- 0:01Speaker 1: It's been cool coming to Seattle because I think so
- 0:03Speaker 1: many people are excited for how new this team is
- 0:05Speaker 1: and it feels like there's deep roots of being fans
- 0:09Speaker 1: of this team and the energy in our rink has
- 0:11Speaker 1: been exceptional.
- 0:14Speaker 2: I think this team feeds off that energy. I think
- 0:16Speaker 2: we feel that.
- 0:18Speaker 1: There's been a really nice home crowd that I felt
- 0:21Speaker 1: coming here which has been super special and I feel
- 0:24Speaker 1: like that's been propelling us to.
- 0:26Speaker 2: The start of the season and even late last season.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Where things weren't going as well for us, we were
- 0:30Speaker 1: still feeling support of that crowd that was that was
- 0:33Speaker 1: something that was really special so it's definitely an adjustment
- 0:36Speaker 1: going from such a historic organization where they have so
- 0:39Speaker 1: many systems in place and things have been there for
- 0:41Speaker 1: a long long time we're here we're still trying to
- 0:45Speaker 1: figure things out a little bit and find our find
- 0:49Speaker 1: our rhythm, but we're definitely excited about the culture that's
- 0:54Speaker 1: being built here and the guys that we have around here.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Welcome to Kraken This Morning, a presentation of the Kraken
- 1:00Speaker 3: Audio Network and Sports Radio 93.3 KJR FM. Here's Mike Benton.
- 1:07Speaker 4: The words you just heard came from Bobby McMahon, formerly
- 1:10Speaker 4: of the Toronto Maple Leafs, now with the Kraken on
- 1:13Speaker 4: a brand new six-year deal and facing his former teammates,
- 1:17Speaker 4: for the first time since last year's trade in March.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Should be a fun one tonight. Welcome to Kraken this
- 1:23Speaker 4: morning on a Wednesday, October 28th. The Seattle Kraken take
- 1:26Speaker 4: on the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first of two matchups,
- 1:29Speaker 4: and we have all the action for you coming up
- 1:32Speaker 4: this evening, 7 o'clock Pacific time from Climate Pledge Arena.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Everett Fitzhugh, Al Koniski, of course, on the call. I'll
- 1:39Speaker 4: join you once again back by the Coors Light landing
- 1:41Speaker 4: in Section 2630 Airtime. with post-game coverage up to an
- 1:45Speaker 4: hour after the final horn. From Tom's Wash Bar, hope
- 1:48Speaker 4: that you can certainly join us on 93.3 KJRFM and
- 1:52Speaker 4: the Global Credit Union Kraken Audio Network. We will hear
- 1:56Speaker 4: from McMahon shortly. He was part of a media conference
- 1:59Speaker 4: call on Tuesday. Plus, also we'll hear from Scott Laughlin
- 2:02Speaker 4: of SiriusXM, NHL Network Radio's Morning Skate, crystallizing the whole
- 2:07Speaker 4: experience with McMahon, turnover on the roster, Gavin McKenna's immediate impact.
- 2:13Speaker 4: And what are the odds that Kirill Marchenko, who's out
- 2:16Speaker 4: to a hot start, sits or plays after suffering a
- 2:19Speaker 4: scary lower body injury against Calgary on Monday night? The
- 2:24Speaker 4: meaning of this game for the Kraken simply lies in
- 2:26Speaker 4: the fact they can finish their homestand on a very
- 2:29Speaker 4: strong note and pick up their third win in four
- 2:33Speaker 4: games and start the year 4-2 on home ice. There
- 2:37Speaker 4: will be some change, of course, in their lineup, most notably...
- 2:41Speaker 4: Yanni Newman, recalled from AHL Coachella Valley last Saturday, going
- 2:45Speaker 4: to be pressed into duty because Jarrett McCann will be
- 2:48Speaker 4: missing the next 10 weeks with a lower body injury,
- 2:51Speaker 4: taking one of the most accomplished point producers in Kraken
- 2:54Speaker 4: history out until possibly after New Year's Day. Pretty ideal
- 2:59Speaker 4: time for Newman to jump in. He's off to a
- 3:01Speaker 4: red-hot start with nine goals in nine games at the
- 3:04Speaker 4: American Hockey League level. That leads the entire league. And
- 3:08Speaker 4: if practice lines serve any indication, there will be no
- 3:11Speaker 4: sheltering Newman. Taking reps at five-on-five with Chandler Stevenson as
- 3:16Speaker 4: his center is and Mackie Samuskevich on the opposite wing. That,
- 3:21Speaker 4: in effect, also moves the Kraken bottom six right back
- 3:24Speaker 4: to working order where it was previously before last weekend
- 3:27Speaker 4: with Capococco on the left wing, Berkley Catton in the middle,
- 3:31Speaker 4: and Shane Wright on the right wing. That trio had
- 3:34Speaker 4: turned plenty of heads and had been very productive. surface numbers,
- 3:38Speaker 4: and analytically. Additionally, the bottom six reunites Ben Myers on
- 3:42Speaker 4: the left wing, Freddie Goudreau in the middle, and possibly
- 3:45Speaker 4: Ryan Winterton on the right wing, leaving your only other
- 3:49Speaker 4: change out of the top line with... Andy Beneers at center,
- 3:53Speaker 4: Jordan Eberle on the right wing, and guess who on
- 3:56Speaker 4: the left wing? Bobby McMahon, who takes a spotlight here tonight.
- 4:01Speaker 4: He'll face his former team in the Leaves, previously off
- 4:04Speaker 4: a 5-2 loss to Calgary. They had won four games
- 4:07Speaker 4: in a row, but are going through a massive injury bug,
- 4:10Speaker 4: just like the rest of the entire league. Out right
- 4:13Speaker 4: now include the following. Nick Blankenberg, Chris Tanev, Max Domi,
- 4:17Speaker 4: Miles Wood, Dakota Joshua, Marshall Riffey, goaltender Elvis Merzlikens, John Tavares,
- 4:24Speaker 4: and we'll wait and see on Kirill Marchenko, who's got
- 4:27Speaker 4: 14 points in his first 14 games, but exited Monday
- 4:31Speaker 4: in Calgary with a lower body injury. His timetable... undetermined
- 4:36Speaker 4: as of the end of Tuesday night. Aside from that,
- 4:38Speaker 4: the Kraken had to deal once again with Austin Matthews
- 4:41Speaker 4: off to a 20-point and 14-game start. William Nylander just
- 4:46Speaker 4: one point behind. Easton Cowan, the youngster at 21 years
- 4:49Speaker 4: of age, 13 points in just 14 games. And Prodigy
- 4:54Speaker 4: forward Gavin McKenna picked first overall this last summer and
- 4:57Speaker 4: at just 18 years of age already owns eight points.
- 5:01Speaker 4: in his first 14 games. Special teams could be a
- 5:04Speaker 4: big part of the conversation. Toronto owning by the end
- 5:07Speaker 4: of Tuesday night the fifth best power play in the
- 5:10Speaker 4: entire NHL at 28% and the top ranked penalty kill
- 5:14Speaker 4: squashing 44 of their first 47 chances. So the Kraken
- 5:19Speaker 4: trying to make it three wins in a row over
- 5:21Speaker 4: Toronto in this head-to-head series and doing so now with
- 5:25Speaker 4: two foam reliefs on their side in McMahon, and of course,
- 5:29Speaker 4: head coach Lane Lambert, who was an associate coach two
- 5:32Speaker 4: years ago under Craig Berube. To get ready for McMahon's
- 5:36Speaker 4: first game facing the Leafs, he joined a media conference
- 5:39Speaker 4: call Tuesday offering his thoughts on facing his former team
- 5:42Speaker 4: for the first time since last year's trade deadline.
- 5:45Speaker 5: It'll be good.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I'm excited for it.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Always like playing familiar teams, playing against guys that I've
- 5:54Speaker 1: seen a lot, obviously, in practice and stuff, so I'm
- 5:56Speaker 1: excited for it and should be a good one.
- 5:59Speaker 6: How do you look back on your time with the Leafs?
- 6:01Speaker 6: What stood out the most?
- 6:04Speaker 1: I think just the memories of that city and how
- 6:06Speaker 1: much people care about the team there. I think it's
- 6:10Speaker 1: special every game you get to wear that jersey with
- 6:12Speaker 1: how historic that organization is. I was thankful for that
- 6:16Speaker 1: every time that I was able to do that. And
- 6:18Speaker 1: then you just feel the energy around that city and
- 6:20Speaker 1: how much people care for every single game, for making
- 6:24Speaker 1: it to the playoffs, for every round that you can
- 6:26Speaker 1: win there. every little bit of effort that you put in,
- 6:30Speaker 1: I think is really rewarded and how much people care.
- 6:34Speaker 1: And I think that that's what makes that place, uh,
- 6:36Speaker 1: special to play in.
- 6:37Speaker 7: First things first, like you, a lot of your, your
- 6:40Speaker 7: close friends, um, you know, Matthew, Joseph, Simone, they've also
- 6:45Speaker 7: left the team. Have you kept in touch with those
- 6:48Speaker 7: guys and what do you make of kind of the
- 6:50Speaker 7: massive overhaul in the roster since you left?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I was just thinking about that a little bit today, um,
- 6:55Speaker 1: about how many guys that, um, I would go to
- 6:58Speaker 1: dinner with or hang around with or spend time with
- 7:01Speaker 1: away from the rink that aren't there anymore. It's a,
- 7:03Speaker 1: it's a pretty crazy turnover. Um, definitely keeping in contact
- 7:06Speaker 1: with those guys. Um, and just, it's crazy to see
- 7:11Speaker 1: the difference in that, the team that, that they have
- 7:13Speaker 1: now there. Um, and it's, it's a very different look. It's, um,
- 7:19Speaker 1: a lot of, a lot of moving pieces and I
- 7:21Speaker 1: think there's a lot to be fit in together there, but, um, yeah, definitely,
- 7:26Speaker 1: definitely a lot of turnover and, a different look.
- 7:31Speaker 7: I'm just curious for you personally, Bobby, like the Leafs
- 7:34Speaker 7: were the only NHL organization you knew. They didn't draft you,
- 7:38Speaker 7: they developed you. What's it been like for you personally
- 7:41Speaker 7: to make that adjustment from Toronto to Seattle?
- 7:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's different. A very historic organization to
- 7:50Speaker 1: one of the newest ones here. So it's been interesting.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I've been able to pull some stuff that I learned
- 7:57Speaker 1: in Toronto and take it here. And then they're also
- 8:02Speaker 1: very progressive here on how they want to look at
- 8:05Speaker 1: the newest things, the newest performance things, the newest strategies,
- 8:08Speaker 1: the newest ways of coaching, like all those things combined
- 8:12Speaker 1: to try and push guys to be their best here
- 8:15Speaker 1: and push our team to be the best and as
- 8:17Speaker 1: competitive as possible. So I think it's been great. I'm
- 8:21Speaker 1: really happy I got to see that side of it.
- 8:24Speaker 1: and how that organization has run for so long and
- 8:27Speaker 1: be a part of that and develop in that system
- 8:29Speaker 1: because they do have a really good set up there
- 8:31Speaker 1: and was able to get my game to a really
- 8:33Speaker 1: good spot and then take that to here where they're
- 8:36Speaker 1: really trying to push for a great culture and try
- 8:40Speaker 1: and be really competitive here. And I'm excited to be
- 8:43Speaker 1: a part of that here.
- 8:44Speaker 8: Just wondering, you know, obviously you locked in the six-year
- 8:49Speaker 8: deal in the offseason. What went into that decision to
- 8:53Speaker 8: sort of lock in long-term and what did it mean
- 8:55Speaker 8: to you?
- 8:57Speaker 2: I think that security is huge.
- 8:59Speaker 1: I think I've always dreamed of signing a long-term deal
- 9:02Speaker 1: in the NHL and playing, knowing that I'd be playing
- 9:05Speaker 1: for a while in this league, because this is, this
- 9:08Speaker 1: is the one you dream as dream of as a kid.
- 9:10Speaker 1: So I think that was super special for me. And
- 9:14Speaker 1: I think it was a lot of work to, to
- 9:17Speaker 1: get to that point. And then now it's, it's been
- 9:22Speaker 1: special because I can continue to work and continue to
- 9:25Speaker 1: try and push to be the best player that I
- 9:28Speaker 1: can be and continue to, to work at my game
- 9:31Speaker 1: and try and contribute to this team as, as much
- 9:34Speaker 1: as I possibly can.
- 9:36Speaker 8: Bobby, just to follow up, I saw, you know, the,
- 9:38Speaker 8: the story out of Wainwright, your hometown recently has been
- 9:43Speaker 8: quite tragic. I just wondered how you process that and
- 9:46Speaker 8: whether or not you knew anybody that was directly affected
- 9:49Speaker 8: by that tragedy.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely a tragedy and something that has been hard
- 9:58Speaker 1: for that town.
- 9:59Speaker 2: A lot of the.
- 10:01Speaker 1: Canadian Armed Forces are immersed in that town all the
- 10:04Speaker 1: way through that.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Community, a big part of it.
- 10:07Speaker 1: So it's a sad day for sure, but also a
- 10:13Speaker 1: lot of great people that jumped up and had all
- 10:16Speaker 1: hands on deck and were a big part of getting
- 10:18Speaker 1: a lot of people the help that they needed. And
- 10:21Speaker 1: I think that that was something that should definitely be
- 10:24Speaker 1: noted and the amount of people that pull together in
- 10:26Speaker 1: a small community like that to be a part of
- 10:29Speaker 1: saving people and getting them to places where they needed
- 10:32Speaker 1: to go to get the help that they needed. And
- 10:34Speaker 1: that's kind of that community in a nutshell is like
- 10:37Speaker 1: anybody's willing to jump up and be a part of that.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So definitely a sad day and we'll remember those that
- 10:44Speaker 1: were directly affected by it.
- 10:47Speaker 6: Bobby, you mentioned all the turnover. I'm wondering, though, if
- 10:50Speaker 6: you're still in touch with some of the guys leading
- 10:52Speaker 6: into this game, if you're hoping to catch up with
- 10:53Speaker 6: anyone leading.
- 10:54Speaker 4: Into the game.
- 10:57Speaker 2: No friends right now until the game's over.
- 11:00Speaker 1: No, I'm sure there'll be some contact with some guys
- 11:04Speaker 1: and just seeing what they're up to and seeing how
- 11:06Speaker 1: they're doing.
- 11:07Speaker 6: And I'm just wondering, just spending time around Austin, playing
- 11:10Speaker 6: with him, what was your takeaway from that?
- 11:14Speaker 1: I think you just see how intentional he is with
- 11:16Speaker 1: everything that he does. There's a reason he scores so
- 11:19Speaker 1: many goals and is so dynamic offensively. He's intentional with everything,
- 11:25Speaker 1: with all of his practice reps, with all of his
- 11:26Speaker 1: game reps, with the way that he approaches the game.
- 11:29Speaker 1: He's a true professional. He tries to get everything he
- 11:31Speaker 1: possibly can out of himself, and he expects a ton
- 11:34Speaker 1: out of himself. So you don't get to that spot
- 11:37Speaker 1: without putting in a ton of work and being very
- 11:40Speaker 1: deliberate with the things that you're doing. So I think
- 11:43Speaker 1: I had a ton of respect for him being there
- 11:45Speaker 1: and I still do. And the way that he plays
- 11:47Speaker 1: the game, it's, it's a very, very competitive style of
- 11:50Speaker 1: game that he plays. And there's a lot of things
- 11:52Speaker 1: that he does off the puck as well. That's not
- 11:54Speaker 1: just scoring goals. So a ton of good things that
- 11:57Speaker 1: I've learned from him and that I could say about him.
- 11:59Speaker 7: Bobby, if I could just ask you about two of
- 12:01Speaker 7: your boys who were, you know, moved from the organization,
- 12:05Speaker 7: Matt and I's and Joseph wall. I wondered if you
- 12:08Speaker 7: could just share what you've seen from them since their
- 12:11Speaker 7: moves and, and what, kind of communication you've had with them.
- 12:15Speaker 7: And also again, maybe what we don't see about how
- 12:18Speaker 7: difficult it is to move from the only organization you've
- 12:22Speaker 7: known to a new one.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 12:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Yeah. I think they've been doing well.
- 12:28Speaker 1: I think it's, there's a, there's a huge curve that
- 12:31Speaker 1: comes with being traded and it's, comes down to like
- 12:34Speaker 1: the littlest things of like what where you go now
- 12:37Speaker 1: that you're at the home side of that rink like
- 12:39Speaker 1: how what door do you go and like who do
- 12:40Speaker 1: you talk to to like know where to go like
- 12:42Speaker 1: all those things are pieces that become second nature eventually
- 12:46Speaker 1: once you start to find your footing in a new
- 12:47Speaker 1: place but all those like little things of the traffic
- 12:51Speaker 1: on the way the rink are all decisions that you
- 12:53Speaker 1: have to make trying to figure out and navigate your
- 12:56Speaker 1: life in a new city and I think that like
- 12:58Speaker 1: talking with those guys that's that's kind of the hardest
- 13:00Speaker 1: part of that adjustment is and going to a new
- 13:02Speaker 1: city because you start to compare it to Toronto and
- 13:05Speaker 1: be like, well, this drive was this long or, um,
- 13:09Speaker 1: I could do this in Toronto and I just have
- 13:10Speaker 1: to find a way to, to make that work in
- 13:12Speaker 1: this new city. But then eventually you do and things,
- 13:14Speaker 1: things start to work out.
- 13:15Speaker 2: So, uh, we played Philly this year.
- 13:17Speaker 1: I went to Waller's place, uh, checked out his house
- 13:19Speaker 1: there and, um, and like kind of just talk to
- 13:23Speaker 1: him about.
- 13:23Speaker 2: What it's like being traded. It's just crazy because it
- 13:25Speaker 2: happens so fast. And he's like, nice.
- 13:27Speaker 1: He's little bit harder because it was right before the
- 13:29Speaker 1: season one day before the season so that was that
- 13:32Speaker 1: was harder for him but waller had some time in
- 13:33Speaker 1: the summer to to make the move and get all
- 13:35Speaker 1: his stuff there and find a place and all those
- 13:38Speaker 1: things it's like you're moving if you have kids like
- 13:40Speaker 1: you're moving your family um your girlfriend wife whatever it
- 13:43Speaker 1: is and all those pieces are are difficult and once
- 13:46Speaker 1: you can settle them it's it's a little bit easier
- 13:49Speaker 1: to focus on the hockey side of it um and
- 13:51Speaker 1: that's kind of i think that something like we've talked
- 13:54Speaker 1: about but I think you can find your groove anywhere
- 13:57Speaker 1: that it is, and other teams are offering things that
- 13:59Speaker 1: maybe you didn't have in your previous spot, or you
- 14:01Speaker 1: can make connections that you weren't able to in your
- 14:04Speaker 1: previous spot. So I think there's pieces to it where
- 14:07Speaker 1: you feel like you're going to struggle, but there's also
- 14:09Speaker 1: things that you get excited about as well.
- 14:11Speaker 8: I mean, now that you've spent a significant amount of
- 14:13Speaker 8: time in Seattle playing, I mean, I was just curious
- 14:16Speaker 8: about how would you sort of compare and contrast the
- 14:20Speaker 8: experience of being an NHL player in Toronto versus Seattle?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel, uh, I feel like the, the size
- 14:29Speaker 1: of the city in Toronto and the amount of people
- 14:31Speaker 1: that are hockey fans there is definitely, uh, a bigger
- 14:34Speaker 1: and widespread, uh, wider spread fan base. Um, and you
- 14:38Speaker 1: feel that, but it's been, it's been cool coming to
- 14:40Speaker 1: Seattle because I think so many people are excited for
- 14:43Speaker 1: how new this team is. And it feels like there's
- 14:46Speaker 1: deep roots of, uh, being fans of this team and,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and the energy in our rink has been exceptional.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Um, I think this team feeds off that energy. I
- 14:55Speaker 2: think we feel that.
- 14:57Speaker 1: There's been a really nice home crowd that I felt
- 15:00Speaker 1: coming here, which has been super special. And I feel
- 15:03Speaker 1: like that's been propelling us to the start of the season.
- 15:06Speaker 1: And even late last season where things weren't going as
- 15:08Speaker 1: well for us, we were still feeling the support of
- 15:10Speaker 1: that crowd. That was something that was really special. So
- 15:14Speaker 1: it's definitely an adjustment going from such a historic organization
- 15:17Speaker 1: where they have so many systems in place and things
- 15:20Speaker 1: have been there for a long, long time. We're here,
- 15:22Speaker 1: we're still trying to Um, figure things out a little
- 15:25Speaker 1: bit and, um, find our. find our rhythm, but we're
- 15:31Speaker 1: definitely excited about the culture that's being built here and
- 15:34Speaker 1: the guys that we have around here.
- 15:36Speaker 4: With that conversation in the books, a lot of attention
- 15:38Speaker 4: here in different areas for the Kraken and the Leafs,
- 15:41Speaker 4: and the first time they will square up here for
- 15:43Speaker 4: this regular season. Great friend of ours for Kraken this
- 15:47Speaker 4: morning joining us right now, he is Scott Laughlin. He's
- 15:50Speaker 4: a big piece of the core for SiriusXM NHL Network Radio.
- 15:54Speaker 4: and host of Morning Skate. Scott joins us right now
- 15:58Speaker 4: on Kraken this morning. Scott, how are you? And I
- 16:00Speaker 4: first have to ask, allegedly two-thirds of the NHL hometown
- 16:05Speaker 4: remix jerseys have been leaked here to the public. We
- 16:08Speaker 4: know it's not official, of course, until official, but the Leafs,
- 16:12Speaker 4: by all that it appears, cream-colored base and a logo
- 16:15Speaker 4: that literally takes us back a hundred years. So if
- 16:19Speaker 4: this is happening, what's your reaction?
- 16:22Speaker 5: Well, look, I think, Mike, any time that an original
- 16:25Speaker 5: six team decides to get in on this action, and look,
- 16:29Speaker 5: we've seen all kinds of third jerseys come about over
- 16:31Speaker 5: the years, and the Leafs have had a salute to
- 16:33Speaker 5: the Toronto St. Pats and teams like that in decades
- 16:37Speaker 5: gone by and years gone by. It always obviously meets
- 16:41Speaker 5: with a little bit of skepticism just because a lot
- 16:44Speaker 5: of people believe original six, they shouldn't be touched in
- 16:46Speaker 5: any way, shape, or form. You should have two sweaters,
- 16:49Speaker 5: and that's exactly what the players should wear, so it's
- 16:52Speaker 5: We'll wait and see. If and when it becomes official,
- 16:54Speaker 5: it'll become a big talking point. And again, I guess
- 16:56Speaker 5: we've got to get here into the 2026-2027 sort of mindset.
- 17:00Speaker 5: And from that standpoint, obviously, it's going to mean a
- 17:02Speaker 5: lot in terms of financial revenue that the Leafs and
- 17:04Speaker 5: the league can pull in. And from that extent, it'll
- 17:08Speaker 5: obviously be a good thing for the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise.
- 17:10Speaker 4: Yeah, certainly as a business game, without a question, and
- 17:13Speaker 4: bottom line. And it's kind of funny how you kind
- 17:17Speaker 4: of put it into a box. It's kind of like
- 17:18Speaker 4: how Major League teams are. You don't mess much here
- 17:21Speaker 4: with the Dodgers jerseys, the Yankees jerseys, the Cubs jerseys. Leafs, Montreal, Detroit,
- 17:28Speaker 4: et cetera, in that same boat. But the reaction is
- 17:30Speaker 4: going to be very, very. Interesting. Bobby McMahon is going
- 17:36Speaker 4: to be front and center of this matchup, of course.
- 17:38Speaker 4: And we have waited here on this for a while.
- 17:41Speaker 4: And while the hockey world is a small world, the
- 17:43Speaker 4: degree that guys set competitive boundaries, it varies from player
- 17:47Speaker 4: to player, Scott, as you know. I mean, McMahon's old school.
- 17:51Speaker 4: And we're asked in a media conference call today if
- 17:53Speaker 4: he's going to be in touch with some old teammates
- 17:56Speaker 4: up until game time. He put that to bed with, quote-unquote,
- 18:00Speaker 4: no friends, end quote, and with a smile. He led
- 18:04Speaker 4: the stretch circle after practice Tuesday. So this is going
- 18:08Speaker 4: to be fun. How do you define Bobby McMahon's time
- 18:11Speaker 4: in Toronto and the measure of this trade that went
- 18:13Speaker 4: down last season?
- 18:15Speaker 5: Well, I think, Mike, when you look at Bobby McMahon,
- 18:17Speaker 5: a very versatile player. I think his Kraken fans have
- 18:20Speaker 5: found out here the last little bit. Very versatile guy.
- 18:23Speaker 5: A guy that will play on the first line. He
- 18:24Speaker 5: can play on the second line. He can play on
- 18:26Speaker 5: the third line if He can play with a lot
- 18:28Speaker 5: of different players, and you can't really say that about
- 18:31Speaker 5: every player out there. You do have to have a
- 18:33Speaker 5: particular skill set. You do have to have the ability
- 18:35Speaker 5: to win one-on-one battles and to play well with good players.
- 18:38Speaker 5: I think we're seeing that now in Seattle with Bobby,
- 18:40Speaker 5: who's really, I think, taken to the crack and what
- 18:43Speaker 5: they've had to offer very nicely here as we've seen
- 18:46Speaker 5: over the past season plus or so. So I think
- 18:49Speaker 5: it's worked out well for him. He was kind of
- 18:51Speaker 5: caught in a numbers game, I think, with the Toronto
- 18:52Speaker 5: Maple Leafs, I think, Mike, when you break it all down.
- 18:55Speaker 5: They were kind of spoken for in the top six
- 18:57Speaker 5: and obviously we've got an injury right now to John Tavares,
- 19:00Speaker 5: the least they're dealing with, and now with Kirill Marchenko
- 19:02Speaker 5: being banged up to a certain extent as well, they've
- 19:04Speaker 5: also got that to deal with. But I just think,
- 19:07Speaker 5: you know, it was time for a change for him.
- 19:09Speaker 5: He's making some good money on a good contract out
- 19:11Speaker 5: there with the Kraken, and I think that he's with Seattle,
- 19:14Speaker 5: basically the player that he was with Toronto. And that's
- 19:16Speaker 5: a very versatile option that's going to produce for you.
- 19:19Speaker 5: He's going to score some big goals for you and
- 19:21Speaker 5: win those one-on-one battles. So I think he's a real
- 19:23Speaker 5: key figure for the Seattle Kraken now and going forward.
- 19:25Speaker 4: Yeah, now with Jared McCann out for 10 weeks, here
- 19:28Speaker 4: he is all of a sudden, top line left wing
- 19:30Speaker 4: with Matty Beneers and Jordan Eberle.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Here we go.
- 19:33Speaker 4: You mentioned Marchenko. I do want to get to him.
- 19:35Speaker 4: There has been a ton of turnover, of course, from
- 19:37Speaker 4: top to bottom. He's in because out the door goes
- 19:41Speaker 4: Matthew Nyes, of course, in that trade. So, I mean,
- 19:44Speaker 4: first off, Marchenko, as you mentioned, banged up last game,
- 19:47Speaker 4: lower body, it seems, and folks are just kind of hanging.
- 19:50Speaker 4: on right now with beta breath on his status. But overall,
- 19:53Speaker 4: 14 points in 14 games. Scott, I would say things
- 19:56Speaker 4: are working out right now for him so far in Toronto.
- 19:59Speaker 4: Is there any player maybe, though, from the past on
- 20:02Speaker 4: the Leafs that he kind of reminds you of?
- 20:04Speaker 5: Oh, that's a great question. That's a great question, Mike.
- 20:07Speaker 5: He's a big, strong guy that can skate and has
- 20:10Speaker 5: got skills. So anybody who fits those characteristics, I think,
- 20:14Speaker 5: from years gone by would be a Marchenko type. They
- 20:17Speaker 5: went out and made this deal, and I think a
- 20:19Speaker 5: lot of people raised their eyebrows. And they kept on
- 20:21Speaker 5: asking themselves, why would Matthew Nye even be available in
- 20:25Speaker 5: a trade? The last couple of years, there's been a
- 20:27Speaker 5: whole lot of trade speculation around Matthew Nye. And the
- 20:31Speaker 5: way I always looked at it, Mike, was this. When
- 20:33Speaker 5: you look at Toronto, the cupboards have been basically emptied
- 20:36Speaker 5: out the past couple of seasons. They haven't had a
- 20:38Speaker 5: lot to work with in terms of draft capital, in
- 20:40Speaker 5: terms of prospects. They're not exactly brimming with all kinds
- 20:44Speaker 5: of prospects, although we can get to, obviously, Easton Cowan
- 20:47Speaker 5: and what kind of difference he's making for the Toronto
- 20:50Speaker 5: Maple Leafs this particular season. And obviously, Gavin McKenna is
- 20:53Speaker 5: going to be a bit of a work in progress
- 20:55Speaker 5: here as the first overall pick from a couple of
- 20:56Speaker 5: months ago at the draft in Buffalo. But that being said,
- 20:59Speaker 5: I think they dangled Matthew Nyes out there because they
- 21:01Speaker 5: wanted to improve They think that Marchenko is a guy
- 21:05Speaker 5: that's been a 30-goal scorer that can get to 40
- 21:07Speaker 5: and who knows what after that. The fact that he's
- 21:10Speaker 5: banged up right now certainly is a little bit of
- 21:12Speaker 5: a monkey wrench going into the game against the Kraken
- 21:14Speaker 5: and beyond, perhaps. But I think he's that type of
- 21:16Speaker 5: guy that they said, hey, Matthew Nyes is an emerging
- 21:19Speaker 5: power forward who's going to be a top-six guy probably
- 21:22Speaker 5: the rest of his career and is going to get
- 21:23Speaker 5: a golden opportunity over the long haul in Columbus to
- 21:26Speaker 5: show his wares. But I think at the end of
- 21:28Speaker 5: the day, they just like the prolific, dynamic-type talent that
- 21:31Speaker 5: Marchenko is. Can he be enigmatic?
- 21:34Speaker 3: Yes.
- 21:35Speaker 5: Was he one of those guys who was out of
- 21:36Speaker 5: shape that Rick Bonas was alluding to once they got
- 21:40Speaker 5: going in training camp and through the preseason and such? Perhaps.
- 21:43Speaker 5: He could be seen in Columbus as being a little
- 21:45Speaker 5: bit moody and maybe not fully committed all the time.
- 21:48Speaker 5: But when he is committed, we know those types of
- 21:50Speaker 5: players are very, very dangerous, as he's proven on a
- 21:52Speaker 5: couple of different occasions so far this season. So get
- 21:55Speaker 5: well soon. They hope to see him back. I don't
- 21:57Speaker 5: think it'll be for the game against the Kraken, however.
- 21:59Speaker 4: He can certainly shoot the puck no matter how you
- 22:02Speaker 4: slice it. Scott Laughlin joining us once again here. from
- 22:05Speaker 4: SiriusXM NHL Network Radio as a part of Kraken this
- 22:08Speaker 4: morning here for the Kraken and the Leafs. And Scott,
- 22:10Speaker 4: you mentioned Easton Cowan getting top-line ice time recently with
- 22:14Speaker 4: Austin Matthews. 13 points so far in 14 games. He
- 22:18Speaker 4: is well on his way to obliterating his rookie totals
- 22:22Speaker 4: from last season. What have you seen as far as
- 22:25Speaker 4: the steps that he's taken here in his second year?
- 22:27Speaker 5: Well, he's a guy with a whole lot of compete.
- 22:29Speaker 5: He's not the biggest guy, as you'll see, obviously, and
- 22:31Speaker 5: have seen Mike, of course. He's not the biggest guy
- 22:33Speaker 5: on the ice, but he's got a real, real big heart.
- 22:36Speaker 5: He does compete. He doesn't back down. The game against Calgary,
- 22:40Speaker 5: I think it was Zane Perak that he was kind
- 22:42Speaker 5: of pushing around and shoving, and maybe they were going
- 22:44Speaker 5: to get into something. And all of a sudden, Zane
- 22:46Speaker 5: Perak peeled off, and there was big Martin Pospisil there.
- 22:50Speaker 5: who's about six inches taller than Cowan is, and he
- 22:53Speaker 5: wasn't backing down. Now, granted, in the Calgary game that
- 22:56Speaker 5: they lost, he took a couple of undisciplined penalties, got benched,
- 22:59Speaker 5: and then came back, was probably going to be better
- 23:01Speaker 5: for it in the long run. But he's the type
- 23:04Speaker 5: of guy that going back to his junior days with
- 23:05Speaker 5: the London Knights, he had a 56-game point streak in
- 23:09Speaker 5: the Ontario Hockey League at one point. So that tells
- 23:11Speaker 5: you that the kid's got all kinds of skill, and
- 23:14Speaker 5: when you combine the skill with the compete and the
- 23:16Speaker 5: heart that he shows out there on the ice... And
- 23:18Speaker 5: everybody talked about McKenna coming in here for obvious reasons,
- 23:21Speaker 5: but Cowan's kind of surpassed him. Whereas Cowan started on
- 23:24Speaker 5: the third line and McKenna started on the second, they've
- 23:26Speaker 5: kind of flip-flopped at times during the course of this
- 23:28Speaker 5: young season for Jim Hiller. So I think that Cowan
- 23:32Speaker 5: has certainly earned his responsibility and the increased time on ice.
- 23:35Speaker 5: He's made the most of it, and this guy looks
- 23:37Speaker 5: like he's going to be a player for quite some
- 23:39Speaker 5: time to come with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He's been
- 23:40Speaker 5: a godsend, especially given lately the injury, of course, to
- 23:44Speaker 5: John Tavares.
- 23:45Speaker 4: Gavin McKenna, 18 years of age, first overall pick last summer,
- 23:50Speaker 4: and he's got eight points in 14 games. How do
- 23:53Speaker 4: you define healthy expectations for him this year?
- 23:56Speaker 5: Well, I said before the season, I think that realistically,
- 23:59Speaker 5: if you could get 60 points out of him, I
- 24:01Speaker 5: think that that would be what you'd be aiming for.
- 24:03Speaker 5: I looked at something like Conor Bedard in Chicago. Now, granted,
- 24:06Speaker 5: you look at a kid like McKenna, and he's got
- 24:08Speaker 5: more to work with in Toronto than Bedard did when
- 24:11Speaker 5: he certainly started as a rookie with the Chicago Blackhawks
- 24:14Speaker 5: a couple of years ago. So, I think 20 goals
- 24:16Speaker 5: and 40 assists is what I said. He's more of
- 24:18Speaker 5: a playmaker than he is a goal scorer. We saw
- 24:20Speaker 5: that in the Western Hockey League, and then we saw
- 24:22Speaker 5: it at Penn State going back to last season as well.
- 24:25Speaker 5: He's that type of guy. I think he can be
- 24:27Speaker 5: a 20-40 guy. I think you'll see his ice time
- 24:29Speaker 5: go up as the season progresses here. Right now, Jim
- 24:32Speaker 5: Hiller wants to win games. He wants to get off
- 24:34Speaker 5: on the right foot with this new-look team. He returns
- 24:37Speaker 5: to Toronto this time as the head coach of the Leafs.
- 24:40Speaker 5: I think he's right now investing in the veterans who
- 24:43Speaker 5: he can trust. And those are the types of guys
- 24:46Speaker 5: that Jim Hiller feels comfortable putting out there, protecting a
- 24:49Speaker 5: one goal lead that he's really put the trust in
- 24:51Speaker 5: right now. About a week and a half ago, there
- 24:53Speaker 5: was a bit of an uproar around Toronto and the
- 24:55Speaker 5: fact that the rookie saw six minutes and 36 seconds, Mike,
- 24:58Speaker 5: of ice time. That's it, 636. And when you're in
- 25:02Speaker 5: the top pick of the draft in Buffalo a few
- 25:05Speaker 5: months ago, and there's so much of a spotlight on you,
- 25:08Speaker 5: the fact that you get lost by your head coach,
- 25:10Speaker 5: and that's what Hiller explained it as afterwards. He said, look,
- 25:13Speaker 5: I lost him. I lost his line. He didn't get
- 25:16Speaker 5: as much ice time. It's not on him. It's on me.
- 25:18Speaker 5: I think in some way, shape, or form, though. This
- 25:21Speaker 5: was just Jim Hiller trusting his veterans. He wanted to
- 25:25Speaker 5: play his veterans in a clutch situation, in a clutch period.
- 25:28Speaker 5: And you know how it works, Mike. I mean, you
- 25:29Speaker 5: get a couple of power plays against you, and you've
- 25:31Speaker 5: got your PK units out there. He is not a
- 25:34Speaker 5: part of that right now, so he gets lost in
- 25:36Speaker 5: the shuffle to a certain extent. But to make a
- 25:38Speaker 5: long story short with Gavin McKenna, I think you'll look
- 25:40Speaker 5: to see him get better as the season progresses. I
- 25:42Speaker 5: don't think there's going to be any type of a
- 25:44Speaker 5: rookie wall for this guy. Even though he is very
- 25:46Speaker 5: slender and slight and one of the smallest players in
- 25:48Speaker 5: the National Hockey League, I think he's probably going to
- 25:50Speaker 5: use his time away from the rink wisely like he
- 25:52Speaker 5: did at Penn State. And I think the reality is
- 25:55Speaker 5: that he'll get increased responsibility the more he gains the
- 25:58Speaker 5: head coach's trust.
- 25:58Speaker 4: I was just about to ask you, do you feel
- 26:01Speaker 4: differently now versus back then as far as level of
- 26:04Speaker 4: surprise when McKenna was benched?
- 26:07Speaker 5: Yeah, I think in retrospect, you know, it just is
- 26:10Speaker 5: going to take time. And look, we've seen it with
- 26:13Speaker 5: number one picks overall, right? For the most part, you
- 26:15Speaker 5: get selected first overall. For the most part, you're going
- 26:18Speaker 5: to step right into the NHL. We know Owen Power
- 26:20Speaker 5: went to Buffalo and went back to the University of Michigan,
- 26:23Speaker 5: had some boxes he had to check off and so
- 26:24Speaker 5: on and so forth. But nine times out of ten,
- 26:27Speaker 5: if you're the first overall pick, you get thrust into
- 26:29Speaker 5: the NHL. There's a lot of responsibility on your plate.
- 26:31Speaker 5: And usually it comes, Mike, as you know, with a
- 26:34Speaker 5: team that's right down to the bottom of the standings.
- 26:36Speaker 5: In the fact that the Leafs lucked out and won
- 26:38Speaker 5: the draft lottery and won the right to select McKenna
- 26:41Speaker 5: in the first place, he doesn't have to be the
- 26:43Speaker 5: guy who drives it with the Leafs. He has got
- 26:45Speaker 5: Austin Matthews to do that and William Nylander and John
- 26:48Speaker 5: Tavares when he's healthy. Guys like that to do it.
- 26:50Speaker 5: We talked about Easton Cowan and his ascension so far
- 26:53Speaker 5: this season, too. Marchenko's now a part of it. When healthy,
- 26:55Speaker 5: he's going to be a factor as well. So I
- 26:57Speaker 5: think it's the best possible situation for McKenna, but there's
- 27:00Speaker 5: a lot expected of the number one overall pick. Actually,
- 27:03Speaker 5: take it back to Joe Thornton. When Joe Thornton was
- 27:05Speaker 5: in his rookie season with the eventual Hall of Fame coach,
- 27:08Speaker 5: the late, great Pat Burns, Joe Thornton with the Boston
- 27:11Speaker 5: Bruins spent about half the season up in the press box,
- 27:14Speaker 5: watching from above, trying to learn the game. So there's
- 27:17Speaker 5: a little bit of old-school learning going on here with
- 27:19Speaker 5: Gavin McKenna, and I think that relationship, like I said earlier,
- 27:22Speaker 5: with the head coach is a continuously evolving type fluid situation.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Do I ever remember that? 7.55 games as an 18-year-old
- 27:31Speaker 4: with the Bruins, 41-60, 71-68. By the time we get
- 27:36Speaker 4: into the 2Ks, we're thinking, is this guy a bust? Well,
- 27:39Speaker 4: then lo and behold, 0-2, 0-3, boom, 101-point season. Then
- 27:44Speaker 4: it gets dealt to San Jose, and then the rest
- 27:46Speaker 4: is absolutely history. Some guys just take a bit longer.
- 27:50Speaker 4: than others that's tried and true Scott finally aside from
- 27:54Speaker 4: a mention or two in this chat I can't believe
- 27:56Speaker 4: we haven't even touched on Austin Matthews yet but just
- 27:59Speaker 4: getting into this right now just on this kind of
- 28:00Speaker 4: context he wasn't too happy with a delay of game
- 28:03Speaker 4: penalty with closing his hand of the puck on a
- 28:06Speaker 4: face-off in that 5-2 loss at Calgary that snapped a
- 28:09Speaker 4: four-game losing streak so he comes in here still despite
- 28:14Speaker 4: Tavares out maybe Marchenko as well on the shelf But
- 28:17Speaker 4: what kind of a game are we expecting now as
- 28:20Speaker 4: the Leafs roll in with a new head coach in
- 28:22Speaker 4: Jim Hiller?
- 28:23Speaker 5: Well, I think it starts with Austin Matthews, right? And
- 28:25Speaker 5: I think a lot of people said, hey, with all
- 28:27Speaker 5: the changes that took place, and there were 10 new
- 28:30Speaker 5: players in the lineup on opening night by 10 as
- 28:33Speaker 5: compared to last season. So they've had a complete changeover,
- 28:36Speaker 5: new head coach, new front office, of course, with John
- 28:38Speaker 5: Chaka coming in, with Matt Sundin returning to the organization
- 28:42Speaker 5: as well. It's been a total turnover, and to that extent,
- 28:46Speaker 5: you have to say, okay, it's going to take time.
- 28:48Speaker 5: And even with the new faces coming in, everybody said
- 28:50Speaker 5: at the end of the day, the buck is going
- 28:52Speaker 5: to stop with the captain, AM34, Austin Matthews. Maybe he
- 28:56Speaker 5: doesn't need to score 69 goals in a season, Mike,
- 28:59Speaker 5: any longer, but getting to 50 would be nice. I mean,
- 29:01Speaker 5: it's almost imperative that he gets to be that type
- 29:04Speaker 5: of player that gets back to competing at the very
- 29:06Speaker 5: least for the Rocket Richard Trophy and to go from there.
- 29:09Speaker 5: We don't know whether or not the last couple of seasons,
- 29:11Speaker 5: quite frankly, he's been 100% healthy. A couple of seasons ago,
- 29:15Speaker 5: in the middle of the night, it was him going
- 29:17Speaker 5: off to Germany, somewhat mysteriously, to get an injury looked at,
- 29:20Speaker 5: to get a second opinion on something. He came back,
- 29:23Speaker 5: he played through it, whatever it was, but he looked
- 29:26Speaker 5: to be a little bit worse for wear. And we never,
- 29:29Speaker 5: ever have gotten down to the bottom of what that
- 29:31Speaker 5: injury was for Austin Matthews. Most suspect it was an
- 29:34Speaker 5: oblique injury he was dealing with a couple of seasons ago.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Maybe he's finally getting healthy this time around. We know
- 29:40Speaker 5: one thing, too. There's been a smile on his face
- 29:42Speaker 5: this season that wasn't there last season. In whatever way
- 29:46Speaker 5: you want to read into that, you can. Was it
- 29:48Speaker 5: something with Craig Berube last season that didn't mesh with
- 29:51Speaker 5: the captain of the Leafs? Is it the fact that
- 29:54Speaker 5: Jim Hiller maybe has entrusted him a little bit more?
- 29:56Speaker 5: Maybe they've got a better working relationship? I don't really
- 29:59Speaker 5: know what it is, but it looks like he's happy.
- 30:02Speaker 5: The club's a couple games over 500 going into the
- 30:04Speaker 5: game against the Kraken. and we'll see what they can
- 30:07Speaker 5: deliver from there. But there's no doubt that one of
- 30:09Speaker 5: the great signs for the Leafs so far is they
- 30:11Speaker 5: try to sort things out defensively, get their goaltending right
- 30:14Speaker 5: with Bobrovsky, who's been nothing better than average so far
- 30:17Speaker 5: coming in. Anthony Stolarz has been a little bit up
- 30:19Speaker 5: and a little bit down between the pipes. Defensively, like
- 30:22Speaker 5: I said, they're always a bit of a work in progress.
- 30:24Speaker 5: If there's anything to take from what we've seen in
- 30:25Speaker 5: the first eight-plus of the season so far, it's the
- 30:28Speaker 5: fact that Austin Matthews looks like he's happy, content, and productive,
- 30:32Speaker 5: and that might be the best news of all for
- 30:34Speaker 5: Leafs Nation.
- 30:35Speaker 4: All right, Scott, appreciate you, my man. Keep up the
- 30:37Speaker 4: great work. Of course, you are appointment listening in the morning,
- 30:41Speaker 4: but we'll catch you down the road. Thank you again
- 30:43Speaker 4: for hanging out.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Anytime, Mike.
- 30:44Speaker 4: All right, Scott, appreciate you. That's Scott Laughlin joining us
