- 0:00Speaker 1: While Moto GPI went vintage for.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Their seventy fifth birthday celebrations, it wasn't just deliveries that
- 0:06Speaker 2: caught our attention this weekend. The Beast is back on
- 0:09Speaker 2: top with not just one, but two victories under his belt.
- 0:13Speaker 2: As the championship title fight continues on and with only
- 0:16Speaker 2: two points now separating the top two, could we see
- 0:19Speaker 2: another du caddie righter edge his way into the mix.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I'm your host, Rnita Vmulen and joining me is the
- 0:26Speaker 2: Wizard of Two Wheels and mister Matt Clayton.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Matt. Are we seeing a new na A Bashanini in
- 0:32Speaker 1: the second half of this season?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Yeah? Hi, Roneta, Hi everyone? Are we seeing a new
- 0:37Speaker 3: na A Bastianini. I'd say we're just seeing the old
- 0:39Speaker 3: na A Bastianini. He's re emerged. Maybe it's something to
- 0:42Speaker 3: do with the vintage rowdy decided to come back and
- 0:45Speaker 3: give us a bit of a blast from the past.
- 0:46Speaker 3: But the thing with Anaa when he gets to the
- 0:49Speaker 3: front of races is there's he does it one way
- 0:52Speaker 3: in that he's always the best guy in the last
- 0:55Speaker 3: half of races. He knows that the rest of the
- 0:57Speaker 3: grid know it. We all know it watching at home.
- 1:00Speaker 3: No one can do anything about it. And when he's
- 1:03Speaker 3: on like he was over the weekend at Silverston, he's
- 1:06Speaker 3: almost unbeatable in those late race situations. But I don't
- 1:09Speaker 3: know about you. The thing that surprised me, well two things. A.
- 1:12Speaker 3: He won the sprint because the sprints, normally, by the
- 1:14Speaker 3: way ANNAA rides, are about half a race too short
- 1:17Speaker 3: for the way he likes to race. That's the first
- 1:20Speaker 3: time he's even been on a podium in a sprint,
- 1:22Speaker 3: which is kind of crazy. I mean, I only we've
- 1:24Speaker 3: been going with this format since the start of last year,
- 1:26Speaker 3: and he missed so much of last year injured. But
- 1:29Speaker 3: to find that's the first time he's even made the
- 1:31Speaker 3: top three in a half distance race. That's pretty crazy
- 1:33Speaker 3: halfway through the second year of a format, isn't it.
- 1:36Speaker 2: It is insane, And I wasn't expecting it leading up
- 1:40Speaker 2: to this week. And I don't even think I put
- 1:41Speaker 2: an AA in my top three or any of my
- 1:44Speaker 2: podium picks. And he just came out and was fast
- 1:47Speaker 2: from the get going. Like you said, it's so uncharacteristic
- 1:50Speaker 2: of him to be like that. So maybe there's something there.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Maybe this track just suited him. I don't know, but
- 1:57Speaker 2: I'm happy that we're seeing him overtake Mark the championship.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Now we're seeing him edge closer and seeing that, like
- 2:04Speaker 2: you said, the true ane Bashanini, not someone who has
- 2:08Speaker 2: riddled with injuries and previous mishaps that now we're seeing
- 2:12Speaker 2: him back on top. Well.
- 2:14Speaker 3: The cool part about him being up the front too,
- 2:15Speaker 3: is I think he does it differently to the way
- 2:18Speaker 3: Banyaira and Martin do because they've each got this sort
- 2:20Speaker 3: of distinctive style. Now I think we've said this in
- 2:22Speaker 3: previous episodes. I think over one lap juge Martin is
- 2:25Speaker 3: the gold standard emotor GP. He's the fastest guy over
- 2:28Speaker 3: one lap. We know his approach. Banyaya's kind of you know,
- 2:32Speaker 3: he's like the professor, you know, he calculates the races
- 2:35Speaker 3: and he knows what he's going to do strategically, so
- 2:37Speaker 3: he follows a very structured plan. Bashyanin he's got this
- 2:41Speaker 3: late race tie saving trick that we talked about. So
- 2:43Speaker 3: you've got three riders on the same bike. They're all
- 2:46Speaker 3: trying to get to the same place, but they're all
- 2:48Speaker 3: doing it differently, and that's the point of intrigue for me.
- 2:50Speaker 3: There's more than one way to skin a cat here,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and there's going to be days when Nanaa's trick is
- 2:54Speaker 3: pretty much unbeatable, just like we've seen days this year
- 2:57Speaker 3: where Banyaya's plan is I'm getting to the front and
- 3:00Speaker 3: good luck keeping up with me. He did that at
- 3:01Speaker 3: as and he did that at Migello, and then Martine
- 3:03Speaker 3: will just have these races where he does twitty qualifying
- 3:06Speaker 3: WAPs and leaves the rest of him and he's in
- 3:07Speaker 3: the dust. So three really different approaches to try and
- 3:10Speaker 3: achieve the same goal. The fact that is what forty
- 3:13Speaker 3: nine points I think back in the championship, so more
- 3:16Speaker 3: than a full race weekend. But you know we're talking
- 3:18Speaker 3: here in the first week of August. We think, oh,
- 3:20Speaker 3: the season's you know, two thirds over at this point,
- 3:22Speaker 3: we've got half the season to go. So he absolutely
- 3:26Speaker 3: has time to do this. He has motivation to do
- 3:29Speaker 3: it because obviously Dicati said no, actually we don't want you,
- 3:32Speaker 3: we want that other six time world champion guy alongside
- 3:35Speaker 3: Peco next year. We've got half the season to go.
- 3:37Speaker 3: There's so many points still at play. Well, I think
- 3:40Speaker 3: it's ten races in fourteen weeks to finish the season,
- 3:42Speaker 3: so put the coffee on on Sunday nights. But it's
- 3:45Speaker 3: great for the championship because there's three guys that are
- 3:47Speaker 3: absolutely mathematically in it to win it at this point.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You mentioned there that they are all on the same bikes.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And one thing that I thought was interesting going into
- 3:55Speaker 2: this weekend, if we can backtrack a bit, was Johe
- 3:58Speaker 2: Martine has said that he uses a different part to
- 4:00Speaker 2: the rest of the doucaddes to assist with breaking. He
- 4:03Speaker 2: feels like it gives him a bit more front end confidence,
- 4:06Speaker 2: and this weekend he decided that after the front end
- 4:09Speaker 2: tuck at Saxon Ring in Germany, to try the same
- 4:12Speaker 2: part as what Peco uses, and clearly that seemed to
- 4:15Speaker 2: be working for him. He said that it doesn't provide
- 4:17Speaker 2: as much stabilization for the bike. He feels that it
- 4:21Speaker 2: affects it in that way, but he was fast from
- 4:24Speaker 2: the get go. Talking about the main race, it was
- 4:27Speaker 2: Peco who did his usual try to get out the front.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Like you said, Aleish was there. He pushed Aleish wide
- 4:33Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden, juge Martin's just come
- 4:35Speaker 2: through and that's when he started to get his lead.
- 4:38Speaker 1: We're talking about the sprint. Yeah, that's the sprint, isn't it.
- 4:41Speaker 2: So I think there's there's Peco who's really analyzing everything.
- 4:46Speaker 2: But we can see that Martine he's really fighting for this.
- 4:49Speaker 1: You know, he's not giving it up at all.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well, the easy narrative with this, of course, and I'll
- 4:55Speaker 3: put my hand up here because I was guilty of
- 4:56Speaker 3: saying it. I kind of thought after he had given
- 4:59Speaker 3: up the chain ship bleed at Saxon Ring, given that
- 5:02Speaker 3: Jorges leaving to one manufacturer and Pramaka leaving to another manufacturer,
- 5:06Speaker 3: I kind of thought that might be it in that
- 5:08Speaker 3: Pecko's not a guy who tends to make a lot
- 5:10Speaker 3: of mistakes, and then of course he goes and crashes
- 5:12Speaker 3: in the sprint. So genius comment by me, But I
- 5:14Speaker 3: kind of thought once Jorge had lost that championship leader,
- 5:17Speaker 3: it would be so hard for him to get it
- 5:19Speaker 3: back for reasons of motivation and technical innovation. But what
- 5:23Speaker 3: was really interesting to me, I don't know whether you
- 5:25Speaker 3: picked up on this. I reckon a lot of his
- 5:27Speaker 3: host race stuff on Sunday was pretty I would say rehearsed,
- 5:31Speaker 3: but he clearly had something in his head that he
- 5:33Speaker 3: wanted to get across, that he had ridden smarter and
- 5:36Speaker 3: that he had settled for second rather than trying to
- 5:38Speaker 3: push and get the lee back against Bastianini in those
- 5:42Speaker 3: last two laps, because normally in that situation, he's a guy.
- 5:45Speaker 3: If you attack him, he'll attack you harder. And he
- 5:48Speaker 3: kind of played the long game. And it was really
- 5:50Speaker 3: noticeable that, yes, you're talking about a guy speaking in
- 5:53Speaker 3: a second or third language. He used the word intelligent
- 5:56Speaker 3: about five times in his post race press debrief today.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Intelligent today, I owe an intelligent race. Today. I took
- 6:02Speaker 3: the intelligent option, and I thought, Okay, is this a
- 6:05Speaker 3: guy who sounds like he's trying to convince himself to
- 6:07Speaker 3: maybe sort of, you know, roll back a little bit
- 6:09Speaker 3: and ride a bit smarter. Is this something that's been
- 6:12Speaker 3: coached into him? Or is this the way he thinks
- 6:15Speaker 3: I can't just win this championship on outright speed. Maybe
- 6:18Speaker 3: I need to change tack a little bit. So it
- 6:20Speaker 3: was telling to me just the fact that I keep
- 6:22Speaker 3: hearing him say that word. It's not a word that
- 6:24Speaker 3: he's generally said, and it's certainly not an action that
- 6:27Speaker 3: he's done in previous races, so I wondered if that
- 6:30Speaker 3: was something he just drummed into his own head before
- 6:32Speaker 3: the race weekend. It's like, I'm going to adopt this approach. Now,
- 6:35Speaker 3: I do have trust issues with Jujo Martine. I'm going
- 6:38Speaker 3: to admit it, because just every time you think he
- 6:40Speaker 3: might have turned a corner and realized, you know, maybe
- 6:42Speaker 3: going at ten tenths for a relap isn't the greatest idea,
- 6:45Speaker 3: he'll do something like Saxon Ring. So I need more
- 6:48Speaker 3: evidence before I'm completely prepared to change my chum. But
- 6:51Speaker 3: here we are at the halfway stage of the championship,
- 6:53Speaker 3: and look, it's basically a hard reset because the margin
- 6:56Speaker 3: is so narrow at the top. But he's the writer
- 6:58Speaker 3: on top, so fair play to him.
- 7:00Speaker 1: He's the rider on top.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But I feel like, you know, we spoke about Anaya
- 7:03Speaker 2: will touch on these guys Peko and Joe Martin and
- 7:07Speaker 2: Mark Marquez for sure, but the man who was on
- 7:09Speaker 2: pole this weekend, I kind of thought that he would
- 7:12Speaker 2: be closer to the top. I didn't know about pole,
- 7:16Speaker 2: but Alisia Spargar on the Aprillia set that fast lap,
- 7:20Speaker 2: and obviously every race this year they're setting new lap records,
- 7:23Speaker 2: so we're expecting that, but I wasn't expecting an Aprillia
- 7:26Speaker 2: on pole in Silverstone.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Yeah, look, he has got good form there, to be fair.
- 7:31Speaker 3: I mean, he took a podium there a couple of
- 7:33Speaker 3: years ago, obviously won there with that last lap pass
- 7:35Speaker 3: of Peco in twenty three. But that's a track layout
- 7:38Speaker 3: that that bike and particularly him, I think works really well.
- 7:42Speaker 3: But I think even he knew amazing pole position on Saturday,
- 7:46Speaker 3: no question, and you know it did really well over
- 7:48Speaker 3: the weekend relative to what he's fighting against, which I
- 7:51Speaker 3: think we'll probably get to. But that bike on that
- 7:54Speaker 3: circuit always figured to be kind of the interloper, like
- 7:57Speaker 3: the one that was going to get in the way
- 7:58Speaker 3: of just a complete Dicati clean sweep. There'll be other
- 8:01Speaker 3: tracks where that's not the case. But I know we're
- 8:04Speaker 3: going to touch on this at some point because I
- 8:05Speaker 3: can't see you getting through the next twenty minutes without
- 8:07Speaker 3: mentioning it. If we're going to put votes in for
- 8:09Speaker 3: the best livery of the retro liveries. Over the course
- 8:12Speaker 3: of the weekend, we knew that a Prillier We're going
- 8:14Speaker 3: to go the Max Biagy tribute route. But how cool
- 8:18Speaker 3: was that? Livery? If I'm putting votes in, that's clearly
- 8:20Speaker 3: three votes for me. I'm not sure about two to one.
- 8:22Speaker 3: But as soon as I saw that, I went, ah,
- 8:24Speaker 3: these guys have nailed the brief. So he looked fast
- 8:26Speaker 3: as he was fast. The fact that he was the
- 8:28Speaker 3: only non decatty in the top eight, I believe at
- 8:32Speaker 3: the end of the race testament to how well he rode.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I actually thought he rode a really, really smart race.
- 8:37Speaker 3: But that is about the limitation of that bike at
- 8:40Speaker 3: the moment.
- 8:41Speaker 1: It is exactly right.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Yeah, we will touch on Livery, so those listening for
- 8:44Speaker 2: that just hang on a bit.
- 8:45Speaker 1: We've got to touch talk about racing first.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I got too excited about liveries.
- 8:50Speaker 1: It's fine, it's fine.
- 8:52Speaker 2: What I'm finding so fascinating with the a Prillier camp
- 8:56Speaker 2: at the moment is it always seems like there's one
- 8:59Speaker 2: me two of them aren't there, but it's never the
- 9:02Speaker 2: whole group together. So, like you said, Aleish was strong,
- 9:06Speaker 2: Maverick wasn't as right. And then the previous race we
- 9:09Speaker 2: saw Ral Fernandez and then Miguel Olivera, and Miguel finally
- 9:13Speaker 2: got on the podium, So I think that really up.
- 9:16Speaker 2: They're starting to get it, they're starting to put those
- 9:19Speaker 2: pieces together, but it's not entirely there yet. I think
- 9:23Speaker 2: the new writers next year are definitely going to help.
- 9:25Speaker 2: But what is up with Maverick? This is one thing
- 9:27Speaker 2: I want to talk about. Is one weekend he'll be
- 9:30Speaker 2: up the front, he'll be flying, and the next weekend
- 9:32Speaker 2: he's way back down the end of the field.
- 9:34Speaker 1: It just seems like there's no consistency there.
- 9:37Speaker 3: What is up with Maverick sounds like a podcast series,
- 9:40Speaker 3: not just an individual episode of a podcast. You could
- 9:42Speaker 3: literally do about three hours on this, but this is
- 9:44Speaker 3: just the story of the guy's career. The high points
- 9:47Speaker 3: are so high and the low points, like there's some
- 9:49Speaker 3: weekends where you go, oh, yeah, Maverick Vidalez was in
- 9:52Speaker 3: the race, because you don't see him on the coverage
- 9:54Speaker 3: and you look down and you're just go down, down, down, down, YouTube,
- 9:57Speaker 3: Oh he's fourteenth. And this is just the story of
- 9:59Speaker 3: his time at a prilier. It's kind of funny actually,
- 10:01Speaker 3: because a prillier to me, seems to be like a
- 10:05Speaker 3: bike that has a really really high peak in the
- 10:07Speaker 3: It's a docti challenging peak. We see it in qualifying occasionally,
- 10:10Speaker 3: we've seen it in some races. It may go down
- 10:13Speaker 3: as the only bike this year to win a race
- 10:15Speaker 3: that's not a Ducati if things keep going the way
- 10:17Speaker 3: they are after Maverick one in the Circuit of the Americas.
- 10:20Speaker 3: But you know what is up with Maverick That round
- 10:22Speaker 3: at Kota earlier on this season. He was amazing the
- 10:26Speaker 3: whole weekend and then he got pretty beaten up on
- 10:28Speaker 3: the first lap. I think he was tenth after that one,
- 10:30Speaker 3: and normally just like, oh, well, that's the last we're
- 10:33Speaker 3: going to see a Maverick today. He was so on
- 10:35Speaker 3: that weekend that he got back to the front really
- 10:37Speaker 3: quickly and it's cleared off. So that's where I think
- 10:39Speaker 3: he's so frustrating for you and I do the same thing.
- 10:42Speaker 3: The peaks are so high, the preliest peaks are so high,
- 10:46Speaker 3: But can we have a weekend where there's more than
- 10:48Speaker 3: one of them up there or you know, just a
- 10:50Speaker 3: sustaining sort of assault, because I think that bike is
- 10:53Speaker 3: pretty clearly the second best bike in the field right now.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Actually I'm going to phrase that it's the third best
- 10:58Speaker 3: bike in the field. I think the GP twenty four
- 10:59Speaker 3: dickies on one level, the GP twenty three Decaddies on
- 11:02Speaker 3: the next level, and then Aprillia and then everybody else
- 11:05Speaker 3: down to poor old Honda. But look, the peak of
- 11:08Speaker 3: Aprillia is super high. It would not surprise me in
- 11:11Speaker 3: the slightest if Maverick does something totally random and finishes
- 11:14Speaker 3: second or even jags a race win before the season's out,
- 11:17Speaker 3: before he leaves. But if you're looking for consistency, you've
- 11:20Speaker 3: you and I have come to the wrong place. And look, Katie,
- 11:23Speaker 3: em know what they're getting with him. They know he's
- 11:25Speaker 3: a guy who can occasionally snipe for victories. But I
- 11:27Speaker 3: mean he's what, he's nearly thirty years old. Now he
- 11:29Speaker 3: kind of hard to teach an old dog Nutrix at
- 11:32Speaker 3: this point, isn't it?
- 11:33Speaker 1: It is?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Unfortunately, but the old dog like was on pole this
- 11:37Speaker 2: weekend and he did get third in the sprint. So
- 11:40Speaker 2: our sprint podium was an Airbashnini who took out the
- 11:43Speaker 2: whole weekend ahead of Johe Martin and then Alisha Spargo
- 11:46Speaker 2: on the Aprillia. But the sprint was interesting because we
- 11:51Speaker 2: mentioned earlier Peco crashed, Mark Marquez crashed, and then then
- 11:54Speaker 2: there was that weird first corner incident between Morbidelli and
- 11:59Speaker 2: Bizaki that I wanted to touch on, because Morbidelli did
- 12:01Speaker 2: get that long lap penalty for the main race. In
- 12:05Speaker 2: his post race interview, he's going it wasn't irresponsible writing
- 12:10Speaker 2: it was, it was just a racing incident. He's saying that, Maverick,
- 12:13Speaker 2: you were just talking about breaked earlier, so of course to
- 12:16Speaker 2: him to change his breaking, he basically just grabbed too
- 12:19Speaker 2: much of the front brake, the rear kicked out, and
- 12:21Speaker 2: then off he went, colliding into Marcoberzeki, and while Bazeki
- 12:24Speaker 2: did kind of get beaten up quite a lot, I
- 12:27Speaker 2: think that I don't know if that long lap penalty
- 12:30Speaker 2: was justified or if it was just an oncurring thing
- 12:34Speaker 2: like what happens in traffic on a normal.
- 12:36Speaker 3: Street, right, Yeah, yeah, I mean it's just sometimes racing
- 12:39Speaker 3: incidents are racing incidents. It was interesting he said he
- 12:41Speaker 3: accepted the blame but not the responsibility, and that yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 3: he was the guy who skittled bed Zeki. That's pretty
- 12:46Speaker 3: clear the reason he did it. So Maverick got this
- 12:49Speaker 3: really poor start, sort of loitering in the middle of
- 12:51Speaker 3: the track, and you know you saw, you saw from
- 12:54Speaker 3: the aerial shot how quickly Morbidelli was coming at the
- 12:58Speaker 3: pack into that first quarter stof under fair way back.
- 13:00Speaker 3: He looked, he looked like he was too hot to
- 13:02Speaker 3: turn one, to be fair. But how much of that
- 13:05Speaker 3: is when you look up and you see there's a
- 13:08Speaker 3: bike dawdling and you've got to make a decision go
- 13:10Speaker 3: left or right? That changes your entry speech. It's very
- 13:12Speaker 3: fast term one at Silveston as well, not just a
- 13:15Speaker 3: touch on the brake really, So he was kind of
- 13:18Speaker 3: in an impossible situation because another rider had started slowly.
- 13:21Speaker 3: But sometimes I don't know if you can have a
- 13:24Speaker 3: racing incident. I mean, his race ended, Berzeki's race ended,
- 13:29Speaker 3: and both in the medical center. I don't necessarily know
- 13:32Speaker 3: if it needed a punishment for the race now. I'm
- 13:34Speaker 3: not sure it changed Frankie's life that much on Sunday
- 13:37Speaker 3: because he finished tenth anyway, But I don't know about you.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Sometimes it's like you don't have to put a penalty
- 13:43Speaker 3: in place just because of an outcome. It seemed like
- 13:44Speaker 3: it was a bit predetermined for me. He was unlucky.
- 13:48Speaker 3: He didn't change his weekend, but Zeki had a very
- 13:49Speaker 3: strong main race on the Sunday, but just one of
- 13:52Speaker 3: those ones. I think a collective shrug of the shoulders
- 13:55Speaker 3: and say, look, no one's having fun here, no one
- 13:57Speaker 3: enjoyed this, Let's just move on. I'm not sure it
- 13:59Speaker 3: was a long lap, to be honest, Yeah.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I agree.
- 14:03Speaker 2: But one thing that I feel like the stewards do
- 14:05Speaker 2: need to touch on is going back to qualifying is
- 14:09Speaker 2: the towing situation.
- 14:10Speaker 1: And it was mentioned on the broadcast.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Sorry, it's mentioned on the broadcast that you know, Simon
- 14:17Speaker 2: Crayfar is jumping into the seats next year, so hopefully
- 14:20Speaker 2: there'll be some changes. And Peco was very vocal about
- 14:23Speaker 2: it in Park fer May saying that these guys are
- 14:26Speaker 2: professional writers, they don't need to be doing silly things
- 14:29Speaker 2: like that.
- 14:30Speaker 1: And look at the situation.
- 14:32Speaker 2: That Mark did when he was behind I think it
- 14:34Speaker 2: was Digia and he's throwing his hands up because Digit's
- 14:37Speaker 2: going slower, when really he was just trying to get
- 14:39Speaker 2: behind Pecko. I agree with Peco on this. I think
- 14:43Speaker 2: that it doesn't need to be like this. I would
- 14:46Speaker 2: love to see like a whole completely different system come
- 14:49Speaker 2: in for qualifying, maybe even go back to the old
- 14:51Speaker 2: school super Bowl laps like they used to do, and
- 14:53Speaker 2: we'll superbikes back in the day. But what's your thoughts
- 14:56Speaker 2: on the situation? And then Pecko's post qualif in comments.
- 15:01Speaker 3: It's funny. Peco's quite the idealist with these sorts of things.
- 15:04Speaker 3: It's like, no, this is unsporting and I don't think
- 15:06Speaker 3: it's fair, and I'm going to say what I have
- 15:07Speaker 3: to say about it. If you want to listen to
- 15:09Speaker 3: something really funny, brow Costas posts qualifying debrief with tech
- 15:14Speaker 3: three KTM. He's a young Spanish kid. He's got a
- 15:17Speaker 3: pretty good command of English profanities. Because every second word
- 15:19Speaker 3: began with F in that it was absolutely hilarious, miss anybody.
- 15:22Speaker 3: But it's one of those things for me, I feel
- 15:25Speaker 3: that we have this conversation like not you and I necessarily,
- 15:28Speaker 3: but the motor GP community has this towing conversation three
- 15:31Speaker 3: or four times a year, and everyone says, oh, it's terrible,
- 15:35Speaker 3: that it shouldn't happen, and it's this and that's that,
- 15:36Speaker 3: and then nothing changes and we kick the can down
- 15:38Speaker 3: the road and have the conversation again at some point,
- 15:41Speaker 3: And it's one of those things that until you make
- 15:44Speaker 3: it illegal, then riders are going to keep doing it
- 15:47Speaker 3: because there is there's definitely an advantage to doing it
- 15:51Speaker 3: if you're not on a bike that's capable of doing
- 15:53Speaker 3: the lap. And we're seeing probably less of it this
- 15:54Speaker 3: year than last because Mark is not riding a Repsol
- 15:57Speaker 3: hon there anymore. And when he was on a repsol
- 15:59Speaker 3: hold that he knew he couldn't get the lap type
- 16:01Speaker 3: out of it. The only way he could get himself
- 16:03Speaker 3: into Q two was look down the pit lane, latch
- 16:05Speaker 3: himself onto a decade and follow them around in Q
- 16:08Speaker 3: two and get to the third row or something. So
- 16:10Speaker 3: I think we're seeing less of it this year, but
- 16:13Speaker 3: it's one of those things that if everyone hates it,
- 16:15Speaker 3: then change it. And if you don't change it, then
- 16:18Speaker 3: you can't complain, you know what I mean. It's like
- 16:19Speaker 3: one of those things in that there's an opportunity to
- 16:22Speaker 3: change it. Do we go the super pole route? Like
- 16:24Speaker 3: you were saying, maybe a way to do it? This
- 16:27Speaker 3: is an idea. I hope everyone at DAWN is listening
- 16:28Speaker 3: to this. Why don't we pick a few races each
- 16:31Speaker 3: year and we just designate them as super Pole qualifying
- 16:34Speaker 3: and we sort of dip, a bit of a toe
- 16:35Speaker 3: in the water. It's a bit like we've done with sprints.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Let's just say before the season, these six rounds are
- 16:40Speaker 3: going to be super pole qualifying. Let's do that, and
- 16:43Speaker 3: then you've got a working, live sample set of all right,
- 16:46Speaker 3: this works, the fans liked it, they didn't like it, whatever,
- 16:49Speaker 3: and then maybe that's the way we go in the future.
- 16:51Speaker 3: I don't think you just want to ban the normal
- 16:53Speaker 3: qualifying format as it is because maybe the super pole
- 16:56Speaker 3: thing doesn't work. We don't know. Why don't we experiment
- 16:59Speaker 3: a little bit with it, but the whole conversation with it. Look, personally,
- 17:02Speaker 3: I hate it because let's just see guys do a
- 17:04Speaker 3: lap and the drip down effect. It's particularly bad in
- 17:08Speaker 3: Moto three, not as bad in Motor two. But when
- 17:10Speaker 3: you see some of the Motor three qualifying, which is
- 17:12Speaker 3: just a nonsense frankly, with like fifteen people off the
- 17:15Speaker 3: racing line, everyone looking over their shoulders, it sets a
- 17:17Speaker 3: bad example for the kids coming up through the lower classes,
- 17:21Speaker 3: and also at Motor three level because there's so many
- 17:23Speaker 3: of them, it's actually really dangerous. And there's that's the
- 17:26Speaker 3: factor with all of this in that if Moto GPS
- 17:28Speaker 3: being held up as the standard here that everyone needs
- 17:31Speaker 3: to follow, motor GP needs to set a better example
- 17:34Speaker 3: for the other classes. I don't like that aspect of it,
- 17:37Speaker 3: but maybe we sort of try this super Bowl thing
- 17:39Speaker 3: for a bit. I think you might be onto something there.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I think you need to just email Carmelo Espeletta at
- 17:44Speaker 3: dawn and doctors sit him an email. He'll be all over.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It, for sure. I'll do that, definitely good.
- 17:52Speaker 2: I wanted to also touch quickly because there was so
- 17:55Speaker 2: much that happened this weekend. There was that small clash
- 17:58Speaker 2: that happened between Pedro, Binder and Mark in the sprint.
- 18:01Speaker 2: Pedro lost the front arrow.
- 18:03Speaker 1: By the looks of it. We saw all the bits
- 18:05Speaker 1: of black flying everywhere.
- 18:07Speaker 2: And then it was funny for him to come in
- 18:08Speaker 2: post race because you did reasonably well in the sprint.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Post race and he's going the front, the front, We're like, yeah,
- 18:14Speaker 2: you've got no error on there.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Yeah, half your bikes in a gravel trap somewhere. But
- 18:20Speaker 3: isn't it interesting they spend all this money on all
- 18:22Speaker 3: these wings and what have you, and that first four
- 18:24Speaker 3: corners at Silverston where the bikes are coming back across
- 18:27Speaker 3: one another through that sort of lazy section of the
- 18:30Speaker 3: first part of the first sector. It's just you may
- 18:32Speaker 3: as well just get the dustpad and brush ready to
- 18:34Speaker 3: sweep up the carbon fiber, because there's always guys that
- 18:36Speaker 3: are uncited leaning onto other guys in those corners, and
- 18:40Speaker 3: the bikes are so wide now with all the wings on,
- 18:42Speaker 3: it's almost inevitable that you're going to lose some bits
- 18:44Speaker 3: and pieces. Jack Miller lost a bit of his in
- 18:46Speaker 3: the sprint as well, and half the time you don't
- 18:48Speaker 3: even realize you've lost it because you just take a
- 18:50Speaker 3: normal racing line and there's a bike up the inside
- 18:52Speaker 3: because of the way that circuit. But you can forget
- 18:55Speaker 3: all the wind tunnel tests and what have you for
- 18:56Speaker 3: Casey and Pedro's just done a live wind tunnel test
- 18:58Speaker 3: for them by ripping half his era. Often now we
- 19:01Speaker 3: see how the bike candles when you're missing half with
- 19:03Speaker 3: fifty percent of the winglets, it's pretty funny.
- 19:05Speaker 1: It was very funny.
- 19:06Speaker 2: But one thing that was not funny the going onto
- 19:10Speaker 2: Sunday's rays. Brad Binda with that clutch issue on the
- 19:12Speaker 2: start line.
- 19:14Speaker 1: You could just.
- 19:14Speaker 2: See him arm or just hoping that no one was
- 19:19Speaker 2: going to hit him.
- 19:21Speaker 3: That's got to be the worst feeling. You're in the
- 19:23Speaker 3: middle of the pack and you know your bike isn't
- 19:25Speaker 3: going anywhere, and all you're thinking of is there's ten
- 19:28Speaker 3: guys behind me who tucked under the bubble. The whole
- 19:31Speaker 3: shot devices engage, and I so hope that someone sees
- 19:34Speaker 3: me here, because you're so vulnerable in that situation. You
- 19:37Speaker 3: just go into a just self preservation mode at that point,
- 19:40Speaker 3: like he's trying to protect himself and all the other
- 19:42Speaker 3: riders that might be uncited, so they're the scary ones.
- 19:45Speaker 3: I was glad to see on that aerial shot that
- 19:47Speaker 3: there was a white katie and going very slowly and
- 19:49Speaker 3: no one behind him by the time we got to
- 19:51Speaker 3: turn one, because that could have been pretty ugly.
- 19:53Speaker 1: I think, Yeah.
- 19:55Speaker 2: When I was listening or doing some research on it,
- 19:57Speaker 2: T and T Sports and Michael lavity X racer and
- 20:01Speaker 2: owns the m LAB Racing team, he thinks that Katim
- 20:05Speaker 2: actually forgot to disengage the fuel saving mode because we
- 20:09Speaker 2: did notice that on the siding lap the bikes were
- 20:11Speaker 2: going so slow, right, and so he thinks something happened there,
- 20:15Speaker 2: but nothing's come out even Brad Minders said to himself,
- 20:18Speaker 2: I don't know what's happened, so I'm interested to see
- 20:22Speaker 2: if anything does get released orfully just forget about it
- 20:25Speaker 2: and move on. But we did touch on the vintage liveries.
- 20:28Speaker 2: We have to touch on those, and also just say
- 20:31Speaker 2: that our Aussie Jack Miller did finish P. Twelve this
- 20:34Speaker 2: weekend and Remy Gardner, who was the wild card and
- 20:37Speaker 2: then ended up being basically the second Yamaha where Alex
- 20:40Speaker 2: Rinn's not competing this weekend, Remy did get P.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Eighteen.
- 20:45Speaker 2: I know you said you loved the Apprelias the vintage livery.
- 20:49Speaker 2: For me, I love the Yamaha.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I really loved that old school seventeen eighties.
- 20:55Speaker 3: It's a close second for me. And the bike was cool,
- 20:58Speaker 3: But how good was the merch too? I know, if
- 21:00Speaker 3: you saw the Fabia Quaturro's hat and the mechanics th
- 21:03Speaker 3: Ri all dressed up and all the ancilliary stuff was
- 21:06Speaker 3: super cool. But you know it was interesting. Actually, I
- 21:08Speaker 3: was going to say this as a general point. With
- 21:09Speaker 3: all the liveries, how visible were the numbers because they
- 21:13Speaker 3: were put on the yellow roundels on the bike, so
- 21:15Speaker 3: you're looking at it going, because sometimes when you've got
- 21:18Speaker 3: guys that have got very similar helmets or it's hard
- 21:20Speaker 3: to determine which bike is which. Sometimes you're like, oh,
- 21:22Speaker 3: hang on, which one is this? Which one of the
- 21:24Speaker 3: aprilias is this? Or you find yourself doing that if
- 21:26Speaker 3: guys have got similar numbers or similar numbers in their
- 21:29Speaker 3: sequence of numbers, there was no sort of ambiguity as
- 21:33Speaker 3: to what you're watching and go, well, that is a
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yamaha and that is Fabio Coaturo. It was quite cool
- 21:38Speaker 3: to see how visible the numbers were. Of course, good
- 21:40Speaker 3: luck getting that by twenty twenty four Motor GP commercial departments.
- 21:44Speaker 3: That's extra space you can stick a sponsor logo, isn't it.
- 21:46Speaker 3: So it's not going to happen. But I quite like
- 21:48Speaker 3: that aspect of it. But wasn't it cool to see
- 21:51Speaker 3: all those bikes out for boarding warm up on Sunday
- 21:53Speaker 3: and then the ray. So my only disappointment was they
- 21:56Speaker 3: gone to all this effort for the seventy five years thing.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Shouldn't we have just had the same liveries for the
- 22:01Speaker 3: whole weekend rather than just bring them out on Sunday,
- 22:03Speaker 3: Because you know what happens with the race. You tend
- 22:05Speaker 3: to watch what's going on at the front. I reckon
- 22:06Speaker 3: there were some of them that we barely saw because
- 22:08Speaker 3: they weren't really in the coverage because over the course
- 22:10Speaker 3: of twenty laps are out of the main shot. So
- 22:12Speaker 3: that was a bit of a shame. But I love
- 22:14Speaker 3: the initiative and I love the fact that everyone was
- 22:17Speaker 3: on board and the mechanics in the old sixties overalls, yeah,
- 22:21Speaker 3: covered in pretend oil and bits and pieces was quite
- 22:23Speaker 3: of a nice touch too.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I agree.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I think I love the cashtro one that ELSR did.
- 22:28Speaker 2: I think that even the Repsol Hondas they looked great,
- 22:31Speaker 2: but we don't see them because they're down the back
- 22:33Speaker 2: of the field. You know.
- 22:35Speaker 1: One thing that I was kind of a bit disappointed
- 22:37Speaker 1: about is it felt like to me, the factory Ducati
- 22:40Speaker 1: team kind of didn't put in that much effort. It's
- 22:44Speaker 1: like we're talking about the.
- 22:45Speaker 2: Retro, the overall sets and even some of the teams
- 22:49Speaker 2: who had like different uniforms on, but it just felt
- 22:52Speaker 2: like Ju Catty just kind of did it for the
- 22:54Speaker 2: sake of it, And to me it's disappointing because at
- 22:58Speaker 2: was it migell Or where they had the blue for
- 23:01Speaker 2: the Italy. They all had their names on the back,
- 23:03Speaker 2: the whole team dressed up and I was like, well
- 23:06Speaker 2: you did that from Majello, why.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Are you not doing it for here?
- 23:08Speaker 2: That was my only disappointment because I would have loved
- 23:11Speaker 2: to have seen a bit more from them.
- 23:13Speaker 3: Yeah, agreed. They had the Italian soccer strip going on
- 23:15Speaker 3: at Migello. Do you remember last year at Missano they
- 23:17Speaker 3: had the yellow bike as well. That was pretty cool.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Last year was beautiful, but you know, they kind of
- 23:22Speaker 3: mailed it in a little bit. I reckon with the
- 23:24Speaker 3: Maybe the budget for one off liveries was a bit
- 23:27Speaker 3: low after what they'd done at Migello with the Italian
- 23:30Speaker 3: football team hit. Maybe that was it, but it was
- 23:33Speaker 3: more noticeable because they didn't They probably made less of
- 23:36Speaker 3: an effort than the other manufacturers, and their bikes are
- 23:38Speaker 3: up the front the whole time, so it kind of
- 23:40Speaker 3: just looked like a fairly standard race. I enjoyed the
- 23:42Speaker 3: primac livery. That was kind of a nice touch with
- 23:44Speaker 3: the Anjelgnetto helmet that Jorge had. But yeah, the Factory
- 23:47Speaker 3: Decadi team winning the championship and probably last in the
- 23:51Speaker 3: retro liveries race over the weekend, so I guess they
- 23:54Speaker 3: got their priorities right. But it wasn't great for TV,
- 23:56Speaker 3: was it?
- 23:56Speaker 1: It wasn't great. Well, what was cool for TV is
- 23:58Speaker 1: ex Rada Paula Spark.
- 24:00Speaker 2: We don't get the coverage, but he is one of
- 24:01Speaker 2: the pundons on does in the Spanish company who does
- 24:06Speaker 2: it and he dressed up as one of the Shelby
- 24:08Speaker 2: brothers from Peggy Blinders and I thought that was very.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Cool, so appropriate for the UK as well. I love
- 24:14Speaker 3: the hat. The hat was fantastic. I don't reckon he's
- 24:17Speaker 3: given the hat back. He might keep that one for
- 24:19Speaker 3: you know, you never know when you might need one
- 24:20Speaker 3: of those. It was it was super cool to see that.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Just generally people got into the spirit of things and
- 24:25Speaker 3: you know, it was a really really great tribute. I
- 24:27Speaker 3: thought the sport did a good job and it was
- 24:29Speaker 3: just at that circuit too. It was just nice to
- 24:31Speaker 3: see the nostalgia card being played.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Yeah exactly, you know, the wreaths on the podium, Michelin
- 24:38Speaker 2: with the vintage hats and the jackets.
- 24:40Speaker 1: I think that side of it was brilliant and I.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Think going forward, so I think they should do something
- 24:46Speaker 2: like this every year if it doesn't have to be
- 24:48Speaker 2: a retro round, but something for that, it just makes
- 24:50Speaker 2: it exciting.
- 24:51Speaker 1: It builds more hype into it. You know.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Well, I'm from a commercial point of view. It's going
- 24:55Speaker 3: to sell some merch as well. Let's not to be honest,
- 24:57Speaker 3: I think we should have one designated round per year.
- 24:59Speaker 3: But the social media video I saw over the weekend,
- 25:02Speaker 3: did you see an AA Bastidini trying to use the
- 25:04Speaker 3: breath as a hul hoop? Yes, in the garage after
- 25:07Speaker 3: the race. He got it eventually, it probably wasn't the
- 25:09Speaker 3: easiest thing to do. He whooping with it. Yeah, classic,
- 25:12Speaker 3: and it was very very funny of all the things
- 25:14Speaker 3: that are Oh but use this as ahul hoop in
- 25:16Speaker 3: the celebration spot.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Yeah classic and ayre as well to have the actors
- 25:20Speaker 2: from Harry Potter there and him doing the one thing.
- 25:23Speaker 2: And he's like a massive Harry Potter fan as well.
- 25:25Speaker 2: His dog is named Hagrid, so it just what a
- 25:29Speaker 2: weekend for him. It just completely tied in together. Was perfect,
- 25:33Speaker 2: but absolutely Moto GP. Before we round up this pod,
- 25:37Speaker 2: we obviously have to touch.
- 25:39Speaker 1: On Moto two.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Jake Dixon won his home race bound Ossie Senna sna aegis.
- 25:44Speaker 2: He got tenth, which is not too bad. He's actually
- 25:47Speaker 2: never raced out Silverstone before well.
- 25:50Speaker 3: And considering where he started to I mean twentieth on
- 25:52Speaker 3: the grid, so it looked like his weekend was pretty
- 25:55Speaker 3: bla through Friday and Saturday. The best thing that happened
- 25:57Speaker 3: to him before the race was that heat and outsid.
- 25:59Speaker 3: He re signed with the Liquimali team for another season
- 26:01Speaker 3: next year, which was great, but from twentieth think you
- 26:04Speaker 3: think there could be a tough road from there, but
- 26:06Speaker 3: he made up six places on the first lap and
- 26:08Speaker 3: that really got him into a position to capitalize. A
- 26:11Speaker 3: lot of guys threw it down the road in that race,
- 26:12Speaker 3: Joe Roberts, and you had Sergio Garcia right down the
- 26:15Speaker 3: back at the start, so I thought that was a
- 26:17Speaker 3: hugely meritorious effort. That was a really tricky race. And
- 26:21Speaker 3: to come through from twenty if you think scrounge a
- 26:24Speaker 3: point here or there, to have a top ten finish,
- 26:26Speaker 3: great result for him. And I mean, obviously you spoke
- 26:28Speaker 3: to him in the mid season break. I love the
- 26:31Speaker 3: trajectory his season's going on at the moment. He just
- 26:33Speaker 3: seems to be getting more and more confident, as you
- 26:36Speaker 3: were saying, he's going to these tracks for the first
- 26:37Speaker 3: time and he's been super competitive. So when the season
- 26:41Speaker 3: swings back to through Asia and Australia, when he gets
- 26:43Speaker 3: some more familiar circuits, I don't think it would be
- 26:47Speaker 3: a surprise if we see him right on the edge
- 26:48Speaker 3: of a podium before the end of this season. I mean, god,
- 26:51Speaker 3: imagine at Philip Island. That would be quite something. But
- 26:53Speaker 3: I love the way his season's progressing and hugely deserved
- 26:56Speaker 3: to get that second season in the World Championship, and
- 26:58Speaker 3: he'll definitely better better for this first one.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, he even said that he's trying to visualize
- 27:03Speaker 2: a podium at Philip Island.
- 27:05Speaker 1: He goes, now, I'm on track. People know who I am.
- 27:08Speaker 2: I'm not afraid to be aggressive if I need to
- 27:12Speaker 2: and really ride the bike, and we're clearly seeing that.
- 27:14Speaker 2: So yes, P ten from Sena this weekend and then
- 27:17Speaker 2: into Moto three, we have to start with Joel Kelso
- 27:21Speaker 2: qualified on the front row of the grid in third
- 27:25Speaker 2: and was battling for that lead, was leading the race
- 27:28Speaker 2: for multiple laps. Just what a race from Kelso.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Fantastic race for him, to finish seventh and year half
- 27:36Speaker 3: a second off the win. I mean, that's just Moto
- 27:37Speaker 3: three at Silverstone for you. It's even by Moto three standards.
- 27:40Speaker 3: That was a pretty crazy one. But he was a
- 27:43Speaker 3: lot more aggressive than he has been in that front pack,
- 27:45Speaker 3: and I think, you know, there's there's no prisoners being
- 27:47Speaker 3: taken at that front pack of a Motor three race,
- 27:49Speaker 3: and that's sometimes where he loses out. He's got speed,
- 27:52Speaker 3: and he clearly got the one lap speed, but nice
- 27:54Speaker 3: to see him be a little bit more aggressive. He
- 27:57Speaker 3: said afterwards that he knew exactly what he wanted to
- 27:59Speaker 3: do those last lapse it just didn't quite work out
- 28:01Speaker 3: because he was awesome down into Stowe at the end
- 28:04Speaker 3: of the back straight there. That was his big move.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Didn't quite get it right on the last lap, but
- 28:09Speaker 3: really good result for him to be super competitive. But yeah,
- 28:11Speaker 3: I think it was zo point five four eight and
- 28:13Speaker 3: you finished seventh. Like Moto three, just it never lets
- 28:17Speaker 3: you down, does it. It's almost awesome to you.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Oh, was the best race. I was sitting on the
- 28:21Speaker 1: edge of my seat the whole time, just going g
- 28:23Speaker 1: also's in the lead, now he's back, was gonna what's
- 28:26Speaker 1: happening like you just didn't know, and I was going
- 28:29Speaker 1: one of them is going to crash for sure soon.
- 28:32Speaker 3: I think it's got to the points. Well, when I'm
- 28:34Speaker 3: covering Moto three at this point, I used to take
- 28:36Speaker 3: quite sort of detailed notice to what was happening, and
- 28:38Speaker 3: it comes a point where you just throw your hands
- 28:40Speaker 3: up and say, look, let's just see what happens two
- 28:42Speaker 3: quarters into the final lap, because it could change eleven
- 28:44Speaker 3: times between now and then. It's awesome TV, really good
- 28:48Speaker 3: to see Joel back up there again after a couple
- 28:50Speaker 3: of rope races and you know, let's hope it continues exactly.
- 28:54Speaker 2: And our other Aussie Jacob Rulsoe, not the weekend that
- 28:57Speaker 2: he was wanting. P. Seventy after seems to he was
- 29:03Speaker 2: involved in something and then ended up further back down
- 29:06Speaker 2: the field.
- 29:07Speaker 3: Yeah, the first lap just kind of unraveled. Vhim six
- 29:09Speaker 3: on the grid, so equal best starting spot for him
- 29:12Speaker 3: in his rookie season, but got Bitsla off the line,
- 29:15Speaker 3: beaten up in a term one, had an incident with
- 29:17Speaker 3: David Munyals at the end of the first lap, got
- 29:19Speaker 3: along lap penalty, which is pretty justified. He sent them
- 29:22Speaker 3: both off into the gravel there. So from there it
- 29:24Speaker 3: was just trying to scrounge some points to see if
- 29:26Speaker 3: he could get back, but he was a long way
- 29:27Speaker 3: back from that main pack. So one of those ones
- 29:30Speaker 3: you just chalk it up to experience and flush it
- 29:32Speaker 3: and move on to Austria in two weeks exactly.
- 29:35Speaker 2: So yes, we are moving on to Austria in two
- 29:38Speaker 2: weeks and that for us. So pretty much rounds up
