- 0:00Speaker 1: So we know it was an incredibly busy weekend and
- 0:03Speaker 1: the annual Freend's Partial Show was held over the weekend,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and you may have noticed that some things are a
- 0:09Speaker 1: little bit different maybe to what they have been in
- 0:11Speaker 1: previous years. I'm joined on the show by chairman Shirley Preston.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Good morning to you, Shirley.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 0:19Speaker 1: How did the show go on the weekend?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Shirley? We were so happy, you know, we had a
- 0:25Speaker 2: lot of support. It was a smaller show and we
- 0:28Speaker 2: knew that because the COVID impact, many siteholders couldn't come.
- 0:32Speaker 2: They wanted to come, they couldn't come to they didn't
- 0:34Speaker 2: have staff and made you know, but apart from that,
- 0:38Speaker 2: it was a smaller show. We're in the side show
- 0:41Speaker 2: early and the feedback we got from the people at
- 0:45Speaker 2: the show was they didn't miss it. Probably those people
- 0:47Speaker 2: who missed it didn't come, but those who are out
- 0:49Speaker 2: the show said, we didn't miss it. Less money to spend.
- 0:53Speaker 2: The kids actually had a wonderful time with everything else
- 0:55Speaker 2: that was here.
- 0:56Speaker 1: So Shirley, how like, how did you go in terms
- 0:59Speaker 1: of in terms of the numbers, were they a bit
- 1:01Speaker 1: lower than previous years or were they still pretty good.
- 1:05Speaker 2: No lower than previous years, and we expaid that with
- 1:08Speaker 2: a two year hiatus and yeah, and COVID still having
- 1:11Speaker 2: quite an impact on the community of people, you know,
- 1:14Speaker 2: still having it or not wanting to go out. So yeah,
- 1:18Speaker 2: numbers were lower, but we reached our target, so we're happy.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Surely is the Freight's Pass Rural Show now the first
- 1:26Speaker 1: show that's sort of gotten back underway post COVID for
- 1:31Speaker 1: the territory last year.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Last year Darwin Show and Catherine Show managed to they.
- 1:37Speaker 1: Did still, Yeah, that's right.
- 1:38Speaker 2: They got and Bori little show. They got the right
- 1:41Speaker 2: windows between the COVID lockdowns and whatever, and yeah, so
- 1:47Speaker 2: they managed to speak him.
- 1:48Speaker 1: They got Lucky I reckon surely because it was bloody hard,
- 1:51Speaker 1: wasn't it for so many events, you know, trying to
- 1:54Speaker 1: still get things off the ground. Surely you mentioned that
- 1:57Speaker 1: there was no side show Ellie Ali and so no,
- 1:59Speaker 1: right had no showbags? Were people? Were people disappointed or
- 2:02Speaker 1: they weren't too concerned?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Now they weren't too concerned. And we did have showbags
- 2:08Speaker 2: in a different way. Yeah, but there was one store
- 2:10Speaker 2: that does sell showbag but they're not the lolly type,
- 2:13Speaker 2: you know, they're more they're costume and fuzzy hair and
- 2:18Speaker 2: novelty type yep. And then we had our own show bag,
- 2:20Speaker 2: which is our out back track bag which the children
- 2:24Speaker 2: get a gift at all the stores they go to
- 2:26Speaker 2: and they get their stamp and get a free gift
- 2:28Speaker 2: along there. So there I still had interesting those sort
- 2:33Speaker 2: of things where a child could get a show bag
- 2:35Speaker 2: if they really were.
- 2:36Speaker 1: And and my understanding is that there was heaps of
- 2:38Speaker 1: beautiful animals out there to see as well. And I guess,
- 2:42Speaker 1: you know, it sounds to me like it was a
- 2:44Speaker 1: show that had a bit more like a bit of
- 2:46Speaker 1: a different focus. I suppose then you know, then the
- 2:49Speaker 1: rides yep.
- 2:50Speaker 2: That's right. So it really felt so communal, I know,
- 2:55Speaker 2: a real rural communal thing without them. You know that
- 3:00Speaker 2: sometimes that commercial element that's around side show ali distract
- 3:05Speaker 2: from what an agricultural show is about, like being a
- 3:08Speaker 2: rural showcase for the local produce, the local arts and
- 3:12Speaker 2: craft and local producers and local businesses in their wares
- 3:16Speaker 2: and what they do. And so the concentration was on
- 3:19Speaker 2: that and people loved it.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And Shirley, do you reckon you know moving forward in
- 3:24Speaker 1: coming years? Do you think that you'll wind up like,
- 3:26Speaker 1: do you think that you'll continue down this path or
- 3:28Speaker 1: do you think that you will reintroduce some of the
- 3:30Speaker 1: rides and and you know, some of that commercial element again.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Well, if I've been following any of the news stories,
- 3:40Speaker 2: getting insuance for the carnival people is getting harder and
- 3:44Speaker 2: harder on up three d percent or something like that.
- 3:48Speaker 2: So whether there's any rides for agricultural shows and the
- 3:51Speaker 2: future is still a bit dicey on my fraid. So anyway,
- 3:55Speaker 2: we'll take it as it comes. And yeah, we've got
- 3:57Speaker 2: to do our full review of how it all went
- 4:00Speaker 2: and make that decision at an Adelaide time. I guess
- 4:03Speaker 2: if it happens that we don't have them again, we'll
- 4:06Speaker 2: know that we can still put on a great show. Yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Gee, that's interesting, isn't it. You know that insurance, that
- 4:12Speaker 1: insurance factory, and is that the reason why for this
- 4:15Speaker 1: year for you guys, they weren't there?
- 4:18Speaker 2: Yep, that was one reason. But there was also work
- 4:21Speaker 2: safe regulations that another provider wasn't able to meet, that
- 4:26Speaker 2: they were working posed on them in the last minute
- 4:29Speaker 2: and that it couldn't meet those so they have to cancel.
- 4:32Speaker 2: So yeah, it's the things beyond our control.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Yeah, but surely all in all, sounds like it was
- 4:38Speaker 1: a successful year for the Fred's Past Rural Show.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yep, yep, we're very happy.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Oh good stuff. Do you have any idea of exactly
- 4:46Speaker 1: how many people you did get through the gates?
- 4:50Speaker 2: We've got some figures on that that are not final
- 4:53Speaker 2: because we haven't in all of these other things with
- 4:57Speaker 2: smaller smaller than we have had in the well.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Shirley, lovely to speak with you this morning. Well done
- 5:04Speaker 1: to all of the organizers. I know it would be
- 5:06Speaker 1: a lot of work getting something like the Friend's Partial
- 5:09Speaker 1: show up and running. So good on you guys. Sounds
- 5:12Speaker 1: like it was a good weekend, Yeah it was.
- 5:15Speaker 2: It was a bit hot week it.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Would have been. Was it hot for the animals as well?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Mostly the smaller animals, but with the chickens, yeah, not
- 5:28Speaker 2: the large one and the catal so much. Yeah, smaller ones.
- 5:34Speaker 2: But as far as I know, we didn't have any
- 5:36Speaker 2: casualties in apartment. Yeah, which possibility here.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yeah, all that's hope the dry season finally arrives. Hey,
- 5:45Speaker 1: we're we're hoping it was here on the weekend, But
- 5:47Speaker 1: it was a bit hot.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Oh Shirley, good to chat with you this morning. Thank
- 5:53Speaker 1: you so much for your time.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Thank you very much, Thanks for your support, no worries,
- 5:59Speaker 2: Thanks Shirley,
