- 0:16Speaker 1: the Epistle of Paul to the Galicians by Thomas Boston.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Chapter one, Verse one, Paul an apostle not of men,
- 0:25Speaker 1: neither by man, but by Jesus Christ and God, the
- 0:28Speaker 1: Father who raised him from the dead. Verse two. And
- 0:31Speaker 1: all the brethren which are with me unto the churches
- 0:34Speaker 1: of Galicia. Verse three, Grace be to you and peace
- 0:38Speaker 1: from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Paul an apostle, not an apostle of men, as an
- 0:44Speaker 1: ambassador of a state, but an apostle of the Great God,
- 0:48Speaker 1: And that not mediately by man as ordinary church officers,
- 0:53Speaker 1: but called thereunto immediately by God man Jesus Christ, and
- 0:57Speaker 1: by God the Father, who raised Christ from the dead,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and so gave an infallible testimony to the doctrine of Christ, who,
- 1:03Speaker 1: being raised from death, may as well be allowed to
- 1:06Speaker 1: send out me for an apostle, as he did others
- 1:09Speaker 1: while he was yet bodily present on the earth verse two.
- 1:13Speaker 1: And all the professors and ministers of the Church that
- 1:15Speaker 1: are with me at the writing hereof who do approve
- 1:18Speaker 1: of this my epistle to me dictated by the Spirit,
- 1:21Speaker 1: unto the congregations of the country Galicia, whom I still
- 1:24Speaker 1: hold for true churches, notwithstanding of the errors embraced by them.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Verse three. The good will and favor of God and
- 1:32Speaker 1: all sorts of true peace and prosperity be to you
- 1:34Speaker 1: from the Father as the fountain of all grace, and
- 1:37Speaker 1: from Christ, as the only conduit by which both flow
- 1:40Speaker 1: or can flow to sinners. Verse four. Who gave himself
- 1:44Speaker 1: for our sins, that he might deliver us from this
- 1:47Speaker 1: present evil world, according to the will of God and
- 1:50Speaker 1: our Father. Verse five, to whom be glory forever and
- 1:54Speaker 1: ever are men. Verse four, whom seeing I have named,
- 1:59Speaker 1: I cannot but commend the rather that we may see
- 2:02Speaker 1: we have so much in Him for our perfect happiness,
- 2:05Speaker 1: as that we need not look to our own works
- 2:07Speaker 1: for an eke. For he gave himself to the death
- 2:10Speaker 1: for expiating our sins, which cannot be but sufficient for
- 2:13Speaker 1: that end, and one great design of his dying for us,
- 2:16Speaker 1: was that He might deliver us from the snares which
- 2:19Speaker 1: the wicked men of this present world lay for us,
- 2:21Speaker 1: which is too sadly verified in your being ensnared by
- 2:24Speaker 1: the false teachers among you. This Christ did according to
- 2:27Speaker 1: the will and decree of the Father, who was concerned
- 2:30Speaker 1: for the redemption of the elect so that he gave
- 2:32Speaker 1: a commission to the Son for that purpose verse five.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And therefore let him have the glory of our redemption
- 2:39Speaker 1: by our lips and lives. And seeing time is not
- 2:42Speaker 1: sufficient for the work of his praise, let it be
- 2:44Speaker 1: echoed out of the Saint's mouths to all eternity. So
- 2:48Speaker 1: be it. Ver six. I marvel that ye are so
- 2:52Speaker 1: soon removed from Him that call you into the grace
- 2:55Speaker 1: of Christ, unto another gospel verse seven, which is not another.
- 2:59Speaker 1: But there be some that trouble you and would pervert
- 3:01Speaker 1: the Gospel of Christ. Verse six. I am surprised to
- 3:06Speaker 1: hear that ye are embracing the doctrine of the necessity
- 3:09Speaker 1: of the observation of Moses's law, and mixing the works
- 3:12Speaker 1: of the law, whether ceremonial or moral, with the righteousness
- 3:15Speaker 1: of Christ in point of justification, and to make way,
- 3:18Speaker 1: for that over the belly of the doctrine I taught you.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Ye hearken to false teachers, questioning my apostolic office and
- 3:25Speaker 1: suggesting that I had the doctrine of the gospel only
- 3:27Speaker 1: from a second hand, which I have since corrupted. I marvel,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I say that ye have embraced these doctrines, whereby you
- 3:33Speaker 1: making defection, being carried there to by others from God,
- 3:37Speaker 1: who by my ministry called you to Christ's gospel, the
- 3:40Speaker 1: gospel of free grace, are carried off, and that very suddenly,
- 3:44Speaker 1: which aggravates your sin, unto a pretended gospel for seven,
- 3:48Speaker 1: which is not a gospel at all, for it brings
- 3:50Speaker 1: bad instead of good news. But I cannot lay all
- 3:53Speaker 1: the blame on you. There are some among you who,
- 3:56Speaker 1: as winds do trouble waters. So they trouble your churches
- 3:59Speaker 1: by their new docs doctrine, stirring up divisions and bringing
- 4:02Speaker 1: many to that they know not what to believe or whom.
- 4:06Speaker 1: And they no less trouble your consciences, drawing you off
- 4:08Speaker 1: from the perfect righteousness of Christ, whereby it comes to
- 4:11Speaker 1: pass that ye can never have solid peace within. And
- 4:14Speaker 1: they would overturn the gospel, setting up a doctrine inconsistent
- 4:17Speaker 1: with the doctrine of the Gospel. Verse eight. But though
- 4:21Speaker 1: we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel
- 4:24Speaker 1: unto you than that which we have preached unto you,
- 4:27Speaker 1: let him be accursed. Verse eight. But so fully am
- 4:31Speaker 1: I persuaded of the truth of the doctrine I have
- 4:33Speaker 1: preached to you, and of the perfection and sufficiency of
- 4:36Speaker 1: it for true happiness, that I doubt not to anathematize
- 4:40Speaker 1: and declare separated from Christ, a cursed of God, and
- 4:43Speaker 1: to be destroyed myself, or an angel from heaven, and
- 4:46Speaker 1: declare separated from Christ, a cursed of God, and to
- 4:49Speaker 1: be destroyed myself or an angel from heaven, if either
- 4:52Speaker 1: of us should preach another gospel way of justification or
- 4:55Speaker 1: salvation verse nine. As we said before, so I say
- 4:59Speaker 1: now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto
- 5:02Speaker 1: you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Verse nine. It is not my passion and unruly rage
- 5:10Speaker 1: that makes me talk thus, but my zeal for God.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And therefore with all soberness I denounce the same against
- 5:16Speaker 1: any man that shall adventure so to do. Ye formerly
- 5:19Speaker 1: receive the very same doctrine that I preached. And therefore
- 5:22Speaker 1: so let it be to him who preaches what is
- 5:24Speaker 1: inconsistent with your former principles Verse ten. For do I
- 5:29Speaker 1: now persuade men or God? Or do I seek to
- 5:31Speaker 1: please men? For if I yet pleased men, I should
- 5:34Speaker 1: not be the servant of Christ. Verse ten. Wonder not
- 5:38Speaker 1: I am so bold in devoting to a curse those
- 5:40Speaker 1: that preach other doctrine than I. For though when I
- 5:43Speaker 1: was a pharisee, I persuaded people to hear and follow
- 5:45Speaker 1: the dictates of men, which humor yet remains with your teachers.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Yet now my only business is to persuade men to
- 5:52Speaker 1: hear and follow the dictates of God himself, so that
- 5:55Speaker 1: it is God's cause, not my own or men's. Neither
- 5:58Speaker 1: do I seek to humor men, as those teachers of
- 6:00Speaker 1: yours bend their doctrine to curry favor with the Jews,
- 6:03Speaker 1: which was my own way in the time of my blindness.
- 6:06Speaker 1: But if that were my way, still I should not
- 6:08Speaker 1: be about Christ's work, and so I should be not
- 6:11Speaker 1: the servant of Christ but of men. Verse eleven. But
- 6:16Speaker 1: I certify you, brethren that the gospel which was preached
- 6:18Speaker 1: of me is not after man verse eleven. But I
- 6:22Speaker 1: am the servant of Christ. For I assure you the
- 6:24Speaker 1: doctrine I preached to you was not from earth, but
- 6:26Speaker 1: from Heaven verse twelve. For I neither received it of man,
- 6:31Speaker 1: neither was I taught it but by the revelation of
- 6:33Speaker 1: Jesus Christ verse twelve. For I neither received it from
- 6:38Speaker 1: men as the authors of it. Though men would be
- 6:40Speaker 1: found the highest spring of the new doctrine among you,
- 6:43Speaker 1: if ye would impartially examine the author of it. Neither
- 6:46Speaker 1: was I taught it mediately by the help of any
- 6:49Speaker 1: apostle or other man, as some allege. But I had
- 6:52Speaker 1: it by immediate revelation from Jesus Christ at the time
- 6:55Speaker 1: of my conversion verse thirteen. For ye have heard of
- 6:59Speaker 1: my conversation in time past in the Jews religion, how
- 7:03Speaker 1: that beyond measure, I persecuted the Church of God and
- 7:05Speaker 1: wasted it verse fourteen. And I profited in the Jews
- 7:10Speaker 1: religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being
- 7:13Speaker 1: more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my father's verse thirteen,
- 7:19Speaker 1: the truth of which will convincingly appear from a short
- 7:22Speaker 1: history of my life. For ye have heard of my
- 7:24Speaker 1: former conversation while I was a Jew, and I grudge
- 7:27Speaker 1: not to confess it to my own shame and God's glory.
- 7:30Speaker 1: How I was an eminent persecutor of the Church, and
- 7:33Speaker 1: like an enemy going through a land with fire and sword,
- 7:36Speaker 1: leaving nothing but desolations behind him. So I wasted the church,
- 7:40Speaker 1: getting some killed, others scattered verse fourteen. And I wanted
- 7:45Speaker 1: not parts to my hostile mind. For though I shall
- 7:47Speaker 1: not say I profited more in the Jewish religion than
- 7:50Speaker 1: those that were elder than myself, or than all those
- 7:53Speaker 1: that were of the same standing with me, or those
- 7:55Speaker 1: in other nations, yet I may, without breach of modesty,
- 7:58Speaker 1: say that I will more learned in Judaism than many
- 8:01Speaker 1: of my standing in mine own nation, and the worst
- 8:04Speaker 1: part of that religion, even unwritten traditions, to which Christ
- 8:07Speaker 1: were a great enemy. I bestowed the cream of my zeal,
- 8:10Speaker 1: upon which zeal had arrived to an exceeding high pitch
- 8:14Speaker 1: verse fifteen. But when it pleased God, who separated me
- 8:18Speaker 1: from my mother's womb and called me by his grace
- 8:20Speaker 1: verse sixteen, to reveal his son in me, that I
- 8:23Speaker 1: might preach him among the Heathen, immediately I conferred not
- 8:26Speaker 1: with flesh and blood verse seventeen. Neither went I up
- 8:29Speaker 1: to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me. But
- 8:32Speaker 1: I went into Arabia and returned again unto Damascus Verses fifteen, sixteen,
- 8:37Speaker 1: and seventeen. Yet, notwithstanding all this, when the time appointed
- 8:41Speaker 1: of God for my conversion came, and it pleased God,
- 8:44Speaker 1: who from my mother's womb had separated me to the
- 8:46Speaker 1: apostolic office, in so far as his providence had from
- 8:49Speaker 1: that time been secretly working to shape me out for
- 8:52Speaker 1: the work bringing me into the world by such parents,
- 8:55Speaker 1: giving me a healthful constitution and the benefit of human learning,
- 8:59Speaker 1: who also, by his powerful and overcoming grace, called me
- 9:01Speaker 1: to himself, who had been running away from him. When
- 9:04Speaker 1: it pleased him, I say, to give me the saving
- 9:07Speaker 1: knowledge of Christ, which, in an extraordinary way, without the
- 9:10Speaker 1: preached word, did immediately break into my soul. To the
- 9:13Speaker 1: end I might not only be saved there by myself,
- 9:16Speaker 1: but might preach the same Christ unto the heathen world.
- 9:19Speaker 1: Then I was so persuaded of the divinity of the
- 9:21Speaker 1: doctrine revealed, and so clear as to my call to
- 9:24Speaker 1: the ministry, that I would not consult mine own reason,
- 9:27Speaker 1: nor any man whatsoever as to my duty. In this case.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Neither did I return from Damascus to Jerusalem to meet
- 9:33Speaker 1: with the other apostles, to get a permission from them
- 9:35Speaker 1: to preach, or to get my call confirmed by them,
- 9:38Speaker 1: but without disputing the call of God. Having first stayed
- 9:41Speaker 1: certain days in Damascus and preached Acts nine nineteen to
- 9:45Speaker 1: twenty two, I went not without great hazard and pains,
- 9:48Speaker 1: to preach to the Heathen Arabians, and return from Arabia afterwards,
- 9:52Speaker 1: and came to Damascus Acts nine twenty three, verse eighteen. Then,
- 9:58Speaker 1: after three years after my canas, I went up from
- 10:01Speaker 1: Damascus to Jerusalem to make a visit to Peter, not
- 10:04Speaker 1: to learn anything from him, but to give a testimony
- 10:06Speaker 1: of agreement in the same doctrine, he being the great
- 10:09Speaker 1: Apostle of the Jews, and I of the Gentiles. And
- 10:12Speaker 1: it was but short time I abode with him, so
- 10:14Speaker 1: that I had not time to learn verse nineteen. But
- 10:19Speaker 1: other of the apostles I saw none save James, the
- 10:21Speaker 1: Lord's brother verse nineteen. Neither learned I of the rest
- 10:25Speaker 1: of the apostles, for I saw none of them but James,
- 10:28Speaker 1: our Lord's kinsmen according to the flesh verse twenty. Now
- 10:32Speaker 1: the things which I write unto you behold before God.
- 10:34Speaker 1: I lie not verse twenty Now as to the truth
- 10:38Speaker 1: of these things, seeing God's glory and your edification requires it,
- 10:42Speaker 1: I confirm it by an oath, declaring before God as
- 10:44Speaker 1: a judge and witness in the matter, that I am
- 10:46Speaker 1: speaking nothing but truth verse twenty one. Afterwards, I came
- 10:51Speaker 1: into the regions of Syria and Celicia verse twenty two,
- 10:55Speaker 1: and was unknown by face unto the churches of Judea,
- 10:58Speaker 1: which were in christ first twenty three. But they had
- 11:02Speaker 1: heard only that He which persecuted us in times past
- 11:05Speaker 1: now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed verse twenty four,
- 11:09Speaker 1: and they glorified God in me verse twenty one. Afterwards,
- 11:13Speaker 1: I came into the regions of Syria, and particularly into Cilicia,
- 11:17Speaker 1: my native country, and preached the Gospel there verse twenty two.
- 11:21Speaker 1: And though the Christian churches in Judea, visible members of
- 11:24Speaker 1: Christ's body, were not acquainted with me, having been but
- 11:27Speaker 1: occasionally sometimes in Jerusalem, and made no considerable stay, and
- 11:30Speaker 1: having made it my business familiarly to converse with those
- 11:34Speaker 1: of my own charge, rather than them to whom I
- 11:36Speaker 1: had not such a special relation verse twenty three. Yet,
- 11:40Speaker 1: when they heard the news of my conversion and of
- 11:42Speaker 1: my preaching that doctrine which once I endeavored to destroy
- 11:45Speaker 1: by persecuting the professors thereof verse twenty four, they acknowledged
- 11:49Speaker 1: the mercy and power of God appearing in his dealing
- 11:51Speaker 1: with me and by me, and considering me as a
- 11:54Speaker 1: convert and successful preacher, they gave God glory upon my account.
- 11:59Speaker 1: End of chapter one, chapter two of a paraphrase upon
- 12:09Speaker 1: the Epistle of Paul to the Galatians by Thomas Boston.
- 12:12Speaker 1: This LibriVox recording is in the public domain. Chapter two,
- 12:18Speaker 1: verse one. Then fourteen years after I went up again
- 12:22Speaker 1: to Jerusalem with Barnabas and took Titus with me also
- 12:27Speaker 1: verse one. Then fourteen years after my conversion, I made
- 12:31Speaker 1: another journey to Jerusalem with barnabas my ordinary companion in
- 12:35Speaker 1: my travels, and I took Titus the evangelist with me,
- 12:38Speaker 1: also as two witnesses which might testify to the apostles
- 12:42Speaker 1: at Jerusalem. What doctrine I preached amongst the gentiles, and
- 12:46Speaker 1: with what success and visible seals of my ministry? And
- 12:50Speaker 1: who might also testify again to the gentiles what should
- 12:54Speaker 1: pass in the designed conferences. Verse two, and I went
- 12:59Speaker 1: up up by revelation and communicated unto them that gospel
- 13:03Speaker 1: which I preach among the gentiles, but privately to them
- 13:06Speaker 1: which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run,
- 13:09Speaker 1: or had run in vain. Verse two. And I went
- 13:14Speaker 1: up by an impulse of the spirit of God, revealing
- 13:17Speaker 1: that particular to be my duty. And when I came
- 13:21Speaker 1: there in a friendly and familiar way, I declared to
- 13:24Speaker 1: the churches of Judea the gospel and doctrine which at
- 13:27Speaker 1: this present I preach. For I preach no other doctrine
- 13:30Speaker 1: now than what I always preached, since I was an apostle.
- 13:34Speaker 1: But Christian prudence obliged me not to give this declaration
- 13:38Speaker 1: of my doctrine presently before the whole multitude, lest unnecessary
- 13:42Speaker 1: scruples and debates might be raised amongst the vulgar. Nay,
- 13:45Speaker 1: this declaration I thought necessary to make, not to any
- 13:48Speaker 1: of the apostles, but those who were of greatest reputation
- 13:52Speaker 1: in the Church. And the great design of my entering
- 13:54Speaker 1: upon this conference with them was to preserve the fruit
- 13:57Speaker 1: of my preaching in time past and to securate for
- 14:00Speaker 1: the time to come. For if once that had obtained
- 14:04Speaker 1: amongst the gentiles that I preached other doctrine than the
- 14:07Speaker 1: chief Apostles, my labors in the Gospel would have been lost,
- 14:10Speaker 1: both for the time passed and the time to come
- 14:14Speaker 1: verse three. But neither Titus, who was with me, being
- 14:17Speaker 1: a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised verse four. And
- 14:21Speaker 1: that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came
- 14:25Speaker 1: in privily to spy out our liberty which we have
- 14:27Speaker 1: in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage
- 14:31Speaker 1: verse three. But in that meeting Titus, an uncircumcised Greek,
- 14:36Speaker 1: was freely admitted to the Apostles society. And so far
- 14:40Speaker 1: were they against the necessity of the observation of the
- 14:43Speaker 1: ceremonial law, that they did not require him to be circumcised,
- 14:47Speaker 1: which they would certainly have done had they thought that
- 14:49Speaker 1: circumcision was necessary to be observed verse four. And in
- 14:54Speaker 1: this particular case they did thus carry not because they
- 14:58Speaker 1: thought that circumcision was yet simply unlawful, but because they
- 15:01Speaker 1: would not give an occasion of triumphing to some false
- 15:03Speaker 1: brethren who held the necessity of observing the ceremonial law,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and who had been brought into this meeting without the
- 15:10Speaker 1: apostles knowledge, and came into it not with any good design,
- 15:13Speaker 1: but as so many spies, to spy out our Christian
- 15:17Speaker 1: liberty and to rob us of it and bring us
- 15:20Speaker 1: again under the bondage of the ceremonial law. For if
- 15:23Speaker 1: Titus had been circumcised here, they would have made use
- 15:26Speaker 1: of that practice as a certain confirmation of the necessity
- 15:30Speaker 1: of circumcision and the observing of the whole ceremonial law
- 15:34Speaker 1: verse five, to whom we gave place by subjection. No,
- 15:39Speaker 1: not for an hour, that the truth of the Gospel
- 15:41Speaker 1: might continue with you verse five. But being aware of
- 15:45Speaker 1: this their design, we the rest of the apostles at
- 15:48Speaker 1: the meeting, and I would not subject our Christian liberty
- 15:51Speaker 1: to them, nor yield to them in that point. No,
- 15:55Speaker 1: not in using circumcision, but that once. The reason of
- 15:59Speaker 1: our stiffness in this was that the doctrine of the
- 16:01Speaker 1: Gospel might remain with Ugullatians and other gentiles, pure and uncorrupted,
- 16:06Speaker 1: and not mixed with Jewish leaven. For had they got
- 16:09Speaker 1: their will in this particular, they would have had a
- 16:12Speaker 1: specious pretense against Christian liberty. Ver six. But of these
- 16:17Speaker 1: who seemed to be somewhat whatsoever they were, it maketh
- 16:20Speaker 1: no matter to me. God accepteth no man's person, For
- 16:24Speaker 1: they who seemed to be somewhat in conference, added nothing
- 16:28Speaker 1: to me verse seven. But contrariwise, when they saw that
- 16:32Speaker 1: the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as
- 16:36Speaker 1: the Gospel of the Circumcision was unto Peter verse eight.
- 16:40Speaker 1: For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship
- 16:43Speaker 1: of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me towards
- 16:45Speaker 1: the Gentiles verse nine. And when James, Cephus and John,
- 16:50Speaker 1: who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was
- 16:53Speaker 1: given unto me, they gave unto me and barnabas the
- 16:56Speaker 1: right hands of fellowship, that we should go unto the heathen,
- 16:59Speaker 1: and they un to the circumcision. For six. But of
- 17:04Speaker 1: the apostles of greatest credit, in comparison of whom I
- 17:07Speaker 1: am despised by some as nothing in comparison of them,
- 17:10Speaker 1: I indeed learned nothing, say not, they were apostles before
- 17:14Speaker 1: me and had seen Christ in the flesh. And therefore
- 17:17Speaker 1: I am nothing in comparison of them, whatever advantages they
- 17:20Speaker 1: had of me, I notice not neither does God judge
- 17:23Speaker 1: of men according to these external things. I am an
- 17:26Speaker 1: apostle now as well as they, and preach the Gospel
- 17:29Speaker 1: as well as they. I do not deny, but they
- 17:31Speaker 1: have these advantages of me. But that is nothing to
- 17:35Speaker 1: the matter in hand. Their having them makes not my
- 17:37Speaker 1: office nor my doctrine less divine than theirs. For in
- 17:41Speaker 1: conference about our calls and doctrine they added nothing to me.
- 17:45Speaker 1: They found no error to correct, nor defect in my
- 17:48Speaker 1: doctrine or call to make up for seven and nine.
- 17:52Speaker 1: But indeed they were so far from adding anything to
- 17:55Speaker 1: me that they forthwith gave me the right hand of
- 17:58Speaker 1: fellowship when they saw by my undoubted evidence that God
- 18:01Speaker 1: had committed to me the dispensation of the Gospel as
- 18:04Speaker 1: a rich treasure unto the Gentiles, even as he had
- 18:08Speaker 1: committed to Peter the dispensing of the Gospel unto the Jews.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Verse eight. This They clearly understood from this that the
- 18:15Speaker 1: same God who had given his assistance to Peter and
- 18:18Speaker 1: had made use of him as a blessed instrument in
- 18:20Speaker 1: his hand to the conversion of the Jews, by his
- 18:23Speaker 1: overcoming grace, had done no less by me towards the Gentiles,
- 18:27Speaker 1: whose conversion they looked upon as a seal of my
- 18:29Speaker 1: apostleship verse nine. And when James, Peter, and John, who
- 18:34Speaker 1: were reputed the upholders of the church under God, perceived
- 18:37Speaker 1: the gifts ordinary and extraordinary, wherewith God had fitted me
- 18:41Speaker 1: for the apostolic office. When I say they saw my
- 18:45Speaker 1: call to the work and my gifts fitting me for it,
- 18:48Speaker 1: they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship,
- 18:51Speaker 1: shaking hands with us in token of our agreement in
- 18:54Speaker 1: doctrine and amicably dividing of our charges for carrying on
- 18:58Speaker 1: the work of our common Master, that they might go
- 19:00Speaker 1: on to preach for ordinary to the Jews and we
- 19:04Speaker 1: to the Gentiles verse ten. Only they would that we
- 19:09Speaker 1: should remember the poor, the same which I also was
- 19:12Speaker 1: forward to do. Verse ten. Only they desired Barnabas and
- 19:16Speaker 1: Me to make a collection through the Gentile churches for
- 19:20Speaker 1: the relief of the poor Jews who returned Christians, which
- 19:23Speaker 1: I did with all diligence study to make effectual Verse eleven.
- 19:28Speaker 1: But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him
- 19:31Speaker 1: to the face because he was to be blamed verse eleven.
- 19:35Speaker 1: But when Peter, some time after this conference, was come
- 19:38Speaker 1: to Antioch, where was a church of the Gentiles, using
- 19:41Speaker 1: their Christian liberty, I freely and boldly to his face
- 19:44Speaker 1: opposed him, because he was indeed blameworthy verse twelve. For
- 19:50Speaker 1: before that certain came from James, he did eat with
- 19:53Speaker 1: the Gentiles. But when they were come, he withdrew and
- 19:57Speaker 1: separated himself, fearing them which were of the s circumcision.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Verse twelve. For he did make use of his Christian liberty,
- 20:06Speaker 1: freely eating with the Christian gentiles, having no regard to
- 20:10Speaker 1: the difference of meats, nor of Jews and Gentiles established
- 20:14Speaker 1: by the ceremonial law. This liberty I say he used
- 20:18Speaker 1: all the time he was in Antioch, before the coming
- 20:20Speaker 1: down of certain Jews from Jerusalem, where James had his
- 20:24Speaker 1: ordinary residence, which Jews were zealous for the observing of
- 20:27Speaker 1: the ceremonial law. But when they came, Peter withdrew from
- 20:31Speaker 1: the gentile and uncircumcised Christians, would not keep up fellowship
- 20:35Speaker 1: with them, but set up a separate meeting from the
- 20:37Speaker 1: uncircumcised Christians, to which offensive course he was led by
- 20:41Speaker 1: a preposterous fear of those bigoted Jews, lest they should
- 20:45Speaker 1: have been offended by his liberty verse thirteen. And the
- 20:49Speaker 1: other Jews dissembled likewise with him, in so much that
- 20:52Speaker 1: Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation Verse thirteen.
- 20:58Speaker 1: This was great dissimulation. Peter to assert by his practice
- 21:02Speaker 1: the necessity of observing the ceremonial law, which he knew,
- 21:05Speaker 1: notwithstanding by divine revelation, was now of no force Acts
- 21:10Speaker 1: ten and eleven. And the other Jews, who had before
- 21:13Speaker 1: used Christian liberty, they fell into the same dissimulation. And
- 21:17Speaker 1: such was the speed at that time that even Barnabas
- 21:20Speaker 1: himself was not able to withstand his and their example.
- 21:23Speaker 1: But he dissembled also, withdrawing and separating himself verse fourteen.
- 21:30Speaker 1: But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according
- 21:33Speaker 1: to the truth of the Gospel, I said unto Peter
- 21:35Speaker 1: before them all, if thou, being a Jew, livest after
- 21:38Speaker 1: the manner of gentiles, and not as to the Jews,
- 21:42Speaker 1: why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the
- 21:44Speaker 1: Jews verse fifteen, we who are Jews by nature and
- 21:49Speaker 1: not sinners of the gentiles. For sixteen, knowing that a
- 21:52Speaker 1: man is not justified by the works of the law,
- 21:55Speaker 1: but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have
- 21:58Speaker 1: believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by
- 22:01Speaker 1: the faith of Christ, and not by the works of
- 22:03Speaker 1: the law. For by the works of the law shall
- 22:05Speaker 1: no flesh be justified. Verse fourteen. But when I saw
- 22:10Speaker 1: their practice crooked and contrary to the doctrine of the Gospel,
- 22:13Speaker 1: in this point I said unto Peter, before all the
- 22:15Speaker 1: rest carried off by his bad example. Seeing thou thyself,
- 22:20Speaker 1: though a Jew, and so bound if any were to
- 22:23Speaker 1: observe the ceremonial law, yet dost not observe it but
- 22:27Speaker 1: for ordinary livest after the manner of the gentiles, making
- 22:30Speaker 1: no difference of meats clean or unclean, as appears by
- 22:33Speaker 1: thy former practice in this place, How canst thou force
- 22:36Speaker 1: upon the necks of the gentiles that yoke which thou
- 22:39Speaker 1: thyself hast cast off by your separating from the gentiles
- 22:42Speaker 1: on this account, thereby obliging them either to embrace the
- 22:46Speaker 1: ceremonial law, or else to be deprived of fellowship with
- 22:49Speaker 1: you and your adherents verse fifteen. And now to fall
- 22:54Speaker 1: upon the main point, ye may observe Ogallatians from the
- 22:57Speaker 1: history of Peter's carriage, particularly before these Zealos came from Jerusalem,
- 23:01Speaker 1: and from my reproving him and his not defending the
- 23:04Speaker 1: fact that we who are born Jews and not of
- 23:06Speaker 1: the profane nations, without God's covenant, We to whom the
- 23:09Speaker 1: ceremonial and judicial laws were given, particularly, and who received
- 23:13Speaker 1: the Decalogue upon Mount SINAI that we I say verse sixteen,
- 23:17Speaker 1: being persuaded in our consciences, that no man circumcised or uncircumcised,
- 23:22Speaker 1: is declared or reputed righteous before God upon the account
- 23:26Speaker 1: of his own works done in obedience to the law
- 23:28Speaker 1: of God, ceremonial, judicial, or moral, but by faith in Christ,
- 23:33Speaker 1: receiving Him and his righteousness. Even we, who, if any,
- 23:37Speaker 1: might have pursued a law righteousness, have renounced our own
- 23:41Speaker 1: works for justification, and have by faith betaken ourselves to
- 23:45Speaker 1: Christ for a righteousness, that so we might be justified
- 23:48Speaker 1: by faith in Christ and not by works. And with
- 23:51Speaker 1: what confidence then can the gentiles seek righteousness by works
- 23:55Speaker 1: of the Law, a great part of which was designed
- 23:57Speaker 1: only for us Jews. Now that we have done so,
- 24:01Speaker 1: ye see as plain, and that we might and ought
- 24:04Speaker 1: to have done so, And you also is plain from
- 24:07Speaker 1: the Old Testament, which testifies that by the works of
- 24:10Speaker 1: the Law, no man, Jew or gentile can be justified
- 24:13Speaker 1: before God Psalm one hundred and forty three two, verse seventeen.
- 24:19Speaker 1: But if while we seek to be justified by Christ,
- 24:21Speaker 1: we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the
- 24:25Speaker 1: minister of sin? God forbid Verse seventeen. Ye will readily
- 24:31Speaker 1: object that our doctrine has little advantage. By what I
- 24:34Speaker 1: have narrated of Peter and others there observing the ceremonial
- 24:37Speaker 1: law over the belly of their light. It seems they
- 24:40Speaker 1: have learnt that art of gross dissimulation at the school
- 24:43Speaker 1: of your Gospel. But I say, what, though we ourselves
- 24:47Speaker 1: have been found sinners and gross dissemblers, we I say
- 24:51Speaker 1: that know our freedom from the law, and that there
- 24:54Speaker 1: is no justification by the law, even then while we
- 24:57Speaker 1: were seeking justification by Christ. That therefore follow that the
- 25:01Speaker 1: doctrine of the Gospel, burying the ceremonial law teaches men
- 25:05Speaker 1: to sin, God forbid verse eighteen. For if I build
- 25:11Speaker 1: again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a
- 25:13Speaker 1: transgressor Verse nineteen. For I through the law, am dead
- 25:18Speaker 1: to the Law, that I might live unto God. Verse eighteen.
- 25:23Speaker 1: For if I, or Peter or any man do by
- 25:26Speaker 1: our practice build up again, the sin which we have
- 25:28Speaker 1: destroyed by our doctrine and practice can form thereunto in
- 25:32Speaker 1: that case we ourselves or to hold out this supposition
- 25:35Speaker 1: in my own person, I am the transgressor who should
- 25:39Speaker 1: be blamed, and not the Gospel which I preach. This
- 25:42Speaker 1: is clear if ye consider verse nineteen, that the Gospel
- 25:45Speaker 1: natively tends to my leading a holy life, and the
- 25:48Speaker 1: Gospel is not to be blamed for my sinful slips.
- 25:52Speaker 1: For I am now dead to the Law, and look
- 25:55Speaker 1: upon the relation betwixt it and me as ceased. Not
- 25:58Speaker 1: that I may live as I list, but that I
- 26:01Speaker 1: may live to God in the duties of obedience and
- 26:03Speaker 1: thankfulness to God. And this is what the Gospel teacheth me.
- 26:07Speaker 1: And to this actual death to the Law. I was
- 26:09Speaker 1: brought by the Law itself, which proved such a rigorous
- 26:12Speaker 1: husband to my conscience that it would be satisfied with
- 26:15Speaker 1: nothing I could do, which necessitated me to give over
- 26:18Speaker 1: thoughts of ever pleasing it, and so to betake myself
- 26:21Speaker 1: to my new husband Christ Verse twenty. I am crucified
- 26:26Speaker 1: with Christ. Nevertheless I live. Yet not I, but Christ
- 26:30Speaker 1: liveth in me and the life which I now live
- 26:33Speaker 1: in the flesh. I live by the faith of the
- 26:35Speaker 1: Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for
- 26:39Speaker 1: me Verse twenty. Yet have I done the law no injury,
- 26:43Speaker 1: but I am dead to it in point of right.
- 26:46Speaker 1: For by faith I am crucified in the person of Christ,
- 26:49Speaker 1: my head and representative, so that the law, having got
- 26:52Speaker 1: all it could demand, it has no more to crave
- 26:55Speaker 1: of me than it has of Christ. But notwithstanding of
- 26:58Speaker 1: this crucifixion, I am alive life. I live to God.
- 27:01Speaker 1: But no thanks to me for this life. I have it,
- 27:04Speaker 1: not but because of my union with Christ, who is
- 27:07Speaker 1: the soul of my soul and the vital principle in me,
- 27:11Speaker 1: and that life of sanctification which I now live. While
- 27:13Speaker 1: I am in this mortal body, I live by faith
- 27:16Speaker 1: in the Son of God, by which I draw vital
- 27:19Speaker 1: influences from Him. The fountain of life, who loved me
- 27:22Speaker 1: with an everlasting love, and from that undeserved love, was
- 27:25Speaker 1: pleased to give himself to the death for me, that
- 27:28Speaker 1: by his dying I might live. Verse twenty one. I
- 27:33Speaker 1: do not frustrate the grace of God, for if righteousness
- 27:35Speaker 1: come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Verse twenty one. I think this was wonderful love. And
- 27:42Speaker 1: I do therefore endeavor to make a suitable return, lipening
- 27:46Speaker 1: my salvation to the death of Christ, and to that only.
- 27:50Speaker 1: And so I do not render God's grace in sending
- 27:53Speaker 1: Christ to die for me vain. If I should do otherwise,
- 27:57Speaker 1: I should make it a vain needless thing. For if
- 27:59Speaker 1: our righteousness be by our works, for what end did
- 28:03Speaker 1: Christ die for us? End of chapter two, Chapter three
- 28:14Speaker 1: of a paraphrase upon the Epistle of Paul to the
- 28:16Speaker 1: Galatians by Thomas Boston. This LibriVox recording is in the
- 28:20Speaker 1: public domain. Chapter three, Verse one, Oh foolish Galatians, who
- 28:27Speaker 1: hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth
- 28:30Speaker 1: before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth
- 28:34Speaker 1: crucified among you, Oh foolish Galatians, What devilish artist has
- 28:38Speaker 1: deluded your spiritual senses and cast mist before your eyes
- 28:42Speaker 1: to dazzle them and make things appear which you do
- 28:45Speaker 1: not indeed see, so that you do not obey the
- 28:47Speaker 1: commanding light of the truth of the Gospel, in which
- 28:51Speaker 1: ye are most inexcusable. Seeing by my ministry the doctrine
- 28:54Speaker 1: of Christ was as evidently preached to you as if
- 28:57Speaker 1: the mystery of Christ had been painted on a board
- 29:00Speaker 1: for your eyes, and He had been crucified again amongst
- 29:03Speaker 1: you Verse two. This only would I learn of you
- 29:07Speaker 1: received ye the spirit by the works of the law
- 29:10Speaker 1: or by the hearing of faith? Verse three? Are ye
- 29:14Speaker 1: so foolish? Having begun in the spirit? Are ye now
- 29:16Speaker 1: made perfect by the flesh? Verse four? Have ye suffered
- 29:20Speaker 1: so many things in vain? If it be yet in vain?
- 29:25Speaker 1: Verse two, ye are very fond of the doctrine of
- 29:28Speaker 1: justification by works. But pray you tell me this one thing.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Ye have received the Spirit of God to dwell in
- 29:34Speaker 1: you as the principle of saving grace and miraculous operations,
- 29:38Speaker 1: according to the promise thereof in the prophets. But whether
- 29:41Speaker 1: did you receive the spirit by the doctrine continually buzzing
- 29:44Speaker 1: in your ears the works of the law, or by
- 29:47Speaker 1: the doctrine of faith in Christ, which ye heard. Your
- 29:50Speaker 1: own consciences will tell you it was the latter, not
- 29:53Speaker 1: the former way. And is it possible that the doctrine
- 29:56Speaker 1: should be false? By which God communicated to you his
- 29:59Speaker 1: spirit Verse three. Wonderful folly. When ye first embrace Christianity,
- 30:04Speaker 1: ye received the Spirit of God, which, as a seal
- 30:07Speaker 1: of the truth of that doctrine ye heard, taught you
- 30:10Speaker 1: to look for justification by faith alone, so that it
- 30:13Speaker 1: must be indwelling corruption that sets up for another way.
- 30:17Speaker 1: And what more unworthy of a wise man than to
- 30:19Speaker 1: think the spirit began the work, But corruption must give
- 30:23Speaker 1: at the finishing stroke and teach you a doctrine better,
- 30:26Speaker 1: though contrary to that which the Spirit sealed Verse four.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I know ye suffered many hard things for adhering to
- 30:33Speaker 1: the Gospel doctrine, especially by the Jews, whose rage was
- 30:37Speaker 1: kindled to raise persecution against the Christians, because they thought
- 30:40Speaker 1: the Gospel was destructive of the law. And have ye
- 30:43Speaker 1: even suffered all these things in vain so as to
- 30:46Speaker 1: lose the reward by your after disowning of the truth,
- 30:49Speaker 1: Ye suffered for Shall I say ye have suffered in vain?
- 30:53Speaker 1: I would fain hope. Yet it would be otherwise by
- 30:55Speaker 1: your taking up again the same cause ye suffered for before.
- 30:59Speaker 1: For he therefore that ministerreth to you the Spirit and
- 31:03Speaker 1: worketh miracles among you, doth he it by the works
- 31:06Speaker 1: of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Ver six,
- 31:10Speaker 1: Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to
- 31:13Speaker 1: him for righteousness. Verse five, ye did receive the Spirit
- 31:18Speaker 1: at first among you by means of the doctrine of
- 31:20Speaker 1: evangelical righteousness. I will ask you then another question. Some
- 31:25Speaker 1: among you do receive the Spirit at this day, and
- 31:28Speaker 1: there are yet miracles wrought among you. Now what sort
- 31:31Speaker 1: of teachers is it whose ministry God thus seals by
- 31:34Speaker 1: conveying saving grace into the hearts of the hearers and
- 31:37Speaker 1: by miracles? Is it they who preach justification by works,
- 31:41Speaker 1: or those who preach justification by faith? Ye cannot but
- 31:45Speaker 1: acknowledge it is the latter, not the former sort. Truly,
- 31:49Speaker 1: saving benefits are communicated to none any other way than
- 31:52Speaker 1: they were before. They are received by faith. Still Verse six,
- 31:57Speaker 1: even as Abraham received, who believed God in that promise,
- 32:01Speaker 1: verse eight. And that was reckoned for righteousness to him,
- 32:05Speaker 1: not faith in itself, which with other works is also excluded.
- 32:09Speaker 1: But that righteousness of Christ, which Abraham's faith did lay
- 32:12Speaker 1: hold upon, was reckoned by the Lord for his righteousness
- 32:16Speaker 1: verse seven. Know Ye therefore that they which are of
- 32:20Speaker 1: faith the same other children of Abraham Verse seven. I
- 32:25Speaker 1: would have you know then that, seeing Abraham was justified
- 32:28Speaker 1: by faith, those that seek justification by faith, they are
- 32:31Speaker 1: the spiritual children of Abraham, he as with him of
- 32:34Speaker 1: the same spiritual inheritance, though they be gentiles and none
- 32:38Speaker 1: of his natural seed verse eight. And the Scripture, foreseeing
- 32:42Speaker 1: that God would justify the Heathen through faith, preached before
- 32:46Speaker 1: the Gospel unto Abraham, saying in THEE shall all nations
- 32:49Speaker 1: be blessed verse eight. And this will plainly appear if
- 32:55Speaker 1: it be considered that the Spirit of God, who speaks
- 32:57Speaker 1: in the scriptures, saw long before it was accomplished, that
- 33:00Speaker 1: God would justify the Heathens by faith, And therefore long
- 33:04Speaker 1: ago he preached to Abraham the same gospel we now preach,
- 33:07Speaker 1: which was holden forth in this promise viz. That all nations,
- 33:11Speaker 1: Jews and Gentiles, should be blessed in Him, in so
- 33:14Speaker 1: far as of him should come that blessed see Jesus Christ,
- 33:18Speaker 1: who should purchase all blessings to be bestowed on them,
- 33:21Speaker 1: and not leave them to be procured to them by
- 33:23Speaker 1: their own works Verse nine. So then they which be
- 33:28Speaker 1: of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Verse nine. So
- 33:33Speaker 1: then it follows that they which seek justification by faith
- 33:36Speaker 1: are blessed with the same blessings as believing Abraham, and
- 33:40Speaker 1: so are his children and no other. Verse ten. For
- 33:46Speaker 1: as many as are of the works of the Law
- 33:48Speaker 1: are under the curse. For it is written, cursed is
- 33:51Speaker 1: every one that continueth not in all things which are
- 33:53Speaker 1: written in the book of the Law to do them.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Verse ten. For as many as adhere to the law law,
- 34:00Speaker 1: seeking to be thereby justified, they are under God's curse,
- 34:04Speaker 1: and so have no share in Abraham's blessing. That they
- 34:07Speaker 1: are under the curse. The scripture teaches where it is written,
- 34:10Speaker 1: that everyone who gives not perfect and perpetual, uninterrupted obedience
- 34:14Speaker 1: to the law is under the curse, being by the
- 34:17Speaker 1: same law devoted to destruction. So we see that all
- 34:21Speaker 1: men adhering to the law for justification are cursed by
- 34:24Speaker 1: the law verse eleven. But that no man is justified
- 34:28Speaker 1: by the law in the sight of God. It is evident,
- 34:31Speaker 1: for the just shall live by faith verse eleven. But
- 34:36Speaker 1: that no man is justified by the law before God.
- 34:39Speaker 1: However their works may justify them before men, is evident
- 34:42Speaker 1: from that of the prophet Habakuk. He that is just
- 34:45Speaker 1: by faith, even he shall live a life of justification, sanctification,
- 34:49Speaker 1: and comfort, and that forever he shall never lose it
- 34:53Speaker 1: verse twelve. And the law is not of faith, but
- 34:57Speaker 1: the man that doth them shall live in them verse twelve.
- 35:02Speaker 1: But the law does not hold forth justification or life
- 35:05Speaker 1: by faith, but by works. For thus speaks the law.
- 35:08Speaker 1: The man that doth those things which the Law commandeth
- 35:11Speaker 1: him to do, he shall live by virtue of his works.
- 35:14Speaker 1: And this no man can do. And therefore no man
- 35:17Speaker 1: can be justified by the law. Nor is law righteousness,
- 35:20Speaker 1: the righteousness pointed out by the prophet as the righteousness
- 35:23Speaker 1: which will give life. Verse thirteen. Christ hath redeemed us
- 35:28Speaker 1: from the curse of the law being made a curse
- 35:30Speaker 1: for us, for it is written, cursed is every one
- 35:33Speaker 1: that hangeth on a tree Verse fourteen. That the blessing
- 35:37Speaker 1: of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ,
- 35:41Speaker 1: that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through
- 35:44Speaker 1: faith verse thirteen. Perhaps he will say that if the
- 35:48Speaker 1: law be so rigorous as we pretend, that it will
- 35:51Speaker 1: not justify a man but him that fulfills it every
- 35:54Speaker 1: way perfectly and curses others, we ourselves must be cursed too,
- 35:58Speaker 1: or else the Law's threatening issa made void. I answer
- 36:01Speaker 1: that Christ has freed us from the curse of the Law,
- 36:04Speaker 1: and that not by making it void, but by his
- 36:06Speaker 1: bearing the curse that the Lord announced against us. And
- 36:09Speaker 1: that Christ did bear the curse is evident from his
- 36:12Speaker 1: cursed death, which he died being hanged on the tree
- 36:15Speaker 1: of the Cross, which kind of death had by the
- 36:18Speaker 1: Great lawgiver a ceremonial curse annexed thereunto and all the
- 36:23Speaker 1: ceremonies having a respect to Christ. The curse fell on
- 36:26Speaker 1: him in the greatest reality, which lay but typically on
- 36:30Speaker 1: malefactors that were hanged on a tree verse fourteen. And
- 36:34Speaker 1: Christ bear the curse of the Law to the end
- 36:36Speaker 1: that the same blessings which were entailed on Abraham, the
- 36:39Speaker 1: father of the faithful, by promise might be given to
- 36:42Speaker 1: the gentiles through Christ coming into the world, dying, and
- 36:46Speaker 1: by his death taking down the partition wall, and making
- 36:49Speaker 1: Jew and Gentile all one. According to the promise in
- 36:52Speaker 1: thee shall all nations be blessed. And further, he bears
- 36:56Speaker 1: the curse that we both Jews and Gentiles might receive
- 36:59Speaker 1: this spirit. Compare verse two, which was promised to be
- 37:03Speaker 1: poured out in Gospel days in larger measure than ever before,
- 37:07Speaker 1: that we might, I say, receive the spirit through faith,
- 37:09Speaker 1: not by the works of the law Verse fifteen. Brethren,
- 37:14Speaker 1: I speak after the manner of men, though it be
- 37:16Speaker 1: but a man's covenant. Yet if it be confirmed, no
- 37:20Speaker 1: man disannulleth or addeth thereunto Verse fifteen. Brethren, I will
- 37:26Speaker 1: borrow a similitude from human affairs to let you see
- 37:29Speaker 1: that the giving of the law by Moses did not
- 37:31Speaker 1: bring in a new way of justification different from that
- 37:35Speaker 1: of the promise made to Abraham or covenant of grace.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Though a covenant be made only between man and man,
- 37:41Speaker 1: Yet if it be confirmed by oath of parties or
- 37:44Speaker 1: other usual ways of confirmation, neither of the parties can
- 37:48Speaker 1: justly make that covenant void, nor add any clause thereto
- 37:52Speaker 1: destructive of the former verse sixteen. Now to Abraham and
- 37:57Speaker 1: his seed, were the promise is made, he says, not
- 38:00Speaker 1: and to seeds as of many, but as of one,
- 38:03Speaker 1: and to thy seed, which is Christ. Verse sixteen. Now
- 38:08Speaker 1: the promises of the inheritance et cetera, were made of
- 38:12Speaker 1: God to Abraham and to his seed. God making these
- 38:15Speaker 1: promises saith not and to Abraham's seeds, as if the
- 38:19Speaker 1: promise had respect to several sorts of Abraham's seed, some
- 38:23Speaker 1: to be justified one way, some another way, But as
- 38:26Speaker 1: including all his children together in one. He saith to
- 38:30Speaker 1: Thy seed, which is Christ, mystical believing Jews and Gentiles,
- 38:34Speaker 1: gathered together into one body, making up Abraham's one seed,
- 38:38Speaker 1: to which the promises are made, as well as to
- 38:40Speaker 1: Abraham himself verse seventeen. And this I say that the
- 38:45Speaker 1: covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the
- 38:49Speaker 1: law which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot
- 38:52Speaker 1: dissonnull that it should make the promise of none effect
- 38:56Speaker 1: verse eighteen. For if the inheritance be of the law,
- 38:59Speaker 1: it is known law of promise. But God gave it
- 39:01Speaker 1: to Abraham by promise verse seventeen. This, then, I say,
- 39:06Speaker 1: for application of that known maxim in human affairs to
- 39:09Speaker 1: the business in hand, that seeing the Covenant of Grace,
- 39:12Speaker 1: or those absolute promises verse sixteen made to Abraham and
- 39:16Speaker 1: to his one spiritual seed, were before the giving of
- 39:20Speaker 1: the Law, confirmed and made sure by the oath of
- 39:22Speaker 1: God to Christ mystical that one seed. The Law of Moses,
- 39:26Speaker 1: which was given four hundred and thirty years after the
- 39:29Speaker 1: promises above said, cannot make void the covenant, so as
- 39:32Speaker 1: to render the absolute promise of righteousness and life of
- 39:35Speaker 1: none effect and to no purpose, it never being fulfilled,
- 39:39Speaker 1: but a new way introduced viz. By the Law, which
- 39:42Speaker 1: would undoubtedly make the promise useless verse eighteen. Because if
- 39:46Speaker 1: the inheritance of glory typified by the inheritance of Canaan
- 39:50Speaker 1: be by the law, it is not by that absolute promise,
- 39:54Speaker 1: for these are inconsistent. But sure it is God gave
- 39:58Speaker 1: the inheritance to Abraham by virtue of that promise, and
- 40:01Speaker 1: therefore it was not by the law verse nineteen. Wherefore,
- 40:06Speaker 1: then serveth the law. It was added because of transgressions
- 40:09Speaker 1: till the seed should come to whom the promise was made,
- 40:12Speaker 1: and it was ordained by angels in the hand of
- 40:15Speaker 1: a mediator Verse twenty. Now a mediator is not a
- 40:19Speaker 1: mediator of one, but God is one. Verse nineteen. You
- 40:23Speaker 1: will say, for what end was Moses's law given? Then,
- 40:27Speaker 1: if it was not that we might get life by it,
- 40:30Speaker 1: I answer that purely with respect to the Israelites, to
- 40:34Speaker 1: discover their transgressions to them. Moses's law was adjoined to
- 40:38Speaker 1: the promise made to the One Seed, not as a
- 40:40Speaker 1: part of the covenant, but as a thing extrinsical to it,
- 40:44Speaker 1: yet subservient thereto, which was only to remain adjoined to
- 40:47Speaker 1: the covenant or promise till such time as the One
- 40:50Speaker 1: Seed should come, Jews and Gentiles being gathered together into
- 40:54Speaker 1: one body and one's spiritual seed by Christ, to which
- 40:58Speaker 1: one seed the promises were made. Eight. As I have
- 41:00Speaker 1: before showed, and that Moses's law was thus and no
- 41:04Speaker 1: other way added to the promise appears from its being
- 41:07Speaker 1: ordained and given by the ministry of angels, Moses serving
- 41:10Speaker 1: as mediator betwixt God and the people in the giving
- 41:13Speaker 1: of this law Verse twenty. But so it is that
- 41:17Speaker 1: this mediator of the law to which Moses is not
- 41:20Speaker 1: the mediator of the one seed to which the promise
- 41:23Speaker 1: was made. And yet God is the covenanted God of
- 41:26Speaker 1: the one seed, he being that one God of all
- 41:29Speaker 1: in whom both believing Jews and Gentiles have a common
- 41:32Speaker 1: interest as making up the one seed of Abraham, to
- 41:35Speaker 1: which he promised to be a god, saying I will
- 41:38Speaker 1: be thy God and the God of thy seed. Therefore,
- 41:41Speaker 1: it clearly follows that Moses's law had respect to no
- 41:44Speaker 1: other but the Israelites, and that only a temporary respect
- 41:48Speaker 1: even to them, and that God is the covenanted God
- 41:51Speaker 1: of believing Jews and Gentiles, Moses's law being entirely laid aside,
- 41:56Speaker 1: having already served out its time Verse twenty one. Is
- 42:00Speaker 1: the law then against the promises of God. God forbid,
- 42:04Speaker 1: For if there had been a law given which could
- 42:06Speaker 1: have given life, verily, righteousness should have been by the
- 42:10Speaker 1: law Verse twenty two. But the scripture hath concluded all
- 42:14Speaker 1: under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ
- 42:17Speaker 1: might be given to them that believe Verse twenty one.
- 42:22Speaker 1: But ye will object if God be the covenant to
- 42:24Speaker 1: God of Abraham's one Seed, But Moses not the mediator
- 42:28Speaker 1: of that one's seed. The law will be contrary to
- 42:30Speaker 1: the promise, seeing the law promises life only to works,
- 42:34Speaker 1: and yet God will be a god to people without
- 42:36Speaker 1: any respect to works. I answer that were a blasphemous
- 42:40Speaker 1: assertion to say the law is contrary to the promises,
- 42:44Speaker 1: for that would make God inconsistent with himself. But the
- 42:47Speaker 1: law was given for no such end as to give
- 42:50Speaker 1: life to sinners. For if that law had been given
- 42:52Speaker 1: by Moses as a law able to give life to sinners, truly,
- 42:56Speaker 1: then righteousness had been by the law verse twenty two.
- 43:00Speaker 1: But that written law of Moses is so far from
- 43:02Speaker 1: giving righteousness that, upon the contrary, it hath, by its
- 43:05Speaker 1: rigorous commands and ceremonial rites, concluded as in a prison,
- 43:10Speaker 1: our persons, thoughts, words, actions, in a word, are all
- 43:14Speaker 1: under sin. It has irrefragably demonstrated all to be sinful,
- 43:18Speaker 1: to the end that the righteousness and life promised in
- 43:21Speaker 1: the Absolute Covenant might be given to them that believe
- 43:24Speaker 1: they receiving the same by faith, So that the Law
- 43:28Speaker 1: of Moses was notably subservient to the promise and not
- 43:31Speaker 1: contrary to it Verse twenty three. But before faith came,
- 43:36Speaker 1: we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith,
- 43:39Speaker 1: which should afterwards be revealed verse twenty three. But before
- 43:43Speaker 1: the doctrine of faith in Jesus Christ was revealed clearly
- 43:46Speaker 1: in the Gospel, being severed from those things wherewith it
- 43:49Speaker 1: was enveloped under the legal dispensation, we Jews were kept
- 43:53Speaker 1: as by a guard under the laws of Moses, and
- 43:56Speaker 1: shut up as in a prison, by the commands and
- 43:58Speaker 1: threatenings of the moral law law, and by the rights
- 44:01Speaker 1: of the ceremonial law, which still held guilt and death
- 44:04Speaker 1: before our eyes. That the revelation of the doctrine of faith,
- 44:07Speaker 1: which was clearly to be proposed in the Gospel, might
- 44:10Speaker 1: be as welcome to us as the opening of prison
- 44:13Speaker 1: doors to poor prisoners verse twenty four. Wherefore the law
- 44:17Speaker 1: was our schoolmaster, to bring us unto Christ, that we
- 44:20Speaker 1: might be justified by faith verse twenty four. Whence it
- 44:24Speaker 1: follows that the law of Moses served the church in
- 44:26Speaker 1: its infant state as a schoolmaster, to teach us the
- 44:30Speaker 1: need we had of Christ, and so to bring us
- 44:32Speaker 1: to Him that we might be justified by faith in
- 44:35Speaker 1: Him verse twenty five. But after that faith is come,
- 44:39Speaker 1: we are no longer under a schoolmaster verse twenty six.
- 44:43Speaker 1: For ye are all the children of God by faith
- 44:45Speaker 1: in Christ Jesus, verse twenty five. But now seeing the
- 44:50Speaker 1: clear revelation of the doctrine of faith is made in
- 44:52Speaker 1: the Gospel, we are no more under that schoolmaster Verse
- 44:56Speaker 1: twenty six. For all of you, whether Jews or Gentiles,
- 45:00Speaker 1: leaving in Christ, are our sons of God come to age,
- 45:03Speaker 1: having the clear knowledge of the mystery of Christ by
- 45:05Speaker 1: the Gospel, and so not standing in need of that
- 45:08Speaker 1: legal pedagogue. Ye hear and know that Christ was crucified,
- 45:12Speaker 1: et cetera, so that ye need not sacrifices to hold
- 45:15Speaker 1: forth the death of the Messiah to you, et cetera.
- 45:18Speaker 1: And ye are sons of God, and that sons come
- 45:20Speaker 1: to age by reason of your faith in Christ Jesus,
- 45:24Speaker 1: who is already come your faith having the pre eminency
- 45:27Speaker 1: of the faith of the saints under the legal dispensation
- 45:31Speaker 1: that whereas the object of their faith was Christ to
- 45:34Speaker 1: was to come, the object of yours is Christ come
- 45:37Speaker 1: already verse twenty seven. For as many of you as
- 45:40Speaker 1: have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Verse
- 45:44Speaker 1: twenty seven, Ye need not doubt your sonship, because of
- 45:47Speaker 1: the want of circumcision, for baptism has come into its room.
- 45:51Speaker 1: And as many of you as have been baptized, I
- 45:54Speaker 1: speak of you according to the judgment of charity, none
- 45:57Speaker 1: of you having been baptized by the ministers of Christ,
- 46:00Speaker 1: but such as have made a credible profession of saving faith.
- 46:04Speaker 1: As many of you, I say, as have been baptized
- 46:06Speaker 1: in token of your ingrafting to Christ, are united to Christ,
- 46:10Speaker 1: the Son of God, of which union your baptism is
- 46:13Speaker 1: a seal. Verse twenty eight. There is neither Jew nor Greek.
- 46:17Speaker 1: There is neither bond nor free. There is neither male
- 46:19Speaker 1: nor female. For year all one in Christ Jesus, Verse
- 46:23Speaker 1: twenty eight. The one seed is now come. The partition
- 46:27Speaker 1: wall is taken down. Though before it was otherwise, Yet
- 46:30Speaker 1: now it is no matter whether ye be Jews or Gentiles,
- 46:33Speaker 1: bond or free, male or female. The believing gentile without
- 46:37Speaker 1: more ado, has as great privileges as the Jews. And
- 46:41Speaker 1: though bond servants and women were restrained from the enjoyment
- 46:43Speaker 1: of some privileges under the Old Testament, which free persons
- 46:47Speaker 1: and men were admitted to Leviticus twenty two ten Genesis
- 46:52Speaker 1: seventeen ten. It is not so. Now women are baptized,
- 46:56Speaker 1: though they were not circumcised. Bond men may eat of
- 46:59Speaker 1: the Gospel wholy things, and freely partake, as well as
- 47:02Speaker 1: the free, though they were debarred from eating of the
- 47:04Speaker 1: holy thing under the law. For why ye are now
- 47:08Speaker 1: all one body and one spiritual seed, made one in Christ,
- 47:12Speaker 1: to whom all of you are joined by faith verse
- 47:15Speaker 1: twenty nine. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye
- 47:18Speaker 1: Abraham's seed and heirs according to the promise verse twenty nine. Now,
- 47:24Speaker 1: seeing ye are Christ's, which interest of His in you
- 47:28Speaker 1: is sealed by baptism, Ye are the spiritual children of Abraham. Yea,
- 47:32Speaker 1: all of you together are that one seed of His
- 47:35Speaker 1: to which the promises were made. And so ye are
- 47:37Speaker 1: heirs of the heavenly inheritance, according to the promise thereof
- 47:40Speaker 1: made to you as Abraham's seed, without any respect to
- 47:44Speaker 1: the law. End of chapter three, Chapter four of a
- 47:55Speaker 1: paraphrase upon the Epistle of Paul to the Galatians by
- 47:58Speaker 1: Thomas Boston. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 48:03Speaker 1: Chapter four. Now I say that the heir, as long
- 48:06Speaker 1: as he is a child differeth nothing from a servant,
- 48:09Speaker 1: though he be lord of all verse two, but is
- 48:13Speaker 1: under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Now for the further clearing of the abrogation of the law.
- 48:21Speaker 1: This I say that the heir in human affairs, as
- 48:23Speaker 1: long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a
- 48:26Speaker 1: servant in respect of liberty and actual possession of the inheritance.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Though in the meantime he is lord of all his
- 48:32Speaker 1: father's inheritance in respect of right and title thereto verse two.
- 48:37Speaker 1: But he is still under the government of tutors and
- 48:40Speaker 1: curators until the time come that his father, in his
- 48:42Speaker 1: will or testament has set for his liberty and entering
- 48:46Speaker 1: to the actual possession of his inheritance verse three. Even
- 48:51Speaker 1: so we, when we were children, were in bondage under
- 48:54Speaker 1: the elements of the world verse four. But when the
- 48:57Speaker 1: fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his son,
- 49:00Speaker 1: made of a woman, made under the law verse five,
- 49:04Speaker 1: to redeem them that were under the law, that we
- 49:06Speaker 1: might receive the adoption of sons verse three. Even so
- 49:11Speaker 1: we the Church of God, while we were in our
- 49:14Speaker 1: minority under the Old Testament, though heirs yet as servants
- 49:18Speaker 1: were in bondage, and that under the grievous yoke of
- 49:21Speaker 1: ceremonies and carnal rites, whereby we were rudely instructed even
- 49:25Speaker 1: by corporal things as figures of spiritual things verse four.
- 49:30Speaker 1: But when the time set by our heavenly Father was
- 49:33Speaker 1: fully come, God sent forth his son Christ, being without
- 49:37Speaker 1: Father as man, but made by the power of the
- 49:39Speaker 1: Holy Ghost, as the substance of the Virgin Mary, being
- 49:43Speaker 1: also though lord of the law, yet in our stead
- 49:46Speaker 1: made subject to the law or covenant of works, its
- 49:49Speaker 1: threatenings and commands, whereof the ceremonial law to the Israelites
- 49:54Speaker 1: made up a considerable part Verse five. And Christ was
- 49:58Speaker 1: thus made under the law, that they that were under
- 50:01Speaker 1: the law might be delivered from it, that all that
- 50:03Speaker 1: should believe might be freed from the commands of the
- 50:05Speaker 1: law of works as the condition of life, and from
- 50:08Speaker 1: the threatenings of the law upon their disobedience, and the
- 50:11Speaker 1: Jews who were under the ceremonial law might be delivered
- 50:14Speaker 1: from that yoke of ceremonies Christ the substance of them
- 50:17Speaker 1: being come, And that we, both Jews and Gentiles, believing
- 50:21Speaker 1: in Christ, might receive a more clear manifestation of our
- 50:24Speaker 1: sonship to God under the New Testament dispensation, even as
- 50:28Speaker 1: the heir, when he becomes major and actually enters to
- 50:31Speaker 1: the possession of his inheritance, appears no more in the
- 50:33Speaker 1: condition of a servant but a son. For six. And
- 50:38Speaker 1: because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit
- 50:40Speaker 1: of his Son into your hearts, crying abba Father. For
- 50:44Speaker 1: six And because ye are now sons come to age,
- 50:47Speaker 1: God has sent forth in a more plentiful measure, his
- 50:50Speaker 1: own spirit into your hearts, whereby ye have a more
- 50:53Speaker 1: ready access to God and familiarity with Him, whether ye
- 50:57Speaker 1: be Jews or Gentiles than believers under the Old Time Testament,
- 51:00Speaker 1: had there being as great a difference betwixt your and
- 51:03Speaker 1: their access to and familiarity with God, as between that
- 51:07Speaker 1: which the heir, being a child, has with his Father
- 51:10Speaker 1: while he is under the rod, and that which he hath,
- 51:13Speaker 1: being a man come to years ver seven. Wherefore thou
- 51:17Speaker 1: art no more a servant but a son, and if
- 51:20Speaker 1: a son, than an heir of God through Christ. Ver seven. Wherefore,
- 51:24Speaker 1: seeing ye have received this plentiful effusion of the spirit
- 51:27Speaker 1: of adoption, ye are no more as servants as the
- 51:30Speaker 1: child under ages. But ye are sons past your minority,
- 51:34Speaker 1: and if sons than heirs of God Himself, as your inheritance,
- 51:39Speaker 1: to which privilege you are advanced through Christ, to whom
- 51:42Speaker 1: by faith ye are united from all which it is
- 51:44Speaker 1: evident that your cleaving to the ceremonial law is as
- 51:47Speaker 1: unreasonable as if you, being come to years, should return
- 51:50Speaker 1: to the state you are in while in your non
- 51:52Speaker 1: age Verse eight. Howbeit, then when ye knew not God,
- 51:58Speaker 1: ye did service unto them, which by nature are no gods.
- 52:01Speaker 1: Verse eight. Howbeit, then, when ye knew not the true God,
- 52:05Speaker 1: ye served idols, which are gods only in men's opinion,
- 52:08Speaker 1: and not by their own nature. And ye were neither
- 52:10Speaker 1: born nor bred up under the ceremonial law, but in
- 52:14Speaker 1: pagan idolatry, so far were ye from sonship to God,
- 52:17Speaker 1: which ye are now advanced to Verse nine. But now
- 52:21Speaker 1: after that ye have known God, or rather are known
- 52:24Speaker 1: of God, how turn ye again to the weak and
- 52:26Speaker 1: beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage
- 52:30Speaker 1: Verse ten, ye observe days and months, and times and years.
- 52:35Speaker 1: Verse eleven. I am afraid of you, lest I have
- 52:37Speaker 1: bestowed upon you labour in vain Verse nine. But now
- 52:42Speaker 1: seeing ye know the true God, or rather are known
- 52:44Speaker 1: of God, the acquaintance being entirely due to God's free grace.
- 52:48Speaker 1: What a return is this ye make to God for
- 52:50Speaker 1: his kindness to return again to ceremonial observances which are
- 52:54Speaker 1: such as can neither justify you nor afford true consolation.
- 52:58Speaker 1: But in these respects are weak and beggarly, as a
- 53:01Speaker 1: coffer from which the Jewel is gone, Christ being now come,
- 53:04Speaker 1: and therefore no more to be seen in them, to
- 53:07Speaker 1: which nevertheless ye will needs again be in bondage Verse eleven.
- 53:11Speaker 1: I speak not of this your sole retreat without ground
- 53:14Speaker 1: for ye to observe days after the Jewish manner viz.
- 53:17Speaker 1: Their Sabbaths and new moons, their months as their first
- 53:21Speaker 1: and seventh anniversary feasts, and sabbatical years Verse eleven, upon
- 53:26Speaker 1: which account, I am afraid my labor among you may
- 53:28Speaker 1: be in vain, for what will it profit to return
- 53:31Speaker 1: from paganism to Judaism Verse twelve. Brethren, I beseech you
- 53:36Speaker 1: be as I am, for I am as ye are.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Ye have not injured me at all Verse twelve. Brethren,
- 53:44Speaker 1: I beseech you let me have room in your affections,
- 53:46Speaker 1: for I assure you that ye have a place in
- 53:48Speaker 1: my heart as my other self. And while I so
- 53:51Speaker 1: sharply reprove you, I persuade you I am not resenting
- 53:54Speaker 1: any personal injury, but the injury ye are doing to
- 53:57Speaker 1: Christ and his truths. Verse thirteen. Ye know how, through
- 54:03Speaker 1: infirmity of the flesh I preached the Gospel unto you
- 54:05Speaker 1: at the first verse fourteen, and my temptation, which was
- 54:09Speaker 1: in my flesh, Ye despise not nor reject it, but
- 54:12Speaker 1: received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Verse thirteen. Ye know how that at the first when
- 54:19Speaker 1: the Gospel came to you, I preached it to you,
- 54:21Speaker 1: being in a contemptible outward condition by reason of the
- 54:24Speaker 1: afflictions I endured in the work verse fourteen. And that
- 54:28Speaker 1: trial of mine, wherewith God was pleased to try me
- 54:31Speaker 1: in respect of my various bodily afflictions and persecutions. Ye
- 54:34Speaker 1: did not haughtily overlook or despise, nor did ye reject
- 54:38Speaker 1: me and my ministry for them. But upon the contrary,
- 54:41Speaker 1: ye receive me as a messenger of God. Yea as
- 54:43Speaker 1: Christ himself, looking upon me as his ambassador, as knowing
- 54:47Speaker 1: Christ spoke to you by my mouth verse fifteen. But
- 54:51Speaker 1: where is that happiness ye thought ye had in my ministry?
- 54:54Speaker 1: Where is it now? I am sure the time was
- 54:57Speaker 1: ye thought yourselves very happy in me, For I can
- 55:00Speaker 1: bear witness that some time your respect to me was
- 55:03Speaker 1: so great that you would have parted with anything ye
- 55:05Speaker 1: had for my encouragement. Verse sixteen. Ye looked on me
- 55:09Speaker 1: then as your great friend. But now will ye look
- 55:11Speaker 1: upon me as your enemy? Because I tell you that
- 55:13Speaker 1: which is truth? Ye should herein be very injurious to me.
- 55:17Speaker 1: For my telling you the truth is an argument of
- 55:19Speaker 1: my lasting affection towards you verse seventeen. They zealously affect you,
- 55:24Speaker 1: but not well, yea. They would exclude you that you
- 55:27Speaker 1: might affect them verse eighteen. But it is good to
- 55:31Speaker 1: be zealously affected always in a good thing, but not
- 55:34Speaker 1: only when I am present with you. Verse seventeen. The
- 55:38Speaker 1: legal teachers among you have a great deal of zeal
- 55:40Speaker 1: for you, indeed, but it is not of the right stamp, yea.
- 55:44Speaker 1: They would exclude you out of my affections that ye
- 55:46Speaker 1: might be zealous for them, and their doctrine verse eighteen.
- 55:50Speaker 1: But I would put you in mind that as ye
- 55:52Speaker 1: have been zealous for my doctrine before, so it is
- 55:55Speaker 1: good to be constant in your zeal for such a thing.
- 55:57Speaker 1: And it is not good, but very bad to have
- 56:00Speaker 1: been zealous for it only when I was personally present
- 56:02Speaker 1: with you verse nineteen. My little children, of whom I
- 56:06Speaker 1: travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.
- 56:09Speaker 1: Verse twenty. I desire to be present with you now
- 56:12Speaker 1: to change my voice, for I stand in doubt of you.
- 56:16Speaker 1: Verse nineteen. O Gallatians, whom I love as my little children,
- 56:20Speaker 1: for whose conversion I labored at first as a woman
- 56:22Speaker 1: laborth to bring forth a child, and of whom I am,
- 56:25Speaker 1: as it were, travailing in birth again until the image
- 56:28Speaker 1: of Christ, defaced by error in you, be restored to
- 56:31Speaker 1: its former luster. Verse twenty. I would fain be present
- 56:35Speaker 1: with you, to speak with you face to face, and
- 56:37Speaker 1: to accommodate my speech more closely to your present case.
- 56:40Speaker 1: For being absent, I am in several doubts about your case,
- 56:43Speaker 1: which might be cleared by converse with you. Verse twenty one.
- 56:48Speaker 1: Tell me ye that desire to be under the law
- 56:50Speaker 1: do ye, not hear the law verse twenty two. For
- 56:53Speaker 1: it is written that Abraham had two sons, the one
- 56:56Speaker 1: by a bondmaid, the other by a free woman verse
- 56:59Speaker 1: twenty three. But he who was of the bond woman
- 57:02Speaker 1: was born after the flesh, but he of the free
- 57:04Speaker 1: woman was by promise verse twenty one. Ye that desire
- 57:09Speaker 1: to be under Moses's law, tell me, do you not
- 57:11Speaker 1: hear Moses's law? This of itself might convince you of
- 57:15Speaker 1: your error verse twenty two. For it is written in
- 57:18Speaker 1: the Book of Genesis that Abraham had two sons, Ishmael
- 57:21Speaker 1: by Hagar, the bondmaid, and Isaac by Sarah, a free woman,
- 57:26Speaker 1: verse twenty three. But there was a difference in their nativity.
- 57:29Speaker 1: For Ishmael was born according to the course of nature
- 57:32Speaker 1: of a young woman fit naturally for conception. But Isaac
- 57:36Speaker 1: was born by virtue of a special promise Genesis eighteen ten,
- 57:39Speaker 1: his mother being barren and also past the age of
- 57:42Speaker 1: child bearing verse twenty four. Which things are an allegory.
- 57:47Speaker 1: For these are the two covenants, the one from the
- 57:49Speaker 1: Mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar verse
- 57:54Speaker 1: twenty five. For this Agar is Mount Sinai in Arabia,
- 57:57Speaker 1: and answereth to Jerusalem, which now is and is in
- 58:00Speaker 1: bondage with her children Verse twenty four, which things are
- 58:04Speaker 1: a typical history. For these two women represent the two
- 58:07Speaker 1: covenants with the churches, thereto adhering, respectively, the one from
- 58:11Speaker 1: Mount Sinai, to wit, the Covenant of Works which was
- 58:14Speaker 1: given there, and where the Jewish Synagogue under that covenant
- 58:17Speaker 1: had its beginning. This bringeth forth children, indeed, but such
- 58:21Speaker 1: children as are mere mercenary worshippers, and under the bondage
- 58:25Speaker 1: of that covenant, its curses and commands. And this is
- 58:28Speaker 1: that represented by Agar, the bondwoman, and that very conveniently
- 58:33Speaker 1: verse twenty five. For as to that allegorical Agar, the
- 58:37Speaker 1: Mount Sinai is in Arabia, where lived Aegar and her son,
- 58:41Speaker 1: and the same Sinai answers well to the earthly Jerusalem,
- 58:44Speaker 1: the now Jewish Synagogue, nothing being heard from either of them,
- 58:48Speaker 1: but do and live. But Sinai still but serves with
- 58:52Speaker 1: the legalists, her children, Sinai and her covenant, because it
- 58:55Speaker 1: was never designed but to be subservient to the Covenant
- 58:58Speaker 1: of Grace. As Hagar to Sarah her children the legalists
- 59:02Speaker 1: following the state of the Venta. I ye, the womb
- 59:05Speaker 1: from whence they came, are but in the state of
- 59:07Speaker 1: bond servants, not in the state of sons and heirs,
- 59:11Speaker 1: more than Ishmael had Isaac's privilege verse twenty six. But Jerusalem,
- 59:16Speaker 1: which is above is free, which is the mother of
- 59:18Speaker 1: us all verse twenty seven. For it is written, rejoice
- 59:22Speaker 1: thou Barren, that bearest, not break forth, and cry thou
- 59:26Speaker 1: that travailest, not for the desolate hath many more children
- 59:29Speaker 1: than she which hath an husband Verse twenty six. But
- 59:33Speaker 1: the other covenant, the Covenant of Grace, with the Church
- 59:36Speaker 1: adhering thereto to wit, the Church of believers in Christ,
- 59:39Speaker 1: which is the heavenly Jerusalem, enjoying the reality of all
- 59:42Speaker 1: the typical external privileges which the earthly Jerusalem had, which
- 59:46Speaker 1: covenant and Church is the mother of us all Jews
- 59:49Speaker 1: or Gentiles that believe in Christ. Even she is free.
- 59:52Speaker 1: The Covenant is served, but serves not as Sarah. The
- 59:55Speaker 1: Church is mistress of the family, being Christ's spouse and
- 59:58Speaker 1: her children sons and heirs, as Sarah and her Isaac
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: verse twenty seven. I say the Christian Church is that
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: free mother of us. All for Isaiah in his fifty
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: fourth chapter, verse one, with an eye to that typical
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: history of Hagar and Sarah in Abraham's family, after he
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: had spoke of the sufferings of Christ, immediately addresseth himself
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: to her as was in her first days, before the
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: preaching of the Gospel by the apostles, saying, rejoice thou,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: that as Sarah art yet baron thy children, making no
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: figure in comparison of the synagogue, break forth over all
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: thy disagreements and cry for joy. Though thou travailest not
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: yet to bring forth children, as thou shalt do ere
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: long by the preaching of the Apostles after the effusion
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: of the Holy Ghost on them. For though thou seem
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: desolate as a widow, thy husband, being yet in the
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: state of humiliation and so very little known, thou shalt
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: have many more children, even such as shall join themselves
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: to Thee as members, than the Jewish synagogue, which only
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: seems to have God for her husband. This shall be
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: as sure to THEE as if thou hadst all these
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: children about thy hand already verse twenty eight. Now, we brethren,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: as Isaac was, are the children of the Promise Verse
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: twenty eight. Now, brethren, to apply the whole unto us.
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: Ye see, we who adhere to the Covenant of Grace
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: are such children as Isaac, even children of promise, born
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: unto God by virtue of the absolute Promise, not by
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: the strength of nature or by our own works verse
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: twenty nine. But as then be that was born after
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: the flesh persecuted him that was born after the spirit.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Even so it is now verse thirty. Nevertheless, what saith
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: the scripture cast out the bondwoman and her son, For
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: the son of the free woman Verse twenty nine. But
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: as then Ishmael persecuted Isaac, so now the legalists children
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: of the Covenant of Works persecute the children of the
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: Covenant of Grace Verse thirty. Nevertheless, what saith the scripture
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: even cast out Hagar and Ishmael, for he shall not
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: be heir with Isaac. The same sentence is passed against
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: the Jewish Synagogue and all that adhere to the Covenant
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: of Works. They shall be rejected and cast out of
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: the society of Saints, for they shall never partake of
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: the heavenly inheritance with those that believe in Christ verse
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: thirty one. So, then, brethren, we are not children of
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: the bondwoman, but of the free verse thirty one. Therefore,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: seeing we are children of promise as Isaac, we are
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: not under the legal covenant, but the covenant of grace,
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: and so are free, and therefore have nothing to do
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: with the law. End of chapter four, Chapter five of
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: a paraphrase upon the Epistle of Paul to the Galatians
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: by Thomas Boston. This LibriVox recording is in the public domain.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: Five fast. Therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: of bondage verse two. Behold, I, Paul say unto you
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: Verse three. For I testify again to every man that
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: is circumcised, that he is a debtor. To do the
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: whole law. From the whole of that I have said.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I exhort you to stand fast in the liberty purchased
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: to us by Christ, as stout soldiers, keeping their ground
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: where the captain has set them, and let no man
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: wreath that servile yoke of the Legal Covenant about your
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: necks again, and to press you to this Verse two. Behold,
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: in opposition to all that the seducers among you say
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: for it, I, Paul, an apostle of Christ, say that
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: if the gentiles shall be circumcised, looking on that writ
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: as necessary to your justification, ye shall have no benefit
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: by Christ. Verse three. For I, as Christ's messenger, do
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: further testify to every man who is circumcised, laying any
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: stress on it for his justification, that by his very
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: receiving of circumcision, under that notion, he is obliged perfectly
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: to obey the whole law under pain of the curse,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: which is inevitable to him. In regard no man is
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: able so to obey it. He is, I say, thereby
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: obliged to give such obedience in regard whatever evangelical use
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: circumcision had to believers. Yet it is to him the
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: sacrament of the legal Covenant, binding him to the observance
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: of the same covenant, according to the tenor of it,
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: which promises life to perfect obedience, and otherwise denounceth the curse.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Verse four, Christ is become of no effect unto you,
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: whosoever of you are justified by the law, ye are
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: fallen from grace verse five. For we through the Spirit
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. Verse six.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: For in Jesus Christ, neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision,
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: but faith, which worketh by love. Verse four. Whoever of
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: you seek to be justified by the law, can have
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: no benefit by Christ. For by your seeking justification by
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: the law, ye renounce and fall from the free favor
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: of God as the fountain of justification. And so ye
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: renounce Christ also, and therefore must stand and fall according
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: to your own works. Verse five. Ye that do so
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: are certainly fallen from grace. For we that stand cleaving
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: to it look for no good by our works or
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: by the law. But through the Spirit of God working
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: in us, we look for and expect heaven, which is
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: given only to the perfectly righteous. We expect it, I
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: say by faith only verse six. And this we do
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: because we know that in the Kingdom of Christ, neither
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: circumcision nor uncircumcision availeth aught to justification and a right
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: to glory. Whatever circumcision may avail for in the law's dominions,
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: or whatever stress that way foolish gentiles may lay upon
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: their uncircumcision. Nothing avails here for these ends but faith,
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: not that which is dead and idle, but that faith
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: which is operative, so that ye need not fear want
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: of work by casting off of the legal covenant. If
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: ye have faith of the right stamp, even that which
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: is justifying, it will put you to work good works.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: And that not from a mercenary principle fear of punishment
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: and hope of reward, as those that live under the
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: influence of the legal covenant, but out of a principle
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: of love becoming sons. Ver seven, ye did run well?
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: Who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Verse eight? This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: you Verse nine, A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: Verse seven. Time was when ye did forwardly embrace and
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: cleave to my doctrine, so that you are making pleasant
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: progress in religion. Who has now stopped you in your course?
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: Whoever it was, it is unaccountable ye should be stopped
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: in giving obedience to the truth. Verse eight. However, fully
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: ye seem to yourselves to be persuaded of your opinion
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: that persuasion is from another hand than his, who, by
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: My Gospel called you out of paganism to Christ. It
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: is not from God verse nine to tell you the
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: mystery of it, as a little eleven leveneth the whole lump.
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: Even so a few seducers that have crept in among
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: you have corrupted by their false doctrine, the whole churches
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: of Galatia, which are as one lump. Verse ten. I
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: be none otherwise minded. But he that troubleth you shall
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: bear his judgment, whosoever he be. Verse ten. I have
- 1:07:42Speaker 1: confidence concerning you, when I consider the constancy of God's grace,
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: that some time you will think no other thing than
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: I have just now told you of the rise of
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: this persuasion, and that you will be of the same
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: mind with me in that matter, and so will return
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: to the truth ye have deserted. But be who he
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: will that troubles you and loads you with that yoke
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: of bondage. God shall lay a burden on him of
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: another sort, even a burden of punishment here or hereafter
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: Verse eleven. And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: why do I yet suffer persecution. Then is the offense
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: of the cross ceased verse eleven. But as for me, brethren,
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: it is strange that any should have the impudence to
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: say that I preach the necessity of circumcision, because forsooth
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: I circumcise Timothy. For if I preach that doctrine, how
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: come I to be persecuted of the Jews as an
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: enemy to Moses's law? Yea, Surely, if I preach that doctrine,
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: then the offense that the Jews take at the doctrine
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: of the Gospel, holding forth Christ's sufferings embraced by faith
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: as the only way of salvation, is ceased, which I
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: find daily the contrary of by their restless malice against
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: me Verse twelve. I would they were even cut off
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: which trouble you Verse thirteen. For brethren, ye have been
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: called unto liberty. Only use not liberty for an occasion
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: to the flesh, but by love serve one another verse fourteen.
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: in this, thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. Verse twelve.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: I would that they which so trouble you with the
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: doctrine of cutting off the foreskin were themselves cut off
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: from the society of the Church with the circumcising knife
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: of excommunication, though indeed, to do it actually at this time,
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: while ye are in such a ferment, would not tend
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: to edification verse thirteen. I wish not this without good reason.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: For brethren, God has called you to liberty, but they
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: have called you back again to bondage. God has indeed
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: called you to liberty. Only I would caution you against
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: the abuse of Christian liberty. Do not so make use
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: of your liberty as to make it appandit to your corruption,
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: taking occasion of licentiousness from it. But on the contrary,
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: though now ye are all in confusion among yourselves, learn
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: to advance one another's welfare, as if each of you
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: were servant to his neighbour by mutual love verse fourteen.
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: For this is the most compendious way of fulfilling the law,
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: the law being fulfilled in one word. Even in this,
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: thou shalt love thy neighbor with the same sincerity thou
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: lovest thyself. This argument may well take with you that
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: are so zealous for fulfilling the law verse fifteen. But
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: if ye bite and devour one another take heed that
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: ye be not consumed one of another verse fifteen. But
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: on the other hand, if ye, like so many wild beasts,
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: go on to bite one another by reproaches and to
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: devour one another by violence, take heed it end not
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: in a total devastation of your society by your own hands.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: Verse sixteen. This I say, then, walk in the spirit,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Verse seventeen. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: the Spirit against the flesh, And these are contrary the
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: one to the other, so that ye cannot do the
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: things that ye would for sixteen. But for remedy of
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: these evils, I say, walk ye, and frame your conversation
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: according to the dictates of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: And so although your corrupt part will have its lust,
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: its sinful motions, yet ye shall be thereby kept from
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: consenting thereto which perfects and fulfills that sinful motion. For seventeen.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: For the corrupt nature lusteth against the Spirit, desiring those
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: things which are grievous to the Spirit, and the Spirit
- 1:11:36Speaker 1: against corrupt nature, in so far as he stirs up
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: in the saint's desires of those things that are grievous
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: to the corrupt nature, and those in the gracious soul
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: lie against one another as soldiers in a trench against
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: a fort, on design that ye may not do whatever
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: things ye would, whether as gracious or as corrupt, So
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: that if you take part with the spirit, ye will
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: get the upper hand, though the flesh will still lust
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: in you, and so make a blot in the fairest
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: line ye write verse eighteen. But if ye be led
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: by the spirit, ye are not under the law verse eighteen.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: But for your comfort in this case, I tell you
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: that if ye be led by the Spirit of God,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: walking after and setting yourself to follow his dictates, ye
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: are not under the law as a covenant of works,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: for the spirit is given to none under that covenant,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: as I told you before Chapter three, verse two. And
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: if so, then ye are not under nor liable to
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: the curse for your slips verse nineteen. Now the works
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: of the flesh are manifest, which are these adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Verse twenty idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: heresies verse twenty one, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: like of the which I tell you before, as I
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: have also told you in time past, that they which
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: verse nineteen. Now ye may know whether ye be led
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: by the spirit or by the flesh, by your actions
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: and course of life. For as to the flesh, though
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: that corrupt principle lies very inwardly and is hid, yet
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: the works of it are manifest, any body may discern them.
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: These works are adultery, fornication, all other sorts of filthy
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: lust of that kind, wantonness Verse twenty idolatry, witchcraft, feuds,
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: quarrelings proceeding therefrom emulations whereby men desire to outstrip others
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: in what is commendable, just because they have no will
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: to be overclouded by them, wrath or inordinate anger, contentiousness,
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: sedition or dissension, in which men separate from one another
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: errors opposite to some substantial truth in religion pertinaciously maintained
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: Verse twenty one. Envyings at the good of others, murders, drunkenness, revelings,
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: or excess of belly chia, joined with less sivious behavior,
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: and such like vices of which I now warn you aforehand,
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: as I have before told you by word of mouth
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: when I was present with you, that those who impenitently
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: persist in these things shall never inherit the kingdom of
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: Heaven verse twenty two. But the fruit of the Spirit
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: is love, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith verse
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: twenty three, meekness, temperance. Against such there is no law
- 1:14:28Speaker 1: Verse twenty two and twenty three. But the savory product
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: of the Spirit in men is love to God and
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: our neighbor, spiritual, joy, peaceableness, whereby we are disposed to
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: do no wrong to any man, long suffering, whereby we
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: patiently bear if they wrong us, Gentleness, whereby we are
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: affable and pleasant to them, and easy to be entreated. Goodness,
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: whereby we are ready to communicate any good we have
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: to any man. Fidelity, meekness, and temperance which bridles fleshly
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: appetite and desires. No law strikes against such things, but
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: they are commanded by the law. In order to your trial,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: ye have heard, what are the works of the spirit,
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: and what are those of the flesh? Verse twenty four
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: and they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: the affections and lusts verse twenty four. But so it
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: is that all they that are Christ's, by his Spirit
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: dwelling in them, have served their corrupt nature together with
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: its uneasy passions and pleasant desires, as they served Christ.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: That is, they have crucified them. They have nailed them
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: to Christ's cross and given them death's wounds. So as
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: though they be not utterly extinct, as yet they nevertheless
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: are a dying Verse twenty five. If we live in
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: the spirit, let us also walk in the spirit. Verse
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: twenty five. If then we pretend to have the spirit
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: in us as a principle of spiritual life, let us
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: evidence it by our taking part with the Spirit against
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: our corruptions, and framing our life according to his dictates.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: Verse twenty six. Let us not be desirous of vain glory,
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: provoking one another, envying one another. Verse twenty six. I
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: fear ambition has been very hurtful to you, So I
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: would exhort you, in order to your returning to a
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: sound mind, that ye would not be ambitious or desirous
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: of applause among men, which is but vain and empty glory,
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: provoking one another by mutual disdain, as if others were
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: nothing in comparison of you, and envying one another, desiring
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: none to be esteemed by yourselves. End of chapter five,
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: Chapter six of a paraphrase upon the Epistle of Paul
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: to the Galatians by Thomas Boston. This LibriVox recording is
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: in the public domain. Chapter six. Brethren, if a man
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: be overtaken in a fault, ye, which are spiritual, restore
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: such an one in the spirit of mind meekness, considering thyself,
- 1:17:02Speaker 1: lest thou also be tempted. Brethren, if any of your
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: fellow church members, who have sometimes given evidence of their
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: having the spirit, be surprised into a fault, whether in
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: principle or practice, by the flesh prevailing against the spirit.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: I exhort you, who are strong to stand by the
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: spirits prevailing against the flesh, that ye would endeavor the
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: recovery of such as a surgeon sets right a disjointed member,
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: for those, by their fall are disjointed members of Christ's body,
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: And that ye would do this in meekness, purging your
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: admonitions and reproofs to them of all fleshly passions and
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: to press and help you to this, ye would. In
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: the meantime, ye are about that work. Consider yourselves, how
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: the root of all sin is in you. Lest if
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: ye forget to look to yourselves in these glasses of
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: human frailty, God be provoked to make you a glass
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: to others, suffering you for self conceit to be tempted
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: and succumb. Verse two. Bear ye, ye one another's burdens,
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: and so fulfill the law of Christ. Verse two, take
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: a lift of one another's burdens, sympathizing with them under
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: their miscarriages, as if they were your own, being affected
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: with them, and thus answer the command of loving one another,
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: which is Christ's law recommended to us in a special
- 1:18:18Speaker 1: manner by his precept and practice. This Christian sympathy will
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: be an evangelical fulfilling of that excellent law. Verse three.
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: For if a man think himself to be something when
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: he is nothing, he deceiveth himself. Verse three. Those that
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: have fallen, they dote on Moses' law. Ye that stand do, say,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: ye will hold by Christ's law. Pray you then give
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: this proof of your sincerity in these pretensions. For if
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: a man think himself something and above others, while in
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: the meantime, in his practice he is no more than
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: his neighbours. That man is a sole deceiver of himself.
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: So ye, if ye hold by Christ's law in your principles,
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: but flinch from it in your practice, ye deceive yourselves,
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: valuing yourselves upon principles contradicted by your practice. Verse four.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: But let every man prove his own work, and then
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: Verse five, For every man shall bear his own burden.
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: Verse four. But let every man try his work and
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: practice by the touchstone of God's word, and then if
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: he find it, will abide the touch stone, he shall
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: have ground of rejoicing and counting himself happy in his state.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: He shall have it, I say, in himself thus approven
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: by God's word, so that he shall not need to
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: fetch in that silly joy and rejoicing in his own
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: state from other men's falls, as some do, who think
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: themselves right enough, because they are not so bad as
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: some others that they see. Verse five. Let every man
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: try his work, for at the day of judgment, every
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: man shall give an account of his own actions to God.
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: And the best will find that they have burden enough
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: when they come before a holy God, who will never
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: pass a comfortable sentence on any just because they were
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: not so bad as others. For six, let him that
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: is taught in the Word communicate unto him that teacheth
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: in all good things. For six, let the people who
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: are taught communicate to their ministers, who teach them in
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: all temporal good things necessary for their comfortable maintenance. Verse seven.
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Be not deceived. God is not mocked. For whatsoever a
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: man soweth, that shall he also reap Verse eight. For
- 1:20:31Speaker 1: he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: reap corruption. But he that soweth to the spirit shall
- 1:20:37Speaker 1: of the spirit reap life everlasting. Verse seven. Do not
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: deceive yourselves when ye have no will to be at
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: the expense of maintaining your godly pastors. Ye can find
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: out many fair pretenses for it to stop their mouths
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: whereby they are mocked. But ye have to do with God,
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: who will not be so mocked by you. For as
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: a man shall reap the same grain that he seeth,
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: so shall ye at the great day get a reward
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: suitable to your actions in this life. Verse eight for
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: he that liveth according to the flesh shall get eternal
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: destruction as the product of his sinful actions. But he
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: that liveth according to the spirit shall get eternal life
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: as the product of these good works. Verse nine. And
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: let us not be weary in well doing, for in
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: due season we shall reap if we faint not verse nine.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: And being entered on a course of doing good works,
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: let us not shrink back from it as cowards in war.
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: For though we do not reap the fruit of it
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: presently more than the husbandman does, we shall reap the
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: fruit of it, even eternal life, in the time destinate
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: for reaping viz. The harvest of the world, if we
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: do not faint and give over like a man sunk
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: under a burden, his spirits being wasted, and his members
- 1:21:50Speaker 1: thereby being, as it were, all loosed. Verse ten. As
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men,
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: vicly unto them who are of the household of faith.
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: Verse ten. Therefore, as we have opportunity to do good,
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: let us do good, spiritual and temporal to all men,
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: but in a special manner to the godly who are
- 1:22:12Speaker 1: members of Christ's family, which is joined together by the
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: bond of faith. Verse eleven. Ye, see how large a
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: Verse eleven. Ye, see how large a letter I have
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: written to you with mine own hand, and thereby my
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: affection to you. For though I have written large letters
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: to others, yet they were written with other hands than
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: mine own. Verse twelve. As many as desire to make
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: a fair show in the flesh, they constrain you to
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: be circumcised, only lest they should suffer persecution for the
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: cross of Christ. Verse thirteen. For neither they themselves who
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: are circumcised, keep the law, but desire to have you circumcised,
- 1:22:51Speaker 1: that they may glory in your flesh Verse fourteen. But
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: God forbid that I should glory save in the cross
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: crucied unto me, and I unto the world. Verse fifteen.
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: For in Christ Jesus, neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision,
- 1:23:08Speaker 1: but a new creature verse sixteen. And as many as
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: walk according to this rule, peace beyond them, and mercy
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: and upon the Israel of God Verse twelve. As many
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: as desire to make a fair outward show of religion
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: in the body, while they neglect religion in their spirits. They,
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: by the doctrine of the necessity of circumcision, constrain you
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: to be circumcised, only that they may ward off from
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: themselves the blow of persecution by the Jews, who would
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: be stirred up against them if they should preach the
- 1:23:37Speaker 1: sincere doctrine of Christ's sufferings verse thirteen. It is not
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: out of true respect to the law that they urge it,
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: For even they themselves that are circumcised, do neither keep
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: the moral law nor the ceremonial law, where it crosseth
- 1:23:51Speaker 1: their interest. But they desire to have you circumcised, that
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: they may satisfy their ambition, and may glory in making
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: so many proselytes to their life opinion receiving circumcision in
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: the flesh, which we have preached down verse fourteen. But
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: far be it from me to glory in anything but
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: the sufferings of Christ, by which I am so mortified
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: that I care no more for the world's good opinion
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: or anything in it that men use to care for
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: or value. A crucified person who is pronounced to be
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: cursed and on the other hand, the world cares as
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: little for me, even upon the very account of Christ's Cross,
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: which I preach and put my whole confidence in verse fifteen.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: I glory only in the Cross of Christ. For I
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: take it for an infallible rule, that in the Kingdom
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: of Christ neither circumcision nor uncircumcision is aught worth, but
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: that the new creation or regeneration is the great business
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: requisite to evidence our interest in Christ verse sixteen. And
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: as for those that turn the edge of their endeavors
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: this way, living according to this rule, I, as an
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: apostle of Christ, bless them from the Lord, though false
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: teachers should curse them, Peace of all kinds beyond them,
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: and the mercy of God be their sure refuge. And
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: let these be on all the spiritual Israelites, true believers,
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: which God will account his Israel, though they be not
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: circumcised Verse seventeen. From henceforth, let no man trouble me,
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: for I bear in my body the marks of the
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: Lord Jesus. Verse eighteen. Brethren, the grace of our Lord
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Jesus Christ be with your spirit amen. Verse seventeen. From henceforth,
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: let no man trouble me quarreling my call or my doctrine,
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: particularly alleging that I myself teach the necessity of circumcision.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: For in my body I bear such scars received from persecutors,
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: as are marks of my being a servant of Christ,
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: even as servants bear their Master's mark. And these received
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: by me for preaching Christ sincerely show that I have
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: not pleased the Jews in preaching circumcision Verse eighteen. Brethren,
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: all the saving benefits purchased by Christ be with your souls. Amen.
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: In chapter six, end of a paraphrase upon the Epistle
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: of Paul to the Galatians by Thomas Boston,
