Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Shane Henderson: Auckland Councillor on Eden Park winning the vote as the preferred stadium
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So eden Park won the predictable vote last night on
- 0:03Speaker 1: the council hours of debate talking about this. The key
- 0:07Speaker 1: Park Phantom Stadium will remain in the pile of maybe
- 0:11Speaker 1: one day. They're not in the clear yet though. Of
- 0:13Speaker 1: course Eden Park needs one hundred million dollars worth of
- 0:16Speaker 1: funding to actually build a new north stand, which is
- 0:19Speaker 1: the first stage of their project. So I'm joined now
- 0:21Speaker 1: by Auckland Councilor Shane Henderson, who's been across it.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Allo. Shane got a good morning.
- 0:26Speaker 1: So this was the predictable outcome, wasn't it because we
- 0:29Speaker 1: said right from the beginning no council funding. Therefore the
- 0:33Speaker 1: one that needed the least council funding gets the nod.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and we saw with the council staff report before
- 0:39Speaker 2: the meeting that Eden Park had less to do to
- 0:42Speaker 2: become viable. Obviously both did had their own issues, but
- 0:46Speaker 2: so from that perspective, you know, it wasn't too surprising
- 0:49Speaker 2: as that.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Okay, so you've said no money, so therefore obviously Nick
- 0:54Speaker 1: Seutner and his team must be going right now cap
- 0:56Speaker 1: in hand to the government making this a national problem.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, and they can have confidence in raising money with
- 1:03Speaker 2: either government or the private sector because they know that
- 1:05Speaker 2: we've got the backing of the city there as they're preferred.
- 1:08Speaker 1: That and weren't they included in the fast track They were.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so that's another league up there as well. Should
- 1:16Speaker 2: give the public a bit more confidence too.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So you think is actually going to.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Happen, Well, yes, it seems so. I mean there's a
- 1:23Speaker 2: good bid team there and I sort of stacked their
- 1:26Speaker 2: expertise to try and raise the cash required.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Meanwhile, we've got a load of stadiums in Auckland, three
- 1:32Speaker 1: owned by you and one that is private. The private
- 1:35Speaker 1: one is getting the big nod here, and we're still
- 1:37Speaker 1: no closer to rationalizing all of this.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, actually yesterday we passed the vote on that
- 1:42Speaker 2: as well, essentially kept starting a stadium investment plan which
- 1:46Speaker 2: should hopefully guide future planning and future decision making for
- 1:50Speaker 2: stadiums in the city. So it was a huge day
- 1:52Speaker 2: for the council.
- 1:53Speaker 1: So is this an investment plan for a future stadium
- 1:57Speaker 1: or an investment plan to just knock some down and
- 2:00Speaker 1: then fixed some up.
- 2:01Speaker 2: No, it's an investment plan for the stadiums that we
- 2:04Speaker 2: already have. So we need some decision making principles to
- 2:07Speaker 2: guide that future, and so we've done that yesterday.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Well the council actually build a permanent stands on the
- 2:14Speaker 1: south of Mount smart because frankly, looking at all that
- 2:17Speaker 1: scaffolding is a bit embarrassing.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Yeah, well that'd be one of the decisions we'll have
- 2:21Speaker 2: to make in the near future. So yeah, it's an
- 2:23Speaker 2: exciting space. But as you say, look at really is
- 2:26Speaker 2: the beginning of the conversation rather than the end.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Okay, the beginning of a conversation, a conversation we've been
- 2:34Speaker 1: having forever, mate. This is exactly the same conversation we
- 2:36Speaker 1: had in twenty eleven during the Rugby World Cup when
- 2:38Speaker 1: the government offered a half a billion dollars in all comment.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Oh no, that seems like far too much work.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Oh mate. We've been having the conversation of for decades
- 2:46Speaker 2: of the setting and I think a lot of people
- 2:48Speaker 2: are pretty sick of it now. But I hope that
- 2:51Speaker 2: this National Stadium conversation is the bit that we can
- 2:53Speaker 2: put to dead as of yesterday. So that's a good start,
- 2:56Speaker 2: all right, Well done.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Thank you so much Shane Henderson for waking up early and.
