- 0:04Speaker 2: Did you know that diabetes, heart disease, and prostate cancer
- 0:07Speaker 2: procedures can contribute to erectile dysfunction? Many men are no- Now,
- 0:11Speaker 2: from the Star Reynolds Sports Desk, your 93.3 KKRFM Sports Headlines.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Good morning, happy Labor Day weekend, Friday. Oh, what?
- 0:21Speaker 3: We don't have to work on Monday?
- 0:22Speaker 4: No.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Yes, we do.
- 0:25Speaker 4: I do.
- 0:25Speaker 2: You do.
- 0:26Speaker 5: Yep.
- 0:26Speaker 2: We all do. Headlines are ready by Frost Booth, Coors Light,
- 0:29Speaker 2: Choose Chill, Colt as the Rockies. That too. The Mariners.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Do we laugh or cry? 18 times.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Can we both? I laugh, cry sometimes.
- 0:40Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Laugh, cry maybe. That might be the Mariners season. Laugh
- 0:44Speaker 2: and cry. More crying than laughing. 18 times they struck
- 0:47Speaker 2: out last night against the Lillias. They lost a 3-1
- 0:50Speaker 2: lead early. Kate Anderson was not dominant, and the M's
- 0:53Speaker 2: lost the game. 7-4 to begin a homestand against the
- 0:56Speaker 2: AL West. They can't be giving away games, and they did.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Trash cans won. Mariners are now nine games under.
- 1:04Speaker 6: 500.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Six games out of first place. Maybe we shouldn't even
- 1:06Speaker 2: mention the standings. If you're nine games out of under. 500,
- 1:09Speaker 2: just forget about first place.
- 1:12Speaker 6: Yeah, let's.
- 1:12Speaker 2: 21 games left.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Let's focus on the positive.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:17Speaker 7: The positive is the season will end.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Oh, Greg, that's sad.
- 1:23Speaker 7: This season is driving me nuts.
- 1:25Speaker 6: And I know I'm not the only one.
- 1:26Speaker 3: I think that the Mariner fans out there agree.
- 1:29Speaker 2: I know. Heaven have pity on all of you.
- 1:32Speaker 3: But the passion still exists.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Jesslyn's really checking out the passion versus apathy meter. And
- 1:39Speaker 2: it's right on the edge.
- 1:41Speaker 8: It is.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Game two of the four-game series against the Athletics tonight.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Logan Gilbert starts with the M's. Another fireworks sing-along night,
- 1:47Speaker 2: so there'll be 45,000 in the yard. George Kirby starts
- 1:50Speaker 2: tomorrow night. I think it's bobblehead night for Brian Wu.
- 1:52Speaker 2: So there'll be another 40-plus thousand tomorrow night.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Okay, those are Funko Pop, and they're super cute.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Is it a Funko Pop or a bobblehead?
- 2:00Speaker 3: I saw Funko. I might be wrong.
- 2:03Speaker 7: Brian Wu starts on Sunday.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Munoz was the Funko. I think Brian might be the bobble.
- 2:08Speaker 4: See?
- 2:09Speaker 2: This is why the Mariners are not where they need
- 2:11Speaker 2: to be. It's fun! The accent's on the wrong syllable.
- 2:14Speaker 2: The Seahawks return to practice after a three-day break. Five
- 2:18Speaker 2: days until the NFL opener against New England at Lumen Field.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Nicky Manwari practiced. The short time I was able to
- 2:24Speaker 2: watch it, he was stretching and doing stuff on his own.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Warming up mostly separate from his teammates. I think it's
- 2:30Speaker 2: iffy if he plays Wednesday. Sweeping changes of the Pro
- 2:33Speaker 2: Football Hall of Fame selection process this morning in the
- 2:36Speaker 2: wake of the fiasco last year that Bill Belichick failed
- 2:38Speaker 2: to get in. Everyone up in arms that Bill Belichick
- 2:41Speaker 2: didn't get in. Meanwhile, Mike Holmgren should have been in
- 2:43Speaker 2: a decade ago.
- 2:44Speaker 6: Thank you!
- 2:46Speaker 3: Michael Scott.
- 2:47Speaker 7: No more senior category.
- 2:49Speaker 2: The Board of Electors selectors will be reduced from 50
- 2:52Speaker 2: to 28. 25 members of the selection committee will be
- 2:56Speaker 2: voting members in three alternates. There will no longer be
- 2:59Speaker 2: one selector from each of the home markets of the
- 3:01Speaker 2: 32 NFL teams. Mike Sando was the one here in Seattle.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Phenomenal edit, I would say.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Predecessor of mine at the News Tribune as well. Instead,
- 3:11Speaker 2: one person who's not on the selection committee are going
- 3:13Speaker 2: to present all the candidates each year. We'll see if
- 3:16Speaker 2: this right's the wrong and Mike Holmgren not being in
- 3:18Speaker 2: the hall. Criticized WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engbert. She's out. She's
- 3:23Speaker 2: retiring at the end of this league season. She's been
- 3:26Speaker 2: criticized by star players for being negligent and that the
- 3:30Speaker 2: league has the worst leadership in the world. So maybe
- 3:33Speaker 2: it'll get better than that without Kathy.
- 3:35Speaker 8: The world?
- 3:36Speaker 2: Yeah, the world.
- 3:37Speaker 3: That's a little hyperbolic, but.
- 3:39Speaker 7: Nafisa Collier of Minnesota said that last year.
- 3:42Speaker 2: The Sounders, tomorrow they host the New York Red Bulls,
- 3:45Speaker 2: 5.30 p.m. at Lumen Field. Now on with the Friday show.
- 3:48Speaker 2: It's a good one. Good morning. Happy Friday. Happy Labor
- 3:51Speaker 2: Day weekend.
- 3:52Speaker 7: Jessamyn McInnes is already dancing to Mark Morrison.
- 3:54Speaker 3: How could I not?
- 3:56Speaker 2: Thank you. Ensign Sarah Bell appreciates that. I got one
- 4:00Speaker 2: week till I'm seeing Sarah Bell.
- 4:03Speaker 3: In the most beautiful place.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Oh, man. I get to go to Hawaii. I'm very
- 4:08Speaker 2: excited for the Seahawks opener because the next morning I'm.
- 4:11Speaker 7: Flying to Hawaii with my wife to see our daughter.
- 4:13Speaker 5: What a beautiful way to spend the beginning of September.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Man, that's going to be great.
- 4:19Speaker 3: If you do not see whales, I'm going to be
- 4:21Speaker 3: very mad.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good question because there's been storms galore
- 4:24Speaker 2: through Hawaii lately and a lot of unusually severe storms
- 4:29Speaker 2: and a lot of rain. I know there's monsoon season there,
- 4:31Speaker 2: but my daughter was saying this is a little abnormal.
- 4:34Speaker 3: Is she good?
- 4:35Speaker 4: She good. She good.
- 4:36Speaker 2: But when it does storm, they have to batten down
- 4:39Speaker 2: hatches and report to the boat and get ready for
- 4:42Speaker 2: emergency ops in the Coast Guard. You know, as soon
- 4:45Speaker 2: as it gets the storm is when they start heading out.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Everyone comes in and the Coast Guard goes out. That's
- 4:49Speaker 2: a famous saying of the Coast Guard. On the show today,
- 4:53Speaker 2: we're going to debut something. We're going to continue through
- 4:55Speaker 2: November into December. The debut of our High School Football
- 4:58Speaker 2: Friday feature. It's going to be cool, man. I'm excited
- 5:02Speaker 2: about this. I really want to trumpet, especially the coaches
- 5:06Speaker 2: who give so much of their time to high school
- 5:10Speaker 2: athletics to further young men and women and to give
- 5:12Speaker 2: their opportunities to further their education and their athletics, perhaps
- 5:16Speaker 2: in college. So we're going to talk to the head
- 5:18Speaker 2: coaches of the game of the state tonight. It's No.
- 5:21Speaker 2: 3 against No. 4 in Class 4A. Graham Kapowson is
- 5:25Speaker 2: heading up to Lake Stevens tonight. And we're talking to
- 5:28Speaker 2: both coaches, Jeff Logan of Graham Kapowson. You'll hear from
- 5:31Speaker 2: him at 11 o'clock. And right after that, you'll hear
- 5:33Speaker 2: from Tom Try. He's the head coach of Lake Stevens,
- 5:36Speaker 2: a multi-time state championship winning coach in his own right.
- 5:41Speaker 2: You'll hear from both of them at 11 o'clock. We're
- 5:43Speaker 2: going to do this every week, every Friday. We have
- 5:46Speaker 2: a whole list of games and coaches we want to
- 5:48Speaker 2: talk to and players we want to highlight. Go ahead.
- 5:52Speaker 5: I was just going to say, in the world of
- 5:55Speaker 5: how we are talking about sports changing so much and
- 5:59Speaker 5: how it has become a little too professionalized at younger ages.
- 6:03Speaker 3: This feature means a lot to me.
- 6:06Speaker 5: My father started, obviously, high school coaching before he ended
- 6:11Speaker 5: up going into college. And it is just so great
- 6:17Speaker 5: to hear from these guys because you do it for
- 6:19Speaker 5: the love of the game. You do it for the
- 6:22Speaker 5: love of those who you are bringing up into the sport.
- 6:26Speaker 5: And Those are people I want to hear from.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Me too. They do it. You're exactly right, Jessamyn. They
- 6:33Speaker 2: do it with almost no pay. I mean, it's like
- 6:36Speaker 2: a couple thousand dollars to do 60 hours a week
- 6:39Speaker 2: of work. And a lot of them teach in the
- 6:41Speaker 2: schools that they coach at, which is a whole nother
- 6:43Speaker 2: level of development and interest in time. It's great. And
- 6:49Speaker 2: there's time. There's room. I know this is a pro
- 6:51Speaker 2: sports town. It's a Washington Huskies town. But there's room
- 6:54Speaker 2: for this, and there's room to highlight those who do this.
- 6:57Speaker 5: I think we have a lot of listeners who actually
- 6:59Speaker 5: care a lot. That's why I love this market. We're
- 7:02Speaker 5: a big market. I mean, if you want to get
- 7:05Speaker 5: in to pull the curtain aside, we are a top
- 7:08Speaker 5: 13 market in this country.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And people in this one, in Seattle, and.
- 7:14Speaker 5: Our surrounding areas who are listening care a They care
- 7:19Speaker 5: about youth sports. And I think that this station has
- 7:22Speaker 5: done an amazing job over the years of continuing to
- 7:25Speaker 5: put them in the limelight.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Not only is it Lake Stevens, Graham Kapowson and I,
- 7:30Speaker 2: there's a texter, 360, Jason, who is always asking me
- 7:34Speaker 2: to trumpet this and James, excuse me, 360. And he's
- 7:38Speaker 2: exactly right. He said, hey, can you please give some
- 7:41Speaker 2: respect or love to the longest running high school rivalry
- 7:44Speaker 2: game this side of the Mississippi River? It started in 1906,
- 7:48Speaker 2: Aberdeen and Hoquiam.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I did not know that.
- 7:51Speaker 2: They play each other every year since 1906, man. We're
- 7:55Speaker 2: in 2026. And tonight, the Myrtle Street Rivalry is the
- 8:00Speaker 2: 121st meeting down in Aberdeen. I mean, I've been down there.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I scheduled a game and played down there, and the
- 8:07Speaker 2: stadium is a gem. I scheduled a baseball game just
- 8:12Speaker 2: to play in the stadium down there. It's a wooden stadium.
- 8:15Speaker 2: built with a war effort and bonds back in the
- 8:21Speaker 2: World War I era. It's cool. It's a really neat setting.
- 8:25Speaker 2: And tonight, Aberdeen and Hoquiam are playing out on the coast,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and I didn't want to lose track of that. So
- 8:31Speaker 2: thank you, James.
- 8:31Speaker 4: You're right.
- 8:32Speaker 2: That is yet another. This is what our sports and
- 8:35Speaker 2: tableau across the fall and Friday nights are across the country.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I grew up in Ohio where I played in front
- 8:41Speaker 2: of 12,000 fans in a town that had 20,000 people
- 8:43Speaker 2: in it. I played in front of 30, 35,000 people
- 8:47Speaker 2: at Ohio state's horseshoe and Ohio stadium for the state
- 8:50Speaker 2: championship game two years in a row. Yeah. I, I,
- 8:54Speaker 2: I hats off to all of you men and women
- 8:57Speaker 2: who coach, who teach and coach, who spend all the
- 9:01Speaker 2: time and time and time to develop young women and men.
- 9:04Speaker 2: And it's character building and it's all of that. It's,
- 9:08Speaker 2: There's a lot that goes into high school and youth sports,
- 9:11Speaker 2: and we have been bagging it a lot and talking
- 9:13Speaker 2: about the specialization and the money and soccer, how this
- 9:18Speaker 2: country's backwards with that, and baseball and the travel teams. Yes,
- 9:22Speaker 2: high school football, those guys are at its core. That's
- 9:25Speaker 2: where it started.
- 9:28Speaker 5: And another point I wanted to make, but people think that,
- 9:32Speaker 5: let's say, you're pros.
- 9:35Speaker 3: Coaching is very, very a special skill.
- 9:39Speaker 5: You don't just become a professional athlete and get to
- 9:42Speaker 5: be a coach. There's a select few who have done it.
- 9:45Speaker 5: We've seen Deion Sanders, and that's a whole other thing.
- 9:50Speaker 5: But you start from the bottom all over again, even
- 9:54Speaker 5: if you're a multimillionaire. You can't just go into it.
- 9:58Speaker 5: And I like that. coaching has stayed that way for
- 10:02Speaker 5: the majority of it. And that you have to learn again.
- 10:07Speaker 5: And you're learning and teaching at the same time. I
- 10:11Speaker 5: think it's a very special skill. And I'm really excited
- 10:13Speaker 5: that we're doing this.
- 10:15Speaker 2: I didn't do a great job of that as a
- 10:16Speaker 2: high school baseball coach. Learning and evolving.
- 10:18Speaker 8: I was.
- 10:19Speaker 2: a little bit stuck in my ways, to be honest
- 10:21Speaker 2: with you. And I needed to be better at that.
- 10:23Speaker 3: Greg, you're a West Point crutch. That doesn't shock me.
- 10:26Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean, yeah, I guess that stereotype fits.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But I needed to be better at that. And these
- 10:34Speaker 2: men and women who coach today and the challenges of
- 10:37Speaker 2: just keeping kids on the field, a lot of kids
- 10:39Speaker 2: don't want to do it anymore. Or they want to
- 10:41Speaker 2: have other things that are pulling them away or social
- 10:43Speaker 2: media or their friends hanging out.
- 10:46Speaker 7: It's just different than it used to be.
- 10:48Speaker 2: And Maybe it's always been like that with kids, but
- 10:51Speaker 2: there's a special place in my heart for high school coaches,
- 10:55Speaker 2: youth sports coaches, the time they spend.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Oh, it's eons.
- 11:00Speaker 2: It's incredible the amount of time. I used to get
- 11:02Speaker 2: on a bus at 7 a.m. on a Saturday, go up,
- 11:05Speaker 2: play a doubleheader down in Vancouver somewhere. We'd play Columbia River.
- 11:08Speaker 2: We'd come back about midnight or 1 a.m. You're on
- 11:12Speaker 2: a yellow school bus, and you know what I mean?
- 11:14Speaker 2: It And I wouldn't trade that for anything. We had
- 11:16Speaker 2: a blast. It was great.
- 11:17Speaker 3: There's someone keeping you safe the whole time.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And teaching you.
- 11:21Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 11:21Speaker 3: And coaching you.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 11:22Speaker 10: Exactly.
- 11:23Speaker 2: And yeah, that's hats off again to all you coaches
- 11:27Speaker 2: out there and parents too. I mean, you get up
- 11:29Speaker 2: and you get up all hours to practice.
- 11:33Speaker 3: They are dedicated as heck.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. We're going to talk to Farhan Lalji, TSN
- 11:38Speaker 2: Canada's NFL guy, a friend of ours, popular in the
- 11:41Speaker 2: text line. He'll be back today. He's going to talk
- 11:43Speaker 2: about the Seahawks opener. He's going to be there Wednesday night.
- 11:46Speaker 2: He's also going to be in Kansas City at Arrowhead
- 11:47Speaker 2: Stadium for the first Monday night game of the season.
- 11:49Speaker 2: The Denver Broncos at the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night. 1045,
- 11:52Speaker 2: we're going to hear from the newest Seahawks quarterback, cornerback
- 11:57Speaker 2: with a C, Avery Smith. In the unusual way he
- 12:01Speaker 2: got to the Seahawks last weekend and why he's surprised
- 12:03Speaker 2: to be here, it's unique. His story is a little
- 12:06Speaker 2: bit different.
- 12:07Speaker 5: Well, I think the People want to know because that's
- 12:10Speaker 5: not a name that rolls off of anyone's top of mind.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Avery Smith is from Toledo, the University of Toledo. He's
- 12:18Speaker 2: an undrafted rookie free agent. And the Seahawks just traded
- 12:23Speaker 2: a sixth round draft pick. John Schneider traded a sixth
- 12:25Speaker 2: round draft pick to get an undrafted rookie free agent.
- 12:28Speaker 2: You know how rare it is to trade for a
- 12:30Speaker 2: rookie free agent before he's even played his first NFL game,
- 12:33Speaker 2: before he's even had a first week in the NFL
- 12:35Speaker 2: regular season? That's rare. It's rare. And Avery Smith knows it.
- 12:40Speaker 2: He talked about that when I asked him yesterday about
- 12:42Speaker 2: his surprise of being traded.
- 12:44Speaker 7: That's what he talked about. You'll hear from him at 1045.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Imagine being wanted by a Super Bowl winning champion.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Exactly. In this defense. Exactly. And it shows how Mike
- 12:55Speaker 2: McDonald is not satisfied with the third quarter cornerbacks he
- 12:59Speaker 2: has tried. Think about it. They had no egg monogamy.
- 13:02Speaker 2: They cut him. The Cleveland Browns have since signed him.
- 13:05Speaker 2: They had Nehemiah Pritchett, the third-year unproven draft pick from
- 13:08Speaker 2: a few years ago. He's still on the roster. But
- 13:12Speaker 2: if he was in their plans, they'd start a training
- 13:14Speaker 2: camp with him. And since that training camp began, they
- 13:17Speaker 2: have signed Teron Arnold, who's facing eight felonies. They have
- 13:21Speaker 2: signed Trevon Diggs, who hasn't played a full season since 2022.
- 13:25Speaker 2: And they have traded a draft pick next year, a
- 13:27Speaker 2: sixth-round pick, for an undrafted rookie free agent. That's how
- 13:30Speaker 2: much they're looking for a third corner.
- 13:32Speaker 5: I think if there's any way, I know that Pete
- 13:34Speaker 5: Carroll used to churn the roster so hard, but if
- 13:37Speaker 5: there's any way to describe what Mike McDonald's strategy is,
- 13:42Speaker 5: it's churning the defensive backfield.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Yeah, especially a corner. And again, he wants to have
- 13:47Speaker 2: a third corner he can trust so he can move
- 13:50Speaker 2: Devin Witherspoon inside. And now Avery Smith played, he told me,
- 13:54Speaker 2: played 75% of the preseason for the Chargers in nickel.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I don't think he's here to play nickel. I really do.
- 14:01Speaker 3: I think you're right about the spoon move.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I know, Devin. I know for a fact. McDonald has
- 14:06Speaker 2: talked about wanting Witherspoon inside because he affects the game
- 14:09Speaker 2: more directly there, and he can blitz him more, and
- 14:11Speaker 2: he has a more direct path to quarterback. He can
- 14:14Speaker 2: guard more receivers. He can make more plays on the
- 14:16Speaker 2: ball across the middle, and he can be in on
- 14:18Speaker 2: the run game because at 180 pounds, he tackles like
- 14:21Speaker 2: he's 230. McDonald wants to play Witherspoon and nickel, but
- 14:25Speaker 2: he can only do that if he has a third
- 14:26Speaker 2: corner he can trust. He had one, well, he had
- 14:29Speaker 2: one he could mostly trust in Rick Woolen. He would
- 14:32Speaker 2: do things that would just drive McDonald crazy, like the
- 14:34Speaker 2: NFC title game taunting up and down the sidelines of
- 14:36Speaker 2: the Rams after a third down stop that cost him
- 14:39Speaker 2: points and almost a Super Bowl berth. But since letting
- 14:43Speaker 2: Woolen go to Philadelphia for $ 12 million in one year,
- 14:47Speaker 2: they're on a search. They didn't like Pritchett enough because
- 14:50Speaker 2: they started putting Noah Ibnaghani in. They didn't like Ibnaghani enough.
- 14:55Speaker 2: They cut him.
- 14:56Speaker 3: I was a little surprised by that.
- 14:57Speaker 2: I was too. And the Browns picked him up on
- 14:59Speaker 2: the active roster, so he's not coming back to the
- 15:01Speaker 2: practice squad. And now they're trading for an undrafted rookie,
- 15:04Speaker 2: Avery Smith, that he is really on a search. Now,
- 15:08Speaker 2: the hope now is that Diggs can ramp up enough,
- 15:11Speaker 2: Javon Diggs can ramp up enough to be that guy.
- 15:13Speaker 2: And eventually, the plan longer term is to tear on
- 15:16Speaker 2: Arnold to get out of his legal situation in Florida,
- 15:19Speaker 2: if you call it situation.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Is a loaded word there.
- 15:22Speaker 2: And then you have a third corner you can trust,
- 15:25Speaker 2: and he would only be 23 years old in the
- 15:27Speaker 2: case of Arnold. But McDonald in the near term is
- 15:30Speaker 2: really rooting for Trevon Diggs to speed up and get going.
- 15:33Speaker 2: He's on the practice squad right now. So that's the
- 15:35Speaker 2: third cornerback situation for the Seahawks.
- 15:37Speaker 5: I am very glad that he cleared, by the way.
- 15:40Speaker 3: I did not think that he.
- 15:42Speaker 2: No, well, he was an unrestricted free agent because of
- 15:45Speaker 2: his service time, so he wasn't subject to waivers. Oh,
- 15:47Speaker 2: he wasn't. And that was the whole deal. That was
- 15:50Speaker 2: the reason why they did it. is really they bought
- 15:53Speaker 2: two spots. They could keep Pritchett and keep Diggs because
- 15:57Speaker 2: he didn't have to go through waivers.
- 15:58Speaker 3: Man, there's so much legalese.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a bunch of red tape.
- 16:02Speaker 3: I'm glad that Diggs is still in the system. I
- 16:05Speaker 3: will just say that.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Yes. Yes.
- 16:07Speaker 2: And he could have left. He could have gone unrestricted
- 16:10Speaker 2: if someone had offered him a 53 spot. But you
- 16:13Speaker 2: saw the episode on Hard Knocks, Mike McDonald bringing him
- 16:15Speaker 2: into the office going, you know what our deal is, right?
- 16:17Speaker 2: This is our plan for you. You understand what we're
- 16:19Speaker 2: trying to do. We want to bring you to the
- 16:21Speaker 2: practice squad so we'll buy you some more time to
- 16:22Speaker 2: get ready for the season and blah, blah, blah.
- 16:24Speaker 3: That transparency.
- 16:27Speaker 5: I don't know if it's just Hard Knocks being behind
- 16:29Speaker 5: the scenes, but the transparency that I've seen with this
- 16:32Speaker 5: team is kind of second to none.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Yeah, it works. I mean, some teams are like this,
- 16:37Speaker 2: but Cooper Cupp was explaining that not every team is
- 16:40Speaker 2: like this in the NFL, and he implied the Rams
- 16:42Speaker 2: weren't like this.
- 16:43Speaker 5: And we're not privy to it. We don't get to
- 16:46Speaker 5: see it. We're one of 32 markets that has one.
- 16:49Speaker 5: And I have just seen the way that John Schneider
- 16:53Speaker 5: and Mike McDonald operate, previously Pete Carroll, and I feel
- 16:57Speaker 5: like there's a lot more transparency than I've seen in
- 17:00Speaker 5: professional sports.
- 17:02Speaker 2: You're right.
- 17:02Speaker 7: It's usually more transactional and pretty cold.
- 17:05Speaker 3: It is a business.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Yes, it is.
- 17:06Speaker 5: So I respect that as well. I just appreciate the
- 17:09Speaker 5: human touch.
- 17:11Speaker 2: At 1130, we'll be back. Speaking of human touch, you
- 17:13Speaker 2: get a chance to be a part of the show.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Chime in.
- 17:15Speaker 3: Give me your voices.
- 17:16Speaker 2: She wants your voices, and she'll play them back at
- 17:19Speaker 2: 1130 on the talk box.
- 17:19Speaker 3: If you're driving, please use Siri.
- 17:22Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, I guess you could do that.
- 17:24Speaker 3: No, just don't touch your phone while you're driving. That's
- 17:28Speaker 3: all I was saying.
- 17:29Speaker 7: This segment brought to you by the Washington State Department
- 17:31Speaker 7: of Transportation.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And then also at 1130, your text on the 49451
- 17:35Speaker 2: Tacoma Dodge text line.
- 17:37Speaker 7: Thanks already for the one for Hoke, William, and Aberdeen
- 17:39Speaker 7: also tonight.
- 17:41Speaker 3: We have a lot of excitement about the high school segment.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I'm glad to see that. That's great. Up next, my
- 17:46Speaker 2: buddy Farhan Lalji, TSN Canada. We're going to talk NFL
- 17:49Speaker 2: all around the league. The Browns quarterback situation. How long
- 17:51Speaker 2: is Kirk Cousins going to be the Raiders' number one guy?
- 17:54Speaker 2: Way more to talk about in the NFL next on
- 17:56Speaker 2: 93.3 KJRFM. Welcome back. First big football weekend of the season,
- 18:25Speaker 2: Labor Day weekend. High school football started last night. I refereed, officiated,
- 18:30Speaker 2: I was a side wing official for Ballard beating Lincoln
- 18:34Speaker 2: of Seattle 23-6. Then the NFL season gets going next Wednesday. Seahawks-Patriots.
- 18:44Speaker 2: And then college football in between. A lot of college
- 18:46Speaker 2: football this weekend since the NFL isn't going on. I've
- 18:48Speaker 2: got Sunday games. I know Notre Dame's playing on Sunday.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Ole Miss is playing. Yeah, there's a lot going on
- 18:56Speaker 2: this weekend in college football, high school football. Also going
- 18:59Speaker 2: on this weekend, Jessamyn, I'm dating myself. You may not
- 19:02Speaker 2: know this reference. Culture Club and Boy George are playing
- 19:06Speaker 2: a show at the Washington State Fair. At least I
- 19:10Speaker 2: saw that. Am I making that up? How are they
- 19:14Speaker 2: still a band? That was like 1985, right?
- 19:18Speaker 3: Culture Club. The club in New York City is actually
- 19:22Speaker 3: super fun.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Do you know the band Culture Club? Boy George was
- 19:25Speaker 2: the front.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Yes.
- 19:28Speaker 2: There's a concert, apparently.
- 19:31Speaker 4: And that.
- 19:31Speaker 7: Is that the Washington State Fair in Monroe?
- 19:35Speaker 2: That's a rumor. I'd have to check that out. I
- 19:39Speaker 2: think I got an email on there. Yeah, tonight. Boy
- 19:42Speaker 2: George Culture Club.
- 19:43Speaker 3: In New York City. Super fun. And it is just
- 19:47Speaker 3: 80s round the table.
- 19:49Speaker 2: But the band. from England is Culture Club.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker 4: Yes.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Very well aware of that.
- 19:54Speaker 5: It outdated me a little bit because I just like
- 19:59Speaker 5: to relive the 80s.
- 20:00Speaker 3: That's when I grew up.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Oh, I got a release just now. This is Do
- 20:03Speaker 2: the Puyallup with Boy George and Culture Club with special
- 20:06Speaker 2: guest Wang Chung. Is this like 1987? That's crazy. Tonight,
- 20:15Speaker 2: September 4th in Puyallup, 7.30 p.m., Boy George and Culture Club.
- 20:19Speaker 4: Come on, 49451.
- 20:20Speaker 2: In Puyallup? Yeah.
- 20:24Speaker 3: I might have to take a road trip.
- 20:27Speaker 2: I mean, yeah. 49451.
- 20:30Speaker 7: Our next guest might know.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Yeah, far on.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Boy George and Culture Club.
- 20:33Speaker 5: Have you ever been to Culture Club, the club, or
- 20:37Speaker 5: any of Boy George's stuff?
- 20:40Speaker 11: I have no idea. I can't say I've been to
- 20:43Speaker 11: a concert. Come on, come on, come on, come on,
- 20:45Speaker 11: come on. Yes!
- 20:46Speaker 12: Yes!
- 20:47Speaker 2: I was going to do it, but I didn't want
- 20:49Speaker 2: to give it away. Yes! There you go.
- 20:52Speaker 11: I know the song, the big song, and a couple others,
- 20:54Speaker 11: but I can't say I've ever been to a club
- 20:56Speaker 11: named after him or gone to one of his concerts.
- 20:59Speaker 2: So there you go. Farhan never disappoints. Farhan Lalji, TSN Canada,
- 21:05Speaker 2: our NFL guy from up in B.C. coming down to
- 21:08Speaker 2: join us on Wednesday at the Opener of the Seahawks
- 21:12Speaker 2: and the Patriots. Last week, if I'm not mistaken, we
- 21:14Speaker 2: were out at Renton together watching practice. You threw in
- 21:17Speaker 2: kind of a line that said, I think the Patriots
- 21:19Speaker 2: aren't even going to make the playoffs. Am I right
- 21:21Speaker 2: about that? And why do you say that?
- 21:23Speaker 11: You're going to miss the playoffs?
- 21:25Speaker 2: I thought you said that. The Patriots aren't going to
- 21:27Speaker 2: make the playoffs. Yes.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Why?
- 21:29Speaker 13: Yeah, I absolutely said that.
- 21:31Speaker 11: I think they're totally going to miss the ball. Look
- 21:34Speaker 11: at their record. It was completely inflated. You look at
- 21:37Speaker 11: the roster this year, the challenges that are on there,
- 21:40Speaker 11: particularly on the ball, and they're ridiculously fit. Like, I
- 21:44Speaker 11: don't know who they're for this team when they're healthy.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Let alone you lose a guy.
- 21:49Speaker 11: And now you've kind of, you've lost your third offensive tackle.
- 21:52Speaker 11: They just traded for a guy, even though they drafted
- 21:54Speaker 11: a guy in the first round, apparently he's not good
- 21:56Speaker 11: enough to kind of be part of that top three mix.
- 21:59Speaker 11: You know, like how much will, how much will AJ
- 22:02Speaker 11: Brown and Romeo Dobbs make that offense better? You know,
- 22:06Speaker 11: no Trevion Henderson, or sorry, there's a chance Trevion Henderson
- 22:09Speaker 11: doesn't play this week. But when I just look at
- 22:11Speaker 11: the roster, I just see a lot of holes, particularly
- 22:13Speaker 11: in the draft.
- 22:17Speaker 3: I'm going to get him back.
- 22:18Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Maybe a little lost connection.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Linden, Linden, Washington.
- 22:24Speaker 3: I'll get him back.
- 22:24Speaker 2: There's a lot of country in Linden, Washington. He's on,
- 22:26Speaker 2: I know he's traveling, so we'll get him back.
- 22:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 2: He told me that last week. And I remember after
- 22:31Speaker 2: we talked and he drove away and I was like,
- 22:33Speaker 2: wait a minute, I didn't really press him a little
- 22:34Speaker 2: more for details on why he thinks the Patriots are
- 22:36Speaker 2: going to face plant. So I'm about to ask Farhan.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Then this is probably okay.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Farhan.
- 22:43Speaker 2: So this is probably a blowout on Wednesday. The Seahawks win. No, it's, Oh,
- 22:47Speaker 2: he switched on trying to connect.
- 22:48Speaker 4: Okay.
- 22:50Speaker 3: We're just, yeah.
- 22:52Speaker 5: And believe you me, I'm the first person who wants
- 22:55Speaker 5: to hear about Patriots failure.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Spoken like a Long Islander, of course. A Jets fan,
- 23:01Speaker 2: of course. But yeah, Farhan was talking to me last
- 23:04Speaker 2: week about this and about how they are a paper
- 23:07Speaker 2: tiger in his mind with the schedule they had last year.
- 23:11Speaker 2: And you know how the NFL works. If you're a
- 23:13Speaker 2: last place team, you get a very favorable schedule the
- 23:16Speaker 2: following year. That's how parity is in the league. If
- 23:18Speaker 2: you get our first place team, you get a tough
- 23:20Speaker 2: schedule and the Seahawks have one of the tougher ones,
- 23:22Speaker 2: not to mention the Seahawks play in a tough, tough,
- 23:25Speaker 2: tougher division than the Patriots do. The Patriots, of course,
- 23:28Speaker 2: have the Jets and they have the Dolphins. Some people
- 23:30Speaker 2: think the Dolphins might only win one or two games
- 23:33Speaker 2: and will be in a race for the new franchise
- 23:35Speaker 2: quarterback of next year's draft. But yeah, it struck me
- 23:37Speaker 2: last week when I was talking to Farhan, I was like,
- 23:39Speaker 2: wait a minute, he's talking about the Patriots' Let's explore
- 23:42Speaker 2: that a little more. So where we left off, Farhan,
- 23:44Speaker 2: before we left you, was you talking about how the
- 23:46Speaker 2: Patriots really don't have anything in terms of depth.
- 23:50Speaker 7: So you think Wednesday night's going to be a walk
- 23:52Speaker 7: for the Seahawks?
- 23:54Speaker 11: Well, I don't see how the Seahawks lose this game
- 23:56Speaker 11: unless the Seahawks make a bunch of self-inflicted errors. When
- 23:59Speaker 11: I look at New England, I'm just trying to find
- 24:02Speaker 11: where their improvements are, right? And they want Drake May
- 24:05Speaker 11: to get to the next level. Obviously, A.J.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Brown's going to be there.
- 24:08Speaker 11: I'm getting Romeo Dobbs is going to help, but on
- 24:11Speaker 11: the defensive side, like this is a team that's going
- 24:13Speaker 11: to totally try to rely on their backend to allow
- 24:16Speaker 11: their front seven, to try to make some things happen.
- 24:19Speaker 11: So you look at how this team finished last year
- 24:22Speaker 11: and their blitz rate. went to like fifth. I think
- 24:25Speaker 11: they finished the season with the fifth highest blitz rate
- 24:27Speaker 11: in the league because they just couldn't get pressure with four.
- 24:29Speaker 11: And I don't know what improvements they've made and they've
- 24:31Speaker 11: got injuries there. So I like, when I look at their,
- 24:34Speaker 11: their trench play, I don't see the improvements and I
- 24:37Speaker 11: don't know that they've done enough to improve this roster.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Foreign allows you to TSN Canada, joining us in the
- 24:41Speaker 2: beacon plumbing hotline, talking NFL. He's going to be at
- 24:44Speaker 2: Lumen field with me Wednesday for the Seahawks Patriots NFL
- 24:46Speaker 2: kickoff game. Then he's going to be in Kansas city
- 24:48Speaker 2: for the Monday night game at Arrowhead stadium of Denver
- 24:52Speaker 2: at Kansas city. Staying in the AFC, the Browns quarterback situation,
- 24:57Speaker 2: I neglected to ask you that on the air last week,
- 24:59Speaker 2: but is this Deshaun Watson because they're paying him $ 200
- 25:03Speaker 2: million and they have to?
- 25:04Speaker 7: Or what do you think is going on here?
- 25:06Speaker 2: Is Shutter Sanders really going to be the starter this year? Eventually,
- 25:09Speaker 2: the optics of all this in Cleveland is just terrible.
- 25:14Speaker 11: It is, especially when you look at how the relationship
- 25:17Speaker 11: with Deshaun Watson and the fans has become, right? And,
- 25:19Speaker 11: you know, when he made those statements early on where
- 25:21Speaker 11: he was criticizing the fans for him and then talking
- 25:24Speaker 11: about the fact that he has no regrets in terms
- 25:25Speaker 11: of what he did, pretty tone-deaf comment.
- 25:28Speaker 2: He walked it back a little bit.
- 25:29Speaker 11: But I'm not convinced that they believe in Sanders, right?
- 25:34Speaker 11: I mean, if they really felt Sanders was the guy,
- 25:35Speaker 11: and quite frankly, if Sanders showed that he was the guy,
- 25:38Speaker 11: and maybe he showed he was a little better than Watson,
- 25:40Speaker 11: but he hasn't shown himself to be... you know, you
- 25:43Speaker 11: look at him in the preseason or whatever he's played
- 25:45Speaker 11: and say, yeah, yeah, this is the franchise guy. So
- 25:47Speaker 11: I think they're just still in a holding pattern. And
- 25:49Speaker 11: if they're trying to get value out of Deshaun Watson,
- 25:51Speaker 11: I guess they can, you know, next year they can
- 25:52Speaker 11: move them and it's not as onerous. So like, I,
- 25:56Speaker 11: I don't think they're comfortable with anything. And then there's
- 25:58Speaker 11: Dylan Gabriel just sitting in the midst.
- 25:59Speaker 2: Of all of that.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Right.
- 26:00Speaker 2: So it's a bizarre situation.
- 26:02Speaker 11: And I, I think they've, you know, they're trying not
- 26:05Speaker 11: to box them.
- 26:11Speaker 5: To be fair, Farhan is working on a story in
- 26:14Speaker 5: a place with very poor service. So, yeah, we'll see
- 26:19Speaker 5: if we can get him back. I'll work on that
- 26:21Speaker 5: right now.
- 26:22Speaker 2: I thought it was the Canadian tariff controversy going on here.
- 26:25Speaker 3: That's entirely possible. It's entirely possible.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Yeah, we got you halfway. We got you back.
- 26:36Speaker 3: And thus, he is gone once again. Anyway.
- 26:39Speaker 2: um i'm here now.
- 26:41Speaker 5: There we go i thought robert craft might have swooped
- 26:44Speaker 5: in on your phone there.
- 26:45Speaker 11: No guy like i saw some i'm dropping my son
- 26:47Speaker 11: off i dropped my son off at a prep school
- 26:49Speaker 11: and we were supposed to be gone and all of
- 26:51Speaker 11: a sudden my wife had this idea that look we
- 26:52Speaker 11: got to clean up get a bunch of stuff moved
- 26:54Speaker 11: in while he's still in class thought we weren't going
- 26:56Speaker 11: to do this till sunday so like and i think
- 26:58Speaker 11: at these schools they like to like cut off your
- 27:00Speaker 11: cell phone if you're a kid you don't want to
- 27:02Speaker 11: have a phone on during class time So I'm sitting
- 27:05Speaker 11: here on one bar around 90 degree temperatures trying to
- 27:08Speaker 11: find a clear spot so we can talk.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Yeah, Farhan's son.
- 27:12Speaker 3: We do appreciate your sacrifice.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Quarterback now in Virginia. All right, let's stay on quarterbacks.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Kirk Cousins named Clint Kubiak's starter in Las Vegas. Do
- 27:23Speaker 2: you think this is a whole season deal, Farhan? Do
- 27:25Speaker 2: you think Mendoza's going to be a starter? Obviously, eventually,
- 27:29Speaker 2: but this year?
- 27:34Speaker 3: And I think we, once again, are dealing with technical difficulties.
- 27:38Speaker 2: So if you missed it earlier this week, Clint Kubiak,
- 27:42Speaker 2: the new coach and former offensive coordinator for the Seahawks, naming,
- 27:46Speaker 2: it took him all preseason. Everyone in Las Vegas that
- 27:49Speaker 2: I talked to around the Raiders knew it was going
- 27:51Speaker 2: to be Kirk Cousins, but he waited until this week
- 27:53Speaker 2: to announce that. And Fernando Mendoza, of course, is the
- 27:56Speaker 2: number one overall pick, the national champion quarterback from Indiana.
- 28:00Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 28:01Speaker 2: The history in the NFL of quarterbacks, rookie quarterbacks, even
- 28:04Speaker 2: top number one picks, playing right away is not good.
- 28:08Speaker 2: John Elway and even before that, there's a reason why
- 28:11Speaker 2: you get picked first overall because the team you're going
- 28:13Speaker 2: to is terrible. So in that sense, why bring the
- 28:16Speaker 2: kid out and lose games right away to start his career?
- 28:20Speaker 2: And that's part of the reason that they got Kirk
- 28:21Speaker 2: Cousins in the first place from Atlanta after, of course,
- 28:25Speaker 2: the Falcons gave up on him with Michael Penix Jr.
- 28:29Speaker 4: Arriving.
- 28:30Speaker 2: But Suffice to say that I don't know if it's
- 28:34Speaker 2: a redshirt year, and Farhan, while you're joining us in
- 28:37Speaker 2: TSN Canada again, what I was trying to get to is, Farhan,
- 28:40Speaker 2: I don't think it's necessarily an entire redshirt year for Mendoza,
- 28:45Speaker 2: or do you see Kirk Cousins starting the entire season
- 28:47Speaker 2: in Las Vegas?
- 28:49Speaker 11: No, I think there's going to be a window here
- 28:51Speaker 11: where Mendoza plays. It could be a number of reasons
- 28:54Speaker 11: that takes him there. You know, Kirk Cousins has earned
- 28:57Speaker 11: the opportunity. He was better in the preseason. His body
- 28:59Speaker 11: of work is good. Unbelievable that he's starting on opening
- 29:02Speaker 11: day for a fourth different team. But when you look
- 29:05Speaker 11: at Mendoza, I think they want to ease him in.
- 29:07Speaker 11: I think Kirk Cousins, at some point given his age,
- 29:09Speaker 11: he could get hurt. When you consider that offensive line,
- 29:12Speaker 11: he could get hurt. When you consider those offensive pieces.
- 29:15Speaker 2: With the Raiders.
- 29:16Speaker 11: they could just struggle enough to the point where they say,
- 29:18Speaker 11: why not? Let's just get a head start on next
- 29:20Speaker 11: year with four or five games left in the season
- 29:22Speaker 11: and let Mendoza play at that point. So there's a
- 29:24Speaker 11: number of circumstances that could take them in that direction.
- 29:27Speaker 11: But I think it's only a matter of time before
- 29:29Speaker 11: Mendoza plays.
- 29:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with you there too. All right. The
- 29:32Speaker 2: big news here, of course, is Aaron Donald and the Rams.
- 29:34Speaker 2: And now the Rams already won the Super Bowl in
- 29:36Speaker 2: early September. But how much can we expect, Farhan, that
- 29:41Speaker 2: Donald plays? Are we talking like 20 snaps? Is he
- 29:44Speaker 2: a rotational guy? Is he going to just be a
- 29:47Speaker 2: pass rusher inside? And where do you think that evolution
- 29:51Speaker 2: will go from where Donald will be able to play?
- 29:53Speaker 7: I mean, I don't know if he's playing in Australia
- 29:55Speaker 7: next week.
- 29:56Speaker 2: To when the Seahawks play the Rams for the first
- 29:58Speaker 2: time on Christmas night, and do you think maybe by
- 30:00Speaker 2: then it could be the old Aaron Donald of 60-plus
- 30:04Speaker 2: snaps a game, or that's unrealistic?
- 30:07Speaker 11: No, I think it could be realistic at that time
- 30:09Speaker 11: of year. I think they'd be crazy to try to
- 30:11Speaker 11: do more than that with him now, and I think
- 30:12Speaker 11: that they won't try to do more than that with
- 30:14Speaker 11: him now. I think he's going to be a 20-snap-a-game
- 30:16Speaker 11: guy for the first two months of the.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Season, and they'll ramp that up.
- 30:20Speaker 11: But I think it really is going to come down
- 30:22Speaker 11: to performance, because if he shows by the end of
- 30:25Speaker 11: the first month, for example, that he can handle more
- 30:27Speaker 11: and that he's as impactful and that he's as disruptive,
- 30:30Speaker 11: they're going to just increase that because it's just too
- 30:32Speaker 11: valuable not to, right? And there may be some games
- 30:35Speaker 11: along the way where they just don't feel the need
- 30:36Speaker 11: to do that because the mismatch is so large. But
- 30:39Speaker 11: certainly I believe their goal is to get them to
- 30:42Speaker 11: be a 60 snap guy, 55 snap guy by the
- 30:45Speaker 11: time they get to Christmas day. And, you know, and
- 30:46Speaker 11: it's so funny when you, when you talk about these
- 30:48Speaker 11: two teams and, It's so difficult to handicap what it's
- 30:52Speaker 11: going to look like now because they're both going to
- 30:54Speaker 11: look so different at Christmas Day. There's just going to
- 30:57Speaker 11: be injuries along the way.
- 30:58Speaker 2: Who knows?
- 30:59Speaker 11: John Schneider and Sean McVay and Les Snead and their crew,
- 31:02Speaker 11: they're not going to let the grass grow under their feet.
- 31:04Speaker 2: They're going to.
- 31:05Speaker 11: be aggressively trying to improve their rosters when the time
- 31:08Speaker 11: comes like wouldn't shock me if all of a sudden
- 31:10Speaker 11: Seattle were to add a running back in the next
- 31:12Speaker 11: couple of days here wouldn't shock me you know well
- 31:14Speaker 11: like what they've done in the secondary in terms of
- 31:17Speaker 11: attempting to get better at corner hasn't surprised me because
- 31:20Speaker 11: that's just where they are in their competitive cycle they
- 31:22Speaker 11: want to get better today so you know you're to
- 31:25Speaker 11: me I think these two teams could look significantly different
- 31:27Speaker 11: in Christmas and Aaron Donald could be playing a lot
- 31:30Speaker 11: or he just could get banged up himself given his
- 31:32Speaker 11: age and maybe they tried to push him too much
- 31:33Speaker 11: early and he might not for those two games.
- 31:36Speaker 2: You mentioned that you see this as a two-team race
- 31:38Speaker 2: for how banged up the 49ers are and the problems
- 31:40Speaker 2: they have. Do you think, do you buy into what
- 31:43Speaker 2: everyone's saying, that the Rams are actually ahead of the Seahawks,
- 31:45Speaker 2: even though the Seahawks are the defending champs?
- 31:49Speaker 11: Well, when you look at the improvements that have been made, right,
- 31:52Speaker 11: I mean, when you finish the season last year for
- 31:54Speaker 11: the Rams, you need defense. They needed pass for a shelf,
- 32:00Speaker 11: and they addressed both of those in a big way.
- 32:02Speaker 11: I don't understand why people are calling this the super
- 32:04Speaker 11: team and making.
- 32:05Speaker 2: Them the favorites. They should. We got him just enough
- 32:13Speaker 2: to tick off the Seattle fan base. Which is so perfect.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Yes.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Go ahead. Now we got you.
- 32:20Speaker 11: Yeah, so when you look at who's improved more, the
- 32:25Speaker 11: Rams have improved more, and they've improved in the areas.
- 32:29Speaker 11: Against the Seahawks, right? You can take a Trent McDuffie
- 32:32Speaker 11: and move him inside and try to mitigate the damage
- 32:34Speaker 11: JSN can do to you, right? Like they've been really
- 32:36Speaker 11: targeted with where they wanted to improve. So yeah, I
- 32:39Speaker 11: get why, but I also think Seattle's continuity and culture
- 32:43Speaker 11: and all of those things are also going to be
- 32:45Speaker 11: a real factor, like just one year and the buy-in
- 32:50Speaker 11: that he's got from around that team, which, which hard
- 32:52Speaker 11: knocks has certainly shown it. I, I think both teams
- 32:55Speaker 11: have gotten better. I think on the field, it's hard.
- 33:04Speaker 3: All right, Farhan.
- 33:06Speaker 2: We appreciate you. I'll let you get back to being
- 33:08Speaker 2: a dad. Tell your wife I'm sorry. I'll let you
- 33:11Speaker 2: get back to moving duties in Virginia. And we'll talk
- 33:15Speaker 2: to you next week, man. Thanks a lot. Farhan Lalji
- 33:18Speaker 2: of TSN Canada. Maybe he was in Saskatchewan and was
- 33:21Speaker 2: not telling us. Up in the Yukon.
- 33:24Speaker 5: He made a valiant effort several times. And we do
- 33:28Speaker 5: appreciate that.
- 33:29Speaker 2: And we think.
- 33:30Speaker 7: Hey, he's being a dad. He's in the middle of something.
- 33:33Speaker 2: And taking his time. And his wife's going, you're doing what?
- 33:35Speaker 2: You're on a phone?
- 33:36Speaker 6: What?
- 33:37Speaker 2: No. Move this desk.
- 33:40Speaker 5: It does make sense that they would have a cell block,
- 33:43Speaker 5: a cell phone block, I mean, at a prep school, though.
- 33:47Speaker 5: I think that's what he was saying, is that they're
- 33:50Speaker 5: moving his son into a prep school and that the
- 33:53Speaker 5: service might not be great, but that's on purpose so
- 33:56Speaker 5: that they're not attached to their screens.
- 33:59Speaker 2: That's wild, too, isn't it? How about just make a
- 34:01Speaker 2: rule that you're not allowed to have your phones in
- 34:03Speaker 2: class and collect a phone?
- 34:04Speaker 3: It's a state rule.
- 34:05Speaker 5: So I bought my niece a burner because she's nine
- 34:08Speaker 5: years old, for instance. And, you know, she might want
- 34:13Speaker 5: to talk to auntie about some girl's stuff.
- 34:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:17Speaker 3: And I got a burner and it's a state law
- 34:20Speaker 3: in New York.
- 34:20Speaker 2: Yes.
- 34:22Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 34:23Speaker 3: I mean, I didn't have a phone when I went
- 34:25Speaker 3: to school.
- 34:26Speaker 15: Imagine that.
- 34:26Speaker 7: When you needed a ride, you had to go to
- 34:28Speaker 7: a pay phone.
- 34:28Speaker 3: We just showed up.
- 34:31Speaker 2: And if you had to wait, you had to wait.
- 34:32Speaker 5: Oh, I did the whole we out of baby, it's
- 34:35Speaker 5: a boy thing on a collect call.
- 34:39Speaker 3: My practice is done. Come pick me up.
- 34:41Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 34:41Speaker 9: Yes.
- 34:42Speaker 3: And don't accept the call.
- 34:44Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 34:44Speaker 5: Yes.
- 34:45Speaker 2: We did all that. People are right now going, what
- 34:47Speaker 2: are you talking about? Yeah, that used to.
- 34:49Speaker 10: Be a thing.
- 34:49Speaker 2: I hear you on the text line, 49451, time to
- 34:52Speaker 2: get up. This is terrible. This is gross. Come on, man.
- 34:54Speaker 3: We tried.
- 34:55Speaker 5: We gave it our best.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Come on, man. Let him be a dad. I've been there.
- 35:00Speaker 2: I've been there. I've been there with Chuck. I've been
- 35:02Speaker 2: there with Softie. I've been with Ian. I'm in the
- 35:04Speaker 2: middle of a soccer game. I'm in the middle of
- 35:06Speaker 2: a toll road in the middle of Ohio. Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 3: Pasadena. The worst. All the satellites for everything that happens
- 35:14Speaker 3: in L.A.
- 35:15Speaker 5: Are placed on a hill right outside the Rose Bowl.
- 35:18Speaker 3: And I made it work somehow. And so did Farhan.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Thanks to Farhan. Thanks to you for listening. He's got
- 35:27Speaker 2: great stuff, and that just happened to break up a
- 35:29Speaker 2: few times.
- 35:30Speaker 3: I did like him pooping on the Patriots.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Yes, and he also says that the Rams have, deservedly so,
- 35:36Speaker 2: are considered the favorites.
- 35:38Speaker 3: I'm not happy with that assessment.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Yes, he's joining the rest of the chorus of the
- 35:44Speaker 2: NFL media. Next, the new Seahawks cornerback. He will not
- 35:48Speaker 2: break up because I was standing right next to him
- 35:50Speaker 2: when he talked, so this will be a much more
- 35:53Speaker 2: dependable conversation, we believe. Avery Smith.
- 35:55Speaker 3: I have it.
- 35:57Speaker 4: It's fine.
- 35:58Speaker 2: We're good. 11 o'clock. Graham Kapowson and Lake Stevens are
- 36:01Speaker 2: hitting it tonight on the gridiron in the very first
- 36:04Speaker 2: week of high school football, a showdown of top four

- 36:13Speaker 2: Please no more comments about Farhan's self-reception.
- 36:15Speaker 4: I got it.

- 43:28Speaker 2: head coach Tom Try. They're both playing each other tonight
- 43:30Speaker 2: in a showdown of Class 4A powers. Three and four.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Ranked three and four. Playing each other week one. Hoquiam

- 43:44Speaker 2: meeting tonight at Olympic Stadium.
- 43:46Speaker 3: We got history here.
- 43:49Speaker 2: It's pretty cool. Olympic Stadium.
- 43:50Speaker 4: It is.
- 43:50Speaker 2: I love playing there. We scheduled two years in a
- 43:53Speaker 2: row to play baseball games down at Olympic Stadium, and
- 43:56Speaker 2: they play football there, too. And the football stadium is
- 43:58Speaker 2: in the outfield with the fence cutting around like the
- 44:01Speaker 2: 30-yard line. Really cool, old, wooden stadium. Legend has it
- 44:07Speaker 2: that Babe Ruth once played at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam. Legend.
- 44:10Speaker 2: That is legend.
- 44:11Speaker 12: Yes.
- 44:12Speaker 2: And legend has it. Avery Smith is the newest Seahawks cornerback.
- 44:17Speaker 2: He arrived here in a trade, a sixth-round pick to
- 44:20Speaker 2: the Chargers in next year's draft, and the Seahawks got
- 44:23Speaker 2: him returned an undrafted rookie free agent who's yet to
- 44:26Speaker 2: play an NFL regular season game or even being in
- 44:29Speaker 2: the NFL for a regular season week. This is Avery
- 44:32Speaker 2: Smith and why he was surprised that he got traded
- 44:35Speaker 2: after a stellar preseason for the Chargers.
- 44:37Speaker 26: What was that like for you getting the call and
- 44:39Speaker 26: finding out that you were.
- 44:40Speaker 10: Coming out this way getting traded?
- 44:42Speaker 4: Surprising, but.
- 44:45Speaker 27: Can't say I wasn't mad at anything. I was excited,
- 44:47Speaker 27: you know, to be a Seahawk. So, yeah, that's kind
- 44:50Speaker 27: of where I'm at right now.
- 44:52Speaker 4: What did you, you talked about the preseason you had.
- 44:54Speaker 4: How did you feel like the preseason was for you? Yeah, good.
- 44:57Speaker 27: I'm a hard critic on myself, so stuff I've seen
- 45:01Speaker 27: I could have did better, but I feel like I
- 45:02Speaker 27: made some plays, so just trying to build on that.
- 45:05Speaker 4: What was it.
- 45:06Speaker 2: About Toledo and the Seahawks and the corners and safeties here?
- 45:11Speaker 27: Yeah, I made a joke today, call it the Toledo Seahawks. But,
- 45:14Speaker 27: I mean, Toledo, we got good DBs and good players,
- 45:16Speaker 27: so just kind of get in the league and do that.
- 45:19Speaker 6: Was it a kind of reunion to see some of
- 45:21Speaker 6: those guys here?
- 45:22Speaker 10: Yeah, it was great to see Dre and Maxson.
- 45:24Speaker 4: What do you say, too, about this opportunity here?
- 45:26Speaker 6: Obviously, this group is dealing with injuries and safety.
- 45:29Speaker 27: Yeah, just winning culture, you know, winning the Super Bowl
- 45:33Speaker 27: last year. I wasn't here for that, so trying to
- 45:36Speaker 27: repeat and do that this year. But just the culture,
- 45:38Speaker 27: the energy, the defense, of course, aggressively. So just coming
- 45:42Speaker 27: in and trying to help whichever way I can.
- 45:44Speaker 26: Did you see Seahawks scouts on campus in Toledo or
- 45:47Speaker 26: it was all pre-draft stuff?
- 45:50Speaker 10: I'm not sure. I really don't remember, yeah.
- 45:53Speaker 26: How much inside-outside have you played the Knicks?
- 45:56Speaker 10: I played pretty much in college.
- 45:58Speaker 27: I played pretty much all outside. And preseason, I was
- 46:01Speaker 27: like probably 75% Knicks, so I could play both.
- 46:04Speaker 26: Did the Seahawks tell you anything specific about where they
- 46:06Speaker 26: want to use you?
- 46:08Speaker 2: Just.
- 46:08Speaker 10: Really learning the playbook is where I'm at right now.
- 46:10Speaker 26: Not knowing it's an easy playbook.
- 46:13Speaker 2: How do you feel like you're doing just getting caught
- 46:14Speaker 2: up in this defense?
- 46:15Speaker 10: Yeah, pretty good. I feel like I'm doing good.
- 46:18Speaker 4: You said you were surprised.
- 46:22Speaker 26: Were you surprised that you weren't on the Chargers roster?
- 46:25Speaker 26: Surprised it was the Seahawks?
- 46:26Speaker 18: What was surprising?
- 46:27Speaker 27: Yeah, I just, I mean, I follow football and I
- 46:29Speaker 27: haven't really heard of an undrafted free agent getting traded
- 46:32Speaker 27: before the regular season.
- 46:33Speaker 10: So that is what surprised me.
- 46:36Speaker 26: I mean, is that another team that wanted to go
- 46:38Speaker 26: out and get you and trade a pick for you?
- 46:39Speaker 2: Did that tell you something?
- 46:40Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 46:40Speaker 27: Awesome tells me, like, how much they wanted me, and
- 46:43Speaker 27: they seen something, so just trying to come here and produce.
- 46:46Speaker 26: Did they talk to you pre-draft at all?
- 46:49Speaker 10: I'm not sure. I really don't remember.
- 46:51Speaker 27: I'm pretty sure I've had a couple meetings with area
- 46:53Speaker 27: scouts and stuff like that, but nothing off the top
- 46:55Speaker 27: of my head.
- 46:56Speaker 26: Were you expecting to get drafted, or were you surprised
- 46:58Speaker 26: you didn't?
- 46:59Speaker 10: Yeah, I was surprised.
- 47:02Speaker 2: Avery Smith, a new cornerback, and you heard him say it.
- 47:05Speaker 2: I follow football, and I've never heard of an undrafted
- 47:08Speaker 2: rookie free agent getting traded for before his first regular
- 47:12Speaker 2: season week in the league.
- 47:13Speaker 5: In Mike McDonald, we trust these days.
- 47:17Speaker 2: They scouted him at Toledo. You heard him say Maxson
- 47:20Speaker 2: and Andre Fuller, a cornerback. Rookie cornerback drafted out of
- 47:26Speaker 2: Toledo by the Seahawks, and Maxson Hook is a second-year
- 47:29Speaker 2: free agent from Toledo at safety. Both of them are
- 47:32Speaker 2: on the practice squad. Avery Smith's on the 53-man roster.
- 47:35Speaker 2: They traded for him. He'll get a chance, too, at
- 47:37Speaker 2: third corner. Now, you heard him say he was a
- 47:39Speaker 2: college outside cornerback, and that's where I think the Seahawks
- 47:42Speaker 2: have him envisioned so they can move Witherspoon inside. In
- 47:45Speaker 2: the meantime, they're trying to get Trevon Diggs spun up.
- 47:48Speaker 2: On the practice squad, not no. I don't know if
- 47:50Speaker 2: he's going to be able to play Wednesday. I'm sort
- 47:52Speaker 2: of doubting that or else they probably kept him on
- 47:54Speaker 2: the 53 if they thought that. So he's on the
- 47:57Speaker 2: practice squad. And there's a text line question. Avery Smith
- 48:02Speaker 2: was not a free agent. He was on the 90-man
- 48:06Speaker 2: roster for the Chargers. They were about to waive him
- 48:08Speaker 2: and ask him to go to the practice squad. But
- 48:11Speaker 2: instead of doing that, the Seahawks basically, because they were
- 48:14Speaker 2: 32nd in the waiver wire because they won the Super
- 48:16Speaker 2: Bowl last year, they had the last pick. Everyone else
- 48:19Speaker 2: had a chance to claim Avery Smith. So they jumped
- 48:21Speaker 2: the line by trading for him. That's what they did.
- 48:24Speaker 2: That's what Snyder, instead of losing him to waivers to
- 48:26Speaker 2: some other team, if the Chargers tried to put him
- 48:28Speaker 2: on the practice squad, the Seahawks traded for him. And
- 48:31Speaker 2: that's how much they wanted him, and they didn't want
- 48:33Speaker 2: to lose him to another team on waivers. So that
- 48:35Speaker 2: explains why they ended up trading rather than trying to
- 48:38Speaker 2: put a waiver claim in on him if he tried
- 48:40Speaker 2: to go to the practice squad. Up next, our debut
- 48:43Speaker 2: of our High School Football Friday weekly feature, the game
- 48:46Speaker 2: of the week this week, the best game in the state,
- 48:49Speaker 2: number three against number four in Class 3A. Graham Kapowson
- 48:53Speaker 2: is heading up tonight to Lake Stevens. We'll talk next
- 48:55Speaker 2: to Graham Kapowson head coach Jeff Logan, and right after him,
- 48:59Speaker 2: we're going to talk to Lake Stevens head coach Tom
- 49:01Speaker 2: Try on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 49:16Speaker 7: Now, from the Star Rentals Sports Desk, your 93.3 KGB.
- 49:20Speaker 4: FM Sports Headlines.
- 49:22Speaker 2: Good morning, happy Friday, happy Labor Day weekend, happy High
- 49:25Speaker 2: School Football Feature Friday. We'll get to that in a
- 49:27Speaker 2: second after headlines brought to you by Frostbude, Coors Light,
- 49:29Speaker 2: cold as the Rockies, the Mariners.
- 49:34Speaker 7: We can all exhale.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Struck out 18 times. Well, maybe not.
- 49:38Speaker 7: Better than crying.
- 49:39Speaker 2: Struck out 18 times against the Lily A's last night
- 49:43Speaker 2: and lost 7-4. Nine games under.
- 49:46Speaker 4: 500.
- 49:46Speaker 2: Six games out of first place. 21 games remain. Game
- 49:49Speaker 2: two of the four-game series against the Athletics tonight. Logan
- 49:52Speaker 2: Gilbert starts on the mound. Fireworks sing-along night. George Kirby
- 49:54Speaker 2: tomorrow night on Brian Wu bobblehead night before Brian Wu
- 49:57Speaker 2: starts on Sunday. So there'll be 45,000 in the yard
- 50:01Speaker 2: and the owners are all cool. It's all good.
- 50:03Speaker 3: Hey, I have fun there, Greg.
- 50:05Speaker 2: I know you do.
- 50:06Speaker 3: I attend a lot of games.
- 50:08Speaker 2: You're not alone. You and 43,000 of your friends are.
- 50:10Speaker 3: Oh my God, I have so many friends.
- 50:12Speaker 2: The Seahawks return to practice after a three-day break. Five
- 50:15Speaker 2: days until the NFL opener against New England at Lumen Field.
- 50:17Speaker 2: Nicky Manwari practiced, though in the short time I was
- 50:20Speaker 2: able to watch, he was stretching and warming up mostly
- 50:22Speaker 2: separate from his teammates. I think it's iffy that he
- 50:24Speaker 2: plays on Wednesday. We'll see. The first injury report practice
- 50:28Speaker 2: participation report of the season will come out tomorrow because
- 50:31Speaker 2: they practice Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Off Tuesday, game Wednesday.
- 50:34Speaker 2: Sweeping changes to the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection
- 50:37Speaker 2: process in the wake of the fiasco last year of
- 50:39Speaker 2: Bill Belichick and Mike Holmgren failing to get voted in.
- 50:42Speaker 2: No more senior category. Board of selectors will be reduced
- 50:45Speaker 2: from 50 to 28. There will be no longer a
- 50:50Speaker 2: selector from each of the home markets of the 32
- 50:52Speaker 2: NFL teams. Instead, one person who's not on the committee
- 50:55Speaker 2: will present all the candidates We'll see if this right's
- 50:58Speaker 2: the wrong of Coach Holmgren.
- 51:00Speaker 3: Get him in!
- 51:02Speaker 7: Get in there.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Finally. Criticized WNBA Commissioner Kathy Engbert is stepping down after
- 51:08Speaker 2: the end of this league season. She's been called negligent
- 51:11Speaker 2: by some stars in the league. She's done after this year.
- 51:15Speaker 2: Sounders tomorrow hosted New York Red Bulls. 5.30 p.m. at
- 51:18Speaker 2: Lumen Field. 5 o'clock pregame with Jackson Feltz in a pregame.
- 51:21Speaker 2: Leads right into our broadcast.
- 51:23Speaker 3: Do you think he'll be genuine Jackson or furious Phelps?
- 51:26Speaker 2: I think he's still furious Phelps.
- 51:28Speaker 3: I like that.
- 51:29Speaker 2: They're winless in nine MLS matches. They had an eight-game
- 51:33Speaker 2: losing streak and then a tie.
- 51:34Speaker 3: They're not having a good run. Anyways.
- 51:47Speaker 2: I go south to Graham Kapowson High School, one of
- 51:49Speaker 2: the state powers in Class 4A football. Coach Jeff Logan,
- 51:53Speaker 2: kind enough to take time out of a game day
- 51:56Speaker 2: to join us here on 93.3 KJRFM. Coach Logan, I
- 52:01Speaker 2: was a high school baseball coach, and scheduling was always
- 52:03Speaker 2: a challenge for me of how much early in the
- 52:05Speaker 2: season I wanted my guys to face. The pros and cons,
- 52:10Speaker 2: the pluses and minuses of having a state semifinal rematch
- 52:14Speaker 2: against Lake Stevens week one for your guys.
- 52:16Speaker 13: Yeah, I think obviously the pros of it are you
- 52:18Speaker 13: get to– the proof's been in the pudding a little
- 52:20Speaker 13: bit in the last couple years with some of the
- 52:22Speaker 13: teams that have had a lot of success at the
- 52:24Speaker 13: state level and ultimately won them with Sumner going back-to-back
- 52:27Speaker 13: and a Lake Stevens a couple years ago, and they
- 52:29Speaker 13: won it. They went down and played West Lynn. I
- 52:31Speaker 13: think there's something to be said to really test yourself,
- 52:35Speaker 13: not only for the good to kind of see and
- 52:37Speaker 13: really confirm do you think where your team is at,
- 52:40Speaker 13: but to also kind of find some places where you
- 52:42Speaker 13: need to improve and continue to work on it. It's
- 52:44Speaker 13: eye-opening for the kids as well. When they get to
- 52:46Speaker 13: play good competition, they get to kind of match up
- 52:49Speaker 13: and see exactly where they fit and where they see and,
- 52:51Speaker 13: you know, where we need to work on some deficiencies.
- 52:54Speaker 13: The cons of it obviously is, you know, like one
- 52:57Speaker 13: of the things we're doing this year is we're going
- 52:59Speaker 13: up to Lake Stevens week one. Week two, we're going
- 53:02Speaker 13: all the way over to the Tri-Cities to play Richland.
- 53:04Speaker 13: And then week three, we're going down to play Central
- 53:06Speaker 13: Catholic south of Portland. So we're we've got a bit
- 53:08Speaker 13: of travel next year. It'll be nice because we're hosting
- 53:11Speaker 13: them all, but you're also looking at you haven't had
- 53:15Speaker 13: the ability to create a season's worth of depth and
- 53:18Speaker 13: experience and really no different than most of the teams
- 53:21Speaker 13: around the area in the state. Now it's, these freshmen
- 53:24Speaker 13: and sophomores are ready to play football at a varsity
- 53:27Speaker 13: level a lot earlier than they usually were. And so
- 53:29Speaker 13: they don't have those, you know, eight to 12 weeks
- 53:31Speaker 13: under their belt. Like when we play Lake Stevens last year,
- 53:34Speaker 13: week 13, Keanu Corpus is a 13 week starter for us.
- 53:38Speaker 13: And so he.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Has that under his belt.
- 53:40Speaker 13: So now some of these young guys coming in, you know,
- 53:42Speaker 13: they don't get that experience or that season's worth of
- 53:45Speaker 13: practice and kind of get into the flow of things.
- 53:47Speaker 13: So Definitely a lot of good, and there's some things
- 53:50Speaker 13: that you kind of, I guess, would be the cons
- 53:52Speaker 13: of it. But ultimately, it's what our kids want. They
- 53:55Speaker 13: want to play good competition, and Lake Stevens is cream
- 53:58Speaker 13: of the crop.
- 54:00Speaker 2: Coach, how much does the state RPI system and the
- 54:02Speaker 2: way they seed and choose playoff teams really encourage you guys,
- 54:07Speaker 2: programs like this, to go find the best games?
- 54:11Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 54:12Speaker 13: I see, I mean, I, I see the RPI stuff
- 54:14Speaker 13: all the time and I, I truth, I'm not on
- 54:16Speaker 13: the seating committee, so I don't really know how much
- 54:18Speaker 13: that goes in and takes an effect into, um, you know, the,
- 54:22Speaker 13: the people that are on that committee and what they
- 54:23Speaker 13: value it as. But I think that in my opinion,
- 54:28Speaker 13: a close loss against a really, really good team is
- 54:31Speaker 13: going to speak more value to what your team is, um,
- 54:34Speaker 13: and how good they really are, as opposed to trying
- 54:36Speaker 13: to find some games that may not be extremely competitive. And, um,
- 54:41Speaker 13: The people that are on those committees, they're coaches, they're
- 54:43Speaker 13: athletic directors, and so they've seen the historic success of
- 54:47Speaker 13: teams like Lake Stevens and Richland. And so those are
- 54:49Speaker 13: kind of some of the key sticking points that we
- 54:51Speaker 13: wanted to look at in selecting some non-conference games, not
- 54:55Speaker 13: only to challenge ourselves, but to ultimately prove that, hey,
- 55:00Speaker 13: we're right there at the top with everybody else, that
- 55:02Speaker 13: that's where we really think we are.
- 55:04Speaker 2: This is Jeff Logan, the head coach of Graham Kapowsin
- 55:06Speaker 2: High School, who's heading tonight. up to Lake Stevens in
- 55:08Speaker 2: a showdown, three versus four in Class 4A to kick
- 55:11Speaker 2: off the Washington State high school football season. Coach, you
- 55:14Speaker 2: mentioned how players, freshman, sophomores now, are varsity ready in
- 55:18Speaker 2: the training they get offseason and around the clock training.
- 55:21Speaker 2: And you have a quarterback, A.J. Tuoviavi, who has, if
- 55:25Speaker 2: I'm not mistaken, started games as a freshman in your program.
- 55:29Speaker 2: What is a three-year quarterback starter? What does that allow
- 55:32Speaker 2: you to do offensively, leadership-wise in the locker room, just
- 55:35Speaker 2: the advantage of that?
- 55:38Speaker 13: Yeah, and he did. He started as a 14-year-old kid
- 55:43Speaker 13: over against O'Day at the Seattle Memorial Stadium week one.
- 55:47Speaker 13: We lost a heartbreaker in that one. But the growth
- 55:49Speaker 13: and maturity and really just kind of the way that
- 55:52Speaker 13: AJ's been able to corral and be pretty charismatic with
- 55:56Speaker 13: our kids. So offensively speaking, from a quarterback standpoint, scheme wise,
- 56:01Speaker 13: we're able to kind of get in and out of
- 56:03Speaker 13: some of the schemes that we think fit AJ really well.
- 56:05Speaker 13: We think he pushes the ball down the field really well.
- 56:08Speaker 13: He's got a ton of arm talent. He's got a very,
- 56:10Speaker 13: very accurate, a lot of arm strength. And so it
- 56:14Speaker 13: allows us to get to some of those deeper level
- 56:15Speaker 13: concepts and then really kind of mix it up. We
- 56:17Speaker 13: can switch release some different things. We can motion in
- 56:19Speaker 13: and out of things. And so it's not kind of
- 56:22Speaker 13: line up and play. It's allow him to create mismatches
- 56:26Speaker 13: and our receivers to create some mismatches with motion and
- 56:30Speaker 13: different alignments. And so that part of it has allowed
- 56:33Speaker 13: us to elaborate off of what we would consider kind
- 56:36Speaker 13: of our base scheme. And then you've got some receivers, too,
- 56:40Speaker 13: that have been around him for a long time. So really,
- 56:41Speaker 13: it's allowed us to become more multiple without having to overcomplicate.
- 56:46Speaker 3: The things we do.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Case Betts, one of those receivers, a senior receiver for
- 56:50Speaker 2: Graham Kapowson High School. Jeff, if I could ask you
- 56:53Speaker 2: a big, I'm sorry on a game day to do this,
- 56:55Speaker 2: but a big 30,000-foot, big-picture view of The college football
- 57:01Speaker 2: recruiting and now NIL and transfer portal and guys coming
- 57:05Speaker 2: back for 50 NFL players for heaven's sakes are coming
- 57:07Speaker 2: back to the colleges. What messaging now do you give
- 57:11Speaker 2: kids like AJ or case or guys who want to
- 57:14Speaker 2: play and have aspiration and can play college football yet?
- 57:18Speaker 2: Some doors slam on these kids because guys transfer port
- 57:22Speaker 2: college coaches would rather play guys who are 22, 23
- 57:24Speaker 2: years old with experience in college. rather than play high
- 57:27Speaker 2: school senior recruits. Is that changed?
- 57:30Speaker 7: Is that dynamic changed? Or does the cream eventually rise
- 57:33Speaker 7: to the top?
- 57:33Speaker 13: I think the cream will always rise to the top.
- 57:37Speaker 13: I've probably got a bit of a different point of
- 57:39Speaker 13: view of it, just because I've only kind of been
- 57:42Speaker 13: the point of our recruiting at GK for five years.
- 57:46Speaker 13: I think ultimately what it's done is it's created some
- 57:48Speaker 13: conversation amongst not only myself, but our players and their families.
- 57:52Speaker 4: It's finding.
- 57:53Speaker 13: it used to be like, find a good fit for you.
- 57:55Speaker 13: Where can you develop? And I think that that's still
- 57:58Speaker 13: extremely important, but with the new five for five rule,
- 58:02Speaker 13: you know, going into a school with the intent to
- 58:05Speaker 13: red shirt and develop, you're kind of, you, you, it's
- 58:08Speaker 13: almost like you fall behind the curve a little bit.
- 58:10Speaker 13: And so what I've kind of talked to our kids
- 58:12Speaker 13: is like, yes, you want to find a place that
- 58:14Speaker 13: you feel home. You feel extremely comfortable. The coaching staff
- 58:17Speaker 13: wants to continue and care about your development as a player,
- 58:20Speaker 13: but find somewhere that you're going to be successful. And, and,
- 58:23Speaker 13: it might not necessarily be just shooting for the top star.
- 58:27Speaker 13: If you've got an ability to play and get some
- 58:29Speaker 13: meaningful reps and playing time and compete for a starting
- 58:32Speaker 13: spot right away, even if that is at an SCS
- 58:35Speaker 13: or a Division II or an NAIA or DIII level,
- 58:37Speaker 13: those are conversations we have now, I think, more than
- 58:40Speaker 13: we've ever had with kids in the past. Because you
- 58:43Speaker 13: don't have the luxury, like you said, with NFL guys
- 58:46Speaker 13: coming out of training camp and going back to college
- 58:49Speaker 13: and fourth and fifth. I think the sixth year seniors
- 58:52Speaker 13: are about weeded out, but those guys are coming in
- 58:55Speaker 13: and taking what would have been a redshirt sophomore's place
- 58:57Speaker 13: because they're experienced. Like you said, they're 23, they're 24,
- 59:00Speaker 13: they're not 20 years old. They've proven to be able
- 59:03Speaker 13: to do it. And so a lot of it is
- 59:05Speaker 13: you know, finding a good fit, finding somewhere that you
- 59:07Speaker 13: can find success early as an athlete that feels like home.
- 59:11Speaker 13: And then, you know, if you truly do have aspirations
- 59:14Speaker 13: to do bigger things and that's kind of, you know,
- 59:16Speaker 13: you feel like you've got that theoretical chip on your shoulder,
- 59:19Speaker 13: then that's always an option for you down the road.
- 59:21Speaker 13: But let's get our feet wet and find success early
- 59:24Speaker 13: with a really good fit at a good program.
- 59:27Speaker 2: Coach Jeff Logan, thank you. Thank you for what you
- 59:30Speaker 2: do in serving our youth in sports and giving them
- 59:33Speaker 2: a great opportunity as young men into college. And thanks
- 59:35Speaker 2: for taking the time out on a big, big game
- 59:37Speaker 2: day to join us. Best of luck tonight and all
- 59:40Speaker 2: the rest of the season.
- 59:42Speaker 4: Yeah, thank you too, Greg.
- 59:43Speaker 13: I want to make sure to always say thanks to
- 59:44Speaker 13: you guys because without you guys and coverage of high
- 59:46Speaker 13: school sports, it would just be the parents. And, you know,
- 59:49Speaker 13: I think it's really important for these kids to see.
- 59:51Speaker 4: Their names and see the coverage.
- 59:53Speaker 13: And you guys do a really good job of that.
- 59:54Speaker 4: So I want to make sure to say thank you to.
- 59:55Speaker 2: You guys as well. Appreciate that, Jeff. Now we go
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: to the opposite sideline. Lake Stevens State Championship winning coach
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Tom Try. He's kind enough to join us on a
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: game day, too, from Lake Stevens High School, the site
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: of tonight's showdown with Graham Kapowsin High School, a rematch
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: of the 4A state semifinal game from last winter. Coach,
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: thanks for joining us on a game day. And I'm
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: going to ask you the same question that I asked
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Coach Jeff Logan at GK. The pros and cons of
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: scheduling a game like this against the top four team
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: in the state, a state semifinal rematch week one, And
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: not only that, but you're also playing Bothell next week
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: and Puyallup in week three.
- 1:00:36Speaker 7: The pros and cons of scheduling that soon?
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: Yeah, well, I appreciate the question. I would start with
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: the pros. I think it does a great.
- 1:00:46Speaker 8: Job of allowing us as a team and a program
- 1:00:49Speaker 8: to find out what our strengths and weaknesses are so
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: that we can work on those weaknesses and or strengths
- 1:00:56Speaker 8: for the rest of the season before the playoffs start.
- 1:00:59Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:01:00Speaker 8: You find out you get real game experience with some
- 1:01:04Speaker 8: of your younger guys. Your veterans have to step up
- 1:01:06Speaker 8: and be great leaders. Like I said, you're playing the
- 1:01:09Speaker 8: best of the best with Graham Kapowson and Bothell Week
- 1:01:12Speaker 8: 2 and Puyallup, who I think is ranked number one
- 1:01:15Speaker 8: in the state right now.
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: Week 3.
- 1:01:17Speaker 8: So the pros are just– it's an early test, and
- 1:01:21Speaker 8: you find out, hey, what do we need to work
- 1:01:23Speaker 8: on to get better so that if and when we
- 1:01:25Speaker 8: see these types of teams again in Week 12, 13,
- 1:01:27Speaker 8: and 14– We've been there. We've had that game type experience.
- 1:01:32Speaker 8: We've seen the adversity and we adjust, adapt and try
- 1:01:35Speaker 8: to get better. I think the cons, you know, do
- 1:01:39Speaker 8: you get banged up playing those good teams?
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:01:41Speaker 8: But right before you start playing your conference schedule, because
- 1:01:45Speaker 8: those teams are physical and football is a violent game.
- 1:01:48Speaker 8: And so you want to make sure you're protecting your
- 1:01:50Speaker 8: kids and trying to build and instill confidence in your guys.
- 1:01:55Speaker 8: And that can be tough if you're struggling and you
- 1:01:58Speaker 8: lose some of those games. That being said, I still
- 1:02:00Speaker 8: think the benefits outweigh the negatives.
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: Coach, how much does the state's RPI system for playoff
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: selection and playoff seeding play into how you schedule, or
- 1:02:11Speaker 2: is that a secondary concern for you?
- 1:02:15Speaker 8: Quite honestly, I don't even look at the RPI, where
- 1:02:20Speaker 8: we're rated or where anybody.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: Else is rated.
- 1:02:23Speaker 8: I'd much prefer to watch... film on our opponents, listen
- 1:02:28Speaker 8: to other coaches from around the state who talk about
- 1:02:31Speaker 8: seeing these teams at team camps and spring camps and
- 1:02:35Speaker 8: the seven-on-sevens and the five-on-fives and things like that. And
- 1:02:38Speaker 8: I think that gives you a pretty realistic perspective. Like,
- 1:02:41Speaker 8: I know GK is one of the best teams in
- 1:02:43Speaker 8: the state. I don't have to look at the RPI
- 1:02:46Speaker 8: to say, oh, yeah, we're playing, whether they're two or
- 1:02:49Speaker 8: three or whatever they might be. Same with Puyallup, same
- 1:02:52Speaker 8: with Bothell. You know, we see each other at coaches clinics.
- 1:02:56Speaker 8: Quite honestly, that's where a lot of these games get
- 1:02:59Speaker 8: scheduled anymore. You know, we see whether it's at the
- 1:03:02Speaker 8: Washington coaches clinic or the Glacier clinic, wherever it might be.
- 1:03:05Speaker 8: And we start, hey, you guys want to play each
- 1:03:07Speaker 8: other in this next two year cycle? I think that's
- 1:03:09Speaker 8: how we picked up at least two or three of
- 1:03:12Speaker 8: our non-league games this year was just talking with other
- 1:03:15Speaker 8: coaches and finding out who some of the best teams
- 1:03:18Speaker 8: are and going out and trying to schedule games with
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: those teams.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: I hate to bring it up again, but overtime loss
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: in the state championship game at Husky Stadium last December
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: to Sumner, which you've won it a couple times as well.
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: How much, for the seniors especially, how much did that
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: loss shape everything you did in the offseason, the training,
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: the weight training, the conditioning?
- 1:03:39Speaker 7: What kind of a motivator was that?
- 1:03:43Speaker 8: Yeah, it's still a sour taste in the mouth. The
- 1:03:46Speaker 8: way we lost that game gives Summer all the credit.
- 1:03:49Speaker 8: They made one more play than we did in overtime
- 1:03:51Speaker 8: and found a way to get us. But it certainly
- 1:03:54Speaker 8: made our team and our program hungry, right? Our kids
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: have worked really hard in the offseason all the way
- 1:04:00Speaker 8: from January on up through August in the weight room
- 1:04:04Speaker 8: and speed agility sessions. you know, our motto this year
- 1:04:07Speaker 8: is unfinished business, right? We want to go find a
- 1:04:09Speaker 8: way to get back and go win that state championship.
- 1:04:12Speaker 8: And we felt like we were just a couple of
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: plays short last year in Sumner.
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: And even though we found a way to beat them
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: week one.
- 1:04:18Speaker 8: At our place, they came back and got us when
- 1:04:20Speaker 8: it counted most in the state championship. And in some ways,
- 1:04:23Speaker 8: I guess that it does make me more hungry. It
- 1:04:26Speaker 8: makes our kids more hungry. We want to be just
- 1:04:30Speaker 8: excited to continue to get better and find ways to
- 1:04:33Speaker 8: improve so that that doesn't happen to us again.
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: You have a senior quarterback, Blake Moser, coach. It has
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: to be an asset to have a senior quarterback in
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: an unfinished business-type season. Tell us a little bit about him.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: I understand he's committed to Iowa State, but a wide
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: receiver athlete commit, even though he plays quarterback for you,
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: which speaks to his athleticism. And was it the Washington
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: State previous coaching staff that got on him before they
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: went to Iowa State that's got him in Iowa State?
- 1:05:00Speaker 7: Or how did he get interested there?
- 1:05:03Speaker 4: Yeah, a lot of questions there. Yes, it was.
- 1:05:07Speaker 8: Starting with Blake and his character, I just have been
- 1:05:10Speaker 8: so incredibly impressed by just his leadership abilities. He's a
- 1:05:16Speaker 8: field general for us as a quarterback. His feet, his
- 1:05:21Speaker 8: arm strength, his accuracy, his quick knowledge of being able
- 1:05:27Speaker 8: to diagnose coverages and blitz packages that Other teams are
- 1:05:31Speaker 8: trying to present to us. We've had a lot of
- 1:05:34Speaker 8: really good quarterbacks like Stevens and Blake Grates right up
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: there with all of them.
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: He can be with his feet. He can be with
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: his arm.
- 1:05:42Speaker 8: That being said, he's now going to go play college
- 1:05:45Speaker 8: football as a wide receiver slot athlete type kid, right?
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: Which just shows you that he's not afraid to take risks.
- 1:05:57Speaker 8: I mean, he had several offers, big sky type offers,
- 1:06:01Speaker 8: even maybe a Pac-12 type offers as quarterback. And yet
- 1:06:06Speaker 8: he chose to go to Iowa State this summer and
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: worked out for them at one of their camps and
- 1:06:13Speaker 8: impressed the coaches over there so much that they recruited
- 1:06:17Speaker 8: him as a wide receiver. And yes, we did have
- 1:06:20Speaker 8: a connection to the Washington State coaches, a couple of
- 1:06:23Speaker 8: them before they took off for Iowa State.
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: So that did help with that process.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: Coach, the magnitude of this game this early, do you
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: talk to the kids about the state playoffs last year
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: and the semifinal win over GK? Does it speak for
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: itself from a coaching standpoint? How do you address the
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: opponent and the magnitude of a game week one like this?
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: Yeah, well, another great question.
- 1:06:52Speaker 8: I think for us, we talk about it's not about them,
- 1:06:56Speaker 8: it's about us, meaning we need to focus on what
- 1:06:58Speaker 8: we control. We don't know what plays Graham Kapowski are
- 1:07:02Speaker 8: going to run on offense or defense or what scheme
- 1:07:04Speaker 8: they're going to bring, but we know what we're going
- 1:07:06Speaker 8: to do. So if we can execute in practice at
- 1:07:10Speaker 8: a high level and then transform that into game-type atmosphere,
- 1:07:17Speaker 8: especially against a team like Graham Kapowski, that's going to
- 1:07:19Speaker 8: give us an opportunity to be successful. And so, you know,
- 1:07:24Speaker 8: we don't have to stress it in practice. The kids
- 1:07:26Speaker 8: already know that GK is one of the best teams
- 1:07:28Speaker 8: in the state, and they know that they're hungry because
- 1:07:31Speaker 8: we found a way to beat them in the semifinals
- 1:07:32Speaker 8: last year, right? So they know that it's a big game,
- 1:07:36Speaker 8: and we've kind of created a rivalry with Graham just
- 1:07:39Speaker 8: because we've played them so many times the past five, six,
- 1:07:42Speaker 8: seven years. So we know them really well. They know
- 1:07:45Speaker 8: us really well. It's really going to come down to
- 1:07:48Speaker 8: which team executes the best tonight.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: Coach, Tom Tribe, Lake Stevens High School, talking to us
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: from Lake Stevens High School where he's a teacher as well.
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: I just want to say thank you on behalf of
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: all of us in the Pacific Northwest and the Puget
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Sound community for what you do. I know the work
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: that goes into that. I know the time and then
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: being a teacher on top of it. Thank you for
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: serving our young men and women, giving them a chance
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: to graduate beyond high school and become young adults. And
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: thanks for everything you do and good luck on the
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: season and tonight. Thank you, sir.
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 1:08:17Speaker 8: I appreciate that. And I'm going to say thank you
- 1:08:19Speaker 8: to you as well. Thank you for helping to cover
- 1:08:21Speaker 8: high school sports. Our kids work so hard in the offseason,
- 1:08:25Speaker 8: and it's great to have an avenue for them to
- 1:08:30Speaker 8: be recognized, whether it's on TV or on radio or
- 1:08:33Speaker 8: just any type of media. I think our kids have
- 1:08:36Speaker 8: earned that, and I just appreciate that you guys do
- 1:08:39Speaker 8: that for the high school kids in the state of Washington.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: Thank you, sir. Coach Tom Chai, Lake Stevens. a legend
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: up there already won a couple of state championships and
- 1:08:48Speaker 2: trying to get it back for unfinished business this year,
- 1:08:51Speaker 2: but they play Graham Kapowson tonight in week one in
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: our game of the week, our weekly high school feature
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: here on 93.3 KJR FM. And you know, that's, why
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: we do it. We give the platform to these coaches
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: who can highlight their players, their student-athletes, and as he said,
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: they deserve it. And it's sometimes lost in this market, frankly,
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: as Jessamyn said, the 13th biggest media market in the country,
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: which is dominated by pro sports and the Seahawks, the
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: Super Bowl champions, and a Big Ten team in our backyard.
- 1:09:19Speaker 7: At University of Washington.
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: But these kids put in a ton of time and
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: so do the coaches to mold them into young men
- 1:09:27Speaker 2: and women to become young adults.
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: Our future leaders.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Yeah, our future leaders. So it's great. I mean, when
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: I officiate, I sometimes wear a West Point cap or
- 1:09:36Speaker 2: a pullover to the game for the sole purpose of
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: someone coming up to me and asking me about it.
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: Last night, a Ballard coach asked me about it and
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: asked me about hey can you talk to a couple
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: kids on our team that are interested in going to
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: a service academy and that's all that's that's great and
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: that's why we do it that's why we wanted to
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: have this weekly feature to highlight those young men and
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: women girls and boys before they become college and what
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: they're doing at high school so thanks to take the
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: time on a game day that's a big ask i
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: know for coach tom try and coach jeff logan to
- 1:10:08Speaker 2: join us we'll do it every week we'll have another
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: big game next week and we'll reveal the schedule as
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: it goes along but uh We'll try to get around
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: the sound of two. And I got it. Hoquiam Aberdeen.
- 1:10:18Speaker 2: I got it. Olympic Stadium tonight. 121st meeting. We are aware.
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: Up next, your chance to be a part of the show. 49451.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: We have a couple of talkbacks. We'll play back next
- 1:10:28Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM.
- 1:10:39Speaker 28: Hey, Rodney here.
- 1:10:41Speaker 4: What's going on?
- 1:10:41Speaker 28: I'm getting no respect getting on the air. Tell you what,
- 1:10:44Speaker 28: no respect. It's Rodney Manners here. I mean, Dangerfield. I
- 1:10:49Speaker 28: get confused because that's what the Manners are on the field.
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: Dangerous.
- 1:10:52Speaker 28: And not in a good way, know what I mean?
- 1:10:55Speaker 28: I'll tell you what, good thing they got Naylor on
- 1:10:57Speaker 28: the team because these guys are getting hammered.
- 1:10:59Speaker 4: They get no respect. They should get no respect. I
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: should get some respect though. Hey!
- 1:11:05Speaker 15: Hey there, Greg and Jess Mahler here checking in for
- 1:11:08Speaker 15: the Apple.
- 1:11:08Speaker 6: Cup weekend, baby.
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: Purple and gold raining down. Cougs don't have a freaking.
- 1:11:14Speaker 8: Chance, man.
- 1:11:14Speaker 15: I'll tell you what, you've got to be freaking kidding me.
- 1:11:17Speaker 28: They think they have a chance at our stadium.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: It's going to be.
- 1:11:19Speaker 13: Nothing but purple and gold.
- 1:11:20Speaker 8: Jed Fish, I went to school there.
- 1:11:23Speaker 29: Even though I didn't, I'll still be on the sideline
- 1:11:25Speaker 29: chiming in. Dogs by 50, baby.
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: Happy Apple Cup, man.
- 1:11:30Speaker 12: Oh, Jess, Greg, don't forget the two-time star. They champion
- 1:11:35Speaker 12: Sumner Spartans. They are traveling to Eagle, Idaho to take
- 1:11:40Speaker 12: on Eagle, the Idaho State Champions 5A this weekend. Thank
- 1:11:46Speaker 12: you for all you do.
- 1:11:48Speaker 5: I'm going to pause because we have a lot more.
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: But those ones were banner talkbacks.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: You had too many. You can't reap what you sowed.
- 1:12:04Speaker 6: Wow.
- 1:12:05Speaker 29: I wanted to call in and give a shout out
- 1:12:07Speaker 29: to my guy G Bell for his service in the
- 1:12:10Speaker 29: military and also always acknowledging service members and using his
- 1:12:14Speaker 29: platform to speak.
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: Highly on that note. Also touching on high school sports.
- 1:12:19Speaker 29: I also want to give a shout out to Jets,
- 1:12:21Speaker 29: the best damn.
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: Producer in the morning. Got much love for you guys.
- 1:12:25Speaker 15: And as one more thing, Greg, I will always stand
- 1:12:28Speaker 15: by you with.
- 1:12:30Speaker 29: Toblodo is the problem.
- 1:12:37Speaker 3: We have a couple lawnmower ones.
- 1:12:39Speaker 2: Oh, here we go.
- 1:12:40Speaker 26: Hoagwim.
- 1:12:41Speaker 3: The oldest football rivalry in the state of Washington.
- 1:12:45Speaker 12: Go Bobcats.
- 1:12:47Speaker 3: That was pretty short and sweet.
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: That's got to be James. 360 James.
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: We have another lawnmower.
- 1:12:54Speaker 30: Little-known Northwest baseball history. Bill Murray actually played minor league
- 1:12:59Speaker 30: baseball in Hoagwim. for a very short time because his
- 1:13:03Speaker 30: friend owned the team. That was just before he left
- 1:13:05Speaker 30: to go.
- 1:13:05Speaker 6: Be on Saturday Night Live.
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: If you missed that, he said that Bill Murray once
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: played minor league baseball for the Class A team that
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: was out at Grays Harbor at Hoquiam's Olympic Stadium before
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: he became a Saturday Night Live, right.
- 1:13:17Speaker 3: Before he became Saturday Night Live.
- 1:13:18Speaker 5: I fact-checked that, and it was right before he did
- 1:13:20Speaker 5: the movie Meatballs.
- 1:13:22Speaker 6: Oh.
- 1:13:23Speaker 3: Yes, and then he went.
- 1:13:24Speaker 5: On to SNL fame and various other fames. But yes,
- 1:13:29Speaker 5: he's correct.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: He did play. I think it was Grays Harbor.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: Grays Harbor used to be a minor league team out there.
- 1:13:38Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:13:38Speaker 6: If you don't know.
- 1:13:39Speaker 5: It was in 1978, so it predated my time out
- 1:13:43Speaker 5: here and my life.
- 1:13:45Speaker 3: But, yeah, he is correct.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: He is correct.
- 1:13:49Speaker 15: Hey, Chuck Powell with the Morning Show. I just want
- 1:13:52Speaker 15: to chime in. It is not Jerry's fault. If you
- 1:13:54Speaker 15: heard my rant this morning, it's about coworkers and other people.
- 1:13:58Speaker 15: I think Jerry's doing a wonderful job. I think it's
- 1:14:01Speaker 15: good that we embrace analytics 24-7, no feel for the game.
- 1:14:06Speaker 15: I think it's good that it clearly comes from Jerry
- 1:14:09Speaker 15: in the front office, the analytics approach. But let's blame
- 1:14:12Speaker 15: Dan Wilson. I love Jerry DePoto. He is the greatest
- 1:14:16Speaker 15: president in the history of baseball.
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: I don't think he's bad at his job.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: I do. He's good at pitchers. But his job is
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: to be a leader right now. The entire organization lacks leadership.
- 1:14:31Speaker 3: Isn't Dan Wilson's job to be the leader?
- 1:14:33Speaker 7: Dan Wilson's job is to do whatever Jerry DiPoto tells
- 1:14:36Speaker 7: him to do.
- 1:14:37Speaker 3: So then it is his job, yes.
- 1:14:39Speaker 7: That's why he's a manager with zero experience.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: I just went full circle on that one. That's why he's... Yeah.
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: Jerry DiPoto pulls the strings and Dan Wilson reacts. I...
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: I'm with Larry Stone the other day saying that Dan
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: Wilson's just going to say, ah, I'm done. I don't
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: need this.
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: It wouldn't shock me. It wouldn't knock my socks off.
- 1:14:58Speaker 5: But I do think he has a love for the
- 1:15:01Speaker 5: game and a love for the players that comes.
- 1:15:03Speaker 3: From more of a player standpoint.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:15:08Speaker 3: And he was just kind of vaulted into that.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: Of course. Yeah.
- 1:15:13Speaker 3: They put a rocket on his back and.
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: Just said, go. He had never managed anything. He managed
- 1:15:18Speaker 2: a girls' softball team, a relative's softball team.
- 1:15:21Speaker 3: And that was just being a dad.
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: I mean, yeah.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: I mean, come on. There's a reason that Scott Service
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: and Dan Wilson both each did not have any managerial
- 1:15:33Speaker 2: experience at any level before Jerry DiPoto had him be manager.
- 1:15:35Speaker 3: I do like your theory.
- 1:15:37Speaker 2: There's a common thread.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: That's 11 years.
- 1:15:38Speaker 5: No. No.
- 1:15:41Speaker 3: The defense is wrong. You missed.
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: It earlier this week.
- 1:15:47Speaker 3: I think your case holds water.
- 1:15:52Speaker 7: My cousin Vinny, if you missed it this week, go
- 1:15:54Speaker 7: to the iHeartRadio app.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: I think it was, what, Monday or Tuesday we went
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: through that?
- 1:15:57Speaker 3: It wasn't yesterday.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: The stuff about, there's a couple questions about the Seahawks.
- 1:16:05Speaker 7: Let's get to those. Rod, 206.
- 1:16:07Speaker 2: Will Mike McDonald's game plan change or stay the same
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: since the Hawks played New England the last game? Absolutely
- 1:16:11Speaker 2: will change. The entire league studied that Super Bowl game
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: tape and the Seahawks' 20 games last season. McDonald has
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: yings to the yangs, the zigs to the zags. He
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: knows that the entire league is going to be coming
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: for what McDonald did last season. Nickel blitzes, Witherspoon from
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: the inside, what Eamon Worry was doing when Eamon Worry
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: gets healthy again. I can tell you this. He's got
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: different fronts. He's got different blitzes. I'm not going to
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: get into the details of it, but they're different. There's
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: players that are playing in different spots, moving up and
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: down the defensive line. I think Byron Murphy's going to
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: have more of an opportunity outside than he has yet
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: combined in his first two seasons.
- 1:16:52Speaker 3: How excited are you for his season?
- 1:16:54Speaker 7: Because I am.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Yeah, he's primed to cash in huge this time next year,
- 1:17:00Speaker 2: and he knows it. And, yeah, they're going to move
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: him maybe even as a five technique outside shoulder of
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: the guard, become guard and tackle, where he's been mostly
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: inside the guard here the first two seasons and still
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: got seven sacks last year doing that. But Leonard Williams
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: may be getting used in different ways. Now they have
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: Dante Fowler Jr. as another pass rush option. It all
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: does hinge on Nick Emanwarie. He really makes Mike McDonald's
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: multiplicity multiple. And when he's not there, they are limited.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: So we'll see if he plays week one. As I said,
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: that seems iffy.
- 1:17:34Speaker 3: But they want him at his best.
- 1:17:36Speaker 6: Of course.
- 1:17:37Speaker 3: So they're 100% not going to rush him.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: No. 17-game season. Exactly. 425, what's your take on the
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: impact of hard knocks? We were worried we would lose
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: some of our strategic advantages. Or was it a positive?
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: Being an outsider, just a fan, it seems like it
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: worked out well. It did work out well. I think
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: the Seahawks ended up embracing that they wanted to show
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: their culture to the NFL and kind of say, look
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: what we do. They didn't show all. And they kept
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: some things under wraps. And I know there were some
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: things they vetoed and kept out. But I think overall,
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: they said this can be a promotional recruiting video for
- 1:18:11Speaker 2: future free agents and say, well, I'd love to play
- 1:18:14Speaker 2: in Seattle. I'd like to do that.
- 1:18:16Speaker 3: So just check out the bald eagles.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: Yeah, they were stars of the show, weren't they?
- 1:18:22Speaker 3: They always are.
- 1:18:23Speaker 5: Even the people who have worked there for ages will go,
- 1:18:27Speaker 5: did you see?
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: There's four today. There's five today.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: Two, five, three. The only variable that gives the Pats
- 1:18:33Speaker 2: a chance in my mind is that it's the first
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: game of the year.
- 1:18:35Speaker 7: Fluky things happen in week one.
- 1:18:38Speaker 2: That's true.
- 1:18:39Speaker 7: Also, tackling tends to be very poor in week one
- 1:18:42Speaker 7: and two.
- 1:18:43Speaker 3: Because you haven't been hit. You haven't hit anybody. It
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: just makes sense.
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: They haven't played a game. The starters, you're going to
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: see Wednesday night, have not played a game since February the.
- 1:18:53Speaker 7: 8th, Super Bowl 60. Have not tackled anyone since then.
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: Yeah, there's being in shape and then there's being hit
- 1:19:00Speaker 3: in shape.
- 1:19:01Speaker 2: They were not tackled. I've said this many times and
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: I've reported it. They do not tackle in training camp.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: No one gets brought to ground.
- 1:19:07Speaker 6: Nobody.
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: Even when they do tackling drills, they do it with pads,
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: and they have landing pads, and they just don't do it.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: And none of the starters played anything in the preseason.
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: Wednesday night will be the first time they tackle and
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: have been tackled since February the 8th in Super Bowl 60.
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: Well, regardless of athletic acumen.
- 1:19:27Speaker 5: it is difficult to do something your body's not used to.
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: I mean, I had a really good friend, Liz Matthews,
- 1:19:35Speaker 3: and she.
- 1:19:36Speaker 5: Told me, you know, Liz standing is a shape being
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: out of training camp, right? You just have to see
- 1:19:43Speaker 5: him being on the sidelines as I do.
- 1:19:46Speaker 3: You're just standing.
- 1:19:47Speaker 5: And I'm not a very good sit still person, Greg,
- 1:19:51Speaker 5: if you hadn't noticed.
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: Um, okay. Yeah.
- 1:19:54Speaker 5: I can't sit still very often.
- 1:19:56Speaker 3: Um, You have to stand still.
- 1:19:59Speaker 5: Yesterday, I was working the clubhouse, and I was holding up,
- 1:20:03Speaker 5: what is this phone weigh? Five ounces, probably, to record
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: dugout stuff.
- 1:20:09Speaker 15: Yes.
- 1:20:11Speaker 31: It becomes a little shaky, but I could, you know,
- 1:20:16Speaker 31: I used to be able to deadlift 200 pounds and
- 1:20:20Speaker 31: it's whatever your body is used to and you're doing
- 1:20:23Speaker 31: something different is my point.
- 1:20:25Speaker 8: Okay.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: That's going to get a reaction on the text line.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: Deadlifting 200 pounds just to let you know.
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: Oh my God.
- 1:20:30Speaker 5: I was so good at deadlifting. Squats and deadlifts were
- 1:20:33Speaker 5: my jam. Hand cleans, not so much.
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: Squats have never been... I've always hurt my back squatting.
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: And I think I've hurt my back in the summer squatting.
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: Did you have proper form, Greg?
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: Of course not.
- 1:20:44Speaker 6: No, you did not.
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: My wife, Dudley Do-Right wife, has perfect form.
- 1:20:47Speaker 3: I could see that. When he looks like she would.
- 1:20:50Speaker 7: She's killer on squats.
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: I got accused of not being white in the locker room.
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: Or in the weight room, I mean. Yes, by a
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: basketball player.
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: 206. Last Hard Knocks had a big emphasis on the
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: ready squat and how they were a part of the team.
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: Did the Ready Squad receive Super Bowl rings last year? Yes,
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: they did. In fact, even players who weren't on the
- 1:21:12Speaker 2: team at the end of the season. D'Anthony Bell was
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: on the Carolina Panthers at the end of the season.
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: He got a Super Bowl ring. Yes, they did. They
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: made sure of that. So it was 70-plus players got
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: Super Bowl rings for last season.
- 1:21:24Speaker 14: Jody, Jody, Jody.
- 1:21:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's part of that.
- 1:21:26Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: Absolutely. 253, awesome stuff with the high school coaches. Gives
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: me goosebumps and brings back memories.
- 1:21:32Speaker 7: That's cool.
- 1:21:32Speaker 15: Aw.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: 253, wish I had high school coaches like that. Both
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: seem so legit.
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: I love hearing that feedback.
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that was cool. I mean, they both had those coaches.
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: I mean, we're talking about two of the best coaches
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: in the West Coast. But yeah, they were representative of
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: the student-athlete experience, their programs, the bigger picture. You heard
- 1:21:54Speaker 2: Jeff Logan talk about families and their talks about playing
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: college football these days.
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: I'm very excited for this feature.
- 1:22:01Speaker 2: It's good stuff. We've got another one next week, next Friday.
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: I'll reveal next week the game. We have a lined
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: up of games. I want to shout out to Daniel Bean.
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: He's helping me with coordinating all of this and making
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: sure we pull it off. Up next, the mayor of
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: Maple Valley, Ian Furness. I think he's in studio with
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: me today. Has he had some brewery?
- 1:22:19Speaker 3: No, he's actually on remote. He is at Snoqualmie Casino.
- 1:22:22Speaker 6: Oh, of course.
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: He's at Snoqualmie Casino for the first full football weekend
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: of the season. Anne will join us next.
- 1:22:27Speaker 3: I might drive there right now.
- 1:22:28Speaker 4: Really?
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: No, I have work to do.
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: Anne's next. Welcome back. Greg Bell, Justin McIntyre with you
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: on 93.3 KJRFM. We've talked to Farhan Lalji, at least
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: in bits and pieces, as he was moving his kid
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: into a dorm.
- 1:23:10Speaker 3: He made it work.
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: Prep school in Virginia. Talk about the NFL. We talked
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: to Graham Kapowson High School coach Jeff Logan. Lake Stevens
- 1:23:18Speaker 2: High School coach Tom Try before their showdown tonight in
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: Lake Stevens. Oh, man.
- 1:23:23Speaker 6: That's a game. Let's go.
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: Week one, huh? They don't mess around, man.
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: Oh, God.
- 1:23:29Speaker 6: That'll be good. It's a Lake Stevens, too, right?
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: It is at Lake Stevens High School tonight, yes.
- 1:23:33Speaker 6: Great.
- 1:23:35Speaker 32: That is one of the best places in the state
- 1:23:37Speaker 32: on a Friday night to watch a high school football game.
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: I've never been, and now you're making me want to go.
- 1:23:41Speaker 6: It is phenomenal. Their stadium is... Yeah, it's cool. It's
- 1:23:46Speaker 6: really cool.
- 1:23:47Speaker 32: I mean, you feel like you're walking into something a
- 1:23:49Speaker 32: lot bigger than a high school game. You know, I
- 1:23:51Speaker 32: heard you talking about this earlier, Greg. And I love
- 1:23:55Speaker 32: the fact you guys are doing this on Fridays. I
- 1:23:57Speaker 32: think it's awesome. We had Todd Millis on yesterday.
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: Yeah, it was great.
- 1:24:00Speaker 6: I heard it. Yeah, we do a little bit on
- 1:24:02Speaker 6: our show, too.
- 1:24:02Speaker 32: And the station as a whole, since I got here
- 1:24:05Speaker 32: 20 years ago, has always done that. We're doing varsity
- 1:24:08Speaker 32: football live again, Fane, on Fridays, I think. So I
- 1:24:12Speaker 32: love that. And I think it's an underrated state for
- 1:24:14Speaker 32: high school football. And I think you'd agree. Like, I
- 1:24:18Speaker 32: looked last night around a bunch of the Thursday games
- 1:24:21Speaker 32: that were taking place, some packed houses. I know we
- 1:24:25Speaker 32: had that out of Maple Valley at Maxwell Stadium for
- 1:24:27Speaker 32: the Tahoma Eastlake game.
- 1:24:29Speaker 6: It was literally sold out. Like, you could not.
- 1:24:31Speaker 32: They were throwing people away. Yeah, and that's a few
- 1:24:33Speaker 32: thousand people.
- 1:24:34Speaker 6: It's just great.
- 1:24:35Speaker 32: Great high school around here. Great high school football around here.
- 1:24:38Speaker 32: How was your game? How was Greg Bell the official?
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: It was.
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: It went well.
- 1:24:43Speaker 7: It was 23-6.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: Ballard beat Lincoln of Seattle at Northwest Athletic Center at Ingram. Yeah,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: it was a few penalties, but we tried to without
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: throwing a lot of flags for week one.
- 1:24:56Speaker 6: Nobody yelling at you too hard or anything?
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: No, I get along great with Clay.
- 1:25:01Speaker 3: You let them play?
- 1:25:02Speaker 2: I was on Lincoln's sidelines. I do let them play.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: The last thing he said to me on the way
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: out the door, remember, let them play. He always says
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: that to me. Is he taught?
- 1:25:12Speaker 6: What is he talking about?
- 1:25:15Speaker 32: Listen, I've seen a lot of Ma's officiated basketball games.
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: That's right.
- 1:25:20Speaker 6: Let him play is not in his vocabulary.
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: I'm going to tell you.
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: That right now. Ma's, if you're listening.
- 1:25:24Speaker 2: He's the show. Oh, he.
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: Talks to the kid.
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: He's like, yeah. Ask my kid. He'll tell you. He
- 1:25:32Speaker 6: walked to the gym. There's five fouls on him before
- 1:25:34Speaker 6: he even stepped on the floor.
- 1:25:35Speaker 2: Well, that could have been more about you than him.
- 1:25:37Speaker 32: No, Ma's. Yeah, that's probably part of it. No, I'll say, like,
- 1:25:42Speaker 32: Maz does a really good job, all joking aside. And
- 1:25:44Speaker 32: I've watched a lot of his games. Rod Marr does
- 1:25:47Speaker 32: an incredible– Rod Marr is one of the best officials,
- 1:25:49Speaker 32: high school basketball officials in the state. People want to
- 1:25:51Speaker 32: know who Rod– Rod's the Seahawks photographer. You probably saw
- 1:25:54Speaker 32: him at the end of Hard Knocks. He was in that–
- 1:25:56Speaker 32: not the end, the last episode when they were eating
- 1:25:58Speaker 32: the chicken. He was a guy with a camera.
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: He was a longtime Seattle Times photographer, award-winning one.
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: Yeah, he's– He's a hell of an official, man.
- 1:26:06Speaker 5: You know, he gypped me out of a three in
- 1:26:08Speaker 5: a charity basketball game. He gypped me, and Graz actually
- 1:26:13Speaker 5: fought him into legitimizing it.
- 1:26:15Speaker 6: You launched a three and hit it?
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: That's one more three than Angel Reese has hit all year.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: She and I could fight and then be really good
- 1:26:26Speaker 3: friends after.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: So the last ten minutes on this show, Ian, we've
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: learned that Jessamyn can, used to be able to deadlift
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: 200 pounds and hits three-pointers. Okay. Yeah. Which is more surprising?
- 1:26:37Speaker 3: I maxed out squatting at 205.
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: Which is more surprising?
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: The text line says you're flirting with us, by the way,
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: when you say you're deadlifting 200.
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: Well, come find me.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: She's married. She's off-limits. Sorry.
- 1:26:49Speaker 32: I would say more impressive probably would be the three.
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:26:55Speaker 3: I agree with you.
- 1:26:56Speaker 6: Because she wasn't a basketball player. She was a volleyball player.
- 1:26:58Speaker 3: Excuse me. I was a hooper.
- 1:27:00Speaker 6: Oh, well, then maybe it's a 200.
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: No, but for my skills, like deadlifting, it's a skill
- 1:27:08Speaker 5: you work on, right?
- 1:27:09Speaker 25: Yeah.
- 1:27:09Speaker 5: And, you know, you have to have the back core strength,
- 1:27:12Speaker 5: and it's hammies. Squatting was harder for me, and then
- 1:27:17Speaker 5: hang cleaning was the toughest.
- 1:27:20Speaker 32: I think everything just hurt when I was thinking about
- 1:27:22Speaker 32: trying to do that right now.
- 1:27:23Speaker 6: My ripe old age. But what was your max out
- 1:27:26Speaker 6: at squats?
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:27:29Speaker 6: I grew up in the 80s, Jess. We had dumbbells
- 1:27:32Speaker 6: and nobody knew how much they were.
- 1:27:33Speaker 5: That sounds a little more fun.
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: You're out at the casino. I won't ask you what
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: bets you've placed already, but tell me what you got
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: going on today.
- 1:27:45Speaker 32: We've got a busy show. It's a Friday show. The
- 1:27:47Speaker 32: return of Greg Cosell. Excited for that.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: Oh, wow. All right.
- 1:27:50Speaker 6: We'll probably use Greg because they expanded the show. So
- 1:27:53Speaker 6: last year, Greg.
- 1:27:53Speaker 32: Was at 1-ish or 1-20, right, Jess? This year, Greg's
- 1:27:58Speaker 32: going to join us in the noon hour.
- 1:27:59Speaker 3: Greg can be a floater, yeah.
- 1:28:01Speaker 32: Yeah, Greg's going to be in the 12-20 segment today.
- 1:28:03Speaker 32: We'll really kind of hit hard Seahawks, just kind of
- 1:28:06Speaker 32: general stuff since we're a few days away from the game.
- 1:28:08Speaker 32: We'll talk Patriots as well. We'll get to that with Greg.
- 1:28:11Speaker 32: Nobody does the film study better than him. That's coming
- 1:28:14Speaker 32: up 12-20. Danny O'Neill, 1-20 today, and then Rob Rang
- 1:28:16Speaker 32: will preview the college football weekend. Danny and I will
- 1:28:18Speaker 32: talk a little Apple Cup, obviously, too. So that's a
- 1:28:21Speaker 32: busy show from the Snoqualmie Hotel and Casino today.
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: And the best thing we just did in the last
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: 10 minutes is we didn't say the word Mariners.
