- 0:00Speaker 1: Yo, what's up man, It's joining Lucas. Make sure y'all
- 0:02Speaker 1: check me out on a bootleg CAV podcast shared.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yo, Bootleg CAV show Man special guests in here. His
- 0:11Speaker 2: new album is out and I'm gonna say it officially.
- 0:14Speaker 2: In my opinion, a lot of other albums have been
- 0:17Speaker 2: getting talked about, but for my money, this man has
- 0:20Speaker 2: the album of the year so far. Joining Lucas Nigga. Welcome, sir,
- 0:23Speaker 2: so Gy. I got to start the interview off because
- 0:26Speaker 2: I watched your Breakfast Club interview and there's tons of pauses,
- 0:28Speaker 2: so we got to kick it off with a nice
- 0:29Speaker 2: pause moment. If we go to Worcester, are we gonna
- 0:31Speaker 2: get glizzies at the Coney Island? I heard, if we
- 0:36Speaker 2: go we gotta get some glizzies? Is this a fact?
- 0:38Speaker 1: It's a big bulls Yeah, Coney Island go crazy? All right,
- 0:42Speaker 1: Coney Island go crazy. Shout out to Cody Island for
- 0:44Speaker 1: show for sure. Man.
- 0:45Speaker 2: But Yo, welcome dude. Like I said, the body of
- 0:47Speaker 2: work is crazy. I know obviously you've been dropping like
- 0:50Speaker 2: videos and singles it feels like for about a year
- 0:53Speaker 2: now that are connected to this body of work. When
- 0:56Speaker 2: was the first, was it nine months ago.
- 0:57Speaker 1: You dropp Yeah? Yeah, yeah, about nine months ago.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And I gotta say, man, like there's two moments from
- 1:04Speaker 2: this project that got me like, hella emotional. So Simba
- 1:07Speaker 2: and me are really close friends, and he played me
- 1:09Speaker 2: the DMX record like maybe three months ago, and that
- 1:13Speaker 2: shit had me choked up, man, Like that DMX moment
- 1:16Speaker 2: is like crazy to hear it, like for you, like
- 1:22Speaker 2: when you listen to a song like that and it's
- 1:25Speaker 2: it feels like this is kind of like the last
- 1:27Speaker 2: real X feature we might get. You know what I'm saying,
- 1:29Speaker 2: because I know he's got a lot of like verses
- 1:30Speaker 2: floating around. You got one, I know you have another one.
- 1:34Speaker 2: But I mean like the stuff that like I feel
- 1:37Speaker 2: like we hear is like people buying versus and ship
- 1:39Speaker 2: you had a real relationship with him, Like when you
- 1:43Speaker 2: like listen back to that, like like I did you
- 1:46Speaker 2: have you already had that verse obviously before he passed,
- 1:48Speaker 2: Like did you get emotional like hearing the final product.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Like a little bit. It's it's a little bit different
- 1:58Speaker 1: now that he's gone, you know, yeah, yeah, so they
- 2:00Speaker 1: do it hit different.
- 2:01Speaker 2: For sure, man. And then obviously this jelly world record
- 2:05Speaker 2: is just crazy for anybody. Like I've dealt with a
- 2:07Speaker 2: lot of family members who've been addicts. You know, my
- 2:10Speaker 2: son's mom was a big drug addicts, So that second
- 2:14Speaker 2: verse was crazy.
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's tough.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know you said that you kind of
- 2:17Speaker 2: feel like you get like channeled when you write certain
- 2:21Speaker 2: verses from different perspectives. Did you ever deal with any
- 2:24Speaker 2: actual like people close to you?
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a lot of within all my records, They're
- 2:30Speaker 1: coming from somewhere right. It's like, you know, if I'm
- 2:35Speaker 1: not experiencing it directly, then it's you know, someone that
- 2:38Speaker 1: I know personally that experienced it, you know. And but yeah,
- 2:43Speaker 1: that that that record was a little bit personal for sure,
- 2:47Speaker 1: because I have I have someone If you hear it
- 2:50Speaker 1: sound like a letter, that's like a for sure, like
- 2:51Speaker 1: I'm talking to someone that's try to help them lift
- 2:54Speaker 1: their spirits up, you know what I mean, and get
- 2:56Speaker 1: them out of the slum.
- 2:57Speaker 2: At the end, how long your relationship go back with
- 3:01Speaker 2: Jelly because you know, obviously everyone's just kind of getting
- 3:03Speaker 2: hip to Jelly Roll, but he's been like an underground rapper.
- 3:04Speaker 1: For Yeah, I wasn't really I was hip to Jelly
- 3:06Speaker 1: but back when he was rapping, for sure, but you
- 3:10Speaker 1: know he's he's definitely throughout the years, you know, I
- 3:15Speaker 1: have grown pause and this record just it just made
- 3:24Speaker 1: sense to put him on it because he was you know,
- 3:27Speaker 1: he really advocates for for sure.
- 3:30Speaker 2: That's like his mission.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's his mission for sure. So it just made
- 3:35Speaker 1: the most sense to put him on the record, you know.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And you know when he heard it, you know, he
- 3:40Speaker 1: got goosebumps and he was like, bro, this is this
- 3:42Speaker 1: one's this is gonna be the Grammy right here for sure.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And if like the VMA's would ever get their shit together,
- 3:47Speaker 2: you'd have like fifty by now.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's I was just telling him, telling
- 3:52Speaker 1: him now on the bus, like how I just feel
- 3:54Speaker 1: like I'd be slighted.
- 3:55Speaker 2: It's crazy, Like you got like probably the best music
- 3:57Speaker 2: videos like times twenty over the last.
- 3:59Speaker 1: Decade, m h and like did we did we get
- 4:03Speaker 1: music video or was it music video for I'm Not Racist?
- 4:08Speaker 1: It was it was music video right for Grammy. It
- 4:12Speaker 1: wasn't a song music video?
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I mean yeah, you have classic videos at
- 4:18Speaker 2: this point over and over.
- 4:19Speaker 1: But that was but but that was that felt good.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Of course, get you're a pauser man, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 2: You know last night you were hanging out with Rihanna
- 4:31Speaker 2: and Cardi B and Jason Lee and was Paris Hilting there.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Paris was sitting right next to me. Nice, she's dope.
- 4:38Speaker 2: She hey, man, she she started all this reality.
- 4:40Speaker 1: She is dope, bro, She's a dope person. Like she's
- 4:44Speaker 1: she's got a really dope personality.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Was that your first time like meeting her?
- 4:47Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's like she's she's just a dope person.
- 4:53Speaker 2: She was before her time. Can you imagine a Para
- 4:56Speaker 2: Hilt would have dropped like TikTok wave.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Like yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. She's like the first, like
- 5:00Speaker 1: you know what I mean, the first person to really
- 5:02Speaker 1: do that that live you know what I'm saying. But yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: she's she's fire man.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Like I heard you had like, uh, some previous conversations
- 5:11Speaker 2: with with real. Did she reach out to when I'm
- 5:12Speaker 2: Not racist?
- 5:14Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I built the friendship where like when I'm
- 5:19Speaker 1: not racist that you know, came out. You know, she
- 5:22Speaker 1: was one of the first people to like really hit
- 5:24Speaker 1: me up and like repost it and like, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 1: and we built like a really dope friendship. You know
- 5:30Speaker 1: what I mean, And she's she's such a she she
- 5:35Speaker 1: really loves the culture of of you know, like real
- 5:39Speaker 1: like hip hop and meaningful music, you know what I mean.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So when I dropped sometimes she'll just be like, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: she did it with Devil's Work, like Yo, send me that,
- 5:47Speaker 1: you know, like text me, send me that, and I
- 5:50Speaker 1: send it to her and then she'll just post it
- 5:52Speaker 1: and she'd just be like, Yo, this ship needs to
- 5:54Speaker 1: be seen. Like she she really want to, you know
- 5:56Speaker 1: what I mean, like show love for real and like
- 5:58Speaker 1: I really fuck her for that. And you know, seeing
- 6:02Speaker 1: her yesterday was like singing a homie, you know, like
- 6:05Speaker 1: she's a dope person.
- 6:06Speaker 2: You got to get get a record one day when
- 6:08Speaker 2: she's super active in the music again, because I feel
- 6:09Speaker 2: like she comes and goes, you know what I mean, Like.
- 6:11Speaker 1: One day she's just she's a mother, you know, for sure,
- 6:14Speaker 1: a billionaire and a billionaire, but she's you know, she
- 6:17Speaker 1: got the fenty popping shout out the fenty and she's
- 6:20Speaker 1: a mom, you know, and she's married and you know
- 6:23Speaker 1: she's she's just you know, she living a different life now.
- 6:26Speaker 1: So I don't really know if her head is in
- 6:27Speaker 1: the music like that, you know, and it's like she
- 6:30Speaker 1: gave us years and years worth of music. Amazing classic music,
- 6:34Speaker 1: by the way, so shout out to Ree.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Speaking of classics. I feel like you've had like such
- 6:38Speaker 2: an interesting path to where you are now because like
- 6:41Speaker 2: I first got hit to you with the five o
- 6:43Speaker 2: eight album, which was like twenty seventeen, keeping one hundreds crazy.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And I feel like throughout the years you've like been
- 6:55Speaker 2: about as anti industry as you could be for somebody
- 6:57Speaker 2: who's as big as you are, is that you're gonna
- 7:02Speaker 2: have some hard pauses with me? I mean, and I
- 7:07Speaker 2: know you've been through a lot in the industry too,
- 7:10Speaker 2: but was that is that always kind of been like
- 7:13Speaker 2: on purpose? Because you have a very tight team, You've
- 7:16Speaker 2: you've moved your own way your entire career. You've been
- 7:18Speaker 2: through the major label ship, you've been through the indie shit,
- 7:21Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Like, has that always kind
- 7:23Speaker 2: of been a part of the plan or did it
- 7:25Speaker 2: just work out that way to.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Just be like anti?
- 7:28Speaker 2: You're just you're right, you're writing your own ship. You're
- 7:30Speaker 2: almost like, you know, like I look at guys like you,
- 7:32Speaker 2: I look at guys like Russ like you guys just
- 7:34Speaker 2: write your own rules to this rap ship. There's no
- 7:36Speaker 2: like you know, a lot of people just go by
- 7:38Speaker 2: the blueprint. They drop a single, they work the single,
- 7:40Speaker 2: if it don't work out, they drop another single.
- 7:42Speaker 1: But it's like, bro, that shit is like even if
- 7:44Speaker 1: you look at the song structure on a lot of
- 7:45Speaker 1: my ship, like like you said, it's just breaking all
- 7:48Speaker 1: the rules.
- 7:48Speaker 2: There's not hooks.
- 7:49Speaker 1: There's no hooks on a lot of this ship. There's
- 7:51Speaker 1: no hooks on isis and there's no hooks on like
- 7:54Speaker 1: a lot of speaking Broski, I don't even know if
- 8:00Speaker 1: what record didn't what record, what other big risks sticks
- 8:04Speaker 1: and sticks and stones did it didn't have a hook
- 8:07Speaker 1: to conray Broski, no hook any of the storytelling records
- 8:12Speaker 1: really don't be having hooks except for Best for me
- 8:14Speaker 1: that has a hook. I didn't go, yeah, well X
- 8:18Speaker 1: didn't really have a hook. So it's like I don't
- 8:20Speaker 1: really care about following song structure like how things go.
- 8:23Speaker 1: It's like I just want to do what I want
- 8:25Speaker 1: to do, and it feels good to do what I
- 8:27Speaker 1: want to do and not be told what to do.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You know, and then talk about your app too, because
- 8:31Speaker 2: your app is like for people who don't know, like,
- 8:33Speaker 2: you got an app that's very unique because there's apps
- 8:36Speaker 2: out there where you can like upload your music. Obviously
- 8:38Speaker 2: there's there's distroc kids in the tune course and all that,
- 8:41Speaker 2: but your app also provides like contract templates, like just
- 8:46Speaker 2: different shit. If you're an independent artist, then maybe you
- 8:48Speaker 2: don't have the means or the resources to like know
- 8:52Speaker 2: someone or a music lawyer or stuff like that.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Like if I had Tully, like you know, when I
- 8:56Speaker 1: really needed it when I was coming up, and like
- 8:58Speaker 1: I didn't really you know, know what things was, and
- 9:01Speaker 1: I didn't really know about certain shit like you know,
- 9:05Speaker 1: tell you what. It came in Clutch, especially the opportunities
- 9:08Speaker 1: on there, you know what I mean, with the different
- 9:09Speaker 1: features and shit that we were doing. Like you know,
- 9:13Speaker 1: it really is like a central place for you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: artists to have, you know, to store all their assets
- 9:18Speaker 1: in there, you know, and to you know read, I
- 9:21Speaker 1: mean to write, record, listen to the beat all on
- 9:24Speaker 1: a single screen. You know. I was doing it all
- 9:27Speaker 1: for like three different phones. I was listening to a
- 9:29Speaker 1: beat off of this phone, and I was writing off
- 9:31Speaker 1: of this one and then recording like because I would
- 9:33Speaker 1: record like voice voice notes, so I can remember, like,
- 9:38Speaker 1: but we got we had gotten patented so that we
- 9:41Speaker 1: can be able to do that all on a single screen,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you know what I mean, Which was pretty dope. And
- 9:46Speaker 1: then you I can write a song with you from
- 9:48Speaker 1: a like a remote location, meaning you could be in
- 9:49Speaker 1: a different location right into the same song. Shit like
- 9:52Speaker 1: that the loop function on there, so like if you
- 9:54Speaker 1: sent me a record with like an open sixteen, I
- 9:57Speaker 1: can lose the part that I want and write. It's dope, bro.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And it's like when you think about like, there's no
- 10:03Speaker 1: there's never been like a pre production tool for an
- 10:06Speaker 1: artist to you know have I mean, directors have what
- 10:09Speaker 1: like final cut to have their own ship right right.
- 10:13Speaker 1: And then you got Microsoft for like you know office
- 10:15Speaker 1: and microsoftware to Microsoft is you know the engineers they
- 10:18Speaker 1: have pro tools. You know, producers have fruity loops. You
- 10:21Speaker 1: know that there's something for everyone except for artists, you know.
- 10:24Speaker 1: So I wanted to be the first one to create
- 10:26Speaker 1: something that artists can use as a pre production tool.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Did you like hit up any other rapper homies and say, hey,
- 10:32Speaker 2: I'm working on this, what do you think I should
- 10:34Speaker 2: include or what's missing? This is this is what we
- 10:36Speaker 2: got so far. What's missing?
- 10:38Speaker 1: No, you can be pretty much kept like we pretty
- 10:41Speaker 1: much like just use me as a case study. And
- 10:44Speaker 1: we already knew what was missing, right, you know, we
- 10:46Speaker 1: already seen that a lot of these niggas don't know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: you know, what their splits are on certain records. They
- 10:50Speaker 1: don't know certain shit. So we're like, yeah, we got
- 10:52Speaker 1: to add that, you know for sure, you know, contracts
- 10:56Speaker 1: and shit like that. We got to add that copyright
- 10:58Speaker 1: and this shit. We got to add that.
- 10:59Speaker 2: There's like this all shit like if you're an independent
- 11:01Speaker 2: artist and like you buy a beat from somebody, like
- 11:04Speaker 2: if I'm just like, you know, a new rapper, I
- 11:07Speaker 2: don't know what a production agreement looks like or how
- 11:10Speaker 2: to make sure like this producer can't come back later,
- 11:12Speaker 2: and like no, I sold this twice, huh.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And you know, getting that shit off the ground was
- 11:18Speaker 1: completely self funded until Sony stepped in, and you know
- 11:22Speaker 1: they gave us a big bag. And then you know
- 11:25Speaker 1: now that our partners in there, and.
- 11:26Speaker 2: That's big, you know, Paul, Yeah, for sure, See there
- 11:29Speaker 2: we go, there we go, Yo, talk to me about
- 11:36Speaker 2: you know you have been I mean, look you've had,
- 11:40Speaker 2: like I said, a storied career. I feel like you
- 11:42Speaker 2: have fans that have been fucking with you the whole time.
- 11:45Speaker 2: You have fans who discovered you through like Tech nine,
- 11:47Speaker 2: you have fans who discovered you through like Eminem. You
- 11:49Speaker 2: got you know, fans who the first time they ever
- 11:51Speaker 2: heard of you was Will Like, you know, you have
- 11:53Speaker 2: all these new fans, but you got like your fans
- 11:56Speaker 2: are very very dedicated, Like they're a very dedicated bunch.
- 12:00Speaker 2: We'll say, do you ever feel like, because I've heard
- 12:04Speaker 2: you kind of talk about like when you do a
- 12:06Speaker 2: record like a guy like future, Like, do is it
- 12:08Speaker 2: kind of hard to like get over always having to
- 12:13Speaker 2: try to think about like making your like die hard
- 12:15Speaker 2: fans happy while also trying to figure out how to
- 12:18Speaker 2: like expand.
- 12:18Speaker 1: The reach absolutely, Like that's like one of the things
- 12:21Speaker 1: because I really care about the core, you know, and
- 12:23Speaker 1: it's like I don't want to turn off the core
- 12:25Speaker 1: and like make.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Them like now they change your life.
- 12:28Speaker 1: One hundred percent. So it's like, because I care about
- 12:30Speaker 1: about the core, you know, it's like I worry sometimes
- 12:34Speaker 1: that they're not really going to understand, like, you know,
- 12:37Speaker 1: what I'm trying to do musically, you know. And it's
- 12:39Speaker 1: like as far as like me experimenting with like different things,
- 12:45Speaker 1: it's like I actually am a fan of like Future Records,
- 12:48Speaker 1: you know, I'm a fan of NBA. Like I'm a
- 12:50Speaker 1: fan of a lot of that realm that they may
- 12:53Speaker 1: not be fans of, you know. So when I step
- 12:55Speaker 1: outside of that and collab with those people, you know,
- 12:58Speaker 1: sometimes my fans like what the fuck are you doing?
- 13:00Speaker 1: You know? But it's like I'm just really open minded
- 13:04Speaker 1: and like it's really just me being experimental and trying
- 13:08Speaker 1: and ship. But I think that it's like having the
- 13:11Speaker 1: balance of like putting your world into their world and
- 13:15Speaker 1: like doing it like with within reason and not just
- 13:20Speaker 1: going too far left field and like you know, becoming
- 13:24Speaker 1: too excited pause and then going too come on, bro, yeah,
- 13:30Speaker 1: niggas going to going too far into the into the world.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. That really just like.
- 13:37Speaker 2: What's interesting too, because I was I always think back to,
- 13:40Speaker 2: like when I was growing up, how big of a
- 13:42Speaker 2: deal it was that Kanye got Tulip Quality and Freeway
- 13:44Speaker 2: on the song Together. You remember when that happened and
- 13:47Speaker 2: people were like, yo, Kanye's bringing the backpack and the mainstream.
- 13:51Speaker 1: She brought a lot of shit together, bro, But if you.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Think about it, like fast forward, like Freeway and telip
- 13:55Speaker 2: Quality on a song together, is not that crazy. Like
- 13:57Speaker 2: and when jay Z said, you know, uh, I'll be
- 14:01Speaker 2: rhyming a lot more like common sense, you know, lyrically
- 14:04Speaker 2: I beat teleip quality. It's crazy because like back then,
- 14:07Speaker 2: I feel like hip hop was more segregated, but nowadays,
- 14:10Speaker 2: I feel like I feel like it's natural for like
- 14:13Speaker 2: like like the record you did with Young Boy, I
- 14:15Speaker 2: don't think I think he came to your world on.
- 14:17Speaker 1: That, but that was one of the ones that was
- 14:19Speaker 1: like I did the Future one. I even got one way,
- 14:25Speaker 1: I got a join with Koda that Black You know
- 14:26Speaker 1: what I'm saying, Records like Coda Black One goes stupid,
- 14:29Speaker 1: Like I love the Koda Black One, but I just
- 14:31Speaker 1: I didn't put it on this project. You know, I'm
- 14:33Speaker 1: probably gonna throw it on my next joint, you know
- 14:35Speaker 1: what I'm saying. I don't know, but I felt like
- 14:37Speaker 1: there was too many records on this project that was
- 14:39Speaker 1: like a little bit left field, and it was like.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Well, you had scrapped like the previous idea for this album. Yeah,
- 14:47Speaker 2: So there's probably like a folder just the fully shit
- 14:50Speaker 2: that will never.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Set, a whole bunch of features from a whole bunch
- 14:52Speaker 1: of different types of artists that I'm a fan of, right,
- 14:54Speaker 1: But I just felt like it was going too far
- 14:56Speaker 1: down of a direction that I I stopped feeling comfortable
- 15:01Speaker 1: with because it was like, I don't ever want to
- 15:04Speaker 1: just create something that's just for now, you know. It's
- 15:06Speaker 1: just like I like my shit to live forever.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Can you walk me through? The one thing that I
- 15:12Speaker 2: love and hip hop is like when to Top Tier
- 15:16Speaker 2: MC's battle and you and Tory Lanez had a fun
- 15:21Speaker 2: a fun time you guys were and you guys were
- 15:24Speaker 2: hitting each other.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Ball pause Jesus super.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Coast, super as heyo. But when you guys had that
- 15:31Speaker 2: going on, like you guys were turning around records hella
- 15:34Speaker 2: quick about each other and it was very like it
- 15:37Speaker 2: felt like obviously guys were talking shit each other, but
- 15:39Speaker 2: it just felt like this is for the sport type shit.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, of course, Like you know, he's a funny guy.
- 15:45Speaker 1: You know, I was just talking about this on a
- 15:48Speaker 1: million dollars worth of game, like he's a funny dude,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and like, you know, because he's a funny guy and like,
- 15:54Speaker 1: you know, it was it was more sporty than anything.
- 15:58Speaker 1: You know, me and him and really know each other.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I have a real problem, you know. But he he's
- 16:03Speaker 1: a competitive guy, you know, and he said some ship
- 16:08Speaker 1: and it was just like, you know, that was it
- 16:10Speaker 1: was like I got to show this name because he
- 16:12Speaker 1: doesn't know, you know, so.
- 16:13Speaker 2: You got sharped to the other swords for like a month.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Paul super pause.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Hey bro, I can't say ship to this guy without
- 16:19Speaker 2: a positive.
- 16:19Speaker 1: That was crazy sharpening each other's But now I was
- 16:25Speaker 1: gonna ask you, that's crazy. Yeah, that was that was lyricol. Yeah, obviously, Jesus,
- 16:33Speaker 1: that was crazy.
- 16:35Speaker 2: How excited because because I'm not sure just from a
- 16:38Speaker 2: hip hop fans perspective, because you're obviously a hip hop head.
- 16:43Speaker 2: What was I mean? Look, the night that you released
- 16:45Speaker 2: your album Kendrick Lamar dis is the other two Big
- 16:48Speaker 2: Three you dropped. You dropped an album, Big Sean dropped
- 16:52Speaker 2: a single, and then there's this Kendrick verse that just
- 16:55Speaker 2: takes over the world. What were your initial thoughts when
- 16:58Speaker 2: you heard the verse? Is the It's an amazing verse,
- 17:01Speaker 2: and I'm I'm not as excited because I don't think
- 17:03Speaker 2: Drake's canna reply. I'm really excited to see what Jake
- 17:04Speaker 2: Cole says. But what were your thoughts? Just from a
- 17:06Speaker 2: fan's perspective.
- 17:07Speaker 1: This motherfucker like why today? Mother waited till today? This
- 17:14Speaker 1: motherfucker waited till today to do this ship? Right? But
- 17:18Speaker 1: now I'm actually a fan, like I fuck with Kenjack.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I'm a fan of Kenjack.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Has he ever tapped in? Pause?
- 17:28Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 17:31Speaker 2: Are we pausing that? But you and I couldn't hang
- 17:35Speaker 2: out too because you would be I'm fucked up over.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Here as he tapped in. It's crazy, but nah, he
- 17:41Speaker 1: I haven't talked to him, but he's He's somebody that
- 17:47Speaker 1: I think is fire, you know, And it's like, I
- 17:50Speaker 1: know he's aware of me. You know, we have we
- 17:51Speaker 1: of course we have a We've worked with a lot
- 17:54Speaker 1: of the same people, producers and ship like that. So
- 17:57Speaker 1: but yeah, he's fire. Yeah, A fuck with Kendrick When
- 18:01Speaker 1: he dropped it, though, I'm definitely like, damn, nigga, why
- 18:03Speaker 1: today you do this ship? You know, I didn't really
- 18:05Speaker 1: give a fuck about what Big Seawan dropped too much
- 18:07Speaker 1: like that. That didn't really bother me.
- 18:10Speaker 2: There's a fly just floating in front of you. Yeah,
- 18:15Speaker 2: I think, uh, it's It's just it was just an
- 18:17Speaker 2: interesting time to drop. I was like, damn, because you know,
- 18:19Speaker 2: Big Shawn's always talk about he's like the fourth guy
- 18:22Speaker 2: in the Big three, and Bro big Sean said that
- 18:25Speaker 2: he's I feel like that's always kind of been like
- 18:27Speaker 2: an interesting perspective, like you know in the in the
- 18:30Speaker 2: blog era rap scene.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Well, you know what it is a Big Sewan like
- 18:33Speaker 1: at that time, like he's has the time, like he's
- 18:37Speaker 1: around her. He's made like a lot of big records
- 18:39Speaker 1: to Big Shawn's fire, but he's I was saying this
- 18:42Speaker 1: on the Breakfast Club. It's like these guys have been
- 18:45Speaker 1: in the game for like like Kendrick, Big Sean, Drake,
- 18:48Speaker 1: they all came like up Paul at the same time,
- 18:52Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, So like.
- 18:53Speaker 2: They were all peers. You're kind of like right after I'm.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Right after them. So that's this is why he feels
- 18:57Speaker 1: like he should be included in that conversation, you know,
- 19:00Speaker 1: like he could, but he took a lot of time
- 19:02Speaker 1: off too. You know, he just stopped you know what
- 19:04Speaker 1: I mean, like completely.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Has there been a concept for a record that because
- 19:11Speaker 2: you have some crazy like joints. Bro Like, I feel like,
- 19:16Speaker 2: you know, I mean, I heard you talk about it.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Sometimes you'll come up with a visual before you even
- 19:20Speaker 2: figure out the song, and and and and it's it's
- 19:23Speaker 2: like a real piece of art. It's like a standalone
- 19:26Speaker 2: piece of art between the music video and the and
- 19:28Speaker 2: the record. But has there been a concept that you
- 19:30Speaker 2: came up with that you had to scrap because you
- 19:31Speaker 2: thought it was a little too controversial?
- 19:33Speaker 1: Yeah, well not controversial, but just like I've had I've
- 19:37Speaker 1: had records that I've had a scrap all the time
- 19:39Speaker 1: just because I felt like they just weren't like.
- 19:41Speaker 2: The people weren't ready.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Yeah, people weren't ready or not, they weren't ready, but
- 19:45Speaker 1: the record just didn't come out the way that I
- 19:47Speaker 1: thought it was gonna come out, right, you know.
- 19:48Speaker 2: That's fair. There's some point to be self aware. On
- 19:51Speaker 2: sticks and stones, you say that you think about quit
- 19:52Speaker 2: and rap a lot. I feel like, is this got
- 19:57Speaker 2: to be a hard thing to want to leave if
- 19:59Speaker 2: you love it?
- 20:00Speaker 1: Yeah? I mean, hmm, you know, me saying that was
- 20:05Speaker 1: really just I've been making music for a long time
- 20:09Speaker 1: before we knew who you Before you knew who I was,
- 20:11Speaker 1: you know. So it's like for y'all, it's like I
- 20:14Speaker 1: just got here a couple of years ago. But it's
- 20:16Speaker 1: like for me, I've been doing I've been making me
- 20:18Speaker 1: so I was like seven eight, right, you know, so
- 20:23Speaker 1: spending spent a long time since I've been you know.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean years. So for you, is there like
- 20:30Speaker 2: a because at the end of the day, like with
- 20:33Speaker 2: this rap shit, I feel like everyone kind of has
- 20:35Speaker 2: like hits a wall like when it comes to like
- 20:38Speaker 2: but I'm sure, especially for you, like it's got to
- 20:40Speaker 2: be like mentally exhausting because you're so like your ship
- 20:44Speaker 2: ain't just like yo, let's go grab a camera and
- 20:46Speaker 2: hit the liquor store. The Sticks and Stones video was
- 20:48Speaker 2: the most normal video rap video I've ever seen your
- 20:50Speaker 2: ship walking through the top Square.
- 20:52Speaker 1: But I think sometimes because it's a conway, it's necessary.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It's like sometimes it's like going above and beyond in
- 20:59Speaker 1: OD trying to do too much and trying to like,
- 21:02Speaker 1: you know, every video has to be a massive piece.
- 21:04Speaker 1: It's like crazy. It's like sometimes I just like I
- 21:07Speaker 1: want to chill. Sometimes I want to just walk around
- 21:09Speaker 1: and do some simple ship sometimes, you know, It's like
- 21:11Speaker 1: I don't and I don't ever want people to like
- 21:14Speaker 1: get too comfortable with me always making this like huge
- 21:19Speaker 1: music video splash. You know. It's like sometimes I just
- 21:22Speaker 1: want to just do ship like that's not that you
- 21:24Speaker 1: know for sure.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, talk to me about obviously you've been in a
- 21:29Speaker 2: couple of movies now Bad Boys for the trailer dropped.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Did this Is this a direct result of manifestation for you?
- 21:37Speaker 2: Because the video, Oh yeah, I got down there azing
- 21:43Speaker 2: book by the way, Yeah, for sure, great book. I
- 21:46Speaker 2: was gonna say, like, explain to me just how all
- 21:47Speaker 2: of that obviously he sees the video.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Yeah, manifestation for sure, That's that's really what that was.
- 21:52Speaker 1: You know, just me like wanting to create a record
- 21:57Speaker 1: for somebody who's like that I look up to, you
- 21:59Speaker 1: know what I mean. You know, I feel like, just get
- 22:00Speaker 1: the respect that he deserved, Like even as on the
- 22:04Speaker 1: music tip, you know what.
- 22:05Speaker 2: I'm sure on the music tip, first rapper Grammy.
- 22:08Speaker 1: First rapper to ever win a Grammy, Like so I
- 22:10Speaker 1: just felt like he didn't get the respect. He don't
- 22:12Speaker 1: get the respect that he deserves. So it's like, you know,
- 22:15Speaker 1: I wanted to make a record where I'm like really
- 22:18Speaker 1: just giving him his flowers, you know what I mean?
- 22:20Speaker 1: And and me and me and my manager had a
- 22:26Speaker 1: bet like when we put it up, how long it
- 22:27Speaker 1: was gonna take for him to see it and respond.
- 22:30Speaker 1: I said it was gonna take a couple of days.
- 22:32Speaker 1: He was like, nah, you're gonna hit it. He's gonna
- 22:34Speaker 1: respond and within hours, right, And I'm like, nah, this
- 22:37Speaker 1: is my hero. Like so I'm like this nigga ain't
- 22:39Speaker 1: about to respond. It took like one hour, two hours. Crazy,
- 22:43Speaker 1: I'm saying that nigga chopped on the net like yo
- 22:45Speaker 1: Joiner like Yo, this shit crazy. I'm like, oh shit,
- 22:49Speaker 1: you go.
- 22:49Speaker 2: From playing him in the video to be part four
- 22:54Speaker 2: of the movie.
- 22:55Speaker 1: To not just being in the movie, but also like
- 22:58Speaker 1: really having you know him as a real life mentor,
- 23:01Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, where he's like an older
- 23:03Speaker 1: brother for sure. Like I talked to him a lot,
- 23:04Speaker 1: you know, we make be in the studio together, like
- 23:07Speaker 1: we like he's somebody. I go to his house like
- 23:09Speaker 1: he's he's not, He's just he's a nigga bro.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Well, he's like also like for as famous as he is,
- 23:15Speaker 2: like strangely transparent and vulnerable as a man, you know
- 23:19Speaker 2: what I'm saying, which I think is important, all right, sir?
- 23:21Speaker 2: What is Has there been any piece of advice that
- 23:23Speaker 2: you've been able to kind of apply to your personal
- 23:25Speaker 2: life or to your career that he's given you because
- 23:27Speaker 2: he's seen it all man like.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, one of the biggest advice he gives me,
- 23:31Speaker 1: like I say, is when he say not to be
- 23:33Speaker 1: afraid of failing, Like, don't be afraid to fail, you
- 23:36Speaker 1: know what I mean, And that's that everybody's afraid of failing,
- 23:41Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Like, but it's like, you know,
- 23:43Speaker 1: a lot of the geniuses and the brave, the people
- 23:46Speaker 1: of the Kanye's and a lot of their motherfuckers, like
- 23:49Speaker 1: they weren't afraid to fail, you know what I mean,
- 23:51Speaker 1: And that's why they're as big as they are. A pause,
- 23:53Speaker 1: you know. So I think that's a great, great advice, like,
- 23:58Speaker 1: you know. So that's one of the things that he's
- 24:00Speaker 1: taught me. But he dropped so much gems on a
- 24:03Speaker 1: daily basis that it's like it's just so much.
- 24:06Speaker 2: You know, it's crazy that you're you're from Massachusetts, obviously,
- 24:12Speaker 2: I don't know how heavy the Boston's like dialect is
- 24:15Speaker 2: in Worcester, but you don't have the ca Sta Tom
- 24:18Speaker 2: fucking Brady fucking shit going on in your area. Is
- 24:22Speaker 2: it like, does the White Trash sound like Ted?
- 24:26Speaker 1: Well? Yeah, my assistant, he sounds just like fucking Ted. Yeah, Marty,
- 24:31Speaker 1: Marty sounds just like fucking Ted. He's like the epitome
- 24:34Speaker 1: of like Boston. Like he sounds like straight ball like
- 24:37Speaker 1: Mark Wahlberg. Yes, sounds just like Mirk Whlberg when he talks.
- 24:40Speaker 2: That's great. Was it like shots of Mark Wahlberg, by
- 24:43Speaker 2: the way, who obviously is a fucking legend. Yo, you
- 24:46Speaker 2: got to get him out of rap retirements.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Another one, bro, Mark Wahlberg, He's not doing that shit.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Mike Wahlberg is making movies, making money, He's living his
- 24:54Speaker 1: best life. He's not trying to rap. But you know,
- 24:57Speaker 1: he definitely is somebody that puts his arm around me, Paul.
- 25:00Speaker 1: And you know he lets it be known that he's
- 25:03Speaker 1: a huge fan.
- 25:04Speaker 2: And did he give you any of his Jordan's yet,
- 25:06Speaker 2: because he's got those Jays. I think he's got a
- 25:07Speaker 2: couple of pairs now, the green ones.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Yeah. I haven't really rated his closet.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I'd be like, yo, fam, I needed like
- 25:13Speaker 2: I need a twelve.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I mean, I can't.
- 25:17Speaker 2: I'm on top of it, bro on top of the
- 25:19Speaker 2: pauses for you.
- 25:20Speaker 1: Pause, on top of it.
- 25:22Speaker 2: Pause.
- 25:22Speaker 1: But I've never talked to him about shoes, right. It's
- 25:25Speaker 1: really just like, Yo, what movies is popping right now?
- 25:27Speaker 1: What you got going on?
- 25:29Speaker 2: What kind slide?
- 25:31Speaker 1: Pause? I can't even talk. Yeah, we're getting crazy, We're
- 25:37Speaker 1: getting crazy. But but but yeah, So these people have
- 25:43Speaker 1: become like, you know, mentors to me, you know what
- 25:45Speaker 1: I'm saying. And it's always dope when you grow up
- 25:50Speaker 1: watching somebody on TV or listening to somebody's music and
- 25:53Speaker 1: then you know they become fans of you. You know,
- 25:56Speaker 1: same thing with Marshall, you know what I mean. It's
- 25:58Speaker 1: just perfect example of somebody that or Will or Mark
- 26:03Speaker 1: or you know whatever, Like these people are actually fans
- 26:05Speaker 1: of mine, you know, and it's like it's just it's
- 26:10Speaker 1: just a surreal feeling. It's pretty dope.
- 26:12Speaker 2: You know, you're somebody who I gravitated towards because five
- 26:16Speaker 2: o eight was like tied together. It's like a body
- 26:19Speaker 2: of work, like a concept album, if you will. And
- 26:21Speaker 2: I felt like, you know, in the last decade or so,
- 26:23Speaker 2: we've kind of gotten away from like people really just
- 26:27Speaker 2: being creative with albums, you know. I think like like
- 26:30Speaker 2: College Dropout was like there was a theme dropped that
- 26:32Speaker 2: whole album. The Skits tied it all together. Is there
- 26:34Speaker 2: anybody who's like creativeness that isn't hip hop that you
- 26:39Speaker 2: just kind of like recognize and you're like, yo, I
- 26:41Speaker 2: see what you're doing, Like that shit's dope, whether it's
- 26:43Speaker 2: a lyrically or visually or obviously someone who's came after
- 26:48Speaker 2: you pause, That was.
- 26:50Speaker 1: A good pause. Hey, yo, somebody where I'm like that,
- 26:56Speaker 1: I see what they're doing. Yeah, before me, after me,
- 27:04Speaker 1: like yo, J Cole of course, huge fan of J Cole. Yeah,
- 27:07Speaker 1: J Cole, Me and him have a really good friendship too.
- 27:09Speaker 1: But J Cole's fire.
- 27:12Speaker 2: What about someone newer, someone that's came after your paused?
- 27:15Speaker 1: M Yeah, that's good. Millis is doing his thing right now.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Sh shout out to my boy Millie. Milli's is f
- 27:25Speaker 1: out of Boston where I'm from.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Oh, I know. I met Millie's in a hotel room
- 27:28Speaker 2: at south By Southwest in two thousand and thirteen.
- 27:30Speaker 1: Yeah, but I M but I anybody that's coming from
- 27:33Speaker 1: where we come from, like cause it's really not it's
- 27:36Speaker 1: not a lot, No, it's not a lot. But it's
- 27:38Speaker 1: also really you know, you there's not a lot to
- 27:41Speaker 1: work with, you know what I mean, Because it's like,
- 27:45Speaker 1: you know this, it's not really it's not how you
- 27:46Speaker 1: go to New York and it's like a whole bunch
- 27:49Speaker 1: of opportunities there, or like Hollywood or Atlanta. You know,
- 27:52Speaker 1: it's like there's really not a lot of opportunities where
- 27:54Speaker 1: we're at. So it's like we had to create those,
- 27:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So for him to you know.
- 27:59Speaker 2: And he really like took the stairs for real, Like
- 28:03Speaker 2: he is not a new artist.
- 28:04Speaker 1: He's not. He's been. He's been. He's been doing his
- 28:06Speaker 1: shit for a minute, you know, and he's and he's
- 28:08Speaker 1: fired too.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Shout out to bea who also didn't take the stairs.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Another one, shout out to bea she didn't take the stairs.
- 28:13Speaker 1: And I knew Bea like.
- 28:15Speaker 2: She was when she was with rel back in the
- 28:17Speaker 2: day like twelve.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Years, like ten to twelve years. I'm known beer, you know,
- 28:21Speaker 1: and she's definitely someone that you know, she came from
- 28:25Speaker 1: where we come from, you know what I mean and
- 28:27Speaker 1: like I know her know heere like seeing to be
- 28:28Speaker 1: in the house together type shit. You know what I'm saying.
- 28:30Speaker 1: She was getting it was Bea who actually put me
- 28:33Speaker 1: on the Instagram. Really she made the Instagram.
- 28:36Speaker 2: It's like, you need to get this app.
- 28:37Speaker 1: Bea made Instagram for me.
- 28:38Speaker 2: But that's like twenty ten.
- 28:40Speaker 1: It's like it was like twenty ten. Oh no, no, no, no,
- 28:43Speaker 1: I don't know. It was twenty thirteen. For it wasn't
- 28:45Speaker 1: right when Instagram started. She was telling me I needed
- 28:48Speaker 1: to get on Instagram, and I was like anti social
- 28:51Speaker 1: media around like twenty thirteen fourteen. I didn't care about it.
- 28:54Speaker 1: I didn't want it. I'm like, yo, I'm outside passing
- 28:57Speaker 1: CDs out. I'm doing it the dinosaur way. I'm like
- 29:00Speaker 1: trying to hit the streets and ship, trying to go
- 29:02Speaker 1: to colleges and do it. And she's like, nah, nigga,
- 29:04Speaker 1: like social media is like where you need to be
- 29:06Speaker 1: at and she put she she had grabbed my She
- 29:10Speaker 1: made Instagram. She taught me how to use it. You know, yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 1: but shout out to be A.
- 29:17Speaker 2: I know, I know you got to go into sec.
- 29:19Speaker 2: The first four albums that come to mind just your
- 29:21Speaker 2: best top four ourms ever. But I'm thinking about it
- 29:26Speaker 2: too hard. Just what comes to me now?
- 29:27Speaker 1: You got to I mean, so that's I mean shift okay,
- 29:31Speaker 1: uh get rich of I Try and Marshall, Mother's Uppy,
- 29:48Speaker 1: missed Education, Laura Hill and I'm going through like a
- 29:55Speaker 1: rolodex my head right now.
- 30:01Speaker 2: It's grade three maybe a Kanye album.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I was just about to get to that. My
- 30:07Speaker 1: beautiful Dark tis the Fantasy.
- 30:09Speaker 2: That's a solid fucking four right there. Yeah, we'll listen
- 30:12Speaker 2: to the album's out right now. Man, it's I think
- 30:14Speaker 2: it's the best album of the year, personally saying that. No,
- 30:17Speaker 2: I promise you. When I first listened to it, I
- 30:19Speaker 2: was like, yo, this this is like because I had
- 30:22Speaker 2: Vultures as like my favorite shit of the year because
- 30:24Speaker 2: Vultures is fire shout out to so good to see
- 30:28Speaker 2: him have a number one song. But I just think
- 30:31Speaker 2: cohesively just for like, I think your album's amazing, bro,
- 30:34Speaker 2: It's fucking spectacular front to back. Everyone should go check
