- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock
- 0:08shadow.
- 0:09And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skullclo, Portfolio Manager at PSG Wealth
- 0:13Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:15First thing, Skull, is that there's a bit of a hum in the background because it's 36
- 0:20degrees outside and
- 0:22I put the air conditioning on.
- 0:24I don't usually like that because it gives me a stiff neck.
- 0:29It's on, so forgive the hum.
- 0:30The second thing is, how was the Kalahari?
- 0:33Oh, that was talking about having to use the air con again, and for
- 0:40the better.
- 0:41It was just wonderful.
- 0:42Kalahari always remained the Kalahari.
- 0:45The most greenest I've ever seen it.
- 0:49It's not your normal Kalahari, but, I mean, you could see the game is enjoying
- 0:55it.
- 0:56They've got more than enough to eat.
- 0:57Now we live in the most...
- 0:58beautiful, beautiful country in the world, for sure.
- 1:02I think geographically you do, yes.
- 1:04I mean, I see beauty even in the Netherlands, but when it comes to
- 1:09topography and geography,
- 1:11standout winner globally is South Africa.
- 1:14Anyway, let's not get me all misty-eyed about South Africa.
- 1:17Let's have a look at the markets now.
- 1:19Brent crude oil, $73.39, down nearly 5% on the day.
- 1:25So that is what?
- 1:26around about a...
- 1:27a 25% to 30% fall in about two weeks.
- 1:32This is important, Scott.
- 1:33This is really important if it stays here.
- 1:36And because people were factoring in 90 to 110, maybe even higher for a protracted
- 1:42period,
- 1:43not going to happen anymore, it doesn't seem.
- 1:46No, it's definitely, it's positive in the sense that there's major,
- 1:54it's still inflation worries.
- 1:55There's major...
- 1:56interest rate worries.
- 1:58But I mean, with the retracement in the oil price lately, that's definitely put
- 2:03some, well, let's
- 2:05call it less pressure for further hikes.
- 2:08That said, there's still some pressure on the US.
- 2:11I mean, we do still see the pressure there, the probabilities for rate hikes in
- 2:17that
- 2:18site.
- 2:18And we're now looking at the CME Fed 2, I think it's about 40% for...
- 2:23for July, and we're sitting at more than 50% probability for rate hike in
- 2:29September.
- 2:30So that's putting some pressure on rates to go up, and it's putting some pressure
- 2:37on
- 2:37commodities.
- 2:37I mean, we've seen major, major drops in the likes of the gold price, platinum
- 2:42price, palladium price, copper price.
- 2:44So it's not just oil.
- 2:45It's sort of a broad commodity sell-off.
- 2:50And naturally… It's the dollar scale.
- 2:53It's the dollar.
- 2:53I mean, I led with the oil price, but nagging away at me was whether I should
- 2:58have led with the dollar, because look at that thing
- 3:00go against the euro.
- 3:01I mean, the ECB has raised rates, and yet the euro is getting smashed by the US
- 3:07dollar in
- 3:08currency terms, because don't forget, the euro dollar is a massive, massive market.
- 3:11So the move we've seen recently, again, last two weeks or so, has been
- 3:17significant, I think.
- 3:18Correct.
- 3:19Yeah, dollar index over 101.
- 3:21I mean, I looked at the graph, I think it was yesterday before the big drop below
- 3:25$4,000 per ounce on the gold.
- 3:28It was already yesterday.
- 3:30You just do the dollar index, you put the gold price on the same graph.
- 3:35And we know that they run in a perfect inverse correlation.
- 3:39And naturally, you know, with the rise of the dollar, you don't need to look too
- 3:45much further to why
- 3:46we're seeing some of these commodity prices drop.
- 3:48But I mean, what I want to allude to, I mean, South Africa as the largest platinum
- 3:54producer, second largest palladium
- 3:55producer, eighth largest gold producer, one of the largest, we know, largest
- 4:00rhodium, one of the largest
- 4:02copper.
- 4:03I mean, that just means that in a movement that we've seen over the past few days
- 4:08where the retracement of these types of
- 4:10commodity prices is going to put some pressure on, you know, both the rent and
- 4:14naturally, like we've seen today.
- 4:16I mean, I'm looking at...
- 4:18S&P 500 is positive, and we'll know when we look at the actual data.
- 4:21S&P 500 is positive today.
- 4:23NASDAQ is positive today.
- 4:24Dow Jones is positive today.
- 4:26But when you look at the JSE, I mean, it took a hiding today.
- 4:30I'm looking at mining and metals.
- 4:31I'm looking at the commodity index, and we'll come to that later on.
- 4:34But it has been a sort of a mini bloodbath, hasn't it?
- 4:37And it's really not good because the last thing we need in South Africa is the
- 4:42commodity cycle to be
- 4:43scuppered by a stronger dollar.
- 4:46and the week around not helping as much as it might do.
- 4:50And the revenues that were so enthusiastically spoken about in the
- 4:55budget might not be quite as
- 4:56glamorous as the Treasury.
- 4:59predicted.
- 5:01Yeah, I remember the windfall that we had with the commodity boom.
- 5:05Yeah, we're talking about a current account that's been positive and growing.
- 5:09I mean, all this positivity was predominantly driven by
- 5:16stronger commodities.
- 5:18And that has been to the benefit of South Africa.
- 5:21Because we know without them, I don't think our economy would have been growing.
- 5:25I mean, we're struggling to grow.
- 5:28our gdp by one percent per annum so yes i do think that if this is going to be a
- 5:34actual
- 5:35turn in the commodity cycle where we see a massive retracement in some of these
- 5:39commodity prices yeah i think it's it's gonna
- 5:41it's gonna put some pressure on on on the south african in economy as well yeah um
- 5:47and you've got to really say to
- 5:48yourself now is what you got to say is is this just a blip Is this just an interest
- 5:53rate led?
- 5:54sell-off in other currencies against the mighty US dollar and therefore the same
- 5:59applies to the commodity boom.
- 6:01Is it all over or is it just a little bump in the road?
- 6:05It's an important one because I'm looking at the gold price, for example, our
- 6:08favourite, 3,999.
- 6:11I haven't seen a three in front of the gold price for a long time.
- 6:15Yeah, we joked back in the days when when the gold price went above $5,000, and I
- 6:21still made the
- 6:22joke and said, remember the days when gold was trading below $5,000?
- 6:27And little did we know, making that joke that we would be sitting before the end of
- 6:31June, not back below
- 6:33$5,000, but actually back below $4,000.
- 6:35Now, I think it's an healthy retracement because we know why the gold price
- 6:41actually did what it did.
- 6:43And we often have this conversation.
- 6:45I still believe that we should see a stronger gold price compared to
- 6:52two, three years ago.
- 6:54But I think what we've seen in the beginning of the year, and I've often said
- 6:57this as well, was a bit of an overdone movement.
- 6:59We've had this sort of worry on the dollar.
- 7:04And then we had the war that broke out between the U.S.
- 7:09and Iran, the Strait and all those, the geopolitical unrest.
- 7:13And that's sort of exactly what...
- 7:15actually increased the exuberance around gold, just didn't take it just to $4,000,
- 7:22it took it way over $5,000.
- 7:24Maybe just overdone, and maybe this is a healthy retracement.
- 7:27I still believe, and I still maintain the fact that I still believe that the gold
- 7:32price should stay
- 7:34stronger or higher, not just because of geopolitical unrest,
- 7:41but purely because Donald Trump has made it clear.
- 7:44I mean, he wants to see interest rates come down, not up.
- 7:48Remember, this dollar movement is really to do with people are expecting, and you
- 7:53can see the movement in some of these
- 7:55rates is upwards, and that's bringing some positivity around the dollar.
- 8:01If the market is going to realize that Donald Trump, somewhere along the line, is
- 8:04going to turn around and say, wait a minute, what did I say at the beginning of
- 8:08the year?
- 8:09I wonder how long it'll take before he turns on Kevin Walsh, just like he...
- 8:13Turned on Powell, the former Fed chair, excuse me, because he turns on people.
- 8:19You know, he's done it to Giorgio Maloney, the PM of Italy.
- 8:24He's done it to Keir Starmer, still the prime minister of the United Kingdom, but
- 8:31he's resigned.
- 8:32He's done it to Netanyahu, most importantly.
- 8:35He does it.
- 8:36He brings people into the fold, and if they step out of line one time, according
- 8:40to his parameters, that's it.
- 8:41It's all over for you.
- 8:43Kevin Walsh will be next, I reckon.
- 8:45Yeah, I think there's going to be some pressure.
- 8:47I think there's going to be some pressure.
- 8:50And I've got no doubt that there's going to be pressure because, yes, we now see
- 8:55the oil price retracing,
- 8:57and that should bring some relief, you know, some relief.
- 9:00I mean, it's still not really at low levels that we've seen two, three months
- 9:07ago,
- 9:08before the war started.
- 9:09That said, you know...
- 9:12That's not the only problem.
- 9:13I mean, he's sitting with a high inflationary environment.
- 9:16Yes, maybe it's just transitory.
- 9:18Maybe it will retrace.
- 9:19But if Kevin Walsh reacts the way he should be doing, he should be raising, and
- 9:25I think, or hiking
- 9:26rates, I think it's going to be very interesting if that doesn't happen, what
- 9:31Trump says.
- 9:33I think he wants rates to come down.
- 9:36I think he would want rates to come down a lot.
- 9:40It's because of his personal portfolio and his business, his so-called empire's
- 9:45portfolio as well.
- 9:46They need they're geared to the hilt, so they need lower rates.
- 9:50And he's a two-bit property developer.
- 9:55We know that, and that's what they love.
- 9:56They love lower interest rates.
- 9:59Scott, the other thing I wanted to mention was the market They're being talked down
- 10:04by the media.
- 10:05And I don't usually say this, but it seems as though everybody wants AI to fail.
- 10:10They come up with some good points.
- 10:11They say, well, the cost of borrowing is going to go up.
- 10:14And these talking about being geared to the amount of money that the big tech
- 10:18companies are borrowing in order to keep up
- 10:21with their peers when it comes to AI investment.
- 10:24The numbers are staggering.
- 10:25And if something does happen, then the wishes of these people that think there's
- 10:29an AI bubble.
- 10:31on the Nasdaq and other exchanges, they might actually get their wish.
- 10:35Because it just got a different feeling on Monday when I saw the market start to
- 10:42come off.
- 10:42They weren't big moves, but they weren't rallying back straight away.
- 10:47There was a tentative rally from the lows that we saw Monday, Tuesday.
- 10:51And we're seeing that again today.
- 10:52It just has a different feel about it.
- 10:54What do you think?
- 10:56I mean, yesterday's move and that micron.
- 11:00That was sort of a, I really got this deja vu feeling of 25 years ago.
- 11:08Did you follow it yesterday?
- 11:10I saw the movement and I've seen today as well.
- 11:13Aren't Micron's results coming out today or tomorrow?
- 11:15Yeah, it's today.
- 11:16It's today.
- 11:17It's after the close of it was taken.
- 11:19But it was down something like 19%, 18% yesterday.
- 11:25I mean, that's a crazy, crazy drop.
- 11:28In one company that went over a trillion dollar market cap a few weeks ago, I mean,
- 11:35on this whole AI exuberance.
- 11:38I mean, I couldn't help but laugh this morning when I opened up, I can't
- 11:44remember, it must have been something on
- 11:45investing.com or something like that.
- 11:47And the headline was SpaceX down 22% from its highs.
- 11:53Yes.
- 11:54I went like, wait a minute.
- 11:55Didn't SpaceX, you know...
- 11:58list a week and a half ago.
- 12:01They are already telling us it's 22% down from its price.
- 12:05It's in a bear market.
- 12:06It's in a bear market.
- 12:08It's been listed for a week.
- 12:11Exactly.
- 12:12And that's the thing that's sort of making me worry.
- 12:17This is so and I think that the next part of the sentence was, but shareholders are
- 12:23not worried
- 12:24yet.
- 12:26I would be worried.
- 12:27I mean, why the excessive movements?
- 12:32Why did we see this type of exuberance run out?
- 12:35And why would you see these pullbacks?
- 12:37Why do you see Micron go surpass being a $1 trillion company?
- 12:43Movements of, I think, 100-something percent over a month or so.
- 12:47Oh, yeah, I've got it.
- 12:48It's actually Micron.
- 12:50In three months' time, it is up.
- 12:53163, that's even after yesterday's major retracement.
- 12:56163% up in three months, six months, 263%.
- 13:03One year, wait for it, 713% in one year.
- 13:09Get out, goodness me.
- 13:10Yes, $1 trillion company.
- 13:13Tell me this market is seeing some natural movements.
- 13:18You're quite right.
- 13:19So we look back and we say, we should have known.
- 13:21We should have been more.
- 13:22forceful in our opinions on the podcast on the five o'clock shadow because we knew
- 13:27that this something was wrong it's just the
- 13:29timing you see as i said to a couple of other commentators a few weeks ago i said
- 13:33it's all very well you being long of everything and your geniuses
- 13:36to my eyes they are because the sort of numbers they were talking about for their
- 13:40clients were quite staggering um
- 13:43but the real the real key now is when to say that's enough i'm taking money off the
- 13:48table because they were both saying to
- 13:50me They just got to run with it until otherwise advised.
- 13:53Yeah.
- 13:54So when is someone otherwise going to advise you or me that it is going to
- 13:58happen?
- 13:59Because that's the genius of a bull market.
- 14:02It's not playing the bull market.
- 14:05It's assessing when the turn is going to be.
- 14:08Yeah.
- 14:09That's two words.
- 14:09There's two words.
- 14:10And we can end off with that.
- 14:11And that's the two words called active management.
- 14:15It's really easy if you're in some passive.
- 14:18And again, this is not a… passive versus active management, let's call it
- 14:24conversation or even debate.
- 14:27This is just saying that somewhere along the line, this market will turn from a
- 14:31more easy, passively managed
- 14:34market, trend-wise, versus where the active managers will actually do their job
- 14:40and get paid for that
- 14:41as well.
- 14:42Yeah, it's going to be a fun time.
- 14:43Okay, what's happened on the JSC?
- 14:45I've been busy with lots of other things.
- 14:48what's happened on the jse recently corporate wise stock exchange news service
- 14:53in other words The news
- 14:55was it's really thin.
- 14:57We're now out of reporting season.
- 15:00We had Standard Bank hint earlier this week on a trading statement.
- 15:08We had NetBank doing a similar thing today.
- 15:13So there's been no real news that came out.
- 15:16So from a news point of view, it's been very, very, very quiet.
- 15:20But because we report every six months, this is the quiet season.
- 15:25But massive movements.
- 15:26I mean, we can start with a resource index that's down over 5% today.
- 15:32That's a massive movement, really, really massive movement.
- 15:37Tell me about property.
- 15:42It's still been doing well.
- 15:45I'm just saying because it looks to me, unless my screen is incorrect or out of
- 15:49date or something.
- 15:50There seems to be two or three property companies in the top 10 movers on the
- 15:53upside today on the JSC.
- 15:55Is that correct?
- 15:56Yes, that is correct.
- 15:58We had a very update coming from GrowthPoint.
- 16:04Didn't look bad, neither here nor there.
- 16:07Just this mention that the dividend growth is expected to stay between 6% and
- 16:128%.
- 16:14We had some guidance and market was sort of flattish.
- 16:18But in a day...
- 16:20where the JSE dropped by over 1.6% in a day and it's a property remained flat.
- 16:26You mean this, you can clearly see that there's some resilience.
- 16:30It's still a fairly positive environment for them.
- 16:33And I think if looking forward, looking through the fog, if we could see a
- 16:39stabilization
- 16:41in the oil price, we could see a big, big drop.
- 16:46I mean, when I say big, I mean really big drop.
- 16:50next month in the petrol price and diesel prices in Africa.
- 16:54And if it stays at these current levels, we could see a further drop again in
- 16:59August.
- 16:59That should suddenly put the ESSA Reserve Bank in a scenario where I usually say,
- 17:05remember a rate
- 17:06hike or rate cut usually lasts average 33 months.
- 17:10We might be in a situation where Gafanjau say, well, I'm focused on this 3%.
- 17:17And clearly if the oil price...
- 17:19do drop and the petrol price do retrace and we see inflation be under control hey
- 17:24nothing prohibits me you know
- 17:26retracing again and and start cutting again um and that's good for property
- 17:31stocks because they healed you look at their dividend
- 17:33deals or interest yields they're still still relatively high okay scalp let's
- 17:38have a look at some prices um
- 17:41because we've covered some quite deep subjects so let's get down to some deep
- 17:45data now with the dollar round at 1658.
- 17:48I've got the euro round at 18.83, British pound against the round 21.83, euro dollar
- 17:551.13.50.
- 17:59I've still got a horrible idea that my screen is catching up having been down
- 18:04earlier today.
- 18:05But anyway, I'll go on to gold.
- 18:07It's bounced back since we've been speaking to 4,013 from 39.99 at 5 o'clock.
- 18:124,013 now but still down 2.3%.
- 18:16On the white metals, I've got platinum, a near 5% loser at 15.81.
- 18:21Goodness me.
- 18:22And palladium at 11.77, down 5.3%.
- 18:26Yeah, 11.77.
- 18:29So that's a white metal complex.
- 18:30The platinum group metals, horrible.
- 18:32And that's not good for South Africa, of course.
- 18:35Sticking with commodities, I mentioned oil at the beginning.
- 18:39West Texas crude is...
- 18:414.5% weaker, a little bounce back in progress at $69.92.
- 18:45And Brent crude oil is $73.49, which is down 4.2%.
- 18:51The copper price is below $6 a pound.
- 18:54It's now $5.96.
- 18:55This was $6.40 a couple of days ago, $6.40.
- 18:58Big moves there, down nearly 3% on the day.
- 19:02S&P 500 futures, $74.83.
- 19:06That's for the September delivery, up 0.6%.
- 19:09you The US 10-year, 4.41.
- 19:13That's an eight basis point fall.
- 19:14It was flirting with 4.50 for 36 hours or so, now flirting with 4.40.
- 19:20And the South African 10-year bond behaving itself quite well.
- 19:228.44, which is six basis points weaker than the close last night.
- 19:27Bitcoin's having a horrible time.
- 19:29It's below 61,000 now.
- 19:33Far less than the peak we saw of 125,000, Skalk, in October.
- 19:39That was when Mr.
- 19:39Trump announced his family crypto.
- 19:42You called this one also very well, eh?
- 19:45You called this one.
- 19:46It wasn't based on anything apart from I don't understand it and I don't like the
- 19:50people that pretend they do.
- 19:51So I thought, no.
- 19:52And it's going to zero.
- 19:53It's going on my list.
- 19:54It's going to nothing.
- 19:54I think it's going to 20,000 personally.
- 19:57Yeah, I remember you said that.
- 20:00So, Scott, tell me about the moves on the upside and the downside on the JSC on your
- 20:05much more accurate list, please.
- 20:07So, when we look at the JSE each day, let's quickly just, I don't want to say
- 20:11refresh my screen, but just get to it.
- 20:14When you look at the downside, we had Impala, sorry, yeah, Impala Platinum,
- 20:188.35% down.
- 20:20Tungela, 7% down.
- 20:22Northern Platinum, 6.5%.
- 20:25Volterra, 6.2%.
- 20:27And, yeah, well, the first non, let's call it a softer commodity, Sasol down
- 20:335.8%.
- 20:34I'm going to continue and just throw in my...
- 20:36My favorite, favorite, goldfields, that's also down 5.7% for today.
- 20:41So, oh, bad day, bad day for the diggers.
- 20:45And only six days to go to the end of the quarter, the end of the month, end of the
- 20:50quarter, end of the half year.
- 20:51There'll be a few nervous statements going out from fund managers, I'm afraid.
- 20:58Yeah, no, it's going to be a tough one because there's a few of these companies
- 21:04that's...
- 21:06Got quite large exposures to these miners.
- 21:08But yeah, here's your answer.
- 21:10I mean, on the positive side, Hammerson today, 3.73% positive.
- 21:17Nice.
- 21:17Shaftesbury Capital, that is up 3.7%.
- 21:24And now you get to more normal stocks.
- 21:26Vodacom, that was up 3.3%.

- 21:52Is it all over?
- 21:53Or will it all turn around?
- 21:56Just like the predictions of interest rates might soon become not to the upside,
- 22:02but to the
- 22:03downside if the oil price keeps on going.
- 22:05There could be a swift turnaround.
- 22:06But anyway, it's going to be very, very interesting.
