- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Thanks for listening to Heroes, Villains, and the In-Between.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: The pressure didn't arrive like a storm.
- 0:27SPEAKER_02: Prepped in quietly, first as whispers, low voices drifting through the campfire smoke.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: The soldiers spoke in careful tones.
- 0:37SPEAKER_02: As if fear might grow stronger if it came out loud.
- 0:42SPEAKER_02: They counted the days on their fingers.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: They watched the hills.
- 0:47SPEAKER_02: Every sound felt louder than it should.
- 0:51SPEAKER_02: Snap twig, a distant shout, the metallic rattle of armor shifting in nervous hands.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Because somewhere beyond those hills, an army waited, and the clock was running out.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: At the center of the camp stood the man responsible for it all.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: Saul, King of Israel.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: The title still felt new on his shoulders.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Not long ago, he had been an anonymous man wandering fields looking for lost animals.
- 1:23SPEAKER_02: Now thousands looked to him for answers.
- 1:27SPEAKER_02: Leadership had found him quickly, and it had found him unprepared.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: But he reminded himself of something important.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: He had been chosen.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: Chosen by God, by the prophet Samuel, and by the people.
- 1:43SPEAKER_02: That had to mean something.
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: The instructions had been clear.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: Do nothing until the prophet arrives.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Just wait.
- 1:52SPEAKER_02: Do not rush into war.
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Do not perform the sacrifice yourself.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: Victory would not come through numbers, but through trust.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Day one passed, then day two, then three.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: Each sunrise tightened the knot in Saul's chest, and the soldiers grew restless.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: Saul tried to reason with himself.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: Someone has to act.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: Someone has to keep morale alive.
- 2:19SPEAKER_02: Someone has to show strength before fear swallows the entire army.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: Prophet had said he would come.
- 2:27SPEAKER_02: But the prophet was late, and every minute of silence felt like abandonment.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: So Saul stepped forward.
- 2:35SPEAKER_02: The altar was ready.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: The sacrifice prepared.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: He had watched priests make sacrifices before.
- 2:42SPEAKER_02: He knew the motions, the words, the gestures.
- 2:45SPEAKER_02: Why not?
- 2:46SPEAKER_02: He was king after all.
- 2:48SPEAKER_02: And the sacrifice was complete.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: The soldiers watched as the offering burned and smoke rose into the sky.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Then Samuel arrived.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: His eyes scanned the altar.
- 3:01SPEAKER_02: What have you done?
- 3:02SPEAKER_02: Saul answered quickly.
- 3:04SPEAKER_02: The men were scattering, the enemy was approaching.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: You didn't come when you said you would.
- 3:08SPEAKER_02: Someone had to act, someone had to lead, someone had to take responsibility.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: It all sounded reasonable.
- 3:15SPEAKER_02: However, obedience does not bend to circumstance.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: You have acted foolishly, said Samuel.
- 3:23SPEAKER_02: You did not keep the command of the Lord.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: The Lord would have established your kingdom forever, but now your kingdom will not endure.
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Something changed inside Saul that day.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: Obedience became negotiable.
- 3:39SPEAKER_02: The crown remained on Saul's head as years passed.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Battles were fought, enemies fell, victory followed victory.
- 3:48SPEAKER_02: And success began whispering a dangerous lie.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: If things are going well, God must approve.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Then the command came again from the prophet.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: Impossible to misunderstand.
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: The Amalekites were to be completely defeated.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Not partially, not symbolically, completely.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: No spoils, no trophies, no exceptions.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: This was not about strategy.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: It was about trust.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Daw went off to war and the battle went well.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: And they won complete and total victory.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Standing among the ruins were the spoils of triumph.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Healthy livestock and wealth that could not easily be ignored.
- 4:30SPEAKER_02: It would be wasteful to destroy it all.
- 4:33SPEAKER_02: Wouldn't it?
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Surely something could be saved for sacrifice, for worship, for God.
- 4:39SPEAKER_02: When Samuel arrived again, Saul ran out to meet him, smiling and proud of his effort.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: I have performed the command of the Lord, he said.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: But before the words finished settling, Samuel asked quietly, What then is this sound that I hear?
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: Saul answered without hesitation.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: The people spared the best animals for sacrifice, for worship to God.
- 5:05SPEAKER_02: He had reframed disobedience as devotion.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Samuel's response struck like thunder.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: And to heed than the fat of red.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: God has not asked for offerings, he had asked for obedience.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: What Saul preserved was not for worship, it was for pride.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: The belief that he could improve on God's command, that partial obedience was close enough.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: It never is.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: Again, Saul panicked.
- 5:48SPEAKER_02: He grabbed Samuel's robe desperate, trying to hold on to something that was already slipping away.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: I have sinned, but honor me now before the elders of Israel.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Honor me before the people, men first, God second.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: That had always been the order for Saul.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Even when he didn't realize it, the tragedy of Saul's life was not rebellion, it was substitution.
- 6:17SPEAKER_02: He substituted public approval for private obedience, image for integrity, results for faithfulness.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: He wanted God's blessing without surrendering to God's authority, and heaven would not allow it.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: What he lacked was a surrendered art.
- 6:37SPEAKER_02: Saul, the first king of Israel.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Well, hello, and welcome to Heroes Villains in the In Between.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: You've just watched an animated video on King Saul.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: He's our subject today.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: I think of anyone in Scripture, uh Saul's story is sobering because he starts off average, he becomes good, and he has a faithful prophet next to him.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: He's anointed, God's with him, yet his end is in defeat alone and cut off from the Lord.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: And it just it's it's a sobering story.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: If you look at his background, Saul was son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Um he said that you know, I'm I'm in the smallest tribe, Benjamin.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: My family is the least in that tribe.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: So there's nothing about him that stood out, other than he must have been a very tall man and a handsome man, uh, very appealing to the people.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Israel requested a king.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: You know, when you look at Israel, uh the you know, the the you break up the time from Moses uh all the way to Jesus.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: The time of Jesus, the priests were running things.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Before the priests, the kings were running things, and before the kings, the prophets were running things.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: It's divided up almost almost equally, by the way.
- 8:24SPEAKER_00: And so Saul became the first king of Israel.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Um the people wanted a king.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: Uh in fact, um it says that that the people didn't reject you, talking to the prophet, or Saul didn't reject you, the people didn't reject you, they rejected me, God speaking, right?
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: And so his relationship with God and Samuel, uh, you know, God gave him another heart, he empowered him, his character, he was very brave, he was a good soldier, a good leader, um, and uh, you know, but he was driven by the fear of the people.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: He wanted approval from the people.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: You know, if you want approval of people and you want people to say, well, look at look at me, look at me.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: There's no room for God in that relationship, really none.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: You know, so let's look at some of the points.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: I have three areas of his life.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: There's many.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: We could do an exhaustive study on him.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: But I want to look at 1 Samuel chapter 10, and we're gonna jump around in the chapter, uh, sort of put it together in a single compilation.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: It says, Then Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on his head, kissed him, and said, Is this not because the Lord has anointed you commander over his inheritance?
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon you, and you prophesied with them, and turned into another man.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: So the Bible's telling us after his anointing he turned into another man, right?
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: And let it be when these signs come to you that you do not have occasion to demands, for God is with you.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: So it was when he had turned his back to go from Samuel that God gave him another heart, and all those signs came to pass that day.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: And the Saul and Saul, the son of Kish, was chosen.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: But when they had sought him, he could not be found.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Therefore they inquired of the Lord further, has the man come here yet?
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And the Lord answered, There he is, hidden among the equipment.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: So they ran and brought him from there, and when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: So he was a tall man.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: And Samuel said to all the people, Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen?
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: That there is no one like him among the people?
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: So all the people shouted and said, Long live the king.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: So he has this great start, right?
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, all of the things you would want from the Lord, right?
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: God anointed him to be king.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: He the Bible says he turned into another man.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: In other words, he changed almost immediately because God was with him.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: You know, and when it came to his presence as king, he hid among the equipment.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: He had humility at the beginning.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: He was he was humble.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: I'm sure it felt awkward for him to be there.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: I mean, he went from the smallest tribe, the least significant group of people, to the lowest in that tribe, to now being king over all of the tribes, right?
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And so now he's he has this place, his appearance is very strong, he's tall, you know, and so the lesson God's gifts are real, uh, but they have to be guarded guarded, and your heart has to be guarded.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: As we go in the study today, you have to see this migration that took a place in him as we go into his life.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: So the second area, I I named it disobedience and rejection.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: In chapter 1 Samuel 15, again I put a compilation together.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: It says, Samuel also said to Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people, over Israel.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Now therefore, heed the voice of the words of the Lord.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Now go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: But Saul and the people spared Agog, the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: But everyone this this despised and worthless, they utterly destroyed.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel, and I want to just stop there and just talk about this a little bit.
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: So God gives a commandment to the prophet to go tell the king to utterly destroy everything.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: Leave nothing.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Men, women, children, ox, leave nothing.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And they were acting as God's instrument of judgment.
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: So Saul goes and leads the people, and the Bible tells us that they spared Agog, which was the king, right?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: The best of the sheep, the fatlings, the lambs, and destroyed everything that was worthless.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: So why would you keep the king?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: It's a trophy.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Go back to all the people with the army, hang them, kill them before the people.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Look at me.
- 14:10SPEAKER_00: Look at what I did, right?
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Why would you keep the sheep and the oxen and the fatlings and the lambs?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: The best of them.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Money.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: The world.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: So they did this great compromise.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: The king had the authority to say, no, kill them all.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: But he didn't.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: He didn't.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: And they just killed the things that were worthless.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: Now the word of the Lord came to Samuel saying, I greatly regret that I have set up Saul as king, for he has turned his back and follow from following me, and has not performed my commandments.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Then Samuel went to Saul.
- 14:54SPEAKER_00: Saul said to him, Blessed are you of the Lord.
- 14:57SPEAKER_00: I have performed the commandments of the Lord.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: But Samuel said, What then is the belating of the sheep in my ear and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Saul said, They, notice, they, the people, they have brought them back from the Amalekites, for the people spared the best of the sheep and the oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Now listen to the words here.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And the rest we have utterly destroyed.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: So Samuel said, Has the Lord great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as obeying the voice of the Lord?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, to heed better than the fat of the ram.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: For rebellion is the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idultery.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: Then Saul said to Samuel, I have sinned, I have transgressed the commandments of the Lord, your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: Now, if you even continue on in this chapter, you'll see that after rejection, after this rebuke from the prophet, he still still wants Samuel to go with him before the people, so that the people would still think he was connected.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: He didn't care about truth.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: He cared about image.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: And I'm telling you, it's one of the greatest, it will separate you from God.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: Your pride will separate you from God.
- 16:34SPEAKER_00: So this was not Saul's first uh uh failure, but it was the one that broke the relationship.
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: He said, I did obey, I did destroy them, but the truth is he didn't.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: But in his eyes, just like today, a 90% is a passing grade.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: 51% in a democracy wins.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: In God's kingdom, that's not true.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: It's a hundred percent or nothing.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Do you understand?
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: In a monarchy, a theocracy, the the king owns everything, and the king's demands have to be followed at a hundred percent.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: You know, and so God's commandment was to utterly destroy everything, not just the worthless pieces.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: And so he set up a monument to himself, number one, and number two is he blamed the people, but he feared the people.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: And that's the thing that we have to understand.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: The fear of man, more than the fear of God, should not be an easy decision for a Christian.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: The fear of God has to top that all the time.
- 18:00SPEAKER_00: And then Samuel tells him, obeying the word is better than any sacrifice.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Why would you sacrifice to God and worship God if you're not obeying him?
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: And that's a good point for us to take away from today's teaching.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And he calls the rebellion witchcraft, he calls it idolatry.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Witchcraft really means that you want to control things.
- 18:25SPEAKER_00: Witches want to control.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: And he wanted to control things.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: And he said, I feared the people.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And so his end, let's look at uh at his end uh in 1 Samuel chapter 31.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: It says, Now the Philistines fought against Israel, the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell on Mount Gilboah.
- 18:47SPEAKER_00: Then the Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and the Philistines killed Jonathan, uh Abinadab, and Malkishesh and Saul's sons.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: And the battle became fierce against Saul.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: The archers hit him, he was severely wounded by the archers.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: Then Saul said to armor bearer, draw your sword, thrust me through with it, least these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid.
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: Therefore Saul took the sword, fell on it.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: So Saul, his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all three men died together that same day.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: So Saul, you know, Saul's fell fall didn't happen in a single day.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: His death came in a single day.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: But after his rejection, the Spirit of the Lord departed from him.
- 19:53SPEAKER_00: And there are a couple chapters in between this.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: He became severely jealous of David.
- 20:03SPEAKER_00: Became severely jealous of David.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: Before his final battle, uh Saul inquired of the Lord, and the Lord didn't answer, so he went to the witch at Endor and inquired in the occult.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: And that's a whole story on its own.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: But his own sword from his own hand ended up taking his life.
- 20:30SPEAKER_00: First Chronicles chapter 10, verse 13 and 14 says that God's final verdict.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: So Saul died for his unfaithfulness, which he had committed against the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and also because he consulted a medium for guidance, but he did not inquire of the Lord.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: You know, so when you look at his life, you know, I think, and I've seen this in my ministry life for years.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: People, when they're lean and first starting out, uh they come to the Lord, they have this experience with God, God starts meeting their needs, and as they grow in worldly things and power and authority and pride, they begin to drift away from God.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: They begin to drift.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh it's always good to be a little hungry, right?
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: And stay hungry for the Lord.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: But this is a classic example of someone having nothing, God bestowing on them, and them growing to the point where their own pride said, I got here and I can do this on my own.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: You know, so our closing takeaways are he was chosen and anointed, but he obeyed partially.
- 21:55SPEAKER_00: You know, uh lukewarm is is not fully zealous.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Compromise is not fully zealous.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: You know, he ended up in ruins.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: So here's the thing guard your relationship with God, protect it, reject partial obedience.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: Don't fear the people around you.
- 22:17SPEAKER_00: Don't care what they think or say.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Care about what God is thinking and what he says.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: You'll always be better off.
- 22:26SPEAKER_00: The Bible tells us that our lifestyle will be foolishness to the world.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: So don't buy into that.
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: Stop making excuses.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: You know, that's one thing about David.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: He never made excuses.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: Adam made an excuse.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: The wife you gave me, you know, uh David said, I've sinned against the Lord.
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: You know, watch out for jealousy, seek God and finish well.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Finish well.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Don't start well and not finish well.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Finish well.
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And so when you look at the life of Samuel, and hopefully when we we do these uh uh curriculum pieces, they're meant to ignite something in you.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, he's a good character study.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: You know, read four or five chapters, uh, you know, or more than that, 15 chapters in uh 1 Samuel, and you'll see how he pursued David, he wanted to kill David, Jonathan, his own son, protected David.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Nobody could understand what he was doing or why he was doing it.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: You know, the Bible actually says he was sort of demon-possessed, if you will.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: And so when we look at Saul, uh let's not make him a model for our lives, amen.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: You know, in Heroes, Villains, and in between, when the Lord told me to write the book, he said, write a book on 66 people in the Bible exactly this way, good or bad, whose life has a story and whose story can teach you a lesson.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: And Saul teaches us a lesson.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Uh anyway, God bless you.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: Thanks for watching today, and have a good day.
