1:14
Speaker 3: Her packers beat the biking, so she's on Jesus likely.
1:18
Speaker 4: Not to make it another show out.

1:33

1:37
Speaker 6: documentaries and primetime shows and it's been in radio and
1:40
Speaker 6: television broadcasting for over twenty five years. He graduated from
1:44
Speaker 6: Texas Tech Watch Out WU Fans in May two thousand
1:49
Speaker 6: and four and he can now be found weekday mornings
1:53
Speaker 6: on wo w K TV as the morning Meteorologist and
1:56
Speaker 6: he's done that since twenty twelve. So we are very
2:00
Speaker 6: very happy, and I'm honored to introduce Brian Newes to
2:03
Speaker 6: the podcast.
2:03
Speaker 5: Walk from Brian.
2:04
Speaker 7: It's so good to be here. I'm excited you. I
2:06
Speaker 7: feel like him in hostile territory. That's why I wore Mark.
2:11
Speaker 4: There you go.
2:13
Speaker 5: That was a good idea. Actually, Oh that let me
2:17
Speaker 5: take you some.
2:17
Speaker 7: My mom be representing the Red and Black this summer weekend.
2:20
Speaker 5: That's okay. We understand you got to represent your alma mater, right.
2:24
Speaker 4: Try you don't have to.
2:26
Speaker 7: You don't have to guess what this year twenty three
2:29
Speaker 7: million dollars your damn runner, what seven million dollars defensive?
2:37
Speaker 4: I can't argue that one, right, right, So.
2:41
Speaker 5: I'll start with the first question, Brian.
2:42
Speaker 6: So, your TV weather career began in Lubbock, Texas, and
2:47
Speaker 6: continued to Iowa, Michigan, and then finally you landed in
2:50
Speaker 6: West Virginia. What made you decide to call Almost Heaven
2:53
Speaker 6: your home.
2:54
Speaker 7: Well, I had an agent, uh, and I fired him
2:56
Speaker 7: after I got here. So that's not good, right, It's
3:01
Speaker 7: gone true that did fire him, But I know it
3:03
Speaker 7: is the classic story of anybody who doesn't know which
3:08
Speaker 7: Charleston they are talking about. And so he's he's alway,
3:12
Speaker 7: he said, he said, I think you're gonna love Charleston.
3:14
Speaker 7: You and by the way, sorry, my boys has been
3:16
Speaker 7: a little rough this week. He said, I think you're
3:18
Speaker 7: gonna love Charleston. I said, I know, I'm gonna love it.
3:21
Speaker 7: I'd already picked like my apartment where I was gonna live,
3:24
Speaker 7: the haunting yards and everything else, and I done the
3:26
Speaker 7: research on the market, and so he called me, I
3:29
Speaker 7: was gonna have a skype interview. By the way, So
3:31
Speaker 7: this was twenty.
3:34
Speaker 4: Twelve.
3:35
Speaker 7: Yeah, twenty twelve ish.
3:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, yeah, yeah, twenty twenty twelve.
3:38
Speaker 7: So he said, he said, you're gonna have a skype interview.
3:40
Speaker 7: I think you're gonna nail it. He goes, so you
3:42
Speaker 7: already pickt out your place? Says yeah, it's ride by
3:44
Speaker 7: the water. It's awesome. He said, I think you're gonna
3:47
Speaker 7: be a great match for West Virginia. And I went,
3:50
Speaker 7: huh what what.
3:53
Speaker 4: Any?
3:54
Speaker 7: He was like, yeah, hey Charleston, You're gonna love Charleston
3:56
Speaker 7: West Virginia. I said, I thought I was going to
3:59
Speaker 7: South Carolina, you know, and you already had a place.
4:05
Speaker 7: Oh yeah, I picked it out. Ray signed it literally,
4:08
Speaker 7: Race signed the line as soon as they said we
4:10
Speaker 7: want to hire you, Jack check with the apartment place.
4:14
Speaker 7: He's a beautiful, beautiful but so so I did. I
4:19
Speaker 7: came down here and in my first meal was with UH.
4:25
Speaker 7: I was over there in Huntington at the Marshall Hall
4:29
Speaker 7: thing Cafe and UH and so of all people that
4:33
Speaker 7: I see there. Mike Kurtner, who is who is the
4:37
Speaker 7: voice for the Polgress announcer for a men's basketball has
4:41
Speaker 7: been for thirty plus years right and owns the radio
4:44
Speaker 7: stations over there Atrinee's affiliate. So so I literally met
4:49
Speaker 7: him that day and he and I have been great
4:51
Speaker 7: friends ever since. Wow, So so you know I did.
4:56
Speaker 7: I immediately met by happenstance with one of the guys
5:00
Speaker 7: just most connected there in Huntington in regards to the
5:03
Speaker 7: Marshall Sports. So it was it was awesome.
5:05
Speaker 6: You you definitely can wear that am on your shirty
5:10
Speaker 6: Yeah I can't allow it.
5:11
Speaker 3: Yeah, I appreciate it.
5:17
Speaker 7: But but yeah, that was actually how it all worked out.
5:21
Speaker 7: And I did fire my Asian he had not having it,
5:25
Speaker 7: but it wasn't because he brought me to West Virginia.
5:27
Speaker 4: Okay, so what has what has been like?
5:34
Speaker 3: And not saying that there has to be a challenge,
5:36
Speaker 3: but what what do you think is the real challenge
5:39
Speaker 3: in doing that type of work? If there's people out
5:41
Speaker 3: there or a person out there who would be interested
5:44
Speaker 3: in doing that because I did it a little bit
5:47
Speaker 3: and it and it didn't really work out for me.
5:49
Speaker 3: Not I don't and maybe not by my choice but
5:52
Speaker 3: maybe by the other folks's choice. But because I haven't
5:56
Speaker 3: done it, I think it's I think it's interesting because
5:58
Speaker 3: I think I think people just think it's like just talking.
6:02
Speaker 7: Well it is. I mean, first of all, I've always
6:05
Speaker 7: said I've hired. I've hired a number of anybody who's
6:07
Speaker 7: been in radio. I'll hire in a heartbeat because they
6:11
Speaker 7: have the gift of gab. They can fill the gap.
6:14
Speaker 7: They can talk about They may not they may be
6:17
Speaker 7: an idiot, but they can they can fill that gap
6:21
Speaker 7: because and they can do it quite well. Because it's well,
6:25
Speaker 7: if you can talk around the subject, you're fine. But
6:28
Speaker 7: but I've hired more. I won't hire a person who
6:31
Speaker 7: is out of college who has a great you know, book, booksmarts,
6:37
Speaker 7: It doesn't work. They can't communicate with people. But anybody
6:40
Speaker 7: who can talk, who sit there and tell me about
6:43
Speaker 7: their grandparents or family, whatever else, and and fill time
6:46
Speaker 7: to where I'm like, you've got to shut up at
6:48
Speaker 7: this point.
6:51
Speaker 5: That's your people.
6:52
Speaker 7: Yeah, because they I need somebody. I need somebody who
6:56
Speaker 7: can make me believe that it's going to ring tomorrow
7:00
Speaker 7: and I need somebody who can who can talk and
7:04
Speaker 7: it's housing to do that. They're good, but yet I
7:07
Speaker 7: will there are still you know, there's that, But you
7:09
Speaker 7: also have to somebody's got to be able to at
7:12
Speaker 7: least talk about the weather. You had to know one,
7:13
Speaker 7: you had to know what. You gotta understand it, uh
7:16
Speaker 7: to some degree. But I said, I was. I was
7:20
Speaker 7: working in Lubwick, Texas, and I had this gal. My
7:24
Speaker 7: gentleman goes, she's going to be the next weather gale
7:27
Speaker 7: for Telemundo, and I said, so, what experience does she have?
7:34
Speaker 7: She didn't have any. I think you're gonna make her fine.
7:40
Speaker 4: Yeah.
7:40
Speaker 7: Yeah, it was not a good day when I had
7:44
Speaker 7: When I try and make her feel fill the gap.
7:49
Speaker 7: She did with a minute and a half, and boy
7:51
Speaker 7: we had three minutes of phil.
7:53
Speaker 6: But just so you know, sometimes, yeah, if you can talk,
7:57
Speaker 6: you're you're with good with you?
8:00
Speaker 5: Right?
8:00
Speaker 3: Yeah?
8:01
Speaker 7: Yeah I was.
8:01
Speaker 8: I was in cantcuon just a couple months ago and
8:05
Speaker 8: I just looked at the people to oh, well, tormentous
8:07
Speaker 8: throttos and they were like it was some Mexican folks
8:12
Speaker 8: are thrilled.
8:12
Speaker 7: I knew thunderstorms right now.
8:15
Speaker 3: Wow. Now Lisa mentioned that you're from Texas. You went
8:18
Speaker 3: to Texas Tech. WVU is playing Texas Tech.
8:21
Speaker 4: Yes.
8:22
Speaker 3: Now, one thing that people may not know about you
8:24
Speaker 3: is that you were the mascot for Texas Tech during
8:27
Speaker 3: your collegiate day. So tell us a little bit about that.
8:29
Speaker 3: Tell us a little bit about how did you become
8:31
Speaker 3: the Red Raider.
8:32
Speaker 7: Well, there's actually a lot of succession to get into
8:36
Speaker 7: being raider Red my my mother.
8:41
Speaker 4: So there are two.
8:42
Speaker 7: There are two mascots technically for Texas Tech. There's the
8:44
Speaker 7: cartoon version, which is rader Red, the one you see
8:47
Speaker 7: on the sidelines. And then there's the one that is that.
8:50
Speaker 7: You can't take this one on the road except for
8:53
Speaker 7: bowl games or national championship which we might be on.
8:55
Speaker 5: Who knows it.
9:00
Speaker 7: Hey, you gotta hey, you gotta own it when you
9:03
Speaker 7: when you pay this much. So so you have the
9:07
Speaker 7: mass rider and the mass writer rides the black Horse,
9:11
Speaker 7: and so that one, uh pretty much stays at home
9:15
Speaker 7: except for bowl games. Uh. But Rita is the cartoon mascott,
9:18
Speaker 7: so you could travel all the way all across the country.
9:21
Speaker 7: I was in line to be right to read. My
9:24
Speaker 7: mother was a cheerleading coach.
9:26
Speaker 6: Uh.
9:26
Speaker 7: You know, I I can do it standing back, you know,
9:29
Speaker 7: backflip Uh in a heartbeat.
9:32
Speaker 4: True, but.
9:36
Speaker 5: We're in a hard way about that.
9:39
Speaker 7: He is a little rough sometimes. But but I knew
9:42
Speaker 7: that I wanted to be that so bad I've been
9:45
Speaker 7: to Texas at games as a kid. You know, it's
9:47
Speaker 7: all of that. So and then, uh, when I had
9:50
Speaker 7: the opportunity because there's there's the Male Spirit Organization, which
9:55
Speaker 7: there's a number of you have the rough uh roughnecks
9:58
Speaker 7: up there to owe you, and you got the cadets
10:01
Speaker 7: and into A and M which there are a bunch
10:03
Speaker 7: of woodses. But the reason they left the Big twelve
10:08
Speaker 7: was because we were about to surpass them and wins away. Yeah,
10:13
Speaker 7: that happens. But I wanted to raight to Red so
10:17
Speaker 7: bad and uh and I got the opportunity, and it
10:20
Speaker 7: actually happened at the at the Independence Bowl. The guy
10:26
Speaker 7: who was doing the mascot right an at the time
10:29
Speaker 7: was worn out. He's a big old fella. He was
10:32
Speaker 7: worn out. And my best friend and I, who were
10:34
Speaker 7: in line, I was next in line. He goes, tureturn,
10:37
Speaker 7: you gotta take over for him, and so we I
10:39
Speaker 7: with the half we switched out.
10:41
Speaker 5: Oh wow.
10:42
Speaker 7: And then uh, I became right to Red and was
10:43
Speaker 7: right to read them for almost a year.
10:45
Speaker 4: Uh.
10:46
Speaker 7: And I did occasional appearances later on. But it's solid, dear, there.
10:50
Speaker 3: So is there is there like a competition, So let's say, like,
10:55
Speaker 3: so let's say if I'm i'm I'm I'm that this year, Yeah,
10:59
Speaker 3: and all of a sudden you show up next year
11:01
Speaker 3: and you want to try out.
11:03
Speaker 4: Is there like a tryout that you have to or
11:05
Speaker 4: do I just stay?
11:07
Speaker 7: You know, it's it's sort of whoever's rate of red
11:10
Speaker 7: time sort of picks who's going to be that because
11:12
Speaker 7: they just it's sort of a it's it's kind of it.
11:16
Speaker 7: It's like a premonition like that, that's that's gonna be
11:19
Speaker 7: the guy. He's the guy. He's got because you listen,
11:22
Speaker 7: you have a walk like right red do you have
11:24
Speaker 7: a talk? Like you don't talk, but you have a talk.
11:29
Speaker 5: Wish I wish the camera worked. I wish you could
11:33
Speaker 5: because the medio would be awesome.
11:35
Speaker 7: You are larger than live and that you have to
11:38
Speaker 7: live things much larger than life. You step high steps,
11:42
Speaker 7: you know the way you sign your name you sign.
11:46
Speaker 3: So so just to compare, to give our audience a comparison,
11:49
Speaker 3: like the Mountaineer is a big deal here, yea in
11:51
Speaker 3: the state of West Virginia. So is it comparable to that?
11:54
Speaker 3: Would you say it's the same.
11:56
Speaker 7: No one, No one knows the identity of Raider Red
12:00
Speaker 7: until Rada Red retires and so but I had a secret,
12:07
Speaker 7: well sort, I had a very complicating issue because I
12:12
Speaker 7: was the voice of Texas Tech for baseball at the time,
12:16
Speaker 7: and I was on TV doing the weekend weather at
12:20
Speaker 7: the NBC station. So so you were busy, so everybody
12:25
Speaker 7: so in the in the Texas Tech administration that ill
12:28
Speaker 7: knw who I was. But I didn't say anything on
12:31
Speaker 7: TV ever or what radio is I was working as well, But.
12:36
Speaker 5: Part of the protocol is you can't speak as a
12:38
Speaker 5: mascot anyway.
12:40
Speaker 7: But it just so happens that I would do the
12:43
Speaker 7: six o'clock news doing the weather, and I as soon
12:48
Speaker 7: as I get done with a full forecast, which about
12:50
Speaker 7: middle of the show, I would go right back into
12:52
Speaker 7: the office and then strip and put on my waist
12:56
Speaker 7: below rate of red, I walk out and and I
13:00
Speaker 7: would do I would do the new to finish the
13:02
Speaker 7: end of the show and go seventy forecasts, looks like this,
13:05
Speaker 7: gonna have some sunshine and blah blah blah blah. And
13:07
Speaker 7: then as soon as that show was over, like that,
13:09
Speaker 7: I mean literally the light goes off, I run out
13:12
Speaker 7: the door, get in my truck and go straight to
13:14
Speaker 7: the arena so that right before seven o'clock I give
13:18
Speaker 7: be read to red on the court.
13:21
Speaker 4: So believe me, it was.
13:24
Speaker 5: It was crazy, but it was fun. It sounds like
13:27
Speaker 5: it was fun.
13:28
Speaker 6: So you just you just deluded, You just deluted to
13:32
Speaker 6: the fact that you you were the former public dress
13:35
Speaker 6: announcers for their basketball and baseball teams. Right, Yes, so
13:40
Speaker 6: that requires that requires a depth of knowledge of both
13:43
Speaker 6: sports to be able to do that.
13:45
Speaker 5: Yeah, where did you.
13:46
Speaker 6: Get a lot of your foundational understanding of those different sports?
13:50
Speaker 7: My dad has been a white hat for years in football,
13:55
Speaker 7: so he has he is absolutely I've learned more from
13:59
Speaker 7: him than anything.
14:00
Speaker 4: And what's the why haf for who don't know he is?
14:03
Speaker 4: He is the.
14:04
Speaker 7: Referee, he is in charge on the on the field
14:06
Speaker 7: the entire time.
14:07
Speaker 4: He's a white level.
14:08
Speaker 7: He's one of the microphone big twelve uh competent to
14:11
Speaker 7: say whack big sky, that's hue in anything Big twelve West,
14:16
Speaker 7: which but by the old old school Big twelve West,
14:19
Speaker 7: so middle Country off to the west. And more than
14:23
Speaker 7: anything of what I learned was neutrality. I mean, you
14:27
Speaker 7: sit there, watch and and that's I have a hard
14:30
Speaker 7: time cheering at games because I see, Yeah, I'm so
14:35
Speaker 7: ingrained with seeing seeing the middle of the road. You
14:39
Speaker 7: don't get emotional with this shoe and get most of that.
14:41
Speaker 7: So so I knew all that, but I became public public.
14:46
Speaker 7: I always didn't sound like it today, but I became
14:49
Speaker 7: the public rest announcer because I knew the game, I
14:52
Speaker 7: knew the rules, and I could immediately interpreted what happened.
14:56
Speaker 7: My friends freak out when when we're watching football again
15:00
Speaker 7: because I'm like, I told him there, and I don't
15:04
Speaker 7: do it like it. I told him on it's for me.
15:08
Speaker 5: It's just there's with your announcer voice.
15:10
Speaker 3: Yeah, it's funny because like just listening to you come
15:15
Speaker 3: from a very sports background, but it's almost a little
15:18
Speaker 3: bit indirect Oftentimes we get guests, Yeah, you know, play
15:21
Speaker 3: the game, da da da, But your mom was a
15:23
Speaker 3: cheerleading coach, your father was a referee. You've done the announcing,
15:27
Speaker 3: So you come from this sort of outwardly sports inwardly.
15:34
Speaker 7: The football coach at my high school wanted me to
15:36
Speaker 7: kick because it is crazy. Want me kick because he
15:41
Speaker 7: saw me and show choir and I could do a
15:43
Speaker 7: high kick on nobody's business. It was stupid and he
15:46
Speaker 7: wanted but he wanted me to kick. I went out
15:48
Speaker 7: and kicked a couple of times, just practice stuff, and
15:51
Speaker 7: I was decent. I won't say it was good because
15:53
Speaker 7: I have nothing compared to But my mother wouldn't let
15:57
Speaker 7: me play football because she did not want me to
15:59
Speaker 7: get her blah blah blah. So I was I was
16:02
Speaker 7: beholding to whatever she was saying. But yet I could
16:05
Speaker 7: still be up in the booth call game. I get
16:08
Speaker 7: part of it, and yeah, I can interpret it so
16:09
Speaker 7: much of it. But you know, my my my uncle
16:15
Speaker 7: h state State championship wrestling coach. So I literally have
16:19
Speaker 7: just been in the sports world but have not haven't
16:23
Speaker 7: played it. So but but all that depth of knowledge
16:28
Speaker 7: of all the different sports allowed me to be radar
16:32
Speaker 7: at and be be good at radar red because hey,
16:37
Speaker 7: you're damn right.
16:38
Speaker 4: But you know, I think it makes a difference because
16:40
Speaker 4: when you understand the sports and you are you know
16:43
Speaker 4: that mascot, you understand kind of when to get the
16:45
Speaker 4: hot crowd hide, you understand, you understand the nuances of
16:48
Speaker 4: what's going on.
16:49
Speaker 7: I know I know what essentially, I know what their
16:51
Speaker 7: hype train needs to go and I know what I know,
16:52
Speaker 7: what ain't do here, know what to do there, and
16:55
Speaker 7: and and to maximize my efforts, I you know, I knew.
16:58
Speaker 7: Listen every time that you know, we get to sixteen
17:02
Speaker 7: twelve agent or sixteen twelve, yeah, eight and two or
17:06
Speaker 7: eight and four a time out on the flour and
17:09
Speaker 7: immediately guess was TV time out? Let's go yeah. I
17:12
Speaker 7: say it every time we an arena sixteen passed, okay,
17:17
Speaker 7: next next that ball, deb ball house, stopage, whatever, there's
17:20
Speaker 7: a time out on the.
17:21
Speaker 5: Floor at the super Bowl party.
17:26
Speaker 7: I hate super Bowl.
17:28
Speaker 3: I'm like Hollis because it because what's what's what's I
17:33
Speaker 3: don't know.
17:33
Speaker 4: If it's surprising, amazing or or what it is like. Two.
17:40
Speaker 3: If I were to think about doing any parts of
17:43
Speaker 3: that of the role in which you played, in the
17:46
Speaker 3: number of roles that you've played, I would think like
17:49
Speaker 3: there would it would take a lot of work understanding
17:56
Speaker 3: of what's going on. And it seems like you just
17:58
Speaker 3: kind of fell into it and and and blended it
18:02
Speaker 3: into who you are, who you were and what you
18:04
Speaker 3: could do.
18:05
Speaker 7: I literally stumbled in the best job of my life,
18:08
Speaker 7: and that was being the mascot of Texas. But Unfortunately
18:11
Speaker 7: I was not the mascot during this big run that
18:13
Speaker 7: we're about to make in the college playoff.
18:16
Speaker 5: I was just going there. I'll just going there.
18:19
Speaker 6: So so, uh, you know, you attend a lot of
18:22
Speaker 6: when you can, a lot of the Texas Tech athletic events, right,
18:25
Speaker 6: you're kind of an ambassador for them.
18:27
Speaker 7: If Texas Tech, yeah is playing in West Virginia or
18:29
Speaker 7: anywhere close, Yeah, you're there.
18:31
Speaker 5: You're there. So you do plan on going to to
18:33
Speaker 5: Morgantown Saturday.
18:34
Speaker 7: I have some great seats.
18:36
Speaker 5: I bet you.
18:38
Speaker 7: Hotel hotel that you will cry if you knew what
18:41
Speaker 7: the price.
18:41
Speaker 5: Well, oh my gosh, I need your connections.
18:45
Speaker 7: Ilish the nights.
18:46
Speaker 6: Wow wow, No, I need your connections the next time
18:49
Speaker 6: I go to Morgantown. But but anyway, so you've been
18:52
Speaker 6: all these you know, these places besides being in labback
18:54
Speaker 6: and then the places you've attended outside of that place.
18:56
Speaker 6: So how do you compare the venue in Morgantown to
18:59
Speaker 6: some of the other places you've gone to see your
19:01
Speaker 6: team play.
19:02
Speaker 7: I was in, I've done I've done the Big House,
19:05
Speaker 7: I've been Iowa. I'm gonna tell you something. You better
19:10
Speaker 7: you better have a liver and a half year Little Iowa. Wow,
19:14
Speaker 7: those Hawk guys.
19:16
Speaker 5: Doing I thought you would say, Morgan's no.
19:17
Speaker 4: No, those Hawk.
19:18
Speaker 7: Guys know how to drink.
19:20
Speaker 5: Wow, they don't drink, they drink.
19:26
Speaker 7: I can tell you this in Morgantown, Morgan, you also
19:28
Speaker 7: have to have a solid liver. But you also have
19:32
Speaker 7: to have to be monthly your back. But that that
19:34
Speaker 7: says an opponent, the opponent, you know. Yeah, whereas I listen,
19:39
Speaker 7: we're in tailgate have a boogop pass. Thankfully, I don't
19:42
Speaker 7: know where it's at, but it's.
19:43
Speaker 5: It doesn't matter. Yeah, you're good.
19:47
Speaker 7: But but now you know what I'll say it this.
19:52
Speaker 7: I was up there a few years ago, five six
19:54
Speaker 7: five six years ago, and I was on an e
19:57
Speaker 7: scooter because I've had a number of surgeries on my
20:00
Speaker 7: on my foot, part of that mask on the ball.
20:02
Speaker 7: But I was I was rolling down the hill one time.
20:07
Speaker 5: You were rolling down there.
20:09
Speaker 6: That's a great idea, Yeah, recovering for search.
20:12
Speaker 7: That was a beer in hand, and.
20:15
Speaker 5: There might be some alcohol.
20:17
Speaker 7: But bet a friend of mine, Maddie, he knows who is.
20:22
Speaker 7: He was a hammer. He was hammered three ways from Sunday.
20:25
Speaker 7: I looked at him, I was like, you.
20:26
Speaker 5: Got to get up or not.
20:27
Speaker 7: He was like e And this one woman who was inside,
20:31
Speaker 7: who was inside the bench, she looked at him and goes,
20:33
Speaker 7: if you boys can get him up here, woll had
20:35
Speaker 7: him man and and it was a herculean effort on
20:39
Speaker 7: a knees gutter. But I take that as one of
20:42
Speaker 7: my monumental moments as.
20:45
Speaker 5: A fan, one of your biggest accomplished.
20:47
Speaker 7: Yeah, and and and also and also a lover of
20:50
Speaker 7: everything West Virginia.
20:52
Speaker 5: You are because you're a fan.
20:53
Speaker 7: I've had so much fun living here. And here's the deal.
20:56
Speaker 7: I've I've lived in West Virginia this next month, it'll
21:00
Speaker 7: we fourteen years.
21:02
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, sot me.
21:03
Speaker 3: Let me ask you this, Like you grew up essentially
21:06
Speaker 3: in college sports.
21:07
Speaker 4: Yes, that was your basically growing up to now.
21:10
Speaker 7: I've traveled. Let me tell you this. I've traveled so
21:13
Speaker 7: many places in the country to watch it sports, to
21:16
Speaker 7: watch college sports. And I say watch that. My dad
21:19
Speaker 7: literally would take me and I he would have me
21:21
Speaker 7: doing a job and it was marking fowls and stuff
21:23
Speaker 7: like that. I was on the sidelines, uh for football constantly.
21:28
Speaker 7: Here's here was a skinny, little freaking kid and I'm
21:32
Speaker 7: standing next to coaches, head coaches, and I'm marking fowls constantly,
21:35
Speaker 7: and we're going up down sidelines, and you know, saying,
21:38
Speaker 7: then you don't have you know, I don't have to
21:39
Speaker 7: maintain the sidelines where the ashmarks are for you know,
21:43
Speaker 7: just going up. Yeah.
21:45
Speaker 3: So let me ask you this, how what is your
21:49
Speaker 3: point of your perspective on the change in college sports?
21:52
Speaker 3: We see, we see it now, we talk transfer and
21:55
Speaker 3: all that stuff, coaches moving, we see what's going on
21:57
Speaker 3: with lank if right now.
21:59
Speaker 4: So what's your active one? Like the state of college sports?
22:02
Speaker 7: You know, I it's twofold. First of all, Texas Tech
22:09
Speaker 7: weird and awesome with old money by gas. We love you,
22:14
Speaker 7: but I but I, but I also look back at
22:17
Speaker 7: you know when when the players were the institution and
22:20
Speaker 7: in the college. Degree was the best part about it all.
22:23
Speaker 7: By god, you got educated, you walked out. You might
22:27
Speaker 7: you might suck as a player, or you might be
22:30
Speaker 7: just good enough. You did one good thing, and by god,
22:34
Speaker 7: the coach will loves you because you did that one
22:36
Speaker 7: good thing. But you walked out of there with a degree,
22:39
Speaker 7: and you knew you could succeed in live because you
22:42
Speaker 7: had that piece of paper and and and and for me,
22:45
Speaker 7: it's kind of like, uh, Nick Saban's at the other day,
22:47
Speaker 7: he goes, you know, we need to concentrate on the player.
22:50
Speaker 7: We need to make sure that the player is taken
22:52
Speaker 7: care of. And I still believe that, and I would
22:55
Speaker 7: hope that it's kind of like lank Keffn's gonna he's
22:58
Speaker 7: gonna he's gonna take if he's going l s ye,
23:00
Speaker 7: he's taking that team with him.
23:02
Speaker 3: Yeah, he's great, But isn't that looks sort of just
23:05
Speaker 3: the fallacy of it all right, right, because the thing
23:08
Speaker 3: is not only and you're right because I didn't even
23:09
Speaker 3: think about that point. Not only will he essentially take
23:12
Speaker 3: that whole entire team, but they're in the they're about
23:16
Speaker 3: to make the playoffs currently now, and it's like, and
23:19
Speaker 3: you have all these distractions, so it's impossible to not
23:23
Speaker 3: only concentrate on what you're doing. But again, they could
23:26
Speaker 3: literally be starting over next year and and and and
23:31
Speaker 3: play for a championship this year. But that's kind of
23:33
Speaker 3: on the road now because of what's going on.
23:35
Speaker 7: And that's what's that's what's upsetting. That's where we all
23:39
Speaker 7: agree we gotta have first of all, somebody's gotta have
23:42
Speaker 7: the kahonas to step up and say we're gonna here's
23:46
Speaker 7: the guardrails. And that's that's the problem. And I say this,
23:52
Speaker 7: I can say this as a as a guy on TV,
23:55
Speaker 7: guy who's been a mascot and and has family that
23:58
Speaker 7: literally gets a for sport. We got to have some
24:02
Speaker 7: guardrails and somebody got to step up and say, here's
24:05
Speaker 7: where it starts. Here where here's where it stops. And
24:08
Speaker 7: in more than anything, we know the portal is awesome,
24:12
Speaker 7: and it's also the worst thing in the world. We've
24:15
Speaker 7: got to say, okay, here's where the transport portal opens
24:19
Speaker 7: after the National Championship and you and you've got this
24:23
Speaker 7: time period and it needs to be like the NFL
24:27
Speaker 7: where you can't talk to a player or a coach
24:30
Speaker 7: or a coach and and and there's that. And so
24:33
Speaker 7: I I in that that regard for me, and it
24:37
Speaker 7: is just from more former mascot who happens to be
24:39
Speaker 7: on TV a little bit, hey, that that's where things
24:42
Speaker 7: have to have to start and to stop. You have
24:43
Speaker 7: to have the rules, and you've got to get as
24:45
Speaker 7: close to the NFL as you possibly can, because now
24:49
Speaker 7: we don't like I said, Texas Tech has a seven
24:51
Speaker 7: million dollar defensive line. Think about that. I it's criminal,
24:57
Speaker 7: but Jacob Rodriguez should be the Heisman winner.
25:01
Speaker 5: Wow, you know, no bias there at all.
25:06
Speaker 6: So so what's your prediction for the game this Saturday.
25:09
Speaker 6: Do you think it'll be a close game with Rich
25:11
Speaker 6: Rod's team or do.
25:12
Speaker 7: You think I really think the first half is gonna
25:14
Speaker 7: be quite challenging because first of all, he's gonna be cold.
25:18
Speaker 7: They travel, Yeah, you Tech recond is not played in
25:22
Speaker 7: the cold with this team, is not played in the coal.
25:24
Speaker 7: So we're gonna have temperatures when we start game time,
25:27
Speaker 7: temperatures are gonna be in the thirties.
25:29
Speaker 5: Yeah, We're just going to get in the wind.
25:31
Speaker 7: Yeah, and so by the time the game ends, we're
25:33
Speaker 7: gonna be We're gonna make it a forty forty two,
25:35
Speaker 7: maybe forty five at best when starting thirties. Text sex
25:38
Speaker 7: is not played in that. W has not played in
25:40
Speaker 7: that either, Yeah, but but W is a little heartened
25:43
Speaker 7: to it. And listen, W has nothing to lose at all.
25:48
Speaker 4: Yeah, a damn thing, right, pay pretty good his last couple.
25:51
Speaker 7: Yeah, no, they absolutely haven't.
25:52
Speaker 5: And and uh, I put up some some upsets this year.
25:55
Speaker 7: Listen, pet mcavee, they're awesome. They're all have to worry.
26:00
Speaker 7: But I I really do think. I think, I think
26:02
Speaker 7: first half is going to be the biggest challenge. But
26:06
Speaker 7: you've seen the way the defense plays. I mean it's stupid.
26:09
Speaker 7: I mean we're always on the Ariad offense.
26:12
Speaker 4: By the way.
26:12
Speaker 7: I've gotten drunk with Michael hes just so many times.
26:14
Speaker 7: It's crazy, is getting drunk with with with the Pirate.
26:22
Speaker 4: I'm smart. He was good for college football.
26:26
Speaker 7: Transformational for college football in Yeah, him and and and Bummy.
26:30
Speaker 7: I mean you really looked at what they did. They
26:33
Speaker 7: had a huge impact on the NFL as well. But
26:36
Speaker 7: but I you know, I god, Michael, I can tell
26:39
Speaker 7: a ton of stories. But more than anything, Texas I
26:43
Speaker 7: always had the Araid offense and and now it's our defense.
26:47
Speaker 5: Defense.
26:49
Speaker 7: Yeah, it's so it's wild to think.
26:51
Speaker 5: But whatever takes you there, whatever works.
26:54
Speaker 7: I've said, I never thought a million years I'd ever
26:57
Speaker 7: be talking about national championship, and yet here for basketball
27:01
Speaker 7: we had Chris Beard.
27:02
Speaker 3: Whatever I think of the field level, that's what the transport.
27:06
Speaker 3: That's a good thing about transport. Yeah, it levels the
27:09
Speaker 3: playing field.
27:09
Speaker 4: It did.
27:11
Speaker 3: To that point, Hollis, I challenged that a little bit,
27:15
Speaker 3: just because if I take you and you're my quarterback
27:20
Speaker 3: and you leave, there's no real true guarantee because if
27:24
Speaker 3: you're my starter, then apparently clearly you are the best guy.
27:30
Speaker 3: But I think that what it does is that Alabama
27:33
Speaker 3: can't have a third string quarterback that's going to get
27:36
Speaker 3: drafted or a third string running back that's going to
27:38
Speaker 3: get drafted. Now, we got to understand Alabama had kids
27:41
Speaker 3: that were sitting for four years and wait until their
27:43
Speaker 3: senior year to play. Now that kid is going somewhere else,
27:46
Speaker 3: so the talent distribution is more level. I think that,
27:50
Speaker 3: and again I think that is true and great for
27:53
Speaker 3: the player it gives that gives that kid an opportunity
27:57
Speaker 3: to shine.
27:57
Speaker 4: That I agree with that.
27:59
Speaker 3: But the one thing though, is you as the athlete,
28:05
Speaker 3: you have to pick somewhere where you're gonna go that
28:09
Speaker 3: you're going to play if you if if I'd have
28:12
Speaker 3: picked anywhere else other than Marshall, chances are I wouldn't.
28:17
Speaker 3: I wouldn't have played if I wanted to say, oh
28:19
Speaker 3: I went to But after your first two years, when
28:23
Speaker 3: you were getting All conference and you're leading the team
28:25
Speaker 3: and tackle da da da da dada. Then you probably
28:28
Speaker 3: would have went to Ohio State, Penn State, No to
28:30
Speaker 3: Dame because they say, I have a proven commodity in Carley.
28:33
Speaker 3: He's not a high school kid. Now he can go
28:35
Speaker 3: start for us. So it's it's a little bit different now.
28:38
Speaker 3: But again I think that they're back then, and I
28:42
Speaker 3: think you're gonna agree with me, is there would have been loyalty.
28:46
Speaker 5: That's true, you know, think you would be wise.
28:51
Speaker 3: I'm just saying they were saying if all things were yes,
28:56
Speaker 3: because they're not, because you're a proven commodity. Now again,
28:59
Speaker 3: just to get on my so by the one thing
29:01
Speaker 3: I don't like again w playing Texas Texas weekend. The
29:04
Speaker 3: one thing I hate that's happening now, hate is that
29:07
Speaker 3: we're I hate we're losing the tradition of college because
29:11
Speaker 3: memories Thanksgiving was what Robbery read. So WV was playing
29:16
Speaker 3: Pitt Washington, Stay playing Washington, not that day't playing USC Texas.
29:20
Speaker 3: Tech y'all Texas A and m we hate Texas. So
29:24
Speaker 3: that's what I'm saying. So I think this week it's
29:27
Speaker 3: kind of like blah. I mean, it's some okay, games.
29:30
Speaker 3: But it's like not.
29:31
Speaker 5: The robbery games, you know what I mean. And you
29:35
Speaker 5: you can see it.
29:36
Speaker 3: You can you can watch it on television and see
29:40
Speaker 3: the pressure of what that looks like and Georgia could
29:45
Speaker 3: be because you dot to understand like this week and
29:48
Speaker 3: then the next couple of weeks, so you had robbery week,
29:51
Speaker 3: then the bowl games, you had the championship week, then
29:53
Speaker 3: bowl games, so you would have had like like two
29:56
Speaker 3: and a half good months of just very competitive, high
29:58
Speaker 3: level football with the NFL playoffs. So now we don't
30:01
Speaker 3: really necessarily have that because bowl games don't mean anything
30:04
Speaker 3: no more.
30:05
Speaker 5: I agree, you think about it.
30:07
Speaker 6: This is the the I don't know what year anniversary
30:10
Speaker 6: of when rich Rod had his team play Pitt. It
30:13
Speaker 6: was Thanksgiving weekend, remember, and they kind of gone to
30:15
Speaker 6: the National Championship and they lost.
30:17
Speaker 3: That game.
30:19
Speaker 7: Week he screwed that up. But you know, but you know,
30:23
Speaker 7: as as he said, he said, you know, if if
30:27
Speaker 7: it was today, we'd all go with him. Yeah, back
30:29
Speaker 7: then nobody could.
30:31
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's it's a good point, Marshall, Like we just
30:36
Speaker 6: Marshall went through that last year.
30:37
Speaker 7: I was like, let's go south.
30:42
Speaker 4: Wow.
30:43
Speaker 7: But then I will say I gotta say that, Marshall.
30:45
Speaker 7: It was awesome how they sun up this year.
30:48
Speaker 4: Good point, it was good point.
30:50
Speaker 6: They could be Bowl eligible and that's that's that's just
30:52
Speaker 6: a tribute. That's a tribute to coach Gibby for sure.
30:56
Speaker 6: So I know you've got to go home. And so
30:59
Speaker 6: I have a little clip that our producer Jeff's gonna play.
31:03
Speaker 5: I was just kind of going through your reels. And
31:05
Speaker 5: since we've got a.
31:06
Speaker 6: Special special day coming up on Thursday, we're going to
31:10
Speaker 6: get Brian this flashby.
31:11
Speaker 5: So please.
31:17
Speaker 2: Top stuffers.
31:18
Speaker 9: Yes, and let me tell you something.
31:20
Speaker 6: These things they are actually very very cozy.
31:25
Speaker 7: They are so cozy and comfortable. I mean, this is
31:28
Speaker 7: just it kind of like pants.
31:33
Speaker 9: Jogging pants said what you calling look at the pre
31:37
Speaker 9: print stuffing and then if you roll them down it
31:43
Speaker 9: says the stuff Thanksgiving.
31:45
Speaker 6: And with stuffing, we we have to hear about the
31:54
Speaker 6: Thanksgiving dinner pants before you walk out of the studio, please, Brian.
31:58
Speaker 7: So they was just stove top stuffing pants. I'll tell
32:06
Speaker 7: you something about that that that this is podcast correct.
32:11
Speaker 4: Us on the radio.
32:13
Speaker 5: On the radio.
32:17
Speaker 7: Yeah, so I know where my guard brails are, just like,
32:21
Speaker 7: oh boy boy, so so here's the deal. They were
32:25
Speaker 7: essentially stove top stuffing uh ten years ago.
32:28
Speaker 6: If you could just see those too, that they were
32:30
Speaker 6: per I'm not really trying to see them.
32:33
Speaker 7: You don't preg when it went up.
32:35
Speaker 4: Lady is pregnant.
32:36
Speaker 6: I'm not.
32:38
Speaker 4: Conversation. I'm not here.
32:39
Speaker 7: They have the extra the stuffing part over your stomach.
32:42
Speaker 4: I'm not even I'm not even watching. I'm not even
32:45
Speaker 4: listening to this. Just so happens.
32:47
Speaker 7: And I didn't realize that at the time. There's a
32:49
Speaker 7: stove pop toast, stove top stuffing pants accentuate some things
32:56
Speaker 7: and on TV. Oh my Jesus what I said later
33:00
Speaker 7: I went, I'm impressive.
33:07
Speaker 4: This will never make air.
33:14
Speaker 7: But oh my gosh, I was just demonstrating the Thanksgiving
33:18
Speaker 7: pants and didn't realize that the way demonstrating.
33:22
Speaker 5: Right, are they retired.
33:23
Speaker 7: Yeah, they are retired. They've been eliminated from the wardrobe.
33:27
Speaker 7: They don't exist.

35:19
Speaker 2: Now back into the conversation.
35:21
Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back. That was
35:25
Speaker 4: a very ink Yeah.
35:31
Speaker 5: I never know what to expect when Brian is.
35:34
Speaker 4: I want to say, I love it. I can't come
35:36
Speaker 4: back on and not say that. He was probably the
35:38
Speaker 4: most enthusiastic guest that we may have had.
35:42
Speaker 5: He's a total Red Raiders fan, for sure. He'll be
35:45
Speaker 5: fun in Morgantown, that's for sure.
35:47
Speaker 3: Hollis, I think you, I think you got a discussion.
35:50
Speaker 3: But We talked about shad Or Sanders last week. He
35:53
Speaker 3: got in the game last week, didn't have a great showing,
35:55
Speaker 3: but he was kind of plug and play this week.
35:58
Speaker 3: He got a full week of reps practice. This preparation.
36:01
Speaker 3: They come out Brown's defeat the Raiders twenty four to ten.
36:07
Speaker 3: Schador had a pretty decent game. He was eleven for
36:10
Speaker 3: twenty two hundred and nine yards, one touchdown, one pick,
36:15
Speaker 3: solid first go showing. This is the first Browns quarterback
36:19
Speaker 3: to win the first start in about what out of nineteen.
36:26
Speaker 4: Start something like that.
36:27
Speaker 3: I don't want to say nineteen years, but out of
36:29
Speaker 3: nineteen different brown quarterbacks starting, I believe he's the first
36:32
Speaker 3: one to win his first start. And again we'd be
36:35
Speaker 3: remissing we didn't missing the defense. The defense had about
36:38
Speaker 3: ten sacks. They were all over Geno Smith. So again,
36:42
Speaker 3: so what did we learn, if anything, about his performance
36:46
Speaker 3: and how he showed up.
36:49
Speaker 4: I don't know. If I want to go first, I
36:51
Speaker 4: want to have lit well.
36:53
Speaker 6: I mean he did, he kind of like showed some.
36:57
Speaker 6: They played the Raiders, right, didn't they play the Las
36:59
Speaker 6: Vegas Raiders?
37:00
Speaker 5: Didn't? Two?
37:01
Speaker 6: Well, that was two of their offensive coaches I think
37:04
Speaker 6: were dismissed today, wasn't it two offensive coordinators Sean Kelly, Yeah,
37:10
Speaker 6: and I forget one of his yeah, Chip Kelly, and
37:13
Speaker 6: then Bob Bicknell I think it's his name, but anyway,
37:17
Speaker 6: but that that's not the defensive side. I think I
37:21
Speaker 6: was quite surprised when I saw the stats and heard
37:24
Speaker 6: how well he did in the game. I saw a
37:27
Speaker 6: clip of of Dion in the in the box watching
37:29
Speaker 6: his son, and he was just beaming, you know, from
37:32
Speaker 6: ear to ear when he threw a touchdown pass, his
37:34
Speaker 6: first one in the you know, his NFL career.
37:37
Speaker 5: I mean, I'm happy. I'm happy for him.
37:40
Speaker 6: I'm glad that he's kind of shown the doubters that
37:43
Speaker 6: yet he does deserve this space as a starting quarterback
37:46
Speaker 6: for the Browns at this point in the season.
37:49
Speaker 5: And you know, I would be amiss if if the
37:51
Speaker 5: Browns decided.
37:53
Speaker 6: Not to start him the rest of the season, even
37:55
Speaker 6: after the quarterback comes out of protocol.
37:57
Speaker 3: I think he's they already said he's going to be
37:59
Speaker 3: the start of next yes play, all right.
38:02
Speaker 4: So.
38:05
Speaker 3: I'm i'm I'm I'm a little more skeptical of where
38:09
Speaker 3: he where he may go and how and I'm not
38:13
Speaker 3: and I'm not really like hating on him or hating
38:17
Speaker 3: on Dion because he's Dion's son.
38:21
Speaker 7: I don't know.
38:23
Speaker 3: I don't know yet if he's gonna be in that
38:27
Speaker 3: game that's gonna be the game that he's got to win.
38:32
Speaker 4: You know that that it's a it's a.
38:33
Speaker 3: Must win game right now when in this beating this team,
38:38
Speaker 3: losing to that team might not necessarily matter, but there's
38:41
Speaker 3: gonna be a point in time where there's gonna be
38:43
Speaker 3: some pressure on him and and can he can he
38:47
Speaker 3: do that?
38:47
Speaker 4: Can he handle that?
38:50
Speaker 3: I think his confidence obviously comes from his dad, So
38:54
Speaker 3: there's never gonna be a time when he's not going
38:57
Speaker 3: to think that he can be great. And because that
39:01
Speaker 3: that's gonna I think that in its own right, will
39:03
Speaker 3: carry him.
39:04
Speaker 7: I just don't know if if there's.
39:08
Speaker 4: That much at the quarterback position that.
39:10
Speaker 5: He I mean, have left on their schedule.
39:14
Speaker 3: Like I said, they play the forty nine ers next week,
39:17
Speaker 3: let's see. Yeah, that's a pretty good I mean, forty
39:20
Speaker 3: nine ers fighting for a playoff spot. I want to
39:23
Speaker 3: say they played the Titans after that, then I believe
39:28
Speaker 3: they have the.
39:30
Speaker 5: Pressure there for sure.
39:32
Speaker 3: I mean, I think I think it was pressure just
39:34
Speaker 3: you know, even starting against the Raiders. I mean, Raiders
39:36
Speaker 3: aren't very good starting, but yeah, there's pressure there, you know.
39:40
Speaker 3: Like I said, I think he still has some bad habits.
39:42
Speaker 3: He tends to hold the ball for a little bit long.
39:45
Speaker 3: He tends to backpedal instead of stepping up in the pocket,
39:49
Speaker 3: which sometimes that could be a good thing. Sometimes it's
39:51
Speaker 3: a bad thing as far as taking sacks. But I
39:54
Speaker 3: think if you look at his skill set as far
39:56
Speaker 3: as the things he does well, it's like, you know,
39:58
Speaker 3: he has elite ball placement, he has a pretty good arm.
40:01
Speaker 3: So I think, like I said, if he can clean
40:03
Speaker 3: up those little habits, which are gonna take some time
40:05
Speaker 3: to clean up, that's not and again that takes you
40:07
Speaker 3: got to play in the game and get that game
40:09
Speaker 3: film on yourself and analyze yourself. So if I think,
40:12
Speaker 3: if he can clean up those things. And again, last week,
40:15
Speaker 3: I mean, excuse me, yesterday, the running game was on point.
40:18
Speaker 3: I mean they ran the ball all over the Rats.
40:20
Speaker 3: And again, that's the thing with this Cleveland Browns team.
40:22
Speaker 3: They have an elite defensive line. I'm talking about elite elite.
40:27
Speaker 3: I'm talking about mouths guard maybe the best defensive line.
40:33
Speaker 3: We're talking all time. I mean, he's he's on track
40:36
Speaker 3: to break the record of sacks this year. So, like
40:39
Speaker 3: I said, if you could control that ball and he
40:41
Speaker 3: can make tomely throws delivered where it needs to be delivered,
40:44
Speaker 3: they can win some games, you know, closing out the season,
40:47
Speaker 3: just from the defense.
40:49
Speaker 4: Just from the defense, you just can't make mistakes.
40:51
Speaker 3: You can't throw a bunch of picks, you can't have
40:53
Speaker 3: a bunch of turnovers, and you got to move the
40:55
Speaker 3: ball even if you're getting field goals. You know, they
40:57
Speaker 3: could be like them, like the old Ravens teams, where hey,
41:00
Speaker 3: you ain't got to make a touchdown every time, just
41:01
Speaker 3: don't put the defense in turn move the ball. Even
41:06
Speaker 3: if you punt it and you flip the field, that
41:09
Speaker 3: can still serve the defense. So you just can't pitch
41:12
Speaker 3: your defense in consistent bad positions. Yeah, I don't think
41:16
Speaker 3: I don't I don't think that they. I don't know
41:19
Speaker 3: if he is aware of that part of it. Definitely aware,
41:24
Speaker 3: but I'm but okay, so he's aware of it. But
41:28
Speaker 3: on the other side of it, there's a there's a
41:30
Speaker 3: sense of greatness. You get that touch that you know
41:33
Speaker 3: he gets that taste of greatness in this last game, so.
41:38
Speaker 4: Now it just can you build on that.
41:42
Speaker 3: But but again the problem with that is is how
41:46
Speaker 3: frequently will he have to be out on the field
41:48
Speaker 3: because of the defense is not very good and he's
41:50
Speaker 3: got to keep getting back out there.
41:53
Speaker 4: The defense. Yeah, the line if the more that they're
42:00
Speaker 4: out there to have to be.
42:02
Speaker 3: On the field, yeah, definitely, I think that's gonna I
42:06
Speaker 3: think that's going to that could play a factor in it.
42:10
Speaker 3: And I think that's probably what's been happening because they
42:12
Speaker 3: are unable to move the ball. They haven't really just offensively,
42:15
Speaker 3: they've just been in thath. I think, like I said,
42:17
Speaker 3: I think.
42:17
Speaker 4: If they can just run the ball, if you can
42:20
Speaker 4: just run the ball, run the ball, play action and
42:23
Speaker 4: just give him easy throws to make, I think I
42:26
Speaker 4: got to make the world a difference.
42:27
Speaker 3: And like I said, this is one of them situations
42:30
Speaker 3: where that offense eat that clock up. Yeah, even if
42:33
Speaker 3: you're driving, you take five to six minutes and you
42:35
Speaker 3: just get three, eat it up.
42:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, you know what I'm saying, keep that defense off
42:39
Speaker 4: the field.
42:40
Speaker 6: I think two with him being you know, a fresh quarterback,
42:43
Speaker 6: you know, just now starting his career in the NFL.
42:46
Speaker 6: I think that he's got to take it one day,
42:48
Speaker 6: one game at a time, one play at a time.
42:50
Speaker 6: Ye Like, you can't, you know, look too far ahead
42:53
Speaker 6: or kind of look back on when you make a mistake.
42:55
Speaker 6: He's just got to play in the moment and not
42:57
Speaker 6: let the game get in his head one hundred percent.
42:59
Speaker 3: And to and to that to you, Hollis like, that's
43:04
Speaker 3: that's that winning a game, having some good stats, and look,
43:09
Speaker 3: I'm not even looking at that.
43:10
Speaker 4: I'm going forward because.
43:13
Speaker 3: I'm not gonna get judged on too long. You're not
43:15
Speaker 3: gonna get judged by that one game. You're gonna get
43:17
Speaker 3: judged overall in how you play throughout the season, especially
43:22
Speaker 3: if you're the guy. Yeah, And I think, like I said,
43:24
Speaker 3: if you keep in mind that you do have that
43:26
Speaker 3: good defense, like I said, and your offense has got
43:29
Speaker 3: a sort of like reverse engineer itself. Like you said,
43:32
Speaker 3: it's not always about making a big play. It's not
43:35
Speaker 3: always about taking chances. Pitch your defense in good spots.
43:38
Speaker 3: And like I said, they're gonna have a fumble, they're
43:40
Speaker 3: gonna have a sack, they're gonna have some interception. They
43:43
Speaker 3: can if you put them in a good spot. They'll
43:46
Speaker 3: pitch you in a good spot for you to see
43:48
Speaker 3: where you have that short feel. So I think if
43:50
Speaker 3: you can keep that in mind, and I think if
43:52
Speaker 3: those offensive coordinators and everything keep that in mind, I
43:54
Speaker 3: really think they can probably win some you know, some games,
43:58
Speaker 3: you know, to close out the season. Then the question
44:01
Speaker 3: becomes is that, like, if he wins this game, let's
44:04
Speaker 3: say next week, or they are they competitive, do you
44:07
Speaker 3: bring Dylan Gabriel back once he's done with concussion protocol
44:10
Speaker 3: or do you go with Sanders?
44:12
Speaker 5: I mean that that was gonna be my question as well.
44:14
Speaker 6: I mean, I think, let's hope the Browns are done
44:17
Speaker 6: browning for a while.
44:21
Speaker 5: And just kind of, you know, you some common sense
44:23
Speaker 5: in this. I think that you have to leave Shador.
44:26
Speaker 6: If continues to play like he did yesterday and he
44:29
Speaker 6: continues to take this team and win, you have to
44:32
Speaker 6: stick with him.
44:33
Speaker 5: I mean you have to. You can't go back to a.
44:36
Speaker 6: Quarterback that wasn't winning as the games, like like Schador
44:41
Speaker 6: is capable of when he plays, and if he's winning
44:44
Speaker 6: games when he comes out of that concussion protocol, you
44:47
Speaker 6: got to keep going with the horse that got you there, right.
44:50
Speaker 3: I think so, but it's going to think so, well,
44:54
Speaker 3: now you know, and and and he's he's getting he's
44:58
Speaker 3: getting some money, and he's gonna have and and he's
45:02
Speaker 3: going to probably have some incentives that's going to be
45:04
Speaker 3: starts or play time, touchdowns and all those kinds of
45:07
Speaker 3: things that adds to his contract. He ain't gonna want
45:12
Speaker 3: to sit, No, it isn't. But the but sometimes the
45:17
Speaker 3: money can dictate that. And I think what could happen
45:21
Speaker 3: is you could get into a situation where all of
45:23
Speaker 3: a sudden there is this huge clash inside of the
45:27
Speaker 3: locker room that that can bother the because there's going
45:32
Speaker 3: to be a lineman who's going to think he should
45:34
Speaker 3: be the guy as soon as he comes off of
45:36
Speaker 3: concussion protocol he should be back in star defensive player.
45:39
Speaker 3: He's already said who he thinks without saying right. So
45:43
Speaker 3: so so out of this game, you know, we had
45:47
Speaker 3: some firing. So Chip Kelly, the offensive coordinated for the Raiders,
45:50
Speaker 3: got fire.
45:50
Speaker 4: Who else.
45:51
Speaker 3: It's a bunch of I think, okay, and and and
45:54
Speaker 3: there is a bunch I don't I don't necessarily want
45:57
Speaker 3: to go through the list.
45:58
Speaker 6: At least no, no, I've got some, I mean, but
46:02
Speaker 6: you know, it's it's the most wonderful time of the year,
46:04
Speaker 6: rights when they start firing coaches in the NFL and
46:07
Speaker 6: the collegiate level.
46:08
Speaker 5: The collegiate has been more of a carousel than the NFL.
46:11
Speaker 6: You know, you've had four or five really well known schools,
46:16
Speaker 6: Brian Kelly, Chip Kelly, you got of course, James Franklin
46:20
Speaker 6: was a few weeks ago, but still that was during
46:22
Speaker 6: the current year. Billy Napier at Florida. So you know,
46:26
Speaker 6: the collegiate level has been, you know, kind of crazier.
46:29
Speaker 6: But you have had head coach Brian Dable with the Giants,
46:33
Speaker 6: he was relieved of his duties, and then Brian Callahan.
46:37
Speaker 5: With the with the Titans. So that's already started, all.
46:40
Speaker 3: Right, So had been fired for basically not winning at state.
46:45
Speaker 3: You know, the question that I'm going to post to
46:48
Speaker 3: both of you is when coaches don't win, is it
46:55
Speaker 3: always the coach's fault?
46:57
Speaker 4: Should we should we be.
46:58
Speaker 3: Thinking of firing the coach or cause again, you fire
47:02
Speaker 3: that coach, he goes somewhere else and gets another job.
47:05
Speaker 3: He may win or may not win, whatever the case
47:07
Speaker 3: may be. But it's just kind of like that carousel.
47:12
Speaker 3: But I don't like, I don't know if it's just
47:15
Speaker 3: the head coach's fault. I mean, I know, I get
47:19
Speaker 3: you take the blame, you have to take the blame,
47:22
Speaker 3: but is it I don't think in any situations like
47:25
Speaker 3: one hundred percent, one person's fault. But you may not
47:28
Speaker 3: just be in a position where that's the best fit
47:31
Speaker 3: for you, right you may not have a personality for that.
47:35
Speaker 3: And it's like a Brian Kelly at LSU. To me,
47:38
Speaker 3: I don't know why he would ever be a head
47:39
Speaker 3: coach again because he just doesn't seem to have the
47:42
Speaker 3: head coach personality. He'll win for a little bit, but
47:46
Speaker 3: that personality is going to eventually wear you down. Same
47:49
Speaker 3: thing with Chip Kelly. Those personalities sort of wear you down.
47:53
Speaker 3: So I think it's can you can you define what
47:56
Speaker 3: those personalities are or is it just something visible that
47:59
Speaker 3: you can Again, this is I don't know these gentlemen,
48:01
Speaker 3: but I'm just saying for my observation, they just seems
48:04
Speaker 3: to be callous and not necessarily people people persons.
48:10
Speaker 4: Right.
48:10
Speaker 3: They are football guys, they know football, They're they're really
48:13
Speaker 3: good at their craft, but they have trouble connecting to people.
48:17
Speaker 3: So if you can't connect to players in a way
48:19
Speaker 3: that's on a human level and figure out a way
48:22
Speaker 3: to get the best out of players, like you know,
48:24
Speaker 3: Nick Saban was a hard guy. He was a tough coach,
48:27
Speaker 3: but he seemed to relate to you on a human
48:29
Speaker 3: level and he was able to get the best football
48:32
Speaker 3: player in person out of you. So I don't think
48:34
Speaker 3: if you're able to like capture that it's difficult to
48:38
Speaker 3: move particularly and I'm and you mentioned college football, particularly
48:42
Speaker 3: in college football, because now these guys, I don't gotta
48:45
Speaker 3: stay here, I don't listen to you, and I maybe
48:48
Speaker 3: making just as much or more than you far as
48:50
Speaker 3: money is concerned, so we're almost equal. So you have
48:53
Speaker 3: you can't treat these these quote unquote kids like kids, right,
48:58
Speaker 3: And that's particularly true for the NFL. So it's like,
49:01
Speaker 3: you know, I think, just to go back to your question,
49:05
Speaker 3: while it's always your fault as the coach, but sometimes
49:08
Speaker 3: it's just maybe a personality thinks maybe it's just an
49:11
Speaker 3: environment thing, maybe that maybe that environment is not giving
49:14
Speaker 3: you what you need to be successful as a coach,
49:16
Speaker 3: right right, I think that's fair.
49:18
Speaker 6: And to add to you, those are all valid points
49:20
Speaker 6: and to and to add to that, it could just
49:22
Speaker 6: be the standards of the school. I mean, you know
49:24
Speaker 6: what's acceptable at at Alabama is is you or what's
49:29
Speaker 6: not acceptable at Alabama will be acceptable at Marshall. Right,
49:32
Speaker 6: you know that it's kind of like right now when
49:34
Speaker 6: you look at them becoming bowl eligible, that's going to
49:36
Speaker 6: be a big deal for Huntington and the fans compared
49:39
Speaker 6: to Alabama if they're left out of the college football playoffs.
49:42
Speaker 6: So I think sometimes you know, it's a case by
49:45
Speaker 6: case type of scenario, and he may go to Virginia
49:52
Speaker 6: Tech and do a fabulous job, but the standards there
49:55
Speaker 6: are going to be a little lower because of the
49:57
Speaker 6: state that the football program.
50:01
Speaker 3: To that point, are there any good college football coaching
50:05
Speaker 3: jobs now?
50:06
Speaker 4: Are?
50:07
Speaker 3: And I say that because what I'm saying is, though jobs,
50:11
Speaker 3: what are the good jobs? Because for example, like if
50:15
Speaker 3: you were at Kentucky, you were to pay football coach
50:17
Speaker 3: at Kentucky, you win seven, six to maybe nine games
50:22
Speaker 3: a year. If you were kind of in that range,
50:24
Speaker 3: you're good. We don't really have that much expectation for you.
50:27
Speaker 3: If you can kind of keep us in a bowl
50:29
Speaker 3: or keep us both eligible every year.
50:31
Speaker 4: We're good. Now you got the playoffs.
50:33
Speaker 3: So now if you're not inching towards the playoffs, gone
50:39
Speaker 3: l s U again, if you're not national champions GOL,
50:44
Speaker 3: it's not even pin right, it's not even good enough
50:47
Speaker 3: to get to the playoffs no more. So I was
50:50
Speaker 3: like outside the money, like, what are the good jobs anymore?
50:55
Speaker 3: I don't know if per level, I don't know if
51:00
Speaker 3: if the jobs necessarily are.
51:03
Speaker 4: Different because the expectations are all the same.
51:06
Speaker 3: Now, there was a time when I think that there
51:09
Speaker 3: were teams who just was going to have a winning
51:12
Speaker 3: record and they were okay with that. That's gone. We
51:16
Speaker 3: don't want that, we.
51:17
Speaker 5: Don't Is it gone?
51:18
Speaker 4: I mean I think it's gone.
51:21
Speaker 3: I don't think any coach could survive right around five
51:28
Speaker 3: and seven, five, six and six, whatever, because now you
51:31
Speaker 3: got twelve opportunities to get into the playoffs.
51:34
Speaker 4: So it's like now I'm thinking, like I want in
51:36
Speaker 4: the playoffs.
51:36
Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think I understand that that that that.
51:39
Speaker 6: Want, But I also want to look at reality, which
51:42
Speaker 6: I'm thinking about teams like in our home state, like
51:45
Speaker 6: WVU and Marshall, like that's just not a reality, Like
51:48
Speaker 6: We're not going to fire rich Rod this year because
51:50
Speaker 6: we're not in the playoff picture, right And the same
51:53
Speaker 6: with you know, Gibbie and Huntington. We're going to be
51:55
Speaker 6: happy with what he did because of what he came
51:57
Speaker 6: in to deal with.
52:00
Speaker 4: Those situations are.
52:01
Speaker 3: Because we've seen people happy, excited about don't go long
52:06
Speaker 3: term as well. But I'll even give it, I'll even
52:09
Speaker 3: I'll even say that a year. Marshall and WVU I
52:13
Speaker 3: think are in great comfort level right now. But are
52:16
Speaker 3: they because even if you look at enough Huff, Huff
52:19
Speaker 3: won a conference championship sending after a player in the NFL,
52:25
Speaker 3: and he didn't get an extension, right. So so what
52:28
Speaker 3: I'm saying is like even in school, like Marshall, we
52:31
Speaker 3: have that success like story. I'm with you, Hollis, and
52:37
Speaker 3: I was gonna I was gonna make the point that
52:40
Speaker 3: the fan base is not okay with you being okay
52:46
Speaker 3: every head.
52:47
Speaker 4: I don't think that's gone.
52:49
Speaker 3: And and if and and if you dare make a
52:51
Speaker 3: playoff and then and then next season not make it.
52:56
Speaker 4: The conversation now is about you going.
52:58
Speaker 5: The expectations just keep the more they want.
53:02
Speaker 3: Because I think even with rich Rod, I think they're
53:03
Speaker 3: gonna give him a muggin this year. We'll see next year,
53:07
Speaker 3: the year after that. Okay, And I'm telling you, in
53:08
Speaker 3: about three years, the fan base is gonna be like, okay,
53:11
Speaker 3: we need to be inching towards something.
53:12
Speaker 4: Yeah, And I'm telling they're gonna get it paid. And
53:14
Speaker 4: we got to see it, and we got to see it,
53:16
Speaker 4: and if.
53:17
Speaker 3: We don't see it, it starts that mumbling starts again.
53:21
Speaker 4: So bring me back to my question.
53:23
Speaker 3: Are there it is their good jobs outside of you
53:26
Speaker 3: just maybe making it to a level, getting a big
53:30
Speaker 3: salary and possibly getting a big payoff.
53:32
Speaker 4: I think it's I.
53:32
Speaker 3: Think the way the way that I would see a
53:38
Speaker 3: I'll say a good coach who let's say just had
53:41
Speaker 3: a winning record, who's turned a program around to at
53:45
Speaker 3: least a winning record, the moment that I get to
53:49
Speaker 3: eight nine wins, I'm looking, I'm looking before you come
53:55
Speaker 3: to me. I think that's reason why a lot of
53:57
Speaker 3: these coaches you're looking for the next job, for the
54:00
Speaker 3: next job, because and I think a lot of coaches
54:03
Speaker 3: are already in that mindset. You're not gonna there's no
54:07
Speaker 3: reason to stay and win at a lower level.
54:12
Speaker 5: Unless you have some type of connection unless.
54:14
Speaker 4: You have some kind of body, you're an.
54:15
Speaker 5: Alumni, or he's played there.
54:17
Speaker 3: I think the last thing that you want to do
54:20
Speaker 3: is go to the next level. Gives them that next level,
54:22
Speaker 3: because I mean even if you look at like Lincoln Rally, right,
54:25
Speaker 3: he's the head coach at USC, he was at Oklahoma,
54:28
Speaker 3: had hisman winners. We're doing the good USC and now
54:33
Speaker 3: they ain't even starting to be like, yeah, what's going on?
54:35
Speaker 4: Is going on? We ain't doing much over here? Like
54:37
Speaker 4: the road, it's like day you don't.
54:40
Speaker 3: An opportunity, and and and I don't even and again
54:44
Speaker 3: I don't even think. I don't think that the fan
54:47
Speaker 3: base understands that from a as soon as you start,
54:50
Speaker 3: as soon as there's a feel of yeah, we're losing
54:54
Speaker 3: belief in you. The ad, the president, all of the
54:58
Speaker 3: US are like thinking about money.
55:00
Speaker 6: I mean they want to sell season tickets, they want
55:02
Speaker 6: the fans in the stands. And if you're not winning,
55:04
Speaker 6: people aren't going because I mean that's just the way
55:06
Speaker 6: it is.
55:07
Speaker 3: Will we ever see like a Joe Paterno, a mac
55:10
Speaker 3: brown donnelan, Will we see those coaches who because you
55:14
Speaker 3: I remember even Joe Paturna. Right, he had like nine
55:16
Speaker 3: losing seasons in Penning State, like in the beginning of
55:19
Speaker 3: all that it was back in the day, different time.
55:22
Speaker 3: But will we see that coach who's going to stay
55:24
Speaker 3: at a school for ten fifty be an institution, not
55:27
Speaker 3: like a Beamer down at VIRGINIAA. No, is that are
55:32
Speaker 3: those days done?
55:33
Speaker 4: I don't think.
55:34
Speaker 5: I think they may be.
55:35
Speaker 6: I think unless unless a coach like like like we've
55:39
Speaker 6: got the situation right now in Morgantown, like he goes
55:41
Speaker 6: somewhere else and then he comes back to retire.
55:43
Speaker 5: I really feel like rich Roald will.
55:45
Speaker 6: Probably retire from wh I think so, and those kind
55:49
Speaker 6: of situations. They may stay, but it's not going to
55:52
Speaker 6: be a legacy like you're talking about years.
55:55
Speaker 5: I don't think it means. I hope I'm wrong.
55:58
Speaker 4: And I just hate that because it's like again, it's
56:00
Speaker 4: just like the tradition of what we know of college
56:03
Speaker 4: sports football, basketball, it's really gone.
56:07
Speaker 6: It is.
56:08
Speaker 4: It's done. Like we don't have the ribbery games no more.
56:11
Speaker 3: We're not going to have that coach who's just to
56:13
Speaker 3: your point, at least is like an institutionari's part of
56:16
Speaker 3: the university, you know, the the you know, the Eddie Robinson's,
56:19
Speaker 3: the like the Beamers of Paterno's and all those guys,
56:22
Speaker 3: the Kneelings.
56:23
Speaker 4: It's like those days are.
56:24
Speaker 3: Just and and and and to prove that, you know,
56:29
Speaker 3: I'm not sure exactly how long coach Brook was at Marshall,
56:32
Speaker 3: but you could have easily thought, okay, so and I
56:39
Speaker 3: think about it, just when's the last time anybody talked about,
56:44
Speaker 3: oh how great we were? When when coach brewok was
56:46
Speaker 3: there like that that conversation shouldn't be gone, But it's
56:51
Speaker 3: it's it seems gone because now we're here in this
56:54
Speaker 3: moment and who's there?
56:56
Speaker 6: Now?
56:56
Speaker 4: Should he stay or should he go?
56:58
Speaker 3: I mean we just I mean it's it's constant moving
57:01
Speaker 3: on to stay in or going?
57:03
Speaker 4: How re hirings? How are we somebody or firing?
57:07
Speaker 6: So we've had this conversation that the Marshall Thundering Herd
57:10
Speaker 6: team of the nineties under Bob Prue would not have
57:13
Speaker 6: existed today.
57:14
Speaker 5: I mean, there's no way he could have kept Pennington there.
57:17
Speaker 6: Loss there, that team would not have gelled and stuck
57:20
Speaker 6: together for the amount of time they did to win
57:21
Speaker 6: a national championship.
57:22
Speaker 5: That they would have been raided. Marshall's team would.
57:25
Speaker 3: Have been raided, and who and and why can't you
57:28
Speaker 3: see that from a from a from the outside knowing
57:33
Speaker 3: that all this, all this moving around opportunity is never
57:38
Speaker 3: going to build you a foundation of a true team.
57:42
Speaker 3: And I think, like I said, man, I think it's
57:44
Speaker 3: just it's bad for college sports in general, and this
57:48
Speaker 3: is basketball and football particularly, and I just think we
57:52
Speaker 3: have to figure out a way to, like surprise point,
57:55
Speaker 3: to get guardrails on it where we can not only
57:57
Speaker 3: police and guardrail the players, but I think the coaches
58:00
Speaker 3: need guardrails too, because you can't like I said, it's
58:05
Speaker 3: like I can't.
58:06
Speaker 4: I can't even fathom.
58:07
Speaker 3: Like Mississippi the they're the old miss is in the
58:12
Speaker 3: mix to get to the playoffs and they're talking about
58:15
Speaker 3: part poaching the coach before the season is even.
58:19
Speaker 4: Like it's like right now, like what are.
58:22
Speaker 3: You talking about? How is that not tampering? Like how
58:26
Speaker 3: what are we doing? Like it's like you're you're having
58:29
Speaker 3: a run. There's no way I would if I was
58:31
Speaker 3: the A D number either you leave now, like if
58:35
Speaker 3: you're gonna go, go go, you know what I'm saying.
58:37
Speaker 3: But on the other hand, of that.
58:38
Speaker 4: I'm I'm saying to like the bigger college sports administration, like,
58:42
Speaker 4: we have to stop it. You can't poach my coach
58:44
Speaker 4: in the middle of my season because what does that
58:46
Speaker 4: do to the kids. But they're gone gone to wherever
58:52
Speaker 4: he goes, they don't go, so he not only do
58:54
Speaker 4: I lose my coach, I lose my team too.
58:56
Speaker 5: It's gonna be a repeated what happened to Marshall?
58:59
Speaker 3: Come on, man, well, I'm sure this won't be the
59:03
Speaker 3: last time we'll have this discussion.
