- 0:00Speaker 1: Eight thirty nine thirteen ten Wiba and Ask the Experts,
- 0:04Speaker 1: joined in studio by doctor Marty Greer of Checkout Veterinary.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Of course, doctor Greer is recognized as Veteran of the
- 0:12Speaker 1: Year by the Westminster Kennel Club. You can learn more
- 0:15Speaker 1: about the doctor and everyone at Checkout Veterinary also what
- 0:18Speaker 1: makes it so unique and so special online their website
- 0:22Speaker 1: checkout vet dot com. Let's checkout vet dot com. Telphen
- 0:26Speaker 1: number six oh eight three one eight sixty seven hundred.
- 0:28Speaker 1: That's six oh eight three one eight sixty seven hundred
- 0:31Speaker 1: clinic right in sun Prairie, just right off the interest
- 0:34Speaker 1: as a matter of fact, right up the road there
- 0:35Speaker 1: in the Prairie Lakes Prairie Lakes Drive that area. I
- 0:37Speaker 1: think folks, most of you probably pretty familiar with that area.
- 0:40Speaker 1: It's really convenient. And I got to ask it was
- 0:43Speaker 1: that was probably and uh oh interesting, I wonder maybe, well, actually,
- 0:49Speaker 1: here's what we're gonna do, Katie. Would you be able
- 0:50Speaker 1: to just run over there quick and just turn up
- 0:52Speaker 1: there's that one volume. Now I think we're having connection
- 0:55Speaker 1: issues for the doctor because I asked the doctor about
- 0:58Speaker 1: about the clinic location, which is which is like the
- 1:04Speaker 1: uh yeah, yeah, anything check one two is it's no, okay. Well,
- 1:09Speaker 1: what we'll do is we'll take a real short break here.
- 1:11Speaker 1: Unfortunately we're having some technical problems and we'll really quickly
- 1:14Speaker 1: take about thirty sex and be right back with the doctor.
- 1:16Speaker 1: But I want to ask her about that location because
- 1:18Speaker 1: it's absolutely fantastic. More of asked the experts with doctor
- 1:21Speaker 1: Greer next year on thirteen ten wib A ten wi
- 1:25Speaker 1: b A and asked the experts hanging out with doctor
- 1:27Speaker 1: Greer of Checkout Veterinarian doctor. Good to see you, by
- 1:32Speaker 1: the way. I always excited when you're in and get
- 1:35Speaker 1: to talk about great stuff, great opportunity to call if
- 1:37Speaker 1: you've got a question for the doctor. Six' eight three
- 1:39Speaker 1: two one thirteen ten. That's six o eight three two
- 1:41Speaker 1: one thirteen ten. I was talking about the convenience of
- 1:45Speaker 1: the clinic and Checkout VET what a great concept it is,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and it dawned on me not only is the clinic
- 1:51Speaker 1: itself convenient, but the location is convenient. I'm going to
- 1:55Speaker 1: guess that wasn't by accident.
- 1:56Speaker 2: No, it wasn't an accident. As soon as target was
- 2:00Speaker 2: on that intersection, we started looking and looking and so
- 2:03Speaker 2: we'd go to my sister in law's house for Thanksgiving
- 2:07Speaker 2: and she lived in Cottage Grove and I'd say, Okay,
- 2:09Speaker 2: on the way home, we have to drive through here.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So we were watching and looking for a very long
- 2:14Speaker 2: time to find a location that really seemed to be
- 2:18Speaker 2: ideally suited for the kind of busy family activities that
- 2:24Speaker 2: need the support of a veterinary clinic that's convenient and
- 2:28Speaker 2: conveniently located.
- 2:29Speaker 3: So we worked hard to get that location.
- 2:31Speaker 1: It is a prime it's a prime spot, and for
- 2:33Speaker 1: folks that haven't had a chance again, it's at twenty
- 2:34Speaker 1: seven to ten Prairie Legs Drive. You can see some
- 2:37Speaker 1: great I know, the website's been updated and it's really
- 2:39Speaker 1: really cool. Check them out. Checkout vet dot com. That's
- 2:42Speaker 1: checkout vet dot com open Monday through Wednesday, Friday through
- 2:46Speaker 1: Sunday nine until five. And of course say well what
- 2:48Speaker 1: about Thursday, Well Thursday, of course the check in Veterinary
- 2:52Speaker 1: is open that day, so they got you covered seven
- 2:54Speaker 1: days week. Speak of locations, and obviously, the sun Prairie
- 2:58Speaker 1: location of Checkout Veterinary just super convenience, super super good
- 3:03Speaker 1: for folks to get to community vet clinics are Unfortunately
- 3:08Speaker 1: a lot of them are closing as vets are retiring
- 3:10Speaker 1: and other things, and people are losing that convenience, losing
- 3:14Speaker 1: that connection Marshall. Thank goodness, Marshall, Wisconsin. There was an
- 3:19Speaker 1: opportunity there to keep that clinic going, and you and
- 3:23Speaker 1: the team at Checkout Veterinary Doc have kept that clinic going.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And people love it, don't they.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Yeah, they're very happy to have us, really excited that
- 3:30Speaker 2: we're still in the community instead of them having to
- 3:32Speaker 2: hop in the car and find another location. And right now,
- 3:35Speaker 2: a lot of veterinary clinics are not They don't have
- 3:38Speaker 2: the capacity with staff and doctors to take new clients
- 3:41Speaker 2: and new pets. So many people are frustrated by that.
- 3:44Speaker 2: They're trying to get veterinary care and they can't. So
- 3:47Speaker 2: we've been working very hard to get our staff up
- 3:50Speaker 2: to the level that we can take everybody. So we
- 3:53Speaker 2: are taking new clients at check In, check Out and
- 3:56Speaker 2: at Marshall. So please give us a call and get,
- 4:00Speaker 2: you know, get on our list, because we really want
- 4:02Speaker 2: to help you and we really want you to support local,
- 4:05Speaker 2: family owned veterinary clinics rather than the larger corporate structures
- 4:10Speaker 2: that are starting to take over some of the clinics.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And just I just I'm just curious about that too,
- 4:16Speaker 1: because we don't have to go too deep into it.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But sometimes you mentioned some of those kind of corporate ones,
- 4:21Speaker 1: they don't You may not know until you've become a
- 4:25Speaker 1: patient there that that's what the setup is.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and it can be really hard to figure out.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I have looked at a number of websites of other
- 4:31Speaker 2: veterinary clinics, and it can be a little hard to
- 4:34Speaker 2: drill down far enough into those websites to discover the ownership.
- 4:37Speaker 2: So take a look at the about or the team
- 4:40Speaker 2: and see who the doctors are there, and see if
- 4:43Speaker 2: it states that they are owners or managing the clinics.
- 4:47Speaker 2: That's really important, I think, because that means the decisions
- 4:50Speaker 2: for your pet's care are made at that level and
- 4:52Speaker 2: not made it a corporate level. For instance, they are
- 4:55Speaker 2: not mandated to do a certain kind of work up
- 4:58Speaker 2: on your pet if your pet comes in sick. In
- 4:59Speaker 2: our practices, you are participant in the decisions on how
- 5:03Speaker 2: the pet care has provided, what diagnostics. We can give
- 5:07Speaker 2: you guidance, we can give you advice, but we're not
- 5:09Speaker 2: here to dictate to you how to do things. So
- 5:12Speaker 2: we want to make sure that we are giving clients
- 5:14Speaker 2: all their options on what their pets care could look like,
- 5:18Speaker 2: how much they can afford to spend, how much they're
- 5:20Speaker 2: willing to spend, what's the best outcome for the pet.
- 5:23Speaker 2: And sometimes those are difficult decisions, but we want you involved.
- 5:27Speaker 2: And it's not really a paternalistic type of approach to
- 5:30Speaker 2: veterinary care. It's really a collaborative, cooperative approach.
- 5:34Speaker 1: It's pretty it's as you talk talk about, you know,
- 5:37Speaker 1: having being that that cooperation and as a pet parent,
- 5:41Speaker 1: pet owner, it's a it's just a really really great,
- 5:43Speaker 1: great thing to be aware of. And the doctor mentioned
- 5:46Speaker 1: to make appointments, of course I get to just pick
- 5:48Speaker 1: up pone gamcall six, so I three one eight sixty
- 5:50Speaker 1: seven hundred. That's three one eight sixty seven hundred. Also
- 5:52Speaker 1: that newly designed website checkout vet dot com make an
- 5:55Speaker 1: appointment right online as well. Got a couple of really
- 5:58Speaker 1: important things. These probably are going to be running topics
- 6:00Speaker 1: for the next couple of weeks. We're going to talk
- 6:02Speaker 1: about with colder weather, keeping your pets safe, healthy and happy.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Also with Christmas and the holidays going on right now.
- 6:09Speaker 1: There are some there are some dangers. There are some
- 6:12Speaker 1: preventative things you want to be aware. We'll talk with
- 6:14Speaker 1: a doctor about that in just a moment. But first, Ah,
- 6:17Speaker 1: my goodness. Coming up on the fifteenth, between one thirty
- 6:21Speaker 1: and three thirty, You've got a very special guest visiting
- 6:24Speaker 1: the clinic, don't you, doctor.
- 6:25Speaker 3: We do.
- 6:26Speaker 2: We're putting up some special fencing and we are having
- 6:28Speaker 2: a real live reindeer that will be there for photo opportunities,
- 6:32Speaker 2: So bring the kids, get your photos. It's a great
- 6:35Speaker 2: chance to get your Christmas cards or your Facebook posts
- 6:38Speaker 2: done that include and it.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Really is a reindeer, a real reindeer.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah. It's coming from the small family farm reindeer games
- 6:48Speaker 2: here in Wisconsin. And it turns out that a good
- 6:51Speaker 2: friend of mine that's a veterinarian does their reproductive work.
- 6:53Speaker 2: He's from Utah, but there aren't a lot of breeders
- 6:57Speaker 2: and people that work with reindeer, so he's got a
- 7:00Speaker 2: pretty specialized niche. So he is a good affiliate of theirs.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So it'll be really fun to have this reindeer. And
- 7:08Speaker 2: you know, I generally don't hope for snow, but maybe
- 7:11Speaker 2: a little snow that day would be uh, make it
- 7:14Speaker 2: a little more festive.
- 7:15Speaker 1: That is going to be absolutely fantastic. The meet and
- 7:17Speaker 1: greet photo op again, that's marked this on your calendars.
- 7:20Speaker 1: That's December fifteenth, December fifteenth, between one thirty and three
- 7:24Speaker 1: thirty at checkout Veterinary Again. That's on Sunday. That's just
- 7:28Speaker 1: not this upcoming Sunday, but the following Sunday would be
- 7:31Speaker 1: the fifteenth. Get on out, Come on out, Bring the kiddos,
- 7:34Speaker 1: get some pictures taken, bring grand kiddos. Again. It's from
- 7:36Speaker 1: one thirty until three thirty. More details available online at
- 7:39Speaker 1: checkout vet dot com. That's checkout vet dot com. Got
- 7:43Speaker 1: a question for the doctor. We've got line open for
- 7:45Speaker 1: you right now. I love to have you join us.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Six oh eight three two one thirteen ten. That's six
- 7:49Speaker 1: oh eight three two one thirteen ten. I think this
- 7:52Speaker 1: is kind of that week, and I know we've got
- 7:54Speaker 1: what Thanksgiving was the latest it could possibly be this
- 7:57Speaker 1: this year, so got kind of a condensed window between
- 8:00Speaker 1: now and Christmas. So a lot of folks are putting
- 8:02Speaker 1: trees up and other decorations. They look great, but there's
- 8:05Speaker 1: also temptations there that as pet owners, we want to
- 8:08Speaker 1: be aware of it, aren't there.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Oh yeah, And we don't want this to be doom
- 8:12Speaker 2: and gloom. We want it to be really fun for you.
- 8:13Speaker 2: But if you have puppies, if you have kittens, those
- 8:16Speaker 2: younger pets, especially the kittens, they think climbing that tree,
- 8:19Speaker 2: that new installation that you put in the living room
- 8:21Speaker 2: for them, that like that is their new cool place
- 8:25Speaker 2: to hang out. Be aware that a lot of kittens
- 8:27Speaker 2: will climb it, puppies will play with the ornaments. It
- 8:29Speaker 2: can be, you know, a little harrowing sometimes. So I
- 8:32Speaker 2: do suggest that you tether your Christmas tree to a
- 8:35Speaker 2: ceiling ceiling hook to keep it steady. No matter how
- 8:38Speaker 2: tall the tree is, if it doesn't have a heavy
- 8:41Speaker 2: enough base, it's pretty easy for that tree to tip over.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I've had my tree go over twice. Once was because
- 8:46Speaker 2: of a puppy. Once was my husband, but that's another story.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So even tethering will protect it from your husband. So, yeah,
- 8:54Speaker 2: you know, those things happen. He came in, shut the
- 8:56Speaker 2: front door a little hard and the tree went over.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So be careful with the ornaments you put on. They
- 9:01Speaker 2: may be breakable, so be careful with that, be careful
- 9:04Speaker 2: with tinsel and angel hair and the long skinny things,
- 9:06Speaker 2: because puppies and kittens if they eat those, and adult
- 9:09Speaker 2: dogs and cats too, can cause obstructions. I usually put
- 9:12Speaker 2: something like bells on the lower trees branches so that
- 9:16Speaker 2: if the puppy or kitten is in the tree, I
- 9:18Speaker 2: can hear it, and I will put something like candy
- 9:20Speaker 2: canes on it without the cellophane, so that again, if
- 9:23Speaker 2: they eat it, it won't hurt. If the puppy eats
- 9:26Speaker 2: a candy cane, it will hurt it they eat a
- 9:27Speaker 2: glass ornament. So be thoughtful about what you're putting up.
- 9:31Speaker 2: Maybe not put your very best ornaments on the tree
- 9:33Speaker 2: this year if you have a new puppy or kitten,
- 9:36Speaker 2: or if you're concerned about that. No matter whether you
- 9:38Speaker 2: have a real tree or an artificial tree, it can
- 9:40Speaker 2: be risky. And some times the week that people put
- 9:45Speaker 2: up their Christmas tree, if a pet has allergies pre
- 9:47Speaker 2: existing allergies and they seem to quiet down because we
- 9:49Speaker 2: got some cold weather, sometimes it'll flare right back up
- 9:52Speaker 2: during that week that you put the tree up, or
- 9:55Speaker 2: if you put real life bows in your house. So
- 9:57Speaker 2: if you're seeing allergy symptoms. It's probably from.
- 10:00Speaker 1: That doctor you mentioned two things like tinsel and other
- 10:03Speaker 1: things that I've got to imagine you've you've had pets
- 10:06Speaker 1: come in where you had to send them in for surgery.
- 10:09Speaker 1: That stuff can be very, very serious and quite costly
- 10:13Speaker 1: to have taken care of. Definitely, it's a lot easier
- 10:16Speaker 1: just to avoid it all I would, I would guess,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and I don't want to speak for you. It's probably
- 10:21Speaker 1: something just to avoid.
- 10:23Speaker 2: It's just safer that way, because tinsel will anything that's
- 10:26Speaker 2: long and skinny. Cats like to play with those things.
- 10:28Speaker 2: They swallow them, but they have barbs on their tongue,
- 10:30Speaker 2: so once they're swallowed, they can't spit.
- 10:32Speaker 3: It back out.
- 10:33Speaker 2: So it's a good idea. Just simply don't put temptation
- 10:36Speaker 2: in the way. At Easter we say no Easter grass.
- 10:38Speaker 2: At Christmas we say no tinsel, any of those long,
- 10:41Speaker 2: skinny types of things, yarns, any of those things. The
- 10:45Speaker 2: kittens and puppies, especially kittens like to play with those,
- 10:47Speaker 2: So be careful, be thoughtful, and then think about what
- 10:50Speaker 2: you've put under the tree as wrapped gifts as well.
- 10:52Speaker 2: We have people that get send like cheese and sausage
- 10:55Speaker 2: boxes or chocolate covered raisins, and those your pet smells
- 11:00Speaker 2: right through the wrapping paper. You may not notice that
- 11:02Speaker 2: there's sausage enger your Christmas tree, but your little dog knows.
- 11:05Speaker 2: And if you leave the house or you go to
- 11:07Speaker 2: bed and the pet has access to that. So sometimes
- 11:10Speaker 2: putting a pen around the Christmas tree, an exercise pen,
- 11:13Speaker 2: can be helpful. But if you put those things under
- 11:15Speaker 2: the tree and you don't know that there's something edible
- 11:18Speaker 2: in the package because you didn't sniff it before you
- 11:20Speaker 2: put it under the tree, I mean, you know, came
- 11:22Speaker 2: on Amazon and you just popped it under the tree.
- 11:25Speaker 2: So just be thoughtful about what you're putting under there,
- 11:27Speaker 2: because we don't want you to come home to find
- 11:30Speaker 2: your dog has eaten two pounds of sausage or a
- 11:33Speaker 2: bag of chocolate covered raisins, or you know, the cat
- 11:35Speaker 2: got into something that was toxic. And a lot of
- 11:38Speaker 2: the things that we don't think of as being toxic
- 11:40Speaker 2: for us are toxic to our pets.
- 11:41Speaker 3: So just be careful with those things you mentioned.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Raisins, those are no bueno.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Right those yeah, raisins and grapes are in some cases
- 11:49Speaker 2: can cause kidney failure, and then if you double whammy
- 11:51Speaker 2: it with chocolate, then you have a real significant problem.
- 11:54Speaker 2: And we actually had one of those a number of
- 11:56Speaker 2: years ago, so that two dollars bag of chocolate covered
- 11:58Speaker 2: raisins turned into several thousand dollars bill because the pet
- 12:02Speaker 2: had to be in the hospital on fluids and had
- 12:04Speaker 2: to had diarrhea, had all the symptoms that went along
- 12:07Speaker 2: with chocolate and with raisins. So they are dangerous. So
- 12:11Speaker 2: you know, just just be careful what you're putting under there.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Wrapping it doesn't keep your.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Pet away from it.
- 12:17Speaker 2: It just makes it one more layer of paper. But
- 12:19Speaker 2: that's not a problem for most dogs.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Really important insight this morning from doctor Marty Greer of
- 12:23Speaker 1: Checkout Veterinary. The website checkout vet dot com. That's checkout
- 12:27Speaker 1: vet dot com. You can schedule appointment right online. You
- 12:30Speaker 1: can learn more about checkout Veterinary as well, right at
- 12:32Speaker 1: the website checkout vet dot com. It's a great data
- 12:35Speaker 1: start that relationship. Don't forget your first visit that exam.
- 12:38Speaker 1: It will be free to you and your pet. Of course,
- 12:40Speaker 1: diagnostics and other types of testing there are fees, and
- 12:43Speaker 1: that's all spelled out transparent right at checkout vet dot com.
- 12:47Speaker 1: You have the website checkout vet dot com. One more
- 12:49Speaker 1: thing too, when you were talking about maybe the dog
- 12:52Speaker 1: getting into the cheese and sausage basket, do dogs just
- 12:56Speaker 1: not know when to stop eating? Because it seems as
- 12:59Speaker 1: you were, I was like vision envisioning this, and I'm like,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I can easily see a dog eating a whole log
- 13:04Speaker 1: of sausage thinking.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh yeah, yeah, why why not just gulp
- 13:09Speaker 2: it down? And you know, he who eats the fastest
- 13:11Speaker 2: gets the mostest. So the faster you run toward the
- 13:14Speaker 2: dog to take it away, the faster the dog gulps
- 13:16Speaker 2: it down. So yes, they don't really have boundaries, okay,
- 13:20Speaker 2: but frankly, sometimes we don't either. You know, Thanksgiving Christmas,
- 13:24Speaker 2: you have that plate? How many times did you go
- 13:27Speaker 2: back and fill it up again even though you really
- 13:29Speaker 2: weren't hungry. So yes, those things happen, and we have
- 13:32Speaker 2: to be honest about it. So just be you know, aware,
- 13:35Speaker 2: things like macadamia nuts can be toxic to dogs. The
- 13:38Speaker 2: sugarless gums and candies can be toxic. And like I said,
- 13:42Speaker 2: those are things that we don't really think about because
- 13:45Speaker 2: you know, for us they're fine. And of course, you know,
- 13:48Speaker 2: we see all the other things that the pets get
- 13:50Speaker 2: into as well, the things that they're really not supposed
- 13:52Speaker 2: to and we prefer our kids probably weren't into them either,
- 13:55Speaker 2: like the chewy and the gummies and the CBD and
- 13:58Speaker 2: the THHC products, And again, pets will very readily get
- 14:02Speaker 2: into those, especially dogs, if it's stashed into the bed
- 14:05Speaker 2: or under the pillow and the kids think that they've
- 14:07Speaker 2: got it stashed away pretty securely. You remember, dogs are
- 14:12Speaker 2: meant to do search and rescue. That's why they use
- 14:15Speaker 2: them when they're trying to find lost people. So yeah,
- 14:18Speaker 2: they're really good at finding those things under the bed,
- 14:20Speaker 2: in the bathroom, tucked under something in the closet, in
- 14:24Speaker 2: the suitcase, in the backpack, all the places that you
- 14:27Speaker 2: just think, oh, yeah, I left it in the backpack,
- 14:29Speaker 2: it's fine. Nope, dogs will eat right through those things.
- 14:32Speaker 2: If they can eat your shoe, they can eat through
- 14:34Speaker 2: the backpack.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Lock that stuff away exactly, exactly. Dogs running with doctor
- 14:40Speaker 1: Greer and doctor of course, Marty Greer comes to us
- 14:42Speaker 1: from checkout Veterinary and doctor with the weather this morning.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I think a lot of us got that shiver as
- 14:48Speaker 1: we stepped out the door. It's important to be mindful
- 14:50Speaker 1: of your pets as well, and things like protecting you
- 14:55Speaker 1: think of, like taking your dog for a walk, protecting
- 14:58Speaker 1: their paws and stuff really important.
- 15:00Speaker 2: It is, And especially when it's at that slushy temperature
- 15:03Speaker 2: right where the freezing temperature occurs. It's actually better if
- 15:06Speaker 2: it's a little colder because it isn't as wet as
- 15:10Speaker 2: snow or wet of slushy sleep whatever it happens to
- 15:13Speaker 2: be as the precipitation.
- 15:15Speaker 3: So think about how.
- 15:17Speaker 2: It would feel if you were out there barefoot, and
- 15:19Speaker 2: that slushy temperature is that freeze thought cycle, and we
- 15:21Speaker 2: actually see more damage to the feet and other body
- 15:24Speaker 2: parts at that temperature.
- 15:25Speaker 3: So put on your little jacket. Some dogs will let
- 15:28Speaker 3: you put on booties. Some don't.
- 15:30Speaker 2: They make cordora ones, they make waterproof ones, they make
- 15:33Speaker 2: the rubber ones, they make leather. There's a lot of
- 15:35Speaker 2: different booties. Now, I have a lot of dogs, so
- 15:37Speaker 2: putting booties on all four of the feet of all
- 15:40Speaker 2: my little dogs before they go out would not be
- 15:42Speaker 2: very practical. So mine go out for a fairly short
- 15:44Speaker 2: period of time. But if you're big into being outside,
- 15:48Speaker 2: put a little jacket on them. And I saw this
- 15:50Speaker 2: morning that the company that makes the heated vests, Aurora,
- 15:54Speaker 2: they make a heated dog vest now, so yeah, with
- 15:57Speaker 2: a little battery and the whole thing. So of course
- 15:59Speaker 2: you don't the dog to chew up the battery, so
- 16:02Speaker 2: make sure that when you put it on the dog
- 16:03Speaker 2: that the dog doesn't walk around with it on with
- 16:05Speaker 2: you not really paying attention. But yeah, they make little
- 16:09Speaker 2: heated vests for dogs now too. So if you want
- 16:11Speaker 2: to be outside and you have a dog with a
- 16:13Speaker 2: short coat, then they may need that extra protection. If
- 16:15Speaker 2: you have a fluffy dog, a dog with an undercoat
- 16:17Speaker 2: like a Golden Retriever, a German Shepherd, they tolerate the
- 16:20Speaker 2: cold pretty well. But the smooth coated dogs, like a
- 16:23Speaker 2: lot of the terriers, the Dalmatian, the you know those
- 16:27Speaker 2: really Boston terriers, you know, they don't carry that extra
- 16:32Speaker 2: fluffy factor. And even some of the curly coated dogs
- 16:36Speaker 2: don't carry the undercoat, so they can be colder. So
- 16:39Speaker 2: think about if they look uncomfortable, it's time to go home.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Don't continue the walk, get them back home, and then
- 16:45Speaker 2: prepare better for the next time that you go out.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I love taking my dogs out and walking them in
- 16:49Speaker 2: the mornings when it's nice and you know, fresh and
- 16:52Speaker 2: there's fresh snow and all those things.
- 16:53Speaker 3: But think about it.
- 16:55Speaker 2: I like taking my dog snowshoeeing. It's really fun. But
- 16:58Speaker 2: protect them so that they are comfortable during that event.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Is there is there something to be said for kind
- 17:03Speaker 1: of understanding the breed. I know we've talked to the
- 17:05Speaker 1: DNA testing and obviously if you're getting like a purebred,
- 17:08Speaker 1: a thing understanding that breed. I know, for folks that
- 17:10Speaker 1: are very much into winter activities, there are certain dogs
- 17:13Speaker 1: that this is like prime, this is their their dream season.
- 17:16Speaker 1: They love the cold, they love the snow. They loved
- 17:18Speaker 1: like they get into the snow. It's important when you're
- 17:22Speaker 1: selecting a pet that it's going to fit your lifestyle.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, you don't want to malimute to live
- 17:26Speaker 2: with you in Florida. You want a malamute to live
- 17:29Speaker 2: with you in Wisconsin. So malamutes and Bernie's Mountain Dogs
- 17:32Speaker 2: and Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs and Samoyads, semiods, you know,
- 17:36Speaker 2: those Northern Arctic Circle kind of dogs. They love it,
- 17:40Speaker 2: like Bernie's Mountain Dogs. Like to go out and be
- 17:42Speaker 2: on the tallest pile of snow in your yard possible.
- 17:45Speaker 2: They will go out and roll around in the snow.
- 17:47Speaker 3: And then you get the other little dogs like your
- 17:49Speaker 3: little dog.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I mean, I have dogs from Sweden, and even those
- 17:52Speaker 2: dogs aren't really happy with the cold. My Corgies like
- 17:54Speaker 2: the cold, but the Danish Twittish farm dogs are like
- 17:56Speaker 2: what what.
- 17:58Speaker 3: So you know think about it?
- 18:00Speaker 2: I flew to Florida one year with my dog for
- 18:02Speaker 2: a dog show and brought her back and when we landed,
- 18:04Speaker 2: we went to the airport and there had been fourteen
- 18:06Speaker 2: inches of snow while we were gone, and so I
- 18:09Speaker 2: dropped her out of the van that took me back
- 18:12Speaker 2: to my vehicle, and she turned out around and looked
- 18:14Speaker 2: at me like, Okay, four hours ago it was green
- 18:16Speaker 2: and grassy, and now or in fourteen inches of snow?
- 18:19Speaker 2: Are you crazy? So the dogs do know that it's
- 18:22Speaker 2: cold and windy and snowy, So just be.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Careful with them.
- 18:27Speaker 2: If they love being out there, let them be out
- 18:29Speaker 2: there with a certain amount of reason. And the other
- 18:31Speaker 2: thing is, don't forget if you have dogs that are
- 18:33Speaker 2: outside and your only source of water for them is
- 18:35Speaker 2: outside it's going to freeze. So the colder it is,
- 18:38Speaker 2: the faster it freezes. You want to make sure that
- 18:40Speaker 2: you're outdoor dogs. If you're taking care of outdoor cats,
- 18:43Speaker 2: the same thing, make sure that they have access to
- 18:45Speaker 2: fresh fowd water. They do make heated water bowls that
- 18:49Speaker 2: you can purchase and they're a great tool to have.
- 18:51Speaker 2: You can get them at the farm stores, you can
- 18:53Speaker 2: get them online.
- 18:54Speaker 3: So have those heated bowls.
- 18:56Speaker 2: And you can buy little heated houses for if you're
- 18:59Speaker 2: caring for some outdoor cats, you know, provide those kinds
- 19:01Speaker 2: of extra protections for them. A big unheated garage is
- 19:04Speaker 2: not warm, a little heated space is and there you know,
- 19:08Speaker 2: there's a company in Wisconsin that makes a lot of
- 19:11Speaker 2: those devices now, so take a look for those for
- 19:13Speaker 2: your pets, your chickens, your your rabbits, your cats, your
- 19:16Speaker 2: you know, whatever is living outside with you.
- 19:18Speaker 1: And speaking of outdoor cats and for folks that are
- 19:21Speaker 1: especially in rural areas, but other things that they're obviously
- 19:24Speaker 1: seeking heat. If you're in one of those areas, you
- 19:27Speaker 1: want to check make sure they haven't found heat in
- 19:29Speaker 1: parts of your car under that and that does happen, right,
- 19:33Speaker 1: They will get an engine based in other area.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah, the fan belt injuries can be pretty serious, so
- 19:38Speaker 2: it's mostly a problem if the car has been parked
- 19:40Speaker 2: for a short period of time and the engine is
- 19:42Speaker 2: still warm. If it's been parked overnight, it's probably not
- 19:45Speaker 2: going to be too much of an issue because the
- 19:46Speaker 2: engine is cold. But if the engine is somewhat warm,
- 19:49Speaker 2: cats will get up underneath the vehicle, go up and
- 19:52Speaker 2: lay on parts of the engine. So thump the hood
- 19:55Speaker 2: on your vehicle before you start the engine, just to
- 19:57Speaker 2: startle them enough that they are chased off before you
- 20:00Speaker 2: have a fanbelt injury, because those are really devastating injuries.
