- 0:00Speaker 1: If you have your Bible, is open to Exodus chapter six,
- 0:07Speaker 1: and we're looking today at those first nine verses in
- 0:12Speaker 1: Exodus chapter six. In Exodus chapter five, you come off
- 0:20Speaker 1: one of those low points, a low point where God
- 0:23Speaker 1: has begun to act on behalf of his people, and
- 0:27Speaker 1: Pharaoh responded negatively, and in his negative response, he increased
- 0:32Speaker 1: hardship on the Israelites. The Israelites immediately turned against Moses
- 0:40Speaker 1: because of this hardship that was increased against them, and Moses,
- 0:45Speaker 1: great leader that he is, turns to God and complains
- 0:50Speaker 1: because God hasn't done what he promised to do. And
- 0:55Speaker 1: so Chapter five was rather discouraging in terms of the
- 0:59Speaker 1: faith and faith of God's people. Now, one would think
- 1:05Speaker 1: that if that was the case in chapter five, we
- 1:07Speaker 1: would open to chapter six, and in chapter six we
- 1:10Speaker 1: would find another story. And instead we find same song
- 1:18Speaker 1: second verse. There is more faithlessness, there is more disbelief,
- 1:26Speaker 1: there is more moaning and crying against God. Yet in
- 1:32Speaker 1: the midst of this there is a statement that God
- 1:35Speaker 1: makes that is crucial in understanding a couple of things. First,
- 1:41Speaker 1: it's crucial in understanding why Israel and Moses are wrong
- 1:46Speaker 1: in groaning against God. And secondly, it's crucial to understanding
- 1:53Speaker 1: how it is that God is going to do what
- 1:57Speaker 1: he said he would do, and why it is that
- 2:00Speaker 1: God is going to do what he said he would do. Now,
- 2:05Speaker 1: the fact of the matter is less we get on
- 2:07Speaker 1: our high horse. What we see in Israel and in
- 2:10Speaker 1: Moses in chapter five, in chapter six is the exact
- 2:14Speaker 1: same thing we see in ourselves in our everyday lives. Amen, somebody,
- 2:23Speaker 1: we do the same thing. There is a promise that
- 2:28Speaker 1: we believe, a truth to which we hold, and there's
- 2:34Speaker 1: a way that we believe that God ought to do
- 2:37Speaker 1: what he has promised to do. And then God doesn't
- 2:42Speaker 1: do what we think God ought to do, and two
- 2:47Speaker 1: things happen. Number One, we shake our fists at God
- 2:53Speaker 1: because he didn't do what we thought he ought to do.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And secondly, we act as though God has forgotten how
- 3:00Speaker 1: to take care of his business. It's one thing for
- 3:05Speaker 1: us to be upset because I had an expectation and
- 3:08Speaker 1: things didn't happen in accordance with my expectation. It's another
- 3:12Speaker 1: thing to say, God, you've sinned against me, which essentially
- 3:21Speaker 1: is what we say, you didn't do what you were
- 3:24Speaker 1: supposed to do. You are wrong. You owed me something
- 3:28Speaker 1: and you didn't give me what you owed me. There
- 3:32Speaker 1: was a way to do this, there was a best
- 3:35Speaker 1: way to do this, and I know what the best
- 3:38Speaker 1: way was to get this done, and you did not
- 3:41Speaker 1: do this and the best way to get this done? God,
- 3:45Speaker 1: how dare you.
- 3:48Speaker 2: Well?
- 3:48Speaker 1: I would never speak to God like that, not openly.
- 3:55Speaker 1: But that's exactly what Israel is saying to God here,
- 4:00Speaker 1: and it's exactly what we have a tendency to say
- 4:03Speaker 1: to God in the midst of our frustration. But if
- 4:09Speaker 1: we will remember this statement, it will help turn us
- 4:14Speaker 1: away from that tendency and towards something that is war true. First,
- 4:20Speaker 1: let me read this passage in its entirety, and then
- 4:24Speaker 1: we'll look at it more carefully. Let me go back
- 4:29Speaker 1: to the last paragraph from last week. Then Moses turned
- 4:33Speaker 1: to the Lord and said, O Lord, why have you
- 4:36Speaker 1: done evil to this people? Evil? He accuses God of evil?
- 4:44Speaker 1: Why have you done evil to this people? Why did
- 4:48Speaker 1: you ever send me? For since I came to Pharaoh
- 4:52Speaker 1: to speak in your name, he has done evil to
- 4:56Speaker 1: this people, and you have not delivered your people at all. God,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you did evil? How did God do evil? By allowing
- 5:07Speaker 1: Pharaoh to do evil. So now God is being blamed
- 5:10Speaker 1: for the evil that Pharaoh has done. Never mind the
- 5:14Speaker 1: fact that God said, hey, I'm going to send you
- 5:16Speaker 1: to Pharaoh. Oh, by the way, he's going to harden
- 5:19Speaker 1: his heart and he's not gonna do what you tell
- 5:21Speaker 1: him to do. Now it happens exactly the way God
- 5:26Speaker 1: said it was going to happen. And Moses said, you've
- 5:29Speaker 1: done evil. Chapter six, verse one. But the Lord said
- 5:35Speaker 1: to Moses, now you shall see what I will do
- 5:39Speaker 1: to Pharaoh. For with a strong hand he will send
- 5:43Speaker 1: them out, and with a strong hand he will drive
- 5:47Speaker 1: them out of his land. That's amazing. That's amazing, And
- 5:54Speaker 1: that's grace and its kindness and its mercy. I remember
- 6:00Speaker 1: when I was a kid, but my mother was, how
- 6:06Speaker 1: do we put this? My mama didn't play. And I
- 6:11Speaker 1: remember as a kid one time in a grocery store
- 6:16Speaker 1: hearing another child say something to their parent and throw
- 6:23Speaker 1: a tantrum and throw something down in a grocery store.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I don't know how old I was. I must have
- 6:29Speaker 1: been six, seven, eight years old or so, because I
- 6:33Speaker 1: remember this, and I remember when it happened, and the
- 6:37Speaker 1: kid yelled at their mother and said whatever it was
- 6:40Speaker 1: of their mother, and threw that thing down on the ground.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And I literally ducked, just in case his mama was
- 6:50Speaker 1: anything like my mama, because I just thought to myself,
- 6:56Speaker 1: if I had done what he just did, I wouldn't
- 7:01Speaker 1: make it out of the store. When I read the
- 7:08Speaker 1: end of chapter five and the way that Moses spoke
- 7:13Speaker 1: to God, something in me just wants to duck. Don't
- 7:20Speaker 1: you feel that way? I mean, I read that and
- 7:23Speaker 1: I go, I just I couldn't imagine having the audacity,
- 7:27Speaker 1: the unmitigated gall to say what Moses says to God.
- 7:32Speaker 1: At the end of chapter five, he's in trouble, and
- 7:38Speaker 1: chapter six begins and God doesn't strike him dead. He
- 7:44Speaker 1: doesn't even strike him with leprosy or whatever. He didn't
- 7:50Speaker 1: He doesn't even get from God what he got earlier.
- 7:52Speaker 1: When you know in the circumcision passage, when you know here,
- 7:56Speaker 1: here it is, and we're trying to figure it out.
- 7:57Speaker 1: You know who it is that's about to die, who
- 7:59Speaker 1: it is God is coming against, about to kill them.
- 8:03Speaker 1: But in chapter six that doesn't happen. Instead, God moves
- 8:09Speaker 1: right along and he makes a statement, this is the
- 8:12Speaker 1: prologue to the statement, and the prologue is, oh, You're
- 8:18Speaker 1: about to see what I'm going to do to Moses.
- 8:22Speaker 1: After the prolog he makes a statement. This statement beginning
- 8:26Speaker 1: in verse two, God spoke to Moses and said to him,
- 8:30Speaker 1: I am Yahweh, and I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and to Jacob as el Shaddai. But by my name Yahweh,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I did not make myself known to them. I also
- 8:49Speaker 1: established my covenant with them to give them the land
- 8:52Speaker 1: of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. Moreover,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I have heard the of the people of Israel, whom
- 9:03Speaker 1: the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant.
- 9:09Speaker 1: Say therefore, to the people of Israel, I am Yahweh,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and I will bring you out from under the burdens
- 9:16Speaker 1: of the Egyptians. And I will deliver you from slavery
- 9:20Speaker 1: to them. And I will redeem you with an outstretched
- 9:24Speaker 1: arm and with great acts of judgment. I will take
- 9:27Speaker 1: you to be my people, and I will be your God.
- 9:32Speaker 1: And you shall know that I am the Lord your God,
- 9:39Speaker 1: who has brought you out from under the burdens of
- 9:43Speaker 1: the Egyptians. I will bring you into the land that
- 9:48Speaker 1: I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.
- 9:52Speaker 1: I will give it to you for a possession. I
- 9:55Speaker 1: am Yahweh. Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel,
- 10:02Speaker 1: and then here it is, but they did not listen
- 10:06Speaker 1: to Moses because of their broken spirit and hearsh slavery.
- 10:19Speaker 1: There it is. I want you to understand something from
- 10:26Speaker 1: this text. I want you to see a picture of
- 10:30Speaker 1: where all doubt comes from and how you overcome it,
- 10:37Speaker 1: because I believe that that's what we see in this text.
- 10:40Speaker 1: This is a picture of the human condition. This is
- 10:44Speaker 1: a picture of why we doubt. And we know where
- 10:47Speaker 1: the doubt comes from because we know God's antidote to
- 10:50Speaker 1: the doubt. And we'll see that momentarily after this opening statement.
- 10:55Speaker 1: There are a couple of things. First, we see that
- 10:59Speaker 1: we doubt because we get who the Lord is, which
- 11:01Speaker 1: is why God begins by reminding Moses and then Israel
- 11:06Speaker 1: of who he is. Look at those verse two and three.
- 11:11Speaker 1: God spoke to Moses and said to him, I am
- 11:15Speaker 1: the Lord. I am Yahweh. I appeared to Abraham, to
- 11:21Speaker 1: Isaac and to Jacob. Ask God Almighty or El should
- 11:25Speaker 1: I but by my name the Lord Yahweh, I did
- 11:28Speaker 1: not make myself known to them. This is an important statement.
- 11:32Speaker 1: It's kind of a complicated statement, but there is a
- 11:36Speaker 1: triple reference here in this passage. When we look at
- 11:40Speaker 1: verses two through nine, three times he says I am Yahweh.
- 11:46Speaker 1: It frames his statement. First, before his statement to Moses,
- 11:51Speaker 1: he says, I am the Lord, I am Yahweh. And secondly,
- 11:55Speaker 1: before the statement that Moses is supposed to make to Israel,
- 11:58Speaker 1: he says, I am Yahweh. And at the end of
- 12:01Speaker 1: that statement he says I am Yahweh. Three times he
- 12:05Speaker 1: says it. That's significant, the fact that three times he
- 12:09Speaker 1: introduces himself and he uses this particular name for himself. However,
- 12:15Speaker 1: there is something a little confusing about the revelation of
- 12:19Speaker 1: this name, because he says I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and to Jacob as God Almighty or else should I
- 12:25Speaker 1: but by my name the Lord, by my name Yahweh,
- 12:29Speaker 1: I did not make myself known to them. This is
- 12:32Speaker 1: a problem. Why number one, Because that name is used
- 12:37Speaker 1: one hundred times in Genesis. So how is it that
- 12:41Speaker 1: God is saying I didn't make myself known by that name.
- 12:45Speaker 1: When the name is used one hundred times in Genesis,
- 12:48Speaker 1: surely you made himself known by that name if it's
- 12:50Speaker 1: used one hundred times in Genesis. Not only is it
- 12:52Speaker 1: used one hundred times in Genesis, but the name is
- 12:55Speaker 1: used by and with the patriarchs. It's used with Abraham,
- 13:01Speaker 1: for example. God's statement here is puzzling, brus Will says,
- 13:07Speaker 1: since previous biblical texts speak clearly of Abraham's knowledge of
- 13:11Speaker 1: the name Yahweh. Abraham uses the name himself Genesis fifteen
- 13:16Speaker 1: two and eight, and Yahweh declares it to Abraham in
- 13:20Speaker 1: Genesis fifteen seven, where he uses the same phrase, I
- 13:22Speaker 1: am Yahueh. So what does God mean when he says
- 13:27Speaker 1: to Moses, I did not reveal myself by this name
- 13:31Speaker 1: to your forefathers, Because it seems like he did reveal
- 13:35Speaker 1: himself by this name to the forefathers. It's two ways
- 13:40Speaker 1: of solving this problem. One way of solving this problem
- 13:45Speaker 1: that I believe is problematic is what's called the documentary hypothesis.
- 13:49Speaker 1: You've probably heard of, you know, JEPD theory and so
- 13:53Speaker 1: on and so forth, that there are multiple authors of
- 13:56Speaker 1: the Pentateuch, and they are different, actually not only multiple authors,
- 14:00Speaker 1: but there are multiple communities that came together to write
- 14:04Speaker 1: the Pentateuch, and you can tell who they are by
- 14:07Speaker 1: the way that they refer to God and so on
- 14:10Speaker 1: and so forth. And so the argument goes that when
- 14:13Speaker 1: this was being written by later communities, whoever it was
- 14:17Speaker 1: that wrote Genesis or whatever groups actually wrote Genesis, well,
- 14:21Speaker 1: this name had already been revealed to them when they
- 14:24Speaker 1: went back and wrote Genesis. And therefore there's this little
- 14:28Speaker 1: hiccup or contradiction when God says, here's where the name
- 14:31Speaker 1: was revealed. It's true that it wasn't revealed until the Exodus,
- 14:35Speaker 1: but they sort of went back into the Genesis account
- 14:37Speaker 1: when they wrote it and just added that name. That's
- 14:41Speaker 1: one way to look at it. It's problematic why Bible
- 14:45Speaker 1: says Moses wrote the Pentitude, and I believe Moses wrote
- 14:49Speaker 1: the Pentitude, Amen, Hallelujah, praise the Lord. Not a group
- 14:53Speaker 1: of individuals, not a group of communities. I believe Moses
- 14:57Speaker 1: wrote the Pentitude period, He's the a through the Pentitude. Well,
- 15:03Speaker 1: then what do you do with this apparent contradiction. Listen
- 15:11Speaker 1: to the way Calvin answers this question. Nor does God
- 15:15Speaker 1: by his name in this passage mean syllables or letters,
- 15:20Speaker 1: but the knowledge of His glory and majesty, which shone
- 15:24Speaker 1: out more fully and more brightly in the redemption of
- 15:27Speaker 1: his church than in the commencement of the Covenant. For
- 15:32Speaker 1: Abraham and the other patriarchs were content with a smaller
- 15:37Speaker 1: measure of light. Whence it follows that the fault of
- 15:41Speaker 1: their descendants would be less excusable in their faith if
- 15:46Speaker 1: their faith was not answerable to the increase of their grace. Meanwhile,
- 15:53Speaker 1: Moses is awakened to activity whilst God is setting before
- 15:58Speaker 1: him a magnificent and singular means of showing forth his glory.
- 16:06Speaker 1: They knew the word Yahweh, they didn't understanding the meaning.
- 16:12Speaker 1: They didn't understand the meaning of Yahweh. They knew that
- 16:19Speaker 1: God said, I am Yahweh. Had no idea what was
- 16:23Speaker 1: significant about this name Yahweh. It was only when God
- 16:28Speaker 1: revealed himself specifically and theologically to Moses and explained why
- 16:35Speaker 1: this name in particular was significant for him that Moses
- 16:39Speaker 1: had a more full orbed understanding of this term Yahweh.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Listen to Cassado when he writes, in defining this name,
- 16:49Speaker 1: this name means he who is with his creatures, and
- 16:52Speaker 1: he who was constantly the same, that is, he is
- 16:55Speaker 1: true to his word and fulfills his promises. That's what
- 16:58Speaker 1: this name means. I am Yahweh, and my action shall
- 17:02Speaker 1: be in keeping with my name. A similar interpretation attaches
- 17:06Speaker 1: to the phrase I am Yahweh wherever it occurs in
- 17:09Speaker 1: the Bible. It comes to link the statute or the
- 17:14Speaker 1: promise with the attributes of God implied in the name Yahweh,
- 17:19Speaker 1: the attributes of one who sees to it that the
- 17:22Speaker 1: moral law is observed and fulfills with absolute faithfulness what
- 17:27Speaker 1: he promises or what he announces before beforehand by his prophets.
- 17:33Speaker 1: In other words, that name Yahweh means I am the
- 17:35Speaker 1: God who keeps my covenant. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob didn't
- 17:39Speaker 1: really understand this. Abraham, Isaac and Jacob don't know who
- 17:43Speaker 1: God is. They know nothing about God. God reveals himself
- 17:46Speaker 1: to them and he says, I am God. He establishes
- 17:49Speaker 1: a covenant with them, and he makes a promise. They
- 17:54Speaker 1: do not understand, however, that his very name means every
- 17:58Speaker 1: promise I make I keep. His very name means I
- 18:04Speaker 1: am the one that you can count on because every
- 18:08Speaker 1: promise I make I keep that his very name is
- 18:11Speaker 1: a reflection of his very character as the covenant keeping God.
- 18:17Speaker 1: You see, God wasn't saying, here's the way that you
- 18:20Speaker 1: sort of keep me in line as opposed to the
- 18:22Speaker 1: other gods. God was saying, I am God, and there
- 18:26Speaker 1: is no other God. And my character is such that
- 18:32Speaker 1: my very name evokes the righteousness of my moral law.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Abraham didn't comprehend that the way that Moses would come
- 18:40Speaker 1: to comprehend it. And that's what God means when he says,
- 18:45Speaker 1: by this name, I didn't make myself known to them.
- 18:49Speaker 1: They didn't comprehend this name. And there is a reason
- 18:53Speaker 1: that they would not have comprehended this name in Genesis
- 18:57Speaker 1: the way it was comprehended in Exodus, because ultimately, this
- 19:03Speaker 1: covenant is about deliverance. It's sort of like a child
- 19:09Speaker 1: who grows up in a Christian home. The child grows
- 19:13Speaker 1: up in a Christian home and they hear the name Jesus,
- 19:18Speaker 1: and they grow up in this home and they're catechised,
- 19:21Speaker 1: and they go to church and they hear songs about
- 19:24Speaker 1: Jesus and Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus and they like the
- 19:28Speaker 1: name Jesus and come to love the name Jesus. Jesus
- 19:31Speaker 1: loves me. This I know, if the Bible tells me so.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Little ones to him belong. They're weak, but he is strong. Yes,
- 19:36Speaker 1: Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me.
- 19:39Speaker 1: The Bible tells me so. And they sing those songs
- 19:41Speaker 1: about Jesus, and they learn those truths about Jesus. And
- 19:47Speaker 1: yet one day their faith is no longer borrowed. Their
- 19:54Speaker 1: faith is no longer secondhand, Their faith is no longer
- 19:58Speaker 1: their parents' faith, but their faith is their own, and
- 20:02Speaker 1: they come to know Jesus and not just the name Jesus.
- 20:08Speaker 1: His name shall be called Jesus. Why because he will
- 20:11Speaker 1: save his people. It's not until you become one of
- 20:14Speaker 1: his saved people that you really understand his name. And basically,
- 20:24Speaker 1: what God is saying is Abraham, Isaac and Jacob compared
- 20:28Speaker 1: to you, Moses, and compared to what I have revealed
- 20:31Speaker 1: to you and will continue to reveal to you, Compared
- 20:34Speaker 1: to you their children who grew up in a house
- 20:38Speaker 1: saying a name that they did not comprehend. However, when
- 20:42Speaker 1: I do what I am going to do in with,
- 20:47Speaker 1: through and for Israel. You will know and understand my
- 20:52Speaker 1: name in a way that they never could have. That's
- 20:57Speaker 1: what he means. That's what he means. They used the name,
- 21:04Speaker 1: but you know the name. Secondly, not only do we
- 21:12Speaker 1: doubt because we do we doubt. We doubt when we
- 21:14Speaker 1: forget who God is. We doubt when we somehow, when
- 21:18Speaker 1: we somehow don't understand that just by his very nature,
- 21:21Speaker 1: God is the one who keeps his promises. We doubt
- 21:24Speaker 1: when we just forget the fact that by his very
- 21:26Speaker 1: nature God is sovereign, God is in control. Ultimately. That's
- 21:31Speaker 1: what doubt is. Is it not that somehow we believe
- 21:34Speaker 1: that there is an area that has fallen through the cracks.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Somehow we believe that there is an area that has
- 21:39Speaker 1: escaped God's view, or there's something that has slipped between
- 21:42Speaker 1: his fingers, or that somehow he has forgotten, or that
- 21:46Speaker 1: somehow he has lied. And the only way that we
- 21:48Speaker 1: can doubt like that is if we forget who he is.
- 21:53Speaker 1: When you know who he is, you know he does
- 21:55Speaker 1: not forget things. He neither slumbers nor sleeks. That God
- 22:01Speaker 1: is never late, but he's always right on time. When
- 22:05Speaker 1: you understand who he is, there is no room for doubt.
- 22:10Speaker 1: But beyond knowing who he is, we also doubt because
- 22:13Speaker 1: we forget what he has done. Verses four and five
- 22:16Speaker 1: allude to this. I also established my covenant with them
- 22:21Speaker 1: to give them the land of Canaan, the land in
- 22:25Speaker 1: which they lived at sojournals. Moreover, I have heard the
- 22:29Speaker 1: groaning of the people of Israel, whom the Egyptians hold
- 22:32Speaker 1: as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. First, God
- 22:36Speaker 1: is reminding Moses of their first meeting. That ought to
- 22:39Speaker 1: sound familiar to you. When God first encounters Moses, he
- 22:45Speaker 1: says these same words, I've seen, I've heard, I remember it,
- 22:50Speaker 1: I've come. He says these same things. So God is
- 22:53Speaker 1: reminding Moses of what he has done. Secondly, God is
- 22:58Speaker 1: reminding Moses and Israel of his covenant. It's amazing we
- 23:03Speaker 1: talk about covenant, but there are two things that are
- 23:06Speaker 1: associated with the idea of covenant, and that is the
- 23:09Speaker 1: concept of revelation and redemption. Listen to what our Confession
- 23:13Speaker 1: says about covenant and Chapter seven, paragraph one. The distance
- 23:19Speaker 1: between God and the creature is so great that all
- 23:23Speaker 1: though reasonable creatures do oh obedience under him as their creator.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yet they could never have attained the reward of life
- 23:34Speaker 1: but by some voluntary condescension on God's part, which he
- 23:39Speaker 1: had been pleased to express by way of covenant. You
- 23:46Speaker 1: can't know God unless he reveals himself to you. Sure,
- 23:51Speaker 1: the heavens declare the glory of God, and you look
- 23:53Speaker 1: out at the heavens, and you look at the world,
- 23:55Speaker 1: and it says to you, there is a creator, and
- 23:57Speaker 1: you're without excuse. However, you don't know who he is.
- 24:01Speaker 1: You don't know his name unless he condescends to you
- 24:05Speaker 1: and reveals himself. And the covenant is the means by
- 24:08Speaker 1: which God reveals himself. So when he reminds Moses of
- 24:13Speaker 1: this covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, what he is
- 24:15Speaker 1: saying is I revealed myself to Abraham and to Isaac
- 24:20Speaker 1: and to Jacob in ways that I did not reveal
- 24:22Speaker 1: myself to the rest of the world. Not everyone has
- 24:27Speaker 1: access to the same revelation, but God reveals himself uniquely
- 24:33Speaker 1: to his covenant people. And so first and foremost, he's
- 24:38Speaker 1: reminding him of the fact that God revealed himself. And secondly,
- 24:42Speaker 1: there's this idea of redemption covenant means redemption. God shows Abraham,
- 24:50Speaker 1: not the rest of the world. He redeemed Abraham. There
- 24:56Speaker 1: are other individuals that could have been redeemed by God
- 24:59Speaker 1: for this purpose, but they weren't Abraham was. Secondly, God
- 25:03Speaker 1: turned a barren couple into parents. God did that for
- 25:07Speaker 1: his purpose of redemption. Thirdly, he turned a man into
- 25:11Speaker 1: a nation. God did that for his own purpose in redemption,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and God turned to that nation's time of need into
- 25:21Speaker 1: their time of deliverance. God does that for Israel, and
- 25:26Speaker 1: he reminds Moses of that. God also rebukes Moses and
- 25:32Speaker 1: Israel for their doubt, and they need to be rebuked
- 25:36Speaker 1: for their doubt. How does he rebuke him simply by
- 25:40Speaker 1: reminding them of who he is? You've forgotten who I
- 25:43Speaker 1: am is Israel says, you made it hard for us.
- 25:49Speaker 1: What's wrong with you? You came and you spoke to Pharaoh,
- 25:51Speaker 1: and now all of a sudden things are harder for us.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Moses turns to God, Why have you done evil against
- 25:57Speaker 1: these people? Look at what Pharaoh did, the evil he
- 26:00Speaker 1: did to them. How could you do this to them?
- 26:01Speaker 1: And God says, hold on, son, First of all, I'm God.
- 26:08Speaker 1: You seem to have forgotten that, but I'm gonna let
- 26:11Speaker 1: that one slide. Secondly, i am the God who made
- 26:16Speaker 1: a covenant with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. Thirdly, I'm
- 26:21Speaker 1: the God who promised something to these people. And Fourthly,
- 26:26Speaker 1: I'm the God who remembered my covenant and came and
- 26:29Speaker 1: got you so that my people could be delivered. Or
- 26:33Speaker 1: have you forgotten why we started this conversation in the
- 26:36Speaker 1: first place. This is a gentle rebuke. It's better than
- 26:45Speaker 1: the last one. Amen. This is one of those rebukes
- 26:49Speaker 1: where at the end of it you kind of go,
- 26:53Speaker 1: I just got rebuked, didn't I Yes, you did, Yes,
- 26:58Speaker 1: you did. You See, God doesn't owe us anything, and
- 27:09Speaker 1: yet he has revealed himself to us, and he has
- 27:15Speaker 1: redeemed us, and he's in the process of redeeming us,
- 27:19Speaker 1: regardless of what it is that we're experiencing. Thirdly, we
- 27:26Speaker 1: doubt because we don't believe what the Lord has promised.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Look at verses six through eight save therefore to the
- 27:36Speaker 1: people of Israel. I am the Lord. I am Yahweh,
- 27:39Speaker 1: and I will bring you out that this is framed
- 27:44Speaker 1: by I am the Lord on the beginning and the end.
- 27:48Speaker 1: So he's going back to remind them of who I am.
- 27:51Speaker 1: That I'm God. By the way, there's no other explanation
- 27:55Speaker 1: needed than I am God. Amen. That's kind of like
- 27:59Speaker 1: when you your parents tell you something, you go, why
- 28:02Speaker 1: do I have to do that? Because I told you so? Well,
- 28:06Speaker 1: what I have to do what you tell me? Because
- 28:07Speaker 1: I'm your daddy. Well uh uh, that's enough. That's enough.
- 28:20Speaker 1: I am the Lord. That's enough. He says it at
- 28:25Speaker 1: the beginning and the end. But in the middle again,
- 28:31Speaker 1: remember three times, I am the Lord. And in the
- 28:34Speaker 1: middle of that seven promises, another very important number in scriptures.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Look at those promises. I will bring you out from
- 28:46Speaker 1: under the burden of the Egyptians. What's their worry? You
- 28:51Speaker 1: spoke to Pharaoh and our burden got heavier. I'm God.
- 28:55Speaker 1: I will bring you out from under the burden of
- 28:57Speaker 1: the Egyptians. Number two, I will deliver you from slavery
- 29:02Speaker 1: to them. Number three, I will redeem you with an
- 29:06Speaker 1: outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. Number four,
- 29:12Speaker 1: I will take you to be my people. Number five,
- 29:16Speaker 1: I will be your God, and you shall know that
- 29:18Speaker 1: I am the Lord, your God, who has brought you
- 29:21Speaker 1: out from under the burden of the Egyptians. When I
- 29:24Speaker 1: do it, you'll know I did it. Number six, I
- 29:29Speaker 1: will bring you into the land that I swore to
- 29:31Speaker 1: give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. And number seven, I
- 29:34Speaker 1: will give it to you for a possession. I'm not
- 29:40Speaker 1: just going to bring you out. I'm going to bring
- 29:42Speaker 1: you in. I'm not just going to bring you out
- 29:45Speaker 1: and bring you in, but I'm going to bring you out,
- 29:47Speaker 1: take you as my own, be your God uniquely specifically,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and bring you into this land that I promised. And
- 29:58Speaker 1: how does he end it? I and yahweh. Why do
- 30:06Speaker 1: we doubt? We doubt because we forget who God is,
- 30:12Speaker 1: Because if we've remembered who God was, there would be
- 30:16Speaker 1: no room for doubt. We doubt because we forget what
- 30:23Speaker 1: God has done, because if we remembered what God has done,
- 30:29Speaker 1: if we remembered God's covenant, if we remembered God's redemption again,
- 30:35Speaker 1: where would there be room for doubt? And then thirdly,
- 30:41Speaker 1: again we do we forget what God has promised. We
- 30:45Speaker 1: forget that God has not done with us. We forget
- 30:49Speaker 1: that Jesus said, I go to prepare a place for you, amen,
- 30:55Speaker 1: that there is more ahead. We forget that He's coming again,
- 30:59Speaker 1: that judge the living in the dead, and then he
- 31:01Speaker 1: will make all things right. We forget that. That's why
- 31:04Speaker 1: we doubt, because we forget that. But lest we be
- 31:10Speaker 1: flippant and they go, oh yeah, that's right, Yeah, all
- 31:14Speaker 1: I have to do is just have those facts. Look
- 31:16Speaker 1: at what happens. Because they get those facts, and they
- 31:19Speaker 1: don't get those facts, they get those facts from God.
- 31:23Speaker 1: God says to Moses, I am the Lord, and you're
- 31:28Speaker 1: gonna know me better than Abraham, Isaac and Jacob knew me.
- 31:32Speaker 1: I'm revealing myself and my character you character to you
- 31:35Speaker 1: in ways that they couldn't even comprehend. I'm God. You
- 31:39Speaker 1: need to know me as God and you won't doubt. Secondly,
- 31:42Speaker 1: you need to remember what I've done. Remember the covenant
- 31:44Speaker 1: that I made. I'm the guy who made that covenant.
- 31:47Speaker 1: I'm the one who came and got you. You didn't
- 31:48Speaker 1: come and get me, Moses, you were keeping sheep on
- 31:51Speaker 1: the other side of the mountain. I came and got you.
- 31:53Speaker 1: I made that bush burn. I got your attention, you
- 31:56Speaker 1: didn't get mine. Thirdly, tell the people that this is
- 32:03Speaker 1: what I'm going to do. And Moses comes down armed
- 32:07Speaker 1: with the word of God, and armed with the word
- 32:11Speaker 1: of God, the prophet of God speaks to the people
- 32:14Speaker 1: of God this powerful word, reminding them of who God is,
- 32:18Speaker 1: what He's done, and what he's promised. And the people
- 32:20Speaker 1: of God respond. Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel,
- 32:25Speaker 1: but they did not listen to Moses because of their
- 32:28Speaker 1: broken spirit and hearsh slavery. God spoke directly to Moses,
- 32:42Speaker 1: and Moses brought that word to the people. Because of
- 32:48Speaker 1: their broken spirit and because of their circumstances, they wouldn't
- 32:56Speaker 1: believe what Moses said. This heavy burden, this is real.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Your promise is not real right now, Moses, Pharaoh, he's real.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Your God is not real now, Moses, your God says
- 33:18Speaker 1: he's gonna do ABC and X y Z Pharaoh did
- 33:22Speaker 1: what he was gonna do. We got no straw man.
- 33:28Speaker 1: This is real. That's pie in the sky stuff. This
- 33:31Speaker 1: is real. My pain is real, my heartache is real,
- 33:35Speaker 1: my circumstances are real, my frustration is real, my fear
- 33:40Speaker 1: is real. And right now it's more real to me
- 33:43Speaker 1: than who you say God is and what you say
- 33:46Speaker 1: God has done and what you say God has promised.
- 33:48Speaker 1: That's you and me that's where the burber meets the road.
- 33:57Speaker 1: That's the real Christian life. That's us. And because we
- 34:03Speaker 1: don't understand that this is the real Christian life, here's
- 34:06Speaker 1: what happens. We get to that place and we think
- 34:09Speaker 1: there's something wrong with us, there's something wrong with me.
- 34:12Speaker 1: Because if there wasn't something wrong with me, I wouldn't
- 34:15Speaker 1: respond this way. Listen, same thing's wrong with you, that
- 34:18Speaker 1: was wrong with them. You're falling and living in this
- 34:27Speaker 1: world is difficult. Information and rebuke. That's not enough. Granted,
- 34:37Speaker 1: we need information, Granted we need rebuke, but that's not enough.
- 34:42Speaker 1: We need the presence and power of the Spirit of
- 34:44Speaker 1: God in our lives, and we need him to act mercifully.
- 34:51Speaker 1: And we also need to be reminded. Israel would have
- 34:56Speaker 1: to hear this same thing again and again and again
- 35:00Speaker 1: and again and again. Listen, Saints, don't think so much
- 35:05Speaker 1: of yourself that you get frustrated because you have to
- 35:09Speaker 1: be reminded. That's arrogance. What's the matter, fellow Christian? Oh,
- 35:18Speaker 1: I'm just down. Why are you so down, fellow Christian? Well,
- 35:21Speaker 1: because something happened in my life and I doubted again, really,
- 35:26Speaker 1: fellow Christian, because Christians doubt things. Yes, but I should
- 35:30Speaker 1: be more mature than that. By now. I should be
- 35:33Speaker 1: at a place in my life where I stop. Right now,
- 35:37Speaker 1: are you saying, dear Christian, that you should be at
- 35:41Speaker 1: a place in your life where you don't need to
- 35:42Speaker 1: be reminded again and again and again. Don't say that. First,
- 35:49Speaker 1: let me read some things for you Romans fifteen fifteen.
- 35:54Speaker 1: But I'm on some points. I have written to you
- 35:57Speaker 1: very boldly by way of reminder, because of the grace
- 36:01Speaker 1: given me by God. First Corinthians four seventeen. This is
- 36:05Speaker 1: why I sent you, Timothy, my beloved and faithful child
- 36:09Speaker 1: in the Lord, to remind you of my ways in Christ,
- 36:13Speaker 1: as I teach them everywhere in every church. One Corinthians
- 36:18Speaker 1: fifteen one. Now I would remind you, brothers of the
- 36:21Speaker 1: gospel I preach to you, which you received, in which
- 36:24Speaker 1: you stand tewod Corinthians ten to seven. Look at what
- 36:28Speaker 1: is before your eyes. If anyone is confident that he
- 36:32Speaker 1: is Christ's, let him remind himself that just as he
- 36:37Speaker 1: is Christ's, so also are we Second Peter one twelve
- 36:41Speaker 1: and thirteen. Therefore I intend always to remind you of
- 36:46Speaker 1: these qualities. Second Peter three, No, let me finish twelve, twelve,
- 36:53Speaker 1: and thirteen remind you of these qualities, though you know
- 36:55Speaker 1: them and are established in the truth that you have.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I think it right as long as I am in
- 37:02Speaker 1: this body to stir you up by way of reminder
- 37:06Speaker 1: tewod Peter three to one. This is now the second
- 37:11Speaker 1: letter that I am writing to you, beloved, and both
- 37:13Speaker 1: of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by
- 37:17Speaker 1: way of reminder. And finally, Jude five, now I want
- 37:24Speaker 1: to remind you, although you once fully knew it that
- 37:29Speaker 1: Jesus who saved a people out of the land of Egypt,
- 37:33Speaker 1: afterward destroyed those who did not believe. Reminder, Reminder, reminder.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Why do we need to sit under the ordinary means
- 37:47Speaker 1: of grace every week in church because we need to
- 37:55Speaker 1: be reminded. Why do we need to be reminded of
- 38:02Speaker 1: the Gospel because we forget faith comes by hearing and
- 38:07Speaker 1: hearing by the Word of Christ. Why do we need
- 38:11Speaker 1: to read the Word regularly, pray the word regularly, sing
- 38:16Speaker 1: the word regularly? Why do we need to come before
- 38:19Speaker 1: the Lord's table week in and week out because we
- 38:23Speaker 1: need to be reminded again and again and again, because
- 38:28Speaker 1: the yoke of your oppression is a constant reminder, and
- 38:33Speaker 1: you need the Word of God as a constant reminder.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Because the difficulties that you face every day are a reminder,
- 38:41Speaker 1: and so you need the Word of God as a reminder.
- 38:44Speaker 1: The hardness of life is a reminder, and so you
- 38:48Speaker 1: need the preaching of the Gospel as a reminder. The
- 38:53Speaker 1: disappointment of your sinfulness is a reminder. So you need
- 38:58Speaker 1: the majesty of Christ put forth before you again and
- 39:02Speaker 1: again and again as a reminder. Christianity is not a
- 39:08Speaker 1: class you take and pass. It's your life. It's your breath,
- 39:18Speaker 1: your health, your strength, your everything. And you must be reminded.
- 39:24Speaker 1: I must be reminded because every time difficulty smacks you
- 39:30Speaker 1: or me in the face, our natural tendency is not
- 39:34Speaker 1: to remember who God is, what He's done, and what
- 39:36Speaker 1: He's promised. Our natural tendency is to say, this is
- 39:42Speaker 1: too much for me. I just can't believe right now.
- 39:47Speaker 1: This is why there's no such thing as a lone
- 39:49Speaker 1: ranger christian You can't do this on your own. You
- 39:55Speaker 1: weren't meant to do this on your own. You're not
- 39:58Speaker 1: capable of doing this on your own. You need someone
- 40:03Speaker 1: to remind you, You need to remind yourself, and you
- 40:07Speaker 1: need to remind somebody else. Amazing things happen when we
- 40:12Speaker 1: remind other people of things. This happens all the time.
- 40:17Speaker 1: One of the things, you know, as pastors we talk
- 40:19Speaker 1: about all the time, how you know you're sitting and
- 40:22Speaker 1: you're dealing with some situation, and you're helping someone with
- 40:25Speaker 1: some situation, and you're looking at these things objectively, and
- 40:28Speaker 1: you're reminding these people of these things objectively, And all
- 40:31Speaker 1: of a sudden, in the middle of being the objective
- 40:34Speaker 1: voice reminding people of these things, you go, you know,
- 40:38Speaker 1: you're doing really good. What is sometimes while we're talking
- 40:40Speaker 1: to you, you're doing really good talking to them. That's awesome, man,
- 40:46Speaker 1: Where was all that stuff the other day when you
- 40:51Speaker 1: had your own difficulties and your own doubts. That means
- 41:02Speaker 1: it is a blessing to be part of the body
- 41:06Speaker 1: to have people remind us again and again and again.
- 41:09Speaker 1: It is a blessing when we gather as believers to
- 41:12Speaker 1: be reminded again and again and again. But it is
- 41:15Speaker 1: also a blessing to remind your brothers and sisters in
- 41:19Speaker 1: Christ because oftentimes you need to hear those words fall
- 41:23Speaker 1: out of your own mouth so that you can remember
- 41:32Speaker 1: why the wheels fell off? Why did I say that
- 41:37Speaker 1: thing I shouldn't have said? Here's why. I wouldn't hold
- 41:42Speaker 1: it under this? Why did that do that thing I
- 41:45Speaker 1: shouldn't have done. Here's why, because I wouldn't hold it
- 41:48Speaker 1: onto this. Why did I act the way I shouldn't
- 41:52Speaker 1: have acted? Here's why because I wasn't holding on to this?
- 42:02Speaker 1: Who is God? What has he done? What has he promised?
- 42:11Speaker 1: My prayer for you, for me, for all of us,
- 42:16Speaker 1: is that as we walk through the difficulties of our lives,
- 42:21Speaker 1: and our lives will be fraught with difficulties, that as
- 42:25Speaker 1: we face each one of them, we will ask ourselves
- 42:29Speaker 1: who is God? What has he done? What has he promised?
- 42:39Speaker 1: I'm struggling with something right now. It's hurting me. What
- 42:43Speaker 1: I need to do? You need to ask yourself, who
- 42:45Speaker 1: is God? What has he done? What has he promised?
- 42:51Speaker 1: I got some news that overwhelmed me. How do I
- 42:55Speaker 1: face it? You ask yourself? Who is God? What has
- 42:59Speaker 1: he done? What is promised? I've got a task in
- 43:03Speaker 1: front of me that I have no idea how I
- 43:06Speaker 1: can accomplish, what do I do? You ask yourself, who
- 43:09Speaker 1: is God? What has he done? And what has he promised?
- 43:16Speaker 1: And what happens when that doesn't work? Rent and repeat.
- 43:29Speaker 1: It's just real easy to get caught up in this
- 43:33Speaker 1: idea of this Christianity that makes us invincible. It's really
- 43:41Speaker 1: easy to get caught up in this kind of Christianity
- 43:45Speaker 1: that never has a bad day, or at least never
- 43:47Speaker 1: admits it. It's real easy to get caught up in
- 43:51Speaker 1: this christian how are you I'm blessed of highly favored,
- 43:57Speaker 1: and never answer the question with now I'm struggling today.
- 44:05Speaker 1: The problem with getting caught up in that myth of
- 44:09Speaker 1: Christianity is that it leaves you nowhere to go in
- 44:15Speaker 1: your dark days. But to your darkness. You can't admit
- 44:20Speaker 1: that you're struggling. You can't ask for help when you're struggling,
- 44:26Speaker 1: and you can't get out of your struggle because all
- 44:30Speaker 1: you have is your struggle and the idea that there's
- 44:34Speaker 1: something wrong with you because you're a Christian who's in
- 44:38Speaker 1: the midst of a struggle. Let that go. Let that go,
- 44:47Speaker 1: and rejoice in the fact that God has given you
- 44:50Speaker 1: this one day and seven that he has given you
- 44:53Speaker 1: your Bible, that He has given you your brothers and
- 44:55Speaker 1: sisters in Christ, and so much more. In order to
- 45:00Speaker 1: remind you again and again and again and again why
- 45:09Speaker 1: because we need it. We need it. We need to
- 45:20Speaker 1: be reminded Christ died for sin, once for all, the just,
- 45:25Speaker 1: for the unjust, in order that He might bring us
- 45:27Speaker 1: back to God. We need to be reminded of that.
- 45:31Speaker 1: We need to be reminded that because we have come
- 45:34Speaker 1: to Him in repentance and faith, that we are part
- 45:37Speaker 1: of the covenant people of God, that we are saved,
- 45:40Speaker 1: and that we are in the process of being sanctified
- 45:42Speaker 1: and we will one day be glorified. We need to
- 45:44Speaker 1: be reminded that Christ will, he who began a good
- 45:48Speaker 1: work in you, is able and faithful to see it
- 45:51Speaker 1: through to completion. You need to be reminded of that. Christian,
- 46:00Speaker 1: And if you're not a Christian, you need to be
- 46:03Speaker 1: reminded of that, because if you're not a Christian, that
- 46:06Speaker 1: means you're trusting in something other than the completed work
- 46:08Speaker 1: of Christ, and you're failing, and it's failing, and it's
- 46:15Speaker 1: not enough for you to just fail. You need to
- 46:17Speaker 1: be reminded over and over and over again. Why you're
- 46:20Speaker 1: failing because Christ is your only hope. Flee to him,
- 46:27Speaker 1: cling to him, trust in him and nothing else, and
- 46:32Speaker 1: don't leave here another week without embracing and walking in
- 46:37Speaker 1: that reality.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Let's pray, Dear Father, we bow before you as a
- 46:56Speaker 2: humble and needy people, by before you as a broken people,
- 47:04Speaker 2: and yet we buy before you as a forgiven people,
- 47:09Speaker 2: as a grateful people.
- 47:13Speaker 1: Grateful that although we need reminders, we serve a God
- 47:24Speaker 1: who delights in reminding us. Grateful that although we despair,
- 47:34Speaker 1: we serve a God who delights in pointing us to hope.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Grateful that although we disbelieve, we serve a God who
- 47:47Speaker 1: helps our unbelief. Grant by your grace that we would
- 47:55Speaker 1: embrace the reality of the Christian life and its struggles,
- 48:00Speaker 1: and rejoice in the provision that you have made. Thank
- 48:06Speaker 1: you for Christ, who is our only hope. Thank you
- 48:12Speaker 1: for this meal in which we are about to partake.
- 48:18Speaker 1: That reminds us again and again, week in and week
- 48:22Speaker 1: out that just as our bodies need food, spiritually, we
- 48:27Speaker 1: must feed on Christ. That reminds us again and again
- 48:33Speaker 1: that his broken body and his shed blood are indeed
- 48:36Speaker 1: our only hope, and that that hope is sufficient because
- 48:43Speaker 1: Christ is sufficient. As we turn our attention to the
- 48:49Speaker 1: Lord's table, grant by your grace that we might rejoice
- 48:54Speaker 1: in Christ, and whose name we pray and ask all
- 48:58Speaker 1: these things amen. But in a moment we will partake
- 49:04Speaker 1: the word supper.
