Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, he Jay.
- 0:00Speaker 2: It's pretty crazy that yesterday Kevin Durant was fielding questions
- 0:04Speaker 2: about Victor Webbin Yama becoming the next face of the NBA.
- 0:08Speaker 2: And while that's still very well could happen, we are
- 0:10Speaker 2: now talking about Wemby likely missing the rest of the season.
- 0:14Speaker 2: It's yet another shock to the Spurs system. Number three
- 0:17Speaker 2: and a half months ago, Greg Popovich suffered a stroke.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Today we learned that Wemby is expected to be out
- 0:24Speaker 2: for the year after being diagnosed with a blood clot
- 0:26Speaker 2: in his right shoulder. I was told that Wemby felt
- 0:29Speaker 2: off during All Star weekend, but the official diagnosis came
- 0:33Speaker 2: following the weekend when he was on vacation. Now we're
- 0:37Speaker 2: talking about him missing the entire rest of the season.
- 0:40Speaker 2: This afternoon, Chris Paul said that it has been a
- 0:43Speaker 2: very difficult stretch for the Spurs organization.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Man, it's been extremely tough, tell you to say the least,
- 0:51Speaker 3: you know, especially with this organization and how they put
- 0:55Speaker 3: everything into perspective.
- 0:56Speaker 1: You know, so.
- 0:58Speaker 3: Obviously to pop situation and knowing what he means to
- 1:01Speaker 3: leave VIC and you know, him playing his first All
- 1:05Speaker 3: Star game. I think for us, you know, we know
- 1:09Speaker 3: we got a job to do, but just like anybody,
- 1:12Speaker 3: we worry about our people.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Chris talked a lot about the Spurs family today and
- 1:17Speaker 2: how somehow, some way, with situations like this, families find
- 1:22Speaker 2: a way to get closer. Now, there is optimism today
- 1:25Speaker 2: with all of this doom and gloom, that the Spurs
- 1:28Speaker 2: believe that this is an isolated incident with Victor Wembin Yama.
- 1:32Speaker 2: There is no concern for his long term health or
- 1:35Speaker 2: his basketball activities. The treatment for Wenby whatever action the
- 1:40Speaker 2: Spurs do take, they are hoping to keep that news
- 1:43Speaker 2: private due to the sensitive nature of his health. With
- 1:46Speaker 2: all that said, Wemby, according to Spurs officials, is expected
- 1:50Speaker 2: to make a full return to the court and be
- 1:52Speaker 2: ready to go at the start of next season. However,
- 1:54Speaker 2: to add insult to injury with missing the final thirty
- 1:57Speaker 2: games of the season, that will take Webben. I'm out
- 2:00Speaker 2: of contention for any postseason awards, including Defensive Player of
- 2:05Speaker 2: the Year, which guys, he was the overwhelming favorite to.
- 2:08Speaker 4: Win, Absolutely no doubt about that. Jared, thank you very
- 2:12Speaker 4: much for the reporting appreciation, you man. You hate to
- 2:16Speaker 4: hear this. We go to Carmacks and never settle and
- 2:18Speaker 4: you take a look at what the Spurs have done
- 2:20Speaker 4: with him without Victor wembin Yama in the lineup. They
- 2:24Speaker 4: go into this game twenty three and twenty nine. Had
- 2:26Speaker 4: all these thoughts about hey making a little push here
- 2:29Speaker 4: after the All Star break, maybe get into the play
- 2:31Speaker 4: in chance to get in the postseason. But there are
- 2:35Speaker 4: the numbers with him on the floor and off the floor.
- 2:38Speaker 4: But you just hate to hear that for this guy
- 2:41Speaker 4: who is who loves the game so much, who has
- 2:44Speaker 4: made such an impact so early. Just and and I
- 2:48Speaker 4: think to All Star weekend. I was on the Technology
- 2:51Speaker 4: Summit panel. He was on my panel, got a chance,
- 2:53Speaker 4: had talked to him there, met his dad that day,
- 2:56Speaker 4: I mean, and then all of a sudden this happens.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Well at number one, number one. Just wish him good
- 3:02Speaker 5: health and I'm not going to try to play a
- 3:04Speaker 5: doctor on television. That's got to be scary when you
- 3:07Speaker 5: get that news. Got a chance to see his mom
- 3:09Speaker 5: at the All Star Game. But I feel bad for
- 3:13Speaker 5: the Spurs organization also because you know, you're right when
- 3:16Speaker 5: they went out and made that deer in Fox trade.
- 3:18Speaker 5: You're like, man, this team, they're not gonna win the Championship,
- 3:20Speaker 5: but they could get into the play in because Deer
- 3:22Speaker 5: and Foxes of parental your all star. But I just
- 3:25Speaker 5: wish him nothing but the best.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Uh.
- 3:28Speaker 5: But this is a bad look. This is just a
- 3:31Speaker 5: bad thing for that Spurs, for the NBA. I mean
- 3:34Speaker 5: he I mean when he played over in Paris, Man,
- 3:37Speaker 5: it was crazy those two games. So good luck to
- 3:40Speaker 5: him and his family.
- 3:41Speaker 1: You know, according to my doctor friends, just comming for
- 3:44Speaker 1: guys that are very large, you know, especially guys are
- 3:47Speaker 1: very tall, especially with all the flying we do. But
- 3:49Speaker 1: one thing I know about the NBA, especially the Spurs organization,
- 3:52Speaker 1: they have the top medical people. And I'm glad they
- 3:55Speaker 1: just found that the truck makes a great point. Scary.
- 3:58Speaker 1: This is something that you can not wake up from.
- 4:01Speaker 1: So I'm glad they find it, and I'm glad they're
- 4:03Speaker 1: you know, taking control of the situation. And you know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: even though they can make a push of the play
- 4:08Speaker 1: and they're saying, nope, we're shutting you down the whole year.
- 4:10Speaker 1: We're gonna treat this thing. We're gonna make this thing disappear.
- 4:13Speaker 1: And uh, my sentiments go out to him and his family.
- 4:16Speaker 1: He's a great kid, and some day he will be
- 4:19Speaker 1: the face of the league. But he's twenty one years
- 4:21Speaker 1: old and I'm just glad they caught it early, and
- 4:23Speaker 1: I'm glad to Spurs organizations saying, hey, we love you
- 4:26Speaker 1: enough to say forget you know, making a push for
- 4:28Speaker 1: the playing and we care about you. We know you
- 4:30Speaker 1: are a future. We're shutting this thing down the rest
- 4:33Speaker 1: of you.
- 4:33Speaker 4: Well, it's it's it's not safe to play with in
- 4:37Speaker 4: a situation like that, especially, I mean, we don't know,
- 4:40Speaker 4: and you would think giving blood thinners for one, but
- 4:45Speaker 4: it's not. It's not safe to play because of the
- 4:49Speaker 4: physical nature of the game and you're you're more easily
- 4:53Speaker 4: it's it's more likely you will bleed and and you see,
- 4:57Speaker 4: you know, internal bleeding, that kind of thing. This is
- 4:59Speaker 4: nothing to mess with.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Well, yeah, definitely heartbreaking just because of what he's been
- 5:05Speaker 6: doing with in terms of this season obviously with the
- 5:08Speaker 6: Spurs and where they were going. As the news comes
- 5:12Speaker 6: out later, I think those are the questions that the
- 5:15Speaker 6: common person doesn't know, and the Spurs or someone will
- 5:21Speaker 6: give an indication of well, what is that type of
- 5:24Speaker 6: treatment when you have a blood cut in your right shoulder,
- 5:28Speaker 6: what does that actually mean? Why does it mean instead
- 5:33Speaker 6: of one month, two months, three? What does it Why
- 5:35Speaker 6: does it mean thirty days? And why does it mean
- 5:37Speaker 6: it's going to actually be a full recovery at the
- 5:39Speaker 6: end of the startup next season, so or isolated in
- 5:43Speaker 6: this incident?
- 5:44Speaker 5: So what does all that mean?
- 5:45Speaker 6: I think the information will come out a little bit,
- 5:47Speaker 6: maybe not the treatment, but at least the information about
- 5:50Speaker 6: blood clots.
- 5:51Speaker 5: And the first phone call I would make would be
- 5:54Speaker 5: to Chris Bosh. Yeah, because somebody who's been through it
- 5:58Speaker 5: like that would be my first any time I had
- 6:01Speaker 5: some type of major injury, Hey, tell me about what
- 6:03Speaker 5: you what the rehab and things like that, that'd be
- 6:06Speaker 5: my first phone call.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Well, it happened to Chris Bosh and it and it
- 6:09Speaker 4: ended his playing days. It happened to Brandon Ingram, It
- 6:12Speaker 4: happened to us R Thomas, us R. Thompson who have
- 6:15Speaker 4: had blood clots and then we're still able later to play.
- 6:19Speaker 4: But I talked to doctor Jonathan Reiner today. He's a cardiologist.
- 6:24Speaker 4: CNN uses him from time to time. He said, the
- 6:27Speaker 4: most important thing right now is you got to figure
- 6:29Speaker 4: out the cause. Why did this happen? Was there some
- 6:32Speaker 4: trauma to his arm? That damaged a vein or is
- 6:37Speaker 4: there something anatomical going on where And we've seen it before,
- 6:41Speaker 4: like with baseball pitchers, this thoracic outlet syndrome where a
- 6:46Speaker 4: vein is actually compressed by like a rib, and the
- 6:49Speaker 4: only way you could fix that for those players was
- 6:52Speaker 4: to take out a part of the rib. So the
- 6:55Speaker 4: most important thing is why did this happen? And once
- 6:59Speaker 4: you get there, then you decide here's the best course
- 7:02Speaker 4: of treatment. So obviously we can. I say one more thing.
- 7:06Speaker 5: Yeah, I saw some guys on another network the other
- 7:08Speaker 5: day talking about Face of the League, and I was
- 7:11Speaker 5: so annoyed just sitting around watching. You know, Jerry started
- 7:16Speaker 5: with Kevin Durant was talking about weinby Bene Philly. First
- 7:20Speaker 5: of all, you don't give anybody the face of the league,
- 7:23Speaker 5: am I right? Shack Shaq took being faced with Mike,
- 7:27Speaker 5: when Matti Johnson and Larr Bird came in. They're like
- 7:29Speaker 5: with the new sheriffs in town. Shaq took it, Kobe
- 7:33Speaker 5: took it, Lebron took it, Steph took it. But I
- 7:38Speaker 5: get so annoyed when I hear these guys, like, you
- 7:40Speaker 5: don't give somebody something that's one of the problems we got.
- 7:43Speaker 5: These idiots won't play an All Star game. We've given
- 7:45Speaker 5: them so much. They don't have no respect for the history.
- 7:48Speaker 5: But you don't give anybody the face of the game.
- 7:51Speaker 1: You take it.
- 7:52Speaker 4: You don't annoy them. It just it becomes you took it. Yes,
- 7:56Speaker 4: it's what the player. That's what the players made of
- 7:59Speaker 4: and what the player wants.
- 8:00Speaker 1: And to counter what Chuck saying, they whoever they will be,
- 8:03Speaker 1: they will try to put somebody as the face of league.
- 8:06Speaker 1: They do that. But you know, Chuck makes a great point,
- 8:08Speaker 1: you have to go take it. And you know they're
- 8:10Speaker 1: sitting saying him. John Moran is thinking something different, Lucas
- 8:15Speaker 1: thinking something different. You know a lot of young guys. Okay,
- 8:17Speaker 1: you're gonna make it. Man is thinking something different. So
- 8:21Speaker 1: you know it's just uh, them against us syndrome.
- 8:29Speaker 4: And the most important thing, nothing has nothing to do
- 8:31Speaker 4: with basket Nothing just has everything to do with taking
- 8:34Speaker 4: care of something that can be a very very serious situation. Uh.
- 8:37Speaker 4: We'll be coming back with more on t at NB
- 8:39Speaker 4: A tip off.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Correct. They should have gave me the day a Hey,
- 8:47Speaker 1: what a party it was too. That was look at
- 8:50Speaker 1: Ernie Underdog. Put that on a T shirt and.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Look at Kenny. Look at the shot.
- 8:59Speaker 5: Will a kid kid
