- 0:04This is Kevin's Sports Firite daily here on one oh five point nine Radio Folkston,
- 0:10bringing you the sports show from our Folkston and Hive region. On today's
- 0:22show we have a roundup of local cricket scores, a report on the Folkston
- 0:30coastal ten k, some local football news, updates on the Race for Life
- 0:41and the Cliff Top Challenge, and a report on a team of Blister sisters
- 0:50who ran from London to Paris, and a story about our very own drive
- 0:54time presenter Tim James to recycling from Frankfurt in Germany to Folks them raising money
- 1:03for local charities. And we'll find a few more sportish snippets thrown in for
- 1:15good measure. So let's start the show with the feeling and I love it
- 1:27when you call found of sweet Carried from two thousand and seven. They are
- 2:01from a Freemason's bailey zook and a song called Uninvited. Now. Last weekend
- 2:07as a Bank holiday weekend and has served up a mixture of weather. However,
- 2:12Saturday was a lovely sunny day for cricket with all our local teams in
- 2:15action. Folks on first eleven won the toss and decided to bat against Sidcup
- 2:20and they made two hundred and seventy three runs in their fifty overs, losing
- 2:23eight wickets. Rueman Ahmed making one hundred and fifteen and ex England international James
- 2:30Treadwell sixty one. Sidcup could only manage one hundred and seventy five, so
- 2:35Folks then winning the game by ninety eight runs. This puts Folks on top
- 2:38of the table. Harvell from Gravesend are second, both clubs having played and
- 2:44won three games each. Now at the moment, I can only think that
- 2:46folkst on the top of the table because f comes before each and the alphabet,
- 2:51as both teams have identical records. This week is at away fixture against
- 2:55Old Wilsonians, which means a trip very near to Bromley Hawkins. You were
- 3:00at home to Why who won the toss and decided to bat, making one
- 3:04hundred and fifty four all out. Hawkins then took to the crease and made
- 3:07one hundred and fifty seven, winning the game by two wickets. This Saturday
- 3:13there once again at home, this time Sheppey are the visitors. Hive Cricket
- 3:16Club traveled to Egerton. They won the toss, batted first and made one
- 3:21hundred and ninety eight runs. They then bowled Edsiton out for one hundred and
- 3:24forty one, winning the game by fifty seven. Next Saturday, Hi They're
- 3:30at home to Kennington. Meanwhile, in the local derby between Saltwood and hythe
- 3:35Green, the Green won the toss and decided to put Salward into bat,
- 3:38who made one hundred and seventy four runs. The Green then made one hundred
- 3:42and seventy seven, winning the match by six wickets. Next Saturday, hythe
- 3:46Green are away to Willsboro and Salward are at home to Tendon. In a
- 3:52close game at Sipton Park, the Sibs batted first and made one hundred and
- 3:54ninety nine, then visitors Borstal from Rochester made two hundred one, winning the
- 4:00game by two wickets. Now, all these clubs play in. All these
- 4:04clubs in our region play in the Kent Cricket League, which is huge.
- 4:10It consists of thirty divisions spread regionally over the county. However, please remember
- 4:15some of the big clubs can have as many as five or six teams and
- 4:19once you get to the Premier Division you could be playing anywhere in Kent.
- 4:24Now let me give you a rundown of how it works. There's a Premier
- 4:27Division, a championship. We've got divisions one to four, then from Division
- 4:32five down to Division fourteen. Believe it or not, this has subdivisions.
- 4:39So I know it's early days, but here's a rundown of how our teams
- 4:42are doing so far. Folks in first eleven are in the top spot in
- 4:46Division one, walk into top of Division eight in the Shepherd section. Sipton
- 4:51Park are eighth in Division five in the Hurricane section and in Division nine.
- 4:58In the Shepherd section we have four teams Hive Cricket Club, a third hith
- 5:03Green of fifth, Saltward to seventh and the Folkston Third eleven are ninth.
- 5:09Now throughout the county, all these divisions have ten teams. Now, last
- 5:14bit of trivia. The subdivisions are Hurricane and Spitfire which need no explanation,
- 5:19and the other three subsections have the surnames of three former Kent players, John
- 5:26Shepherd, Alan Knott and Derek Underwood. So there it goes. So a
- 5:30little bit of a cricket overload there, But is summer is the cricket season
- 5:33and it'd be interesting to see where those teams finish up at the end of
- 5:39the season. Okay, time for a bit of music now, James Morrison,
- 5:42and you give me something Folkeston's local radio station, Radio Folkston. Fine,
- 5:58you came back, take that and back for good. There. That's
- 6:03a bit of a mum's favorite these days, isn't it? Take that they've
- 6:09been back on the road again. They were up at the O two and
- 6:11a friend of mine she went up to see them with her friends, right
- 6:15and the Beg gang of if you like senior ladies. And then a couple
- 6:18of days later she went back up there with a daughter. So that is
- 6:21what you call fan base, isn't it. Yeah, So they're still going
- 6:26and they're still making some great chunes. Well, now let's talk about the
- 6:30Coastal ten K last Sunday. It was the Folks in Coastal ten K,
- 6:34organized by race director Ray Johnson. Well, the weather during the race was
- 6:40sunny and breezy. The race started at ten o'clock, but when I began
- 6:44setting up my bits and pieces of pa stuff at seven o'clock it was cloudy,
- 6:48raining. It was miserable. Luckily for the runners and spectators alike,
- 6:53it all cleared up because as you probably know down on that lower prom if
- 6:57the weather's bad there's little or no shelter. They were around thirty in the
- 7:01children's race which get off at US nine, and then nine hundred and twenty
- 7:06two finishes in the senior race, which was won by Nick Collins from Ashford
- 7:11District Road Running Club in a time of thirty three minutes thirty six seconds.
- 7:15Toby Smith from Deal tri Club was second just forty seconds later. First male
- 7:20runner home for the Folkston Club was Prakash Gurum and first female home from the
- 7:27club was his wife Aanda. What a great running duo they must make,
- 7:30by the way. The win female was Laura Smith from Hallam Sheer Harriers in
- 7:35a time of thirty five minutes twelve seconds. She loved the race as it
- 7:40was so flat her, not like her home area which is a hilly Sheffield.
- 7:45And I just got to say that the it even Meridium were down there
- 7:49and they put some lovely pictures on the Meridian News. So if you get
- 7:54a chance to check it out on the old catch up TV you might see
- 7:58yourself if you were down there. Now. Some South Kent Harriers took part
- 8:01the first runner male home for the Harriers was Chris Cook in thirty eight forty
- 8:07six and the first female was a Jennifer Spilane in fifty two minutes forty eight.
- 8:13Folks and Running and Athletics Club came away with both the men's and the
- 8:18ladies team prizes and due to the flatness of the course and the weather being
- 8:22kind I say kind. It was a bit breezy, but I mean it
- 8:24wasn't too bad. It could have been a lot worse down there. There
- 8:28were many pbs. One excellent performance came from former guests to the Sports Show
- 8:33Louisa Eid who came first in her age group female vet forty five. Now
- 8:37she'd run all that London Marathon, fantastic event, and she still told me
- 8:41that she was nervous before the start of the little Old ten k. Now
- 8:46the race celebrated its thirteenth birthday this year and is attracting runners not only locally
- 8:50but from all over the country. And it was hoping to raise thirty thousand
- 8:54pounds well for various charities. Okay, now coming up, we've got a
- 9:01track. It's called One Night in Heaven by m People and ever listened to
- 9:05this, Listen to this, lovely voice of the lead singer, Heather Small
- 9:31One Night in Heaven. They're from M people. Now. I've often wondered
- 9:35what the M stands for. No one ever asks it today, but they
- 9:37just it just rolls off the tongue end people. Now. Some of the
- 9:41other great tracks they made moving on up, Search for a Hero and one
- 9:46song, one song that I never thought would you'd be able to do a
- 9:50cover was Itchy Koo Park, but she made a great job of that.
- 9:54Okay, now what we've got We've got some football news now, Well,
- 9:58there's not much football news going to around at the moment, as managers talk
- 10:01on phones trying to get players signed on groundsmen and volunteers carry out jobs to
- 10:05spruce up their stadiums. But I've got a couple of football snippets to tell
- 10:09you about. Hawkins Town departed company with their first team manager Mike Sheridan,
- 10:16assistant Dan Porter, and first team coach Liam Dixon. Manager Mike Sherion Sheridan
- 10:22issued a statement and it seemed he'd taken the team as far as they can
- 10:26go and wishes now to stand down and seek a new challenge, remembering they
- 10:31did finish second last season, so it all seems quite amicable and this now
- 10:35gives Hawkins time to start looking for a new management team. And before the
- 10:39end was even dry when I was writing this report, I discovered that they
- 10:43Hawkins had moved very quickly and announced the new manager, Andrew Crush has been
- 10:48at the Helm for Dealtown Reserves for the last two years with incredible success and
- 10:54takes over from Mike Sheridan with immediate effect. This has come a very good
- 10:58time in the football season as it gives the new manager time to get to
- 11:01know his players and vice versa. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Joe Coleman has decided to
- 11:07leave Folkston Now. He decided this at the beginning of May. Last season
- 11:13Invictible in a couple of new signings, knew goalkeeper signings and Joe was confined
- 11:18to the bench. He stuck it out season, which is a sign of
- 11:20loyalty to the club, but it was announced on the twenty fifth of May
- 11:24that he signed for Hive Town, which I think would be a good signing
- 11:28for Hive as Joe is looking for regular first team football and has now got
- 11:33to prove himself down at Reachfields as he probably wasn't part of Invictor's plans going
- 11:37forward in the meantime, in Victor themselves assigned experienced goalkeeper Johnny Henley from Tunbridge
- 11:43Angels. Okay, so time for a bit of music now and we're going
- 11:46to have zach Abel and what Love is? I might have to lose myself
- 11:54in a bit very well good again, dove camera on there and a bad
- 12:03idea. Okay, So moving on now. So there's that time of year
- 12:09for challenging yourself, stepping outside the box, going the extra mile, you
- 12:13know what I mean. It could be wing walking, a bungee jumping,
- 12:16skydiving. Well, one of our very own presenters has devised his own challenge.
- 12:22Drivetime presenter Tim James has been working on and off in Germany and that
- 12:28has now finished, so he's decided it's time to come home. Well,
- 12:31Tim has decided that he wants to cycle home to folks them from his former
- 12:35workplace, which is actually Frankfurt in Germany. It's six hundred kilometers away.
- 12:41That's about four hundred miles. Yes you heard that right, four hundred miles
- 12:46now. Tim set off from Frankfurt last Wednesday and plans to make the trip
- 12:50back weather dependent over the next few days. Now we're probably taking more than
- 12:56a few days. That might be a week. You never know, will
- 12:58we ever see him again? Now, he's raising money and awareness for several
- 13:03local causes and they are as follows, the Dover Counseling Service, the Shed
- 13:09which is in HIH which helps people with disabilities and learning difficulties, the Folks
- 13:13in Rainbow Center which helps families experience deprivation and hardship. And one example is
- 13:20the food Bank. Folks to Music and our very own radio Folks to them.
- 13:24Now, Tim has a just given page which I will post on my
- 13:28Kevin Daily Facebook page and it will also appear on the Radio Folks and page
- 13:33of course. Now if you'd like to support Tim, he would set himself
- 13:37a target of twenty five hundred pound, which now stands and the last time
- 13:41I looked it was six hundred and sixty pounds. So cycling all that way
- 13:45from I mean, he's doing it on his own. It's not like a
- 13:46sort of organized trip. You know, he's probably got to work out his
- 13:50own stops, and if he's got a puncture, he's got to get off
- 13:52the bike and do it himself. Under he really is quite a daunting challenge,
- 13:56so good luck to see him. I'm sure we're here. More about
- 14:00that as the reports come through. Okay, let's move on now, and
- 14:03we've got a song or a group is just says here a Monika five point
- 14:09nine, the sound of Folkstone Radio Folkstone, Annie Lennox there walking on Broken
- 14:26Glass and another excellent female vocals vocalists. You know, I think I'd love
- 14:33to do well at least half an hour's spell where if you could pick out
- 14:37the you know, really strong female vocalists. We've had Hea a Small What
- 14:41a great voice she's got there, go Annie Lennox, people like Tina Turner,
- 14:45Celine Dion and one of my favorite and I really really wished I Tina.
- 14:48She was down at the Leedes Cliff Hall, and back in the day
- 14:52I was working, it was Alison Murie and what a powerful voice she had.
- 14:56And it's just, I don't know, there's just something about strong female
- 15:01voices like right, So some more summer charity eventues now. First of all,
- 15:07well done to the Blister Sister runners, who are Joe Bonner, Luise
- 15:11Leggett, Tiker Barrow, Sarah Walker and Becky Young. Now, last week,
- 15:16these determined five ladies out from London from London Wimbledon Tennis Club in fact,
- 15:22and each ran a half a marathon a day for four days and ended
- 15:26up finishing crossing the line together underneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris. I mean
- 15:31they run down to new Haven, got the ferry across. There was no
- 15:35pulsh hotels. I've seen the pictures. It was just like camping overnight wherever
- 15:41they were. Now their brave effort raised an awesome three three hundred and forty
- 15:46five pound for two charities, Parkinson's UK and SAFFA which stands for Soldiers,
- 15:52Sailors and Airman's Families Association. So congratulations to you all, to all the
- 15:58blistered sisters, I really hope to chut with you soon a NAVA chat.
- 16:02Now, the Cancer Research UK Race for Life comes to focus on June the
- 16:06ninth on the Lees. This year sees three options, a three K,
- 16:10a five K and a ten k and don't forget you can walk, jog
- 16:12or run, it doesn't matter and they all start at ten thirty. Now
- 16:18we've lost count of how many years myself and warm up Lady Joe Thompson have
- 16:22been hosting this event and I know it's more than twenty it's probably knocking on
- 16:26for twenty five years now, so why not just check it out online.
- 16:30It's a family event, you know, you can bring the kids, bring
- 16:33your husband with you and raise some money and we can all try to help
- 16:37stamp out this terrible disease. Now. Just a week later, I should
- 16:41be on the mic at the sold out Clifftop Challenge in Deal to celebrate ten
- 16:45years of raising money for breast cancer now and I look forward to catching up
- 16:49with the many runners from Folkston and I have who support this event. Clifftop
- 16:55Challenge was started a decade ago by Chantel Rashbrook, who herself was diagoned with
- 17:00breast cancer but she still loads a very active, full on life. The
- 17:04event finishes on the Green at Walmart on Saturday the fifteenth June, and if
- 17:08you're not running, they just come along and support the day and listen to
- 17:11some live music. It really has got a kind of a festival carnival atmosphere,
- 17:15you know, you really really to come along, just spend a day
- 17:19there, bring a picnic, that's what people do and they even like hire
- 17:25tables out and which all the money raised goes to Breast Cancer nowt So what
- 17:30you need to do is just put Clifftop Challenge twenty twenty four into the search
- 17:33box for all the information, including a very moving YouTube clip which will make
- 17:38you want to contribute something to the day Park run this week at the Folks
- 17:44and Park Run where there isn't one for some reason I can't remember why.
- 17:47There's something else going on up the lease, so no Folks in the Park
- 17:49run. The Dover one was canceled last week, and it happens it's going
- 17:53to be canceled every Bank holiday, isn't it. The traffic was horrendous.
- 17:59There's no way that people could get into the dock to get to Europe and
- 18:06let alone get to the waterside front or as they call it, waterfront.
- 18:11That's it. I always call it just a Dover part run, but it's
- 18:12actually the waterfront. So but there will be one this week. Sorry,
- 18:18I'm getting all tongues idea. There will be a Dover part round this week.
- 18:22We've got a new date for the High Bay Triathlon that was canceled recently.
- 18:26The new date for that is Sunday, August the eighteenth. Now it's
- 18:30been brought to my attention that a piece of music linked to sport doesn't get
- 18:34the recognition it deserves. Back in nineteen eighty five, double Olympic gold winning
- 18:41decathlete Daily Thompson advertised the sports drink of Lucas aid and to this particular track.
- 18:48So I want to say hello to the team. It's grew Fix morning,
- 18:51Screw Fix. How you doing. I hope you're not taking too much
- 18:53time off to listen to the show. Now. Mark Kadia, better known
- 18:57as CADS, made me aware of this track. Now, Kads is a
- 19:00bit of a mean guitarist himself, and do you know what, I've just
- 19:04been talking to Ross and it looks like there could be an open We haven't
- 19:07really got a heavy metal section, so it's something we might have to think
- 19:11about, Cads. So anyway, I want to say hello to Kads,
- 19:15to Adam, to Jules, to Lewis, to Ryan, to Matt and
- 19:18JP all at Screwfix, as I say goodbye to you lot next week.
- 19:23And so what we're going to do is we're going to listen to I Am
- 19:29Maiden and Fansom of the Opera. Now, it took a little while to
- 19:32find his track, Cads, so get those lads back to work and I
- 19:36will see you sometime at a race.
