- 0:05Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, Welcome, welcome, Welcome. It's Thursday.
- 0:08Speaker 1: It's Car Talk and we have Jason in with us
- 0:11Speaker 1: here from Douneos Toyote and you brought Frians.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Hey, good morning everybody in Bartlesville. It's kind of an
- 0:17Speaker 2: overcast morning, and glad to be here taking Brad's place
- 0:22Speaker 2: this morning while he is in Ohio celebrating young son
- 0:26Speaker 2: Bodie's birthday. I think the big one nine.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Wow.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, very exciting. And I have an interesting guest with
- 0:36Speaker 2: me this morning, Tom, I have Mary Cantrell from Tulsa
- 0:40Speaker 2: Community College. But before we jump into talking all things education, let's.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Talk cars for a little bit, little bit. Yeah.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So, first of all, you know, I've been threatening to
- 0:53Speaker 2: do it for like years and years and years, but
- 0:56Speaker 2: I finally pulled the trigger on a new car. You did,
- 1:00Speaker 2: did Tom. It's downstairs in the parking lot. It is
- 1:02Speaker 2: a brand new Toyota Cross Hybrid. So it is awesome.
- 1:10Speaker 2: It is a what I would call a small crossover.
- 1:17Speaker 2: It gets it's first of all, it's super comfortable, great
- 1:23Speaker 2: gas mileage. The hybrid engine kicks in. You don't even
- 1:27Speaker 2: notice you're driving around town at forty miles an hour
- 1:31Speaker 2: and you look down and you're like, hey, I'm driving
- 1:33Speaker 2: all electric, and then you speed up a little bit
- 1:38Speaker 2: and you don't notice and you're just zooming along on gas.
- 1:41Speaker 3: It is a great vehicle we have.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I think we've got another one coming in in the
- 1:49Speaker 2: next day or two at Dungeons. Definitely worth a test
- 1:53Speaker 2: drive if you're out in the market for a new vehicle.
- 1:57Speaker 2: We also have some really really good used car inventory
- 2:02Speaker 2: right now. Tom on the lot today. We've got everything
- 2:07Speaker 2: from well, we've got a couple of BMW's I think
- 2:12Speaker 2: that you've often mentioned that you wanted to be a
- 2:15Speaker 2: BMW driver.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Well, yeah, one time. So you know, they get sixty five,
- 2:22Speaker 1: it'll fit me right. So we've got of like the
- 2:24Speaker 1: bigger cars to kind of easy and easy out.
- 2:27Speaker 2: We've got We've actually got a twenty sixteen five thirty
- 2:34Speaker 2: five real wheel drive Beamer, gorgeous little car and priced
- 2:41Speaker 2: real reasonably thirteen thousand dollars. We have a pre owned
- 2:47Speaker 2: twenty twenty three BMW X five. Now that's that is
- 2:51Speaker 2: a really slick looking car. It is another crossover, kind
- 2:58Speaker 2: of a pretty crossover. And then we have over a
- 3:04Speaker 2: dozen used Toyotas on the lot. We're really doing a
- 3:08Speaker 2: good job of finding lovingly used, one owner Toyotas.
- 3:15Speaker 3: That run forever, that do run forever we bring them in.
- 3:20Speaker 2: We do a one hundred and thirty five point vehicle
- 3:23Speaker 2: inspection when we purchase a car before we put it
- 3:26Speaker 2: out on the lot, and that includes, you know, doing
- 3:30Speaker 2: things like replacing tires, brake pads, fluids. One of the
- 3:37Speaker 2: advantages of buying from Dungeons Toyota on new vehicles is
- 3:42Speaker 2: you know that you're going to get a quality vehicle.
- 3:45Speaker 3: We don't put anything out on the lot that is
- 3:51Speaker 3: not a lot worthy.
- 3:52Speaker 1: That's true, and it's a high mark. You got to
- 3:54Speaker 1: meet the mark to be a lot worthy.
- 3:56Speaker 2: It definitely is a high mark. So another thing I
- 4:00Speaker 2: should mention is the number of new cars that we have.
- 4:06Speaker 2: We are stocking up on Tundras and Tacomas, and over
- 4:13Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks, Tom, I think Brian is
- 4:16Speaker 2: making some serious deals on those tundras. I can't mention
- 4:22Speaker 2: pricing over the radio or the Toyota police will come
- 4:25Speaker 2: and get me, but well, under anything that.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Toyota wants me to advertise.
- 4:32Speaker 2: If you're in the mode for a great, reliable, last
- 4:39Speaker 2: year forever kind of pickup truck. The Tundra is definitely there,
- 4:44Speaker 2: the Coma is definitely there. And then Tom, we have
- 4:48Speaker 2: a couple of what Toyota is calling the I Force
- 4:52Speaker 2: Max engine. So this is both in the Toyota Tacoma
- 4:58Speaker 2: and the Toyota Pria Toyota Tundra Rocket for a Prius.
- 5:07Speaker 2: This is a hybrid engine. Uh And again you just
- 5:11Speaker 2: never you don't realize that the hybrid is engaging. But
- 5:17Speaker 2: they have managed to take this engine and get uh
- 5:22Speaker 2: eight cylinder performance out of a four cylinder hybrid engine.
- 5:26Speaker 2: It's got more torque, it's got more power. It it's
- 5:32Speaker 2: pretty impressive. Uh I. I don't know whether you pop
- 5:37Speaker 2: the hood on cars very often, Tom, but this engine
- 5:43Speaker 2: looks like it came from the future.
- 5:46Speaker 3: Very cool.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So come check out the Toyota Tundras and the Toyota Tacomas.
- 5:51Speaker 2: iTunes Toyota, and of course we've got some great finance
- 5:55Speaker 2: specials and least uh specials going on on new vehicle.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Gotta tell you, Tom.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Like I said, I just bought the Toyota Cross, the
- 6:06Speaker 2: Girl Across.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Financed through dungeons. I went to my credit union.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I went to the bank that wound up financing me,
- 6:16Speaker 2: and everybody was quoting me around six six and a
- 6:19Speaker 2: half percent, climate I was able to swing five percent better.
- 6:27Speaker 2: It's really kind of a cool deal. We don't mark
- 6:31Speaker 2: up our loans. Brad will talk to you a little
- 6:35Speaker 2: bit more about this. It's it's kind of some complicated
- 6:39Speaker 2: financial stuff, but we pass along the discounted rates that
- 6:45Speaker 2: we receive to the customers instead of taking those discounted rates,
- 6:50Speaker 2: adding a percent.
- 6:51Speaker 3: Or two and putting it in our pocket. Exactly exactly.
- 6:55Speaker 2: It's just another way that we're trying to help out
- 6:56Speaker 2: the community, help out our customers.
- 7:00Speaker 1: One thing Brad was talking about too, is that Toyota
- 7:03Speaker 1: isn't too worried about these tariffs. In fact, they're not
- 7:08Speaker 1: terrified at.
- 7:09Speaker 3: All, not quite yet.
- 7:12Speaker 1: You know.
- 7:13Speaker 2: It's it is a question what is going to happen,
- 7:17Speaker 2: But at this.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Point, Toyota the business.
- 7:20Speaker 2: It's exactly so, Toyota is not raising prices yet, at
- 7:25Speaker 2: least not yet, and we are seeing, you know, there
- 7:30Speaker 2: are some of the other manufacturers who, yes, they have
- 7:34Speaker 2: added the tariff line, the twenty five percent tariff line
- 7:38Speaker 2: to the bottom line on their vehicles. And I just
- 7:42Speaker 2: don't know what to say about that, But I do
- 7:45Speaker 2: know what to say about the Tundras.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Tom, Is that right now?
- 7:50Speaker 2: If you come into Dungeon's Toyota for a Toyota Tundra,
- 7:56Speaker 2: you can get financing as low as zero point nine
- 7:59Speaker 2: percent for thirty six months or two point nine to
- 8:04Speaker 2: nine for seventy two, which is better than a kick
- 8:07Speaker 2: in the pants. Or they also have a cash offer
- 8:11Speaker 2: on the Tundras which is three thousand dollars off. And
- 8:17Speaker 2: if you look at our website you'll notice that we
- 8:21Speaker 2: have one thunder that was driven by our manager Brian.
- 8:29Speaker 2: It's a heck of a deal. We've got it marked
- 8:31Speaker 2: over ten thousand dollars off right now, Tom, I think
- 8:34Speaker 2: it has a couple hundred miles on it. It still
- 8:37Speaker 2: qualifies as a new vehicle. You get all of the
- 8:42Speaker 2: Toyota two year warranty and the benefits of buying a
- 8:49Speaker 2: new car, including the rebate which helps take it down
- 8:54Speaker 2: to over ten grand off. Well, how you like that?
- 8:58Speaker 2: I love that that? So let's introduce our guests this morning. So, Tom,
- 9:05Speaker 2: this is Mary Cantrell. Her Mary is the George Kaiser
- 9:12Speaker 2: and dowed chair of concurrent enrollment at Tulsa Community College.
- 9:18Speaker 4: No, he didn't even get the title right. It's I
- 9:20Speaker 4: am the George Kaiser Family Foundation and Dowed Faculty Chair
- 9:24Speaker 4: for Dual Credit. It's the longest title at Tulsa Community College.
- 9:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Congratulations, Mary.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So what you do is you make a lot of
- 9:31Speaker 1: families pretty darn happy.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Yeah, what is concurrent enrollment?
- 9:35Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 9:35Speaker 4: Well, thank you for having me here to talk about it,
- 9:37Speaker 4: because I am very passionate about dual credit program At TCC.
- 9:42Speaker 4: We serve about one hundred and fifty six schools.
- 9:46Speaker 5: We have.
- 9:48Speaker 4: A very small but mighty staff, and we just this
- 9:51Speaker 4: year started a program with Bartlesville High School and it
- 9:55Speaker 4: is a great partnership. We love working with Bartlesville High School.
- 10:00Speaker 4: We've started off with just offering dual credit classes and
- 10:03Speaker 4: those classes are free to students, so students can start
- 10:07Speaker 4: taking college level classes in high school and get college
- 10:11Speaker 4: credit that transfers to any area university, transfers to TU
- 10:17Speaker 4: transfers to many out of state schools as well. These
- 10:19Speaker 4: are those gen ed courses that students, regardless of what
- 10:23Speaker 4: degree they're going to take, are whatever they're going to
- 10:27Speaker 4: major in, they're going to take these courses, right, so
- 10:30Speaker 4: it's free to them. We also have we have several
- 10:34Speaker 4: programs in our dual credit. Through our dual credit program,
- 10:37Speaker 4: several different programs for students can earn up to a
- 10:40Speaker 4: year's worth of college credit for free. They can earn
- 10:44Speaker 4: an associate degree. And by the time they graduate high school.
- 10:49Speaker 3: This is all in high school.
- 10:51Speaker 4: They do this all in high school. We have this year,
- 10:54Speaker 4: we have one hundred and thirty seven students walking across
- 10:58Speaker 4: the TCC stage at commencement.
- 11:01Speaker 5: High school students.
- 11:02Speaker 4: They're actually getting their TCC degree before they get their
- 11:06Speaker 4: high school diploma because our graduation is before their high
- 11:09Speaker 4: school graduation.
- 11:10Speaker 3: My goodness, so great.
- 11:12Speaker 2: So this is opening up a door where Bartlesville High
- 11:15Speaker 2: School students can take Tulsa Community College classes without leaving
- 11:22Speaker 2: the campus.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yes, right, so we have online courses. We do have.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Our Dual Credit coordinator for Bartlesville comes to the high
- 11:31Speaker 4: school campus several times. She brings the TCC advisor to
- 11:35Speaker 4: talk to these students and make sure they're taking classes
- 11:38Speaker 4: that lead them toward that degree and helps them get enrolled,
- 11:43Speaker 4: helps them apply, make sure they meet the prerequisites for
- 11:46Speaker 4: the classes that they're going to take. And so the
- 11:50Speaker 4: first graduating class from Bartlesville High School will be twenty
- 11:54Speaker 4: twenty seven. We expect to have a small cohort for
- 11:58Speaker 4: this first graduating class. Our dual credit to college degree program,
- 12:03Speaker 4: that's the one where students can get that that associate's
- 12:06Speaker 4: degree sixty hours. They'll be starting that program next this fall.
- 12:13Speaker 5: They'll be starting that program.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Students will So if you have a high school student
- 12:17Speaker 2: in Bartlesville High School, you could enroll that student in
- 12:23Speaker 2: concurrent enrollment through Tulsa Community College, correct, and that kid
- 12:27Speaker 2: can earn an associate's degree, get the first two years
- 12:30Speaker 2: of college knocked out before they graduate.
- 12:33Speaker 5: High school, right, right?
- 12:35Speaker 3: And community How was this when I was going kidding?
- 12:39Speaker 4: So, yeah, a lot of students, I mean the AP program,
- 12:42Speaker 4: A lot of students want to do AP. Right, And
- 12:44Speaker 4: that's a great program. It does, you know, that's a
- 12:46Speaker 4: way to get the college credit. But for dual credit
- 12:49Speaker 4: you don't. There's no high stakes test. You take the course.
- 12:54Speaker 4: You work with community college professors. And the thing about
- 12:58Speaker 4: a community college is our focus as faculty at a
- 13:01Speaker 4: community college is teaching, you know, that is we don't
- 13:04Speaker 4: do I mean, some of us do have our own
- 13:07Speaker 4: research agenda and that sort of thing, but we really
- 13:09Speaker 4: focus on teaching and community colleges are really especially good
- 13:14Speaker 4: at dealing with diverse students, students who come with all
- 13:19Speaker 4: levels of preparation. You know, some people, you know, struggle
- 13:24Speaker 4: a lot in high school, but they get to TCC
- 13:26Speaker 4: and we can help them get back on track to
- 13:28Speaker 4: get that degree. So it's a really great opportunity for
- 13:32Speaker 4: high school students. Part of my job is chair is
- 13:35Speaker 4: I get to teach these students. I teach just some
- 13:39Speaker 4: amazing kids who who you know, they may struggle comp one,
- 13:44Speaker 4: that's what I teach. Nobody loves to take that required
- 13:46Speaker 4: English course, but they end up realizing their own potential
- 13:52Speaker 4: as college students. They understand that they have the tenacity,
- 13:57Speaker 4: the perseverance to do college. So it build confidence with
- 14:02Speaker 4: the students. It's just a really rewarding, rewarding teaching gig
- 14:08Speaker 4: for MI.
- 14:09Speaker 2: I can imagine and are the students because they're they're
- 14:14Speaker 2: high school students and they've basically volunteered to take these
- 14:19Speaker 2: college classes, are they more engaged?
- 14:24Speaker 4: Yeah, you know some of them are. Because it is
- 14:26Speaker 4: a choice, right they are. They are making that choice.
- 14:29Speaker 4: Sometimes their parents are making that choice for them, right,
- 14:32Speaker 4: but but they they are usually very interested in getting
- 14:37Speaker 4: that head start.
- 14:39Speaker 5: We know too.
- 14:39Speaker 4: I mean, this research shows that if you do not
- 14:43Speaker 4: have some sort of post high school education, your earning
- 14:48Speaker 4: potential is not near what it could be even with
- 14:53Speaker 4: just a two year degree. We have most of our
- 14:57Speaker 4: students who do the dual credit to college degree, they
- 15:00Speaker 4: transfer on to a four year school to go pursue
- 15:04Speaker 4: whatever degree it is that they want at that four
- 15:06Speaker 4: year institution.
- 15:07Speaker 5: But we realize that some of our.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Students just they don't they want a workforce credential. So
- 15:12Speaker 4: we also have a program called DASH that is it
- 15:17Speaker 4: gets students to earn applied science degrees in high school
- 15:22Speaker 4: and these degrees are put them right in the workforce
- 15:26Speaker 4: so they can start working at a lucrative job right
- 15:31Speaker 4: right after high school.
- 15:32Speaker 5: With this degree.
- 15:33Speaker 3: And the costs to families.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Yeah, it's such a good deal. There's no cheaper way
- 15:40Speaker 4: to do education. There is no cost to the there
- 15:44Speaker 4: is no cost for the state reimburses TCC for eighteen
- 15:50Speaker 4: hours for seniors, nine hours for juniors. TCC also provides
- 15:54Speaker 4: some additional waivers for juniors, so it is the first
- 16:00Speaker 4: thirty hours in our in our high school plus one
- 16:03Speaker 4: program that's where they get that one year thirty credit
- 16:06Speaker 4: hours that's free to students.
- 16:09Speaker 3: That is easy.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Yeah, and the other the other programs are If you
- 16:13Speaker 4: compare how much these the dual credit to college degree
- 16:18Speaker 4: program costs students, it is significantly less.
- 16:22Speaker 2: Well, even credits now at OU or OSU are not cheap.
- 16:27Speaker 2: And this is this is such a great way for
- 16:31Speaker 2: a kid to get a head start, come out either
- 16:35Speaker 2: with skills that they can take to a job immediately
- 16:40Speaker 2: or skills that they can take to a university and
- 16:44Speaker 2: basically skip paying a university that first two years.
- 16:49Speaker 4: We have students who have finished their four year degree
- 16:53Speaker 4: in under three years. Then they go on to med
- 16:57Speaker 4: school or you know, at advanced degree. It's and it
- 17:01Speaker 4: saves their families so much money. And yeah, we're just
- 17:06Speaker 4: really it's a growing program. It's it's a national program,
- 17:11Speaker 4: and it is the research on dual credit programs nationally
- 17:15Speaker 4: just shows that students who start taking any college classes
- 17:19Speaker 4: while they're in high school are that much more likely
- 17:22Speaker 4: to be persistent once they get to college. Yeah, they're
- 17:25Speaker 4: going to finish, they're going to get that degree and
- 17:28Speaker 4: less time, and yeah, it just builds the confidence the
- 17:32Speaker 4: study skills they need to be successful in college.
- 17:35Speaker 2: So that is really impressive. So if a parent or
- 17:39Speaker 2: a grandparent or a student is listening this morning, how
- 17:43Speaker 2: do they get more information?
- 17:44Speaker 4: So, oh, I hope they will go to TULSACC dot
- 17:48Speaker 4: edu and you can find our dual credit programs under
- 17:52Speaker 4: academic programs we also have. You can email dual credit
- 17:57Speaker 4: at Tulsa CC dot edu.
- 18:00Speaker 5: I can get to the phone number two. Let me
- 18:02Speaker 5: put it up.
- 18:03Speaker 4: Okay, if you want to call, you can call nine
- 18:06Speaker 4: one eight five nine five forty seven five and somebody
- 18:10Speaker 4: there can answer questions about how to get started. There's
- 18:14Speaker 4: information on our website about all the different programs there
- 18:19Speaker 4: you can start applying. Students can start applying right there
- 18:22Speaker 4: on the website. And again, we have such a great
- 18:25Speaker 4: relationship with Barlowsville High School that the counselors and the
- 18:29Speaker 4: principal there will know more about that too. If a
- 18:33Speaker 4: student wants to ask at the high school, what.
- 18:37Speaker 2: A great opportunity for Barlowsville students.
- 18:40Speaker 4: It is? It is, it is. We are really excited.
- 18:44Speaker 4: I look forward to you know, commencements. Long we sit
- 18:47Speaker 4: there and hear all those names called faculty do. But
- 18:50Speaker 4: it is a joy to see all those high school
- 18:52Speaker 4: students walking across the stage with that degree.
- 18:55Speaker 5: It is just such a rewarding part of my job.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I would imagine. So Tulsa Community College right here in Bartlesville, Oklahoma,
- 19:06Speaker 2: at Bartlesville High that that that is something. So one
- 19:14Speaker 2: more quick question, So how long have you been in
- 19:17Speaker 2: this teaching game?
- 19:18Speaker 5: Mary cant Oh, I'm so glad you asked.
- 19:20Speaker 1: You just graduated college.
- 19:21Speaker 5: I started when I was twelve.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Now I've been teaching thirty five years at Tulsa Community College,
- 19:30Speaker 4: and it is it is a great place to work.
- 19:33Speaker 4: It is a great asset to our to this part
- 19:36Speaker 4: of Oklahoma. It is really for a while it was
- 19:40Speaker 4: the only state funded education you know in Tulsa. But
- 19:44Speaker 4: it's still the best and it's still the best place
- 19:46Speaker 4: to go. Even if you're a high school graduate. You
- 19:49Speaker 4: should look into TCC because we have so many great
- 19:52Speaker 4: opportunities and the cost is so much less than at
- 19:56Speaker 4: a four year I always said to my son, if
- 19:59Speaker 4: he wanted to stay in the state, he was going
- 20:01Speaker 4: to do his first two years at TCC because classes
- 20:04Speaker 4: are smaller. Teachers, like I said, the faculty are focused
- 20:08Speaker 4: on teaching. We really engage with students at Tulsa Community
- 20:13Speaker 4: College our online offerings too, which is what a lot
- 20:16Speaker 4: of the Bartlesville students are doing. The online courses. They
- 20:20Speaker 4: are really excellent courses. A lot of people think, oh online,
- 20:25Speaker 4: the pandemic, you know, may turn some people off to that,
- 20:28Speaker 4: but no, we have really great online program at TCC
- 20:32Speaker 4: so that students can have some flexibility to do those courses.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So so yeah, I've been there. I've seen a lot
- 20:38Speaker 4: of changes in my time there.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Well as they say thank you for your service, my
- 20:45Speaker 2: good thirty five years Mary Cantrell with Tulsa Community College
- 20:50Speaker 2: talking about concurrent enrollment in Bartlesville High School and boy,
- 20:57Speaker 2: I'm going to see what we can do at Dungees
- 21:01Speaker 2: Toyota to help support this this great program here in Barlosville.
- 21:08Speaker 2: And speaking of Dungeons Toyota, Tom, Yeah, the weather.
- 21:13Speaker 3: What about it. It's gonna rain, and then it's going
- 21:16Speaker 3: to rain, and then it's range weather man.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Yeah, back when my tummy was flat, my hair was
- 21:23Speaker 1: black long.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Wait.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Wait, you know if you're driving around right now and
- 21:31Speaker 2: you've got floppy windshield wipers or you're driving around with
- 21:36Speaker 2: one headlight.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Or your tires are a little bit bald. Basically, you're
- 21:41Speaker 3: a ticket waiting to happen. Accident waiting to happen kind
