- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Are you NBC analyst? Peacock analyst used to
- 0:11Speaker 1: play a little ball? Joey Vado, Joey, thanks so much
- 0:15Speaker 1: for joining us. Appreciate it.
- 0:18Speaker 2: How was you?
- 0:19Speaker 1: You got nervous for your first big debut here on
- 0:23Speaker 1: Peacock and NBC.
- 0:25Speaker 3: I'd never heard my title.
- 0:29Speaker 4: It's odd that it's odd that you're the first one,
- 0:34Speaker 4: and that it's such a complicated titles.
- 0:38Speaker 3: I wish it was something.
- 0:39Speaker 4: A bit more simple, like major League first baseman or
- 0:42Speaker 4: just first baseman.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, but such as the.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Employee number nineteen. Think that's a good one. That's a
- 0:51Speaker 4: good one. Am I nervous? I would say I think
- 0:56Speaker 4: that the thing I really liked to do going into
- 1:01Speaker 4: a baseball game is be be as prepared as possible
- 1:04Speaker 4: and in such a way that would simplify the game.
- 1:09Speaker 4: And I'm finding with this because I've never done this
- 1:11Speaker 4: before and because my strengths I think are specific. But
- 1:16Speaker 4: the game is vast, the demands of the game are vast.
- 1:19Speaker 3: You know, I don't know this.
- 1:22Speaker 4: I don't know the history of the Philadelphia Phillies and
- 1:26Speaker 4: the New York Yankees.
- 1:27Speaker 3: I don't know about you know, the.
- 1:30Speaker 4: Six game, when such and such faced off and all
- 1:34Speaker 4: of these things that you bring into context when explaining
- 1:37Speaker 4: a situation.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I lack that. So I have a full.
- 1:44Speaker 4: I have a like as much experience as you possibly
- 1:49Speaker 4: can have in the game on the field and thinking
- 1:53Speaker 4: about investing my entire life thinking about the game in
- 1:59Speaker 4: ways that I can better, But I don't.
- 2:01Speaker 3: I don't have a I don't have any.
- 2:03Speaker 4: Experience whatsoever in terms of being able to give the fans,
- 2:08Speaker 4: the people tuning in what they need. And I'm a
- 2:12Speaker 4: little bit nervous going into the game in that way.
- 2:16Speaker 4: I'm going to try to prepare as well as I
- 2:17Speaker 4: possibly can and to better know both teams, but I
- 2:23Speaker 4: don't know if that'll I don't know if that'll carry over.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I think I'll learn with repetitions.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Were you nervous before you played?
- 2:34Speaker 3: Not?
- 2:35Speaker 4: In not only The only time I ever found that
- 2:40Speaker 4: I was nervous was when I was when I was
- 2:43Speaker 4: ill prepared, and I was almost never ill prepared, you know,
- 2:46Speaker 4: They're the only time that I wouldn't be prepared would
- 2:50Speaker 4: be like a situation where, for example, you know, they
- 2:53Speaker 4: call up somebody and I didn't have video on that picture,
- 2:57Speaker 4: and all of a sudden I'm looking at the report,
- 2:59Speaker 4: but I wasn't able to the you know, scouting video
- 3:02Speaker 4: to have a really good idea of where I fit in.
- 3:05Speaker 4: And there would be occasions like that, and at bats
- 3:08Speaker 4: goes so quickly that when when you're facing a new picture,
- 3:14Speaker 4: you know, I was the mindset, I will give no outs,
- 3:17Speaker 4: you know, even my even I will give no a
- 3:20Speaker 4: bats away, new play appearances away.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I refuse to do that.
- 3:23Speaker 4: And the idea of facing a new picture with littlemited information.
- 3:27Speaker 4: You know, I wasn't a strong minor league player because
- 3:30Speaker 4: I wasn't able to tap into something that I think
- 3:34Speaker 4: was a strength, and that was that was a preparation
- 3:36Speaker 4: for each each each matchup.
- 3:38Speaker 3: You know, it was the something.
- 3:39Speaker 4: It was the thing that I absolutely loved going into
- 3:42Speaker 4: major league baseball. It was like, do you have all
- 3:44Speaker 4: of this information, I know everything about every picture.
- 3:48Speaker 3: This is going to be easy.
- 3:50Speaker 4: I just have to match my strengths with their weaknesses,
- 3:52Speaker 4: or match my strengths with with or I have to
- 3:56Speaker 4: be prepared for their strength and just figure out a
- 3:59Speaker 4: way to hedge you against it.
- 4:02Speaker 1: That's interesting because do you think he would have been
- 4:04Speaker 1: as good a player if you would come along twenty
- 4:08Speaker 1: years earlier, where you did not have that technology and
- 4:11Speaker 1: that opportunity.
- 4:11Speaker 3: No, no, I'm convinced of that. I'm convinced of that.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I don't.
- 4:15Speaker 4: I never once thought of myself as you know, I
- 4:18Speaker 4: use a lot of hyperbole and just you know, I'm this,
- 4:23Speaker 4: I'm not I'm such a great this, or I'm.
- 4:25Speaker 3: The baddest this whatever.
- 4:26Speaker 4: But in reality, you know, I recognize that that I
- 4:31Speaker 4: had a lot of great things go my way, you.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Know, in the back third of my career.
- 4:36Speaker 4: So the ball changed a little bit and I ended
- 4:38Speaker 4: up getting a little bit of a boost from that.
- 4:40Speaker 4: You know, I had all the matchup stuff I had,
- 4:45Speaker 4: you know, I hired private analytics people, I had the
- 4:48Speaker 4: video from when I entered the league. There's a clear
- 4:50Speaker 4: gap between the minor league baseball and the major league baseball.
- 4:53Speaker 4: And I had maybe average power, maybe above average power.
- 4:58Speaker 3: And so I got that little boose. I got that
- 5:02Speaker 3: little boost when I entered the league.
- 5:04Speaker 4: So all, you know, all these things ended up working
- 5:08Speaker 4: out really well for me.
- 5:09Speaker 3: In my mind.
- 5:14Speaker 5: If you're watching us, you already know we're wearing mack
- 5:16Speaker 5: Weldon right now. As we talk about a great brand
- 5:19Speaker 5: that makes things so comfortable and easy to wear. But
- 5:22Speaker 5: if you're listening to the show, let me tell you
- 5:24Speaker 5: a little bit more about mack Weldon with my friend
- 5:26Speaker 5: Aer Kratz.
- 5:28Speaker 6: Yeah, it's comfortable, it's light. It's summertime right now. For
- 5:32Speaker 6: me though, they cater to what I need tall clothes. Normally,
- 5:37Speaker 6: when I buy tall clothes it's like something that's cumbersome
- 5:40Speaker 6: and boxy. It still fits incredibly well, super light, perfect
- 5:46Speaker 6: for the summertime. They got me all covered.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Comfortable performance material can be yours. Mac Weldon is the spot.
- 5:56Speaker 5: Don't sweat the heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly cool
- 5:59Speaker 5: as you look with Mackweld and go to Mackweldon dot
- 6:01Speaker 5: com and get twenty percent off your first order of
- 6:03Speaker 5: one hundred and twenty five bucks or more with promo
- 6:05Speaker 5: code foul. That's m A c K W E L
- 6:07Speaker 5: d o N dot com code f o U L.
- 6:12Speaker 2: What do you think?
- 6:12Speaker 1: Like, I know, because this is your guy, But like,
- 6:15Speaker 1: what would Ted Williams have done with all this all
- 6:20Speaker 1: that information?
- 6:21Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 6:24Speaker 3: No.
- 6:24Speaker 4: It goes to my commentary about it happened to work
- 6:30Speaker 4: out well for me, and maybe maybe when Ted was
- 6:33Speaker 4: playing it just worked out well for him. You know,
- 6:36Speaker 4: I don't know if you because I imagine there may
- 6:39Speaker 4: have been guys that had significant hindrances that still put
- 6:44Speaker 4: together a great career. I remember hearing about Willie May's
- 6:48Speaker 4: moving to Candlestick from I Believe, New York, and they
- 6:52Speaker 4: said that the wind was always blowing in from left field,
- 6:55Speaker 4: and so he couldn't pull the ball successfully and get
- 6:58Speaker 4: as many home runs and extra basist as as he
- 7:02Speaker 4: probably should have. So he had to learn how to
- 7:03Speaker 4: hit the ball the other way, or he had to
- 7:05Speaker 4: maybe not learn, but he had to hit the ball
- 7:07Speaker 4: the other way. There's a lot of things that a player,
- 7:12Speaker 4: these historical great you know, there's a lot of things
- 7:16Speaker 4: we don't know about them. We just see their stats,
- 7:18Speaker 4: but there is a story to be told with all
- 7:19Speaker 4: of them.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Is that what kind of You've always enjoyed that part, right,
- 7:28Speaker 1: like the stories and figuring it out, And what is
- 7:31Speaker 1: different in all that is that maybe one of the
- 7:34Speaker 1: things that draws you to this this new role.
- 7:37Speaker 3: I love great players.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know if it's an egotistical thing or
- 7:43Speaker 4: I'm I'm individual minded. I love hearing about great stories.
- 7:49Speaker 4: I love hearing about people overcoming difficult odds. I can't
- 7:57Speaker 4: tell you how many times that I've played with players
- 7:59Speaker 4: and I been in awe in the same uniform Reds
- 8:02Speaker 4: uniform or All Star Game uniform, that I've been in
- 8:04Speaker 4: awe with their story and hearing about what they had
- 8:06Speaker 4: to overcome. And you know, whether it's Jim Abbott, who
- 8:12Speaker 4: I watched don LB Network do an interview, or Jackie
- 8:15Speaker 4: Robinson breaking the color barrier, or modern day show Ao
- 8:20Speaker 4: Tani pitching and hitting. I love someone breaking the rules
- 8:27Speaker 4: or even maybe not just the game's rules, but what
- 8:32Speaker 4: they view as like their limitations.
- 8:34Speaker 3: They're quote unquote glass ceiling.
- 8:36Speaker 4: And so when it comes to the game, I can,
- 8:39Speaker 4: of course speak to the matchup, and I can do
- 8:42Speaker 4: the very best I can to articulate what we are
- 8:47Speaker 4: seeing from my perspective. But I think that for example,
- 8:52Speaker 4: on Sunday, when the Phillies in the Yankees face off,
- 8:56Speaker 4: it's intriguing to me to hear about to tell the
- 9:00Speaker 4: story about you know it, Like for example, Bryce Harper
- 9:03Speaker 4: is in a position in his career where is he
- 9:07Speaker 4: Is he going to start coasting towards a Hall of
- 9:09Speaker 4: Fame induction or is he gonna fall flat, you know
- 9:13Speaker 4: it is, And I.
- 9:16Speaker 3: Think that's the most intriguing part about the game.
- 9:21Speaker 4: You know, I had this conversation with a buddy, what
- 9:23Speaker 4: would you rather have a great player for twenty years
- 9:29Speaker 4: or one championship inside of twenty years? And I said,
- 9:33Speaker 4: you know, as someone that grew up watching Vince Carter
- 9:36Speaker 4: in Toronto, who didn't produce barely a playoff run with
- 9:39Speaker 4: Tracy McGrady, but Vince was the icon, I would rather
- 9:43Speaker 4: watch a great player. And why because I saw Vince
- 9:49Speaker 4: entertain us every day and lose by three points and finish,
- 9:53Speaker 4: you know, five games under five hundred, and you have
- 9:56Speaker 4: that peak moment like when the Raptors won those surrounding years.
- 10:02Speaker 4: If you tune into a bummy game and you don't
- 10:05Speaker 4: have someone like an Aaron Judge, like a Wan Soda,
- 10:08Speaker 4: like a Vince Carter, like uh, you.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Know, I I'm.
- 10:12Speaker 4: Trying to think of other athletes that carry mediocre franchises.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:17Speaker 4: I feel like I feel like there's something to tune
- 10:20Speaker 4: in for. I you want, you want, you want to
- 10:23Speaker 4: tune in and be Max Mike Trout, I mean Maxy
- 10:27Speaker 4: maximally entertained.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I mean like I remember you know when you you
- 10:34Speaker 1: were there, Billy Hamilton, you would see something new all
- 10:36Speaker 1: the time. Ellie de la Cruz, who see something new
- 10:38Speaker 1: all the time at least a perfect Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Have you watched the Reds at all?
- 10:50Speaker 3: I've caught some.
- 10:52Speaker 4: I've caught a bit here and there, as far as
- 10:55Speaker 4: some of the highlights.
- 10:55Speaker 3: I like checking in with Ellie. I played with Spencer.
- 10:59Speaker 4: There's a few guys that I play with that I
- 11:01Speaker 4: like checking in checking in on. But I would say,
- 11:04Speaker 4: generally speaking, no, I haven't. Uncle Joey goes to bed
- 11:09Speaker 4: pretty early.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Oh Todd, father, are you hitting some games this summer?
- 11:17Speaker 3: What's the deal?
- 11:19Speaker 2: Of course?
- 11:20Speaker 7: And it's real simple, Scottie Braun.
- 11:22Speaker 3: You know how it is.
- 11:22Speaker 7: You go to Seat Geek and you can find any

- 12:16Speaker 1: What do you first remember the first time you saw
- 12:19Speaker 1: Ellie or heard of him or or all these kind
- 12:22Speaker 1: of things, because it was a guy that it was
- 12:24Speaker 1: like this, like, hey, this guy could be pretty good,
- 12:26Speaker 1: this guy could be pretty.
- 12:27Speaker 2: Good, and then this guy is unreal.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I've seen a ton of prospects come through, and
- 12:34Speaker 4: certainly those were tools. So I withheld my optimism, you know,
- 12:40Speaker 4: I had my doubts. A longer guy, strikeout guy, error prone,
- 12:47Speaker 4: guy in the field, reckless on the basis, reckless at
- 12:51Speaker 4: the plate.
- 12:52Speaker 3: But he just.
- 12:55Speaker 4: He just kept putting together really good seasons. And that's undeniable.
- 12:59Speaker 4: After certain point, that's undeniable. And then I was interested
- 13:03Speaker 4: to see how is he going to carry over into
- 13:05Speaker 4: the major leagues.
- 13:05Speaker 3: And I think that.
- 13:09Speaker 4: At least best tool probably is his combination of of
- 13:16Speaker 4: drive and humility. He has that sort of he has
- 13:21Speaker 4: that sort of f you mentality, I'm going to get
- 13:24Speaker 4: this done.
- 13:25Speaker 3: You know. I loved that he got told no.
- 13:28Speaker 4: From the WBC and that he was angry about that
- 13:32Speaker 4: and he thought, you know, I'm going to make you pay.
- 13:36Speaker 3: I'm going to make you pay, you know.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I I love that, you know, he hasn't signed a
- 13:40Speaker 4: contract extension, and I'm I'm not going to speculate, but
- 13:44Speaker 4: that's you know, you want to play for your home country,
- 13:47Speaker 4: and especially as proud as the Dominican players are, they
- 13:50Speaker 4: want to represent their country. So I'm not surprised he
- 13:53Speaker 4: hasn't signed a contract extension sort of thing.
- 13:57Speaker 3: I love that he plays every day.
- 14:00Speaker 4: A lot of those you know a lot of guys,
- 14:02Speaker 4: especially speed guys, want to protect their speed as they
- 14:05Speaker 4: should because a useful tool. And I played one hundred
- 14:08Speaker 4: and sixty two games last year after after you know,
- 14:12Speaker 4: stealing something like sixty bases.
- 14:14Speaker 3: The year before.
- 14:15Speaker 4: You know, the man is impressive because he has great character.
- 14:22Speaker 4: He has great character, and teammates love him, coaches love him.
- 14:28Speaker 3: And I think that every day when he gets done, he.
- 14:31Speaker 4: Knows that he keep put in as much work as
- 14:33Speaker 4: he possibly could to be a better version of himself.
- 14:35Speaker 4: And he happens to be doing it in a Reds uniform.
- 14:38Speaker 4: I mean, he's Barry would say it. He's the best
- 14:40Speaker 4: shortstop since you know Barry, and Barry's the best shortstop
- 14:45Speaker 4: in the in the team's history. So you know, Ellie's
- 14:48Speaker 4: got a ways ways ways to go. Barry's one of
- 14:50Speaker 4: the all time great players in the history of the game.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Very underrated, but you know it's Ellie. It's you know,
- 14:57Speaker 4: Ellie chasing down Barry Larkin.
- 15:02Speaker 2: You know, it's It's interesting.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I think that is one of the things that gets
- 15:06Speaker 1: lost with Ellie is because the physical tools are so vast,
- 15:13Speaker 1: just how smart a baseball player is, how driven he is.
- 15:17Speaker 1: That that is that can be the separator sometimes and
- 15:20Speaker 1: when you put that with those tools, like who knows
- 15:25Speaker 1: what we.
- 15:26Speaker 4: Could see, you have to stay on the field and
- 15:30Speaker 4: get your game reps and oftentimes, sometimes not oftentimes, but
- 15:37Speaker 4: sometimes players opt to take the day off or to
- 15:40Speaker 4: not play through something or to and that that's where
- 15:44Speaker 4: you miss out on that software update. I use that
- 15:46Speaker 4: term all the time. You know, you just have to
- 15:48Speaker 4: continue to update the software. And when you're older, things
- 15:53Speaker 4: fall apart, you're slower, you don't recover as well. And
- 15:56Speaker 4: if you don't have those reps when you're twenty five,
- 16:00Speaker 4: in twenty eight and thirty two, when you're dinged up
- 16:03Speaker 4: and someone didn't push you, maybe it's his maybe it's
- 16:05Speaker 4: his family, or his community, or his friend group, or
- 16:09Speaker 4: just someone on the coaching staff that's saying you're playing man.
- 16:12Speaker 3: You have to learn how to play through things.
- 16:16Speaker 4: You don't get the benefit of those early reps that
- 16:19Speaker 4: teach you at thirty five and thirty eight.
- 16:21Speaker 3: If you want to play that long, yeah, you can
- 16:24Speaker 3: get through it.
- 16:24Speaker 4: You just gotta you know, you just gotta put some
- 16:27Speaker 4: duct tape on it and figure it.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Figure it out. You can be competitive.
- 16:31Speaker 4: And that's the thing I admire most about players, and
- 16:36Speaker 4: Ellie is as much as as great of a representative
- 16:39Speaker 4: as it gets. You know, the Reds fans are lucky,
- 16:42Speaker 4: or Cincinnati is fans in general are fickle, So I
- 16:49Speaker 4: don't want to generalize Cincinnati being a fickle fan base,
- 16:52Speaker 4: because they're not. They're a great fan base. I mean,
- 16:55Speaker 4: I'm not even saying this to to to you know,
- 17:01Speaker 4: be supportive of a city and a fan base that
- 17:04Speaker 4: was supportive of me. Generally speaking, I think Cincinnati's an
- 17:07Speaker 4: excellent fan base. But we can be hard on our stars,
- 17:11Speaker 4: and we can be hard on our high earners.
- 17:14Speaker 3: And really, Ellie is Ellie's.
- 17:18Speaker 4: Gonna make an incredible amount of money, but most importantly,
- 17:22Speaker 4: he'll have earned He'll have earned it both through performance
- 17:25Speaker 4: and through grit and repetition. And you know, I hope
- 17:28Speaker 4: he stays a Red throughout the course of his career.
- 17:33Speaker 4: But you know that's uh, now's the opportunity to take
- 17:37Speaker 4: advantage of his prime if you're a Reds fan and
- 17:39Speaker 4: really enjoy him.
- 17:42Speaker 1: It's it's interesting because you have had like just these
- 17:46Speaker 1: generational type talents. There's been almost a connection each time,
- 17:51Speaker 1: right Like you overlap with Ellie, you overlap with Junior.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Junior overlaps with Barry, Barry overlaps with you know, Concepcion
- 18:01Speaker 1: and the and the tail of that big Red machine
- 18:05Speaker 1: and Eric Davis. Of course, you have these generational talents going.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Back to you know, a lifetime now.
- 18:14Speaker 1: I always just find that fascinating that you can kind
- 18:17Speaker 1: of go that there's been these long stretches of having
- 18:21Speaker 1: that guy that you go to the ballpark for.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I go to the ballpark to see Ken Grippy Jr.
- 18:26Speaker 1: I go to the ballpark to see Joey Botto, I
- 18:27Speaker 1: see the go to the ballpark to see Eli Dayala Cruz.
- 18:29Speaker 2: That's that's pretty special.
- 18:31Speaker 3: It is it is.
- 18:33Speaker 4: And you know, if you were to ask Eric, and
- 18:36Speaker 4: if you were to ask Barry, Eric was as as
- 18:39Speaker 4: talented as Barry, as talented as any player in the
- 18:42Speaker 4: in the league, and you would say the same thing
- 18:44Speaker 4: about Ellie. So it's it's it's it's it's a combination
- 18:49Speaker 4: of of luck and and and work. He's going to
- 18:53Speaker 4: have to be lucky to stay healthy, like we all do.
- 18:55Speaker 4: He's going to have to work to stay healthy. It's
- 18:57Speaker 4: going to have to have a certain amount of grit
- 18:59Speaker 4: to play through, to play through seventy percent. He's already
- 19:03Speaker 4: shown that. So I think that there's a real chance
- 19:06Speaker 4: that that Ellie does continue that sort of passing the
- 19:11Speaker 4: baton from star to star, you know, and it's weird
- 19:15Speaker 4: for I would I'm not saying, I'm I mean whatever.
- 19:18Speaker 4: It started a star sort of thing, and the Reds
- 19:22Speaker 4: fans deserve that. The Reds fans deserve that. So and
- 19:25Speaker 4: it's a great, great fan base. It's a great fan base.
- 19:28Speaker 4: I look forward to a stretch where the team is
- 19:31Speaker 4: really well put together and they go five or eight
- 19:33Speaker 4: years and then all of a sudden, you know, where
- 19:35Speaker 4: the Cardinals of the division or where the Golden State
- 19:37Speaker 4: Warriors of the league sort of thing, And that's going
- 19:41Speaker 4: to be that's the responsibility of the ownership in front
- 19:44Speaker 4: office to really be disciplined and put together a good team.
- 19:47Speaker 3: We'll see if they're capable of doing that.

- 20:50Speaker 1: You've kind of done some stuff in Benda Daytona and
- 20:54Speaker 1: seen some of the minor leaguers.
- 20:56Speaker 2: What have you done there?
- 20:59Speaker 4: Not much I lived, you know, I've got a place
- 21:00Speaker 4: not too far from it, and I pop by the
- 21:03Speaker 4: stadium every now and then. I'm not in the city
- 21:05Speaker 4: right now, but I love watching kids, specifically future major
- 21:10Speaker 4: league kids, get better. And they've got a few kids
- 21:12Speaker 4: that legitimately have a chance, and you know, it's a
- 21:17Speaker 4: I'm not a member of the coaching staff, I'm not
- 21:20Speaker 4: a member of the organization whatsoever, but they were nice
- 21:22Speaker 4: enough to let me through the gate and observe and
- 21:25Speaker 4: chat with the kids. And you know, I stayed out
- 21:27Speaker 4: of the way. I'm mostly observed. So they have a
- 21:29Speaker 4: good staff there.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Do they know who you are? The kids?
- 21:34Speaker 3: Really? Not really? I mean they've got they've got me
- 21:38Speaker 3: and and I.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Think eight other players up on the wall, you know,
- 21:42Speaker 4: big Red Machine guys.
- 21:43Speaker 3: But to be fair, you know, I didn't know. I
- 21:47Speaker 3: didn't know.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Who Dave Concepcion was, or Eric Davis was, or Barry
- 21:51Speaker 4: Larkin was until I got some Cincinnati Reds reps. Until
- 21:55Speaker 4: you realize the context of how special these are guys are,
- 21:58Speaker 4: and you know what and it is. You don't even
- 22:00Speaker 4: realize how special they are until you get done with
- 22:03Speaker 4: a thousand games or fifteen hundred games or two thousand
- 22:06Speaker 4: games played, to realize when you're playing at forty years old,
- 22:09Speaker 4: how the heck did Barry play so well at forty?
- 22:11Speaker 4: How did he you know? How did Dave concepts you
- 22:13Speaker 4: do play all those games? How did Pete Rose play
- 22:16Speaker 4: all those games? How did Johnny Bench catch all those games?
- 22:20Speaker 4: How did you know Tony Perez? You know, it's just
- 22:23Speaker 4: you just asked those questions once you cross the path
- 22:26Speaker 4: and you're like, ohly coow, that's a hard game. It's
- 22:28Speaker 4: just really hard to play at thirty five and thirty
- 22:30Speaker 4: you know, it's just a challenging, challenging game. And the
- 22:33Speaker 4: modern player has everything going for them in terms of
- 22:37Speaker 4: better hotels and better air travel and everything. And you
- 22:40Speaker 4: look back and they're flying commercial and they're staying and
- 22:43Speaker 4: you know they're eating you know, soup and peanut butter sandwiches.
- 22:46Speaker 4: But back in the day at times, so it's you know,
- 22:49Speaker 4: you just have a great deal of respect and intrigue
- 22:52Speaker 4: for what they went through.
- 22:55Speaker 1: What did a year off from the game do for you?
- 23:00Speaker 3: Oh no, I I nothing.
- 23:02Speaker 4: I think one of the concerns you asked me at
- 23:04Speaker 4: the very beginning about how I whether I be nervous. Yeah,
- 23:11Speaker 4: I haven't been watching the game. Only only recently did
- 23:14Speaker 4: I start. Only recently did I start watching the game,
- 23:20Speaker 4: just to make sure I do. You know, I do
- 23:22Speaker 4: my job relatively well. And you know, when you step
- 23:27Speaker 4: away from the game, it changes quickly your year. It's
- 23:30Speaker 4: the same game, of course, but I think that there's
- 23:35Speaker 4: some nuances that change with time, new language, new tools
- 23:43Speaker 4: that people that didn't play use to be able to
- 23:46Speaker 4: articulate what they see that I haven't been paying attention.
- 23:49Speaker 4: To be honest with you, I watched the game. It
- 23:51Speaker 4: looks identical, you know, it looks identical. Some nuances are different.
- 23:59Speaker 4: But then also at the same time, styles change a
- 24:02Speaker 4: little bit. Styles change a little bit, you know what
- 24:04Speaker 4: people are chasing down. So I don't think it'll be
- 24:07Speaker 4: very very hard to catch up. But no, I haven't
- 24:11Speaker 4: been doing very much over the past year, a couple
- 24:13Speaker 4: of years for with regard to baseball.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Did it Did it help to take a little time
- 24:18Speaker 1: away from the game.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I didn't think.
- 24:21Speaker 4: I'll be honest with you, No, I struggled with the
- 24:24Speaker 4: last five years.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I didn't want I wanted to retire when I was
- 24:26Speaker 3: about thirty five. To be honest with you, I was.
- 24:29Speaker 3: I was worn out. Playing hurt wasn't fun, you know.
- 24:34Speaker 4: I played almost my entire career with stuff, as a
- 24:38Speaker 4: lot of athletes do, and certainly the last three, four
- 24:42Speaker 4: or five years, I really didn't, you know, I wanted
- 24:46Speaker 4: to finish off my career because I viewed it as
- 24:48Speaker 4: a responsibility but to myself. But I just I just
- 24:56Speaker 4: wasn't having the fun and fun for me was playing well,
- 25:00Speaker 4: and I.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Didn't even feel like I was playing well anymore. So
- 25:02Speaker 3: it's tough.
- 25:03Speaker 4: It's tough when you're used to getting reps in with
- 25:08Speaker 4: a certain style and your body won't even allow you
- 25:12Speaker 4: to do that, you know, the shoulder bicep thing. Really really,
- 25:15Speaker 4: it wasn't until I got done playing that I realized
- 25:17Speaker 4: how messed up my shoulder was. I mean, I'm out
- 25:20Speaker 4: here golfing and it's it's affecting my game, and you know,
- 25:24Speaker 4: I'm thinking, how the heck.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Did I compete? Facing these guys? Is throwing a bazillion
- 25:29Speaker 3: you know? So, but she just tried to get it done.
- 25:33Speaker 2: You're a golfer now.
- 25:36Speaker 4: I stink. I'm no good. It's something to do. It's social.
- 25:39Speaker 4: It's good.
- 25:41Speaker 1: If you were the knickers and I can see the
- 25:43Speaker 1: little hat and the knickers and the whole, the whole
- 25:45Speaker 1: get up.
- 25:48Speaker 3: No, I've never done that, but I'm not against it.
- 25:50Speaker 3: You know, if.
- 25:51Speaker 4: If if my course calls calls for, if my course
- 25:56Speaker 4: calls for if we have a yeah.
- 25:58Speaker 3: So.
- 26:03Speaker 2: You know, this is how do you do? You?
- 26:10Speaker 1: You kind of go around and you've you've experienced a
- 26:12Speaker 1: lot of things. Do you ever get recognized anywhere?
- 26:16Speaker 4: Sure, Yeah, depending on how far away I am from Cincinnati. Yeah,
- 26:22Speaker 4: the farther away less.
- 26:24Speaker 2: So I wanted to ask you real quick about the clock.
- 26:27Speaker 1: I love the clock. How did I do to come about?
- 26:31Speaker 1: I think it's just an amazing thing.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know. I I've traveled a little bit
- 26:40Speaker 3: and you.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Stop by, you know, you stop by uh everywhere, you know,
- 26:46Speaker 4: everywhere I went to Pebble Beach, there's a clock.
- 26:50Speaker 3: I mean, New York right now, there's a clock. You know,
- 26:53Speaker 3: everywhere has a clock.
- 26:55Speaker 4: And you get to put the name something on top,
- 26:57Speaker 4: and I'll kay, all these all these beautiful places have clocks.
- 27:02Speaker 4: And so I thought, I think Cincinnati's I think it's
- 27:06Speaker 4: almost undertold in terms.
- 27:08Speaker 3: Of what it should be.
- 27:10Speaker 4: And I just thought, you know, the fan base is
- 27:12Speaker 4: great city's great first major league team.
- 27:16Speaker 3: We why can't we fit in with that? Why can't
- 27:18Speaker 3: we be special? Yeah?
- 27:20Speaker 4: I've got one team, and I want the very best
- 27:24Speaker 4: for a pride of ownership sort of thing.
- 27:25Speaker 3: And then on top of that, I don't know.
- 27:28Speaker 4: You know, I I was lucky, lucky enough to be
- 27:31Speaker 4: able to support the community financially and with my time, and.
- 27:37Speaker 3: I just I just love the community. I love it.
- 27:40Speaker 4: I don't I don't want to live in Cincinnati because
- 27:42Speaker 4: I don't have a job there, and you know, I
- 27:45Speaker 4: don't have like a reason to work there, so you know,
- 27:48Speaker 4: it's difficult. My personality is like I don't want to
- 27:51Speaker 4: be recognized all the time while I'm walking down the
- 27:54Speaker 4: street or getting a coffee. That's just not my nature.
- 27:57Speaker 4: But I you know, if there was a job there,
- 27:59Speaker 4: I would live there. If there's a job and you
- 28:01Speaker 4: know boys Idaho, I would live there. But it's more
- 28:05Speaker 4: about my love for the city and how I want
- 28:08Speaker 4: to support it. And I hope, you know, I hope
- 28:10Speaker 4: for the rest of my life I can support the
- 28:12Speaker 4: city in my ways.
- 28:15Speaker 2: Would you ever want to coach or manage?
- 28:17Speaker 3: No, there's I don't know. You know, this is I'll
- 28:23Speaker 3: be transparent. There's like a certain amount of.
- 28:29Speaker 4: A willingness to give up your life that coaches have,
- 28:33Speaker 4: like a full on dedication.
- 28:35Speaker 2: You know.
- 28:35Speaker 4: This NBC responsibility is once a week, and I can
- 28:39Speaker 4: always say no, you know, I can always say no.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Whereas coaching, it's like you have to be there twelve
- 28:47Speaker 4: thirteen hours, fourteen hours a day and you're in these
- 28:50Speaker 4: hotels and busting, and if you're in the big leagues,
- 28:52Speaker 4: it's planes and hotels and so no, I'm not motivated
- 28:56Speaker 4: to coach. I don't see a reason too, no.
- 29:01Speaker 8: I figured, but I'd much rather if you were to,
- 29:05Speaker 8: if you were to ask me what I coach the
- 29:07Speaker 8: Boys and Girls club or an id RBI program, you know,
- 29:09Speaker 8: I would do that for free for fifty years.
- 29:12Speaker 2: You know.
- 29:12Speaker 3: I love It's the only thing.
- 29:14Speaker 4: It's the only thing I miss about baseball being able
- 29:16Speaker 4: to support the community, Cincinnati community.
- 29:18Speaker 3: It's the only thing like I miss.
- 29:20Speaker 4: I missed going to the ballpark after a game and
- 29:23Speaker 4: seeing the kids and coaching and helping out in whatever
- 29:26Speaker 4: way I can. So yeah, as far as coaching, ah,
- 29:30Speaker 4: that's all right.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Well well, Joe, I just want to thank you for
- 29:34Speaker 1: your time. I appreciate it and really looking forward to
- 29:38Speaker 1: sing it this weekend. And I'm sure you will be fantastic.
- 29:42Speaker 1: I've told you that, and I have zero doubt that
- 29:45Speaker 1: you're you're going to be as great at that as
- 29:47Speaker 1: you were as a player and Hall of Fame player,
- 29:51Speaker 1: my vote at least you've got, so I appreciate it,
- 29:55Speaker 1: and thanks for joining us.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Appreciate it.
- 29:57Speaker 4: Good to see you, Trent. Good luck the rest of
- 29:59Speaker 4: the year. Oh yeah, at the dog I'm at the
- 30:01Speaker 4: dog park right now.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Nice new dog.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Yeah she's good. She's a good girl. She gotta get
- 30:07Speaker 4: out and play. I gotta go spray her down. I'll
- 30:10Speaker 4: talk to you later, see you.
- 30:12Speaker 2: Thanks Joey.
