- 0:20Speaker 1: Happy Monday, everybody. Happy football season to all of you.
- 0:26Speaker 1: College football is back on the Sean O'Connell show. We've
- 0:32Speaker 1: got a fun one lined up for you. Ari Temkin
- 0:35Speaker 1: in 30 minutes. We've got a Morgan Scali weekly press conference.
- 0:40Speaker 1: You grew accustomed in the Kyle Whittingham era to hearing
- 0:43Speaker 1: Monday press conferences at 11 a.m. Now they are at noon.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Morgan's going to be doing them at noon. We will
- 0:50Speaker 1: carry that thing live. Our guy, Porter Larson, is headed
- 0:53Speaker 1: up there with the old machine, and we will bring
- 0:56Speaker 1: Morgan Scali's weekly presser to you as it unfolds from
- 1:01Speaker 1: the facility. And then Zach Moss, the Utah reporter, running
- 1:05Speaker 1: back legend who is now, we can officially say, also
- 1:09Speaker 1: going to be reporting on the sidelines on your Utah broadcast,
- 1:13Speaker 1: your Utah football broadcast, which, of course, you can hear
- 1:17Speaker 1: right here on your home of the Utes, ESPN at 700.
- 1:20Speaker 1: We look forward to talking with all of those individuals today.
- 1:24Speaker 1: The season is indeed back. You had week zero games,
- 1:29Speaker 1: San Jose State, USC, North Carolina, TCU. What are you doing,
- 1:33Speaker 1: Horned Frogs? You killed us! You made us look bad
- 1:38Speaker 1: in the Big 12, but that's fine. Virginia looked really
- 1:42Speaker 1: good against NC State. And Stanford pulled off the comeback
- 1:48Speaker 1: victory in the late cover against Hawaii. 37-27. Also, Florida State, yikes! 34-17,
- 1:55Speaker 1: they win against New Mexico State. That one should not
- 2:03Speaker 1: have been close. And Memphis beats UNLV. Former Utah quarterbacks coach,
- 2:10Speaker 1: offensive coordinator Dan Mullen is still the head coach at UNLV.
- 2:15Speaker 1: And tough start to their season down in Sin City.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Let's talk for just a second about the TCU-North Carolina game.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland. We discussed how this was one
- 2:33Speaker 1: of the sparing opportunities for the Big 12 Conference to
- 2:37Speaker 1: make a good impression on the national landscape. You've got
- 2:40Speaker 1: a couple other ones coming up this week. Baylor against Auburn, Colorado,
- 2:44Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. Those are important games. I don't think the
- 2:50Speaker 1: West Virginia-Coastal Carolina game carries the same weight to it,
- 2:54Speaker 1: but if Baylor can beat Auburn... Auburn is a seven-point
- 2:59Speaker 1: favorite in that one. That's a good thing for this
- 3:01Speaker 1: conference and a good thing for Dave Aranda. If Colorado
- 3:06Speaker 1: can somehow find a way against Georgia Tech, I'd probably
- 3:09Speaker 1: be even more surprised if that thing happens. Of course,
- 3:12Speaker 1: Utah's got a Thursday night game against Idaho. We'll talk
- 3:15Speaker 1: about the Idaho game as well and what we can
- 3:17Speaker 1: expect throughout the week from the Vandals. TCU against North Carolina.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Jaden Gregg, the former... a Harvard quarterback now playing for
- 3:29Speaker 1: TCU finished 30 of, or excuse me, 20 of 32
- 3:33Speaker 1: in the passing game, 175 yards, an abysmal five and
- 3:37Speaker 1: a half yards per completion for Jaden Craig. They ran
- 3:42Speaker 1: the ball. TCU did much better. Jeremy Payne had 25
- 3:44Speaker 1: carries for 142 yards, but the offense for TCU is
- 3:51Speaker 1: scored seven points. They also got a field goal, but
- 3:54Speaker 1: they also gave up a safety, which means that their
- 3:58Speaker 1: net in this game, the offensive net for TCU was
- 4:02Speaker 1: five points. And even if you give the field goal credit,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you give the offense credit for the field goal because
- 4:10Speaker 1: they led the drive that resulted in those three points.
- 4:13Speaker 1: It's still only an eight point net for an offense
- 4:16Speaker 1: because you gave up a safety. Bad, bad, bad stuff.
- 4:24Speaker 1: 15 to 10, you lose to a North Carolina team
- 4:27Speaker 1: that now suddenly everyone is like, oh, wait, wait, Bill
- 4:30Speaker 1: Belichick's got it figured out. His second year is going
- 4:32Speaker 1: to be a lot different than his first year. Well,
- 4:34Speaker 1: it's not. He scored 15 points. Knock it off. If
- 4:40Speaker 1: you're TCU, you're this TCU defense, you're side-eyeing The offense,
- 4:50Speaker 1: and you're going, guys, Sonny Dyches is a coach who's
- 4:55Speaker 1: better known for his offensive prowess and his offensive genius
- 4:59Speaker 1: than for anything that he's ever done defensively. What's going on?
- 5:04Speaker 1: Why can't you move the ball? TCU was scoreless in
- 5:07Speaker 1: the final three quarters. They only gave up 90 rushing
- 5:14Speaker 1: yards to North Carolina. Ultimately, it is the Tar Heels
- 5:25Speaker 1: and the ACC who emerge victorious from the Aer Lingus
- 5:29Speaker 1: College Football Classic Aviva Stadium Dublin game. 15-10, North Carolina wins.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So the Big 12 will not be relying on TCU.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And my overreaction, because of course that's what you do
- 5:43Speaker 1: the first time you see a team, my overreaction is
- 5:46Speaker 1: to say, you know what, maybe that... TCU game that
- 5:50Speaker 1: I was a little bit worried about for the university
- 5:52Speaker 1: of Utah is actually not something we need to worry
- 5:56Speaker 1: about at all. Of course, a lot can happen between
- 6:00Speaker 1: now and week, whatever that is nine, but I'm still
- 6:04Speaker 1: going to say as of August 31st in the year
- 6:09Speaker 1: of our Lord, 2026 TCU, not a threat, not.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Worried.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Not skirt. TCU, November. Can't wait. TCU, just regular frogs.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Not even horned anymore. The TCU frogs. That's what they
- 6:32Speaker 1: have to give up on this after that performance. They
- 6:34Speaker 1: have to take out the horned. Can you imagine if
- 6:37Speaker 1: there was like some sort of bet, some sort of
- 6:40Speaker 1: thing that you could do that? Where it's like, look,
- 6:44Speaker 1: change their hand signal to this, right? Instead of. It's
- 6:48Speaker 1: just a little, it's it, instead of the weird, like
- 6:51Speaker 1: horns knuckles, they just a little frog mouth. Yeah. A
- 6:57Speaker 1: little shadow puppet frog thing. They take the helmet decal,
- 7:01Speaker 1: the logo. You just have to make it a smooth
- 7:03Speaker 1: frog instead of a frog with the, the spiny scales
- 7:07Speaker 1: all over it.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I guess you should have won. You just have to
- 7:10Speaker 1: put a picture of Kermit. Hey, you're the frogs now.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Hey, I remember when Zachariah was still filling in for you.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Shout out to Zachariah. Shout out to our guy, Zachariah,
- 7:23Speaker 1: who still, by the way, not only listens, but watches
- 7:27Speaker 1: us on YouTube. Love that. Love that, Zachariah. We still
- 7:30Speaker 1: love you, dude. He'll get a kick out of this.
- 7:34Speaker 3: We were doing, because I was telling him, hey, TCU
- 7:38Speaker 3: was a big Mountain West rival for Utah 20 years ago.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Because I think we were asking, who is.
- 7:44Speaker 3: going to be Utah's second biggest conference rival besides BYU,
- 7:48Speaker 3: and I was making the case for TCU. And so
- 7:51Speaker 3: I was doing, we're going to do Horned Frog down
- 7:54Speaker 3: tonight at the TCU game. And it looked, the Horned
- 7:59Speaker 3: Frog down looks super awkward, by the way. Like, it's
- 8:02Speaker 3: either this way or this way.
- 8:04Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 8:06Speaker 1: That way's worse. That way's way worse. That way's way worse.
- 8:10Speaker 1: At the end of the day, this TCU team should
- 8:13Speaker 1: not perform the way that they performed against North Carolina.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And here's the... Here's the most aggravating thing. If you're
- 8:21Speaker 1: a football fan, if you were rooting because of the
- 8:23Speaker 1: big 12 interest for TCU and I was right. If
- 8:26Speaker 1: you're Sonny Dyches, if you're a coach on that staff,
- 8:29Speaker 1: if you're somebody who's even like remotely invested in a
- 8:33Speaker 1: TCU positive outcome, which is that's me, I've remotely invested.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I'm not like, I really need TCU to win this game.
- 8:40Speaker 1: I'm like, it would be a good little feather in
- 8:42Speaker 1: the cap. at one, one point conference point for the
- 8:46Speaker 1: big 12. Beyond that, I'm not rooting for the big
- 8:48Speaker 1: 12 conference. Like who cares? But I'm, I'm remotely invested
- 8:54Speaker 1: and to watch a team lose the game on an
- 8:58Speaker 1: offsides penalty is horrific. That should happen in little league
- 9:05Speaker 1: and not after, if that happens at a high school game,
- 9:09Speaker 1: you're talking about how undisciplined that team is. how poor
- 9:12Speaker 1: the coaching is, the fact that it should not be–
- 9:18Speaker 1: guys who are going to do that should not be
- 9:20Speaker 1: on the field, which then again goes back to coaching.
- 9:25Speaker 1: For you to be drawn off sides on– was it
- 9:29Speaker 1: third and one or fourth and one? On a game-deciding
- 9:33Speaker 1: play potentially to give up the first down– as a
- 9:39Speaker 1: division one college football player, as a division two college
- 9:42Speaker 1: football player beyond, maybe, maybe you can get away with
- 9:46Speaker 1: it past little league. If you're, but if you're a
- 9:47Speaker 1: varsity high school player and you give up that play,
- 9:51Speaker 1: that's not really like you are now below varsity level.
- 9:55Speaker 1: You got to go back to the sophomore team. That
- 9:57Speaker 1: might even be below JV. You can't, do that. If
- 10:03Speaker 1: you haven't practiced that in situational football, or if your
- 10:07Speaker 1: linebackers or the D lineman next to you, or the
- 10:11Speaker 1: entire roster on the sideline is telling you, not telling
- 10:15Speaker 1: you to hold your water. If you haven't worked that,
- 10:17Speaker 1: if you haven't had that front of mind, okay, they're
- 10:21Speaker 1: going to, they're going to try and draw us offsides here.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Don't fall for a hard count. Don't fall for a flinch.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Don't fall for anything. You cannot lose a game on
- 10:29Speaker 1: an offsides penalty.
- 10:30Speaker 2: TCU.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I know it's the first game of the season and
- 10:33Speaker 1: things are a little bit sloppier in that, but goodness
- 10:37Speaker 1: in a game deciding scenario in an either this drive
- 10:40Speaker 1: continues or it doesn't scenario, you give up that penalty.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I know it's an individual problem. but it's not, it's
- 10:49Speaker 1: a team problem. It's a coaching problem. And it's not
- 10:51Speaker 1: something that a Sonny Dykes team can get away with.
- 10:53Speaker 1: It's not, he's not a first year head coach. He's
- 10:56Speaker 1: not a guy who just wet behind the years wide-eyed.
- 10:59Speaker 1: I've never been to Dublin before. This is crazy. I
- 11:02Speaker 1: don't know what to do. You have to have your
- 11:05Speaker 1: guys prepared. This guy was coaching in the national championship game.
- 11:09Speaker 1: It's insane. Like this.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:12Speaker 1: To give it a, to lose on a penalty or
- 11:15Speaker 1: is the biggest gut punch. There is it's worse than
- 11:18Speaker 1: anything you can. I mean, if you get, if you
- 11:21Speaker 1: get juked out of your drawers, that is less embarrassing
- 11:27Speaker 1: than being, losing the game on a penalty.
- 11:29Speaker 3: Speaker 0 1 it's more acceptable. You would think from
- 11:32Speaker 3: a coaching perspective, from a fan's perspective, it's more acceptable
- 11:36Speaker 3: to get embarrassed on the actual play, getting beat on
- 11:42Speaker 3: an actual play and maybe embarrassed that way. Then giving
- 11:45Speaker 3: up a penalty. They didn't even have to run a
- 11:47Speaker 3: play to beat you. Yeah, that's bad.
- 11:51Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I'll say this to my reaction as far as the
- 11:56Speaker 3: Big 12 perspective, because unfortunately, OC, no one has to,
- 12:02Speaker 3: as a fan base of a team in the Big 12,
- 12:03Speaker 3: like Utah fans, or if you're a BYU fan listening,
- 12:06Speaker 3: shout out to our resident BYU fan in the other one.
- 12:11Speaker 3: You don't have to root for the Big 12 team
- 12:14Speaker 3: Every time there's a big 12 game on, but the
- 12:17Speaker 3: nature of the hierarchy of the power for conferences, it
- 12:22Speaker 3: kind of behooves you as a, as a BYU fan,
- 12:26Speaker 3: as a Utah fan, if TCU beats North Carolina in
- 12:31Speaker 3: a non-conference game, if Colorado upsets Georgia tech in a
- 12:35Speaker 3: non-conference game, Baylor beats Auburn in these inter power for
- 12:39Speaker 3: conference matchups, If you're a BYU fan in week two,
- 12:43Speaker 3: it helps you if Utah beats Arkansas, right? So SEC
- 12:49Speaker 3: and Big Ten, they don't even have to worry about that.
- 12:52Speaker 3: But you kind of do have to worry about it
- 12:54Speaker 3: in the Big 12. So I'll say this. From that perspective,
- 12:58Speaker 3: it's a blow for the Big 12 conference in week
- 13:01Speaker 3: one because North Carolina is not expected to do much
- 13:03Speaker 3: this year, and you just lost to that North Carolina team.
- 13:09Speaker 1: But some.
- 13:10Speaker 3: things to sort of begin to explain it away that
- 13:14Speaker 3: are plausible are one. We saw how badly Iowa state
- 13:19Speaker 3: and Kansas state played in the Aer Lingus classic in Dublin,
- 13:23Speaker 3: because traveling internationally, when you never do that, that, that
- 13:28Speaker 3: can be hard to be ready.
- 13:29Speaker 1: To play a game with that, with that kind of load.
- 13:32Speaker 1: So there's that. The other thing is.
- 13:36Speaker 3: It's not, at least you didn't lose to a big
- 13:38Speaker 3: 10 or sec team. It's not like anyone's, nationally is
- 13:41Speaker 3: going to be like, you know what? We hate the
- 13:44Speaker 3: big 12 more because they lost to a mid-level ACC team.
- 13:47Speaker 3: If they had lost to a mid-level, like a Mississippi state,
- 13:51Speaker 3: you got to.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Know you'd get you. They, I think this would be
- 13:54Speaker 1: way worse. No, you know, it's worse to lose to
- 13:56Speaker 1: the ACC team because you have no chance of catching
- 14:00Speaker 1: anybody in the big 10 or the SEC. You have
- 14:04Speaker 1: no chance in the eyes of anyone who matters in
- 14:07Speaker 1: catching the big 10 or the SEC. So If Utah
- 14:12Speaker 1: went into Indiana and beat the Hoosiers, no one is going, Hey,
- 14:16Speaker 1: big 12 might be a better conference this year than
- 14:19Speaker 1: the big 10. If, if Texas tech beat Oregon and
- 14:24Speaker 1: Utah beat Indiana and BYU beat Michigan and Texas, Kansas
- 14:30Speaker 1: state beat Ohio state. Nobody in the country is going
- 14:34Speaker 1: to go.
- 14:34Speaker 2: Yep.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Big 12 is actually a better football conference. I mean,
- 14:37Speaker 1: if all of that happened, they'd be crazy. If they didn't,
- 14:41Speaker 1: I would say that, but nobody nationally would be like, wow,
- 14:44Speaker 1: what a fluke that was. What a strange week that was.
- 14:46Speaker 1: You can, if you're the big 12, you can outpace
- 14:50Speaker 1: the ACC. It's your last hope. You have to catch them,
- 14:55Speaker 1: but you have.
- 14:56Speaker 3: The world's tallest short guy in, in the world, in the,
- 14:59Speaker 3: in the eyes of national media and the decision makers.
- 15:02Speaker 1: To be, to be the fourth of the power for conferences,
- 15:05Speaker 1: which in reality in football right now, you are from
- 15:08Speaker 1: a result standpoint, because what did we see last year?
- 15:11Speaker 1: The big 10 for the third straight year, prove that
- 15:14Speaker 1: they are the best conference in college football. The sec
- 15:17Speaker 1: was not in the national championship game, but the ACC
- 15:21Speaker 1: had a team there. And I know it's like, it's
- 15:26Speaker 1: Miami and Miami is not to be judged the same
- 15:29Speaker 1: way that other ACC teams are. There are Miami Clemson,
- 15:35Speaker 1: Florida state should be handled a little bit differently.
- 15:40Speaker 3: And if North Carolina ever gets their act together under
- 15:42Speaker 3: Bill Belichick and maybe this is the first step towards
- 15:44Speaker 3: doing that, then they would be in that group too.
- 15:46Speaker 1: They have the sort of exposure, the notoriety to get there.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Same with Duke, but more on the basketball front. But
- 15:54Speaker 1: that's also true with North Carolina. The ACC has these
- 15:59Speaker 1: sort of near premium brands, I think is the right
- 16:05Speaker 1: way to say that. They're not blue bloods necessarily. Although Miami,
- 16:10Speaker 1: you could make a pretty sincere case for.
- 16:12Speaker 3: And Clemson because of recent national championships, but it's not
- 16:16Speaker 3: all that recent anymore.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Well, and Clemson also like you go back far enough
- 16:20Speaker 1: in history and you'd say, Oh, like the dabble sweaty
- 16:23Speaker 1: Clemson was a, a stirring of the echoes. That was
- 16:26Speaker 1: like a recapturing of the once proud program. So like
- 16:31Speaker 1: but the big 12 does not have that. So what
- 16:33Speaker 1: the big 12 has to rely on now is the
- 16:36Speaker 1: big 12 has to rely on. We are better than
- 16:38Speaker 1: you now. We are better. Our mid-level teams are better
- 16:42Speaker 1: than your mid-level teams. Our top-level teams are capable of
- 16:46Speaker 1: making it to a national championship game like your top-level
- 16:49Speaker 1: Miami team did last year. And that's why so many
- 16:52Speaker 1: people in Big 12 country are just like, please, Texas Tech,
- 16:56Speaker 1: make good on all of this spending. Some of them
- 16:58Speaker 1: are like, please, BYU, make good on all this spending.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Because last year was disastrous for the Big 12. not
- 17:07Speaker 1: in a bowl game record scenario, not even in a non-conference, out-of-conference,
- 17:13Speaker 1: preseason-type scenario like these games. Big 12 represented well in
- 17:17Speaker 1: those games. But when it came to the college football playoff,
- 17:20Speaker 1: your dominant champions got mollywhopped, got worked, were made to
- 17:25Speaker 1: look like that Texas Tech team was made to look
- 17:27Speaker 1: like you don't belong here. James Madison accounted better for
- 17:31Speaker 1: themselves than Texas Tech did in a playoff game.
- 17:34Speaker 2: So.
- 17:35Speaker 1: the big 12 and maybe I'm more prone to this
- 17:41Speaker 1: because I spent years doing this in the past. pack
- 17:45Speaker 1: 12 covering that at a conference level and be like,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I promise our teams are as good as these other teams.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I promise this conference is just as good. I promise
- 17:53Speaker 1: we're great. And in the final year of the pack 12,
- 17:56Speaker 1: after the nail had already been put in the coffin,
- 17:58Speaker 1: they had their best year of inter-conference football. You're like,
- 18:01Speaker 1: I told you, but crap, it's over. It's too, it's
- 18:04Speaker 1: too late. Washington made a national championship game. And I
- 18:07Speaker 1: think the pack 12 that year went like six and
- 18:10Speaker 1: one in bowl games or something stupid.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Oregon was, if it was a 12 team playoff that year,
- 18:14Speaker 3: Oregon would have been a playoff team.
- 18:16Speaker 1: They were almost as good as Washington.
- 18:18Speaker 6: Yes.
- 18:18Speaker 1: It was like, it was one of those things where
- 18:20Speaker 1: you're just like, oh, well it's too, too little too late.
- 18:23Speaker 1: But the big 12, I mean, We're going to like,
- 18:28Speaker 1: let this go away after today. I'm not going to
- 18:31Speaker 1: keep harping on this unless it becomes a trend and
- 18:34Speaker 1: a problem. But if, if we get to like week
- 18:38Speaker 1: three and the big 12s record against sec, ACC big
- 18:43Speaker 1: 10 is really bad. The narrative is going to persist.
- 18:50Speaker 1: And by the way, this will absolutely be a one bid.
- 18:54Speaker 1: If we're staying at a 12 team conference or 12
- 18:56Speaker 1: team college football playoff, this will be a one bid
- 18:59Speaker 1: league forever and ever. They're going to start treating you
- 19:02Speaker 1: like the automatic qualifiers from the F from the, the
- 19:06Speaker 1: group of four group of six, six group of six.
- 19:09Speaker 1: You're now, you're now looking at a situation where you
- 19:13Speaker 1: can less afford to lose the race to at the
- 19:18Speaker 1: fourth and fifth place level than you ever could. If
- 19:22Speaker 1: North Carolina is the fourth best team in the ACC,
- 19:26Speaker 1: and we'll have to let the season play out. Virginia
- 19:29Speaker 1: looked pretty good this weekend, so maybe North Carolina is
- 19:31Speaker 1: a middle-of-the-pack team. Maybe they're slightly above that team. Maybe
- 19:34Speaker 1: they're the best team in the conference. We don't know.
- 19:37Speaker 1: But let's say that North Carolina is where we think
- 19:39Speaker 1: they are, and they're kind of like a top four
- 19:42Speaker 1: to six ACC team. If your TCU squad that played
- 19:48Speaker 1: against them head to head is also top four to
- 19:51Speaker 1: six in the big 12 and you lose that. And
- 19:55Speaker 1: it's as direct a comparison as you're going to get
- 19:58Speaker 1: the big 12 conference can't afford that. They just can't
- 20:02Speaker 1: because you're already losing the narrative battle and you already
- 20:05Speaker 1: don't have the branding goodwill here. BYU, Utah, and now
- 20:11Speaker 1: Texas tech who hasn't done anything ever except spend money
- 20:14Speaker 1: and make noise. Those are your flagship brands. And as
- 20:18Speaker 1: much as we love our in-state schools here, as much
- 20:21Speaker 1: as we love the University of Utah, I have unfortunately
- 20:24Speaker 1: had to make this point many, many, many times. If
- 20:27Speaker 1: you go to the mall, you can find North Carolina
- 20:30Speaker 1: gear at your local sporting goods store when you live
- 20:33Speaker 1: in Salt Lake City. If you go to Charlotte, North Carolina,
- 20:38Speaker 1: or you go to Durham or you go to Raleigh,
- 20:41Speaker 1: you cannot under any circumstance find Utes gear in their
- 20:46Speaker 1: store because the brand just doesn't carry the same weight.
- 20:50Speaker 1: And I know that's mostly basketball and not football, but
- 20:54Speaker 1: the point stands, you can't afford to lose these games.
- 20:57Speaker 1: So TCU strike against you. you're not invited to the
- 21:02Speaker 1: big 12 party next year. If you keep doing this crap,
- 21:05Speaker 1: I think it even looks even worse. If TCU ends
- 21:08Speaker 1: up that that's their only loss on the season up until,
- 21:11Speaker 1: up until the Utah game and North Carolina is who
- 21:14Speaker 1: we think they'll be somewhere around 500 for the season,
- 21:18Speaker 1: maybe a little under 500, like they were last year.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Like that looks even worse for the big 12. And
- 21:24Speaker 1: you nailed it as the reason why, like, again, Don't
- 21:28Speaker 1: take this as, I don't root for conference, I just
- 21:31Speaker 1: root for my team.
- 21:31Speaker 5: Fine.
- 21:32Speaker 3: But you have to understand the reason why it helps
- 21:35Speaker 3: your team if a team that's not your rival, nothing
- 21:39Speaker 3: really to do with you other than they share the
- 21:41Speaker 3: same conference as you, loses a game like that, or
- 21:46Speaker 3: wins a game like that, it helps your team, loses
- 21:47Speaker 3: a game like that, it hurts your favorite team, because
- 21:52Speaker 3: these playoff bids are done by a subjective committee And
- 21:56Speaker 3: this subjective committee already thinks you might just be a
- 22:00Speaker 3: one bid team in a 12 team field in perpetuity.
- 22:04Speaker 3: You just kind of cemented that. You cement that with
- 22:08Speaker 3: losses like this by TCU.
- 22:10Speaker 1: So now you're in this weird place where you have
- 22:15Speaker 1: to kind of hope North Carolina is better than they
- 22:17Speaker 1: really are. And maybe now you also have to hope
- 22:20Speaker 1: that TCU is worse than we expected them to be
- 22:23Speaker 1: so that you can say, oh, well, North Carolina is
- 22:25Speaker 1: the third best team in the ACC and TCU is
- 22:28Speaker 1: the ninth best team in the big 12. That's why
- 22:31Speaker 1: that was a close game. So if our ninth best
- 22:32Speaker 1: team almost beat your third best team, we're the better conference.
- 22:35Speaker 5: Right.
- 22:36Speaker 1: And I don't know how many, I, I, I genuinely
- 22:39Speaker 1: don't know how many big 12 ACC crossover games there
- 22:44Speaker 1: are this year. But the most important one will play
- 22:50Speaker 1: out the most important out of conference game. And it's
- 22:54Speaker 1: kind of a big 12 ACC because of what Notre
- 22:56Speaker 1: Dame has with the ACC. Like the most important of
- 23:00Speaker 1: these is of course going to be playing out in
- 23:02Speaker 1: Provo mid season when Notre Dame comes to Lavelle Edwards stadium.
- 23:07Speaker 1: And of course the narratives are more, they're built more
- 23:12Speaker 1: importantly at the top of these conferences. So now the
- 23:15Speaker 1: sincere hope is North Carolina and TCU are not factors
- 23:22Speaker 1: in conference championship conversations at all, especially TCU, because if
- 23:27Speaker 1: you lost the out of, you want your, your best performers.
- 23:31Speaker 1: It's why honestly, like when Utah won their first PAC
- 23:35Speaker 1: 12 championship, that was for us, wonderful, amazing celebratory, fantastic
- 23:42Speaker 1: for the PAC 12 conference. It wasn't their favorite look.
- 23:47Speaker 1: It wasn't because that year times because the Oregon was
- 23:50Speaker 1: a team that probably would have made the playoff if
- 23:52Speaker 1: they don't lose to Utah twice. And USC probably makes
- 23:57Speaker 1: the playoff if they don't lose to Utah. More importantly,
- 24:00Speaker 1: the PAC 12 looked at it because BYU, the BYU
- 24:03Speaker 1: fans were doing that thing where it said, well, we're
- 24:05Speaker 1: actually the PAC 12 champs. Cause we beat your PAC 12.
- 24:07Speaker 1: They won what? Five games against PAC 12 teams that year.
- 24:10Speaker 1: That was crazy. And Obviously Utah had also lost to
- 24:14Speaker 1: a group of, at that time, a group of five
- 24:17Speaker 1: team before they won. And it's easy for us because
- 24:22Speaker 1: we pay attention and we know the real story. It's
- 24:24Speaker 1: easy for us to say, well, hold on. That was,
- 24:28Speaker 1: you were starting the wrong guy.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Cam starting both those games. You probably, you win at
- 24:33Speaker 3: least one of those. If not both.
- 24:37Speaker 1: You probably win them both.
- 24:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:38Speaker 1: And now you're a college football playoff team instead. But
- 24:42Speaker 1: you can't revise history. You have to tell it like
- 24:44Speaker 1: it was. They started the wrong quarterback. They lost. They
- 24:47Speaker 1: ended up winning a conference championship. And it was a
- 24:51Speaker 1: seminal moment for Utah football. It's one of the most
- 24:53Speaker 1: important seasons this program has ever had. It was an
- 24:57Speaker 1: absolute blast to watch. It was incredible. But if you're
- 25:01Speaker 1: sitting in USC shoes, in that case, Oregon shoes, Washington shoes,
- 25:05Speaker 1: the conference office, you're going like, man, I really wish
- 25:10Speaker 1: they would have started the right quarterback at the beginning
- 25:12Speaker 1: of the season so that everyone realized how good this
- 25:15Speaker 1: team actually is or was capable of being because of
- 25:18Speaker 1: their record would then be different. TCU. I'm now rooting
- 25:24Speaker 1: against you actively Sonny. And I've always been because going
- 25:28Speaker 1: all the way back to when Sonny Dyches was coaching
- 25:30Speaker 1: Louisiana tech, And that's him. He brought that team out
- 25:35Speaker 1: of like, he had like the Motes kid. He had
- 25:38Speaker 1: some unbelievable guys like Ryan Motes was his name. He's
- 25:43Speaker 1: like five foot eight, like 165 pounds. And Sonny Dykes
- 25:48Speaker 1: was using him and made him one of the best
- 25:50Speaker 1: running backs in the country. If he'd have been anywhere else,
- 25:52Speaker 1: or we'd have been in the transfer transfer portal era,
- 25:56Speaker 1: things would have been very different for that guy and
- 25:57Speaker 1: very different for Sonny Dykes. in that time, but they
- 26:00Speaker 1: were playing Utah state back in those days. And I
- 26:02Speaker 1: was just like, Holy cow, this lot tech team is
- 26:04Speaker 1: a lot of fun to watch. I've been a fan
- 26:06Speaker 1: of Sonny Dykes. I've been a supporter of Sonny Dykes
- 26:09Speaker 1: when he was in Cal, I was in the Bay
- 26:11Speaker 1: area and I was like, hold on, just give him
- 26:12Speaker 1: some time. It's going to work here. And then weirdly
- 26:15Speaker 1: it never did. I think it's because Sonny Dyches is
- 26:18Speaker 1: a Texas guy, is a South guy. It doesn't work
- 26:22Speaker 1: in the Bay Area the way that he was doing things.
- 26:25Speaker 1: But I've always been a Sonny Dyches apologist and supporter.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Now I'm actively rooting against you, Sonny, because you embarrassed us.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Egg on the face. Your offense looked atrocious against the
- 26:37Speaker 1: North Carolina team that I think when it all shakes
- 26:39Speaker 1: out is actually not going to have that great of
- 26:42Speaker 1: a defense. On the fact.
- 26:45Speaker 3: They're, they probably won't have a great offense either. I mean,
- 26:48Speaker 3: they only scored 15 points. Like this is, this could
- 26:53Speaker 3: be just a average year for both teams, but that's like,
- 26:57Speaker 3: like you said, hugely overreaction Monday type thing on week
- 27:03Speaker 3: after week zero of the season, obviously a lot of
- 27:06Speaker 3: time left.
- 27:10Speaker 1: You know what? We'll talk a little bit about, uh,
- 27:14Speaker 1: How embarrassed we should be by this with Ari Temkin. Ari,
- 27:18Speaker 1: of course, covers the Pac-12, covers the Big 12. Now
- 27:22Speaker 1: I've got myself in Pac-12. Covers the Big 12 on
- 27:25Speaker 1: TuneIn Radio. Does a little work with the Cowboys as well.
- 27:28Speaker 1: A lot to discuss with Ari Temkin. It is a
- 27:31Speaker 1: Utah football game week, ladies and gentlemen, here on your
- 27:35Speaker 1: home of the Utes, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 27:41Speaker 6: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 27:44Speaker 6: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Text FOOTBALL to 33986 for your chance to win ESPN
- 27:57Speaker 1: 700 tailgate passes. Season opener is on Thursday night. We
- 28:00Speaker 1: have tailgate passes for you opening at 4 p.m. on
- 28:03Speaker 1: Guardsman Way. ESPN tailgate brought to you by R and
- 28:07Speaker 1: R barbecue sound warehouse and buzz Budweiser tailgate passes. Do
- 28:11Speaker 1: not get you into the game. So make sure you
- 28:12Speaker 1: have game tickets or you know what? Just show up
- 28:15Speaker 1: at the tailgate. We'll have TVs monitors there and you
- 28:18Speaker 1: can catch the game in the second half and do whatever. Three, three, nine, eight,
- 28:22Speaker 1: six texts football to three, three, nine, eight, six. It
- 28:26Speaker 1: is a game week Thursday night against Idaho. We'll talk
- 28:29Speaker 1: vandals here in just a little bit. Right now we
- 28:32Speaker 1: bring in Ari Temkin and, Big 12 Radio on TuneIn,
- 28:35Speaker 1: a friend of the program to talk all things Big
- 28:38Speaker 1: 12 football. Hi, Ari, how are you?
- 28:41Speaker 2: I'm great, OC.
- 28:41Speaker 1: How are you, buddy? Man, I could not be better.
- 28:44Speaker 1: College football is back. Fun slate of Week 0 games,
- 28:47Speaker 1: and now, of course, we get into it in earnest
- 28:50Speaker 1: with Week 1.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know why we have to talk about TCU.
- 28:54Speaker 2: We should instead just point and laugh at USC, should
- 28:56Speaker 2: we not?
- 28:56Speaker 1: Well, I would feel a lot better about pointing and
- 28:59Speaker 1: laughing at USC, but USC won their football game, and
- 29:03Speaker 1: TCU had an opportunity, Ari, and they squandered it with
- 29:08Speaker 1: an abysmal offensive performance over the final three quarters against
- 29:13Speaker 1: North Carolina. I thought this was kind of like a
- 29:16Speaker 1: 27-yard field goal for the That may be underestimated, Bill
- 29:23Speaker 1: Belichick's coaching ability and improvement ability from year one to
- 29:27Speaker 1: year two. But I felt like a lot of this
- 29:30Speaker 1: was more about Sonny Dyches' team underperforming than North Carolina
- 29:34Speaker 1: doing anything to be world beaters.
- 29:36Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I think you're a hundred percent right there because,
- 29:39Speaker 2: you know, while I think both things can be true,
- 29:42Speaker 2: you know, I mean, there was a valiant defensive effort
- 29:46Speaker 2: on the part of North Carolina. The Tar Heels let,
- 29:49Speaker 2: left the door open, you know, for the majority of
- 29:52Speaker 2: this game, TCU just refused to walk through it. And, and, Look,
- 29:56Speaker 2: there was a ton of extracurricular on TCU in the
- 29:59Speaker 2: lead-up to this game. There was, of course, the situation
- 30:02Speaker 2: with one of their players punching out another player and
- 30:06Speaker 2: getting charged with aggravated assault, which is a fairly heinous crime.
- 30:13Speaker 2: And then you also have the subplot to that with
- 30:19Speaker 2: the newspaper disallowing coverage of the team's Rather, TC disallowing
- 30:25Speaker 2: coverage of the team from the newspaper that most often
- 30:29Speaker 2: covers them. So then they go and play the game
- 30:32Speaker 2: and look completely undisciplined, completely not ready to play a
- 30:36Speaker 2: football game. And that's more than anything what I attribute
- 30:39Speaker 2: this loss to. I mean, Jaden Craig wasn't great. You know,
- 30:43Speaker 2: you can certainly... you know, pick through many of the
- 30:47Speaker 2: mistakes that Craig made throughout this game. And yet, despite
- 30:51Speaker 2: all of the mistakes, they still had an opportunity on
- 30:53Speaker 2: the stretch to win it. And yet Craig couldn't do
- 30:56Speaker 2: it on a fourth and two from the 10 yard line. So,
- 30:59Speaker 2: but I just, I think there were far too many mistakes.
- 31:02Speaker 2: You know, you, you have a really bad unsportsmanlike conduct
- 31:05Speaker 2: penalty for pointing out a first down by running back
- 31:08Speaker 2: Jeremy Payne when he's rolling in the first half and
- 31:10Speaker 2: you know, it might've been a bad call, but if
- 31:12Speaker 2: that's an emphasis from officials, that's on the head coach
- 31:15Speaker 2: to emphasize that to his team, that's an emphasis this year.
- 31:18Speaker 2: And I bet you across college football, every single coach
- 31:21Speaker 2: will be showing film of that to their team to
- 31:23Speaker 2: make sure that none of them are doing that to
- 31:24Speaker 2: cost them 15 yards. You also had another horrible penalty
- 31:28Speaker 2: where you had a free sack, the quarterback falls to
- 31:31Speaker 2: the ground. And one of your best pass rushers doesn't
- 31:33Speaker 2: understand what's happening there on your wallet. And Now he
- 31:36Speaker 2: gets another 15, which extends the drive when it could
- 31:39Speaker 2: have been third down, and he might have been able
- 31:40Speaker 2: to get off the field. And once again, they pan
- 31:42Speaker 2: to Sonny Dykes, and he's screaming at the officials. It
- 31:45Speaker 2: ain't the officials' fault that your team doesn't know the rules.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So it was a horribly undisciplined game. The 15 was
- 31:51Speaker 2: 103rd in penalties per game last year with seven. Well,
- 31:55Speaker 2: they surpassed that in this one with 11 penalties. And that,
- 31:58Speaker 2: to me, is the game. This was an undisciplined, poorly
- 32:03Speaker 2: coached football team, and that's what we saw.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Highlighted by that that final offsides penalty where you're just
- 32:09Speaker 1: like come on man like that.
- 32:11Speaker 2: Oh it's perfectly emblematic of the whole game and you
- 32:14Speaker 2: know i mean even i'll tell you the fourth and
- 32:16Speaker 2: two from the 10 yard line you know where some
- 32:19Speaker 2: people are wondering if if craig would have had the
- 32:22Speaker 2: corner but i just think that tentativeness that the nerves
- 32:26Speaker 2: that was pretty evident throughout the game with craig he
- 32:28Speaker 2: just didn't have a good feel for the offense and
- 32:31Speaker 2: You know, I think there were probably points within this
- 32:34Speaker 2: game where TCU could have made everybody forget about the
- 32:36Speaker 2: fact that Jordan Dwyer was not available, and yet their
- 32:39Speaker 2: two outside receivers were not available, and it just didn't happen.
- 32:42Speaker 2: And one more thing I'll say on this, because I'm
- 32:44Speaker 2: probably the minority, even before they went for it on
- 32:47Speaker 2: fourth and one earlier in the game. I'm usually very aggressive.
- 32:51Speaker 2: I like the aggressive calls. I think in that situation
- 32:55Speaker 2: where points are a premium in a low-scoring game where
- 32:58Speaker 2: you've just gotten a turnover in plus territory, you need
- 33:01Speaker 2: the points. We can bellyache about the call. The call
- 33:05Speaker 2: was dreadful, calling a dive on a fourth and one
- 33:09Speaker 2: against Bill Belichick's defense. not, I mean, just not advised,
- 33:13Speaker 2: but like, even, even if they had put the right call, which,
- 33:17Speaker 2: you know, run some motion, maybe spread, spread the formation
- 33:20Speaker 2: out and then run between the tackles. I still kick
- 33:22Speaker 2: the field goal there. I really do because I need
- 33:25Speaker 2: points in that situation. I cannot come up empty. I
- 33:28Speaker 2: think it was demoralizing to the team. And look, if
- 33:30Speaker 2: they kick the field goal there and make it, now
- 33:32Speaker 2: it's not a given they would have made it, but
- 33:33Speaker 2: if they kick the field goal there and make it,
- 33:34Speaker 2: it's 15-13. And now that final drive on the fourth
- 33:37Speaker 2: and two, you're trying to set up for the game
- 33:39Speaker 2: go-ahead field goal as opposed to needing it all at
- 33:43Speaker 2: that point of time.
- 33:44Speaker 1: How much will we be talking about this loss by
- 33:47Speaker 1: a Big 12 team to an ACC team in, you know,
- 33:52Speaker 1: Week 10.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Man, I hope not. You know, I mean, you and
- 33:56Speaker 2: I spent a lot of this offseason talking about the
- 33:58Speaker 2: importance of these games. And this was certainly one of
- 34:00Speaker 2: the quote unquote must wins. I think you've got to
- 34:03Speaker 2: flip some of the other ones now. I mean, if
- 34:06Speaker 2: Colorado can get a win over Georgia Tech in Atlanta
- 34:08Speaker 2: on Thursday night, that would be huge. Um, you know, if,
- 34:11Speaker 2: if Baylor get a win over Auburn on Saturday night,
- 34:15Speaker 2: that would be huge. So, yeah, I mean, this is
- 34:17Speaker 2: one that you needed just from a perception standpoint, you know,
- 34:21Speaker 2: it remains to be seen how good North Carolina will be.
- 34:23Speaker 2: I mean, I think Billy Edwards, their quarterback, like he
- 34:26Speaker 2: missed a lot of throws in this game too. I mean, there,
- 34:28Speaker 2: there was a point, I think after they, after TCU
- 34:32Speaker 2: missed the, uh, the, the fourth and one, uh, they
- 34:37Speaker 2: had a great drive. North Carolina had a great driver.
- 34:39Speaker 2: They took a ton of time off the clock. And
- 34:41Speaker 2: then on a third down, Billy Edwards missed a guy
- 34:44Speaker 2: wide open. And had he hit that, you'd probably go
- 34:46Speaker 2: up by a touchdown and put the game to rest. Instead,
- 34:48Speaker 2: he missed them. They missed the field goal, and that
- 34:50Speaker 2: keeps TCU in the ballgame. So I'm not sure that
- 34:55Speaker 2: time will vindicate this win in terms of what North
- 34:57Speaker 2: Carolina does. But, yeah, it's a bad loss. And I
- 35:00Speaker 2: think it says a lot more about TCU than it
- 35:02Speaker 2: probably does about the Big 12.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Ari Temkin here on the Sean O'Connell show talking all things,
- 35:08Speaker 1: big 12 and college football, because the season is back
- 35:12Speaker 1: and we're lucky as Utah fans. We don't have to
- 35:14Speaker 1: wait all the way until Saturday to get the first
- 35:17Speaker 1: glimpse at this Morgan Scali team, which of course is
- 35:21Speaker 1: a brand new era of Utah football, Idaho. We did
- 35:24Speaker 1: get to see some of Idaho. They gave up, you know,
- 35:27Speaker 1: 500 yards of offense to Cal Poly. So it's, you know,
- 35:32Speaker 1: you don't get to, Compare apples and oranges. You're not
- 35:37Speaker 1: supposed to do that. But I mean, given what we
- 35:39Speaker 1: saw from Idaho, giving up a comeback victory to Cal
- 35:42Speaker 1: Poly and the numbers that the Mustangs were able to
- 35:46Speaker 1: put up, I think this should be a nice little
- 35:49Speaker 1: ease it in type game for the Utes on Thursday night.
- 35:53Speaker 1: What did you see? Did you have a chance, I guess,
- 35:55Speaker 1: to see anything of Idaho?
- 35:58Speaker 2: No, I mean, but, you know, look, aside from what
- 36:00Speaker 2: we've seen from them last year and really start this season,
- 36:03Speaker 2: like this has been a pretty consistent program, you know,
- 36:07Speaker 2: at a lesser level. But I think to your point,
- 36:09Speaker 2: really good entry point into the season. Is it Arkansas
- 36:13Speaker 2: week two? Yes. The Arkansas game week?
- 36:15Speaker 6: Yes.
- 36:15Speaker 2: So, I mean, I think kind of the perfect. you know,
- 36:19Speaker 2: Morgan Scali debut, Kevin McGiven debut. Let's see what this
- 36:23Speaker 2: offense is capable of. And my assumption would be you
- 36:26Speaker 2: could win this game fairly easily without having to show
- 36:28Speaker 2: much on film to Arkansas within what you're doing. So
- 36:32Speaker 2: that's the hope, right? Because The less you give Arkansas
- 36:36Speaker 2: to prepare for, the better off you're going to be
- 36:37Speaker 2: because this is, for all intents and purposes, an offense
- 36:40Speaker 2: that nobody's ever seen before with McGiven. I'm excited to
- 36:45Speaker 2: see the first data points of this team. I'm expecting
- 36:49Speaker 2: a dominant performance, especially on the ground game. I'm sure
- 36:52Speaker 2: they could play it pretty basic, pretty vanilla on the
- 36:55Speaker 2: ground game and still win going away. Really good opportunity
- 36:59Speaker 2: here week one for the Utes on Thursday night.
- 37:01Speaker 1: You and I have talked a lot about what this
- 37:03Speaker 1: offensive line is going to be replacing all five starters
- 37:06Speaker 1: and just driving home exactly what they're replacing as of
- 37:11Speaker 1: final cut day yesterday, which there's still movement that happens.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Four of last year's starting five offensive linemen are either. Well,
- 37:20Speaker 1: one of them is on a practice squad and three
- 37:22Speaker 1: are on 53 man rosters. So you're not just replacing
- 37:26Speaker 1: five starters. You're replacing that level. of starters that are
- 37:30Speaker 1: all getting at least their cup of coffee in the NFL.
- 37:33Speaker 1: And of course, two of them were first round draft picks.
- 37:35Speaker 1: So they'll get much more than that. That, that highlights
- 37:39Speaker 1: to me the importance of this position room, this position
- 37:42Speaker 1: group catching up and catching up quick.
- 37:45Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 37:46Speaker 2: I mean, it's so well said OC and like, the
- 37:50Speaker 2: one thing every year that is, should be a really
- 37:52Speaker 2: good reminder for everybody, especially college football players is how
- 37:57Speaker 2: freaking hard it is to make an NFL roster. You know,
- 38:00Speaker 2: I mean, we think and watch some of these guys
- 38:02Speaker 2: play in the big 12 and think like, Oh, that
- 38:04Speaker 2: guy's for sure an NFL player. And they don't even
- 38:06Speaker 2: get a chance to sniff a 53 man roster. And
- 38:09Speaker 2: then there's other guys, you know, in the same vein,
- 38:11Speaker 2: you think the same thing of, and You know, look,
- 38:14Speaker 2: last year, Utah's offensive line, I think Texas Tech's defensive line.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I mean, you look at how many guys, three, I
- 38:23Speaker 2: think three guys from that defensive, four guys from that
- 38:25Speaker 2: defensive line off the top of my head. Certainly four
- 38:28Speaker 2: from their front seven are on NFL rosters. And of course,
- 38:31Speaker 2: David Bailey was the second overall pick. So, you know,
- 38:34Speaker 2: in comparison to other conferences, like that's fairly normal to
- 38:38Speaker 2: see a group of maybe not three on the same team,
- 38:41Speaker 2: but at least one every year, one or two guys
- 38:43Speaker 2: that are high-level draft picks. And that's the difference. Even
- 38:47Speaker 2: Texas Tech saw that when they went up against Oregon. Hey,
- 38:51Speaker 2: that's a defensive front. That is an NFL defensive front, right?
- 38:54Speaker 2: Like some teams have really good offensive lines or really
- 38:57Speaker 2: good defensive lines, but fewer teams have NFL-level offensive and
- 39:01Speaker 2: defensive lines. And so to your point, like three guys
- 39:04Speaker 2: from Utah, three guys on the defensive line from Texas Tech,
- 39:09Speaker 2: And that's not even to count the front seven. That
- 39:12Speaker 2: just shows the level of talent within this conference and
- 39:14Speaker 2: why Texas Tech was so hard to beat last year.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Because we saw in one of the few matchups that
- 39:20Speaker 2: Utah aligned up against that Texas Tech defensive front. It
- 39:23Speaker 2: was not a great day for them. um and yet
- 39:26Speaker 2: despite that um they still had one of the best
- 39:28Speaker 2: offensive lines in college football and three guys that are
- 39:31Speaker 2: pros so it just goes to show one how hard
- 39:33Speaker 2: it is and two like when we think about like
- 39:36Speaker 2: really good elite positional groups in this conference you know
- 39:39Speaker 2: how much they compare to like nfl type players and
- 39:42Speaker 2: and we saw that again with texas tech and utah.
- 39:46Speaker 1: All right, the full slate of Big 12 games this weekend,
- 39:49Speaker 1: starting with the Thursday night affair for the University of Utah,
- 39:53Speaker 1: which admittedly is not the most compelling or appealing of
- 39:57Speaker 1: the matchups involving Big 12 teams. I shouldn't say starting
- 40:01Speaker 1: with it because Colorado and UCF, I guess, both kick
- 40:04Speaker 1: off on Thursday night before Utah does. But which of
- 40:08Speaker 1: these Big 12 games in a full slate has your
- 40:12Speaker 1: attention primarily, like first and foremost, if you had to?
- 40:16Speaker 1: to put them in order.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I think the two would be Colorado,
- 40:21Speaker 2: Georgia tech. You mentioned that game in Atlanta, Georgia tech
- 40:25Speaker 2: beat Colorado last year, but they have a ton of
- 40:27Speaker 2: turnover this year, including, you know, a quarterback and a
- 40:30Speaker 2: huge difference maker for them. And with Colorado, I think
- 40:34Speaker 2: they're a major surprise team in the big 12. Like
- 40:36Speaker 2: this is a game they probably need because their schedule
- 40:40Speaker 2: is really tough within conference. So if they're going to
- 40:42Speaker 2: be a bowl team and get to six wins, this
- 40:44Speaker 2: is certainly one of them and it's going to be tough. They're,
- 40:46Speaker 2: they're going to be underdogs in the road, but I like,
- 40:49Speaker 2: I'm excited to see what Brennan Marion and that new
- 40:51Speaker 2: go-go offense has for Colorado and And then Auburn and Baylor,
- 40:55Speaker 2: you know, this was a big game last year. Auburn
- 40:59Speaker 2: ran all over Baylor, and we thought that it might
- 41:02Speaker 2: be a tell for what was to come for Auburn season.
- 41:05Speaker 2: And as it turns out, they were not very good,
- 41:07Speaker 2: fired their coach, and now Alex Golesh is in there.
- 41:10Speaker 2: So this can be a tough spot for Baylor. You know,
- 41:12Speaker 2: obviously the Bears need some wins here in order to
- 41:15Speaker 2: keep Dave Aranda's job. D.J. Lagway is, you know, certainly
- 41:18Speaker 2: from his standpoint and position to try to you know,
- 41:22Speaker 2: solidify himself as a potential draft pick here. There've been
- 41:25Speaker 2: very few, if any, I think we looked at this
- 41:28Speaker 2: number where it was, you know, quarterbacks that transfer after being,
- 41:32Speaker 2: you know, I think it was like the 24, seven sports,
- 41:35Speaker 2: like top 100 or top top 50 quarterbacks to transfer
- 41:40Speaker 2: once have a chance to get drafted, but quarterbacks to
- 41:42Speaker 2: transfer twice after that have zero chance to get drafted.
- 41:45Speaker 2: It just, in terms of the history on it, where they,
- 41:47Speaker 2: those guys just end up falling through the cracks. So
- 41:50Speaker 2: he's sort of at his last stop in terms of
- 41:52Speaker 2: is he an NFL-type prospect. So that's another one. I
- 41:55Speaker 2: think there's some under-the-radar games. I'm really excited to see
- 41:58Speaker 2: Coastal Carolina and West Virginia. That is the Bobby Petrino
- 42:02Speaker 2: family team now. Coastal Carolina has... Their head coach, Ryan Beard,
- 42:07Speaker 2: is married to Bobby Petrino's daughter. Their offensive coordinator is
- 42:10Speaker 2: Nick Petrino, Bobby's son. And then their defensive coordinator is L.D. Scott,
- 42:14Speaker 2: who is married to Bobby Petrino's other daughter. That's not
- 42:16Speaker 2: a joke. That is literally the entire family of Bobby
- 42:20Speaker 2: Petrino now at Coastal Carolina.
- 42:22Speaker 1: The craziest thing about that is having two brothers-in-law. You
- 42:28Speaker 1: hire your two brothers-in-law? Come on, man. You're asking for trouble.
- 42:32Speaker 7: I mean, it's insane.
- 42:33Speaker 2: And it's funny because I was looking it up and
- 42:35Speaker 2: I was like, oh, that's Bobby Petrito's son is the
- 42:37Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. And then you look and they're all from
- 42:39Speaker 2: Missouri State. They were all with Bobby when he was
- 42:41Speaker 2: at Missouri State. When Ryan Beard left Missouri State, you know,
- 42:46Speaker 2: it's Nick Petrito that takes over as the interim coach.
- 42:48Speaker 2: Then they all bolt for Coastal. And yeah, all of
- 42:51Speaker 2: them working together. What could possibly go wrong?
- 42:54Speaker 4: And then the.
- 42:54Speaker 2: Funniest part about the cherry on top of it is,
- 42:57Speaker 2: of course, how good of a family man we know
- 42:59Speaker 2: Bobby Petrito to be historically.
- 43:03Speaker 1: There is that. There's that as well.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Hey, we've all been caught on motorcycles, right?
- 43:11Speaker 7: Yes.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Not in that exact circumstance, but definitely. I own a motorcycle. So, yeah,
- 43:17Speaker 1: you could catch me on a motorcycle. Not doing Bobby
- 43:20Speaker 1: Petrino stuff. Ari, enjoy the weekend, man. Thank you so much,
- 43:26Speaker 1: as always, for joining us. And we'll be chatting again
- 43:29Speaker 1: on Monday with a full slate of Big 12 to digest.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Can't wait, buddy. Thursday, man. Three games. It's going to
- 43:35Speaker 2: be a lot of fun. Be well. Take care.
- 43:37Speaker 1: Ari Temkin does a great job covering this conference and
- 43:40Speaker 1: really all of college football and now also doing some
- 43:44Speaker 1: work on the Dallas Cowboys as well. So big thanks
- 43:48Speaker 1: to Ari for hopping on with us. We'll talk about
- 43:52Speaker 1: some Utes who made 53-man rosters. We'll maybe not get
- 43:56Speaker 1: to all of them in this next segment because coming
- 43:59Speaker 1: up in 12 minutes... And it might be less than that,
- 44:03Speaker 1: so we're going to break now because Morgan Scali's press
- 44:06Speaker 1: conference is on Mondays at noon. We will carry that
- 44:09Speaker 1: thing live for you right here on the Sean O'Connell Show,
- 44:12Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Another one bites.
- 44:16Speaker 4: The dust.
- 44:18Speaker 6: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 44:21Speaker 6: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 44:24Speaker 7: Another one bites the dust.
- 44:26Speaker 1: Another one. Are you ready for football season? I'm ready
- 44:33Speaker 1: for football season. We're all ready for football season. If
- 44:36Speaker 1: you love football and you enjoy great food, check both
- 44:39Speaker 1: boxes for me. Well, head over to Gracie's. Gracie's is

- 45:14Speaker 1: your NFL team in action this season at Gracie's. Located
- 45:18Speaker 1: 326 Southwest Temple in downtown Salt Lake City. You must
- 45:23Speaker 1: be at least 21 years of age to enter. Rather
- 45:28Speaker 1: than telling you every Utah player who made a 53-man roster,
- 45:33Speaker 1: I'll give you some that got waived yesterday that will
- 45:37Speaker 1: bum you out, but these guys have opportunities to jump
- 45:39Speaker 1: on practice squads, things like that. Mitch Wisnowski waived by
- 45:43Speaker 1: the Bills. Junior Tafuna waived by the Jets. Logan final
- 45:47Speaker 1: wave by the Browns. And that one is especially painful
- 45:49Speaker 1: because of course, younger brother, first round draft pick projected starter.
- 45:54Speaker 1: And you hope that they'd be able to team up
- 45:56Speaker 1: and kind of stick with each other. I wonder if
- 45:59Speaker 1: Logan's going to stay out there in Cleveland and just,
- 46:03Speaker 1: you know, try to try to hang around practice squad
- 46:07Speaker 1: and things like that, but help his brother adjust to
- 46:10Speaker 1: NFL life. We'll cover that more as the season progresses.
- 46:14Speaker 1: I want to take a break now just in case
- 46:17Speaker 1: Morgan Scali follows the shoes of his predecessor and starts
- 46:21Speaker 1: his weekly press conference a couple minutes early. So one
- 46:25Speaker 1: more break in this first hour, and then we'll start
- 46:28Speaker 1: hour number two with the official Morgan Scali weekly press conference,
- 46:33Speaker 1: week one of Utah football season, on your home of
- 46:35Speaker 1: the Utes, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 46:38Speaker 5: We don't need no education.
- 46:42Speaker 6: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 46:46Speaker 6: best insight of your youths. Let's get back to OC
- 46:49Speaker 6: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 46:56Speaker 1: No dark sarcasm in the classroom. Look, we don't know
- 47:01Speaker 1: 100% what the effects of the private equity deal are
- 47:04Speaker 1: going to be on Utah football, but it would appear
- 47:08Speaker 1: that they have classed up the joint for the weekly
- 47:11Speaker 1: press conference. Reporters up there posting pictures that they've got
- 47:16Speaker 1: like a full catering spread, like a halftime meal going on.
- 47:19Speaker 1: There was cheesecake. There was a bunch of those, you know,
- 47:24Speaker 1: the– The chafing dishes where you got the little sterno
- 47:28Speaker 1: fuel on the bottom and the lid on the thing.
- 47:32Speaker 1: That's an upgrade. Looked like there were some breadsticks involved.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Oh, see, I'm going to show you how to push
- 47:38Speaker 3: the buttons back here because I think we need one
- 47:40Speaker 3: more person up there to cover with Porter. I don't
- 47:43Speaker 3: think Porter's got it by himself. I think I need
- 47:45Speaker 3: to go up every week. Unrelated to what you said.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Witt started bringing pizza in last year, and I was
- 47:51Speaker 1: kind of like, oh, yeah, for sure he's out of
- 47:53Speaker 1: here if he's just– He's like gifting people pizza on
- 47:56Speaker 1: his way out the door. Now they've got like the full,
- 47:58Speaker 1: I mean, it seems like that's probably chef Pete making
- 48:00Speaker 1: it up.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:01Speaker 1: Let's go. Let's go. Morgan Scali's first season presser is
- 48:06Speaker 1: going to start momentarily here. Uh, Porter Larson is up
- 48:11Speaker 1: there making sure we get connected.
- 48:13Speaker 3: I also have another question asking for a friend. Would
- 48:17Speaker 3: it cost $ 800 for someone to go up there and
- 48:19Speaker 3: enjoy that at the weekly press conference?
- 48:21Speaker 1: That's, No, that's a Provo thing. Oh, okay. You could
- 48:26Speaker 1: probably charge more for chef Pete. Absolutely. And maybe you
- 48:31Speaker 1: get to ask a question of Morgan Scali at his
- 48:34Speaker 1: weekly presser. There's gotta be someone who's willing to pay
- 48:38Speaker 1: journalists would be so pissed. Oh, they started selling off questions.
- 48:43Speaker 1: That'd be awesome. Absolutely.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Tony Jones shout out would, would you remember the, the
- 48:49Speaker 3: controversy with the Jacksonville At the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tony spouted
- 48:54Speaker 3: off about that on Twitter. I couldn't even imagine what
- 48:58Speaker 3: would happen, what we'd hear from Tony Jones and others
- 49:02Speaker 3: about that.
- 49:03Speaker 1: I want to see that happen now for that very reason,
- 49:05Speaker 1: because I want to see how mad people can get
- 49:07Speaker 1: over it. Wouldn't that be cool? It'd be fun. I'm
- 49:13Speaker 1: filibustering right now, just to be fully transparent.
- 49:16Speaker 2: Porter, either.
- 49:16Speaker 1: I'm a little bit uncomfortable with the fact that it
- 49:19Speaker 1: is now 11 59 50 and we are not all
- 49:23Speaker 1: the way dialed in and listening to Morgan Scali. It's
- 49:27Speaker 1: freaking me out a little bit. Idaho comes into Rice
- 49:31Speaker 1: Eccles Stadium on Thursday night. This is going to be
- 49:34Speaker 1: I think exactly the warm-up game that Utah needs for
- 49:38Speaker 1: the first you know First crack under a fully realized,
- 49:42Speaker 1: fully staffed up, fully recruited, like a fully actualized Morgan
- 49:47Speaker 1: Scali coached football season. He did a great job in
- 49:51Speaker 1: the bowl game. They were still cobbling some things together
- 49:53Speaker 1: and figuring some things out. Obviously, you had guys from
- 49:56Speaker 1: last year's roster. This is now Morgan's team, officially. It's
- 50:01Speaker 1: his first team. It's his first staff. It's his own guys.
- 50:07Speaker 1: And you've got a situation where You get an Idaho
- 50:12Speaker 1: team who's coming on a short week. They played Friday night.
- 50:17Speaker 1: They're back in action Thursday night. They played against Cal Poly,
- 50:20Speaker 1: gave up a late touchdown. That allowed Cal Poly to
- 50:23Speaker 1: pull off the win there. 38-34 was the final. They
- 50:27Speaker 1: also gave up. I can hear you. Oh, okay. James
- 50:36Speaker 1: is connecting with Porter up there at the facility right now. Okay,
- 50:52Speaker 1: so Morgan is not exactly like his predecessor, who always,
- 50:57Speaker 1: they would schedule the Monday presser for 11, and then
- 51:01Speaker 1: it was always on air at 11 or at 1057
- 51:05Speaker 1: or something like that? Yeah, and it was Bill.
- 51:09Speaker 3: Who was in this time slot forever going, yeah, always
- 51:12Speaker 3: reminding me, hey, remember we're going to start the show
- 51:14Speaker 3: a few minutes early.
- 51:15Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 51:16Speaker 3: And then I had to, hey, remember we're starting a
- 51:18Speaker 3: few minutes early because it's wit. And now, I don't know,
- 51:21Speaker 3: maybe we can go five minutes later with Morgan.
- 51:25Speaker 1: Can I tell you, this is actually a very significant improvement.
- 51:31Speaker 1: I never loved that you would be rushing on to
- 51:34Speaker 1: the show. We'd like crack the mic and be like, oh, okay,
- 51:37Speaker 1: Kyle Whittingham's at the podium now. Morgan Scali, weekly presser now.
- 51:45Speaker 7: Welcome.
- 51:45Speaker 9: Excited for this home opener, get this thing going. We've
- 51:50Speaker 9: been hitting each other for some time now. Fall camp
- 51:54Speaker 9: went really well. Established a two deep at the majority
- 51:59Speaker 9: of our position groups with some injuries still lingering a
- 52:04Speaker 9: little bit, so we'll see come game day, nothing that's
- 52:07Speaker 9: going to keep guys out of the mix for the
- 52:10Speaker 9: most part, so really healthy fall camp, pleased with the
- 52:15Speaker 9: coaches' energy, the players' energy, getting a leadership council and
- 52:20Speaker 9: captains in place that really kind of determine where things
- 52:25Speaker 9: go from here on out.
- 52:26Speaker 4: But excited. I know our fans are excited.
- 52:29Speaker 9: I think it's been, what, 95 straight sellouts, and we've
- 52:34Speaker 9: got an unbelievable fan base, so Home opener versus Idaho.
- 52:40Speaker 4: We were able to get.
- 52:41Speaker 9: A sneak peek of them last week and nothing but
- 52:46Speaker 9: respect for Coach Ford and that group. Got an offense,
- 52:50Speaker 9: a dynamic quarterback that was very efficient both throwing and
- 52:55Speaker 9: when you add in the running element that causes some
- 52:59Speaker 9: issues for defense.
- 53:00Speaker 4: Really good wide receivers. Tight ends that are athletic.
- 53:03Speaker 9: A seasoned offensive line on the defensive side of the ball,
- 53:07Speaker 9: very twitchy up front, active. You can kind of tell
- 53:10Speaker 9: how a team's coached by how they run to the ball.
- 53:12Speaker 9: These guys run to the ball. So with that said,
- 53:15Speaker 9: I'll open it up for questions.
- 53:18Speaker 4: Fire away, Steve.
- 53:19Speaker 1: Oh, you know what?
- 53:19Speaker 6: No.
- 53:20Speaker 4: Justin gets the first. Justin gets the first.
- 53:24Speaker 10: And I'm reading Justin's question.
- 53:25Speaker 7: Okay.
- 53:26Speaker 11: So it says, with this being your second game as
- 53:28Speaker 11: Utah's head coach, with fourth down and six to go,
- 53:30Speaker 11: are you more likely to go analytical or follow your instinct?
- 53:34Speaker 9: You are always stirring the pot, dude.
- 53:39Speaker 4: Yeah, kind of a mix.
- 53:41Speaker 9: You take everything into account, how practice went, the people
- 53:46Speaker 9: that do the analytics, I mean, just going over those
- 53:47Speaker 9: numbers and how they do it, I mean, really, really smart. But,
- 53:51Speaker 9: you know, there's also a feel for the game, and
- 53:53Speaker 9: I'll take everything into account, just not your opinion.
- 53:58Speaker 4: Okay, all right.
- 54:01Speaker 9: Yes.
- 54:03Speaker 5: You coached.
- 54:03Speaker 8: A lot of Utah season openers, but this is obviously
- 54:06Speaker 8: the first one as head coach. Do you anticipate when
- 54:09Speaker 8: you walk out onto the field to feel different, and
- 54:11Speaker 8: are you planning on crying?
- 54:13Speaker 7: No.
- 54:14Speaker 4: No.
- 54:15Speaker 9: Yeah, I don't plan on it being too much different,
- 54:19Speaker 9: and no, I don't plan on crying.
- 54:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 54:22Speaker 9: Unless something horrible happens. We don't need that.
- 54:26Speaker 4: Knock on wood.
- 54:28Speaker 1: You already have your first win under your belt as
- 54:29Speaker 1: head coach, but what would your first.
- 54:30Speaker 7: Win at home mean?
- 54:33Speaker 4: A win. you know, I'm excited for our players.
- 54:36Speaker 9: It's all about them and the way, the preparation that
- 54:39Speaker 9: they've put in, buying into our culture and our way
- 54:42Speaker 9: of doing things. We've got, like I said, a really
- 54:45Speaker 9: good group of leaders that, you know, they hold each
- 54:51Speaker 9: other accountable, which is an awesome thing to see. It's
- 54:54Speaker 9: not always easy to hold each other accountable and to
- 54:59Speaker 9: bring others along. A lot of people shy away from that,
- 55:01Speaker 9: but we've got some good ones. So, These players are
- 55:04Speaker 9: ready and cannot wait for them to let it loose.
- 55:09Speaker 10: Morgan, you've waited a long time to become the head
- 55:12Speaker 10: coach of the University of Utah. What has it been
- 55:15Speaker 10: like learning from.
- 55:17Speaker 4: Being a small.
- 55:32Speaker 1: I think we lost connection with the facility up there
- 55:35Speaker 1: as Morgan, our guy Justin, coming in with just a
- 55:42Speaker 1: burner on the first question. Oh, that's crazy that the
- 55:50Speaker 1: first question of his season was a shot across the
- 55:53Speaker 1: bow of the analytics heavy approach from his predecessor. Really,
- 56:00Speaker 1: really surprising there. Anyway, Morgan addressing the media. And we
- 56:06Speaker 1: got another tweet, by the way, about the media meal.
- 56:10Speaker 1: It is indeed from the facility provided by Chef Pete
- 56:14Speaker 1: and company. So good to see our fellow media members
- 56:18Speaker 1: getting taken care of. And obviously here on the Home
- 56:20Speaker 1: of the Utes, we're going to try to reconnect you
- 56:22Speaker 1: to the Morgan Scali Press Conference. He gave some compliments
- 56:27Speaker 1: to Idaho that You know, your coach is taking the
- 56:31Speaker 1: high road there. This is an Idaho team that showed
- 56:35Speaker 1: some real vulnerabilities in their week one loss, or excuse me,
- 56:39Speaker 1: their week zero loss to Cal Poly. And now we're
- 56:43Speaker 1: back with Morgan.
- 56:44Speaker 9: He's really good right now. He was one that went
- 56:46Speaker 9: down a little bit earlier in fall camp. You know,
- 56:50Speaker 9: Jai Moa's been consistent all throughout. And, you know, I
- 56:55Speaker 9: like where we're headed. We just need to get everyone
- 56:57Speaker 9: healthy and ready.
- 57:00Speaker 8: Morgan, with the offensive line obviously replacing all five guys,
- 57:02Speaker 8: what is the sign of success in this first game,
- 57:06Speaker 8: knowing that it takes time to build that.
- 57:07Speaker 10: Communication, especially in real game reps?
- 57:11Speaker 9: Just no intolerable penalties. Just want to play clean. Want
- 57:16Speaker 9: to play clean and you're not going to be perfect,
- 57:19Speaker 9: but aggressive.
- 57:22Speaker 4: We want to be physical. We don't want to be soft.
- 57:25Speaker 9: And For me, success is running the ball well and
- 57:32Speaker 9: playing clean.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Morgan, when you are in.
- 57:35Speaker 11: A game like this, obviously installing the new offense, you
- 57:38Speaker 11: have all these new pieces on the offense. What is
- 57:40Speaker 11: the line between not having a vanilla play calling game
- 57:44Speaker 11: and having one that doesn't give away everything that's in
- 57:47Speaker 11: your guys' Rolodex for this season?
- 57:49Speaker 9: I think Kevin's done a nice job of having enough
- 57:55Speaker 9: throughout spring and fall that you're always going to see
- 58:00Speaker 9: something new. With this offense and the amount of threats
- 58:04Speaker 9: that we have, playmakers that we have, you know, you
- 58:09Speaker 9: may see something new every single week in terms of
- 58:12Speaker 9: not just play selection but personnel, right? And that's what
- 58:17Speaker 9: I think makes this offense difficult to defend is that, okay,
- 58:23Speaker 9: they're sitting there in a four-wide group. They're sitting there
- 58:27Speaker 9: in a 12 personnel, and then all of a sudden
- 58:30Speaker 9: it's 13 personnel with your two rhino tight ends. There's
- 58:34Speaker 9: something for every defense to be worried about. Not too
- 58:40Speaker 9: worried about being vanilla.
- 58:43Speaker 8: Morgan, you've been on the sidelines so many times as
- 58:45Speaker 8: defensive coordinator.
- 58:46Speaker 1: What do you think the biggest adjustment is going to
- 58:47Speaker 1: be when the game starts as head coach? Are you
- 58:52Speaker 1: anticipating anything that might take you by surprise?
- 58:56Speaker 4: Just for me to shut up. Just to turn off
- 58:58Speaker 4: the mic, I guess.
- 59:00Speaker 9: Let Coach Swan do his deal.
- 59:05Speaker 4: I'm excited for him.
- 59:06Speaker 9: That's another aspect of this that Colton Swan's worked his
- 59:10Speaker 9: tail off to be in this position. They've done a
- 59:14Speaker 9: great job in fall camp of having these guys fly around.
- 59:17Speaker 9: He's pretty dialed in, so I'm excited to see him perform.
- 59:21Speaker 12: The biggest difference from last year to now going into
- 59:23Speaker 12: this season is?
- 59:27Speaker 4: Well, health being the number one thing.
- 59:28Speaker 9: I think he's also got a quarterback coach in Gunderson
- 59:33Speaker 9: that has really.
- 59:34Speaker 4: Helped with progression.
- 59:36Speaker 9: And I think for me, the biggest difference has been
- 59:41Speaker 9: in his leadership style.
- 59:43Speaker 4: And that is probably the most.
- 59:46Speaker 9: Important in a position where everyone's looking at you You know,
- 59:50Speaker 9: how are you going to respond to adversity?
- 59:52Speaker 4: How do you attack a stretch, a warm-up? Everything that
- 59:56Speaker 4: you do, everyone's watching.
- 59:58Speaker 9: And so are you that guy that's owning his 20
- 1:00:01Speaker 9: square feet that's being compelling by the way you live
- 1:00:03Speaker 9: your life, or are you a guy that is giving
- 1:00:06Speaker 9: everyone else an excuse to slack off?
- 1:00:08Speaker 4: And he's been fantastic.
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: He put up huge numbers last year, but a lot
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: of times he was injured or banged up.
- 1:00:14Speaker 10: What have you seen from him this fall as a
- 1:00:16Speaker 10: healthy quarterback and what are you kind of expecting from.
- 1:00:18Speaker 12: Him on the field?
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: Yeah, you also want to be careful with that because
- 1:00:22Speaker 9: if he thinks he's Superman sometimes, that's where the injury
- 1:00:25Speaker 9: bug can get you. But I've been very pleased with
- 1:00:28Speaker 9: his decision-making, when to check it down, when to stay alive,
- 1:00:34Speaker 9: when to take off and run. He's doing a much
- 1:00:37Speaker 9: better job of understanding his role as keeping himself healthy
- 1:00:41Speaker 9: as well.
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: You mentioned the 2D.
- 1:00:44Speaker 12: Are you setting all those, especially your offensive line, your
- 1:00:47Speaker 12: five starters?
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: There's going to be some rotators game one. Yeah, there
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: really is. Because of the injuries and because we haven't
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: been able to solidify that. So you'll see some rotation
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: going on.
- 1:00:56Speaker 9: Both of the defensive lines are more normal because if
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: you get into longer drives, guys just get winded. But
- 1:01:02Speaker 9: on the offensive side of the ball, you're going to
- 1:01:05Speaker 9: probably see some rotators, primarily interiorly.
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: Morgan, what's a good number.
- 1:01:10Speaker 6: Of touches for Rayshon Parker, and how would you split
- 1:01:14Speaker 6: them up, rushing and possibly receiving?
- 1:01:17Speaker 9: It depends on how the game's going. You never know
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: in openers, right? You see mistakes being made. So that's
- 1:01:26Speaker 9: why I think playing clean, not having turnovers, not having
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: those penalties that get you behind the sticks early in
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: a drive, So really, it's just going to depend on
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: the flow of the game. This is a revenge game, brother. 1993,
- 1:01:40Speaker 9: we lost to the Vandals. This is a revenge game.
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: We're the only two who remember why.
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:01:47Speaker 10: Marty, you've seen a lot of teams in multiple Pac-12 championships.
- 1:01:52Speaker 10: You were part of a 2014 that's identity was strong quarterback,
- 1:01:56Speaker 10: playing strong defense. Now that you've had nine months, or
- 1:01:59Speaker 10: maybe eight months still, to kind of see what this
- 1:02:02Speaker 10: team's identity is, what do you feel like their biggest
- 1:02:04Speaker 10: strengths are so far?
- 1:02:07Speaker 9: The strength of the offense is in the number of
- 1:02:12Speaker 9: positions that can be threats. I'm so impressed with the
- 1:02:21Speaker 9: job that Jordan Gross has done with his front, and that.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: Is hopefully going to show itself on Thursday.
- 1:02:31Speaker 9: So I would say just the amount of threats that
- 1:02:33Speaker 9: we have on the offensive side of the ball and
- 1:02:35Speaker 9: then on the defensive side of the ball. There's been,
- 1:02:39Speaker 9: I think, a chip on everyone's shoulder about the run game,
- 1:02:43Speaker 9: how we ended it last year. So it's been a
- 1:02:48Speaker 9: pretty physical spring and fall camp for us, which is
- 1:02:52Speaker 9: why I think you see some of the injuries. But Thankfully,
- 1:02:57Speaker 9: nothing season-ending. But you need that. You need the scarring.
- 1:03:02Speaker 9: You need to know you can do it when it matters.
- 1:03:06Speaker 9: So I'm excited to watch these guys against the run.
- 1:03:09Speaker 10: With Joshua Woods at Budassism, the Idaho quarterback, how do
- 1:03:12Speaker 10: the testers for your defensive line early in the year,
- 1:03:14Speaker 10: since obviously they don't get to hit.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Devin and Bird in practice?
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: Really good, because they're not just a team where he
- 1:03:21Speaker 9: makes his yards scrambling.
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: They all have some designed runs for him.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: So.
- 1:03:25Speaker 9: Much like we've done with Devin. The design runs are
- 1:03:29Speaker 9: really the stuff that you've got to pay attention to. Situationally,
- 1:03:32Speaker 9: when is that going to happen?
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: It does.
- 1:03:35Speaker 9: When you have a quarterback that is big enough, physical
- 1:03:38Speaker 9: enough to be a factor in the run game, you
- 1:03:42Speaker 9: have to have a plan for it.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Coming and preparing for this game, what has been your
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: overall message to the guys this entire fall camp, but
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: especially these next few days?
- 1:03:53Speaker 10: What's going to be your message to the guys?
- 1:03:55Speaker 9: Just focus on us, on behaving the way we're supposed
- 1:03:58Speaker 9: to behave, that culture that we talk about. And every
- 1:04:02Speaker 9: position group has a set of behaviors that you're looking
- 1:04:06Speaker 9: for that makes them elite in that position. And if
- 1:04:09Speaker 9: everyone can just really focus on becoming the best they
- 1:04:14Speaker 9: can be at those behaviors, the results should speak for themselves.
- 1:04:17Speaker 9: So yeah, just focus on us, our culture, and it
- 1:04:21Speaker 9: doesn't matter who we're playing.
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Martin, are you comfortable right now with the support you're
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: receiving from the university and the infrastructure around you and
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: who you're reporting to?
- 1:04:31Speaker 10: Is all that in place for you right now?
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: Oh, wow.
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: That came out of left field.
- 1:04:34Speaker 9: Yes, I'm very blessed with a president that's a Utah
- 1:04:39Speaker 9: guy and an AD that is fully supportive.
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: We have a really good thing going on right now.
- 1:04:47Speaker 9: Our focus is on these players and on putting the
- 1:04:50Speaker 9: best product out there. We have an unbelievable fan base,
- 1:04:53Speaker 9: and it's a great time to be a Ute, brother.
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: There's been some restructuring elsewhere. I don't know if you've
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: been following the news cycle.
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: Gotcha. I gotcha. Yeah, very, very happy with what we've got.
- 1:05:03Speaker 8: Morgan, it seems like there's a ton of versatility all
- 1:05:06Speaker 8: around your roster. How much does that afford you as
- 1:05:08Speaker 8: a head coach, knowing obviously it has to live out
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: on the field, but how much does that afford you,
- 1:05:12Speaker 8: and how do you stack that up to maybe prior
- 1:05:15Speaker 8: teams that you've been a part of with this team?
- 1:05:19Speaker 9: I don't know that I've seen the depth on the
- 1:05:22Speaker 9: offensive side of the ball that we have right now.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: What you can't do is try and get too cute
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: with it.
- 1:05:31Speaker 9: You really have to hone in on who are the
- 1:05:35Speaker 9: top playmakers and who are going to be role players.
- 1:05:40Speaker 9: You do too much and you never get good at
- 1:05:43Speaker 9: one thing. So The trick is being able to do
- 1:05:47Speaker 9: the same thing in different personnel groups, the same thing
- 1:05:51Speaker 9: with maybe masking it with a shift or a motion,
- 1:05:55Speaker 9: and that's.
- 1:05:57Speaker 4: The beauty of what we have in this offense. Bless you,
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: by the way. Don't hold that in, dude. If they're
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: not paying rent, you've got to get them out.
- 1:06:06Speaker 10: You should wear a mask.
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: Next time.
- 1:06:13Speaker 7: How important is.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: It in a game like this against an FCS opponent
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: to try to get as many guys game action?
- 1:06:20Speaker 9: I never think about that. I never think about that.
- 1:06:24Speaker 9: Our whole goal is to play the best we can.
- 1:06:26Speaker 9: Now as the game progresses and we feel like but
- 1:06:32Speaker 9: you go into it with that mindset and be prepared
- 1:06:35Speaker 9: to be on ESPN for all the wrong reasons.
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: Every game is our Super Bowl. You got 12 of them.
- 1:06:42Speaker 9: Don't let No regrets with any of them. You've got
- 1:06:47Speaker 9: to go in prepared to win every single one of
- 1:06:50Speaker 9: them the right way.
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: It's such a long build-up to get into these dozen games.
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: Fall, spring, everything else.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: Do you feel it when you get to game week?
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: A sense from the players and your staff and everybody else?
- 1:07:07Speaker 9: Yeah, definitely a sense of excitement. There's also a sense
- 1:07:10Speaker 9: of exhaustion, just being done hitting each other. Like, let's go,
- 1:07:14Speaker 9: let's Let's get into this thing, and I think we're
- 1:07:16Speaker 9: in a good, healthy mix of that right now.
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: We just want to get out there and play. Hey, thanks, everybody.
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: Enjoy the rest of the food.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: The food mentioned by Morgan. Is that our guy Spence
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: Check that's trying to stir the pot up there? Asking
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: about an infrastructure question and a, are you happy with
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: your athletic director question?
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: It was hard to hear the questions. I don't know
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: if they've passed the mic around like they've done in
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: years past, or if they were just.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: You know, just shouting, shouting him out. So it's hard
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: to tell if it was Spence, but if it was
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: shout out, it was him. It was him on the,
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: the followup statement. I don't of the, There's been some
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: restructuring elsewhere. I don't know if you've heard that was spent.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: I don't know if the question was spent. We're going
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: to have to do a little, a little investigation as
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: we listen that to that back that.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: During crosstalk, maybe we'll grill Spence on his grilling of Morgan. Look,
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: this is, it's a game against Idaho guys.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: All right. So what you're getting right there is you're
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: getting your head coach saying the right things, not, not
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: letting any cracks show in the armor and not letting
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: anybody get out over their skis, because this is an
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: Idaho team that already has a game of experience under
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: their belt. This is an Idaho team that has all
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: the rust kind of shaken off from the off season.
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: They have a big body quarterback who can run the
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: ball a little bit. They have experienced coaches. They do have,
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: you know, scholarship players. It should not be close against
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: the university of Utah, but Josh would their quarterback last year.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: He completed 18 passes, averaging 14 and a half yards
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: per completion. That is a big, big number. Now, Cal
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: Poly defensively should not be anywhere in the same realm
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: as Utah is defensively. But what it tells you is
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: that this young guy, number three, has some awareness of
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: what he's seeing, especially in the passing game. He's 6'3,
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: he's 215 pounds. Like you heard Morgan saying, he's got
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: some versatility and some athleticism. He also carried the ball
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: 11 times for 42 yards in this game. And teams
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: like Idaho... teams like Utah State that's still coming on
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: the schedule, teams like Arkansas for that matter, but especially
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: game one and game three, you just can't let them
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: get any sort of sense that they belong. Any sort
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: of sense that they can make some good things happen
- 1:10:06Speaker 1: for themselves. We've talked about this over the years so
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: many times that letting a team hang around when they
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: have no business hanging around can get dangerous because you
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: start to get frustrated. Body language becomes an issue. Communication
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: between your players as that frustration mounts becomes an issue.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: Your coaches, as much as they try to stay kind
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: of above it all, they're still human beings. So they
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: start to get frustrated and start to, to break down
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: their own communication with the players. I should say, break
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: down in their own communication with the players and It's
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: a tough thing. If you let Idaho hang around, I
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: don't think that Utah will. I think that the other
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: thing you heard Morgan referencing there, and he was answering
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: questions about this is a team that is sick of
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: hitting each other. This is a team that is sick
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: of being asked all of these questions about, Hey, you're
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: replacing all five offensive linemen. Are you guys going to
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: be able to get any push? Is Devin Dampier going
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: to be protected at all? You've got a bunch of
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: guys on this roster who are looking to make their
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: name at the power level for the first time. If
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: you're Kyrie Shoals, if you are Braden Pagan, if you're
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: any of these individuals that did it at Utah state
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: or did it at San Jose state or did it
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: at North Texas, in the case of like an Ethan day,
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: you had maybe three television games, like actually on ESPN,
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: people are going to watch them. Television games. When you're
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: at those places, you probably never played in front of
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: a truly sold out stadium. And if you did, it
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: was a smaller capacity than what you're going to be
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: playing at in front of Rice Eccles. And my hope
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: is Rice Eccles is a real sellout on Thursday night.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: We know it's going to be a reported sellout. We
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: know that it is a on the books sellout. But
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: we don't know if it's going to be every butt
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: in every seat kind of a sellout. I actually anticipate
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: that maybe it won't be. But you need to start
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: this thing off right. And there's ways, especially at the
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: beginning of the season, that you can win a game
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: and still lose the PR battle. You can lose the
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: enthusiasm of a fan base. You can lose the confidence
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: of the group of guys that are most important, either
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: in your coaching staff or in the locker room with
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: the players. You have to be careful. Or maybe I
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: said that wrong. Maybe you have to make sure you're
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: not careful. You got to go out there and play football.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: And this Morgan Scali coach team, I think that there's
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: going to be growing pains. There's going to be better
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: or worse type moments for him in his first year
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: as the head coach full time. But I don't think
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: that's going to be one of them. I don't think
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: that the problems that some guys have with hesitation, the
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: problem that some guys have with people not 100% knowing
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: their place in the program. I think that those are
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: the growing pains that most programs have to experience that
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Utah football will not with Morgan Scali at the helm,
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: if that makes sense. I think that his communication style
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: and his leadership as a personality insulate you from some
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: of those same risks that other teams have to deal with.
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: There are not a lot of guys in this locker
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: room who are questioning whether or not, hey, am I
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: ever going to make it on the field? Am I
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: ever going to get a fair look? Does my coaching
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: staff even give a bleep that I'm on this team?
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: There's going to be other issues, not those ones. And
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: you'll see that, I think, with Ido. He was also asked,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: whether or not he is thinking about or worries about
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: getting guys on the field, how many guys you want
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: to get reps. And, uh, he, he cautioned almost himself
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: in the, if you worry about that, you're worrying about
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: the wrong thing and you're going to be, you're going
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: to end up on ESPN for all the wrong reasons
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: he knows. And he's making sure his players know that
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: you don't put the cart before the horse. You don't
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: overlook even the Idaho vandals. who lost 38-34 to the
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Cal Poly Mustangs in Big Sky play last Friday, who
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: gave up almost 500 yards of offense, over 500 yards
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: of offense, excuse me, to Cal Poly. If you don't
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: respect the opponent that you're playing against, you allow that
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: opponent to sneak up on you, you are subconsciously going
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: to play worse far below your actual level. And you're
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: going to waste the reps. This should be a game
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: where your starters have to play into the middle of
- 1:15:09Speaker 1: the third quarter. And they only have to play into
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: the middle of the third quarter because the coaches want
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: to see them get that amount of rep together. After that,
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: you should be playing backups pretty extensively, but the shoulda
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: coulda woulda thing in college football is, has been written
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: over and over and over again. And it's nice to
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: see that Morgan Scali is, well, he's been around long
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: enough to know that you just have to keep your
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: eye on the ball here. There are teams that lost
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: the goodwill of their fan base, even in wins this
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: past weekend. How many explosive run plays do you think
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: USC had? The number 14 ranked USC Trojans, by the way, James,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: how many explosive run plays do you think USC had
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: against San Jose state in their week one, wake zero
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: game where they won 42 to 26. And it was never,
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: it was never really in doubt. I mean, a valiant effort,
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: I suppose for San Jose state, but they scored 23
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: points against third string players in the fourth quarter USC
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: had Blanked San Jose State in the first half. It
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: was 28-0 going into the half. The Spartans scored three
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: points in the third quarter, and then they put up
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: the rest of their points in the fourth quarter, mounting
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: a fruitless comeback against defensive backups. How many explosive run
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: plays did USC have in their game against San Jose State?
- 1:16:45Speaker 5: Two?
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: They had one.
- 1:16:50Speaker 3: And one, I mean, based on the tone of your voice,
- 1:16:53Speaker 3: I was like, it's got to be really low. One
- 1:16:56Speaker 3: explosive run play. And weren't we talking about this time
- 1:17:00Speaker 3: last year? Weren't we talking about Utah's win over UCLA?
- 1:17:04Speaker 3: The only thing that you can quibble with is they
- 1:17:07Speaker 3: did not have any explosive plays, right? In that 40-something
- 1:17:12Speaker 3: to 10 or whatever it was, blowout of UCLA.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: So that stuff happens, right?
- 1:17:18Speaker 3: You would rather it not happen if you're USC against
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: a group of six team, San Jose state for sure.
- 1:17:27Speaker 1: Oh, excuse me. I was, uh, they had to the,
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: I nailed it. I knew it. The definition of an
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: explosive run play, uh, is different than the definition of
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: an explosive pass play. It's supposed to run plays 10
- 1:17:43Speaker 1: yards or more. Oh, is it really? Yeah. That's a
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: lot lower passes.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: 20. Yes. Yeah.
- 1:17:48Speaker 3: I guess it's easier to get more yardage from pass
- 1:17:52Speaker 3: than run.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: They gave up more explosive run plays to a San
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: Jose state rushing team that only finished with 102 yards
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: on the ground than they had. So not only were
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: there like 19 people in the stands when USC took
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: on San Jose state, And it's funny to see the
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: LA sports fans try to defend that and try to
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: apologize for that and rage at all of us folks
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: in Utah who are like, couldn't be us. Can't imagine.
- 1:18:20Speaker 1: Did you have schools not even in yet? So like, well,
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: it was hot. We're in a heat wave. You guys,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: we have a beach too. So people would rather go there. Okay.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: I've never heard you use that voice before.
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: That was incredible. If you ever lived in LA, dude,
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: it's hard to get places. I'm not getting in the
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: car for an hour to go watch Saturday state, bro.
- 1:18:44Speaker 3: By the way, underrated part of this matchup. It was
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: a Troy versus Spartan. Spartans versus Trojans. Shout out to
- 1:18:51Speaker 3: the Odyssey and Troy.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: USC did the thing that you don't want to see
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Utah do. And look, it's disrespectful to have this stance
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: about San Jose state because San Jose state is a
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: division one football team. They're they're not on the same
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: level as USC. No one expects them to be on
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: the same level as USC, but like they got a
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: bunch of scholarship players. They might have a guy with
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: an IL deal or two, right? If you don't demolish them,
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: embarrass them, Molly, whop them in a way that sends
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: this part. And you kind of did, but still you
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: didn't do it convincingly enough, explosively enough, impressively enough to,
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: to meet the expectation of what really more your media
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: than your fan base. Because I don't know if there
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: is a USC Trojan fan base, not a real one,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: not a hardcore one. When you're talking about a San
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: Jose state game, there is fair weather as it gets in.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: You understand why multiple national championships, you got world series
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: baseball teams in your home market. You got the number
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: one Most talked about NFL team in your market right now.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: So, and you know, when the Lakers are good, which
- 1:20:14Speaker 3: is seldom right now, you got the Lakers too.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: So this, this is the old, this is the, the
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: USC thing that happened against San Jose state is my concern.
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: If that's the right word for it for Utah against
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: Idaho on Thursday night, I don't think Idaho's got a
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: chance against Utah. Morgan can't say that when Devin Dampier
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: joins us this week, he can't say that. Are we
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: doing Colton Swan for coordinator's corner? We are doing Colton.
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: So I almost forgot about that coordinator's corner starting this week.
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: And that's going to typically be one o'clock on Fridays,
- 1:20:48Speaker 3: but because it's a Thursday or a Thursday game, that's
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: going to be at one on Wednesday with the new
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: defensive coordinator, your buddy Colton Swan.
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: Okay. So Colton Swan is not going to say these
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: guys don't have a chance against us. They can't say
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: that they can't think that way. I can because What
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: I say and do has zero bearing on whether or
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: not Utah wins a football game. I don't think Idaho's
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: got a chance in hell. What I do think, though,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: is that there is a risk that Utah, without looking hyper-dominant,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: without coming out, especially with the run game that we
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: think is going to be so potent... without coming out
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: and rolling over Idaho and embarrassing Idaho, I think that
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: the reaction for Utah fans and for the Utah media,
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: because I'm a member of them, is going to be like, well,
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: wait a second. Why didn't they look better than this? That's,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: I think, the risk here for Utah. And we'll define
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: as the week goes on what success really looks like.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: For players and coaches, it's just a victory. It's just
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: a win. For everyone who's going to be judging from afar,
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: you want a 40-point win. You want a five-touchdown win.
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: That's what you want. I don't know how realistic it is.
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: It's what I want. I don't know how realistic it is.
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: I want penalty-free football. Morgan Scali talked about that in
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: the press conference, which you can find at ESPN700Sports. com and
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: on the ESPN 700 app. We'll be talking about it.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: as the show progresses throughout the week, because it is
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: a game week here on your home of the Utes.
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: Daily dump is coming up next. Zach Moss joins us
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: at one o'clock. Make sure you stick with us. ESPN,
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: 700 92, one FM.
- 1:22:43Speaker 7: Feeling out of the loop?
- 1:22:44Speaker 6: Let's catch up on today's biggest headlines in the Daily
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: News Dump, where we flush out the biggest stories of
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: the day on the Sean O'Connell Show and Utah's number
- 1:22:53Speaker 6: one sports talk.
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:22:56Speaker 6: Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling.
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: Just look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: A plethora of stories to get to here in the
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: Daily Dump. We might have to do two segments of
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: it because there's so much to talk about. Some of
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: it has been in James' weekly updates, or daily updates,
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: I should say. Some of it is stuff you have
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: not yet heard about. I'm going to start with one
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: that's just supremely positive and a feel-good story. Because I'm
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: malcontent and I complain sometimes too much. This is amazing.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: Have you seen... You probably have seen this. Here's a
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: gift idea for your lovely wife. Does she wear hats,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: by the way? No, Bryn's not a hat person. Not
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: a hat person? Okay, maybe it won't be perfect. Maybe
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: they'll do a t-shirt version of this. Do you know
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: what the Billustration hat is? Have you heard about this?
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: I have not. Okay, so your guy Joshie, Josh Allen. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: He and his wife have decided. I love that you
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: call him Joshy now. He and his wife have decided
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: that their main charitable thing is this children's hospital in Buffalo,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: New York. I forget what it's called. Hold on. It's
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: the Golisano Children's Hospital of Buffalo. He has spent a
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: lot of his own personal time. He has donated a
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: lot of his own money. to this hospital. And it's,
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: you know, there's a really strong bond and relationship with
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: Josh Allen and the children here. It's, it's the Buffalo
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: New York version of primary children's hospital. They do wonderful
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: life-saving work for kids with life-threatening illnesses. And it's lovely
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: to see an NFL player, not only like write the check,
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: but he spends time. He goes and sees the kids.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: He brings them to games, things like that. Well, he
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: is now a, partnered with New Era, the hat company,
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: to make eight hats available on the New Era website
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: and at stores and wherever they have Bill's merchandise, like
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: at Highmark Stadium. The Patricia Allen Fund at Golisano Children's
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: Hospital of Buffalo is where this money is filtered through.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: And these hats are awesome. What they did is they
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: had kids who were patients at the hospital do drawings,
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: do illustrations. And those are now embroidered on these hats.
- 1:25:26Speaker 1: And some of them are Bill's colors. Other ones are
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: not Bill's colors. And the best part is, James, did
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: you pull it up? I did. These are fantastic. We
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: all know what the Buffalo Bill's logo looks like, right?
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: It's that sort of side profile of a bison, of
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: a buffalo, with the coming off the horn like the
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: stripe that goes right through the middle of the buffalo. Yeah,
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: the red stripe. The red stripe. It's kind of a
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: cool logo, right?
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Clearly they had some kid draw their interpretation, their version
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: of the, of the, the Buffalo logo. And that is
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: the logo on these hats. And it looks exactly like
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: a three-year-old or a four-year-old or a five-year-old drawing the
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: Buffalo bills logo. It's like a little bit too chubby.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: The proportions are a little bit wrong. It's adorable. It's awesome.
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: I can't stand the bills, but I would consider buying
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: one of these hats because a How adorable. B, proceeds
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: go to benefit the children's hospital.
- 1:26:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it goes to a great cause. And C, you
- 1:26:31Speaker 3: kind of want to like the Bills. Anyway, no, this,
- 1:26:36Speaker 3: if you're, just to describe it, it looks more like
- 1:26:38Speaker 3: a warthog than a buffalo.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Fair.
- 1:26:41Speaker 3: That kind of, you talk about the proportions being wrong.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: It's wrong in that way. And by the way, this
- 1:26:49Speaker 3: is about as good, if not better, than I could
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: draw the bills.
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: Absolutely. No critique.
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I only said that to describe, people haven't seen
- 1:27:00Speaker 3: it yet, listen to the radio, as they're trying to
- 1:27:05Speaker 3: picture what this might look like. It looks, I would say,
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: warthog-ish with the red stripe on there, which it's fantastic,
- 1:27:12Speaker 3: very cute. It looks like on the side there's a different...
- 1:27:18Speaker 3: like side patch logo that these kids have drawn to, um,
- 1:27:22Speaker 3: a couple of them have mountains on them.
- 1:27:24Speaker 1: Um, there's one that looks like a golf club. There's
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: one that is clearly a set of lungs, like human lungs. Yeah.
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: Maybe they're in for some kind of lung treatment and
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: shout out to these kids. Um, I know they're not
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: listening in Buffalo, but like keep fighting.
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: You never know.
- 1:27:42Speaker 3: This is, uh, this is cool for Josh Allen, uh,
- 1:27:47Speaker 3: to be doing this to benefit these kids, and we
- 1:27:49Speaker 3: just hope that these kids can keep fighting and can
- 1:27:53Speaker 3: survive these things. Child illness, cancer, whatever it is, terminal
- 1:27:58Speaker 3: illness or potentially terminal illness, the most unfair thing in
- 1:28:01Speaker 3: the world, and it sucks that it happens, but it's
- 1:28:07Speaker 3: awesome that people like Josh.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: Allen want to help him out. Well done for the Bills,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: for New Era Hats, for Josh Allen, who will be
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: wearing these. That's another thing. like there are actually hyper
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: strict rules in the nfl on what you're allowed to
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: wear as a player on the sidelines when you're in
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: uniform down to the hats your wristbands your socks have
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: to be a certain way all that stuff and he's
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: going to be wearing these things on the sideline which
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: means one of two things either the nfl is getting
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: out of their own way and letting a good cause
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: be a good cause or new era has decided we'll
- 1:28:44Speaker 1: pay the fine. If you get a fine or whatever,
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: which would almost make for better story, but That's cool
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: that he's he's going to be wearing these hats on
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: the sideline for real, which means they're like official Buffalo
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: Bills gear. So I hope we see some of his
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: other teammates do it, too, because this is their cool hats.
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Even without the proceed, if you had just said, I
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: found a kid that I think is cool. And I said,
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: you know what?
- 1:29:10Speaker 3: Just to be funny, I want you to draw like
- 1:29:14Speaker 3: NBA paint style on Twitter. I want you to draw
- 1:29:18Speaker 3: a Buffalo Bills logo because I'm going to put it
- 1:29:20Speaker 3: on an actual hat. I mean, I would still buy
- 1:29:23Speaker 3: it because it's.
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: Cool and it's kind of funny.
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: It's even better that these are kids who are actually
- 1:29:31Speaker 3: patients in this hospital and the proceeds go to them.
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: You love to see it. Great story from Buffalo. Here
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: is a story that's kind of at the opposite end
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: of the spectrum of altruism and feel-good and giving nature.
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: And it's one, unfortunately, I can relate to a lot
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: more closely. Did you see what Derek Scooble did when
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: he was traded to the Dodgers? Yeah, something to do
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: with espresso machine. He had purchased an espresso machine for
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: the locker room. Didn't endear himself. And this espresso machine
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: is like a high-quality espresso machine. It's hard to say.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: Espresso machine. Yeah. Espresso machine. Speaker 0 5th. It's a little,
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: little Todd Fritz going on. Scooble had purchased this espresso
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: machine and it was in the clubhouse. And he decided
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: that when he got traded, he was going to take
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: it with them. This is a little bit of a
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: spite store kind of a situation. So he bought one
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: for the tiger's clubhouse. It was in the tiger's clubhouse.
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: He gets, he says, this is mine. I'm taking it
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: to LA. He gets traded to LA. Now I, he
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: wanted to be traded to LA, right? I mean, who
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: wouldn't want to be traded to the best team in
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: the league. This wasn't one of those situations where he
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: was just like, please don't trade me Dodgers. And they
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: traded him anyway. So he was like, you know what? Fine.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: I'm taking my espresso machine with me, which tells you
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: the level of parsimonious spending that this guy is into.
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: If you're like, Hey, that was an expensive, expensive machine.
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: I'm taking it with me. If they traded you against
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: your will, I'm in support. If you're getting to go
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: to LA and you're now, instead of being in Detroit,
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: you're in Southern California. I don't love Southern California the
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: way that a lot of people do, but it's better
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: than Detroit. Okay. If you're getting to go, like at
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: that point, you say to your teammates in the Detroit clubhouse,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: all right, guys, I'm off to 88 degree weather all
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: year round. Possibly or probably a world series ring. Most
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: likely a world series at some point. And most likely
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: more money than I would ever make here because that's
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: how LA does things. I'm going to leave you the
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: espresso machine. Instead, he took the thing with him. That
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: is just hilarious. He said he was asked about it
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: and he said, I'll wear it because people would be like, yeah,
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: I'll wear it. I did buy it. But so he
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: bought the machine. He's taking it with him.
- 1:32:13Speaker 3: Yeah. I, I, I hear you on the, he probably
- 1:32:20Speaker 3: wasn't traded against his will to the Dodgers. Like he
- 1:32:23Speaker 3: probably was excited to join the Dodgers. I will just
- 1:32:26Speaker 3: say Detroit was the only organization he'd ever been with
- 1:32:29Speaker 3: as far as I know. And he won a Cy
- 1:32:32Speaker 3: Young and he brought them back into prominence over the
- 1:32:36Speaker 3: last couple of seasons. Not, where they're winning anything in
- 1:32:39Speaker 3: the playoffs, but being a playoff team at the very least.
- 1:32:43Speaker 3: Maybe he was just so fond of being there, despite
- 1:32:46Speaker 3: it not being a realistic spot to win a World Series,
- 1:32:49Speaker 3: or he was actually mad that he was leaving, even
- 1:32:52Speaker 3: going to the Dodgers.
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: I find that hard to believe, though. Spencer Torkelson, who
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: is the Tigers' first baseman, said he couldn't believe it
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: that Scooble took the machine with him. And it said,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: that was a really good espresso machine. I actually really
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: liked it. They had it set up alongside a coffee
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: grinder in the locker between Justin Verlander and Tarek Scooble's
- 1:33:19Speaker 1: spring training lockers.
- 1:33:21Speaker 3: So between the greatest pitcher, possibly one of the greatest
- 1:33:25Speaker 3: players in your franchise's history and the current best pitcher
- 1:33:30Speaker 3: in your franchise, just, just, just right in between them.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: That's fantastic. He also blamed his wife for this, which
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: is so fantastic. She, she really wanted it in LA.
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: He said, that was my wife. I wanted to leave
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: it and get a new one, but she wouldn't let me.
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: My wife was like, that was too expensive to just
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: run the charge back. What are you talking about?
- 1:33:49Speaker 4: It's not too.
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: Expensive for you. You know that we are multimillionaires, right? Honey,
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: like we're fine.
- 1:33:57Speaker 3: That's that's she's like, but do you know how the
- 1:33:59Speaker 3: deal with the taxes are in California, dude?
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Do you know? Do you know what? Okay. Do you
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: know what he's making this year? Do you know what? Terrence?
- 1:34:09Speaker 1: $ 32 million. She's like, how much of that state of
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: California going to take for us at the end of
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: the year though? Okay. Tarek most expensive espresso machine in
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: the world. It's got to be an Italian one, right?
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: Given that it's an espresso machine. Okay. The most expensive
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: commercial and custom espresso setups on the market can cost
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: anywhere from $ 30, 000. to over a million for ultra-rare custom-built
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: or jewel-encrusted concept machines. Jewel-encrusted. This was not one of those.
- 1:34:50Speaker 3: This was not a million-dollar one. It was probably tens
- 1:34:53Speaker 3: of thousands-dollar one.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Okay, so there's the Eversys Shotmaster or the Enigma series.
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: Those are $ 39, 000 to $ 46, 000. That's crazy. The San Remo
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: Opera 2... Has multi-boiler stability and distinct industrial design. Shout out.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: It's a Group 3 commercial machine. It's listed for $ 41, 500. So, hey,
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: should we get a new car or an espresso machine, hon?
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Here's the thing. Oh, wow, this is a fancy one.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: The La Marzocco KB90. Two group AV with scales espresso machine, $ 32, 580.
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: So they can really get up there.
- 1:35:32Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: However, if you make 36 million, what did I say?
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: 36 or 32? 32 million. If you make $ 32 million,
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: you could.
- 1:35:40Speaker 3: Buy another $ 30, 000 espresso machine. You absolutely can. You can
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: leave that for your teammates in Detroit. Spencer Torkelson doesn't
- 1:35:51Speaker 3: have to say publicly, oh, man, that kind of sucks.
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: I really like that. Really nice espresso machine. But let's
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: just take a moment and acknowledge how wonderful it is
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: that there is a professional athlete. making $ 32 million a
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: year in salary and being traded to the Dodgers where
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: he is going to make more and more and more.
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: And he's going to be a $ 50 million a year
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: type guy. Do a lot of winning. Let's just appreciate that.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: He is married to someone who's just like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: Let's not waste money. Let's not waste money here as
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: a very good thing. Absolutely. Isn't that wonderful?
- 1:36:29Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: I think, I think he's probably His teammates are mad
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: at him for taking the machine, but if your wife
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: is going to be mad at you for leaving the machine,
- 1:36:45Speaker 1: I didn't realize that I was going to be taking
- 1:36:47Speaker 1: this stance today, James. I was going to come on
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: here and kind of make fun of Scooble, especially because
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: he's a Dodger now. But he chose to let his
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: teammates make fun of him in the group chat and
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: the media to kind of write some snide remarks about him.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: but maintain peace in the home. This is probably the
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: right decision.
- 1:37:09Speaker 3: Did he maintain peace in the home though? See, because
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: she's like, you're getting out. You're just going to blame
- 1:37:13Speaker 3: it on me publicly like that. You can't just take
- 1:37:16Speaker 3: responsibility for it.
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: It's a great point. He probably just probably just destroyed
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: all the goodwill he had earned by listening to her,
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: by throwing her under the bus and be like, it
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: was my wife. It's not me. It's my wife, guys.
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: My wife's the one do that in the group chat
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: with your teammates. Maybe don't do that in front of
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: the reporters, but you know, maybe she's, maybe she's like, yeah,
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: you're damn right.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: It was me. Because she's proud of being a little
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: frugal that way, which she should be. What model was
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: the Scooble espresso machine? I'm doing some real work on it.
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: Some investigative journalism. Has not been publicly specified. All right.
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: We need someone in Michigan. I need someone from that
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: clubhouse to give me a photo of what espresso machine
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: this was. If it was bedazzled with diamonds and jewels. Okay.
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: That's over a million dollars. We're talking about a million dollars.
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: By the way, if you have a million dollars to
- 1:38:10Speaker 1: spend on an espresso machine, you better be a billionaire. Like,
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: give me a break. Do you think it was made
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: out of panda? Not endangered anymore, by the way. Did
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: you know that? Hey, shout out to the pandas. Let's
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: go on the comeback trail. Let's go, pandas. Uh, real quick.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: Did you see the jazz made a trade over the weekend? Yeah.
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: But are you actually trying to throw a real story
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: into the daily dump? Like a real sports story? I mean, sure.
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: This was, this was a shocking over the weekend news
- 1:38:44Speaker 3: dump for me. I did not expect the jazz to
- 1:38:46Speaker 3: be making any other roster additions. Oh, see, And I
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: think they came out on the right side of it.
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: Let's let's take a break. Let's talk about the trade.
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: Cause it is a real sports story, not an espresso
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: machine story. We'll talk about the jazz trade from over
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: the weekend. Next. That's your daily dump. This is the
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell show on ESPN, 792 on FM.
- 1:39:11Speaker 6: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 1:39:15Speaker 6: the best youth football coverage.
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: Here's O.C.
- 1:39:17Speaker 7: From the Murdoch Hyundai.
- 1:39:19Speaker 6: Studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: It is football season, and yet we have some jazz
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: news to talk about. A Utah Jazz trade over the weekend. James...
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: Let's see what we got here. Josh green and cash
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: to the Utah jazz for Cody Williams and John conchar,
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: Josh green coming from the Minnesota timber wolves.
- 1:39:51Speaker 3: So he was just traded to the T wolves himself
- 1:39:55Speaker 3: in the lamello ball trade earlier this off season. So
- 1:40:00Speaker 3: technically did not play a game for the T wolves.
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: It's a, it's a Russell Westbrook situation for Josh green.
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: And the tools. Now he's, now he's coming over to the,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: from the jazz.
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: I think the jazz come out on the right side
- 1:40:15Speaker 3: of this. So see, I, it may be a little
- 1:40:19Speaker 3: bit controversy for some jazz fans around here to say
- 1:40:23Speaker 3: that because Cody Williams was a top 10 pick and
- 1:40:28Speaker 3: he certainly still has a lot of potential, but he's,
- 1:40:31Speaker 3: it was this three years in and the best he's
- 1:40:34Speaker 3: played has been in the G league to be with
- 1:40:37Speaker 3: all due respect. And he had one or two really
- 1:40:40Speaker 3: good games in Summer League this year, but he's left
- 1:40:43Speaker 3: a lot more to be desired than the games that
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: he's done really well in. So Josh Green is not
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: the best defender in the league by any means, but
- 1:40:56Speaker 3: he's a guy who's an established NBA rotation player, and
- 1:41:00Speaker 3: you're getting rid of two guys who are not to
- 1:41:04Speaker 3: get him.
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: I think this is.
- 1:41:06Speaker 3: I think the Jazz come out on the right side
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: of this, a nice younger guy coming into more veteran
- 1:41:11Speaker 3: experience who plays some defense on the perimeter, can shoot
- 1:41:16Speaker 3: the three a little bit.
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: I think this is a good move by the Jazz.
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: Green makes about $ 15 million, just under $ 15 million a year.
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: Minnesota had to move him off their cap so they
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: could complete their signing of Jonathan Kuminga, who, let's see,
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: he got a two-year– oh, no. Yeah, a two-year $ 12. 4
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: million deal. Did he turn down like a $ 50 million
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: deal earlier?
- 1:41:42Speaker 3: Yeah, before he went to the Hawks, the Warriors last year,
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: remember the drama with his restricted free agency with his
- 1:41:54Speaker 3: current team at that time, the Warriors, they were not
- 1:41:58Speaker 3: willing to do more than $ 20 million a year. And
- 1:42:00Speaker 3: he thought, hey, I should command more money than that,
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: which he was. definitely wrong about, and now he's settling
- 1:42:09Speaker 3: for a lot less than that on a multi-year deal
- 1:42:13Speaker 3: with probably a better team, a team that's going to
- 1:42:16Speaker 3: be better than the Warriors this year and the T-Wolves, though,
- 1:42:18Speaker 3: at the very least.
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: But I think that the T-Wolves net out well with that, too.
- 1:42:24Speaker 3: Kamingo over Josh Green, but both teams probably got what
- 1:42:29Speaker 3: they needed with both those moves.
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: It was a... It was a three year extension with
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: the warriors for $ 75 million that he turned down and
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: he wanted over 30, I think, which was just very
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: tone deaf of him and his representation at that 20,
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: turning down 25 million and ending up with six per year.
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: If you turn down 25, you ended up playing for
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: a better team and you make like 19 or 20,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: that would still hurt, but you're just like, okay, but
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: I might get another ring here. This might be like
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: better for my career longterm. To end up with a
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: fraction of that offer is, I mean, this is your job.
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: And obviously the windows on this are remarkably tight, especially
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: in the NFL and the NBA. Guys like Jonathan Kaminga
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: probably aren't playing two decades in the league. That sucks.
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: That hurts. By all means, I'm sure he's enthusiastic and
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: excited to sign with Minnesota, but And that's great. You
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: also then have to fire your representatives who allowed you
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: to walk away from 75 million in golden state.
- 1:43:39Speaker 3: Well, this got circulated too. It reminds you of Dennis Schroeder.
- 1:43:44Speaker 3: A few years ago was he was offered what? 20
- 1:43:49Speaker 3: million a year over four years. I think it was,
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: or 20 something million. It was a four year deal,
- 1:43:53Speaker 3: 80 something million total. He ended up a year later,
- 1:43:58Speaker 3: signing with the Celtics or getting traded to sign and
- 1:44:01Speaker 3: trade with the Celtics for like 5 million. It just, man,
- 1:44:05Speaker 3: that is, that is not a good trade off by you.
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: At least Schroeder is still playing the league now, now
- 1:44:12Speaker 3: four or five years later and still making money. But
- 1:44:14Speaker 3: that was the best money he would have made a
- 1:44:19Speaker 3: near the best money he would have made on any
- 1:44:21Speaker 3: contract in his career. And he's like, no, I'm actually
- 1:44:24Speaker 3: worth way more than that. And it turns out, no,
- 1:44:26Speaker 3: you weren't Dennis Schroeder. Same thing with Jonathan Kaminga here recently.
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: It's very, very tough. But the Utah Jazz with Josh
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: Green sending Conchart and Williams. Conchart is expected to be
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: waved and stretched. They do the wave and stretch where
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: they push your guaranteed salary out over a few seasons.
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: So you wave with your hand and you stretch with
- 1:44:51Speaker 1: your arms?
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: Is that.
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: Minnesota expected to keep Cody Williams bouncing back and forth
- 1:44:57Speaker 1: from their Big League and G League roster potentially. All right.
- 1:45:02Speaker 3: He at least could be a nice depth piece for
- 1:45:05Speaker 3: them as the wing, and maybe they do a better
- 1:45:07Speaker 3: job of– he does a better job of developing under
- 1:45:09Speaker 3: their coaching staff than what the Jazz were able to
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: get out of him. I hope that's the case because
- 1:45:15Speaker 3: a lot of potential liked him in college at Colorado,
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: just didn't quite develop quickly enough for the Jazz to
- 1:45:22Speaker 3: be like, yeah, we want you long term.
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: All right. Got to take a break. Our number three
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: begins with Utah running back legend Zach Moss, who it
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: was announced officially last week, is a member of the
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: Utah radio broadcast team this year. We'll discuss all of
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: it in an upcoming matchup against Idaho with Zach Moss
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: next on the Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:45:49Speaker 7: You're tuned to.
- 1:45:50Speaker 6: The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of
- 1:45:53Speaker 6: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: Welcome to our number three here on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: Time to catch up with Zach Moss. The Utah football legend,
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: the NFL veteran, and as we learned last week, officially
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: the sideline reporter on Utah football radio broadcasts that you
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: can hear right here on ESPN 700, your home of
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: the Utes. This conversation brought to you by Mountain Home Services.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: Zach Moss, welcome back to the show. How are you, sir?
- 1:46:35Speaker 2: Good, guys.
- 1:46:37Speaker 5: How are you doing?
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: Doing all right. So, look, we were waiting on the announcement.
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: It came out after Monday's show last week. you, Sly,
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: Bill Riley on the call officially this year. Tell me
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: your feelings, your thoughts on taking on this new role.
- 1:46:55Speaker 5: Yeah. Super excited about it. You know, get a chance
- 1:46:59Speaker 5: to Continue to stay around the game in a different way.
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: Got some guys that have been doing it for some
- 1:47:07Speaker 5: years now, for a long time, that I get a
- 1:47:09Speaker 5: chance to learn from and things of that nature. So
- 1:47:12Speaker 5: super excited to be with that crew. Super lucky to
- 1:47:15Speaker 5: be with that crew. And just looking forward to a
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: lot of wins so there's going to be a lot
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: of great reporting.
- 1:47:22Speaker 1: So obviously Thursday night will be the first rollout. You've
- 1:47:25Speaker 1: got Idaho coming in to Rice Echo Stadium, and we've
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: been talking about expectations and things like that all preseason long.
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: Now game week is here. What is your main focus?
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: What are the things you're going to be looking for
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: from this first matchup on Thursday night?
- 1:47:42Speaker 5: The biggest thing I'm looking forward to, I think we
- 1:47:44Speaker 5: talked about it last time, is the offensive line. I
- 1:47:48Speaker 5: think that has to be the main staple of this
- 1:47:52Speaker 5: team to do what they want to do, right? You know,
- 1:47:55Speaker 5: the offense and the defense, you know, the trenches, the
- 1:47:58Speaker 5: game is won on the offensive line and the defensive line.
- 1:48:03Speaker 5: both sides of the ball will go as those guys
- 1:48:05Speaker 5: up front do. So the skills players, you know, we
- 1:48:09Speaker 5: aren't able to do much without having a good group
- 1:48:12Speaker 5: in front of us, you know, paving the way for us.
- 1:48:14Speaker 5: So my eyes would be definitely on the offensive line
- 1:48:18Speaker 5: to see, you know, they can do versus this team
- 1:48:21Speaker 5: coming in.
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: I know it's never the exact same result from matchups
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: when you've got different teams coming in and week to
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: week things change in college football. Idaho on Friday night
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: played against Cal Poly. They ended up losing 38-34 to
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: on a comeback, come from behind, touchdown by Cal Poly.
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: And watching a little bit of that and trying to
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: get a sense of what Utah was going to face
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: from Idaho in their first test of the season, the
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: Vandals' defense gave up a lot of yardage to this
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: Cal Poly offense. And I don't want to disrespect Cal Poly,
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: I don't want to disrespect Idaho, but it should be
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: even more of a mismatch when Idaho comes into Rice-Eccles
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: Stadium and takes on a Utah team that is bigger, stronger, faster,
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: et cetera, than Cal Poly. Uh, given what we saw
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: from Idaho, over 500 yards of offense surrender, does it
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: change the totals that we're looking for from Utah? That sound,
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: I believe was Zach Moss's phone disconnecting from this conversation.
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: So we'll do our best to get him back on, but, uh,
- 1:49:37Speaker 1: A little disconnect there. I think Zach dropped. James will
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: reconnect us potentially. The question I think is, well, okay,
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: Zach Moss is back. Sorry, Zach, we got disconnected there.
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: I don't know how much of the question you heard,
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: but It was effectively, you know, Idaho gave up a
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: lot to Cal Poly. Does that mean we need to
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: see more from Utah against this same Idaho defense?
- 1:50:09Speaker 5: I wouldn't say we need to see more. I think
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: it depends on what we see, right? If we come
- 1:50:16Speaker 5: out in the first quarter and we're struggling, kind of
- 1:50:19Speaker 5: how we did last year in those early games where,
- 1:50:21Speaker 5: you know, the offense kind of stalled a little bit,
- 1:50:24Speaker 5: you know, then maybe. But I think if things get
- 1:50:26Speaker 5: off to... to the right foot, we see some explosive plays.
- 1:50:31Speaker 5: You know, this game is mainly trying to build off
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: of things, right, and get ready and polish up some
- 1:50:36Speaker 5: things and seeing how these plays are going to look
- 1:50:40Speaker 5: for live games. Same with McGivens calling the offense and
- 1:50:46Speaker 5: Coach Swan on the defensive side, right? This is these
- 1:50:48Speaker 5: guys' first time with this group calling live action plays.
- 1:50:53Speaker 5: So it's all about getting the rhythm and seeing what
- 1:50:56Speaker 5: works for themselves and what doesn't work more so than,
- 1:51:00Speaker 5: you know, what the yardage can tell. So I'm looking
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: more underneath the hood of, you know, What's the detail
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: look like? How is Dampier getting off of the line
- 1:51:11Speaker 5: up to the ball? Are we checking things? Are we
- 1:51:12Speaker 5: seeing certain things at the line of scrimmage? Are we
- 1:51:14Speaker 5: making explosive plays? You know, that's the biggest thing that
- 1:51:18Speaker 5: I want to see because that's the stuff that is
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: going to go a long way when you get into
- 1:51:24Speaker 5: those conference games, right? It's Idaho, so, you know, not
- 1:51:32Speaker 5: many people are going to– care about the stats.
- 1:51:37Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:51:37Speaker 5: Cause I know if I was playing versus Idaho, uh,
- 1:51:40Speaker 5: as a foreign player, you know, you don't look at
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: the numbers. You'd look at the, how you, how you
- 1:51:44Speaker 5: did the operations. .
- 1:52:03Speaker 1: The game
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: was sealed for North Carolina on an offside penalty by
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: a TCU defensive lineman. And, of course, when you're a
- 1:52:12Speaker 1: coach and you're a player, you want your first outing
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: to be cleaner than what we saw from TCU. How
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: do you actually achieve that, though, Zach? Like, what is
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: the key in playing clean football when you haven't really been,
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: you know, you haven't been live action for months and
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: months now?
- 1:52:31Speaker 5: I think the main thing is the maturity of the players.
- 1:52:34Speaker 5: I think obviously everyone understands that you can't really simulate
- 1:52:39Speaker 5: a game. That's very, very hard to do. But the
- 1:52:42Speaker 5: really good coaches do the absolute best job they can
- 1:52:46Speaker 5: do to put you into the situations that you're probably
- 1:52:51Speaker 5: going to be in a lot of times when it
- 1:52:53Speaker 5: comes to the game day. So depending on how you
- 1:52:56Speaker 5: script practice and things of that nature, trying to get
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: you as much of a game feel as possible. So
- 1:53:02Speaker 5: that way, when you get to the game, right. And
- 1:53:04Speaker 5: you're in a third and 12, right. You know, essentially
- 1:53:09Speaker 5: how you want to operate, right. You've already kind of
- 1:53:11Speaker 5: done it, even though it was in a practice situation, right.
- 1:53:14Speaker 5: The game is all mental. So, but it ultimately comes
- 1:53:19Speaker 5: down to the maturity, right. Like I said, so the
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: coaches can do all of that, but, it comes down
- 1:53:24Speaker 5: to the players holding each other accountable, right? That's why
- 1:53:26Speaker 5: I said I want to see the operations. We'll see
- 1:53:28Speaker 5: the detail, right? See how Dan Pierre is getting these guys,
- 1:53:31Speaker 5: the leadership, essentially, how that all is going to come
- 1:53:35Speaker 5: together because this game is the type of game that
- 1:53:38Speaker 5: you schedule. This is why they schedule these games early
- 1:53:40Speaker 5: in the year so that way you can get certain things,
- 1:53:44Speaker 5: get those wrinkles out of the way and kind of
- 1:53:45Speaker 5: get this thing ironed out.
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: How would you describe the difference between FCS players matchups with,
- 1:53:53Speaker 1: you know, a big sky opponent like Idaho is versus
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: what you see from a power conference opponent, like in
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: your case, PAC 12, in this case, big 12 players. I,
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: I played at the big sky level and I was
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: on the Utah team. Uh, but when we were Mount
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: West conference team and to me, the biggest difference on
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: those two levels is always in the trenches and maybe
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: a little bit of speed in the back end as well.
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: Running backs and linebackers are usually about the same size
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: at both levels, but more explosive, obviously, at the power level.
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: When you played against the lower-level teams, what was your
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: experience as a running back? Were the tackles easier to break?
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: Were the guys a step and a half slower? You
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: characterize for me what the biggest difference is.
- 1:54:43Speaker 5: That's a great question. You know, I think when I
- 1:54:47Speaker 5: played against those type of schools, you know, I never.
- 1:54:52Speaker 5: Looked at it like that. Honestly, you know, as a player,
- 1:54:55Speaker 5: I never looked at it like that because, you know,
- 1:54:57Speaker 5: I think anybody who's ever to go play collegiate sports
- 1:55:00Speaker 5: on any level is a pretty decent athlete, right? But
- 1:55:05Speaker 5: I think what comes down to me is, like you said,
- 1:55:07Speaker 5: you know, obviously the main thing is the trenches for sure, right?
- 1:55:10Speaker 5: I think, you know, it's a big gap there. Absolutely.
- 1:55:14Speaker 5: The skill positions, you know, it varies, like you said,
- 1:55:18Speaker 5: but I think it comes down to details, details and fundamentals, right?
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: Like I knew that this game I couldn't possibly hit
- 1:55:26Speaker 5: some of these 40, 50 yard runs. because someone's going
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: to get out of a gap. Someone's going to be undisciplined, right?
- 1:55:33Speaker 5: I know that the coaching may not be at the
- 1:55:37Speaker 5: same level that, you know, our guys are that when
- 1:55:40Speaker 5: we go against them, right? Like the level of detail
- 1:55:44Speaker 5: is different, right? That's why these coaches are also at
- 1:55:48Speaker 5: the different levels as well, just as the players. So, um,
- 1:55:51Speaker 5: you know, we always know we can get bigger plays,
- 1:55:53Speaker 5: bigger splash plays and things of that nature. And you
- 1:55:56Speaker 5: would try certain things like that just because of, uh,
- 1:56:00Speaker 5: you know, details, fundamentals, and guys being in the right
- 1:56:03Speaker 5: place over and over and over.
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: Uh, again, Zach Moss, our guests here on the Sean
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: O'Connell show. He will be on the sidelines on the
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: radio broadcast on Thursday night as Utah takes on Idaho
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: in the season opener. Uh, we are expecting, you know,
- 1:56:21Speaker 1: like the starters potentially could be out of this game
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter. You want it to be, you know,
- 1:56:27Speaker 1: a four or five touchdown lead and you get the backups,
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: a few reps and things like that as the starter
- 1:56:33Speaker 1: who was maybe going to get the rest in the
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: third and fourth quarter in the second half, depending on
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: how big it was. How many times did that happen
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: in your career at Utah? And maybe more importantly in
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: How did you feel about it? Because you have these
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: limited opportunities to actually play in games. You're putting in
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: all this work and you're trying to pile up stats
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: and score touchdowns and things like that. And obviously you're
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: happy if your team's winning in a blowout fashion, but
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: do you want to come off the field? How did
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: it feel when you had those opportunities?
- 1:57:04Speaker 5: Yeah, it definitely happened a few times when I was
- 1:57:08Speaker 5: up at the U. You know, I think in the
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: moment you... when you're doing it and you have these
- 1:57:16Speaker 5: big wins, um, and you get taken out of the third,
- 1:57:19Speaker 5: fourth quarter or something like that.
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:57:21Speaker 5: Um, in the moment it feels good, right. Cause you're
- 1:57:24Speaker 5: not risking injury anymore.
- 1:57:25Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:57:26Speaker 5: You're not risking certain things that can come with playing
- 1:57:29Speaker 5: a full game.
- 1:57:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:57:31Speaker 5: Um, but you know, now when you look back at it, like, man,
- 1:57:34Speaker 5: I wish I would have ended up getting that those,
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: that the rest of that second half in there.
- 1:57:38Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:57:39Speaker 5: Uh, you know, I, I, one of the games that
- 1:57:42Speaker 5: comes to my mind is, uh, We played Oregon State
- 1:57:45Speaker 5: in 2019, and one of my buddies that I know,
- 1:57:49Speaker 5: he played for Oregon State, and I saw him recently,
- 1:57:52Speaker 5: and he's like, hey, you had like 200 yards or
- 1:57:54Speaker 5: something like that, 150-plus yards in the first quarter, essentially,
- 1:57:59Speaker 5: and you didn't play anymore after the second half. And
- 1:58:02Speaker 5: I'm like, man, that could have been, you know, essentially
- 1:58:05Speaker 5: a 200 plus 300 possible type of a game. Right.
- 1:58:10Speaker 5: So you never know. But in the moment, you're doing
- 1:58:13Speaker 5: the right thing, right? The name of the game is
- 1:58:15Speaker 5: to win. And, you know, you try to be a
- 1:58:18Speaker 5: team player as much as you can, and you try
- 1:58:20Speaker 5: to do your work when you get the opportunities. And
- 1:58:22Speaker 5: when the opportunities is you've done a great job in
- 1:58:26Speaker 5: your opportunities and the team has done a great job,
- 1:58:29Speaker 5: you know, it's time to come off the field sometimes
- 1:58:31Speaker 5: and allow other guys who also have done a lot
- 1:58:33Speaker 5: of work throughout the week to get some shine there.
- 1:58:39Speaker 1: I want to ask you a couple NFL questions here.
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: Cut down day happened yesterday in the NFL. And look,
- 1:58:46Speaker 1: it's a it's a cold business. You're more acutely aware
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: of that than I ever will be having played in
- 1:58:51Speaker 1: the league. What is that day like for guys that
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: are trying to make a roster and either they get
- 1:58:56Speaker 1: the call? Hey, you made the 53 man or vice versa. When,
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: you know, go clean out your locker. Thanks for your work.
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: Or maybe we'll see on the practice squad. If you can,
- 1:59:08Speaker 1: tell me what it's like for those guys on cut
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: down day.
- 1:59:13Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I can give you my best shot
- 1:59:16Speaker 5: at it. You know, because a lot of those some
- 1:59:19Speaker 5: guys that have been in that position, you know, I've
- 1:59:21Speaker 5: been I was close with while we were playing and
- 1:59:24Speaker 5: things like that. It's tough, you know, because like you said,
- 1:59:27Speaker 5: we just said, you know, you do all this work.
- 1:59:31Speaker 5: You train every single day in the offseason. You try
- 1:59:35Speaker 5: to do every single thing to put yourself in a
- 1:59:37Speaker 5: position to where you can have success and hopefully make
- 1:59:41Speaker 5: that roster. And sometimes, like you said, it is a
- 1:59:45Speaker 5: business first. Sometimes I've seen players who are probably better
- 1:59:49Speaker 5: than another guy not be able to play over that
- 1:59:52Speaker 5: guy just because of uh, you know, the money tied
- 1:59:55Speaker 5: up in a guy, right. Um, and a lot of
- 1:59:57Speaker 5: guys have fallen victim to that, um, and vice versa. Um, so,
- 2:00:02Speaker 5: you know, it's hard for sure. You know, you know,
- 2:00:05Speaker 5: but a lot of those guys do get opportunity, you know, to,
- 2:00:08Speaker 5: to go somewhere else and get on the practice squad
- 2:00:11Speaker 5: and you never know. Um, you're always an injury away
- 2:00:14Speaker 5: on when you're on a practice squad of possibly getting
- 2:00:16Speaker 5: called up and seizing your opportunity. Um, but, Yeah, it's
- 2:00:21Speaker 5: a tough world for sure to be in that space
- 2:00:25Speaker 5: and not know, right? Think about how hard it is
- 2:00:27Speaker 5: to go play football, physical, mental, emotional toll, and then
- 2:00:31Speaker 5: still at the end of the day not know, right,
- 2:00:35Speaker 5: if you're going to make the three-man roster. Or, you know,
- 2:00:38Speaker 5: sometimes guys know, right, a week before, two weeks before,
- 2:00:41Speaker 5: just if they haven't been playing, performing well, that, man,
- 2:00:45Speaker 5: I'm just, you know, I'm getting up. I'm not going
- 2:00:47Speaker 5: to make this roster anymore. I don't know where I'm
- 2:00:50Speaker 5: going to be in the next two weeks, three weeks.
- 2:00:53Speaker 5: I don't know if I'm going to even be playing
- 2:00:55Speaker 5: football or do I need to transition and look for
- 2:00:57Speaker 5: something else in the coming months here.
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: If you were preparing to run against a Los Angeles
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: Rams defensive front that now includes Miles Garrett and Aaron
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: Donald on the same D-line, what does that game planning
- 2:01:18Speaker 1: look like behind your offensive line in the NFL? Because
- 2:01:21Speaker 1: Aaron Donald, we've been speculating on it for weeks. He
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: made it official this past weekend. He is returning to
- 2:01:27Speaker 1: the Rams on a one-year deal.
- 2:01:31Speaker 5: Yeah, that is not fun for any opposing offensive line
- 2:01:35Speaker 5: and anybody who has to get hit by either one
- 2:01:37Speaker 5: of those two guys. I played against both, you know,
- 2:01:42Speaker 5: obviously both generational talents. That goes without saying. Absolute game wreckers.
- 2:01:49Speaker 5: I don't know. How you game plan is hard to
- 2:01:54Speaker 5: just game plan for.
- 2:01:55Speaker 4: One guy, right? And I've been in those meetings.
- 2:01:58Speaker 5: Where we're trying to game plan for each one of
- 2:02:01Speaker 5: those guys, right, on their respective teams, right? And that
- 2:02:05Speaker 5: changes every single thing you do if you're trying to
- 2:02:07Speaker 5: get game plan for one of them. So now you
- 2:02:10Speaker 5: get both of them, which is just– Crazy to think about,
- 2:02:15Speaker 5: but I think the main thing people forget about with
- 2:02:18Speaker 5: that defense is that, you know, I think even without
- 2:02:22Speaker 5: Aaron Donald, they were going to be top five. You know,
- 2:02:25Speaker 5: even last year, that defensive line was really, really, really good, right?
- 2:02:29Speaker 5: A lot of young players, and they performed really well,
- 2:02:32Speaker 5: which is why they made it to where they made
- 2:02:34Speaker 5: it to in the playoffs outside of the offense. What
- 2:02:36Speaker 5: let them down was the secondary, but they've upgraded the secondary.
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: And now.
- 2:02:43Speaker 5: I mean, you have some real corners in the back,
- 2:02:46Speaker 5: and that ball is definitely going to have to come
- 2:02:47Speaker 5: out a lot faster. But even before they got Aaron Donald,
- 2:02:50Speaker 5: they still had two really good D tackles who performed
- 2:02:54Speaker 5: at a very high level last season. And you mean
- 2:02:57Speaker 5: you can keep the same guys that perform at a
- 2:03:00Speaker 5: super high level who are probably going to be max
- 2:03:03Speaker 5: contract guys at some point when there's a chance? and
- 2:03:06Speaker 5: you get to bring Aaron Donald in for situational football,
- 2:03:09Speaker 5: because I highly doubt that he's going to need to play,
- 2:03:12Speaker 5: you know, 50 snaps, right? It's probably going to be,
- 2:03:16Speaker 5: you know, very situational guy when they need him to
- 2:03:19Speaker 5: be kind of like what the Rams kind of did
- 2:03:21Speaker 5: with Von Miller, the year that he won the super bowl.
- 2:03:24Speaker 5: And he would come in on certain plays where they
- 2:03:26Speaker 5: needed a big, big spark play and let these guys
- 2:03:30Speaker 5: who've been training all year and kind of just tee off.
- 2:03:32Speaker 5: Because like I said, it's, that D line, even without
- 2:03:35Speaker 5: Aaron Donald and you just interject, uh, miles Garrett, or
- 2:03:40Speaker 5: you take miles Garrett back off and you insert, uh, Jared,
- 2:03:43Speaker 5: Jared verse, and you upgrade the secondary like they did,
- 2:03:46Speaker 5: you know, I still would have been picking them to be, uh,
- 2:03:50Speaker 5: super favorites.
- 2:03:52Speaker 1: You know, who really is going to have a fun year. Uh,
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: Byron young, Nate Landman and Omar spades, the linebackers, uh,
- 2:04:00Speaker 1: in this, the standup linebackers in this defense that now
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: are going to get untouched on so many plays because
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: the offensive line and the blocking scheme is so caught
- 2:04:10Speaker 1: up with those guys up front. If you're Nate Landman,
- 2:04:13Speaker 1: and did you play against Nate Landman when he was
- 2:04:15Speaker 1: at Colorado?
- 2:04:15Speaker 5: Speaker 4, possibly I'm not positive.
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: I can't remember. I think he might, he's a little younger.
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: I can't remember if he you guys would have crossed over.
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: But anyway, great player, awesome tackling machine, right? But now
- 2:04:29Speaker 1: he doesn't get blocked. Like this changes that whole defense drastically.
- 2:04:35Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:04:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:04:36Speaker 5: I mean, If you have an MVP quarterback, you got
- 2:04:40Speaker 5: two really good receivers outside. You got a really good
- 2:04:43Speaker 5: running back. You got probably the best coach in the NFL.
- 2:04:49Speaker 5: And that team is all about they have so many
- 2:04:52Speaker 5: guys who have been in those big games before. Obviously,
- 2:04:55Speaker 5: guys have won the Super Bowl. So, you know, the
- 2:04:57Speaker 5: only thing they can do. get anywhere near close to
- 2:05:00Speaker 5: stopping this team would be injury, right, which we don't
- 2:05:03Speaker 5: wish because, you know, I want to see this team
- 2:05:06Speaker 5: fully healthy the whole year and, you know, see how
- 2:05:09Speaker 5: dominant they actually can be, right? But, you know, at
- 2:05:11Speaker 5: the same time, when you stack a lot of stars
- 2:05:14Speaker 5: on stars on stars, it hasn't always been the greatest,
- 2:05:17Speaker 5: but hopefully that's a little different this year.
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: Do you like watching NFL football, like just as a fan,
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: watching college football or watching NFL football more?
- 2:05:29Speaker 5: You know, I watch certain games depending on who's playing. So,
- 2:05:36Speaker 5: you know, my former teams I've played for. you know,
- 2:05:39Speaker 5: I'll watch those teams just from the guys that I
- 2:05:42Speaker 5: know that are still on the team. So I'll watch
- 2:05:44Speaker 5: from that aspect. But if it's just like, you know,
- 2:05:48Speaker 5: the Cardinals versus the Browns, you know, I'm not watching
- 2:05:51Speaker 5: football that much. But if it's, you know, if it's
- 2:05:55Speaker 5: guys that I know that are going to play a
- 2:05:58Speaker 5: big part in the game on offense, defense, or especially
- 2:06:01Speaker 5: whatever it may be, you know, I'll, I definitely watch
- 2:06:05Speaker 5: it and have my YouTube TV where I can watch
- 2:06:07Speaker 5: multiple games at once. That's where I'm at these days.
- 2:06:11Speaker 1: Well, Zach, we'll see you up there on Thursday. Good
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: luck on your first official game broadcast. That'll be a
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: lot of fun. And we'll be chatting again soon.
- 2:06:19Speaker 4: Thanks, man.
- 2:06:20Speaker 5: No problem. Thank you.
- 2:06:22Speaker 1: Zach Moss, sideline reporter on the official Utah radio broadcast.
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: Bill Riley is the voice of the Utah on the call.
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: Of course, Stevenson Sylvester. moves from the sideline up to
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: the booth. He'll be your color analyst this year. And
- 2:06:36Speaker 1: Zach Moss taking over sideline duties on that radio broadcast. Well,
- 2:06:43Speaker 1: we just referenced it. We just talked about it. It
- 2:06:45Speaker 1: is massive, massive news in the NFL. Aaron Donald is
- 2:06:51Speaker 1: officially part of the Rams season coming out of retirement
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: on a one-year deal. We'll talk about the other Utes
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: that made rosters. We'll talk about the other Utes that
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: got cut. and are awaiting potential claim off the waiver wire.
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:07:07Speaker 6: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 2:07:25Speaker 6: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:07:36Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and The Drive with Spence Checketts are going
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: to be at Wasatch Front Kia on September 4th from
- 2:07:43Speaker 1: 2 to 5 p.m. That's 770 West Riverdale Road in Ogden.
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: It's the annual Labor Day tent sale. Tents go up,
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: prices go down. Stop by, enter to win a TV.
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: Free Little Caesars hot and ready pizza is there while
- 2:07:56Speaker 1: it lasts. That is The Drive with Spence Checketts. on
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: September 4th, which is Friday. So the day after Utah
- 2:08:05Speaker 1: game day, Wasatch front Kia on seven 70 West Riverdale
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: road in Ogden, the labor day tent sale. Love it.
- 2:08:14Speaker 1: All right, let's talk about this. We speculated on it.
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: We thought that maybe it was going to happen and
- 2:08:19Speaker 1: it did. Aaron Donald is coming out of retirement. He's
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: joining the Rams roster on a one year, $ 20 million
- 2:08:25Speaker 1: deal incentives could push it all the way up to
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: $ 30 million. And goodness gracious, this makes them even more
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: terrifying for other teams in the NFL. I hate it
- 2:08:37Speaker 1: as a 49ers fan, obviously this is a team in
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: your division. So you got the defending super bowl champs
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: in your division. You've got now this Ram squad in
- 2:08:47Speaker 1: your division. And also you have the Cardinals. Hey, but
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: good news for you. George Kittle's expected to practice.
- 2:08:58Speaker 2: Great.
- 2:09:00Speaker 1: Isn't that wonderful? Isn't that wonderful? No. And we have
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: now the number one viral social media star, the most
- 2:09:08Speaker 1: viral story in the business with this Dajon Love guy
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: who pretended to be a 49ers wide receiver to scam
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: women out of money and It's hilarious. Isn't that great?
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: That is going to be a fantastic Netflix documentary when
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: this Dajon Love guy gets a full investigative untold treatment
- 2:09:30Speaker 1: on Netflix.
- 2:09:32Speaker 3: He's using AI to put me in a Niner's uniform.
- 2:09:37Speaker 1: Did you see all of the videos that have come out?
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: He was really committed to this bit. And he scammed
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: women out of a lot of money. And I don't know...
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: It's really funny because hindsight is 20. I don't know
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: how catfishes still work. I have a lot of sympathy
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: for the original people, like when it was new, when
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: folks were getting caught up by online relationships and people
- 2:10:02Speaker 1: on apps when they didn't really know how to double
- 2:10:05Speaker 1: check or that there were people with a lot of
- 2:10:07Speaker 1: this scamming tendency. So if you got catfished a decade
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: plus ago, I got sympathy for you. if you're somebody
- 2:10:15Speaker 1: now who's sending money to somebody on the internet, like
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: I don't have any more sympathy. You're just being dumb.
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: You should know better. Yeah, absolutely. And it's really too bad.
- 2:10:28Speaker 3: This would be an even funnier story if he was just,
- 2:10:33Speaker 3: you know, picking up women this way. He wasn't actually
- 2:10:36Speaker 3: taking their money, stealing money from them. Um, So it's
- 2:10:41Speaker 3: sad that there are victims to this, but it's also like, man, people,
- 2:10:46Speaker 3: it just feels like people should know better at this point.
- 2:10:48Speaker 1: Like don't send money to people. You don't know. He's
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: he's 35 years old, by the way. And that should
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: be enough where you're just like, well, the Niners don't
- 2:11:01Speaker 1: have any 35 year old receivers who move like that,
- 2:11:04Speaker 1: but these guys, These ladies, they weren't able with a
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: discerning eye. Where's the, where's the little brother in your life?
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: Where's your uncle? Where's your friend? Who's just like, I've
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: never heard of Dejan love. Maybe he's on the practice squad.
- 2:11:16Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:11:17Speaker 3: Maybe that's what happened. They're like, well, I guess he
- 2:11:18Speaker 3: could be a practice squad player. That's still kind of cool.
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: You know, you know how easy it is to Google
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: who is on the practice squad. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:11:28Speaker 5: Wow. Yeah.
- 2:11:29Speaker 1: Dejan love. So Dejan love, here's some silver lining for
- 2:11:33Speaker 1: Dejan love. He got caught. He's been arrested after scamming $ 1. 3
- 2:11:38Speaker 1: million out of women who thought he was a 49ers
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: wide receiver. He doesn't have to play against Miles Garrett
- 2:11:45Speaker 1: and Aaron Donald. Like the rest of your Niners have
- 2:11:49Speaker 1: to do.
- 2:11:49Speaker 3: It is really, for you as a Niners fan, it's
- 2:11:54Speaker 3: got to be really sucky to be like, man, the
- 2:11:58Speaker 3: Rams were already good and now they look unstoppable. And
- 2:12:02Speaker 3: the Seahawks.
- 2:12:04Speaker 1: are going to be good because they brought back almost
- 2:12:06Speaker 1: everybody from their super bowl winning team from just a
- 2:12:10Speaker 1: year ago.
- 2:12:10Speaker 3: And we, yeah, we're always going to overachieve because our
- 2:12:13Speaker 3: coaches are good, but we're going to, it's probably not
- 2:12:17Speaker 3: going to be enough in the playoffs against these two
- 2:12:19Speaker 3: guys who have these two teams that happen to be
- 2:12:21Speaker 3: in our division.
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: Like that's, that's gotta be rough. It's not ideal. I'll
- 2:12:25Speaker 1: tell you that James, but that's, that's the way of
- 2:12:29Speaker 1: things in the NFL. And, and by the way, We
- 2:12:33Speaker 1: do have to state for the Rams, this is like,
- 2:12:37Speaker 1: this is it. They have, they have pushed all their
- 2:12:42Speaker 1: chips to the center of the table. Now they get
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: this crazy Trump card where they can pull Aaron Donald
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: out of retirement, which is ridiculous. But like even the
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: miles Garrett trade, they have no, no first round picks
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: for like the next five years. This is a team
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: now that is like, if you don't win in this season,
- 2:13:02Speaker 1: and I guess maybe the window gets cracked open still
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: for next season. I mean, for Puka Nakua, who's kind
- 2:13:08Speaker 1: of next up if he can keep himself out of
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: the news cycle for the wrong reasons, for Puka Nakua
- 2:13:15Speaker 1: is going to get some $ 250 million deal. He's going
- 2:13:18Speaker 1: to be playing potentially for a Rams team on that
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: deal that no longer has Matthew Stafford, that has no
- 2:13:27Speaker 1: picks coming in, that is effectively in the position where
- 2:13:30Speaker 1: the 49ers find themselves, where all their stars are either
- 2:13:34Speaker 1: past their prime or or being held together by tape
- 2:13:39Speaker 1: and ibuprofen. Although, let's be honest, they're probably using much
- 2:13:44Speaker 1: better stuff than that. Yeah, they're probably better than ibuprofen.
- 2:13:49Speaker 1: By the way, they also traded for Trent McDuffie before
- 2:13:52Speaker 1: the draft. That's right.
- 2:13:52Speaker 3: Like, that's the oh, by the way. Like, oh, yeah,
- 2:13:54Speaker 3: they got maybe the best corner in the NFL this offseason.
- 2:13:57Speaker 1: He was effectively their draft pick because they traded away...
- 2:14:01Speaker 1: their draft future for that as well. And they were
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: just like, okay, we were going to, we're going to
- 2:14:07Speaker 1: give up draft picks, including our first round draft pick,
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: but we're going to get Trent McDuffie because we don't
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: want to do this in three years. We want to
- 2:14:14Speaker 1: do this now. And if you're less need, and if you're,
- 2:14:17Speaker 1: if you're Sean McVay, he's, it seems pretty clear to
- 2:14:20Speaker 1: me that his at least plan on paper is is
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: ride it out with Stafford, ride it out with Aaron Donald,
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: ride it out with miles Garrett here in these final,
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: this final year or two. And whenever those guys are done,
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: I will hopefully have won another super bowl. And now
- 2:14:36Speaker 1: I'm going to take a media job or something like that. Yeah.
- 2:14:40Speaker 3: And maybe, maybe cause McDuffie's still got some years left.
- 2:14:46Speaker 3: Obviously Puka Nakua is at the beginning of his career.
- 2:14:50Speaker 3: Maybe the quarterback you drafted in the first round is,
- 2:14:53Speaker 3: turns out to be pretty good and you can still
- 2:14:56Speaker 3: kind of contend, but you're not going to be, you're
- 2:14:59Speaker 3: not going to be a no doubt about it. Superbowl
- 2:15:01Speaker 3: contender after Stafford leaves, you wouldn't think, I.
- 2:15:04Speaker 1: Guess there is a possibility, right? That especially in the
- 2:15:08Speaker 1: case of a Puka Nakula, like let's say Puka has
- 2:15:10Speaker 1: a wonderful year, right? And is not in any bad
- 2:15:14Speaker 1: headlines here. And let's say that you win it this year.
- 2:15:18Speaker 1: and you want to re rack and reacquire some draft capital,
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: you could potentially move somebody like that to, to hit
- 2:15:26Speaker 1: a reset button. Cause he's among the four best wide
- 2:15:30Speaker 1: receivers in the league right now. So you could, you
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: could trade him in his prime, but if you're doing that,
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: I don't think Sean McVay is staying on board for
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: something like that. So we'll see. I I'm fascinated by
- 2:15:43Speaker 1: the Rams going all in, all in, all in. And I,
- 2:15:48Speaker 1: They did this before, and they won a Super Bowl.
- 2:15:53Speaker 1: And I thought that they wouldn't be back in this
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: position for at least five years. So here they are. Oh,
- 2:15:58Speaker 1: look at this, five years later.
- 2:16:00Speaker 3: But then they were maybe a year ahead of things
- 2:16:04Speaker 3: because they looked like they could be a Super Bowl
- 2:16:06Speaker 3: team last year, lost in the NFC Championship game. So
- 2:16:09Speaker 3: it has been remarkable to see Les Snead cash in
- 2:16:13Speaker 3: all of their draft capital over and over again to
- 2:16:17Speaker 3: go for it. and yet still be able to keep
- 2:16:21Speaker 3: a good team, a super bowl contending team in place,
- 2:16:25Speaker 3: except for maybe a couple of years in the last
- 2:16:27Speaker 3: six years doing that without much draft capital at all.
- 2:16:32Speaker 3: I think they've had two first round picks since then
- 2:16:35Speaker 3: is all like, it's remarkable the way that they're going
- 2:16:39Speaker 3: for it every year. And yet it somewhat long-term they've
- 2:16:44Speaker 3: stayed contenders. You don't really see that.
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: And look, They use one of their first round picks
- 2:16:51Speaker 1: on Ty Simpson, right? Yeah. Which quarterback of the future
- 2:16:55Speaker 1: they're hoping. So I guess I could be completely dead wrong.
- 2:16:58Speaker 1: I could be up in the night. Like there's maybe
- 2:17:00Speaker 1: Rams insiders and fans just like, what are you talking about, dude?
- 2:17:03Speaker 1: We used a number one pick on the next guy,
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: the guy to throw to Puka when Puka is on
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: that big deal. I just don't see being able to,
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: to keep all the plates spinning at once because they
- 2:17:15Speaker 1: have They've really mortgaged a lot, and they're at the
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: top of the salary cap. I guess Aaron Donald's going
- 2:17:23Speaker 1: to come off at some point again. Yeah, one-year deal
- 2:17:26Speaker 1: is all it is for right now. I would be
- 2:17:30Speaker 1: surprised at this point, August 31st.
- 2:17:33Speaker 3: I'd be surprised if he plays for more than this season,
- 2:17:38Speaker 3: but I didn't think he was coming back for this
- 2:17:40Speaker 3: season until a few months ago, so... You never know
- 2:17:43Speaker 3: what's going to happen with in Rams land. I do
- 2:17:46Speaker 3: think that if you're a fan of the Rams, this
- 2:17:49Speaker 3: is exactly what you want. You want a, an owner,
- 2:17:53Speaker 3: you want a head coach, you want a GM who
- 2:17:55Speaker 3: just always wants to go for it every year. And
- 2:17:58Speaker 3: you want to have the ability to make these kinds
- 2:18:02Speaker 3: of trades, make these free agent signings that they've made
- 2:18:06Speaker 3: in order for you to always be a contender. Like
- 2:18:08Speaker 3: this is a fan's dream. and it's come to fruition
- 2:18:12Speaker 3: not that long ago because they won a Super Bowl too.
- 2:18:15Speaker 3: It's not just one of those where it's like, okay, great,
- 2:18:18Speaker 3: we're always contending. Oh, man, but we can never win
- 2:18:20Speaker 3: the big one. They've already shown that they can win
- 2:18:22Speaker 3: the big one. So if you're a fan of the Rams,
- 2:18:24Speaker 3: it's a great time to be a Rams fan for sure.
- 2:18:26Speaker 1: Well, and I get it. If you're a Jazz franchise,
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: you're probably in a slightly different situation than what the
- 2:18:33Speaker 1: Rams are in the NFL because you have to slow
- 2:18:35Speaker 1: play and you have to worry more about draft capital
- 2:18:38Speaker 1: and things like that. but so many owners and GMs
- 2:18:43Speaker 1: preach patience. We've got a game plan. We've got, and
- 2:18:47Speaker 1: the Rams are just like, yeah, my, my game plan
- 2:18:50Speaker 1: is to just spend it fast and loose. Let's go.
- 2:18:52Speaker 1: Is he good right now? We'll worry about next year,
- 2:18:55Speaker 1: next year, bring him. Let's go. Hey, you want to
- 2:18:58Speaker 1: try to win? Let's let's go. I, I bet less
- 2:19:01Speaker 1: need is not, he has no idea what he's doing
- 2:19:03Speaker 1: next weekend. He's just like, He's a fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of guy,
- 2:19:09Speaker 1: as much as a GM can be, it seems.
- 2:19:11Speaker 3: He's like, you know what parties I'm going to tomorrow?
- 2:19:13Speaker 3: I don't care about the weekend right now. He was
- 2:19:16Speaker 3: kind of cool, honestly.
- 2:19:17Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:19:18Speaker 3: And like I said, if your teams are in the
- 2:19:21Speaker 3: position to be able to do it that way, that's
- 2:19:24Speaker 3: what you want. If your teams are not, then, I mean,
- 2:19:28Speaker 3: the prudent thing is to be more patient and do
- 2:19:30Speaker 3: a long-term rebuild and strike at the right moment.
- 2:19:36Speaker 1: It's really good.
- 2:19:36Speaker 3: Really cool that you got a team like the Rams
- 2:19:39Speaker 3: just going, you know what, we don't actually have to
- 2:19:42Speaker 3: be patient. And then it's not like, I know they're
- 2:19:45Speaker 3: an LA team, but it's not like they're the Yankees.
- 2:19:46Speaker 3: It's not like they're the, like the Cowboys where they're
- 2:19:49Speaker 3: just a hated franchise by just about everybody. It's kind
- 2:19:54Speaker 3: of refreshing to see a team that isn't one of
- 2:19:57Speaker 3: those kind of operating like that. Um, Speaking of the NFL,
- 2:20:03Speaker 3: Kyrie's Rowan, former Ute and Aggie waved by the Broncos.
- 2:20:08Speaker 3: Lucky photo waved by the giants. Britain Covey waved by
- 2:20:13Speaker 3: the Eagles. Jaron Kump cut by the bears. Jack Balmeister
- 2:20:18Speaker 3: waved by the Rams. So that's going to stand in
- 2:20:21Speaker 3: your way.
- 2:20:22Speaker 1: Rams. Yeah. Why don't you want a really good punter?
- 2:20:25Speaker 1: Doesn't make any sense. Um, These guys, of course, if
- 2:20:29Speaker 1: they claim waivers, or excuse me, if they clear waivers,
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: they can then be signed back to the practice squad.
- 2:20:35Speaker 1: I've been keeping an eye on the waiver wire. There's
- 2:20:38Speaker 1: actually a really interesting situation developing on the waiver wire
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: where a judge this weekend, this past weekend, said that
- 2:20:46Speaker 1: actually the SEC cannot block former pro players from playing
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: in SEC football games. And the league has reluctantly said, okay,
- 2:20:56Speaker 1: we'll abide by the law as interpreted by this judge,
- 2:21:00Speaker 1: Zach Pyburn, who we've talked about a lot. He's the
- 2:21:02Speaker 1: one who had two sacks in a game for the
- 2:21:04Speaker 1: Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the preseason. Then he was cut.
- 2:21:08Speaker 1: He has been claimed off waivers by the Kansas city chiefs.
- 2:21:12Speaker 1: He also is in the transfer portal and has an
- 2:21:15Speaker 1: agreement reportedly with LSU. So we might have a real
- 2:21:19Speaker 1: time situation where, where we're going to see a player
- 2:21:22Speaker 1: decide whether or not he wants to go beyond the
- 2:21:25Speaker 1: Kansas city chiefs roster for whatever, or whether he wants
- 2:21:30Speaker 1: to come back and play for LSU and maybe make
- 2:21:33Speaker 1: more money by playing for LSU. Isn't that crazy?
- 2:21:36Speaker 3: That is, that is insane. It's almost as insane as
- 2:21:40Speaker 3: any judge being like, you can't make rules about your
- 2:21:43Speaker 3: own conference.
- 2:21:44Speaker 1: No, no, no, no. You can't make sensible rules. Like,
- 2:21:47Speaker 1: come on. You're allegedly your honor. Stop it. Well, judges
- 2:21:51Speaker 1: have been, I don't like to get political. Judges have
- 2:21:55Speaker 1: been making some indefensible decisions, some indefensible judgments. Yes. You
- 2:22:02Speaker 1: could say like some judges in the United States right
- 2:22:05Speaker 1: now are legitimately the most in this sports thing is
- 2:22:09Speaker 1: not like consequential. Ultimately it's like, whatever, who cares? It's
- 2:22:13Speaker 1: just sports. Some of the stuff that's being decided by
- 2:22:17Speaker 1: judges right now in the United States is like, Downfall
- 2:22:21Speaker 1: of society type stuff like get off your bench God
- 2:22:26Speaker 1: complex and realize that there is a better way to
- 2:22:29Speaker 1: do things in the sec. They're going to continue to
- 2:22:34Speaker 1: explore all options. They have, they are going to, uh, to,
- 2:22:39Speaker 1: to fight this ruling. They're also talking about, well, hold
- 2:22:43Speaker 1: on a minute. If we can't stop them from playing,
- 2:22:46Speaker 1: if LSU can't stop them from playing, that's fine. But
- 2:22:49Speaker 1: there's nothing saying we have to play against LSU. There's
- 2:22:53Speaker 1: nothing saying that we, as the SEC, can't vote to
- 2:22:56Speaker 1: expel LSU for using these players. They'll probably find a
- 2:23:01Speaker 1: different judge that says, no, actually, you can't do that.
- 2:23:05Speaker 3: I'm sorry. Sensible rules don't make any sense in my courtroom.
- 2:23:09Speaker 3: Did you ever, when you were a kid, some of
- 2:23:11Speaker 3: these judges, like you said, sports doesn't matter at all
- 2:23:14Speaker 3: compared to a lot of other things.
- 2:23:16Speaker 1: But some of these judges should be disbarred for some
- 2:23:18Speaker 1: of these things. These judges right now are the equivalent...
- 2:23:22Speaker 1: Did you ever have this when you were a kid
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: where either... You didn't want to invite somebody to the
- 2:23:28Speaker 1: birthday party. And then their mom called and your mom
- 2:23:30Speaker 1: was just like, you have to invite this person or,
- 2:23:34Speaker 1: or maybe you were the, maybe you were the kid
- 2:23:36Speaker 1: that your mom called. Hey, you have to invite my son.
- 2:23:39Speaker 1: And you could tell that you weren't welcome. And you
- 2:23:41Speaker 1: could tell you weren't welcome. I've been on both sides
- 2:23:43Speaker 1: of that in my childhood. That's what this is. LSU
- 2:23:47Speaker 1: is right now. They're the one that the judge is
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: the mom calling. Actually, you have to invite my son
- 2:23:52Speaker 1: to the birthday party. And the rest of all of
- 2:23:56Speaker 1: college football, not just the sec, the rest of all
- 2:23:58Speaker 1: of college football is just like, well, this is going
- 2:24:02Speaker 1: to ruin the party, but okay. I guess he's here. Sure.
- 2:24:06Speaker 1: Thank you for making us do this better. At least
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: bring a cool present. So wait, you were, you were
- 2:24:15Speaker 1: the uninvited guest to some parties.
- 2:24:18Speaker 2: Not at all.
- 2:24:18Speaker 1: It wasn't a birthday party. It was a concert. It
- 2:24:21Speaker 1: was real. I still have, like, I'm cringing inwardly thinking
- 2:24:26Speaker 1: about it right now. Were you telling your mom, no,
- 2:24:27Speaker 1: it's fine, I don't want to go? No, I wanted
- 2:24:30Speaker 1: to go. You wanted to go, okay. And I didn't
- 2:24:32Speaker 1: realize until we were actually at the concert that I
- 2:24:35Speaker 1: wasn't really welcome there. Oh, no. And so I was
- 2:24:38Speaker 1: just like, wow, this is a terrible experience for the
- 2:24:40Speaker 1: next three or four hours.
- 2:24:41Speaker 10: Oh, no.
- 2:24:43Speaker 1: It was not good.
- 2:24:45Speaker 3: And these were, like, you thought you were friends, but
- 2:24:49Speaker 3: you found out you weren't really... That close of friends.
- 2:24:52Speaker 1: It was one of those that we had, it was like,
- 2:24:53Speaker 1: we were really close friends for a time. And this was,
- 2:24:57Speaker 1: and this was like, as the friendship was deteriorating, but
- 2:25:02Speaker 1: the dad was also the boy scout leader. And we
- 2:25:04Speaker 1: had been like, we had gone on a scout camp
- 2:25:06Speaker 1: and we had listened to this. It was Jethro Tull,
- 2:25:10Speaker 1: which is like music for old people. I don't know
- 2:25:12Speaker 1: why we all loved it. It was Jethro Tull. And
- 2:25:15Speaker 1: Jethro Tull was coming. And I was just like, oh
- 2:25:18Speaker 1: my gosh, Jethro Tull's got, we had listened on a
- 2:25:20Speaker 1: scout camp, driving down to scout camp in their car,
- 2:25:23Speaker 1: in the dad's car. He was our scout leader. We
- 2:25:25Speaker 1: had listened to that and we've loved it. And it
- 2:25:27Speaker 1: was just like, heck yeah. And then they were like
- 2:25:30Speaker 1: at one of the scouting activities, they were like, oh,
- 2:25:32Speaker 1: we're going to the Jethro Tull concert. And I was like,
- 2:25:34Speaker 1: I want to go to the Jethro Tull concert. And
- 2:25:37Speaker 1: my mom was just like, oh, Let me call and
- 2:25:39Speaker 1: see if they'll take you unbeknownst to you. They like
- 2:25:42Speaker 1: rolled their eyes. As you said that probably exactly. And
- 2:25:45Speaker 1: then my mom called like, Hey, would you be okay? If,
- 2:25:48Speaker 1: if Sean came to the Jethro Tull concert with you
- 2:25:51Speaker 1: and dad wasn't like, didn't realize that the friendship was
- 2:25:55Speaker 1: falling apart. Scout leader. Dad was just like, yeah, okay, fine. Yeah,
- 2:25:58Speaker 1: they had a great time at the camping trip. Of
- 2:26:00Speaker 1: course they did. And then when I went there, then
- 2:26:02Speaker 1: I realized, like, they didn't want me there. And I
- 2:26:04Speaker 1: was just like, oh, no.
- 2:26:05Speaker 3: And that just sounds like the plot of a new
- 2:26:09Speaker 3: CW show right there. We were best friends in elementary school, okay?
- 2:26:14Speaker 1: And now we're enemies. You're hitting it exactly. It was
- 2:26:18Speaker 1: like we were best friends in seventh grade, and in
- 2:26:19Speaker 1: eighth grade it all fell apart. And that's when the
- 2:26:23Speaker 1: concert happened. What did you do, Sean? What did you do?
- 2:26:27Speaker 1: I don't think anything meaningful. By the way, kids grow apart, man.
- 2:26:32Speaker 1: It's rough when you're in it, but it happens. Ended
- 2:26:35Speaker 1: up later in life, totally cordial friends again. But, you know.
- 2:26:38Speaker 1: Have you told this story? Never. Have you guys talked
- 2:26:41Speaker 1: about it? Never. You should bring it up. Never.
- 2:26:44Speaker 3: You should bring it up and then update us on
- 2:26:46Speaker 3: the show with your reaction.
- 2:26:47Speaker 1: He's a doctor now. He's a real doctor now.
- 2:26:50Speaker 3: Well, shout out to Dr. Sean's friend. Or former friend.
- 2:26:55Speaker 3: I don't know what we call you. I'm sure he's
- 2:26:59Speaker 3: listening and going, oh my gosh, I remember that.
- 2:27:01Speaker 1: That was terrible. He's probably listening just being like, yeah,
- 2:27:04Speaker 1: why did you force your way into the Jethro Tull concert,
- 2:27:07Speaker 1: you moron? And now we're not friends again. All right, well,
- 2:27:10Speaker 1: after that trauma dump, we'll take one more break here,
- 2:27:13Speaker 1: and we'll close it out next with a little crosstalk.
- 2:27:16Speaker 1: It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:27:29Speaker 7: I play my part and you play your game. This
- 2:27:33Speaker 7: is the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:27:34Speaker 4: Your home of the best inside of your youth.
- 2:27:37Speaker 6: Let's get back to OC from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio.
- 2:27:40Speaker 6: of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:27:46Speaker 1: James Peterson, if you can, grab some Jethro Tull out
- 2:27:50Speaker 1: of the system if we have any, because Spence just
- 2:27:52Speaker 1: came in and went, Jethro Tull sucks.
- 2:27:55Speaker 7: How dare you?
- 2:27:57Speaker 1: Text football to three, three, nine, eight, six for your
- 2:27:59Speaker 1: chance to win ESPN 700 tailgate passes season opener Thursday night.
- 2:28:04Speaker 1: Tailgate's going to open at 4 PM on guardsman way.
- 2:28:06Speaker 1: ESPN's ESPN 700 tailgate is brought to you by R
- 2:28:10Speaker 1: and R barbecue sound warehouse and Budweiser football to three, three, nine, eight,
- 2:28:15Speaker 1: six for your chance to win ESPN 700 tailgate passes.
- 2:28:20Speaker 1: Crosstalk brought to you by our friends at advanced window products. 801-850-9100.
- 2:28:25Speaker 1: Set an appointment right now. Get discounts when you buy
- 2:28:28Speaker 1: 10 windows or more. They've got financing options. And most importantly,
- 2:28:32Speaker 1: a lifetime warranty on the windows that is transferable when
- 2:28:35Speaker 1: you sell your home. Hi, Spence Checketts. Look, man. I'm
- 2:28:40Speaker 1: not anti-flute. But, like, you've got to moderate the flute.
- 2:28:45Speaker 12: And this is a decades-long debate I've had with my father.
- 2:28:50Speaker 1: All you flautists out there. Rally against Spence Checkers.
- 2:28:53Speaker 8: No, no.
- 2:28:54Speaker 1: Let me be clear.
- 2:28:54Speaker 12: I'm not anti-flute. Some flute is fine. You need to
- 2:28:59Speaker 12: moderate the flute. Jethro Tull never moderated the flute. You
- 2:29:03Speaker 12: ask James to find a Jethro Tull song, go ahead
- 2:29:07Speaker 12: and find one without a flute.
- 2:29:09Speaker 1: That's all I'm asking. Right there. You're about one second
- 2:29:14Speaker 1: into this.
- 2:29:14Speaker 12: That's all I'm saying. I've had this debate with my
- 2:29:17Speaker 12: father for years. He is convinced Jethro Tull... It's like
- 2:29:21Speaker 12: one of the most underrated bands of all time. And, again,
- 2:29:24Speaker 12: it's just too much flute, man.
- 2:29:26Speaker 1: That's all. That's all it is.
- 2:29:27Speaker 12: I'm not saying they're not horrible, but they're overrated. Tell
- 2:29:32Speaker 12: that to Ron Burgundy. The jazz flute up his sleeve?
- 2:29:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:29:37Speaker 12: Oh, I'm not prepared for this. But mostly I just
- 2:29:40Speaker 12: wanted to give you a hug after that. You got
- 2:29:42Speaker 12: left out of the Jethro Tulls concert, man.
- 2:29:44Speaker 1: No, no, I got to go. I realized mid-concert I
- 2:29:48Speaker 1: was not welcome there. That was a bad situation. And
- 2:29:51Speaker 1: so you would have rather, in retrospect, have not gone, correct? Yes,
- 2:29:55Speaker 1: if I could go back and talk to my 8th
- 2:29:56Speaker 1: grade self. I really don't mind if you sit this
- 2:30:01Speaker 1: one out. Is that a flute? That's a Jethro Tull lyric.
- 2:30:04Speaker 1: You would know that if you appreciated the master. It
- 2:30:06Speaker 1: sounded like you were talking the way a flute would speak. Yeah,
- 2:30:10Speaker 1: that's a little bit of how he sings. Well, let me.
- 2:30:12Speaker 12: You and I might be different this way. You know
- 2:30:14Speaker 12: the whole FOMO, fear of missing out? I'm a JOMO guy.
- 2:30:18Speaker 12: I don't want... Please don't invite me to the party.
- 2:30:21Speaker 12: You're jealous of missing out? No, that's joy of missing out.
- 2:30:24Speaker 1: Oh, okay. Don't invite me to the party. I don't
- 2:30:27Speaker 1: want to go.
- 2:30:28Speaker 12: You know, if I run into you and I haven't
- 2:30:31Speaker 12: seen you since college, don't say, let's do lunch.
- 2:30:33Speaker 1: I don't want to do lunch with you. I'm going
- 2:30:35Speaker 1: to start inviting you to stuff just to make sure
- 2:30:37Speaker 1: that you feel that, oh, I don't want to go.
- 2:30:40Speaker 12: Well, but here's the other thing, like... I'll feel bad.
- 2:30:44Speaker 12: I am an introverted empath, is what I am. I'm
- 2:30:47Speaker 12: a kind, sweet man. That is completely inaccurate.
- 2:30:50Speaker 1: What are you talking about? You're not introverted, first of all.
- 2:30:53Speaker 1: I'm an introvert. You can't do this job and be
- 2:30:55Speaker 1: an introvert. I'm in a studio alone for four hours,
- 2:30:58Speaker 1: and then I go home. I live alone. I make dinner.
- 2:31:02Speaker 1: I watch a game. I watch a show. I go home.
- 2:31:05Speaker 1: And it's solitude. It's peace. I get to pick what
- 2:31:07Speaker 1: I want to eat. I don't have to hear it
- 2:31:09Speaker 1: from anyone.
- 2:31:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:31:11Speaker 2: Right?
- 2:31:11Speaker 1: Sounds like loneliness.
- 2:31:13Speaker 12: It sounds like something's ringing true all of a sudden, huh?
- 2:31:15Speaker 12: Did I hit a nerve just now?
- 2:31:18Speaker 1: Not at all. I don't want to hear it, okay?
- 2:31:21Speaker 1: Sorry that I didn't do the thing right.
- 2:31:24Speaker 12: Sorry that I don't read your mind and you're mad
- 2:31:25Speaker 12: at me now because I guessed wrong, okay? I'm going
- 2:31:28Speaker 12: to go make a steak and watch a game and
- 2:31:29Speaker 12: go to bed. I get all the answers to the
- 2:31:34Speaker 12: test wrong.
- 2:31:35Speaker 1: I do my best. It doesn't work. I don't want
- 2:31:37Speaker 1: to hear it. So I am introverted, believe it or not.
- 2:31:41Speaker 1: Are you at all?
- 2:31:43Speaker 12: I am the opposite of an introvert. I am an
- 2:31:46Speaker 12: extroverted extrovert. So you like social events. You want to
- 2:31:49Speaker 12: go to the party. You want to go to the
- 2:31:51Speaker 12: Jethro Tull show.
- 2:31:52Speaker 1: My battery is recharged by the presence of humans. My
- 2:31:55Speaker 1: battery is recharged by my alone time, period. Okay. Although
- 2:31:59Speaker 1: I did make it to the Morgan Scali press conference today.
- 2:32:02Speaker 1: I know.
- 2:32:02Speaker 12: You were stirring the pot. You were trying to get
- 2:32:05Speaker 12: people angry. No, I was actually, that was intentional. To
- 2:32:08Speaker 12: let Morgan get the message out that things are good
- 2:32:10Speaker 12: up here.
- 2:32:11Speaker 2: Great.
- 2:32:11Speaker 1: Sean. Great. Chess over here, not checkers. Yeah, you're right.
- 2:32:14Speaker 1: You're right. That's exactly what you're doing. You're right.
- 2:32:16Speaker 12: No, that's 100% what I was doing.
- 2:32:18Speaker 1: I agree with you. You said I was trying to
- 2:32:21Speaker 1: stir the nest. And then I stood corrected.
- 2:32:23Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:32:24Speaker 1: That's good self-awareness. Yes. Family on three. One, two, three. Family. Yes.
- 2:32:28Speaker 1: That's nice. We should end every Crosstalk with that. Let's not.
- 2:32:32Speaker 1: I thought Morgan was dynamite. I just want to be
- 2:32:34Speaker 1: up at the building. Win the press conference. Text 877-353-0700.
- 2:32:37Speaker 12: It's really all that matters. Good to be up there.
- 2:32:41Speaker 12: They're starting to set up the tailgate. It feels like
- 2:32:44Speaker 12: fall on campus. About to turn our calendar to September.
- 2:32:47Speaker 12: And I'm pumped, man. I say this every time we
- 2:32:50Speaker 12: launch into a game week. Because we wait all year
- 2:32:53Speaker 12: for this. And then we blink and it is gone.
- 2:32:56Speaker 12: You get six Saturdays, kids.
- 2:32:58Speaker 1: Seven this time. Seven this time.
- 2:32:59Speaker 12: One's a Thursday. Um, and who knows? Let's keep our
- 2:33:02Speaker 12: fingers crossed. Maybe something crazy.
- 2:33:04Speaker 1: Happens a bit more than that, huh?
- 2:33:05Speaker 4: Okay.
- 2:33:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:33:06Speaker 1: On campus college football playoff game. Let's get weird.
- 2:33:08Speaker 12: But out of all of the Saturdays you get all year,
- 2:33:11Speaker 12: of course, this is a Thursday. You only get, you know,
- 2:33:14Speaker 12: six or seven of these things. So enjoy it.
- 2:33:16Speaker 1: Uh, I can't wait. I, I don't know what it's been.
- 2:33:20Speaker 12: I think ever since the jazz decided they were going
- 2:33:23Speaker 12: to be unserious about their deal. Now that's going to
- 2:33:25Speaker 12: change this year. They made a good trade over the weekend.
- 2:33:27Speaker 12: We'll talk about today. There's been something about football season.
- 2:33:31Speaker 12: It's even a little bit more appealing because we have
- 2:33:33Speaker 12: so many really great college football programs in the state.
- 2:33:37Speaker 12: And our current professional basketball team has gone through a four-year,
- 2:33:41Speaker 12: really difficult stretch.
- 2:33:43Speaker 1: RSL cannot find their way at all. So I'm excited
- 2:33:46Speaker 1: for this, man. I'm excited for Thursday. Excited to be
- 2:33:48Speaker 1: up there early. Yeah, I mean, it's going to be great.
- 2:33:51Speaker 1: Can't wait for it. And we've got great content leading
- 2:33:55Speaker 1: up to it this week. We've got Devin Dampier joining us.
- 2:33:58Speaker 1: We've got Coordinator's Corner this week. We had the Morgan
- 2:34:01Speaker 1: Scali presser with, you know, things for you to react
- 2:34:04Speaker 1: to out of that. Coach's show is tomorrow night. The
- 2:34:06Speaker 1: return of the coach's show. We got Carlos Alcarez wearing
- 2:34:10Speaker 1: some awesome air force ones at the U S open.
- 2:34:13Speaker 1: It's just a great sports week. That's a good looking outfit.
- 2:34:16Speaker 1: That is a good looking out. I will say this.
- 2:34:18Speaker 1: He was wearing like he had full tank top, like
- 2:34:20Speaker 1: Brown tank top Brown shorts earlier. And it was kind
- 2:34:24Speaker 1: of a narrow cut tank top. So he kept showing nip.
- 2:34:27Speaker 1: There's a lot. There was some, Wardrobe malfunctions. Alcarez was
- 2:34:30Speaker 1: exposing too much nipple during the U.S. Open today. Do
- 2:34:33Speaker 1: you think that was intentional? It felt like it. I
- 2:34:36Speaker 1: think you know when the nip is out. I mean,
- 2:34:39Speaker 1: you should. You've got to have the awareness to know
- 2:34:41Speaker 1: that the nip is everywhere. You've got to keep the
- 2:34:44Speaker 1: nip in. It's everywhere?
- 2:34:46Speaker 12: If it's out, it's everywhere. Because everyone's seeing it. I
- 2:34:49Speaker 12: think we can all be on the same page here.
- 2:34:51Speaker 12: No one wants to see the nip. Keep the nip in.
- 2:34:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:34:54Speaker 1: Carlos, put it away.
- 2:34:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:34:56Speaker 1: But let me get those shoes off you. There are
- 2:34:59Speaker 1: children watching. Those are unreleased. Do you watch tennis? Will
- 2:35:02Speaker 1: you watch like a U.S.
- 2:35:03Speaker 2: Open? Yeah.
- 2:35:03Speaker 1: You've attended the event.
- 2:35:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:35:05Speaker 1: I like tennis. I watched with great interest this match
- 2:35:09Speaker 1: today that he just won. But you don't watch golf
- 2:35:11Speaker 1: at all? No, I don't.
- 2:35:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:35:15Speaker 5: No.
- 2:35:15Speaker 1: All right. I like sports that require athleticism. Let's get
- 2:35:20Speaker 1: you on a golf course. No, thank you. Yeah, that's
- 2:35:24Speaker 1: what I thought. Mr. Extroverted extrovert.
- 2:35:28Speaker 12: So, but you're also the type of guy you don't
- 2:35:30Speaker 12: want to, you do.
- 2:35:31Speaker 1: You don't want to do the thing that you're not
- 2:35:32Speaker 1: good at, right? Oh yeah. I am the worst of those.
- 2:35:36Speaker 1: I'm trying to be, cause I'm, if I'm not good
- 2:35:37Speaker 1: at something, that thing is the problem. Not me. I see. Yeah.
- 2:35:42Speaker 12: We've run into an issue that we share now and
- 2:35:44Speaker 12: I'm trying to be so much better.
- 2:35:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:35:46Speaker 12: Like I, Of all the things that Mormons do well,
- 2:35:50Speaker 12: dancing at weddings sober is the most amazing part of
- 2:35:53Speaker 12: that culture.
- 2:35:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:35:54Speaker 12: You go to a Mormon wedding, they are dancing all night,
- 2:35:57Speaker 12: and they are sober.
- 2:35:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:35:59Speaker 1: Dancing sober sounds terrifying to me. I don't mind a dance. Sober?
- 2:36:02Speaker 1: I'm always sober. You can dance. I'm a pretty good dancer. Okay.
- 2:36:09Speaker 1: I'm going to need to see proof. This is a
- 2:36:11Speaker 1: Vince Vaughn in Wedding Crasher situation. I'm being doubted. I'm
- 2:36:14Speaker 1: a phenomenal dancer. You're Christopher Walken here. You and I
- 2:36:17Speaker 1: both know that I'm a phenomenal dancer.
- 2:36:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:36:19Speaker 1: Where is she? Still in the house? Yeah.
- 2:36:22Speaker 2: Wow.
- 2:36:22Speaker 1: That's peak Vince Vaughn, by the way.
- 2:36:24Speaker 12: I would need video evidence because I wouldn't describe you
- 2:36:28Speaker 12: as an elegant mover.
- 2:36:30Speaker 1: No, I'm not an elegant mover, but I have rhythm.
- 2:36:32Speaker 1: You have rhythm. And I've got cakes. I have a
- 2:36:35Speaker 1: large rear end. So.
- 2:36:36Speaker 2: Oh.
- 2:36:37Speaker 1: It helps you dance. Did you say cakes?
- 2:36:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:36:39Speaker 1: Is that a term for the glutes? It is now.
- 2:36:41Speaker 1: I did not know that. You're welcome. Well, so dancing,
- 2:36:46Speaker 1: I mean, look, I say this humbly. I actually am
- 2:36:51Speaker 1: an excellent dancer. Okay. No, you're not. Because you don't
- 2:36:53Speaker 1: like to do it. Well, it's awkward. Like at weddings,
- 2:36:57Speaker 1: you need a little courage. I'm always impressed when people
- 2:36:59Speaker 1: are able to do that. Unencumbered. Karaoke is the same. Okay, yeah.
- 2:37:06Speaker 12: Look, I've been known to make grown men cry while
- 2:37:09Speaker 12: singing I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys.
- 2:37:11Speaker 1: I hit the notes. I hit the high notes. I
- 2:37:14Speaker 1: can harmonize. He's been called the songbird of our generation,
- 2:37:18Speaker 1: Spence Checkers. Some people have said that. I wouldn't go
- 2:37:20Speaker 1: that far. Singing and dancing.
- 2:37:22Speaker 12: Okay, so besides golf, give me something that you're bad
- 2:37:25Speaker 12: at that you won't do.
- 2:37:28Speaker 1: Uh anything musical i don't have any musical talent at
- 2:37:31Speaker 1: all you can dance but you can't sing or play
- 2:37:33Speaker 1: an instrument i can't sing i can't play an instrument
- 2:37:35Speaker 1: can you rap i can't well james get a beat
- 2:37:38Speaker 1: i can rap along i can rap along with something
- 2:37:42Speaker 1: see if we can get a beat, go and see
- 2:37:44Speaker 1: if Sean freestyle for us. Yeah, no, I just, any
- 2:37:47Speaker 1: activity that I'm like, uh, you know, like board games,
- 2:37:50Speaker 1: how everyone just loves to like, Oh, settlers of Catan,
- 2:37:53Speaker 1: let's go. I don't have the patience to get like
- 2:37:57Speaker 1: good at or learn that thing. So I'm just like, no,
- 2:38:00Speaker 1: that is bad because I don't have an, I don't
- 2:38:04Speaker 1: have a knack for it.
- 2:38:05Speaker 3: Trivia.
- 2:38:07Speaker 1: I'm good at trivia.
- 2:38:07Speaker 12: I would think you, you have a tremendous amount of
- 2:38:09Speaker 12: knowledge about the weirdest things I have.
- 2:38:11Speaker 1: It's like a wide and a shallow.
- 2:38:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:38:15Speaker 1: I don't know how to actually do anything in life,
- 2:38:19Speaker 1: but I know fun facts about everything.
- 2:38:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:38:21Speaker 12: I've always been impressed with some like your knowledge of
- 2:38:27Speaker 12: fantasy books and films.
- 2:38:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:38:29Speaker 5: Great.
- 2:38:30Speaker 1: You'll drop references. I'm like, what is that? Harry Potter.
- 2:38:35Speaker 1: And is it, One of the other ones, Game of Thrones,
- 2:38:40Speaker 1: Star Wars. I love that you have a hard time
- 2:38:42Speaker 1: even coming up with what the other ones might be.
- 2:38:44Speaker 1: Lord of the Rings. There it is. Never seen a
- 2:38:46Speaker 1: minute of any of those films.
- 2:38:47Speaker 7: What?
- 2:38:47Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:38:48Speaker 1: Never. You read the books, though. Obviously. No. That type
- 2:38:52Speaker 1: of stuff, it is completely uninteresting. Okay, so how you
- 2:38:57Speaker 1: feel about... No. I feel about golf. I have an
- 2:39:02Speaker 1: active imagination. No, you don't. Yes, I do. You hate
- 2:39:04Speaker 1: things that are imaginary. I hate things that are weird
- 2:39:06Speaker 1: and dorky.
- 2:39:07Speaker 7: No, no, no.
- 2:39:08Speaker 1: You can't call them weird and dorky.
- 2:39:10Speaker 7: They are mainstream.
- 2:39:11Speaker 1: They're mainstream pop culture now. They're not even weird and
- 2:39:14Speaker 1: dorky anymore. It's my opinion.
- 2:39:16Speaker 12: I went to Comic-Con and had to publicly apologize to
- 2:39:21Speaker 12: Gundam the Robot.
- 2:39:23Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:39:24Speaker 12: So I thought Comic-Con... I didn't know what it was. Kurt,
- 2:39:27Speaker 12: our sales guy was at the old city. He's like,
- 2:39:29Speaker 12: I sold the remote. You're going to comic-con.
- 2:39:30Speaker 1: I'm like, all right.
- 2:39:31Speaker 12: So what I thought that was when I walked in
- 2:39:34Speaker 12: was like mascots dress up for children.
- 2:39:38Speaker 1: I had no idea that adults.
- 2:39:41Speaker 12: Go get costumes and go to an event and like
- 2:39:45Speaker 12: kick it with each other.
- 2:39:46Speaker 1: It's like cosplay, sick one, bro. Like I didn't know
- 2:39:49Speaker 1: that was.
- 2:39:49Speaker 12: So there are these kids around and this dude takes
- 2:39:52Speaker 12: his helmet off. I'm like, I'm thinking mascot here, like
- 2:39:56Speaker 12: the jazz bear would never take his head off.
- 2:39:58Speaker 1: And I'm like, hey, tell the robot dude to put
- 2:40:00Speaker 1: his helmet on. There are kids over here.
- 2:40:03Speaker 12: And he went and complained to the organizers. He's like, hey,
- 2:40:07Speaker 12: that radio guy made fun of me. And so during
- 2:40:10Speaker 12: the break, the organizer came over.
- 2:40:12Speaker 7: He's like, hey.
- 2:40:14Speaker 12: Just do me a favor and apologize to Gundam the robot.
- 2:40:16Speaker 12: I was like, say that sentence one more time.
- 2:40:19Speaker 1: Yeah, you should. Well, and then it dawned on me.
- 2:40:21Speaker 12: I'm like, this isn't an event for children to come
- 2:40:24Speaker 12: see their favorite characters in person. These grownups are here
- 2:40:32Speaker 12: dressed as their favorite whatever, and they're just kicking it
- 2:40:35Speaker 12: with each other.
- 2:40:37Speaker 1: I didn't know that was a thing. Well, it is.
- 2:40:39Speaker 1: Not for me.
- 2:40:40Speaker 12: But for other people. Golf is for me, not for you.
- 2:40:43Speaker 12: You hate imagination, and those people like it. That area of...
- 2:40:47Speaker 12: Creativity intimidates me. You don't like it. No, I'm very
- 2:40:51Speaker 12: creative with a three-wood in my hand. But that area
- 2:40:53Speaker 12: of creativity is nothing that interests me.
- 2:40:56Speaker 1: Imagination, fiction. But I am thrilled that it interests you.
- 2:40:59Speaker 1: Lights are fancy. You're just not on board. I can
- 2:41:02Speaker 1: be whimsical if I need to. I have whimsy, Sean.
- 2:41:05Speaker 1: There's no whimsy about you. There is whimsy inside of me.
- 2:41:09Speaker 5: None.
- 2:41:09Speaker 1: I'm sorry. You have many redeeming qualities. Whimsy is not one.
- 2:41:13Speaker 1: I can be whimsical if I need to be. No,
- 2:41:15Speaker 1: you can't. I have some epic Halloween costumes that would
- 2:41:18Speaker 1: prove you wrong.
- 2:41:18Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:41:19Speaker 1: We're going to do a whimsy test tomorrow during crosstalk.
- 2:41:23Speaker 1: Do you have access to a whimsy test? I'm going
- 2:41:25Speaker 1: to find one. Okay.
- 2:41:26Speaker 2: All right.
- 2:41:26Speaker 1: I look forward to that. Stay tuned for The Drive
- 2:41:29Speaker 1: with Spence Jackets. That's it for The Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:41:32Speaker 1: We'll do it again tomorrow on ESPN 700, 92.1 FM.
