Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE Friday: If It's Not a Hell Yes, Then It's a Hell No
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hay Hurdler's Emily A Body here bringing you another episode
- 0:23Speaker 1: of five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I had a good week,
- 0:28Speaker 1: and I feel like it's important to stop and have
- 0:32Speaker 1: some gratitude for a week that may not have been
- 0:36Speaker 1: as productive as I hoped that it would be, but
- 0:39Speaker 1: felt like it had a ton of small ones in there.
- 0:42Speaker 1: So I'm putting this into the world. If you too
- 0:45Speaker 1: are feeling a little like stuck but also finding some
- 0:48Speaker 1: small gratitudes, you and I are on the same wavelength
- 0:51Speaker 1: for five Minute Friday this week. If you're new to
- 0:53Speaker 1: this segment on the show on Fridays, I kind of
- 0:56Speaker 1: put out into the world a story from my past
- 0:59Speaker 1: week or maybe my past in general, and offer you
- 1:02Speaker 1: a thought prompt to take you into the weekend to
- 1:05Speaker 1: get those wheels turning, and then share with you some
- 1:08Speaker 1: of my content picks, some of my highlights from the
- 1:11Speaker 1: last seven days. So this week I am talking about
- 1:16Speaker 1: the purge. If you follow me on social media, I'm
- 1:20Speaker 1: over at Emily a Body and Hurdle is over at
- 1:22Speaker 1: Hurdle Podcast as well, then you may have seen me
- 1:27Speaker 1: doing a huge clean out understatement of my apartment last
- 1:33Speaker 1: weekend and that has been something that has been a
- 1:36Speaker 1: long time coming, and it's also something that I do
- 1:40Speaker 1: to some extent, like every other month.
- 1:43Speaker 2: And I know what you're thinking.
- 1:44Speaker 1: You're probably like, how do you gain garner gather enough
- 1:49Speaker 1: stuff in your home to be able to like donate
- 1:53Speaker 1: bags of things to Goodwill every month? And you know what,
- 1:57Speaker 1: sometimes I wonder this as well. I'm like, how did
- 1:59Speaker 1: I end up with all this stuff? So I have
- 2:02Speaker 1: a few explanations for this. Firstly, there's like the stuff
- 2:06Speaker 1: that falls into the category of like every time I
- 2:09Speaker 1: go to do an apartment clean out, I think to myself,
- 2:12Speaker 1: you know what, like this is going to make the cut.
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm going to try wearing it more. Maybe I'll use
- 2:17Speaker 1: it for X or Y or whatever. So there's that stuff,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and then there's the stuff that gets sent to me
- 2:24Speaker 1: by different brands. Now I've definitely touched on this on
- 2:28Speaker 1: the show before, but as a fitness journalist, I write
- 2:31Speaker 1: about and review a lot of new and upcoming products.
- 2:35Speaker 1: So if you want to know about the latest and
- 2:37Speaker 1: greatest sneakers, I got you, I try them, I can
- 2:40Speaker 1: give you my honest feedback, and all is right in
- 2:42Speaker 1: the world. You want to know about leggings or gloves
- 2:47Speaker 1: or other products like CBD things or skincare or god like.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Literally the list is endless.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I get so much stuff that is shipped to my
- 2:58Speaker 1: home for review. And it was one thing when I
- 3:00Speaker 1: was working at a big publishing company, like working at
- 3:03Speaker 1: something like Roadale or Conde Nast, when I was the
- 3:06Speaker 1: fitness editor itself, when I received these products and these things,
- 3:10Speaker 1: I could try them or look at them. And then
- 3:13Speaker 1: because I shared this office space with so many other individuals,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I could pass on these things to someone who was
- 3:21Speaker 1: really hyped about them. Right. Well, now that I work
- 3:25Speaker 1: and live alone, work for myself and live alone, I
- 3:30Speaker 1: don't have necessarily someone to pass these things onto, especially
- 3:34Speaker 1: in the times of the COVID, So I digress. This
- 3:39Speaker 1: purge that I did last weekend was a big one.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I was donating a lot of great stuff to my
- 3:45Speaker 1: local goodwill in the process of cleaning out my apartment
- 3:48Speaker 1: because someone can get a lot of great use out
- 3:51Speaker 1: of the things that no longer are serving me. And
- 3:54Speaker 1: it was like we were laughing. I invited one of
- 3:57Speaker 1: my good friends, Kara over for the purge. She's been
- 4:00Speaker 1: in my COVID bubble for months now. She's one of
- 4:02Speaker 1: my dearest friends. We both get tested regularly. Just a
- 4:05Speaker 1: little caveat there. Noticed that I said that right she
- 4:08Speaker 1: came over. We drank some beers, we had mimosas, we
- 4:12Speaker 1: ordered a pizza, and we cleaned out my apartment and man,
- 4:16Speaker 1: we found some stuff, like the laughing that we were doing.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I probably donated about fifteen to twenty pairs of sneakers.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I also maybe donated at least ten jackets, and I
- 4:29Speaker 1: found my old weight watchers way in log I found
- 4:33Speaker 1: things gifts that I at one point wanted to give
- 4:36Speaker 1: to someone that I was dating and then never gave
- 4:38Speaker 1: it to them because we stopped dating. And like, I
- 4:40Speaker 1: don't know what you're supposed to do with those things
- 4:41Speaker 1: in that circumstance. Like, I just found so much stuff,
- 4:45Speaker 1: And I also was really proud of myself because I
- 4:48Speaker 1: got very stern about what was staying and what was
- 4:52Speaker 1: going right. It was like that doesn't fit anymore. I
- 4:55Speaker 1: didn't like the way this looked anyway. I'm not using that.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I haven't used it in a year, and just left
- 5:00Speaker 1: and right out out out and it felt like just
- 5:03Speaker 1: one big, one big exhale, right, and I think so often.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I am definitely guilty of this. I keep things because
- 5:14Speaker 1: I know what my life is like with them, right,
- 5:17Speaker 1: So it's not just you know, jackets in my kitchen closet.
- 5:22Speaker 1: It's like relationships, Okay, relationships. It's a MacBook that might
- 5:28Speaker 1: not be operating properly. It's a pair of sneakers that
- 5:32Speaker 1: are like heavily worn through that I just can't get
- 5:34Speaker 1: rid of. We keep these things around because they're familiar,
- 5:37Speaker 1: because they bring us comfort. But when you take the
- 5:41Speaker 1: time to do something like the purge, when you take
- 5:43Speaker 1: the time to get rid of things and start fresh,
- 5:48Speaker 1: that takes courage, and that opens up new doors for
- 5:53Speaker 1: so many other things to come into your life. I
- 5:57Speaker 1: feel lighter after the purge. I feel like my apartment
- 6:01Speaker 1: has more space for creativity. I feel excited, and you know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: it's a nice reminder for me that there are other
- 6:12Speaker 1: things going on in my life that might need the
- 6:15Speaker 1: same treatment. My promptery this week isn't actually a prompt
- 6:18Speaker 1: at all. Instead, it's me asking you what is it
- 6:21Speaker 1: that you can get rid of, what is no longer
- 6:24Speaker 1: serving you? Please, if you're listening to this tag me
- 6:27Speaker 1: on social media, let me know what it is that
- 6:30Speaker 1: you're clearing out this weekend. I dare you to clear
- 6:34Speaker 1: out three things highlights of the week this week. All
- 6:39Speaker 1: of this goodness links to it can be found in
- 6:42Speaker 1: the show notes. First up, read and watch The New
- 6:45Speaker 1: York Times. I Achieved my wildest dreams and then depression hit.
- 6:49Speaker 1: This is an op ed that came out earlier this
- 6:51Speaker 1: week from runner Alexi Papas.
- 6:53Speaker 2: She it literally stopped me in my tracks.
- 6:56Speaker 1: In it, she talks about how we should view physical
- 7:00Speaker 1: and mental health as equally important. And something that really
- 7:03Speaker 1: stood out to me when I was watching it was
- 7:05Speaker 1: when she equated her struggles with mental health with literally
- 7:09Speaker 1: having a scratch on her brain that she needed to
- 7:11Speaker 1: rehab and when she thought of it that way, it
- 7:14Speaker 1: helped her understand and really prioritize investing in her mental
- 7:18Speaker 1: health and regularly going to therapy and doing something about it.
- 7:22Speaker 2: She opens up about.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Her story about going to the Olympics and after the
- 7:26Speaker 1: Olympics just feeling so beside herself and not herself and unhappy.
- 7:31Speaker 1: And I just really commend Alexi for being bold, for
- 7:35Speaker 1: being honest, for being vulnerable, because her putting her story
- 7:39Speaker 1: out there is going to do so much good for
- 7:42Speaker 1: so many others. Watch Happiest Season on Hulu. Love Me
- 7:48Speaker 1: a Good Kristen Stewart and Daniel Levy Moment you Know
- 7:51Speaker 1: Daniel Levy from Chit's Creek. Basically, The Happiest Season is
- 7:54Speaker 1: a holiday movie. Kristin Stewart and Mackenzie Davis are two
- 7:58Speaker 1: gay women that are going home to see each other's
- 8:01Speaker 1: families for the holidays for the first time. I haven't
- 8:03Speaker 1: watched it yet, but it looks hilarious and who doesn't
- 8:06Speaker 1: love a lame holiday movie On a Sunday night this
- 8:10Speaker 1: time of year, Listen to podcast New mindset whodas Fifty
- 8:16Speaker 1: Shades of ok Relationships.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I'll be honest.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Some days, I'm just scrolling through the top episodes on
- 8:23Speaker 1: the health and wellness charts on Apple Podcasts looking for
- 8:26Speaker 1: new content, and this one caught my eye, and I'm
- 8:29Speaker 1: happy that it did. I love the way that the host,
- 8:32Speaker 1: his name is Kenny Case, how he talks.
- 8:35Speaker 2: I love how he talks about okay relationships.
- 8:37Speaker 1: And saying that the fastest road to an okay relationship,
- 8:40Speaker 1: which is just like subpar, prevent someone from feeling alone
- 8:45Speaker 1: but isn't really like the gem or the home run.
- 8:48Speaker 1: The fastest road to getting into one of those relationships
- 8:51Speaker 1: is pursuing what you're told you're supposed to want in
- 8:54Speaker 1: a partner versus what you actually want in a partner.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Just some food for thought.
- 9:01Speaker 1: And lastly, I do want to highlight in here doing
- 9:04Speaker 1: the purge I mentioned. I've talked about it on social media.
- 9:08Speaker 1: If you were watching that, you may have DM me
- 9:12Speaker 1: about the sweatshirt that my friend was wearing. And I'm
- 9:14Speaker 1: putting a link in the show notes to a similar
- 9:17Speaker 1: sweatshirt because I probably got I'm not even over exaggerating here,
- 9:20Speaker 1: like twenty to thirty dms asking about it. So it's
- 9:23Speaker 1: a Scuba Shirpa half zip sweatshirt.
- 9:26Speaker 2: Wow.
- 9:27Speaker 1: Try saying that five times fast, and it's super cute
- 9:30Speaker 1: and I got you. I think that's it for now.
- 9:33Speaker 1: If you are interested, this coming Wednesday at one pm
- 9:37Speaker 1: Easter and I am hosting the final end of your
- 9:39Speaker 1: goal Setting Workshop, I would love to see you there.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Sign up via the link in the show notes, and
- 9:45Speaker 1: if you have anything else, if you want to say hi,
- 9:48Speaker 1: if you want to share how much you love the show,
- 9:50Speaker 1: I would love for you to post about it on
- 9:53Speaker 1: social media and tag hurdle podcast again. That's at hurdle
