- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, well here on the One Leg Up Network,
- 0:08Speaker 2: I'm Alex Garrett, and do you remember when I did
- 0:10Speaker 2: this one Leg Up flashback with Brandon Nimmo Colin, which
- 0:15Speaker 2: is why the Mets and Astros are tied at four
- 0:18Speaker 2: in the bottom of the ninth in a rain delay.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Oh two coming, and that's driven out to left center field.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Back in the cap here the wall time hair. Brandon
- 0:28Speaker 3: Nimmo ties the game with his one hundred career hormone,
- 0:33Speaker 3: a two run shot for Nimmo, and the Mets have
- 0:36Speaker 3: come back to tie at four to four.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Of the seventh.
- 0:44Speaker 1: That call courtesy of s n Y.
- 0:47Speaker 2: That's right, Brandon Nimmo, a two run shot opposite field
- 0:51Speaker 2: Jack his one hundredth, yes, one hundredth home run of
- 0:54Speaker 2: his career. Now, I got to talk to him when
- 0:57Speaker 2: he was in his younger stages, as I met back
- 1:01Speaker 2: in twenty seventeen, thanks to doctor Dan Miller's recommendation of a
- 1:05Speaker 2: press pass and his hook up there with WOX Radio, which.
- 1:09Speaker 1: This aired on.
- 1:10Speaker 2: By the way, here, Brandon and I talked about the
- 1:14Speaker 2: mentorship of Curtis Granderson and how yes, back in twenty seventeen,
- 1:21Speaker 2: Nimo was looking to improve and then of course today
- 1:24Speaker 2: he's improved so much he h at Homer one hundred.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So Brendan, you're starting tonight at part you know, you're
- 1:30Speaker 2: on the leadoff spot tonight. Yeah, but it's gonna be
- 1:32Speaker 2: a line up about Curtis I feel about that, And
- 1:34Speaker 2: how do you feel?
- 1:34Speaker 4: You know, we all love Curtis, but you know, it's
- 1:39Speaker 4: part of the business and so you have to you
- 1:40Speaker 4: have to realize that. For it's it's something that you know,
- 1:45Speaker 4: I think we all just have to go about our
- 1:46Speaker 4: business the same way. Remember how he went about his
- 1:50Speaker 4: Kitnatu was an incredible guy. He really led by example.
- 1:54Speaker 4: So just trying to you know, keep his work ethic
- 1:58Speaker 4: and his humble missile live.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Now even back up a little while now, So what's
- 2:02Speaker 1: it like being back up here? And what do you have?
- 2:04Speaker 1: You said, what are you working on?
- 2:05Speaker 4: You know, just just really having fun and and you know,
- 2:09Speaker 4: swinging the bat, you know, working on the teeth beads.
- 2:12Speaker 4: It's it's, you know, working on all of it. It's
- 2:15Speaker 4: it can all be improved. I think for the day
- 2:18Speaker 4: just stopped working, this day stopped playing. So you just
- 2:21Speaker 4: keep working on on your whole game, trying to improve
- 2:24Speaker 4: it all.
- 2:24Speaker 2: All right, Brandon, welcome luck to the rest of us
- 2:26Speaker 2: in the rush of the away games.
- 2:27Speaker 1: We got it, Thank you. I mean, how cool is that?
- 2:29Speaker 1: Brandon Nemo?
- 2:30Speaker 2: Nice guy, one of the nicest guys and honestly a
- 2:34Speaker 2: cornerstone to.
- 2:39Speaker 1: This met team until he wasn't.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Last night Jeff passing the ESPN room breaking the news
- 2:47Speaker 2: that Brandon Neimo waved his no trade clause in a
- 2:51Speaker 2: trade for Tech to Texas for Marcus Simeon. I think
- 2:57Speaker 2: it's interesting that back in twenty seventeen he recognized.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Trades are part of the business.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Life in baseball is also business, to the point where
- 3:07Speaker 2: eight years later in twenty twenty five, in twenty twenty five,
- 3:16Speaker 2: he is now waves his no trade claws and gone
- 3:19Speaker 2: to Texas. But Brandon Nimo is one of three New
- 3:24Speaker 2: York I would say icons are really hallmarks that had
- 3:32Speaker 2: departed because they had given the team a time, their
- 3:37Speaker 2: time and energy and love and said well it's time
- 3:43Speaker 2: to move along.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And I'm sure for Brandon making the NLCS, obviously we
- 3:50Speaker 1: saw the.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Emotions in his face when they made the NLCS against
- 3:53Speaker 2: the Dodgers.
- 3:56Speaker 1: I mean, he was on that one hundred and one
- 3:58Speaker 1: win team again and.
- 4:00Speaker 2: That got swip the by the Padres, which was unbelievable
- 4:05Speaker 2: at home. So then a couple of years later making
- 4:08Speaker 2: it to the NLCS versus the hot Dodgers just last
- 4:12Speaker 2: year and beating Philly of course, but in his seven
- 4:20Speaker 2: eight years actually I believe nine because he came in
- 4:24Speaker 2: twenty sixteen, what uh part of this met team. But
- 4:33Speaker 2: he waved his no trade class And that's what I
- 4:35Speaker 2: want to highlight tonight. Brandon Nimmo joining Chris Crider who
- 4:39Speaker 2: waved his trade no trade class to go to Anaheim.
- 4:43Speaker 2: And then of course John Tavares, who basically told the
- 4:46Speaker 2: Aliders he was gonna stay, of course does not stay,
- 4:52Speaker 2: basically requests to trade to Toronto. It begs the question here,
- 5:02Speaker 2: what do we do to make these teams more.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Staying power. I mean the Rangers, I guess told them
- 5:13Speaker 1: we're gonna trade them. So christ said, okay, trade me.
- 5:16Speaker 1: That's it. That was it.
- 5:19Speaker 2: But the no trade clause waving is the thing that
- 5:22Speaker 2: I wanna highlight because quite frankly, it means that these
- 5:30Speaker 2: guys are giving their heart and soul for a point
- 5:34Speaker 2: a period of time till they realize, maybe we cannot
- 5:38Speaker 2: win here, Maybe we do have to move along. Maybe
- 5:43Speaker 2: it is time to spread our wings and go elsewhere
- 5:46Speaker 2: and see if we can win that vaunted championship.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Toronto struggled.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Toronto has struggled even with Austin Matthews, to get to
- 5:57Speaker 2: that point as a.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Franchise, to get near the Stanley Cup final finals.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The Ducks, they're sort of rebuilding, and now criters come
- 6:07Speaker 2: in and electrified that team.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And now Brandon Nimmo.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Of the three leaving a Mets team that, yes, has
- 6:18Speaker 2: won Soto, but what pitching do they have?
- 6:23Speaker 1: What pitching do they have?
- 6:28Speaker 2: And so what's it going to take for our New
- 6:29Speaker 2: York teams to either not blow up the whole core
- 6:34Speaker 2: so that other guys don't want to be there anymore,
- 6:37Speaker 2: or start to focus on winning and not tanking and
- 6:41Speaker 2: non on draft picks and none on.
- 6:43Speaker 1: Who can be the next best guy.
- 6:47Speaker 2: We call up on the farm, you know, we we
- 6:53Speaker 2: calledivate on the farm, or next best free agent signing
- 6:56Speaker 2: we can grab the read no trade clause waves here
- 7:05Speaker 2: feel like a similar theme. New York does not have
- 7:10Speaker 2: the staying power we thought it once did.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Aaron Judge stayed.
- 7:16Speaker 2: Because I think he knew in his heart he's a
- 7:18Speaker 2: Yankee through and through Derek Jeter, lifelong Yankee through and
- 7:25Speaker 2: through David Wright. If he wasn't injured, yes, and of
- 7:30Speaker 2: his career has meant, but he would have been even
- 7:32Speaker 2: more successful as a Met if he didn't injure his
- 7:34Speaker 2: back like he did. There are lifelongers, we're just seeing
- 7:43Speaker 2: far and few between of them. And part of it
- 7:49Speaker 2: is a decision on management parts to blow up a
- 7:52Speaker 2: team now when you could have kept Goodro, you could
- 7:55Speaker 2: have kept Cocko, you could have kept well Truba was
- 7:59Speaker 2: a problem, but you could have kept those guys on
- 8:01Speaker 2: the Rangers. But you didn't, and Crider's gone. Now the
- 8:07Speaker 2: Mets need to rebuild, and clearly getting rid of Nemo was.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Part of the rebuilt. It's a sad day though, to
- 8:14Speaker 1: see Nimo go.
- 8:17Speaker 2: He was a decent player, a decent guy on and
- 8:19Speaker 2: off the field. He was a He bled the orange
- 8:23Speaker 2: and blue pinstripes right there. And so my question to
- 8:30Speaker 2: you at Alex at alex ganyc dot com, Alex at
- 8:34Speaker 2: alexanyc dot com, what will make the city have staying power?
- 8:41Speaker 2: We've lost it. Teams are even not not even afraid
- 8:46Speaker 2: to come into New York anymore because they might They
- 8:48Speaker 2: know they have a chance to win, a very good
- 8:49Speaker 2: chance to win.
- 8:51Speaker 1: We used to be a feared city.
- 8:53Speaker 2: We used to be the city no one ever wanted
- 8:55Speaker 2: to wave their no trade clause for. We used to
- 8:59Speaker 2: be the city that said, yes, we're gonna keep winning,
- 9:01Speaker 2: You're gonna keep staying here, We're gonna keep building. No,
- 9:05Speaker 2: it's all about imploding and sticking with coaches till the
- 9:10Speaker 2: very last second. I mean, Bowen should have been fired
- 9:15Speaker 2: after the Denver collapse.
- 9:18Speaker 1: It happened today. Fine, But it's just this systematic, systematic.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Problem of staying power that Brendan Nimo now joins Chris
- 9:34Speaker 2: Krider and John Deaveres in highlighting here.
- 9:38Speaker 1: In New York Sports.
- 9:42Speaker 2: So maybe the goal now is, instead of blowing up teams,
- 9:45Speaker 2: is to have one leg up on staying power for
- 9:48Speaker 2: our New York sports, one leg up on staying power
- 9:54Speaker 2: for New York sports.
- 9:55Speaker 1: How do we get there? How do we achieve it?
- 9:58Speaker 2: For the Yankees, you don't stick with the Devin Williams
- 10:02Speaker 2: for nine more times in the next season.
- 10:04Speaker 1: Maybe you do, Maybe you do resign them. I don't
- 10:06Speaker 1: like that reunion idea. But if I'm aren't judge and
- 10:16Speaker 1: I signed into a nine year.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Deal, one that did include a World's aias appearance, I
- 10:26Speaker 2: would want to see my management making the right moves here,
- 10:30Speaker 2: bringing the right guys.
- 10:31Speaker 1: In, and as fans.
- 10:35Speaker 2: As fans, we should want our teams to play with
- 10:40Speaker 2: respect and pride. It was five blown losses too long,
- 10:46Speaker 2: It was two blown losses too long for the Giants
- 10:50Speaker 2: to make the move of getting rid of Bowen. But
- 10:55Speaker 2: we make these.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Moves as a city way too late, way too late.
- 11:04Speaker 2: And maybe when you see a crider, when you see
- 11:07Speaker 2: a demo, when you see it Tavaris wave their no
- 11:11Speaker 2: trade clause. Basically, you're seeing these guys saying we don't
- 11:15Speaker 2: like the.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Way these teams are run.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And if they're not happy with the way the teams
- 11:19Speaker 2: are run, we sure as hell should be upset too.
- 11:23Speaker 2: We the fans should be upset, if our players are upset,
- 11:28Speaker 2: we should be upset, and we should want our teams
- 11:33Speaker 2: to strive for better, not be in the dumpster for
- 11:37Speaker 2: another draft pick because another rebuild.
- 11:41Speaker 1: I think Nemo is thinking, like I did, I'm getting
- 11:43Speaker 1: too old for this shit. I gotta move along before
- 11:48Speaker 1: especially now that started just kind of pushing me out
- 11:49Speaker 1: the door. I'm getting too old for this. I gotta
- 11:51Speaker 1: move along and do what's best for right for me.
- 11:52Speaker 1: What the business move for me. You don't want me here, fine,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I'm gone.
- 12:02Speaker 2: But that again goes to not having enough staying power.
- 12:09Speaker 2: At the same time, Trent Grisham signs a twenty two
- 12:14Speaker 2: million dollar deal to stay with the Yankees. To stay
- 12:19Speaker 2: with the Yankees, he believes in something here. He took
- 12:22Speaker 2: that deal.
- 12:24Speaker 1: People could be pissed, but I think the.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Show's character when a guy who was a free agent
- 12:28Speaker 2: wants to come back, wants to contribute to the Yankees
- 12:33Speaker 2: and build off the year he had. Maybe there's something
- 12:35Speaker 2: here that he sees that aren't judged so a few
- 12:38Speaker 2: years ago that made him come back beyond just wearing
- 12:40Speaker 2: the pinstripes. So in that case, we had staying power.
- 12:50Speaker 2: But in these other cases where these guys are waving
- 12:53Speaker 2: their no trade claws, we have to figure out a
- 12:57Speaker 2: way to keep these guys happy they don't feel like
- 13:00Speaker 2: they have to wave their no trade clause so that
- 13:02Speaker 2: they do want to be in this team for the
- 13:05Speaker 2: rest of their career, and as Lou and I talk about,
- 13:11Speaker 2: I think getting rid of analytics and all these sports
- 13:14Speaker 2: will be big. I think the idea of blowing up
- 13:16Speaker 2: teams should go out the window. I think you got
- 13:19Speaker 2: to figure out the core.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Remember we talk about the Yankees the Core four.
- 13:24Speaker 2: There is no core anything anymore with any of these teams,
- 13:32Speaker 2: and the Mets lost their core. He waved his no
- 13:41Speaker 2: trade clause. And I do not blame Brandon Nimo for this.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I think he's doing what he needs to do his
- 13:47Speaker 2: first family. But it should be a wake up call.
- 13:54Speaker 2: How do we stay attractive as a market, as a
- 14:00Speaker 2: city of all these sports teams, to make these guys
- 14:04Speaker 2: stay through their career.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And love it here.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Because you'll see other career, other trade clauses might be
- 14:19Speaker 2: waved down the road by somebody.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I mean, this is really a big deal to me.
- 14:33Speaker 2: That he is the third guy in a span of
- 14:37Speaker 2: about ten years to wave as no trains that I'm moving,
- 14:44Speaker 2: I'm leaving, I'm doing something better. I believe in what
- 14:48Speaker 2: Texas is doing now, but we can do better as
- 14:56Speaker 2: a city to make this more attractive for these guys
- 14:59Speaker 2: to stay in the pin stripes. Whether it's orange and
- 15:02Speaker 2: blue or the Yankee pin stripes. Stay in the blue shirts,
- 15:10Speaker 2: stay in the Big blue, the game green, the Devil's red,
- 15:15Speaker 2: the Islander's blue and orange. And it's a top down effect,
- 15:27Speaker 2: a top down effect. The Giants have an interim firing
- 15:33Speaker 2: a defensive coordinator. Where was the guts to fire him before?
- 15:38Speaker 2: If Davill could have the option, whine and he to
- 15:40Speaker 2: do it, and Marr had the option, whin, didn't you
- 15:44Speaker 2: to do it? So if you look at this latest
- 15:50Speaker 2: note trade Claus Wave and this trader Brandon Neimo.
- 15:57Speaker 1: That's a wake up call.
- 16:02Speaker 2: That the long standing Met who's been there since twenty
- 16:06Speaker 2: sixteen is moving along.
- 16:12Speaker 1: The city is not gonna be meant for career year
- 16:15Speaker 1: career players anymore.
- 16:18Speaker 2: On the trajectory we're going, and maybe the culture of
- 16:24Speaker 2: winning and the culture of respect and pride on the field.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I mean, he also went through a season where the
- 16:30Speaker 2: Mets completely screwed up their season. They were the best
- 16:35Speaker 2: team in June, then they just tanked Dove out of
- 16:39Speaker 2: the playoffs.
- 16:45Speaker 1: It was stunning.
- 16:46Speaker 2: This year. I think Nemo saw that there wasn't gonna
- 16:54Speaker 2: be much change, so he moved and he went and
- 16:58Speaker 2: accept the not trade that waving the trade close except to.
- 17:01Speaker 1: The deal, and he's on the greener pastures if you will.
- 17:08Speaker 2: So all these teams watching this moment, know your career
- 17:15Speaker 2: player wants to be happy and wants a team around
- 17:20Speaker 2: him to make them happy so that they're not slipping
- 17:25Speaker 2: and falling short.
- 17:26Speaker 1: Every season.
- 17:28Speaker 2: These guys will go out there just to play one
- 17:30Speaker 2: sixty two and go home. They play to win the game,
- 17:35Speaker 2: as Herman Edwoods said, and Brendan Nimmo was an example,
- 17:40Speaker 2: a shining example of that. He had one leg up
- 17:44Speaker 2: in New York sports and we will miss him dearly.
- 17:47Speaker 2: But just think about this, how do we have staying
- 17:51Speaker 2: power in New York City for these career athletes that
- 17:55Speaker 2: should want to spend their time in New York and
- 17:59Speaker 2: not want a way. There're no trade claws. Let's make
- 18:05Speaker 2: the city more attractive and make this a sports town
- 18:11Speaker 2: once again.
