- 0:00This is The Catholic Current, with Father Robert Metaig.
- 0:04It seems to me the adults have left the room, in terms of the sin, and you know the old
- 0:09Jesuit model for missionaries was, enter through their door, lead them through yours.
- 0:13Part two hasn't happened, though, has it?
- 0:15No, but the way that they're going at this, you know, you can't spell sin on it without
- 0:19sin, I guess.
- 0:20I mean, you could, but it doesn't look like the Vatican wants to.
- 0:23It's not surprising that they're asking for things that are either A, trendy, or B, might
- 0:28offer some hope of being relieved from their very terrible pain.
- 0:32Praised be Jesus Christ, this is Father Robert Metaig of the Society of Jesus, your daily
- 0:37host for The Catholic Current, where we bring Christ to the world, and the world to Christ.
- 0:41You're listening to us from the station of La Crosse Studios, your local radio station,
- 0:44and the iCatholic Radio mobile app, where we proclaim the fullness of truth with clarity
- 0:49and charity.
- 0:50As always, let's start with prayer.
- 0:52In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
- 0:55Almighty God, through the intercession of St. Ignatius Loyola, we ask that you pour
- 0:58forth your Holy Spirit upon us, a spirit of discernment that might hear your voice and
- 1:02obey your command.
- 1:03In the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, amen.
- 1:06Hey, friends, we know that one of the hot words in Catholic life these days is synodality,
- 1:13synodaling, being a synodal church, a new way of being church, and my goodness, there's
- 1:18a whole lot of listening.
- 1:21And of course, whenever bureaucracies are involved, there's a whole lot of paperwork.
- 1:25And we've been talking about the final report of Synodal Working Group No. 9, and here's
- 1:31the title of their final study.
- 1:34It's called Theological Criteria and Synodal Methodologies for Shared Discernment of Emerging
- 1:39Doctrinal, Pastoral, and Ethical Issues.
- 1:42I've talked about that already.
- 1:44We're going to be talking about it again.
- 1:45I want to focus on something in particular.
- 1:47There's a very fine Catholic apostolate called Courage and its auxiliary group, and Courage,
- 1:54and it serves people who experience same-sex attraction or gender dysphoria.
- 2:01I know the founder, Fr. John Harvey, the late great Fr. Harvey.
- 2:05I've worked with these folks.
- 2:07I've spoken at their meetings.
- 2:10They are an authentically Catholic apostolate, and what was said in the Synodal Working Group
- 2:16about Report Courage, they really threw some mud at Courage, and I said, the folks from
- 2:21Courage International, they need to speak up for themselves.
- 2:24So we're doing that right now.
- 2:26We have with us the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Courage International, Fr.
- 2:31Kyle Schnippel.
- 2:32Welcome to The Catholic Current.
- 2:33Thank you.
- 2:34It's good to be back.
- 2:35Fr.
- 2:36Kyle, it seems to me that Courage didn't get a fair shake.
- 2:39First of all, no one from your organization was invited to speak, and no one was consulted
- 2:46about what was said about your organization.
- 2:48Is that correct?
- 2:49Correct.
- 2:50Well, some of our members might have been involved in those really local parish-based
- 2:54Synod meetings that happened long ago.
- 2:57As far as at the main Synod that happened in Rome, none of our official leadership was
- 3:03invited to speak.
- 3:04No one from our organization was invited to be there, as were some other organizations,
- 3:09I'll say.
- 3:11Right.
- 3:12So it seems to me that as a matter of justice, and given the very public statements about
- 3:17enthusiasm for listening, you all weren't heard.
- 3:21You were talked about, but you also weren't given a chance to respond, which strikes me
- 3:26as unjust.
- 3:28So there were a couple of hot words thrown around in there that I want to begin to address.
- 3:33And one is reparative therapy.
- 3:35And in my experience, when talking about same-sex attraction, if you talk about reparative therapy,
- 3:42people become very animated.
- 3:44Can you explain what that is and whether courage is involved in it?
- 3:48Reparative therapy, in a sense, is like if you go through these certain steps of psychological
- 3:55therapy, of prayer, of whatever it is, then there's different groups outlining different
- 4:01things that if you go through these steps, then your same-sex attraction will go away,
- 4:07is one kind of a reparative therapy.
- 4:09It's repairing the attraction, I think, is what they would claim to be.
- 4:15Courage, while maybe early on in our history, might have, because even in the Catechism,
- 4:21it says the psychological genesis of same-sex attraction isn't really understood.
- 4:25It wasn't understood when the Catechism was written, when courage was first found.
- 4:28It's still not terribly well understood now.
- 4:31So courage doesn't support reparative therapy.
- 4:35We support conversion.
- 4:37Conversion towards Jesus is always the end goal of the Christian life, right?
- 4:42So that's the conversion we support.
- 4:46Courage isn't about if you go through these steps, then your gayness will go away.
- 4:52We've never been about that.
- 4:53Right.
- 4:54Because I know that sometimes folks in certain social groups kind of wink-wink, nudge-nudge,
- 4:59and, oh, you know what they're like.
- 5:02They want you to just pray the gay away, tee-hee-hee.
- 5:05But you're right.
- 5:06It is conversion to Christ, and conversion to Christ demands of absolutely everyone at
- 5:13all times, in every circumstance, an unbreakable commitment to chastity.
- 5:20And chastity is right use of your sexuality according to your state in life, and embedded
- 5:27in that is an exclusively heterosexual, monogamous, unbreakable view of the bond of marriage.
- 5:36And it seems to me that that's what is at stake.
- 5:40So the folks who wrote the Synodal Report, people who have been detractors of Fr. Harvey
- 5:46and courage for a good number of years, they seem to be rather mute, if not coy, about
- 5:54the universal call to chastity.
- 5:56Is that just my cynical eye?
- 5:57Am I looking in the wrong places?
- 5:59Or have you noticed that, too?
- 6:01I mean, based on the evidence that you see in the public sphere, I would say I would
- 6:08wholeheartedly agree with that statement, that they've been rather coy about the call
- 6:12to chastity and the freedom that the call to chastity entails, right?
- 6:18Like the end goal of that call to chastity is a deeper, integrated life, which brings
- 6:23us freedom in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- 6:25And so if you're living the life of sin, you're never going to have that freedom.
- 6:29Right.
- 6:30Now, I think part of the objection, I would imagine, is to say that acting on the same-sex
- 6:37attraction is by its very nature sinful.
- 6:41Isn't that really what's being contested right now?
- 6:45And we see that in the Working Document No. 9, etc., that we're going to have new insights,
- 6:52and these are the emerging issues.
- 6:53And I read the testimony of the folks whose testimony was in the appendices of the report,
- 6:59and it seems that, gosh, we've been misunderstanding human sexuality for all these centuries and
- 7:06millennia now, and we've got these astonishing new insights that's actually going to make
- 7:13same-sex acts somehow morally okay.
- 7:18Is that part of what's at issue here in current discussions?
- 7:22It seems like that's the issue, yeah, that there are agents within the church who want
- 7:26to promote that marriage.
- 7:29They want to promote a redefinition of marriage to two persons, absent that it's a male and
- 7:34a female.
- 7:35They want to redefine that marriage.
- 7:38One of the ends of marriage is procreation, is the generation of life.
- 7:45And no matter how hard you work, two men or two women cannot generate life together in
- 7:49the same way that a man and a woman can.
- 7:52Right, and it does seem to be rather obvious, and I published something in a Catholic World
- 7:58Report three years ago, we're going to put in the show notes, that says, before you start
- 8:02tinkering with philosophy and theology, there's some fundamental biology involved.
- 8:07Again, Father Harvey, who is a happy warrior and a great man, and the founder of Courage
- 8:12International, he said, if you understand human bodies and how they work, regardless
- 8:18of preferences, there really is only one sexual orientation, and that's heterosexual.
- 8:23And it's very obvious that male and female were made for each other, and they were made
- 8:27for the begetting of children.
- 8:30And we seem to be committed absolutely to obscuring that.
- 8:37As you read that report, I have to believe that your heart sank a bit, because it's got
- 8:44to be bad for the morale of your members.
- 8:46I mean, I have people at Courage International who were really heroic in their choice to
- 8:52convert to Christ, to acquire virtue, to live a sacramental life, to live a chaste life.
- 9:00It seems to me that all those heroic people were discounted in that document.
- 9:06Is that a fair assessment?
- 9:07Yes, and I think that's the view that Courage has taken of this, is like, our voice of heroic
- 9:15union of experience to Christ on the cross that we see day to day in our members was
- 9:22not included in this report.
- 9:24And instead, what was included in this report was like, was a dissing of that heroic striving
- 9:30for holiness.
- 9:32And not only a dissing, but like, really just like, flushing it down the toilet and saying
- 9:36that's not, the path of courage is not only, you know, it is like, is backwards, right?
- 9:44You know, it's like, that is what came across in this report, that the path of courage is
- 9:49imprisoning and is not authentic, is not freeing.
- 9:54Whereas this expression, you know, the report holds up this expression of same-sex partnerships
- 10:00is really, truly freeing.
- 10:01And we know, we know that that's been a lie, right?
- 10:05We've already talked about that, that that's the lie that the devil wants to sew into the
- 10:10life of the Church in this day and age.
- 10:13Right.
- 10:14It made me sad for very many reasons.
- 10:16You know, very often on the air I speak of the senior Catholic cadres, of the people
- 10:19who should really know better club.
- 10:21And that certainly includes the people who signed off on this document.
- 10:26I know there's some distribution and disputation about, oh, this is just a working document,
- 10:32we had nothing to do with it.
- 10:34Or, no, no, this has become wholly writ.
- 10:37But I think anyone with not only a familiarity with what the Church has always taught, but
- 10:42a commitment to that would say, hey, this report on it, at its best, is misleading and
- 10:50is going to besmirch the honor of people who are striving to answer Christ's universal
- 10:56call to chastity.
- 10:57Friends, when we come back, we're going to continue our conversation with Father Kyle.

- 12:55My guest today, a returning guest, is Fr. Kyle Schnippel.
- 12:58He's Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Courage Apostolate,
- 13:02a Catholic apostolate that serves people who experience same-sex attraction and gender dysphoria.
- 13:08Father, in this Synodal Study Group report, Courage is mentioned by name.
- 13:16And like I said, I've worked with Courage for years.
- 13:19I knew Fr. Harvey, and a couple of things made me bristle.
- 13:24One of the people given testimony who tried out Courage and had an unsatisfactory experience
- 13:31said the meetings are secretive and hidden, and that the people there were lonely, hopeless, and often depressed.
- 13:41And I said, gosh, it makes it sound like this is Scientology or some sort of a cult,
- 13:47and you're all reading L. Ron Hubbard together.
- 13:49Help me to understand this.
- 13:51Well, of course our meetings are secret because we want to protect the anonymity of our members.
- 13:57And the integrity of the group as well, so that the way to get into a Courage meeting
- 14:04is to have an initial conversation with the Courage chaplain, the local Courage chaplain,
- 14:09because A, he wants to make sure, which is a priest, maybe a permanent deacon,
- 14:14he wants to make sure that you are coming to Courage for the right reasons,
- 14:18that here are the five goals of chastity, of prayer, of support, of fellowship, of good example role model,
- 14:25that you want to live up to those five goals to the best of your ability at the state of life that you're in
- 14:32while working towards embracing those goals at an ever higher level.
- 14:37And so we don't want someone to come into a Courage chapter that's, A, prowling and looking for a date,
- 14:43because that would destroy the chapter.
- 14:46Sure, of course.
- 14:48We don't want people to come into Courage chapters that have a political agenda,
- 14:53because we're not a political action committee, we're not an advocacy group,
- 14:57we're a companionship group, we're a group that walks with persons with this experience.
- 15:02So we don't list where meetings are held or the time that they're held,
- 15:07we list the chaplain because we want to protect the members themselves in walking towards Jesus.
- 15:15And I really, that comment about they're hopeless and they're alone, is there a loneliness?
- 15:21Yes, there is an inner loneliness because our hearts are restless until they rest in you, oh Lord, right?
- 15:26St. Augustine's great line.
- 15:28But what I see in the groups that I work with is that this is the first time that men in particular
- 15:35have these disinterested friendships that's called for in the catechism.
- 15:40And through those friendships, they find like a companionship towards Jesus in the healthiest way possible
- 15:48and in a way that I've not seen, like walking with others that you just don't see.
- 15:54And so is there loneliness?
- 15:56Like I think in that first couple times that new members come into a Courage meeting,
- 16:03yeah, they may experience that, but they also experience like this deep,
- 16:07they start to experience this deeper sense of friendship that is oriented towards Jesus,
- 16:12walking side by side towards Jesus, right?
- 16:15And I think that's the fulfillment of the longing that we have at the deep recesses of our hearts.
- 16:20Of course, I mean, ultimately it's a very human thing.
- 16:24I mean, it goes right back to Augustine,
- 16:26you made us for yourself, oh Lord, our hearts are restless until they rest in thee.
- 16:30And I spent a good number of years working for college students,
- 16:33and I said you won't be able to approach friendships or relationships of any kind
- 16:39with peace and freedom to the degree that God intends
- 16:43unless and until you give Christ every opportunity to be the first satisfaction of your heart.
- 16:51And then you can approach people with abundance and generosity
- 16:57rather than self-seeking or craving or asking people to fill an interior emptiness that only God can fill.
- 17:07And likewise, the call to chastity is universal because fallen human nature is imperious,
- 17:14it's impulsive, and to free people from that is a good thing.
- 17:21It's a gospel mandate to preach good news to the poor,
- 17:24to set the captives free.
- 17:27I often ask this, how did we get here, Father?
- 17:31You and I are talking about the universal call to chastity,
- 17:36including people experiencing same-sex attraction.
- 17:39How is it that that position has ended up on the defensive?
- 17:43Because it's hard.
- 17:44Really, I think that's the reality of it.
- 17:47It's that because it's hard.
- 17:50What was the line?
- 17:51It's not that Christianity has been tried and found wanting.
- 17:55It's been found difficult and therefore not strong.
- 17:58Right, that's Chesterton.
- 18:00And it's hard.
- 18:02I fully embrace that it's a hard life.
- 18:05The life of the priesthood is hard.
- 18:08You and I can testify to that.
- 18:10There are days where it's very difficult.
- 18:13But yet, when we embrace the cross and the difficulty of the cross,
- 18:17we also find grace, we find purpose,
- 18:20we find a depth of meaning that you cannot find in any other way,
- 18:24sense, way, shape, or form.
- 18:26Right, and I think that I've been rereading some old Fulton Sheen
- 18:31recently, and stuff from the 20s and the 30s and the 40s.
- 18:35And in some ways, he was prescient,
- 18:38and he said that what's taking place in the West
- 18:42is to preach Christ without the cross.
- 18:46And there's no redemption there.
- 18:49There's the reduction of Christ to kind of our spiritual mascot
- 18:54for our political cause.
- 18:56And C.S. Lewis saw this too, what he called, you know,
- 18:58Christianity and, you know, Christianity in the present crisis,
- 19:02Christianity and spelling reform.
- 19:04So we have our a-priority political commitment,
- 19:07and then Christ comes along to approve that.
- 19:12So Christ is no longer our meaning and our measure,
- 19:16our standard and our king,
- 19:18but actually he's a buddy who gives validation to what we've chosen.
- 19:24I find that, well, it's monstrous.
- 19:28Let me shift a little bit.
- 19:29Let me go back to courage.
- 19:30I'll get off my soapbox here.
- 19:33I have to imagine that there were members of Courage International
- 19:38who read those reports, heard those things.
- 19:41That must have landed hard for them, didn't it?
- 19:44What was their response?
- 19:46You know, for so many of our members, there's this inner fatherhood.
- 19:52They have difficult relationships with their dads
- 19:54because their dads wanted something that these members,
- 19:57these men couldn't provide.
- 19:59And so, like, they're constantly looking for, like,
- 20:02am I accepted by my father?
- 20:04And so then that gets transferred to the courage chaplain
- 20:07because, A, that's why he's a priest, right?
- 20:09But then that gets transferred to the church,
- 20:11and we look for this, like, this inner, like,
- 20:15does the church see my suffering?
- 20:17Does the church see my struggle?
- 20:18Does the church see my experience?
- 20:20Does the church see me, right?
- 20:23And what I think came across in this report to them
- 20:26is that the church doesn't see me.
- 20:28I'm not of value to the church,
- 20:30whereas courage is trying to say, no, you're actually,
- 20:33you're at the heart of who the church is
- 20:35and who the church cares about.
- 20:37And your experience of the cross of Christ
- 20:40actually drives forward the church, right?
- 20:43So, like, with St. Paul, we can say, you know, like,
- 20:46I make up for what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ
- 20:48with my own sufferings, right?
- 20:50When we embrace that call of suffering,
- 20:52the church moves forward, you know, right?
- 20:55And so here's, I think, courage can be, like,
- 20:58an inner heartbeat of the church,
- 21:00and that was not acknowledged in this report,
- 21:03and I think that was so demoralizing to our members.
- 21:06I'm not even worth being mentioned or seen in this report.
- 21:10Right, and, you know, I mean, I know for sure
- 21:13that there are members, again, who made sacrifices,
- 21:17who decided to walk the hard road and carry the cross
- 21:23and live the demands of chastity.
- 21:25And you know what, if you're a human being
- 21:27and you're choosing to be chased by Christ's standards,
- 21:30there's going to be a cross,
- 21:31and there's going to be the experience of loneliness,
- 21:35and that is absolutely unavoidable in this valley of tears.
- 21:39And then there's also freedom, joy, and peace
- 21:41for those who persevere.
- 21:43It seemed to me that those struggles just don't count,
- 21:50that your membership were suckers,
- 21:52that they could have given in and joined the party
- 21:57a long time ago.
- 21:59That's how I imagine folks read that.
- 22:02Was that the experience of your membership at all,
- 22:04that they were just being dismissed as suckers,
- 22:07that all their effort was wasted?
- 22:09Yes, yes.
- 22:11Again, time and time again, I think that was just
- 22:15this whole experience of synodalities,
- 22:19that's been their experience of this.
- 22:21So it just re-hits those same wounds
- 22:25that they've had in their journey with Christ
- 22:28and their journey with the church time and time again.
- 22:30And I think that's what made me angry
- 22:34when I read this report.
- 22:36It's hitting those same wounds time and time again
- 22:39for our members who are heroic,
- 22:43and their voice is again not being brought forward.
- 22:47Right.
- 22:48And for all the talk about listening,
- 22:52there is, it seems that just an animal farm,
- 22:57all animals are equal, some are more equal than others.
- 23:00And in my observation in the synodal process,
- 23:04everybody gets listened to, not really,
- 23:07but some people get more listened to than others.
- 23:14It makes me sad because there are,
- 23:19I mean, I know members of Courage International.
- 23:22Their stories are inspiring.
- 23:25They can move you to tears.
- 23:27They can move you to sing the Te Deum.
- 23:30I'm going to ask you to speculate,
- 23:31we've only got about a minute and a half left here
- 23:33in this segment.
- 23:34I'm going to ask you to speculate.
- 23:35Why weren't Courage members included?
- 23:38Why wasn't the leadership of Courage consulted?
- 23:41It seems that the ear of the Holy Father,
- 23:44the previous Holy Father in particular,
- 23:46was dominated by our opponents, really.
- 23:49And I think that voice drownded out any voice
- 23:53that we attempted to contribute by Courage
- 23:58or friends of Courage or even proponents of Courage
- 24:02among the bishops, cardinals, and others who know us
- 24:06and support us, their voices were just drowned out
- 24:09by other voices that had a closer ear to the Holy Father,
- 24:13it seems like.
- 24:14Well, yeah.
- 24:15I mean, I've always said, you know,
- 24:17as soon as you involve humans,
- 24:19there's going to be disappointments
- 24:21and there's going to be frustration, etc., etc.
- 24:24So all that is true.
- 24:26You know, the synodal process, among other things,
- 24:28is certainly a human process.
- 24:31And I really do hope that if we're going to continue
- 24:35down this path, if, you know,
- 24:37the rallying cry is going to be inclusion
- 24:40and totos, totos, totos,
- 24:42that it actually include people who have chosen
- 24:47to answer Christ's universal call for chastity.
- 24:52And I want to hear the words universal call for chastity
- 24:55cross the lips of very many more people,
- 24:58including senior cadres of the people
- 25:01who should really know better club.

- 26:53My guest today, my returning guest,
- 26:55is Father Kyle Schnippel.
- 26:56He's Chairman of the Board for Courage International.
- 26:58An authentically Catholic apostolate
- 27:00for people who experience same-sex attraction
- 27:03or gender dysphoria.
- 27:05Father, I really want to set the record straight
- 27:08for Courage International.
- 27:10I've worked with this group for years.
- 27:12I've met heroic members.
- 27:14I have great respect and affection
- 27:16for its late, great founder, Father John Harvey,
- 27:19a happy warrior and a real spiritual father.
- 27:25And I know there's also an auxiliary group
- 27:27called N-Courage for family and friends of people
- 27:30who experience same-sex attraction
- 27:32and gender dysphoria.
- 27:34There are folks out there who are hurting
- 27:36that need help.
- 27:38What can Courage and N-Courage do for them?
- 27:40How does this all work?
- 27:41I think what Courage and N-Courage can do for them
- 27:44is offer them authentic pastoral accompaniment
- 27:47towards the cross.
- 27:49Especially on the N-Courage side,
- 27:51when a family member,
- 27:53when a family has a son or daughter
- 27:56who comes forward and says,
- 27:58I'm gay and you have to accept my girlfriend,
- 28:01a daughter.
- 28:03When a family member comes forward and says,
- 28:06I'm your daughter, but I want to be your son,
- 28:08that experience there is profoundly isolating.
- 28:12I don't know who I can talk to about this.
- 28:16And what Courage and N-Courage can do,
- 28:18what N-Courage in particular can do,
- 28:20is you're not alone in this experience.
- 28:23And here are other family members
- 28:25who have had that same experience
- 28:26and how they've helped walk through that.
- 28:28You can learn from their experience
- 28:30to navigate your experience.
- 28:32And Courage is the same thing.
- 28:35What I hear so often is,
- 28:37persons who come forward who have that experience
- 28:39of same-sex attraction,
- 28:40I don't want others to know that I have this
- 28:43and be involved in the church
- 28:44because they'll judge me.
- 28:46So here's a place where,
- 28:48one of my Courage members, he said,
- 28:50we all know why we're in this room,
- 28:52so we don't have to talk about it
- 28:54and we can just be friends.
- 28:56And that breaks down that isolation
- 28:58and that loneliness,
- 29:00and it breaks down that sense of,
- 29:02I'm somehow different and unloved.
- 29:04Here I'm loved because Christ has redeemed me.
- 29:07And that's on both sides of that coin
- 29:09of Courage and N-Courage.
- 29:11I'm loved, and I have a path forward
- 29:14because people see me in this experience
- 29:17and love me in this experience,
- 29:19and I know that Jesus does too.
- 29:22There is, given the current cultural climate,
- 29:25shall we say,
- 29:26there is a certain social cost, isn't there,
- 29:30for someone to say that he experiences
- 29:32same-sex attraction
- 29:34and wants to answer Christ's universal call
- 29:37to chastity.
- 29:39Many Catholic groups,
- 29:40certainly many Catholic institutions
- 29:42or communities,
- 29:43wouldn't know what to do with them.
- 29:44Is that a fair statement?
- 29:46Agreed, yeah.
- 29:47There are many Catholic groups, as you know,
- 29:49that would say,
- 29:50Oh, great, that's awesome.
- 29:51Go be who you are, right?
- 29:54Which we know is a pathway to emptiness
- 29:57because I've heard that old story so many times
- 30:00versus, that's great,
- 30:02God loves you in this experience,
- 30:04and here's a path forward with that experience
- 30:06towards Jesus and towards fulfillment.
- 30:08And that's something that
- 30:10no lie will ever be able to answer that,
- 30:15versus Christ can, right?
- 30:17Christ can, you know?
- 30:19And I come back to, like,
- 30:21one of the COURAGE members
- 30:23talked about the day his wife
- 30:25found out that he not only looks at gay,
- 30:28at pornography,
- 30:29but that he looks at gay pornography.
- 30:31And he talked about, like,
- 30:33that was my worst day.
- 30:35Like, she should have left me.
- 30:36She didn't, to her credit.
- 30:38And she said, you get the help that you need.
- 30:40And that's what led him to COURAGE.
- 30:42And he said, like, now I realize how I pick up
- 30:44this experience of the cross,
- 30:46how I find Jesus in the midst of this experience,
- 30:49is how I work out my salvation
- 30:51in fear and trembling.
- 30:52And I'm like, wow, that's such a profound statement.
- 30:54Like, here is something that seeks to isolate
- 30:57that he's now used to be united deeper to Jesus.
- 31:00And that's, I think,
- 31:02the journey of the Christian life is that, I think.
- 31:05Yes, and I, you know,
- 31:07we preach Christ crucified.
- 31:09It has to come back to that.
- 31:13And where Christ crucified is found,
- 31:15Christ risen and victorious is also found.
- 31:18And my whole Jesuit life,
- 31:20I wanted to enter into that mystery
- 31:22and lead people into that mystery as well.
- 31:24And it seems to me that, you know,
- 31:26you do you deprives people of the opportunity
- 31:30to enter into that mystery.
- 31:33And we'll be held accountable
- 31:36if we remain silent in the presence of that failure.
- 31:39So Father, suppose someone goes to a COURAGE chaplain
- 31:44and says, hey, this has been my experience.
- 31:47This is what I've been up to.
- 31:50And it's not working for me.
- 31:54Is this all that there is?
- 31:57What's the next step for someone
- 31:59who's just approached a chaplain?
- 32:01I think the next step for someone
- 32:03that comes to a COURAGE chaplain is,
- 32:05A, let's walk through the five goals.
- 32:08Where are you on the five goals?
- 32:09So the five goals are,
- 32:11the first goal is chastity.
- 32:13According to my state of life,
- 32:15as the church teaches it.
- 32:17So if I'm married,
- 32:19that means I have relations solely with my spouse.
- 32:22For everybody else,
- 32:23it's this offering of sexual desire
- 32:25towards the Lord for freedom.
- 32:27Now, the call of chastity is empowered
- 32:31by the other four goals.
- 32:33So prayer and dedication.
- 32:35What am I spiritually reading?
- 32:38How am I serving others?
- 32:40How do I frequently attend
- 32:43and avail myself of the sacraments
- 32:45of reconciliation of the Holy Eucharist?
- 32:47Do I attend Mass on a regular basis?
- 32:49Do I have a spiritual director?
- 32:51All those things that are going to support
- 32:53the spiritual development of the individual
- 32:55to be able to live that call to chastity.
- 32:57Goals three and four are together,
- 32:59fellowship and support.
- 33:01So I often think of fellowship
- 33:03as in that small Christian community
- 33:05that is present in COURAGE,
- 33:08where I can be who I am
- 33:10and people know who I am.
- 33:12And I have this fellowship
- 33:14and this sense of there's no secrets.
- 33:16There's no, you know,
- 33:18I am who I am and the Lord loves me in that
- 33:20and calls me forward.
- 33:22And that challenge of how...
- 33:24What I really admire is
- 33:28when a COURAGE member comes in
- 33:30and talks about the struggles he had
- 33:32over the last week with pornography
- 33:34or masturbation or falling to sexual sins,
- 33:37other members of COURAGE really challenge him
- 33:39to like, okay, you know that's empty.
- 33:41Let's go. What led into it?
- 33:43Because their fellowship is so strong,
- 33:46iron sharpens iron,
- 33:48and so they sharpen each other
- 33:50and they hone each other.
- 33:52And I think then when we have that
- 33:54strong base of fellowship,
- 33:56then we can be the support of the Christian community.
- 33:58We can offer support to our brothers and sisters
- 34:00who are walking towards Christ,
- 34:02whether they have that experience
- 34:04of same-sex attraction or not.
- 34:06And we just want to be a part of that Christian community.
- 34:08That's the fourth goal.
- 34:10And the fifth goal, be a good example
- 34:12of a role model.
- 34:14I think if we all strove to be an example
- 34:16of what life is like in Christ,
- 34:18and we live that out in the world,
- 34:20what would our world be like?
- 34:22And it struck me really early on
- 34:24that the five goals of COURAGE
- 34:26are a great pathway
- 34:29for the Christian life,
- 34:31whether or not you have the experience
- 34:33of same-sex attraction.
- 34:35If we're striving to be Chase,
- 34:37we're striving to be a person of prayer,
- 34:39find fellowship, support the Christian community,
- 34:41and be a good example of a role model.
- 34:43If all of us are doing that,
- 34:45how the Church will be
- 34:47renewed in Christ Jesus,
- 34:49and we'll see those converts,
- 34:51the faith that we've seen
- 34:53grow over the last couple years,
- 34:55we'll see those converts
- 34:57quadruple because
- 34:59holiness begets holiness, right?
- 35:01Yes. I want to go back
- 35:03to the role
- 35:05of sacramental confession.
- 35:07I've been disturbed lately.
- 35:09I've seen some younger
- 35:11priests on YouTube
- 35:13say, well, you know,
- 35:15you don't really, really need
- 35:17technically to
- 35:19go to a priest for sacramental confession
- 35:21unless it's a mortal sin.
- 35:23And well,
- 35:25we don't want to really,
- 35:27really encourage people to have a habit
- 35:29of frequent confession because
- 35:31it's a form of generosity or something.
- 35:33I want to emphasize that
- 35:35sacramental confession isn't just
- 35:37juridical, that it's a
- 35:39sacrament of healing
- 35:41as well.
- 35:43And when people are healed,
- 35:45they become free from
- 35:47their compulsions and free
- 35:49for Christ.
- 35:51Can you address the
- 35:53importance of having a regular
- 35:55habit of confession for everyone
- 35:57who wants to live a Chase life?
- 35:59And I would just, if people
- 36:01question that, look at the catechism and the
- 36:03fruits of frequent confession
- 36:05is like, you become detached
- 36:07from sin. You desire
- 36:09grace.
- 36:11The habitual sins start to
- 36:13decrease. You start to find that
- 36:15inner freedom that is
- 36:17Christ Jesus. And so,
- 36:19frequent and fervent reception of the
- 36:21sacrament of confession, now,
- 36:23I would say, weak is a minimum,
- 36:25because we also want to grow
- 36:27and resolve to not fall into that sin
- 36:29and not use the
- 36:31sacrament for scrupulosity.
- 36:33But I think you see fruits
- 36:35that come from people
- 36:37coming to a fervent
- 36:39and frequent sacrament of confession.
- 36:41You see fruits of grace come from it.
- 36:43Just in the same way, a fervent and frequent
- 36:45reception of the sacrament of the Eucharist
- 36:47has an impact in that person's life.
- 36:49And so, in the same way it does
- 36:51the sacrament of confession.
- 36:53I have five parishes in
- 36:55Dayton, Ohio, and
- 36:57we offer confessions five days a week,
- 36:59and we're always busy.
- 37:01And so,
- 37:03we've seen in the last four years,
- 37:05our mass attendance is up
- 37:07over 500 people per weekend.
- 37:09Thanks be to God.
- 37:11And I think the sacrament
- 37:13of confession drives that.
- 37:15I absolutely agree that
- 37:17confession is integral
- 37:19to the Christian life.
- 37:21When I told seminarians,
- 37:23I said, look, if you want to be a good
- 37:25confessor, you have to start
- 37:27by being a good penitent.
- 37:29You have to be convinced
- 37:31of your own desperate life and
- 37:33death need for the sacrament
- 37:35of confession and the unique graces that
- 37:37it offers, because that will give
- 37:39you the generosity
- 37:41and the inspiration to
- 37:43make confession available
- 37:45to people
- 37:47when and as they need it.
- 37:49And for a priest who downplays
- 37:51the urgency of confession,
- 37:53I have to wonder
- 37:55what the role of confession is in his own
- 37:57life, but that will call for speculation.
- 37:59Father, we've got about two minutes
- 38:01left here in our conversation
- 38:03today. Talk about the role of
- 38:05Encourage as well, please.
- 38:07Encourage is the partner organization
- 38:09for Courage for family members who have a loved
- 38:11one who's sort of active in the lifestyle,
- 38:13experiencing that transgender,
- 38:15and moving down that transgender path.
- 38:17And they just
- 38:19need that accompaniment of
- 38:21how do we handle holidays?
- 38:23How do we handle family gatherings?
- 38:25How do we handle the wedding?
- 38:27When my son
- 38:29wants to get married to his same-sex partner,
- 38:31what do we do?
- 38:33Encourage is a place to find
- 38:35that support where others have
- 38:37walked that path.
- 38:39Typically, Courage meetings
- 38:41are weekly. Encourage meetings
- 38:43typically are monthly.
- 38:45Some frequency may
- 38:47depend on the local chapter,
- 38:49but it's
- 38:51just because the needs are a little bit different.
- 38:53But one of the beautiful things
- 38:55I love about our conference in July
- 38:57is that we bring Courage
- 38:59and Encourage members together, and there's
- 39:01so much healing that happens in those moments.
- 39:03Yes.
- 39:05I can testify to that as well.
- 39:07I've spoken at regional meetings
- 39:09and national meetings and so on,
- 39:11and it really is
- 39:13a very great grace.
- 39:15Friends, if you're experiencing same-sex
- 39:17attraction or gender dysphoria,
- 39:19or you are family or friends with those who do,
- 39:21there is hope.
- 39:23There is healing.
- 39:25The Catholic Church has very, very
- 39:27good news for you, offers you
- 39:29peace and healing and freedom
- 39:31and liberation, and offers
- 39:33you fellowship as well.
- 39:35You don't have to walk the hard road
- 39:37alone, and you don't have to
- 39:39take ungodly detours.
- 39:41Fr. Kyle Schnippel of Courage International,
- 39:43God bless your very good work,
- 39:45and I'm grateful for your time today.

- 41:21Praise be Jesus Christ. This is Father
- 41:23Robert McTigge of the Society of Jesus,
- 41:25your daily host for The Catholic Current,
- 41:27where we bring Christ to the world and the world
- 41:29to Christ. You're listening to us from the station
- 41:31of The Cross Studios, your local radio station
- 41:33and the iCatholic Radio mobile app
- 41:35and we proclaim the fullness of truth
- 41:37glory and charity. Hey, friends,
- 41:39here it is, the last segment of a timely Tuesday.
- 41:41You know what that means, you and me sharing
- 41:43timely thoughts, reflecting on
- 41:45what we've heard today. My guest today, my returning
- 41:47guest was Father Kyle
- 41:49Schnippel of Courage International.
- 41:51Courage International is a
- 41:53robustly Catholic
- 41:55apostolate that serves people
- 41:57who experience same-sex attraction
- 41:59and gender dysphoria, and
- 42:01it's aided by a group called
- 42:03Encourage, and it's for family and friends
- 42:05of the first group.
- 42:07And I know that Courage
- 42:09International got slapped recently
- 42:11in a synodal document, and I think that
- 42:13was intrinsically unjust, and I was glad
- 42:15that Father Kyle was able to
- 42:17join us to give us the straight dope on what's
- 42:19going on with Courage.
- 42:21And I've gotten a lot of things in my
- 42:23inbox recently. I, you know,
- 42:25June in the Catholic
- 42:27calendar is the month of the Sacred
- 42:29Heart. In the world, it's another
- 42:31kind of month. And I know there
- 42:33have been large Catholic
- 42:35confabulations, shall
- 42:37we say, emphasis on the word
- 42:39fabulous, for people
- 42:41who experience same-sex attraction
- 42:43and gender dysphoria,
- 42:45who have decided not to work with
- 42:47Courage International, but to
- 42:49work with other groups. And I know that
- 42:51prominent American cardinals
- 42:53have published
- 42:55letters that were rather
- 42:57enthusiastic
- 42:59about other approaches
- 43:01to
- 43:03postulates for people experiencing
- 43:05same-sex attraction that were
- 43:07not in the mode of Courage
- 43:09International. Now Courage International,
- 43:11founded by Father John Harvey,
- 43:13insisted that everyone,
- 43:15everyone, everyone, or if you will,
- 43:17todos, todos, todos,
- 43:19is called
- 43:21to chastity.
- 43:23And one of the things that I've
- 43:25noticed about
- 43:27groups that are not Courage
- 43:29International is
- 43:31they seem to be modest,
- 43:33coy,
- 43:35abstemious
- 43:37regarding statements
- 43:39in favor of
- 43:41chastity.
- 43:43And I just have to wonder,
- 43:45I just have
- 43:47to wonder why that is.
- 43:49I would ask my students, what might a
- 43:51reasonable man infer?
- 43:53Now, I have to be
- 43:55careful in whatever I talk about these issues.
- 43:57I have to take a deep breath
- 43:59and say,
- 44:01I am not a hater.
- 44:03I am not an advocate
- 44:05of violence.
- 44:07I don't want to throw rocks at
- 44:09anyone. And unlike
- 44:11misunderstanders of the religion of peace,
- 44:13I'm not inclined to throw anyone
- 44:15off a tower or hang them from the public
- 44:17square from a utility crane
- 44:19either.
- 44:21I don't wish anyone ill.
- 44:23I want
- 44:25everyone to live and die
- 44:27in a state of grace, become a saint,
- 44:29and enjoy the beatific vision.
- 44:31That's what I want for everyone.
- 44:33I think that's what every
- 44:35Catholic should want for everyone.
- 44:37And I know that some things
- 44:39facilitate
- 44:41living and dying as a saint,
- 44:43and some things
- 44:45don't.
- 44:47And I put myself in very good
- 44:49company with the scriptures and sacred
- 44:51tradition when I say that
- 44:53failure in
- 44:55chastity
- 44:57breaks friendship
- 44:59with God.
- 45:01And that's why
- 45:03we have to insist that
- 45:05everyone, regardless
- 45:07of preference or attraction,
- 45:09is called to chastity.
- 45:11And again, I think
- 45:13of my friends in Courage International
- 45:15who have lived
- 45:17sacrificially
- 45:19difficult lives
- 45:21in pursuit of virtue,
- 45:23in pursuit of chastity,
- 45:25striving mightily to remain within a state
- 45:27of grace, and finding
- 45:29healing, peace, and freedom.
- 45:31I just wonder
- 45:33what goes through their mind
- 45:35as they look through their years
- 45:37and decades of struggle,
- 45:39their
- 45:41conviction of
- 45:43having chaste friendships, etc., etc.,
- 45:45and then looking at these
- 45:47rather fabulous events elsewhere
- 45:49that take place in churches.
- 45:51I have to wonder,
- 45:53do they think that they're
- 45:55discounted?
- 45:57Do they think that they've been suckers
- 45:59and are being dismissed?
- 46:01And I have to wonder
- 46:03the enthusiasts who especially
- 46:05were at fabulous events
- 46:07this past weekend,
- 46:09what would they say, too,
- 46:11and perhaps more significantly, what would they say about
- 46:13those folks who live
- 46:15the demands that Courage International
- 46:17rightly acknowledges as
- 46:19universal?
- 46:21One cardinal
- 46:23recently wrote in a letter, said,
- 46:25Making a greater effort to listen
- 46:27to people's faith journeys
- 46:29by recognizing evangelization
- 46:31as a process
- 46:33enables people to grow in the relationship with
- 46:35Jesus Christ in solidarity with other members,
- 46:37etc., etc.,
- 46:39and we're going to imitate the early
- 46:41Christians who were determined
- 46:43that no one felt left out
- 46:45or was left behind.
- 46:47And I want to say, oh really?
- 46:49Oh really?
- 46:51Does that include your eminence
- 46:53to people in your archdiocese
- 46:55who want to pray in Latin?
- 46:57Who want to pray
- 46:59in the manner of their ancestors?
- 47:01Are they
- 47:03not left out?
- 47:05Not left behind?
- 47:07How much
- 47:09time have you
- 47:11spent listening to
- 47:13their faith journey?
- 47:15How much time
- 47:17have you accompanied them
- 47:19in a process
- 47:21of evangelization?
- 47:23Or are there some people that
- 47:25you would not want to be seen with
- 47:27or photographed with?
- 47:29I just wonder.
- 47:31I just wonder.
- 47:33Friends, we're at a crossroads
- 47:35and we have some hard
- 47:37decisions to make.
- 47:39I mean, very often, my years
- 47:41as a priest, as a professor
- 47:43working with college students,
- 47:45and I was told
- 47:47with confidence and a lot of conviction
- 47:49that the church needs to
- 47:51change its teaching about
- 47:53x, y, and z.
- 47:55And the church changing
- 47:57its teaching is very different
- 47:59from the development of
- 48:01doctrine. The development
- 48:03of doctrine says, this is what the church
- 48:05has always taught, and now
- 48:07we see its implications
- 48:09in a richer and deeper
- 48:11way. That's
- 48:13development of doctrine.
- 48:15Development of the doctrine is
- 48:17not, we used to
- 48:19believe this, but now
- 48:21we believe that.
- 48:23It just isn't.
- 48:25It just isn't.
- 48:27And I think of St.
- 48:29Peter Canisius of the Society of
- 48:31Jesus, a doctor of the
- 48:33church,
- 48:35who said that the sin of Sodom is such
- 48:37an offense against the orders of nature
- 48:39and grace that it cannot
- 48:41be sufficiently
- 48:43execrated, in other words, sufficiently
- 48:45hated in this life or
- 48:47the next. That's a
- 48:49saint and a doctor of the church.
- 48:51What do we say
- 48:53to him? More significantly,
- 48:55why did
- 48:57he teach what he taught? I go back
- 48:59to the students recommending
- 49:01that the church's teaching
- 49:03be taught. I said, look, before you tinker with
- 49:05theology,
- 49:07you have to deal with philosophy.
- 49:09Human bodies mean
- 49:11something. Human bodies
- 49:13as male and female mean
- 49:15something. And one of the
- 49:17ways we know that human bodies
- 49:19as male and female mean something
- 49:21is the way that they were designed.
- 49:23So before you even start
- 49:25tinkering with philosophy,
- 49:27you've got to come to terms
- 49:29with biology. It is
- 49:31really obvious that
- 49:33bodies were meant to do some
- 49:35things and not others.
- 49:37Almost as if there
- 49:39was an intelligent design
- 49:41behind it all.
- 49:43And my fear is that
- 49:45obvious facts of
- 49:47biology, perennial
- 49:49principles of philosophy,
- 49:51and unchangeable teachings
- 49:53of the Catholic Church Christ founded
- 49:55are being swept
- 49:57under the rug. And that's
- 49:59not good for souls.
