- 0:01Dave Hamilton: Business Brain, episode 780 for Wednesday, August 19th, National Aviation Day, 2026.
- 0:10Dave Hamilton: And, hey, there's the song. I knew it would play.
- 0:12Shannon Jean: Oh, there's some music. Oh, can't do that.
- 0:16Dave Hamilton: Aviation has always been an interest of mine. It's not fair to call it a hobby
- 0:20Dave Hamilton: because I don't actively participate in it anymore. But, you know,
- 0:24Dave Hamilton: it's... It's interesting.
- 0:26Shannon Jean: I love aviation. I'm not a huge fan of flying. I'm a huge fan of getting...
- 0:30Shannon Jean: I'd like to get there, but I'm not a huge fan of getting in,
- 0:35Shannon Jean: sitting there and waiting.
- 0:36Dave Hamilton: Oh, yeah. Well, I don't like that. Sitting on a plane is no fun.
- 0:40Dave Hamilton: Unless, as my friend Pilot Pete, who's a co-host of Mac Geek,
- 0:44Dave Hamilton: says, he's like, I don't care what seat.
- 0:46Dave Hamilton: You know, anytime we fly together, like we go to CES or whatever,
- 0:49Dave Hamilton: I'm like, do you care? He's like, well, I prefer an aisle. But other than that,
- 0:52Dave Hamilton: he's like, I really don't care. He's like, the only seat that I prefer is the
- 0:55Dave Hamilton: seat up front with the big window in front of it.
- 0:59Dave Hamilton: Ah, yes. Because he used to fly triple sevens for a living and flew in the Marines.
- 1:04Dave Hamilton: He flew Harriers in the Marines, which is like a crazy thing.
- 1:07Shannon Jean: Yeah. That's nuts. Yeah.
- 1:08Dave Hamilton: But, but yeah, I love, I love, I love flying, like flying a plane.
- 1:13Dave Hamilton: Have you ever flown a plane?
- 1:14Shannon Jean: No, I've never, never done.
- 1:16Dave Hamilton: Oh, I recommend it. I mean, if you have an interest in it, sign up for what
- 1:21Dave Hamilton: they would call a discovery flight. Right.
- 1:25Dave Hamilton: And, and, and they'll take you up and, and it's essentially a flight lesson,
- 1:29Dave Hamilton: but they put you in the left seat in the pilot seat you know they take off and
- 1:33Dave Hamilton: land because you don't know how to do that yet,
- 1:36Dave Hamilton: but they'll give you the controls once they get up and let you kind of play
- 1:40Dave Hamilton: with it and learn and it's fun sounds,
- 1:46Dave Hamilton: pretty interesting I was up with my brother once and the guy knew that it was
- 1:50Dave Hamilton: not his first discovery flight so we had some fun and at one point we were up
- 1:55Dave Hamilton: at maybe 5,000 feet or something and he just leans over and kills the engine,
- 1:59Dave Hamilton: uh their instructor does and and this guy was seasoned you know and and he's like,
- 2:05Dave Hamilton: well that what do you think about
- 2:06Dave Hamilton: that and my brother was like well he's like uh i don't know he's like,
- 2:11Dave Hamilton: we're still flying he's like we're probably losing altitude a little bit and
- 2:14Dave Hamilton: he's like exactly he's like you don't panic when you lose your engine he's like
- 2:18Dave Hamilton: yeah first thing you do is try to restart it you want to do that he's like yeah please.
- 2:22Shannon Jean: That totally makes sense
- 2:23Dave Hamilton: Yeah yeah it's interesting yeah but it is it all kind of plays into a topic
- 2:28Dave Hamilton: you had on deck for us hobbies yeah.
- 2:31Shannon Jean: So i'll tell you i i uh somehow i turned 61 years old yesterday
- 2:35Dave Hamilton: That's right happy birthday oh yeah thanks.
- 2:38Shannon Jean: Yeah somehow it snuck up on me over the last 30 years i still feel like i'm
- 2:42Shannon Jean: 30 but uh one of the things i was thinking about it and um i posted about it
- 2:47Shannon Jean: on x and i was looking And I was thinking, man,
- 2:51Shannon Jean: I just feel like so fortunate to have lived this, continue to live this great
- 2:55Shannon Jean: life and really different.
- 2:57Shannon Jean: And one of the things that has the decisions that I made
- 3:01Shannon Jean: that allowed me to live this uncommon life is to protect my hobbies and to keep my hobbies.
- 3:09Shannon Jean: Because, and I, looking back, I notice it. At the time, I didn't really, you know, like- No,
- 3:16Dave Hamilton: But you did it. You prioritized your hobbies. Yes. Yes, yes.
- 3:20Shannon Jean: And there's, you know, we all go through, especially for, I think this is especially
- 3:24Shannon Jean: important for entrepreneurs because
- 3:27Shannon Jean: you don't want to wake up one day like I did yesterday and be 61 years old and
- 3:32Shannon Jean: not have any hobbies because you have focused solely on your business or even your family.
- 3:39Shannon Jean: And there are times in your life where you totally have to focus on those things 100%, right? Yes.
- 3:45Shannon Jean: You're required to. Your kids are there. You're into everything they're doing.
- 3:49Shannon Jean: Your business is like pushing you in all different directions.
- 3:52Shannon Jean: So of course you have to focus on those things. So you're not gonna be able
- 3:55Shannon Jean: to give yourself the time to do the, maybe every single thing you wanted to do, right?
- 4:01Shannon Jean: But you can't abandon those hobbies. You can put them aside for a little bit.
- 4:05Shannon Jean: And the reason I say that is like the happiest people I know that are my age, they all have hobbies.
- 4:13Dave Hamilton: Yep.
- 4:15Shannon Jean: Whether it be like you, playing in a band, being involved in music,
- 4:18Shannon Jean: being involved in theater, you know, all the other things, whether it's me,
- 4:21Shannon Jean: I like to fish, I like to hunt.
- 4:23Shannon Jean: Exactly. We're coming up in, during, you know, three or four months during the
- 4:27Shannon Jean: winter time. I hunt two or three times a week and I love it.
- 4:30Shannon Jean: And it gets me out. And it does thing. And I remember specifically when my kids were little,
- 4:37Shannon Jean: I still remember this conversation with my wife. I was like,
- 4:38Shannon Jean: man, I'm never gonna be able to hunt again. And she was like, this is just a phase.
- 4:44Shannon Jean: We're focused on these kids. We have to give them all of our attention.
- 4:50Shannon Jean: Yes, you're not gonna be able to do this as much right now, but later you will
- 4:54Shannon Jean: be able to. And that did, she's a very wise woman, that totally panned out. Yeah.
- 5:00Shannon Jean: So as entrepreneurs, I think it's,
- 5:03Shannon Jean: you know it's just i'm hyper focused on things i'm working on and it's easy
- 5:09Shannon Jean: to let things fall by the wayside and think that your hobby is your business
- 5:13Shannon Jean: or you you get lots of well you
- 5:15Dave Hamilton: Can i mean you can take your hobbies and turn them into your businesses too
- 5:19Dave Hamilton: and you did that as well i i want to make sure that we,
- 5:23Dave Hamilton: because i've done the same thing yeah music is one of my hobbies and yes i've
- 5:27Dave Hamilton: turned that into a business as well i mean a i make money playing music uh right b,
- 5:33Dave Hamilton: i have a podcast for musicians right you know we have a company called backbeat
- 5:38Dave Hamilton: media that my my partner named but it was like well you know our ceo is a drummer
- 5:43Dave Hamilton: or whatever and uh but the other business that,
- 5:46Dave Hamilton: i have is on the mac side right i have mac geek we started mac observer i've
- 5:51Dave Hamilton: always been an apple fan and we started businesses with that you did the same
- 5:54Dave Hamilton: thing with mac rescue like it it Let your hobbies feed your business interest because,
- 6:02Dave Hamilton: you need to enjoy some aspect of it.
- 6:05Dave Hamilton: You won't enjoy every aspect of your business life. That's just like there's
- 6:10Dave Hamilton: going to be parts about it that suck.
- 6:12Dave Hamilton: We talk about that here. In fact, it's most of what we talk about here,
- 6:15Dave Hamilton: you know, because you got to process it and deal with it.
- 6:18Dave Hamilton: But like pick something you enjoy. And if it's your hobby, that's OK.
- 6:23Dave Hamilton: Like there is I am living proof that you can turn your hobbies into businesses
- 6:28Dave Hamilton: and not hate your hobbies.
- 6:31Shannon Jean: Yeah, I would say it's like this is two different sides of the same coin, right? It is.
- 6:36Shannon Jean: Yes, you can turn your hobbies and monetize them and become businesses.
- 6:41Shannon Jean: But in my case, I think in the Apple space or the Mac or all this kind of thing,
- 6:49Shannon Jean: how I got into those businesses that we started,
- 6:54Shannon Jean: I didn't look at them as hobbies anymore.
- 6:57Shannon Jean: And i i i often say if you want to ruin something you love monetize it you know
- 7:03Shannon Jean: because it thought that ruined it but i looked at it in a very different
- 7:08Shannon Jean: uh way yeah over the years right yes yeah and so on the flip side of that coin is the
- 7:16Shannon Jean: once you kind of get to the other side of the daily grind and you have all the
- 7:20Shannon Jean: flexibility and freedom to make your own decisions Well,
- 7:25Shannon Jean: I see people wreck it.
- 7:26Shannon Jean: It's easy to wreck it because you can either get complacent or you don't have
- 7:34Shannon Jean: passion for something else that maybe like, you sold your business or whatever,
- 7:38Shannon Jean: semi-retired or retired.
- 7:40Shannon Jean: So the hobbies, the things that you love,
- 7:43Shannon Jean: they can fill in a lot of that life
- 7:46Shannon Jean: that kind of changes over time because everything changes and you know,
- 7:49Dave Hamilton: No, no, of course I have a question for you though. Um, because you're no longer
- 7:54Dave Hamilton: in the, you don't, you, you sold Mac rescue, you sold tech restore.
- 7:58Dave Hamilton: You're not in that world anymore.
- 8:01Dave Hamilton: Um, do you still pay some amount of attention to Apple? That is more than you would write.
- 8:07Dave Hamilton: So your hobby survived.
- 8:11Dave Hamilton: You having had a business about it. and dispatching with that business.
- 8:15Shannon Jean: Yeah i still follow everything i'm not as i don't wait in line to get you know
- 8:19Shannon Jean: whatever sort of thing but but i'm always reading oh what's going on and what's
- 8:23Shannon Jean: the next thing and yeah yeah for
- 8:25Dave Hamilton: Sure it didn't kill it for you it may have suppressed it for a little while
- 8:29Dave Hamilton: and i yeah i noticed that too um,
- 8:32Dave Hamilton: you know certainly when we were running mac observer initially it was like this
- 8:35Dave Hamilton: is amazing like you get to do this thing and pay attention and after a i was like
- 8:38Dave Hamilton: i am sick and tired of paying this amount of attention to things and and that's
- 8:42Dave Hamilton: really when i changed what i was doing there and and started mac geeka because,
- 8:49Dave Hamilton: i like answering people's questions i still 21 years later now i mean this,
- 8:54Dave Hamilton: might me wanting to help people solve their tech problems predated mac geeka by
- 9:00Dave Hamilton: you know 15 years 20 years i my first career like when i said as a kid like
- 9:05Dave Hamilton: if somebody asked me what do you want to be when you grow up my answer was i
- 9:08Dave Hamilton: want to be a computer consultant now that was a not
- 9:11Dave Hamilton: really a job back then but you know it's going to be and it is now
- 9:16Dave Hamilton: and uh and that's essentially you know what we are on on mac key cab is i mean
- 9:22Dave Hamilton: it's it's implemented in a different way we're not going to people's homes or
- 9:24Dave Hamilton: anything but you know we're helping people solve their problems,
- 9:27Dave Hamilton: and uh and and so like,
- 9:30Dave Hamilton: taking the business and letting it morphing it to match your interests as you
- 9:35Dave Hamilton: move on at I think it's a good thing maybe,
- 9:39Dave Hamilton: it's kept me in it for long well it's kept me with the business longer than
- 9:43Dave Hamilton: I probably if I didn't have Mac geek up I would have sold Mac observer probably 10 years prior,
- 9:48Dave Hamilton: Mm, yeah. Right? So, and maybe that would have been better, maybe worse.
- 9:52Dave Hamilton: I don't know. It doesn't matter. Yeah.
- 9:54Shannon Jean: Well, there were times in my life where I could not even comprehend what it
- 9:59Shannon Jean: would be like not having this business.
- 10:01Dave Hamilton: Oh, same. Oh, yeah.
- 10:03Shannon Jean: Like, it was not a part of my reality. And then when you sell one, you realize, oh, yeah.
- 10:10Shannon Jean: Oh, okay. I can. It's okay. And then it's okay. And that's what we did the episode
- 10:14Shannon Jean: last week about starting your second business. You should go back and listen
- 10:17Shannon Jean: to that because it gives you a whole nother like superpower when you go do it again.
- 10:22Dave Hamilton: Oh yeah. Oh, for sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's cool. Yeah. It's good stuff.
- 10:26Dave Hamilton: Uh, I have, I have a lesson, a business lesson that I learned from one of my
- 10:34Dave Hamilton: hobbies, uh, that we will share in, uh, in a little bit.
- 10:38Dave Hamilton: The next thing that, we want to do is we want to tell you about our sponsors for this week.
- 10:44Dave Hamilton: We entrepreneurs have a specific problem at bedtime, right? The business doesn't clock out when we do.
- 10:51Dave Hamilton: So recently, and actually just last night, I tested out Somnipods 3 from our sponsor Fitnexa.
- 10:59Dave Hamilton: These are sleep earbuds, right? And the thing that matters most is that they're
- 11:03Dave Hamilton: flat enough so that I can lie directly on them. I'm a side sleeper,
- 11:08Dave Hamilton: and for me, these stay comfortable with my head on the pillow.
- 11:12Dave Hamilton: I know that that's table stakes for a sleep earbud, and it's important for me
- 11:16Dave Hamilton: to mention that they hit this, but the real prize is that the companion app
- 11:21Dave Hamilton: that comes along with it, the Fitnexa app, is awesome.
- 11:24Dave Hamilton: Genuinely good content, like lots of different options of different things.
- 11:28Dave Hamilton: They've even got some binaural stuff in there if you want to do that,
- 11:30Dave Hamilton: but you You know, nature sounds or different white noise, pink noise,
- 11:34Dave Hamilton: you know, all the different things right there.
- 11:37Dave Hamilton: And it's easy to get the sounds you want without fighting a menu at midnight.
- 11:41Dave Hamilton: They also filter out enough of the surrounding noise that I can actually wind down.
- 11:47Dave Hamilton: And here's the bonus I didn't expect. I'm a music nerd, as you know.
- 11:51Dave Hamilton: So I ran my usual earbud test playlist through these purely out of curiosity.
- 11:56Dave Hamilton: These are not like intended to be just music listening headphones,
- 11:59Dave Hamilton: but they sound great. And that's the charmed life, right?
- 12:02Dave Hamilton: Protecting the eight hours that make the other 16 work.
- 12:07Dave Hamilton: I can see myself using these on especially distracting days and also obviously while I travel.
- 12:13Dave Hamilton: And you can too. Fitnexa is giving you, our listeners, $10 off of Somnipods 3.
- 12:19Dave Hamilton: Head to go.fitnexa.com slash brain, and the discount applies automatically.
- 12:25Dave Hamilton: You can also use code brain for $10 off. Go check it out. Go.fitnexa.com slash
- 12:31Dave Hamilton: brain, and code brain for $10 off either way.
- 12:35Dave Hamilton: And our thanks to Fitnexa and Somnipods 3 for sponsoring this episode.
- 12:40Dave Hamilton: And hey, quick question. Do you actually know how many of your passwords are
- 12:44Dave Hamilton: reused across your accounts right now?
- 12:47Dave Hamilton: I mean, we all know that in the early days, we would use the same password everywhere.
- 12:52Dave Hamilton: How many of those have you changed? Have you changed all of them? Right? I didn't.
- 12:57Dave Hamilton: And what won me over with our sponsor, Keeper, was the migration.
- 13:01Dave Hamilton: Importing everything out of my old password manager was shockingly painless,
- 13:06Dave Hamilton: which is not a sentence I expected to say.
- 13:09Dave Hamilton: And then their reused password detection just handed me a list.
- 13:14Dave Hamilton: Every duplicate right there.
- 13:16Dave Hamilton: Embarrassingly so in some ways, but easy to go fix.
- 13:20Dave Hamilton: One of mine had been in continuous service so long it should be collecting a
- 13:24Dave Hamilton: pension. I'm glad somebody else isn't collecting a pension off of me because I didn't change it.
- 13:29Dave Hamilton: Keeper is a password manager that creates strong, unique passwords for all your
- 13:33Dave Hamilton: accounts, stores them securely in one place, and logs you in automatically across
- 13:38Dave Hamilton: all your devices, so you never have to remember, guess, or worry about getting
- 13:43Dave Hamilton: locked out of your accounts again.
- 13:44Dave Hamilton: Right now, Keeper's offering 60% off personal and family plans at KeeperSecurity.com slash brain.
- 13:51Dave Hamilton: This incredible offer is only available for you podcast listeners.
- 13:55Dave Hamilton: That's KeeperSecurity.com slash brain for 60% off personal and family plans.
- 14:01Dave Hamilton: And if you're running a team at work, check out Keeper's business plans.
- 14:05Dave Hamilton: Just make sure to use our link so they know that we sent you,
- 14:08Dave Hamilton: KeeperSecurity.com slash brain. And our thanks to Keeper for sponsoring this episode.
- 14:15Shannon Jean: Can I make one comment about these Fitnexa?
- 14:17Dave Hamilton: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 14:18Shannon Jean: Dude, the packaging, it was the first packaging I've gotten that reminded me of an Apple experience.
- 14:24Dave Hamilton: Yeah, it tells a story when you open it up.
- 14:26Shannon Jean: Oh, it was amazing. And to your comment about the sound where you play music, incredible, dude.
- 14:33Dave Hamilton: Yeah. I love it. Yeah, it's pretty good. All right, so speaking of music,
- 14:38Dave Hamilton: I was on stage on Saturday night. We played this Led Zeppelin heart tribute
- 14:45Dave Hamilton: thing. We called it Hold Lotta Heart.
- 14:46Dave Hamilton: And we played it at the biggest theater in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, called the Music Hall.
- 14:53Dave Hamilton: The theater holds about 800 people. I'd say we sold about 600 tickets.
- 14:57Dave Hamilton: So there were a lot of people there. It was great. And we've done this thing
- 15:02Dave Hamilton: before. We did it about 18 months ago at a different theater.
- 15:06Dave Hamilton: But for this one i realized coming into it that the stakes were higher um,
- 15:13Dave Hamilton: when we played at this other theater in my head now this may not have been true
- 15:17Dave Hamilton: but it doesn't matter because it was in my head played at this other theater it felt a little safer,
- 15:21Dave Hamilton: because everybody in my mind that came to that theater the the smaller place uh.
- 15:30Dave Hamilton: Knew that this was a one-off concert for us that we weren't a you know a going
- 15:36Dave Hamilton: concern as a led zeppelin slash heart tribute that plays all the time and rehearses
- 15:41Dave Hamilton: all the time and is perfected and all these things right uh,
- 15:45Dave Hamilton: but i knew that moving not too far down the street to the music hall,
- 15:48Dave Hamilton: changes those stakes because that place has touring bands through there all
- 15:53Dave Hamilton: the time You know, and and you would it would be very normal for them to bring
- 15:59Dave Hamilton: in a touring, you know, Led Zeppelin tribute production.
- 16:02Dave Hamilton: I saw Natalie Merchant there not that long ago. I mean, they bring in people.
- 16:06Dave Hamilton: That's what that's their business. Right. I saw Ben Folds there like,
- 16:10Dave Hamilton: you know, they bring in artists like that. Right.
- 16:12Dave Hamilton: And so I'm thinking, man, there are going to be people here that know the Led
- 16:20Dave Hamilton: Zeppelin drum parts better than me.
- 16:23Dave Hamilton: Like this is this is just this is objectively true.
- 16:26Dave Hamilton: And there's nothing that I can do in the next 15 minutes before I walk on stage
- 16:31Dave Hamilton: to change this fact like they are already in their seats and I'm about to go sit in mine. Right.
- 16:36Dave Hamilton: And and and the way I talked to myself through that was, well.
- 16:42Dave Hamilton: We're we're as rehearsed as we're going to be i feel okay about this and the
- 16:47Dave Hamilton: difference between me and that guy out there is that,
- 16:50Dave Hamilton: uh i'm sitting on stage and he's sitting in the audience and i've earned my
- 16:55Dave Hamilton: spot on stage we deserve this we we created this opportunity right right yeah
- 17:00Dave Hamilton: we did this even if he's a better drummer than me it doesn't matter you know like we,
- 17:05Dave Hamilton: we're the ones here and and we're going to deliver and for everybody and so
- 17:09Dave Hamilton: you know screw that guy but for everybody else, please enjoy,
- 17:12Dave Hamilton: you know, it's fine.
- 17:14Dave Hamilton: Like that. You kind of have to do some of that, right? Plus this is Led Zeppelin
- 17:17Dave Hamilton: music and it requires you to be aggressive.
- 17:22Dave Hamilton: And what I found was, you know, once we were on stage with shows going, I'm,
- 17:27Dave Hamilton: Any moment where I felt myself being like a little timid about like,
- 17:32Dave Hamilton: should I like I could just play it safe?
- 17:36Dave Hamilton: I realized that is not giving the show these people deserve.
- 17:41Dave Hamilton: Like Led Zeppelin never played it safe on stage. Yeah, it did exactly the opposite.
- 17:45Dave Hamilton: For sure. Right. They they went they they did what they wanted to do.
- 17:49Dave Hamilton: And if it didn't land, that was OK.
- 17:51Dave Hamilton: Right. you know and and so anytime and i realized this early early on in the gig thank goodness um,
- 17:59Dave Hamilton: and it worked out really well people had a great time at the show we had a great
- 18:02Dave Hamilton: time at the show it was it was it was by every measure of phenomenal success,
- 18:07Dave Hamilton: and uh anytime i felt myself get timid,
- 18:11Dave Hamilton: i would just play some big huge bombastic fill in the spirit of john bonham,
- 18:16Dave Hamilton: and it was like i can like talk about being timid later but for right now
- 18:20Dave Hamilton: i cannot be timid and if i ever notice myself being timid i'm just gonna play
- 18:24Dave Hamilton: through it like i'm gonna overplay through it and okay and that worked like
- 18:29Dave Hamilton: it worked for the crowd loved it because that's what they came to see.
- 18:34Dave Hamilton: You know and i loved it because it was like nope i'm not gonna like i can be
- 18:39Dave Hamilton: timid as long as i want but at some point,
- 18:43Dave Hamilton: i'm either gonna like fall off the drum stool or i'm gonna i'm gonna deliver
- 18:46Dave Hamilton: like it's one or the other you know and i'm not gonna let myself like you know
- 18:50Dave Hamilton: crawl into a hole and fall off the drum stool so it's gonna be this way and,
- 18:56Dave Hamilton: And it would serve me very well throughout the gig. And it will probably serve
- 18:59Dave Hamilton: me well through future gigs with with any other project. You always kind of learn things.
- 19:04Dave Hamilton: And as I was thinking about this, it was like, you know, this is true in in
- 19:09Dave Hamilton: in life in general, but for our purposes specifically in business.
- 19:14Dave Hamilton: There's no benefit to being timid about making decisions.
- 19:18Dave Hamilton: There's no benefit in being timid about taking chances with your business.
- 19:23Dave Hamilton: There's informed risk and which is what i was doing i know how to play the drums
- 19:29Dave Hamilton: right like you know i have the functional knowledge of how to do this i can choose not to,
- 19:35Dave Hamilton: or i can choose to and if it might not work out exactly well i might drop a
- 19:39Dave Hamilton: stick could happen it's happened before definitely going to happen again,
- 19:43Dave Hamilton: Maybe this is the moment. I don't know, but I won't know unless I try this, you know?
- 19:48Dave Hamilton: And, and that was, that was kind of the, the, the meta lesson that I walked
- 19:52Dave Hamilton: away from that gig with was like, no, it's like, anytime you're feeling timid,
- 19:56Dave Hamilton: don't just play the field.
- 19:57Shannon Jean: Your customers don't want you to be timid.
- 19:59Dave Hamilton: They definitely don't want you to be, they will go to somebody else.
- 20:02Dave Hamilton: They want you to solve their problems. Yeah. Yes.
- 20:03Shannon Jean: If you're, they want their problem solved and they want somebody who's confident
- 20:08Shannon Jean: in solving their problems. That's it. You know, that, that's huge.
- 20:13Dave Hamilton: Communicate confidence. Yes.
- 20:15Shannon Jean: Yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 20:17Dave Hamilton: And that's huge. And it's communicating confidence in two directions,
- 20:20Dave Hamilton: right? You know, it's that whole fake it till you make it kind of thing, right?
- 20:22Dave Hamilton: You're communicating confidence to your customers and also to yourself.
- 20:26Dave Hamilton: Like you're both getting the same lesson out of this, you know?
- 20:30Shannon Jean: Absolutely.
- 20:31Dave Hamilton: And you will fail. One of the best things that happened on that gig was we as
- 20:37Dave Hamilton: a band. I mean, the first, I'll call it big error. I'm sure we were all making
- 20:42Dave Hamilton: little errors because that's just how it goes. The first big error was our singer.
- 20:46Dave Hamilton: He sang through a guitar solo that he should not have sung through.
- 20:49Dave Hamilton: But what it did was it made the band all like get out of our heads of like just
- 20:54Dave Hamilton: playing through the music like we know it to go. It was like,
- 20:56Dave Hamilton: oh, nope. Now we all need to pay attention to each other.
- 20:59Dave Hamilton: And that was great. It served us well for the rest of the night.
- 21:01Dave Hamilton: But it was one of those things where it was like, you know what?
- 21:04Dave Hamilton: We can make mistakes. We're all going to. He made the first one. Yeah.
- 21:08Dave Hamilton: He didn't make the last one. Let me tell you that. You know,
- 21:10Dave Hamilton: we all owned our parts in this and it was fine. Like, you know,
- 21:15Dave Hamilton: you just make it through. You just keep going.
- 21:18Shannon Jean: Yeah. I love it. Yeah. Yeah. That's huge. I agree. Is that.
- 21:22Shannon Jean: Being timid and overthinking it, you know, it's, you're just better off. You just got to go for it.
- 21:29Dave Hamilton: Just go for it.
- 21:29Shannon Jean: And, you know, that's what your, that's what your clients want.
- 21:32Shannon Jean: They want you to clear the path, solve the problem, provide the solution,
- 21:38Shannon Jean: whatever it is, and not be timid.
- 21:40Dave Hamilton: There was, there was a, there was a, yeah, the, and this lesson,
- 21:44Dave Hamilton: I'm not, certainly not the first person to, to share this lesson.
- 21:46Dave Hamilton: It's not the first time I've heard this lesson, but sometimes you implement
- 21:50Dave Hamilton: it in a way that resonates and it's like, oh, now I understand this.
- 21:54Dave Hamilton: You know, I'm reminded of the there's a scene in it's a wonderfully stupid movie.
- 22:00Dave Hamilton: We're the Millers with Jason Sudeikis.
- 22:03Dave Hamilton: And he's like trying to teach this younger kid guy, you know,
- 22:09Dave Hamilton: how to like approach girls, you know, and he's like, anytime I'm nervous.
- 22:14Dave Hamilton: Like it what i do is i just count to three real fast and then i just go do it
- 22:19Dave Hamilton: because i can overthink it and i can stay in my head forever
- 22:21Dave Hamilton: but instead he was i think he was talking about like kissing a girl or something
- 22:25Dave Hamilton: and he's like yeah what i do instead is i just go one two three and then i kiss
- 22:28Dave Hamilton: him like that's it like it's gonna happen and it's the same thing it's just
- 22:32Dave Hamilton: you know it's just just doing and plow.
- 22:35Shannon Jean: Fold 80 of the time maybe more it's gonna turn out
- 22:37Dave Hamilton: In your favor just fine yeah you you know what you're like you already have
- 22:41Dave Hamilton: all the information stop thinking about it just just yeah.
- 22:45Shannon Jean: Yeah yeah the biggest competitors inside your head
- 22:47Dave Hamilton: Every single time yeah man yeah that's it.
- 22:50Shannon Jean: Yeah awesome good lesson
- 22:53Dave Hamilton: Yeah no it was a good lesson on stage it was um like i yeah served me well on
- 22:58Dave Hamilton: saturday and it has served me well since.
- 23:00Shannon Jean: Yeah yeah that's good what's the big takeaway for this episode
- 23:03Dave Hamilton: Um man i i mean it's it's you know if We distill it down. It's the importance,
- 23:09Dave Hamilton: of protect your hobbies. I liked that efficient way of saying it.
- 23:15Dave Hamilton: And also just do it.
- 23:19Dave Hamilton: Yeah. Play the field day.
- 23:20Shannon Jean: Don't be timid.
- 23:21Dave Hamilton: Don't be timid. Yeah. Yeah.
- 23:23Shannon Jean: I like it.
- 23:24Dave Hamilton: I don't know which one's more important. I like my life is impacted by both
- 23:29Dave Hamilton: of those in positive ways.
- 23:31Shannon Jean: I'm going to choose hobbies just because I brought it up.
- 23:35Shannon Jean: But I don't know. They are both super important. I think probably for your business.
- 23:39Dave Hamilton: I think for your business, it's the second one. Don't be timid.
- 23:42Shannon Jean: Yeah. Don't be timid. Yeah. I think don't be timid is a big takeaway.
- 23:46Shannon Jean: And we're going to dig into that more in our business blueprints that we do
