- 0:00Speaker 1: And we were talking just a little while ago, or
- 0:02Speaker 1: a bit earlier this morning to Mark Turner, the member
- 0:05Speaker 1: for blame. We know that he'd certainly had an interesting weekend.
- 0:09Speaker 1: He'd been in a situation where it'd helped to arrest
- 0:11Speaker 1: a man who was acting erradically at a service station.
- 0:14Speaker 1: But it sounds as though he's not the only politician
- 0:17Speaker 1: who's been in an interesting situation. Another Polly, Bill Yan
- 0:22Speaker 1: had to climb a tree to escape from a crocodile
- 0:25Speaker 1: while out fishing, and it was well, Bill Yan joins
- 0:29Speaker 1: me on the line right now, Good morning to you, Bill.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Good morning Katie. How are you going?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Oh?
- 0:33Speaker 3: Not too bad mate. When did this happen?
- 0:37Speaker 2: It was Sunday week ago, on National Gone Fishing Day.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I had a bit of time up me sleeve. On
- 0:44Speaker 2: the Sundays, I thought, well, National Gone Fishing Day, Better
- 0:47Speaker 2: get out for a fish.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Well, it sounds like it was easier said than done.
- 0:52Speaker 3: What happened with the crocodile?
- 0:54Speaker 2: Well, oh, went from fishing to tree climbing really quickly.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I've had a bill of bye, I know, out of town,
- 1:03Speaker 2: and I knew I'd get a couple of fish out there,
- 1:06Speaker 2: so I shot out there and fishing off the bank.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I was walking around the back of the bill of
- 1:09Speaker 2: wonging to get to another spot, and walking on a
- 1:12Speaker 2: game trail, so the croc slide and the game trail.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Crock slide, okay, going in under a tree, but it
- 1:17Speaker 2: was pretty old because there was footprints across it. Yes,
- 1:20Speaker 2: But as I went to step over the croc slide,
- 1:22Speaker 2: there was a fair commotion from under the tree. So
- 1:24Speaker 2: it was like there was a bit of a one
- 1:27Speaker 2: of those come to God moments, as you would say,
- 1:29Speaker 2: I can't say what I really said on the radio
- 1:33Speaker 2: and the channel my inner youth and went up straight
- 1:36Speaker 2: up the tree next to me, and that's when the
- 1:38Speaker 2: Mexican standals started.
- 1:40Speaker 3: How long were you then up the tree for a bell?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Well, like, it wasn't up there for really long, cad,
- 1:46Speaker 2: I reckon, it's about five minutes. I was calling the
- 1:48Speaker 2: crocodile all sorts of horrible names and fashion me fishing
- 1:51Speaker 2: and ride and make a noise and trail and sticks
- 1:53Speaker 2: at it, trying to figure out when one of us
- 1:56Speaker 2: was going to move first. But after about five minutes,
- 1:58Speaker 2: the crop sided that it was heading to the Billbong,
- 2:04Speaker 2: so it shot off to the billbong, and I didn't
- 2:06Speaker 2: have to worry about coming up with a plan B
- 2:08Speaker 2: to get out of the tree and get away from them.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Where So whereabouts were you?
- 2:12Speaker 1: And I suppose people will be asking were you too
- 2:14Speaker 1: close to the water or were you being crock wise?
- 2:18Speaker 2: Oh? I know certainly been crockwise. I fished this billboard
- 2:20Speaker 2: quite a few times, and I know there's a really
- 2:22Speaker 2: big crocs there, so I was being extra careful. The
- 2:25Speaker 2: water was law so you could see them in the
- 2:29Speaker 2: water quite easily. But of course this run was anywhere
- 2:32Speaker 2: near the water. It is a long way back from
- 2:34Speaker 2: the billi bong, And at this I had my brains
- 2:36Speaker 2: about me. When I seen the croc slide, went oh,
- 2:39Speaker 2: that's a croc slide. Because if I didn't see that
- 2:42Speaker 2: and hadn't taken the nails of the noise, it may
- 2:44Speaker 2: result into something a little bit different.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Oh, I reckon.
- 2:47Speaker 1: So were you pretty scared or did you sort of
- 2:49Speaker 1: feel as though you're okay once you got up that tree. Oh?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Once I was up the tree, I was pretty okay.
- 2:54Speaker 2: But it was that when that first big noise happened
- 2:57Speaker 2: under tree right beside my left foot. It's just like, oh, oh,
- 3:05Speaker 2: it's time to get out of here in a hurry,
- 3:07Speaker 2: sou up the trail went.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Oh nice. Did you end up going for a fish
- 3:13Speaker 3: after that?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Oh? I did? Yeah, No, I kept fishing. I got
- 3:17Speaker 2: probably about half a dozen barrow. I done pretty good
- 3:19Speaker 2: actually for the day, and I probably dropped about half
- 3:21Speaker 2: a dozen. But I got I got a dog by
- 3:23Speaker 2: this freshy as well to try to eat one of
- 3:26Speaker 2: my barre. And everywhere I went after that, this freshy
- 3:28Speaker 2: stalking up and down the bank kind of get a
- 3:30Speaker 2: cheat feet.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Oh jeez.
- 3:31Speaker 1: A bit different to what it's like in central Australia
- 3:34Speaker 1: where you usually be.
- 3:36Speaker 2: Well, as I said, the lizards down here a little
- 3:39Speaker 2: bit smaller reptiles, not as big as your reptile.
- 3:42Speaker 3: So yeah, interesting.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Time watch it got to watch out for. But you've
- 3:48Speaker 2: got to get out about it. And this bill. It's
- 3:51Speaker 2: just so beautiful out there at the moment, so much,
- 3:55Speaker 2: so much flora and fauner with at the start of
- 3:57Speaker 2: the wet coming in and geese and dark and seeing
- 4:01Speaker 2: heaps of water monitors and it's just it was really nice. Yeah,
- 4:05Speaker 2: apart from the croc, I want to take a piece
- 4:08Speaker 2: out of it.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Apart from being stalked by a crocodile.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Bill, any tips for territories following that ordeal or even visitors, Well, I.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Think the thing to take away from it, Katie, is
- 4:20Speaker 2: that you always got to be careful around the water.
- 4:22Speaker 2: And I always am careful around the water, but particularly
- 4:25Speaker 2: this time here when they're starting to nest, the crops
- 4:28Speaker 2: can be quite a way back from the water. So
- 4:31Speaker 2: that's the one thing I'm going to take away from
- 4:33Speaker 2: it is even though I'm around the waterways I'm being
- 4:36Speaker 2: crop wise along the water's edge, is that they can
- 4:40Speaker 2: be found way way back from the water, and you
- 4:44Speaker 2: need to be looking out and keeping your wits about you,
- 4:47Speaker 2: that's for sure.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I reckon. So it sounds like.
- 4:51Speaker 2: I don't think Leader have forgive me. If I didn't
- 4:53Speaker 2: show up for PARM, I might get in a bit
- 4:54Speaker 2: of trouble.
- 4:55Speaker 3: That's exactly right. Even if it was due to a crocodile,
- 5:00Speaker 3: she'd think that.
- 5:01Speaker 1: She'd probably think you're making it up, Bill, if you said,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know, I couldn't get their duetial crocodile situation.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so sorry, sorry, Boss, I didn't make it
- 5:09Speaker 2: to Palm. I'm still suck up this tree with the crocodile. Yeah,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I don't think I could pull that one off. It's
- 5:15Speaker 2: like the dog ate my homework.
- 5:17Speaker 3: Yeah, that's exactly right.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Oh well, we're pleased that you are all okay, and yeah,
- 5:23Speaker 1: certainly an interesting one. Did your friends and family believe
- 5:28Speaker 1: you at first?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Bill?
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah, well my kids because I know what I'm like
- 5:33Speaker 2: and they've been out fishing with me before, and yeah,
- 5:36Speaker 2: they thought it's just another day in dad's life, that dad,
- 5:39Speaker 2: you'd be crazy. Yeah, they got a good laugh at it.
- 5:42Speaker 2: But the first thing that's did you get any fish?
- 5:44Speaker 3: Oh? Yeah, well that's exactly right.
- 5:46Speaker 1: That was whatever I was wondering Bill, speaking of crazy,
- 5:49Speaker 1: I saw you out there doing Park Run on the
- 5:51Speaker 1: weekend too.
- 5:52Speaker 3: It was a warm one, wasn't it.
- 5:54Speaker 2: For me? Katie was more like park Shuffle. I'm on
- 5:57Speaker 2: a bit of a comeback trail to the run, but yeah, no,
- 6:00Speaker 2: it was pretty steamy out there on Sunday morning. But
- 6:02Speaker 2: it was a great day and I see lots of
- 6:04Speaker 2: people out there on the Espna. It was really good.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I'm looking forward to having in the cracket another one
- 6:08Speaker 2: and maybe actually making the entire five k is running
- 6:12Speaker 2: rather than sort of doing the creep young shuffle ah.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Good stuff. Well, Bill Yane, good to speak with you
- 6:17Speaker 1: this morning. Thank you for having a chat to us
- 6:20Speaker 1: about that situation with the crocodiles.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Katy, thanks for having me on.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Thank you.
