- 0:18and to guide you on your walk with God. And now,
- 0:22to lead us through today's journey, here is your
- 0:27host. Welcome to the Voices of Life, a ministry
- 0:34of the Church for Life. I'm Pastor David, and
- 0:37today we're stepping into a remarkable story
- 0:39of September 10th, a date that threads together
- 0:42the foundations of America, the courage of its
- 0:46defenders, the creativity of its inventors, the
- 0:49struggle for civil rights, the witness of faith,
- 0:54the workings of government. and even the frontiers
- 0:58of modern science from john smith fighting for
- 1:01survival at jamestown to oliver hazard perry
- 1:05turning the tide on lake erie to elias howe reshaping
- 1:09america's industry to canada stepping forward
- 1:13in world war ii to alabama's court order desegregation
- 1:16to pope john paul ii arriving in miami to opening
- 1:21of the clarence thomas hearings, and finally,
- 1:26the first beam racing through the Large Hadron
- 1:31Collider. September 10th reminds us that history
- 1:36is not random, it's purposeful. It is connected,
- 1:39and it continually calls us to reflect on the
- 1:42courage, conviction, and creativity that shapes
- 1:44our world. Let's go ahead and begin. In 1608,
- 1:48John Smith assumes leadership of Jamestown. so
- 1:52did you know september 10 1608 john smith became
- 1:55the president of jamestown's governing council
- 1:58jamestown founded only a year before was fighting
- 2:03for survival disease starvation poor sanitation
- 2:07internal conflict and strained relations with
- 2:10native communities threatened the entire settlement
- 2:13smith stepped up into the leadership with a simple
- 2:16priority survival he pushed colonists to grow
- 2:21food build structures and explore the region
- 2:24his writings later shaped england's understanding
- 2:28of virginia including the famous but historically
- 2:32disputed pocahontas rescue story september 10th
- 2:36marks a turning point in the first permanent
- 2:38english settlement in america now we move on
- 2:41to 1813 the battle of lake erie on september
- 2:4510 1813 during the war of 1812 American commander
- 2:49Oliver Hazard Perry faced the British fleet on
- 2:52Lake Erie. His flagship, the Lawrence, was devastated.
- 2:55Instead of surrendering, Perry transferred his
- 2:58flag to the Niagara and sailed straight into
- 3:03the British line. And he broke their formation.
- 3:06His victory message became immortal. We have
- 3:10met the enemy and they are ours. This battle
- 3:14gave the United States control of Lake Erie.
- 3:16and reversed the military situation in the northwest.
- 3:20It remains one of America's most celebrated naval
- 3:23victories. Moving on to 1846 and Elias Howe's
- 3:27patent on the sewing machine. On September 10,
- 3:301846, Elias Howe received U .S. Patent No. 4750
- 3:34for his improved sewing machine. He didn't invent
- 3:38the first sewing machine, but he perfected the
- 3:42lock stitch using two threads to create a strong
- 3:47mechanical stitch tailors initially feared that
- 3:51the machine would destroy their trade instead
- 3:54howe's invention helped launch a revolution in
- 3:57clothing textiles and industrial manufacturing
- 4:00this state marks a milestone in american innovation
- 4:05which later became the singer sewing machine
- 4:09company in 1939 canada declared war on germany
- 4:14So September 10, 1939, Canada made a historic
- 4:18decision. It declared war on Germany independently,
- 4:21rather than an automatically following Britain.
- 4:26This was a defining moment in Canada's constitutional
- 4:29maturity. The Royal Canadian Air Force records
- 4:33the declaration as a moment Canada formally entered
- 4:36World War II. On September 10, 1963, Alabama
- 4:40schools in Birmingham, Mobile, and Tuskegee began
- 4:45federally ordered desegregation. Governor George
- 4:47Wallace had resisted federal authority, but President
- 4:51Kennedy federalized the Alabama National Guard
- 4:53to enforce the law. Black students entered previously
- 4:57all -white schools amid protests and hostility.
- 5:01This moment stands within the larger civil rights
- 5:04struggle, showing the federal government's willingness
- 5:06to enforce constitutional rights when states
- 5:09resisted. On September 10, 1987, Pope John Paul
- 5:13II arrived in Miami, beginning a major apostolic
- 5:16journey through the United States and Canada.
- 5:19He was greeted by President Reagan, visited St.
- 5:22Mary Cathedral, and addressed South Florida's
- 5:24diverse Catholic community. The next day, nearly
- 5:27a quarter of a million people attended this mass
- 5:30at the Dade County Fairgrounds. For Miami's Cuban,
- 5:34Haitian, Caribbean, and Latin American communities,
- 5:37this visit became a defining spiritual moment.
- 5:41In 1987, I was living in Miami and I got to experience
- 5:44the visit from Pope John Paul II. I was on Biscayne
- 5:49Boulevard watching his parade and it was really,
- 5:52really great to see him visit. He was one of
- 5:55the popes that I connected with. Although not
- 5:57being Catholic, I found that the way he treated
- 6:02people, the way he addressed people, his agenda,
- 6:05I guess that's the only way to say it, was very
- 6:08compatible. And I think everybody in Miami didn't
- 6:13matter if you were Caucasian or Cuban or Haitian.
- 6:16That all didn't matter. And it didn't matter
- 6:19that you weren't Catholic. He connected with
- 6:22you. And that was the brilliance of Pope John
- 6:25Paul II. Sadly, I can't say that I've ever connected
- 6:28with another pope since. They didn't seem to
- 6:31have his charisma or his sense of justice. I
- 6:35guess that's the only way I can say it. really
- 6:38glad to have experienced that uh and that's what
- 6:41almost 40 years 39 years ago wow long time moving
- 6:45on 1991 clarence thomas's confirmation hearings
- 6:50begin so on september 10 1991 the senate judiciary
- 6:53committee opened hearings for the supreme court
- 6:56nominee clarence thomas it was chaired by senator
- 6:58joe biden who We just had his President Joe Biden.
- 7:03That was a Senator Joe Biden at the time that
- 7:05had all his faculties, not the President Joe
- 7:07Biden we unfortunately had a few years ago. The
- 7:12committee examined Thomas' judicial philosophy,
- 7:15civil rights backgrounds, and constitutional
- 7:18views. His testimony continued on September 11th.
- 7:21You have to remember Joe Biden was a Democrat
- 7:23and Clarence Thomas' was a very conservative
- 7:27person of course judges don't necessarily pick
- 7:29a party but what they have done in the past you
- 7:33know kind of you know he aligned more with the
- 7:34republican party than he did the democratic party
- 7:37and back then the democrats controlled congress
- 7:40they democrats controlled congress for decades
- 7:42so joe biden wield a lot of power as the senator
- 7:46just so uh i clarify that but the hearings later
- 7:49became one of the most controversial in american
- 7:51history But the opening day was the traditional
- 7:55review of the nominee's record. There was accusations
- 7:58from a lady named Anita Hill that there was some
- 8:01kind of sexual harassment. All that stuff. Anyway,
- 8:06it was all just smoke and mirrors. And at the
- 8:09end, he was confirmed. He's been one of our greatest
- 8:11Supreme Court justices. Can't say enough about
- 8:14Clarence Thomas. On September 10, 2008, CERN
- 8:18circulated the first proton beam through a large
- 8:23hadron collider, completing its 27 -kilometer
- 8:28loop at 1028 a .m. This marked the beginning
- 8:31of a new era in particle physics. The LHC would
- 8:36later help confirm the existence of Higgs -Boson,
- 8:39one of the most important scientific discoveries
- 8:42in the modern age. science is a fascinating thing
- 8:45and to learn about lasers and protons you know
- 8:49don't just let everybody else do it learn something
- 8:51about it get to know what it does if nothing
- 8:54else so someone comes back and says to you what
- 8:57are what are particle physics you can get from
- 8:59some kind of answer and have an understanding
- 9:02when it's reported on the news it's don't let
- 9:05every don't put everything on automatic you have
- 9:08to know a certain amount of information on everything
- 9:10because it affects you it affects your world
- 9:13As we close today's journey through September
- 9:1510th, I hope you've seen how each moment, whether
- 9:19born of struggle, innovation, leadership, or
- 9:22faith, reminds us that extraordinary story God
- 9:25is writing through human history. From Jamestown's
- 9:29fragile beginnings to the roar of cannon fire
- 9:32on Lake Erie, to the hum of Elias Howe's sewing
- 9:36machine, to the courage of students walking into
- 9:39newly integrated school, to the voice of a pope
- 9:42speaking hope in Miami, to the debates shaping
- 9:47the Supreme Court, and finally to the scientific
- 9:51breakthroughs that help us understand creation
- 9:53itself. Every chapter points us toward purpose.
- 9:58Thank you for joining me today on Voices of Life.
- 10:01May these stories inspire you. strengthen you,
- 10:05and remind you that every day carries meaning
- 10:07because every day is part of God's unfolding
- 10:10plan. I'm Pastor David. I'll see you next time.
- 10:13Thank you for joining us today on the Voices

- 10:19Life. As we close, may the stories we share strengthen
- 10:25your faith, steady your heart, and remind you
- 10:28that God is present in every chapter of your
- 10:30journey. If this episode encouraged you, Share
- 10:33it with someone who needs hope. And until we
- 10:35meet again, walk in truth, stand in courage,
- 10:39and keep listening for the voice that leads you
- 10:41forward. This has been Voices of Life. Peace
- 10:44be with you.
