- 1:15sports sponsor those, those come up here at about 10 minutes or
- 1:19so before 2 and we'll turn things over to the drive at that
- 1:21point with Heather and Lucas. Trent Condon, good to see you.
- 1:25Trust you had a good weekend. Did.
- 1:27Yeah. Mother's Day weekend, of course,
- 1:29took a lot of the limelight and no softball this weekend.
- 1:34So has Mother's Day. Yeah, scheduled, scheduled
- 1:38weekend off this one. And nice.
- 1:40I don't know. There was no pressure being
- 1:41applied at home, but I thought that made a lot of sense.
- 1:44No. Why not?
- 1:45Let's. Take this weekend off and we'll
- 1:47get ready for the big West Des Moines Invitational coming up
- 1:50this weekend. Don't come much bigger than
- 1:51that. Buckle up.
- 1:52Yes, buckle up. It's coming.
- 1:55Good. Stuff that meant a lot of hoops.
- 1:57And I forgot to show you video Saturday night.
- 2:01So Ella was off at a sleepover with one of her friends.
- 2:05So it was just me, the wife and the boy, and Jackie's watching
- 2:09the Timberwolves with me down the stretch.
- 2:11We're playing all the games. He just wanted to play them all.
- 2:13So we're playing UMO and we're playing board games and we're
- 2:16doing it all, and Dad's keeping an eye on the TV.
- 2:18And then as we're wrapping up, he gets locked into the
- 2:21basketball and all of a sudden he just starts giggling.
- 2:24Really. Giggling watching the game.
- 2:25He loves numbers. He's, he's, he's like his dad,
- 2:28right? He likes those numbers.
- 2:30All right. They're winning by 5.
- 2:31He's he's getting that all figured out.
- 2:34And he just starts giggling. And I'm Jackie.
- 2:36What are you giggling about, guys?
- 2:39Name is Jimmy Butler. Oh.
- 2:41My. The life of a 5 year old
- 2:43watching basketball so he could not stop giggling for the last
- 2:47three minutes and I had a smile ear to ear as they put it away.
- 2:50So yeah, there's a good night for the kind of boys.
- 2:52Did they cover? I don't think they did.
- 2:54I don't think they. I think that last, that meaning
- 2:56you're right at the end, provided them with a back door.
- 3:00Yeah, that's one of those bad beats.
- 3:01Or you'll take it and run with it if you're on the other.
- 3:04Side The Timberwolves can't lose this series.
- 3:06They're not going to lose this series.
- 3:07I can't see anyway. I didn't think they played very
- 3:09well. The.
- 3:10Other night didn't. Right.
- 3:11And still managed to win. And I'm not sure Jimmy Butler
- 3:14can play much better than he did the other night.
- 3:16He was. Really good.
- 3:17Yeah, 33, seven and seven. Yeah, they'll take that from
- 3:20him. I.
- 3:21Mean if that's what you're getting from him and he still
- 3:22can't overcome. Not only that, Kamingo was
- 3:25outstanding for his. Long stretches.
- 3:28He was really good, but Draymond was not good.
- 3:32He he was bad for his and not just OK he didn't give.
- 3:36There's times he just doesn't give you anything offensively
- 3:39and what he does, racing the ball up the floor from time to
- 3:42time, well normally that's just to flip it to Steph for a 30
- 3:44foot, right. Well, it's not.
- 3:46There this week. That guy's not there anymore.
- 3:48Just watching that. Like you said, the Timberwolves
- 3:50didn't play well. They have to win the series.
- 3:53Yes, they will. They have to be marching on to
- 3:56take on, I think OK C At this point, I think Denver looks like
- 4:00a tired basketball team. The other one from Saturday.
- 4:04Excited to flip on MSG. See the environment and the the
- 4:09crowd just never can get it they they.
- 4:11Had other plans, did they not? Yeah.
- 4:13Yeah, The the Celtics took him out of that one very early in
- 4:15the basketball game. Now they're tonight, correct.
- 4:17Both of them resumed tonight. Yes, I know the late game is is
- 4:21Golden State and the T Wolves. That's a 9:00 tip. 6:30.
- 4:24Four, they don't wait till 6:30. So actually the reason it's
- 4:279:00, OK. Push it back, I like it.
- 4:30Yeah, no, it's fine. It's fine.
- 4:32You always can hit the R button on your on your DIRECTV remote
- 4:37if indeed you can't make it up 'cause I've worn out that
- 4:40button. On mine.
- 4:41Numerous times, yeah. It was a good weekend.
- 4:43Basketball was not great by any means was what was the best game
- 4:46of the weekend was maybe it was the Minnesota game, maybe.
- 4:49Well, I mean you must go back Friday night the Thunder Nuggets
- 4:53game in overtime. Oh sure, that was yeah the best
- 4:56one. But often than that I.
- 4:57Didn't see a lot of that when I was watching my jet.
- 5:00Oh, that's right, Stars at home. And that was, Oh yeah, that was
- 5:03Friday night. And then it went back the other
- 5:06way. It did, it did, but you know,
- 5:07it's they're down to 1. Obviously tomorrow's a big
- 5:10series for the good guys if they lose.
- 5:13Yeah, sadly, probably. I means it's going to be the
- 5:15stars back in the in the Western Conference. 5 was to be 3
- 5:19straight years. I think it'd be 3, three or
- 5:21four. They seemingly get there a lot
- 5:24baseball from over the weekend. And we got to make a ruling here
- 5:26because Kate Horton, who was called up for the Cubs to pitch
- 5:30against the Mets on Saturday. We put that in the chicken coop
- 5:34promotion or the chicken coop questions.
- 5:37And the premise was was we have 12 1/2 or 13 1/2 was the number
- 5:41over under 13 and A and a half outs for Kate Horton.
- 5:44But that was based on him starting it was.
- 5:47So it's got to be a no bet. Well, we also got an opener,
- 5:51though it's not like they had a traditional and he was like a
- 5:54middle reliever or even a long. Reliever OK, so this will be the
- 5:57deciding because you know this better than I because I don't go
- 6:00to my app on I'm a futures player.
- 6:02Can you bet? Is there ever been a bet where
- 6:05relief pitcher has a number attached to his name?
- 6:09I don't believe so I believe it has to be a starter.
- 6:12Even if the game plan is this player's going to come in after
- 6:16the opener, this pitcher's going to come in.
- 6:18I don't believe so. I think it's no bet.
- 6:20I think that's right. I have not looked at last week.
- 6:23I have not taken a peek so or whether factors right if it's
- 6:26going to in fact one way or the other, but we're making an
- 6:28official ruling here I. Think that's we have to do?
- 6:30It without even looking in the notebook.
- 6:32I'm not trying to screw somebody one way or the other.
- 6:35That's not what this is. We're going to make an official
- 6:38ruling, No. Yep, he didn't start yes, but
- 6:41when he did get in the game, he looked really good.
- 6:44He did with the with the exceptional one pitch.
- 6:46He looked really good. Family was there good for them.
- 6:49They all made it there as as the most families do, but it was it
- 6:54was good to see. I think they might have
- 6:56something. Obviously, we'll, I'm not going
- 6:59to base this opinion on one start or, or one appearance
- 7:02rather, but so far so good out of him.
- 7:06Whether he's able to stack them up, that obviously remains to be
- 7:09seen, but that was good for him. Another manager was fired,
- 7:13Colorado fired their manager. And the only reason I bring it
- 7:15up is because they've got now they've got seven wins.
- 7:18Have you looked at their schedule for the next?
- 7:20I don't know for the remaining month?
- 7:21I didn't make the cut of research that I did going into.
- 7:25Today, let me just run this by for the seven win baseball team.
- 7:28Here's what the Colorado Rockies are about to embark on.
- 7:31They're going to go to Texas and play three games.
- 7:33Then they're going to go to Arizona and they're going to
- 7:34play three games. Then they're going to host
- 7:36Philadelphia for four games and here come the Yankees for three
- 7:39before they go to take on the Cubs and the Mets before they
- 7:43get the Marlins to begin June. That's what we should be putting
- 7:47an over under on is how many more wins between now and and
- 7:52the Marlins games on the 2nd of June.
- 7:56How about that for the worst team in baseball?
- 7:58Do they get to 10? They have.
- 8:01So it's 19 games that you're talking about, the series
- 8:04through that Mets series, which will end on Sunday, June 1st. 19
- 8:08games if I put the over under at 3 1/2.
- 8:13I think that's a good number. Think about that. 3 1/2 and 50
- 8:181/2 is basically your your implied record for this team.
- 8:22Rangers, Diamondbacks, Phillies, Yankees, Cubs, Mets.
- 8:27And if it was or do you have to bet aside, I'd bet the over It's
- 8:31baseball. I know they're terrible.
- 8:33They're terrible. You're still talking about four
- 8:35wins over the course of three weeks.
- 8:38I mean, as bad as the White Sox were last year, that was a much
- 8:42better team than this. Their record was significantly
- 8:44better at this point than the Colorado Rockies.
- 8:47Trevor, I lived in Denver when the Rockies were born.
- 8:50It was an absolute celebration every day at the ballpark a that
- 8:55there was Major League Baseball in downtown Denver.
- 8:58They were packing the building. I don't know what they averaged
- 9:01the first year they played at Mile High Stadium, which I mean,
- 9:04I think there was 80,000 people there on opening day.
- 9:06I think there was in the 70s for years.
- 9:10I think it's in the 80s and I think the average attendance
- 9:15that year had to be like 50 before Coors Field opened and it
- 9:20was a thing. But it's no longer a thing.
- 9:23A brand new ballpark. No, it's not brand new anymore,
- 9:26but it's still relatively new in in an area of of of Denver,
- 9:32downtown Denver. When I move there, don't go
- 9:34anywhere near that. Oh, yeah, lower downtown.
- 9:36No, no, no, no, you stay away from there.
- 9:38You make it bad to a wrong turn into there, taking your life in
- 9:41your own hands. Now it's one of the, you know,
- 9:43the hip places in the Mile High City.
- 9:45Take a stab at the announced attendance for Let's Go
- 9:49Saturday. Saturday night a 21.
- 9:52Nothing. Shellacking.
- 9:53Oh. My God.
- 9:54Announced the tenants. I don't know if this is Fanny's
- 9:56in the stands, but I did see some highlights.
- 9:58There were people there, certainly.
- 9:59Announced the tenants at Coors Field on Saturday night and they
- 10:02got B 21 zip. 21 Zero. 15,000. 38,000 Really 423 And then I
- 10:13thought when I saw that, well, it had to really, there must
- 10:17have been some event, right? They bobble head.
- 10:19Something that after the game. Yes, something like that.
- 10:22Had to be something, right? So then I look at Sunday, all
- 10:24right, What it is on Mother's Day, it can't be close to that.
- 10:28Yesterday's attendance at Coors Field, 34,400. 22 That surprised
- 10:33me how many people were at Target Field because I watched,
- 10:36I watched a lot of that watching the the Royals.
- 10:40I was watching the Royals game and I was watching the Twins.
- 10:43I was going back and forth and there were way more people at
- 10:46Kauffman, especially behind home plate.
- 10:50How many people showed up at Target Field to see the all of a
- 10:52sudden red hot Minnesota Twins? 23,000.
- 10:57On Mother's Day. 551 the fan base has checked out, that's
- 11:01what. You've said.
- 11:02They are so upset with the ownership group and then it
- 11:06finally looked like they were selling and the pull ads now
- 11:09buyer pulled away. Have you heard anything?
- 11:13No, no. Nothing.
- 11:14So you're stuck with this crappy ownership.
- 11:17You had a window, it closed, you did nothing and said you took
- 11:22away payroll. People said, well, we're staying
- 11:24away. We're not going to support this
- 11:27product even with eight straight.
- 11:29Wins if they're leading the division in let's say they, they
- 11:34continue this terror, they they them and the Tigers are in a
- 11:36real dog fight here. As we approach the All Star
- 11:39break, are people showing up? No.
- 11:42You really think so? Not, I mean not even close to
- 11:45being not 30,000 plus night in and night out, but that's.
- 11:48I mean, that's sending a message.
- 11:50It is, but that's not just a Minnesota thing.
- 11:52One thing that we have learned throughout the years as you look
- 11:54at the look at those attendance figures, it doesn't happen as
- 11:58quickly as you would think. It's because you know the reason
- 12:01that they're always driving for your season ticket pace, because
- 12:04in the grand scheme of things, that's what matters.
- 12:07Even a great run, even a great month, even a great half year
- 12:10does not translate at the level that it feels like it should in
- 12:14Major League Baseball. And that's why it's so important
- 12:16to get those checks in January, February, get those in there
- 12:20because they matter more than anything.
- 12:22Those are the ones that are going to drive exactly how your
- 12:25tenants usually looks through the course of a season.
- 12:28I got the Major League Baseball attendance for the year up here
- 12:31in. Front of me.
- 12:32Do you have last year's? I can pull it up.
- 12:34So we can see if it's up or it's down.
- 12:36I can pull that up. So for this year, the Dodgers
- 12:39leading the way, 51,000 home attendance, Padres, Yankees,
- 12:43Phillies, Mets. That's your top five in terms of
- 12:46average attendance per game. Cubs at number 830-5000 plus
- 12:51Saint Louis. We'll get to them.
- 12:54And the the red hot Saint Louis Cardinals. 13th 28,000 In change
- 12:59in the building. The Rockies are 18th with
- 13:0226,000. Surprises me. 26,000 In change
- 13:06for the Rockies at #18 we go down at #24 the Kansas City
- 13:12Royals 19,316 one spot below them, the Twins 18,000 zero 08
- 13:21their average attendance. So who's bringing up the rear?
- 13:24With the exception of the A's, because that's.
- 13:25Not and Tampa because they're. Playing Oh, they're Tampa's
- 13:27playing at Yankee spring training.
- 13:29Well, it's Miami, yeah. Above them though, at #27 the
- 13:34White Sox 16,663. Big gap.
- 13:40And we see a big gap obviously as it pertains to the, well,
- 13:47financial part is what I was looking at the Dodgers there,
- 13:49what I was saying that the Dodgers and their finances
- 13:51compared to everybody else. Absolutely.
- 13:53So let's talk about those Cardinals because don't look
- 13:55now. They've won eight in a row and
- 13:57they're a game back. So game back of the Cubs.
- 14:00You last week before we had Brian Walton on from Cardilation
- 14:04and you said, hey, you want to talk?
- 14:05And I in my head, I said what might be the last time, yeah,
- 14:09maybe we'll check in about once a month, but but this will be
- 14:13the last time that we'll talk about them being a relevant
- 14:16team. That's true.
- 14:17You know, a couple and all of a sudden they're hot.
- 14:20I flipped them on a couple of times against the nationals
- 14:22because, you know, for whatever reason, I got an affinity for
- 14:24that team of that order gonna say I love that young staff and
- 14:26really the young guys. Washington, yes, Washington.
- 14:29I, I just, I think they're coming.
- 14:31It's not happening this year and every and they're just in
- 14:34control of it. So what's happening?
- 14:37Like you look at this team, this doesn't look like a team that
- 14:40should be in contention. I don't see it.
- 14:44Veteran starting to hit a little bit, I guess get a little bit of
- 14:47good mojo, but there's nothing that you can do.
- 14:50This is the reason. Is this going to be the race?
- 14:53Oh, that. 'D be great.
- 14:55It would. Be really good.
- 14:56I hope it is. When's the last time we've had a
- 14:58cup? Cards.
- 15:01Well, I'm sure it's happened relatively recently, but I I
- 15:06guess off the top of my head I don't know for sure.
- 15:09That would be tremendous to get through a a couple of numbers
- 15:13for the Cardinals strikeouts per night.
- 15:16That is a pretty big factor in today's baseball, right?
- 15:19Straight guys out. That's what you do.
- 15:20That's why you build up your staff.
- 15:22They're 29th in baseball. Are they really 29th in
- 15:25baseball? Yeah.
- 15:28Just going through kind of the team statistics, there's nothing
- 15:32elite. Batting average, they're 4th.
- 15:35OK, but in terms of runs, they're 10th, 10th in slugging
- 15:39percentage, 19th In home runs, 20th.
- 15:42In stolen bases, runs allowed. They're 12th.
- 15:46Trent, I wasn't sure Ollie Marmol was gonna see May.
- 15:50Is he pushing the right button I.
- 15:52Don't know if it's, I don't know.
- 15:53I mean, obviously something's working.
- 15:55They're a game out of it and the cups have been hot.
- 15:57Yeah, yeah. You know, with the exception, it
- 15:59kind of wore down the end of this road trip.
- 16:01But again, is we talked about Colorado's schedule, look at the
- 16:05Cubs schedule, it's about to get a whole lot easier.
- 16:08Cincinnati, Colorado, Cincinnati, Washington, Detroit,
- 16:12Miami's in town. They got the White Sox after
- 16:15that. So there there's a lot of
- 16:17winnable baseball teams for the our games, rather for the North
- 16:19Siders coming up. And now Speaking of the
- 16:21Cardinals going forward, we just talked about that rocky
- 16:24schedule. This isn't that difficult, but
- 16:27we're going to know a lot more before we get to June at the
- 16:30Phillies starting tonight. Then they go to Kansas City for
- 16:33three, home for the Tigers, the best team in the American League
- 16:36for three Diamondbacks, who we both think is a good.
- 16:38Team they are. They go to Baltimore, bit of a
- 16:41respite, but then two. Texas after that and then back
- 16:44on beginning of June for three games with the Royals, then the
- 16:47Dodgers. When do they see the Cubs?
- 16:50They got a four-game series at home against the Cubs for four
- 16:55late June. Is that the did they play them
- 16:58toward the end of September, If we're going to, if we're going
- 17:01to have the Cubs and the Cards? Last one of the year.
- 17:03Is it that's they finished the season?
- 17:05Awesome. In Chicago Wrigley Friday 1:20
- 17:09Saturday 1/20 Sunday as everybody be playing at the.
- 17:12Same time on Sunday. Well, schedule maker maybe got
- 17:16one right this time. Speaking of the schedule maker,
- 17:19it is NFL schedule leaks for the first three days of the week.
- 17:23I get such a kick out of my truly dope.
- 17:25Well, for a while you were getting duped.
- 17:27Yeah, I know, but I was willingly getting duped because
- 17:30I just wanted to see something. But when the when the NFL puts
- 17:33their, you know, their their mark on it.
- 17:35If you they they've announced opening night's going to be the
- 17:39Cowboys and the Eagles as the Super Bowl champs will lift the
- 17:42curtain on the season. You like that game?
- 17:45I do. I enjoy having the Cowboys rival
- 17:50the Cowboys involved. America's team.
- 17:54Yes they are. I I enjoyed it when I saw that
- 17:58was it today today? Yeah, this morning, this morning
- 18:01when I thought I'm like, yeah, that's good, I'm happy with
- 18:03that. I'm fine with that because the
- 18:04other ones, well, I thought the. Rams made sense.
- 18:07It made sense. But you can save that game.
- 18:11Yeah, you can save that game. I didn't love it.
- 18:13I don't know why. And I know Rams gave him a game,
- 18:16the only team that gave him a game in the playoffs.
- 18:18I didn't love it. Maybe it's just the uniform
- 18:21game, getting a uniform game like that to kick it off.
- 18:23No, it's pretty good. I'm with you, I'm with you.
- 18:26This and. It's Dallas it's well they're
- 18:27still relevant right use those TV games early in the year
- 18:29before if they do fall out of contention before we get we
- 18:33don't need to see we. We tried to make a case for the
- 18:35Cowboys last week and I, I think you, you sold it.
- 18:39I'm not sure I bought it as much as you.
- 18:44I mean, the Giants are clearly 4th and then the and the Eagles
- 18:48and the and the Commanders and the Cowboys and where are they
- 18:50going to fit in? Yeah, I guess at the end of the
- 18:52day, I mean, I have no problem with it.
- 18:54It's a divisional game, obviously.
- 18:56I think it's only the third time that it that's that they started
- 18:59doing this Super Bowl champ playing on Thursday.
- 19:02That has been a divisional game. And by the way, every single
- 19:05time it's been, it's been the NFC East that's lifted the
- 19:09curtain. The Bears Packers played a few
- 19:12years back in a Thursday game that did not involve the Super
- 19:15Bowl champ. What was that five years ago?
- 19:17They didn't remember and I hated it.
- 19:18I absolutely despised why. Who was the Super Bowl champ
- 19:21then? I don't remember what the
- 19:22reasoning was behind it now, but I just remember that it was It
- 19:25was the kickoff to the season and for whatever reason.
- 19:28And the defending champs couldn't.
- 19:29Play. Was it coming on the heels of
- 19:312020 or there was something, there was an oddity that led to
- 19:35it and they didn't like it? Yeah, that's the Super Bowl
- 19:38champ that is. That's the reserve for the
- 19:40winner of the Super Bowl. It is basically every year.
- 19:43Let's try to keep it every year. Yeah, I, I, I don't remember
- 19:46that being the case. I'm not saying you're wrong, but
- 19:49you'd remember you're a Bears fan.
- 19:51Yes. And they're going to have a
- 19:52really good year, Trent. This is their year, Trent.
- 19:55Do you think so? They're a playoff bound team,
- 19:57Trent, so put that in your pipe and smoke it.
- 20:01So I bet a a Big 12 school this weekend in football to win the
- 20:06conference. Do you have any idea who it is?
- 20:08A Big 12 school. I was just.
- 20:10Business around I, I think the Mets are going to win the
- 20:13division. I I want to try to, you know I
- 20:15like stacking things together, right?
- 20:17OK. So I don't know how I got on
- 20:19this, but but I did and, and I and I open my app and I'm
- 20:24clicking through college football and I see conference
- 20:27winners. So I'm starting to sniff around
- 20:28in there a little bit. So I I landed on the Big 12.
- 20:32And the Big 12, All right, let me see if I can.
- 20:34Are the odds up currently? They're at DraftKings.
- 20:37All right, Big 12. All right, I I pulled up.
- 20:40What do I got here? Bet Rivers.
- 20:42OK, bet Rivers has it now. Yes, I couldn't find it the
- 20:45other day. Bet Rivers Big 12 champion
- 20:48You're betting favorites. Co Favorites.
- 20:50Oh, there's Co favorites, OK. Are the Kansas State Wildcats?
- 20:54Really. And the Sun Devils.
- 20:55And the Arizona State. K State's the Second are Co
- 20:58favorites. Co favorite 11 to 2 + 550.
- 21:01A little better than 5 to 1 odds.
- 21:03I don't think either of those teams does it.
- 21:05Well, did you, were you impressed by Avery Johnson last
- 21:08year? No, I thought that.
- 21:09I mean, I would have. I thought he's going to be way
- 21:12better, right? And maybe it's a me thing so,
- 21:14but I don't think it is. We were also hanging out with
- 21:17Kim K State people in Vegas and they were selling us.
- 21:21They were trying to sell us hard.
- 21:23And Avery Johnson was going to be, well, Howard let him go.
- 21:26He's nothing. We got Avery Johnson.
- 21:28Yep, he's got a long ways. BYU 7 to one, OK, as is Baylor,
- 21:33as is Texas Tech. I don't think you jumped to
- 21:36border those kind of prices. What's Texas Tech?
- 21:417 to 1. Baylor and BYU all 7 to 1.
- 21:44I bet Texas Tech. It was Texas Tech.
- 21:46And the Mets. So what did you get them at?
- 21:48DraftKings? About the same price.
- 21:49Same price, same price 7 to 1. So Lucas just sent me a text.
- 21:52Let me, let's finish up. The Patriots were the Champions
- 21:55that year. It was the NF LS 100th season.
- 21:59They wanted the Bears and the Packers.
- 22:00Gotcha. Thanks, Lucas.
- 22:02Told you, why don't you listen to me?
- 22:04I I did say you were wrong. I just didn't remember the the
- 22:06circumstances. So thank you, Lucas.
- 22:08Thank you, Lucas. Iowa State is 11 to one.
- 22:13Why at these Now I know you don't want to bet any of the
- 22:16locals. I won't, no.
- 22:18I don't care about betting the locals.
- 22:19I bet the locals all the time. I was state at 11:00 to 1:00.
- 22:23What is it about BYU and Baylor in Texas City, Kansas?
- 22:26In Utah? These are all teams.
- 22:28No, I don't like Utah. I don't like Utah.
- 22:30I don't get that one bit. They're the 8th betting choice.
- 22:36I'll be out here. This seems dead.
- 22:38Wrong. Well, Texas Tech has unlimited
- 22:41supply cash for the football team, and they had a great
- 22:44portal season. You want to call it that Iowa
- 22:49State. So why are folks maybe the
- 22:50receivers, maybe they're not sold on Townsend and is it so
- 22:54well or sold? So John Walters, when we had him
- 22:57on last, he said what it was so well, I so well.
- 22:59Yes, that's what I think he said, yes.
- 23:02So maybe that's the question, I guess.
- 23:07What? What else did they lose?
- 23:09We hear the offensive line hasn't taken a step back at all.
- 23:12The running backs are still the same.
- 23:13Obviously, the most position, most important position in all
- 23:16of sports hasn't changed. Is it the fact that the
- 23:19receivers are gone? Tight ends should be back to
- 23:22health. Iowa State's 12 to one at
- 23:25DraftKings. I don't get it.
- 23:28And what? Who's the favorite at
- 23:29DraftKings? Remind me?
- 23:30Co favorites also K State in Arizona State state yes.
- 23:35Boy, that arm, that Armageddon, the Ireland game, what are we
- 23:38calling it? Farmageddon.
- 23:39Farmageddon. Yes, it's a big one.
- 23:42It's a huge game. The.
- 23:43Importance of that right? Oh my God.
- 23:45You're going to be sitting with that one and O at the top of the
- 23:47egg and type for. Three weeks, September, yes, How
- 23:50about that? That's a big spot.
- 23:53Is the point spread out? Didn't we say it was out and
- 23:55wasn't Iowa State was getting how many?
- 23:572 1/2. Is it changed I?
- 24:00Don't believe so. Game lines.
- 24:03I think Circa is coming up with their games of the week, by the
- 24:05way, this week. Oh, nice games of the year.
- 24:07Beg your pardon. There has been a point spread
- 24:10change for the open SO. Iowa State is now getting how
- 24:13many? 3 1/2.
- 24:14Above a field goal. North of a field goal, you want
- 24:17to play the money line plus 136 on the clones.
- 24:20Just pay for your trip. Don't do that.
- 24:23No, that's anybody listening. Yes, don't do that.
- 24:26Fall victim to that one. That's wrong.
- 24:30I you like Iowa State. Admittedly, I have not started
- 24:33my dive into other teams in the conferences, but on the surface
- 24:39of these numbers here, give me Iowa State at DraftKings at 11.
- 24:44Give me a DraftKings 12 to one. Excuse me, 11 to one at Bet
- 24:47Rivers. We'll see what Circa comes out
- 24:49with. Wow, that is very, very
- 24:54surprising to me. We will take a time out.
- 24:56Before we do that though, let's try and give somebody a chance
- 24:58to win $1000 of this contest in its waning weeks.
- 25:02Head to kxno.com. Once you get there, a pop up box
- 25:06will appear. The keyword this hour is money.
- 25:08Money at kxno.com. Your chance to win $1000 money

- 25:26back Iowa sports Radio Network with you until 2:00.
- 25:30Let's talk to Alec Bussey covers Iowa State cyclonealert.com part
- 25:34of 24/7 sports 24/7 sports. Alec joins us Alec Trenton Ken
- 25:38thanks for joining us here on Monday.
- 25:41We truly appreciate it and really appreciate the content
- 25:43you put out on Mondays, your weekly thoughts and no bonus out
- 25:47there today with the power rankings when it comes to Big 12
- 25:50football that have been put together by the fine folks at
- 25:5424/7. And I guess let's start there.
- 25:57First of all, good afternoon. Thank you.
- 26:01At the top Arizona State, that's the consensus amongst the team
- 26:05over there that they repeat. Obviously the quarterback is
- 26:09back, Levitt's back, Lou Scatibow, lose a couple of
- 26:12dudes, but from the feast of famine department, right?
- 26:16Everybody picked them last this time last year.
- 26:18Not only would they win, but they're picked to repeat quite a
- 26:21story. The Sun Double S.
- 26:24Yeah, I think Kenny Dillingham has done a great job there.
- 26:27Obviously he's entering his third year.
- 26:28He kind of inherited a mess of a program that had self-imposed
- 26:32bull bands entering his first year.
- 26:34Believe he goes just three and nine back in 2023.
- 26:37But last year they're probably right up there with Indiana as
- 26:40the biggest surprises. College football, you mentioned
- 26:43how you know they lose Cam Scataboo and I think that that's
- 26:47obviously a big deal. But they also returned.
- 26:49Sam Levitt. They returned.
- 26:50Jordan Tyson, 1000 yard wide receiver on the outside, they
- 26:54returned. That's the kid that was hurt for
- 26:55the Bull, for their Bulls or for their playoffs.
- 26:58Right. And the championship.
- 26:59And the champion. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:01Yeah, yeah. Tyson did not play the Big 12
- 27:03championship game either. Believe it was a shoulder injury
- 27:06for him. They returned Tyson.
- 27:08They returned a really physical, impressive tight end.
- 27:11Metier. Metier, I believe, is how you
- 27:13pronounce the last name. It's French, but they also
- 27:16returned their entire starting offensive line.
- 27:18So Arizona State, to me should be the favorite of the Big 12
- 27:22this coming year, especially because they added some
- 27:25impactful rushers as well, including armies running back.
- 27:28He was very productive last year.
- 27:30He was in high demand across the country as well.
- 27:33I think Texas Tech, another team at the top of our rankings that
- 27:36Cody Nagle put together, they've invested a lot of money into
- 27:40this roster, upwards of 35 to $40 million.
- 27:44Like Kurt Signetti said in Indiana a few weeks ago, say
- 27:48daddy obviously. Does that hold back his
- 27:50feelings? I think that's why a lot of
- 27:51people really like him or dislike him, whichever side of
- 27:54the spectrum you fall on there. And they spent $10 million alone
- 27:58in the winter trans report. I think Max Olson of ESPN was
- 28:01the first to report that. I think Iowa State kind of in a
- 28:04similar spot here, right there in the top four or five of a lot
- 28:08of people's projections in the conference.
- 28:10You know, they have to replace a lot of production in names on
- 28:14the offensive and defensive lines, but they return a lot of
- 28:16playmakers, especially on offense, headlined by Rocco back
- 28:20to a couple impactful rushers like Carson Hanson and Abu Sama.
- 28:24Another team that I really like that I think how do you ranked
- 28:27in his top five as well is BYU. They return Jake Ratzlaff, a
- 28:31quarterback, obviously he's become known as like the BYU
- 28:35because he's a Jewish quarterback at BYU, which I
- 28:37think is a fun storyline. They return their leading
- 28:40rusher, LJ Martin, their top receiver, Chase Roberts.
- 28:44And we always know how good and physical BYU teams tend to be at
- 28:47the line of scrimmage under Kalani Sataki.
- 28:49And, you know, I would say it's Week 1 opponent, or I should say
- 28:52Week 0 opponent, K State. All this picking at the top of
- 28:54the conference. They have to replace a couple
- 28:57important people on offense, including across the offensive
- 29:01line. But Avery Johnson is back.
- 29:02Quarterback Dylan Edwards will step into the RV one role for
- 29:06for K State. And then obviously, you know,
- 29:09Joe Clanderman, their defensive coordinator does a good job down
- 29:11there in Manhattan as well. So it should be a fun year in
- 29:14the Big 12 as always. And I'm sure there's going to be
- 29:16some team in the bottom half that is competing to get to the
- 29:21conference title within the last couple of weeks, just like we
- 29:23saw last year with BYU and Arizona State both in that group
- 29:27and to a certain extent Colorado as well.
- 29:28Let. Me ask you about K State
- 29:29Trenton, I talked about this in our first segment.
- 29:32We, we both had higher expectations for Avery Johnson
- 29:35last year. Maybe this unfair, maybe this
- 29:36was an US thing, but he ran off Will Howard who went on to Ohio
- 29:40State. That turned out pretty well, as
- 29:42as we know, but I guess I just expected Avery Johnson to just
- 29:46take this league by storm. What were your?
- 29:50What are? Your thoughts on what he did
- 29:51last year and he's is he got another level to his play, do
- 29:55you think? Yeah.
- 29:57I think in a certain sense, Avery Johnson might be a little
- 29:59bit of a victim of the media machine he experienced a year
- 30:03ago. He was one of the most
- 30:05anticipated quarterbacks to make his debut a season ago.
- 30:08You talked about K State running off well, Howard, to make Avery
- 30:12Johnson their starting quarterback.
- 30:14I think that was as much of a product of a time value where
- 30:18they felt they could have Avery Johnson be their starting
- 30:21quarterback for 2-3, maybe four years where they knew they had
- 30:23just one more season with Bill Howard.
- 30:26You know, Avery Johnson statistically had a good season.
- 30:29I don't think it was maybe a great season.
- 30:31Completed less than 60% of his passes.
- 30:34Believe he had 25 touchdowns, ran for over 506 hundred yards
- 30:38somewhere in that range. And we know he's a really
- 30:40dynamic, fast runner. I think that's something that KT
- 30:43is going to do with him more this season with a new offensive
- 30:46play caller. He is someone who who can throw
- 30:49the ball. I think it's an area of his game
- 30:50that's still developing as he kind of grows more and more into
- 30:55it. He's a really good athlete.
- 30:56He's a really good just quick mover.
- 30:59I think getting Jace Brown back at receiver will really help
- 31:03them this upcoming season because he was, you know, an 800
- 31:08yard receiver a year ago in his first big opportunity in K
- 31:11States offense. But I think it's worth pointing
- 31:13out that I think every Johnson sent set the single season
- 31:16passing touchdown record at K State.
- 31:19A lot of people may not know. Now, that's obviously all
- 31:22relative. You, you set a record.
- 31:24It's relative to the success of people before you.
- 31:26In case they tag good quarter. Yes, they have Culverson, Colin
- 31:30Klein. Yeah, Michael Bishop, people
- 31:33like that that have been very impactful and successful in
- 31:36their career. So it's not like Avery Johnson,
- 31:38you know, was setting records held by people in the 1920s.
- 31:43Hey Alec, want to jump to the bottom of your weekly thoughts
- 31:46article? And it's about the what looks to
- 31:48be almost rubber stamped 16 team playoff is coming starting in
- 31:522026. Here's the part that I can't
- 31:56wrap my mind around. All right, so SEC Big 10,
- 31:59they're going to have the three seed against the 6A, four
- 32:02against the five. Winner gets an automatic spot
- 32:04into the playoff. What is the reasoning?
- 32:06Why would you even clean your conference championship game
- 32:09outside of seeding of week off? Because if you're a 16 team
- 32:13playoff, everybody's obviously playing in the first round.
- 32:17That means no time off. Why is anybody going to play in
- 32:19their conference championship game knowing it's not going to
- 32:22help you? You're going to have to play
- 32:23that following week. Yeah, I think, you know one
- 32:26thing that I found interesting. Ross Dellinger wrote a story
- 32:29about this, I think back in February, just about all the
- 32:32different possibilities and within his long story, and you
- 32:36can check it out on Yahoo, he's linked it a few times in the
- 32:39last couple of days on his Twitter X account.
- 32:42He never specifically reported that conferences were seriously
- 32:45considering getting rid of their championship games.
- 32:47He kind of included it within a list of five or six questions,
- 32:52which I find really interesting because I don't really think you
- 32:55should report with questions very often in long stories like
- 32:58that. Like that's not really reporting
- 33:00in my opinion. And Rock does great work.
- 33:02I'm not trying to be critical of him.
- 33:04He's an awesome reporter. He does a great job with all the
- 33:06legal stuff and CFP legislative stuff in college football.
- 33:11I think there's a possibility that I guess you potentially see
- 33:14conference championship games go away if they do a 16 team CFP.
- 33:20I would hate that. But I guess you're also getting
- 33:22increased inventory on what we now know as conference
- 33:26championship weekend because you would have, like you mentioned
- 33:29there, Trent, you know, three playing 64 playing 5 for the
- 33:33opportunity of those teams to get automatic bids in the Big
- 33:3612. And in the ACC, you would have
- 33:41presumably one playing 4/2 playing three.
- 33:44The winners of those games getting automatic bids because
- 33:47they're those two conferences will each get two bids with the
- 33:5116 teams CSP or 14 teams CSP, whichever they decide to do.
- 33:55And then there's 3 automatic bids and one bid reserved for
- 33:58the highest ranked Group of Five champion.
- 34:00And that is guaranteed until I believe 2032 when the current
- 34:04CSP contract ends. So I'm a proponent of it moving
- 34:08to 16 because I think 14 is just a really dumb number.
- 34:12Like if you're going to move to 14, just go to 16 because you
- 34:15eventually you're going to get there.
- 34:17Personally, I really liked 12. There's tinkering that I would
- 34:20make to 12. I think that accurately seeding
- 34:24it makes a lot of sense. The deliberate misleading of it
- 34:26this past season. I think it's confusing for fans.
- 34:29It makes no sense to casual fans.
- 34:32Not that we should be catering too much to those people in
- 34:34college football, but I do think you want it to be easy to
- 34:36understand. And I don't think that that
- 34:38necessarily was a year ago. So I do think that fixing that
- 34:44this upcoming season should be a priority.
- 34:45But big picture into the future, I do think that there is value
- 34:49in moving to 16 instead of being at at 14.
- 34:54What is there Is there any way we could use the final week of
- 34:57the Thanksgiving weekend to as a semi final before those
- 35:01conference championship? I'm trying to figure it out
- 35:03because I I don't want to lose them personally, but I could
- 35:07see. I mean, Trent's point is spot
- 35:09on. Why bother, you know, But I
- 35:12wonder if they if you can come up with this with the system
- 35:15that there's a carrot on Thanksgiving weekend to get into
- 35:18the and it's just be seating right.
- 35:22Yeah. And I think the issue is if you
- 35:25do get rid of conference championship games.
- 35:28And I think the big reason that there's a push from the two big
- 35:32power brokers, the Big 10, the SEC for a changing in structure,
- 35:36obviously, one is the financials of it.
- 35:38That's what motivates everyone in today's society.
- 35:41But secondly, I think another thing that the Big 10 and SEC
- 35:45saw and felt this first season is their conference championship
- 35:49games meant nothing. There was no stakes on either of
- 35:52those games. The winners were going to get
- 35:54in, the losers were going to get in.
- 35:56And that was, in my opinion, a motivation behind the 14 team
- 36:00was, hey, we know that our two teams are going to be our two
- 36:03highest champions, going to be the the highest ranked teams.
- 36:07So if we do 14, those two teams are going to get a buy.
- 36:10But I think they're also realizing like 14 is dumb.
- 36:13And I also think that expanding to 16 probably pleases the Big
- 36:1812 and the ACC parties a little bit.
- 36:22Frankly, I think that what the, the ACC and the Big 12 should
- 36:26propose because they don't have much leverage in this current
- 36:29setting or climate is like a scheduling agreement of some
- 36:34sort in the offseason of, or excuse me, in the non conference
- 36:37to say, hey, we, we understand that we're going to lose bids to
- 36:41you guys, automatic bids to you guys every CSP.
- 36:45But in exchange for that, you're going to play us in the non
- 36:47conference. We're going to have a rotating
- 36:49thing every every year where we'll play each other every
- 36:53year. And if you're the Big 12 in the
- 36:54ACC, there's a lot of value in that because you're welcoming
- 36:57teams like Alabama to Ames, IA, or you're welcoming a Florida to
- 37:02Boston College or whatever example you want to use.
- 37:05And not only did that help you saw at your stadium, obviously,
- 37:08but more importantly, you know that potentially gives you a
- 37:12really marquee win either at home or on the road to improve
- 37:17your resume as an at large team, which I think is valuable as
- 37:20well. Good stuff.
- 37:22Do we have time for one more quick question, basketball, Why?
- 37:25And this was in your column. The challenge, the coaches
- 37:27challenge might be on the table. Is that as soon as this year and
- 37:32if the coach say TJ challenges, he wins the challenge, he gets
- 37:37another one. He also doesn't have to burn a
- 37:38time out if he loses, obviously gets no more challenges and cost
- 37:42him a time out. Is that a potential change that
- 37:44could be in place for this season, Alec?
- 37:48It is. It's something that the
- 37:49committees will all have to kind of vote on and go through and
- 37:53determine if it's something that they want to use.
- 37:55I think one of the big motivations behind it is the
- 37:58idea of limiting monitor reviews in the last minutes of the game.
- 38:04I know that that's something a lot of people have talked about
- 38:07is how annoying and frustrating those can be.
- 38:10I would also say a reason that I think they want to do it in
- 38:13terms of the the monitor reviews or to challenge it's to get rid
- 38:18of the reviewing of possession I guess, or who the ball went out
- 38:23of bounds of late in games as well because they wouldn't
- 38:27review that unless it was challenged late in games.
- 38:30And you're only allowed to review that last two minutes
- 38:32currently. So I think that's another
- 38:34motivation for it right now. We'll see.
- 38:36Fingers crossed. Good stuff.
- 38:37Alec Bussey, 24/7 Sports, cyclonealert.com I know you're
- 38:41in with Sean tomorrow morning. Look forward to that.
- 38:44Are you doing the drive this afternoon?
- 38:46Power Hour. Yeah, I will be in studio on
- 38:49this afternoon with Lucas and Heather.
- 38:50I don't know if Dave's going to make it in, but I hope to to
- 38:54join him in there because I will be in studio.
- 38:55Good stuff. Thank you buddy.
- 38:57Have a good week. Thanks guys.
- 38:59Have a great day. Good.
- 38:59To talk to you Alec Bussey 24/7 Sports cyclonework.com Come back
- 39:03up, come back and wrap up our number one that's next Miller
- 39:06and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 39:09I'm Hillary Condon, welcome back.
- 39:10Final couple of minutes of the first hour.
- 39:12So we didn't have much time to get into with with Alec Bussey
- 39:15the potential of a challenge system coming to college
- 39:19basketball. I mean on the surface, what's
- 39:22what's they're not to like? As long as it's quick.
- 39:25As long as it's quick, and if it does away with some of the
- 39:27monitor challenges, I'm not sure how that'll happen.
- 39:30But if you can make that quick, that's what drives people nuts.
- 39:34Basketball games, it's just extending it like that.
- 39:38And if you get one challenge, if there's an egregious miss and
- 39:40you've still got your challenge, you can use it.
- 39:43You get it right, you keep it and you can do it again.
- 39:46I mean, I on the surface, what's not to like?
- 39:49It is what you want. Get that thing because it's
- 39:52awful and the game scenarios, It annoys my wife.
- 39:56It annoys everybody. I'm sure a lot of people out
- 39:58there. How?
- 39:59Especially if your game's supposed to start at 8:05.
- 40:02Absolutely. Plenty of those too, as you're
- 40:04waiting and waiting and they're going through it all.
- 40:06Yeah, I mean. It just doesn't find it on the
- 40:08ESPN app. Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:10And then you're getting out your phone, you're getting out your
- 40:12iPad. You're trying to figure that
- 40:13out. It's just not the same if it
- 40:15actually happens. But this one is not one of the
- 40:18proposed rule changes about the fouls, right?
- 40:21The college basketball, they've been trying to do this last 50
- 40:25years and it doesn't change. Freedom of movement, right?
- 40:28And by the time we get to January, it's that's the same
- 40:30guard. The way it was.
- 40:31Yeah, clutch and hold and grab and do everything possible.
- 40:34November officiating gets a little different when conference
- 40:36play starts, is it not? But if we have a hard and fast
- 40:40rule, this many challenges. And and I think 1's the good
- 40:43number. Coupled with how many times they
- 40:46can go to the monitor as officials, can we put a number
- 40:49on them? Yeah, we want to get it right,
- 40:52but there's so many times it feels like they.
- 40:54Take the easy way out. Know that they can go to the
- 40:56monitor what's? It called something.
- 40:59I think there's something there, so let's go look.
- 41:02Do your job. Yeah, if it's not there the
- 41:03first time, it's not going to mysteriously just.
- 41:06Pop up, that's another thing. Hour 2 coming up next, talk
- 41:08baseball with Matt Snyder to kick it off John Boenkamp on the
- 41:11Hawks number in Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
