- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Norwegian with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 80 — that feels big. Lucas: It is. And today we're doing something new: talking about the past. Luna: Oh, like what we did earlier? 'I ate breakfast'? Lucas: Exactly. We've covered present tense verbs like 'jeg spiser' and 'jeg drikker'. Now let's step back in time. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. How do you say 'I ate breakfast' in Norwegian? Lucas: Jeg spiste frokost. Luna: Jeg spiste frokost. So 'spiste' is the past tense of 'å spise'? Lucas: Yes. Most weak verbs add '-te' to the stem. 'Spise' becomes 'spiste'. Let's hear it again: Jeg spiste frokost. Luna: Jeg spiste frokost. I ate breakfast. That's easy. Lucas: Now try: I drank coffee. Luna: Jeg drakk kaffe. Lucas: Perfect. 'Drikke' becomes 'drakk' — that's a strong verb, so it changes vowel. But still simple. Luna: So 'drakk' not 'drikkte'. Got it. Jeg drakk kaffe. Lucas: Good. Now, how would you ask someone 'What did you eat?' in Norwegian? Luna: Hmm... 'Hva spiste du?' Lucas: Exactly right. Hva spiste du? Luna: Hva spiste du? And 'What did you drink?' would be 'Hva drakk du?' Lucas: Yes! Hva drakk du? Let's practice these together. Luna: Okay, so I can say: Jeg spiste frokost, og jeg drakk kaffe. Lucas: Nice. And if you want to ask me: Hva spiste du til frokost? Luna: Hva spiste du til frokost? What did you eat for breakfast? Lucas: Jeg spiste brød med ost og drakk melk. Luna: Oh, bread with cheese and milk. Sounds Norwegian. Lucas: It is. Now let's do a quick scene. Imagine you met a friend after breakfast. Luna: Okay, I'll be me. Hei! Hva spiste du til frokost? Lucas: Jeg spiste egg og drakk juice. Og du? Luna: Jeg spiste havregrøt og drakk te. Lucas: Flott! You used the past tense naturally. Luna: Yeah, it's starting to click. Lucas: You know, if Fexingo has been helping you make progress with Norwegian like this, there's a simple way to support the show. Luna: Right. If today was worth a coffee to you, that's the link. Repeat after me: Jeg spiste frokost. Luna: Jeg spiste frokost. Lucas: Jeg drakk kaffe. Luna: Jeg drakk kaffe. Lucas: Now ask me: Hva spiste du? Luna: Hva spiste du? Lucas: Jeg spiste en sandwich. And you ask: Hva drakk du? Luna: Hva drakk du? Lucas: Jeg drakk vann. Perfect. So remember: for most verbs, add '-te' for past. For strong ones like 'drikke', learn the change. Luna: And practice with questions. That's how we use it in real life. Lucas: Exactly. Practice these till we chat again. See you next time! Luna: Ha det bra!
