- 0:02You're listening to the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:06with Dr. Brenna Hicks.
- 0:09Hi,
- 0:09I'm Dr. Brenna Hicks,
- 0:10The Kid Counselor.
- 0:11This is the Play Therapy Parenting Podcast
- 0:14where I give you insight,
- 0:15awareness,
- 0:15and enlightenment about your parenting
- 0:17and your relationship with your kids.
- 0:20In today's episode,
- 0:20we're continuing the Parent Companion series,
- 0:23and we are going to talk about another visual illustration
- 0:27to make sense of
- 0:29how kids heal
- 0:30and how they grow,
- 0:32specifically in the therapeutic context,
- 0:34but in general,
- 0:36the way that kids operate,
- 0:38sometimes
- 0:38it is hard to understand unless you kind of have something to come back to.
- 0:43So last week we talked about what I call the wave form.
- 0:46Where we talked about the huge spikes,
- 0:48kind of like Afib on a heart monitor.
- 0:51And then over the course of the therapeutic
- 0:54journey,
- 0:54they have that really like rounded lower
- 0:58wave,
- 0:58more like a cosine.
- 1:00So,
- 1:01very similar concept today.
- 1:03You're going to have to visualize something here and we'll,
- 1:05we'll talk through it.
- 1:07But what we're trying to understand is our adulthood bias
- 1:11is always a factor.
- 1:14And
- 1:15when we think about
- 1:17the way that kids are working through things,
- 1:21it's not linear.
- 1:23And our brains are wired cognitively and rationally
- 1:28and intellectually.
- 1:29And so we're always thinking
- 1:32black and white concrete linear.
- 1:34And kids are none of those things.
- 1:36So,
- 1:36it's helpful to have a visualization tool
- 1:40where you can say,
- 1:41all right,
- 1:41I kind of have a sense of why this is happening and what this looks like.
- 1:45It just gives you some why
- 1:47behind
- 1:48the behavior and the process,
- 1:50which
- 1:51doesn't necessarily make it easier,
- 1:52but it does share some insight.
- 1:55And that's usually pretty helpful.
- 1:57So,
- 1:57you're gonna have to
- 1:59think about some things here for a sec.
- 2:01So,
- 2:01if you go back to high school math,
- 2:03X and some of you are like,
- 2:05oh,
- 2:05please no.
- 2:06I know,
- 2:06I promise it's not that bad.
- 2:08All right,
- 2:08so you have your X and your Y axes.
- 2:12And
- 2:12you need to think about kind of,
- 2:13you know,
- 2:14like when you did graphing when you were in high school.
- 2:16All right,
- 2:17so you have your X and your Y axis,
- 2:19and they meet
- 2:20that meet point.
- 2:22If you don't remember this at all,
- 2:24is (0,0)
- 2:26in parentheses.
- 2:27So,
- 2:28so you have your X axis going horizontally,
- 2:30you have your Y axis going vertically.
- 2:33And where that right angle meets
- 2:35is (0,0)
- 2:37So that's where you can think about a child,
- 2:40really anyone,
- 2:41any,
- 2:41any human starting the therapeutic journey.
- 2:44They're at the,
- 2:45the basics at the bottom.
- 2:47All right.
- 2:48So,
- 2:49here's what
- 2:50we often think about
- 2:51when it comes to
- 2:53progress
- 2:54or,
- 2:54or moving or healing,
- 2:57growing,
- 2:57changing.
- 2:58We kind of tend to think of up and right.
- 3:02A lot of times you will see
- 3:04a profit graph,
- 3:06and you'll see up and right.
- 3:08You'll see progress graph up and right.
- 3:10OK,
- 3:10so we kind of have this notion
- 3:12based on an axis understanding.
- 3:15We start at the bottom and then we're going to be going up and right,
- 3:18and there's usually an arrow at the top
- 3:20of that line showing that it continues indefinitely.
- 3:24And you can essentially bisect
- 3:27the.
- 3:29Horizontal and vertical lines at a 45 degree angle.
- 3:33And we're moving
- 3:34in that direction,
- 3:36and it's almost always in a straight line.
- 3:37Why?
- 3:38Because
- 3:38the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.
- 3:41We understand this concept.
- 3:43And as adults with adulthood bias,
- 3:46we're going to say,
- 3:48all right,
- 3:48well,
- 3:48if I'm starting here and I'm ending there,
- 3:50let's go straight line.
- 3:51That's the path.
- 3:53And that
- 3:55isn't even feasible for adults,
- 3:56really,
- 3:57but it is more feasible
- 3:59because we have the ability to reason and be rational and be cognitive,
- 4:03so on and so forth.
- 4:04children,
- 4:04on the other hand,
- 4:05are experiential.
- 4:08They're emotional.
- 4:09We've talked about this.
- 4:10We know this hopefully at this point.
- 4:13And so when they're here and now,
- 4:15and when they're feeling their way through things,
- 4:19It's not
- 4:20black and white.
- 4:21It's not linear,
- 4:22it's not in a line.
- 4:24It's kind of all over the place,
- 4:25really.
- 4:27So here's what happens.
- 4:28A child starts working through stuff,
- 4:30and a child begins the healing process.
- 4:34And we see some
- 4:35change in a positive way.
- 4:38We feel like we're moving up and right.
- 4:40We get really excited about that,
- 4:41as we should,
- 4:43because we know that they're healthier and they're
- 4:45happier and they're sorting through their stuff.
- 4:46And
- 4:47so we feel really
- 4:49pleased with what's happening.
- 4:51And then out of the blue.
- 4:54Things go sideways.
- 4:57And you see old behaviors popping up and you have a massive tantrum
- 5:01and you see new behaviors that have never been around before and you're,
- 5:05you're like,
- 5:05oh my gosh,
- 5:06things are getting worse.
- 5:07Therapy is not helping at all.
- 5:08It's making everything worse.
- 5:09What is happening?
- 5:11And that can be a very helpless feeling.
- 5:13It can be a scary feeling,
- 5:14and it can be a frustrating feeling.
- 5:17And it's not
- 5:18that all of a sudden we were going up and right,
- 5:20and now we've slid down our 45 degree angle line.
- 5:25It is that we were never on a line in the first place.
- 5:29So what you need to think about
- 5:31is a roller coaster track.
- 5:32And I draw this.
- 5:34So I'm,
- 5:34I'm like finger drawing in the air,
- 5:36which doesn't help you at all.
- 5:37But
- 5:38you have to think about,
- 5:39you have the horizontal and the vertical line,
- 5:41and then I draw a straight line in the middle,
- 5:43but then on top of that straight line,
- 5:45that up and right arrow,
- 5:46I draw what looks like a roller coaster track.
- 5:49So it has barrel rolls and loops,
- 5:51and it goes sideways and it goes backwards,
- 5:53and it's like a squiggly line.
- 5:56All over the place.
- 5:58Now,
- 5:59here's
- 6:00the noteworthy piece of this.
- 6:02It is still moving in the general up and right direction.
- 6:07We're not going down and left,
- 6:09we're not going horizontally in either direction.
- 6:12We are
- 6:14moving
- 6:15in an up and right trajectory.
- 6:17It's just a very convoluted way to get there.
- 6:21And so when you have moments where
- 6:24it seems like all the progress that you've made is
- 6:28Obliterated.
- 6:29It seems like things are way worse than they were a week
- 6:32ago or even before you even started therapy in the first place,
- 6:35or before your child started
- 6:36to heal,
- 6:38and you're going,
- 6:38oh my word,
- 6:39what is happening?
- 6:40You're on a roller coaster track.
- 6:42So,
- 6:43imagine your favorite roller coaster.
- 6:46Whatever that one is.
- 6:47Well,
- 6:47I guess that's predicated on
- 6:49the idea that you love roller coasters.
- 6:51Maybe you absolutely hate them.
- 6:53At,
- 6:53at church on Sunday,
- 6:54our pastor was talking about
- 6:57Not roller coasters,
- 6:58but it became part of the sermon.
- 6:59So
- 7:00he said,
- 7:01you know,
- 7:01you go to a
- 7:02theme park with a friend and like you
- 7:04hate roller coasters and they love roller coasters,
- 7:07and they're like,
- 7:07please ride with me.
- 7:08It's just not as fun if I do it by myself and I need
- 7:11you because it just feels so much better when someone's with me and,
- 7:14and you get convinced,
- 7:15if you do not like roller coasters,
- 7:17you get convinced to ride one
- 7:19and you just sit there and you grit your teeth
- 7:20the whole time and you just like get through it.
- 7:23There's nothing about it enjoyable for you.
- 7:25You just get through it.
- 7:27I was like,
- 7:28I am not that person.
- 7:29I don't even know what that's like.
- 7:31I love roller coasters.
- 7:33I love them.
- 7:34So,
- 7:34if you like roller coasters,
- 7:36imagine your favorite one.
- 7:37If you don't,
- 7:39I'm not really sure how this analogy is going to work for you,
- 7:41but
- 7:42The track
- 7:43of the roller coaster.
- 7:46I
- 7:47Starting at one point
- 7:49and ending at one point.
- 7:52We know
- 7:53the ultimate trajectory of the roller coaster.
- 7:56It starts and it ends,
- 7:58and those are fixed points.
- 8:00We know.
- 8:02That those do not change.
- 8:04But the track
- 8:06is different.
- 8:07And sometimes there's 3 barrel rolls and sometimes there's 3 loops,
- 8:11and sometimes you go sideways and sometimes you turn upside down,
- 8:13and sometimes you go through a tunnel and sometimes you
- 8:16go up really high and it's just a huge drop.
- 8:19I might be
- 8:20making half of you want to feel nauseous.
- 8:22I'm sorry.
- 8:23But
- 8:24roller coasters
- 8:26are all over the place,
- 8:27and for me,
- 8:28the crazier the better.
- 8:29The higher,
- 8:30the faster,
- 8:31the more loops,
- 8:31the more barrel rolls,
- 8:32I love it.
- 8:35But I know
- 8:36where I'm starting and where I'm ending.
- 8:38It's the same thing with our kids,
- 8:40y'all.
- 8:41We know we're starting at (0,0) in parentheses,
- 8:44and we know we're going up and right.
- 8:46But there's a lot of twists and turns and zigs and zags along the way,
- 8:50and that is normal.
- 8:52We cannot expect the process to be linear,
- 8:55because it's not.
- 8:56And so
- 8:57what happens is we are getting there.
- 9:00But it's going to look
- 9:02a little loony at times,
- 9:04and you might feel a little sick at times,
- 9:05I suppose,
- 9:06to follow that analogy.
- 9:08But
- 9:09the goal is,
- 9:11That we trust
- 9:13that we are going in the direction that we want to go.
- 9:16We trust our kids.
- 9:18We trust the model.
- 9:20We trust
- 9:21that CCPT works.
- 9:24And
- 9:25sometimes,
- 9:25yeah,
- 9:26a kid takes a really crazy path.
- 9:29But that's normal.
- 9:30You know how many adults that are in therapy?
- 9:33They don't
- 9:34experience and feel their way through things.
- 9:36They talk and think their way through things.
- 9:38We understand developmentally we're in different places,
- 9:40but adults take crazy paths to healing too.
- 9:44Adults will just make excuses and not show up.
- 9:47They'll ignore the deep,
- 9:48dark stuff that they really need to talk about,
- 9:50and they'll talk about their friends
- 9:52and that they went out on the weekend and they
- 9:54went to the beach and they did this and that.
- 9:56They'll kill
- 9:57time in sessions
- 9:58to avoid the stuff they need to go.
- 10:00They're,
- 10:01they're doing circles.
- 10:01They're doing doughnuts in the parking lot.
- 10:04Look,
- 10:05you need to just start driving,
- 10:06like,
- 10:07get going.
- 10:08There,
- 10:08there's a path,
- 10:09go drive,
- 10:09and they're doing doughnuts.
- 10:11Why?
- 10:11Because I don't want to do that yet.
- 10:14So,
- 10:15this is a very universal thing.
- 10:17It's just it's more pronounced with kids
- 10:20because they have to feel,
- 10:22experience,
- 10:23and emote their way through this stuff.
- 10:26And as that process unfolds.
- 10:29It can look a little wild and crazy,
- 10:32but this is where you trust your therapist,
- 10:33this is where you trust your child,
- 10:35this is where you trust the,
- 10:36the model.
- 10:38And we know that we are in fact getting there,
- 10:40and here's what will happen.
- 10:42Not because I'm telling you,
- 10:45because it's true.
- 10:46And I could put you in touch with so many families with whom I've worked over the years
- 10:51that have come to the center
- 10:52that have expressed this very thing.
- 10:55You're going sideways and you're going backwards
- 10:58and you're going upside down and you're twisting and turning and you're like,
- 11:02oh my word,
- 11:03I don't even have any clue what's happening or
- 11:05why we're doing what we're doing or where we're going
- 11:08and then out of the blue.
- 11:10You get to a part of the track where you're like,
- 11:13oh.
- 11:15Huh,
- 11:16OK,
- 11:17yeah,
- 11:17we've,
- 11:18we've been on the path the whole time.
- 11:19It sure didn't seem or look or feel or anything like it,
- 11:22but,
- 11:23hm,
- 11:23all right,
- 11:24glad I stuck it out.
- 11:25Glad I didn't bail.
- 11:27Glad I didn't jump out of the roller coaster because
- 11:30I see it now.
- 11:31All right,
- 11:32we're,
- 11:32we're getting toward the end.
- 11:34OK,
- 11:34I,
- 11:35I know where we're heading now,
- 11:37and I can see
- 11:38that we have been on that path the whole time.
- 11:41It was just hard to decipher.
- 11:43When you are patient and when you trust it.
- 11:47You've always known where you were going,
- 11:48even though it was hard to see.
- 11:51That's why I draw this.
- 11:52That's why I draw the straight up and right line,
- 11:55and then I draw all the twists and turns and zigs and zags over top of it because
- 11:59we have to bring ourselves back to this and remind ourselves of this.
- 12:04Otherwise,
- 12:04it's really frustrating and it's defeating and it's tempting to say,
- 12:08yeah,
- 12:08this isn't working.
- 12:09I'm,
- 12:09I'm not going to do this anymore.
- 12:12You know,
- 12:13the danger of jumping off a roller coaster mid-ride,
- 12:16we wouldn't do it.
- 12:18We don't want to jump off the
- 12:20therapy ride
- 12:22in the middle.
- 12:24Because it's not finished.
- 12:26And sometimes it's a very,
- 12:28very crazy convoluted way to get there,
- 12:30but we're getting there.
- 12:32And so I hope that analogy is helpful,
- 12:34even if your kid is not in therapy.
- 12:36Please know
- 12:36that as kids are working through things and as kids are
- 12:39developing and as they're maturing and as they're sorting through life,
- 12:43things go sideways and upside down and it's always temporary.
- 12:48That is the nature of
- 12:49childhood.
- 12:51And we can't let our intellectual rational way of seeing the world
- 12:56change
- 12:57our perspective on that.
- 12:58We have to come down to the child's level.
- 13:01They can't come up to ours.
- 13:03And so just having that visualization is often very helpful.
- 13:06I hope that it was helpful for you.
- 13:07So,
- 13:08I love y'all.
- 13:09Keep loving on your kids.
- 13:10We'll talk again soon.
- 13:11Bye.
