Transcript
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: Hey everybody, this is Frankie.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: And this is Johnny.
- 0:13SPEAKER_01: Uh, first of all, before anything, please subscribe and follow us so you can get updates on on whatever we're dropping that week, and so you could share.
- 0:23SPEAKER_01: Like the the goal here is what's the goal, Johnny?
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: To reach as many people as we can.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Reach as many people, help as many families, and and change some of the dynamics and and help better help understand one another as as parents understand our teens and as teens to feel safer to talk to to our parents.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: So today we're going to do things a a little bit a little bit differently.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, the research shows that one of the I I look at the research of some of the questions that that teens uh are searching for.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: They're they're they're they're asking whether it's AI or Googling or looking for answers of how to talk to their parents without us getting mad.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Uh so Johnny, uh question is like what goes through your mind?
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, what is it that you feel like when you want to say something to me and you're trying to figure out whether to say it or not?
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: Like, what what's that like?
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, I have to think about it a lot.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Um, about the questions that I'm gonna ask you.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Uh sometimes I might get nervous about his reaction and stuff.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: But uh I've learned this that if you talk to your parents or talk to anybody and start with the words I feel or it seems like, or I wanted to ask you this because I feel like um it's can you slow slow it down and repeat that again?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: The words uh I want to ask you because I feel like it makes the other person um like get less defensive because of the fact that that's how that per the person that's asking you that question truly feels.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So it I guess relieves the conversation a little bit, and it's easier to ask a question, and it's it becomes more comfortable.
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: That that that's really good, and and actually like that that's really good.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I'm surprised and and and like like when we have these real conversations before before I I I I I piggyback off of that.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: Um like I'm here super surprised and learning about my son in real time.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Like I really encourage every parent, every son, daughter out there, like have these conversations because like we get so caught up in the oh, so how was school?
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: Even if it wasn't good, it's like an automatic response.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: We we're not having real dialogue.
- 3:05SPEAKER_01: Um, like have these conversations, like you're not only am I seeing our relationship get tighter and closer, it's just really learning about what he's going through.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Like, I even if there's nobody watching, like I'm I'm getting so much out of it, which I know from comments on on Messenger and DMs that that you are as well.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: So now as you're saying that, son, oh what I was getting at, those things of it, I feel like not just young people, adults, like let's have let's learn this in not only our relationship with our children, in our friendships, in our personal relationships, instead of you always, you never I feel like taking like my feelings aren't being considered, or I feel like when you do this, you're not thinking about me.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: It's really a game changer, and like that that's ultimately what everything's for, us building closer connections.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: So as you're saying that, Sun, though, you said sometimes you're you you're playing in your head of should I say this or not.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: You mentioned the how to say it that it gets across, yet what is that battle?
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Because sometimes I I even I I'll look at you and I can see that there's like some maybe tension going on, like, and then I'll ask you, and and and then I don't know.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I've you know, I get in my own thing, and and sometimes I I I I forget uh in that moment, what what is what are you feeling inside like inside your body?
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Because at first, whether we realize it or not, and I want you to sit with that for a second, like there's a tension that when we're gonna have a hard conversation, whether with whoever it is, there's like oof, I don't want to do this, should I, should I not?
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: What is that like for you while you're going through it?
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And then how do you feel after you do it, regardless of if it goes the way you hoped?
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: You're talking about like having a comfortable conversation, kind of when there's something that you need to ask, you know, one of your parents, and you're having that like, oh, I don't know.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: Uh I I I went out last night, and maybe tomorrow, or I want to go to my girlfriend's house, or it's late, or maybe I whatever that that thing is, or I want to stay up later, you know.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: What is that that tension that you're feeling?
- 5:54SPEAKER_01: Like you feel tension?
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I don't want to um it's not really I mean, I guess you could say it's tension, but it's more like just feeling nervous to ask the question because you don't want to get, I guess, denied or have or the have them say no.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Um so usually I mean I would just I guess uh help help you guys out more, like help my parents out more before that day before asking them that question.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: And then and then uh yeah, asking, I mean, they get nervous asking the question, but I would still ask it because the the only question that's uh what's that saying?
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: The the only wrong question is the one you never ask.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: So so you're admitting here live that Larny that you're kind of manipulating a little bit the situation beforehand.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: I guess.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: By the way, I catch that when you do that.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Uh and and let let's change the narrative, like, because it's fear.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: It's fear.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: And as parents, this is one thing, and and I don't know if if you you you're gonna realize what I'm about to say at this point, but I know in the long run, because the the research shows us and the data shows this, and when you sit with it, I think it actually, I think if you sit with it, if it doesn't come to you now, it'll come to you later.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Um, that as parents, we don't like to say no.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: And I know our our generation of of at my age, like our parents always oftentimes it was like, yes, no, no, no, no.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: No, no reasons why, just it was plain out no.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: And I I think we many of us like that hurt us.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: We never knew why.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: We never so we've overcompensated in wanting to give you guys almost like everything and always saying yes.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, then there's there there's no structure, and you guys need structure.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: So sometimes I want to ask you this.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Have you ever, when you've asked something and you've heard a no from from your mom or your dad, and that later on you've been like that later on it's changed your position or your feelings about what that no, you know what?
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: Or you know what, I'm actually glad that maybe they said no, and maybe you can use an example.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, there has been times where of course they're looking for they're looking out for us, like the best of us.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: So sometimes they saw no because I mean they have maybe they maybe it's too late, or maybe we have something the next day and we're not gonna be well rested, or something like that.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Um but sometimes there's also those times that they just say no and it's for like no reason.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Uh or maybe like Yeah, honestly, it's like they say no, but then I'm sitting at home and doing nothing, and then I'm like, oh, I wish I could be there.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: And what does it feel like when when as parents we say no and don't give an explanation for the no?
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: Then it keeps the the kids thinking, or like me or it'll keep me thinking, and I'll just be like, I mean, I I'll ask why, and they still will be like, there's no there's there's no reason, it's just it's just no.
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: Like no is no, and then it's like but they can't even give me an explanation, so why like why can't I?
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: So, parents, this is really important, like it's super, super important.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Like everything is not about getting exactly what we want.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, we think it is.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: That's that's what we think it is.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: But really, in in every relationship, what we want is to be understood.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: What we want is understanding one another, understanding reasoning, because even like let's say as parents, we tell our kids, you know, no, and it's because I said so.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Now they go on and there's no dialogue, there's nothing to think about, they're just, you know, my parents are this, you know, you know, whatever expletive uh that they think in their head.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: And but there's no reasoning.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: So how can we help their critical thinking if we're not giving them something to think about?
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: It's just no.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: We're now if we teach them the reasoning, like that no, and you correct me, ultimately makes you feel if there's an explanation given, how does it make you feel when it's like, hey, listen, I'm I'm saying no, son, and this is why I'm concerned about this, this, this, this, and that.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: How do you feel when you sit with that explanation later on in your own time?
- 11:07SPEAKER_01: Because I don't know, we never had this conversation.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you feel more like they have a good reason, or uh maybe it's not a good reason.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: Maybe you don't think it's a good reason, but they definitely know more than us, so they're just looking out for the best of us.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, I mean when they give us a reason, I feel like it's more like okay, at least like they have a reason and like they're just trying to like look out for me, or just like they're just caring for me.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: So as opposed to when you get no reason.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: It's like just me thinking, like, oh, why can't I like So would it be fair to say that you feel more loved when when you're given a a reason?
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, more cared for and yeah, loved.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Like that's really I know for a lot of people that's like uh oh my god, I I I didn't think about that.
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: And and and again, like we're learning here, you know, with you in certain things.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Um thank you for that.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Uh so now we're gonna go into you know, we're shifting a little bit too now, like as we've been going so far throughout this these episodes of you know, generally I'm asking all the questions, and now I'm gonna flip it around a a little bit.
- 12:26SPEAKER_01: Um don't get nervous.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: So, like our kids also, like what we want you know, our kids uh generally speaking, the average time that we have with our children that we spend with them is 19 years.
- 12:47SPEAKER_01: Bring out the tissues.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: 18 of those years are the first 18 years of their life.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: After that, generally speaking, one year.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: One more year.
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: And do you want to change the dynamics of that one more year?
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Is about having these open conversations where they feel understood, feelings validated, heard, not always trying to fix everything, but being there in the trenches with our kids and feeling like they're part of something, not just, well, I'm the adult, you're the kid.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: So as I say that, what are some questions, um, Johnny, that that you've wanted to ask me that or wondered about me that um you've never asked, and I I want you to share like honestly so I can answer and you know, not gonna get mad or uh do you I have a good question.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Um, do you when you were like younger, do you regret uh I guess going out as much and not spending as much family time with your family?
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: In my case, no.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: And for me, um it was it was an escape.
- 14:36SPEAKER_01: Going out for me was running from Running from a place where I at times didn't feel my feelings validated.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Um didn't feel necessarily.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: This is a hard conversation for me to answer on on camera because I I'll I I can elaborate on something.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: My growing up, my my my family, my parents are still alive and they did the best that they could.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: And I want to respect um honor them and respect them on on camera.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: But I was running and uh I haven't I'll share my testimony at at some point.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: A lot of you already know it for those that are new and and people that have started following me over the you know the last few months here or what have you haven't really shared much about my journey.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: Um but I will, I will, uh absolutely.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: Um my model's real raw and vulnerable and and I'm not gonna shy away from it.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: But uh at the same time, I'm gonna I have to honor some of the people here, but in my case, no.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: And because of that pain.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: I've made numerous mistakes uh as a father.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I'm aware of the mistakes I've made.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: And like I share with you, I want to be I'm all in on trying to be the best dad I can be.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: With all my imperfections, with all my f my faults.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: And for you to be a better father, husband, friend than me.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: Like that's all I want.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: So did that answer Yeah.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: Woo!
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Alright, so um wow.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: What can we do as parents?
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: You know, there's a lot of kids that that are afraid to um to talk to their parents, and I think we we we kind of like we we've shared some of that stuff.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: Uh what can we as parents do to open up that opportunity for for you?
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: God, I didn't expect to get so emotional.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Uh for for for young people like to actually have those conversations with with their parents, to have that that that safety net of of like, listen, um I I want to connect with you.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: What can what can we do?
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Uh like we talked about earlier, you could give, I mean, when the answer is no, give reasons why.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Um maybe instead of them going out with friends, going out with like just their family and having a good time with their parents.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: Parents playing some activities with your kids, and I mean get out of the house and do something, uh just go to the park if you want.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's a lot of stuff to do.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: Um whether it's like watching a movie, uh going to the park, mini golfing, bowling, I mean just like some fun activities that you could do every so often with your kids, and that make m makes the kids feel more like I guess kids want to always have fun.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Uh most kids, so it makes them feel like they're not just saying no because it's boring, I mean because it's no, but it's giving them a reason why, and instead of like shutting that whole day off for them, you do something fun and still make them happy.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's you love mini golf, man.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: I I forgot like we we've had some great mini golf ex uh experiences.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: You know, uh it just for me, like I I spot patterns and I keep finding the common pattern.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: The common pattern is human connection.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Like last week we spoke a lot about human connection, and here we go again about connecting.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: Like we were born to connect, and and there's never going to be an experience that is going to digitally online through a screen that's ever going to replace what it is about people who care about each other sharing memories, moments.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: And for those watching, like, okay, you know, times are tight, things are expensive, whatever it may be, you can go to a park.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: You can grab a ball, you know, play frisbee.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: I mean, I'm not a frisbee guy, I don't know if you've ever played frisbee, but but whatever that thing is, you know, go for a walk, having that conversation, those dialogues.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: And you said something right now that, you know, you just, I'm like, oh man, I I I gotta own that.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: Like, uh oftentimes uh I uh it's like you know, hey man, like we haven't spent time together, you know.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: You know, you're and again, you have a really packed schedule, but we haven't had like us time.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: And honestly, like I'm gonna own it, you know.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: I I'm all about taking personal responsibility and accountability.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: I gotta hold myself accountable.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Like, like if you just said something that I just learned something from you because you said, you know, planning things together.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Here, when I say we don't spend enough time together, I'm putting the onus almost like on you.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: When I'm the growing up, I'm the adult, I'm the parent.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: That's on me to curate that that time, create those moments for us to bond, for us to uh connect.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: And instead of putting it on, on um making it your responsibility uh to actually you know do so.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: So uh parents, we have to be very like we need to do better at really at connecting, at like seeing them not just as as our kids, as they're there, and even like when we're at home, like okay, you know what?
- 21:39SPEAKER_01: We're we're staying home.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: Well, oftentimes what what I see is everybody is home, but kids are in one room, the other kids in the other room, uh, you know, dad's in the computer, you know, mom scrolling.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: And and again, you know, I'm I'm giving examples, and even when we're together, like put the We have to put the damn phone the hell away, put it out out of eyesight, because even if you have it on the table, just I know a lot of people don't know this, but subconsciously, if you're in a table and that phone is visible, you're sending subc uh you're subconscious sending signals to the other person that whatever that phone, that that phone is more important than the person in front of you.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: Like, this is something that most of us don't realize it.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: But and and the the studies and the research uh prove this.
- 22:32SPEAKER_01: So it's really, you know, being intentional, not just about our time, but intentional about the delivery of the message that that we want to curate, you know, this closeness, this this togetherness.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: And don't just take it here.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: Let's bring this into our home.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: So uh as we're wrapping up, uh, many of you have sent questions in uh that that you've had.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: Um thank you.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: We're gonna be share, we're gonna be answering.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Um we're waiting to group a certain amount of questions together and then probably have a little list and we'll go through it and and and answer them in in real time here.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Uh and then many of you have have messaged me and it's been really emotional.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: And and Johnny, I know that we've discussed some of the things and he's felt it that how you didn't realize some of the things and the impact that you were having in in in your relationships, not just as parents, but you know, as as as young people, which which is why we're we're doing this, um, you know, next week we're going somewhere harder, you know.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: Um the stuff that I talk about often, and you know, loneliness and what's going on and the need for connection and the need to to talk to someone, even with all that, some people don't talk.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: Some people don't talk to their friends, some people don't talk to their parents.
- 24:07SPEAKER_01: And there are people that someone that that we know and we love dearly, uh uh I'm not gonna mention the names, but uh was alone and it was a really um went through a really challenging time.
- 24:23SPEAKER_01: And you know, I'm not we're not gonna say I'm I'm not gonna elaborate, but but that this is something that we need to talk about and we will talk about next week, and where a lot of people are turning to is the devices, these AI devices, seeking counseling, seeking help, and I'll tell you this uh the advice that they get, um, close to 80% of it is not what the kids need to hear, and that's quite significant.
- 24:55SPEAKER_01: So I want to jump on that.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: Um, Johnny, any last words, any takeaways?
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Um I mean be uh reasonable, I guess, with your kids as a parent.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: Um give them reasons to give them reasons to your nose and have fun with them, go outside, uh just make building memories with them because that's honestly the most important thing uh at the end of the day.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: Um so yeah, build memories and have fun.
- 25:33SPEAKER_01: Fun, fun, fun.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Um it reminded me of a friend.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Uh so and what I what I'll say is you know, you can follow a common thread and you're gonna see it week after week.
- 25:47SPEAKER_01: Be vulnerable, be open, build that bond.
- 25:50SPEAKER_01: Friendships are not curated, they're curated in in-person environments, but it's in those moments of being like honest, sharing experiences, having those conversations, not things that we necessarily agree on, but feeling like our message was heard, that we were understood, that we were listened to.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: So that's that's it for today's uh uh Frankie and Johnny show.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: And and make sure you uh follow on on Frankie and Johnny podcast on Instagram and TikTok.
- 26:23SPEAKER_00: Um and as as my dad said in the beginning, uh subscribe to our YouTube channel, and we have it up on a bunch of platforms.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: So just make sure to to tap in, and and every Thursday we'll be dropping at 5 a.m.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: so okay.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: Got a little bloopers segment, if you will, or maybe not bloopers, maybe mishaps.
- 26:45SPEAKER_01: Um kind of figuring it out in real time.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: So yeah, Johnny's like, well, Dad, you said friendships, and we weren't even talking about friendships the whole conversation.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: And I I misspoke.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: I I meant when I was talking about like connection vulnerability, I meant like relationships in general.
- 27:02SPEAKER_01: It doesn't matter whether it's friends, whether it's uh partners, whether it's uh you know, with our kids, like you know, the the power of just having real heartfelt emotional conversations and trying to understand each other.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: And the other one, which this was really good, this this this is actually really important because you know, Johnny's like, Dad, like you said honor, and then that you were gonna honor on camera, and what does that mean?
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: That you're gonna dishonor them off camera, because like people are gonna think you're gonna dishonor them, and and this is important because most teens think this way, as do many adults.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: Like, the opposite of one isn't the other.
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Like, you can honor someone and still not wish things were different, uh, wish uh not, you know, especially when things are are are aren't as black and white, there's some grade, things are complicated.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: So in this case, like you know, when I said mention honor, it's it's respect uh from a place of of love.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Just uh, you know, I wish things were different.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: So, like we said, like this is real time.
