- 0:07On Tuesday, October 16, 1962, the New York Yankees faced the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park for the seventh and deciding game of the 1962 World Series.
- 0:17The starting pitching matchup would be the same as the game 2, the Yankees Ralph Terry vs. the Giants Jack Sanford.
- 0:23This audio recording is from the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcers George Kell and Joe Garagiola.
- 0:29This is Joe Garagiola along with George Kell welcoming you to the seventh game of the 1962 World Series.
- 0:37This is it. Forget the rest of the season, forget the playoffs, the averages, what you did in this ballpark, that ballpark.
- 0:45It's all wrapped up today and it'll be Ralph Terry for the Yankees and Jack Sanford for the San Francisco Giants.
- 0:54The sky is high here, there's not a cloud in the sky and it's blowing from left field to right field and they will be shading towards the right field line.
- 1:05Now this broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the Commissioner of Baseball solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 1:13In any publication, rebroadcast or other use of the descriptions and accounts of this game without the express consent of the Commissioner is prohibited.
- 1:21The grass has been cut in the outfield. Yesterday it was not cut in the outfield, it was still a bit damp.
- 1:29The ground crew couldn't get out there but they were able to work on it and this ground crew, you certainly have to tip your hats to them.
- 1:35They have really been putting in the extra hours, extra work, and extra detail to get this field in the great shape that it is.
- 1:43The outfield grass is cut and that was another thing that the outfielders were concerned about.
- 1:47Just how would that ball react once it's scooted off that grass?
- 1:51It's a little bit faster than it was yesterday but not that much is the way the ball players were saying it.
- 1:56The thing that is bothering the outfielders more than anything is the wind.
- 2:01The lineups for this big seventh game of the World Series.
- 2:05For the Yankees it's the same lineup that Ralph Hauk has been using throughout the series.
- 2:09Kubek leads off at shortstop. Batting second it's the second baseman Bobby Richardson.
- 2:14Batting third it's the left fielder Tom Tresh. Tresh in left field.
- 2:18Batting fourth it's the center fielder Mickey Mantle. Mantle in center field.
- 2:23Batting fifth the right fielder Roger Maris. Maris in right field.
- 2:27Batting sixth the catcher Elston Howard. Howard the catcher.
- 2:31Batting seventh it's Moose Scowron the first baseman. Scowron at first base.
- 2:35Batting eighth it's the third baseman Cletus Boyer. Boyer at third base.
- 2:40And batting ninth it's the pitcher Ralph Terry.
- 2:43For the San Francisco Giants leading off it's Felipe Elu. A-L-O-U. Felipe Elu in right field.
- 2:50Batting second the second baseman Chuck Hiller. Hiller the second baseman.
- 2:54Batting third the center fielder Willie Mays. Mays in center field.
- 2:58Batting fourth the left fielder McCubby. Willie McCubby in left field.
- 3:02Batting fifth the first baseman Orlando Cepeda. Cepeda at first base.
- 3:06Batting sixth it's the catcher Haller. Tom Haller the catcher.
- 3:10Batting seventh the third baseman Jim Davenport. Davenport at third base.
- 3:15Batting eighth it's the shortstop Jose Pagan. Pagan the shortstop.
- 3:19And batting ninth it's the pitcher Jack Sanford. Sanford against Ralph Terry.
- 3:27Both ball clubs certainly keyed up for this ball game.
- 3:31That has to be the understatement of the year. How do you get up?
- 3:34How do you get up anymore for a ball game than these ball clubs have for this one?
- 3:40The Giants they've been counted out 900 times during the regular season.
- 3:44They kept coming back, coming back. This whole series has been one of really alternating victories.
- 3:49That's the way it's been. The Yankees won the first game by the score of 6-2.
- 3:55Giants came back to win the second one 2-0. Yankees won the third game 3-2.
- 4:00The Giants won the fourth game 7-3. Yankees won the fifth game 5-3.
- 4:06And yesterday the Giants won it behind Billy Pierce 5-2.
- 4:11And today this is it. One whole year wrapped up in one ball game.
- 4:17The umpires just making their way out coming down that first base line.
- 4:21Manager Ralph Hough of the New York Yankees comes out of the dugout from the third base side
- 4:27ready to hand in the lineup card. And Whitey Lachman, a coach for manager Alvin Dark,
- 4:33hands in the giant lineup to Big Stan Landis who will be the playdumpire.
- 4:37So the stage is set. Sanford against Terry.
- 4:43Jack Sanford on the mound, does a little of the work that the groundskeeper has been doing for a couple days.
- 4:48He digs a favorite spot on the pitching slab.
- 4:52The batters like to do it. Hitters like to do it in the batter's box to find that comfortable spot.
- 4:57And George Kell, I can't imagine that until you get that first round ball or get hit by that first foul tip,
- 5:03it's going to be a little tough to get comfortable for a game like this because those butterflies certainly have to be flying around.
- 5:09There's no doubt about it, Joe. I was down on the field before the ball game as you were.
- 5:13And the ball players seem to be a relaxed group of athletes, but they cannot be that relaxed here today.
- 5:19In this all-important seventh ball game, as you said a moment ago, the entire season is wrapped up into one ball game here today.
- 5:26A lot of these fellows have been through it before, some of them going through it for the first time,
- 5:31but the tension has got to be the same for everybody. This is it and they all feel it.
- 5:35And I think this feeling even prevails through this tremendous crowd here today as the Giants taking the field just a moment ago.
- 5:43They let out a tremendous roar, of course, for the hometown team, but they feel the tension right here in the stands.
- 5:48Tony Kuback stepping in to lead off for the Yankees here in the first inning.
- 5:53Sanford gets ready and here's the first pitch of the ball game. He tries to bunt, but he misses.
- 5:58One strike to Kuback. Tony has a 2.80 batting average. He's been to the plate 25 times and he has seven hits.
- 6:06Tony has no home runs. He's batted in one run.
- 6:10This will be the third meeting in this series between Sanford and Terry.
- 6:15They've won one game each. Sanford won here in Candlestick and Ralph back in New York.
- 6:21A pitch to Kuback. Outside a fastball off the corner. One ball, one strike.
- 6:28In the first two ball games that Sanford pitched, he was behind the batters a lot, but he didn't walk many,
- 6:34coming in with a 2-0 pitch, most of the time with good pitches.
- 6:38Here's the pitch. Outside another fastball to miss the corner. Ball two and strike one.
- 6:44It'll be Kuback, Richardson, and Tommy Trash for the Yankees here in the first inning.
- 6:50The seventh game of the 1962 World Series. Sanford ready. A 2-1 pitch.
- 6:57Here's a fly ball hit to center field. Willie May is moving in. He's there and he makes the catch.
- 7:03Tony Kuback out on the fly to center. That'll bring up the second baseman, Bobby Richardson.
- 7:11Bobby's a right-handed batter. He has a 160 batting average. Four hits and 25 trips in this series.
- 7:18He has no home runs, no runs batted in.
- 7:23Giants play him straight away and not too deep. Everybody's going to play shallow in left field today.
- 7:30Here's the pitch to Bobby. Ball. It's inside a curve ball. Missed the corner. One ball and a strike.
- 7:37Willie McCovey is in left field for the Giants. May's in center and Filippo Lou playing in right field today.
- 7:46Sanford into the windup. Here's the one-and-oh pitch. Curve down low.
- 7:51Got this one over the plate but too low. Ball two and no strikes. Sanford didn't like the call on it too much.
- 7:58Stopped and looked in to Stan Lambers. Just on the first two hitters, George, and we might be able to get a pattern.
- 8:03Nothing but fastballs and cue back. Nothing but curves of Richardson. Here's the pitch. It's down low.
- 8:08A fastball low and in. Three and oh to Bobby.
- 8:13Tommy Tresch, the left fielder, is waiting in the on-deck circle. Yankees batting in the first inning with one out and no one on.
- 8:22A ball three and a no-strike count. Sanford taking a little time. Gets ready. Here's the pitch.
- 8:29Down low, we walk in. Bobby Richardson draws a walk. We'll put a runner at first base with one out.
- 8:35And the batter will be Tom Tresch, the left fielder. Tommy's batting average posted at 333 for this series.
- 8:43Eight hits and 24 trips. Tommy has one home run and four runs batted in.
- 8:49A home run, a three-run homer coming against Sanford at Yankee Stadium.
- 8:55Tresch is a switch batter. He's batting left-handed against Sanford.
- 9:01Here's the pitch. Strike. He got a fastball over the outside corner.
- 9:08Davenport is playing in close at third. Jimmy's about even with the bag.
- 9:12Sepeda holds against the runner at first. And both Bagan and Hiller have moved in a couple of steps.
- 9:18They are cheating on the double play.
- 9:23Here's the one-strike pitch. Outside, this one just off the corner.
- 9:28Sanford is aiming everything for the outside part of the play to these left-handed batters.
- 9:33One ball and one strike.
- 9:36He's got a couple spots that will help him out if he can get them to hit that ball into left field because left center field is going to be a real tough job to hit one out of here the way that wind is blowing.
- 9:46Sanford checks his runner.
- 9:48Here's the one-one pitch. He swings and hits a pop fly behind third. Davenport is chasing it.
- 9:53He's over near the stands and he makes the catch.
- 9:57Jimmy Davenport making a fine play as he stayed with that high pop fly, caught it and crashed into the barrier.
- 10:07There's two down and the batter will be Mickey Mantle.
- 10:10George, you remember in that ball game over here, the second one, Tom Haller made some fine catches with some foul balls that stay in play. Anything that's hit toward the third base line, you better chase it because it'll blow back in play.
- 10:23Mantle with an 0-91 batting average. He's been to the play 22 times. He has two hits.
- 10:28Mickey has no home runs in this series. No runs batted in.
- 10:32He's batting left-handed against Sanford.
- 10:35Here's a quick throw to first. Richardson back in town.
- 10:40Bobby at first base with two outs here in the first inning. There's no score.
- 10:46Sanford gets set.
- 10:50The pitch to Mantle. Ball. It's down low. One ball and no strikes.
- 10:58Some of the riders were kidding Halk on the bench before the ball game about using the same lineup every day.
- 11:04I said one thing I found out early in my managing career is go with the best you have every day.
- 11:09Don't shuffle the lineup around. Just put the best you've got in there and play them.
- 11:16One ball, no strikes. The pitch to Mickey. Strike. He got a fastball over. Right down the middle of that one.
- 11:25The Giants are deep and around to the right for Mantle.
- 11:33A bright, sunshiny afternoon. A strong breeze blowing in from left field.
- 11:39As we said before, the wind normally quiet here until about 3 o'clock, but today it started moving in about 10 o'clock this morning.
- 11:47Here's the pitch to Mickey. He swings and hits a high fly ball to left field.
- 11:51Willie McCovey is waiting on it. Still waiting. He's got it.
- 11:57Mickey Mantle out of the high fly to left field. No runs, no hits, no errors. One man left.
- 12:03And the score at the end of the first half, the first inning, the Yankees nothing while the Giants coming to bat.
- 12:08We'll be back with more exciting action from the seventh game of the 1962 World Series after this.
- 12:15Excuse me sir, but what's that you're raising up there?
- 12:18That's the prime rate going up today.
- 12:20Oh, I see.
- 12:21Some days it goes up, some days it goes down.
- 12:23And what exactly does the prime rate do?
- 12:25Mostly it scares people silly.
- 12:27If the bank prime rate is scaring you out of a new car, ask your GM dealer about GMAC.
- 12:33GMAC has financing right now at rates that make sense.
- 12:36So get that new Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, Buick, Cadillac or GMC truck you want with help from GMAC.
- 12:42The financing people from General Motors.
- 12:44Your lawn could die of thirst this summer if it has to depend on the weather to get the water it needs.
- 12:49So be sure you've got quality hoses you can depend on from true value hardware stores.
- 12:53Hi, Pat Summerall to tell you, true value nylon reinforced vinyl hoses are designed to stand up to the heat and remain flexible in cold weather.
- 13:00And right now you can get their 60 foot true value hose for $9.99 or the super rugged 75 foot length for $14.99.
- 13:08Both have 5 eighths inch inner diameter and are available only from participating true value hardware stores.
- 13:14And now more action from game seven of the 1962 World Series.
- 13:19Well, no scores. We go into the bottom of the first inning.
- 13:23It'll be Philippe Allou to lead off for the Giants.
- 13:26He'll be followed by the second baseman Chuck Heller and then the center fielder Willie Mays.
- 13:31Ralph Terry completing his warm up tosses.
- 13:35Elston Howard goes down to suck him with the throw and we're ready to go.
- 13:39Allou, a right handed batter, has a 318 batting average.
- 13:43Seven hits and 22 trips.
- 13:45Allou has batted in one run in the series.
- 13:48This is the second inning of the 23rd and 2nd.
- 13:51It's a baby Allou.
- 13:56A very large and enthusiastic crowd on hand here today.
- 14:00And needless to say, giant routers here.
- 14:04Ralph Terry gets ready.
- 14:06The pitch to Allou. He swings and pops it up behind the plate.
- 14:10Here's Howard coming back. It's going to be out of play.
- 14:12This one back in the crowd.
- 14:15One strike to Allou.
- 14:21Terry won 23 ball games and lost 12 during the regular season.
- 14:25As we said previously, he's won one and lost one in this World Series.
- 14:32Allou taking a little time before he gets back in.
- 14:38Leap right down on the end of the bat.
- 14:41Terry into the wind up.
- 14:43He swings and hits a pop fly outside of first base.
- 14:46Skowron is over there waiting. He's got it.
- 14:49Moose was battling the high sky on that one.
- 14:51Philippe Allou fouls to the first baseman.
- 14:55We'll bring up the second baseman, Chuck Hiller.
- 14:58Chuck's a left handed batter. He has a 318 batting average.
- 15:01Seven hits and 22 trips.
- 15:04Chuck has one home run in this series.
- 15:06That was a grand slam homer. He's batted in five runs.
- 15:10Chuck chokes the bat.
- 15:15Terry, a tall, slender right hander.
- 15:18Chuck's his sign with Elston Howard.
- 15:20The pitch. Ball. It's outside.
- 15:23Hiller uses a big thick handle bat and during batting practice,
- 15:26it was almost game conditions for him as he sprayed the ball all over the ball park.
- 15:30He wasn't trying to hit one out of here.
- 15:31He was just trying to hit it right up the middle and to left field.
- 15:33Just hitting over the ball, hoping he could hit the ball down, get the ground ball base hit.
- 15:37There's the one and oh pitch. He swings and fouls it back.
- 15:40One ball, one strike.
- 15:48Chuck has had a couple of hits in the left field and the Yankees are playing him that way.
- 15:52Didn't get a chance to ask Alvin Dark, but I just wonder if it was on artist from him, George,
- 15:56but batting practice was no playful matter with these Giants.
- 15:59Larry Jansen threw a lot of curve balls and they were trying to do something with him.
- 16:02The pitch to Hiller. He swings and hits a high fly ball down the left field line.
- 16:06Here's Trash racing in the foul territory. Can't get it.
- 16:09The ball is in the seats.
- 16:14One ball and two strikes to Hiller.
- 16:17Trash had a little bit of trouble as he got near the bullpen.
- 16:20There was no chance to make the play, but I say trouble because he stumbled on the mound
- 16:24and he's kind of flexing his legs out there now because it's a high mound in the bullpen
- 16:30and he stumbled as he got near the wall.
- 16:33The wind does not seem to be blowing quite as hard now as it did at the start of this ballgame.
- 16:39One weatherman said here today the winds would be dying down during the afternoon.
- 16:45Terry gets ready. Here's the one-two pitch.
- 16:48Ball, it's down low. He got the fast ball over but too low.
- 16:51The count is even to Hiller at two and two.
- 16:54We're in the bottom of the first inning in case you joined us late.
- 16:57There's no score in the ballgame.
- 16:59Giants batting one out with no one on.
- 17:02Here's the two-two pitch. He swings and hits a bouncer to first.
- 17:06Garron has it. He steps on the bag and Chuck Hiller is out.
- 17:10That's two down and here's the center fielder, Willie Mays.
- 17:16Well, the applause reading Willie as he steps in.
- 17:19Mays, a tremendous favorite here in San Francisco and well, he should be.
- 17:24Willie's batting average in this series posted at 250.
- 17:29Six hits and 24 trips.
- 17:34Terry delivers. Here's a fly ball hit to left field.
- 17:37Tommy Trash moving in.
- 17:39He's got it. The side's retired.
- 17:41Willie Mays sending a fly ball to Trash in left field.
- 17:44No runs, no hits, no arrows, no one left.
- 17:47And the score at the end of one full inning of play.
- 17:49The Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 17:52The Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 17:54Game seven of the World Series of 1962 continues after this.

- 19:17Channel 2 News.
- 19:19Hello there, you. This is Johnny Donovan.
- 19:21I'll try to stump you with some tough trivia questions tomorrow afternoon on New York's radio station.
- 19:26W-A-B-C, New York.
- 19:29I'm Mel Allen and you're listening to Baseball's Greatest Hits on 77, W-A-B-C, New York's radio station.
- 19:39As we move along into the top of the second inning, there's no score in the ballgame.
- 19:43The Yankees had a base runner in the first inning.
- 19:45Bobby Richardson drew a walk, but he was stranded at first base.
- 19:48His trash fell to the third baseman and Mantle flied to left field.
- 19:53Roger Maris will be the leadoff man for the Yankees.
- 19:56He'll be followed by Elston Howard and then Bill Scouran.
- 20:03Roger has a 2-11 batting average, four hits and 19 trips.
- 20:06One home run and five runs batted in.
- 20:10Here's Sanford's first pitch. Ball, strike, he went up to the right hand.
- 20:15Maris was going to bunt.
- 20:18He raced up in front of the box, took the pitch and Landis went up to the right hand.
- 20:23Sanford ready? The pitch.
- 20:26Here's a line drive to the third baseman.
- 20:28Maris hit that one like a bullet.
- 20:30A liner right straight to Davenport at third base.
- 20:36That'll not only make you talk to yourself, but you'll enjoy the conversation with yourself.
- 20:40One guy over there hit a shot, something that Maris has been trying to do most of the series,
- 20:45and hit the ball very hard.
- 20:47Normally that would be a base hit, but Davenport playing wide of the bag,
- 20:50the only man over there in lower Slobovia, and he comes up with the play.
- 20:54Maris really mumbling as he went back to the bench and you can hardly blame him.
- 20:57I know what he's thinking, Joe. Only one man in about 150 feet there,
- 21:02and the ball hit like a bullet. He didn't have time to move and it's right in his glove.
- 21:07Well, there's one away and the batter will be Olsten Howard.
- 21:10Ellie has a 176 batting average, three hits in this series and 17 trips.
- 21:17Strong right-handed batter. Here's the pitch.
- 21:20Foul ball, it's back on the screen. One strike.
- 21:24Sanford using the little kick motion on that pitch, the first time he's used it today,
- 21:29but he's used it a lot throughout this series.
- 21:32I was talking to some of the Yankees on the plane coming out here from New York,
- 21:35and they said it was effective, very effective, especially with two strikes.
- 21:40George, it's also a telltale for manager Alvin Dark.
- 21:43When he gets sloppy with the leg movements, it's a tip-off he's getting tired.
- 21:47The pitch to Howard. Here's a ground ball hit to the third baseman.
- 21:51Davenport flips it over to first, he's out.
- 21:55Olsten Howard goes out. Davenport to Sepeda.
- 21:59That's two down and the batter will be Bill Scouran.
- 22:07Bill has a 214 batting average. He has three hits in 14 trips.
- 22:12One run batted in.
- 22:16Bill right down on the end of the bat.
- 22:19Sanford gets ready.
- 22:21Here's the first pitch. Ball, it's inside. One ball and no strikes.
- 22:25To give you an idea how hard the wind is blowing in from left field,
- 22:29Scouran unloaded one in batting practice.
- 22:31It looked like it was going into the bay and it hit the top of the fence and bounded back.
- 22:37The one-and-oh pitch. A swing and a foul tipped.
- 22:40This one falling right at the plate. One ball, one strike.
- 22:46We're in the top of the second inning. There's no score in the ball game.
- 22:50Two outs with no one on.
- 22:55Haller taking a little time. That ball might have hit him on the hand.
- 22:59Did nick him, George, and he walked out to kind of get his bearings back
- 23:03as he flipped the ball to Sanford. Now he'll take a little bit of time giving the signs.
- 23:09One ball, one strike to Scouran. Sanford gets ready.
- 23:13Here's the pitch. Curve ball, it's up high. Ball two and strike one.
- 23:18Sanford had great success against Howard and Scouran at Yankee Stadium.
- 23:22He was keeping the curve ball low and on the outside part of the plate,
- 23:26which is a good way to pitch anybody, Joe.
- 23:29Make an announcer out of all those guys who keep it there.
- 23:33Sanford taking a little time as he looks in.
- 23:37Here's the two-one pitch. He swings and bounces it foul off to the left.
- 23:41He's leaving the count at two and two.
- 23:43How about those clubhouse meetings? When you get stuck, they always say,
- 23:46well, keep that fast ball up and in. Be sure you get it in and that curve ball down.
- 23:49You got to get it down, though. And of course, it's always high and tight,
- 23:52low and away, which is the perfect pitching pattern.
- 23:55If you could do that, that Hall of Fame would really be crowded with pitchers.
- 23:58No hitters, definitely not. The only hitters that can hit that curve ball low and outside
- 24:02is like Bob Skinner said. That's the ball players that have gone to announcing.
- 24:05They can hit that curve ball low and outside.
- 24:09Ball two and a strike, two count. The scour and Sanford taking too much time to suit Bill,
- 24:14so he steps out. Moose just takes one step out of the box and looks out to Sanford
- 24:19as if to say, what's the reason for the delay?
- 24:23Now he's back in.
- 24:26Here's the two-two pitch. Inside, he got the fast ball too close.
- 24:30Three and two to Bill.
- 24:33Two outs with no one on. Here on the top of the second inning, there's no score.
- 24:38The seventh and final game of this 1962 World Series.
- 24:43Sanford ready. The pitch.
- 24:47Here's a ground ball hit slowly to the shortstop. Pagan has it. The throw to first, he's out.
- 24:52Bill's Calloran goes out. Short to first.
- 24:55No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left. And the score at the end of the first half,
- 24:59the second inning, the Yankees nothing, the Giants nothing.
- 25:03Back with more action from this classic World Series game of 1962 after this.
- 25:08This was for you. There's no one else who works you quite the way you do. The way you do. So here's to you. For all you do. You know the king of games is coming through. For all you do.
- 25:33This was for you. This was for you.
- 25:48You know there's no one else who judges you quite the way you do. For all you do. This was for you.
- 26:04And as a Bush, we say Bush.
- 26:06I'm Mel Allen and you're listening to Baseball's Greatest Hits on 77 WABC, New York's radio station.
- 26:16While we move along into the bottom of the second inning, no score in the ball game.
- 26:20Willie McCovey will lead off for the Giants. He'll be followed by Orlando Cepeda and then the catcher Tom Haller.
- 26:28It's Sanford against Terry here today in the seventh game.
- 26:32These pitchers meeting for the third time in this World Series. They each have a win.
- 26:39McCovey, a big left-handed batter, has a 182 batting average. Willie has two hits in the series and 11 trips.
- 26:47He has one home run and one run batted in. The homer coming against Terry here at Candlestick Park.
- 26:57The Yankees move deep and far to the right for McCovey.
- 27:01Here's the first pitch. Ball outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 27:07Terry, of course, will be trying to keep everything away from Willie.
- 27:11He'll want to hit that outside corner. McCovey looking for something inside that he can pull down that right field line.
- 27:19Here's the one and O pitch. He swings and pops it up outside of first base.
- 27:23Here's Howard chasing it along with Skour and Elston Howard is going to take the play on it. He does.
- 27:29A tough play for Howard as he was looking right up into the sun over near the giant dugout, but he made the catch.
- 27:36So there's one away and the batter will be Orlando Cepeda.
- 27:40One, two, three, third base, Orlando Cepeda.
- 27:47Orlando's batting average at 188. He has three hits in 16 trips. All three of Orlando's hits coming in yesterday's game.
- 27:55He has two runs batted in.
- 27:59Terry ready. The pitch. Here's a ground ball hit down the third base line. It's foul. Boy, you're moving across the line.
- 28:06A one strike down.
- 28:09Orlando was having some fun in the clubhouse after the game.
- 28:12Kidding with the newspaper man, how come they waited until yesterday to come around?
- 28:16He said, I've been with the club all World Series. Nobody come around.
- 28:19Of course, somebody just finally honestly gave the answer. He said, keep hitting and they'll be around. Don't hit and we'll see you.
- 28:25Here's the one strike pitch. Curve, it's in the dirt.
- 28:29Olsten Howard goes down on both knees to block this one. One ball, one strike.
- 28:35The Yankees shade him a little bit to right center.
- 28:38Mickey Mantle just a little bit to the right of second base, deep in the outfield.
- 28:44Here's the one-one pitch. Strike two. He cuts the corner with a good hard slider. One ball, two strikes.
- 28:52Cepeda hits very deep in the box.
- 28:58Terry ready. The one-two pitch. Curve down low. That'll even the count at two and two.
- 29:04Bottom of the second inning, there's one out with no one on. There's no score in the ball game.
- 29:10Only one baserunner so far in this game. Bobby Richardson drew a walk in the first inning.
- 29:18Terry looking in. Here's the two-two pitch. He swings and foul tips it right into the mid of Olsten Howard.
- 29:24A strikeout for Ralph Terry. That's two down and the batter will be the catcher, Tom Hollard.
- 29:34Tom has a 3.64 batting average. Four hits and 11 trips. That's one home run and three runs batted in.
- 29:42Tom's a tall left-handed batter.
- 29:49Terry into the windup. Here's the pitch. Strike. He got the fastball over the corner.
- 29:56A one-strike count to Tom Hollard batting in the second inning with two outs and no one on.
- 30:02The Yankees nothing and the Giants nothing.
- 30:07Terry pounds his glove. Here's the pitch. High pop fly behind shortstop.
- 30:12Kubek drifting back. Shades his eyes. He's got it. The side's retired.
- 30:16Tom Hollard pops to the shortstop. No runs, no hits, no arrows, no one left.
- 30:21And the score at the end of two, the Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 30:25Back with more of baseball's greatest hits on 77 WAVC in just a moment.

- 32:52Game 7 of 1962, featuring superstars Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris.
- 33:01At the end of 2, there's no score. For the Yankees, no runs, no hits, no errors. For the Giants, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 33:10It'll be Cletus Boyer to lead off. He'll be followed by Ralph Terry and then Tony Kuback.
- 33:16Jack Sanford still taking his warm-up classes. Jack was a little slow getting out to the mound.
- 33:27Tom Haller makes the throw down to second base. Clete Boyer steps in. We're ready to go here in the top of the third inning.
- 33:33Boy, this is it. All the pitchers are in the bullpen today.
- 33:38Even Billy Pierce for the Giants and Whitey Ford.
- 33:42For the Yankees, both said they would be ready to go again today.
- 33:49Boyer, a right-handed batter, has a.278 batting average.
- 33:53Clete has five hits in the series and 18 trips. Here's a line drive to right. Allou is there and he makes the pass.
- 33:59Boyer hit that one like a bullet. That's straight to Allou in right field.
- 34:05That's one away. And the batter will be Ralph Terry.
- 34:11Here's Ralph coming on. Stops at the on-deck circle. He gets the rosin on his hands.
- 34:18Willie Mays is the quarterback as far as the outfield is concerned. Moving the guys around.
- 34:23He just moved McCovey in. Willie plays pretty deep for just about everybody with Ralph Terry up there.
- 34:29Willie Mays wanting McCovey to move in because that wind is blowing directly in.
- 34:33Real tough job. Hit one hard and a left field to get over his head.
- 34:38Terry, a right-handed batter. Sanford ready. Here's the first pitch.
- 34:42Strike. He got a fastball right down the middle.
- 34:45A one-strike count to Ralph Terry. He's batting with one out and no one on in the third inning. No score in the ball game.
- 34:56Sanford looking in. Here's the pitch.
- 35:00Strike two. He caught the corner with this one. Strike two count.
- 35:07The Giants have shortened up all around. McCovey, Mays, and Allou shortened up and playing Ralph a little bit to right field.
- 35:19Sanford checks the sign. Here's the two-strike pitch. A swing and a miss.
- 35:25He tried to check it, but he'd gone too far on the low curve ball. Terry goes down swinging.
- 35:31It's the first strikeout in the ball game for Sanford. It's two down and the fighter will be Tony Kubek.
- 35:39Tony sent a fly ball to Willie Mays his first time at bat.
- 35:49Tony, a left-handed batter.
- 35:52Sanford ready. Here's the first pitch. A swing and a miss. Low curve at the knees. One strike to Kubek.
- 36:03The umpires today, Stan Landis is behind the plate. Jim Honachik at first base. Al Barlich at second base. Charlie Berry at third.
- 36:11Ken Burkhart and Hank Sore down the lines. Here's a fastball outside. One ball and one strike to Kubek.
- 36:19Ken Burkhart down the left field line and Hank Sore down the right field line.
- 36:30Sanford gets ready. Here's the one-one pitch. Outside again, trying to catch the corner with a fastball. Ball two and strike one.
- 36:39It's going to be a job for Kubek to try to hit a ball between McCovey and the line in left field.
- 36:44McCovey really guarding that line as if he wants to give Willie Mays as much running room as possible, George.
- 36:50Sanford into the windup. The two-one pitch. Here's a ground ball to left field. A solid base hit for Kubek as he punched an outside fastball between Davenport and Pagan into left field.
- 37:01That's the first hit of the ball game. What's a runner at first base with two outs? And the batter will be Bobby Richardson.
- 37:08Bobby drew a walk his first time at bat. Sanford wanted a new baseball after Kubek punched that one to left field. Stan Landis makes the exchange.
- 37:24Oh, we'll keep an eye on Kubek at first base. He might be running here with two outs. He's thrown out. The Yankees would still have Bobby Richardson to lead off in the next inning.
- 37:38Here's the pitch. Ball. It's up high. Bobby was ready to bunt. Shortened up, took the high pitch. One ball and no strikes. Davenport has moved in close at third.
- 37:51Jimmy is playing about even with the bag right now. A scoreless ball game. We're in the top of the third inning. Sanford gets that.
- 38:04Here's the one and oh pitch. Inside. Fastball in on the fifth. Ball two and no strikes. Jack has been having trouble getting the ball over to Bobby Richardson.
- 38:16He walked him his first time at bat on a 3-1 pitch. Now he's behind with a ball two and a no strike count. Jack checks his runner at first base.
- 38:30Quick throw to first. Kubek back in time. Boyer open this inning with a line drive to right. Terry struck out and Kubek single to left field.
- 38:42Here's the pitch. Strike. He got the fastball. Quick throw to first. Kubek back in time. Tony slipped. Haller made a wide throw.
- 38:51A good throw would have had him at first base as Kubek slipped. Bell trying to get back to first base and then he had to crawl to the bag.
- 38:59But Haller's throw was wide and Orlando Cepeda had no chance to put the tag on him.
- 39:07The tip off for the other base runners because Kubek wasn't really going anywhere. He was just trying to get back to first base. The footing is not solid.
- 39:14Here's the pitch to Richardson. Inside. He checked his swing on a high inside fastball. It's three and one to Bobby.
- 39:23Richardson out of the box for a moment looking down to third where he checks with Frankie Crossetti to see if the hit sign is on for this 3-1 pitch.
- 39:31He's one of those guys too who likes to know if that runner is going to break up that infield because he can pick his spots.
- 39:37Sanford gets that. Here's the pitch. Down low he walked him. Bobby Richardson walks again. That's two walks given up by Sanford. Both times it's been Bobby.
- 39:47So the Yankees have runners at first and second with two outs and the batter will be Tommy Trash, the left fielder.
- 39:55Tommy's 0-1. He fouled at Davenport his first time at bat. Well this is the first thread of the ball game. Two on with two outs.
- 40:11Giants play Trash pretty much straight away. Sanford gets that. Here's the first pitch. He swings and hits a high pop fly down the left field line.
- 40:23Davenport is chasing it along with McCovey but it's going back in the crowd. A high pop fly down the left field line near the giant bullpen.
- 40:34The wind moving that one right back into the crowd. A one strike count to Tommy Trash. Tommy has eight hits in this series.
- 40:50Duvec had seven going into this ball game. He's singled in this inning so he's all tied with Tommy for a number of hits.
- 41:00Sanford taking a little time as he looks in. Boy he doesn't want to make a mistake here.
- 41:06Here's the pitch. Ball outside. One and one to Trash.
- 41:13There was a three run homer by Trash in Yankee Stadium that beat Sanford in the fifth game of this series. A three run homer coming with a score tied at 2-2.
- 41:25Tommy chokes the bat a little bit as he waits. Here's the one-one pitch. Ball. It's up high. Ball two and strike one.
- 41:35Boy you can hear the rumble through this crowd every time Sanford delivers a bad pitch.
- 41:42Mickey Mantle is in the on deck circle Joe. You can bet that's one thing that Haller reminded Sanford about as he went out to talk to him.
- 41:49The one defense that you can't come up with is the one for the base on balls and with the wind the way it is here in this ballpark you want them to hit the ball because right now it's blowing directly in and it's not going to help any ball hit anywhere.
- 42:02It's going to hurt it but unless you get that ball in that strike zone you're going to be in serious trouble.
- 42:08Sanford gets set. Here's the two-one pitch. Ball outside, way outside. Three and one to Tommy Trash.
- 42:18Sanford is pitching high today. That is something unusual for him. In the first two games he was low Joe.
- 42:25Right and the two tip-offs as far as the pitching of Sanford is the leg motion. If he gets sloppy with that or gets the ball up it's an indication that he's not really sharp.
- 42:35He has to pitch down with everything. Jack taking a little time as he looks in. Yankees have runners at first and second with two outs.
- 42:46Here's the three-one pitch. Strike two off the outside corner with a fastball.
- 42:51Went right on the corner as he treaded the needle.
- 42:56So it's three and two to Tommy Trash. The runners will be moving three, two, and two outs. Go back at second base Bobby Richardson at first base.
- 43:06Sanford gets set. He whirls to throw to second. This holds the ball as nobody going over to cover.
- 43:14Boy the pickoff play at second base yesterday that did not work was a vital play in the ball game.
- 43:20Here's the pitch. A ground ball hit to the second baseman. Hiller has it. Here's the flip to Fergie now. Tommy Trash does out second to first.
- 43:31No runs in the inning on one hit. There were nowhere else two men left and the score at the end of the first half of the third inning the Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 43:39We'll be back with more exciting action from the seventh game of the 1962 World Series after this.
- 43:46Hi, Pat Summerall to remind you that good household help is hard to find except at True Value hardware stores.
- 43:52There you'll find a selection of quality designed rubber made products to provide helpful convenience all over the house.
- 43:58Use rubber made stackable storage bins to organize kitchen utensils or in the family room to store small toys and sewing notions.
- 44:06Rubber made shower accessories will help keep bathrooms looking neat.
- 44:09Plus you'll find durable rubber made pitchers, waste baskets and more at participating True Value hardware stores and home centers.
- 44:39And now more action from game seven of the 1962 World Series.
- 44:51We're going to the bottom of the third inning. No score in the ball game. The Yankees making a thread in the top of this inning.
- 44:59Two on with two outs and Trash bounced to the second baseman.
- 45:03That was a pretty good indication of what manager Dark has been saying about Sanford all year that he just won't give into that hitter when he got the three and two.
- 45:09It was a breaking ball at Trash hit.
- 45:11And even though Mickey Mantle was on deck, the big home run hitter, Sanford was not going to give in to Trash and match him with the fastball.
- 45:18He went to the breaking ball and Tommy was a bit out in front of it. Hit a nice round ball to Hiller and Sanford was out of it.
- 45:24Dark has said it so many times that Sanford will just will not give into the hitter.
- 45:28And that's been the difference in just being a good and a great pitcher.
- 45:32Here's Jimmy Davenport to lead off for the Giants in the bottom of the third inning.
- 45:36Ralph Terry delivers. Strike. He got the fastball over.
- 45:40A one strike count. Davenport's batting average, 158. He has three hits and 19 trips.
- 45:46Jimmy has one run batted in. Boy, he's made some great plays at third base throughout this series.
- 45:52Here's a foul ball. It'll be out of play. It's been coming back into the upper deck.
- 45:58A strike two count. Jimmy made one good play today.
- 46:03Might have been in self-defense as Roger Maris slammed a bullet at him at third base. He got the glove up in time.
- 46:12Terry ready. The pitch. Foul ball. He checked his swing.
- 46:16Ball hit his bat, sailed over the giant dugout back into the lower deck.
- 46:21Still strike two. We're in the bottom of the third inning. There's no score in the ball game.
- 46:26Jimmy Davenport, the leadoff man for the Giants.
- 46:31Terry into the windup. Here's the pitch. In tight. He pushed him back.
- 46:36One ball, two strikes. Terry has thrown mostly fastballs today.
- 46:43He will throw a lot of slow curves before the afternoon is over.
- 46:47Here's the one-two pitch. Fastball hit on the ground foul.
- 46:52Still a ball and two strikes. Joe, I think the wind might affect the pitching some way.
- 46:58I think pitchers like to throw the curves into the wind, don't they?
- 47:01When it's blown away, it is, George. You get that big break and they don't have good control of it.
- 47:05I know, Terry, we mentioned it. He came out mighty, mighty early to warm up.
- 47:08Here's the one-two pitch. Here's the curve. It's up high. Two and two to Davenport.
- 47:13It's not that good quick breaker, that dive bomber type curve ball.
- 47:17You can still control that pretty well, but that big lolly top, that big roundhouse curve ball,
- 47:21that's the one that's a little bit of a problem on a day like today.
- 47:26Terry gets ready. Here's the two-two pitch.
- 47:29High fly ball hit down the right field line. Richardson chasing it along with Maris.
- 47:34The wind is taking it away from Bobby and he can't make a play on it.
- 47:40Bobby was having all kinds of trouble, not only with the wind, but with a high sky and the sun here.
- 47:47He chased it over near the stands and he finally overran the ball. It fell behind him.
- 47:52See, Bobby, take a look too at just how close he was to those stands.
- 47:56It's a tough thing to get familiar with it because unless you hit the warning track,
- 47:59which is some eight or nine feet from the stands, and you can feel that gravel under your feet,
- 48:04you're really not sure where you are. There's a lot of room to roam here.
- 48:07I tell you, you start to run a few feet, you can get lost. Bobby had all kinds of problems on that one.
- 48:13Here's the two-two pitch. A swing and a foul tip. This one pops out of the mid of Howard coming behind the plate.
- 48:19Still two and two. Jimmy Davenport, the laid-off man for the Giants in the bottom of the third inning.
- 48:26Well, you can hear the rhythmic applause of the Giants fans as they want Davenport to get something going here in the third inning.
- 48:34Ralph Terry delivers another foul ball. This will be out of play.
- 48:45The Yankees have no runs on one hit. No errors. The Giants have no runs, no hits, and they have no errors.
- 48:53The Yankees had a threat going in the top of this inning. They had two on with two outs,
- 48:57but Tommy Trash bounced to the second baseman to end that one.
- 49:01Here's the pitch. A ground ball hit foul down the third baseline.
- 49:06And Davenport making Terry pitch here in the third inning.
- 49:13Terry has good control. He'll be right around the plate all the time.
- 49:17He's keeping these pitches low and away, and Davenport just getting a piece of them.
- 49:25Jimmy chokes the bat, crouches over the plate. The 2-2 pitch. Another foul ball off to the left.
- 49:32Still two and two. Well, the crowd getting quite a thrill out of this as Davenport has fouled off some seven or eight pitches.
- 49:43It doesn't bother you too much when you catch him, when your fellow's trying like Davenport,
- 49:47when they deliberately, like a hemos or a Harry Walker, used to just follow him off to get that base on ball.
- 49:51That kind of bugged you a little bit.
- 49:55Terry gets ready. The 2-2 pitch. There's a high foul ball hit in the shallow center field.
- 50:00Richardson going out. Now Bobby's calling for it. He's got it.
- 50:04Why? He wasn't at all sure of it. Bobby almost down on one knee as he made the catch on that one.
- 50:10Now it was just a bit disgusting because Mickey thought he was going to catch that ball,
- 50:15and that flag just blown directly in and flew right to Bobby Richardson.
- 50:19And Joe is constantly checking with the flag. It could be a very embarrassing situation.
- 50:26I still think this win, Joe, is going to be a big factor in this ball game before it's over.
- 50:30It seemed to die down for a moment, but right now it is really whipping the flags in center field.
- 50:36Here's Jose Pagan, the shortstop. Terry delivers a curve. He bounces it to third.
- 50:41Boyer has it to throw to first. He's out. Pagan goes out on the first pitch, third to first.
- 50:47Well, that's two down. It'll bring up the pitcher, Jack Sanford.
- 50:50Pagan and Jack Sanford.
- 50:55There's a big round of applause for Sanford as he comes on.
- 50:59Boy, Jack has been quite a pitcher in this World Series.
- 51:03Won the first game, 2-0. He was tied 2-2 in the second game he pitched, going into the eighth inning.
- 51:10Two singles and a home run. And the Yankees won that one 5-3.
- 51:16Ralph Terry delivers. Strike. He got the curve ball over. A one-strike count.
- 51:21They'll treat this Sanford with a lot of respect. He's a pretty good hitter. He swings that bat.
- 51:29Jack choking the bat as he waits on Terry. The pitch. Strike. Two. Fastball over the outside part of the plate.
- 51:37A two-strike count.
- 51:39We're in the bottom of the third inning. There's two outs with no one on. There's no score in the game.
- 51:44The Giants and the Yankees in the seventh game of the 62nd World Series.
- 51:52Terry gets ready. Here's the two-strike pitch. Fly ball hit in the center field.
- 51:57Nicky Mantle is waiting on this one. He's got it. The side's retired.
- 52:01Jack Sanford flying to Mantle in center field. No runs, no hits, no arrows, no one left.
- 52:06And the score at the end of three. The Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 52:10Game seven of the World Series of 1962 continues after this.
- 52:16The 77 WABC. We like your style. An afternoon in Central Park. Manhattan skyline at the dark. A visit to the Statue of Liberty. Fifth Avenue and Wall Street. The highway where we all meet. As much a part of New York as WABC.
- 52:45The crowd at subway stations. The United Nations. The nightlife that can set your spirit free.
- 52:57Trip King in Newark. The railroads we're made to work. As much a part of New York as WABC. 77 WABC. Pop-a-licious bubble crowd. The ultimate bubble has the ultimate flavor.
- 53:20Said an airline pilot named Evans, I'm tired of those 707s. So without any trouble, he blew the ultimate bubble. And now Evans orbits the heavens. The juiciest orange, wildest strawberry, boldest banana.
- 53:33The ultimate bubble has the ultimate flavors. Taste so real, it'll blow you away. Pop-a-licious.
- 53:43Mind if I look over your shoulder? That's the only book they have in the pyramid. Shh, this is a library. Gee, your hair smells terrific. What did you say? Gee, your hair smells terrific. Oh my God, your message. And so did the librarian.
- 53:57When you use, gee, your hair smells terrific. Shampoo. Boy, say, gee, your hair smells terrific to you. Gee shampoo and conditioner for hair that's clean, shiny, manageable, terrific.
- 54:14You're listening to Faceball's Greatest Hits, World Series Games of the Past on New York's Yankee Station.
- 54:20W-A-B-C, New York.
- 54:35Mickey Mantle will be the leadoff man in the fourth inning for the Yankees. He'll be followed by Roger Maris and then Elston Howard.
- 54:44Mickey flied to left field his first time at bat. That was back in the first inning. Mickey, a switch hitter batting left-handed against the right-hander, Jack Sanford.
- 54:53Only one hit in this game so far. That was a single to left field by Tony Kubek.
- 55:01Sanford gets ready and here's the pitch to Mantle. Ball. It's up back. One ball and no strikes.
- 55:08While warming up between innings, Tom Haller, the catcher, was really giving Sanford a low target, hoping that he could get him down.
- 55:15He's been up with all his pitches and when a fellow is up like that, you try to give as low a target as possible, even out of the strike zone low, to make sure he holds on that ball a little bit longer.
- 55:25Here's the one-and-oh pitch. Strike. He caught the corner with this one. One-and-one. Mickey turns to look to Stan Landis.
- 55:36A ball and a strike to Mantle leading off for the Yankees in the fourth inning. A scoreless ball game here at Candlestick Park.
- 55:45Another bright, sunshiny afternoon. Not a cloud in the sky here in San Francisco.
- 55:52Strong breeze blowing in from left field, right straight to home plate. Now at one time it was blowing across to the corner in right field, but now it's blowing straight into the plate.
- 56:02A pitch to Mickey. Here's a pop fly. It'll be out of play coming back in the crowd.
- 56:07Mantle is trying to get out of the way of a high inside fastball to hit his bat and sails back. So it's one ball and two strikes.
- 56:20Roger Maris is waiting in the on-deck circle.
- 56:27Sanford taking a lot of time between pitches. Jack is being very careful here today.
- 56:33Still checking his sign with Haller. Here's the one-two pitch. A swing and a miss. He struck him out. Mickey Mantle, a long curve ball, strikes out.
- 56:45One away and the batter will be Roger Maris. Rides at a vicious line drive straight to Davenport, his first time at bat.
- 57:02The Giants go deep and far to the right for Maris. They play him as a pull hitter all the way. Three infielders on the right side. Sanford delivers outside.
- 57:14One ball and no strikes. We'll talk about stacking the deck, Joe. They not only put three infielders on one side, but they pitch him on the outside part of the play.
- 57:23Put two outfielders behind the three infielders. Looks like a convention on that side.
- 57:27Here's the one-and-oh pitch. He swings and hits a high fly ball down the left field line. Davenport is chasing it, but this one's going back in the crowd.
- 57:40Well, some spectator, Joe, I think got hit with that one on the head trying to make a play. He probably found out how tough it is for these fielders today.
- 57:54One ball, one strike to Roger Maris.
- 58:00Roger right down on the end of the bat waiting on Jack Sanford. Here's the one-one pitch. He swings and hits a bouncer to third. Davenport has it. The long throw to first. He's out.
- 58:13Roger Maris trying to punch the ball into left field. Hit a one hopper right straight to Davenport at third base. So there's two down and the batter will be Elston Howard.
- 58:28Howard is 0-1. He bounced to the third baseman his first time in bat.
- 58:36We're in the top of the fourth inning. There's two outs with no one on. There's no score in the ball game.
- 58:43Here's the pitch. Strike. He got a fast ball over. One strike to Elston Howard.
- 58:51The Yankees have had three baserunners. Bobby Richardson has walked twice. Kubek has had a single. The Giants have not had a baserunner in this game.
- 59:01Here's the pitch. A high pop fly on the infield. Chuck Heller at second base is calling for it. Now Pagan is there and Pagan's going to make the play.
- 59:11Heller has ball for the ball and Pagan playing the wind moved in near the bag at second to make the catch. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left and the score at the end of the first half of the fourth inning.
- 59:22The Giants nothing, the Yankees nothing. Back with more action from this classic World Series game of 1962 after this.
- 59:30Let a three-time Indy 500 winner and current national driving champion tell you why he asks for Pennzoil motor oil.
- 59:38Hi, I'm Johnny Rutherford. We use Pennzoil in the race car for top engine protection at high speeds.
- 59:44But in my own car, I want engine protection plus good gas mileage. That's why I'm more of a Pennzoil fan now than ever.
- 59:51Because Pennzoil does save gasoline. You see, Pennzoil engineers have made it even more slippery.
- 59:57This means there's less friction where engine metal meets engine metal. So the engine runs easier. And the easier an engine runs, the less gasoline it drinks up.
- 1:00:05Johnny Rutherford knows gas-saving Pennzoil, there's quality in every extra mile, available in 10W-30 and 10W-40.
- 1:00:14America has asked for Pennzoil since America learned to drive. Pennzoil, he asked for motor oil. Pennzoil.
- 1:00:30I'm Mel Allen, and you're listening to Baseball's Greatest Hits on 77 WABC, New York's radio stations.
- 1:00:39Now we move along into the bottom of the fourth inning. No score in the ball game.
- 1:00:45George, you remember the little things about the different hitters. Philippe Olu, who's going to lead off this inning, has a leadoff man.
- 1:00:51The Yankees have been going through the curve ball, and he's been jumping on the first pitch.
- 1:00:55He's really become a first-ball hitter when he's in the leadoff slot. We'll see if he jumps on that first one this time.
- 1:01:02Both Sanford and Terry hooked up once again. I think the individual pitching when these two guys hooked up has just been tremendous throughout the series.
- 1:01:11Allen, another great one going here today. Philippe Olu to lead it off. He'll be followed by Chuck Heller and then Willie Mays.
- 1:01:20Olu fouled to the first baseman, Scarron, his first time at bat. Philippe right down on the end of the bat, waiting on Ralph Terry.
- 1:01:30Here's the first pitch. Ball, it's inside. One ball and no strikes. The Yankees play in the left field.
- 1:01:40They play deep for Olu. This is the one-and-oh pitch. There's a high fly ball hit the shallow left.
- 1:01:47Trash is having trouble with this when he's moving in now. Still racing in, and he makes the catch on the run.
- 1:01:53Tommy Trash lost the ball. He was still looking up into the sky. At the last moment he came racing in, he caught it about knee-high.
- 1:02:01During batting practice, all the outfielders, they couldn't wait to get out there and have the coaches hit them the high fly ball,
- 1:02:09but really it doesn't help that much because the wind is constantly shifting. Right now it's blowing directly in.
- 1:02:17What you can do is try to, what is it, Kentucky windage you used in the Army charge? You kind of play the wind.
- 1:02:23I don't know, but I don't want to play that left field today. A shortstop or third base either on these muck flies.
- 1:02:29Chuck Heller, the batter, bounced to the first baseman, his first time at bat. Terry delivers. Here's a fly ball hit in the shallow center.
- 1:02:36Mickey Mantle is racing in. He's still coming, and he's got it. And Mickey was having trouble on that one as he was racing in from center field.
- 1:02:45That's two down, and the batter will be Willie Mays.
- 1:02:54Willie's 0-1 in this game. He sent a fly ball to Trash in left field his first time.
- 1:03:00The Giants will hit a lot of balls in the air here today because Terry is that type pitcher.
- 1:03:10He throws the fast ball up high, hit it up in the air, and he throws the slow curve ball.
- 1:03:15They have a tendency to get under it and loft it into the air.
- 1:03:21Here's the pitch to Willie. Fast ball, it's in there. One strike.
- 1:03:25Mays the batter in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and no one on, no score in the game.
- 1:03:35Here's the one strike pitch. High fly ball hit in the right center field. Mickey Mantle moving over.
- 1:03:40This ball is carrying in. Now Mickey's having trouble. He makes a one-handed catch at the last moment.
- 1:03:45Mantle seemed to lose the ball. Maris came racing over to catch it, and Mickey made a one-handed catch.
- 1:03:52No runs, no hits, no arrows, no one left, and the score at the end of four, the Yankees nothing, the Giants nothing.
- 1:03:58Back with more of baseball's greatest hits on 77 WAVC in just a moment.
- 1:04:04Hi, I'm Dan Ingram. We'll see you Monday from 3 to 7 on 77 WAVC, New York's radio station.
- 1:04:26Only the Army offers you a two-year enlistment with skilled training, travel, and college benefits. See your recruiter.
- 1:04:43Paid for by the U.S. Army. Search presents the encounter.
- 1:04:47The flank was at best uneventful. I took out my search. Refreshing. I guess she was a baggage claim, but it wasn't until...
- 1:04:53Taxi! I think I was here first. Well, let's share the ride. I found myself face to face with the most beautiful girl in the world.
- 1:05:01Glad I had that certs. Only certs has a great taste, plus a glistening drop of red sun and a fresh, clean flavor to get your breath fresh enough to go face to face.
- 1:05:09Where are you going? Wherever you are. Certs. For breath that's face to face fresh.
- 1:05:1477 WAVC with baseball's greatest hits. Special rebroadcasts of actual World Series games of the past.
- 1:05:23Game 7 of 1962 featuring superstars Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris.
- 1:05:37Now George Kell and Joe Garagiola back at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. A scoreless ballgame as we go into the fifth inning.
- 1:05:46No runs on one hit for the Yankees. No runs, no hits for the Giants.
- 1:05:51Bill Scowron will lead off for New York. Bill bounced to the shortstop his first time. He swings and misses on a fastball. One strike.
- 1:06:02It will be Scowron, Boyer, and Terry, the first three batters for New York.
- 1:06:10Sanford gets ready. Here's the one strike pitch. Inside he gets the curve low and in. One ball, one strike.
- 1:06:19The Yankees have had three base runners, two on walks, one on a single, and the Giants are looking for their first base runner.
- 1:06:28Here's the one-one pitch. In the dirt with a curve, scooped up by Tom Haller. It's a ball two and a strike one count.
- 1:06:40The Giants play Scowron deep and straight away. Bill hits to all field, mostly in the right center and left center.
- 1:06:48He is not a pull hitter. He does not hit a lot of balls down the right field line.
- 1:06:53Here's the pitch. He swings and bounces it foul through the coaching box at third base. Frankie Crossetti has to skip a little rope to get out of the way of this one.
- 1:07:02Crossetti is coaching at third base, and Wally Moses, the coach at first base for the Yankees.
- 1:07:12Two and two to Scowron, leadoff man for the Yankees in the fifth inning.
- 1:07:17Here's the pitch. He swings and hits a ground ball to left field, just out of the reach of the gun.
- 1:07:22Bill Scowron with a solid single. That's hit number two for the Yankees.
- 1:07:28It's a runner at first base with no one out, and the batter will be Cleet Boyer.
- 1:07:36Boyer hit the ball hard his first time at bat. He lined it straight to Alou in right field.
- 1:07:48Cleet, a right-handed batter, 278 batting average in the series.
- 1:07:53Here's the pitch. A swing and a miss. He was trying to drill the ball past Davenport at third base.
- 1:07:59Jimmy playing in close. He is not looking for the bunt, but he's going to be ready in case Boyer drops one.
- 1:08:12Sanford looking in. Jack taking a lot of time between pitches.
- 1:08:19Checks his runner at first base. The pitch. Strike two. He got the slider over the outside corner.
- 1:08:26A two-strike count to Cleet Boyer.
- 1:08:32Bill Scowron opened this inning with a ground ball single to left. He's at first base with no one out.
- 1:08:41Sanford checks the sign with Haller.
- 1:08:48Here's the pitch to Cleet. Way outside with this one. Haller hanging that one in the webbing of his mitt.
- 1:08:55They don't expect Boyer to try to hit that ball to right field. Second baseman Hiller is cheating towards the bag.
- 1:09:01Pagan is kind of protecting that hole between short and third. It'll be Hiller who is over near second base to make the pivot.
- 1:09:08Boyer choking the bat as he waits on Sanford.
- 1:09:14Here's the one-two pitch. He swings and hits a slider in the left center. This may be up the middle. It is.
- 1:09:20Scowron on his way to third. Boyer is going to hold on with a single as Willie Mays grabbed that ball and fired it into second base.
- 1:09:28On a dry field, that ball would have rolled all the way to the fence. It hit in the wet dirt and stopped.
- 1:09:34Willie Mays picked it up, rifled it into second base, and Boyer holds on with a long single.
- 1:09:40Jack Sanford talking now with his catcher hands on his hips. He's a bit disgusted because that was a big high-hanging curve ball, and Boyer really jumped on it.
- 1:09:49It was a room service pitch, and he just drilled it. I thought it was going to get by as it plugged the gap, but of course, Willie Mays in center field, one of the great ones,
- 1:09:58keeps the double play in order by holding Boyer at first base with a real long single, and that curve certainly did stop that ball.
- 1:10:05Well, the Yankees have runners at first and third. No one out, and the batter will be Ralph Terry.
- 1:10:11Here's the way the Giants are going to play their infield, Davenport, even with the bag at third. He's ready for a play at the plate.
- 1:10:17Sapeta, of course, holds against the runner at first base.
- 1:10:20Hiller has moved in a couple of steps from second, and Pagan a step or so at shortstop.
- 1:10:28Here's the pitch to Terry. Ball, it's in tight. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:10:33See, the bullpen is up, George. Stu Miller, a right-hander, and Billy O'Dell, a left-hander, throwing for the Giants.
- 1:10:41You can bet everybody's going to be ready in this ball game today. No score in the fifth inning. The Yankees are threatening.
- 1:10:49Here's the pitch to Terry. Inside again, he almost hit him with a fastball. It's ball two and no strikes.
- 1:11:00Bill Skowin opened this inning with a ground ball single to left.
- 1:11:03Clayt Boyer followed with a long single in the left center, and the Yankees have runners at first and third with no one out.
- 1:11:12Sanford gets set. A pitch to Terry. Inside again, another fastball to push him back.
- 1:11:19Three and 0 to Terry. Sanford seems to be laboring a little right now. He was just aiming that pitch, Joe.
- 1:11:28Exactly what he was doing. He was aiming it. His pattern has been to be wild high, and Haller, I'm sure, when a fellow has a pattern one way like wild high,
- 1:11:37it's because he's standing straight up to throw it, and vice versa if he's bouncing the balls because he's bending too far and holding on too long.
- 1:11:44But on this particular wild sequence of Terry, he's just been aiming the ball, trying to throw strikes, and hasn't been able to do it.
- 1:11:50Here's a three and 0 pitch. Ball. It's down low. Terry draws a walk. That'll load the bases with no one out.
- 1:11:58And here's manager Al Dark on the run out to the mound.
- 1:12:03Sanford seemed to be laboring as he was pitching to Terry, especially on the last two pitches.
- 1:12:09As Joe pointed out, he was just aiming the ball over the plate. Of course, he didn't get him over, so Terry draws a walk, and that's a big play for the Yankees.
- 1:12:17And the big danger point to think that Alvin Dark is trying to protect against is that your pitcher letting up.
- 1:12:23You don't want him to let up the throw or strike. You want him to keep good stuff.
- 1:12:26And I'm sure if Alvin Dark is going to let him in, he hasn't made any decisions. Just standing out there talking while a bullpen is getting hot.
- 1:12:31West Westrom is up, and he has just given a sign to Dark that if he wants to make a move, they are ready, but Sanford will stay in.
- 1:12:38And about all a manager says when he comes out in a spot like that is that you've been a fine pitcher all year by throwing that ball hard.
- 1:12:45Just cut it loose, don't aim it, and throw strikes. Give the infielders and outfielders a chance to make a play for you.
- 1:12:52So the bases are loaded with no one out, and the batter will be Tony Kuback. Tony's had one hit in two trips.
- 1:13:01He flied to center field in the first inning, singled in the third.
- 1:13:08Sanford looking in to get the sign. Here's the pitch to Kuback. Ball outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 1:13:17All the Giants are playing about halfway on the infield with the exception of Davenport, who is in even with the bag.
- 1:13:24Jimmy is ready to make a play at the plate.
- 1:13:27Sopeta, Hiller, and Pagan could go either way. It will depend on how hard the ball is hit.
- 1:13:34If it's hit hard enough for the double play, more than likely they'll go in that direction. Otherwise, they'll be coming to the plate.
- 1:13:41Here's the one and no pitch. Ball way outside with this one. It's 2-0 to Kuback.
- 1:13:49Sanford having a little control problem.
- 1:13:52Georgia might just go a step further on the defense, and the outfield is in very shallow, and on the fly ball,
- 1:13:58with the way that wind is blowing, it might be a problem for Scarron to score.
- 1:14:02Of course, these Yankees are letting Sanford pitch, and he's falling behind. He's 2-0.
- 1:14:06Interesting to see what Hock is. Ordered right here.
- 1:14:09Sanford into the windup to pitch. Strike! He got the fastball over.
- 1:14:14Kuback was taking all the way on it.
- 1:14:18Hock coming in with a fastball around the knees. It's a ball two and a strike one count.
- 1:14:26A scoreless ball game. We're in the fifth inning.
- 1:14:29The Yankees threatening. The base is loaded. No one out.
- 1:14:32Sanford ready. Here's the 2-1 pitch. A ground ball hit to the shortstop.
- 1:14:36They're going for two to second. One out. Back to first. A double play.
- 1:14:42Kuback takes the ball to Fagan, who flipped it over to Hiller, and back to Cepeda in time for the double play,
- 1:14:48as Bill Scarron comes in to score, and the Yankees go out in front one to nothing.
- 1:14:58Boyer moves to third base with two outs, and the batter will be Bobby Richardson.
- 1:15:06Bobby's been to the plate twice. He's walked both times.
- 1:15:11Davenport still playing in close. He'll be watching a bun in this situation.
- 1:15:17Here's the pitch to Bobby. A swing and a foul. This one back to the screen.
- 1:15:22He's getting that ball up, and you can see him shake his head out on the mound.
- 1:15:25Sanford a bit disgusted because he's been getting that ball up in their eyes,
- 1:15:29and George Eave and I would take a whack at that high curve ball because you just can't order a better pitch
- 1:15:34in that big, nice, high-hanging curve ball. And when Richardson saw that one, he had a pretty good cut at it.
- 1:15:41They say all the country boys like the high fast ball, but I think everybody likes the high fast ball.
- 1:15:46Boy, that's the international pitch.
- 1:15:49A one-strike count to Bobby Richardson.
- 1:15:52The Yankees have a runner at third base with two outs. They lead 1-0 in this game.
- 1:15:58Sanford gets ready. Here's the pitch. High pop fly on the infield.
- 1:16:03Zepeda at first base moving into foul territories there.
- 1:16:08Richardson now at the first. One run on three hits for the Yankees.
- 1:16:12No errors. One man left. And the score at the end of the first half of fifth inning,
- 1:16:16the Yankees won and the Giants nothing.
- 1:16:19We'll be back with more exciting action from the seventh game of the 1962 World Series after this.
- 1:16:26You know, Mr. Howell, this old car here takes more gas than anybody else's in town.
- 1:16:31No.
- 1:16:32Ever think of trading it in? With all that chrome, it ought to be worth a lot.
- 1:16:35Yeah, but look, who can buy a new car with the prime rate so high?
- 1:16:39If the bank prime rate is scaring you out of a new car or truck, ask your GM dealer about GMAC.
- 1:16:45GMAC has financing right now at rates that make sense.
- 1:16:49So get that new Chevy, Pontiac, Olds, Buick, Cadillac or GMC truck you want with help from GMAC,
- 1:16:55the financing people from General Motors.
- 1:17:23And now, more action from game seven of the 1962 World Series.
- 1:17:38Now we go into the bottom of the fifth inning.
- 1:17:41Willie McCovey will be the leadoff man. He'll be followed by Orlando Cepeda and then Tom Heller.
- 1:17:48The Yankees leading in this ball game by a score of one to nothing.
- 1:17:55Bill Scourne had just called time.
- 1:17:58He wants a pair of sunglasses from the Yankee dugouts, the bat boy moving out.
- 1:18:04McCovey is 0 for 1 in the game. He fouled the catcher Howard his first time in bat.
- 1:18:10Well, Sanford had the bases loaded with no one out, but he got out of it with only one run,
- 1:18:15which was about as well as the Giants could hope for.
- 1:18:18Here's the pitch. Strike. Terry delivers a fastball over the outside corner.
- 1:18:27Willie McCovey, a tall left-handed batter.
- 1:18:31Here's the pitch. Outside, trying to get the corner again.
- 1:18:35One and one to Willie.
- 1:18:37He'll be followed by Cepeda and then Tom Heller.
- 1:18:45After this.
- 1:18:46Now playing on New York's radio station, the New York Yankees.
- 1:18:50We've got all the pinstripes and they're back on the field and back on the air.
- 1:18:54Follow Winfield, Pennella, Nettles, Mercer, Dent.
- 1:18:57This is where New York follows its baseball team.
- 1:19:00That's right, the Yanks are back and this is the place you can hear them.
- 1:19:0477 WABC.
- 1:19:12He just gave you your keepsake diamond engagement ring and everyone staring at your hand
- 1:19:17because a keepsake is special. With a keepsake, you can't make a mistake.
- 1:19:22You're gonna be so proud. You're gonna feel like you're walking on a cloud. When you show them your keepsake diamond, you're gonna be so proud.
- 1:19:36Jim, the jungle is so exciting.
- 1:19:39In the binoculars, I can see it.
- 1:19:41Wild beasts?
- 1:19:42No, I can see Caffrey's sugarless gum has more flavor.
- 1:19:44How can you see more flavor?
- 1:19:46Look, the scale proves it. Caffrey weighs 32% more than Trident's smaller sticks.
- 1:19:51Caffrey's got more gum and more flavor.
- 1:19:54See, more gum gives you more flavor.
- 1:19:56Jim, the leopard!
- 1:19:58Don't worry, I've got him spotted.
- 1:20:01You can see it's got more flavor. Caffrey's sugarless gum.
- 1:20:05Hello, we're Ross and Wilson.
- 1:20:07Join us tomorrow morning when we cure the common cold right here on New York's radio station.
- 1:20:12WABC, New York.
- 1:20:14This hits on 77 WABC, New York's radio station.
- 1:20:19Well, at the end of five, the Yankees have one run on three hits and no errors.
- 1:20:23The Giants have no runs, no hits, and they have no errors.
- 1:20:26Ground ball by Hiller in the first to Schauer, and a ground ball by Paganda Boyer, and a ground ball by Tom Haller back to Ralph Terry,
- 1:20:34the only ground ball's hit off the right hand of the Yankees.
- 1:20:36And that's Sanford, got out of a big jam on the fifth, so once again they're hooked up.
- 1:20:42Tommy Trash will be the leadoff man for New York.
- 1:20:46He'll be followed by Mickey Mantle and then Roger Maris.
- 1:20:51Tommy's 0 for 2. He fouled the third baseman back in the first inning, and he bounced a second in the third inning.
- 1:20:59Sanford ready, and here's the pitch.
- 1:21:01High foul ball, it'll be out of play.
- 1:21:03This one off the third base side.
- 1:21:05One strike to Tommy.
- 1:21:10A 1-0 ball game. We're in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:21:16Trash chokes the bat as he waits on Sanford.
- 1:21:19The pitch, he bumps, it's up in the air.
- 1:21:21Sepeta is moving in fast and makes the catch.
- 1:21:25Tommy Trash trying to drag the ball down the first baseline, popped it up.
- 1:21:29Orlando Sepeta moved into foul territory to make the grab.
- 1:21:33That's one away, and the batter will be Mickey Mantle.
- 1:21:39Mickey has flied to left and struck out in two trips.
- 1:21:48The Yankees won, the Giants nothing here in the sixth inning.
- 1:21:53Here's the pitch to Mantle.
- 1:21:55Ball down low.
- 1:21:57One ball, no strikes.
- 1:22:00Boy, a Lou is deep in right field and near the line.
- 1:22:03May is playing just a little bit in the right center, not too much, and McCovey playing in straightaway left field.
- 1:22:09They're all deep.
- 1:22:14Sanford into the windup, the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:22:17Down low, another curve below the knees.
- 1:22:19Ball two, and no strikes.
- 1:22:25The Yankees picked up a run in the fifth inning.
- 1:22:27That's been the only scoring in this game.
- 1:22:32Sanford gets ready.
- 1:22:34Here's the 2-0 pitch.
- 1:22:35Outside, this one off the corner.
- 1:22:373-0 to Mickey.
- 1:22:41The fellow hasn't been hitting, and has the power of Mantle.
- 1:22:44He certainly has to be careful.
- 1:22:45He might turn him loose 3-0, see if he can pick up a quick run.
- 1:22:51The Mickey's right down on the end of the bat, waiting.
- 1:22:54Here's the pitch.
- 1:22:55Down low, he walked him.
- 1:22:56I believe he was going to swing at it.
- 1:22:58Mickey was ready, but the pitch was too low.
- 1:23:00So Mantle draws a walk.
- 1:23:02That's the fourth walk given up by Sanford, and the batter is Maris.
- 1:23:05George Don Larson gets up in the giant bullpen now, and starts to loosen up.
- 1:23:09So there is a third pitcher in the bullpen used by a manager, Alvin Dark,
- 1:23:13General Dell, Stu Miller, and now Don Larson.
- 1:23:18Roger Maris has lined to the third baseman, and bounced to the third baseman in two trips.
- 1:23:26Mantle at first base with one out here in the sixth inning.
- 1:23:29Sanford gets set.
- 1:23:31Makes a quick throw to first.
- 1:23:33He is out.
- 1:23:34Mantle at first base.
- 1:23:52Jack Sanford caught Mickey Mantle leaning towards second.
- 1:23:55He made a quick throw to first, and he picked him off.
- 1:23:59Oh, there's two outs.
- 1:24:02Roger Maris, the batter.
- 1:24:06Here's the pitch.
- 1:24:07Strike, he got a fastball over.
- 1:24:09Boy, that play brought this crowd to its feet.
- 1:24:13Mantle taking a big lead.
- 1:24:15Obviously, he was going to move on the first pitch.
- 1:24:17Sanford caught him leaning, made a quick snap throw to first, and Sepeda put the tag on him.
- 1:24:23The pitch to Maris, outside.
- 1:24:26One ball, one strike.
- 1:24:31Once again, the Giants are in the shift.
- 1:24:33They have three infielders on the right side.
- 1:24:42Sanford taking a little time as he looks in.
- 1:24:45Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:24:46Outside again.
- 1:24:47Just off the corner with a good fastball, ball two and strike one.
- 1:24:54I would imagine in this spot that Maris will be going to right field.
- 1:24:57The first two times he was going to left, but batting now with two outs and no one on,
- 1:25:01he has but one thing in mind.
- 1:25:02Let's just try to hit the ball out of the ballpark.
- 1:25:09Sanford ready.
- 1:25:10The two-one pitch.
- 1:25:11There's a tap down the first baseline.
- 1:25:13Sepeda picks it up, the race to the bag, Orlando wins it.
- 1:25:17No runs, no hits, no arrows, no one left.
- 1:25:19And the score at the end of the first half, the six winnings.
- 1:25:22The Yankees won, the Giants nothing.
- 1:25:24Back with more of baseball's greatest hits on 77 WABC in just a moment.
- 1:25:30This one's for you.

- 1:26:28Game 7 of 1962 featuring superstars Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris.
- 1:26:39Well, we go into the bottom of the sixth inning.
- 1:26:41The Yankees out in front of the Giants by a score of 1 to nothing here in the seventh game of the 1962 World Series.
- 1:26:49Boy, this is it.
- 1:26:50You play all season long and you come right down to one big ball game.
- 1:26:56And another capacity house here in Candlestick Park today watching this seventh game.
- 1:27:03The attendance exactly as it was yesterday, George, 43,948.
- 1:27:09They jammed everybody they could get in yesterday and they all come back today.
- 1:27:13And I'll tell you something, Joe, there's a lot of people downtown wanting to come.
- 1:27:17He deserves.
- 1:27:19Jimmy Davenport will lead off for the Giants.
- 1:27:24He'll be followed by Pagan and then Jack Sanford.
- 1:27:27Terry delivers.
- 1:27:28Strike.
- 1:27:29He got the fastball over around the knees.
- 1:27:33Davenport popped to the second baseman his first time at bat.
- 1:27:37Jimmy's a right-handed batter.
- 1:27:41There's the one strike pitch.
- 1:27:42A curve ball hit on the ground foul down the third baseline.
- 1:27:46Rolling to the bullpen right field, left field.
- 1:27:49A strike two count.
- 1:27:55Ralph Terry against Jack Sanford.
- 1:27:59Third meeting in this series for these two pitchers.
- 1:28:04There's the two strike pitch.
- 1:28:06Ball, he got it outside.
- 1:28:08One and two to Davenport.
- 1:28:10That pitch was close.
- 1:28:13Terry trying to get Davenport to swing at a bad one.
- 1:28:18Yankees play him straight away, not too deep.
- 1:28:23Ralph into the windup.
- 1:28:24There's the one-two pitch.
- 1:28:26High foul ball.
- 1:28:27This will be out of play.
- 1:28:29Coming over behind the Giant dugout.
- 1:28:32Still one ball, two strikes.
- 1:28:35The Yankees picked up a run in the fifth inning.
- 1:28:37That's been the only scoring in the ball game.
- 1:28:39They used two singles and a walk to load the bases.
- 1:28:42Then Kubek hit into a fast double play.
- 1:28:44Skowrin coming in with the run.
- 1:28:48Here's the pitch.
- 1:28:49Another foul ball.
- 1:28:50Almost the same spot.
- 1:28:53Still one ball, two strikes.
- 1:29:01Stan Landis, the umpire behind the plate, moving out.
- 1:29:04Throws the new ball out to Ralph Terry.
- 1:29:08Ralph gets ready.
- 1:29:09The pitch.
- 1:29:10Curve.
- 1:29:11It's way up high.
- 1:29:12That'll even the count at two and two.
- 1:29:16Jimmy Davenport, leadoff man for the Giants in the sixth inning.
- 1:29:21Jimmy with a 1.58 batting average.
- 1:29:24He's been to the plate 20 times in this series.
- 1:29:26He's had three hits.
- 1:29:29He's been a sterling performer at third base for the Giants.
- 1:29:34Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 1:29:38High pop fly outside of first.
- 1:29:41Skowrin is chasing it.
- 1:29:42This is going to be trouble.
- 1:29:43It is in the seats back in the first row.
- 1:29:46Skowrin and Bobby Richardson chasing it over near the barrier.
- 1:29:50Landed in the first row.
- 1:29:55Still two and two to Davenport.
- 1:29:58You remember Jimmy's first trip.
- 1:30:00He fouled off about eight or nine pitches.
- 1:30:02And he's right back at it again.
- 1:30:10Jimmy chokes the bat as he waits on Terry.
- 1:30:14There's the 2-2 pitch.
- 1:30:16Outside.
- 1:30:17Yelston Howard was ready to fire it down to third.
- 1:30:20He thought he had a call third strike.
- 1:30:22But Landis said it was off the corner.
- 1:30:24So it's three and two to Davenport.
- 1:30:32Ellie taking a little time.
- 1:30:34Walked out in front of the plate.
- 1:30:35Flipped the ball back to Terry.
- 1:30:43There's the 3-2 pitch.
- 1:30:45There's a high fly ball hit to left field.
- 1:30:48Trash going back.
- 1:30:49Now he is moving in shading his eyes from the sun.
- 1:30:52And he makes the catch.
- 1:30:54Jimmy Davenport.
- 1:30:56Out on a high fly ball to Tommy Trash in left field.
- 1:30:59That's one of those, George, that you talk about.
- 1:31:01The wind wasn't blowing to be out of here.
- 1:31:03Moose Garner was talking about wanting it yesterday.
- 1:31:05And Davenport hit that ball well.
- 1:31:07But right into that wind and forget about it.
- 1:31:09That's a tough spot that went out of here today.
- 1:31:12I tell you, Joe, this Ralph Terry knows what he's doing out there.
- 1:31:15He's taking advantage of this wind.
- 1:31:18Getting that fastball up around their letters.
- 1:31:20Hit it up in the air because it's going to be tough to hit one out of here today.
- 1:31:24Jose Pagan, the batter.
- 1:31:26He bounced to Boyer at third base his first time at bat.
- 1:31:31Jose, a right-handed batter.
- 1:31:334-12 batting average starting the series.
- 1:31:35Here's a high fly ball down the third baseline.
- 1:31:38This is curving over near the seats.
- 1:31:40Boyer chasing it, but it's going back in the crowd.
- 1:31:46You always look for those escape valves as far as outfields are concerned.
- 1:31:50For example, in the stadium, it's right center and left center.
- 1:31:53In the polo grounds, dead center field, make them hit that way.
- 1:31:55Here in this ballpark with this wind blowing the way it is today,
- 1:31:59it would be from the left field foul line all the way over to right center field.
- 1:32:03Because it is a tough one blowing in.
- 1:32:06If you can get that ball up and in to the right hand hitter, let him hit it that way.
- 1:32:11Ralph Terry looking in.
- 1:32:13Pagan waiting.
- 1:32:14Here's the pitch.
- 1:32:15It swings and pops it up outside of third.
- 1:32:17Boyer is chasing it.
- 1:32:18The wind is bringing it over near the seats.
- 1:32:20He's there and makes the catch.
- 1:32:22Boy, Elston Howard is right there with him too.
- 1:32:26Ellie has picked up some pointers, Joe, in this part.
- 1:32:28He goes all the way down as he knows the wind is bringing it back to home plate.
- 1:32:35Can't wait to see when that ball's going to land.
- 1:32:37You better take off.
- 1:32:38There's been many descriptions for this ballpark.
- 1:32:40Looper, dead of the braids, had a good one.
- 1:32:41He says that this is the only ballpark where you can sit in a dugout and read the morning paper as it blows by.
- 1:32:50Well, there's two down and the batter will be Jack Sanford, the pitcher.
- 1:32:54Jack fly to man on his first time at bat.
- 1:32:56He swings and lands it in the right center field.
- 1:32:58Man is chasing it.
- 1:32:59He can't get it.
- 1:33:01Sanford going to hold on with a single.
- 1:33:09Jack Sanford picked on the first pitch and he landed in the center field, a solid hit.
- 1:33:14And that's the first giant baserunner in this ballgame.
- 1:33:19Ralph Terry had retired 17 men in a row until the pitcher Jack Sanford broke the spell with a line single in the center field.
- 1:33:29And on a dry day, that ball might have skipped by a man all the way.
- 1:33:35The Giants have a runner at first base with two outs and the batter will be Philippe Allou.
- 1:33:42Philippe has fouled at first and fly to left in two trips.
- 1:33:47Takes a fastball down low.
- 1:33:49One ball and no strikes.
- 1:33:54A runner at first with two outs.
- 1:33:55We're in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:33:56The Yankees lead one to nothing.
- 1:34:00Boyer has just given up his first hit and the Giants have their first baserunner in the game.
- 1:34:06The pitch to Allou.
- 1:34:07A bouncing ball down the third baseline.
- 1:34:09Boyer will have to hurry to throw.
- 1:34:11He got him.
- 1:34:13A slow bounder to third.
- 1:34:14Boyer flipped it over to Scour.
- 1:34:16No runs on one hit.
- 1:34:17There were no arrows.
- 1:34:18One man left.
- 1:34:19And the score at the end of six, the Yankees won and the Giants nothing.
- 1:34:23We'll be back with more exciting action from the seventh game of the 1962 World Series after this.

- 1:36:38You're listening to Baseball's Greatest Hits.
- 1:36:40A special series rebroadcasting actual games from World Series of the Past.
- 1:36:44On 77 WABC, New York's Yankee Special.
- 1:36:47And now, more action from Game 7 of the 1962 World Series.
- 1:36:55Now we go into the seventh inning.
- 1:36:57The Yankees in front of the Giants, one to nothing.
- 1:37:00It'll be Elston Howard to lead off for New York.
- 1:37:02It'll be followed by Bill Scaron and then Fleet Boyer.
- 1:37:14Ellie's been to the plate twice.
- 1:37:15He bounced to the third baseman in the second inning and popped to the shortstop in the fourth inning.
- 1:37:20The only scoring in this ball game coming in the fifth inning.
- 1:37:24The Yankees loaded the bases with no one out on two singles and a walk.
- 1:37:28And Kubek bounced into a double play.
- 1:37:31The run coming across.
- 1:37:33One run, three hits and no errors for New York.
- 1:37:36No runs on one hit and no errors for the Giants.
- 1:37:44Sanford taking a little time.
- 1:37:45Jack was a base runner in the sixth inning.
- 1:37:47He was a little slow getting back to the mound.
- 1:37:50Here's the pitch.
- 1:37:51Ball, it's down low.
- 1:37:53One ball and no strikes.
- 1:37:55While you talk about the pressure on the ball games in the seventh game of the series,
- 1:37:59how about the umpires, especially the fellow behind the plate, Stan Landis?
- 1:38:04He's got a lot of important calls to make today.
- 1:38:08Here's a strike.
- 1:38:09Fast ball coming in around the knees.
- 1:38:13Like the old saying, George, when they do the great job, you hardly even know they're out there.
- 1:38:18We hardly recognize them because of the outstanding job that all of them have done.
- 1:38:22Here's the 1-1 pitch.
- 1:38:23A high pop fly down the right field line.
- 1:38:25This is curving back into the crowd.
- 1:38:28Sleepaloo chasing it.
- 1:38:29He had no chance to get it.
- 1:38:31One ball, two strikes.
- 1:38:34Cowards, Gowron and Boyer will be the Yankee batters here in the seventh inning.
- 1:38:38They lead the Giants 1-0.
- 1:38:47Sanford taking a look in to Tom Haller.
- 1:38:51Ellie choking the bat a little bit with two strikes.
- 1:38:53Here's the pitch.
- 1:38:54Ball, it's in tight.
- 1:38:56Fast ball coming in high and tight.
- 1:38:59A ball, two, and a strike, two count.
- 1:39:07Giants playing deep and around to the left for Elston Howard.
- 1:39:12Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 1:39:14Outside, he tried to get the corner with a slider.
- 1:39:17Three and two to Ellie.
- 1:39:19Moose Scowron is waiting in the on-deck circle.
- 1:39:25Yankees batting in the seventh inning.
- 1:39:27They lead 1-0.
- 1:39:29No one out, no one on.
- 1:39:31A full count to the catcher Howard.
- 1:39:34Here's the pitch.
- 1:39:35He swings and bounces it foul down the third baseline.
- 1:39:40Still three and two.
- 1:39:50Sanford with a new baseball, rubbing it up, taking a little time.
- 1:39:55Shaq has been a slow and deliberate pitcher here today in this all-important ball game.
- 1:40:00Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:01A ground foul right at the plate.
- 1:40:03Ball bounced up, hit Howard, and Haller grabbed it on the first hop.
- 1:40:08Still three and two.
- 1:40:10Howard talking to himself as he walks away from home plate.
- 1:40:13It looked like he had his pitch and just didn't hit it.
- 1:40:16It's one of the real joys of catching is listening to the conversation of these hitters
- 1:40:19when they talk to themselves.
- 1:40:20Hank Sauer, who is with this giant organization, one of the best, he'd talk and he'd answer himself
- 1:40:24and he'd always get on himself pretty good.
- 1:40:27Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:28A swing and a miss.
- 1:40:29He's stuck it out.
- 1:40:34Shaq Sanford coming in with a curve ball on the 3-2 pitch, and Elston Howard strikes out.
- 1:40:40That's one away, and the batter will be Bill Scott.
- 1:40:47Well, the Moose has had one hit in two trips today.
- 1:40:50Bounced to the shortstop in the second inning, singled in the fifth.
- 1:40:56Sanford ready.
- 1:40:57Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:58Here's a high fly ball hit into deep center field.
- 1:41:00Mays going back.
- 1:41:01Now he's going to have to come in in the left center, and McCovey is there finally to make the play.
- 1:41:06Willie Mays chased that one all over the outfield, and finally Willie McCovey in left center made the play.
- 1:41:14Tell you, George, I've seen some outfield play during the course of this year where at times you think you're watching an old Keystone Cop movie.
- 1:41:21One fellow will be ready to make the play, and zoom, somebody will cut in front of him and make it.
- 1:41:25And there you saw Willie ready to make it, and McCovey made it easily.
- 1:41:28Wind is a big factor here.
- 1:41:30McCovey act like he had it all the way, and Mays have been chasing it all over the outfield.
- 1:41:35Well, there's two down, and the batter will be Cleet Boyer.
- 1:41:38Cleet's one for two in this game.
- 1:41:41Takes a spike around the letters.
- 1:41:43Boyer has hit the ball hard both times.
- 1:41:45He lined to Alou in right field in the third inning.
- 1:41:48In the fifth inning, he lined a long single in the left center.
- 1:41:52On a dry day, it would have been an extra base hit and would have driven in a run.
- 1:41:57Here's a ground ball hit up the middle.
- 1:41:58Pagan can't get it.
- 1:41:59He goes into center field.
- 1:42:01Boyer getting his second hit.
- 1:42:03A ground ball through the middle to center field.
- 1:42:06Well, that's a big play for the Yankees, Joe.
- 1:42:09Get that pitcher up and out of there.
- 1:42:10Yes, sir, bringing that pitcher to the plate here instead of making him a leadoff man in the eighth inning.
- 1:42:17Now, we're waiting right now for Terry to come on.
- 1:42:20That's why an eighth spot is always such a tough one, George.
- 1:42:23You don't get that good ball ahead.
- 1:42:24If you have a fellow scoring position, you have to widen your strides on, try to drive it in.
- 1:42:28In a spot like this, you've got to go for the unexpected pitch to get that base hit,
- 1:42:32and hope you get your pitcher up there and not make a leadoff man out of him.
- 1:42:37Nice round of applause for Terry as he comes on.
- 1:42:39Boy, he's been quite a pitcher here today.
- 1:42:41He has allowed one hit, and that's been the only base runner for the Giants.
- 1:42:47Boyer at first base with two outs.
- 1:42:49The pitch to Terry.
- 1:42:50A path, one ball, no strikes.
- 1:42:53Ralph struck out in the third inning, and in the fifth inning, he drew a walk.
- 1:43:00Terry told me before the ball game today he had one big ambition, that's to get a hit in the series.
- 1:43:06Here's the pitch.
- 1:43:07A ground ball hit in the left field.
- 1:43:09There's his base hit just out of the reach of Davenport,
- 1:43:12and Ralph Terry comes through with a ground single to left.
- 1:43:17Saw the Yankees after the first two batters had been retired here in the seventh inning.
- 1:43:21A threatening, they have runners at first and second.
- 1:43:24Two outs, and the batter will be Tony Kubek.
- 1:43:27Let's hit number five for New York.
- 1:43:33Kubek's had one hit in three trips today, flying to center field in the first inning,
- 1:43:37single in the third, hit into a double play in the fifth.
- 1:43:40Both hand for the Giants, jumps up again.
- 1:43:42The left-hander is Billy O'Dell, and the right-hander, Don Larson.
- 1:43:48Two on, two outs.
- 1:43:53Samford taking a little time as he looks in.
- 1:43:59Here's the pitch to Kubek.
- 1:44:01A ball, it's up high, one ball and no strikes.
- 1:44:06Samford has been quite a pitcher here today.
- 1:44:08I'd say the only difference in this performance today and the other two
- 1:44:11that he's given in this World Series, he's been high today.
- 1:44:14He has not been able to get the ball down around the knees, as he would like to do.
- 1:44:21Here's the one-and-oh pitch.
- 1:44:22Here's a liner down the left field line.
- 1:44:24McCovey is chasing it.
- 1:44:25It's curving foul back into the crowd.
- 1:44:27Boy, Willie is playing him right over there on the line.
- 1:44:33One ball, one strike.
- 1:44:35Kubek will hit a lot of balls in the left field.
- 1:44:38I'll tell you another thing right here, Joe.
- 1:44:40It's going to be tough for Boyer to score on a base hit to the outfield
- 1:44:44unless he pulls it into right.
- 1:44:46Now, Mays and McCovey are both playing in close.
- 1:44:51Samford gets that.
- 1:44:53Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:44:54Here's a high-flab ball hitting the left center field.
- 1:44:57McCovey and Mays are both there.
- 1:44:58McCovey is calling part.
- 1:45:00He's got it besides your time.
- 1:45:02No runs on two hits.
- 1:45:03No arrows to that left.
- 1:45:05And the score at the end of the first half is 7-10.
- 1:45:08The Yankees won the Giants' nothing.
- 1:45:10Game 7 of the World Series of 1962 continues after this.
- 1:45:15Now listen, but listen quick, because it comes and goes just like that.
- 1:45:22The Pennzoil Chaparral, driven by national champion Johnny Rutherford.
- 1:45:27Here it comes again, all bright and brilliant in its traditional Pennzoil yellow color.
- 1:45:32That's a $40,000 engine that just roared by, turning out 9,500, tortuous RPM.
- 1:45:38Does it mile after mile after hard-running mile, race after race after race.
- 1:45:43The Pennzoil Chaparral.
- 1:45:45It has Pennzoil written on it and Pennzoil in it.
- 1:45:48Protection for a winner.
- 1:45:50Pennzoil Motor Oil.
- 1:45:52Protection for cars like the Chaparral and cars like yours.
- 1:45:55Ask for it.
- 1:45:56America has asked for Pennzoil since America learned to drive.
- 1:46:03Pennzoil, he asked for Motor Oil.
- 1:46:08Pennzoil.
- 1:46:11I'm Mel Allen, and you're listening to Baseball's Greatest Hits on 77 WABC,
- 1:46:17New York's radio station.
- 1:46:23Now we're going to the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 1:46:27The Giants trailing the Yankees by a score of 1 to nothing.
- 1:46:32It'll be Chuck Hiller to lead off for San Francisco.
- 1:46:36He'll be followed by Willie Mays and then Willie McCovey.
- 1:46:42The crowd's standing here for the seventh inning stretch and they are singing with the band that they're playing in deep center field.
- 1:46:49Probably the Giants' fight song.
- 1:46:53It's hard for us to pick it up here on the radio.
- 1:46:57Chuck Hiller at the bottom.
- 1:46:58He's 0 for 2 in the game.
- 1:47:00Here's the pitch.
- 1:47:01He bounce it up in the air.
- 1:47:02Terry spears it.
- 1:47:04A good play by Terry.
- 1:47:06Had the ball gotten over his head, more than likely, Hiller would have been on.
- 1:47:10Terry, moving back of the mound, reached up and speared the pop clap.
- 1:47:14Oh, there's one away and the batter is Willie Mays.
- 1:47:22Willie's 0 for 2.
- 1:47:23He's flied to left and flied to center in two trips.
- 1:47:36The Yankees deep and around to the left for Willie Mays.
- 1:47:41Terry delivers a curve ball.
- 1:47:42He lines it down the left field line.
- 1:47:44Trash racing into the corner.
- 1:47:46He's got it, a one-handed catch by Trash.
- 1:47:49He caught the ball, then went out of our sight back into the corner, but he hung onto it in the webbing of his glove.
- 1:47:55Willie Mays making a bid for an extra base hit into the corner in left field is robbed on a fine play by Tommy Trash.
- 1:48:05That's two down and the batter will be Willie McCovey.
- 1:48:10Boy, it's amazing how this kid, Tom Trash, has made the move from the infield to the outfield and he has not missed a step.
- 1:48:17He has taken it in stride.
- 1:48:20This was just one of the plays of this series right there.
- 1:48:25Willie McCovey, the batter.
- 1:48:26Willie has fouled to the catcher and flied to left in two trips.
- 1:48:30Here's the pitch.
- 1:48:31There's a long foul ball down the right field line.
- 1:48:35This one will go all the way out of the park.
- 1:48:39A one-strike count to Willie.
- 1:48:43Bill Stafford, a right-hander, and Bud Daley, a left-hander, throwing in the bullpen.
- 1:48:49Roger Ralph House wants to keep him ready.
- 1:48:55Terry gets ready.
- 1:48:56The pitch to McCovey.
- 1:48:58Ball down low.
- 1:48:59He checked his swing on a slow curve.
- 1:49:02One ball, one strike.
- 1:49:04The Giants are batting in the seventh inning.
- 1:49:06There's two outs with no one on.
- 1:49:07The Yankees lead one to nothing.
- 1:49:12Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:49:14He swings and hits a drive into deep center.
- 1:49:16The batter is chasing it in deep center.
- 1:49:18He can't get it all the way to the fifth.
- 1:49:20Here's McCovey going into second.
- 1:49:22He's going to try for three.
- 1:49:24Oh, he got him down.
- 1:49:26He's got it.
- 1:49:46Willie McCovey has just slammed one 410 feet away over Mickey Mantle's head into deep center field, and he has raced into third base with a stand-up triple.
- 1:49:57In fact, he made a big turn at third base as if he might come on in, but he was very wisely held up by Whitey Lockman.
- 1:50:07So the Giants have a tying run at third base with two outs, and the batter will be Orlando Cepeda.
- 1:50:15Elston Howard taking a little time right now as he goes out to the mound for a short conference with his pitcher.
- 1:50:22This ball hit by McCovey was on a line.
- 1:50:25It never did get very high.
- 1:50:28The wing had no chance to push it back.
- 1:50:34A runner at third with two outs.
- 1:50:37Terry Reddy. Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:39Cepeda takes a fastball up high.
- 1:50:41One ball and no strikes.
- 1:50:43Orlando struck out in the second, popped to Bobby Richardson in the fifth inning.
- 1:50:51Terry, taking a little time, looks in to get the sign.
- 1:50:56Here's the one-and-oh pitch.
- 1:50:58He swings and hits a high foul that'll be out of play down the right field line.
- 1:51:03One ball, one strike.
- 1:51:06The Yankees won. The Giants nothing. We're in the seventh inning.
- 1:51:10Willie McCovey is at third base with two outs.
- 1:51:14It's only the second hit given up by Ralph Terry.
- 1:51:19Jack Sanford, the pitcher, got the other one.
- 1:51:23Boy, this crowd has come alive, as you can hear.
- 1:51:26They are roaring, wanting Cepeda to come through.
- 1:51:29Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:51:31A swing and a miss on a bad curveball.
- 1:51:33He foul-tipped it, says Stan Landis, right into the myth.
- 1:51:37Terry, delivering a low outside curve, got Cepeda to bite.
- 1:51:43One ball, two strikes.
- 1:51:50Yankees straight away, everybody back on the infield.
- 1:51:54Here's the one-two pitch. Foul ball. This'll be out of play.
- 1:51:58Terry trying to get the fastball by him, evidently figuring that Cepeda would be looking for a curve.
- 1:52:05But Orlando had a riffle at it.
- 1:52:09Still one ball, two strikes. Once again, Howard going out to the mound for a conference with Terry.
- 1:52:20Kelly's going to take a little time right now as he stands on the mound talking to Ralph Terry.
- 1:52:27Action in the Yankee bullpen. Bill Stafford, a right-hander, and Bud Daley, a left-hander, throwing.
- 1:52:32Boy, this is it. There's no saving anybody for tomorrow or next week.
- 1:52:36This is the seventh ball game of the 62 World Series.
- 1:52:42Terry gets ready. Here's the one-two pitch.
- 1:52:45A swing and a miss. He's stuck him out. Cepeda going for a high fastball, strikes out.
- 1:52:50No runs on one hit. There were no errors. One man left.
- 1:52:54And the score at the end of seven, the Yankees won, the Giants nothing.
- 1:52:58Back with more action.
- 1:53:28The crowd at subway stations, the United Nations, the nightlife that can set your spirit free.
- 1:53:38JFK and Newark, the railroads when they tumor, as much a part of New York as W-A-B-C.

- 1:54:34The kids have all found as they hover around, bubblelicious is quite a sensation.

- 1:54:43The ultimate bubble has the ultimate flavors.
- 1:54:47Taste so with you, the bubble will whey. Bubblelicious.
- 1:54:54You're listening to Baseball's Greatest Hits, World Series Games of the Past on New York's Yankee Station.
- 1:55:00W-A-B-C, New York.
- 1:55:03I'm Mel Allen, and you're listening to Baseball's Greatest Hits on 77 W-A-B-C, New York's radio station.
- 1:55:15Well, at the end of seven, the Yankees have one run on five hits and they have no errors.
- 1:55:21The Giants have no runs on two hits and they have no errors.
- 1:55:26As Sanford gets ready to go here in the eighth inning, the Giant Bullpen comes alive again.
- 1:55:32Billy O'Dell, a left-hander, and Stu Miller, a right-hander, are throwing.
- 1:55:36They have been throwing along with Don Larson throughout the afternoon.
- 1:55:41Bobby Richardson will lead it off. Bobby has walked twice and fouled to the first baseman.
- 1:55:46So officially, he's 0-1 in this game.
- 1:55:52Sanford gets ready. Here's the pitch to Bobby. He swings and hits a high hopper to the shortstop.
- 1:55:57Pagan has it to throw to first. He is safe at first base.
- 1:56:01The throw is up high. It got away from Sepeda, and Bobby Richardson is safe at first.
- 1:56:08It'll be an error charged against the shortstop.
- 1:56:15So the Yankees have a runner at first base. There's no one out and the batter will be Tommy Trash.
- 1:56:25Sanford taking a little time as he goes over to talk to his third baseman, Davenport.
- 1:56:30Probably discussing the bunt situation that very definitely is in order here.
- 1:56:36The Yankees lead by one. We're in the eighth inning. Bobby Richardson at first base with no one out.
- 1:56:41And Whitey Ford is throwing in the bullpen for the Yankees. How about that?
- 1:56:46Whitey was the starting pitcher in yesterday's ball game. He's warming up today.
- 1:56:52Sanford gets set. Here's the pitch to Trash.
- 1:56:57Strike. He got the fastball over the outside corner. Tommy squared around. He was ready to bunt.
- 1:57:02Pull the bat back and Stan Landis went up with the right hand.
- 1:57:09Well, with Mantle and Maris coming up.
- 1:57:12Manager Ralph Halk wants to move Bobby Richardson down into scoring position.
- 1:57:17Sanford ready. Here's the pitch. Outside, Trash was ready to bunt. One ball, one strike.
- 1:57:28Davenport is playing in close at third. Jimmy's about five steps in front of the bag and moves in as Sanford delivers.
- 1:57:35Cepeda holding against the runner and he'll move in with the pitch.
- 1:57:40Tommy Trash batting left-handed waiting on Sanford. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:57:46He bunts at his foul. This one is rolling behind the plate. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:57:51Tommy is trying to get the bunt down the first base line as Davenport is racing in from third.
- 1:57:56It would almost be suicide to bunt the ball to him. Fouls it back.
- 1:58:04One ball and two strikes. Sanford working slowly here in the eighth inning.
- 1:58:13Yankees with a one-run lead have a runner at first base, no one out. Here's the pitch.
- 1:58:17Outside, Trash checked his swing just in time on a fastball that was off the corner.
- 1:58:23That'll even the count at two and two.
- 1:58:30Mickey Mantle is waiting in the on-deck circle.
- 1:58:35Sanford checks his runner. The pitch. Outside again. Once again, Jack trying to thread the needle on the outside corner is missed.
- 1:58:43So it's three and two to Trash. Well, we'll watch the runner. He might be moving on his three-two pitch.
- 1:58:51Sanford has picked a runner off first base today, so Bobby Richardson, of course, is going to be mighty careful getting a lead.
- 1:59:01Sanford gets set, makes a quick throw to first. Bobby back in time.
- 1:59:07It's a foul count to Tommy Trash. A runner at first base, no one out.
- 1:59:12Here's the pitch. There goes the runner. Here's a liner. One hop to the shortstop. He gets away from him.
- 1:59:17Here's a throw to first. He's safe at first base. Trash hit that one like a bullet. A low liner that hit right in front of Pagan.
- 1:59:25Bounced out of his glove over toward second base. He picked it up, made the throw to first, but it was not in time to get Trash.
- 1:59:32It'll be an infield single for Tommy.
- 1:59:36He's hit number six for the Yankees, puts runners at first and second with no one out.
- 1:59:41And the batter will be Mickey Mantle.
- 1:59:43Well, there's the value of moving on the 3-2 pitch. Had Richardson not been moving, he would have been an easy out at second base.
- 1:59:51But Pagan, realizing he had no chance to get Bobby, hurried his throw to first base, but it was too late to get Trash.
- 1:59:58So, two on, no one out, and Mickey Mantle the batter. Mickey's 0 for 2 in this game. He walked his last time.
- 2:00:08Sanford gets set. Here's the pitch to Mantle. Ball in tight. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:00:14Well, Davenport is playing in close at third. Jimmy's ready for the bunt in case Mickey bunts.
- 2:00:19Sepeda, Hiller, and Pagan are playing about halfway. They are not looking for the bunt.
- 2:00:25In fact, Sepeda is deeper than anybody else on the infield.
- 2:00:32Sanford checks his runners. Here's the 1-0 pitch. A swing and a foul. This one back into the crowd.
- 2:00:39One ball, one strike.
- 2:00:45The good thing about having a batter like Mantle at the plate in a bunt situation, you don't have to worry too much about a double play ball,
- 2:00:52as Mickey has such tremendous speed, that doesn't mean he cannot hit into a double play, but the chances are against it.
- 2:00:59So instead of a bunt play, as in this situation, manager Ralph Halk can let Mickey swing away,
- 2:01:05figuring that he'll still move at least one runner up.
- 2:01:09Here's the 1-1 pitch. Outside, ball 2 and strike 1.
- 2:01:16Billy O'Dell, a left-hander, is still throwing in the bullpen, and Don Larson has replaced Stu Miller for the Giants.
- 2:01:22So it's Larson and O'Dell, a right-hander and a left-hander.
- 2:01:28Mickey Mantle right down on the end of the bat, waiting on Jack Sanford.
- 2:01:32There's two on with no one out here in the eighth inning.
- 2:01:35The Yankees lead the Giants by a score of 1-0. They've out-hit the Giants 6-2.
- 2:01:43Bobby Richardson is down at second base. Tommy Trash at first base.
- 2:01:48Sanford gets ready. Here's the 2-1 pitch. A swing and a miss. Low curve ball around the knees, and Mantle had a ripple out of it.
- 2:01:57A ball 2 and a strike 2 count. Roger Maris is waiting in the on-deck circle.
- 2:02:10Sanford taking a lot of time. Looks in to Tom Haller to get the sign.
- 2:02:16Looks back to second to check his runner. Here's the pitch.
- 2:02:20Down low, we get the curve in the dirt. Nice pick-up by Haller, who went down on both knees to block it.
- 2:02:25It's always 3-2 to Mantle. Will the runners be moving on this 3-2 pitch? We'll wait and see.
- 2:02:34It paid off for Ralph Halk when he had Richardson running on a 3-2 pitch to Trash.
- 2:02:41Oh, we'll check him again.
- 2:02:47Sanford checking the sign. Shaking his head yes to Tom Haller.
- 2:02:53Here's the 3-2 pitch. Here's a line at the right field. It's in there.
- 2:02:57Bobby Richardson coming to third, but he's going to be held up.
- 2:03:02Mickey Mantle lined the ball just out of the reach of the second baseman, Hiller.
- 2:03:06Now Bobby Richardson had started back to second. He thought Hiller might catch the ball, so he was held up at third.
- 2:03:13So the bases are loaded with no one out, and here's Al Dark coming out.
- 2:03:18We might get a pitching change here. I believe we are. He is giving the call to the bullpen, and it's going to be Billy O'Dell.
- 2:03:29Now here's a big round of applause here at Candlestick Park in San Francisco as Jack Sanford leaves the mound.
- 2:03:36And he has been a tremendous pitcher for the San Francisco Giants this year, not only here in the World Series, but throughout the season.
- 2:03:44And they're giving him a standing applause as he leaves the mound.
- 2:03:49The Yankees have loaded the bases here in the eighth inning with no one out.
- 2:03:53An error and two singles have filled the sacks, and Billy O'Dell, a left-hander, will be coming on to pitch to Roger Maris.
- 2:04:04This will be O'Dell's third appearance in the World Series. He started the first ball game. He has a record of no wins and one defeat.
- 2:04:11He's with a loss in the first game. He's pitched 10 and one-third innings, giving up 12 hits.
- 2:04:16Six runs have all been earned. He's walked three and struck out eight.
- 2:04:22Billy pitched in relief in the fourth game of the series and saved that ball game.
- 2:04:27Don Larson was the winning pitcher.
- 2:04:30So Billy completes his warm-up tosses. Roger Maris steps in.
- 2:04:35The bases are loaded with no one out. The Yankees leading one to nothing.
- 2:04:39The hit by Mantle was number seven off Sanford. The Yankees have out-hit the Giants, seven to two.
- 2:04:47Al Gart doesn't want to give up another run. He is playing his infield in close with the bases loaded and no one out.
- 2:04:56Maris is 0-3 in this game. Here's the first pitch. Strike. He got a fast ball of it.
- 2:05:04One strike to the rods. They line to third, bounce to third, and bounce to the first baseman.
- 2:05:14Richardson, Trash, and Mantle are the Yankee baserunners.
- 2:05:19Odell, ready? Here's the pitch. A ground ball hit to the second baseman.
- 2:05:24Hiller is coming to the plate with it. He's out. Back to first. He's safe on a close play.
- 2:05:28Almost a double play. Maris hit the ball at Chuck Hiller, who fired it into Howard.
- 2:05:34He stepped on the plate and fired it right back to Sepeda at first. Maris beat the relay.
- 2:05:42So Raj is safe on the fielder's choice. The bases are still loaded. One out.
- 2:05:47And Elston Howard will be the batter. Al Gart has raced out of the dugout.
- 2:05:54He has a right-hander throwing in the bullpen, but there'll be no pitching change.
- 2:05:59He's going along with Billy Odell, a left-hander, against the right-hander hitting Elston Howard.
- 2:06:12Ellie's 0-3 in this game. Bounce to third, popped to short, and struck out.
- 2:06:20Odell gets ready. Here's the pitch to Howard. Strike. Pass ball over the outside corner.
- 2:06:27The Giants trying to get out of a jam here in the eighth inning.
- 2:06:31The Yankees have the bases loaded with one out.
- 2:06:38Odell into the windup. Here's the pitch. High foul ball.
- 2:06:42This will be out of play coming back into the lower deck.
- 2:06:45Strike two. Billy coming on with the bases loaded and no one out.
- 2:06:51Got Roger Maris to bounce to the second baseman.
- 2:06:54Force out at the plate. Now it's a strike two count to Elston Howard.
- 2:07:03Odell checking the sign. Here's the two-strike pitch.
- 2:07:07Here's a ground ball. A third might be a double play. Steps on the bag to throw. He's down.
- 2:07:16Elston Howard into a fast double play.
- 2:07:19Davenport steps on the bag and through to first base.
- 2:07:24No runs on two hits. One error, two men left.
- 2:07:27And the Snorky into the first half of the eighth inning. The Yankees won. The Giants nothing.

- 2:08:31Game seven of 1962 featuring superstars Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Mickey Mantle, and Roger Maris.
- 2:08:45Billy O'Dell coming on in relief with the bases loaded and no one out. Turned in a sparkling job. Got out of it without a run.
- 2:08:53So it's still a one to nothing ball game. The Yankees leading as we go into the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:09:01Tom Heller will be the leadoff man. He'll be followed by Jimmy Davenport, then Jose Pagan.
- 2:09:12Ralph Terry taking a little extra time as he goes through his warm up tosses. Action in the Yankee bullpen.
- 2:09:19Bud Daley a left hander and Bill Stafford a right handed. They have been throwing off and on throughout the ball game.
- 2:09:30One to nothing. The Yankees lead. We're in the bottom of the eighth inning of the seventh game of the 1962 World Series.
- 2:09:38Tom Heller has popped a shark and bounced to the pitcher in two trips.
- 2:09:44Here's Terry's first pitch. Here's a fly ball in the left center field. Trash is racing in. He's there and he makes the catch.
- 2:09:51Tom Heller goes out on the first pitch to Trash in left center.
- 2:09:57That's one away and the batter will be Jimmy Davenport.
- 2:10:00Jimmy just made a fine play on a hard hit ground ball off the bat of Elston Howard.
- 2:10:06Stepped on third base, flipped at the first, turning it into a fast double play.
- 2:10:14Jimmy has popped a second and flied to left in two trips today.
- 2:10:24Terry taking a little time.
- 2:10:27Tricks the sign, here's the pitch. Ball, it's down low. One ball and it has strength.
- 2:10:35The Yankees picked up a run in the fifth inning. That's been the only scoring in the game.
- 2:10:40Here's the one and O pitch. High pop fly on the infield. Here's Boyer coming into foul ground calling for it.
- 2:10:47He's there and makes the catch. Jimmy Davenport fouls to the third baseman.
- 2:10:52Well, there's two down. And Jose Pagan is scheduled to be the batter, but we're going to get a pinch batter.
- 2:10:59I believe it's Ed Bailey. We'll check it to be sure.
- 2:11:03Ed Bailey, left-handed hitting catcher, is coming on.
- 2:11:08Here's the announcement coming over the public address system.
- 2:11:17So Al Dark trailing by a one run here in the eighth inning, sending up a left-handed batter for his shortstop Pagan.
- 2:11:27Giants batting with two outs and no one on.
- 2:11:35Ed taking a little time before he gets in.
- 2:11:41Terry just waiting for Bailey to get set.
- 2:11:45Gets the sign. Here's the first pitch. Curve ball, he got it over. One strike. Ralph pulled the string on him.
- 2:11:56The Yankees are deep and around to the right for Bailey.
- 2:12:00Ed is strictly a pull hitter.
- 2:12:05He's out of the box for just a moment, gets back in.
- 2:12:09Bobby Richardson right on the edge of the outfield grass.
- 2:12:14Here's the one strike pitch. He checked his swing on a low curve, says Stan Lambas. One ball, one strike.
- 2:12:24The Yankees have one run on seven hits and no errors. The Giants have no runs on two hits. They've committed one error.
- 2:12:35Terry still looking in. Pounds the ball in his glove.
- 2:12:39Here's the one-one pitch. A foul ball. It's back on the screen.
- 2:12:43Terry coming in with a fastball around the letters. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:12:51Terry retired the first 17 batters he faced here today before Sanford singled with two outs in the sixth inning.
- 2:12:58And he gave up a triple to McCovey with two outs in the seventh inning. It's been the only two Giants hits.
- 2:13:07One ball and two strikes to Bailey. Here's the pitch. Down low.
- 2:13:12That'll even the count at two and two. Terry trying to get Bailey to go for a bad pitch.
- 2:13:24Ed Bailey batting for Jose Pagan here in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and no one on.
- 2:13:34Ed getting out just as Terry got ready. Now we're ready again.
- 2:13:38Here's the two-two pitch. Foul ball. This one back in the crowd. Still two and two.
- 2:13:47In the fifth inning, the Yankees used two singles and a walk to load the bases.
- 2:13:52Then Kubek bounced to the shortstop Pagan who made the double play.
- 2:13:56Skowron coming in to score the only run of this ballgame.
- 2:14:01Yankees had the bases loaded in the eighth inning with no one out, but they failed to score.
- 2:14:07Here's the two-two pitch. There's a fly ball hit outside of first base.
- 2:14:11Skowron is coming over. He's got the room on it still. Chasing it, he makes the catch.
- 2:14:15Ed Bailey fouls to the first baseman. No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left.
- 2:14:20And the score at the end of eight, the Yankees won, the Giants nothing.
- 2:14:24We'll be back with more exciting action from the seventh game of the 1962 World Series after this.

- 2:15:00for a taste as rich as its name.
- 2:15:02Gats sucks, tastes like a hundred thousand bucks. Nestle $100,000 bar.
- 2:15:0877 WABC with baseball's greatest hits, special rebroadcasts of actual World Series games of the past.
- 2:15:16And now, more action from game seven of the 1962 World Series.
- 2:15:22Well, it's the ninth inning here at Candlestick Park, and the Yankees are leading by a score of one to nothing.
- 2:15:33Boy, you couldn't ask for a finer ball game in the final game of a World Series.
- 2:15:38Bill Scouran will lead off for the Yankees.
- 2:15:41He'll be followed by Boyer and then Terry.
- 2:15:44Here's a fastball up high. One ball, enough strikes.
- 2:15:48Billy O'Dell pitching in relief of Jack Sanford, who turned in another great performance here today in his third World Series start.
- 2:15:57The pitch in the dirt, scooped up by Heller.
- 2:16:01A ball, two, and a no-strike count.
- 2:16:04O'Dell came on in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and no one out.
- 2:16:09He got embarrassed on a ground ball to the second baseman.
- 2:16:11The play was made at the plate, and then Howard hit into a fast double play.
- 2:16:19Here's the two and O pitch to Scouran. He swings and fouls it off.
- 2:16:23That's one sailing back into the upper deck behind the giant dugout.
- 2:16:27That's a ball, two, and a strike one count.
- 2:16:38Billy O'Dell didn't like the baseball. He wants a new one.
- 2:16:44Tosses it in, Stan Landis sends a new one out to the mound.
- 2:16:51Moose is waiting. Here's the two-one pitch.
- 2:16:53Down low at the fastball, low and in. Three and one to Scouran.
- 2:17:05O'Dell taking a little time as he looks into Heller.
- 2:17:08Here's the three-one pitch. He swings and hits a long fly ball down the left field line.
- 2:17:13It's curving foul and going back into the crowd.
- 2:17:17So it's three and two to Scouran. Lead-off man for the Yankees in the ninth inning.
- 2:17:22They lead the Giants one to nothing here in the seventh game.
- 2:17:26Boy, this is it, right down to the wire.
- 2:17:34The new shortstop for the Giants here in the ninth inning is Ernie Bowman.
- 2:17:38Pagan went out for the pinch batter, Ed Bailey, and Ernie Bowman has gone in to play shortstop.
- 2:17:49O'Dell taking a lot of time here on the three-two pitch.
- 2:17:52Ready? Here it is. A ground ball hit to the shortstop.
- 2:17:55Bowman has it. Here's the throw to first. He's out.
- 2:17:59Phil Scouran goes out short to first.
- 2:18:04That's one away and the batter will be Cletus Boyer.
- 2:18:08Cletus two for three in this game. He lined a right field in the third inning.
- 2:18:12Singled in the fifth and again in the seventh.
- 2:18:15His single in the fifth inning was a key blow that sent Scouran all the way to third where he scored on the double play ball.
- 2:18:29Top of the ninth is one out with no one on.
- 2:18:33The Yankees won. The Giants nothing.
- 2:18:35The pitch to Boyer's hit hard to third. Davenport knocks it down.
- 2:18:38Here's the throw to first. He's out.
- 2:18:42Another good play by Jimmy Davenport as Boyer sent a screamer down the third baseline.
- 2:18:48Jimmy blocked it. Ball rolled out in front of him. He picked it up, made the throw to Cepeda.
- 2:18:53That's two down and here's Ralph Terry.
- 2:19:03Well, this highly partisan crowd here in Candlestick Park giving a roaring salute to Ralph Terry as he comes on to bat.
- 2:19:11Here on the top of the ninth. Ralph has been a tremendous pitcher for the Yankees.
- 2:19:18He's had one hit in the ball game. O'Dell delivers. He fouls it back. One strike.
- 2:19:26Ralph is struck out, blocked and singled. He's one for two.
- 2:19:32Right handed batter. Facing the left hander Billy O'Dell.
- 2:19:35The pitch. He swings and misses on a curve. Strike two.
- 2:19:41Two outs with no one on. We're in the top of the ninth inning. The Yankees lead by one.
- 2:19:50Here's the two strike pitch. A swing and a miss. He's struck him out. Terry strikes out.
- 2:19:55No runs, no hits, no errors, no one left. And the score at the end of the first half of the ninth inning.
- 2:20:01The Yankees won. The Giants nothing.
- 2:20:03We'll be back with more exciting action from the seventh game of the 1962 World Series after this.
- 2:20:33Oh
- 2:20:35Oh
- 2:20:56Oh
- 2:20:58Oh
- 2:21:04Anheuser-Busch St. Louis. And now more action from game seven of the 1962 World Series.
- 2:21:15Well it's the bottom of the ninth inning and this is it. The Giants are trailing the Yankees by a score of one to nothing.
- 2:21:23Mattie Allou has moved out of the dugout. He'll be batting for Billy O'Dell.
- 2:21:29Mattie Allou, a left handed batter, will be batting for Billy O'Dell leading off to the Giants here in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:21:38He'll be followed by his brother, Philippe Allou, and then the second baseman, Chuck Hiller.
- 2:21:44Oh
- 2:21:50Ralph Terry completes his warm up tosses. Howard goes down the second.
- 2:21:55And everybody moves forward on the edge of their seats for this bottom of the ninth inning with the Yankees leading one to nothing.
- 2:22:03Mattie Allou, a little left handed batter leading off. There's action in both bullpens. Billy Pierce throwing in the bullpen for the Giants.
- 2:22:16Bill Stafford and Bud Daley for the Yankees.
- 2:22:22Terry taking a little time. He wants to be sure his defensive alignment is where he wants him to play Allou.
- 2:22:30Here's the pitch to Mattie. Ball, it's outside. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:22:39A one to nothing ball game right down to the wire here in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:22:46Here's the one and O pitch. A high pop fly outside of first base. This may blow into the seats. Howard is chasing it near the dugout.
- 2:22:54He can't make a play. He went right into the giant dugout.
- 2:22:58Else than Howard, Boy was staying with it. He went right into the giant dugout all the way.
- 2:23:04But he couldn't quite make the play so it's one ball and one strike to Allou.
- 2:23:09That ball at one time was near the foul line but the strong breeze blowing kept carrying it away from Howard and just out of his reach.
- 2:23:19Boyer at third base is playing it on the grass. Everybody else back on the infield.
- 2:23:27Here's the one one pitch. Curve ball, it's too low. A ball two and a strike one count.
- 2:23:36Mattie Allou in a pinch hitting role in game number four at a key double down the left field line.
- 2:23:44Boyer of course has to play him in close. He's one of the fastest baserunners in this series.
- 2:23:49Here's the pitch. He backs down the first baseline. Terry chasing it. He can't get it.
- 2:23:54He can't get it.
- 2:24:12Mattie Allou dragging a butt just past Ralph Terry and he beats it out for an infield single.
- 2:24:19That's hit number three for the Giants. What's a tying run at first base with no one out and the batter will be Philippe Allou.
- 2:24:32The Yankees are looking for the bunt. Boyer moving in close at third base.
- 2:24:36Here's the pitch. He bumps it up in the air. Howard chasing it. He can't get it.
- 2:24:41One strike to Philippe. Giants of course trying to move this tying run down to second base.
- 2:24:49They have Giller and Willie Mays coming up.
- 2:24:55It's a one to nothing ball game here in the ninth. The Yankees leading.
- 2:25:01Allou at first base. No one out. That's Mattie Allou at first base. Philippe Allou the batter with a one strike count.
- 2:25:11There's a token toss over to first base. Terry just reminding Allou that he's keeping an eye on him.
- 2:25:21Ralph gets set. Here's the pitch. He swings and fouls it back. Allou had a riffle at a high fastball.
- 2:25:28He was trying to drill that one by Boyer at third base. Fouled it back on the screen.
- 2:25:33So Terry is out in front with a strike two count.
- 2:25:39And Elston Howard calls time. Race is out to the mound for a conversation with Terry.
- 2:25:46Bill Stafford a right hander and Bud Daley a left hander throwing in the bullpen.
- 2:25:58Howard coming back behind the plate. Terry gets set. Here's the pitch. A swing and a miss. He struck him out.
- 2:26:05Philippe Allou goes down swinging. That's one away and the batter will be Chuck Hiller.
- 2:26:15Hiller is 0 for 3. He's bounced to first flying to center.
- 2:26:20And he popped to the pitcher trying to beat out a bun in the seventh inning.
- 2:26:26Well the Giants have one of their fastest baserunners if not their fastest at first base.
- 2:26:31He's carrying the tying run. One out here in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:26:36Boy you can almost feel the tension all the way here to the radio booth.
- 2:26:41A pitch to Hiller. He swings and pops it up. It's going to be out of play. This one is drifting back into the crowd.
- 2:26:48One strike to Chuck.
- 2:26:55Ralph Terry all the way for the Yankees. Jack Sanford the starting pitcher for the Giants today.
- 2:27:01Billy O'Dell relieved him in the eighth inning.
- 2:27:08It's a one strike count to Chuck Hiller. Mattie Allou at first base. One out. Bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:27:14Mattie taking a big lead at first. Terry chucks him. Here's the pitch. He bunts down the third baseline. It's foul.
- 2:27:23Boy there was a dandy.
- 2:27:26Hiller pushed a bunt down the third baseline. It just rolled outside the line. Boy you had no chance to get him.
- 2:27:33The plate was playing in close but this was a perfect bunt. So it's a strike two count to Hiller.
- 2:27:40Once again Howard out to the mound for a conference with Terry.
- 2:27:46Everything riding here in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:27:55Howard coming back behind the plate.
- 2:27:59Terry chucks his runner at first. The pitch. Foul ball back in the crowd.
- 2:28:04Ralph trying to get the fastball by him around the letter. Hiller fouled it back.
- 2:28:09Billy Pierce is throwing in the bullpen for the Giants.
- 2:28:14They tie it up for go ahead. More than likely he'll be the pitcher.
- 2:28:21Terry gets set. Here's the pitch.
- 2:28:24Here's another foul ball coming back to the crowd.
- 2:28:30A strike two count to Chuck Hiller.
- 2:28:33The amazing thing about these pitches to Hiller with two strikes on him.
- 2:28:37Terry has come right in there with good fastballs. He is not trying to make Hiller go for a bad pitch.
- 2:28:43He tried to overpower him with two good fastballs.
- 2:28:47The amazing thing that Chuck had to be expecting most anything in this spot.
- 2:28:55Ralph taking the look in.
- 2:28:59Chucks the runner at first base. Here's the pitch. Foul ball.
- 2:29:03This one off to the left rolling to the Yankee dugout.
- 2:29:07You know the most helpless people in the ballpark in a situation like this are the ball players sitting in the dugout.
- 2:29:13Nothing they can do. Nothing at all but just wait and hope.
- 2:29:17Those on the field or with a bat in their hand they have a chance. They can do something.
- 2:29:25Chuck Hiller choking the bat waiting. Here's the pitch.
- 2:29:29In the dirt. Nice pick up by Howard. That was a big play.
- 2:29:33Giants would like to move a Lue down to second base.
- 2:29:37Ball one strike two count to Chuck Hiller.
- 2:29:45Maddie a Lue open this inning with a bunt single down the first base line. Maddie was batting for Billy O'Dell.
- 2:29:51Felipe Lue after bunting and missing a pitch.
- 2:29:55Swung at the next two and struck out.
- 2:29:58Now Chuck Hiller the batter. One ball two strikes.
- 2:30:01Terry delivers. A swing and a miss.
- 2:30:04He struck him out. Hiller goes down swinging on a low curve ball.
- 2:30:08So there's two down and it's all up to Willie Mays.
- 2:30:11And I would imagine if the Giants fans had their way in the ball club.
- 2:30:15This is the man they'd want at the plate.
- 2:30:18A runner at first base. Two outs.
- 2:30:21And Willie Mays the batter. He has been the big man for this ball club.
- 2:30:26Not only this year but for twelve long years.
- 2:30:31So it'll be Terry against Mays.
- 2:30:34And that is matching strength against strength here in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- 2:30:39Willie has flied to left, flied to center and lined deep to left.
- 2:30:43Trash made a great play on him in the seventh inning to rob him of an extra base hit.
- 2:30:49Willie right down on the end of the bat. The pitch.
- 2:30:52Ball. It's inside. Fast ball.
- 2:30:56One and O to Willie May.
- 2:31:00Mattie Allou at first base with two outs.
- 2:31:04Boy, everybody has moved forward on the edge of their seats.
- 2:31:08Here's the pitch. Fast ball in tight.
- 2:31:11Almost hit him with this one.
- 2:31:13A ball two and a no strike count.
- 2:31:21Terry coming in with two good fast balls trying to hit Willie on the fist.
- 2:31:26Got him in a little bit too close.
- 2:31:29The Yankees deep around to the left and very deep in the outfield.
- 2:31:34Boy, you're deep in near the line at third base.
- 2:31:37A pitch to Willie Mays. He swings and lines it down the right field line.
- 2:31:41That's what is in there.
- 2:31:43Willie's on his way to second.
- 2:31:45The runner's going to be held at third base.
- 2:31:52Willie Mays lined wide into the corner in right field.
- 2:31:56Mattie Allou was held up at the last moment.
- 2:31:59It looked like he was going to make a try for it.
- 2:32:02Bobby Richardson took the relay from Roger Maris and rifled a throw into Elston Howard.
- 2:32:07One hop. He would have had him at the plate.
- 2:32:10And Whitey Lockman very wisely held him up.
- 2:32:13So the Giants have runners at second and third with two outs.
- 2:32:17Willie McCovey the batter and here's Ralph Hout coming out to the mound.
- 2:32:25George Kell and Joe Garagiola at Candlestick Park in San Francisco.
- 2:32:29And this place is a madhouse right now.
- 2:32:32The Yankees lead one to nothing, the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:32:35The Giants have runners at second and third with two outs and Willie McCovey is the batter.
- 2:32:40Willie's had one hit. That was a long triple.
- 2:32:42Here's the pitch. He swings and sends a long belt to right field.
- 2:32:46Maris is chasing it and is curving foul. It's going in the seats.
- 2:32:52Willie McCovey making a bid, slammed one deep in the right.
- 2:32:57The ball did not have the distance to get out of the ballpark.
- 2:33:00Maris going over near the line but it curved back into the crowd.
- 2:33:07So it's one strike to Willie.
- 2:33:09And boy everything is riding on every pitch here in the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:33:17Willie McCovey fouled to the catcher, flied to left and tripled into deep center field.
- 2:33:24Big tall left handed batter right down on the end of the bat.
- 2:33:32Ralph Terry gets set.
- 2:33:34Here's the pitch to Willie.
- 2:33:35Here's a liner straight for Richardson. The ball game is over and the World Series is over.
- 2:33:40Willie McCovey hit it like a bullet.
- 2:33:43A line drive right straight to Bobby Richardson at second base.
- 2:33:47Had that ball got out of his reach, the Giants would have been the winner.
- 2:33:51Now it's the Yankees who have mobbed Ralph Terry in the center of the diamond and well they should.
- 2:33:56What a pitcher Ralph Terry was here today.
- 2:33:59He pitched a four hit shutout going right down to the bottom of the ninth.
- 2:34:04A line drive off the bat of Willie McCovey going straight into the glove of Bobby Richardson at second base.
