- 2:25Speaker 5: the night Watch out of homicide detail.
- 2:27Speaker 6: My partner's Ed Jacobs. The boss is stad Brown, Chief
- 2:29Speaker 6: of Detectives.
- 2:30Speaker 7: My name is Friday.
- 2:31Speaker 5: I was on the way back from dinner and it
- 2:33Speaker 5: was nine fifty seven pm when I got back to
- 2:35Speaker 5: the City Hall Room forty two pharmacide detail.
- 2:38Speaker 3: All right, make it in time.
- 2:40Speaker 7: No, they were closed up.
- 2:41Speaker 3: It's too bad.
- 2:42Speaker 7: Why Gee cafeteria down the street.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I was terrible, nothing at all.
- 2:45Speaker 6: Huh Well, I figured.
- 2:46Speaker 5: I'd be safe for the corn beef hash even that
- 2:48Speaker 5: wasn't much soggy, you know, probably standing all day.
- 2:52Speaker 3: It's too bad.
- 2:53Speaker 8: I asked Johnny if you'd stay open a couple of
- 2:54Speaker 8: minutes late, told him you were coming right over.
- 2:56Speaker 6: The place was closed tight. When I got there, I
- 2:58Speaker 6: couldn't raise anybody.
- 3:00Speaker 8: Sharp lives a really good tonight. Some great pie too,
- 3:02Speaker 8: boys and berry best I had anyway for them.
- 3:05Speaker 7: Say you got any of those bike car pills in
- 3:07Speaker 7: your locker? I can sure you use one.
- 3:08Speaker 8: I'm afraid not. You had the last one to Jeane
- 3:10Speaker 8: Bechdel tonight. He hit at the cafeteria too. I hi,
- 3:15Speaker 8: say any phone calls for me? Murial downstairs office called
- 3:19Speaker 8: run you asked for They got it ready.
- 3:21Speaker 6: It was the only call. Yeah, what is it else?
- 3:24Speaker 6: I'm wrong? Oh?
- 3:26Speaker 7: You've been moping around like you lost your best friend.
- 3:28Speaker 7: What's the matter? You man at the world?
- 3:29Speaker 6: No, just my young loss. Wife had her father and
- 3:31Speaker 6: mother over for lunch today. The old man's getting to
- 3:33Speaker 6: be a real pain in the neck. Don't get along
- 3:35Speaker 6: with him, uh, I keep trying to. Doesn't seem to
- 3:37Speaker 6: do much good. All he can think of his money.
- 3:38Speaker 6: It's all he can talk about while.
- 3:40Speaker 8: Let it boy, you my in law has been talking
- 3:42Speaker 8: about it for years, forgetting you won't let you.
- 3:43Speaker 6: And then he puts his foot inside the front door.
- 3:45Speaker 6: It's the first thing you hear. Crusty old guy, that pipe.
- 3:48Speaker 6: He smokes enough to knock you over.
- 3:49Speaker 7: Why don't you duck out when they come over? Tell
- 3:51Speaker 7: him you got a call. You have to go to work.
- 3:52Speaker 6: The wife sounded that once. She makes me hang around,
- 3:54Speaker 6: keeps telling me your father and mother like me. You
- 3:56Speaker 6: never know what. The old guy's a real tyrant.
- 3:58Speaker 2: See.
- 3:59Speaker 6: The wife comes from a big family. Every time I
- 4:01Speaker 6: see her, old man he has to make a point
- 4:02Speaker 6: of telling me how smart as other sons in law?
- 4:04Speaker 6: How much doll I'm making? Yeah, see yeah, same routine.
- 4:08Speaker 6: Every time one of his daughter's married a carpenter, he's
- 4:10Speaker 6: making twenty dollars a day. When I'm married a hot carrier,
- 4:12Speaker 6: he's making twenty five dollars a day. Always ends up
- 4:15Speaker 6: asking me how much I'm making.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Why don't you tell himuch? Some of his business I
- 4:18Speaker 3: did today?
- 4:18Speaker 6: That's what started the argument. I walked out, crusty old guy.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, well I got it.
- 4:24Speaker 6: Homicide fiddy, yes, black?
- 4:31Speaker 7: Would you repeat yes, sir, I have it fine, thank you?
- 4:34Speaker 9: Yes?
- 4:34Speaker 7: Or right away? Shooting Kirkman near l Pine.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Let me grab my coat.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Nos Man down on the sidewalk, apparently hurt. Bad neighbor
- 4:42Speaker 5: said it was a family fight. Tomorrow we better hustle
- 4:44Speaker 5: it out.
- 4:44Speaker 6: Let's go. That's one good thing about this job.
- 4:50Speaker 7: What do you mean trouble?
- 4:51Speaker 6: You don't know what it is to hear about other.
- 4:52Speaker 5: People's Sergeant al Shambra and I go out to the scene,
- 5:00Speaker 5: of the shooting Code three.
- 5:01Speaker 7: Red light and siren.
- 5:03Speaker 5: We located the victim lying on the sidewalk approximately fifty
- 5:06Speaker 5: feet from the intersection of Kirkland Avenue and Alpine Street.
- 5:10Speaker 5: He was a dark haired man, looked to be in
- 5:11Speaker 5: his early forties, tan complexion, well built. He'd been shot
- 5:15Speaker 5: several times in the chest, once in the shoulder. He
- 5:18Speaker 5: appeared to be unconscious. A handful of curious neighbors were
- 5:21Speaker 5: standing by. One of them, a short, bawling man, identified
- 5:24Speaker 5: himself as Ernest. Quickly, he said he was the victim's
- 5:26Speaker 5: next door neighbor.
- 5:27Speaker 3: What's man's name, mister Whitley?
- 5:29Speaker 6: Wally Radford lives right next door to me, been my
- 5:31Speaker 6: neighbor for years.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Where do you live?
- 5:33Speaker 6: This apartment court right here? I live in the cottage
- 5:35Speaker 6: next to the end when they're number eight, while he
- 5:37Speaker 6: lives at number nine one, right in the end they're
- 5:40Speaker 6: facing this.
- 5:41Speaker 7: Yeah. What do you know about the shooting, mister Whitley?
- 5:43Speaker 6: Well, I didn't have anything to do with it. I
- 5:45Speaker 6: was watching television with a wife. I heard the shots outside.
- 5:48Speaker 6: You can ask the wife.
- 5:48Speaker 7: Sh'll tell you you heard the shots outside of Radford's cottage.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Right, yeah, that's right. Where's that was to come?
- 5:54Speaker 3: They've been notified there on the way.
- 5:56Speaker 7: Well, who did the shooting, Whitley, would you know that?
- 5:58Speaker 6: Well, not for sure. We were watching television, like I said,
- 6:01Speaker 6: when I heard the shots, wife and I. At first
- 6:04Speaker 6: I heard the shots, and then I heard somebody yell.
- 6:06Speaker 6: I thought it was some high school kids in a
- 6:08Speaker 6: hot rod or something, you know, horse around outside. My
- 6:10Speaker 6: wife told me to get up and take a look anyway,
- 6:12Speaker 6: so I did.
- 6:13Speaker 7: On the way to the door, I.
- 6:14Speaker 6: Heard another shot, and then somebody yelled out again like
- 6:17Speaker 6: they were hurt. Must have been six or seven shots anyway.
- 6:20Speaker 6: Just as I opened the door, I saw Wally go
- 6:22Speaker 6: running fast. I didn't know what was coming off. He
- 6:24Speaker 6: ran right out toward the street here weaving back and forth.
- 6:27Speaker 6: Looked like it had a couple of drinks. I didn't
- 6:29Speaker 6: know what it was.
- 6:30Speaker 3: You didn't see the actual shooting. You didn't see anyone
- 6:32Speaker 3: with a gun?
- 6:33Speaker 6: Oh No, The only one I saw was Wally. He
- 6:35Speaker 6: ran right by me, holding his hands up to his chest.
- 6:38Speaker 6: I yelled to him, but he didn't stop. I didn't
- 6:40Speaker 6: know if he was drunk or what. When he got
- 6:42Speaker 6: out here to the sidewalk. I saw him fall down.
- 6:44Speaker 6: I went after him. It's terrible, say either one. You
- 6:49Speaker 6: got to smoke. Yeah, look I'm still shaking like a leaf.
- 6:53Speaker 6: There you go, swell, thank you.
- 6:58Speaker 7: All the life.
- 6:58Speaker 6: Yeah, please, you're welcome.
- 7:04Speaker 7: Was Radford still conscious when you reached him, you.
- 7:06Speaker 6: Know, just about? Yeah? I don't know how many times
- 7:09Speaker 6: he was shot. He was rolling around on the ground.
- 7:11Speaker 6: Pain was terrible. The whole front of his shirt was
- 7:13Speaker 6: all stained. I yelled to Mike Desmond, one of the
- 7:16Speaker 6: other neighbors. He called you, fellas good Redford, saying anything
- 7:19Speaker 6: to you how it happened. We kept moaning about the pain.
- 7:22Speaker 6: That made me sick. It was a relief when he
- 7:24Speaker 6: passed out.
- 7:25Speaker 7: Did he tell you how it happened?
- 7:26Speaker 6: Yeah? His wife. I figured that was it when I
- 7:28Speaker 6: saw it was wrong with him.
- 7:29Speaker 7: He told you his wife shot him.
- 7:31Speaker 6: Oh, they had a big fight today. Wiley and his
- 7:32Speaker 6: wife started this afternoon. Been going on all day, all night,
- 7:35Speaker 6: yelling at each other, throwing things around. I never expected this, though.
- 7:39Speaker 6: Something must to snapped. She must be out of her mind.
- 7:41Speaker 6: Where's his wife now?
- 7:42Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 7:43Speaker 6: It's still back in their cottage. I guess I've been
- 7:44Speaker 6: here since the shooting. I didn't see her leave.
- 7:46Speaker 9: Joe.
- 7:47Speaker 6: Yeah, we got our hands full.
- 7:48Speaker 7: Now.
- 7:48Speaker 6: What he done was talking one of the neighbor women
- 7:50Speaker 6: back in the court here, she said to missus Radford
- 7:52Speaker 6: wanted her about five minutes ago, identified herself as the
- 7:54Speaker 6: victim's wife, Cottage number nine, mus Radford went with a
- 7:57Speaker 6: neighborhood and she said she was giving fair warnings. She
- 7:59Speaker 6: wanted to pass the world. What do you mean, She's
- 8:01Speaker 6: going to kill anybody that comes.
- 8:02Speaker 5: After ten twenty eight pm, the ambulance arrived and the
- 8:10Speaker 5: attendants administered first aid to the victim of the shooting,
- 8:12Speaker 5: Wallace Radford, before he was rushed to Georgia Street Receiving
- 8:15Speaker 5: Hospital for further treatment. Radford regained consciousness long enough to
- 8:19Speaker 5: confirm the fact that it was his wife who shot him.
- 8:21Speaker 5: That was about all he could tell us before the
- 8:23Speaker 5: sedatives took effect. The two officers and two of the
- 8:26Speaker 5: radio cars which were standing by, were detailed to keep
- 8:28Speaker 5: the crowd away from the apartment court where the shooting
- 8:30Speaker 5: took place, in particular Cottage nine, where the Radfords lived.
- 8:34Speaker 5: The blinds were drawn in the house. There were no
- 8:36Speaker 5: lights showing. We called the Radford cottage on the poem,
- 8:39Speaker 5: but there was no answer. Al Shambra and Ed circled
- 8:42Speaker 5: around and back for a closer.
- 8:43Speaker 7: Look at the place.
- 8:44Speaker 5: I continued interviewing the Radford's next door neighbor, Ernest Quidley.
- 8:48Speaker 6: I guess I should have known it had come to
- 8:50Speaker 6: this someday. We'd have been fighting lately. Wally and his
- 8:52Speaker 6: wife have been there nothing but wrangling day and they.
- 8:55Speaker 7: Were You any idea where missus Radford got the gun.
- 8:57Speaker 6: She must have used Wally's. I guess don't know where
- 8:59Speaker 6: else she gets her hands on one.
- 9:00Speaker 7: He keeps a gun in the house, does he?
- 9:02Speaker 6: Yeah, as long as they've known to me. It's thirty
- 9:03Speaker 6: eight automatic. I don't know to make them?
- 9:05Speaker 7: Do you happen to know if Missus Radford was used
- 9:07Speaker 7: to handling the gun?
- 9:08Speaker 6: No, a typical woman. I remember Wally and Stella were
- 9:11Speaker 6: over for cards one night.
- 9:12Speaker 7: Stella, that's missus Radford.
- 9:14Speaker 6: I don't know how it came up, but Wally and
- 9:16Speaker 6: Stella started arguing about him keeping a gun in the house.
- 9:18Speaker 6: Stella didn't like it a bit, said she was afraid
- 9:20Speaker 6: of guns, didn't even like to have him around. That
- 9:23Speaker 6: surprise you even knew how to pull a trigger.
- 9:25Speaker 7: You said, the Radford's had a big fight today. What
- 9:27Speaker 7: was it about?
- 9:27Speaker 6: You had to know single thing. I guess Stella was
- 9:30Speaker 6: always accusing Wally a running around with other women, run
- 9:33Speaker 6: around town drinking. As far as I know, it wasn't true.
- 9:35Speaker 6: Matter of fact, it was just the opposite. If anybody
- 9:38Speaker 6: was on the town, it was Stella. I have at
- 9:40Speaker 6: least one guy she was making eyes at. Oh, she's
- 9:43Speaker 6: your friends.
- 9:43Speaker 7: Why what to look like?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Not good? House is pitch dark? An't there anyone moving
- 9:46Speaker 3: around inside?
- 9:47Speaker 6: It won't be easy to get out of that shoe.
- 9:48Speaker 6: The way the cottage is situated.
- 9:49Speaker 7: Wow, what's the problem?
- 9:50Speaker 6: The rere of the housebacks up against that hill. There
- 9:52Speaker 6: there was a small space between the end of the
- 9:54Speaker 6: house and the hill, and no back door. Just windows.
- 9:56Speaker 6: One of them's open a few inches.
- 9:57Speaker 7: I mean, the front door is the only way in
- 9:59Speaker 7: the place.
- 9:59Speaker 3: I on the left the house or left hand side.
- 10:02Speaker 6: That's a kitchen door. Sorry, at least right in the kitchen,
- 10:04Speaker 6: just like our place. All the cottages laid out.
- 10:06Speaker 7: The same living rooms just inside the front door. They know, Yeah,
- 10:08Speaker 7: that's right.
- 10:09Speaker 6: Bedroom's in the right rear kitchen and the left rear
- 10:11Speaker 6: a small bathroom leading off the bedroom.
- 10:13Speaker 7: Least the left.
- 10:14Speaker 6: She won't come out peasibly. How about a two guys
- 10:16Speaker 6: show that ought to bring her up?
- 10:17Speaker 7: Well, I don't know if we'll need today. I might
- 10:18Speaker 7: be a waste of time.
- 10:19Speaker 5: Whitley here was just telling you, missus, Radford isn't familiar
- 10:21Speaker 5: with guns. Do you think you know how to reload
- 10:24Speaker 5: the automatically?
- 10:25Speaker 6: No, sir, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't. I don't even
- 10:27Speaker 6: know if Wally had another clip of shells around the house.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Even if you did, Stella wouldn't know.
- 10:31Speaker 7: What to do with it.
- 10:32Speaker 8: How about to clip the s all ready thing? On
- 10:33Speaker 8: the chance you got a couple of shells left.
- 10:35Speaker 6: She fired more than half a dozen of them. I
- 10:37Speaker 6: know that she must have gone crazy. They were at
- 10:38Speaker 6: least seven or eight shots just about empty in the gun.
- 10:41Speaker 7: How about it?
- 10:42Speaker 5: You want to try rushing the place, Let's go kide
- 10:43Speaker 5: me all right. You better stay out here for the
- 10:46Speaker 5: time being, mister Whitley might be some shooting. You know
- 10:48Speaker 5: that you'd take any chances?
- 10:49Speaker 7: Yes, for sure.
- 10:49Speaker 6: Okay, So I'll be right back here if you want.
- 10:52Speaker 7: Thank you very much, all right? Let's try it.
- 10:55Speaker 3: How do you want to handle it?
- 10:57Speaker 6: Why don't you and I'll take the side door. I'll
- 10:59Speaker 6: go in the front. I want to see if we
- 11:00Speaker 6: get a rise out of her first.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I might be sure to give it up without
- 11:04Speaker 7: a fight. I'll call out to her a couple of
- 11:06Speaker 7: times first. If there's no answer, we'll rush the place.
- 11:08Speaker 6: Okay, now, let's.
- 11:09Speaker 7: Make it all together. I just wait for a signal.
- 11:11Speaker 8: I'll call it aut right, okay, all right, sid, I'll
- 11:15Speaker 8: do it just behind the shrub over there. There's a
- 11:17Speaker 8: little time to get around.
- 11:18Speaker 7: Huh. Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Know when I call out to rush, make it fast.
- 11:21Speaker 5: It's the only thing we've got in our favor. We'll
- 11:23Speaker 5: try and surprise you, right, say you'll have bab be careful.
- 11:29Speaker 7: That's Radford. There's Ratford.
- 11:32Speaker 9: Can you hear me?
- 11:34Speaker 7: Police officers got your place around it. I want you
- 11:37Speaker 7: to come out, can you hear me?
- 11:40Speaker 10: Miss Radford? We want you to come out, Miss Radford?
- 11:46Speaker 10: All right, let's go hit the door, go Joey?
- 11:56Speaker 9: All right?
- 11:56Speaker 7: Yeah? What about you and the kick and tempty? Okay,
- 11:58Speaker 7: just a minute? Living room's efty?
- 12:01Speaker 1: Not in here?
- 12:02Speaker 7: Add in the bedroom?
- 12:03Speaker 3: Nothing hair? Yeah, how about that? They go back, here
- 12:05Speaker 3: are you bedroom? Straight back?
- 12:07Speaker 7: All right, have a look when you check the bathroom.
- 12:11Speaker 3: In all the closet, everything, she's gone.
- 12:16Speaker 5: Ten forty six pm we double checked the cottage, all
- 12:19Speaker 5: the buildings and possible hiding places adjoining the Radford house,
- 12:22Speaker 5: and then we combed through the immediate neighborhood around the
- 12:24Speaker 5: apartment court. There was no trace of a suspect Stella Radford.
- 12:28Speaker 5: In the apartment. We found a picture which neighbors told
- 12:30Speaker 5: us was a good likeness of missus Radford. Al Shambra
- 12:33Speaker 5: got to a phone called the office and a local
- 12:35Speaker 5: broadcast and an APB was gotten out on her. We
- 12:38Speaker 5: figured she probably slipped out of the house without being
- 12:41Speaker 5: noticed during the general excitement immediately after the shooting. Her
- 12:45Speaker 5: phone called at one of the neighbors warning that she'd
- 12:47Speaker 5: kill anyone who came after her. Only served as a
- 12:49Speaker 5: stall to give her more time for a getaway. Ten
- 12:52Speaker 5: fifty five pm, Ray Pinker and the crime lab crew
- 12:55Speaker 5: arrived and began their preliminary investigation. Judging from the bloodstains
- 13:00Speaker 5: out on the furniture, in the rug, in the living
- 13:01Speaker 5: room and on the front steps of the cottage, Radford
- 13:04Speaker 5: had first been shot while he was in the living room,
- 13:06Speaker 5: and then apparently he ran out the front door to
- 13:08Speaker 5: escape the gunfire.
- 13:10Speaker 7: A trail of seven empty shells.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Ejected from a thirty eight caliber automatic seemed to indicate
- 13:14Speaker 5: that his wife followed him out the front door, still
- 13:16Speaker 5: firing at him as he tried to get away. We
- 13:19Speaker 5: checked the apartment court garage, but the Radford's car was
- 13:21Speaker 5: still there. We remained at the apartment court interviewing the
- 13:24Speaker 5: neighbors and trying to get a line on some of
- 13:27Speaker 5: Missus Radford's known friends and associates.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Joe, how'd you make a much ol neighbor I talked.
- 13:32Speaker 7: To, hardly even knew the Radford's How about.
- 13:34Speaker 6: You that much better? You're in the apartment up the
- 13:36Speaker 6: way named Joanne Taylor. She told me she knew Radford's
- 13:38Speaker 6: wife fairly well. Says she has a sister in town.
- 13:40Speaker 6: Doesn't have any idea where she lives.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Though, how about the boyfriends Missus Radford' supposed to running
- 13:44Speaker 5: around with?
- 13:44Speaker 7: Hearing anything about.
- 13:45Speaker 6: That, she thinks she was doing a little running around.
- 13:47Speaker 6: She doesn't know who the men are though. Hearing about
- 13:49Speaker 6: Radford's condition, I checked with George's treat a couple of
- 13:51Speaker 6: minutes ago. It's pretty critical. I don't know if he's
- 13:53Speaker 6: going to make it her name.
- 13:54Speaker 8: Oh back here, hustler, come on, But he got Redford,
- 14:00Speaker 8: his neighbors next to Whitley's. Just got a call from
- 14:02Speaker 8: miss Radford. She's talking to mister Whitley on the phone
- 14:04Speaker 8: right now.
- 14:04Speaker 7: Let's go. I don't know what this is.
- 14:05Speaker 11: What I was on?
- 14:13Speaker 6: Oh yes, I was just gonna run and get you.
- 14:15Speaker 7: You had missus Radford on the phone.
- 14:16Speaker 6: I did, Yeah, she hung up just before you came in.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Wouldn't talk though. Did you tell you where she is?
- 14:21Speaker 5: No?
- 14:21Speaker 6: She sure sounded funny. I think something snatched.
- 14:23Speaker 7: She's a little crazy or what she said?
- 14:24Speaker 11: What she called?
- 14:25Speaker 6: You said she wanted to find out if her no
- 14:26Speaker 6: good husband was dead. Yet that's all I could make A.
- 14:32Speaker 5: While ed and I waited with mister Whitley in his
- 14:34Speaker 5: apartment al shamber, got to another phone in one of
- 14:36Speaker 5: the adjoining apartments, called our business office and gave them
- 14:39Speaker 5: the number of the Whitley's telephone. He asked them to
- 14:42Speaker 5: make arrangements as soon as possible to have all incoming
- 14:44Speaker 5: calls at the Whitley's trace to their origin meantime, Ed
- 14:48Speaker 5: and I were briefing Ernest Whitley as to what he
- 14:49Speaker 5: should say if and when the suspect Stella Radford called
- 14:52Speaker 5: him back. There was no phone extension in his apartment,
- 14:55Speaker 5: so the only way we'd be able to monitor the.
- 14:57Speaker 7: Conversation would be for Whitley to share the receiver with.
- 14:59Speaker 5: One one of us were waiting eleven thirty pm, eleven
- 15:03Speaker 5: forty five midnight, twelve fifteen am.
- 15:08Speaker 7: Sorry, all right, try and keep the receiver till then
- 15:11Speaker 7: so we can listen.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Sure, hope, I got it straight?
- 15:13Speaker 11: Okay, Hello, I needed Stella.
- 15:17Speaker 9: Do you find out what I told you to?
- 15:19Speaker 6: Yeah? Yeah, I call the hospital.
- 15:20Speaker 7: While he's a lot better.
- 15:21Speaker 6: It's not as bad as they thought it was. What

- 15:24Speaker 3: You're trying to kid me.
- 15:25Speaker 6: No, it's a truth. Still, it's not half bad at all.
- 15:26Speaker 6: While he's gonna be all right.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Couldn't I'm shot him four or five times?
- 15:30Speaker 5: Ell? Could he be all right?
- 15:31Speaker 6: I didn't say he was all right.
- 15:32Speaker 7: I say he was going to be all right.
- 15:33Speaker 6: Look, it's nothing serious. It's not half as bad as
- 15:35Speaker 6: they thought.
- 15:35Speaker 9: You're lying, you know you're lying.
- 15:37Speaker 6: Let's come on, snap, out of it. Well you're still

- 15:39Speaker 7: Wal He forgives you, believe me, he does.
- 15:42Speaker 6: Now, look, why don't you come home. We'll get the
- 15:43Speaker 6: whole thing straightened out. There won't be any trouble.
- 15:45Speaker 12: Why don't you trying to kid me?
- 15:47Speaker 9: It's not going to be all right.
- 15:48Speaker 6: I've seen the last you and the last of Wallie.
- 15:50Speaker 11: Still, I'm with my boyfriend.
- 15:51Speaker 6: Now we're getting out of town. Now, wait a minute, Stelle,
- 15:53Speaker 6: use your head. Huh. Don't go rushing in anything. Don't
- 15:55Speaker 6: have to tell me.
- 15:56Speaker 5: I know what I'm doing.
- 15:57Speaker 6: I don't care if that dumb husband of mine lived
- 15:59Speaker 6: or dies, but just.
- 16:00Speaker 9: Telling me better not try to follow it, Stell.
- 16:02Speaker 6: My boyfriend and ex he's got a gun and he
- 16:04Speaker 6: knows how to use it. Well, Stella, wall you listen
- 16:06Speaker 6: a minute.
- 16:07Speaker 3: The cops too, in case they're going to follow us.
- 16:09Speaker 9: They try and stop it, and they're going.
- 16:10Speaker 6: To have a fight in there. Look, you keep talking.
- 16:12Speaker 6: When you listen for just a minute, where are you now,
- 16:14Speaker 6: let me come down and talk to you.
- 16:15Speaker 9: Not a chance, just be a waste of time.
- 16:17Speaker 5: I'll leave it with my boyfriend in half an hour.
- 16:19Speaker 7: You can tell I'll be done.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Wait a minute, Stelle. He gave me a message for you, Annie.
- 16:23Speaker 6: He left something with me. He wants you to have it.
- 16:25Speaker 6: What's wallet?
- 16:27Speaker 7: He gave it to me just before he left for
- 16:28Speaker 7: the hospital.
- 16:28Speaker 6: He got ninety four dollars in it, says he doesn't
- 16:31Speaker 6: care what you think of He wants you to have
- 16:32Speaker 6: the money.
- 16:33Speaker 7: Ninety four dollars.
- 16:34Speaker 6: Yeah, he didn't have that much money with hi.
- 16:36Speaker 9: Where'd he get it?
- 16:37Speaker 6: Well, I don't know anything about that, but it's right
- 16:39Speaker 6: here in his wallet, just the way he gave it
- 16:40Speaker 6: to me. He wants you to have it, that's.
- 16:41Speaker 3: All I know.
- 16:42Speaker 9: I don't get it.
- 16:43Speaker 4: He didn't have that much money.
- 16:44Speaker 6: Well, what do you want me to do? Take it
- 16:45Speaker 6: back to him? Tell me you didn't want it. Look,
- 16:47Speaker 6: give the guy a break, Hostelle. It's the only way
- 16:49Speaker 6: he's got to show you how he feels about you, Stell.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Isn't that right?
- 16:56Speaker 9: Well?
- 16:56Speaker 7: How about it, Stelle?
- 16:58Speaker 6: You got the money with you? I told you, yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 6: pick it up anytime you want. No, you bring it
- 17:02Speaker 6: down here.
- 17:03Speaker 4: I'll put your camp there, buy your.
- 17:05Speaker 12: Drinks if you meet my boyfriend.
- 17:06Speaker 6: Yeah, Stelle, Stelle, Yeah, it's about twelve thirty out.
- 17:14Speaker 11: Be down here in half an hour.
- 17:15Speaker 6: Huh, I'm in a bar right on the corner.
- 17:17Speaker 10: You can't miss it.
- 17:17Speaker 6: Well, what corner ninth and Avalon.
- 17:23Speaker 5: As soon as the suspect Stella Radford hung up, we
- 17:25Speaker 5: went to the apartment Cottie's next door, where al Shambra
- 17:28Speaker 5: was on the phone in constant communication with our business office.
- 17:31Speaker 7: He told us that somehow there's been a slip up.
- 17:34Speaker 5: They were unable to trace the call to its point
- 17:36Speaker 5: of origin twelve thirty six am. According to plan, Ernest
- 17:40Speaker 5: quickly left his apartment, called a taxi and headed downtown
- 17:43Speaker 5: to keep his appointment with a.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Suspect Stella Radford.
- 17:46Speaker 5: Ed Jacobs and Lieutenant Tony Ruis from Homicide followed him.
- 17:49Speaker 5: Al shamber and I stood by at the apartment more
- 17:52Speaker 5: waiting one am one point thirty two am.
- 17:56Speaker 6: I think they'd call us anyway. I wonder what the
- 17:57Speaker 6: hitch is. It's kind of hard to figure out, steer.
- 18:00Speaker 7: They ran into some kind of.
- 18:01Speaker 6: Trouble, made missus Radford. She really warmed up for the
- 18:03Speaker 6: idea when the money was mentioned.
- 18:04Speaker 7: Apparently, yeah, I was listening in.
- 18:06Speaker 5: When Whitley gave her the story, she seemed to go
- 18:08Speaker 5: for it's kind of hard to tell the way this
- 18:10Speaker 5: whole thing shaped up.
- 18:11Speaker 6: She might be them. Now give a look.
- 18:18Speaker 7: Than Joe, Oh yeah, what happened? How to go?
- 18:20Speaker 8: We covered the bottle of clothing. Priz neighborhood gave a
- 18:23Speaker 8: funny of time. Yeah, no, lock, she didn't show.
- 18:36Speaker 4: You are listening to Drag Meet Authentic stories of your
- 18:39Speaker 4: police force and action.
- 18:48Speaker 5: Friday, January twenty first to twenty eight am, with the
- 18:51Speaker 5: failure of the suspect, Stella Radford to keep the date
- 18:54Speaker 5: with her next door neighbor Ernest Quidley at the Avalon
- 18:56Speaker 5: Boulevard bar, we reached a temporary stalemate. Despite the fact
- 19:00Speaker 5: that checks were made at all restaurants, bars, and other
- 19:02Speaker 5: business places in the vicinity.
- 19:04Speaker 7: Of Ninth and Avalon opened that time of night, there
- 19:06Speaker 7: was no report or trace of the suspect.
- 19:09Speaker 5: While the search continued, we stood by at the Whitley
- 19:11Speaker 5: apartment in the hope that missus Radford might call back.
- 19:15Speaker 5: A check of our records and Identification Bureau failed to
- 19:17Speaker 5: turn up any record on either the.
- 19:19Speaker 7: Victim or the suspect.
- 19:20Speaker 5: His wife ed called Georgia Street Receiving Hospital again, but
- 19:23Speaker 5: there was no change.
- 19:25Speaker 7: Wallace Radford's condition was still critical.
- 19:28Speaker 5: At two thirty five a m. Stella Radford telephoned again.
- 19:31Speaker 5: While we listened in. She told Whitley that she'd had
- 19:33Speaker 5: no intention of keeping that appointment with him at the
- 19:35Speaker 5: Avalon Boulevard bar. She told him that she knew he
- 19:38Speaker 5: was working with the police, that she saw officers follow
- 19:41Speaker 5: Whitley to the bar.
- 19:42Speaker 7: Where they were supposed to have met.
- 19:43Speaker 5: She again warned him of the consequences in the event
- 19:46Speaker 5: anybody tried to apprehend her. After she hung up, we
- 19:49Speaker 5: checked with the business office and they told us that
- 19:51Speaker 5: the calls had been coming from a telephone prefix which
- 19:53Speaker 5: was impossible to trace. Ten minutes later, Whitley got another
- 19:57Speaker 5: call from the Radford woman. The conversation went on for
- 19:59Speaker 5: the better part of twenty minutes. She didn't seem to
- 20:02Speaker 5: make much rhyme or reason. Her only concern was the
- 20:04Speaker 5: condition of her husband, whether or.
- 20:06Speaker 7: Not he was dead. She hung up abruptly, but fifteen
- 20:09Speaker 7: minutes later she called Whitley again.
- 20:11Speaker 6: Look, Stelle, I told you there isn't gonna be any
- 20:13Speaker 6: trouble now. Why don't you go and see Wally lying
- 20:15Speaker 6: down there in the hospital. He wants to see you.
- 20:17Speaker 6: How about it, Hostell? If he did or not, that's
- 20:19Speaker 6: all I want to know.
- 20:20Speaker 7: My boyfriend and I are leave the first thing in
- 20:21Speaker 7: the morning.
- 20:22Speaker 9: I want to find out before.
- 20:23Speaker 6: Why don't you at least give me a chance to
- 20:24Speaker 6: talk to you? Estelle? Huh, we've been good friends.
- 20:26Speaker 7: You know.
- 20:26Speaker 6: I wouldn't do anything to hurt you.
- 20:27Speaker 7: You are Wally.
- 20:28Speaker 6: Now let me talk to you. Hunh there's nothing to
- 20:30Speaker 6: talk about.
- 20:30Speaker 1: They got any say to tell me now.
- 20:32Speaker 5: All I want to do is out.
- 20:33Speaker 6: I want to told you he's hurt, but he's going
- 20:35Speaker 6: to be all right. It's not serious, Stelle.
- 20:39Speaker 9: Why don't you shove blind to me?
- 20:41Speaker 6: But I'm not lying, Stelle. I wouldn't lie about something
- 20:44Speaker 6: like that. What's the matter with you anyway? You've been drinking?
- 20:46Speaker 9: What's it your business?
- 20:47Speaker 6: You're not getting me, Ornie. You're trying to help the cup?
- 20:49Speaker 12: Don't you think I know that?
- 20:50Speaker 9: What kind of a pool you think I am?
- 20:52Speaker 6: I'm trying to help, Stelle, that's all you're You're kind of.
- 20:54Speaker 9: Help, not me, though, you're kind of help the coup.
- 20:57Speaker 9: I know they're weakened, but we.
- 20:58Speaker 7: Made that day to meet at the bar.
- 20:59Speaker 5: You total all about it.
- 21:00Speaker 6: No, No, you got it wrong, honey. I'm trying to
- 21:04Speaker 6: help both it and you and Wally. I'm trying to
- 21:06Speaker 6: help the best way I know how. Why don't you
- 21:08Speaker 6: come home? I told you straighten the whole thing out.
- 21:11Speaker 6: There won't be any trouble.
- 21:11Speaker 9: Don't have me that I said.
- 21:13Speaker 6: We're leaving count me and my boyfriend.
- 21:15Speaker 9: What about that money?
- 21:16Speaker 4: Nine?
- 21:18Speaker 6: Yeah, that's ready, diners. Now, how can I get it
- 21:20Speaker 6: to you? If you don't trust me, get.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Away from the cops.
- 21:23Speaker 6: Maybe I could use the money, but I'm not giving myself. Look,
- 21:26Speaker 6: you're wrong about the cops. Still believe me?
- 21:28Speaker 9: You are?
- 21:28Speaker 6: Now, why won't you let me meet you someplace? Any
- 21:30Speaker 6: place you want? Just let me talk to you.
- 21:32Speaker 5: I have to tell you that not to talk about.
- 21:34Speaker 6: All I want to do is about Wally.
- 21:36Speaker 9: Is he did yet?
- 21:36Speaker 6: But I told you he's not dead. He's going to
- 21:38Speaker 6: be all right. Why can't you believe me? It's not
- 21:41Speaker 6: what they thought.
- 21:42Speaker 7: Whial, He'll be okay in the next room.
- 21:46Speaker 6: But what Forest Dell? Why not come on snap out
- 21:49Speaker 6: of it.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Huh No, it's the.
- 21:50Speaker 6: Truth, So help me.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that's my It just happened to strike me.
- 21:55Speaker 7: You hear that street card.
- 21:56Speaker 5: It just went by a minute ago.
- 21:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I did.
- 21:58Speaker 6: Why did you know this?
- 21:59Speaker 5: A little before that we were listening on the phone.
- 22:01Speaker 5: Sounded like the same thing coming over the line, didn't it.
- 22:03Speaker 8: Yeah, come to think of it, it did. Matter of fact,
- 22:05Speaker 8: I heard it a couple of times coming over the phone.
- 22:06Speaker 8: Was pretty regular.
- 22:07Speaker 7: Now, that's what I mean.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Street cars have been passing by here regularly too. Not
- 22:11Speaker 5: much of a time laps either, not much more in
- 22:13Speaker 5: a minute. Well, I mean between the time when we
- 22:16Speaker 5: hear it over the phone and the time the street
- 22:17Speaker 5: car actually passes this place.
- 22:18Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 22:19Speaker 5: Well, if we've got the right angle, there's only one
- 22:21Speaker 5: way to figure here. She's phoning from somewhere in the neighborhood,
- 22:24Speaker 5: and she's fairly close with and she saying, where do
- 22:26Speaker 5: we start looking? Car tracks only run two ways. Three
- 22:32Speaker 5: thirty am ed and I went back into the next
- 22:35Speaker 5: room and continue to monitor the conversation between Whitley and
- 22:37Speaker 5: missus Radford. Whitley seemed to know how to keep the
- 22:40Speaker 5: suspect talking, even though the purpose of her conversation seemed
- 22:43Speaker 5: to make little or no sense. At three forty two am,
- 22:46Speaker 5: while we listened in on the other end of the line.
- 22:49Speaker 5: We again heard the sound of a.
- 22:50Speaker 6: Street car approach and pass Ed checked his watch.
- 22:54Speaker 5: Approximately one minute thirty eight seconds later, we heard a
- 22:56Speaker 5: streetcar pass by in front of the apartment court. Before
- 23:00Speaker 5: Ed and I left, we gotted down a note for
- 23:02Speaker 5: Whickley asking him to keep missus Radford on the line just.
- 23:04Speaker 7: As long as possible. We got in the car and
- 23:07Speaker 7: drove north along the car tracks at about the normal
- 23:09Speaker 7: speed of a street car.
- 23:11Speaker 5: One minute and thirty eight seconds of driving brought us
- 23:13Speaker 5: a distance of little more than eight blocks. Was on
- 23:16Speaker 5: the fringe of a park area. There were only three
- 23:18Speaker 5: residential buildings in the immediate vicinity. There were no lights
- 23:21Speaker 5: showing in any of them. We checked the location for
- 23:24Speaker 5: public telephones, but we found none. Four or fifteen am,
- 23:27Speaker 5: we turned around, drove back to the apartment court.
- 23:29Speaker 7: And, using the same timing procedure one minute thirty.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Eight seconds of twenty five miles an hour, we drove
- 23:35Speaker 5: along the car line in a southerly direction.
- 23:37Speaker 8: Shot how much of a choice Barser closed most of
- 23:40Speaker 8: the restaurants. No light's running on this block?
- 23:42Speaker 7: Few up ahead, then the next block.
- 23:43Speaker 3: ED, gotta come pretty soon, doesn't it?
- 23:47Speaker 7: Yeah? It's a minute right now. I can't see how
- 23:49Speaker 7: we be wronging it?
- 23:50Speaker 3: Can you too much to rite off? Is just a coincidence?
- 23:54Speaker 7: A minute? Fifteen seconds? Minute twenty better? Slow down? Yeah?
- 24:02Speaker 3: What do you think?
- 24:03Speaker 7: There's a service station across the street and it's.
- 24:05Speaker 6: Closed up with a lot of them have outside payphers.
- 24:07Speaker 7: Don't think you see any No?
- 24:09Speaker 3: None on this side? Say I'll pull up in there.
- 24:12Speaker 7: Huh Yeah, there's the phone los in the back there.
- 24:16Speaker 7: There's no light though, looks.
- 24:18Speaker 3: Like somebody in it. Looks like a woman yet is
- 24:22Speaker 3: come in? All right, hold it up, lady, he's running
- 24:26Speaker 3: for Joe.
- 24:27Speaker 7: All right, come on, come on, hold it up, lady.
- 24:28Speaker 6: Police office, they go, they go, me, what do you
- 24:31Speaker 6: think you're doing?
- 24:31Speaker 7: Poice officer's lady? Here's our identification? Like talk to you?
- 24:34Speaker 6: You leave me alone. Just leave me alone, that's all.
- 24:36Speaker 12: I don't have to talk to you.
- 24:37Speaker 3: And name still a Radford? Isn't it?
- 24:38Speaker 7: No?
- 24:39Speaker 3: No, it isn't that's your identification?
- 24:40Speaker 6: Who sent you here?
- 24:41Speaker 11: Who was it?
- 24:42Speaker 7: Are you still a Radford?
- 24:43Speaker 6: Who couldn't have found out?
- 24:44Speaker 12: How'd you know I was here?
- 24:44Speaker 5: It was on hee?
- 24:45Speaker 8: Wasn't it him?
- 24:45Speaker 2: And his friends?
- 24:46Speaker 6: He told you. No, man, I don't see how you
- 24:49Speaker 6: found me. Somebody had to tell you. You never could
- 24:51Speaker 6: have found me. I don't see how I made any mistake.
- 24:54Speaker 7: Yeah, that's right. Let's go, lady.
- 25:08Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 25:11Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 25:13Speaker 4: On April sixteenth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department

- 27:46Speaker 1: Welcome back. That cafeteria at the beginning is a menace
- 27:52Speaker 1: to public safety. Given how many police officers it was
- 27:56Speaker 1: a flecting a nice clue and bit of detective of
- 28:00Speaker 1: work that could have worked in a fictional story. For
- 28:04Speaker 1: the first time listening to this, I did question the
- 28:09Speaker 1: method because it seemed to me that on a very
- 28:14Speaker 1: basic level, you could have had one of the two
- 28:18Speaker 1: detectives outside monitoring street car traffic in the area, so
- 28:25Speaker 1: when the other one heard the streak car going by
- 28:29Speaker 1: after they'd heard it on the phone, the detective was
- 28:34Speaker 1: outside would know which exact direction to go, rather than
- 28:38Speaker 1: having to backtrack back and forth, which required keeping the
- 28:43Speaker 1: suspect on the line longer. Now, it could be a
- 28:47Speaker 1: change that was done for dramatic effect because it's a
- 28:54Speaker 1: little bit more tense, or it could be that the
- 28:58Speaker 1: real life officers didn't think think of that. To be fair,
- 29:01Speaker 1: this is at least my third time hearing this particular episode,
- 29:05Speaker 1: and I think this is the first time it's occurred
- 29:08Speaker 1: to me, and I was not under the influence of
- 29:12Speaker 1: the cafeterious food. Episode also has another important point at
- 29:17Speaker 1: the end where the husband, mister Radford, decides not to
- 29:22Speaker 1: press charges. Nevertheless, charges are brought, and this brings home
- 29:27Speaker 1: an important point where sometimes we can get misled by
- 29:32Speaker 1: fictional crime programs and get the idea that a victim's
- 29:38Speaker 1: decision to press charges or not determinative of whether a
- 29:44Speaker 1: prosecution will occur. That's just not the case. It is
- 29:48Speaker 1: usually the decision of the state as to whether they're
- 29:53Speaker 1: going to prosecute, although that does vary a little bit
- 29:56Speaker 1: by jurisdiction in some cases. Just as a practical matter
- 30:02Speaker 1: without a complaining witness, there are various crimes that are
- 30:07Speaker 1: just very hard to prove, and this is true certainly
- 30:11Speaker 1: of many domestic violence prosecutions. There are also some minor
- 30:15Speaker 1: crimes where a prosecutor might give weight to a victim's
- 30:20Speaker 1: request that prosecution not be pursued. Prosecutorial discretion can indicate
- 30:27Speaker 1: that it's just not wise to bring a prosecution involved
- 30:33Speaker 1: the correctional system in a minor situation that the parties
- 30:40Speaker 1: have come to an understanding one. But then there are
- 30:44Speaker 1: cases that are going to be prosecuted regardless of what
- 30:49Speaker 1: the victim said. It's wonderful the husband's choosing to be
- 30:53Speaker 1: a sport and not prosecute, but honestly, the police don't
- 30:57Speaker 1: need him to give evidence. They've got the gun she fired,
- 31:02Speaker 1: and likely they were able to run a paraffine test
- 31:06Speaker 1: and he ended up in the hospital in critical condition.
- 31:09Speaker 1: This is a serious crime. It's not something that you
- 31:13Speaker 1: can allow in society without consequence, so it's totally they
- 31:19Speaker 1: believable that they would go ahead and prosecute despite the husband.
- 31:24Speaker 7: Not wanting it.

- 32:36Speaker 12: Believe me, a young man's fancy didn't have to wait
- 32:39Speaker 12: for spring to turn the thoughts of her.
- 32:40Speaker 9: Now what does that mean?
- 32:42Speaker 11: Oh?
- 32:42Speaker 7: Ah?
- 32:43Speaker 11: Even I had serious ideas about that gallop one time.
- 32:46Speaker 12: Oh yeah, right after college. Isn't every kid of that
- 32:48Speaker 12: agent trigued by the idea of marrying into a fortune.
- 32:51Speaker 12: And very beautiful at least she was when I know her.
- 32:54Speaker 9: Still is Johnny.
- 32:55Speaker 11: So she's married to somebody by the name of Haskell.
- 32:58Speaker 9: Huh, Gorton Haskell. They live on Birchbrook Road down in Bronxville,
- 33:03Speaker 9: New York.
- 33:04Speaker 12: Funny, what well when I knew her, that blonde charmer
- 33:08Speaker 12: didn't have eyes for anybody but Paul Snowden. Who's Paul
- 33:11Speaker 12: Snowdon child? What sweetheight that sort of thing. Poor boy
- 33:15Speaker 12: making good on his own, you.
- 33:16Speaker 6: Know a little bit.
- 33:17Speaker 9: Ah, He is too proud to marry her because of
- 33:19Speaker 9: her money.
- 33:20Speaker 12: But she swore that she'd never marry anybody else, that
- 33:22Speaker 12: he was her one true love.
- 33:24Speaker 11: But I uh, I guess she changed her mind. What
- 33:27Speaker 11: does she want to see me about al?
- 33:29Speaker 9: She didn't say. She did make it clear, however, that
- 33:32Speaker 9: it has to do with some of the family insurance.
- 33:34Speaker 11: Well that's as good an excuse as any.
- 33:36Speaker 9: Then, do you want to run on down.
- 33:38Speaker 12: There for a longing look at the gorgeous Ginny van Durham.
- 33:41Speaker 12: But it'll cost you money out listen, Johnny.
- 33:44Speaker 9: With the premiums we get for all the insurance she carries, life, house, property,
- 33:49Speaker 9: and so on.
- 33:50Speaker 11: The sky is a limit, brother, Have you stucked your
- 33:52Speaker 11: neck out?
