- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
- 0:05Speaker 1: The rex was not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: You love sandwiches. Huh, Let's go to eighty. It was
- 0:14Speaker 1: bo wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush
- 0:18Speaker 1: on Betty Rubble.
- 0:19Speaker 2: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 2: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game. You're listening to to Godson Company.
- 0:32Speaker 2: It is to Gods and Company, presented by FanDuel and
- 0:34Speaker 2: the FanDuel Sportsbook. Coach Mike Alco, Texas A and m
- 0:37Speaker 2: I'm going to join us in about fifteen minutes or so.
- 0:41Speaker 2: That's how we kick off every football season. It feels
- 0:43Speaker 2: like Mike. I don't think football starts until we have
- 0:45Speaker 2: Mike Alco on the show with us.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Mike Alco is the starting gun for our football season.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Now we can get into it.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yes, we'll have to get into the Yankees with him
- 0:55Speaker 2: as well. He's a big Yankee fan. I am with
- 0:58Speaker 2: two Yankee fans right now, Taylor and Mikeya Taylor, I
- 1:02Speaker 2: think a slightly bigger Yankee fan than you, Mike Ya.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Is that fair or no?
- 1:07Speaker 3: Younger? He's a younger Yankee fan. I'm a married with
- 1:10Speaker 3: kids Yankee fan. He's a I can go to a
- 1:12Speaker 3: game whenever I want, right Yankee fan.
- 1:14Speaker 1: How'd you guys feel about school ball?
- 1:18Speaker 4: I I really don't mind it because anybody could have
- 1:20Speaker 4: traded for Trek Scooble. My problem with the Dodgers, yeah,
- 1:24Speaker 4: is when they sign them in this offseason for a
- 1:27Speaker 4: five hundred million dollar contract, and four hundred and eighty
- 1:30Speaker 4: of it is deferred until Trek Scoobel's grandkids are alive
- 1:34Speaker 4: in twenty seventy seventy. That's that's where I'm putting the
- 1:38Speaker 4: blame in all of this. But I'm not blaming the
- 1:40Speaker 4: Dodgers for operating as a team that wants to win
- 1:44Speaker 4: a World Series. They're making their roster better. They have
- 1:47Speaker 4: the best farm system in baseball, which is crazy. Yep,
- 1:50Speaker 4: they're utilizing that, Yes they are.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I think people would be surprised at how many teams
- 1:55Speaker 2: where the number one goal isn't to win every year
- 1:58Speaker 2: the Dodgers' number one goal. That's album for baseball. It's
- 2:01Speaker 2: a massive problem for Major League baseball, but at least
- 2:04Speaker 2: the Dodgers on the front end tell you every season, Hey,
- 2:06Speaker 2: we are trying to win the World Series.
- 2:08Speaker 4: We need more Dodgers and less Miami Marlins. We need less.
- 2:13Speaker 4: We need less, Tampa Bay Rays, we need less Milwaukee Brewers.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Where the Brewers and the Rays were two teams that
- 2:19Speaker 4: were linked with the idea of Tyrek scuball right, and
- 2:22Speaker 4: they kind of just balked at the price where the
- 2:24Speaker 4: Dodgers trade a top twenty five prospect for what turns
- 2:27Speaker 4: out to be a three month rental in school ball,
- 2:30Speaker 4: but schoo Ball is most likely going to re sign
- 2:32Speaker 4: with the Dodgers. The other teams just didn't think it
- 2:35Speaker 4: was worth it to make their team more more of
- 2:38Speaker 4: a World Series contender.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Well, you got teams like the Rays and the Brewers
- 2:43Speaker 3: who rely so heavily on their farm system and to
- 2:46Speaker 3: just keep churning out players that the idea of giving
- 2:49Speaker 3: up will set them back so many years because they're
- 2:53Speaker 3: not going to be able to sign to school ball
- 2:56Speaker 3: in the offseason. They have to hold on to those
- 2:59Speaker 3: prospects and keep the line moving.
- 3:02Speaker 4: The problem, though, is the Brewers have the best record
- 3:04Speaker 4: in the National League right now, getting Schooble and keeping
- 3:08Speaker 4: Schooble more importantly off the Dodgers helps your chances greatly
- 3:13Speaker 4: this postseason where you're basically just telling your team, we
- 3:17Speaker 4: don't really think this team is a World Series contender
- 3:20Speaker 4: or the pieces that you have already are a world
- 3:23Speaker 4: World Series contender, where Miz and Schooble would have been
- 3:26Speaker 4: the best one two punch in baseball.
- 3:28Speaker 2: But I think what Mikeya is saying, if you're the
- 3:30Speaker 2: Brewers and you can't sign Schooble past this year, what's
- 3:33Speaker 2: the point in giving up the prospects?
- 3:35Speaker 5: You know they did it once with CC remember, yes.
- 3:38Speaker 4: Yes, the point of trading the prospects, yes, yes, trying
- 3:41Speaker 4: trying to capitalize on a team that's the best team
- 3:44Speaker 4: in the National League and telling your team, hey, we
- 3:46Speaker 4: think this team can win a World Series. And if
- 3:49Speaker 4: you win a World Series, as the Brewers, if if
- 3:51Speaker 4: they get Scooble and their offense win wins the World Series,
- 3:55Speaker 4: you're telling me Schooble is just gonna leave that situation
- 3:58Speaker 4: and just go to the tests.
- 4:00Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so? Yeah?
- 4:00Speaker 1: Cause of money? Right, like Taylor, here's the alternative to that. Okay,
- 4:04Speaker 1: you get school Ball, you give up the.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Prospects, you don't win the World Series, and school bul
- 4:08Speaker 2: goes to the Dodgers next year.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Anyway, I mean, now you've lost prospects.
- 4:12Speaker 2: You didn't get to the World Series, you didn't win
- 4:14Speaker 2: the World Series, you've traded away prospects, and school Bols
- 4:17Speaker 2: going to LA whether you like it or not.
- 4:20Speaker 3: Listen, school is a hell of a pitcher. Let let's
- 4:23Speaker 3: not get it mixed up. But you're talking about the
- 4:24Speaker 3: guy who is like, I'm gonna pitch three innings in
- 4:27Speaker 3: the World Baseball Classic for my country. I'm going to
- 4:29Speaker 3: take up a roster spot. But you think he's gonna
- 4:31Speaker 3: give the Milwaukee Brewers a home field discount, a home
- 4:34Speaker 3: team discount because he's played three months there and won
- 4:37Speaker 3: a World Series. Now he's going wherever the biggest price
- 4:40Speaker 3: tag is next year.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Right now, I'm looking at the list of the richest
- 4:44Speaker 4: people in the world. Yeah, and I'm putting the bat
- 4:47Speaker 4: signal out to them and saying, hey, Bezos, buy the
- 4:50Speaker 4: Washington Nationals, Buy some of these smaller market teams so
- 4:54Speaker 4: that we could get some competitive balance in here. Because honestly,
- 4:58Speaker 4: Schooble going to the to the Dodgers. Was every owner
- 5:02Speaker 4: in Baseball's dream right now because they want the Dodgers
- 5:06Speaker 4: to overpower like this to force the salary cap conversation
- 5:10Speaker 4: through in the next labor agreements with Baseball, and all
- 5:14Speaker 4: it's doing Scooble going to the Dodgers is strengthening the
- 5:17Speaker 4: perception that the league has to do something to stop this.
- 5:21Speaker 2: The B and bezo stands for bat signal. How about
- 5:23Speaker 2: that Brewers?
- 5:24Speaker 4: It should stand for Brewers by the Brewers at a Brewers.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yes, wait, why aren't you guys angry at the Yankees
- 5:30Speaker 2: for not getting schooable?
- 5:31Speaker 1: I figured that's where you were gonna.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Go because the Yankees. The Yankees have a great pitching
- 5:36Speaker 4: staff already, right, Like, unless Trek Scuble comes here and
- 5:40Speaker 4: all of a sudden he could beat three hundred and
- 5:42Speaker 4: hit fifty home runs, he's not really doing much to
- 5:45Speaker 4: help us out. We have a great rotation. Since the
- 5:48Speaker 4: Yankees lost Aaron Judge in mid June, they have the
- 5:51Speaker 4: worst offense in all of baseball. Trek's Scouble is just
- 5:57Speaker 4: a Lamborghini in a low income neighborhood. Like, we don't
- 6:02Speaker 4: we don't need Derek Scouble. We have an excess of
- 6:05Speaker 4: pitching right now, where, if anything, we should be trying
- 6:08Speaker 4: to trade some of the pitching the Will Warrens and
- 6:10Speaker 4: seeing can we get a reliever, Can we get a catcher,
- 6:13Speaker 4: Can we get a third baseman, Can we get a
- 6:14Speaker 4: short stuff? We have other needs.
- 6:17Speaker 5: I am so sick.
- 6:19Speaker 3: And as we record this, we're hours away from the
- 6:21Speaker 3: deadline still, so something could still happen. But the idea
- 6:26Speaker 3: of Brian Cashman makes me so angry because you look
- 6:30Speaker 3: at this team and you go, they don't need starting pitching.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Well, guess what they were in on Schooble.
- 6:34Speaker 3: They don't need a left handed bat, they don't need
- 6:38Speaker 3: a second basement, they don't need a first baseman. And
- 6:40Speaker 3: what did they do. They traded for a left handed
- 6:43Speaker 3: second basement first baseman. And they're like, oh, we got
- 6:47Speaker 3: another big bat. He's gonna love the short porch and left.
- 6:50Speaker 3: You know what, fix the problems on the team. Don't
- 6:54Speaker 3: just go hey, we're gonna go make a headline move.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Wait a second, but Taylor, aren't the lefties in the
- 6:59Speaker 2: Yankees line up hurt?
- 7:00Speaker 1: This guy is third in the league in ops.
- 7:02Speaker 4: I mean, so this is where I don't agree with Mikey.
- 7:05Speaker 6: Where's he gonna play? Where's he gonna play?
- 7:07Speaker 1: Doesn't fit right right now?
- 7:10Speaker 4: He probably projects as a platoon at first base with
- 7:14Speaker 4: with Paul gold Schmidt at d H and first base
- 7:18Speaker 4: right against Righty's He's batting two ninety five, two ninety
- 7:20Speaker 4: five in this Yankee lineup might as well be Tony
- 7:22Speaker 4: gwyn batting three eighties in the in the nineties.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Where Where's Ben Rice?
- 7:27Speaker 7: In that the guy who might win the MVP, who
- 7:30Speaker 7: at least has a shot of being in the MVP compensation?
- 7:32Speaker 6: Where's Ben Rice playing?
- 7:33Speaker 3: If Paul gold Schmitt is the one playing first, you.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Have three spots Ben Rice, Paul gold Schmidt, Louis Garcia Junior.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Louis Garcia Junior Paul gold Schmidt have the DH, Ben
- 7:45Speaker 4: Rice has first base, And then you could flip that
- 7:47Speaker 4: you're never really gonna play Louis Garcia Junior and Paul
- 7:50Speaker 4: Goldschmidt at the same time. Ben Rice is an everyday
- 7:53Speaker 4: player at this.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Point, And when and when Stanton comes back, When Stanton comes,
- 7:57Speaker 3: Stanton comes back, Yes, listen, October Stanton is a thing.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Let's not pretend he's not Mikey.
- 8:03Speaker 4: If we get to October, and then we're having the
- 8:05Speaker 4: conversation of who's playing where, who's playing this. Okay, that's
- 8:09Speaker 4: a luxury at that point if our problems are we
- 8:11Speaker 4: have too many good batters in the lineup. But also
- 8:15Speaker 4: we're counting on John Carlos stan and Aaron Judge to
- 8:18Speaker 4: come back. When they're saying John Carlo Stanton's taking batting
- 8:21Speaker 4: practice where he's not swinging, he's just standing in the box.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yeah, no, listen.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I applaud the Dodgers because Taylor is talking fast, he
- 8:28Speaker 2: is talking quickly, he is breathing heavily, and mikey A
- 8:31Speaker 2: is furious.
- 8:32Speaker 1: I love the Dodgers for this reason.
- 8:34Speaker 2: It has two Yankee fans who should should be kindred spirits.
- 8:37Speaker 2: It has them fighting with each other. I mean, it
- 8:40Speaker 2: does you got You guys are so concerned about what
- 8:45Speaker 2: the Dodgers are doing that you can't even applaud the
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yankees making a decent move.
- 8:50Speaker 4: And I do think it's a decent move. Luis Garcia
- 8:52Speaker 4: Junior leads the National League and slugging percentage. He has
- 8:55Speaker 4: another year of team control. This this is a move
- 8:58Speaker 4: for this season, This is a move for next seas
- 9:00Speaker 4: and we don't have the the don't put your hands
- 9:03Speaker 4: up like that. What do you put in your hands up?
- 9:05Speaker 6: Yes, that fights a team. It's a team full of
- 9:08Speaker 6: first basemen.
- 9:08Speaker 2: In DH's Mike, you gotta play the field, who's catching,
- 9:12Speaker 2: who's playing shortstop, who's playing right and left field?
- 9:16Speaker 6: With your two outfielders hurt. You went and got a
- 9:19Speaker 6: second basement first baseman when those are the only two
- 9:22Speaker 6: spots that you're not.
- 9:23Speaker 4: Moving, Mikey, they got a hitter. They got a hitter.
- 9:27Speaker 4: This Yankee team has been the worst offense since.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Last I checked Austin Wells Anthony BOPI are still gonna
- 9:35Speaker 3: now have to batten this lineup.
- 9:36Speaker 1: I never want Brian Cashman the leaf.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Luis Garcia Junior is one of the best hitters right now.
- 9:44Speaker 6: He's a great hitter.
- 9:46Speaker 5: I'm not disagreeing with you.
- 9:47Speaker 6: He doesn't fit in this lineup.
- 9:49Speaker 3: It's going to get Treek Schoobel to go behind Cam
- 9:52Speaker 3: Schlitler and Garrett Cole.
- 9:54Speaker 6: What does it do for you? The pro doesn't help.
- 9:56Speaker 4: The problem is there aren't There isn't this like surplus
- 10:00Speaker 4: of third basement available. There isn't the surplus of shortstops
- 10:03Speaker 4: available to where if Luis Garcia has to go back
- 10:05Speaker 4: and play second base, and then you have to move
- 10:07Speaker 4: Jash Chisholm to third. Yes, it's a bad defensive lineup.
- 10:11Speaker 4: The problem for this Yankee team has not been defense.
- 10:13Speaker 4: The problem for this Yankee team has been we score
- 10:16Speaker 4: two runs every game, and we need our pitching staff
- 10:19Speaker 4: to be the best pitching staff in baseball. If if
- 10:22Speaker 4: the Yankees make all these moves, if this is the
- 10:25Speaker 4: only move too, I'm done. This Yankee team is done.
- 10:28Speaker 4: This Yankee team cannot win if Luis Garcia Junior is
- 10:31Speaker 4: the move this offseason.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Team right now.
- 10:34Speaker 4: I mean, but they're fighting for their life to score
- 10:36Speaker 4: one run a game.
- 10:37Speaker 5: Where the Red Sox won't lose.
- 10:39Speaker 4: They the Red Sox are winning the World Series. I'm
- 10:42Speaker 4: starting to resign myself to.
- 10:44Speaker 1: This Baseball is them crazy? I love it.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I want to thank the two of you for still

- 12:52Speaker 2: Football coach. We normally get these sponsored pitches where you know,
- 12:55Speaker 2: people come on, they.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Pitch a product. You're not pitching a product.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Tell us about the important work you're doing with Texas
- 13:01Speaker 2: A and M Football.
- 13:03Speaker 7: Yeah, No, I think we're pitching Texas A and M
- 13:06Speaker 7: Football and everything that it's about and everything that it
- 13:08Speaker 7: stands born.
- 13:08Speaker 8: So it's always.
- 13:09Speaker 7: Great to get on with you guys and get the
- 13:11Speaker 7: opportunity to talk about the program. I know football seasons
- 13:14Speaker 7: around the corner. When I get the reach out from
- 13:17Speaker 7: your show that it's time to get on the air.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Yes, we were saying right before you came on, We're
- 13:22Speaker 2: like coach Elco's coming on football season has started.
- 13:24Speaker 8: Yes, there's no doubt, There's no doubt.
- 13:27Speaker 1: But baseball season is going on right now.
- 13:30Speaker 2: And before we get to the football, you are a
- 13:33Speaker 2: Yankee fan, and I am wondering how you experience the
- 13:36Speaker 2: Dodgers getting to reach Schooble.
- 13:39Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 13:40Speaker 7: Again, I focus, I focus on what we're doing, and
- 13:43Speaker 7: so I'm focused on what the Yankees are going to
- 13:45Speaker 7: do today, and so my reaction based on the trade
- 13:48Speaker 7: deadline is gonna have everything to do with what Cashman
- 13:50Speaker 7: pulls off today. Not that I'm in any place to
- 13:54Speaker 7: be critical of him, but you know, I'm hoping. I'm
- 13:56Speaker 7: hoping we can get a catcher in there and a big,
- 13:58Speaker 7: righty bat behind it.
- 14:00Speaker 2: So you don't think any the Dodgers are banned for baseball, No,
- 14:03Speaker 2: because you used to be the Dodgers, right, I mean
- 14:05Speaker 2: you are the Dodgers.
- 14:05Speaker 8: Still, Listen. You know it is what it is.
- 14:08Speaker 7: I think in this day and age, you know they're
- 14:11Speaker 7: going to try to figure out how to create a
- 14:12Speaker 7: cap and create some type of level playing field. But
- 14:16Speaker 7: you know, for years, the Yankees proved that you could
- 14:18Speaker 7: spend a lot of money the wrong way and not
- 14:20Speaker 7: win anything, and so I don't think it's just about spending.
- 14:23Speaker 7: I think you got to give credit to the Dodgers
- 14:25Speaker 7: for who they're spending it on and what they're doing.
- 14:27Speaker 2: We were talking, and you and I have known each
- 14:29Speaker 2: other for a while. My daughter and your and your
- 14:32Speaker 2: son michelgo jun'r very good friends. By the way, you
- 14:35Speaker 2: missed the second national championship, coach, but you know, I
- 14:38Speaker 2: know you're busy.
- 14:39Speaker 8: I did.
- 14:39Speaker 7: I caught the first one, though hard pressed for you
- 14:42Speaker 7: to find somebody else who was person at the first
- 14:47Speaker 7: championship that your daughter won in college, and so.
- 14:51Speaker 8: I'm not sure.
- 14:51Speaker 7: That was a rainy afternoon and so I sat through
- 14:54Speaker 7: the rain watching that happen, and so go find someone
- 14:57Speaker 7: else who did that.
- 14:58Speaker 1: No one else I even got out of the rain.
- 15:02Speaker 1: You couldn't handle it anymore.
- 15:03Speaker 2: But you were talking about your kids applying to college
- 15:06Speaker 2: and how football impacts what colleges they apply to in
- 15:09Speaker 2: what way, like, can you explain that to us?
- 15:12Speaker 8: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 15:12Speaker 7: And so my second son went through the application process
- 15:15Speaker 7: a couple of years ago and as he comes to
- 15:19Speaker 7: me and I'm like, hey, put a list together, and
- 15:20Speaker 7: he comes he brings this list in and it's literally
- 15:23Speaker 7: like the top ten football programs in America, and I'm like,
- 15:26Speaker 7: I'm like, why these schools And it's like, oh, I
- 15:28Speaker 7: don't know, I think they'd be cool. And you start
- 15:31Speaker 7: mentioning like other ones and if they're not in like
- 15:33Speaker 7: these national football games that you see every week, like
- 15:37Speaker 7: there's just no interest. I'm like, all right, well, he's
- 15:40Speaker 7: just a kid and he's a boy. It's now my
- 15:41Speaker 7: daughter's going through the process and I'm literally having the
- 15:44Speaker 7: same conversation with her, and I'm I'm pointing out all
- 15:47Speaker 7: of these good schools that I'm aware of that I know,
- 15:49Speaker 7: good academic schools, good communities, and but it's it is
- 15:53Speaker 7: a straight line sec acc like I got to have
- 15:57Speaker 7: great saturdays for football. And it's like, okay, so my
- 16:00Speaker 7: daughters locked in.
- 16:01Speaker 1: On this are either interested in Texas A and M.
- 16:03Speaker 7: I mean, yeah, I think they both would have a
- 16:06Speaker 7: ton of interest in Texas A and M. I think
- 16:08Speaker 7: my wife and I and our kids have kind of
- 16:10Speaker 7: decided to let them go out of here. And I
- 16:14Speaker 7: don't know that being in college as an eighteen year
- 16:17Speaker 7: old where your dad is at football coach is the
- 16:19Speaker 7: right is the right move and so we've kind of
- 16:22Speaker 7: encouraged them to go out on their own and kind
- 16:24Speaker 7: of find their own space.
- 16:26Speaker 3: But are we allowing them to go to an SEC
- 16:27Speaker 3: school or is it like you need to go to
- 16:29Speaker 3: the Big ten the Big.
- 16:30Speaker 7: Twelve my sons. So Kirby uses that against me all
- 16:34Speaker 7: the time. You know, it is what it is?
- 16:37Speaker 1: Is Texas on the list for both of them?
- 16:39Speaker 8: I mean that's off limits.
- 16:41Speaker 7: Yeah, we draw a couple there's only a handful of
- 16:44Speaker 7: lines we draw in the household relative to my job,
- 16:48Speaker 7: but yeah, that would be one that's and I think
- 16:50Speaker 7: even from their perspective, it's off limits.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Wait, so this is interesting because if they were doing
- 16:54Speaker 2: this a couple of years ago, Indiana would not be
- 16:56Speaker 2: on their list.
- 16:57Speaker 1: Is Indiana on both their lists?
- 17:00Speaker 8: Out? Okay, I don't think they've quite elevated.
- 17:03Speaker 7: I don't think it's about performance on the field as
- 17:06Speaker 7: much as it's about atmosphere. And you know what it
- 17:09Speaker 7: looks like on game day. So, with all due respect
- 17:12Speaker 7: to the Indiana program, I'm not sure that game day
- 17:15Speaker 7: has quite got into the shop of some of the
- 17:19Speaker 7: other colleges that are a little bit more passionate about football.
- 17:22Speaker 2: I've been reading a lot about what people think about
- 17:25Speaker 2: your team this season, and a lot of people feel
- 17:27Speaker 2: like this is the best roster you've ever had.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Do you agree with that?
- 17:31Speaker 8: Yeah? It should be.
- 17:32Speaker 7: I mean, I think if we're doing our job and
- 17:34Speaker 7: continuing to build and grow. You know, obviously, the biggest
- 17:37Speaker 7: challenge we have is is there's so many new faces
- 17:40Speaker 7: that haven't played at Texas A and M. You know,
- 17:42Speaker 7: and so last year this time, you know, you had
- 17:45Speaker 7: a little bit of a quiet confidence because you had
- 17:47Speaker 7: been through it with so many of these guys and
- 17:50Speaker 7: you kind of knew how they were wired come game
- 17:53Speaker 7: day and what it was all going to look like.
- 17:55Speaker 7: And you know, there's a little bit of angst only
- 17:57Speaker 7: because we have a few more guys that are gonna
- 18:00Speaker 7: play critical snaps for us that that maybe haven't done
- 18:03Speaker 7: it for us yet.
- 18:04Speaker 8: And so but we do.
- 18:06Speaker 7: We feel good about the talent we have. We feel
- 18:08Speaker 7: good about what we're doing in terms of developing in
- 18:11Speaker 7: the off season, and so it's getting that time where
- 18:14Speaker 7: you know, go put a football down and let's figure
- 18:16Speaker 7: out what we're really all about.
- 18:17Speaker 4: Coach, with that continuity, how much does it help to
- 18:20Speaker 4: have the stability of a returning quarterback in Marcel Reid
- 18:24Speaker 4: in this nil era.
- 18:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I think obviously that's a huge starting point. I
- 18:28Speaker 7: think we all know how important the quarterback position is.
- 18:31Speaker 7: Having him return from a leadership standpoint is really big.
- 18:35Speaker 7: From a consistency within our offense.
- 18:37Speaker 8: Is really big.
- 18:38Speaker 7: And then obviously the playmaker that he is and what
- 18:41Speaker 7: he's capable of doing. You know, he's a guy that
- 18:44Speaker 7: we rely on heavily, and so we're excited that he's back.
- 18:46Speaker 8: We're excited that he's back with.
- 18:48Speaker 7: Us, and you know, I think he's poised to take
- 18:50Speaker 7: a really really big step this year.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Coach, I'm sure you're sick of getting asked about it,
- 18:56Speaker 3: but I'm looking at your schedule and I'm getting exhausted
- 18:59Speaker 3: just looking at it. How do you guys, like, how
- 19:01Speaker 3: do you guys deal with having a game that you
- 19:04Speaker 3: can circle almost every week?
- 19:06Speaker 7: Yeah, and so again I've said this, this is I've
- 19:09Speaker 7: answered this question every time I do it again. This
- 19:11Speaker 7: has to get recorded so that after the year, actually
- 19:15Speaker 7: in these games, I don't have to listen to how
- 19:18Speaker 7: easy the schedule was, because I dealt with last year.
- 19:22Speaker 7: Last year, I dealt with these same questions. How are
- 19:24Speaker 7: you manage the schedule. We managed the schedule, and then
- 19:27Speaker 7: I dealt with, oh, well, what an easy schedule they had.
- 19:31Speaker 8: So no, listen, you can go around.
- 19:34Speaker 7: When we made the decision to go to nine games
- 19:37Speaker 7: in this league, I think we all knew how daunting
- 19:40Speaker 7: that was going to look. And then the idea of
- 19:43Speaker 7: having five away games in one season was going to
- 19:48Speaker 7: create some challenges. And then you know, you put it
- 19:50Speaker 7: on paper and obviously it looks a whole lot worse.
- 19:53Speaker 8: But I don't think it's unique to us.
- 19:55Speaker 7: I literally think it is just nine sec games and
- 19:59Speaker 7: we happen to be one of the groups that's got
- 20:01Speaker 7: to play five on the road this year, and I'm
- 20:03Speaker 7: not sure that you're going to find an easy way
- 20:05Speaker 7: to do that.
- 20:06Speaker 8: And so it'll be a challenge. We know that.
- 20:08Speaker 7: I think that's why you come play in this league.
- 20:11Speaker 7: And you know, again there's a lot of talking going
- 20:14Speaker 7: on on podiums, but I think when you look at
- 20:16Speaker 7: the schedule and you look at what we're playing against,
- 20:19Speaker 7: I think it speaks to why this league is what
- 20:21Speaker 7: it is and why it is the best league in
- 20:23Speaker 7: the country.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Coach, I know you guys are always evolving, always trying
- 20:27Speaker 2: to get better at your jobs, and so I'm wondering
- 20:29Speaker 2: what you learn from last season that is specifically towards
- 20:32Speaker 2: the end there against Miami, that you can carry into
- 20:34Speaker 2: this season here.
- 20:36Speaker 7: Yeah, I think anytime you get into that playoff situation.
- 20:39Speaker 7: I think it was the first time we dealt with
- 20:41Speaker 7: it as a program, the first time a lot of
- 20:42Speaker 7: our kids dealt with it, you know, And I think
- 20:46Speaker 7: how you handle those emotions, how you handle the ebbs
- 20:48Speaker 7: and flows of that game, I think you learn, and
- 20:51Speaker 7: you know, we're still an evolving program. I think that's
- 20:55Speaker 7: one of the hardest things for people to get their
- 20:57Speaker 7: head wrapped around, because it doesn't mean we don't want
- 21:00Speaker 7: to have instant success.
- 21:01Speaker 8: We do, but in a lot of ways, we haven't been.
- 21:06Speaker 7: In a lot of those games, in a lot of
- 21:08Speaker 7: those moments, and so I think we learned a lot
- 21:10Speaker 7: from what it's going to feel, what it's going to
- 21:11Speaker 7: feel like as you go through it, and you know,
- 21:13Speaker 7: we're excited for the opportunity to get back and try
- 21:15Speaker 7: to do it again.
- 21:16Speaker 2: When you hear your commissioner, when you hear you know,
- 21:20Speaker 2: Kirby Smart and others talk about the sec breaking away
- 21:22Speaker 2: from college football.
- 21:23Speaker 1: What are your thoughts on that, Like, what do you
- 21:25Speaker 1: think how.
- 21:26Speaker 8: Far away that actually is? Now?
- 21:30Speaker 7: I just listen, this system is broken. We know that
- 21:34Speaker 7: everybody's trying to find some avenue to unbreak it, right,
- 21:40Speaker 7: And I just think at this point anything has to
- 21:43Speaker 7: be on the table because you know, we can't continue
- 21:46Speaker 7: to live like this. I mean, we just we're living
- 21:48Speaker 7: it right now with this ruling. You know, we start
- 21:51Speaker 7: camp on Wednesday, right, and we just changed roster construction
- 21:55Speaker 7: rules for this season two days right, Like, this is
- 21:58Speaker 7: just it. It's utter insanity. What's happening from a global
- 22:02Speaker 7: leadership standpoint? And listen, Greg does an unbelievable job for
- 22:06Speaker 7: the SEC, but when you just talk about global leadership
- 22:09Speaker 7: or college football, it's it's it's awful and it's absolutely awful.
- 22:12Speaker 8: And so that's where we're at.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Are you talking about the fifth year that everyone now
- 22:16Speaker 1: gets a fait?
- 22:17Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 22:17Speaker 7: So we just we just announced that the twenty two
- 22:20Speaker 7: class was eligible for this season like two days ago.
- 22:24Speaker 8: Right.
- 22:26Speaker 2: It's a little rough, Yeah, well rough, because how do
- 22:29Speaker 2: you communicate, right, rough? Well, you get players back that
- 22:31Speaker 2: you probably wanted, right, But it's also tough explaining that
- 22:35Speaker 2: to the guys who came there to play football, right, well.
- 22:38Speaker 7: And what those guys have been doing, and then the
- 22:40Speaker 7: ruling comes out, but there's not actually any awareness of
- 22:43Speaker 7: how it's gonna be impactful. With rosters already capped, are
- 22:49Speaker 7: we expanding? Are we expanding? Like nobody knows because nobody
- 22:52Speaker 7: puts any detail into any of this, and so it
- 22:55Speaker 7: comes from four different areas to actually create some level
- 22:59Speaker 7: of a ruling. And yeah, I mean it'd be like
- 23:02Speaker 7: the NFL making a decision tomorrow to go to sixty
- 23:05Speaker 7: one man rosters this year.
- 23:08Speaker 8: Right.
- 23:08Speaker 7: We just don't do things like that. It just doesn't
- 23:11Speaker 7: make any sense.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Yeah, it doesn't coach.
- 23:13Speaker 4: When you talk to boosters and A and M fans,
- 23:17Speaker 4: is the first thing they bring up that they really
- 23:19Speaker 4: want to beat Texas.
- 23:22Speaker 7: Yeah, I think that's obviously something that's really important to
- 23:25Speaker 7: our program and obviously it's something that's really important to us,
- 23:28Speaker 7: and that game means a lot to so many people
- 23:31Speaker 7: here and that's not lost on us. I have mentioned
- 23:35Speaker 7: to everybody who has brought that up to me. I
- 23:37Speaker 7: do think there should be two markers to a season.
- 23:40Speaker 7: One how did we do against them? But also who
- 23:43Speaker 7: had the better year? Because I don't want to be
- 23:47Speaker 7: the program that beats them and as the worst year,
- 23:50Speaker 7: that's not something I.
- 23:51Speaker 8: Would see as a success.
- 23:53Speaker 7: And certainly, if we lose to them, but we have
- 23:55Speaker 7: the better year, it's disappointing to lose to them, but
- 23:58Speaker 7: I wouldn't see that as a complete failure either. And
- 24:00Speaker 7: so I think it's two levels that you're trying to
- 24:03Speaker 7: do it. But that game certainly means an awful lot
- 24:05Speaker 7: to people around here.
- 24:05Speaker 2: We know that, coach, because you can get into the
- 24:08Speaker 2: playoff with two losses?
- 24:09Speaker 1: Is there a bit? Is there less pressure on the
- 24:11Speaker 1: regular season than there used to be?
- 24:14Speaker 8: Yeah, other than our schedule.
- 24:16Speaker 7: So I do think and listen, I do think, and
- 24:19Speaker 7: I've said this, I think one of the reasons why
- 24:21Speaker 7: it's important that we be careful how big we make
- 24:24Speaker 7: this playoff is I think regular season games in college
- 24:28Speaker 7: football still matters so much.
- 24:29Speaker 8: I think it's why ratings at the SEC.
- 24:31Speaker 7: Have vaulted up to I think we're the third highest
- 24:34Speaker 7: rate of sport in America now, behind the NFL, and
- 24:40Speaker 7: I don't even know what the second one is, but
- 24:42Speaker 7: we're third. And I just think, like when you think
- 24:45Speaker 7: back to last year, you know, Miami and Notre Dame
- 24:48Speaker 7: played a play in game for the playoffs in week one.
- 24:52Speaker 7: Notre Dame in Texas A and m played in Week three,
- 24:54Speaker 7: and that had ultimate playoff ramifications, and so you don't
- 24:59Speaker 7: know which.
- 25:00Speaker 8: Games are gonna matter.
- 25:01Speaker 7: And so that's what makes fans so excited about all
- 25:03Speaker 7: of these big matchups that happen, happened all the way
- 25:05Speaker 7: through it. As long as we stay in this range
- 25:08Speaker 7: where that's the case, then no, I think there is
- 25:10Speaker 7: still a ton of pressure. You know, we start expanding
- 25:13Speaker 7: this thing to twenty four teams and now you're going
- 25:15Speaker 7: to get what you're talking about, which is a much
- 25:18Speaker 7: lesser emphasis on big regular season matchups because they won't
- 25:21Speaker 7: mean as much because everyone's going to get in the playoffs.
- 25:24Speaker 2: We'll get you out of here in a second. We
- 25:26Speaker 2: have circled this on our calendars. Thanksgiving weekend, we're going
- 25:29Speaker 2: to bring Chris Sims. It's Texas at Texas A and M.
- 25:32Speaker 2: We're going to bring Sims there just so the fans
- 25:34Speaker 2: can kill them.
- 25:35Speaker 1: What do you think good with that? Yes?
- 25:38Speaker 7: Yeah, well we'll make sure we get him on the
- 25:40Speaker 7: big jumbo tron and make it for he's a Jersey
- 25:45Speaker 7: guy a little bit. So I got mixed feelings on
- 25:46Speaker 7: that one.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Yes, he is a Jersey Yes, your kindred spirits the
- 25:49Speaker 1: two of you.
- 25:49Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, so it's a little bit. I got to mixed.
- 25:52Speaker 8: I got to mix the emotions on that one.
- 25:54Speaker 2: All right, we'll let the fans decide though, Okay, I
- 25:56Speaker 2: mean sure real quick. You're a Yankee fan, as we mentioned,
- 26:00Speaker 2: Are you also a Knicks fan?
- 26:02Speaker 8: No? Actually not.
- 26:03Speaker 7: I was a Nets fan, so I was Netles, I
- 26:06Speaker 7: was Nets and doubles and then uh and then Yankees
- 26:09Speaker 7: and so I'm.
- 26:10Speaker 8: So sorry I never became a Garden guy.
- 26:13Speaker 5: You're the one.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so you didn't feel good for the next winning
- 26:16Speaker 2: championship like that?
- 26:17Speaker 1: Was that meant nothing to you? Nothing? Nothing, no, no, no?
- 26:21Speaker 7: And probably, honestly, the sport that I follow the least
- 26:23Speaker 7: nowadays is the NBA. I just ask the one I
- 26:25Speaker 7: have a hard time to be behind, to be honest
- 26:28Speaker 7: with you.
- 26:29Speaker 2: All right, Well, good luck with the uh, with the
- 26:31Speaker 2: kids getting ready for college, hopefully they go to a
- 26:33Speaker 2: school that you approve of.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Remind them that Dad's paying for it.
- 26:36Speaker 7: Okay, I will, I will absolutely how'd that work out
- 26:40Speaker 7: for you, guys?
- 26:41Speaker 8: You've been through this process. We don't get much say
- 26:43Speaker 8: in this thing.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I had no say zero, say yes zero, not how
- 26:47Speaker 2: it works for us. Yeah yeah, my wife had all
- 26:49Speaker 2: the say really, the kids had all the say So.
- 26:52Speaker 2: All right, coach, good luck getting your team ready. We'll
- 26:55Speaker 2: talk to you as we get closer here uh to
- 26:57Speaker 2: the season. But we always appreciate the time and anything
- 27:00Speaker 2: you want to say again on the way out here
- 27:01Speaker 2: about Texas A and M football, what you're endorsing today.
- 27:04Speaker 7: No, obviously, listen, we're spending in a very highly high
- 27:08Speaker 7: high direction. You see what we're doing in recruiting. I
- 27:11Speaker 7: think everybody's starting to figure out what this place is
- 27:13Speaker 7: capable of, man and so come check us out this fall.
- 27:16Speaker 7: It's going to be another year will be Pat Kyle,
- 27:18Speaker 7: and it's going to be unbelievable games and an unbelievable atmosphere.
- 27:20Speaker 2: How often do you take the kids past the trophy
- 27:22Speaker 2: case to remind them there isn't one in there for that?
- 27:25Speaker 7: Like they they they're very well versed on where we
- 27:29Speaker 7: are and what we're trying to get.
- 27:30Speaker 8: That around here, we don't hold punches on that stuff.
- 27:33Speaker 2: It's so great at Northwestern now Kelly brings all their
- 27:36Speaker 2: kids to the trophy case and says, all of these
- 27:38Speaker 2: trophies are yours.
- 27:39Speaker 8: That's what Yeah.
- 27:40Speaker 7: Yeah, you want to be the one who doesn't, right,
- 27:43Speaker 7: So it goes both ways. Motivation goes in both directions.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yes, we appreciate the time, man, good luck, and we'll
- 27:49Speaker 2: talk to you again as the as the season gets closer.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Thank you, Mike.
- 27:51Speaker 7: Yeah, I appreciate you guys having me on all right,
- 27:53Speaker 7: thank you,
