- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Sarah Strickland. Two fishermen are dead after running into
- 0:04Speaker 1: trouble off the Bayvert Peninsula. The two parish near the
- 0:07Speaker 1: small community of Harbor Rown yesterday afternoon. Another person was rescued.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Area mh Linn Paddock says the loss resonates with those
- 0:17Speaker 1: right across the province. In a post of Facebook, Premier
- 0:21Speaker 1: Tony Wakem says his thoughts are with residents and family
- 0:25Speaker 1: members of the deceased, as well as the survivor. A
- 0:29Speaker 1: man has been arrested and charged in connection with a
- 0:31Speaker 1: sexual assault earlier this year in Saint John's RNC was
- 0:35Speaker 1: called on April eleventh to reports of a sexual assault
- 0:39Speaker 1: at a home downtown. On Monday, forty two year old
- 0:42Speaker 1: Daniel Morrissey was charged with sexual assault, making harassing phone
- 0:46Speaker 1: calls and preaching a court order. The accused was held
- 0:50Speaker 1: for court. Quebec Premier Christine Frischett says an agreement on
- 0:54Speaker 1: hydro development for Churchill Falls will come very soon. Canadian
- 0:59Speaker 1: premiers are meeting this week in Pei and are set
- 1:02Speaker 1: to speak with Prime Minister Mark Karney tomorrow. Premier Tony
- 1:06Speaker 1: Wakem says his negotiating team will continue to work with Quebec,
- 1:10Speaker 1: while for Ship believes the deal will come sooner rather
- 1:13Speaker 1: than later.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I will get the opportunity to meet with Premier Wakem
- 1:18Speaker 2: in order to discuss the agreement current agreement that is
- 1:21Speaker 2: being negotiated, and I'm pretty confident that we will get
- 1:24Speaker 2: to a conclusion of this agreement pretty soon.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Meanwhile, the opposition Liberals are pressing for more information from
- 1:31Speaker 1: the PCs on the status of negotiations on the development
- 1:34Speaker 1: of Churchill Falls. Opposition leader John Hogan says government is
- 1:39Speaker 1: not being transparent enough on the file, saying people from
- 1:42Speaker 1: this province shouldn't have to rely on updates from Quebec
- 1:45Speaker 1: to find out what's happening. Hogan says Wakem is quote
- 1:48Speaker 1: hiding behind closed doors on the deal. Canadian premiers seem
- 1:53Speaker 1: to be divided on their ideas about US tariffs and
- 1:57Speaker 1: Canada's response. US President Donald Trump signed numerous executive orders
- 2:02Speaker 1: earlier this week, ordering a fifty percent tariff on a
- 2:05Speaker 1: variety of goods with no exemptions under Kuzma, after saying
- 2:10Speaker 1: he has no plans to put US liquor back on shelves,
- 2:13Speaker 1: Premier Tony Wakem believes tariffs on either country are not
- 2:17Speaker 1: the answer.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Well, the challenges is tariffs don't work for anyone. They
- 2:20Speaker 3: don't work for the people in the United States, they
- 2:22Speaker 3: don't work for the people in Canada. So I think that,
- 2:24Speaker 3: as I've said before, you know, Canada and US, we
- 2:27Speaker 3: have more that brings us together than we do separate us.
- 2:30Speaker 3: So tariffs are not effective for anyone. But I think
- 2:33Speaker 3: that the Prime Minister has taken this on and he's
- 2:36Speaker 3: we're going to stick together as a country and we're
- 2:38Speaker 3: going to move forward.
- 2:39Speaker 1: Ontario Premier Doug Ford says reciprocal tariffs are needed. If
- 2:43Speaker 1: a deal can't be reached.
- 2:45Speaker 4: We need to hit him back as hard as we can.
- 2:48Speaker 4: I'm tired of the bully trying to take our lunch
- 2:51Speaker 4: money all the time. We always seem to be on
- 2:53Speaker 4: our back heels. We need to be on the offense,
- 2:56Speaker 4: not constantly on the defense. With President Trump, we need
- 3:00Speaker 4: to stand up to the bully and we need to
- 3:02Speaker 4: hit them tariff to tariff.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Canada will celebrate the opening of the new Ontario to
- 3:09Speaker 1: Michigan Bridge without the United States. Government, says it would
- 3:13Speaker 1: be inappropriate to hold a joint celebration with the US
- 3:16Speaker 1: after Donald Trump's latest tariff threats. A Canada only celebration
- 3:21Speaker 1: is expected to be held on Friday, and the bridge
- 3:23Speaker 1: is still scheduled to open next Monday. Sources with knowledge
- 3:27Speaker 1: of the events say the decision was made yesterday and
- 3:29Speaker 1: attendees were notified that afternoon. There's little movement when it
- 3:34Speaker 1: comes to gasoline, but all other fuels are a bit
- 3:37Speaker 1: more expensive. Today. Diesel increases by nearly three cents per liter.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Furness and stove oil are up by just shy of
- 3:45Speaker 1: two and a half cents. Gas is down by a
- 3:48Speaker 1: fraction of a cent with the warmer weather. Finally, here,
- 3:52Speaker 1: Saint John's Regional Fire Department is reminding residents that safety
- 3:56Speaker 1: needs to be a top priority before you strike a match.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Whire inspector Jeanine Murphy says the first thing to do
- 4:03Speaker 1: is to check your community's rules on outdoor fires, because
- 4:06Speaker 1: the regulations quld change from town to town.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Just because the fire ban is lifted as well, it
- 4:13Speaker 4: doesn't mean everybody has permission to burn. They still need
- 4:15Speaker 4: to be checking the fire hazard map.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Powerball ticket sales have begun today in the United Kingdom.
- 4:23Speaker 1: It gives players across the Atlantic a chance at winning
- 4:25Speaker 1: the same massive jackpot US players already play for with
- 4:29Speaker 1: the same minuscule odds. The expansion was first announced in
- 4:34Speaker 1: April and marks the first time a lottery outside the
- 4:37Speaker 1: US contributes to the Powerball jackpot. Tonight's draw will be
- 4:41Speaker 1: the first Powerball draw open to players in the UK.
- 4:45Speaker 1: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
