- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Maria, there is not a date.
- 5:01SPEAKER_03: Sorry, Maria.
- 5:02SPEAKER_03: You can tell I'm having a rough day here, Maria.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, from the deal pit.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: Thank you so much for joining us on the podcast.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: We're so happy.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: You've got a great story to tell us.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: So tell us about how this all started.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the deal pit.
- 5:16SPEAKER_03: What is it?
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: How did it come to reality?
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: Where are you located?
- 5:20SPEAKER_03: What can people expect when they enter the store?
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Well, let's just start with where it all started.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I left a good job that I actually really liked.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: I worked at uh Big River Packaging.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: Um great people, great people.
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: It's just Kip's a really good friend of mine.
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: I just inflation, guys, it is killing everybody.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: So I had a jump ship.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: I thought, okay, I'm gonna apply for this job.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: They gave me more money, better deal.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: I jumped, I started, and it was like six weeks later they locked the door, even though they said the lease was, you know, so this was the former location of another store.
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: Yes, we can say it.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: I think it'll be safe.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Um, discount bins right next to Planet Fitness and Marshall's.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: I took over, new team.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: We were doing good.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: The sales were starting to look climb, we're getting new people in, all that great stuff.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: So um I was loving it.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: It's been a long time since I dealt with the public.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Otherwise, the last 10 years I would say I was I would hide.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: You know, you get stuck in that not communicating, not being social with other people.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: We talked about COVID before moving into the city.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: It's changed people permanently.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: I really do think that.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: And you saw some success in the business model.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, definitely.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: So you pursued it.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, I did.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: So, anyways, they locked the door.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: I emailed the owner, tried to talk him into let's move it to a different building because of the overhead was way too much.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: It was a big space.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: Uh a lot of wasted space too.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Um, so Friday, we closed on a Tuesday or a Wednesday.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: I had got a hold of Dennis and we went and checked out the place right by his office on fifth by Dollar General.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Sorry.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: Wow, that's all I'm gonna say to that.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Uh there's a reason why it's 33 cents a square foot.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: And so then I had my former assistant manager, Courtney Holcomb, come with me so I wasn't, you know, alone or whatever, get her get a second opinion.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I'm a very open-minded person.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: And so she's like, uh-uh, uh-uh.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: So then Dennis said, Are you free Monday?
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: I have a spot that I think would be a perfect location, um, just the right size to get started.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: What do you say?
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: I said, let's do it.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 8:00SPEAKER_03: So this location that you identify that's now home to the deal pit is located in the former Hibbit Sports location at Bella Rose shopping complex by Maurice's.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 8:13SPEAKER_03: So now what is the concept behind the business?
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Um, it is new product over stock.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: Uh where does it all come from?
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: It comes from different warehouses.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: There are so many warehouses across this country um that you can get the products, but you got to be careful because um if you don't know what a Gaylord is, it's a palette with cardboard that goes up high or it can be short and it's all piled inside.
- 8:43SPEAKER_03: Do you know what's inside when you get it?
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Most times no.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: So you just get to look at the top of it.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: So it's like a treasure hunt.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, it is.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, it is.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: So it gets exciting when you get back to the store and we're on loading it.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Uh, because we have no dock, so we're hand on loading it.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: I remember talking to you when you were gonna go on your first run with your sister.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: And you said, This is good.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: I just can't wait.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: You're so excited.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: And now you're doing it every Thursday.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Because we just don't have enough money.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Um, so we have to wait for our sales, take that, let's go, let's see how how much bigger we can get this week.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: So I'm it's fun, it really is.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: So we get there, you kind of look at the top of it, you've got targets, you there's Amazon, there's Walmart, all those big stores.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: And so it's either they're seasonal pulls, they're overstock.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: But these are new items, they're not not all the time.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: They can be customer returns to the service desk.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: That's why I I kind of don't touch the Walmart one.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: Amazon is it can be a mix.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: Uh Target is normally 90% new, it's just they're a little pickier with their products on the shelves.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 9:54SPEAKER_00: So, like if the box is dented or has been opened, but they're good deals.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, yeah, for the most part, yes.
- 10:00SPEAKER_00: Um, so then there's a price, and you go with that price and you take that baby home.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And so our home would be the deal pit and we unload it by hand.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: And that's price per pallet, right?
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Um, most places it's so much per palette.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: So, like right now, most places are selling target palettes from 700 to depending on how tall that gay lord is, it could be a thousand.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: And then there's other places where you go online and you don't get to see it, but you get a manifest that can be not correct up to 10, 20%.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you find magical things, and uh that takes sometimes three weeks to get.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know.
- 10:46SPEAKER_03: How often do you get this new stock in?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: That's what we do every Thursday.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: So every Thursday you I leave, my girls run the store, my sister and I go on a trip.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: Um it's great though, because halftime I have my sister laughing so hard she's got tears as she's driving, but it's great.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: It's safe.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And it's all over the Midwest.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, where's how far away have you gone?
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: What's the furthest you've gone?
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: The furthest I think we've gone now is four hours to Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And that's the one we're going to again tomorrow with a trailer.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: And I think we're getting three pallets, if not four.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: I've already got one lined up that they had online um on their page as a take, I think, you know, where they just want that one out of the way.
- 11:33SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And it has a rug, white and black.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, cool.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: So if you have not followed the deal pit on Facebook, I encourage you to do so.
- 11:42SPEAKER_03: Uh if you look at this broadcast you're watching live, up in the top left-hand corner of your screen is a QR code that you can scan that will take you directly to the Deal Pit's Facebook page.
- 11:53SPEAKER_03: Now, it did look like, if you still do, I don't know, but you had uh some Halloween stuff come in.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: Uh we had for two weeks we had uh Dollar General Halloween items.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: And this last week today is two dollars.
- 12:06SPEAKER_00: Get your booty in there.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Um but it was Target Halloween.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: So we've got the cutest like little costumes, but I did not let that drop to three.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Uh that stuck at five because hey guys, I still got to make a dollar.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: I can't have the community keep waiting for two dollar and one dollar a day because I'm not gonna be able to keep my doors open.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna be able to poorly pay my employees while we wait for this to grow.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: But you've got to get there first, right?
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can hold the best stuff.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Always leave Saturday.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Because Friday is when we lock our doors and watch people peek in the window and think we're open, but we are closed on Fridays, and that's when we empty everything out and stand in We like to just kill all the germs.
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: Um make sure it's clean because you'd be amazed what kind of little glitter and things fall off of stuff.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: So we get everything cleaned up and then we start throwing in the new stuff, and that's when we really start seeing what's in in those gay lords.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: I think it's exciting.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: It does.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: I bet.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Now you are a smart businesswoman, we can tell.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: But tell us the smart move you made with uh Nuboco.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Nuboko.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I like to call it Nubo.
- 13:22SPEAKER_03: Newbo.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: Nubo.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: Well, that's the short version of the Nubo market, yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like it.
- 13:27SPEAKER_03: So just to provide some context, so here at Grove Clinton, we have a program called Entra Fuel, and we have partnered with New Boco, which is the new bohemian company out of Cedar Rapids, which is a nonprofit that specializes in entrepreneurial development.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: And Alex Taylor is our lead business development coach, and he's in office twice a month, and he spends time with people uh like yourself, kind of going through the potential pitfalls of running a business and also highlighting some of the areas where they think you can be a little bit more successful.
- 14:00SPEAKER_03: So I'm glad that went well.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it did.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: It did.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: Um, because I only applied once for a business loan, got rejected.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Um, because hey, let's be honest, uh my husband and I I inflation kills when you have too many kids still at home.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: So that's the world for everybody.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: So I'm not one that has the savings or anything currently because everything's wiped out.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: And so when I applied, yes, I had two credit cards at default.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: That's why I left Big River was to be able to have the money to actually start getting things right and whatever we needed to do.
- 14:40SPEAKER_03: Uh and so Alex was able to help you out?
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: So after I got rejected for that, I Googled, found Girl Clinton on Google.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: Nice.
- 14:50SPEAKER_00: And so after I talked to the loan officer there, I came straight over here with already my rough draft proposal and said, here you go.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Um, so I'm here.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: You guys supposedly help in some way.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: And he's like, okay, where's your numbers?
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: I'm like, next page.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Matt's like, well, do you have this and this next page?
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Well, okay, we're not gonna put you in the classes for eight weeks, but I want you to meet Alex from New Boko.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And he's like, Can I keep this?
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: Can I send this to Alex?
- 15:30SPEAKER_00: And I said, Yeah, definitely.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not gonna take, I'm not gonna stop till I get a yes.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: Tenacity.
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: And I was Alex is not a guy who bought a business book on Amazon and called himself an expert.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, he has started several successful businesses, sold several successful businesses, and him and his wife are currently owners and proprietors of a successful small business called Wolfables.
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: I don't think it's small anymore.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: He said it is nationwide.
- 15:59SPEAKER_03: He does not do anything.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: It's his wife that runs all of it.
- 16:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, he did tell me.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: No, he was he was instrumental in st in starting up some of the John Papa John Entrepreneurial Center at the University of Iowa.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: So he's very well respected throughout the state.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: So that was that was nice.
- 16:17SPEAKER_00: We sat down and Matt told me, like, he's gonna be honest with you.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: And I said, Bring it.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Hit me with what I need to hear.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Because if I'm not gonna go in there and be blindsided by something, because you can't be a business owner and not be ready to take the negativity, the hateful words, you're gonna always have a negative Nancy.
- 16:40SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry for to anybody that's named Nancy, but yeah, um, I apologize for that one.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: But but it's the truth.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: It's the truth, okay?
- 16:50SPEAKER_03: Because if you go into the entrepreneurial world just being all Pollyanna and thinking that everything is gonna be okay and kind of self-absorbed of your own knowledge and not willing to listen to anybody else, you will fail rapidly.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: Yes because there are people out there that have been there, done that, have failed multiple times, and why not take advantage of those subject matter experts that we have here at Grow Clinton?
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: And Matt and I do it constantly.
- 17:14SPEAKER_03: And I it it I hate doing it.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: I hate when somebody comes in and they're like so passionate about this business idea.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: And our goal is never just to crush their dreams, right?
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: But we are talking about things like okay, you need some upfront investment cash to cover your first couple of months of overhead, and how are you gonna buy your inventory?
- 17:32SPEAKER_03: And what about insurance?
- 17:33SPEAKER_03: Because now you're saying you need to hang a shingle on a storefront.
- 17:36SPEAKER_03: Do you really need to do that?
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: Or can you have can you do an e-commerce sale set up where you don't have to have all the stock in place?
- 17:44SPEAKER_03: So there's a lot of things, and usually by the end of it, they're looking at us like you guys suck.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: Like I came in here passionate.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Now you told me about all these things I'm gonna have to do, and I don't think I can afford that.
- 17:54SPEAKER_03: And they always say your original investors are family, friends, and fools.
- 17:59SPEAKER_03: And that's what you go to first.
- 18:01SPEAKER_03: And that's not derogatory or mean, but you go to your family, your friends, or you use your own capital, and then you tap into those people that have some extra money and are willing to help you out.
- 18:10SPEAKER_03: When you apply for traditional financing, that's when you're gonna require to have a business plan and uh estimated revenue and things of that nature.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: And for those people that are intimidated by that, it is difficult to secure that funding.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: Well, and still going for a this is something they don't tell you guys is you go in for a startup loan, they don't wanna give you money.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: They don't, they want you to show sales, proof that it's gonna work.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: Well, so I don't even know why they call it startup because it's not startup.
- 18:41SPEAKER_00: It's give me six months of business and give me your papers and what you have made, sold, what your inventory costs, and what you're paying, and how many hours you're giving to your employees.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: So that again, don't sit on Google and find startup loans and just throw your information out there.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: You're wasting your time.
- 19:03SPEAKER_03: Even like grants, people will find these grants.
- 19:05SPEAKER_03: Well, I found a small business grant for women-owned small business, and you're like, well, that's fine, but the grant does require a 25% match.
- 19:12SPEAKER_03: So whatever you're applying for, make sure you have 25% of that cash ready because they're gonna want their money if they issue you that grant.
- 19:18SPEAKER_03: So there's just a lot of things, and there's a lot of you know, small prints and fine details and red tape that you have to learn how to navigate.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: And I really do feel that's where you know Alex excels.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: And then our partnership with the Small Business Development Center out of the uh Eastern Island Community College office in Davenport, their coaches have been great to work with.
- 19:38SPEAKER_03: Uh, one of them is by far a money guy, and he is not gonna sit down with you and and share these potential revenue streams.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: He's gonna look at what you have, what you can actually make on that inventory or the service you're providing.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: And he's potentially going to crush your trees.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: Well, and you know, one thing though, one time Andy and I did meet with somebody who came in and was passionate, had a business they wanted, and by the time they walked out, they were they thought we sucked.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: And but they always come back and say thank you.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: He came back and said, I would have lost my shirt if you guys wouldn't have talked to me about it.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, people want to cash in their 401k and take a penalty.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: And it's like, get your ducks in a row before you do this, because there's no going back.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: And this is a success story because you did all of that stuff.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: Oh, you followed it all and you were you were tenacious about it and yes, ready to do the work.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: And guys, I'll admit, like, it it's I'm I've got cat claws in the wall every day because I I didn't go for extra money because the gentleman uh for the small business loans was like, just run with what you got from Kiva, you know, don't go any further in debt um because of what kind of business you're going into.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: So let me tell you, that's why we do not have wooden bins.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: I don't have wood money, I have plastic money, guys.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: Kiva loan is so new boco facilitates that application for us.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: Amazing.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: So they have a Kiva specialist that works there in partnership with them that can apply for some of those loans.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: And it's it's a non-traditional small business loan.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 21:10SPEAKER_03: You know, banks traditionally are more conservative.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 21:12SPEAKER_03: By design, I don't know why this TV just turned up.
- 21:15SPEAKER_03: Spaliamos.
- 21:16SPEAKER_03: But by design, they're conservative just because that's you know, they don't want to take a risk.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: If they're lending you money, that's money that they can't lend somebody else.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: So they have to make sure the investment's going to work out in their favor.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: So what are you what is your biggest surprise about running your own business?
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: Um, because you just went into this kind of, I mean, you manage businesses and stuff, but you business owning is totally different.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: I uh I told Alex, give me my assignments.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: I think I met with him twice before we opened the doors.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, I did email them off and on if I had any questions, things like that.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: And then they're still available.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: And then I worked with Kathleen um through Kiva and got that all set up and going for that loan because it's clear.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Crowdfunded.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Um, it's not like I'm actually borrowing it from somebody.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: I borrowed it from people that believed in my story that was posted, and they they lent me the money.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: So as I slowly make those payments back every month, slowly they get their money.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: Like I had a friend of mine just a couple of weeks ago, whenever I made my first payment, and uh she's like, thanks.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: And it was a screenshot of 70 cents.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Thank you for what?
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Like, what did I do?
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: I don't, that's not our store points.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: She's like Kiva.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Oh, okay.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: I guess everybody gets a couple pennies here and there, but all right.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: That's it though.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, people take it.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: People just if you have excess capital, you can't take it to the grave.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: You're not actively looking to do something with that maybe a little bit uh too risky for you.
- 22:56SPEAKER_03: You don't have the desire to get into your own small business because you've been there, done that.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: What better way to leverage some of that wealth than to help people realize their dreams?
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: So it's it's a really cool program.
- 23:06SPEAKER_03: I think in today's age, 2026, I mean, we live in a world where you can tap into funding mechanisms all over the place and you just never know.
- 23:14SPEAKER_03: You know, that's so risky.
- 23:15SPEAKER_03: People have been very successful uh borrowing money traditionally, but they've been very successful too, finding financial assistance elsewhere.
- 23:23SPEAKER_03: So it is, I love entrepreneurial development.
- 23:25SPEAKER_03: It is by far the coolest part of our job, I think.
- 23:28SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Just because I owned a small business at one time and I remember having to park my truck behind a barn because it was gonna get repo'd because I was so far delinquent on the payments, and but you keep grinding.
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: And you know, granted, that business is now closed because I have the job I have now, but but for the tenacity and the desire to start that business and get involved in then the Clinton area chamber of commerce, uh, I would not have the position I have today.
- 23:54SPEAKER_03: So it's very cool.
- 23:55SPEAKER_03: Well, I'm so glad that you took advantage of the entrefield program in New Boco.
- 23:59SPEAKER_03: You know, we try to promote it the best we can.
- 24:01SPEAKER_03: Uh whether you have an established business and you're looking to scale it up, you just have a business idea, like you walk out of the shower one day and it just hits you like a bolt of lightning.
- 24:11SPEAKER_03: Allow us the opportunity to vet that before you start spending cash.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Please come in.
- 24:16SPEAKER_01: And also, Maria, you've got some special stuff coming up.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: So yes, okay.
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Uh so before the podcast started and you walked in, uh, I went ahead and I tried something this last week because every week is a new inventory case.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: And so uh I've been seeing it on TikTok, I've seen it on YouTube.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's all over.
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: And I follow a lot of warehouses like uh GPR, they're like in Michigan, Rapid City, and they sell their mystery boxes for$80,$80 mail to your door.
- 24:56SPEAKER_00: And that's only 10 items, and it might be overstock, it might be whatever.
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: I've watched, you know, people's videos.
- 25:04SPEAKER_00: Uh so my sister and I went to Oshkosh and I figured, you know what, we're gonna try this.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: And so I started staring at the palettes that had mail.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Now there's two different kinds of mail palettes out there.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: You've got your premium and then you just you have your regular.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: So it is literally mail.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Mail from the US Post Office.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: That has items in it.
- 25:30SPEAKER_00: It's not a letter, it's not someone's documents or anything like that, but it's in like a plastic bag, like your stuff would come to your house in.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And so uh it is returned, never been opened, is the premium.
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: So the customer was never found, didn't go to the post office to pick it up because they weren't home, whatever the reasoning is.
- 25:56SPEAKER_00: And so I said, oof, we're gonna try it.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: And it was a pricey little boy, and so we brought it back and we grabbed any box we had in the back, we started building boxes.
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: Um, Heather, my one employee, she's standing back there looking at all these packages with her eyes big.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: Like, at one point I went back to, I'm like, we're not opening nothing.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: That's the point.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: And the mystery is we don't even know.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: Like they're gonna open it, they get to have that fun.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Hopefully, they come back and tell us what awesome stuff they have.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: So I had boxes priced up to 60, if it depending on what we thought it's gonna be worth, because to kick it off, my sister and I came back with a box.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: I let my sister pick this box out at the warehouse.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: It is an$80 box from Amazon, and there was like six things.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: You can find it on our feed.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: And uh, so we opened it when we got back just to kind of advertise it so people understand what we were doing, but we're selling the mail mail, and uh, we were just getting whatever Amazon wanted to throw in a box.
- 27:08SPEAKER_00: And I was actually really disappointed with Amazon, but I mean that's part of the thrill.
- 27:13SPEAKER_00: It's like a lottery ticket, but you're actually still getting a little bit of something out of that lottery ticket, and so um they went really well.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Uh, if you go on my feed, you will see that one chick opened it, it was like her third or fourth box.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Like this, she's she's amazing.
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: She was on it.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: She came in with the hoodie on, it is a$350 hoodie.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: What?
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Yes, that she got out of one of our sixty dollar boxes.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: We had people get bags of tongue rings and rings and nose piercing rings, like bags of them.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: And one said they got a humidifier or dehumidifier, and they're like, My brother's been needing one.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and so she's like, I gave it to my brother.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: It was just so much fun opening it and finding it.
- 28:05SPEAKER_00: So this next week we're gonna hammer it out again.
- 28:08SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: So today we had a hundred boxes show up from Yuline with like a box of tape, lots of rolls of tape.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: And uh, so tomorrow we're gonna go up there, we're gonna get a premium, and then we're gonna get a regular.
- 28:23SPEAKER_00: The regular, it could have been opened, yeah, checked out, not liked, damaged, and sent.
- 28:28SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be a mixture.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: So I'm gonna, I'm not gonna price them 60 bucks, guys, but um we're thinking about$35,$40.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: We're gonna put on each box and let it roll.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: Let's see what happens.
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 28:43SPEAKER_00: Excellent.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Fun.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: Oh, I like it.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: It is fun.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, my kid back in the day, I mean, he used to watch YouTube videos of these people, these young kids that had way too much money because of their success on YouTube.
- 28:53SPEAKER_03: And they were buying like these, you know,$700,$800 mystery boxes of trading cards and things like that.
- 28:59SPEAKER_03: And then they would go through and they would see what they were able to get in this box.
- 29:04SPEAKER_01: Your son's an entrepreneur, though.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, I don't know about that.
- 29:08SPEAKER_03: If his business is cleaning, he's not gonna have to be there as well.
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: So uh well, thank you so much for everything that you've done.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: Thank you for investing in our community.
- 29:17SPEAKER_03: Thank you for getting the deal pit up and running.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: Again, if you want to scan that QR code in the top left-hand corner of this broadcast, if you're watching it, that'll take you to the deal pit's Facebook page.
- 29:26SPEAKER_03: If not, go to the facebook.com, just search the DealPit Clinton, and you'll be able to find their page.
- 29:31SPEAKER_03: Keep looking at that because that's where you post all of your inventory that's coming in.
- 29:35SPEAKER_00: Yes, uh, we give sneak peeks.
- 29:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, and we do sneak peeks either Thursday night or throughout on Friday.
- 29:43SPEAKER_00: So you know what's going to be there for the first picks for Saturday when we unlock that door at 8 a.m.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: 8 a.m.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: Saturday at 8 a.m.
- 29:50SPEAKER_03: and that's when nice.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: And what are what are your hours otherwise?
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: Is Saturday?
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: Um, right now we're playing with it.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Um so Saturday is eight to seven, and Sunday because everybody has different schedules, yeah.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: I mean, we all some have church.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: So um we did 10 to 7 for Sundays.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: Uh, because I got tired of staying there for three, four hours waiting for someone to walk through that door.
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: And we may scale the hours at night down, but otherwise it's eight to seven right now.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Very good.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Unless my girls are like, nobody's been here since four.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: It's six o'clock.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Can I go home?
- 30:30SPEAKER_00: Go home.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: Go home.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: Excellent.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: And again, you're located.
- 30:34SPEAKER_03: What's the official address?
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Uh 2712 South 25th Street, Clinton, Iowa.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: Can't miss it.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: It's right next to Maurice's Pizza Hut's in there.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: So uh New Age Therapies is in there.
- 30:46SPEAKER_00: Happy Dales.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so you can go check that out and enjoy because you never know what you're gonna find.
- 30:52SPEAKER_03: It's it's all the passion of the treasure hunt.
- 30:54SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: That's why it's called the colour.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: I would love to be a treasure hunter.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: You know, way back in the day, oh yeah, there was a marketing campaign that Canadian Club, Canadian Whiskey did, which you know that's my beverage of choice.
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: And they were basically selling opportunities to go on a treasure hunt because supposedly, as history tells, there was a ship that was full of Canadian club that sunk somewhere, and there were just barrels of whiskey that you could go and you could actually find, and you had to make these videos and send it in, and it was all a gimmick, right?
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: Nothing was really true, but it was fun.
- 31:28SPEAKER_03: It was fun.
- 31:29SPEAKER_03: Like it was cool to think that there was this lost ship just with hundreds of barrels of age Canadian whiskey.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and look at you walked away from that empty-handed, but you will not walk away empty-handed from the deal pit.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: So there you go.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: Yes, most definitely.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: Well, thank you so much for being on the show.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: Anything you need from us, do not hesitate to reach out.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: We'd love to have you back here whenever you like, but do go out there and visit the deal pit and continue to support small business here in Clinton.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Yes, please.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: Jenny.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: What's today?
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: Wednesday.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: Wednesday.
- 32:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, we got the rest of your week other than Oktoberfest.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: Busy, busy?
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: Actually, I've got to make a couple of calls and I'm I love doing that.
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: There, we've gotten some new members.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: I like to uh visit with them as well.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Visit, I've been doing a lot of retention calls where I go out and just say hi.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: We do a great job of that.
- 32:15SPEAKER_03: Because one of the things, you know, chambers of commerce, you know, technically what Grow Clinton is, is we always get dinged when somebody says, Oh, I haven't seen you or you haven't done anything.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: Well, we changed that narrative when we merged and became Grow Clinton.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, we want to make sure that our members, nearly 500 of them, continually to hear from us.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: And whether it's via email or text messaging or Jenny physically comes out and visit your location, just make sure if you need anything at all, you reach out to us because we're solving all sorts of problems these days.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: Happy to help.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: From potholes to multi-million dollar expansion projects.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: We got it all.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: We'll do it.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: Be sure to subscribe to the Grow Clinton Podcast if you have not done so already.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: And stay tuned for the launch of our app, the Grow Clinton Podcast app that will be available on the Apple store as well as the Google Play Store.

- 33:15SPEAKER_03: Yep, you know me.
- 33:16SPEAKER_03: Technology, I love it.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: I'm so glad I thought of that.
- 33:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you do you do so well, Jimmy.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 33:21SPEAKER_03: All right, everybody.
- 33:22SPEAKER_03: Until we speak again, stay classy.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: Let's see ya.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: Now I have this new outro thing.
