- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Beaumontie Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:19Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. It is Time Machine Tuesdays this week with
- 0:26Speaker 1: the homie Joel from Missouri City. Now, right fast before we,
- 0:29Speaker 1: you know, You.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Just couldn't wait.
- 0:34Speaker 3: You just couldn't wait.
- 0:35Speaker 2: That's my greeting.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I was going, okay, all right, let me explain something
- 0:38Speaker 1: to the people right fast, and then we'll get back
- 0:40Speaker 1: to what just happened.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So we're doing something new.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Every Tuesday will now be Time Machine Tuesdays, where we
- 0:48Speaker 1: are going to look back. In time, in history, could
- 0:51Speaker 1: be sports history, could be regular history, could be music history.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Who's to say? But on Tuesdays, we're going.
- 0:56Speaker 1: To give you guys a chance to kind of look
- 0:58Speaker 1: back at different things, put some stuff in context.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Sometimes it'll be a book, for example.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Our buddy Howard Bryan has a book coming out called
- 1:05Speaker 1: Kings and Pawns about Jackie Robinson and Paul Robeson. We'll
- 1:08Speaker 1: do that as a Time Machine Tuesday, for example. So
- 1:10Speaker 1: we try to, you know, try new things out. Basically,
- 1:13Speaker 1: now that we go on to four days a week,
- 1:15Speaker 1: It's important to be consistent in what we're doing. And
- 1:18Speaker 1: this allows us to be more consistent. This also allows
- 1:20Speaker 1: us some flexibility. There are also weeks where we take
- 1:23Speaker 1: some vacation. Y'all might still have some content out here.
- 1:26Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? So all I'm saying is
- 1:29Speaker 2: you're welcome.
- 1:33Speaker 3: That's nice of you. That's nice of you to give
- 1:35Speaker 3: the people more of what they wanted.
- 1:36Speaker 1: All I'm saying is they ain't paying no extra. You
- 1:38Speaker 1: understand what I'm saying?
- 1:39Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 1:40Speaker 2: It's free.
- 1:40Speaker 3: It is free.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Somebody might, but it ain't going to be y'all, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: I'm doing it for you. Ergo, therefore, you know, that's
- 1:48Speaker 1: how that goes. So, that's how we're doing this with
- 1:51Speaker 1: Time Machine Tuesdays. Speaking of the Time Machine, you guys
- 1:54Speaker 1: on audio did not witness what just happened, but I
- 1:58Speaker 1: mentioned Joe from Missouri City, a.k.a. Joel Anderson of the ringer,
- 2:03Speaker 1: check him out on the ringer tailgate show, the blackest
- 2:05Speaker 1: college football show ever paid for by white people.
- 2:09Speaker 2: And that is not an exaggeration.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I don't, I don't think anybody's ever paid for two
- 2:13Speaker 1: thirds black on a college football show.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Do your two last dudes ever talk about college football?
- 2:18Speaker 1: I mean, I imagine they did every now and then,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but it wasn't a college football show.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Like, like it's a little different, but anyway, I know
- 2:27Speaker 1: this about Joel. And apparently it's become a thing on
- 2:31Speaker 1: that show because Van Lathan and Tate Frazier are every
- 2:34Speaker 1: day getting to know a little bit what we've already
- 2:37Speaker 1: known for a long time, which is they only made
- 2:40Speaker 1: one of this guy, right?
- 2:40Speaker 2: So anyway, Joel is adamant.
- 2:46Speaker 1: That he invented when one takes his palm and points
- 2:52Speaker 1: it toward the sky and raises it up, to indicate
- 2:58Speaker 1: raising the roof yeah joel addison is insistent that he
- 3:02Speaker 1: is the one who invented it and now that that
- 3:04Speaker 1: motion has become an antiquity an anachronism he has now
- 3:08Speaker 1: decided to reclaim it yeah and when you say it's
- 3:12Speaker 1: joel now joel is going to raise the roof like it's.
- 3:18Speaker 4: 1997 that's right that's right yeah man i mean things
- 3:21Speaker 4: things that are old become new all the time what's
- 3:23Speaker 4: the problem.
- 3:25Speaker 2: You're forcing the issue. That's what the problem is.
- 3:27Speaker 4: This is the way I greet people. People know when
- 3:29Speaker 4: I come on that that's what I do.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I know this is not how you greet people.
- 3:35Speaker 3: It's like a rap ad.
- 3:37Speaker 1: The reason I know this isn't how you just greet
- 3:39Speaker 1: people all the time and how I know it's new
- 3:41Speaker 1: is that when we did a live show in New
- 3:44Speaker 1: York together, you definitely did not do that when I
- 3:46Speaker 1: introduced you because I know if you had done that,
- 3:49Speaker 1: they would have thrown tomatoes at you. They already threw
- 3:52Speaker 1: tomatoes at you at your long-winded, convoluted explanation for how
- 3:57Speaker 1: you hated all these things about Nas and then rapped
- 3:59Speaker 1: it with, but Nas is my favorite rapper.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Wait, hold on. I did not say that I hated Nas.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I didn't say you hated Nas, but you had a
- 4:05Speaker 1: whole lot of things you didn't like about Nas. And
- 4:07Speaker 1: you had perplexed people in the front row. And then
- 4:09Speaker 1: at the end, you said, but Nas is my favorite rapper.
- 4:12Speaker 4: Yeah, because the thing was I was saying is that
- 4:14Speaker 4: I probably enjoy more Rick Ross albums than Nas albums.
- 4:18Speaker 3: And I don't think Rick Ross is a better rapper
- 4:20Speaker 3: than Nas.
- 4:21Speaker 4: I don't want to recreate that because, you know, the
- 4:23Speaker 4: funny thing about that night is that it was one
- 4:25Speaker 4: of those times I was like, man, I really do
- 4:27Speaker 4: not have the audience tonight.
- 4:28Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 4:29Speaker 4: I was just like, I'm saying things and it just
- 4:31Speaker 4: kind of settled over the audience.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah. We also were getting heckled by 2Ray.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Man, your boy, man. Yeah, Trey was out there heckling.
- 4:41Speaker 2: He was heckling me. No, he was trying to heckle me, too.
- 4:45Speaker 1: It all got weird when I stopped and said, nobody
- 4:47Speaker 1: paid to see you, brother.
- 4:48Speaker 2: But anyway, Time Machine Tuesday.
- 4:52Speaker 1: We're going to talk about something that happened.
- 4:56Speaker 2: 20 years ago this week.
- 4:58Speaker 1: I believe it was 20 years ago yesterday, 20 years ago,
- 5:00Speaker 1: January the 5th, I believe, the year of our Lord, 2006.
- 5:05Speaker 1: at the Rose Bowl while we were still playing with
- 5:07Speaker 1: the somewhat sacrilegious idea of nighttime Rose Bowl games. This
- 5:12Speaker 1: was the BCS championship game at the Rose Bowl, but
- 5:15Speaker 1: it was the last time or the last year that
- 5:17Speaker 1: the BCS operated where they used the actual bowl rather
- 5:22Speaker 1: than it's the BCS championship game at.
- 5:24Speaker 2: The site of the Fiesta Bowl.
- 5:26Speaker 1: This was the Rose Bowl, January 2006, USC versus Texas,
- 5:33Speaker 1: and I can't think, and we got so many things
- 5:36Speaker 1: that we can set up in this, right? And there
- 5:37Speaker 1: are levels we're going to try to do this as
- 5:39Speaker 1: best as we can in an hour, right? It's the most,
- 5:42Speaker 1: at least for me, and you tell me if I'm wrong,
- 5:44Speaker 1: it's the most anticipated championship game that I could think of.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I honestly think ever.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Now, I don't have the greatest memory of, say, 1986,
- 5:53Speaker 1: January 1987 Fiesta Bowl, for example, or some others that
- 5:57Speaker 1: people could point to. But my recollection of that time,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and maybe it's just because I was rooting for Texas
- 6:02Speaker 1: at the time, but it was very clear to me
- 6:04Speaker 1: very early in that season, after Texas beat Ohio State
- 6:07Speaker 1: at the horseshoe, which is... Um, Vince Young legend game
- 6:11Speaker 1: number two out of Vince Young legend, three Vince Young
- 6:14Speaker 1: legend games, but that's Vince Young legend game number two.
- 6:17Speaker 2: After that game, to me, it seemed very clear.
- 6:19Speaker 1: This is going to be Texas and USC playing for
- 6:22Speaker 1: a national championship, USC playing for their third national championship.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And Texas, college football is a great underachiever.
- 6:30Speaker 2: In a number of ways.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Four years or the fourth season after bringing in one
- 6:34Speaker 1: of the greatest recruiting classes of all time with Vince
- 6:36Speaker 1: Young having finally started to establish himself on the scene.
- 6:40Speaker 2: This was the game that we were going to get.
- 6:43Speaker 4: You probably pissed off a lot of LSU fans by
- 6:46Speaker 4: saying it was their third straight national championship they were.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Playing for, but that's fine.
- 6:50Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. But the thing is, and I can't remember...
- 6:54Speaker 4: this was the, they went one and two wire to wire.
- 6:58Speaker 4: Like they started the season, preseason one and two and
- 7:01Speaker 4: ended the season is one and two. And so that
- 7:04Speaker 4: in and of itself is sort of incredible because think
- 7:07Speaker 4: about how many times like a team, you know, take
- 7:09Speaker 4: a loss early in the year and they play their
- 7:11Speaker 4: way back up.
- 7:12Speaker 3: And I think that's what, when you talked about.
- 7:13Speaker 4: The Ohio State game, because to your point, Texas did
- 7:17Speaker 4: not really win games like that at that point in
- 7:19Speaker 4: the program history, right? Like they, that was a game
- 7:22Speaker 4: that you kind of, even though they were number two,
- 7:24Speaker 4: you expected them to kind of go up to Columbus.
- 7:26Speaker 3: And lose that game.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Well, hold on, to be fair, they didn't play games
- 7:29Speaker 2: like that.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Fair point, yeah.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Like the big.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Non-conference, that era is kind of a return to a
- 7:36Speaker 1: certain intersectional football game type of thing that you did
- 7:39Speaker 1: not see.
- 7:39Speaker 2: But this was a home-and-home Texas-Ohio State, with Ohio State
- 7:42Speaker 2: also at the top of their game. Right, right.
- 7:45Speaker 4: They were number four when coming into that game, right?
- 7:47Speaker 4: And so, yeah, that game was very highly anticipated, very
- 7:51Speaker 4: similar to the Texas-Ohio State game this year. But yeah,
- 7:54Speaker 4: I can't think of another time when all season it
- 7:58Speaker 4: was setting up for us. Like, man, I hope they
- 8:00Speaker 4: don't stumble. I hope they don't lose. Because you wanted
- 8:03Speaker 4: to see, okay, like if USC... I mean, I think
- 8:05Speaker 4: the thing is at that point, it was more about
- 8:07Speaker 4: can USC win its third straight national championship than can
- 8:10Speaker 4: Texas beat them? But it was like, if there's a
- 8:12Speaker 4: team out there that can beat USC, it's probably them
- 8:16Speaker 4: boys down there in Austin.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 8:17Speaker 1: And the national discourse around this was absolutely... usc and
- 8:22Speaker 1: their run at a third national championship by that time
- 8:26Speaker 1: they have won 20 something games to start the year
- 8:28Speaker 1: i think it was in the early 30s by the
- 8:30Speaker 1: time we get around to the game but the part
- 8:34Speaker 1: that i think would be interesting for younger people like
- 8:37Speaker 1: those who were not around or truly like able to
- 8:40Speaker 1: grasp what was going on in that time is usc
- 8:45Speaker 1: is usc has an argument for being the program of
- 8:47Speaker 1: the 1970s right it's really between usc and alabama I
- 8:52Speaker 1: would say it's the two schools that we really look
- 8:53Speaker 1: at as the two dominant powers. USC, to me, and
- 8:56Speaker 1: I think that this is often lost USC is what
- 9:00Speaker 1: Miami was like before Miami became Miami. USC in the
- 9:05Speaker 1: 1970s was that they had this incredible comparative advantage, which was,
- 9:08Speaker 1: you know, over the course of these decades, all these
- 9:11Speaker 1: black people.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Moved out here.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yes.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And they moved out here and it's 12 month a
- 9:17Speaker 1: year football weather. And California is very similar to think
- 9:21Speaker 1: with Miami that gets lost is Miami isn't really close
- 9:24Speaker 1: to anything other than Miami.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Right. Right. Like it's a somewhat isolated location. all these
- 9:31Speaker 2: dudes out here in LA, right? Of a particular ambition, right?
- 9:35Speaker 1: If you have read The Warmth of Other Suns and
- 9:37Speaker 1: know anything about that first generation, there's a selection bias
- 9:41Speaker 1: to who the people were that decided, I'm going to
- 9:42Speaker 1: pack my shit up and go to LA and make
- 9:44Speaker 1: this happen, right?
- 9:45Speaker 2: They were basically immigrants.
- 9:48Speaker 1: Yes, but I say I bristle at what people talk
- 9:50Speaker 1: about that idea of an immigrant mentality where I'm like,
- 9:52Speaker 1: do you know what our people have had to do
- 9:54Speaker 1: to get anywhere, right? But moving to California is like
- 9:58Speaker 1: moving to Mars in a lot of ways when people
- 10:01Speaker 1: did that, right? This is the progeny of those people,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and USC had access to all of them. And the
- 10:08Speaker 1: school was right smack dab in the middle of the hood.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Right in the hood, man.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And I mean, the thing is, too, is that with USC,
- 10:16Speaker 4: so they had the comparative advantage of that they were
- 10:18Speaker 4: taking black people when a lot of other schools just
- 10:21Speaker 4: were not, or black people had been like, is it
- 10:23Speaker 4: okay for me to go to school here?
- 10:25Speaker 3: Right?
- 10:25Speaker 4: So, cause like USC was, if, if I recall, and you,
- 10:28Speaker 4: you tell me if I'm wrong here, USC was one
- 10:30Speaker 4: of the first places that had like nationally prominent black athletes.
- 10:34Speaker 4: I mean, OJ Simpson, you know, Marcus Allen, you know,
- 10:39Speaker 4: Ronnie Lott, guys like that.
- 10:41Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 10:42Speaker 4: And you tell me, I had a very specific visage.
- 10:45Speaker 4: There was like the USC black guy who was very
- 10:47Speaker 4: handsome and, very chiseled and had kind of like the
- 10:49Speaker 4: mini fro.
- 10:50Speaker 3: It wasn't always a fro.
- 10:52Speaker 5: OJ.
- 10:52Speaker 3: OJ. OJ. Yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 2: OJ.
- 10:53Speaker 1: OJ.
- 10:54Speaker 3: OJ is a.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Big deal in this discussion though. Cause OJ was that dude.
- 10:57Speaker 3: OJ was the prototype. OJ was the prototype.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Like he went out there, he was, you know, I mean,
- 11:02Speaker 4: I hate to say it this way, very well-spoken, right?
- 11:05Speaker 4: He appealed, and he intentionally tried to appeal to white
- 11:09Speaker 4: fans and white audiences. And so that was a, that
- 11:11Speaker 4: was the archetype. And so when other guys came back
- 11:13Speaker 4: out there, they were like, okay, like we can see
- 11:15Speaker 4: that we can be out here. We can thrive and
- 11:17Speaker 4: we can be, you know, we can be ourselves essentially,
- 11:19Speaker 4: but they all still kind of went from the same thing.
- 11:21Speaker 4: Cause I, again, when you look at Marcus Allen and
- 11:23Speaker 4: these guys, it's like, Oh, they look kind of the
- 11:25Speaker 4: same too.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Let me explain something to you right fast.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Also for people, when I talk about this in the
- 11:30Speaker 1: context of Miami and like having the talent, Marcus Allen
- 11:34Speaker 1: went to USC.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Oh man.
- 11:36Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:37Speaker 2: As a defensive back. Yeah. Okay? Like, the plan.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Marcus Allen was not supposed to play running back. He
- 11:44Speaker 1: was supposed to be a DB. The thing was, they
- 11:48Speaker 1: had Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, and Joey Browner.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Yeah, man. Already.
- 11:55Speaker 2: And by the way, Anthony Munoz was blocking. Anthony Munoz.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Shout out to La Raza. See what I'm saying?
- 12:02Speaker 1: Charles White was also a player, like, Heisman Trophy winner
- 12:05Speaker 1: Charles White, also on the roster. Like, They just had it, right?
- 12:11Speaker 1: And then it became a similar situation to what we
- 12:13Speaker 1: saw with a few other schools that it's happened to
- 12:16Speaker 1: the Big Ten as the 70s and 80s came around
- 12:19Speaker 1: when other people started getting not just black people, but
- 12:21Speaker 1: also more black people. Then all of a sudden, you
- 12:25Speaker 1: didn't have your comparative advantage anymore. And so USC was
- 12:29Speaker 1: still pretty good through the 80s, but not what it
- 12:31Speaker 1: was in the 70s. And then in the 90s, the
- 12:35Speaker 1: wheels kind of came off.
- 12:37Speaker 4: They had that one Keyshawn Johnson year. And this is
- 12:42Speaker 4: what I also want to talk about too, because Keyshawn
- 12:44Speaker 4: was sort of a phenomenon too, right? Like that was,
- 12:46Speaker 4: it was again, kind of a throwback to that old
- 12:48Speaker 4: LA guy that is like nationally famous. And there's a
- 12:52Speaker 4: clip of Keyshawn Johnson talking about his draft day party
- 12:55Speaker 4: and everybody who showed up. And it's like, you know, Snoop,
- 12:58Speaker 4: like all these like, you know, famous hip hop artists
- 13:01Speaker 4: and and actresses anyways anyway so yeah but they were
- 13:04Speaker 4: not if you were if you were looking at usc
- 13:06Speaker 4: in 1994 when they played texas tech in the cotton
- 13:09Speaker 4: bowl right you'd be like what's the big deal with
- 13:11Speaker 4: usc like you wouldn't kind of understand it.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Would be like the green bay packers were yeah until
- 13:15Speaker 1: the far thing got going like what do you mean this.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Is like magic mckowski yeah yeah but it.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Was like they they were like the yankees were like
- 13:23Speaker 1: this for stretch too where they were absolutely like if
- 13:25Speaker 1: you were of a certain age, I don't even really
- 13:27Speaker 1: understand what it is that y'all talk about. Like USC
- 13:30Speaker 1: might've been what Nebraska is now. Right.
- 13:33Speaker 2: To kids like, Oh, this was a thing. Oh, okay.
- 13:36Speaker 1: Um, but they wound up with this crazy coaching search
- 13:38Speaker 1: where nobody wanted to take the job and they had
- 13:41Speaker 1: to settle for Pete Carroll and it took Pete Carroll
- 13:43Speaker 1: about half a year to get it going.
- 13:46Speaker 2: And then after that, it was on and popping, right?
- 13:49Speaker 1: They went to the orange bowl in 2002 and just
- 13:52Speaker 1: beat the doors off of Iowa and Palmer. Heisman Trophy winner.
- 13:57Speaker 1: Troy Palamalu was on. That was the first time I
- 13:59Speaker 1: saw Troy Palamalu and I was like, oh my God.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Right? Because they still have some guys because it was
- 14:03Speaker 2: still USC. It was still LA. They could still get
- 14:06Speaker 2: some cats. But in 2003, they split a national championship.
- 14:11Speaker 3: That's right.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Matt Leiner was the successor to Carson Palmer and he
- 14:15Speaker 1: was the quarterback.
- 14:17Speaker 2: But Lindale White.
- 14:18Speaker 1: And Reggie Bush both showed up on team that already
- 14:21Speaker 1: had dudes. They had Dudes on defense in particular. They
- 14:26Speaker 1: had dudes, dudes, dudes.
- 14:29Speaker 2: And.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Everything was different. Then you get to the 2004 season.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Okay.
- 14:33Speaker 1: And that's the year that Matt Leinart won the Heisman trophy.
- 14:36Speaker 1: And look, they were so good that it's a Pete
- 14:38Speaker 1: Carroll offense, man. So they just really kind of running
- 14:41Speaker 1: the ball. Oh yeah.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Like it wasn't anything fancy. It was like Miami.
- 14:44Speaker 1: It wasn't anything fancy. Florida state was the same way.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Our players are just so much better than your players.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And by the way, our second team players also so
- 14:55Speaker 1: much better than your first team players.
- 14:58Speaker 2: And they ran through America.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Only Aaron Rodgers and Marshawn Lynch gave them a challenge.
- 15:04Speaker 1: They went and played against the Oklahoma team in the
- 15:07Speaker 1: Orange Bowl that had the year before Heisman Trophy winner
- 15:10Speaker 1: and a freshman, Adrian Peterson, who ran for like 1900 yards.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And brother, it didn't matter. They beat the dog shit
- 15:17Speaker 2: out of them.
- 15:17Speaker 4: They broke that edition of Oklahoma. Like, Oklahoma was really
- 15:22Speaker 4: good for those years after because, you know, Bob Stoops
- 15:24Speaker 4: was a good coach.
- 15:24Speaker 1: I mean, we thought the 0-3 Oklahoma team at points
- 15:26Speaker 1: was the best college football team of all time.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I definitely thought that. And I didn't think it. I
- 15:32Speaker 4: was right there at that.
- 15:32Speaker 2: You were there when they beat Texas A & M
- 15:34Speaker 2: 77 to nothing.
- 15:35Speaker 4: When they beat Texas A & M 77. But then
- 15:36Speaker 4: I was at the Big 12 championship game in Kansas
- 15:39Speaker 4: when they lost to Kansas State.
- 15:41Speaker 3: And they lost 35-7. And it was like, what the
- 15:44Speaker 3: fuck just happened here?
- 15:45Speaker 4: But up until then. And then I was just like,
- 15:47Speaker 4: that must be a mulligan. They're still going to be
- 15:50Speaker 4: the national champion. And they went down to New Orleans
- 15:52Speaker 4: in the Sugar Bowl and lost to LSU. And that
- 15:54Speaker 4: was a half champion. You know, they split the championship
- 15:56Speaker 4: with USC that year.
- 15:56Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 15:58Speaker 2: But USC ran through that 0-4 season.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Yeah, man. Look at these scores.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:05Speaker 2: 49-0, 42-10.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yeah, and look, they.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Had some close games, right? Because they were still a
- 16:10Speaker 1: really young team. But the big thing is, they came
- 16:13Speaker 1: back the next year, and they were the biggest deal
- 16:16Speaker 1: in sports.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Like, the idea that they could win a.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Third national championship, that Matt Leinart, they told us that
- 16:23Speaker 1: he would be the number one pick. Clearly, he would not,
- 16:25Speaker 1: because he came back to school. He came back, and
- 16:28Speaker 1: then Reggie Bush, I can't explain to you. Like, Reggie Bush,
- 16:32Speaker 1: to me, Is maybe the last guy. I feel like
- 16:36Speaker 1: you tell me if I'm wrong here. All his fame
- 16:38Speaker 1: is as a result of being a college football player.
- 16:40Speaker 1: I think there's like a Kardashian element of fame that
- 16:43Speaker 1: maybe adds to that. But his athletic fame is because
- 16:46Speaker 1: of what a big deal Reggie Bush was at USC.
- 16:49Speaker 1: Nothing he did as an NFL player made him more
- 16:51Speaker 1: famous than he was walking into the league.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Was the Kardashian moment at USC or a little bit after?
- 16:57Speaker 2: No, it was after, but I think the fact that
- 17:00Speaker 2: that was even possible.
- 17:01Speaker 3: Possible, right. The fact that that was on the board.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Look, he was the famous one when that started. She
- 17:10Speaker 1: got more fame off of him than at first, at least,
- 17:14Speaker 1: that he got off of her as a result of that.
- 17:16Speaker 1: But I don't think it's possible for a football team
- 17:19Speaker 1: or a football player to be as famous as USC
- 17:23Speaker 1: was in 05 and as Reggie Bush was in particular. Like,
- 17:26Speaker 1: we don't care about coaches as much as we used
- 17:28Speaker 1: to care about coaches. We don't care about players as
- 17:32Speaker 1: much as we used to care about players.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Like, none of that lands like it did then.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Do you think Jaden Daniels is anywhere near as famous
- 17:38Speaker 4: as Reggie Bush.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Or Fernando Mendoza? Like, none of those guys, right?
- 17:41Speaker 4: Like, maybe the last Heisman that resonated that rang out
- 17:44Speaker 4: was like Manziel, right?
- 17:46Speaker 5: Yes.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Well, no, well, James Winston. Jameis Winston got really famous,
- 17:50Speaker 2: and then it got weird.
- 17:51Speaker 3: That's right.
- 17:52Speaker 2: That's right.
- 17:53Speaker 3: That's right.
- 17:53Speaker 1: Even Baker Mayfield, I don't feel like got this kind.
- 17:56Speaker 1: I don't think Joe Burrow got to be the kind
- 17:58Speaker 1: of famous that we're talking about with Reggie Bush.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Reggie Bush was famous like that before the Heisman.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 18:04Speaker 4: I mean, there were people that did not follow college
- 18:06Speaker 4: football who knew who Reggie Bush was, man.
- 18:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and guess what? Your girl was on that list.
- 18:11Speaker 5: Hey, man.
- 18:12Speaker 3: He was a very handsome guy, man.
- 18:14Speaker 2: But it was a whole nother thing, and he was.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Unreal to watch, right? He was.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Electric.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I make the argument that Reggie Bush was so unreal
- 18:25Speaker 1: that it hurt him in the NFL. He would have
- 18:28Speaker 1: been better if he was a little bit worse. Because
- 18:32Speaker 1: he was capable of doing those unreal things in college.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Them Tecmo Bowl runs where you start one side of the.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Field and you go all the way around to get back.
- 18:41Speaker 2: And the league, the league wasn't ready for that.
- 18:43Speaker 1: It took him a long time to figure out that
- 18:46Speaker 1: he couldn't do those things anymore. I, you know, this
- 18:50Speaker 1: is going to probably go back to people calling me
- 18:52Speaker 1: a hater, but I remember when he was going into
- 18:54Speaker 1: the league, I was like, I just don't see the
- 18:56Speaker 1: number two running back.
- 18:57Speaker 4: I just don't see a number two pick because he's
- 18:59Speaker 4: not going to be able to outrun people like that
- 19:00Speaker 4: in the NFL.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 19:02Speaker 4: You said I was, I was, because at the time
- 19:04Speaker 4: it was like, should the Texans take Reggie Bush number
- 19:07Speaker 4: one with the draft pick.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Right.
- 19:08Speaker 4: And it was like, I think they took Mario Williams
- 19:10Speaker 4: that year instead, but I was like, man, look, the
- 19:12Speaker 4: thing that the Texans should do is not worry about
- 19:14Speaker 4: no damn Reggie Bush, try to tank again next year
- 19:17Speaker 4: and get Adrian Peterson, who I thought was the running
- 19:19Speaker 4: back that they should take early in the draft.
- 19:20Speaker 3: But yeah, I thought Reggie Bush, again, electric. I kind of.
- 19:23Speaker 4: Compared him to like, it's not even fair to compare
- 19:26Speaker 4: him to Eric Metcalf because Eric Metcalf wasn't what Reggie
- 19:28Speaker 4: Bush was, but it was like that same kind of
- 19:30Speaker 4: like jitterbug style.
- 19:32Speaker 3: And I was like, that stuff has a limit in
- 19:33Speaker 3: the NFL.
- 19:34Speaker 1: But the thing about Reggie though is that, so- He
- 19:38Speaker 1: was not a jitterbug to me, right? He was a
- 19:41Speaker 1: wide receiver playing running back. right so like Eric Metcalf
- 19:46Speaker 1: was smaller right like I think if it was being
- 19:48Speaker 1: more shifty I put Percy Harvin a bit more in
- 19:51Speaker 1: that category Tavon Austin Tavon Austin you know is another
- 19:55Speaker 1: guy that we've Dexter McCluster like there's a there's a
- 19:58Speaker 1: whole bunch of those guys that you've just put all
- 20:00Speaker 1: over the place like I think that Reggie Bush and
- 20:02Speaker 1: Percy Harvin a bunch of those guys would be much
- 20:04Speaker 1: better now now that there's a different kind of creativity
- 20:07Speaker 1: like can you imagine somebody using Percy Harvin liked to
- 20:10Speaker 1: use Deebo Samuel.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Percy Harvin was a really good NFL player.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. But the league had not quite caught up
- 20:15Speaker 1: to what made them so dangerous.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Right. Put them in space, that kind of stuff.
- 20:19Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:19Speaker 5: Right.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Reggie Bush had, like, a wide receiver build. And then, like,
- 20:24Speaker 2: when you split him out wide, what made him so
- 20:26Speaker 2: scary was that he really did look like a wide receiver.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 2: You know, when he was doing it. But there... They
- 20:34Speaker 2: ain't really been one of those since that one, man.
- 20:36Speaker 2: That one right there, the Fresno State game, that was
- 20:40Speaker 2: so wild because, I don't know, did you watch that
- 20:42Speaker 2: game live?
- 20:43Speaker 3: Oh, hell yeah. I remember watching it that night. Absolutely.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And so what was so wild about it was if
- 20:46Speaker 1: you were on the East Coast, this game was like
- 20:48Speaker 1: a 7 o'clock Pacific kick. And this was back where
- 20:51Speaker 1: college football was what I really wrote about. So I
- 20:53Speaker 1: would just be up all night on Saturdays. And you
- 20:56Speaker 1: had to flip to one of the Fox, the regional
- 20:58Speaker 1: Fox Sports's to get it. Now, never mind the fact
- 21:01Speaker 1: that a side of things to come was that USC
- 21:04Speaker 1: had to play so hard in order to beat Fresno State.
- 21:06Speaker 4: Oh, they needed every bit of Reggie Bush's amazing night
- 21:09Speaker 4: that night to pull them off. They gave up 42
- 21:11Speaker 4: points to Fresno State in that game. And this is
- 21:14Speaker 4: David Carr. This isn't David Carr, Fresno State.
- 21:16Speaker 5: Right.
- 21:17Speaker 1: But see, and that was the thing that had happened
- 21:18Speaker 1: with USC is that they had gotten so big. But
- 21:21Speaker 1: what made them so good in 04 was the Pete
- 21:23Speaker 1: Carroll of it all, which was they were playing defense.
- 21:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 21:27Speaker 2: That 05 defense was really young.
- 21:28Speaker 1: It is the beginning of the 08 defense, which might
- 21:31Speaker 1: be the best college football defense that I have ever seen.
- 21:33Speaker 2: But the magnitude of what USC was was so giant.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Through that whole year that the whole story was, can
- 21:43Speaker 1: they three-peat, can they three-peat? And if you have watched
- 21:44Speaker 1: the 30 for 30 audit that was clearly produced by
- 21:47Speaker 1: USC guys, and they just act like Texas was like
- 21:51Speaker 1: some 3A team from across the state that they heard
- 21:55Speaker 1: about had this one really good dude on it.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Except I mentioned it leading up to this and talking
- 22:03Speaker 1: about the fact that Texas– And O2 had a recruiting
- 22:07Speaker 1: class that had like six five-star dudes.
- 22:09Speaker 2: They didn't all make it to the yard, but that's
- 22:10Speaker 2: not the point.
- 22:11Speaker 1: They brought in a bunch of dudes and had consistently
- 22:14Speaker 1: been bringing in a bunch of dudes that hadn't even
- 22:17Speaker 1: won a conference championship. But the year before, they only
- 22:20Speaker 1: lost one game. They won the Rose Bowl in Vince
- 22:24Speaker 1: Young Rose Bowl number one. That is the first of
- 22:26Speaker 1: the legendary Vince Young games.
- 22:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Was that one.
- 22:29Speaker 1: They brought not everybody back the next year, right? Like
- 22:31Speaker 1: they didn't bring back Cedric Benson. They didn't bring back
- 22:33Speaker 1: Derrick Johnson. But- Texas had a roster where I want
- 22:38Speaker 1: to say four of the five offensive linemen went to
- 22:40Speaker 1: the league. Tight end goes to the league. Jamal Charles
- 22:44Speaker 1: is third string running back. The fourth string running back
- 22:48Speaker 1: was Henry Melton who turned into a pro.
- 22:49Speaker 2: Bowl defensive lineman.
- 22:51Speaker 5: Yeah, right.
- 22:51Speaker 1: And he was, by the way, 270 pounds playing running
- 22:54Speaker 1: back and had double digit touchdowns.
- 22:57Speaker 2: In the course of that season.
- 22:57Speaker 1: They also had a dude named Ramaz Taylor that nobody
- 23:00Speaker 1: remembers because he knuckleheaded his way off.
- 23:03Speaker 2: The yard, but he was a beast.
- 23:05Speaker 3: Fast.
- 23:06Speaker 2: He was fast.
- 23:07Speaker 1: He had like 15 touchdowns that year in total.
- 23:10Speaker 2: They were loaded.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Then on defense, three of the four starting defensive linemen
- 23:14Speaker 1: were NFL guys. The linebacker, of course, went hitting on nothing,
- 23:19Speaker 1: but Aaron Ross, who wound up to have a very
- 23:21Speaker 1: good NFL career and was the Thorpe Award winner in 2006,
- 23:25Speaker 1: was the nickelback Yep.
- 23:26Speaker 2: In 2005. Right.
- 23:27Speaker 3: They had the Griffin boys. They had Huff.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Terrell Brown.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Terrell Brown. Yeah, man, I forgot about Terrell Brown, man.
- 23:35Speaker 3: He was so cold. Yeah, man.
- 23:37Speaker 4: They had kind of everything that they needed, man. Was
- 23:41Speaker 4: Rod Wright on that team?
- 23:43Speaker 2: Rod Wright was on that team, yeah.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Rod Wright was on that team.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, man.
- 23:46Speaker 3: Frank O'Kam.
- 23:47Speaker 1: It's literally one of the greatest college football teams of
- 23:50Speaker 1: all time.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Like, they went through that season. The only games they
- 23:55Speaker 1: played that were within single digits were the game at
- 23:58Speaker 1: Ohio State and the Rose Bowl.
- 24:00Speaker 3: That's right.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Every other game, they blew everything.
- 24:02Speaker 1: They won the Big 12 Championship 70-3, and they stopped
- 24:06Speaker 1: trying after the third quarter.
- 24:08Speaker 4: Man, somebody got to ask Joel Klatt about that day.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I don't remember seeing Joel Klatt talk about what happened
- 24:14Speaker 4: that day. But, I mean, yeah, man, they looked like–
- 24:17Speaker 4: I mean, they– I mean, they're clearly the best Texas
- 24:20Speaker 4: team of all time, right?
- 24:21Speaker 2: Yes.
- 24:21Speaker 4: But it was just sort of unreal because if you
- 24:25Speaker 4: had grown up in Texas and Texas was always letting
- 24:28Speaker 4: people down in the big game and it was like,
- 24:29Speaker 4: they got a little bit of talent, but they would
- 24:31Speaker 4: never show out like that.
- 24:33Speaker 3: They were never that kind of dominant. And so for
- 24:35Speaker 3: them to.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Be as good as they were at that time, it
- 24:38Speaker 4: was almost sort of surreal.
- 24:39Speaker 3: It's like, this can't be the Texas Longhorns. I've been
- 24:42Speaker 3: following my whole life.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Well, there's the other level too, which is the historical
- 24:47Speaker 1: importance of Mack Brown. In the history of Texas football
- 24:51Speaker 1: is he finally was able, I would say, to fully.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Integrate the program.
- 24:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Right. Like nobody.
- 24:59Speaker 1: The SWC was a race of teams to be the
- 25:01Speaker 1: last one to integrate. They all knew that they had
- 25:04Speaker 1: to do it. And they all wanted to be the
- 25:06Speaker 1: last one. And no school has ever been quite as
- 25:09Speaker 1: good on top to bottom as coming up with new
- 25:12Speaker 1: ways to keep black people out. Figuring out ways to
- 25:15Speaker 1: toss us out after we get there.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I mean, again, University of Texas came up with the
- 25:20Speaker 4: idea of standardized testing.
- 25:22Speaker 1: They opened the law school at Texas Southern so that
- 25:25Speaker 1: they wouldn't have to let no black people into the
- 25:27Speaker 1: law school at Texas.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Like this is, they were dedicated to this fact.
- 25:32Speaker 1: Now, because nobody likes John McAfee, he doesn't get enough
- 25:35Speaker 1: credit for this, but he also helped to begin this.
- 25:38Speaker 1: But the difference was McAfee had to overcome it.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Right. Mac, it feels like was.
- 25:42Speaker 1: The first guy to actually overcome the idea that like,
- 25:47Speaker 1: you don't really want to go to that racist-ass school, man.
- 25:50Speaker 2: I mean, the idea that Texas A & M had
- 25:52Speaker 2: overcome it.
- 25:55Speaker 1: The reason is very simple. Texas A & M didn't
- 25:57Speaker 1: have the luxury that Texas felt like they had about this.
- 25:59Speaker 1: So A & M had to do stuff like hire
- 26:01Speaker 1: Jackie Sherrill.
- 26:02Speaker 3: I was going to say, the Jackie Sherrill of it
- 26:04Speaker 3: all is what really brought it home.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Yes, but the fact that they were willing to do it.
- 26:08Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Look, those guys in that town were coming in being like, look,
- 26:12Speaker 2: if you're going to hire me, this is going to happen, right? Like,
- 26:15Speaker 2: like if you're not, if you're not with this, then,
- 26:18Speaker 2: you know, we're not.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Going to do this, but they had finally overcome a
- 26:22Speaker 1: bunch of that. Now, Mac, not a great coach, right? Like,
- 26:25Speaker 1: you know, after the whistle blows, not a great coach.
- 26:27Speaker 1: We all understand this, but they had dudes. And I
- 26:33Speaker 1: mentioned that because after, you know, coming up after the break,
- 26:37Speaker 1: we're going to get to what this episode is really
- 26:39Speaker 1: about because we have to give you all the background.
- 26:42Speaker 1: We have given you everything, except talking about the dude
- 26:46Speaker 1: that matters the most. And that is the man who
- 26:49Speaker 1: put up, quite possibly, the greatest performance in the history
- 26:51Speaker 1: of college football at that Rose Bowl. But do you
- 26:55Speaker 1: really understand the importance of Vince Young going into it?
- 26:58Speaker 1: This is where those of us from Houston will try

- 28:29Speaker 1: All right, we are back with Joel Anderson talking about the, well,
- 28:33Speaker 1: it's the Vince Young game. And now we can go
- 28:34Speaker 1: ahead and start calling it what it is at this point,
- 28:37Speaker 1: which is the Vince Young game, which was this close
- 28:39Speaker 1: to being the Lindell White game.
- 28:40Speaker 2: But we'll talk about that in a second.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Now, the significance of Vince Young in this game or
- 28:45Speaker 1: the mere fact that he is even there. Okay, I
- 28:48Speaker 1: will go chronologically because Joel Anderson went to the Astrodome
- 28:52Speaker 1: one day and saw Vince Young and Courtney Lewis playing
- 28:54Speaker 1: for Madison.
- 28:55Speaker 2: And I will let you just go from there.
- 28:57Speaker 4: Yeah, so anyway, at this time, I was working in
- 29:00Speaker 4: Dallas as the Associated Press's high school football writer. So
- 29:03Speaker 4: I covered football all across the state. But I just didn't,
- 29:06Speaker 4: you know, I didn't get a chance to go watch games.
- 29:08Speaker 4: I had to just take games in across the state
- 29:10Speaker 4: and put together sort of a digest. So anyway, my pops,
- 29:13Speaker 4: he was like going, he's the kind of guy that
- 29:15Speaker 4: goes to high school football games.
- 29:18Speaker 2: We do that. We do that.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Yeah, and I would be that guy too. And especially
- 29:22Speaker 4: I will when I get the time again. But my
- 29:24Speaker 4: pops would go and he's like, hey, man, you got
- 29:26Speaker 4: to come down here and see this boy for Madison.
- 29:28Speaker 3: He's unreal. And like, let me explain.
- 29:32Speaker 4: So Houston Madison is always, at the time, they always
- 29:36Speaker 4: had like a really solid football program, but never like a,
- 29:39Speaker 4: state title competitive program. But they beat on that run.
- 29:43Speaker 4: I think they beat North Shore. I think they beat Katy.
- 29:46Speaker 4: And they beat a couple of other schools.
- 29:47Speaker 2: North Shore, really big black people's school, Katy. At that time,
- 29:51Speaker 2: really big white people's school. Andy Dalton came from Katy. Right, yeah.
- 29:54Speaker 3: And so they beat him. I was like, well, he
- 29:56Speaker 3: must be the real deal.
- 29:57Speaker 4: And I'm covering high school football, but still don't have
- 30:01Speaker 4: really a sense for how good Vince Young is. So
- 30:03Speaker 4: we go to the Astrodome and we see them play
- 30:05Speaker 4: in the 5A state semifinal against Austin Westlake. Austin Westlake
- 30:10Speaker 4: is Drew Brees' alma mater. And I'm trying to, I
- 30:12Speaker 4: can't remember the name of the quarterback, but they had
- 30:14Speaker 4: some guy, Chad Schrader, I think. was with a quarterback
- 30:16Speaker 4: that year and he went to college. So anyway, we
- 30:18Speaker 4: go there, the Astrodome, the lower bowl was filled, you know,
- 30:21Speaker 4: brothers on this side, Austin Westlake on that side.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Drew Brees went to Austin Westlake, by the way.
- 30:29Speaker 1: And if you need some help, if you are from
- 30:33Speaker 1: Atlanta and you are familiar with Atlanta Westlake.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It's the exact opposite.
- 30:38Speaker 3: It's not the same thing.
- 30:39Speaker 2: And if you need me to help you with a
- 30:41Speaker 2: little bit more of that, the two people that went
- 30:43Speaker 2: to Atlanta Westlake that I could tell you guys about
- 30:45Speaker 2: that'll help paint the picture for you are Cam Newton
- 30:47Speaker 2: and Pac-Man Jones.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Pac-Man Jones, yeah, man.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Drew Brees went to Austin Westlake.
- 30:51Speaker 3: Not quite the same Westlake. Yeah, not quite it.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Well, Austin Westlake, they call Austin Westlake Austin, but it's
- 30:57Speaker 4: not even in Austin ISD.
- 30:58Speaker 2: It's kind of like Highland Park, right?
- 31:00Speaker 3: Yeah, it's got its own little school district off the.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Because nobody segregates. Like Texas.
- 31:06Speaker 3: Texas can do it. They can figure it out another way, man.
- 31:09Speaker 4: And look, man, Madison was a pretty good football team,
- 31:14Speaker 4: but if Vince Young could have played 10 more snaps
- 31:20Speaker 4: on defense, they'd win that game. But I had never
- 31:24Speaker 4: seen anything like this. Vince Young is like, they could
- 31:26Speaker 4: not tackle the boy.
- 31:28Speaker 3: He's moving his way.
- 31:28Speaker 4: And it's not like he's running away from people. He's
- 31:31Speaker 4: just finessing his way down the field, just like he had.
- 31:35Speaker 4: I mean, he was just so smooth. He was throwing
- 31:38Speaker 4: bombs on a dime. Like it was unreal. I had
- 31:40Speaker 4: never seen a high school quarterback look like this. And
- 31:43Speaker 4: the crowd was just with him, man. Like the South
- 31:45Speaker 4: side of Houston was with this boy. Like we all
- 31:48Speaker 4: like on this, like I didn't root for Madison, but
- 31:51Speaker 4: I'm like, bro, like how can you not get behind
- 31:53Speaker 4: Vince Young? This dude is amazing. And so they lost
- 31:56Speaker 4: that game. mostly because, again, he couldn't play a few
- 32:00Speaker 4: more plays. But they lost by, like, one score in
- 32:02Speaker 4: this game. And when Madison walked off the field that day,
- 32:06Speaker 4: our side of the stadium stood up and gave them
- 32:08Speaker 4: a standing ovation, man. Because it was that, like, that
- 32:10Speaker 4: was how good Vince was that game. And so after that,
- 32:14Speaker 4: I'm like, well, he's going to Miami. Like, that was, like,
- 32:17Speaker 4: the school that he was supposed to be going to. Like,
- 32:19Speaker 4: Miami was the school that was in the lead for him. And, like,
- 32:21Speaker 4: it makes sense. And then all of a sudden, they
- 32:23Speaker 4: say he's going to Texas. And you tell me, bro,
- 32:26Speaker 4: I'm like, Texas? That don't sound like the place that
- 32:29Speaker 4: Vince Young go to school. The south side of Houston
- 32:31Speaker 4: did not go to no University of Texas at that time.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Keep this in mind. He's the third black quarterback that
- 32:41Speaker 2: Texas ever had.
- 32:42Speaker 3: It's sad that we can name this.
- 32:44Speaker 2: What's my man's name? Number one, Donnie Little.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Donnie Little. I'm related to him through marriage, believe it
- 32:49Speaker 3: or not.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Did not know that.
- 32:52Speaker 3: James Brown.
- 32:53Speaker 2: James Brown. The great James Brown.
- 32:56Speaker 3: The great James Brown.
- 32:57Speaker 4: And look, man, when they wrote about James Brown in
- 32:59Speaker 4: the 90s, you should go look at some of the
- 33:01Speaker 4: Sports Illustrated stories about what people told him about going
- 33:04Speaker 4: to school there and what it meant for James Brown
- 33:06Speaker 4: to be the quarterback at University of Texas then.
- 33:08Speaker 3: Because it's like 1997.
- 33:10Speaker 2: 94 was when he went.
- 33:11Speaker 3: Yeah, 94 is when he went. And then I think
- 33:13Speaker 3: he played through 98, 97? 94 through 97. And then
- 33:15Speaker 3: Major got the.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Job in 98.
- 33:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and it was just like the way they talked,
- 33:21Speaker 4: like he was a real, live, legit pioneer, bro.
- 33:24Speaker 3: Like it was, yeah, like the way they talked.
- 33:27Speaker 4: About him is like the people that entered through desegregation
- 33:32Speaker 4: or whatever. Like it was like that, it was that
- 33:33Speaker 4: big a deal for James Brown to be there. So
- 33:35Speaker 4: for Vince Young to want to go there and follow
- 33:37Speaker 4: that sort of legacy, it was kind of like, what
- 33:40Speaker 4: you on, man?
- 33:42Speaker 3: How much did they give you? Why are you going there?
- 33:44Speaker 2: And look, Jonathan, it was a bumpy road, right?
- 33:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 2: Because look, they redshirted him the first year, which based
- 33:51Speaker 2: on what we saw the next two years was an
- 33:53Speaker 2: absolute necessary to be made.
- 33:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Like he. But there was something about him.
- 33:58Speaker 1: And I think you pointed it out because he got
- 34:00Speaker 1: the job in the middle of his freshman year.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Mm hmm.
- 34:03Speaker 2: And.
- 34:05Speaker 1: He didn't ever feel like he was running by guys,
- 34:07Speaker 1: but it felt like nobody could catch him.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Right. This was not watching Michael Vick. No. Right. This is,
- 34:12Speaker 2: this is not even Tommy Frazier in that way, but
- 34:15Speaker 2: he was a giant. There was that part.
- 34:16Speaker 1: He got this funny little shot put motion. Like none
- 34:19Speaker 1: of it seemed to make sense, but you couldn't do
- 34:22Speaker 1: nothing with them, but teams could do just enough. And
- 34:26Speaker 1: so there were some big wins. Like they won a
- 34:29Speaker 1: game at Nebraska in oh three. That was a big one.
- 34:32Speaker 1: There was some ups and downs off the bench. 0-4,
- 34:35Speaker 1: middle of 0-4, they lose to Oklahoma 12-0. And that
- 34:37Speaker 1: 12 may as well have been 75. They were never
- 34:44Speaker 1: in the game. Adrian Peterson ran for 214 of the
- 34:46Speaker 1: most excruciating yards.
- 34:48Speaker 3: All in between the 20s.
- 34:49Speaker 2: All between the 20s.
- 34:50Speaker 3: All between the 20s.
- 34:51Speaker 2: But there was nothing anybody could do, and Vince was bad.
- 34:54Speaker 1: And the thought was that Mack and Greg Davis were
- 34:58Speaker 1: trying too hard to shoehorn Vince into an offense that
- 35:00Speaker 1: did not fit. And so, legendarily, he comes and says
- 35:03Speaker 1: after that, you got to just let me be me.
- 35:05Speaker 1: And Everything changed, including the game where they were down
- 35:08Speaker 1: at home. I want to say thirty five to seven
- 35:11Speaker 1: to Oklahoma State. And then they came back and won
- 35:13Speaker 1: that game by like three touchdowns or something like that.
- 35:16Speaker 3: They almost lost to Kansas the next day.
- 35:17Speaker 2: They almost lost to Kansas. And they won only because
- 35:22Speaker 2: of the most the worst pass interference call that I
- 35:26Speaker 2: have ever seen.
- 35:27Speaker 1: And when Mark Mangini came, Mark Mangino comes in the
- 35:30Speaker 1: press conference. and basically accuses the big 12 of fixing
- 35:33Speaker 1: the game no one could make a compelling argument that he.
- 35:36Speaker 3: Was wrong yeah it was kind of like all right
- 35:38Speaker 3: they got that one though.
- 35:39Speaker 1: Yeah it was so bad it was so bad it
- 35:41Speaker 1: was so bad but that led to vince dominating michigan
- 35:44Speaker 1: where he had like 199 yards and four touchdowns rushing
- 35:47Speaker 1: right right dominant performance in that game and then comes
- 35:51Speaker 1: next year where the game against ohio state where A.J.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Hawk in that same game, I want to say, had
- 35:56Speaker 1: 10 tackles, a sack, and an interception. It was really
- 35:59Speaker 1: like a game between those two when they were on
- 36:02Speaker 1: the field. Ohio State would have won the game, except
- 36:04Speaker 1: Jim Trestle was trying to prove a point to Troy
- 36:05Speaker 1: Smith and did not play him nearly enough at that expense,
- 36:09Speaker 1: whatever it was, though. From there, Texas walked, marched through
- 36:13Speaker 1: the whole year. Vince's second place in the Heisman, very
- 36:17Speaker 1: offended that Reggie Bush won the Heisman. Everybody in the
- 36:19Speaker 1: building knew that Reggie Bush was going to win that Heisman, apparently,
- 36:22Speaker 1: except for Vince Young.
- 36:23Speaker 4: It's funny because you know what it reminded me of?
- 36:25Speaker 4: It reminded me, because I don't think that Vince would
- 36:28Speaker 4: have done what Diego Pavia did, but it was one
- 36:31Speaker 4: of the few times that I could remember the runner
- 36:33Speaker 4: up being like, damn, that's my trophy.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Like usually it's just kind of like you kind of
- 36:39Speaker 4: accept and you understand that, especially Reggie Bush.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Like Reggie Bush was the most famous.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Except we have walked through our entire schedule. Right.
- 36:50Speaker 2: And if you want to be honest- Look who I'm
- 36:52Speaker 2: throwing to. Yeah, man. Like, my best receiver is my
- 36:56Speaker 2: tight end, right? Dave Thomas?
- 36:58Speaker 1: David Thomas was the tight end. Lyman Swede was the
- 37:00Speaker 1: number two receiver. Don't ask Steelers fans about that one, right?
- 37:03Speaker 2: Oh, man. That was not it.
- 37:05Speaker 1: I think Lyman Swede got a lot for looking like
- 37:08Speaker 1: Leroy Williams while wearing the number four.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Fair point.
- 37:11Speaker 2: And play a wide receiver for Texas. He just looked
- 37:14Speaker 2: like Roy Williams.
- 37:15Speaker 1: He did.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Some people just acted like he was Roy Williams.
- 37:18Speaker 3: Very physically impressive.
- 37:19Speaker 2: But he looked exactly like Roy Williams in the uniform.
- 37:22Speaker 2: They had the same face mask and shield. They wore
- 37:25Speaker 2: the same number. They had the same build. It was
- 37:27Speaker 2: the whole nine. Yeah, man. That was as close as
- 37:30Speaker 2: it got.
- 37:31Speaker 3: And Kwon Cosby was, I guess, maybe that tall. And
- 37:34Speaker 3: he was like, I mean, 5'9. He was 25.
- 37:37Speaker 2: Yeah, he was 25.
- 37:38Speaker 4: He had played baseball, came back. He was a great athlete,
- 37:40Speaker 4: really good athlete. But, like, that's not the number one
- 37:44Speaker 4: receiver for a college champion.
- 37:46Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 37:46Speaker 1: No, no, no, no.
- 37:47Speaker 2: It wasn't.
- 37:48Speaker 1: But then this game comes, and the Heisman Trophy thing
- 37:52Speaker 1: certainly had to be a part of it, right? The
- 37:54Speaker 1: other part of it was, I think, Texas was just
- 37:57Speaker 1: a little bit more talented.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Definitely not better coached.
- 38:00Speaker 5: Right.
- 38:01Speaker 2: No.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Gene Chizik on the defense. Greg Davis on the offense.
- 38:04Speaker 1: Mack Brown with the final call on everything.
- 38:07Speaker 4: Bro, I mean, have you looked at the coaching staff
- 38:10Speaker 4: for that USC team? Like Ed Orgeron is on that team.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Ed Orgeron, Lane Kiffin, Steve Sarkeesian.
- 38:16Speaker 3: Yeah. Like, I mean, they had some dudes on that staff, man.
- 38:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 2: No, no, no. Norm Chow. Norm Chow.
- 38:23Speaker 1: No, no.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Norm Chow was not there that year.
- 38:25Speaker 3: Oh, that's right. That's right. He had gone to the Titans.
- 38:27Speaker 2: No, no, no. You're right. He was there that year.
- 38:30Speaker 2: And then he went to the Titans thinking that he
- 38:32Speaker 2: was going to get to coach Matt Leinart. Instead, he
- 38:36Speaker 2: had to coach Vince.
- 38:37Speaker 3: Yeah, man. That's not, that wasn't his bag. That's not
- 38:39Speaker 3: who he wanted. No, no, no, no, no.
- 38:41Speaker 2: That was, that was a, that was a tough go, man.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Like to be, I don't really want to get into
- 38:47Speaker 2: some of the things, some of the assumptions that I've
- 38:49Speaker 2: made about what made it so difficult. But it was
- 38:54Speaker 2: a tough go, man.
- 38:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, look, man.
- 38:58Speaker 2: No, no, by the way, no. Norm was gone by then.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Lane was the offensive coordinator.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Man, that's okay. That's right. I'm looking at it right here.
- 39:07Speaker 3: They had Ken Norton Jr. on that staff. Man, Ken
- 39:09Speaker 3: Norton Jr. has been running.
- 39:10Speaker 4: He's just been basically having the same jobs for the
- 39:14Speaker 4: last 20 years.
- 39:14Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 39:16Speaker 3: But yeah, man. So they had, I mean, Elk.
- 39:19Speaker 4: USC had a decisive coaching advantage. They had a great offense.
- 39:23Speaker 4: But again, the thing that nobody ever paid attention to
- 39:26Speaker 4: going back to it is like in that Fresno State game, man,
- 39:28Speaker 4: a Fresno State team. that did not have like any
- 39:31Speaker 4: stars like this is not you know even Trent Dilfer
- 39:34Speaker 4: of Fresno State Like they.
- 39:36Speaker 3: Just put up numbers on them.
- 39:37Speaker 4: And so people kind of overlooked like, oh, like you can,
- 39:39Speaker 4: they can be had on defense.
- 39:41Speaker 2: You could do that.
- 39:41Speaker 1: But see, to me, it was obvious in part because
- 39:44Speaker 1: I think we overestimated how good that Notre Dame team was.
- 39:47Speaker 1: But the fact that Notre Dame had them until they
- 39:49Speaker 1: had to cheat to win that game at the end
- 39:51Speaker 1: with the Bush push, that was another game, the magnitude
- 39:54Speaker 1: of which I don't know if a college football game
- 39:56Speaker 1: can quite replicate in this day and age. Cause Notre
- 40:00Speaker 1: Dame was just getting back. Charlie Weiss made so much
- 40:02Speaker 1: money off of losing that game.
- 40:04Speaker 3: Oh, man, it really did. That game flowed.
- 40:06Speaker 4: I mean, look, man, do you think his son will
- 40:09Speaker 4: be an offensive coordinator for Ole Miss?
- 40:12Speaker 1: Oh, man, they let all kinds of coaches' sons navigate
- 40:16Speaker 1: through all kinds of things.
- 40:17Speaker 2: You know what I mean? But I get your point, though.
- 40:19Speaker 2: I want to be clear about that.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I don't want you to think that I'm out here
- 40:23Speaker 1: being difficult. But the game starts, and Lindale White, who had, what,
- 40:28Speaker 1: like 180-something yards and two touchdowns?
- 40:31Speaker 3: Yeah, he bullied them.
- 40:32Speaker 1: No, it was 124 yards and three touchdowns. That's what
- 40:34Speaker 1: it was on 20 carries. He looked unstoppable in that game.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Put a pin in that point. But Texas ran off
- 40:41Speaker 1: to a lead. Like, they were up 16-7 with two
- 40:44Speaker 1: minutes left in the first half.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Well, you know, the thing that I think that people overlook, too,
- 40:50Speaker 4: is that we talked about how USC's defense wasn't great.
- 40:53Speaker 3: Texas' defense was actually great, man.
- 40:55Speaker 4: It was excellent. They stopped Matt Leiner. So, Texas, it's
- 40:59Speaker 4: funny you said that because they went into halftime with
- 41:02Speaker 4: the lead. But early on in the game, it looked
- 41:05Speaker 4: like USC was, like, they were really close to pulling away.
- 41:08Speaker 3: Like, they were up 7-0.
- 41:10Speaker 4: They're deep in Texas territory, and Texas stops Matt Leinart
- 41:14Speaker 4: on fourth and one, right? Like, that's a big momentum change.
- 41:18Speaker 4: Then USC's up again, 7-3. They're driving. They're going down here,
- 41:22Speaker 4: and Michael Griffin comes from across the field to intercept
- 41:25Speaker 4: Matt Leinart.
- 41:26Speaker 2: All-time great play.
- 41:27Speaker 4: And also, it doesn't, because at first, like, he doesn't
- 41:30Speaker 4: even act like he caught the ball. Like, it's like, oh,
- 41:32Speaker 4: I stepped out of bounds or something. But if you
- 41:33Speaker 4: look at the, they look at the replay, and they're like, oh, shit,
- 41:36Speaker 4: he got that ball. So the defense held up Just
- 41:39Speaker 4: enough to get the offense going, you know?
- 41:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:42Speaker 2: And by the way, it was the worst game the
- 41:43Speaker 2: defense played all year long. Yeah.
- 41:46Speaker 1: Like, there's no question about that. But second half, USC, okay, right? Like,
- 41:52Speaker 1: this is when it starts. Because, I mean, if you
- 41:55Speaker 1: treated Texas like an underdog, right, which most people did
- 41:59Speaker 1: going into the game, the second half, Lindell White comes out,
- 42:02Speaker 1: they march down the field, score a quick touchdown, another
- 42:05Speaker 1: Lindell's like, oh, okay. Now things are coming back. Now
- 42:08Speaker 1: things are getting back that way.
- 42:09Speaker 2: Nope.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Here comes Vince again. Let me go get a touchdown
- 42:14Speaker 1: right fast on them boys.
- 42:15Speaker 2: Did that. But then you come back around, basically same
- 42:19Speaker 2: thing happened, right?
- 42:20Speaker 1: Like now we're going score for score, possession for possession,
- 42:23Speaker 1: which is basically how it went for the rest of
- 42:25Speaker 1: the game.
- 42:26Speaker 5: Right.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 42:27Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:27Speaker 4: USC scores, UT scores. I mean, I kind of, I
- 42:31Speaker 4: remember it's like getting deep into the fourth quarter and
- 42:34Speaker 4: then USC goes up like by two scores.
- 42:36Speaker 3: I think they went up like 38. They were 38
- 42:37Speaker 3: to 26.
- 42:37Speaker 2: That's right.
- 42:38Speaker 4: And it's like, we're more than halfway through the fourth
- 42:43Speaker 4: quarter at this point. And so you're like, okay, USC
- 42:45Speaker 4: has got them. They finally pulled ahead. Texas is not
- 42:48Speaker 4: going to be able to run off enough points and
- 42:50Speaker 4: enough time to win that game. And like, uh, they,
- 42:54Speaker 4: nobody told Vince young that, you know what I mean?
- 42:56Speaker 1: Cause I understand this Reggie Bush did not have a
- 43:00Speaker 1: great game, but I want to say he had something
- 43:03Speaker 1: like 160 yards for scrimmage or something like that.
- 43:05Speaker 2: It was something like 80 yards, brushing 80 yards receiving.
- 43:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Lindale white though.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Like there's, As a football fan, you know how it goes, man.
- 43:14Speaker 1: We can't stop that guy from running the ball is
- 43:17Speaker 1: the worst feeling in the world. So you're up two scores,
- 43:20Speaker 1: and you can't stop that guy from running the ball.
- 43:24Speaker 1: In particular, a running back that runs like Lindell White Rams.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Between the tackles, hard running. Like, he had the dark
- 43:30Speaker 1: shield on.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Like, it was like, hey, man.
- 43:32Speaker 3: Very much the thunder to the lightning.
- 43:35Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Like, you don't want these
- 43:37Speaker 1: problems with this dude. So you're down two scores. You're
- 43:43Speaker 1: not winning that game. That's how that seems. Except, nope, Vince,
- 43:47Speaker 1: eight plays, 69 yards, two minutes, 39 seconds, marched down
- 43:50Speaker 1: the field, runs for another touchdown, and now USC is
- 43:53Speaker 1: moving down the field again. And, look, we're getting to
- 43:57Speaker 1: about two minutes left in the game, fourth and two. Again,
- 44:03Speaker 1: Lindell White cannot be stopped. Pete did not put Reggie
- 44:07Speaker 1: Bush on the field for that play. I don't think
- 44:09Speaker 1: that's as big a deal as people make it out
- 44:10Speaker 1: to be. Because the thought is, well, you wouldn't have
- 44:12Speaker 1: to worry about Reggie Bush.
- 44:13Speaker 2: No, you didn't. Right?
- 44:14Speaker 1: Like, the ball was going to Lindell White. It was
- 44:17Speaker 1: just going to be if they could move enough furniture.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And Michael Huff was not supposed to come on the play.
- 44:23Speaker 5: Right?
- 44:24Speaker 1: He was not supposed to blitz.
- 44:28Speaker 2: He decided to blitz anyway.
- 44:29Speaker 3: Yeah, man. That's what great players do, man.
- 44:31Speaker 2: Good thing he did.
- 44:32Speaker 3: Yeah, great players do make a point.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Because that was the stop.
- 44:34Speaker 3: You got to follow your instincts.
- 44:35Speaker 4: A great player following their instincts in that sort of
- 44:38Speaker 4: a moment, that's what makes you a great player.
- 44:40Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 44:40Speaker 1: Let me tell you, that was the stop, and I
- 44:42Speaker 1: knew right then and there watching that game.
- 44:44Speaker 2: I was like, yep, national championship is on the way.
- 44:47Speaker 4: Oh, everybody knew because I felt like when Texas just
- 44:50Speaker 4: runs off the field, they're hype, and the camera goes
- 44:53Speaker 4: to Vince Young putting on his helmet, getting ready to
- 44:55Speaker 4: walk up to the field, and I'm like, oh, shit,
- 44:57Speaker 4: here we go.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Yeah, it's over.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Bo, can you just slow down for a second? You
- 45:02Speaker 3: know I was rooting for Texas in this game?
- 45:04Speaker 2: How could you not?
- 45:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I was a huge.
- 45:07Speaker 4: Joel hates Texas, just to be clear. I hate Texas, man.
- 45:12Speaker 4: There's nothing about the school that I like. I have
- 45:14Speaker 4: friends that went to school there. I've had good times
- 45:16Speaker 4: at the University of Texas campus.
- 45:17Speaker 3: It's all good.
- 45:18Speaker 4: But what they stand for and all that shit, I'm
- 45:20Speaker 4: not into it.
- 45:21Speaker 3: But Vince Young... is such an irresistible figure to me, man.
- 45:25Speaker 4: And so when he comes onto the field and I'm
- 45:28Speaker 4: just like, oh yeah, I already know what's about to happen, bro.
- 45:30Speaker 4: We all know, you know, we all know they set
- 45:32Speaker 4: it up for that brother.
- 45:34Speaker 2: What was it? Was it fourth and, it was fourth
- 45:36Speaker 2: and five.
- 45:37Speaker 3: Fourth and five.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Fourth and five at the nine yard line. And I
- 45:40Speaker 2: was just like, I.
- 45:43Speaker 1: Had no nerves about what was going to happen. I
- 45:45Speaker 1: was like, maybe it'll be a first down. Maybe it'll
- 45:48Speaker 1: be a touchdown. But what it ain't about to be
- 45:50Speaker 1: is a loss.
- 45:51Speaker 3: Man, is that the most.
- 45:53Speaker 4: Like the most confident you've ever felt about a fourth
- 45:56Speaker 4: and five in your life.
- 45:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. So he drops back and he runs or
- 46:02Speaker 2: runs around to the right.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 46:04Speaker 2: And the second he started running, I was like, well,
- 46:06Speaker 2: what I know is this, whoever is going to be
- 46:08Speaker 2: there to try to stop him is not going to
- 46:11Speaker 2: be capable of taking his horse down.
- 46:13Speaker 1: And we have not said it explicitly. Fitz Young is
- 46:16Speaker 1: like six, five to 40.
- 46:18Speaker 5: Yeah, man.
- 46:18Speaker 3: Big motherfucker, man.
- 46:19Speaker 2: Big, big, big.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Like once it went around to the right, I knew
- 46:23Speaker 1: that wasn't going down, and we can't get you so
- 46:25Speaker 1: close here, but that's what's going on right here.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, man. That is Vince Young. There's one guy
- 46:32Speaker 2: standing up, and there's one guy on his back. Like,
- 46:36Speaker 2: that was it.
- 46:37Speaker 4: I just remember running into that end zone and, like,
- 46:40Speaker 4: everybody coming to him, man.
- 46:41Speaker 3: It was like, damn, bro. He really?
- 46:44Speaker 2: He did that.
- 46:45Speaker 3: He did that.
- 46:46Speaker 2: He didn't carry bums.
- 46:48Speaker 5: No, man.
- 46:48Speaker 1: He carried an incredibly talented roster.
- 46:52Speaker 2: But he did carry them.
- 46:55Speaker 4: See, and that's the thing that is crazy to me because, again,
- 46:58Speaker 4: there's very few players that you feel like their swag
- 47:01Speaker 4: or their confidence really bolsters everybody else. But that's the
- 47:06Speaker 4: thing about Vince Young that I even noticed in high school.
- 47:08Speaker 4: It was just like whenever he came on the field,
- 47:10Speaker 4: and he had very much a lot of reason to believe,
- 47:13Speaker 4: nobody can stop me from doing what I want to do.
- 47:15Speaker 1: Right?
- 47:16Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Like I'm going to do
- 47:17Speaker 3: what I want to do.
- 47:17Speaker 2: It ain't happened yet.
- 47:18Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Right.
- 47:18Speaker 3: It ain't happened. Nobody has stopped me. So I'm going
- 47:20Speaker 3: to be fine.
- 47:21Speaker 4: And so like, that's, that's the thing that Texas had
- 47:23Speaker 4: not had and really has not ever had since. I mean,
- 47:25Speaker 4: Colt McCoy was a very, a great college quarterback, but
- 47:29Speaker 4: he was not Vince Young. And it was just like, yo,
- 47:31Speaker 4: when you, when, when Vince Young came onto the field,
- 47:33Speaker 4: when Vince Young did his thing, it was just like, oh,
- 47:35Speaker 4: we're going to be okay because Vince got it handled.
- 47:37Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 47:38Speaker 4: All we got to do is do our part. We
- 47:39Speaker 4: got to get the Michael Huffs to make a big play.
- 47:42Speaker 4: We got to get the Cedric Griffins to make a
- 47:43Speaker 4: big play. We got to get Reggie Bush to do
- 47:45Speaker 4: a crazy-ass pitch.
- 47:47Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 47:47Speaker 2: Oh, I forgot.
- 47:48Speaker 3: We didn't talk about that. You know what I'm saying?
- 47:51Speaker 2: I always say.
- 47:55Speaker 1: They always say that the Heisman people took that trophy
- 47:59Speaker 1: back from Reggie. No, Reggie threw that bitch on the field.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Reggie threw that down, that wild lateral. I don't know.
- 48:06Speaker 1: Like in this day and age, we would have to
- 48:08Speaker 1: ask sincerely if he was shaving points.
- 48:12Speaker 3: Have you watched that play recently?
- 48:13Speaker 2: I have not.
- 48:15Speaker 3: OK, so I was watching a little bit of the
- 48:17Speaker 3: game the other night.
- 48:18Speaker 4: And my recollection of the play from that time was
- 48:22Speaker 4: that Reggie Bush was sort of in the open field.
- 48:25Speaker 3: One guy got up to him and he kind of
- 48:26Speaker 3: pitched it.
- 48:27Speaker 2: He was in traffic. He was in traffic.
- 48:29Speaker 3: He threw the ball and gave it to somebody. I
- 48:32Speaker 3: was like, dog, what?
- 48:33Speaker 2: What are you doing? There were hands on him when
- 48:36Speaker 2: he did that.
- 48:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:38Speaker 4: Yeah. I was like, bro, that is, it's the crazy.
- 48:40Speaker 4: Cause he's never done anything crazy like that before in
- 48:43Speaker 4: his career before.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Right. Like I'd never seen him like do that all
- 48:46Speaker 3: of a sudden.
- 48:47Speaker 4: And actually it was the, it was only the second
- 48:49Speaker 4: crazy pitch that happened in that game too.
- 48:51Speaker 3: Cause remember if you, UT's first play came on a
- 48:54Speaker 3: pitch like that from Vince DeSelvin.
- 48:56Speaker 2: Young, you know?
- 48:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 48:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:59Speaker 1: They got that one play in the USC people complained
- 49:01Speaker 1: about where Vince's knee was down and pitched it to Selvin.
- 49:04Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 49:05Speaker 3: I mean, they were.
- 49:06Speaker 2: Hey man.
- 49:07Speaker 3: I mean, that's the game, man.
- 49:08Speaker 2: It's the air time, right?
- 49:09Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 49:10Speaker 1: The air time is going to capture some of the
- 49:12Speaker 1: noise in the function. But now this was the first
- 49:16Speaker 1: national championship that Texas had won. It had been so long.
- 49:20Speaker 1: that they had never won a national championship with a
- 49:22Speaker 1: black player.
- 49:22Speaker 3: That's right.
- 49:23Speaker 4: Oh, man.
- 49:24Speaker 1: Yeah. It had literally been that long. The most memorable
- 49:30Speaker 1: postseason event that Texas had had was getting destroyed by
- 49:34Speaker 1: Miami in That was something else we could have done
- 49:36Speaker 1: a Time Machine Tuesday on.
- 49:40Speaker 2: That game is shit.
- 49:42Speaker 1: I might find a way just to do that during
- 49:45Speaker 1: the summer.
- 49:46Speaker 2: Just for the hell of it.
- 49:49Speaker 4: This all goes back to the historical piece of it
- 49:51Speaker 4: because that Miami game, just without getting too deep into it,
- 49:55Speaker 4: it was like Miami had the brothers, man. In Texas,
- 49:58Speaker 4: they had an offensive tackle named Stan Thomas who.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Was talking shit. He called them thugs and all this
- 50:02Speaker 3: other stuff.
- 50:03Speaker 4: It was just like, I don't know why he thought
- 50:05Speaker 4: it was a good idea to get them boys amped
- 50:07Speaker 4: up before the game, but he did it.
- 50:09Speaker 1: Have you read Bruce Feldman's book, Kane Mutiny?
- 50:13Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 50:14Speaker 1: And so the best part of that is the Miami
- 50:19Speaker 1: players were on orders to behave themselves.
- 50:22Speaker 3: Oh, my God, yes.
- 50:24Speaker 1: And Dennis Erickson had told everybody and promised everyone that
- 50:29Speaker 1: they were going to take care of themselves.
- 50:32Speaker 2: And then Michael Irvin.
- 50:33Speaker 1: started calling the dudes at the hotel in the morning
- 50:36Speaker 1: and basically said, man, get the fuck out of here
- 50:39Speaker 1: with that bullshit. And on the opening kickoff, Robert Bailey
- 50:44Speaker 1: ran down the field and knocked the returner unconscious.
- 50:47Speaker 3: Chris Samuels. Knocked Chris Samuels out.
- 50:48Speaker 2: And it all went downhill. Miami won the game 46-3
- 50:52Speaker 2: with over 200 yards.
- 50:55Speaker 4: Of penalties the the funny thing that i read about
- 50:57Speaker 4: that is that the next year you know the ncaa
- 51:00Speaker 4: puts together like a list of infractions the tape right
- 51:02Speaker 4: infractions like you can't do this you can't do this
- 51:04Speaker 4: in a game and like it was basically a miami
- 51:07Speaker 4: hurricanes highlight yes yes it.
- 51:08Speaker 2: Was all it was the cow game yeah it was
- 51:11Speaker 2: that one like they i can look back on it
- 51:13Speaker 2: now as an adult and be like okay you boys
- 51:18Speaker 2: are wild right this was a little much.
- 51:24Speaker 1: But it was texas that was on the business end
- 51:25Speaker 1: of it figuratively as much as they were literally and
- 51:29Speaker 1: now houston's.
- 51:31Speaker 3: Own houston's own south side.
- 51:33Speaker 1: South harold clark's own i remember my uncle had passed
- 51:37Speaker 1: away right around then and so the funeral was a
- 51:39Speaker 1: few days after the rose bowl and my uncle who
- 51:42Speaker 1: lives in another uncle who lives in harold clark uh
- 51:45Speaker 1: was at the house and i was like So y'all
- 51:47Speaker 1: still jamming down there?
- 51:48Speaker 2: He's like, oh, you talking about Vince?
- 51:50Speaker 1: And this is not a man that be rooting for
- 51:52Speaker 1: no university in Houston.
- 51:55Speaker 2: Nah, man. Vince was doing it for a lot of people. Oh, bro.
- 51:59Speaker 4: It really, I mean, man, that guy, I mean, that's
- 52:02Speaker 4: the thing. This is why Texas holds on to him
- 52:04Speaker 4: so tightly.
- 52:05Speaker 3: You know what I mean? Because Vince is, you know, look.
- 52:09Speaker 2: He can make it challenging.
- 52:10Speaker 3: He can make it challenging.
- 52:11Speaker 4: Vince has had, you know, I think things seem to be,
- 52:14Speaker 4: going a little bit better now, but there was a
- 52:16Speaker 4: time when he had to separate himself from the program
- 52:18Speaker 4: and the program separated themselves from him for a moment,
- 52:20Speaker 4: but they welcomed him back. But like, that is how
- 52:23Speaker 4: much Vince means to that program, man. Like he, I mean,
- 52:28Speaker 4: you had a dude like me to root for Texas, man.
- 52:31Speaker 4: You had brothers, like people that would never consider that school,
- 52:33Speaker 4: like never thought that we had any sort of kinship
- 52:36Speaker 4: or any place on that campus. And Vince Young made
- 52:39Speaker 4: us feel like we were part of that fan group
- 52:40Speaker 4: for a little bit, man.
- 52:41Speaker 2: Hey man, that program, has Earl Campbell, Heisman Trophy winner.
- 52:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:49Speaker 2: Ricky Williams. Yeah, Ricky Williams. Heisman Trophy winner.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 52:55Speaker 2: And they are playing for second.
- 52:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 52:57Speaker 2: The most important player in the history of that program.
- 53:00Speaker 1: Man.
- 53:01Speaker 2: Is Vince. Woo! Oh, man.
- 53:03Speaker 3: So, man, you got him over Earl. Man, yeah, I mean,
- 53:05Speaker 3: you were right. You were right, but, man, Earl Campbell, man.
- 53:09Speaker 2: You know what's amazing about Earl Campbell in college footage?
- 53:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Everybody remembers that play against Rice. And honestly, they should
- 53:15Speaker 1: have never let Earl Campbell play football against Rice. Where
- 53:18Speaker 1: he picks that one dude up and throws him like
- 53:20Speaker 1: five yards, going in for the touchdown. The thing about
- 53:24Speaker 1: Earl Campbell college footage is, Earl Campbell NFL highlights.
- 53:28Speaker 2: Are all him running dead into somebody's chest.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Yes.
- 53:32Speaker 2: He's so fast that in college, those dudes aren't in
- 53:36Speaker 2: the screen.
- 53:36Speaker 3: He's running away from them in college.
- 53:38Speaker 2: He's running away from people. And only had one year,
- 53:41Speaker 2: by the way, as a tailback.
- 53:42Speaker 1: Right. all the other years he was playing fullback right
- 53:45Speaker 1: but Vince I mean Earl didn't win no title.
- 53:48Speaker 3: That's right that's right he didn't win no title that's
- 53:51Speaker 3: right the one thing.
- 53:52Speaker 4: That I would say that would work in Earl's favor
- 53:56Speaker 4: is that it is the Vince years never built into
- 53:59Speaker 4: anything though like nothing oh I disagree nothing came well
- 54:03Speaker 4: I mean what has Texas done since then.
- 54:06Speaker 1: To say that it didn't build into anything ignores that
- 54:09Speaker 1: four years later they were right back in that same
- 54:12Speaker 1: stadium playing for another national championship that if Colt doesn't
- 54:15Speaker 1: get hurt on the second drive of the game.
- 54:17Speaker 3: They still lose.
- 54:19Speaker 2: Here's why I don't agree. It's easy to dismiss it.
- 54:23Speaker 2: Go look at that era of Nick.
- 54:25Speaker 1: Saban Alabama football and go look at the teams that
- 54:28Speaker 1: beat them. And they all had in common the same thing.
- 54:32Speaker 2: A quarterback that could move. A quarterback that could move.
- 54:34Speaker 1: It didn't have to be a quarterback that could run
- 54:36Speaker 1: like Vince, but just somebody that made the defense have
- 54:39Speaker 1: to account for that man.
- 54:40Speaker 2: I mean, they.
- 54:41Speaker 1: Were marching on them through those first two drives of
- 54:45Speaker 1: the game.
- 54:45Speaker 3: But this is the thing.
- 54:47Speaker 4: A quarterback that runs has to get hit by Alabama defense.
- 54:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I hear you, but I'm just saying,
- 54:52Speaker 1: if he does not get hurt, the idea that if
- 54:54Speaker 1: Cole doesn't get hurt, they still lose, there's a great
- 54:58Speaker 1: deal of, evidence to indicate that I could not say
- 55:01Speaker 1: that with the confidence that you say it but I
- 55:03Speaker 1: guess my question would be well you say it didn't
- 55:06Speaker 1: build into anything they spent most of the next year
- 55:08Speaker 1: in the top five right and it wasn't until Colt
- 55:10Speaker 1: got hurt again that that started to come apart in
- 55:12Speaker 1: 08 they had a one loss season where they lost
- 55:15Speaker 1: the one game by one point dead at the end
- 55:18Speaker 1: and probably should have played for a national championship I
- 55:20Speaker 1: guess my question would be what was this supposed to
- 55:22Speaker 1: build into.
- 55:23Speaker 4: Yeah I mean I guess the thing is is that
- 55:25Speaker 4: if you would have thought that that would have created
- 55:27Speaker 4: a whole another generation of like you know, recruiting classes and,
- 55:31Speaker 4: you know.
- 55:31Speaker 2: But they kept bringing in dudes. The problem was they
- 55:34Speaker 2: were poorly coached.
- 55:35Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 55:36Speaker 4: I mean, it's like they had Tyrone Swoops. I remember
- 55:38Speaker 4: I went through this. I wrote about Archmanic earlier in
- 55:40Speaker 4: the year. They had, like, the Tyrone Swoopses. They had,
- 55:43Speaker 4: who was that, man?
- 55:44Speaker 3: I mean, they had just a bunch of.
- 55:46Speaker 4: Guys that were, like, highly regarded, but just it didn't
- 55:48Speaker 4: feel like Texas seized on that moment and became, like,
- 55:52Speaker 4: Texas in the way that we thought. Like, I thought
- 55:55Speaker 4: when Vince won that national championship, okay, we're going to
- 55:58Speaker 4: see Texas win another national championship again sometime in the
- 56:00Speaker 4: next 20 years.
- 56:01Speaker 3: But again, they were- They were on the cuffs. They
- 56:03Speaker 3: were on the cuffs.
- 56:04Speaker 2: They were right there.
- 56:04Speaker 1: The problem is you got to get another one of
- 56:07Speaker 1: those and they just don't make those.
- 56:10Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 56:11Speaker 1: Like, like, you know, I mean, the Colt McCoy story
- 56:14Speaker 1: is amazing when you really stop and think about it, right?
- 56:16Speaker 1: This is a West Texas two-way high school player who
- 56:22Speaker 1: became truly one of the greatest quarterbacks in the history
- 56:24Speaker 1: of college football. Yeah.
- 56:26Speaker 3: He could have won a Heisman. You know what I mean?
- 56:28Speaker 2: He's one of the great freshman quarterbacks that there's ever been.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Like it was all there.
- 56:32Speaker 1: So I felt like, I did think they built off
- 56:34Speaker 1: of that. That 06 recruiting class was huge. Like once
- 56:37Speaker 1: he came in, they.
- 56:38Speaker 2: Brought the dudes in and then.
- 56:39Speaker 3: Matt, He lost it, man.
- 56:42Speaker 2: He lost it. There's no other way around it.
- 56:44Speaker 4: Well, I mean, I also was like, I mean, Greg Davis,
- 56:47Speaker 4: I mean, you know what I'm saying? And then, you know,
- 56:48Speaker 4: they lose Will Muschamp. People leave and things change, but
- 56:52Speaker 4: I just felt like at that time, I remember thinking,
- 56:56Speaker 4: I was like, damn, man, we're going to have to
- 56:57Speaker 4: be dealing with Texas for the rest of my life now.
- 56:59Speaker 4: You know, like Texas being great. And then TCU, oh,
- 57:03Speaker 4: I'm not wearing my TCU sweatshirt today.
- 57:04Speaker 3: I'm wearing a 7131. You don't know nothing about that.
- 57:07Speaker 4: But what happened is that I mean, TCU wins 8
- 57:12Speaker 4: of the 12 in the Big 12 era, man.
- 57:14Speaker 3: That's not the Texas that I thought.
- 57:16Speaker 2: No, I mean, that's truly embarrassing for Texas. Yeah, I agree.
- 57:21Speaker 2: There's no way around it. It turned in the way
- 57:24Speaker 2: it did.
- 57:25Speaker 1: Of course, they had three years where a lot of
- 57:27Speaker 1: people around the program were more concerned with getting the
- 57:30Speaker 1: coach fired than they were with actually winning football games.
- 57:32Speaker 3: Charlie Strong, man.
- 57:34Speaker 2: That did happen. Don't get me wrong. He did not
- 57:36Speaker 2: do much to acquit himself, but That did happen.
- 57:40Speaker 4: The thing is, when he got hired, you tell me
- 57:43Speaker 4: if you felt the same way. I was like, this
- 57:45Speaker 4: isn't going to work.
- 57:46Speaker 2: The athletic director went and hired a black dude and
- 57:50Speaker 2: didn't run it by nobody.
- 57:52Speaker 4: Was it Red McCombs who said, I think he would
- 57:54Speaker 4: have made a great defensive coordinator?
- 57:58Speaker 2: Here's the question, though. Was he wrong? He went to
- 58:03Speaker 2: South Florida and looked exactly the same.
- 58:05Speaker 4: The thing is, at that time, I mean, it was.
- 58:11Speaker 1: The sentiment behind it was the sentiment behind it. Coincidentally,
- 58:16Speaker 1: vindication arrived.
- 58:21Speaker 3: That's true.
- 58:22Speaker 4: And Charlie had some other stuff going on, too, kind
- 58:25Speaker 4: of in the background during them years.
- 58:27Speaker 3: Yeah, he did.
- 58:29Speaker 2: But here's what's interesting, though. You're right.
- 58:31Speaker 1: It never turned into anything for Texas, but also USC
- 58:35Speaker 1: was never the same.
- 58:36Speaker 4: Oh, man, look, I remember when you mentioned that 2018,
- 58:39Speaker 4: because I thought that 2018 was great.
- 58:41Speaker 1: I thought Texas and USC should have been back in
- 58:44Speaker 1: a championship game again.
- 58:45Speaker 3: Absolutely. Raymar Malanga, you know, Brian Cushing.
- 58:49Speaker 2: Ray Maluga, I believe is how you say it.
- 58:52Speaker 3: Yeah, was that Maluga?
- 58:54Speaker 5: Yes.
- 58:54Speaker 3: Okay, yeah. See, people that watch Tailgate know I be
- 58:57Speaker 3: mispronouncing names. That's my joint.
- 58:59Speaker 4: But yeah, man, so I, yeah, USC, that's, and that's
- 59:02Speaker 4: kind of the funny thing because again, USC is kind
- 59:04Speaker 4: of like Texas in that way.
- 59:05Speaker 3: It's like, why aren't y'all better? Like you got what
- 59:08Speaker 3: you need. You've got it.
- 59:10Speaker 2: You need.
- 59:10Speaker 1: There was a run last decade where none of the
- 59:14Speaker 1: top 20 football players in California went to USC or UCLA.
- 59:19Speaker 2: I mean, that's... It was inexplicable.
- 59:22Speaker 1: They were just going everywhere else. They never really got
- 59:26Speaker 1: up off the ground after the probation.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Like, I don't... Like, USC.
- 59:30Speaker 1: Right now, there's no reason. What reason is there for
- 59:34Speaker 1: Ohio State necessarily to be better than USC? Except for
- 59:37Speaker 1: the fact that they got money. And that's the problem
- 59:39Speaker 1: they got now is they got a, but USC, part
- 59:42Speaker 1: of why Reggie Bush was so famous, part of why
- 59:44Speaker 1: OJ Simpson was so famous is that USC is a
- 59:46Speaker 1: really big deal to rich, famous people.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Right.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Oh, you know, and so it gets back to like,
- 59:51Speaker 1: I don't like, I remember the first time I saw.
- 59:53Speaker 2: Caleb Williams with his NIL money at USC. I was like,
- 59:55Speaker 2: oh shit, they back.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Cause I mean, who could give you a better visit
- 59:58Speaker 1: than USC can?
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: Absolutely. Like, oh, USC is loud. And the campus itself
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: is beautiful.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: I mean, you know, you know, if you, if you,
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: if you, if you can get past whatever you think
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: about the surrounding neighborhood, the campus itself is beautiful. So,
- 1:00:14Speaker 4: but it's funny you mentioned that because a couple of
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: years after that national championship, When I was at the
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: Shreveport Times, Shreveport Times had enough money to send me
- 1:00:21Speaker 4: out there to do a profile on John David Booty, okay?
- 1:00:25Speaker 4: John David Booty, one of Shreveport's greatest all-time quarterbacks and
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: also part of the legendary Booty family. And I remember
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: I was talking with John David Booty. I'm sitting on
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: campus and somebody in the background playing a piccolo and
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: it's like 72 degrees. It's gorgeous out there. And I'm
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: just asking him, so like, tell me what it's like
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: being a quarterback at Shreveport, a quarterback at USC. And
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: he told me about how like Ashton Kutcher played And
- 1:00:48Speaker 4: James Conn had invited him up to throw the football around.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: At their house. Like he was like, yeah, man, why
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: don't you guys come on up and throw the football around?
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: And I was like, damn, like USC guy, you can
- 1:00:57Speaker 4: just do that. You know what I'm saying? They want
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: to hang out with you like that. And at that
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: time consider LA didn't have an NFL team.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: And so like they had, they had that whole thing
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: on lock. And I was like, what could be better
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: than this? But I think one thing that maybe sort
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: of underrated with the USC thing is that, um, man,
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: there's not as many black people live in California as
- 1:01:17Speaker 4: there used to be.
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: That is true.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: You know what I mean? There's a lot.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: I mean, the Bay area is basically gotten cleared out.
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: So like, that's what OJ is for. OJ is from
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: San Francisco, man. The projects, Portero Hill projects. So you,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: Cali doesn't have the same. A lot of them black
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: folks have moved to Arizona and Las Vegas, more affordable
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: areas have moved completely away.
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: So they don't have that anymore.
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: So I, I got to think that that hurts in
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: terms of like the pool of players that they've got
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: to pick.
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: From, right?
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: No, but you're right though.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: It never dawned on me that 20 years after that game,
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: neither of those programs would ever come close to those
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: heights again. And it has not happened. But that right
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: there is Joel Anderson. Check him out on the ring
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: of tailgate and let us all congratulate him. I don't
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: know if he passed 100% on this one, but a
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: whole hour, And you didn't even turn into your true
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: hating ass self.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: And we love that you, we love that you tried.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: I was going to, I was going to, I was
- 1:02:12Speaker 4: going to, cause I heard your little show yesterday, man.
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: What you said about me, about being, you know, one
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: of your top haters or whatever.
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: And I don't want to get into it.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: Not one of my personal top haters.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Like, like, I mean, actually you are, I mean, you
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: hate on me tough, but yes, you are the immediate
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: hater that came to my mind, but continue.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: I didn't want to get into it because I was
- 1:02:31Speaker 4: going to be like, you know, we could compare like
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: who we hate against and see what the community thinks
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: about it. But I didn't want to do that. I
- 1:02:37Speaker 4: came prepared to address that. But because you want some
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: different stuff today, I was like, OK, we're just going
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: to collab.
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: We're going to be, you know, saying boys, man. So
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: I'm just, you know, I'm going to let it go.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: Go ahead and go ahead and ask. We'll let the
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: community speak on this. I appreciate you doing you're doing
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: the best you could.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I did the best I could.
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: Great job, brother. Great job. There you go. Ladies and gentlemen,
