
Speaker 7: to him. But after he had dug holes in the
• 38:13
Speaker 7: ground to get the gold and killed all the elephants
• 38:15
Speaker 7: to get their ivory tusks, he went away secretly in
• 38:18
Speaker 7: his ship, without so much as saying thank you. Never
• 38:22
Speaker 7: again shall a white man travel through the lands of Jolliginki.
• 38:26
Speaker 7: Then the king turned to see some of the black
• 38:28
Speaker 7: men who were standing near, and said, take away this
• 38:31
Speaker 7: medicine man with all his animals, and lock them up
• 38:34
Speaker 7: in my strongest prison. So six of the black men
• 38:38
Speaker 7: led the doctor and all his pets away and shut
• 38:40
Speaker 7: them up on a stone dungeon. The dungeon had only
• 38:43
Speaker 7: one little window, high up in the wall, with bars
• 38:46
Speaker 7: in it, and the door was strong and thick. Then
• 38:49
Speaker 7: they all grew very sad, and Gub Gub the pig
• 38:52
Speaker 7: began to cry. But she she said, he would spank
• 38:55
Speaker 7: him if he didn't stop that horrible noise, and he
• 38:58
Speaker 7: kept quiet. Are we all here, asked the doctor, after
• 39:02
Speaker 7: he had got used to the dim light. Yes, I
• 39:05
Speaker 7: think so, said the duck, and started to count them.
• 39:07
Speaker 7: Where's Polynesia? Asked the crocodile. She isn't here, are you sure,
• 39:13
Speaker 7: said the doctor. Look again, Polynesia, Polynesia, where are you?
• 39:19
Speaker 7: I suppose she escaped, grumbled the crocodile. While that's just
• 39:22
Speaker 7: like her, sneaked off into the jungle as soon as
• 39:25
Speaker 7: her friends got into trouble. I'm not that kind of
• 39:29
Speaker 7: a bird, said the parrot, climbing out of the pocket
• 39:32
Speaker 7: in the tail of the doctor's coat. You see, I'm
• 39:36
Speaker 7: small enough to get through the bars of that window,
• 39:38
Speaker 7: and I was afraid they would put me in a
• 39:39
Speaker 7: cage instead. So while the king was busy talking, I
• 39:42
Speaker 7: hid in the doctor's pocket, and here I am. That's
• 39:45
Speaker 7: what you call a ruse, she said, smoothing down her
• 39:48
Speaker 7: feathers with her beak. Good gracious, cried the doctor. Gord
• 39:52
Speaker 7: Lucky I didn't sit on you. Now, listen, said Polynesia
• 39:56
Speaker 7: to night. As soon as it gets dark, I am
• 39:59
Speaker 7: going to deep through the bars of that window and
• 40:02
Speaker 7: fly over to the palace. And then you'll see I'll
• 40:05
Speaker 7: soon find a way to make the king let us
• 40:07
Speaker 7: all out of prison. Oh what can you do? Said
• 40:12
Speaker 7: gub Gub, turning up his nose and beginning to cry again.
• 40:15
Speaker 7: You're only a bird, quite true, said the parrot. But
• 40:19
Speaker 7: do not forget that although I am only a bird,
• 40:22
Speaker 7: I can talk like a man, and I know these people.
• 40:28
Speaker 7: So that night, when the moon was shining through the
• 40:30
Speaker 7: palm trees and all the king's men were asleep, the
• 40:32
Speaker 7: parrot slipped out through the bars of the prison and
• 40:35
Speaker 7: flew across to the palace. The pantry window had been
• 40:38
Speaker 7: broken by a tennis ball the week before, and Polynesia
• 40:41
Speaker 7: popped in through the hole in the glass. She heard
• 40:44
Speaker 7: Prince Bumpo snoring in his bedroom at the back of
• 40:46
Speaker 7: the palace. Then she tiptoed up the stairs till she
• 40:49
Speaker 7: came to the King's bedroom. She opened the door gently
• 40:52
Speaker 7: and peeped in. The Queen was away at a dance
• 40:56
Speaker 7: that night at her cousin's, but the King was in bed,
• 40:58
Speaker 7: fast asleep. Polynesia crept in very softly and got unto
• 41:03
Speaker 7: the bed. Then she coughed, just the way doctor Dolittle
• 41:07
Speaker 7: used to cough. Polynesia could mimic any one. The King
• 41:12
Speaker 7: opened his eyes and said, sleepily, is that you room?
• 41:16
  Speaker 9: Intrude?
• 41:17
Speaker 7: He thought it was the queen come back from the dance.
• 41:20
Speaker 7: Then the parrot coughed again, loud like a man, and
• 41:23
Speaker 7: the king sat up wide awake and said, Who's that?
• 41:27
  Speaker 9: I am?
• 41:28
Speaker 7: Doctor Doolittle, said the parrot, just the way the doctor
• 41:31
Speaker 7: would have said it. What are you doing in my bedroom?
• 41:34
  Speaker 8: Cried the king.
• 41:34
Speaker 7: How dare you get out of prison?
• 41:36
  Speaker 2: Where are you?
• 41:37
Speaker 7: I don't see you. But the parrot just laughed, a long,
• 41:41
Speaker 7: deep jolly laughed like the doctor's. Stop laughing and come
• 41:45
Speaker 7: here at once so I can see you, foolish king
• 41:50
Speaker 7: answered Polynesia. Have you forgotten that you are talking to
• 41:54
Speaker 7: John Doolittle M d. The most wonderful man on earth.
• 41:57
Speaker 7: Of course you cannot see me. I have made my
• 42:00
Speaker 7: self invisible. There is nothing I cannot do. Now listen.
• 42:04
Speaker 7: I have come here tonight to warn you. If you
• 42:06
Speaker 7: don't let me and my animals travel through your kingdom,
• 42:09
Speaker 7: I will make you and all your people sick like
• 42:11
Speaker 7: the monkeys. For I can make people well, and I
• 42:14
Speaker 7: can make people ill just by raising my little finger.
• 42:18
Speaker 7: Send your soldiers at once to open the dungeon door,
• 42:21
Speaker 7: or you shall have mumps before the morning sun has
• 42:23
Speaker 7: risen on the hills of Jolliginki. Then the king began
• 42:28
Speaker 7: to tremble and was very much afraid. Doctor he cried,
• 42:32
Speaker 7: it shall be as you say, but do not raise
• 42:34
Speaker 7: your little finger, please, And he jumped out of bed
• 42:38
Speaker 7: and ran to tell the soldiers to open the prison door.
• 42:41
Speaker 7: As soon as he was gone, Polynesia crept downstairs and
• 42:44
Speaker 7: left the palace by the pantry window. But the queen,
• 42:47
Speaker 7: who was just letting herself in at the back door
• 42:49
Speaker 7: with the latch key, saw the parrot getting out through
• 42:51
Speaker 7: the broken glass, And when the King came back to bed,
• 42:55
Speaker 7: she told him what she had seen. Then the king
• 42:58
Speaker 7: understood that he had been tricked, and he was dreadfully angry.
• 43:01
Speaker 7: He hurried back to the prison at once, but he
• 43:04
Speaker 7: was too late. The door stood open, the dungeon was empty,
• 43:09
Speaker 7: The doctor and all his animals were gone. End of
• 43:14
  Speaker 7: the sixth chapter.
• 43:16
Speaker 10: The seventh chapter titled The Bridge of Apes. Queen Ermintrude
• 43:26
Speaker 10: had never in her life seen her husband so terrible
• 43:29
Speaker 10: as he got that night. He gnashed his teeth with rage.
• 43:34
Speaker 10: He called everybody a fool. He threw his toothbrush at
• 43:39
Speaker 10: the palace cat. He rushed around in his night shirt
• 43:43
Speaker 10: and woke up all his army and sent them into
• 43:47
Speaker 10: the jungle to catch the doctor. Then he made all
• 43:51
Speaker 10: his servants go too, his cooks and his gardeners, and
• 43:55
Speaker 10: his barber, and Prince Bumpo's tutor. Even the Queen, who
• 44:01
Speaker 10: was tired from dancing in a pair of tight shoes,
• 44:04
Speaker 10: was packed off to help the soldiers in their search.
• 44:09
Speaker 10: All this time, the doctor and his animals were running
• 44:12
Speaker 10: through the forest towards the land of the monkeys as
• 44:15
Speaker 10: fast as they could go. Gub Gub, with his short legs,
• 44:20
Speaker 10: soon got tired and the doctor had to carry him,
• 44:24
Speaker 10: which made it pretty hard when they had the trunk
• 44:27
Speaker 10: and the handbag with them as well. The king of
• 44:31
Speaker 10: the Jolliginki thought it would be easy for his army
• 44:34
Speaker 10: to find them because the doctor was in a strange
• 44:37
Speaker 10: land and would not know his way. But he was wrong,
• 44:41
Speaker 10: because the monkey Chee Chee knew all the pass through
• 44:44
Speaker 10: the jungle better even than the king's men did, and
• 44:48
Speaker 10: he led the doctor and his pets to the very
• 44:50
Speaker 10: thickest part of the forest, a place where no man
• 44:54
Speaker 10: had ever been before, and hid them all in a
• 44:57
Speaker 10: big hollow tree between high rocks. We had better wait here,
• 45:02
Speaker 10: said Chee Chee, till the soldiers have gone back to bed.
• 45:05
Speaker 10: Then we can go into the land of the monkeys.
• 45:09
Speaker 10: We had better wait here, said Chee Chee, till the
• 45:12
Speaker 10: soldiers have gone back to bed, then we can go
• 45:15
Speaker 10: on into the land of the monkeys. So there they
• 45:19
Speaker 10: stayed the whole night through They often heard the king's
• 45:23
Speaker 10: men searching and talking in the jungle round about, but
• 45:27
Speaker 10: they were quite safe, for no one knew of that
• 45:29
Speaker 10: hiding place but Chee Chee, not even the other monkeys.
• 45:33
Speaker 10: At last, when daylight began to come through the thick
• 45:36
Speaker 10: leaves overhead, they heard Queen r Mintrude saying in a
• 45:40
Speaker 10: very tired voice that it was no use looking any more,
• 45:44
Speaker 10: that they might as well go back and get some sleep.
• 45:48
Speaker 10: As soon as the soldiers had gone home, Chee Chee
• 45:52
Speaker 10: brought the doctor and his animals out of the hiding place,
• 45:55
Speaker 10: and they set off for the land of the monkeys.
• 45:58
Speaker 10: It was a long long way, and they often got
• 46:03
Speaker 10: very tired, especially Gub Gub, but when he cried, they
• 46:08
Speaker 10: gave him milk out of the cocoanuts, which he was
• 46:11
Speaker 10: very fond of. They always had plenty to eat and
• 46:15
Speaker 10: drink because Chee Chee and Polynesia knew all the different
• 46:19
Speaker 10: kinds of fruits and vegetables, that grow in the jungle
• 46:22
Speaker 10: and where to find them, like dates and figs and
• 46:26
Speaker 10: ground nuts and ginger and yems. They used to make
• 46:31
Speaker 10: their lemonade out of the juice of wild oranges sweetened
• 46:35
Speaker 10: with honey, which they got from the bees nests in
• 46:38
Speaker 10: hollow trees. No matter what it was they asked for,
• 46:43
Speaker 10: Chee Chee and Polynesia always seemed to be able to
• 46:46
Speaker 10: get it for them, or something like it. They even
• 46:51
Speaker 10: got the doctor some tobacco one day when he had
• 46:55
Speaker 10: finished what he had brought with him and wanted to smoke.
• 47:00
Speaker 10: At night, they slept in tents made of palm leaves
• 47:03
Speaker 10: on thick, soft beds of dried grass, and after a
• 47:07
Speaker 10: while they got used to walking such a lot and
• 47:11
Speaker 10: did not get so tired, and enjoyed the life of
• 47:14
Speaker 10: travel very much. But they were always glad when the
• 47:19
Speaker 10: night came and they stopped for their resting time. Then
• 47:23
Speaker 10: the Doctor used to make a little fire of sticks,
• 47:27
Speaker 10: and after they had their supper, they would sit round
• 47:30
Speaker 10: it in a ring, listening to Polynesia singing songs about
• 47:33
Speaker 10: the sea, or to Chee Chee telling stories of the jungle.
• 47:39
Speaker 10: And many of the tales that che Chee told were
• 47:41
Speaker 10: very interesting, because although the monkeys had no history books
• 47:45
Speaker 10: of their own before Doctor Dolittle came to write them
• 47:49
Speaker 10: for them, they remember everything that happens by telling stories
• 47:53
Speaker 10: to their children. And Chee Chee spoke of many things
• 47:57
Speaker 10: his grandmother had told him, tales of long long long
• 48:02
Speaker 10: ago before Noah and the flood, of the days when
• 48:07
Speaker 10: men dressed in bear skins and lived in holes in
• 48:09
Speaker 10: the rock and ate their mutton raw because they did
• 48:13
Speaker 10: not know what cooking was, having never seen a fire.
• 48:19
Speaker 10: And he told them of the great mammoths and lizards
• 48:22
Speaker 10: as long as a train that wandered over the mountains
• 48:26
Speaker 10: in those times, nibbling from the tree tops. And often
• 48:30
Speaker 10: they got so interested listening that when he had finished,
• 48:34
Speaker 10: they found their fire had gone right out, and they
• 48:38
Speaker 10: had to scurry round to get more sticks and build
• 48:40
Speaker 10: a new one. Now, when the king's army had gone
• 48:44
Speaker 10: back and told the King that they couldn't find the doctor,
• 48:48
Speaker 10: the king sent them out again and told them they
• 48:51
Speaker 10: must stay in the jungle till they caught him. So
• 48:54
Speaker 10: all this time, while the Doctor and his animals were
• 48:57
Speaker 10: going along towards the land of the monkeys, thinking themselves
• 49:01
Speaker 10: quite safe, they were still being followed by the King's men.
• 49:06
Speaker 10: If Chee Chee had known this, he would most likely
• 49:08
Speaker 10: have hidden them again, but he didn't know it. One day,
• 49:13
Speaker 10: Chee Chee climbed up a high rock and looked out
• 49:16
Speaker 10: over the tree tops, and when he came down, he
• 49:19
Speaker 10: said they were now quite close to the land of
• 49:21
Speaker 10: the monkeys and would soon be there. And that same evening,
• 49:25
Speaker 10: sure enough they saw Chee Chee's cousin and a lot
• 49:28
Speaker 10: of other monkeys who had not yet got sick, sitting
• 49:31
Speaker 10: in the trees by the edge of a swamp, looking
• 49:34
Speaker 10: and waiting for them. And when they saw the famous
• 49:38
Speaker 10: doctor really come, these monkeys made a tremendous noise, cheering
• 49:42
Speaker 10: and waving leaves and swinging out of the branches to
• 49:44
Speaker 10: greet him. They wanted to carry his bag and his
• 49:49
Speaker 10: trunk and everything he had, and one of the bigger
• 49:53
Speaker 10: ones even carried gub Gub, who had got tired again.
• 49:58
Speaker 10: Then two of them rushed on in front to tell
• 50:02
Speaker 10: the sick monkeys that the great Doctor had come at last.
• 50:08
Speaker 10: But the King's men, who were still following, had heard
• 50:12
Speaker 10: the noise of the monkeys cheering, and they at last
• 50:15
Speaker 10: knew where the doctor was and hastened on to catch him.
• 50:20
Speaker 10: The big monkey carrying gub Gub was coming along behind slowly,
• 50:25
Speaker 10: and he saw the captain of the army sneaking through
• 50:28
Speaker 10: the trees, so he hurried after the doctor and told
• 50:31
Speaker 10: him to run. Then they all ran harder than they
• 50:36
Speaker 10: had ever run in their lives, and the king's men
• 50:39
Speaker 10: coming after them began to run too, and the captain
• 50:42
Speaker 10: ran hardest of all. Then the doctor tripped over his
• 50:47
Speaker 10: medicine bag and fell down in the mud, and the
• 50:50
Speaker 10: captain thought he would surely catch him this time. But
• 50:54
Speaker 10: the captain had very long ears, though his hair was
• 50:58
Speaker 10: very short, and he sprang forward to take hold of
• 51:01
Speaker 10: the doctor. One of his ears caught fast in a tree,
• 51:05
Speaker 10: and the rest of the army had to stop and
• 51:07
Speaker 10: help him. By this time the doctor had picked himself up,
• 51:12
Speaker 10: and on they went again, running and running, and Chee
• 51:16
Speaker 10: Chee shouted, it's all right, we haven't far to go now.
• 51:22
Speaker 10: But before they could get into the land of the monkeys,
• 51:25
Speaker 10: they came to a steep cliff with a river flowing below.
• 51:29
Speaker 10: This was the end of the Kingdom of Jolliginki, and
• 51:33
Speaker 10: the land of the Monkeys was on the other side
• 51:36
Speaker 10: across the river, and Jip the dog looked down over
• 51:41
Speaker 10: the edge of the steep steep cliff and said, golly,
• 51:45
Speaker 10: how are we ever going to get across? Oh, dear,
• 51:49
Speaker 10: said Gub Gub. The king's men are quite close now,
• 51:53
Speaker 10: look at them. I am afraid we are going to
• 51:56
Speaker 10: be taken back to prison again. And he began to weep,
• 52:01
Speaker 10: but the big monkey who was carrying the pig, dropped
• 52:03
Speaker 10: him on the ground and cried out to the other monkeys. Boys,
• 52:07
  Speaker 10: a bridge, quick, make a bridge. We've only got a
• 52:11
Speaker 10: minute to do it. They've got the captain loose and
• 52:13
Speaker 10: he's coming on like a deer. Get lively. A bridge,
• 52:18
Speaker 10: A bridge. The doctor began to wonder what they were
• 52:22
Speaker 10: going to make a bridge out of, and he gazed
• 52:25
Speaker 10: around to see if they had any boards hidden any place.
• 52:29
Speaker 10: But when he looked back at the cliff, there hanging
• 52:33
Speaker 10: across the river was a bridge all ready for him,
• 52:38
Speaker 10: made of living monkeys. For while his back was turned,
• 52:42
Speaker 10: the monkeys, quick as a flash, had made themselves into
• 52:46
Speaker 10: a bridge just by holding their hands and feet, and
• 52:50
Speaker 10: the big one shouted to the doctor, walk over, walk over,
• 52:55
Speaker 10: all of you, hurry, Gub gub was a bit scared
• 53:00
Speaker 10: walking on such a narrow bridge at that dizzy height
• 53:03
Speaker 10: above the river, but he got over all right, and
• 53:08
Speaker 10: so did all of them. John Doolittle was the last
• 53:12
Speaker 10: to cross, and just as he was getting to the
• 53:14
Speaker 10: other side, the King's men came rushing up to the
• 53:17
Speaker 10: edge of the cliff. Then they shook their fists and
• 53:20
Speaker 10: yelled with rage, before they saw they were too late.
• 53:24
Speaker 10: The doctor and all his animals were safe in the
• 53:26
Speaker 10: land of the monkeys, and the bridge was pulled across
• 53:29
Speaker 10: to the other side. Then Cheechee turned the doctor and said,
• 53:33
Speaker 10: many great explorers and gray bearded naturalists have lain long
• 53:37
Speaker 10: weeks hidden in the jungle waiting to see the monkeys
• 53:41
Speaker 10: do that trick, but we never let a white man
• 53:43
Speaker 10: get a glimpse of it. Before you are the first
• 53:46
Speaker 10: to see the famous bridge of apes. And the doctor
• 53:50
  Speaker 10: felt very pleased.
• 53:54
Speaker 6: The eighth chapter titled The Leader of the Lions, John
• 54:01
Speaker 6: Dolittle now became dreadfully, awfully busy. He found hundreds and
• 54:06
Speaker 6: thousands of monkeys, sick gorillas orangutangs, chimpanzees, dog faced baboons, marmosets,
• 54:15
Speaker 6: gray monkeys, red ones, all kinds and Minty had died.
• 54:21
Speaker 6: The first thing he did was to separate the sick
• 54:24
Speaker 6: ones from the well ones. Then he got Chee Chee
• 54:27
Speaker 6: and his cousin to build him a little house of grass.
• 54:31
Speaker 6: The next thing he made all the monkeys who were
• 54:33
Speaker 6: still well come and be vaccinated. And for three days
• 54:37
Speaker 6: and three nights the monkeys kept coming from the jungles
• 54:41
Speaker 6: and the valleys and the hills to the little house
• 54:44
Speaker 6: of grass where the doctor sat all day and all night,
• 54:49
Speaker 6: vaccinating and vaccinating. Then he had another house made, a
• 54:54
Speaker 6: big one with lots of beds in it, and he
• 54:57
Speaker 6: put all the sick ones in this house. But so
• 55:01
Speaker 6: many were sick there were not enough well ones to
• 55:04
Speaker 6: do the nursing. So he sent messages to the other animals,
• 55:08
Speaker 6: like the lions and the leopards and the antelopes to
• 55:11
Speaker 6: come and help with the nursing. But the leader of
• 55:14
Speaker 6: the lions was a very proud creature, and when he
• 55:18
Speaker 6: came to the doctor's big house full of beds, he
• 55:21
Speaker 6: seemed angry and scornful. Do you dare to ask me, sir?
• 55:27
Speaker 6: He said, glaring at the doctor, Do you dare to
• 55:30
Speaker 6: ask me me? The king of beasts to wait on
• 55:34
Speaker 6: a lot of dirty monkeys. Why I wouldn't even eat
• 55:38
Speaker 6: them between meals. Although the lion looked very terrible, the
• 55:43
Speaker 6: doctor tried hard not to seem afraid of him. I
• 55:47
Speaker 6: didn't ask you to eat them, he said quietly. And besides,
• 55:51
Speaker 6: they're not dirty. They've all had a bath this morning.
• 55:55
Speaker 6: Your coat looks as though it needed brushing badly. Now listen,
• 56:01
Speaker 6: and I'll tell you something. The day may come when
• 56:04
Speaker 6: the lions get sick, and if you don't help the
• 56:07
Speaker 6: other animals now, the lions may find themselves left all
• 56:12
Speaker 6: alone when they are in trouble. That often happens to
• 56:16
Speaker 6: proud people. The lions are never in trouble. They only
• 56:21
Speaker 6: make trouble, said the leader, turning up his nose, and
• 56:25
Speaker 6: he stalked away into the jungle, feeling he had been
• 56:29
Speaker 6: rather smart and clever. Then the leopards got proud too
• 56:33
Speaker 6: and said they wouldn't help. And then, of course the antelopes,
• 56:37
Speaker 6: although they were too shy and timid to be rude
• 56:40
Speaker 6: to the doctor like the lion, they pawed the ground
• 56:43
Speaker 6: and smiled foolishly and said they had never been nurses before.
• 56:49
Speaker 6: And now the poor doctor was worried frantic, wondering where
• 56:53
Speaker 6: he could get help enough to care for all these
• 56:56
Speaker 6: thousands of monkeys in bed. But the leader of lions,
• 57:01
Speaker 6: when he got back to his den, saw his wife,
• 57:03
Speaker 6: the Queen Lioness, come running out to meet him, with
• 57:06
Speaker 6: her hair untidy. One of the cubs won't eat, She said,
• 57:11
Speaker 6: I don't know what to do with him. He hasn't
• 57:13
Speaker 6: taken a thing since last night. And she began to
• 57:17
Speaker 6: cry and shake with nervousness, for she was a good mother,
• 57:21
Speaker 6: even though she was a lioness. So the leader went
• 57:24
Speaker 6: into his dead and looked at his children, two very
• 57:27
Speaker 6: cunning little cubs lying on the floor, and one of
• 57:31
Speaker 6: them seemed quite poorly. Then the lion told his wife,
• 57:35
Speaker 6: quite proudly, just what he had said to the doctor,
• 57:39
Speaker 6: and she got so angry she nearly drove him out
• 57:43
Speaker 6: of the dead. You never did have a grain of scent,
• 57:47
Speaker 6: she screamed. All the animals from here to the Indian
• 57:50
Speaker 6: Ocean are talking about this wonderful man, and how he
• 57:53
Speaker 6: can cure any kind of sickness, and how kind he is,
• 57:57
Speaker 6: the only man in the whole world who can talk
• 58:00
Speaker 6: the language of the animals. And now, now, when we
• 58:05
Speaker 6: have a sick baby on our hands. You must go
• 58:08
Speaker 6: and offend him, you great booby. Nobody but a fool
• 58:12
Speaker 6: is ever rude to a good doctor. You, And she
• 58:16
Speaker 6: started pulling her husband's hair. Go back to that white
• 58:21
Speaker 6: man at once, she yelled, and tell him you're sorry,
• 58:24
Speaker 6: and take all the other empty headed lions with you,
• 58:27
Speaker 6: and those stupid leopards and antelopes. Then do everything the
• 58:31
Speaker 6: doctor tells you. Work hard, and perhaps he will be
• 58:34
Speaker 6: kind enough to come and see the cob later. Now
• 58:38
Speaker 6: be off hurry. I tell you you're not fit to be
• 58:41
Speaker 6: a father. And she went into the den next door,
• 58:45
Speaker 6: where another mother lion lived, and told her all about it.
• 58:50
Speaker 6: So the leader of the lions went back to the
• 58:52
Speaker 6: doctor and said, I happened to be passing this way
• 58:56
Speaker 6: and thought i'd look in. Got any help yet, No,
• 59:00
  Speaker 6: said the doctor, I haven't, and I'm dreadfully worried. Help's
• 59:05
Speaker 6: pretty hard to come by these days, said the lion.
• 59:09
Speaker 6: Animals don't seem to want o work any more. You
• 59:12
Speaker 6: can't blame them in a way. Well, seeing your in difficulties,
• 59:17
Speaker 6: I don't mind doing what I can just to oblige you,
• 59:20
Speaker 6: so long as I don't have to wash the creatures,
• 59:24
Speaker 6: and I have told all the other hunting animals to
• 59:26
Speaker 6: come and do their share. The leopards should be here
• 59:29
Speaker 6: any minute now. Oh and by the way, we've got
• 59:33
  Speaker 6: a sick cub at home. I don't think there's much
• 59:36
Speaker 6: the matter with him myself, but the wife is anxious.
• 59:40
Speaker 6: If you are around that way this evening, you might
• 59:43
Speaker 6: take a look at him, will you. Then the doctor
• 59:46
Speaker 6: was very happy for all the lions, and the leopards,
• 59:49
Speaker 6: and the antelopes, and the giraffes, and the zebras, all
• 59:53
Speaker 6: the animals of the forests and the mountains and the
• 59:56
Speaker 6: plains came to help him in his work. There or
• 1:00:00
Speaker 6: so many of them that he had to send some
• 1:00:02
Speaker 6: away and kept only the cleverest. And now very soon
• 1:00:08
Speaker 6: the monkeys began to get better. At the end of
• 1:00:11
Speaker 6: a week, the big house full of beds was half empty,
• 1:00:16
Speaker 6: and at the end of the second week the last
• 1:00:18
Speaker 6: monkey had got well. Then the doctor's work was done,
• 1:00:24
Speaker 6: and he was so tired he went to bed and
• 1:00:28
Speaker 6: slept for three days without even turning over end of the.
• 1:00:35
Speaker 11: Eighth the ninth chapter, titled the Monkey's Council, she Chee
• 1:00:46
Speaker 11: stood outside the doctor's door, keeping everybody away till he
• 1:00:51
Speaker 11: woke up. Then John Dolittle told the monkeys that he
• 1:00:55
Speaker 11: must now go back to Puddleby. They were very surprised
• 1:00:59
Speaker 11: at this, for they have thought that he was going
• 1:01:01
Speaker 11: to stay with him forever. And that night all the
• 1:01:05
Speaker 11: monkeys get together in the jungle to talk it over.
• 1:01:10
Speaker 11: And the chief chimpanzee rose up and said, why is
• 1:01:14
Speaker 11: it the good man is going away? Is he not
• 1:01:17
Speaker 11: happy here with us? But none of them could answer him.
• 1:01:23
Speaker 11: Then the grand gorilla got up and said, I think
• 1:01:27
Speaker 11: we should all go to him and ask him to stay.
• 1:01:31
Speaker 11: Perhaps if we make him a new house in a
• 1:01:33
Speaker 11: bigger bed, and promise him plenty of monkey servants to
• 1:01:36
Speaker 11: work for him and make life pleasant for him, perhaps
• 1:01:40
Speaker 11: then he will not wish to go. Then chie Chee
• 1:01:45
Speaker 11: got up, and all the others whispered, sh look, Chee Chee,
• 1:01:50
Speaker 11: the great traveler is about to speak. And Chee Chee
• 1:01:54
Speaker 11: said to the other monkeys, my friends, I am afraid
• 1:01:58
Speaker 11: it is useless half the dog to stay. He owes
• 1:02:02
Speaker 11: money and Puddleby and says he must go back and
• 1:02:05
Speaker 11: pay it. The monkeys asked him, what is money? Then
• 1:02:12
Speaker 11: Chee Chee told them that in the land of the
• 1:02:14
Speaker 11: white men, you could get nothing without money, you could
• 1:02:18
Speaker 11: do nothing without money, that it was almost impossible to
• 1:02:21
Speaker 11: live without money. And some of the masked, but can
• 1:02:26
Speaker 11: you not even eat and drink without paying? But Chee
• 1:02:31
Speaker 11: Chee shook his head, and then he told them that
• 1:02:33
Speaker 11: even he, when he was with the organ grinder, had
• 1:02:37
Speaker 11: been made to ask the children for money. And the
• 1:02:40
Speaker 11: chief Chimpanzee turned to the oldest Orangutang and said, Cousin,
• 1:02:46
Speaker 11: surely these men be strange creatures who would wish to
• 1:02:50
Speaker 11: live in such a land, My gracious, how paltry. Then
• 1:02:56
Speaker 11: chie Chee said, when we were coming to you, we
• 1:02:59
Speaker 11: had no boat to cross the sea in and no
• 1:03:02
Speaker 11: money to buy food to eat on our journey. So
• 1:03:05
Speaker 11: a man lent us some biscuits, and we said we
• 1:03:08
Speaker 11: would pay him when we came back. And we borrowed
• 1:03:11
Speaker 11: a boat from a sailor, but it was broken on
• 1:03:14
Speaker 11: the rocks. May reach the shores of Africa. Now the
• 1:03:19
Speaker 11: doctor says he must go back and get the sailor
• 1:03:22
Speaker 11: another boat, because the man was poor and his ship
• 1:03:26
Speaker 11: was all he had. And the monkeys were all silent
• 1:03:30
Speaker 11: for a while, sitting quite still upon the ground and
• 1:03:33
Speaker 11: thinking hard. At last, the biggest baboon got up and said,
• 1:03:39
Speaker 11: I do not think we ought to let this good
• 1:03:41
Speaker 11: man leave our land, though we have given him a
• 1:03:44
Speaker 11: fine present to take with him, so that he may
• 1:03:47
Speaker 11: know we are grateful for all that he has done
• 1:03:49
Speaker 11: for us. And a little tiny red monkey, who was
• 1:03:53
Speaker 11: sitting up in a tree, shouted down, I think that too,
• 1:03:59
Speaker 11: And then they all cried out, making a great noise. Yes, yes,
• 1:04:04
Speaker 11: let us give him the finest present a white man
• 1:04:06
Speaker 11: ever had. Now they began to wonder and ask one
• 1:04:11
Speaker 11: another what would be the best thing to give him,
• 1:04:14
Speaker 11: And one said fifty bags of coconuts, and another a
• 1:04:19
Speaker 11: hundred bunches of bananas. At least he shall not have
• 1:04:23
Speaker 11: to buy his fruit in the land where you pay
• 1:04:26
Speaker 11: to eat. But chie Chee told him that all these
• 1:04:30
Speaker 11: things would be too heavy to carry so far and
• 1:04:33
Speaker 11: would go bad before half was eaten. If you want
• 1:04:38
Speaker 11: to please him, he said, give him an animal. You
• 1:04:42
Speaker 11: may be sure he will be kind to it. Give
• 1:04:44
Speaker 11: him some rare animal that they have not got in
• 1:04:47
Speaker 11: the menageries. And the monkeys asked him what are menageries?
• 1:04:53
Speaker 11: Then Chee Chee explained to them that menagerie replaces in
• 1:04:56
Speaker 11: the land of the white men, where animals were putt
• 1:05:00
Speaker 11: in cages for people to come and look at. And
• 1:05:03
Speaker 11: the monkeys were very shocked and said to one another,
• 1:05:07
Speaker 11: these men are like thoughtless young ones, stupid and easily amused.
• 1:05:12
Speaker 11: Ssh there's a prison, he means. So then they asked Chichie,
• 1:05:18
Speaker 11: what rare animal it could be that they could give
• 1:05:20
Speaker 11: the doctor one the white man had not seen before.
• 1:05:25
Speaker 11: And the mayor of the Marmosets asked, have they got
• 1:05:29
Speaker 11: iguana over there? But chi Chi said yes, there is
• 1:05:34
Speaker 11: one in the London zoo. And another asked have they
• 1:05:38
Speaker 11: gotten a copy? But chi Chi said yes in Belgium,
• 1:05:44
Speaker 11: where my organ grinder took me five years ago, they
• 1:05:48
Speaker 11: hadn't a copy. In a big city they called Antwerp.
• 1:05:52
Speaker 11: And another asked, have they got a pushbe pull you?
• 1:05:57
Speaker 11: Then Chi che said no, no white man has ever
• 1:06:01
Speaker 11: seen a push me pullyu. Let us give him that
• 1:06:07
Speaker 11: end of the ninth chapter.
• 1:06:10
Speaker 8: The tenth chapter, the rarest animal of all pushmi pullyus
• 1:06:19
Speaker 8: are now extinct. That means there aren't any more. But
• 1:06:25
Speaker 8: long ago, when doctor Dolittle was alive. There were some
• 1:06:29
Speaker 8: of them still left in the deepest jungles of Africa,
• 1:06:33
Speaker 8: and even then they were very, very scarce. They had
• 1:06:39
Speaker 8: no tail, but a head at each end, and sharp
• 1:06:43
Speaker 8: horns on each head. They were very shy and terribly
• 1:06:48
Speaker 8: hard to catch. The black men get most of their
• 1:06:51
Speaker 8: animals by sneaking up behind them while they're not looking.
• 1:06:56
Speaker 8: But you could not do this with the Pushmi pullyu,
• 1:06:59
Speaker 8: because no matter which way you came towards him, he
• 1:07:03
Speaker 8: was always facing you. And besides, only one half of
• 1:07:07
Speaker 8: him slept at a time. The other head was always
• 1:07:10
Speaker 8: awake and watching. This is why they were never caught
• 1:07:15
Speaker 8: and never seen in zoos. Though many of the greatest
• 1:07:19
Speaker 8: huntsmen and the cleverest menagerie keepers spent years of their
• 1:07:23
Speaker 8: lives searching through the jungles in all weathers for Pushmi pullyus,
• 1:07:28
Speaker 8: not a single one had ever been caught. Even then
• 1:07:32
Speaker 8: years ago. He was the only animal in the world
• 1:07:35
Speaker 8: with two heads. Well, the monkeys set out hunting this
• 1:07:41
Speaker 8: animal through the forest, and after they had gone a
• 1:07:45
Speaker 8: good many miles, one of them found peculiar footprints near
• 1:07:48
Speaker 8: the edge of a river, and they knew that a
• 1:07:51
Speaker 8: Pushmi Pullyu must be very near that spot. Then they
• 1:07:57
Speaker 8: went along the bank of the river a little way,
• 1:08:00
Speaker 8: and they saw a place where the grass was high
• 1:08:02
Speaker 8: and thick, and they guessed that he was in there.
• 1:08:06
Speaker 8: So they all joined hands and made a great circle
• 1:08:09
Speaker 8: round the high grass. The Pushmi Pullyu heard them coming,
• 1:08:13
Speaker 8: and he tried hard to break through the ring of monkeys,
• 1:08:16
Speaker 8: but he couldn't do it. When he saw that it
• 1:08:19
Speaker 8: was no use trying to escape, he sat down and
• 1:08:22
Speaker 8: waited to see what they wanted. They asked him if
• 1:08:26
Speaker 8: he would go with doctor Doolittle and be put on
• 1:08:29
Speaker 8: show in the land of the white men. But he
• 1:08:32
Speaker 8: shook both his heads hard and said, certainly not. They
• 1:08:38
Speaker 8: explained to him that he would not be shut up
• 1:08:40
Speaker 8: in a menagerie, but would just be looked at. They
• 1:08:43
Speaker 8: told him that the doctor was a very kind man,
• 1:08:46
Speaker 8: but hadn't any money, and people would pay to see
• 1:08:48
Speaker 8: a two headed animal, and the doctor would get rich
• 1:08:51
Speaker 8: and could pay for the boat he had borrowed to
• 1:08:53
Speaker 8: come to Africa in. But he answered, no, you know
• 1:08:59
Speaker 8: how shy I a. I hate being stared at, and
• 1:09:03
Speaker 8: he almost began to cry. Then for three days they
• 1:09:09
Speaker 8: tried to persuade him. At the end of the third day,
• 1:09:13
Speaker 8: he said he would come with them and see what
• 1:09:15
Speaker 8: kind of a man the doctor was first. So the
• 1:09:19
Speaker 8: monkeys traveled back with the Pushmi Pullyu, and when they
• 1:09:23
Speaker 8: came to where the doctor's little house of grass was,
• 1:09:26
Speaker 8: they knocked on the door. The duck, who was packing
• 1:09:30
Speaker 8: the trunk, said, come in, and Chee Chee very proudly
• 1:09:35
Speaker 8: took the animal inside and showed him to the doctor.
• 1:09:39
Speaker 8: What in the world is it, asked John Dolittle, gazing
• 1:09:44
Speaker 8: at the strange creature. Lord save us, cried the duck.
• 1:09:49
Speaker 8: How does it make up its mind? It doesn't look
• 1:09:54
Speaker 8: to me as though it had any, said Jip the dog.
• 1:10:00
Speaker 8: This doctor said, Chee Chee is the Pushmi Pullyu, the
• 1:10:05
Speaker 8: rarest animal of the African jungles, the only two headed
• 1:10:09
Speaker 8: beast in the world. Take him home with you and
• 1:10:13
Speaker 8: your fortune's made. People will pay any money to see him.
• 1:10:19
Speaker 8: But I don't want any money, said the doctor. Yes
• 1:10:24
Speaker 8: you do, said dab Dab the duck. Don't you remember
• 1:10:28
Speaker 8: how we had to pinch and scrape to pay the
• 1:10:30
Speaker 8: butcher's bill in Puddleby? And how are you going to
• 1:10:33
Speaker 8: get the sailor the new boat you spoke of, unless
• 1:10:36
Speaker 8: we have the money to buy it. I was going
• 1:10:39
Speaker 8: to make him one, said the doctor. Oh, do be sensible,
• 1:10:45
Speaker 8: cried Dab dab. Where would you get all the wood
• 1:10:48
Speaker 8: and the nails to make one with? And besides, what
• 1:10:51
Speaker 8: are we going to live on? We shall be poorer
• 1:10:54
Speaker 8: than ever when we get back. Chee, Chee's perfectly right.
• 1:10:58
Speaker 8: Take the funny looking thing along.
• 1:11:00
  Speaker 2: Do well?
• 1:11:04
Speaker 8: Perhaps there is something in what you say, murmured the doctor.
• 1:11:08
Speaker 8: It certainly would make a nice new kind of pet.
• 1:11:11
Speaker 8: But does the air what do you call it? Really
• 1:11:14
Speaker 8: want to go abroad? Yes, I'll go, said the Pushmi Pullyu,
• 1:11:22
Speaker 8: who saw at once from the doctor's face that he
• 1:11:24
Speaker 8: was a man to be trusted. You have been so
• 1:11:28
Speaker 8: kind to the animals here and the monkeys. Tell me
• 1:11:32
Speaker 8: that I am the only one who will do. But
• 1:11:35
Speaker 8: you must promise me that if I do not like
• 1:11:37
Speaker 8: it in the land of the white men, you will
• 1:11:39
Speaker 8: send me back. Why certainly, of course, of course, said
• 1:11:44
Speaker 8: the doctor. Excuse me, surely you are related to the
• 1:11:48
Speaker 8: dear family, are you not? Yes, said the Pushmi Pullyu
• 1:11:53
Speaker 8: to the Abyssinian gazelles and the Asiatic chamois on my
• 1:11:57
Speaker 8: mother's side. My father's great grandfather was the last of
• 1:12:01
Speaker 8: the unicorns. Most interesting, murmured the doctor, and he took
• 1:12:07
Speaker 8: a book out of the trunk which Dab Dab was packing,
• 1:12:10
Speaker 8: and began turning the pages. Let us see if Buffon
• 1:12:14
Speaker 8: says anything. I notice, said the duck, that you only
• 1:12:20
Speaker 8: talk with one of your mouths. Can't the other head
• 1:12:23
  Speaker 8: talk as well?
• 1:12:26
  Speaker 11: Oh?
• 1:12:26
Speaker 8: Yes, said the Pushmi Pullyu. But I keep the other
• 1:12:30
Speaker 8: mouth for eating. Mostly in that way, I can talk
• 1:12:33
Speaker 8: while I am eating without being rude. Our people have
• 1:12:36
Speaker 8: always been very polite. When the packing was finished and
• 1:12:41
Speaker 8: everything was ready to start, the monkeys gave a grand
• 1:12:44
Speaker 8: party for the doctor, and all the animals of the
• 1:12:47
Speaker 8: jungle came, and they had pineapples and mangoes and honey
• 1:12:52
Speaker 8: and all sorts of good things to eat and drink.
• 1:12:56
Speaker 8: After they had all finished eating, the doctor got up
• 1:12:58
Speaker 8: and said, my friends, I am not clever at speaking
• 1:13:04
Speaker 8: long words after dinner like some men, and I have
• 1:13:07
Speaker 8: just eaten many fruits and much honey. But I wish
• 1:13:11
Speaker 8: to tell you that I am very sad at leaving
• 1:13:13
Speaker 8: your beautiful country, because I have things to do in
• 1:13:17
Speaker 8: the land of the white men. I must go, And
• 1:13:20
Speaker 8: after I have gone, remember never to let the flies
• 1:13:24
Speaker 8: settle on your food before you eat it, and do
• 1:13:27
Speaker 8: not sleep on the ground when the rains are coming.
• 1:13:31
Speaker 8: Ay ah ah, I hope you will all live happily
• 1:13:34
Speaker 8: ever after. When the doctor stopped speaking and sat down,
• 1:13:39
Speaker 8: all the monkeys clapped their hands a long time and
• 1:13:42
Speaker 8: said to one another, let it be remembered always among
• 1:13:46
Speaker 8: our people that he sat and ate with us here
• 1:13:49
Speaker 8: under the trees, for surely he is the greatest of men.
• 1:13:54
Speaker 8: And the grand gorilla, who had the strength of seven
• 1:13:57
Speaker 8: horses in his hairy arms, hold a great rock up
• 1:14:01
Speaker 8: to the head of the table, and said, the stone
• 1:14:05
Speaker 8: for all time shall mark the spot. And even to
• 1:14:10
Speaker 8: this day, in the heart of the jungle, that stone
• 1:14:13
Speaker 8: still is there, and monkey mothers passing through the forest
• 1:14:18
Speaker 8: with their families still point down at it from the
• 1:14:21
Speaker 8: branches and whisper to their children, sh there it is,
• 1:14:27
Speaker 8: look where the good white man sat and ate food
• 1:14:30
Speaker 8: with us in the year of the great sickness. Then
• 1:14:36
Speaker 8: when the party was over, the doctor and his pets
• 1:14:39
Speaker 8: started out to go back to the sea shore, and
• 1:14:42
Speaker 8: the monkeys went with him as far as the edge
• 1:14:44
Speaker 8: of their country, carrying his trunks and bags, to see
• 1:14:48
Speaker 8: him off end of the tenth chapter.
• 1:14:54
Speaker 2: The eleventh chapter titled the Black Prince. By the edge
• 1:15:01
Speaker 2: of the River, they stopped and said farewell. This took
• 1:15:06
Speaker 2: a long time because all those thousands of monkeys wanted
• 1:15:11
Speaker 2: to shake John Dolittle by the hand. Afterwards, when the
• 1:15:16
Speaker 2: doctor and his pets were going on alone, Polynesia said,
• 1:15:22
Speaker 2: we must tread softly and talk low as we go
• 1:15:26
Speaker 2: through the land of the Jolliginki. If the king should
• 1:15:30
Speaker 2: hear us, he will send his soldiers to catch us again.
• 1:15:35
Speaker 2: For I am sure he's still very angry over the
• 1:15:39
Speaker 2: trick I played on him. What I am wondering, said
• 1:15:44
Speaker 2: the doctor is where we are going to get another
• 1:15:48
Speaker 2: boat to go home in?
• 1:15:50
  Speaker 6: Oh?
• 1:15:50
Speaker 2: Well, perhaps we'll find one lying about on the beach
• 1:15:55
Speaker 2: that nobody's using. Never lift your foot till you come
• 1:16:00
Speaker 2: to the style. One day, while they were passing through
• 1:16:05
Speaker 2: a very thick part of the forest, Chee Chee went
• 1:16:10
Speaker 2: ahead of them to look for cocoanuts, and while he
• 1:16:15
Speaker 2: was away, the doctor and the rest of the animals,
• 1:16:18
Speaker 2: who did not know the jangled paths so well got
• 1:16:23
Speaker 2: lost in the deep woods. They wandered around and around,
• 1:16:28
Speaker 2: but could not find their way down to the seashore.
• 1:16:32
Speaker 2: Che Chee, when he could not see them anywhere, was
• 1:16:36
Speaker 2: terribly upset. He climbed high trees and looked out from
• 1:16:41
Speaker 2: the top branches to try and see the doctor's high hat.
• 1:16:46
Speaker 2: He waved and shouted. He called to all the animals
• 1:16:50
Speaker 2: by name, but it was no use. They seemed to
• 1:16:55
Speaker 2: have disappeared altogether. Indeed, they had lost their way very badly.
• 1:17:03
Speaker 2: They had strayed a long way off the path, and
• 1:17:07
Speaker 2: the jungle was so thick with bushes and creepers and
• 1:17:12
Speaker 2: vines that sometimes they could hardly move at all, and
• 1:17:17
Speaker 2: the doctor had to take out his pocket knife and
• 1:17:21
Speaker 2: cut his way along. They stumbled into wet, boggy places,
• 1:17:27
Speaker 2: They got all tangled up in thick convolvulus runners, They
• 1:17:33
Speaker 2: scratched themselves on thorns, and twice they nearly lost the medicine.
• 1:17:39
Speaker 2: Back in the underbrush, there seemed no end to their troubles,
• 1:17:46
Speaker 2: and nowhere could they come upon a path at last.
• 1:17:51
Speaker 2: After blundering about like these for many days, getting their
• 1:17:56
Speaker 2: clothes torn and their faces covered with mud, they walked
• 1:18:01
Speaker 2: right into the king's back garden by mistake. The king's
• 1:18:06
Speaker 2: men came running up at once and caught them, But
• 1:18:10
Speaker 2: Polynesia flew into a tree in the garden without anybody
• 1:18:15
Speaker 2: seeing her, and hid herself. The doctor and the rest
• 1:18:20
Speaker 2: were taken before the can ha Ha, cried the king.
• 1:18:26
Speaker 2: So you are caught again. This time you shall not escape.
• 1:18:31
Speaker 2: Take them all back to prison, and put double locks
• 1:18:35
Speaker 2: on the door. This white man shall scrub my kitchen
• 1:18:40
Speaker 2: floor for the rest of his life. So the doctor
• 1:18:46
Speaker 2: and his pets were led back to prison and locked up,
• 1:18:50
Speaker 2: and the doctor was told that in the morning he
• 1:18:54
Speaker 2: must begin scrubbing the kitchen floor. They were all very unhappy.
• 1:19:01
Speaker 2: This is a great nuisance, said the doctor. I really
• 1:19:05
Speaker 2: must get back to paddle by. That poor sailor will
• 1:19:09
Speaker 2: think I've stolen his ship if I don't get home soon.
• 1:19:13
Speaker 2: I wonder if those hinges are loose. But the door
• 1:19:19
Speaker 2: was very strong and firmly locked. There seemed no chance
• 1:19:25
Speaker 2: of getting out. Then Gub Gub began to cry again.
• 1:19:31
Speaker 2: All this time Polynesia was still sitting in the tree
• 1:19:35
Speaker 2: in the palace garden. She was saying nothing and blinking
• 1:19:40
Speaker 2: her eyes. This was always a very bad sign with Polynesia.
• 1:19:47
Speaker 2: Whenever she said nothing and blinked her eyes, it meant
• 1:19:52
Speaker 2: that somebody had been making trouble, and she was thinking
• 1:19:56
Speaker 2: out some way to put things right. People who made
• 1:20:01
Speaker 2: trouble for Polynesia or her friends, were nearly always sorry
• 1:20:06
Speaker 2: for it afterwards. Presently, she spied Chee Chee swinging through
• 1:20:12
Speaker 2: the trees, still looking for the doctor. When Chee Chee
• 1:20:17
Speaker 2: saw her, he came into her tree and asked her
• 1:20:21
Speaker 2: what had become of him. The doctor and all the
• 1:20:25
Speaker 2: animals had been caught by the king's men and locked
• 1:20:29
Speaker 2: up again, whispered Polynesia. We lost our way in the
• 1:20:34
Speaker 2: jungle and blundered into the palace garden by mistake. But
• 1:20:40
Speaker 2: couldn't you guide them, asked Chee Chee, And he began
• 1:20:44
Speaker 2: to scold the parrot for letting them get lost while
• 1:20:49
Speaker 2: he was away looking for the cocoanuts. It was all
• 1:20:55
Speaker 2: that stupid pig's fault, said Polynesia. He would keep running
• 1:21:01
Speaker 2: off the path hunting for ginger roots, and I was
• 1:21:05
Speaker 2: kept so busy catching him and bringing him back that
• 1:21:10
Speaker 2: I turned to the left instead of the right when
• 1:21:13
Speaker 2: we reached the swamp. Look, there's Prince Bumpo coming into
• 1:21:20
Speaker 2: the garden. He must not see us. Don't move whatever
• 1:21:25
Speaker 2: you do, And there sure enough was Prince Bumpo, the
• 1:21:31
Speaker 2: King's son, opening the garden gate. He carried a book
• 1:21:37
Speaker 2: of fairy tales under his arm. He came strolling down
• 1:21:41
Speaker 2: the gravel walk, humming a sad song till he reached
• 1:21:46
Speaker 2: a stone seat right under the tree where the parrot
• 1:21:50
Speaker 2: and the monkey were hiding. Then he lay down on
• 1:21:54
Speaker 2: the seat and began reading the fairy stories to himself.
• 1:22:01
Speaker 2: Tee chee and Polynesia watched him, keeping very quiet and still.
• 1:22:08
Speaker 2: After a while, the king's son laid the book down
• 1:22:12
Speaker 2: and sighed a weary sigh. If I were only a
• 1:22:17
Speaker 2: white prince, said he, with a dreamy, far away look
• 1:22:22
Speaker 2: in his eyes. Then the parrot, talking in a small
• 1:22:27
Speaker 2: high voice like a little girl, said aloud, Bumpo, some
• 1:22:33
Speaker 2: one might turn thee into a white prince, perchance. The
• 1:22:38
Speaker 2: King's son started up off the seat and looked all around.
• 1:22:46
Speaker 2: What is this I hear, he cried, methought, The sweet
• 1:22:50
Speaker 2: music of a fairy's silver voice rang from yonder bower.
• 1:22:56
Speaker 2: Strange worthy, prince, said Polynesia, keeping very still, So Bumpo
• 1:23:03
Speaker 2: couldn't see her. Thou sayest winked worst of truth for
• 1:23:10
Speaker 2: teast I Trimsitinka, the queen of the fairies that speak
• 1:23:17
Speaker 2: to thee. I am hiding in a rosebud. Oh tell me,
• 1:23:24
Speaker 2: fairy queen, cried Bumpo, clasping his hands in joy. Who
• 1:23:30
Speaker 2: is it can turn me white? In thy father's prison,
• 1:23:37
Speaker 2: said the parrot. There lies a famous wizard, John Dolittle
• 1:23:42
Speaker 2: by name. Many things he knows of medicine and magic,
• 1:23:48
Speaker 2: and mighty deeds has he performed? Yet thy kindly father
• 1:23:54
Speaker 2: leaves him languishing long and lingering hours. Go to him,
• 1:24:01
Speaker 2: brave Bumpo, secretly when the sun has set, and behold,
• 1:24:07
Speaker 2: thou shalt be made the whitest prince that ever won.
• 1:24:12
Speaker 2: Fair lady, I have said enough and must go back
• 1:24:16
Speaker 2: to fairyland. Farewell, farewell, cried the prince. A thousand thanks
• 1:24:25
Speaker 2: good Tripsitinka, and he sat down on the seat again
• 1:24:30
Speaker 2: with a smile upon his face, waiting for the sun
• 1:24:33
Speaker 2: to set. End of the eleventh chapter. The twelfth chapter
• 1:24:42
Speaker 2: titled Medicine and Magic, very very quietly, making sure that
• 1:24:50
Speaker 2: no one should sit her, Polynesia then slipped out at
• 1:24:54
Speaker 2: the back of the tree and flew across to the prison.
• 1:24:58
Speaker 2: She found gub Gub poking his nose through the bars
• 1:25:02
Speaker 2: of the window, trying to sniff the cooking smells that
• 1:25:06
Speaker 2: came from the palace kitchen. She told the pig to
• 1:25:10
Speaker 2: bring the doctor to the window because she wanted to
• 1:25:13
Speaker 2: speak to him. So gub Gub went and woke the doctor,
• 1:25:18
Speaker 2: who was taking a nap. Listen, whispered the parrot when
• 1:25:23
Speaker 2: John Dolittle's face appeared. Prince Bumpo is coming here tonight
• 1:25:28
Speaker 2: to see you, and you've got to find some way
• 1:25:32
Speaker 2: to turn him white. But be sure to make him
• 1:25:35
Speaker 2: promise you first that he will open the prison door
• 1:25:39
Speaker 2: and find a ship for you to cross the sea in.
• 1:25:44
Speaker 2: This is all very well, said the doctor, But it
• 1:25:48
Speaker 2: isn't so easy to turn a black man white. You
• 1:25:52
Speaker 2: speak as though he were dressed to be redyed. It
• 1:25:56
Speaker 2: is not so simple. Shall the leper change his or
• 1:26:01
Speaker 2: he opened his skin? You know, I don't know anything
• 1:26:06
Speaker 2: about that, said Polynesia impatiently. But you must turn these
• 1:26:12
Speaker 2: men white. Think of a way, think hard. You've got
• 1:26:17
Speaker 2: plenty of medicines left in the bag. He'll do anything
• 1:26:21
Speaker 2: for you if you change his color. It is your
• 1:26:24
Speaker 2: only chance to get out of prison. Well, I suppose
• 1:26:30
Speaker 2: it might be possible, said the doctor. Let me see,
• 1:26:35
Speaker 2: and he went over to his medicine bag, murmuring something
• 1:26:39
Speaker 2: about liberated chlorine on animal pigment. Perhaps sinkd oint meant
• 1:26:45
Speaker 2: as temporary measure spread thick. Well, that night, Prince Bumpo
• 1:26:52
Speaker 2: came secretly to the doctor in prison and said to him,
• 1:26:58
Speaker 2: white man, I am unhappy prince. Years ago I went
• 1:27:04
Speaker 2: in search of the Sleeping Beauty, whom I have read
• 1:27:07
Speaker 2: of in a book, And having traveled through the world
• 1:27:11
Speaker 2: many days, I at last found her and kissed her
• 1:27:15
Speaker 2: the lady very gently to awaken her, as the book said.
• 1:27:20
Speaker 2: I should tis true, indeed that she awoke. But when
• 1:27:24
Speaker 2: she saw my face she cried out, oh he's black,
• 1:27:29
Speaker 2: and she ran away and wouldn't marry me, but went
• 1:27:33
Speaker 2: to sleep again somewhere else. So I came back, full
• 1:27:38
Speaker 2: of sadness, to my father's kingdom. Now I hear you
• 1:27:43
Speaker 2: are a wonderful magician and have some powerful potions. So
• 1:27:48
Speaker 2: I come to you for help. If you will turn
• 1:27:51
Speaker 2: me white so that I may go back to the
• 1:27:54
Speaker 2: sleeping Beauty, I will give you half my kingdom and
• 1:27:58
Speaker 2: anything besides you, ask Prince Bumpo, said the doctor, looking
• 1:28:04
Speaker 2: thoughtfully at the bottles in his medicine bag. Supposing I
• 1:28:10
Speaker 2: made your hair a nice blonde color, would not that
• 1:28:14
Speaker 2: do instead? To make you happy? No, said Bumpo. Nothing
• 1:28:20
Speaker 2: else will satisfy me. I must be a white prince.
• 1:28:26
Speaker 2: You know it is very hard to change the color
• 1:28:29
Speaker 2: of a prince, said the doctor, one of the hardest
• 1:28:33
Speaker 2: things a magician can do. You only want your face white,
• 1:28:38
Speaker 2: do you not? Yes, that is all, said Bumpo, Because
• 1:28:43
Speaker 2: I shall wear shiny armor and gauntlets of steel like
• 1:28:48
Speaker 2: the other white princes, and ride on a horse. Must
• 1:28:53
Speaker 2: your phrase be white all over? Asked the doctor. Yes,
• 1:28:57
Speaker 2: all over, said Bumpo. And I would like my eyes
• 1:29:01
Speaker 2: blue too, But I suppose that would be very hard
• 1:29:05
Speaker 2: to do. Yes, it would, said the doctor quickly. Well,
• 1:29:10
Speaker 2: I will do what I can for you. You will
• 1:29:13
Speaker 2: have to be very patient, though, you know with some
• 1:29:16
Speaker 2: medicines you can never be very sure. I might have
• 1:29:21
Speaker 2: to try two or three times. You have a strong skin. Yes,
• 1:29:26
Speaker 2: well that's all right. Now come over here by the light. Oh,
• 1:29:31
Speaker 2: but before I do anything, you must first go down
• 1:29:35
Speaker 2: to the beach. And get a ship ready with food
• 1:29:38
Speaker 2: in it to take me across the sea. Do not
• 1:29:42
Speaker 2: speak a word of this to anyone. And when I
• 1:29:45
Speaker 2: have done as you ask, you must let me and
• 1:29:49
Speaker 2: all my animals out of prisons. Promise by the Crown
• 1:29:54
Speaker 2: of Jolliginki. So the prince promised and went away to
• 1:30:00
Speaker 2: get the ship ready at the seashore. When he came
• 1:30:05
Speaker 2: back and said that it was done, the doctor asked
• 1:30:09
Speaker 2: dab Dab to bring a basin. Then he mixed a
• 1:30:14
Speaker 2: lot of medicines in the basin and told Bumpo to
• 1:30:18
Speaker 2: dip his face in it. The prince leaned down and
• 1:30:23
Speaker 2: put his face in right up to the ears. He
• 1:30:27
Speaker 2: held it there a long time, so long that the
• 1:30:31
Speaker 2: doctor seemed to get dreadfully anxious and fidgety, standing first
• 1:30:37
Speaker 2: on one leg and then on the other, looking at
• 1:30:41
Speaker 2: all the bottles he had used for the mixture, and
• 1:30:44
Speaker 2: reading the labels on them again and again. A strong
• 1:30:48
Speaker 2: smell filled the prison, like the smell of brown paper burning.
• 1:30:53
Speaker 2: At last, the prince lifted his face up out of
• 1:30:57
Speaker 2: the basin, breathing very hard, and all the animals cried
• 1:31:02
Speaker 2: out in surprise, for the Prince's face had turned as
• 1:31:08
Speaker 2: white as snow, and his eyes, which had been mud colored,
• 1:31:13
Speaker 2: were a manly gray. When John Doolittle lent him a
• 1:31:18
Speaker 2: little looking glass to see himself in, he sang for
• 1:31:22
Speaker 2: joy and began dancing around the prison. But the doctor
• 1:31:27
Speaker 2: asked him not to make so much noise about it,
• 1:31:31
Speaker 2: and when he had closed his medicine bag in hurry,
• 1:31:35
Speaker 2: he told him to open the prison door. Bumbo begged
• 1:31:39
Speaker 2: that he might keep the looking glass, as it was
• 1:31:42
Speaker 2: the only one in the Kingdom of Jolliginki, and he
• 1:31:47
Speaker 2: wanted to look at himself all day long, but the
• 1:31:51
Speaker 2: doctor said he needed it to shave with. Then the Prince,
• 1:31:56
Speaker 2: taking a bunch of copper keys from his pocket, undid
• 1:32:01
Speaker 2: the great double locks, and the doctor with all his animals,
• 1:32:06
Speaker 2: ran as fast as they could down to the seashore,
• 1:32:09
Speaker 2: while Bumpo leaned against the wall of the empty dungeon,
• 1:32:14
Speaker 2: smiling after them happily, his big face shining like polished
• 1:32:20
Speaker 2: ivory in the light of the moon. When they came
• 1:32:24
Speaker 2: to the beach, they saw Polynesia and Chee Chee waiting
• 1:32:28
Speaker 2: for them on the rocks near the ship. I feel
• 1:32:33
Speaker 2: sorry about Bumpo, said the doctor. I am afraid that
• 1:32:38
Speaker 2: medicine I used will never last. Most likely he will
• 1:32:43
Speaker 2: be as black as ever when he wakes up in
• 1:32:46
Speaker 2: the morning. That's one reason why I didn't like to
• 1:32:49
Speaker 2: leave the mirror with him. But then again, he might
• 1:32:53
Speaker 2: stay white. I have never used that mixture before, to
• 1:32:58
Speaker 2: tell the truth, I was surprised myself that it worked
• 1:33:02
Speaker 2: so well. But I had to do something, didn't I.
• 1:33:06
Speaker 2: I couldn't possibly scrub the King's kitchen for the rest
• 1:33:09
Speaker 2: of my life. It was such a dirty kitchen. I
• 1:33:13
Speaker 2: could see it from the prison window. Well, well, poor Bumpo,
• 1:33:19
Speaker 2: Oh of course he will know. We were just joking
• 1:33:23
Speaker 2: with him, said the parrot. They had no business to
• 1:33:27
Speaker 2: lock us up, said Dab Dab, waggling her tail angrily.
• 1:33:31
Speaker 2: We never did them any harm. Serve him right. If
• 1:33:36
Speaker 2: he does turn black again, I hope it's a dark black.
• 1:33:40
Speaker 2: But he didn't have anything to do with it, said
• 1:33:43
Speaker 2: the doctor. It was the King, his father, who had
• 1:33:47
Speaker 2: us locked up. It wasn't Bumpo's fault. I wonder if
• 1:33:53
Speaker 2: I ought to go back and apologize. Oh well, I'll
• 1:33:57
Speaker 2: send him some candy when we get to paddle by.
• 1:34:01
Speaker 2: And who knows, he may stay white. After all, the
• 1:34:05
Speaker 2: sleeping beauty would never have him, even if he did,
• 1:34:09
Speaker 2: said dab Dab. He looked better the way he was,
• 1:34:12
Speaker 2: I thought, But he'd never be anything but ugly no
• 1:34:17
Speaker 2: matter what color he was made. Still he had a
• 1:34:21
Speaker 2: good heart, said the doctor. Romantic, of course, but a
• 1:34:26
Speaker 2: good heart, after all, handsome is as handsome does. I
• 1:34:32
Speaker 2: don't believe the poor booby found the sleeping beauty at all,
• 1:34:36
Speaker 2: said Jip the dog. Most likely he kissed some farmer's
• 1:34:42
Speaker 2: fat wife who was taking a snooze under an apple tree.
• 1:34:47
Speaker 2: Can't blame her for getting scared. I wonder who he'll
• 1:34:51
Speaker 2: go and kiss this time. Silly business. Then the Pushmi Pullyu,
• 1:34:58
Speaker 2: the white mouse, gob gob dab Dab, Jip and the
• 1:35:03
Speaker 2: owl too too went onto the ship with the doctor.
• 1:35:08
Speaker 2: But Chee Chee Polynesia and the crocodile stayed behind because
• 1:35:14
Speaker 2: Africa was their proper home, the land where they were born.
• 1:35:20
Speaker 2: And when the Doctor stood upon the boat, he looked
• 1:35:24
Speaker 2: over the side across the water, and then he remembered
• 1:35:29
Speaker 2: that they had no one with them to guide them
• 1:35:31
Speaker 2: back to paddle by. The white white sea looked terribly
• 1:35:37
Speaker 2: big and lonesome in the moonlight, and he began to
• 1:35:41
Speaker 2: wonder if they would lose their way when they passed
• 1:35:45
Speaker 2: out of sight of land. But even while he was wondering,
• 1:35:50
Speaker 2: they heard a strange whispering noise high in the air,
• 1:35:55
Speaker 2: coming through the night, and the animals all stopped saying goodbye, eye,
• 1:36:00
Speaker 2: and listened. The noise grew louder and bigger. It seemed
• 1:36:05
Speaker 2: to be coming nearer to them, a sound like the
• 1:36:09
Speaker 2: autumn wind blowing through the leaves of a popular tree,
• 1:36:14
Speaker 2: or a great, great rain beating down upon a roof.
• 1:36:18
Speaker 2: And Jip, with his nose pointing and his tail quite straight,
• 1:36:22
Speaker 2: said birds. Millions of them, flying fast, that's it. And
• 1:36:30
Speaker 2: then they all looked up, and there, streaming across the
• 1:36:35
Speaker 2: face of the moon, like huge swarm of tiny ants,
• 1:36:40
Speaker 2: they could see thousands and thousands of little birds. Soon
• 1:36:45
Speaker 2: the whole skies seemed full of them, and still more
• 1:36:49
  Speaker 2: kept coming.
• 1:36:50
  Speaker 9: More and more.
• 1:36:52
Speaker 2: There were so many that for a little they covered
• 1:36:55
Speaker 2: the whole moon, so he could not shine, and the
• 1:36:59
Speaker 2: sea grew dark and black, like when a storm cloud
• 1:37:04
Speaker 2: passes over the sun. And presently all these birds came
• 1:37:08
Speaker 2: down close, skimming over the water and the land, and
• 1:37:13
Speaker 2: the night sky was left clear above, and the moon
• 1:37:17
Speaker 2: shone as before still, never a call, nor a cry,
• 1:37:21
Speaker 2: nor a song. They made no sound but this great
• 1:37:26
Speaker 2: rustling of feathers, which grew greater now than ever. When
• 1:37:32
Speaker 2: they began to settle on the sands along the ropes
• 1:37:35
Speaker 2: of the ship, anywhere and everywhere except the trees, the
• 1:37:40
Speaker 2: doctor could see that they had blue wings, and white breasts,
• 1:37:45
Speaker 2: and very short feather legs. As soon as they had
• 1:37:51
Speaker 2: all found a place to sit, suddenly there was no
• 1:37:55
Speaker 2: noise left anywhere. All was quiet, all was still, and
• 1:38:02
Speaker 2: in the silent moonlight, John Dolittle spoke, I had no
• 1:38:07
Speaker 2: idea that we had been in Africa so long. It
• 1:38:11
Speaker 2: will be nearly summer when we get home. For these
• 1:38:14
Speaker 2: are the swallows going back swallows. I thank you for
• 1:38:19
Speaker 2: waiting for us. It is very thoughtful of you. Now
• 1:38:23
Speaker 2: we need not be afraid that we will lose our
• 1:38:27
Speaker 2: way upon the sea. Pull up the anchor and set
• 1:38:31
Speaker 2: the sail. When the ship moved out upon the water,
• 1:38:36
Speaker 2: those who stayed behind Chee Chee, Polynesia and the crocodile
• 1:38:41
Speaker 2: grew terribly sad, for never in their lives had they
• 1:38:45
Speaker 2: known anyone they liked so well as doctor John Dolittle
• 1:38:50
Speaker 2: of paddle By on the marsh. And after they had
• 1:38:54
Speaker 2: called good bye to him again and again and again,
• 1:38:58
Speaker 2: they still stood there upon the rocks, crying bitterly and
• 1:39:03
Speaker 2: waving till the ship was out of sight end of
• 1:39:08
Speaker 2: the twelfth chapter. The thirteenth chapter titled Red Sails and
• 1:39:15
Speaker 2: Blue Wings. Sailing homeward, the doctor's ship had to pass
• 1:39:21
Speaker 2: the coast of Barbary. This coast is the seashore of
• 1:39:26
Speaker 2: the Great Desert. It is a wild, lonely place, all
• 1:39:30
Speaker 2: sand and stones, and it was here that the Barbary
• 1:39:34
Speaker 2: pirates lived. These pirates, a bad lot of men, used
• 1:39:40
Speaker 2: to wait for sailors to be shipwrecked on their shores,
• 1:39:44
Speaker 2: and often if they saw a boat passing, they would
• 1:39:47
Speaker 2: come out in their fast sailing ships and chase it.
• 1:39:52
Speaker 2: When they caught a boat like this at sea, they
• 1:39:56
Speaker 2: would steal everything on it, and after they had taking
• 1:40:00
Speaker 2: the people off, they would sink the ship and sail
• 1:40:04
Speaker 2: back to Barbary, singing songs and feeling proud of the
• 1:40:08
Speaker 2: mischief they had done. Then they used to make the
• 1:40:12
Speaker 2: people they had caught write home to their friends for money,
• 1:40:17
Speaker 2: and if the friends sent no money. The pirates often
• 1:40:21
Speaker 2: threw the people into the sea. Now, one sunshiny day,
• 1:40:26
Speaker 2: the doctor and dab Dab were walking up and down
• 1:40:29
Speaker 2: on the ship for exercise. A nice fresh wind was
• 1:40:34
Speaker 2: blowing the boat alone, and everybody was happy. Presently, dab
• 1:40:39
Speaker 2: Dab saw the sail of another ship a long way
• 1:40:42
Speaker 2: behind them, on the edge of the sea. It was
• 1:40:45
Speaker 2: a red sail. I don't like the look of that sail,
• 1:40:50
  Speaker 2: said dab Dab. I have a feeling it isn't a
• 1:40:54
Speaker 2: friendly ship. I am afraid there is more trouble coming
• 1:40:57
Speaker 2: to us. Jip, who was lying near taking a nap
• 1:41:03
Speaker 2: in the sun, began to growl and talk in his sleep.
• 1:41:08
Speaker 2: I smell roast beef cooking, he mumbled. Underdone roast beef
• 1:41:14
Speaker 2: with brown gravy over it. Good gracious, cried the doctor.
• 1:41:20
Speaker 2: What's the matter with the dog? Is he smelling in
• 1:41:24
Speaker 2: his sleep as well as talking? I suppose he is,
• 1:41:28
Speaker 2: said dab Dab. All dogs can smell in their sleep.
• 1:41:34
Speaker 2: But what is he smelling? Asked the doctor. There is
• 1:41:39
Speaker 2: no roast beef cooking on our ship, No, said dab Dab.
• 1:41:43
Speaker 2: The roast beef must be on that other ship over there.
• 1:41:48
Speaker 2: That's ten miles away, said the doctor. He couldn't smell
• 1:41:53
Speaker 2: that far, surely, Oh yes he could, said Dab Dab.
• 1:41:58
Speaker 2: You ask him. Then Jip, still fast asleep, began to
• 1:42:03
Speaker 2: growl again, and his lip curled up angrily, showing his
• 1:42:08
Speaker 2: clean white teeth. I smell bad men, he growled, the
• 1:42:15
Speaker 2: worst man I ever smelt. I smell trouble. I smell
• 1:42:20
Speaker 2: a fight, Six bad scoundrels fighting against one brave man.
• 1:42:27
Speaker 2: I want to help him. Woof, woof, woof. Then he
• 1:42:32
Speaker 2: barked loud and woke himself up, with a surprised look
• 1:42:36
Speaker 2: on his face. See, cried Dab Dab. That boat is nearer.
• 1:42:42
Speaker 2: Now you can count its three big sails, all red.
• 1:42:48
Speaker 2: Whoever it is they are coming after us. I wonder
• 1:42:52
Speaker 2: who they are. They are bad sailors, said Jip. And
• 1:42:56
Speaker 2: their ship is very swift, surely the pirates of Barbary.
• 1:43:03
Speaker 2: Well we must put up more sails on our boat,
• 1:43:07
Speaker 2: said the doctor, so we can go faster and get
• 1:43:11
Speaker 2: away from them. Run downstairs, Tip, and fetch me all
• 1:43:15
Speaker 2: the sails, you see. The dog hurried downstairs and dragged
• 1:43:21
Speaker 2: up every sail he could find. But even when all
• 1:43:25
Speaker 2: these were put up on the mast to catch the wind.
• 1:43:30
Speaker 2: The boat did not go nearly as fast as the pirates,
• 1:43:35
Speaker 2: which kept coming on behind, closer and closer. This is
• 1:43:41
Speaker 2: a poor ship, the prince gave us, said, gub the
• 1:43:44
Speaker 2: pig the slowest he could find. I should think might
• 1:43:49
Speaker 2: as well try to win a race in a soup
• 1:43:52
Speaker 2: tureen as hoped to get away from them in this
• 1:43:56
Speaker 2: old barge. Look how near they are now. You can
• 1:44:01
Speaker 2: see the mustaches on the faces of the men, six
• 1:44:05
Speaker 2: of them. What are we going to do? Then? The
• 1:44:08
Speaker 2: doctor asked Dab Dab to fly up and tell the
• 1:44:12
Speaker 2: swallows that pirates were coming after them in a swift ship,
• 1:44:17
Speaker 2: and what should he do about it. When the swallows
• 1:44:21
Speaker 2: heard this, they all came down onto the doctor's ship,
• 1:44:25
Speaker 2: and they told him to unravel some pieces of long
• 1:44:29
Speaker 2: rope and make them into a lot of thin strings
• 1:44:33
Speaker 2: as quickly as he could. Then the ends of these
• 1:44:38
Speaker 2: strings were tied onto the front of the ship, and
• 1:44:42
Speaker 2: the swallows took hold of the strings with their feet
• 1:44:46
Speaker 2: and flew off, pulling the boat along. And although swallows
• 1:44:52
Speaker 2: are not very strong when only one or two are
• 1:44:55
Speaker 2: by themselves, it is different when there are a great
• 1:44:59
Speaker 2: laws of them together, and there tied to the doctor's
• 1:45:04
Speaker 2: ship were a thousand strings, and two thousand swallows were
• 1:45:10
Speaker 2: pulling on each string, all terribly swift fliers. And in
• 1:45:16
Speaker 2: a moment the Doctor found himself traveling so fast he
• 1:45:21
Speaker 2: had to hold his hat on with both hands, for
• 1:45:25
Speaker 2: he felt as though the ship itself were flying through
• 1:45:30
Speaker 2: waves that frouded and boiled with speed. And all the
• 1:45:34
Speaker 2: animals on the ship began to laugh and dance about
• 1:45:38
Speaker 2: in the rushing air, for when they looked back at
• 1:45:42
Speaker 2: the pirate ship, they could see that it was growing
• 1:45:45
Speaker 2: smaller now instead of bigger. The red sails were being
• 1:45:51
Speaker 2: left far far behind. End of the thirteenth chapter. The
• 1:45:58
Speaker 2: fourteenth top titled the Rats warning. Dragging a ship through
• 1:46:07
Speaker 2: the sea is hard work. And after two or three hours,
• 1:46:11
Speaker 2: the swallows began to get tired in the wings and
• 1:46:15
Speaker 2: short of breath. Then they sent a message down to
• 1:46:19
Speaker 2: the Doctor to say that they would have to take
• 1:46:21
Speaker 2: a rest soon, and that they would pull the boat
• 1:46:26
Speaker 2: over to an island not far off and hide it
• 1:46:30
Speaker 2: in a deep bay till they had got breath enough
• 1:46:33
Speaker 2: to go on. And presently the Doctor saw the island
• 1:46:38
Speaker 2: they had spoken of, it had a very beautiful, high
• 1:46:43
Speaker 2: green mountain in the middle of it. When the ship
• 1:46:48
Speaker 2: had sailed safety into the bay, where it could not
• 1:46:51
Speaker 2: be seen from the open sea, the doctor said he
• 1:46:55
Speaker 2: would get off on to the island to look for water,
• 1:46:58
Speaker 2: because there was none left to drink on his ship,
• 1:47:03
Speaker 2: and he told all the animals to get out too,
• 1:47:07
Speaker 2: and romp on the grass to stretch their legs. Now.
• 1:47:12
Speaker 2: As they were getting off, the doctor noticed that a
• 1:47:15
Speaker 2: whole lot of rats were coming up from downstairs and
• 1:47:19
Speaker 2: leaving the sheep as well. Jip started to run after them,
• 1:47:25
Speaker 2: because chasing rats have always been his favorite game, but
• 1:47:30
Speaker 2: the doctor told him to stop. And one big black rat,
• 1:47:36
Speaker 2: who seemed to want to say something to the doctor
• 1:47:40
Speaker 2: now crept forward timidly along the rail, watching the dog
• 1:47:44
Speaker 2: out of the corner of his eye. And after he
• 1:47:48
Speaker 2: had coughed nervously two or three times, and cleaned his
• 1:47:52
Speaker 2: whiskers and wiped his mouth, he said, am uh, you
• 1:47:58
Speaker 2: know of course that all ships have ratten them, doctor,
• 1:48:02
Speaker 2: do you not? And the doctor said yes, And you
• 1:48:08
Speaker 2: have heard that rats always leave a sinking ship. Yes,
• 1:48:13
Speaker 2: said the doctor, so I've been told people said the
• 1:48:18
Speaker 2: rat always speak of it with a sneer, as though
• 1:48:23
Speaker 2: it were something disgraceful. But you can't blame us, can you.
• 1:48:29
Speaker 2: After all, who would stay on a sinking ship if
• 1:48:33
Speaker 2: he could get off it? It's very natural, said the doctor.
• 1:48:39
Speaker 2: Very natural, I quite understand. Was there was there anything
• 1:48:45
Speaker 2: else you wished to say? Yes, said the rat. I've
• 1:48:50
Speaker 2: come to tell you that we are leaving this one,
• 1:48:53
Speaker 2: but we wanted to warn you before we go. This
• 1:48:57
Speaker 2: is a bad ship you have here. It isn't safe.
• 1:49:01
Speaker 2: The sides aren't strong enough, its boards are rotten. Before
• 1:49:06
Speaker 2: tomorrow night, it will sink to the bottom of the sea.
• 1:49:11
Speaker 2: But how do you know, asked the doctor. We always know,
• 1:49:16
Speaker 2: answered the rat. The tips of our tails get that
• 1:49:20
Speaker 2: tingly feeling, like when your foot's asleep. This morning, at
• 1:49:25
Speaker 2: six o'clock, while I was getting breakfast, my tail suddenly
• 1:49:29
Speaker 2: began to tingle. At first I thought it was my
• 1:49:33
Speaker 2: rheumatism coming back. So I went and asked my aunt
• 1:49:37
Speaker 2: how she felt. You remember her, the long teabald red
• 1:49:42
Speaker 2: rather skinny, who came to see you in paddle By
• 1:49:46
Speaker 2: last spring with jaundice. Well, and she said her tail
• 1:49:52
Speaker 2: was tingling like everything. Then we knew for sure that
• 1:49:56
Speaker 2: this boat was going to sink in less than two days,
• 1:50:01
Speaker 2: and we all made up our minds to leave it
• 1:50:03
Speaker 2: as soon as we got near enough to any land.
• 1:50:07
Speaker 2: It's a bad ship, doctor, Don't sail in it anymore,
• 1:50:11
Speaker 2: or you'll be surely drowned. Goodbye. We are now going
• 1:50:16
Speaker 2: to look for a good place to live on this island. Goodbye,
• 1:50:20
Speaker 2: said the doctor. And thank you very much for coming
• 1:50:23
Speaker 2: to tell me. Very considerate of you. Very give my
• 1:50:28
Speaker 2: regards to your aunt. I remember her perfectly. Leave that
• 1:50:33
Speaker 2: rat alone, Jip, come here, lie down. So then the
• 1:50:39
Speaker 2: doctor and all his animals went off, carrying pails and
• 1:50:43
Speaker 2: saucepans to look for water on the island, while the
• 1:50:47
Speaker 2: swallows took their rest. I wonder what is the name
• 1:50:52
Speaker 2: of this island, said the doctor, as he was climbing
• 1:50:55
Speaker 2: up the mountainside. It seems a pleasant place. What a
• 1:51:01
Speaker 2: lot of birds there are? Why these are the canary islands,
• 1:51:07
Speaker 2: said Dab dab. Don't you hear the canaries singing? The
• 1:51:11
Speaker 2: doctor stopped and listened. Why to be sure, of course,
• 1:51:17
Speaker 2: he said, how stupid of me? I wonder if they
• 1:51:21
Speaker 2: can tell us where to find water? And presently the
• 1:51:26
Speaker 2: canaries who had heard all about doctor Dolittle from Birds
• 1:51:30
Speaker 2: of Passage, came and led him to a beautiful spring
• 1:51:35
Speaker 2: of cool clear water where the canaries used to take
• 1:51:39
Speaker 2: their bath, And they showed him lovely meadows where the
• 1:51:44
Speaker 2: bird's seed grew on all the other sides of their island.
• 1:51:50
Speaker 2: And the Pushmi Pullyu was glad they had come, because
• 1:51:54
Speaker 2: he liked the green grass so much better than the
• 1:51:58
Speaker 2: dried apples he had been eating on the ship, and
• 1:52:02
Speaker 2: gub gub squeak for joy when he found a whole
• 1:52:06
Speaker 2: valley full of wild sugarcane. A little later, when they
• 1:52:12
Speaker 2: had all had plenty to eat and drink, and were
• 1:52:15
Speaker 2: lying on their backs while the canaries sank for them,
• 1:52:19
Speaker 2: two of the swallows came hurrying up, very flustered and excited. Doctor.
• 1:52:27
Speaker 2: They cried, the pirates have come into the bay and
• 1:52:32
Speaker 2: they've all got onto your ship. They are downstairs looking
• 1:52:37
Speaker 2: for things to steal. They have left their own ship
• 1:52:41
Speaker 2: with nobody in it. If you hurry and come down
• 1:52:44
Speaker 2: to the shore, you can get onto their ship, which
• 1:52:47
Speaker 2: is very fast escape. But you'll have to hurry. That's
• 1:52:52
Speaker 2: a good idea, said the doctor splendid, and he called
• 1:52:58
Speaker 2: his animals to get there at once, said goodbye to
• 1:53:02
Speaker 2: the canaries, and ran down to the beach. When they
• 1:53:06
Speaker 2: reached the shore, they saw the pirate ship with the
• 1:53:10
Speaker 2: three red sails, standing in the water, and just as
• 1:53:15
Speaker 2: the swallows had said, there was nobody on it. All
• 1:53:20
Speaker 2: the pirates were downstairs in the doctor's ship looking for
• 1:53:24
Speaker 2: things to steal. So John Doolittle told his animals to
• 1:53:29
Speaker 2: walk very softly, and they all crept on to the
• 1:53:33
Speaker 2: pirate ship. End of the fourteenth chapter. The fifteenth chapter
• 1:53:41
Speaker 2: titled the Barbary Dragon. Everything would have gone all right
• 1:53:49
Speaker 2: if the pig had not caught a cold in his
• 1:53:51
Speaker 2: head while eating the damp sugarcane on the island. This
• 1:53:56
Speaker 2: is what happened. After they had pulled up the anchor
• 1:54:00
Speaker 2: without a sound and were moving the ship very very
• 1:54:04
Speaker 2: carefully out of the bay, Gub Gub suddenly sneezed so
• 1:54:09
Speaker 2: loud that the pirates on the other ship came rushing
• 1:54:14
Speaker 2: upstairs to see what the noise was. As soon as
• 1:54:19
Speaker 2: they saw the doctor was escaping, they sailed the other
• 1:54:23
Speaker 2: boat right across the entrance to the bay so that
• 1:54:27
Speaker 2: the doctor could not get out into the open sea.
• 1:54:31
Speaker 2: Then the leader of these batmen, who called himself ben Ali.
• 1:54:36
Speaker 2: The Dragon, shook his fist up the doctor and shouted
• 1:54:41
Speaker 2: across the water. Ha ha, you are caught, my fine friend.
• 1:54:47
Speaker 2: You were going to run off in my ship. Huh.
• 1:54:50
Speaker 2: But you are not a good enough sailor to beat
• 1:54:54
Speaker 2: ben Ali the barbary Dragon. I want that doc, you, God,
• 1:54:59
Speaker 2: and the too. We'll have pork chops and roast duck
• 1:55:03
Speaker 2: for supper to night. And before I let you go home,
• 1:55:07
Speaker 2: you must make your friends send me a trunk full
• 1:55:10
Speaker 2: of gold. Poor God. God began to weep, and that
• 1:55:16
Speaker 2: that maid ready to fly to save her life. But
• 1:55:20
Speaker 2: the owl, too, too, whispered to the doctor. Keep him talking, Doctor,
• 1:55:26
Speaker 2: be pleasant to him. Our old sheep is bound to
• 1:55:30
Speaker 2: sink soon, the rats said. It would be at the
• 1:55:34
Speaker 2: bottom of the sea before tomorrow night. And the rats
• 1:55:38
Speaker 2: are never wrong. Be pleasant till the ship sinks under him.
• 1:55:44
Speaker 2: Keep him talking? What until tomorrow night? Said the doctor. Well,
• 1:55:52
Speaker 2: I'll do my best. Let me see what shall I
• 1:55:55
  Speaker 2: talk about?
• 1:55:57
  Speaker 11: Oh?
• 1:55:58
Speaker 2: Let them come on, said Jip. We can fight the
• 1:56:02
Speaker 2: dirty rascals. There are only six of them. Let them
• 1:56:06
Speaker 2: come on. I'd love to tell that Collie next door
• 1:56:10
Speaker 2: when we get home that I had beaten a real pirate.
• 1:56:14
Speaker 2: Let them come. We can fight them. But they have
• 1:56:18
Speaker 2: pistols and swords, said the doctor. No, thou would never do.
• 1:56:24
Speaker 2: I must talk to him. Look here, ben Ali. But
• 1:56:29
Speaker 2: before the doctor could say any more, the pirates began
• 1:56:34
Speaker 2: to sail the ship nearer, laughing with glee and saying
• 1:56:38
Speaker 2: one to another, who shall be the first to catch
• 1:56:42
Speaker 2: the pig. Poor gub Gub was dreadfully frightened, and the
• 1:56:48
Speaker 2: Pushmi Pullyu began to sharpen his horns for a fight
• 1:56:52
Speaker 2: by rubbing them on the mast of the ship, while
• 1:56:55
Speaker 2: Jip kept springing into the air and barking and calling
• 1:57:00
Speaker 2: ben Ali bad names in dog language. But presently something
• 1:57:05
Speaker 2: seemed to go wrong with the pirates. They stopped laughing
• 1:57:10
Speaker 2: and cracking jokes. They looked puzzled. Something was making them uneasy.
• 1:57:16
Speaker 2: Then ben Ali, staring down at his feet, suddenly below
• 1:57:21
Speaker 2: doubt thunder and lightning, men the boats leaking. And then
• 1:57:29
Speaker 2: the other pirates peered over the side, and they saw
• 1:57:33
Speaker 2: that the boat was indeed getting lower and lower in
• 1:57:37
Speaker 2: the water. And one of them said to ben Ali,
• 1:57:42
Speaker 2: but surely if this old boat were sinking. We should
• 1:57:46
Speaker 2: see the rats live in it, And Jip shouted across
• 1:57:51
Speaker 2: from the other ship, you great duffers, there are no
• 1:57:55
Speaker 2: rats there to leave. They left two hours ago. Aha
• 1:58:00
Speaker 2: to you, my fine friends. But of course the men
• 1:58:06
Speaker 2: did not understand him. Soon the front end of the
• 1:58:10
Speaker 2: ship began to go down and down, faster and faster,
• 1:58:15
Speaker 2: till the boat looked almost as though it were standing
• 1:58:20
Speaker 2: on its head, and the pirates had to cling to
• 1:58:23
Speaker 2: the rails and the masts and the ropes and anything
• 1:58:27
Speaker 2: to keep from sliding off. Then the sea rushed, roaring
• 1:58:32
Speaker 2: in and through all the windows and the doors, and
• 1:58:37
Speaker 2: at last the ship plunged right down to the bottom
• 1:58:41
Speaker 2: of the sea, making a dreadful gurgling sound, and the
• 1:58:46
Speaker 2: six bad men were left bobbing about in the deep
• 1:58:50
Speaker 2: water of the bay. Some of them started to swim
• 1:58:55
Speaker 2: for the shores of the island, while others came and
• 1:58:59
Speaker 2: tried to get on the boat where the doctor was,
• 1:59:02
Speaker 2: But Gyp kept snapping at their noses, so they were
• 1:59:07
Speaker 2: afraid to climb up the side of the ship. Then
• 1:59:11
Speaker 2: suddenly they all cried out in great fear, the sharks,
• 1:59:16
Speaker 2: the sharks are coming. Let us get on the ship
• 1:59:20
Speaker 2: before they eat us. Help help the sharks. The sharks,
• 1:59:26
Speaker 2: and now the doctor could see all over the bay
• 1:59:30
Speaker 2: the back of the big fishes swimming swiftly through the water,
• 1:59:36
Speaker 2: And one great shark came near to the ship, and,
• 1:59:40
Speaker 2: poking his nose out of the water, he said to
• 1:59:43
Speaker 2: the doctor, are you John Doolittle, the famous animal doctor. Yes,
• 1:59:50
Speaker 2: said Doctor Doolittle, that is my name. Well, said the shark.
• 1:59:56
Speaker 2: We know these pirates to be a bad lot. Actually,
• 2:00:00
Speaker 2: ben Ali, if they are annoying you, we will gladly
• 2:00:04
Speaker 2: eat them up for you, and then you won't be
• 2:00:08
Speaker 2: troubled anymore. Thank you, said the doctor. This is really
• 2:00:14
Speaker 2: most attentive, but I don't think it will be necessary
• 2:00:18
Speaker 2: to eat them. Don't let any of them reach the
• 2:00:22
Speaker 2: shore until I tell you. Just keep them swimming about,
• 2:00:25
Speaker 2: will you, And please make ben Ali swim over here,
• 2:00:30
Speaker 2: that I may talk to him. So the shark went
• 2:00:35
Speaker 2: off and chased ben Ali over to the doctor. Listen,
• 2:00:40
Speaker 2: ben Ali, said John Dolittle, lean over the side. You
• 2:00:45
Speaker 2: have been a very bad man, and I understand that
• 2:00:50
Speaker 2: you have killed many people. These good sharks have just
• 2:00:55
Speaker 2: offered to eat you up for me, and it would
• 2:00:59
Speaker 2: indeed be a good thing if the seas were rid
• 2:01:03
Speaker 2: of you. But if you will promise to do as
• 2:01:06
Speaker 2: I tell you, I will let you go in safety.
• 2:01:10
Speaker 2: What must I do, asked the pirate, looking down sideways
• 2:01:14
Speaker 2: at the big short who was smelling his leg under
• 2:01:17
Speaker 2: the water. You must kill no more people, said the doctor.
• 2:01:23
Speaker 2: You must stop stealing, You must never sink another ship.
• 2:01:28
Speaker 2: You must give up being a pirate altogether. But what
• 2:01:32
Speaker 2: shall I do, then, asked ben Ali, how shall I live?
• 2:01:38
Speaker 2: You and all your men must go on to this
• 2:01:41
Speaker 2: island and be bird seed farmers. The doctor answered, you
• 2:01:46
Speaker 2: must grow bird seed for the canaries. The barbary dragon
• 2:01:50
Speaker 2: turned pale with anger. Grow bird seed. He groaned in disgust.
• 2:01:58
Speaker 2: Can't I be a sailor? No, said the doctor, you cannot.
• 2:02:04
Speaker 2: You had been a sailor long enough and sent many
• 2:02:08
Speaker 2: stout ships and good men to the bottom of the sea.
• 2:02:12
Speaker 2: For the rest of your life, you must be a
• 2:02:15
Speaker 2: peaceful farmer. The shark is waiting, Do not waste any
• 2:02:20
Speaker 2: more of his time. Make up your mind. Thunder and lightning,
• 2:02:26
Speaker 2: ben Ali muttered, bear seed. Then he looked down into
• 2:02:31
Speaker 2: the water again and saw the great fish smelling his
• 2:02:35
Speaker 2: other leg very well, he said, sadly, will be farmers.
• 2:02:44
Speaker 2: And remember, said the doctor that if you do not
• 2:02:48
Speaker 2: keep your promise, if you start healing and stealing again,
• 2:02:54
Speaker 2: I shall hear of it, because the canaries will come
• 2:02:58
Speaker 2: and tell me and be I'm very sure that I
• 2:03:01
Speaker 2: will find a way to punish you. For though I
• 2:03:05
Speaker 2: may not be able to sail as ship as well
• 2:03:08
Speaker 2: as you, so long as the birds and the beasts
• 2:03:13
Speaker 2: and the fishes are my friends, I do not have
• 2:03:16
Speaker 2: to be afraid of a pirate chief, even though he
• 2:03:20
Speaker 2: called himself the dragon of Barbary. Now go and be
• 2:03:25
Speaker 2: a good farmer and live in peace. Then the doctor
• 2:03:30
Speaker 2: turned to the big shark, and waving his hand, he said,
• 2:03:34
Speaker 2: all right, let them swim safely to the land. End
• 2:03:40
Speaker 2: of the fifteenth chapter.
• 2:03:43
Speaker 4: The sixteenth chapter titled two to the Listener. Having thanked
• 2:03:50
Speaker 4: the sharks again for their kindness, the doctor and his
• 2:03:53
Speaker 4: pet said off once more on their journey home in
• 2:03:56
Speaker 4: the swift ship with the three red sails. As they
• 2:04:00
Speaker 4: moved out into the open sea, the animals all went
• 2:04:04
Speaker 4: downstairs to see what their new boat was like inside,
• 2:04:07
Speaker 4: while the doctor leaned on the rail at the back
• 2:04:09
Speaker 4: of the ship with a pipe in his mouth, watching
• 2:04:12
Speaker 4: the Canary Islands fade away in the blue dusk of
• 2:04:15
Speaker 4: the evening. While he was standing there wondering how the
• 2:04:20
Speaker 4: monkeys were getting on and what his garden would look like.
• 2:04:23
Speaker 4: When he got back to Puddleby, Dab Dab came tumbling
• 2:04:27
Speaker 4: up the stairs, all smiles and full of news. Doc, Doctor,
• 2:04:32
Speaker 4: she cried, the ship of the Pirates is simply beautiful. Absolutely.
• 2:04:38
Speaker 4: The beats downstairs are made of primrose silk, with hundreds
• 2:04:42
Speaker 4: of big pillows and cushions. There are thick soft carpets
• 2:04:46
Speaker 4: on the floor. The dishes are made of silver, and
• 2:04:50
Speaker 4: there are all sorts of good things to eat and drink,
• 2:04:53
Speaker 4: special things. The larder, well, it's just like a shot,
• 2:04:56
  Speaker 4: that's all.
• 2:04:57
  Speaker 2: You never saw.
• 2:04:58
Speaker 4: Anything like it in your lit wife. Just think, think,
• 2:05:01
Speaker 4: think they kept five different kinds of sardines. Those men
• 2:05:05
Speaker 4: come and look, Oh, we found a little room down
• 2:05:08
Speaker 4: there with the door locked, and we are all crazy
• 2:05:12
Speaker 4: to get in and see what's inside. Jip says it
• 2:05:16
Speaker 4: must be where the pirates kept their treasure. But we
• 2:05:21
Speaker 4: can't open the door. Come down and see if you
• 2:05:25
Speaker 4: can let us in. So the doctor went downstairs and
• 2:05:29
Speaker 4: he saw that it was indeed a beautiful ship. He
• 2:05:32
Speaker 4: found the animals gathered round a little door, all talking
• 2:05:36
Speaker 4: at once, trying to guess what was inside. The doctor
• 2:05:39
Speaker 4: turned the handle, but it wouldn't open. Then they all
• 2:05:43
Speaker 4: started to hunt for the key. They looked under the
• 2:05:46
Speaker 4: mat They looked under all carpets. They looked in all
• 2:05:49
Speaker 4: the cupboards and drawers and lockers in the big chests
• 2:05:53
Speaker 4: in the ship's dining room. They looked everywhere. While they
• 2:05:57
Speaker 4: were doing this, they discovered a lot of new and
• 2:06:00
Speaker 4: wonderful things that the pirates must have stolen from other ships.
• 2:06:04
Speaker 4: Kashmere shawls as thin as cobweb, embroidered with flowers of gold,
• 2:06:10
Speaker 4: jars of fine tobacco from Jamaica, carved ivory boxes full
• 2:06:15
Speaker 4: of Russian tea, an old violin with a string broken
• 2:06:19
Speaker 4: and a picture on the back. A set of big
• 2:06:23
Speaker 4: chess men carved out of coral and amber, a walking
• 2:06:27
Speaker 4: stick which had a sword inside when you pulled the handle.
• 2:06:31
Speaker 4: Six wine glasses with turquoise and silver round the rims,
• 2:06:34
Speaker 4: and a lovely great sugar bowl made of mother of pearl.
• 2:06:39
Speaker 4: But nowhere in the whole boat could they find a
• 2:06:41
Speaker 4: key to fit that lock. So they all came back
• 2:06:44
Speaker 4: to the door, and Jip peered through the keyhole, but
• 2:06:47
Speaker 4: something had been stood against the wall on the inside
• 2:06:51
Speaker 4: and he could see nothing. While they were standing around
• 2:06:55
Speaker 4: wondering what they should do, the owl too too suddenly said,
• 2:07:00
Speaker 4: sh listen, I do believe there's some one in there.
• 2:07:10
Speaker 4: They all kept still a moment. Then the doctor said,
• 2:07:14
Speaker 4: you must be mistaken to too. I don't hear anything.
• 2:07:19
Speaker 4: I'm sure of it, said the owl. Shhh, there it
• 2:07:26
Speaker 4: is again. Don't you hear that? No, I do not,
• 2:07:32
Speaker 4: said the doctor. What kind of a sound is it?
• 2:07:36
Speaker 4: I hear the noise of someone putting his hand in
• 2:07:40
Speaker 4: his pocket, said the owl. But that makes hardly any
• 2:07:45
Speaker 4: sound at all, said the doctor. You couldn't hear that
• 2:07:48
Speaker 4: out here. Pardon me, But I can, said to too.
• 2:07:55
Speaker 4: I tell you there is some one on the other
• 2:07:59
Speaker 4: side of that door putting his hand in his pocket.
• 2:08:04
Speaker 4: Almost everything makes some noise if your ears are only
• 2:08:11
Speaker 4: sharp enough to catch it. Bats can hear a mole
• 2:08:16
Speaker 4: walking in his tunnel under the earth, and they think
• 2:08:20
Speaker 4: they're good hearers. But we olds can tell you using
• 2:08:27
Speaker 4: only one ear the color of a kitten from the
• 2:08:31
Speaker 4: way it winks in the dark. Well, well, said the doctor,
• 2:08:36
Speaker 4: you surprise me. That's very interesting. Listen again and tell
• 2:08:40
Speaker 4: me what he's doing.
• 2:08:41
  Speaker 11: Now.
• 2:08:43
Speaker 4: I'm not sure yet, said to too. If it's a
• 2:08:48
Speaker 4: man at all, maybe it's a woman. Lift me up
• 2:08:55
Speaker 4: and let me listen at the key hole, and I'll
• 2:08:58
Speaker 4: soon tell you. So the doctor lifted the owl up
• 2:09:02
Speaker 4: and held him close to the lock of the door.
• 2:09:05
Speaker 4: After a moment, two too said, Now he's rubbing his
• 2:09:10
Speaker 4: face with his left hand. It's a small hand and
• 2:09:14
Speaker 4: a small face. It might be a woman. No, Now
• 2:09:24
Speaker 4: he pushes his hair back off his forehead. It's a man,
• 2:09:29
Speaker 4: all right. Women sometimes do that, said the doctor. True,
• 2:09:36
Speaker 4: said the owl, but when they do, their long hair
• 2:09:41
Speaker 4: makes quite a different sound. Sh make that fitchty pig.
• 2:09:47
Speaker 4: Keep still, now, all hold your breath a moment so
• 2:09:53
Speaker 4: I can listen. Well, this is very difficult what I
• 2:09:58
Speaker 4: am doing now, and the pesky door is so thick.
• 2:10:04
Speaker 4: Sh everybody quite still, shut your eyes and don't Breathe too, too,
• 2:10:12
Speaker 4: leaned down and listened again, very hard and long. At
• 2:10:16
Speaker 4: last he looked up into the doctor's face and said,
• 2:10:21
Speaker 4: the man in there is unhappy. He weeps. He has
• 2:10:27
Speaker 4: taken care not to blubber or sniffle, lest we should
• 2:10:31
Speaker 4: find out that he is crying. But I heard quite
• 2:10:36
Speaker 4: distinctly the sound of a tear falling on his sleeve.
• 2:10:42
Speaker 4: How do you know it wasn't a drop of water
• 2:10:45
Speaker 4: falling off the sailing on him, asked gub gub Shah.
• 2:10:50
Speaker 4: Such ignorance. Sniff too too. A drop of water falling
• 2:10:55
Speaker 4: off the ceiling would have made ten times as much noise. Well,
• 2:11:01
Speaker 4: said the doctor. If the poor fellow's unhappy, we've got
• 2:11:05
Speaker 4: to get in and see what's the matter with him.
• 2:11:08
Speaker 4: Find me an axe and I'll chop the door down
• 2:11:14
Speaker 4: end of the sixteenth chapter. In the seventeenth chapter titled
• 2:11:20
Speaker 4: The Ocean Gossips, right away an axe was found, and
• 2:11:25
Speaker 4: the doctor soon chopped a hole in the door big
• 2:11:27
Speaker 4: enough to clamber through. At first he could see nothing
• 2:11:31
Speaker 4: at all. It was so dark inside, so he struck
• 2:11:34
Speaker 4: a match. The room was quite small, no window, the
• 2:11:39
Speaker 4: ceiling low for furniture, there was only one little stool
• 2:11:44
Speaker 4: all round the room. Big barrel stood against the walls,
• 2:11:47
Speaker 4: fastened at the bottom so they wouldn't tumble with the
• 2:11:49
Speaker 4: rolling of the ship. And above the barrels, pewter jugs
• 2:11:53
Speaker 4: of all sizes hung from wooden pegs. There was a strong,
• 2:11:57
Speaker 4: winey smell, and in the middle of the floor, said
• 2:12:00
Speaker 4: the little boy about eight years old, crying bitterly. Why
• 2:12:06
Speaker 4: declare it's a pirate's drum room, said Jip in a whisper. Ye, yes,
• 2:12:14
Speaker 4: very rum, said gub Bub. The smell makes me giddy.
• 2:12:19
Speaker 4: The little boy seemed rather frightened to find a man
• 2:12:22
Speaker 4: standing there before him, and all those animals staring in
• 2:12:25
Speaker 4: through the hole in the broken door. But as soon
• 2:12:28
Speaker 4: as he saw John Doolittle's face by the light of
• 2:12:30
Speaker 4: the match, he stopped crying and got up. You aren't
• 2:12:34
Speaker 4: one of the pirates, are you, he asked? And when
• 2:12:38
Speaker 4: the doctor threw back his head and laughed long and loud,
• 2:12:42
Speaker 4: the little boy smiled too, and came and took his hand.
• 2:12:47
Speaker 4: You laugh like a friend, he said, not like a pirate.
• 2:12:52
Speaker 4: Could you tell me where my uncle is? I'm afraid
• 2:12:55
Speaker 4: I can't, said the doctor. When did you see him last?
• 2:13:00
Speaker 4: It was the day before yesterday, said the boy. I
• 2:13:04
Speaker 4: and my uncle went out fishing in our little boat.
• 2:13:07
Speaker 4: When the pirates came and caught us. They sunk our
• 2:13:10
Speaker 4: fishing boat and brought us both on to the ship.
• 2:13:14
Speaker 4: They told my uncle that they wanted him to be
• 2:13:17
Speaker 4: a pirate like them, for he was clever at sailing
• 2:13:20
Speaker 4: a ship in all weathers. But he said he didn't
• 2:13:24
Speaker 4: want to be a pirate because killing people and stealing
• 2:13:27
Speaker 4: was no work for a good fisherman to do. Then
• 2:13:30
Speaker 4: the leader ben Ali got very angry and gnashed his
• 2:13:35
Speaker 4: teeth and said they would throw my uncle into the
• 2:13:38
Speaker 4: sea if he didn't do as they said. They sent
• 2:13:42
Speaker 4: me downstairs, and I heard the noise of a fight
• 2:13:45
Speaker 4: going on above. And when they let me come up
• 2:13:48
Speaker 4: again next day, my uncle was nowhere to be seen.
• 2:13:52
Speaker 4: I asked the pirates where he was, but they wouldn't
• 2:13:56
Speaker 4: tell me. I'm very much afraid threw him into the
• 2:14:01
Speaker 4: sea and drowned him. And the little boy began to
• 2:14:05
Speaker 4: cry again. Well, now wait a minute, said the doctor.
• 2:14:10
Speaker 4: Don't cry. Let's go and have tea in the dining
• 2:14:13
Speaker 4: room and we'll talk it over. Maybe your uncle is
• 2:14:16
Speaker 4: quite safe all the time. You don't know that he
• 2:14:20
Speaker 4: was drawn, do you, And that's something Perhaps we can
• 2:14:24
Speaker 4: find him for you. First, we'll go and have tea
• 2:14:26
Speaker 4: with strawberry jam and then we will see what we
• 2:14:29
Speaker 4: can do. All the animals had been standing around listening
• 2:14:33
Speaker 4: with great curiosity, And when they had gone into the
• 2:14:37
Speaker 4: ship's dining room and were having tea, Dab Dab came
• 2:14:40
Speaker 4: up behind the doctor's chair and whispered, ask the porpoises
• 2:14:44
Speaker 4: if the boy's uncle was drowned. They'll know, all right,
• 2:14:48
Speaker 4: said the doctor, taking a second piece of bread and jam.
• 2:14:53
Speaker 4: What are those funny clicking noises you are making with
• 2:14:56
Speaker 4: your tongue, asked the boy. Oh, I just said a
• 2:15:01
Speaker 4: couple of words in Duck language. The doctor answered, this
• 2:15:04
Speaker 4: is Dub Dub, one of my pets. I didn't even
• 2:15:07
Speaker 4: know that ducks had a language, said the boy. Are
• 2:15:12
Speaker 4: all these other animals your pets too? What is that
• 2:15:16
Speaker 4: strange looking thing with two heads? Sh The doctor whispered,
• 2:15:21
Speaker 4: that is the Pushmi PULLYU. Don't let him see we're
• 2:15:25
Speaker 4: talking about him. He gets so dreadfully embarrassed. Tell me
• 2:15:30
Speaker 4: how did you come to be locked up in that
• 2:15:32
Speaker 4: little room? The pirates shut me in there when they
• 2:15:36
Speaker 4: were going off to steal things from another ship. When
• 2:15:40
Speaker 4: I heard some one chopping on the door, I didn't
• 2:15:43
Speaker 4: know who it could be. I was very glad to
• 2:15:46
Speaker 4: find it was you. Do you think you will be
• 2:15:49
Speaker 4: able to find my uncle for me? Well, we are
• 2:15:53
Speaker 4: going to try very hard, said the doctor. Now what
• 2:15:55
Speaker 4: was your uncle like to look at? He had red hair,
• 2:16:00
Speaker 4: The boy answered, very red hair, and the picture of
• 2:16:04
Speaker 4: an anchor tattooed on his arm. He was a strong man,
• 2:16:08
Speaker 4: a kind uncle, and the best sailor in the South Atlantic.
• 2:16:13
Speaker 4: His fishing boat was called the Saucy Sally, a cutter
• 2:16:17
Speaker 4: rigged sloop. What's cuttering sloop? Whispered Gub Gub, turning to Jip,
• 2:16:28
Speaker 4: sh that's the kind of a ship, the man had said,
• 2:16:32
Speaker 4: Jip keep still, can't you?
• 2:16:38
  Speaker 11: Oh?
• 2:16:38
Speaker 2: Said the pig? Is that all?
• 2:16:41
Speaker 4: I thought? It was something to drink. So the doctor
• 2:16:45
Speaker 4: left the boy to play with the animals in the
• 2:16:47
Speaker 4: dining room and went upstairs to look for passing porpoises.
• 2:16:51
Speaker 4: And soon a whole school came dancing and jumping through
• 2:16:54
Speaker 4: the water on their way to Brazil. When they saw
• 2:16:57
Speaker 4: the doctor leaning on the rail of his ship, they
• 2:16:59
Speaker 4: came over to see how he was getting on, and
• 2:17:02
Speaker 4: the doctor asked them if they had seen anything of
• 2:17:05
Speaker 4: a man with red hair and an anchor tattooed on
• 2:17:07
Speaker 4: his arm. Do you mean the master of the saucy sally,
• 2:17:11
Speaker 4: asked the porpoises. Yes, said the doctor, that's the man.
• 2:17:14
Speaker 4: Has he been drowned? He is fishing sloop or sunk,
• 2:17:17
Speaker 4: said the porpoises, For we saw it lying at the
• 2:17:19
Speaker 4: bottom of the sea, but there was nobody inside because
• 2:17:23
Speaker 4: we went and looked. His little nephew is on the
• 2:17:26
Speaker 4: ship with me here, said the doctor, and he is
• 2:17:29
Speaker 4: terribly afraid that the pirates threw his uncle into the sea.
• 2:17:32
Speaker 4: Would you be so good as to find out for
• 2:17:34
Speaker 4: me for sure whether he has been drowned or not. Oh,
• 2:17:39
Speaker 4: he isn't drowned, said the porpoises. If he were, we
• 2:17:42
Speaker 4: would be sure to have heard of it from the
• 2:17:44
Speaker 4: deep sea decapods. We hear all the salt water news.
• 2:17:49
Speaker 4: The shell fish call us the ocean gossips. No, tell
• 2:17:52
Speaker 4: the little boy. We are sorry. We do not know
• 2:17:54
Speaker 4: where his uncle is, but we are quite certain he
• 2:17:58
Speaker 4: hasn't been drowned in the sea. So the doctor ran
• 2:18:02
Speaker 4: downstairs with the news and told the nephew, who clapt
• 2:18:04
Speaker 4: his hands with happiness and the Pushmi pully. You took
• 2:18:08
Speaker 4: the little boy on his back and gave him a
• 2:18:10
Speaker 4: ride round the dining room table, while all the other
• 2:18:12
Speaker 4: animals followed behind, beating the dish covers with spoons, pretending
• 2:18:17
Speaker 4: it was a Barat.
• 2:18:21
Speaker 9: The eighteenth chapter titled smells, your uncle must now be found,
• 2:18:28
Speaker 9: said the doctor. That is the next thing, now that
• 2:18:32
Speaker 9: we know he wasn't thrown into the sea. Then Dab
• 2:18:35
Speaker 9: Dab came up to him again and whispered, ask the
• 2:18:39
Speaker 9: eagles to look for the man. No living creature can
• 2:18:43
Speaker 9: see better than an eagle. When they are miles high
• 2:18:46
Speaker 9: in the air, they can count the ants crawling on
• 2:18:50
Speaker 9: the ground, ask the eagles. So the doctor sent one
• 2:18:55
Speaker 9: of the swallows off to get some eagles. In about
• 2:18:59
Speaker 9: an hour, the little bird came back with six different
• 2:19:02
Speaker 9: kinds of eagles, a black eagle, a bald eagle, a
• 2:19:06
Speaker 9: fish eagle, a golden eagle, an eagle vulture, and a
• 2:19:11
Speaker 9: white tailed sea eagle. Twice as high as the boy.
• 2:19:15
Speaker 9: They were, each one of them, and they stood on
• 2:19:19
Speaker 9: the rail of the ship like round shouldered soldiers, all
• 2:19:23
Speaker 9: in a row, stern and still and stiff, while their
• 2:19:27
Speaker 9: great gleaming black eyes shot darting glances here and there
• 2:19:32
Speaker 9: and everywhere. Gub Gub was scared of them and got
• 2:19:37
Speaker 9: behind a barrel. He said he felt as if those
• 2:19:40
Speaker 9: terrible eyes were looking right inside of him to see
• 2:19:44
Speaker 9: what he had stolen for lunch. And the doctor said
• 2:19:47
Speaker 9: to the eagles, a man has been lost, a fisherman
• 2:19:52
Speaker 9: with red hair and an anchor marked on his arm.
• 2:19:56
Speaker 9: Would you be so kind as to see if you
• 2:19:58
Speaker 9: can find him for a This boy is the man's nephew.
• 2:20:04
Speaker 9: Eagles do not talk very much, and all they answered
• 2:20:08
Speaker 9: in their husky voices was you may be sure that
• 2:20:12
Speaker 9: we will do our best for John Dolittle. Then they
• 2:20:19
Speaker 9: flew off, and Gub Gub came out from behind his
• 2:20:22
Speaker 9: barrel to see them go up and up and up.
• 2:20:27
Speaker 9: They went higher and higher and higher still. Then when
• 2:20:32
Speaker 9: the doctor could only just see them, they parted company
• 2:20:36
Speaker 9: and started going off all different ways, north east, south
• 2:20:41
Speaker 9: and west, looking like tiny greens of black sand creeping
• 2:20:46
Speaker 9: across the wide blue sky. My gracious, said Gub Gub
• 2:20:53
Speaker 9: in a hushed voice. What a height I wonder they
• 2:20:58
Speaker 9: don't scorch their feathers so near the sun. They were
• 2:21:03
Speaker 9: gone a long time, and when they came back it
• 2:21:06
Speaker 9: was almost night, and the eagles said to the doctor,
• 2:21:11
Speaker 9: we have searched all the seas, and all the countries,
• 2:21:14
Speaker 9: and all the islands, and all the cities and all
• 2:21:18
Speaker 9: the villages in this half of the world, but we
• 2:21:22
Speaker 9: have failed. In the main street of Gibraltar we saw
• 2:21:25
Speaker 9: three hares lying on a wheelbarrow before a baker's door.
• 2:21:29
Speaker 9: But they were not the hairs of a man. They
• 2:21:32
Speaker 9: were the hares out of a fur coat. Nowhere on
• 2:21:36
Speaker 9: land or water could we see any sign of this
• 2:21:40
Speaker 9: boy's uncle. And if we could not see him, then
• 2:21:44
Speaker 9: he is not to be seen for John Dolittle, we
• 2:21:48
Speaker 9: have done our best. Then the six great birds flapped
• 2:21:53
Speaker 9: their big wings and flew back to their homes in
• 2:21:56
Speaker 9: the mountains and the rocks. Well, said Dab Dab after
• 2:22:01
Speaker 9: they had gone. What are we going to do now?
• 2:22:05
Speaker 9: The boy's uncle must be found. There's no two ways
• 2:22:08
Speaker 9: about that. The lad isn't old enough to be knocking
• 2:22:12
Speaker 9: around the world by himself. Boys aren't like ducklings. They
• 2:22:16
Speaker 9: have to be taken care of till they're quite old.
• 2:22:20
Speaker 9: I wish Chee Chee were here. He would soon find
• 2:22:24
Speaker 9: the man. Good old Chee Chee. I wonder how he's
• 2:22:28
Speaker 9: getting on. If we only had Polynesia with us said
• 2:22:32
Speaker 9: the white mouse. She would soon think of some way.
• 2:22:36
Speaker 9: Do you remember how she got us all out of
• 2:22:38
Speaker 9: prison the second time? My, but she was a clever one.
• 2:22:44
Speaker 9: I don't think so much of those eagle fellows, said Chip.
• 2:22:48
Speaker 9: They're just conceited. They may have very good eyesight and
• 2:22:52
Speaker 9: all that, but when you ask them to find a
• 2:22:55
Speaker 9: man for you, they can't do it, and they have
• 2:22:58
Speaker 9: the cheek to come back and say that nobody else
• 2:23:00
Speaker 9: could do it. They're just conceited, like that Collie in Puddleby.
• 2:23:05
Speaker 9: And I don't think a whole lot of those gossipy
• 2:23:08
Speaker 9: old porpoises either. All they could tell us was that
• 2:23:11
Speaker 9: the man isn't in the sea. We don't want to
• 2:23:14
Speaker 9: know where he Isn't we want to know where he is. Oh,
• 2:23:20
Speaker 9: don't talk so much, said Gub Gub. It's easy to talk,
• 2:23:24
Speaker 9: but it isn't so easy to find a man when
• 2:23:27
Speaker 9: you have got the whole world to hunt him in.
• 2:23:30
Speaker 9: Maybe the fisherman's hair has turned white worrying about the boy,
• 2:23:35
Speaker 9: and that was why the eagles didn't find him. You
• 2:23:39
Speaker 9: don't know everything. You're just talking. You are not doing
• 2:23:43
Speaker 9: anything to help. You couldn't find the boy's uncle any
• 2:23:47
Speaker 9: more than the eagles could You couldn't do as well, couldn't,
• 2:23:52
Speaker 9: I said the dog. That's all you know, you stupid
• 2:23:55
Speaker 9: piece of warm bacon. I haven't begun to try yet,
• 2:23:59
Speaker 9: have a you wait and see. Then Jip went to
• 2:24:03
Speaker 9: the doctor and said, ask the boy if he has
• 2:24:06
Speaker 9: anything in his pockets that belonged to his uncle, will
• 2:24:09
Speaker 9: you please? So the doctor asked him, and the boy
• 2:24:13
Speaker 9: showed them a gold ring which he wore on a
• 2:24:16
Speaker 9: piece of string around his neck because it was too
• 2:24:18
Speaker 9: big for his finger. He said his uncle gave it
• 2:24:21
Speaker 9: to him when they saw the pirates coming. Jip smelt
• 2:24:26
Speaker 9: the ring and said that's no good. Ask him if
• 2:24:30
Speaker 9: he has anything else that belonged to his uncle. Then
• 2:24:34
Speaker 9: the boy took from his pocket a great, big red
• 2:24:37
Speaker 9: handkerchief and said this was my uncle's too. As soon
• 2:24:42
Speaker 9: as the boy pulled it out, Jip shouted, snuff by Jingo,
• 2:24:47
Speaker 9: black rappy snuff. M don't you smell it? His uncle
• 2:24:52
Speaker 9: took snuff? Ask him doctor. The doctor questioned the boy again,
• 2:24:57
Speaker 9: and he said, yes, my uncle took a lot of snuff. Fine,
• 2:25:01
Speaker 9: said Jip. The man's as good as found twill be
• 2:25:05
Speaker 9: as easy as stealing milk from a kitten. Tell the boy,
• 2:25:09
Speaker 9: I'll find his uncle for him in less than a week.
• 2:25:12
Speaker 9: Let us go upstairs and see which way the wind
• 2:25:15
Speaker 9: is blowing. But it is dark now, said the doctor.
• 2:25:19
Speaker 9: You can't find him in the dark. I don't need
• 2:25:22
Speaker 9: any light to look for a man who smells of
• 2:25:25
Speaker 9: black rappee snuff, said Jip as he climbed the stairs.
• 2:25:30
Speaker 9: If the man had a hard smell like string now
• 2:25:33
Speaker 9: or hot water, it would be different. But snuff, Tut tut.
• 2:25:39
Speaker 9: Does hot water have a smell, asked the doctor. Certainly
• 2:25:44
Speaker 9: it has, said Jip. Hot water smells quite different from
• 2:25:48
Speaker 9: cold water. It is warm water or ice that has
• 2:25:53
Speaker 9: the really difficult smell. Why I once followed a man
• 2:25:58
Speaker 9: for ten miles on a dark night by the smell
• 2:26:01
Speaker 9: of the hot water he had used to shave with,
• 2:26:04
Speaker 9: for the poor fellow had no soap. Now, then let
• 2:26:08
Speaker 9: us see which way the wind is blowing. Wind is
• 2:26:10
Speaker 9: very important in long distant smelling. It mustn't be too
• 2:26:15
Speaker 9: fierce a wind, and of course it must blow the
• 2:26:18
Speaker 9: right way. A nice, steady, damp breeze is the best
• 2:26:22
Speaker 9: of all. Pah, this wind is from the north, then,
• 2:26:27
Speaker 9: Jip went up to the front of the ship and
• 2:26:29
Speaker 9: smelt the wind, and he started muttering to himself. Tar
• 2:26:37
Speaker 9: Spanish onions, kerosene oil, wet raincoats, crushed laurel leaves, rubber burning, lace,
• 2:26:47
Speaker 9: curtains being washed. Nope, my mistake, lace curtains hanging out
• 2:26:51
Speaker 9: to dry, and foxes, hundreds of them, cubs. And can
• 2:26:59
Speaker 9: you really smell all those different things in this one wind,
• 2:27:03
Speaker 9: asked the doctor. Why, of course, said Jip. And those
• 2:27:08
Speaker 9: are only a few of the easy smells, the strong ones.
• 2:27:11
Speaker 9: Any mongrel could smell those with a cold in the head.
• 2:27:15
Speaker 9: Wait now, and I'll tell you some of the harder
• 2:27:18
Speaker 9: sins that are coming on this wind, A few of
• 2:27:21
Speaker 9: the dainty ones. Then the dog shut his eyes tight,
• 2:27:26
Speaker 9: poked his nose straight up in the air, and sniffed
• 2:27:29
Speaker 9: hard with his mouth half open. For a long time,
• 2:27:33
Speaker 9: he said nothing. He kept as still as a stone.
• 2:27:37
Speaker 9: He hardly seemed to be breathing at all. When at
• 2:27:41
Speaker 9: last he began to speak, it sounded almost as though
• 2:27:43
Speaker 9: he were singing sadly in a dream. Bricks, he whispered,
• 2:27:51
Speaker 9: very low, Oh, yellow bricks crumbling with age in a
• 2:27:59
Speaker 9: garden wall. The sweet breath of young cows standing in
• 2:28:05
Speaker 9: a mountain stream, the lead roof of a dovecote or
• 2:28:11
Speaker 9: perhaps a grainary with the midday sun on it. Black
• 2:28:18
Speaker 9: kid gloves lying in a bureau drawer of walnut wood.
• 2:28:24
Speaker 9: A dusty road with a horses drinking trough beneath the sycamores,
• 2:28:30
Speaker 9: little mushrooms bursting through the rotting leaves. And and any parsnips,
• 2:28:39
Speaker 9: asked gub Gub, No, said Jip, you always think of
• 2:28:43
Speaker 9: things to eat. No parsnips whatever, And no snuff. Plenty
• 2:28:50
Speaker 9: of pipes and cigarettes and a few cigars, but no snuff.
• 2:28:55
Speaker 9: We must wait till the wind changes to the south.
• 2:28:59
Speaker 9: Yes it's a poor wind, that, said gub Gub. I
• 2:29:03
Speaker 9: think you're a fake Jip. Who ever heard of finding
• 2:29:07
Speaker 9: a man in the middle of the ocean just by smell?
• 2:29:10
Speaker 9: I told you you couldn't do it. Look here, said Jip,
• 2:29:14
Speaker 9: getting really angry. You're going to get a bite on
• 2:29:17
Speaker 9: the nose in a minute. You needn't think that just
• 2:29:21
Speaker 9: because the doctor won't let us give you what you deserve,
• 2:29:24
Speaker 9: that you can be as cheeky as you like. Stop quarreling,
• 2:29:29
  Speaker 9: said the doctor.

  Speaker 2: Stop it.
• 2:29:30
Speaker 9: Life's too short, Tell me, Jip, where do you think
• 2:29:34
Speaker 9: those smells are coming from? From Devon and Wales. Most
• 2:29:39
Speaker 9: of them said, Jip, the wind is coming that way. Well, well,
• 2:29:45
Speaker 9: said the doctor. You know that's really quite remarkable. Quite
• 2:29:51
Speaker 9: I must make a note of that for my new book.
• 2:29:53
Speaker 9: I wonder if you could train me to smell as
• 2:29:57
Speaker 9: well as that. But no, perhaps I'm better off the
• 2:30:01
Speaker 9: way I am. Enough is as good as a feast.
• 2:30:04
Speaker 9: They say, let's go down to supper. I'm quite hungry,
• 2:30:09
Speaker 9: so am I said gub Gub end of the eighteenth.
• 2:30:15
Speaker 12: The nineteenth chapter titled the Rock Up. They got early
• 2:30:22
Speaker 12: next morning out of the silken beds, and they saw
• 2:30:25
Speaker 12: that the sun was shining brightly, and that the wind
• 2:30:28
Speaker 12: was blowing from the south. Jip smelt the south wind
• 2:30:32
Speaker 12: for half an hour. Then he came to the doctor
• 2:30:35
Speaker 12: shaking his head. I smell no snuff as yet, he said.
• 2:30:40
Speaker 12: We must wait till the wind changes to the east.
• 2:30:44
Speaker 12: But even when the east wind came at three o'clock
• 2:30:47
Speaker 12: that afternoon, the dog could not catch the smell of snuff.
• 2:30:52
Speaker 12: The little boy was terribly disappointed and began to cry again,
• 2:30:57
Speaker 12: saying that no one seemed to be able to find
• 2:30:59
Speaker 12: his uncle for him him. But all Jip said to
• 2:31:02
Speaker 12: the doctor was tell him that when the wind changes
• 2:31:05
Speaker 12: to the west, I'll find his uncle, even though he
• 2:31:08
Speaker 12: be in China, so long as he is still taking
• 2:31:11
Speaker 12: black rappee snuff. Three days they had to wait before
• 2:31:16
Speaker 12: the west wind came. This was on a Friday morning, early,
• 2:31:20
Speaker 12: just as it was getting light. A fine, rainy mist
• 2:31:24
Speaker 12: lay on the sea, like a thin fog, and the
• 2:31:27
Speaker 12: wind was soft and warm and wet. As soon as
• 2:31:32
Speaker 12: Jip awoke, he ran upstairs and poked his nose in
• 2:31:35
Speaker 12: the air. Then he got most frightfully excited and rushed
• 2:31:39
Speaker 12: down again to wake the doctor up. Doctor, he cried,
• 2:31:43
Speaker 12: I've got it, doctor, doctor, wake up. Listen, I've got it.
• 2:31:48
Speaker 12: The wind's from the west, and it smells of nothing
• 2:31:50
Speaker 12: but snuff. Come upstairs and start the ship quick. So
• 2:31:54
Speaker 12: the doctor tumbled out of bed and went to the
• 2:31:56
Speaker 12: rudder to steer the ship. Now, I'll go to the front,
• 2:32:00
Speaker 12: said Jip, And you watch my nose whichever way I pointed,
• 2:32:03
Speaker 12: you turn the ship the same way. The man cannot
• 2:32:06
Speaker 12: be far off. With the smell as strong as this,
• 2:32:09
Speaker 12: and the winds all lovely and wet, now watch me.
• 2:32:14
Speaker 12: So all that morning Jip stood in the front part
• 2:32:16
Speaker 12: of the ship, sniffing the wind and pointing the way
• 2:32:19
Speaker 12: for the doctor to steer, while all the animals and
• 2:32:22
Speaker 12: the little boy stood round with their eyes wide open,
• 2:32:26
Speaker 12: watching the dog in wonder. About lunch time, Jip asked
• 2:32:31
Speaker 12: dab Dab to tell the doctor that he was getting
• 2:32:33
Speaker 12: worried and wanted to speak to him. So dab Dab
• 2:32:37
Speaker 12: went and fetched the doctor from the other end of
• 2:32:39
Speaker 12: the ship, and Jip said to him, the boy's uncle
• 2:32:43
Speaker 12: is starving. We must make the ship go as fast
• 2:32:46
Speaker 12: as we can. How do you know he is starving,
• 2:32:50
Speaker 12: asked the doctor, Because there is no other smell in
• 2:32:53
Speaker 12: the west wind but snuff, said Jip. If the man
• 2:32:57
Speaker 12: were cooking or eating food of any kind, I would
• 2:33:00
Speaker 12: be bound to smell it too, But he hasn't even
• 2:33:03
Speaker 12: fresh water to drink. All he is taking is snuff
• 2:33:08
Speaker 12: in large pinches. We are getting nearer to him all
• 2:33:11
Speaker 12: the time because the smell grows stronger every minute. But
• 2:33:15
Speaker 12: make the ship go as fast as you can, for
• 2:33:17
Speaker 12: I am certain that the man is starving. All right,
• 2:33:22
Speaker 12: said the doctor, and he sent dab Dab to ask
• 2:33:24
Speaker 12: the swallows to pull the ship, the same as they
• 2:33:27
Speaker 12: had done when the pirates were chasing them. So the
• 2:33:30
Speaker 12: stout little birds came down and once more harnessed themselves
• 2:33:35
Speaker 12: to the ship. And now the boat went bounding through
• 2:33:38
Speaker 12: the waves at a terrible speed. It went so fast
• 2:33:42
Speaker 12: that the fishes in the sea had to jump for
• 2:33:44
Speaker 12: their lives to get out of the way and not
• 2:33:46
Speaker 12: be run over. And all the animals got tremendously excited,
• 2:33:51
Speaker 12: and they gave up looking at Jip and turned to
• 2:33:54
Speaker 12: watch the sea in the front, to spy out any
• 2:33:56
Speaker 12: land or islands where the starving man might be. But
• 2:34:01
Speaker 12: hour after hour went by, and still the ship went
• 2:34:04
Speaker 12: rushing on over the same flat, flat sea, and no
• 2:34:10
Speaker 12: land anywhere came in sight. And now the animals gave
• 2:34:15
Speaker 12: up chattering and sat around silent, anxious and miserable. The
• 2:34:21
Speaker 12: little boy again grew sad, and on JIP's face there
• 2:34:25
Speaker 12: was a worried look. At last, late in the afternoon,
• 2:34:30
Speaker 12: just as the sun was going down, the owl Touto,
• 2:34:33
Speaker 12: who was perched on the tip of the mast, suddenly
• 2:34:36
Speaker 12: startled them all by crying out at the top of
• 2:34:38
Speaker 12: his voice, Jip, Jip, I see a great, great rock
• 2:34:43
Speaker 12: in front of us. Look way out there where the
• 2:34:46
Speaker 12: sky and the water meet. See the sun shine on
• 2:34:49
Speaker 12: it like gold. Is the smell coming from there? And
• 2:34:53
Speaker 12: Gyp called back, Yes, that's it, that is where the
• 2:34:58
Speaker 12: man is at last last. And when they got nearer
• 2:35:02
Speaker 12: they could see that the rock was very large, as
• 2:35:05
Speaker 12: large as a big field. No trees grew on it,
• 2:35:09
Speaker 12: no grass, nothing. The great rock was as smooth and
• 2:35:14
Speaker 12: as bare as the back of a tortoise. Then the
• 2:35:20
Speaker 12: doctor sailed the ship right around the rock, but nowhere
• 2:35:24
Speaker 12: on it could a man be seen. All the animals
• 2:35:27
Speaker 12: screwed up their eyes and looked as hard as they could,
• 2:35:30
Speaker 12: and John Dolittle got a telescope from downstairs, but not
• 2:35:35
Speaker 12: one living thing could they spy, not even a gull,
• 2:35:39
Speaker 12: nor a starfish, nor a shred of seaweed. They all
• 2:35:44
Speaker 12: stood still and listened, straining their ears for any sound,
• 2:35:49
Speaker 12: but the only noise they heard was the gentle lapping
• 2:35:53
Speaker 12: of the little waves against the sides of their ship.
• 2:35:57
Speaker 12: Then they all started calling hullo there, oh, till their
• 2:36:01
Speaker 12: voices were hoarse, but only the echo came back from
• 2:36:05
Speaker 12: the rock, and the little boy burst into tears and
• 2:36:09
Speaker 12: said I am afraid I shall never see my uncle
• 2:36:13
Speaker 12: any more. What shall I tell them when I get home?
• 2:36:18
Speaker 12: But Gip called to the doctor. He must be there,
• 2:36:21
Speaker 12: he must, he must. The smell goes no further. He
• 2:36:25
Speaker 12: must be there. I tell you, sail the ship close
• 2:36:28
Speaker 12: to the rock and let me jump out on it.
• 2:36:32
Speaker 12: So the doctor brought the ship as close as he
• 2:36:34
Speaker 12: could and let down the anchor. Then he and Jip
• 2:36:37
Speaker 12: got out of the ship on to the rock. Gyp
• 2:36:41
Speaker 12: at once put his nose down close to the ground
• 2:36:43
Speaker 12: and began to run all over the place, up and down.
• 2:36:46
Speaker 12: He went back and forth, zigzagging, twisting, doubling and turning,
• 2:36:52
Speaker 12: and everywhere he went. The doctor ran behind him, close
• 2:36:55
Speaker 12: at his heels till he was terribly out of breath.
• 2:37:00
Speaker 12: At last, Gyp let out a great bark and sat down.
• 2:37:04
Speaker 12: When the doctor came running up to him, he found
• 2:37:06
Speaker 12: the dog staring into a big, deep hole in the
• 2:37:09
Speaker 12: middle of the rock. The boy's uncle is down there,
• 2:37:13
Speaker 12: said Jip quietly. No wonder those silly eagles couldn't see him.
• 2:37:17
Speaker 12: It takes a dog to find a man. So the
• 2:37:20
Speaker 12: doctor got down into the hole, which seemed to be
• 2:37:23
Speaker 12: a kind of cave or tunnel, running a long way
• 2:37:26
Speaker 12: under the ground. Then he struck a match and started
• 2:37:30
Speaker 12: to make his way along the dark passage, with Gyp
• 2:37:33
Speaker 12: following behind. The Doctor's match soon went out, and he
• 2:37:37
Speaker 12: had to strike another, and another and another. At last
• 2:37:45
Speaker 12: the passage came to an end, and the doctor found
• 2:37:49
Speaker 12: himself in a kind of tiny room with walls of rock,
• 2:37:54
Speaker 12: and there in the middle of the room, his head
• 2:37:57
Speaker 12: resting on his arms, lay a man with fairy red hair,
• 2:38:01
Speaker 12: fast asleep. Gyp went up and sniffed at something lying
• 2:38:06
Speaker 12: on the ground beside him. The doctor stooped and picked
• 2:38:09
Speaker 12: it up. It was an enormous snuff box and it
• 2:38:14
Speaker 12: was full of black Repeat the twentieth chapter The Fisherman's
• 2:38:19
Speaker 12: Town Gently, then very gently, the doctor woke the man up,
• 2:38:27
Speaker 12: but just at that moment, the match went out again,
• 2:38:31
Speaker 12: and the man thought it was ben Ali coming back,
• 2:38:33
Speaker 12: and he began to punch the doctor in the dark.
• 2:38:37
Speaker 12: But when John Dolittle told him who it was and
• 2:38:39
Speaker 12: that he had his little nephew safe on his ship,
• 2:38:42
Speaker 12: the man was tremendously glad and said he was sorry
• 2:38:45
Speaker 12: he had fought the doctor. He had not hurt him much,
• 2:38:48
Speaker 12: though because it was too dark to punch properly. Then
• 2:38:52
Speaker 12: he gave the doctor a pinch of snuff, and the
• 2:38:55
Speaker 12: old man told how the barbary dragon had put him
• 2:38:58
Speaker 12: on to this rock and left him there when he
• 2:39:01
Speaker 12: wouldn't promise to become a pirate, and how he used
• 2:39:04
Speaker 12: to sleep down in this hole because there was no
• 2:39:06
Speaker 12: house on the rock to keep him warm. And then
• 2:39:10
Speaker 12: he said, for four days I have had nothing to
• 2:39:13
Speaker 12: eat or drink. I have lived on snuff. There you are,
• 2:39:18
Speaker 12: said Chip, What did I tell you? So they struck
• 2:39:22
Speaker 12: some more matches and made their way out through the
• 2:39:24
Speaker 12: passage into the daylight, and the doctor hurried the man
• 2:39:27
Speaker 12: down to the boat to get some soup. When the
• 2:39:31
Speaker 12: animals and the little boy saw the doctor and Jip
• 2:39:33
Speaker 12: coming back to the ship with a red headed man,
• 2:39:36
Speaker 12: they began to cheer and yell and dance about the boat,
• 2:39:39
Speaker 12: and the swallows up above started whistling at the top
• 2:39:43
Speaker 12: of their voices, thousands and millions of them, to show
• 2:39:47
Speaker 12: that they too were glad that the boy's brave uncle
• 2:39:49
Speaker 12: had been found. The noise they made was so great
• 2:39:53
Speaker 12: that sailors far out at sea thought that a terrible
• 2:39:56
Speaker 12: storm was coming hark to that gale howling in the east,
• 2:40:00
Speaker 12: they said, And Jip was awfully proud of himself, though
• 2:40:06
Speaker 12: he tried hard not to look conceited. When Dab Dab
• 2:40:10
Speaker 12: came to him and said, Jip, I had no idea
• 2:40:13
Speaker 12: you were so clever, he just tossed his head and answered, oh,
• 2:40:17
Speaker 12: that's nothing special. But it takes a dog to find
• 2:40:20
Speaker 12: a man, you know. Birds are no good for a
• 2:40:22
Speaker 12: game like that. Then the doctor asked the red haired
• 2:40:26
Speaker 12: fisherman where his home was, and when he had told him,
• 2:40:30
Speaker 12: the doctor asked the swallows to guide the ship there first.
• 2:40:35
Speaker 12: And when they had come to the land which the
• 2:40:37
Speaker 12: men had spoke of, they saw a little fishing town
• 2:40:39
Speaker 12: at the foot of a rocky mountain, and the man
• 2:40:42
Speaker 12: pointed out the house where he lived. And while they
• 2:40:46
Speaker 12: were letting down the anchor, the little boy's mother, who
• 2:40:49
Speaker 12: was also the man's sister, came running down the shore
• 2:40:52
Speaker 12: to meet them, laughing and crying at the same time.
• 2:40:56
Speaker 12: She had been sitting on a hill for twenty days,
• 2:40:59
Speaker 12: watching the sea and waiting for them to return. And
• 2:41:04
Speaker 12: she kissed the doctor many times so that he giggled
• 2:41:07
Speaker 12: and blushed like a schoolgirl, and She tried to kiss
• 2:41:10
Speaker 12: Gyp too, but he ran away and hid inside the ship.
• 2:41:15
  Speaker 12: It's a silly business, this kissing, he said, I don't
• 2:41:18
Speaker 12: hold by it. Let her go and kiss Gub gub
• 2:41:21
Speaker 12: if she must kiss something. The fisherman and his sister
• 2:41:25
Speaker 12: didn't want the doctor to go away again in a hurry.
• 2:41:29
Speaker 12: They begged him to spend a few days with them,
• 2:41:31
Speaker 12: So John Dolittle and his animals had to stay at
• 2:41:34
Speaker 12: their house a whole Saturday and Sunday and half of Monday.
• 2:41:39
Speaker 12: And all the little boys of the fishing village went
• 2:41:42
Speaker 12: down to the beach and pointed at the great ship
• 2:41:45
Speaker 12: anchored there, and said to one another in whispers, look
• 2:41:49
Speaker 12: that was a pirate ship. Ben Ali's the most terrible
• 2:41:53
Speaker 12: pirate that ever sailed the Seven Seas. That old gentleman
• 2:41:56
Speaker 12: with the high hat, who staying up at Missus Trevellian's,
• 2:42:00
Speaker 12: he took the ship away from the barbary dragon and
• 2:42:03
Speaker 12: made him into a farmer. Who'd have thought it of
• 2:42:05
Speaker 12: him him so gentle like? And all, look at the
• 2:42:09
Speaker 12: great red sails, ain't she the wicked looking ship? And
• 2:42:12
Speaker 12: fast my All those two days and a half that
• 2:42:16
Speaker 12: the doctor stayed at the little fishing town. The people
• 2:42:19
Speaker 12: kept asking him out to teas and luncheons and dinners
• 2:42:23
Speaker 12: and parties. All the ladies sent him boxes of flowers
• 2:42:27
Speaker 12: and candies, and the village band played tunes under his
• 2:42:30
Speaker 12: window every night. At last the doctor said, good people,
• 2:42:36
Speaker 12: I must go home now. You have really been most kind.
• 2:42:40
Speaker 12: I shall always remember it, but I must go home,
• 2:42:44
Speaker 12: for I have things to do. Then, just as the
• 2:42:47
Speaker 12: doctor was about to leave, the mayor of the town
• 2:42:50
Speaker 12: came down the street and a lot of other people
• 2:42:52
Speaker 12: in grand clothes with him. And the mayor stopped before
• 2:42:56
Speaker 12: the house where the doctor was living, and everybody in
• 2:42:59
Speaker 12: the village round to see what was going to happen.
• 2:43:04
Speaker 12: After six page boys had blown on shining trumpets to
• 2:43:07
Speaker 12: make the people stop talking, the doctor came out on
• 2:43:10
Speaker 12: to the steps and the mayor spoke. Doctor John Doolittle said,
• 2:43:17
Speaker 12: he it is a great pleasure for me to present
• 2:43:20
Speaker 12: to the man who rid the seas of the Dragon
• 2:43:22
Speaker 12: of Barbary, this little token from the grateful people of
• 2:43:26
Speaker 12: our worthy town. And the mayor took from his pocket
• 2:43:31
Speaker 12: a little tissue paper packet and opened it. He handed
• 2:43:35
Speaker 12: to the doctor a perfectly beautiful watch with real diamonds
• 2:43:39
Speaker 12: in the back. Then the mayor pulled out of his
• 2:43:42
Speaker 12: pocket a still larger parcel and said, where is the dog?
• 2:43:47
Speaker 12: Then everybody started to hunt for Jip, and at last
• 2:43:51
Speaker 12: Dab Dab found him on the other side of the
• 2:43:53
Speaker 12: village in a stable yard, where all the dogs of
• 2:43:55
Speaker 12: the countryside were standing round him, speechless with admiration and respect.
• 2:44:00
Speaker 12: When Gyp was brought to the doctor's side, the mayor
• 2:44:03
Speaker 12: opened the larger parcel and inside was a dog collar
• 2:44:07
Speaker 12: made of solid gold, and a great murmur of wonder
• 2:44:12
Speaker 12: went up from the village folk as the mayor bent
• 2:44:14
Speaker 12: down and fastened it round the dog's neck with his
• 2:44:17
Speaker 12: own hands. For written on the collar in big letters
• 2:44:23
Speaker 12: were these words, Jip, the cleverest dog in the world.
• 2:44:30
Speaker 12: Then the whole crowd moved down to the beach to
• 2:44:32
Speaker 12: see them off. And after the red haired fisherman and
• 2:44:35
Speaker 12: his sister and the little boy had thanked the doctor
• 2:44:39
Speaker 12: and his dog over and over again, the great swift
• 2:44:43
Speaker 12: ship with the red sails was turned once more towards Puddleby,
• 2:44:46
Speaker 12: and they sailed out to sea, while the village band
• 2:44:50
Speaker 12: played music on the shore. End of the twentieth chapter.
• 2:44:56
Speaker 13: Chapter twenty one home again. March winds had come and gone,
• 2:45:02
Speaker 13: April's showers were over, May's buds had opened into flower,
• 2:45:08
Speaker 13: and the June sun was shining on the pleasant fields.
• 2:45:12
Speaker 13: When John Doolittle at last got back to his own country,
• 2:45:16
Speaker 13: but he did not yet go home to puddleby first
• 2:45:20
Speaker 13: he went traveling through the land. Would the push Me
• 2:45:23
Speaker 13: Pull You in a gypsy wagon, stopping at all the
• 2:45:26
Speaker 13: country fairs, and there were the acrobats on one side
• 2:45:30
Speaker 13: of them, and the punch and Judy show on the other.
• 2:45:33
Speaker 13: They would hang out a big sign which read come
• 2:45:37
Speaker 13: and see the marvelous two headed animal from the jungles
• 2:45:40
Speaker 13: of Africa. Admission sixpence, and the push Me Pull You
• 2:45:46
Speaker 13: would stay inside the wagon while the other animals would
• 2:45:49
Speaker 13: lie about underneath. The doctor sat in a chair in front,
• 2:45:53
Speaker 13: taking the sixpence and smiling on the people as they
• 2:45:57
Speaker 13: went in. And Dab Dab was kept busy all the time,
• 2:46:01
Speaker 13: scolding him because he would let the children in for
• 2:46:04
Speaker 13: nothing when she wasn't looking. And menagerie keepers and circus
• 2:46:09
Speaker 13: men came and asked the doctor to sell them the
• 2:46:12
Speaker 13: strange creature, saying they would pay a tremendous lot of
• 2:46:16
Speaker 13: money for him, but the Doctor always shook his head
• 2:46:19
Speaker 13: and said, no, the push Me pull you shall never
• 2:46:23
Speaker 13: be shut up in a cage. He shall be free
• 2:46:25
Speaker 13: always to come and go like you and me. Many
• 2:46:29
Speaker 13: curious sights and happenings they saw in their wandering life,
• 2:46:34
Speaker 13: but they all seemed quite ordinary after the great things
• 2:46:37
Speaker 13: they had seen and done in foreign lands. It was
• 2:46:40
Speaker 13: very interesting at first being sort of part of a circus,
• 2:46:44
Speaker 13: but after a few weeks they all got dreadfully tired
• 2:46:47
Speaker 13: of it, and the doctor and all of them were
• 2:46:50
Speaker 13: longing to go home. But so many people came flocking
• 2:46:54
Speaker 13: to the little wagon and paid the sixpence to go
• 2:46:57
Speaker 13: inside and see the Pushmi pull you that very soon
• 2:47:01
Speaker 13: the doctor was able to give up being a showman,
• 2:47:04
Speaker 13: and one fine day, when the hollyhocks were in full bloom,
• 2:47:08
Speaker 13: he came back to puddleby a rich man to live
• 2:47:11
Speaker 13: in the little house with the big garden. And the
• 2:47:14
Speaker 13: old lame horse in the stable was glad to see him.
• 2:47:18
Speaker 13: So were the swallows, who had already built their nest
• 2:47:21
Speaker 13: under the eaves of his roof and had young ones.
• 2:47:24
Speaker 13: And dab Dab was glad too to get back to
• 2:47:27
Speaker 13: the house she knew so well, although there was a
• 2:47:31
Speaker 13: terrible lot of dusting to be done, with cobwebs everywhere.
• 2:47:35
Speaker 13: And after Jip had gone and shown his golden collar
• 2:47:38
Speaker 13: to the conceited collie next door, he came back and
• 2:47:41
Speaker 13: began running round the garden like a crazy thing, looking
• 2:47:45
Speaker 13: for the bones he had buried long ago, and chasing
• 2:47:48
Speaker 13: the rats out of the tool shed, while gub Gub
• 2:47:51
Speaker 13: dug up the horse radish which had grown three feet
• 2:47:54
Speaker 13: high in the corner by the garden wall. And the
• 2:47:56
Speaker 13: doctor went and saw the sailor who had lent him
• 2:47:59
Speaker 13: the boat, and he bought two new ships for him
• 2:48:01
Speaker 13: and a rubber doll for his baby, and he paid
• 2:48:04
Speaker 13: the grocer for the food he had lent him for
• 2:48:06
Speaker 13: the journey to Africa. And he bought another piano and
• 2:48:09
Speaker 13: put the white mice back in it, because they said
• 2:48:12
Speaker 13: the bureau drawer was drafty. Even when the doctor had
• 2:48:16
Speaker 13: filled the old money box on the dresser shelf, he
• 2:48:19
Speaker 13: still had a lot of money left, and he had
• 2:48:21
Speaker 13: to get three more money boxes just as big to
• 2:48:24
Speaker 13: put the rest in money. He said, is a terrible nuisance,
• 2:48:30
Speaker 13: but it's nice not to have to worry yes, said
• 2:48:33
Speaker 13: dab Dab, who was toasting muffins for his tea. It
• 2:48:36
Speaker 13: is indeed. And when the winter came again and the
• 2:48:40
Speaker 13: snow flew against the kitchen window, the doctor and his
• 2:48:43
Speaker 13: animals would sit round the big warm fire after supper,
• 2:48:47
Speaker 13: and he would read aloud to them out of his books.
• 2:48:50
Speaker 13: But far away in Africa, where the monkeys chattered in
• 2:48:53
Speaker 13: the palm trees before they went to bed under the
• 2:48:55
Speaker 13: big yellow moon, they would say to one another, I
• 2:48:59
Speaker 13: wonder what the good Man's doing now over there in
• 2:49:02
Speaker 13: the land of the white men. Do you think he
• 2:49:04
Speaker 13: ever will come back? And Polynesia would squeak out from
• 2:49:08
Speaker 13: the vines. I think he will. I guess he will.
• 2:49:12
Speaker 13: I hope he will. And then the crocodile would grunt
• 2:49:15
Speaker 13: up at them from the black mud of the river.
• 2:49:18
Speaker 13: I'm sure he will go to sleep. End of chapter
• 2:49:24
Speaker 13: twenty one, end of the Story of Doctor Doolittle by
• 2:49:28
  Speaker 13: Hugh Lofting.
