- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the once a week podcast brought to you by you
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: and I'm monitoring my own podcast and another thing which isn't great.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Today I'm going to start off with the opening topic and I've ran through all
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: of my great questions I got this week.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: A little down for the count,
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: a little physically, I wouldn't say sick, but just physically drained and tired.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So the once a week podcast is coming out a little earlier
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: because I don't really have a ton to do today and I'm just putting it out.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: So that's what it is.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: If you had extra questions, maybe we will get a, um,
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: A podcast later this week, a paywall podcast.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: In theory, it should be a pretty good fight week.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: So there more than likely will be a Friday podcast.
- 1:05SPEAKER_00: So I'll take your best questions that day.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: But I do think I got some very good ones.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So I don't think you'll feel cheated.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: Let's start with my big topic.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: And it is when is a stoppage too soon?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And it's a great and timely question because we saw possibly two examples of
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: when stoppages happen too soon.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: But in two different
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: In the case of Fabio Wardley,
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: I think that after the fact,
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: my suspicions I had,
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: which I'm controversially, I don't love being right about boxing all the time.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: I love the magic of boxing.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: I love being wrong.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: There's intrigue to that.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: There's excitement around not always getting it right.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: That's what keeps me coming back.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: But with that fight, my suspicions were kind of confirmed.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: And what I was worried about is,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Wardley, and I said this on the podcast, but Wardley had taken a lot of damage.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: And then you come back to training camp more than likely a month and a half
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: to two months after the most brutal beating.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: And there's physical effects, there's mental effects.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: There's just a lot that weighs into coming back from a bad stoppage.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: And then you're going in with the guy that Did it to you.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: You probably started as good as you could have started in that fight.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: And, you know,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: now in the second fight,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: the fight basically was over with the first right hand that Dubois landed and then
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: the fight just went downhill.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Looked like Oh,
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: my like second or third viewing of the fight that Wardley was just trying
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: to circle out right,
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: land a big right hand and Dubois was just patient, jab right hand catches him.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And then the fight's essentially over because Wardley's willingness to exchange was gone.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: He was more so there just trying to ride out a storm and that storm was just too big.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: It was like that movie, The Perfect Storm.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: So in that instance, I saw a lot of people going, well, the towel came in too soon.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And it's like, that's,
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: I think with no,
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: No knowledge of the team,
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: but you have to think this fight was taken partially because of the large amount
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: of money that was on the table for Wardley.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And Wardley couldn't say no to it because it was such a big opportunity.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And the fighting spirit he has,
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: there's no way he's going to be like, okay,
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: there's this big sum of money and I can get my rematch with the guy that beat me.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And management and whatever helped decide that, right?
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: But if you're a trainer and Ben Davison and his team,
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: I'm sure you're confident you're going to win.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: But in the back of your mind,
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: you're also probably thinking this dude just took a lot of punches in
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: the first fight.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And if this fight starts to get out of control,
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: what was the criticism with Davison in the first fight was,
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: oh, he threw the towel in too soon.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: In the second fight, now he, or he threw it in too late.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: In the second fight, oh, he threw it in too soon.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: We got to pick which way it is, right?
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: Because in the first fight,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: I think Davison Gave him every benefit of the doubt because he had always kind
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: of rallied back late and then it was too much.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And I think that beating kind of changed hardly for the rest of his career.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: For this fight,
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: he gave him no benefit of the doubt because it just simply looked like a tired,
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: older fighter who was exhausted from a brutal first fight.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So I'm not mad at it, but I feel as though people expected a fight that wasn't going to happen.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: And that comes down to like, you know, physical bodies are different, you know, people, people.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Respond to punches differently.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And there is a fatigue coming off of these huge fights that sets into your body and
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: a depression and all different types of things.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: And I think that people were too willing to just be like,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: dude, the first fight was a good fight.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: This is this rematch is going to be electric.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: And what happened is Dubois is just a bad matchup.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: And I think it comes down to what I brought brought up is Even
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: when Dubois loses focus,
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: his big thing is he has a really good jab and he jabs under duress and he has
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: a really good right hand.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: He has limitations,
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: but that's kind of his thing is that he jabs with you and throws a right hand.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And, you know, Wardley kind of thrives in chaos when guys go away from fundamentals.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: So I wasn't mad at that stoppage and I honestly wasn't mad at
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: the Erlam Hadjabij stoppage either, which came at the last second.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: With Fendora,
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: because after the seventh round,
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: it felt inevitable that Fendora was going to win the fight.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Now it was just a moral victory.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And it always feels like when a guy that you've never heard of fights
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: a highly ranked fighter and you assume that the fight's going
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: to be like just dominant and it's going to be an easy win,
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: that the fight always turns out to be some bullcrap.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Just how it always feels like it goes.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And, you know, that frustration to me...
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And that experience, right?
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: I sort of expected this to be a 12-round decision.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And by all accounts, it could have been.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: But I also think that it's the emotion of the moment and fighters being fighters
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: where they wanted I wanted to see the guy that lasted every bit of the fight,
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: except for one second,
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: get the fighters nod of he made it all the way to the final bell.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And there is something to that.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And I get that there's financial benefits that can come with that and other things.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: But I think the other thing that no one talks about with Thomas Taylor,
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: and I get the frustration because it was a very emotional finish.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: It's like he gets dropped,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: he gets to his feet,
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Taylor makes a split second decision and says, okay, you're not good.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: It kind of felt like a letdown that he should have given him that,
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: okay, you lost unanimous decision as opposed to a knockout in the very last second.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: One thing that I'll say is Thomas Taylor's job is to look at the fighter void of context.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: You have to look at what's going on in that very second and assess it
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: without saying, okay, the fight's over, this and that.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And I'm not in the ring.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: So for all we know, That could have been the right decision.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: And I think we just live in an era where emotions are high.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: It was, you know,
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: I think that Fendora,
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: it was a disappointing performance for him because obviously
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: when you fight someone who's not critically acclaimed,
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: it's probably going to be a hard fight for you nine times out of ten.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: Because, you know, where's your motivation for a guy like this?
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: You're not going to get the credit.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: It felt like the first half of the fight was fairly even.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Then Fundora just decided to win the fight.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: He's like, okay, I'm going to break you down.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: The guy, Ermel, fought as good as he could.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: And then Fundora takes that second half.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: It was kind of like the Gervonta Davis versus Frank Martin.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Tank fought him with his B game for the first half of the fight.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: And then he turned it up and then wins the fight, right?
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: So in that fight, now we're talking about the stoppage is too late or is too soon.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Once again,
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: but it's the final second of the fight and it's less about the outcome and more so
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: about I wanted to see this guy get like an honorary victory.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: He made it all the rounds.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: And...
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: I think that that's also tricky because in this sport,
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: there are those moments, right,
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: for notable insiders,
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: where you do want to see someone,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: okay, he went the rounds, that's impressive, that's like a victory in and of itself.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: But we don't want to lose the point that Ermel was losing every minute of the fight
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: after round seven, that he wasn't competitive enough.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: And that the referee's job is to protect the fighter.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: And I get that the bell had rung and the fight was over, theoretically.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: But I also feel like this is an era
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: where people are just too comfortable just saying stuff and not thinking about
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: if they were in that position,
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: how would you assess it given the criteria put forth for you to be a professional?
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, another one.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Let's go into my questions this week.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: It starts with a viral barbecue and boxing or boxing and barbecue.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: I forget which way it goes.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: They've built a pretty strong social media following.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Shout out to those guys.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: I think I've met them.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: I met one of them that runs the account.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: He asked Diego Pacheco about like some Kobe Bryant quote backstage after
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: an indifferent Kevin Saggio performance.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: But they've interviewed Britton Harden.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: I believe his name is Britton Harden.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: That'd be terrible.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: A DAZN executive.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And he's been kind of like the North American face of DAZN where he does interviews and talks.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: And I think he, if I remember right, he comes from OTX Boxing.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And OTX Boxing faced some criticism because it was like they did these kind of like and one.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And I guess maybe and one evolved into what OTX was.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: But it was like, we're showing up to your gym and don't get embarrassed.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And it kind of like...
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: It felt like outsider boxing, if we're going to be honest.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: So the criticism I would have had of OTX boxing was it didn't feel like
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: a lifelong boxing practitioner's vision of boxing.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: It felt like someone coming from another sport being like, okay, man, don't get embarrassed.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: Don't get humiliated.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: We're going to bring the cameras to this gym.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And if you don't got it, you're going to get put on the internet.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: And I think that the point that was missed with those type of videos
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: and why they didn't even take off very well,
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: at least to hardcore enthusiasts, is boxing is humiliating.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: And everyone gets humiliated in boxing and everyone has bad days.
- 10:55SPEAKER_00: And if you live it,
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: you have to learn how to help people grow and fight through the humiliation
- 10:59SPEAKER_00: and fight weather these storms.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: And that type of content just kind of...
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: First off,
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: if you own a boxing gym,
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: the number one rule is you don't let the clients spar because more
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: than likely they'll never come back again, right?
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: So that type of content,
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I think,
- 11:17SPEAKER_00: initially rubbed old school guys the wrong way because it just looked goofy
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: because we understand the sentiment.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And I shouldn't say we because I'm maybe not an old school guy,
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: but the sentiment, I get it, right?
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: The sentiment is, you know, fight your best.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And if you're not on,
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: here's some candid video showing a guy get beat up because he didn't have his
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: A game.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: I get it.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: The thing that most people don't get is that happens every day in the gym
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: and we don't talk about it because there's kind of like a code of dignity
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: in boxing amongst kind of like what I'd call the real guys where you don't talk
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: about it.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: We all know who's getting the better of the work amongst everybody, at least in my region.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: I know who's doing real good in the gym because everyone tells everybody,
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: but we don't broadcast it because there's a level of respect.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: And at some points,
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: those guys that are struggling actually get better and become the guys
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: and you don't broadcast it.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: So that was initially a weird entry point.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: And then I saw like this viral clip about Tapping into fighters' interests.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: And I don't disagree with it, right?
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: So I think the clip the executive said,
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Harden said,
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: about some boxers might be surfers into rock music and we won't play into that.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: And that's an interesting thing, right?
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: I'm actually into that.
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: I like writing stories.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: I like...
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Portraits on boxers.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: And I think that what makes a boxer a boxer is a really interesting
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: and important fabric for the sport.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: That being said,
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: I think the concern and why this question was brought up to me goes back to
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: that initial OTX sparring stuff,
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: which is, I think for every hardcore boxing fan, talent should always lead, right?
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: So we should always go, The platform is here to put on the best representations of TV fights.
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: And then from the best representations of TV fights,
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: those that excel, maybe we'll find out where they go.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: And it feels like with OTX, there was the, what outfit are you wearing coming into the arena?
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And there was a lot of cross-marketing stuff.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: And boxing fans are a very hardcore niche enthusiast.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: And I can't help,
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: I watched a Vice video about Jim Cornette talking about the Black Scorpion
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: and Jim Hurd being the WCW guy.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: And I know I'm not a big wrestling guy, but I like those 80s, 90s kind of folklore stories.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: And it almost feels like,
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: and I'm sure Harden's a real boxing guy,
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: but it feels like when corporate Kind of suit people come into boxing,
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: they miss a little bit of the point.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: And I think the fear is, I think Britton is a boxing guy.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: I think he's learned the boxing business, probably did a couple of fights or whatever and stuff.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Is the concern is this is something that really matters to a lot of people.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And that the fans want some ownership and equity in the sport.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: And they want it also to be the sport.
- 14:25SPEAKER_00: They don't always want it to be dressed up or dolled up as,
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: hey, look, this guy's relevant in other industries.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: I think that that video in this question being brought up to me was about
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: the concerns around, can boxing just be boxing?
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Can we just get good products and good fights?
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Do we have to always...
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And I think with DAZN having such a stronghold on the industry along
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: with Zufa Boxing on Paramount,
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: I think the video got too much traction and got a question in my mailbag basically
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: because there's concern that fights were not at the center of the conversation
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: as opposed to...
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: What do we call it?
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: As opposed to,
- 15:07SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: pop culture,
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: which I think people are like, dude, that's a little too close to influencer.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: Let's read the questions this week.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Anytime I've doubted Dalton Smith, he's proved me wrong.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Therefore, with a home advantage, I expect him to win.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Rion Foster, it's his fight to lose.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: A good boxer always beats a good puncher and all that.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Hard to look past Foster on points.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Great work.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: I remember Sherry from his time at Boxing News.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Your podcasts are essential listening as always.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: Steve Wellings, we got to Let's get Steve back.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I think Canelo Fight Week, let's get Steve back on.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Let's give Steve a full hour.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: I'm going to send Steve a message.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: Let me know in the comments if you enjoyed the Steve Willings podcast last month.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: I think we need Steve back.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: I like Fundora.
- 15:48SPEAKER_00: Beating boots would be a tough ask, but getting those belts unified is the priority.
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: Great take.
- 15:53SPEAKER_00: Trevor Sambrano.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: And Sambrano,
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: for those that don't know,
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: longtime Southern California coach who works in the DMG DMG Promotions Gym and is
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: with Brandon Adams was saying that Boots' chin may not be the same from
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: the Xander-Zayas fight and the Boots were close to getting knocked out.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Fundora is saying he was just brawling for fun.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Don't listen to the noise.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: Boots ices Fundora.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: I think I read that wrong, but like...
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: You know, Boots' chin is to be determined.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, Boots, there are some people that say Boots gets hit too often.
- 16:30SPEAKER_00: There are other people that say Boots rolls with the shots.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: So it's like a 50-50 who's in the right there.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Um...
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Fundora is one of these guys where it's like we need to see a different style at
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: a high level with him because now there's reasonable suspicion that
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: the distance might have been just fighting non-explosive guys
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: who might just come forward on you or he was just bored.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: I don't really know how to rate the performance.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: I kind of see Boots and Fundora in the same spot.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: I think Boots is more exciting to watch.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: I think Fundora is more visually like, whoa, who's that guy?
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: But they both have big questions around him.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: And then the one that have the fewest questions around, Virgil Ortiz, can't stay in the ring.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: So, you know, I think it's been an interesting era for that reason.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: What is the name of the Mexican fighter who beat Ricky Burns before Crawford?
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: Shuttleworth was just talking about him.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: I believe it was Ray Beltran.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: It's so much fun seeing the Brits being butthurt about Michael Gomez.
- 17:38SPEAKER_00: Draw more outreach needed for the Michael Gomez result.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: Wasn't even close.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Laugh my ass off.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: I just watched round 12 of O'Doherty versus Gomez Jr.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: So much fun watching Gomez mess it up,
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: throw nothing, showboat in the last 10 seconds, knowing what outcome will be.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Gomez walks out the ring.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: O'Doherty goes to check on him emotional and Gomez is going around arguing
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: with O'Doherty in his corner.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: You know who Michael Gomez reminds me of?
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: Junaid Boston.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: Act like a brat.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: The British judges will punish you for it.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: Gomez is basically the British version of Carlos Balderos.
- 18:14SPEAKER_00: He's not as good as Carlos.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: Carlos is a really, really good fighter.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: I told you Michael Gomez is a mess up.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's see.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Do we have more?
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Nope, not on that.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: Michael Gomez,
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: the result, I mean,
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: he probably won the fight,
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: but it's like one of these fights where it's like, just stamp the win.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: You know, but look, it's a good domestic fight.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: It never hurts when two guys have some controversy.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Gomez and Louie O'Doherty probably didn't have a bigger footprint in the world until this fight.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: So maybe like a little rivalry.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Some controversy around this fight could lead to them fighting in a main event in 2027.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: And I'd watch it.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: So, you know, that's something to say.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: Milan Pratt straight up hit East in the dick to survive the knockdowns.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: Really, really good fight, by the way.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: If you haven't seen that from France, Bobby Benton in the corner.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Justin Paldo won a split decision.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, he did.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: I still like that Kid Austin fight.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: I thought Charles Harris would win wide.
- 19:19SPEAKER_00: Lolo Harris.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: I actually...
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: I'm going to try to get Lolo on the pod this week.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: I'm going to try to get Lolo.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: Then some Keon Mizutier really tattooed his surname across his body.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Mizutier looks terrible.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: Can we have like a Mizutier appreciation?
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: I mean, a lot of people crapped on Mizutier this week in the mailbag,
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: said his physique looked bad.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: He's a 154 pounder essentially fighting at 168 because Charlo needed a tune-up fight.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Then he takes the fight with two weeks notice against Resendez.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: And he just didn't have the power to keep Resendez off him, but it was like a 6'4 type fight.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: And pretty impressive for a guy who's outgunned and not as talented to do a fight like that.
- 20:08SPEAKER_00: And for me, Resendez, just an absolutely horrible performance.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Some questions around Manny Robles.
- 20:14SPEAKER_00: Robles trained Sarai Boachuk too, who missed weight versus Michael Fox.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: Brandon Figueroa.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I mean, who knows, right?
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: I think that, I don't know.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: That's just like a trend.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: That's just something to monitor.
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: We'll just file that away.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: Uh, the Japanese fans are beginning to rebel against the WBA.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: We are going to see a lot more of this in the new prospects.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know what that fully means, but I guess whatever.
- 20:44SPEAKER_00: Um, God's not done.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: Brandon Figueroa, uh, is singing karaoke on fight week.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Um, comparisons to Manny Robles is Jim to Jamie Moore's Jim.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: So very low on Brandon Figueroa.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: Let's see what else we got here.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Is this the Figueroa Karaoke video?
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: There's like an X link.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Super slow internet, by the way.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so Tomoki Kamed is just greatly questioning whether...
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Brandon Figueroa was sick or not.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: I think he was because if you miss that big and you try to cut weight,
- 21:36SPEAKER_00: you're probably not going to feel good the next day.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Laugh my ass off.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Don't ask Marco Romero about Tommy Morrison.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: John Brown,
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: the coach of Marco Romero,
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: frequently contrasts their differences in discipline and character.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Basically saying that Marco is coachable and tough and Morrison wasn't.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: Okay, I mean,
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: the broadcast loved bringing up the comparison of the coach working
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: with Tommy Morrison,
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: so I thought there might be a fun story there,
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: but that's another lukie awkward question that was probably really bad.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Questions around people's boxing literacy.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Probably a shot kind of towards the Good Fight Post show.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: People might actually be illiterate at boxing.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: At the beginning of boxing matches, they show on the screen, read the rules.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: No three dot down rule can't be saved by the bell.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Yet we have some people that think.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Hardjabod should have been saved by the bell.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: I kind of talked about that in my opinion.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: I think that's the emotion of the moment, right?
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: I think that seeing an underdog and knowing how B-side fighters often get treated in
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: the sport of boxing,
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: I think people wanted him to get an honorary victory in that by going all 12 rounds.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: I turned off the Fundora fight in round three or four and switched to a live stream
- 22:54SPEAKER_00: who was saying they want to see Harjabaj again.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Do the people who talk and complain or praise even watch boxing?
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: It's as if they are functionally boxing illiterate.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: No, I wouldn't say that.
- 23:07SPEAKER_00: I'd say people didn't expect that type of performance from them.
- 23:13SPEAKER_00: When you have a fighter that you don't know a lot about, What's there to praise, right?
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: You don't know his story.
- 23:19SPEAKER_00: You don't know his journey.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: Probably don't even really know how to break down his fighting style.
- 23:24SPEAKER_00: So what more can you do than say, yeah, I want to see him back in the ring again.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: And that is, you know, I think that's why a lot of people say it.
- 23:35SPEAKER_00: For me, it's like, I think he's an interesting gatekeeper to contenders.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: If there's a guy making his run up to 154,
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: say Norman Jr. goes up to 154, him and Ermel Hodgebodge would be a really fun fight.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: And I'd be excited about that because the style contrast and you know
- 23:58SPEAKER_00: the certain level of there.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: Now let's go, I think I'm jumping the shark on the film study a little bit.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: So let's see if there is.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Nope.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: Film study.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: So I think I'm rocking and rolling this week a lot better than I usually do.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: So let me know if it feels that way.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Dan Gruber gets caught, drop, punches the canvas up.
- 24:25SPEAKER_00: Upset more at himself than anything one minute into round two.
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: The corner throws in the towel.
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: This week is unhinged.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: Adam Oldani alerts Amy Pooh to the towel and Pooh kicks the towel and rejects it.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: This is a big toker's take.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: They're crying over Amy Pooh's decision.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, for me,
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: just to summarize this, for me,
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: the issue,
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: That one reminded, there's like a lot of different things to unpack there.
- 25:00SPEAKER_00: But the thing that it reminded me of was Uri Foreman versus Miguel Cotto,
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: where the referee became the story.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: I forget the referee in that fight,
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: but it was like, they kept trying to throw the towel in Foreman's leg was gone.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: He's like, come on, man, you don't want to lose like this.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: You don't want to lose like this.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: And it feels like that.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: Um, Questioning Britain's referees,
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: Bob Williams,
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: Howard Foster, Mark something, and basically the same dozen compromised referees.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Watching the highlights tells me these guys were hurt.
- 25:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, it's...
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: I think we don't have to go into that one in too much detail.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Daniel Dubois voice.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: Michelle Soro versus George Lidard.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Headlines the annual matchroom card in Monaco.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: We live in the same world where Michelle Soro can upset George Lidard.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: Like what is Lidard's defining world-class trait?
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: His physicality?
- 26:00SPEAKER_00: How about his sense of humor?
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: His mustache?
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, for me,
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: an early film study on this is more about how much does Michelle Soro have left?
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: Feels like Soro's been around for about 15 years at a world-class level.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: I consistently forget what he can do, but I am with you in the sense that...
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: The Kyrian Conway fight,
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: I thought was a very good win for him,
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: but I don't ever look at his performances and go, man,
- 26:30SPEAKER_00: this is a,
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: this is a top guy,
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: for whatever reason,
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: he does not stand out as like, just what you said, what's his defining trait?
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: when I always think about that,
- 26:40SPEAKER_00: like Joe Calzaghe angles,
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: you know, Golovkin power, you know, um, A lot of guys had speed, right?
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: You go, oh man, he's fast.
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: Broner, speed.
- 26:53SPEAKER_00: I don't know what it is with Liddard.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And that basically to me says he's probably got a guy that loses to the guy.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Um...
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: Now some thoughts on Freddy Rojas.
- 27:03SPEAKER_00: Freddy Rojas this weekend lost to Kevin Anton.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: I'm going to have a story actually about Sammy Contreras Jr.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: who's a training partner of Kevin Anton.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: So are we misassessing or assessing Rojas correctly?
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: basically they're questioning that at six foot two and essentially a welterweight,
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: why is this focus on not getting hit?
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Not getting hit means you hit them two times, then you move to avoid getting hit.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: But those dimensions, you'd think you'd be hitting them five to six.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Five times and then deflecting and blocking opponents.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: The movement required would destroy what's left of the stamina after the weight cut.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Well, I think you have to understand, first off, fighter temperaments.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: So with Rojas, you know, he was a great amateur who could win.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: But then, as I always say, there was a guy named Tiger Johnson and Tiger just had his number.
- 28:01SPEAKER_00: And Tiger was just able to beat him every single time.
- 28:06SPEAKER_00: That was one thing that I think that just hurts in your development when you run
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: into the guy that just has your number.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Second off is Freddy Rojas to me.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: Never really converted to a pro style.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: When he looked good in the PBC with certain fights,
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: felt like it was kind of the right opponents.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: You know, he had a good performance against Salobostos, really solid guy.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: But I never saw him really sitting down on punches, leveraging his shots.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: He was kind of always a guy who wanted to fight at range.
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: And the big thing that I saw in the Sosa fight
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: and I had suspected was he hates being walked down.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: And in this fight, we saw it again.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: So it's like he's a big, tall fighter who wants to keep you at the edge of his shots.
- 28:53SPEAKER_00: And if those shots start to not be telling or you start walking forward, he's not a fan of it.
- 29:00SPEAKER_00: So it means, I hate to say it, he has one style right now currently that he fights at.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: He's an amateur kind of distance fighter.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: Who needs to evolve to being able to fight in the mid-range and have something
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: to do besides holding on the inside to really get to that next level.
- 29:17SPEAKER_00: Two losses.
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: I get that he took this fight on short notice,
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: but it's two losses to a very similar style of opponent.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: A come forward pressure fighter.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: And for Anton, Anton's becoming one of the more interesting guys in the division.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: He reminds me of like a baby Antonio Margarito.
- 29:33SPEAKER_00: Charles Shamina must have outworked and outmoved Samuel Arnold.
- 29:37SPEAKER_00: Arnold must have been headhunting.
- 29:39SPEAKER_00: I spoke to Arnold's dad and Arnold said that he was sick going into the fight.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: I won't share the other half of it, but it makes a little more sense after I heard what I heard.
- 29:50SPEAKER_00: Let's go to this.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: So watching Ricardo Sandoval,
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: still heavy criticism of Ricardo Sandoval,
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: which is kind of funny to me because like,
- 29:59SPEAKER_00: here's a guy who's like,
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: most of his career, he was a club fighter and really got the most out of his career.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: And it's like,
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: there's kind of more privileged and more hateable fighters than
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: a blue collar flyweight.
- 30:10SPEAKER_00: But I guess it speaks to Kind of the cool part about my show is how passionate everyone is.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: They have strong opinions about a 112 pounder.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: But this is fight against Angel Acosta.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: I remember this fight being really close.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: I remember actually feeling like Acosta could be winning.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: I remember this stoppage being really bad.
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: I bet it's going to be really bad.
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: I'm watching it right now from the Golden Boy.
- 30:36SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, it's not even a real stoppage.
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: It's just like that was a bad stoppage.
- 30:43SPEAKER_00: So that was a bad stoppage.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: They're kind of like, what the freak are we doing here?
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Can you preview Masuda versus Tatsumi 2?
- 30:54SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: Love to.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Hope my computer doesn't die in the middle of this preview stuff.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: Didn't charge it enough.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: Assuming with the frosted tips looking like 2002 in high school.
- 31:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, so the way Lukie does film study.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: So two southpaws.
- 31:25SPEAKER_00: Masuda's pretty sweet.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Like he's got a jab,
- 31:27SPEAKER_00: but he keeps his hands low, but he's really trying to leverage that left hand.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: He's got, I was watching Andy Vences spar Ivan Redcatch.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: I was in the gym with him about eight years, nine years ago watching that.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: And it's like Masuda's got a little bit of Andy Vences, more fluid and stuff.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Tatsumi early on, you know, he's moving.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: Doing a really good job circling the middle of the ring.
- 31:47SPEAKER_00: Just not getting his backs against the ropes.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: And as I say that, he pushes him into the ropes.
- 31:52SPEAKER_00: See what else we can get here.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: Go a little bit lower res because my computer's not playing it fast enough as I'd like.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: I really like Tutsumi.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: I really, I call him a tsunami, but it's like, I like his punch selection in the mid range.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: He goes left uppercut, right hook, fearless puncher.
- 32:15SPEAKER_00: He's able to move a good bit.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: He has a good variety of punches and he's,
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: it's like, he's like a strategic brawler almost, a boxer brawler.
- 32:26SPEAKER_00: He's able to keep you in the middle of the ring,
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: but he's fearless on the inside and he's got a good selection of punches
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: and he's very calculated.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: He did a great move where he goes jab,
- 32:36SPEAKER_00: cross, and then he pulls back a couple of inches and the punch just barely misses.
- 32:41SPEAKER_00: Good use of distance.
- 32:42SPEAKER_00: I think that he's going to win this pretty easily because Masuda seems like as
- 32:46SPEAKER_00: the fight gets going later in the fight,
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: he has to use toughness to win the bout, whereas...
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: Tatsumi has the ability to kind of stay with a strategy, so to speak.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: So, okay, here we go.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Friends at Pro Box two months ago.
- 33:08SPEAKER_00: I was like, I don't remember this being a Pro Box fight because I wasn't there.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: I didn't have to cover it.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: This is a great fight for Pro Box to have.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Matsuda is in white.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Dago is in white.
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, Dago Higa.
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: And I remember I met him because Mike Baca was hanging out with him.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: Good old Mike Baca, who no longer in boxing media, but he's one of the best guys to ever do it.
- 33:35SPEAKER_00: And, uh,
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: Kind of speaks to boxing media when a guy like Mike Baca is no longer covering
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: the sport.
- 33:42SPEAKER_00: He brought so much to the table, but whatever.
- 33:46SPEAKER_00: What are we doing here?
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is just, Masuda is basically just a physically strong southpaw.
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: Haga looks like an older fighter at this point.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: He's just getting walked down.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: This is two punchers.
- 34:01SPEAKER_00: This is two punchers punching.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, to me, Masuda, and I've seen enough tape on him.
- 34:10SPEAKER_00: He's just a big, big, strong fighter.
- 34:13SPEAKER_00: He's a big, strong fighter, and his asset is power.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: His asset is fearlessness.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Here's Tasumi against Nonito.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Now he's fighting an orthodox switch hitter.
- 34:27SPEAKER_00: I mean, Tasumi impresses me,
- 34:29SPEAKER_00: and he impressed me when he beat Takuma in a way, too,
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: in the sense that he can circle the ring,
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: guys can't cut the ring off on him, good combinations, sticks to a game plan.
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: He's really a Hall of Fame trajectory fighter,
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: so I would expect a Hall of Fame trajectory fighter to win this type of fight.
- 34:45SPEAKER_00: Go to John Arobio versus Henry Cedeno.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: Henry Cedeno, obviously the brother of Yuri Cedeno.
- 34:53SPEAKER_00: It could be a really bad year for the Cedeno brothers.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: The Bazooka Bros, as we like to say.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: Yep, I already remember him.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: He's not as good as Yuri, but he's a big puncher.
- 35:04SPEAKER_00: He kind of throws everything at one speed.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: Very, very tough.
- 35:09SPEAKER_00: With Arobio, Arobio is someone that I've been watching for really about five years now.
- 35:16SPEAKER_00: And the first time I saw him, he really stood out to me as a potential star.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: There's fluidity, there's power, and there's an ability to win at a high level.
- 35:25SPEAKER_00: He obviously beat Antonio Moran.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: I think that he's going to punch in between the punches with Cedeno,
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: and this is going to be a marquee win.
- 35:36SPEAKER_00: The problem with Arobio is he's really a contender,
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: but in modern boxing,
- 35:42SPEAKER_00: contenders are now prospects because Tony Hirsch and Omari Jones are probably
- 35:46SPEAKER_00: the two most interesting guys to win prospect of the year this year,
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: and more than likely, neither of them will win.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Get it because a guy like Arobio who's like probably a shot or two away from
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: a title will be labeled as a prospect.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: We've kind of lost the point on what a prospect is kind of freestyling
- 36:04SPEAKER_00: because I'm down to 13% battery life.
- 36:07SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we got Big Nasty taking on Paul Gallen.
- 36:09SPEAKER_00: I know Nasty, so I'm doing that.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Let me watch a little Gallen.
- 36:16SPEAKER_00: It's just big rugby players fighting each other.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is just going to be, all jokes aside, this is just going to be two big guys.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: Big Nasty's got a right hand.
- 36:33SPEAKER_00: He's not all that talented, but he's got a big right hand.
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: He's younger.
- 36:37SPEAKER_00: Paul Gallen seems to know more, but he's older.
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: So it's like,
- 36:41SPEAKER_00: does the older,
- 36:42SPEAKER_00: more experienced guy go and take him for a walk for whatever, six, eight rounds?
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Or does Big Nasty land a big shot and keep the fun going?
- 36:50SPEAKER_00: I think that's the intrigue and I think honestly that's why
- 36:53SPEAKER_00: that fight's more interesting to me than a lot of fights
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: that are like I'm more interested in that fight than Shock Foster and Navarrete
- 36:59SPEAKER_00: because I feel like the outcome is more uncertain as weird as it sounds.
- 37:03SPEAKER_00: Breakdown Sam Hickey versus Troy Coleman.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: Okay, here's Sam Hickey.
- 37:07SPEAKER_00: Sam Hickey, Zufa Boxing.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Pretty sure I saw this.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: Zufa Boxing.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: Pretty much a British company in the fall.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: It's like...
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 37:34SPEAKER_00: Sam Hickey is very upright.
- 37:37SPEAKER_00: And he kind of does the Sean Porter.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: It was like the football player.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: His feints are just kind of running in place like you're running as a wide receiver.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Come forward fighter, stands really tall.
- 37:49SPEAKER_00: Got a good left hook.
- 37:51SPEAKER_00: He kind of reminds me of a less talented Saul Neno Rodriguez.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: He misses the right hand on purpose to throw a left hook.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: So he misses out right and he's going to throw that left.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: Looks like when he throws the left hook, he wants to go to the body.
- 38:04SPEAKER_00: He doesn't come up one up top with it.
- 38:07SPEAKER_00: His jab isn't the greatest.
- 38:08SPEAKER_00: He doesn't really throw it with conviction.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: He just throws it to get in the guy's face.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: Let's watch.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: I bet there's a stoppage here.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: Pretty dominant in this fight.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: Pulls straight back.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's really,
- 38:21SPEAKER_00: he's kind of,
- 38:23SPEAKER_00: he's a lot like Saul Nano Rodriguez in that sense where he's right hand, left hook.
- 38:28SPEAKER_00: Let's see, Troy Coleman.
- 38:29SPEAKER_00: Coleman fought Isaac Hardiman.
- 38:34SPEAKER_00: Fox Sports Australia.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 38:43SPEAKER_00: I mean, so far, all I'm seeing is Coleman get beat up.
- 38:50SPEAKER_00: Let's see.
- 38:51SPEAKER_00: Is there any...
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, this is... Coleman is just vulnerable to everything that Hickey does.
- 38:59SPEAKER_00: So it's like Hickey has a good right hand and a good left hook.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: Coleman struggles to move his head.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: Coleman struggles with basic things.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: So, I mean, it's just a beneficial matchup for Hickey.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Jack Rafferty versus Hovens-Martyresian.
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: Hovinds that I really liked coming out of the amateurs, but I don't think it's that one.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Here's him against Pierce O'Leary.
- 39:24SPEAKER_00: The study will be shorter.
- 39:36SPEAKER_00: I mean, very upright.
- 39:38SPEAKER_00: You can just tell he's physically strong.
- 39:40SPEAKER_00: Covins, like there's not, it's just, he's a big, strong guy.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: He's a big, strong guy.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: It looks like he's catch.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: I don't like this catch shoot style.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: And it seems like he's, he's a little bit slower.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: So he's going to try to sit on the ropes and catch and shoot you.
- 39:56SPEAKER_00: Not, not the best style at a world-class level.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Jack Rafferty, I remember impressed me with his Echo Suman win, but we'll see Rafferty.
- 40:10SPEAKER_00: Rafferty's pretty limited too.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: Rafferty's the upright British domestic level fighter
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: where he's gonna be like exchanging with you.
- 40:19SPEAKER_00: So he's gonna stand really tall.
- 40:22SPEAKER_00: He's gonna throw a lot of power shots and he's gonna get caught.
- 40:24SPEAKER_00: So I mean, it's a weird fight, right?
- 40:27SPEAKER_00: Because there's a world where if Rafferty doesn't fight to the best
- 40:30SPEAKER_00: of his abilities, he's gonna get in trouble, right?
- 40:33SPEAKER_00: He's gonna get in trouble because you can get timed because it's one of those
- 40:36SPEAKER_00: where He doesn't always set the stage perfectly.
- 40:39SPEAKER_00: So Rafferty has to fight a disciplined fight to get by this.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: He's gotten the bigger wins, but this is a fight about discipline.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: Can you preview Joshua Boatze versus Willie Hutchinson?
- 40:48SPEAKER_00: Why are you for Boatze?
- 40:50SPEAKER_00: I thought you prioritize momentum.
- 40:53SPEAKER_00: I typically am for prioritizing momentum, right?
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: And I like Willie Hutchinson as a fighter.
- 41:00SPEAKER_00: Just think if you look at the two fighters, Bwatsi has more ability.
- 41:05SPEAKER_00: He just hasn't lived up to his potential.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: And maybe I'm also a hypocrite because I don't buy into the storylines as well
- 41:12SPEAKER_00: in British boxing because I'm not as attuned.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: For me, Bwatsi had one major loss and it was to Smith.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: And even in that loss, he showed me good things.
- 41:25SPEAKER_00: I think that Watsi once told me his favorite fighter is Joe Frazier.
- 41:31SPEAKER_00: And the only thing that can hold him back to me is when he tries to channel that.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: The Zack Parker fight, I think that he kind of got into that Joe Frazier thing again.
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: But that version of Zack Parker was really hard to game plan for
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: because Zack
- 41:47SPEAKER_00: Parker had been viewed as the British Edgar Berlanga for some time,
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: kind of overrated, etc., And then comes out and tries to outbox him.
- 41:56SPEAKER_00: So he goes and Boatsy has traditionally been seen as a boxer.
- 41:59SPEAKER_00: And then in that fight, he's going there.
- 42:02SPEAKER_00: With Willie Hutchinson, I think the tricky thing about him is he can fight in both stances.
- 42:06SPEAKER_00: He's really good at jabbing, really, really physically strong, high motor, high intensity guy.
- 42:13SPEAKER_00: I get that there's no momentum with Boatze,
- 42:15SPEAKER_00: but I think that you guys have also kind of told me,
- 42:18SPEAKER_00: sometimes just take the better fighter.
- 42:20SPEAKER_00: And I think Boatze is just better than Willie Hutchinson.
- 42:23SPEAKER_00: And though this screams of, hey, this is like Willie Hutchinson's fight to lose.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: I think Boatze's got a chip on his shoulder.
- 42:31SPEAKER_00: Boatze's got a good team.
- 42:33SPEAKER_00: And I think Boatze is going to win a fight like this.
- 42:36SPEAKER_00: Whereas Willie Hutchinson, I mean, has he won a fight like this?
- 42:41SPEAKER_00: Let's look at his resume.
- 42:43SPEAKER_00: Eh, I don't feel like it.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: And I'm low on battery.
- 42:46SPEAKER_00: A male Navarrete versus Oshaki Foster.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: I don't even need to watch the tape on this.
- 42:49SPEAKER_00: I can tell you exactly my thoughts.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: On these next two, I can give you the exact thoughts on it without watching tape.
- 42:54SPEAKER_00: I've already done the tape study.
- 42:56SPEAKER_00: Manuel Navarrete is really tricky
- 42:58SPEAKER_00: because he doesn't necessarily know what he's going to do until fight night,
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: in my opinion.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: He's awkward.
- 43:02SPEAKER_00: He's unpredictable.
- 43:03SPEAKER_00: He's physically strong.
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: His punches have to hurt because his style is so untraditional that he has to imply
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: a level of damage from his punching.
- 43:12SPEAKER_00: He's going to punch from the ground up.
- 43:14SPEAKER_00: They're going to be curved uppercuts that he's going to look to land.
- 43:17SPEAKER_00: And those are the shots that for traditional boxers like in the Ruben Villa fight,
- 43:21SPEAKER_00: those punches from the ground can really change fights because your eye is obscured
- 43:29SPEAKER_00: to looking for those curved punches in these odd angles and they can just pop up and
- 43:33SPEAKER_00: the ones that you don't see are the ones that hurt you.
- 43:36SPEAKER_00: Whereas Foster to me, I think is one of the more underrated fighters.
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: I think he's got good power.
- 43:40SPEAKER_00: I think that the big issue with Foster that could bite him in this fight,
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: if it goes a certain way, is at times people have said he has a low output.
- 43:49SPEAKER_00: I just feel like the difference between the two, it's not just momentum.
- 43:52SPEAKER_00: It's that Foster has been a serious athlete for at least eight years.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: Whereas Navarrete has taken time off.
- 43:59SPEAKER_00: He's had ups and downs and...
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Highs and lows.
- 44:04SPEAKER_00: And I feel like in big fights like this,
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: a career,
- 44:07SPEAKER_00: and he's also been,
- 44:09SPEAKER_00: while Shock was rebuilding his career,
- 44:12SPEAKER_00: Navarrete was a world champion and he's been in world champion fights and he's
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: a high impact fighter.
- 44:17SPEAKER_00: He's a fighter who's,
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: not the youngest guy,
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: and he's had declining performances,
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: in my opinion,
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: against Brancic,
- 44:24SPEAKER_00: against Charlie Suarez,
- 44:25SPEAKER_00: Liam Wilson,
- 44:26SPEAKER_00: and Robson can say so,
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: but they get overlooked when he fights Mexican pressure fighters.
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: Key to this fight is how does Navarrete respond to shock Foster's body attack?
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: And how does Foster handle the punches coming back at him?
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: If Foster's unfazed by the punches and able to use movement and angles,
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: I think he's going to make this look easy.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: And I think it is going to be easy.
- 44:49SPEAKER_00: Albert Puello versus Dalton Smith.
- 44:52SPEAKER_00: I did that thing where I read it backwards.
- 44:54SPEAKER_00: So for me, like Steve Wellings, I consistently don't see it with Smith.
- 45:00SPEAKER_00: And then he continues to prove me wrong over and over again.
- 45:04SPEAKER_00: So...
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: It's hard to doubt him.
- 45:07SPEAKER_00: It's just a shame this didn't happen earlier in the year because he'd really be in
- 45:11SPEAKER_00: the fighter of the year conversation if he didn't suffer an injury.
- 45:14SPEAKER_00: A really good puncher.
- 45:16SPEAKER_00: He's got the ability to punch with both hands.
- 45:20SPEAKER_00: The one thing about him is it feels like at times he can be robotic.
- 45:23SPEAKER_00: It feels like at times he can fight on the inside out of pride.
- 45:29SPEAKER_00: The thing Puello is going to do is he's going to gamify a fight.
- 45:32SPEAKER_00: So he's going to just turn it into tag.
- 45:34SPEAKER_00: And Smith has to be fine that he's going to be at home.
- 45:39SPEAKER_00: And though his fans want to see a fight, he's not going to get a fight.
- 45:42SPEAKER_00: He's not going to be able to exchange with Puello unless he hurts Puello
- 45:47SPEAKER_00: and Puello starts having to respond to get him off.
- 45:50SPEAKER_00: I think this is going to be a really,
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: really hard fight for Dalton Smith because I think Puello is going in there with
- 45:54SPEAKER_00: the nature of just kind of doing his shtick.
- 45:56SPEAKER_00: Turning him, angling him, and making it a weird, weird fight.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: That being said,
- 46:02SPEAKER_00: if Smith knocks out Puello,
- 46:05SPEAKER_00: I think he's a pound-for-pound level talent, or at least a fringe one.
- 46:08SPEAKER_00: Real quick, rapid fire, Frank Martin versus Tariq Zananyan.
- 46:12SPEAKER_00: Hard fight.
- 46:13SPEAKER_00: Tariq Zananyan is someone who comes with the intention of just moving around and scoring points.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: Frank Martin is with Buddy McGirt.
- 46:20SPEAKER_00: He had a knockout over a 40-year-old Rancis Bartholomew and then just
- 46:23SPEAKER_00: a really bad performance against Nahir Wu Albright.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: He's looked like his legs and his elusiveness are not the same as they were under Derek James.
- 46:33SPEAKER_00: This is going to be a fight to see if his feet can catch up to Zananyan.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: I think Frank will win.
- 46:39SPEAKER_00: But this could be a fight where people go, what's going on with Frank Martin?
- 46:42SPEAKER_00: It's also Frank Martin's debut with top rank.
- 46:45SPEAKER_00: Albert Chop Chop Gonzalez versus Kid Vasquez.
- 46:49SPEAKER_00: I think people don't understand how good Chop Chop Gonzalez is.
- 46:52SPEAKER_00: Kid Vasquez has only been stopped by Rafael Espinoza.
- 46:56SPEAKER_00: He has two close fights with Joe Cordina and Raymond Ford.
- 46:59SPEAKER_00: People argue he could have won at least one of those.
- 47:02SPEAKER_00: Chop Chop Gonzalez has elements of Bam Rodriguez and Virgil Ortiz to me.
- 47:07SPEAKER_00: I'm expecting him to stop Edward Vasquez, who's not going to have the power to keep him off.
- 47:12SPEAKER_00: He's not going to also be able to kind of overwhelm him and smother him.
- 47:16SPEAKER_00: When he fights Chop Chop on the inside, I think Chop Chop's going to break him down.
- 47:19SPEAKER_00: And I think this is going to be Really kind of put Chop Chop on the map
- 47:24SPEAKER_00: for those hardcore enthusiasts to watch him.
- 47:26SPEAKER_00: And Chop Chop showed me a lot in his win over Aaron Almeida.
- 47:29SPEAKER_00: And I feel like Dana Coolwell,
- 47:31SPEAKER_00: kind of a sneaky, really,
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: really good fighter,
- 47:36SPEAKER_00: is like a world championship level fighter that's just not going
- 47:38SPEAKER_00: to get those opportunities.
- 47:41SPEAKER_00: And then I'm going to skip on... We'll do that last.
- 47:45SPEAKER_00: And if my battery dies, then it dies.
- 47:47SPEAKER_00: Steven Navarro versus Emmanuel Moreno.
- 47:50SPEAKER_00: The two fought in Louisiana in an amateur contest.
- 47:55SPEAKER_00: And...
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: Obviously, there's a lot of tension here.
- 47:59SPEAKER_00: Moreno's probably taking the fight because Navarro took a loss last year.
- 48:04SPEAKER_00: It should have been a no contest, but there's probably the sentiment, hey, we could win this.
- 48:08SPEAKER_00: Navarro's as talented of a fighter as I've seen in the amateurs in some times.
- 48:12SPEAKER_00: He's hit the pros.
- 48:13SPEAKER_00: He does have swelling in his face.
- 48:15SPEAKER_00: In this fight, like obviously the first round, it took place in 114.
- 48:20SPEAKER_00: Navarro's in complete control.
- 48:21SPEAKER_00: He's switching stances.
- 48:23SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's a complete fighter, Navarro.
- 48:25SPEAKER_00: The problem with him so far in the pros has been, he's been matched very, very tough.
- 48:30SPEAKER_00: And at times he can take damage, swelling.
- 48:32SPEAKER_00: And then there was a freak occurrence where he...
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: Where a fight was stopped kind of unjustly and ruled a loss for him.
- 48:40SPEAKER_00: It just feels like Moreno in this fight is looking to box someone that's able
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: to box better than him and able to walk him down and able to fight in both stances.
- 48:48SPEAKER_00: I give Navarro a big advantage.
- 48:52SPEAKER_00: He's going to have a local following,
- 48:57SPEAKER_00: and he's going to be motivated,
- 48:59SPEAKER_00: and it's probably going to produce the most exciting crowd response of any fight.
- 49:03SPEAKER_00: And I'm going to argue that it's probably the best fight on the card.
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: Let's do a real quick film study of
- 49:13SPEAKER_00: Tiago Osieri-Maksanga
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: versus Musamu Kakandi.
- 49:21SPEAKER_00: Probably said that super right.
- 49:36SPEAKER_00: Lukusanga, big puncher.
- 49:39SPEAKER_00: You know, he's loading up on everything.
- 49:41SPEAKER_00: He has some form of a jab,
- 49:43SPEAKER_00: but his big thing that he wants to do is he wants to cut the distance,
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: be a small fighter, and he shoots a straight right hand.
- 49:50SPEAKER_00: And that's really what he's looking for.
- 49:52SPEAKER_00: Let's look later in the fight to see how he does it.
- 49:55SPEAKER_00: It's like there's not a lot of nuance to it.
- 49:57SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of come forward.
- 50:00SPEAKER_00: Right in front of you, you miss, I'm punching hard.
- 50:03SPEAKER_00: It's a lot of one speed, it's a lot of power.
- 50:06SPEAKER_00: So probably not a world-class style unless there's the right matchup for him.
- 50:12SPEAKER_00: Let's check out Mezmerki Kaneda.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: Top tier boxing, I like that.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: Okay, Kakandi.
- 50:26SPEAKER_00: I mean...
- 50:29SPEAKER_00: He's kind of the opposite.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: But the thing like in theory,
- 50:32SPEAKER_00: he should be able to beat a fighter like this, but he has some horrible faults.
- 50:37SPEAKER_00: He falls in with his punches.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: So when he when he goes to throw his jab,
- 50:42SPEAKER_00: he reaches, which means he leans his nose over his toes and he has good reflexes.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: He's got a good ability to fight at range, but he just like falls in.
- 50:51SPEAKER_00: And when he falls in, he gets hit.
- 50:52SPEAKER_00: He throws maybe too many combos.
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: So he throws maybe four or five punches.
- 50:56SPEAKER_00: Good fighters are going to catch you.
- 50:58SPEAKER_00: One or two shots.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: So while Kakandi has more attributes I'm drawn to, his faults play strongly into his opponent.
- 51:06SPEAKER_00: His opponent can time him.
- 51:07SPEAKER_00: His opponent can punch with him because he simply stands in front of his opponent too long.
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: He's too greedy with his combinations, probably from the opposition he's faced.
- 51:16SPEAKER_00: But I would say that this is a very,
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: very interesting fight because they're like,
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: it's kind of a fight of the year on paper, the way the matchup plays out because...
- 51:26SPEAKER_00: Of the styles.
- 51:27SPEAKER_00: Because one guy is going to be there too much and the other guy is waiting
- 51:34SPEAKER_00: to get off one good punch.
- 51:37SPEAKER_00: That's the show for this week.
- 51:39SPEAKER_00: So thank you for tuning in to the Once a Week Podcast and I will be back next week.
