- 0:00Mrs Carol Claus: Hello everybody.
- 0:01. My dears and darlings.
- 0:02It's Mrs. Claus.
- 0:05Well, Carol, to you all, and Rudolph.
- 0:07We are here today at Family Tree Food and Stories.
- 0:10Just taking a little break or giving a little break to Nancy and Sylvia so they
- 0:15can enjoy the holidays with their family, and we can be with you to tell you about
- 0:19the taste of Christmas around the world.
- 0:23Rudolph: Yeah, well, you know, you said I was a co-host, I believe.
- 0:26so that's fine.
- 0:27But could be possibly a future, uh, main host.
- 0:31You know, you wanna see some of my fan mail?
- 0:34You take a look.
- 0:35Girly.
- 0:36Mrs Carol Claus: sweetheart, the only thing that's glowing brighter
- 0:38than your nose is your ego right now.
- 0:40So just pipe it down a little bit, really.
- 0:43Rudolph: No way Girly.
- 0:46Mrs Carol Claus: but for all of you here we are talking global Christmas foods.
- 0:49What Santa gets, what we sample on the sleigh and all the
- 0:53different and delicious traditions
- 0:55Nancy May: we adore
- 0:56Mrs Carol Claus: around the world because, you know, everybody's got to eat.
- 0:59And by the way, just so that you know, I do work hard during the year to oversee
- 1:05you, Mr. Rudolph and the other reindeers.
- 1:08Okay.
- 1:09Stop with the whining and the, alright.
- 1:13Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:14Well, we do need those elves to make the toys along the way.
- 1:17And the cookies, my Lord.
- 1:19Cookies galore.
- 1:21They just never stop.
- 1:22I would be nowhere.
- 1:24I'd be a cookie.
- 1:25Hell.
- 1:25Oh, sorry about that.
- 1:27If it weren't for snickerdoodle, my cookie crumble expert,
- 1:30thankfully.
- 1:31Rudolph: Hmm.
- 1:31I've gotten some messages from Snicker Doodle
- 1:33Mrs Carol Claus: Yeah.
- 1:34Rudolph: apparently that kitchen isn't as cool as you think it is.
- 1:38Mrs Carol Claus: Rudolph.
- 1:38I am going to put something evil in your porage time, but honestly I do
- 1:43have to give it to you because you do guide the sleigh and keep those
- 1:47rowdy reindeer somewhat under control.
- 1:49but just a few of us know just how much I'd enjoy hiding out in the
- 1:52sleigh and flying all around the world just to see an extra glimpse.
- 1:57But I kind of sneak in there every now and then.
- 2:00Rudolph: Yeah.
- 2:00Well here we are together.
- 2:02Let's have some fun.
- 2:03And just gimme some of the respect I deserve.
- 2:06Mrs Carol Claus: Oh,
- 2:06Rudolph.
- 2:08Pity party.
- 2:09Pity party.
- 2:10Oh, you think that you're such a hot, well, I won't go there.
- 2:15Rudolph: See my red hot nose,
- 2:16Mrs Carol Claus: Yeah, red is about what it is.
- 2:19Hot.
- 2:19Maybe not, but let's get on with the trip, shall we?
- 2:24Rudolph: Okay, let's do it.
- 2:25Let's do it.
- 2:26, What are you having today?
- 2:27You go first.
- 2:27Mrs Carol Claus: Well, I think we have to start with Mexico because families down
- 2:31there, they leave some pretty special treats for you and Santa called Bunelos.
- 2:37I think I'm pronouncing that right.
- 2:38If not, you know, it's.
- 2:39The North Pole pronunciation, and they are those crispy little
- 2:44gusty cinnamon sugar things.
- 2:45Have you had their, they're like long fingers, delicious
- 2:48little children's fingers.
- 2:50Now I'm sounding like a witch, but
- 2:53Rudolph: Yeah, I'm taking notes by the way.
- 2:55Mrs Carol Claus: Oh, please.
- 2:57Rudolph: Well, you know the thing about those, oh, they're good.
- 2:59Okay.
- 3:00I get it.
- 3:00But I always seem to get the crumbs and I do deserve better,
- 3:04as do my fellow reindeers.
- 3:06. We might get a union thing going on here.
- 3:08there's some shakeup that needs to be done in the North Pole
- 3:11Mrs Carol Claus: Well wait a second, Rudolph.
- 3:13, You have to keep your hips under control because you have to get up off the ground.
- 3:18And if there's too much of those things like German Lupkins and little
- 3:22honey molded gingerbreads that are so delicious, then you are not flying.
- 3:27And that's not good for the kids around the world.
- 3:30Rudolph: Well, I'll tell you what's good for me.
- 3:32Australia leaves out cold beer.
- 3:35Mrs Carol Claus: No.
- 3:36Rudolph: What a thing.
- 3:38Mrs Carol Claus: You might lose your way around the world in that case, or
- 3:41the Philippines, the Punto Bung Bong.
- 3:44There's those beautiful little rice cakes again, it is the North Pro pronunciation,
- 3:49and I'm not Spanish or filipion, but I do try because I am Mrs. Claus.
- 3:54Rudolph: Uh, yeah, right.
- 3:55We got that.
- 3:56Okay, Mrs. You know the gold cold beer?
- 3:59That's a good thing.
- 4:00'cause, Santa does share that cold beer with us, huh?
- 4:03Mrs Carol Claus: I'm gonna tell on him, I'm gonna put him in
- 4:05Santa jail if he's not careful,
- 4:08Rudolph: you better watch it, You just remember who's got hook.
- 4:11Mrs Carol Claus: Well, I have the paddle, so there it goes, the paddle to put
- 4:15the cookies in and out of the oven.
- 4:16So just be careful.
- 4:18But speaking of beer, thankfully there is a feisty mom in Peoria,
- 4:22Illinois who likes to put out wine.
- 4:24And since I'm kind of sometimes stashing in the back of the sleigh,
- 4:28I really like this Karen lady thing.
- 4:30You know, she's, she's a good girl for all times sake.
- 4:34Rudolph: Yeah.
- 4:34Well it's five o'clock somewhere, right?
- 4:36Mrs Carol Claus: Well, we gotta make sure that we are landing somewhere
- 4:38close, around five o'clock for sure, because she wins in my,
- 4:42well, in my naughty and good list.
- 4:45Rudolph: Yeah.
- 4:45How about Japan though?
- 4:47We gotta get there fast.
- 4:48'cause I like what they're serving.
- 4:49Mrs Carol Claus: Fried chicken.
- 4:51Mm. It's finger licking good, ain't it?
- 4:53For sure.
- 4:55Rudolph: Uh.
- 4:56You know, , fried chicken is a delicacy in Japan at Christmas time, and it was a huge
- 5:01marketing campaign by that Rascal, the Colonel at KFC, Kentucky Fried Chicken.
- 5:06He was pretty cool,
- 5:08Mrs Carol Claus: Well, I think he was trying to be a stand in
- 5:09for Santa because he wore a white
- 5:11suit and he did have a mustache and a goatee, not the
- 5:16full lovely beer that Santa
- 5:18has, and he somehow.
- 5:19Snuck in strawberry Christmas cakes into Japan as well.
- 5:23How dare he get into my cooking gig
- 5:26Rudolph: Yeah, well I think you ought to take this up with the
- 5:29Japanese, 'cause apparently that is a delicacy on Christmas Day.
- 5:33And it, grew out of the war, the World War ii.
- 5:35Remember that we were there, right.
- 5:37Mrs Carol Claus: Yeah.
- 5:38How can I forget?
- 5:39Yes.
- 5:40Terrible, terrible times
- 5:40Rudolph: Yeah.
- 5:40Yeah, yeah.
- 5:41But strawberry Christmas cake, it's not so simple.
- 5:44You know?
- 5:44I couldn't help, I wanted to look it up 'cause I really want some
- 5:47of this, but it's sponge cake reminds me of our angel food cake.
- 5:51with whipped cream and strawberries in.
- 5:54It came about in the wartime because Japan was defeated of course, and had
- 5:58to build themselves back up in red and white as there were flag colors.
- 6:02So cool.
- 6:03Patriotic thing going on there,
- 6:05Mrs Carol Claus: KFC finger looking good.
- 6:06I think I'm turning Japanese.
- 6:08I'm turning Japanese.
- 6:09I think there's a song in there somewhere like that.
- 6:12But , I am kind of old and crusty, so I'm not as hip, but I do try.
- 6:16I
- 6:16do try.
- 6:16Rudolph: Hey baby.
- 6:17Keep to the kitchen.
- 6:18Okay.
- 6:19Mrs Carol Claus: The cool things will happen in the barn, I
- 6:21Rudolph: Uh uh, that's right.
- 6:22That don't get too big for your britches.
- 6:24Mrs Carol Claus: No, that's Santa's job.
- 6:26He has to get big for his purchase.
- 6:28But anyway, milk and cookies.
- 6:31Uh, how did we get there?
- 6:32Those were quite a thing,
- 6:33Rudolph: yeah.
- 6:34And how did that happen?
- 6:35That's kind of interesting.
- 6:36Mrs Carol Claus: Well, , the milk and cookies happened during the
- 6:38depression and you're such a goofball because don't you remember that time
- 6:42Rudolph: Oh yeah, there was that first time we saw those cookies,
- 6:46I remember we just went crazy.
- 6:48And I think you maybe gave us a little No, we snuck and got 'em.
- 6:52I think it was Santa.
- 6:53Santa did it.
- 6:54It wasn't you.
- 6:55Mrs Carol Claus: no.
- 6:55I would've kept your hips nice and trimmed so you could get up off the
- 6:58ground and dance on the rooftops for sure.
- 7:01Today there is still a tradition, which is really wonderful and we're so
- 7:06fortunate to have all the gifts that we can get today and in, well in today's
- 7:10day and age that, if we could go back to some of those old fashioned traditions
- 7:15where once in a while cent and I can put some magic dust on those roofs and
- 7:21down the chimneys to make sure that.
- 7:23Things stay just magical the way they should.
- 7:25And when mom and dad don't put out cookies for us, And well
- 7:29occasionally we like to do our little mischievous deeds as well
- 7:34Rudolph: Yeah.
- 7:34You know, in that magic dust, it's still out there.
- 7:37We'd still use it.
- 7:38People don't even know do they?
- 7:40Mrs Carol Claus: No, they don't know.
- 7:42A little magic dust goes a long way.
- 7:43Ho, ho, ho.
- 7:45Oh, wait a second.
- 7:46That Santos line.
- 7:47Rudolph: Uhhuh Uhhuh.
- 7:49Don't you cross that line?
- 7:50Okay.
- 7:52Mrs Carol Claus: Well, before we get crossing lines or, or jumping poles
- 7:56or whatever that might be, let's just take a quick break and tell
- 8:00everybody about the special gifts that Nancy and Sylvie have created that
- 8:04are wonderful to use all year round.
- 8:07not just at the holidays, because you know what?
- 8:10Every meal has a story and every story is a feast, even if it is a cookie.
- 8:14Rudolph: Oh yes, let's go.
- 8:15Let's do it.
- 8:21. Mrs Carol Claus: So Rodolph, let's just jump right back into that sleigh
- 8:25again and talk about Scotland because well, you know, those Scots put the
- 8:30oatmeal in their little Sporran Bag.
- 8:32You know, I call it that thing that sort of covers the, the family jewels,
- 8:37Rudolph: Oh, Mrs. Claus.
- 8:39Mrs Carol Claus: Yeah, I know.
- 8:40I kind of rock at times.
- 8:43A little, a little dancing risque
- 8:46Rudolph: Mrs.
- 8:48Mrs Carol Claus: That nose does heat up a little too fast sometimes, I think.
- 8:51But in the Scottish area, we have haggis cookies, which kind kind of interesting.
- 8:57Rudolph: Well, okay, but you ate the sugar cookies as I recall, and the
- 9:02reindeers got the haggis cookies.
- 9:04Do you care to explain what those are my dear?
- 9:06Mrs Carol Claus: Well, I do not because I'll just stick to the sugar cookies, the
- 9:10Hagas cookies, they're all yours, darling.
- 9:14Rudolph: That's what I figured.
- 9:15Mrs Carol Claus: But let me tell you who's really in charge of what the
- 9:18crew eats and yes, you just heard that Rudolph got the haggis cookies not moi.
- 9:24that's French for me.
- 9:25Yes, we do get to France too, but the inquiring minds Do want to know
- 9:30really who runs the North Pole?
- 9:31So yes, as I said, please, let's be clear.
- 9:35Rudolph, you are not in charge, darling.
- 9:39Rudolph: Yes, but my dear, I do provide that moral compass.
- 9:43I know it was wrong to give us those haggis cookies.
- 9:46I know it was wrong.
- 9:47and I'm gonna tell Santa on you and.
- 9:49Mrs Carol Claus: no,
- 9:49Rudolph: Talking about the family jewels.
- 9:52Listen to you.
- 9:53and I add the possess.
- 9:55No one has a red nose like mine.
- 9:58Mrs Carol Claus: No, except for Santa.
- 10:00After he is had, some of, Nancy's husband's Santa Secret flying Sauce,
- 10:04Rudolph: Well, we'll
- 10:05talk about that later.
- 10:06Mrs Carol Claus: Yes.
- 10:07Yes.
- 10:07That recipe's in a previous show, so Oh, dears really sparkle in red noses.
- 10:13They just sometimes get to be a thing this time of year, don't they?
- 10:16Rudolph: Oh yeah.
- 10:17, Let's talk reindeer cuisine.
- 10:18my fans wanna know what do I eat when I'm on the road besides haggis cookies?
- 10:24Mrs Carol Claus: Well, you might eat a McDonald's burger along the
- 10:26way, but I think you're vegetarian.
- 10:28So, you might, sneak a pickle off of Santa's.
- 10:30Sandwich here and there, but let's see what you do eat.
- 10:35hmm.
- 10:36Let me, go around the kitchen here.
- 10:37Just gimme a second.
- 10:38, Let me ruffle up some things.
- 10:39What's going on?
- 10:40Rudolph: Yeah, I am kind of hungry by the
- 10:41Mrs Carol Claus: Okay.
- 10:42Okay.
- 10:42Just like pipe down.
- 10:43Pipe down.
- 10:43Rudolph.
- 10:44Rudolph: Just wait a second.
- 10:45Mrs Carol Claus: You are getting this year a little bit of oats.
- 10:48We talked about oats before, again, in the oatmeal show we talked about oats.
- 10:52You have a little molasses for just a little sweet treat, dried cranberries.
- 10:57Those are one of my favorites too.
- 10:59So I might sneak a few off the top of your meal and a bit of candy Ginger.
- 11:03So that is what you're getting this year.
- 11:06Rudolph: So healthy.
- 11:08Oh, let's sneak a little more beer in there.
- 11:10Okay.
- 11:10I am gonna lobby for that.
- 11:11I'm unionizing this crew if you don't feed us just a little bit better.
- 11:15I understand about the hip argument.
- 11:16Okay, I get it.
- 11:18But, you're not like petite yourself, , and you got all that
- 11:21kitchen work you have to do and you gotta kind of stay like with it, now.
- 11:25I'll tell you what Mr. Claus does for me.
- 11:27I just wanna stand up and declare that I do get my peppermint infused carrots..
- 11:32A little bit of fun, a little bit of serious food, even when you complain
- 11:37about how expensive that food is, that's so necessary to keep this thing shining,
- 11:42this nose that I have and I'm so proud of.
- 11:46It's called Prestige and Leadership.
- 11:49Yay.
- 11:50Mrs Carol Claus: Now Rudolph, don't expect your name in Lights on Broadway
- 11:53because they dim it for Christmas Eve so that all the crew can go home.
- 11:57The cast and characters.
- 11:58And by the way, I think Wicked might be thinking that your nose is
- 12:02a little too bright on Broadway but anyway, for that glow maintenance,
- 12:07yes, it is extremely expensive.
- 12:09But we had the elves to take care of too, and , there were a lot of them.
- 12:14Mostly they survive on marshmallows, cocoa, and fudge.
- 12:18But they do have one big feast a year, and that's on December 23rd
- 12:23where they have a big cocoa roast.
- 12:25Just as we're packing the toys into the sleigh the night before, you gotta
- 12:29make sure they have a little bit of fun in merriment before the takeoff.
- 12:33Kind of like rocket launch.
- 12:35I'm thinking Elon Musk, right?
- 12:37Rudolph: Yeah, you know what Elon tried to talk me into going and taking
- 12:42my reindeers and leaving y'all and heading for Mars on that spaceship
- 12:47he has, because He says there's something about we know how to fly.
- 12:50He's trying to figure it out.
- 12:52Right.
- 12:52'cause he had a couple of explosions or something like that.
- 12:55But I told him no.
- 12:57I said my loyalty is to Mr. And Mrs. Claus.
- 13:01So you owe me
- 13:03Mrs Carol Claus: Okay.
- 13:03All right.
- 13:04Maybe I will put a little extra beer in your
- 13:06mash tonight, but
- 13:09I think Elon Musk is gonna go on the naughty list as we have
- 13:13162 elves bubbling around a vat of molten chocolate and dipping.
- 13:18Anything that they can hold into their hands into it, you know, you gotta watch
- 13:22out for Clarice because she might get dipped into the chocolate next as well.
- 13:26As occasionally a bicycle wheel or two that.
- 13:28Accidentally gets mistaken for, oh, a pretzel.
- 13:32Rudolph: I will taste totally done and include me in the party next time.
- 13:35. I'm holding some threats over your head, so just, just remember.
- 13:39. I've got some, arson in my arsenal.
- 13:41I've
- 13:41Mrs Carol Claus: You've got a few, Yes, for sure.
- 13:43I'll try and keep you off the naughty list this year, Rudolph, really?
- 13:46You are, are a little mischievous at this time of year and oh, sometimes I
- 13:50have to put up with that nonsense really.
- 13:53But let's talk about some myths about the holiday times that, you and others
- 13:58might not necessarily know about, but I think, you know, a few myths as well
- 14:02Rudolph: Do we sneak food into Santa's pockets?
- 14:05Mrs Carol Claus: Well, yes, occasionally I do.
- 14:08I'll sneak a ginger snap and, oh, wait a second.
- 14:11The ginger snaps.
- 14:12We talked about that with Magdalena ginger snaps and a little blue cheese
- 14:16and maybe a little bit of port wine just to make sure they're extra good and.
- 14:20in his coat.
- 14:20He has some caramels along in his gloves and occasionally a
- 14:24surprise fudge cube in his boot.
- 14:27But that makes sure it's nice and soft.
- 14:29Rudolph: How about do you ever put any kisses in his pockets?
- 14:33Mrs Carol Claus: Oh,
- 14:34don't make me blush.
- 14:35Don't make me blush.
- 14:36Oh my God.
- 14:37Rudolph: Hey, I'd like a few of those 'cause I got a girlfriend
- 14:40going on in this, reindeer bunch.
- 14:42Okay.
- 14:43Mrs Carol Claus: Oh,
- 14:43Rudolph: Aw.
- 14:44Mrs Carol Claus: Rudolph, you're a swinger.
- 14:45Ho.
- 14:46Ho,
- 14:46Rudolph: I am,
- 14:47although they say not to date, anybody that's employed So I guess
- 14:51I gotta be careful about this,
- 14:52Mrs Carol Claus: Well, I don't wanna fire her either, so please be careful
- 14:56about your, antics on the side.
- 14:59But, you know, travel insurance, we have to worry about that too
- 15:02because occasionally a sleigh gets stuck on a roof and.
- 15:06We gotta put an extra little burning fire under your butt or out your butt.
- 15:10So maybe I should put some onions in your mash to make sure we
- 15:14get a little extra poof going there for burning those calories.
- 15:18Because , Santa does burn a lot of calories like a
- 15:20hummingbird on an espresso drip.
- 15:22Rudolph: Oh,
- 15:22Mrs Carol Claus: Really?
- 15:23Yes,
- 15:24Rudolph: clever.
- 15:25You're
- 15:25pretty clever girl.
- 15:26Yeah.
- 15:26you know that, that stuff about me crashing and burning and,
- 15:29all of that kind of stuff.
- 15:30let's just remember that I got some things on you too.
- 15:32Okay.
- 15:33We
- 15:33Mrs Carol Claus: Well, I was just saying the onions, so you can have extra
- 15:37little gas to go up when you need to.
- 15:39Rudolph: All right.
- 15:40All right.
- 15:41let me ask the next question, Ms. Claus.
- 15:43Uh.
- 15:44Rudolph trying out for the host position.
- 15:47Okay.
- 15:47Fans.
- 15:48Fans.
- 15:48Right in.
- 15:49Okay.
- 15:49I wanna hear from
- 15:50Mrs Carol Claus: Oh, please, Rudolph, speak up a little louder so we
- 15:53Rudolph: yeah.
- 15:53Oh, no, no, no.
- 15:54That's okay.
- 15:55That's okay.
- 15:56Uh, Mrs. Claus, what happens when parents eat the cookies before Santa arrives?
- 16:02What happens there?
- 16:03Mrs Carol Claus: Well, honestly, we need the parents to have the
- 16:06children, so, we don't punish them.
- 16:09But Santa does respond oh and makes sure that they know their place.
- 16:14Rudolph: oh, you're a weenie.
- 16:15. So just saying, go ahead.
- 16:16Say, what do you do?
- 16:17Mrs Carol Claus: well, here's what we do.
- 16:18We leave handfuls of glitter in the air vents where it appears throughout the
- 16:23year, just to let them know who's been there and that there's a little bit of
- 16:27extra magic in the air that they might not know about around this time of year.
- 16:31Rudolph: So that's what that is.
- 16:33When I was growing up and I was a little reindeer and one day I want
- 16:36you to tell me how you found me.
- 16:37Okay?
- 16:38But that's for another show.
- 16:39But.
- 16:39it's slow sparkling justice.
- 16:42Mrs Carol Claus: It is beautiful though.
- 16:43Now Rudolph, you have to admit, and I know you wanna be in charge, but food is my
- 16:49domain, so I have to be the one to make the suggestions of the dirty dastardly
- 16:55Rudolph: glitter deed.
- 16:56Oh, okay.
- 16:57can I at least close the show
- 17:00Mrs Carol Claus: If you must, you are a co-host today, but I am the star, but
- 17:04I'll let you go.
- 17:05So let's take it from here,
- 17:07Rudolph: I, I gotten it.
