- 0:01They told him he had five good years left.
- 0:04That was 15 years ago. He's still standing, still
- 0:08speaking, still living. This is living with Parkinson's,
- 0:12The good, the bad, and the reality.

- 0:18incurable and you fight back anyway.
- 0:21Hosted by Bryce Perry, diagnosed at 4015.
- 0:25Years into the battle, This is the truth behind the tremor.
- 0:29Let's begin you. Ever had one of those days where
- 0:33Parkinson's throws you a curveball and the only option is
- 0:37to laugh or lose your mind? Well, I sure have, and today I'm
- 0:41going to dive into the real raw stories and the creative
- 0:44solutions that actually get us through the tough days.
- 0:47From the epic fails to the surprising winds, you'll hear
- 0:49moments from my own life and from people just like you.
- 0:52So stick around because what you hear today could change your
- 0:55whole week. Well, welcome back to the
- 0:59channel, everyone. I want to thank my loyal viewers
- 1:01for coming back. And if you're new here, I'm
- 1:03Bryce and this is living with Parkinson's, the good, the bad,
- 1:05and the reality. And here it's all about real
- 1:08talk, real support, and yes, a good dose of laughter about life
- 1:11with Parkinson's. This channel is a place for
- 1:13anyone, whether you're living with Parkinson's, you're caring
- 1:16for somebody, or you just want to understand what it's really
- 1:18like. And remember, your stories are
- 1:21the heart of this community. So I just, I encourage you to
- 1:24jump in when you can and, and let's just jump into this one
- 1:27today. I want to start with a classic
- 1:29Parkinson's moment for my own life.
- 1:31OK, so picture this. It's a regular morning.
- 1:33I'm feeling pretty confident. I got my jacket on, keys in
- 1:35hand, and I remembered my phone. Victory music is in my head.
- 1:42And then I realized I forgot my wallet.
- 1:44So I go to get back. I go back to get it, and as soon
- 1:46as I bend down, boom, Tremor City.
- 1:48I dropped the wallet, I dropped the keys, and my phone bounces
- 1:52under the couch just for good measure.
- 1:55And that's when, in my head, I cue the circus music.
- 1:57But here's the truth. Five years ago, this would have
- 2:00ruined my day. I might have skipped going out.
- 2:02And now I just laugh. I snap a mental picture, and I
- 2:06keep rolling. Because Parkinson's forces you
- 2:08to become a professional at rolling with the punches.
- 2:11And who can relate to that, right?
- 2:13But honestly, it's not just about the clumsy moments.
- 2:16Sometimes Parkinson's delivers little victories that feel huge.
- 2:20Like last month, I managed to button a stubborn shirt all by
- 2:24myself for the first time in ages.
- 2:26It took about four minutes and a fair bit of my of mumbling under
- 2:29my breath and a few probably BB beep words, but when I finally
- 2:34did it, I practically gave myself a standing ovation.
- 2:37It's the little things, right? It's these little things that we
- 2:39can, we can kind of celebrate to make ourselves feel better.
- 2:42And I'll never forget the time at a grocery store when my hand
- 2:47was shaking so much that I could barely hold my debit card and
- 2:50the cashier asked if I was nervous.
- 2:52And I just smiled and said, Nope, I'm just, Nope.
- 2:55Just my Parkinson's getting a head start on the weekend.
- 2:59And instead of embarrassment, we had a real conversation about
- 3:01the disease. And by the end, the person
- 3:03behind me in line said thanks for educating us.
- 3:05Sometimes when you're open, you give others permission to be
- 3:08open too. And that was a real lesson to
- 3:10me. And it was a real, it was a real
- 3:11aha moment for me. Now, it's not just my stories
- 3:15that matter. Let's hear from some of you.
- 3:17So I pulled some of real stories, you know, out of the
- 3:19comments and DMS and, and I'm going to share a couple of them
- 3:22'cause I think they're, they're amazing.
- 3:24So Janet from Ontario shared this.
- 3:26Last week. I tried to make tea.
- 3:28By the time the kettle boiled, I'd already forgotten why I was
- 3:31in the kitchen twice. Eventually I made coffee
- 3:35instead. Guess you just go with the flow.
- 3:37And you know what, Janet? You nailed it.
- 3:39That's Parkinson's humor at the best, and that's probably your
- 3:44mantra for a living with Parkinson's.
- 3:46Sometimes we just go with the flow or you not just sometimes
- 3:49you just have to go with the flow.
- 3:51So thanks, Janet, I really appreciate that.
- 3:53And how about this one, this one from Sarah in BC?
- 3:56My biggest win last week is I made it through a yoga class
- 3:59without falling. And when I did wobble, the group
- 4:02joined in for balance practice. I've never felt so included.
- 4:06I love this. Sometimes it's not just about
- 4:08staying upright, right? It's about staying connected.
- 4:11And I just love that story. So thank you.
- 4:13Thank you, thank you so much. So much There.
- 4:15That was that was encouraging to me.
- 4:18How about Mike from Iowa? I tried Bryce's sticky note
- 4:22hack, but my dog ate three of them and now he's the most
- 4:25organized pup in the neighborhood.
- 4:27MM. If your dog starts taking your
- 4:30meds on time, then you need to let us know.
- 4:32Meds on time, every time, even for the dog.
- 4:35So thanks, Mike, I got a real kick out of that.
- 4:37That was awesome. And you know, here's one from
- 4:39Lisa in Florida. My grandkids help me set
- 4:42reminders on my phone. Except now.
- 4:45Except now my phone tells me to dance like no one's watching at
- 4:483:00 PM every day. Who needs medication when you've
- 4:51got grandkids? What an incredible story.
- 4:55I mean, it's funny, but that's awesome, right?
- 4:57It's just totally awesome. And if you've got a, a story,
- 4:59you know, funny, frustrating or inspiring, drop it in the
- 5:02comments below. You never know who you're going
- 5:04to encourage today. You just never know.
- 5:07OK, now let's get practical. Now let's talk practical
- 5:10solutions. Like over the years, I've
- 5:12collected a whole tool kit, right?
- 5:14Some ideas from doctors and some from my friends and some from
- 5:17good old fashioned trial and error.
- 5:19And let's break it down, OK? And this is just some things
- 5:22that that you need to really think about.
- 5:24One of the things that I do is #1 this is a sticky note system.
- 5:27And we heard about, I think it was Mike, was it Mike's dog
- 5:30that, that loves the sticky note system?
- 5:32And, and, but let's break what down the sticky breakdown, what
- 5:35the sticky system is. And I have more sticky notes
- 5:38than a stationary store, to be honest.
- 5:39So here's how you use them. Red sticky notes, medication
- 5:42reminders always on the fridge or the coffee maker.
- 5:45Blue sticky notes appointments or things that I need to tell
- 5:48Carmen. And yellow sticky notes are pep
- 5:50talks to myself. Like you've got this.
- 5:52Or remember, coffee first, question later.
- 5:57And if you run out of sticky notes, cereal boxes, napkins,
- 5:59and even bathroom mirror will do.
- 6:01And I apologize to Carmen in advance for all of those things
- 6:04that I write on or do. True story because once Carmen
- 6:08found a note on her shampoo bottle.
- 6:10Don't forget to hug Bryce today because you know Bryce has
- 6:13always got his cuteness rolling in heisting.
- 6:16But anyway, and another the other tip of the other set of
- 6:21tips and things that I'm going to talk to you about and
- 6:23remember is alarms. Alarms for everything, meds,
- 6:27stretching, water, you name it. My tip, assign each alarm a
- 6:31different sound. So when I have the Tiger plays
- 6:34at noon, I know it's time for my midday pill.
- 6:37Not a workout for tech folks, tech folks, folks for tech
- 6:42folks, you'd like to maybe try the there's an app called
- 6:46Metasafe. And this isn't sponsored a video
- 6:48or anything, but it tracks doses and it gives nudges if you miss
- 6:51and it even lets you, your loved ones know if you forget.
- 6:53And you can try that. I'm not into that, but because I
- 6:57don't like my loved ones to get nudges every time I miss because
- 7:00they're, Oh my God, they think worry too much about it.
- 7:01But anyway, if you if you if that's something you need, make
- 7:04sure you check it out. And how about for low tech days?
- 7:08All right, how about this? Use a cheap digital kitchen
- 7:11timer or even a friendly neighbor as a reminder buddy.
- 7:15You know, just whatever it is you have or use, just put it to
- 7:18your, you know to use it to your advantage, right?
- 7:21Cheap little kitchen digital timers, easy, perfect, amazing.
- 7:26And then don't forget also the the pill timer cat bottle or
- 7:29pill timer bottle cap. I always mess that up.
- 7:34And again, I have some links in the descriptions, the
- 7:36descriptions below to for all the little things I use and feel
- 7:40free to to help yourself and see what I use.
- 7:42Anyway, here's a big one, the five minute reset rule.
- 7:46OK, so this is what I do when I feel overwhelmed or frustrated
- 7:50or like I'm just about to lose it.
- 7:52Here's my 51 ready number one. I pause.
- 7:55OK, I sit down. I take 5 deep breaths and then I
- 8:01remind myself reset is not retreat right?
- 8:05It's regroup and get back in the game.
- 8:08And sometimes I literally say out loud, OK, body, we're doing
- 8:13this together, whether you like it or not, we're doing this
- 8:16together. And I just kind of take that
- 8:18moment to reset. And that's 5 minute reset rule.
- 8:22And it's very important to sit down, pull yourself out of what
- 8:24you're into. So, and again, if you're at the
- 8:26office or you're somewhere like that, get out of the stressors
- 8:29that are around you. So if you have to go sit down in
- 8:31the, in the living room because something's going on in the
- 8:33bedroom, or if you're at work and you have to go sit down in
- 8:35another office or whatever, whatever it is, kind of move
- 8:37away from what's stressing you out and what's feeling making
- 8:39you feel overwhelmed. And just take that 5 minutes and
- 8:42breathe. It's like a meditation, like
- 8:44breathe, think it through, you know, remind yourself this is
- 8:47just a minute in time. It's not, it's not, it's not the
- 8:50end of the world, OK? It's not the end of the world.
- 8:53And just try that. So I, I, I challenge you to try
- 8:55that 5 minute, that 5 minute, you know, rule.
- 8:59OK, here's another thing that I've seen a lot of people use is
- 9:03a magnetic whiteboard calendar, right?
- 9:06So if sticky notes aren't your thing, a magnetic whiteboard on
- 9:08the fridge works wonders, right? I've seen people use it for
- 9:11daily routine routines like their meds at 7, three and 11.
- 9:14They can write it down and appointments or what's for
- 9:17dinner. And I would love that one, you
- 9:19know, so I don't have to keep asking Carmen five times or I
- 9:22don't have to keep saying over and over again, what's for
- 9:24dinner, What's for dinner? And I don't know what I want for
- 9:27dinner. Does anybody like that out
- 9:28there? I mean, actually, when I took
- 9:30speech therapy, you had to come up with 10 statements that you
- 9:33would say every day. And I was trying to think of
- 9:35these 10, what 10 statements do I say every single day?
- 9:38And I was like, I guess I say, I love you, you know, good
- 9:41morning, goodnight. And I and I was struggling to
- 9:45find 10 and I thought, and then it my, and one popped in my
- 9:47head. It was like, I don't know what I
- 9:49want for dinner tonight. So I'm like, holy smokes.
- 9:51Anyway. But anyway, when you do that
- 9:54with that magnet board and then it's visual, it's simple, and
- 9:58everyone in the house sees it, so you'll be accountable, right?
- 10:02And then there's that accountability buddy system, you
- 10:05know, enlist a friend or partner or care partner or a family
- 10:08member to check in once a day. And it can be simple as, you
- 10:11know, a daily meds check, right text or a funny meme when you
- 10:15hit a goal, right. And I, I do that when, when
- 10:17Carmen's not around, I'll send her a thing.
- 10:20Took my meds, you know, took my meds.
- 10:21And so it's sort of, you know, it's just sort of a way to keep
- 10:25accountable. And then if they don't hear from
- 10:26you that day, they might they're coming back to you.
- 10:28Hey, are you on schedule? Are you taking your meds?
- 10:30It's just something that that that's a little hack that could
- 10:33be easy. And, and here's a shout out to
- 10:35my buddy Brian. And he's the king of sending
- 10:38reminders disguised at jokes. So hey, Brian, and if you don't
- 10:41know about Brian, then you should check out our podcast
- 10:46Life in Motion, the Parkinson podcast.
- 10:47It's Sundays at noon, noon, Eastern Time, so you can check
- 10:51that out. Anyway, how about this?
- 10:55Here are some quick fire hacks that we got from viewers because
- 10:58these are amazing, right? So here it is.
- 11:00Susan puts her pill bottle in her shoe at night because I
- 11:02never leave home without my shoes.
- 11:04Therefore she never forgets her pill bottle.
- 11:06MM tapes reminders to a steering wheel.
- 11:10Janet said if she can't find motivation, she borrows someone
- 11:13else's for the day. Doug in Winnipeg said set, set
- 11:17your hardest task first thing before you have time to talk
- 11:20yourself out of it. And I used to have an old saying
- 11:22back in the the corporate days was eat that frog, right?
- 11:25Eat that frog. So the thing that you want, that
- 11:27thing that you are most don't want to do that day, the biggest
- 11:30thing, do it first, the hardest task 1st and get it out of the
- 11:33way. And therefore you'll actually
- 11:35get it done right. Hey, quick pause.
- 11:40If you're getting value from these tips and these stories and

- 11:57So hit subscribe and let's keep this community growing.
- 12:01OK, now let's answer a couple of the most most asked questions.
- 12:06And here's one from a viewer. How do you handle afternoon
- 12:09fatigue? And this is a big, big, big
- 12:11question. Well, I schedule most of my
- 12:13important stuff in the morning. This is how it does.
- 12:15I roll. I always keep water close.
- 12:17And yes, sometimes I take a power recline after lunch.
- 12:20No guilt. If I need to nap, I nap.
- 12:23And also if I push too hard and I I pay for it later.
- 12:27So I'm learning to listen to my body's early warning signs.
- 12:31And I would suggest that you do as well.
- 12:33And if you've got a good hack or a good, you know, a good hack or
- 12:37a good tool or a good tip, make sure you leave it in the
- 12:39comments below. And don't forget I read.
- 12:40I read and I respond to every single one.
- 12:42So whether it's even a hey or a high, I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm right
- 12:46back at you. OK, here's another one that came
- 12:48in. How do you keep your spirits up
- 12:50on hard days? That's a tough one, right?
- 12:54That's really tough. Some days are really, really
- 12:55tough with Parkinson's. But for me, music helps.
- 12:58You know, sometimes I blast the 80s, right?
- 13:00The 80s hits something, something.
- 13:02And sometimes it's just something mellow.
- 13:05I text a friend, I step outside or I just focus on one thing I
- 13:08can do, no matter how small. And on a really, really bad day,
- 13:12well, guess what? I let myself have it.
- 13:16No shame in having a grumpy day name now and then.
- 13:20I actually have a video, one of the other episodes of the
- 13:23podcast. You should check it out.
- 13:24And it's called Let Me Have a Bad Day.
- 13:27So just sometimes there's days that you have to have a bad day
- 13:30and and it's what it's OK to have a bad day and you shouldn't
- 13:33have to feel super grumpy or super guilty about that at all.
- 13:37OK, here's a question. What do you wish you'd known at
- 13:40diagnosis? Do you have all day?
- 13:46Well, probably the number one thing is that asking for help
- 13:49isn't a weakness. That's the PD community.
- 13:52It's full of people who understand and it's OK to grieve
- 13:54what you've lost. So even while you're grateful
- 13:57for what remains, right? So you'd be grateful for what
- 14:00I've left, but you know, it's, it's, it's OK.
- 14:03It's OK to grieve what, what I've lost.
- 14:04But you know, that's why this PD community is so, is so amazing.
- 14:09And, and my biggest advice would be to reach out for help.
- 14:12Always, always, always, always and quick before it gets too
- 14:15much, before it festers, right? So here's OK, quickly.
- 14:22Here's things that I wish I knew sooner.
- 14:25It's OK to grieve right the the old you and to look forward to
- 14:28the new you. OK, Tell your friends and family
- 14:32early because they'll surprise you with support.
- 14:35Write down questions for your doctor ahead of time.
- 14:38Celebrate every single small win, every single small win.
- 14:41The world's best Parkinson Party might just be getting your socks
- 14:44on by yourself. And those are some of the
- 14:46really, really quick ones. But I want to end on some hope.
- 14:50OK, so a friend of mine just completed their first
- 14:55fundraising walk. And I think it was like 10
- 14:58kilometres. It was something that that that
- 15:00she thought was going to be like impossible two years ago when
- 15:02she got diagnosed. There's like, there's no way I'm
- 15:04going to be able to run or walk 10 kilometres.
- 15:08And she knocked it out of the park.
- 15:11So amazing, right? Like, this is awesome to just
- 15:14stretch yourself. Don't ever limit yourself
- 15:17because of Parkinson's at all. How about this?
- 15:20You know, there are more clinical trials and more new
- 15:22treatments on the horizon than ever before.
- 15:24Progress isn't always fast, but it's real.
- 15:27And if you're struggling today, I want you to remember
- 15:29something. Small wins count.
- 15:30Small days just getting out of the out of bed, right?
- 15:34Some days, some days just getting out of bed is enough.
- 15:37If you need a break, take it. And if you got a big win, a big,
- 15:41big or small, share it below. We celebrate them all here.
- 15:45We really, really do and I want to thank you for spending this
- 15:48time with me. Every story shared and every
- 15:51solution tried brings us all one step closer to a brighter
- 15:54future. And if you haven't already, hit

- 16:02support, laughs and live chats. All right, drop your win of the
- 16:06week, your tip or just hello in the comments.
- 16:08I read everyone and your voice truly matters here.
- 16:13And if you made it this far, this is your Bryceism of the day
- 16:16of this episode. Ready for it?
- 16:19With Parkinson's, every day is a team sport.
- 16:22Some days you're the coach, some days, some days you're the water
- 16:26boy. But you're always part of the
- 16:28game. I like that.
- 16:33I really like that. You go and you have a great day.
- 16:35Do life today. Parkinson's may be part of your
