- 0:32First of all, let's introduce today's topic, which is the filter.
- 0:36So I've had a lot of people ask me about the filter and explain it in a way
- 0:42that they can understand.
- 0:43Some people get it and some people don't, but it is very prevalent pretty much in everything.
- 0:49It exists in how you basically see the world around you, sometimes not so truthfully.
- 0:54So let me get into the topic of today, which again is the filter.
- 0:59And the title of this podcast is basically the filter, why we can't prove ghosts
- 1:05exist, even if they're real.
- 1:08Okay, so what if the reason we can't prove ghosts exist is not because they
- 1:13don't actually exist, but because we're trained not to see them?
- 1:17Think about that. What if the world isn't lacking evidence?
- 1:20What if there's enough evidence out there, but we're failing to see it because
- 1:25we are filtering out that evidence?
- 1:27So the idea of the filter isn't everything, like I said. Okay,
- 1:31it's a concept in psychology called reality tunnel or the reality tunnel.
- 1:35And it suggests that every single one of us sees the world through a filter.
- 1:40A filter that's built by our beliefs, our upbringing, and what we've been taught is real.
- 1:46Can come through religion, can come through school, can come through your friends,
- 1:50can come through your family.
- 1:51And from the moment we're very young, we're basically told this when it comes
- 1:55to ghosts in most circumstances.
- 1:58Ghosts aren't real, don't believe everything you see, and there's always a logical
- 2:03explanation. I love that one. There's always a logical explanation.
- 2:07Although with that one, a lot of times logical emits or I'm sorry,
- 2:12omits the fact that maybe logical is that they actually do exist.
- 2:16And over the years, something happens very slowly. Okay, we stop trusting in our own perceptions.
- 2:24We ignore that shadow in the corner that we kind of kind of see when we're not paying attention.
- 2:29We explain away those footsteps we hear upstairs. We dismiss that feeling that
- 2:33you're being watched, you know, someone standing over your shoulder.
- 2:37We dismiss it, not because we say, hey, we're not going to pay attention to
- 2:41it, but we dismiss it because of the filter.
- 2:44Okay, the filter logically, or I should say, in its own sense,
- 2:49filters the information and makes us ignore it.
- 2:52I'm going to tell you my own personal story. It was interesting,
- 2:55but when I was young, I grew up in a haunted house.
- 2:57If you're curious to read about that, you can go to my blog,
- 2:59hauntedandwaiting.blog.
- 3:01Read up on the, it's a free book that I'm posting there called My Bronx Haunting.
- 3:06And I write about some of the experiences I had there. But in this particular
- 3:09house in the city, it was only myself and my sister-in-law who believed the house was haunted.
- 3:15We saw things, we experienced things, okay? As well as some of the friends that
- 3:20we had, street kids that would come to the neighborhood.
- 3:23I'm sorry, come into the house from the neighborhood that would come to my house and see things.
- 3:26But other than that, majority of my family, I would say 80% of my family,
- 3:29did not believe the house was haunted.
- 3:32I had one friend, I'm gonna call him T, okay? He was at my house one day.
- 3:37We were, I want to say, about 10 years old.
- 3:40And it was just him and I sitting in our living room. And at that time, it's an old Bronx house.
- 3:45There were radiators in every room, okay, a pre-war house.
- 3:49And over the radiators, if any of you live in an old house, there was something
- 3:53called a radiator cover.
- 3:54Okay, so it's a wooden box that took over the radiator so that you wouldn't
- 3:58get burned if you happened to touch it.
- 4:01For whatever reason, and he was a believer, okay, he was one of my friends that
- 4:05believed, when he would come into my house, this radiator cover would shake.
- 4:09It would shake on its own, and it would go da-da-da-da-da. It would just shake.
- 4:14And he would look at it, and he'd get scared, and he'd run out.
- 4:16He ran out of our house many times because of this.
- 4:19Now, I had mentioned this to the adults in the house at the time, and they dismissed it.
- 4:24Well, we did live near a train. The train was a block away.
- 4:28Maybe the vibration from the train is doing it. Okay, fine. Then how come it
- 4:32only happens when T is in the house in no other time?
- 4:35So they couldn't explain it. So there were times when T was in my house,
- 4:41and my whole family was there and the radiator would do this and nobody seemed
- 4:47to notice it but T and myself.
- 4:49We instantly would notice it and of course you know I'm going to say once we
- 4:54brought it up to everybody's attention it would just stop as if whatever was
- 4:58making it shape was making it stop same way.
- 5:02But we heard it, nobody else heard it because they had filtered out that situation.
- 5:07They had filtered out that it was moving.
- 5:09Why did they filter it out? Because radiators don't move on their own.
- 5:13So it was filtered. So it's a perfect example of a filter, okay?
- 5:18And there's also this idea of, you know, taboo and social conditioning, right?
- 5:23So let's be honest, believing in
- 5:24ghosts, although it's a little bit more mainstream, is still very taboo.
- 5:28Even today, if you tell someone, hey, I saw this, I saw, I heard that,
- 5:35you're immediately met with, it's almost immediate, you were tired,
- 5:39it was your imagination.
- 5:41There's a rational explanation, and I love that one because they always try to figure that one out.
- 5:45And if they can't come up with a rational explanation, it always defaults to
- 5:48you were tired, it was your imagination.
- 5:51Or maybe even you're making it up. That's the one I can't stand.
- 5:54But here's the deeper question. How many experiences are dismissed before they're
- 6:00actually even explored, like my radiator cover?
- 6:02Okay, psychology shows us that our brains are wired with these biases.
- 6:06Okay, so we interpret the world in ways that confirm what we already believe.
- 6:12For instance, radiators don't move on their own.
- 6:15So if you believe in ghosts, if you believe that ghosts aren't real,
- 6:19your brain will literally work to disprove your own experience over and over
- 6:24and over again. When I was in Gettysburg.
- 6:28They had given us, there was this tour that we had done, and they'd given us
- 6:32this bag with all these ghost hunting equipments.
- 6:35And before we went around the house, it was called the murder house,
- 6:38actually, to explore the house.
- 6:40The people throwing the tour showed us videos.
- 6:44And these videos were over and over and over and over examples of times when
- 6:49a light would go off on its own or something would fall off a desk.
- 6:53And everybody in the room, I should say nobody in the room, picked up on it.
- 6:58Didn't even notice it because of that filter.
- 7:01So let's talk about the scientific method and the paranormal.
- 7:07And we've got to love the materialists, right? Got to love them.
- 7:10We're going to talk about science.
- 7:11Science relies on something incredibly powerful. It's called the scientific
- 7:14method. We all know it, right? When you went to school, seventh grade science, right?
- 7:18You observe something, you measure it. If you can repeat it with controlled
- 7:22conditions, then you can prove it. Here's the problem, okay?
- 7:26Ghosts don't follow rules. We know that. They don't show up on command.
- 7:30You can't just take a ghost and tell them, here, we're going to do an experiment
- 7:33on you. They don't repeat on cue.
- 7:36They don't perform in controlled environments.
- 7:39And because of that, science will automatically dismiss it.
- 7:42The other thing is, if you really think about it, when you do a scientific experiment,
- 7:46you include all the variables.
- 7:49You remove variables to make sure that it wasn't a cause and effect that a variable created.
- 7:54But what if there are variables that we just don't know of yet,
- 7:57that science hasn't uncovered yet?
- 8:00You know, such as ESP. We can't prove it. But what if that's a variable?
- 8:04Maybe a person has to have a certain level of sensitivity to these things to do an experiment.
- 8:09So it's flawed just in its very own way.
- 8:13Method, the scientific experiment, the scientific community didn't understand
- 8:18that, that those things cannot be proven, okay?
- 8:22So, and the fact that scientific consensus is that there's no reliable evidence
- 8:27that ghosts exist, and many experiences are explained through perceptual errors
- 8:32or environmental factors or the brain misinterpreting sensory input.
- 8:37So, for instance, The radiator is moving because of the train.
- 8:42They don't pay attention to the fact that it doesn't always do that.
- 8:45And it only did it when tea was in the room.
- 8:47So things like sleep paralysis, hallucinations, pareidolias,
- 8:52which is seeing faces, and things that maybe represent a spirit,
- 8:58are this unintentional blindness.
- 9:01Okay, going back to the radiator covers, how everybody else,
- 9:05nobody else seemed to notice the radiators but me and my friend.
- 9:09That's unintentional blindness. Also, when we were in Gettysburg,
- 9:13the fact that nobody saw a flashlight flickering in the corner of the room,
- 9:16again, unintentional blindness. Because it's not something that should be happening, so you don't see it.
- 9:22Your brain literally begins filling in gaps. So science says it's not a ghost,
- 9:27it's your brain. But what if that's only part of the story?
- 9:31So the materialists believe in this big filter, right? There's a philosophy
- 9:34behind modern science called materialism.
- 9:36Okay, basically says only physical things exist.
- 9:40If you can't measure it, if you can't detect it, or if it doesn't interact with
- 9:44physical matter, it doesn't exist.
- 9:46Guess what? Ghosts do not fit that model either. Okay, so they're dismissed.
- 9:52Not necessarily because they've been disproven, but because they don't fit that framework.
- 9:57Some versions of this thinking, like eliminative materialism,
- 10:01go even further, suggesting that things we experience might not even exist if
- 10:05they can't be explained biologically.
- 10:07In other words, if science can't explain it, it gets filtered out. Okay?
- 10:11So it's not like you're trying to ignore it. Your brain automatically ignores it.
- 10:16But what if the filter works both ways? Here's where it gets interesting.
- 10:20Simon says we misinterpret reality.
- 10:22But what if sometimes reality is being misinterpreted by science itself?
- 10:27Even some physicists have questioned whether materialism can fully explain consciousness
- 10:31or reality at all. So now we're left with something unsettling.
- 10:35Two filters, right? One that filters out proof of ghosts and one that filters
- 10:40in logical explanations.
- 10:42And somewhere in between, I feel, is the truth, right?
- 10:45So you do have those people that everything is a haunting
- 10:48okay so it works both ways so let's
- 10:53talk about real cases because that's what i love um where the filter
- 10:56may have applied okay so there's some there's a situation that happened in england
- 11:00in 1977 i will have it in my blog and a link you can read up on it yourself
- 11:04but it's called the enfield poltergeist and there was a family that reported
- 11:07seeing objects moving voices physical disturbances and the classic definition
- 11:14of a haunted house so to speak,
- 11:16Some say it was paranormal, and others say that it was just a hoax or like a
- 11:20psychological trick on the brain. But here's the key.
- 11:23Some events were witnessed by multiple people, yet still dismissed.
- 11:28Okay, so multiple people are having these experiences, but it was still dismissed.
- 11:32The scientists dismissed it. You can read more about that on my blog, okay?
- 11:36And again, it's similar to the Amityville-Hara situation in 1975, okay?
- 11:40One of the most famous hauntings here in the United States, okay,
- 11:44with the Lutz thing, okay, where they heard voices, they heard apparitions,
- 11:47violent paranormal activity.
- 11:50Skeptics, again, called it a hoax, again, but some supporters were arguing that
- 11:55parts were exaggerated or the entire case filtered out because it didn't fit
- 11:58the scientific explanation.
- 11:59But again, more than one person experienced the same thing at the same time.
- 12:04So unless it was a mass hoax, it's another perfect example.
- 12:09Sleep paralysis. Anybody out there have that? Thank goodness I do not have sleep
- 12:13paralysis, but thousands of people across cultures do have sleep paralysis. My son is one of them.
- 12:18Where they report seeing dark figures or pressure on the chest or presence in the room.
- 12:23Science says sleep paralysis and hallucinations can cause that,
- 12:28right? But here's the twist.
- 12:29Why do so many people describe the exact same shadowy figure across cultures, across countries?
- 12:38You know is it the brain really are the brains communicating
- 12:41with each other across the sea or are we filtering the same experience through
- 12:45different explanations so i'm going to add a link there as well about sleep
- 12:50paralysis so if you experience sleep paralysis and you want a little bit more
- 12:53than the scientific explanation please go there and read out okay um so in closing.
- 13:01The next time your dog stares into the dark okay or your cat loops for no reason
- 13:06or you hear something you can't explain or maybe see something through the corner
- 13:10of your eye, ask yourself,
- 13:12did nothing happen or did you just filter?
- 13:17Did you just decide not to pay attention to it, not to research the house you
- 13:21live in, not to look into a situation?
- 13:25Okay, so maybe ghosts don't need proof.
- 13:29Maybe, you know, there was a time when we didn't realize gravity was a thing,
- 13:34right, until we could prove it. Could be the same thing.
- 13:37So anyway, again, thanks for listening. And if you have a chance,
- 13:41please hop on over to the Eye Opener Society.
- 13:44Some of the other podcasts are amazing.
- 13:46Alternative realities, we talk about things a lot of people don't like to talk
- 13:50about, a lot of raw stuff.
- 13:52And of course, you can also find me on my blog, on didn'tweeding.blog,
- 13:57as well as on Facebook, same name, as well as on TikTok, same name.
- 14:01Wish you all well. and until next time, this is Anne Lund.
