Fremont Man Sentenced for Rare Manuscript Theft | Art News
A Fremont man, Jeffrey Ying, just got sentenced to a year in federal prison for stealing rare, priceless Chinese manuscripts from UCLA’s library — a heist spanning seven months where he swapped real artifacts for fake copies and even traveled to China while pulling it off. Authorities uncovered his scheme through fake IDs and dummy books, leading to a dramatic FBI investigation. Restitution remains pending, but the prison time is final — a chilling reminder of how far some will go for historical treasures.
