- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter three. As soon as he gets home, Geppetto fashions
- 0:04Speaker 1: the marionette and calls it Pinocchio. The first pranks of
- 0:08Speaker 1: the marionette. Little as Geppetto's house was, it was neat
- 0:14Speaker 1: and comfortable. It was a small room on the ground floor,
- 0:18Speaker 1: with a tiny window under the stairway. The furniture could
- 0:21Speaker 1: not have been much simpler. A very old chair, a
- 0:25Speaker 1: rickety old bed, and a tumble down table. A fireplace
- 0:30Speaker 1: full of burning logs was painted on the wall opposite
- 0:33Speaker 1: the door. Over the fire there was painted a pot
- 0:37Speaker 1: full of something which kept boiling happily away and sending
- 0:40Speaker 1: up clouds of what looked like real steam. As soon
- 0:45Speaker 1: as he reached home, Geppetto took his tools and began
- 0:48Speaker 1: to cut and shape the wood into a marionette. What
- 0:52Speaker 1: shall I call him, he said to himself. I think
- 0:55Speaker 1: I'll call him Pinocchio. This name will make his fortune.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I knew the whole family of Pinocchi once Pinocchio the father,
- 1:03Speaker 1: Pinocchio the mother, and Pinocchi the children, and they were
- 1:08Speaker 1: all lucky. The richest of them begged for his living.
- 1:12Speaker 1: After choosing the name for his marionette, Geppetto set seriously
- 1:16Speaker 1: to work to make the hair, the forehead, the eyes.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Fancy his surprise when he noticed that these eyes moved
- 1:25Speaker 1: and then stared fixedly at him. Geppetto, seeing this, felt
- 1:30Speaker 1: insulted and said, in a grieved tone, ugly wooden eyes,
- 1:35Speaker 1: why do you stare so? There was no answer. After
- 1:40Speaker 1: the eyes, Geppetto made the nose, which began to stretch
- 1:43Speaker 1: as soon as finished. It stretched and stretched and stretched
- 1:48Speaker 1: till it became so long it seemed endless. Poor Geppetto
- 1:52Speaker 1: kept cutting it and cutting it, but the more he cut,
- 1:56Speaker 1: the longer grew that impertinent nose. In despase, he left
- 2:00Speaker 1: it alone. Next he made the mouth. No sooner was
- 2:05Speaker 1: it finished than it began to laugh and poke fun
- 2:08Speaker 1: at him. Stop laughing, said Geppetto angrily. But he might
- 2:13Speaker 1: as well have spoken to the wall. Stop laughing, I say,
- 2:17Speaker 1: he roared in a voice of thunder. The mouth stopped laughing,
- 2:21Speaker 1: but it stuck out a long tongue. Not wishing to
- 2:25Speaker 1: start an argument, Geppetto made believe he saw nothing and
- 2:29Speaker 1: went on with his work. After the mouth, he made
- 2:32Speaker 1: the chin, then the neck, the shoulders, the stomach, the arms,
- 2:36Speaker 1: and the hands. As he was about to put a
- 2:39Speaker 1: last touches on the fingertips, Geppetto felt his wig being
- 2:43Speaker 1: pulled off. He glanced up, and what did he see?
- 2:47Speaker 1: His yellow wig was in the marionette's hand. Pinocchio, give
- 2:51Speaker 1: me my wig, But instead of giving it back, Pinocchio
- 2:55Speaker 1: put it on his own head, which was half swallowed
- 2:57Speaker 1: up in it. At that unexpected trick, Geppetto became very
- 3:02Speaker 1: sad and downcast, more so than he had ever been before. Pinocchio,
- 3:07Speaker 1: You wicked boy, he cried out. You are not yet finished,
- 3:11Speaker 1: and you start out by being impudent to your poor
- 3:14Speaker 1: old father. Very bad, my son, very bad. And he
- 3:18Speaker 1: wiped away a tear. The legs and feet still had
- 3:22Speaker 1: to be made. As soon as they were done, Geppetto
- 3:25Speaker 1: felt a sharp kick on the tip of his nose.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I deserve it, he said to himself. I should have
- 3:31Speaker 1: thought of this before I made him. Now it's too late.
- 3:35Speaker 1: He took hold of the marionette under the arms and
- 3:38Speaker 1: put him on the floor to teach him to walk.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Pinocchio's legs were so stiff that he could not move them,
- 3:44Speaker 1: and Geppetto held his hand and showed him how to
- 3:47Speaker 1: put one foot after the other. When his legs were
- 3:50Speaker 1: timbered up, Pinocchio started walking by himself and ran all
- 3:54Speaker 1: around the room. He came to the open door, and
- 3:57Speaker 1: with one leap, he was out into the street. Away
- 4:00Speaker 1: he flew. Poor Geppetto ran after him, but was unable
- 4:04Speaker 1: to catch him, for Pinocchio ran in leaps and bounds
- 4:08Speaker 1: his two wooden feet as they beat on the stones
- 4:10Speaker 1: of the street, making as much noise as twenty peasants
- 4:13Speaker 1: in wooden shoes catch him, catch him. Geppetto kept shouting,
- 4:19Speaker 1: but the people in the street, seeing a wooden marionette
- 4:22Speaker 1: running like the wind, stood still, to stare and to laugh,
- 4:26Speaker 1: until they cried at last by sheer luck. A carabineer
- 4:31Speaker 1: begin note a military policeman and note happened along who,
- 4:37Speaker 1: hearing all that noise, thought that it might be a
- 4:40Speaker 1: runaway colt, and stood bravely in the middle of the
- 4:43Speaker 1: street with legs wide apart, firmly resolved to stop it
- 4:47Speaker 1: and prevent any trouble. Pinocchio saw the carabineer from afar
- 4:52Speaker 1: and tried his best to escape between the legs of
- 4:55Speaker 1: the big fellow, but without success. The carabineer grabbed him
- 5:00Speaker 1: by the nose, it was an extremely long one and
- 5:03Speaker 1: seemed made on purpose for that very thing, and returned
- 5:06Speaker 1: him to Maestro Geppetto. The little old man wanted to
- 5:11Speaker 1: pull Pinocchio's ears. Think how he felt when, upon searching
- 5:15Speaker 1: for them, he discovered that he had forgotten to make them.
- 5:19Speaker 1: All he could do was to seize Pinocchio by the
- 5:21Speaker 1: back of the neck and take him home. As he
- 5:24Speaker 1: was doing so, he shook him two or three times
- 5:26Speaker 1: and said to him angrily, we're going home now. When
- 5:30Speaker 1: we get home, then we'll settle this matter. Pinocchio, on
- 5:34Speaker 1: hearing this, threw himself on the ground and refused to
- 5:38Speaker 1: take another step. One person after another gathered around the two.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Some said one thing, some another. Poor Marionette called out,
- 5:48Speaker 1: a man, I am not surprised he doesn't want to
- 5:50Speaker 1: go home. Geppetto, no doubt, will beat him unmercifully. He
- 5:53Speaker 1: is so mean and cruel. Geppetto looks like a good man,
- 5:57Speaker 1: added another. But with boys, he is a real tyrant.
- 6:01Speaker 1: If we leave that poor marionette in his hands, he
- 6:04Speaker 1: may tear him to pieces. They said so much that
- 6:07Speaker 1: finally the Carabinir ended matters by setting Pinocchio at liberty
- 6:11Speaker 1: and dragging Geppetto to prison. The poor old fellow did
- 6:15Speaker 1: not know how to defend himself, but wept and wailed
- 6:18Speaker 1: like a child, and said, between his sobs, ungrateful boy,
- 6:23Speaker 1: to think I tried so hard to make you a
- 6:25Speaker 1: well behaved marionette. I deserve it. However, I should have
- 6:29Speaker 1: given the matter more thought. What happened after this is
- 6:33Speaker 1: an almost unbelievable story, but you may read it, dear children,
- 6:37Speaker 1: in the chapters that follow. End of chapter three
